- 0:00Welcome to the Yukon Football Coaches Show. We're joined by Jim Mora. I'm
- 0:04Mike Crispino. We get together every week Tuesday, six pm on the Yukon
- 0:08Sports Network to rehash what happened over the weekend and look ahead to Rice.
- 0:14It'll be in Houston for the Huskies, a late afternoon game on Saturday.
- 0:19We'll wrap up the first half of the regular season. Coach. Another tough
- 0:24loss, second last play loss of the season this past weekend on on a
- 0:30day that turned out to be decent weatherwise, actually a good football day after
- 0:34all the rain we had. Overcoming what happened there and moving forward, tell
- 0:41me about that process, because this has been a tough go here in the
- 0:44first five six weeks for the Huskies. You just gotta learn the lessons from
- 0:50the loss or the win, whichever just transpired, and you gotta ply them
- 0:54and you gotta you gotta get all your focus on the next game. I
- 0:57mean, that's uh, that's competition, that's competitive athletics. You know,
- 1:02that's not wallowing in the past, but learning from it and pressing on with
- 1:07a good attitude and great intentions. The great work work, ethic and intent
- 1:11to get better. I mean, you know, that's that's what you do.
- 1:18I mean, that's what you do in life, right, and that's
- 1:19what you do in football. And we got another game coming up the next
- 1:23Saturday. So if you spend all week worried about what just happened, then
- 1:29you're not going to make progress. If you spend your time constructively, which
- 1:33means learning from the loss, why did it happen, and making those corrections,
- 1:37valing to get better, holding yourself accountable, holding the round people around
- 1:41you accountable, then you've then you've always got a chance to get better.
- 1:45And that's that's what we're going to keep doing because that's the formula for success.
- 1:49Yeah, I agree with you completely. Yeah. One thing that football
- 1:53fans of the Huskies do, and I'm sure you know they're sitting there watching
- 1:57the game if it's on television, are in the stadium, and they're eating
- 2:00their pizza and they're you know, they're drinking their beer, et cetera.
- 2:04And it's a lot more complicated thing than just what happens on the scoreboard.
- 2:10You look at the stuff that happened in that game. I mean, Yukon's
- 2:15offense put thirty three points on the board. That was a good thing to
- 2:16see, and yet the defense didn't play it's best. So, uh,
- 2:22it's got to be frustrating for you because obviously your staff is working twenty four
- 2:25seven to get it one hundred percent right. And the offense got going in
- 2:30the right direction and take Juan Robertson played well, and yet you know a
- 2:35couple of you know, long plays that were allowed about the defense turn the
- 2:38thing around. So my question is recovery recovering for the from that for the
- 2:44defense. Let's start there, the guys that probably are sitting there going,
- 2:47god darn it, we let them down. Could have won that game.
- 2:51We should have won that game. So how do those guys recover on the
- 2:53defensive side from what they did? Well? We had four big pass plays
- 3:00against us, which is you know, we've had a couple in the last
- 3:02few games that you know, haven't been very good. We've been a good
- 3:07coverage team, we've been a team, you know, one of the better
- 3:10teams in the country last year, which doesn't mean anything at you know,
- 3:14eliminating a big play against us. So it's figuring out why those things happened.
- 3:20And there was you know, four plays and there was four specific reasons
- 3:23why they happened, and it's making sure that you correct those things, that
- 3:28they don't happen again, that we communicate better, that we understand the call
- 3:31better, that we put them in a better call. And you know what
- 3:37competitors do is competitors move from moment to moment. That's just what they do.
- 3:43Great competitors do. You know, it's no different than I said in
- 3:46your first questions. You learn from what happened, you apply it going forward,
- 3:50and you compete like mad to make sure it doesn't happen again. If
- 3:53you can't do those things, then you can't be considered a competitor. And
- 3:58these guys are competitors. We're all competitors. I'm a competitor. Our coaching
- 4:01staff competitors are. You know. It's a competitive place over here at Yukon
- 4:06And that's what competitors do. So if you can't do that, then you
- 4:12then you then you shouldn't be in this business because you're not gonna win every
- 4:15time. But you sure us how better compete every time? Yeah, no
- 4:19doubt. At fourteen points off two turnovers. Boy, that was good to
- 4:25see. In the first half. A couple interceptions and the team turned them
- 4:30into points. I mean, you've talked about it for the last few weeks.
- 4:32To turnovers, you know, can change the game. Obviously, you
- 4:36can help you win a game. Yukon hadn't been able to do it in
- 4:40the first four weeks, but two of them in that first half, and
- 4:43to me, that was, you know, one of the main reasons you
- 4:46got up seventeen nothing. Oh, you're right. You know, you and
- 4:48I have talked about it, just taking the ball away and setting us our
- 4:53offense up, and you know, we we haven't been doing a very good
- 4:56job of that, and we got a couple early. And then key thing
- 5:00is that you convert them into points and you know, not field goals but
- 5:01touchdowns, and we convert them into touchdowns and so that's a real positive we
- 5:08got to build on. Penalties are annoying to everybody. I'm sure the coaching
- 5:14staff too, but I think the outsiders looking in go well, that's undisciplined.
- 5:18I don't agree with that. I say, sometimes guys are trying to
- 5:23do too much. They're trying to make stuff happen, and then something happens,
- 5:27they go overboard, there's a late hit or something like that. Do
- 5:30you agree with that. Am I on the right track with that? Well,
- 5:33I don't know what penalties you're referring to, But some penalties are discipline
- 5:39penalties, and some penalties are just football, and some penalties are being over
- 5:44aggressive. Some penalties are from you know, the guy you're going against being
- 5:49bigger, bigger, bigger, better and faster. Some penalties are you don't
- 5:55use good techniques. So there's no one answer. There's a bunch of answers.
- 6:00If there's a specific penalty, I can put it in that category for
- 6:02you because I can usually categorize him. So but I'll tell you this is
- 6:06that you're gonna get penalties in football game if you're playing hard. The ones
- 6:12that kill you are the ones when you get in the red zone, you
- 6:15know, or you know, you get a big play and then it comes
- 6:18back. You know. There weren't any penalties in a game Saturday that necessarily
- 6:25affected the game. They were just football penalties. Well, the Huskies have
- 6:31Rice coming up. We're gonna talk about them, and we're gonna talk about
- 6:35the play of Jilani Stafford, who again shows that he can play offense as
- 6:40well as defense. And take Juan Roberson too. Had a nice day,
- 6:44so we'll talk about all that with Jim Mora others. The Yukon Football Coaches
