- 0:01Speaker 1: Hey, Game Changers, hooking us up with this next conversation.
- 0:04Speaker 1: It is our good friend Tim kirk Chin joining us
- 0:07Speaker 1: right now. You can check out his show, Great Game
- 0:08Speaker 1: or what we'll talk more about it. Tim, it's great to.
- 0:11Speaker 2: Have you on.
- 0:11Speaker 1: First off, how you doing. How you lik in the
- 0:13Speaker 1: first month and change of the season.
- 0:16Speaker 3: Well, as always, it's been wildly unpredictable. The most beautiful
- 0:20Speaker 3: game in the world is the most unpredictable game in
- 0:23Speaker 3: the world. I said last year, I have never seen
- 0:26Speaker 3: a season that unpredictable, where a team lost six in
- 0:30Speaker 3: a row and we thought they stink, and then they
- 0:32Speaker 3: would win eight.
- 0:33Speaker 1: In a row.
- 0:34Speaker 3: Just look what has happened already this year with the
- 0:37Speaker 3: Mets and the Red Sox and the Phillies. If that
- 0:40Speaker 3: doesn't point out how great this game is. That good
- 0:44Speaker 3: players suddenly aren't very good, and then all of a
- 0:47Speaker 3: sudden something changes for no reason, and then suddenly they
- 0:51Speaker 3: take off. No great NBA jump shooter shoots fifteen percent
- 0:56Speaker 3: from the three point line for three months and then
- 0:59Speaker 3: shoots four five percent for the rest of the season.
- 1:02Speaker 3: It never works that way, but it does in baseball.
- 1:05Speaker 3: And that's why we are not allowed to figure out
- 1:08Speaker 3: what's going on on a daily basis. The game is
- 1:11Speaker 3: too good to be predicted.
- 1:15Speaker 1: What do you think about those teams so far? I mean,
- 1:18Speaker 1: they've been the talk since the payroll is high. Two
- 1:21Speaker 1: of them have already made manager changes. You know. How
- 1:24Speaker 1: surprised are you that two of those teams have already
- 1:27Speaker 1: moved on from their managers.
- 1:29Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm surprised. The Phillies on the day Rob Thompson
- 1:33Speaker 3: got fired were twenty eighth in run score and twenty
- 1:37Speaker 3: eighth in era. The day got fired, they were hitting
- 1:40Speaker 3: two nineteen as a team, one seventy nine against left
- 1:44Speaker 3: handed pitching. I didn't see any of that coming, and
- 1:47Speaker 3: I thought this would be a good rotation and it
- 1:50Speaker 3: has been a bad rotation. Now I think it's going
- 1:53Speaker 3: to turn around. And not because Rob Thompson is gone.
- 1:57Speaker 3: He is not to be blamed.
- 1:59Speaker 1: For all of this.
- 2:00Speaker 3: But I just think this team is too good to
- 2:03Speaker 3: wallow like this. I don't think they're going to catch
- 2:05Speaker 3: the Braves, but I just can't count the Phillies out
- 2:09Speaker 3: of the playoff race at the end of April. And
- 2:12Speaker 3: same with the Red Sox. They have played horribly the
- 2:15Speaker 3: day Alex Cora was fired. They were tied for the
- 2:20Speaker 3: fewest home runs in the major leagues, they had the
- 2:23Speaker 3: fewest stolen bases, and they're really good starting pitching hadn't
- 2:27Speaker 3: been really good. And then they're the Mets, of course,
- 2:30Speaker 3: who they've been the lowest scoring team in the major
- 2:35Speaker 3: leagues so far. They went in one stretch twenty innings
- 2:38Speaker 3: without scoring a run, they went one for twenty four
- 2:41Speaker 3: with runners in scoring position, and the last I looked,
- 2:43Speaker 3: they had twenty homers all year. So none of this
- 2:48Speaker 3: makes any sense. But I really think the Red Sox
- 2:51Speaker 3: and the Phillies at least have a chance to get
- 2:54Speaker 3: back into things. I'm not so sure about the Mets
- 2:58Speaker 3: the way that they're playing right now.
- 3:00Speaker 2: Tim, But what about the highest payrolls are ruining the
- 3:03Speaker 2: sport and we got to have a lockout to fix it.
- 3:04Speaker 2: But if you look up and some of those other
- 3:07Speaker 2: teams are doing good, I don't it doesn't make sense.
- 3:09Speaker 2: I thought, if you highest payroll, you automatically are the
- 3:13Speaker 2: best team, and then the other teams can't compete. And
- 3:15Speaker 2: then you look around and the Cardinals are way up
- 3:17Speaker 2: there and the Pirates are way up there.
- 3:20Speaker 1: Make it make sense, right?
- 3:22Speaker 3: But aj, I can't. Nobody can make sense out of
- 3:25Speaker 3: this game. We couldn't make any sense out of it
- 3:28Speaker 3: last year, and same thing this year. But if we have,
- 3:31Speaker 3: if we lock people out and don't play part of
- 3:34Speaker 3: next year or all of next year just because of
- 3:37Speaker 3: the payroll disparity, Look, if you know what you're doing,
- 3:40Speaker 3: like the Rays do and seemingly like the Pirates do
- 3:45Speaker 3: this year, you can win in today's game. The Tigers
- 3:48Speaker 3: a few years ago prove that. Several teams have proven
- 3:52Speaker 3: that you just have to run your team better. And
- 3:54Speaker 3: as much as we can plain that the Dodgers have
- 3:56Speaker 3: just bought a championship two years in a row, their
- 4:00Speaker 3: organization is beautifully run. I don't care what anyone says.
- 4:03Speaker 3: They do things on the inside, draft develop make players better,
- 4:08Speaker 3: better than most teams. So I think I think it's
- 4:11Speaker 3: an excuse that is kind of running out of time.
- 4:14Speaker 3: Do we need to get closer between the halves and
- 4:16Speaker 3: have notts? Of course, But when really high paid teams
- 4:21Speaker 3: like this are struggling this badly, it does tell you
- 4:25Speaker 3: that you know things. Crazy things happen, inexplicable things happen.
- 4:30Speaker 2: All the time. Tim tinking of inexplicable things talking about it.
- 4:34Speaker 2: Drew Romo hit his first two homers last night for
- 4:37Speaker 2: the White Sox. Go White Sox, by the way, against
- 4:40Speaker 2: the Angels. One left handed is first one, and then
- 4:43Speaker 2: he hit one right handed. Pretty awesome that he did
- 4:48Speaker 2: this right for his first two homer. Is this the
- 4:49Speaker 2: first time it's happened in major league history?
- 4:52Speaker 3: No? Yes, Moni Grandal did this, by the way, in
- 4:55Speaker 3: twenty twelve, which I was another White Sox. Yet yes,
- 5:00Speaker 3: so switch hitting catcher, he hits his first two major
- 5:04Speaker 3: league homers and he goes left handed and right handed
- 5:06Speaker 3: in the same game. That is so unusual. So I thought,
- 5:10Speaker 3: Drew Romo, I bet this has been forty years since
- 5:13Speaker 3: anybody did this. Instead, it's only been fourteen years. And
- 5:17Speaker 3: then I looked up a bunch of switch hitters today
- 5:19Speaker 3: who never hit home runs from both sides of the
- 5:22Speaker 3: plate in the same game, like Ken Singleton, who we
- 5:26Speaker 3: all know is a vastly underrated player, Orioles mostly in
- 5:29Speaker 3: the seventies, really really good player never did this, And
- 5:34Speaker 3: so what Drew Romo did was most unusual. But I thought,
- 5:39Speaker 3: I thought it would have been a way longer time
- 5:41Speaker 3: since anyone hit his first two homers in the same game,
- 5:45Speaker 3: and one left handed one right handed.
- 5:49Speaker 4: We love our Dogabella, who's really just a couch cushion
- 5:51Speaker 4: in our house.
- 5:53Speaker 1: And you do anything for her. A quick message from
- 5:55Speaker 1: today's sponsor, the ASPCA Pet Health Insurance Program. If you've

- 6:44Speaker 1: The ASPCA is not an insurance and is not engaged
- 6:47Speaker 1: in the business of insurance.
- 6:50Speaker 4: All right, is it more unusual than what Spencer Torkelsen
- 6:53Speaker 4: did hitting five straight after not hitting.
- 6:55Speaker 3: Any Yeah, so he went twenty three straight games and
- 6:59Speaker 3: he's a power hitter. The first twenty three games no
- 7:02Speaker 3: home runs, then he hit five homers in five He
- 7:06Speaker 3: hit homer in five straight games. So the last player
- 7:09Speaker 3: to forget at the beginning of the season have a
- 7:13Speaker 3: twenty game or more homerless streak and then homer in
- 7:18Speaker 3: five consecutive games was Greg Nettles in nineteen eighty four.
- 7:22Speaker 3: That was forty two years ago. So again makes absolutely
- 7:26Speaker 3: no sense. What is wrong with Spencer Torkelsen and then
- 7:30Speaker 3: he heats up and hits five homers in five games.
- 7:33Speaker 3: Just the craziness of baseball, and it's why I love
- 7:37Speaker 3: it so much. I just slapped my forehead every single
- 7:40Speaker 3: morning looking at the box scorer is drinking a die
- 7:43Speaker 3: of mountain dew and wondering how in the world can
- 7:46Speaker 3: this happen. It happens every day.
- 7:49Speaker 4: Tim, You and I have ginormous foreheads, so we gotta
- 7:52Speaker 4: be careful when we slap our foreheads.
- 7:54Speaker 3: But mine's a five head now and I don't shave
- 7:58Speaker 3: my head like you do, so I need to aren't
- 8:00Speaker 3: wearing my hat backwards like you guys. But you know,
- 8:03Speaker 3: I'm sixty nine years old and I don't think I've
- 8:06Speaker 3: ever worn a hat backwards in my life. I think
- 8:08Speaker 3: you got to be pretty cool to do that, and
- 8:11Speaker 3: I am not very cool. I'm so square, I'm divisible
- 8:15Speaker 3: by four. So I think you guys can get away
- 8:18Speaker 3: with it because you played in the big leagues. I'm
- 8:20Speaker 3: just a tired, little old man.
- 8:22Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 8:23Speaker 4: Well, that's one of the only reasons that I caught
- 8:26Speaker 4: was because I heard the catchers were allowed to wear
- 8:28Speaker 4: their hats backwards and it wasn't disrespectful, opposite to what
- 8:32Speaker 4: Twitter says that we look like idiots or we look
- 8:35Speaker 4: like Fred Durst when we wear a hat backwards. But
- 8:38Speaker 4: my question is still in the homers, what are you
- 8:41Speaker 4: seeing from Munataki Murakama Murakami?
- 8:45Speaker 3: Right, So he hit a homer in five straight games,
- 8:49Speaker 3: and I hope you guys know this. The last White
- 8:52Speaker 3: Sox to do that was a.
- 8:54Speaker 1: You know it?
- 8:54Speaker 2: Tim? Yeah, hasn't done that? Who hasn't done that? Tim?
- 8:59Speaker 2: On the White Sox him. I mean, let's get serious.
- 9:02Speaker 3: Hey, that's pretty cool. Five games in a row and
- 9:06Speaker 3: the time.
- 9:08Speaker 2: Really, that's so.
- 9:12Speaker 3: I love that. So Colson Montgomery had a four game
- 9:15Speaker 3: streak there, So he had a homer in four straight games.
- 9:19Speaker 3: Why you're a commedy had a homer in five straight games.
- 9:22Speaker 3: And that's the first time in major league history that
- 9:25Speaker 3: two teammates had a five and a four game home
- 9:28Speaker 3: run streak like that going at the same time. How
- 9:31Speaker 3: bizarre is that? Again, baseball at its finest.
- 9:35Speaker 2: By the way, Tim, I had my thumbs down because
- 9:37Speaker 2: he only made it to four. He didn't get to five.
- 9:39Speaker 2: So I mean, Colson's Colston's doing all right? But yeah,
- 9:42Speaker 2: I was. I was giving you a thumbs down because
- 9:44Speaker 2: he didn't make it to five.
- 9:45Speaker 1: Also, he's got time, he's young.
- 9:46Speaker 2: I know. I'm just saying a lot of people haven't
- 9:49Speaker 2: done five in a row.
- 9:51Speaker 1: Tim, were you surprised when you saw the number that
- 9:54Speaker 1: he got in the offseason? I mean, I feel like
- 9:56Speaker 1: the people who predict contracts per publication do a really
- 10:00Speaker 1: good job. There's so much more math and comparables to use.
- 10:03Speaker 1: It's a little tougher sometimes when you get a player
- 10:05Speaker 1: from overseas, But I don't remember seeing that much of
- 10:09Speaker 1: a discrepancy in a long period of time where people
- 10:11Speaker 1: thought he's going to get one hundred plus million dollars,
- 10:14Speaker 1: and so then he comes over here and you think,
- 10:15Speaker 1: I don't want to say he's going to be a bust,
- 10:17Speaker 1: but you're just like, oh, I mean most of the
- 10:18Speaker 1: league just doesn't think very highly of him. And then
- 10:20Speaker 1: you're like, wait, actually he's a slugger and he's got
- 10:24Speaker 1: good play discipline, so this will play.
- 10:27Speaker 3: Yeah. I was a little confused by the whole thing too, Scott,
- 10:30Speaker 3: And I don't know. I just did the All Japanese
- 10:34Speaker 3: team the other day in Major League history, the best
- 10:37Speaker 3: player from Japan at each position, okay, each rows in
- 10:40Speaker 3: the outfield show hey, obviously, and mir Kami was the
- 10:44Speaker 3: first baseman because I couldn't find another first baseman who
- 10:48Speaker 3: had come from Japan played the position, you know, exclusively
- 10:53Speaker 3: and really produced. So maybe the fact that there hadn't
- 10:56Speaker 3: been any or too many first base he's been to
- 11:00Speaker 3: comfort Japan made the contract situation a little confusing. But
- 11:05Speaker 3: he's got really good power. I don't think there's any
- 11:07Speaker 3: way around that. I mean, he and judged last I look,
- 11:10Speaker 3: we're tied for the American League League in homers with twelve.
- 11:14Speaker 1: Yeah, Hey, what about big picture, any trends that you've noticed, abs, homers, strikeouts,
- 11:22Speaker 1: anything else that you think has really stood out in
- 11:24Speaker 1: the first month and change.
- 11:26Speaker 3: Yeah, Well, the strikeout rate is what it is, and
- 11:29Speaker 3: it's been this way, frankly for forty years. I have
- 11:34Speaker 3: tracked this back to the mid eighties, but the last
- 11:36Speaker 3: ten to fifteen years, every year we set a new
- 11:40Speaker 3: mark for strikeouts in a season because the pitching is
- 11:45Speaker 3: so unbelievably good. I say all the time, I don't
- 11:48Speaker 3: know how anybody gets a hit anymore watching the stuff
- 11:52Speaker 3: that we see. But at some point we're going to
- 11:55Speaker 3: have to make an adjustment here from our hitters, because
- 11:58Speaker 3: on the same day on four different guys in the
- 12:02Speaker 3: major leagues O'Neil Cruz, James Wood, Kyle Schwarber, and Gunner
- 12:06Speaker 3: Henderson all got to forty strikeouts for the season on
- 12:11Speaker 3: the same day. Now, I only use forty as a
- 12:14Speaker 3: benchmark because I know different time everything else. Joe Demaggio
- 12:19Speaker 3: never struck out forty times in a season, and four
- 12:22Speaker 3: guys got there with almost a week to go. In April,
- 12:27Speaker 3: Tony Gwinn's all time career high for strikeouts in a
- 12:30Speaker 3: season is forty Now again, different hitter, different time. It's
- 12:34Speaker 3: almost apples and oranges. But when four guys have forty
- 12:38Speaker 3: strikeouts on April the twenty fifth, it just shows you
- 12:43Speaker 3: what the game has become today. And I still love
- 12:45Speaker 3: every second of it. I repeat, I don't know anyone
- 12:48Speaker 3: gets a hit anymore, but at some point, when you're
- 12:51Speaker 3: punching out at such a high rate, you're going to
- 12:54Speaker 3: have to make an adjustment and see if you can
- 12:56Speaker 3: put it in play a little bit better.
- 12:59Speaker 2: Tim Two things. First of all, strikeouts don't matter. You
- 13:01Speaker 2: get paid off power, So as long as strikeouts don't matter,
- 13:04Speaker 2: you're gonna see strikeouts keep going up. And then, second
- 13:06Speaker 2: of all, what do you think about these all these
- 13:09Speaker 2: old guys that are going on, all these old bitter guys.
- 13:11Speaker 2: Oh they're so old and bitter. They keep going on
- 13:13Speaker 2: Twitter and saying, oh, Velocity's not right nowadays it's up.
- 13:17Speaker 2: So I just want your feelings on both those things.
- 13:19Speaker 3: All right, Well, first off, the industry has done exactly
- 13:23Speaker 3: what you said, AJ. It has told the players we
- 13:26Speaker 3: don't care if you hit a soft single to left field.
- 13:28Speaker 3: We want you to hit it in the right field seats.
- 13:31Speaker 3: That's what we want from you. And they don't care
- 13:33Speaker 3: about the strikeout rate. So I don't even blame the
- 13:36Speaker 3: players for this. If you're gonna blame anyone, and I'm
- 13:39Speaker 3: not sure there's blame to go around, just blame the industry.
- 13:42Speaker 3: This is what they are paying for. As for older
- 13:46Speaker 3: players saying, now help me here, aj, are you saying
- 13:49Speaker 3: the older players are saying the velocity readings are incorrect,
- 13:53Speaker 3: They threw this hard when we used to play.
- 13:56Speaker 2: Is that what you're saying, Yes, yes, that's Greg Zahon's
- 13:59Speaker 2: been There's been a whole flew of them. Huh.
- 14:02Speaker 1: Yeah, it's on Tim Salmon said it on our Halo Tech.
- 14:04Speaker 2: Yeah, there's been a whole bunch of guys saying and
- 14:06Speaker 2: why has nobody done this? This is this is just
- 14:08Speaker 2: me asking. I've seen this also on social media. Why
- 14:11Speaker 2: can't someone take a ray gun, a stalker gun, a
- 14:14Speaker 2: jugs gun, a track man, a yakertech a da dah
- 14:17Speaker 2: da da da line them all up and have a
- 14:19Speaker 2: guy throw and see what the velocity is. That's it
- 14:21Speaker 2: seems like a simple science experiment. My kids were still
- 14:24Speaker 2: in middle school, I'd maybe be my science project.
- 14:26Speaker 3: Yeah, I look I'm not going to argue with Tim
- 14:29Speaker 3: Salmon about anything, because he's one of the best, one
- 14:33Speaker 3: of the best hitters I've ever seen, and I haven't
- 14:35Speaker 3: seen ninety five in a long in a really long time.
- 14:40Speaker 3: I think they throw harder today than they've ever thrown.
- 14:43Speaker 3: But this thought that nobody threw hard when Aeric Kratz
- 14:48Speaker 3: started his career or when AJ was in his prime,
- 14:51Speaker 3: that's ridiculous. There have been hard throwers for a long time.
- 14:55Speaker 3: And I am really dating myself since I went to
- 14:58Speaker 3: Walter Johnson High School in Bethesda, Maryland. Shirley Povich, hall
- 15:03Speaker 3: of Fame baseball writer, told me twenty five years ago.
- 15:07Speaker 3: He said, I've seen them all. I saw Walter Johnson
- 15:10Speaker 3: in his prime. I saw Bob Feller, I saw Nolan Ryan,
- 15:14Speaker 3: and I'm telling you, Walter Johnson threw harder than anyone.
- 15:18Speaker 3: And that was one hundred and twenty years ago. Now
- 15:21Speaker 3: I don't believe that for a second. But this thought
- 15:24Speaker 3: that we were throwing eighty miles an hour in nineteen
- 15:28Speaker 3: forty is just not true. But are is the velocity
- 15:32Speaker 3: in two thousand the same as it is in twenty
- 15:35Speaker 3: twenty six. No, today's guys throw harder. I don't think
- 15:39Speaker 3: there's any doubt about that.
- 15:41Speaker 4: I promise there was no rotation like the Brewers' rotation
- 15:45Speaker 4: back in the day when I first came into the
- 15:47Speaker 4: big leagues. All those dudes threw slow. I mean even
- 15:50Speaker 4: Givanni Guyardo, his pitch was the change up. And then
- 15:54Speaker 4: the Astros rotation was terrible. They threw slow like. There
- 15:57Speaker 4: was plenty of dudes that when the team weren't good,
- 16:00Speaker 4: it was okay to throw eighty seven to ninety one.
- 16:04Speaker 4: But there were still dudes that were popping a hunch.
- 16:06Speaker 4: But my question to you is about the Central. The
- 16:10Speaker 4: National League Central, every team is over five hundred. The
- 16:13Speaker 4: American League Central, every team is either at five hundred
- 16:16Speaker 4: or below. Which one do you think has the best
- 16:20Speaker 4: chance of happening throughout the entire season. The AL Central
- 16:25Speaker 4: staying all below five hundred and then obviously only one
- 16:28Speaker 4: team making it, or the NL Central all staying above
- 16:31Speaker 4: five hundred.
- 16:33Speaker 3: Well, somebody in the AL Central is going to finish
- 16:36Speaker 3: above five hundred. The Tigers are much better than they've played,
- 16:39Speaker 3: and the Guardians have won me over. Just when I
- 16:41Speaker 3: look at them and wonder, how do they ever score enough?
- 16:44Speaker 3: Runs to win a division and stay in first place.
- 16:47Speaker 3: A couple of those teams will be over five hundred
- 16:50Speaker 3: before it's over, but only I think, only two of them.
- 16:54Speaker 3: As for the NL Central, that division is better than
- 16:57Speaker 3: I thought. I mean, the Reds are real good right now,
- 17:01Speaker 3: the Cubs can really score runs, the Brewers are always good.
- 17:06Speaker 3: I did not see the Cardinals doing this well after
- 17:09Speaker 3: twenty nine games, and the Pirates have lost three in
- 17:12Speaker 3: a row, so I'm not sure where that's going. But
- 17:14Speaker 3: three of those teams, the Reds, Cubs, and Brewers made
- 17:17Speaker 3: the playoffs last year, and I wouldn't be surprised if
- 17:21Speaker 3: all three of them made the playoffs again this year.
- 17:23Speaker 3: That's a better division than people think, especially this year.
- 17:27Speaker 2: Wait, in the a Essentral, the White Sox are going
- 17:29Speaker 2: to finish over five hundred and the Tigers are those
- 17:31Speaker 2: your two teams? Ten?
- 17:33Speaker 3: No, no, no, The Guardians and the Tigers are going.
- 17:36Speaker 3: If I said the White Sox, sorry, the Guardians and
- 17:39Speaker 3: the Tigers will finish over five hundred in the AL.
- 17:42Speaker 2: Central, White sod say the White Sox. I was just
- 17:48Speaker 2: trying to correct you. I was trying to correct you.
- 17:51Speaker 3: All right, I think I should wear my hat on
- 17:53Speaker 3: backwards because I didn't understand the question right. The point
- 17:56Speaker 3: is there are not every team in the Al Central
- 18:01Speaker 3: is going to finish under five hundred. Of them are
- 18:03Speaker 3: going to finish above. That's the point I am attempting
- 18:07Speaker 3: to make very poorly here.
- 18:09Speaker 2: No, you made it perfectly. I was just correcting you
- 18:11Speaker 2: because you said the Guardians and the Tigers, and I said, oh,
- 18:15Speaker 2: so the Tigers and the White Sox. I was correcting
- 18:17Speaker 2: you from your original statement.
- 18:19Speaker 3: So you think the White Sox are going to finish
- 18:21Speaker 3: over five hundred.
- 18:22Speaker 2: He doesn't believe it.
- 18:25Speaker 1: He doesn't even want to say it himself.
- 18:27Speaker 2: He's not right, That's what I was le I was
- 18:28Speaker 2: letting tempt to that forman.
- 18:30Speaker 1: I know the entire time we've had the show, Tim,
- 18:32Speaker 1: this is what season four, the White Sox have been good.
- 18:35Speaker 1: So AJ's just waiting for his time to erupt and
- 18:37Speaker 1: be like they're decent.
- 18:38Speaker 2: Year are decent.
- 18:39Speaker 1: They're decent.
- 18:39Speaker 2: Anyways, Tim, by the way, did you steal my phone
- 18:42Speaker 2: for your guest list? Because you have Joe Buck and
- 18:45Speaker 2: Max Shur's are on recently on your show, So have
- 18:48Speaker 2: you been going through my phone and picking out all
- 18:50Speaker 2: my friends to have on your show. And I mean
- 18:52Speaker 2: I haven't been invited yet.
- 18:54Speaker 3: I don't think I have your phone number, AJ, So
- 18:57Speaker 3: why don't you just tell it to me right now?
- 19:01Speaker 3: Eight six nine, Tim, we had Joe buck on a
- 19:08Speaker 3: couple days ago. We had Max schures Are on. Both
- 19:11Speaker 3: of them were great And no, I am not stealing
- 19:13Speaker 3: guests from you and AJ. We would love to have
- 19:16Speaker 3: you on at any point. You two Eric Krats. I've
- 19:20Speaker 3: told Eric Krats we're gonna have him come to my
- 19:22Speaker 3: son's studio in his basement in skip Back or Collegeville, Pennsylvania.
- 19:28Speaker 3: How about that, Eric Kratz comes to our house and
- 19:31Speaker 3: does a podcast in person. We're still gonna do that.
- 19:35Speaker 4: As long as you make me chocolate chip cookies. I

- 19:40Speaker 3: Well, I do all the cooking at home, and we

- 19:48Speaker 3: food for you.
- 19:50Speaker 2: That's fair, that's fair.

- 21:30Speaker 1: you to seed Geek, MLB's official ticket marketplace. Let's start
- 21:34Speaker 1: with our free agent check in on Kyle Tucker ends
- 21:39Speaker 1: up signing for four years, two hundred and forty million.
- 21:40Speaker 1: There's opt that's in there, and so far this season,
- 21:45Speaker 1: if we go by Baseball Reference war, he's got point
- 21:47Speaker 1: one more that's not great, and at the plate he's
- 21:52Speaker 1: got a ninety six ops plus it's a little bit
- 21:55Speaker 1: below average. He had a slow start. Dave Roberts talked
- 21:59Speaker 1: a lot about how he felt like he was pressing
- 22:02Speaker 1: a little bit. Joining the new team, they got things
- 22:06Speaker 1: a little simplified. He's playing better lately, it's a long season.
- 22:10Speaker 2: He'll be fine. I'm not worried about Kyle Tucker.
- 22:13Speaker 1: He had to walk off for them the other day.
- 22:14Speaker 2: He'll be fine. No, I'm not not worried about I'm
- 22:17Speaker 2: just not. I mean, he'll be fine.
- 22:19Speaker 1: Will he be a superstar? No?
- 22:21Speaker 2: I never thought. I never thought he was. I mean,
- 22:23Speaker 2: maybe I was wrong in this crouchpright disrude me. I
- 22:25Speaker 2: never thought he was even in Houston. When he was,
- 22:27Speaker 2: they were talking about him being an MVP. He never
- 22:29Speaker 2: had superstar vibes, right, And that's not a knock. Some
- 22:34Speaker 2: guys just don't have that. They can be unbelievably good players.
- 22:37Speaker 2: But he fits in perfect in La because he doesn't
- 22:40Speaker 2: have to be the superstar guy.
- 22:41Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean he doesn't. He's quiet, he isn't like
- 22:44Speaker 1: doing any of that.
- 22:45Speaker 2: He doesn't attention. He's supposed to do his job, which
- 22:47Speaker 2: is fine. There's a lot of those guys, but like he,
- 22:51Speaker 2: you know, Aaron Judge, say what you want. He has
- 22:53Speaker 2: superstar vibes when you see Mike Trout, even though he
- 22:56Speaker 2: doesn't do a ton of stuff. He has super when
- 22:58Speaker 2: you walk up to Mike Trout. And this is not
- 23:00Speaker 2: a knock. On Kyle Tucker at all because he's an
- 23:03Speaker 2: unbelievably good player. He just doesn't have the There's just
- 23:07Speaker 2: certain players when you're around him, they they just they
- 23:10Speaker 2: have an aura, right, And Kyle Tucker, even on the
- 23:13Speaker 2: astros like Carlos Korea, Altuve Jordan, because he's such a
- 23:18Speaker 2: big guy, like they have this You're like, whoa. I mean,
- 23:21Speaker 2: Kyle Tucker was always kind of like in the corner,
- 23:23Speaker 2: like kind of I would say hiding, but kind of
- 23:25Speaker 2: just chilling in the corner. I don't know, it's it's again.
- 23:29Speaker 2: I don't want if people think I'm knocking on him
- 23:31Speaker 2: at all, because he's not. He's gonna he's gonna be fine.
- 23:33Speaker 2: He's gonna have a great year. If he stays out,
- 23:35Speaker 2: he's gonna be fine.
- 23:35Speaker 1: Yeah, Jen z introvert, That's that's his game.
- 23:38Speaker 2: That's cool. Yeah.
- 23:41Speaker 4: I wouldn't say he's ever. He's had flashes where he
- 23:45Speaker 4: could be a superstar, but I think he's a star.
- 23:49Speaker 4: I think he absolutely changed the landscape on what guys
- 23:53Speaker 4: are gonna make in free agency at some point, like
- 23:56Speaker 4: when you have essentially he has two years guaranteed for
- 24:01Speaker 4: one hundred and fourteen million, like he took the money.
- 24:06Speaker 4: He's gonna go be a integral piece to this team.
- 24:09Speaker 4: And I think for Dodger fans, if you say it's
- 24:12Speaker 4: a waste of money, he'll start. He'll get right back
- 24:15Speaker 4: to you know, one twenty five to one forty ops plus.
- 24:20Speaker 4: Like that's where he is the years he stays healthy.
- 24:22Speaker 4: The one year where he wasn't healthy, it looked like
- 24:24Speaker 4: he could have won an MVP. He was going in
- 24:26Speaker 4: that direction, but could have, would have, should have he
- 24:30Speaker 4: didn't stay healthy. So to me, he's you know, he's
- 24:32Speaker 4: a five he's a five war player, which you're paying
- 24:35Speaker 4: sixty million dollars for for one year. It's probably a
- 24:39Speaker 4: little expensive, but the Dodgers can handle it, and he
- 24:43Speaker 4: absolutely makes this team better. And I don't really care
- 24:45Speaker 4: that he's started out with a would you say point
- 24:47Speaker 4: one war for the season.
- 24:49Speaker 2: He'll be fine.
- 24:51Speaker 1: Yep, there's the last ten games. Still not great, but
- 24:55Speaker 1: he's fine.
- 24:56Speaker 2: He's fine.
- 24:57Speaker 1: Yeah, nobody's looking at him saying, what's their record? Them
- 25:01Speaker 1: all the wins? It's really good. Let's do one more
- 25:04Speaker 1: for now and then we'll get back to these later.
- 25:06Speaker 1: Boba Schett.
- 25:10Speaker 2: Homer yesterday, first pitch, right Abotaco. I think Bo's gonna
- 25:15Speaker 2: be fine. Listen, he switched teams for the first time.
- 25:17Speaker 2: He switched positions to third base, the place he had
- 25:20Speaker 2: never really played before. I think I think Bo's gonna
- 25:23Speaker 2: be fine too. I think he's gonna hit in this contract,
- 25:26Speaker 2: and I think he's going to be fine. Now will
- 25:27Speaker 2: the Mets be fine? We'll see, But I think Bo's
- 25:29Speaker 2: gonna be fine. But remember when we had bow on
- 25:32Speaker 2: in spring training and I said something to him and
- 25:33Speaker 2: he's like, oh, I remember what you said about my leg.
- 25:36Speaker 2: Have you seen me hit? That's confidence and I don't
- 25:40Speaker 2: I don't know that you can shake that confidence. So
- 25:42Speaker 2: I think he's gonna I mean, the numbers are the numbers.
- 25:44Speaker 2: But again, switch teams for the first time, switching positions.
- 25:47Speaker 2: They're not doing well, and that adds up to a
- 25:49Speaker 2: lot of pressure. He's thinking, this is all my fault,
- 25:51Speaker 2: this is all my fault. It's all my fault. And
- 25:53Speaker 2: if you notice, he's gotten so much out of the
- 25:54Speaker 2: zone when he used Tod not go out of the
- 25:56Speaker 2: zone this much, and that shows me that he's pushing
- 25:59Speaker 2: way too hard.
- 25:59Speaker 1: Yeah, they threw a lot at him. I mean, you
- 26:02Speaker 1: should be playing second, he.
- 26:05Speaker 4: Makes a lot of contact with pitches out of his own.
- 26:07Speaker 4: He's not gonna walk a lot, so he's gonna be
- 26:09Speaker 4: kind of I don't want to say he's just gonna
- 26:11Speaker 4: be different than Wan Soto, but the same person, Same
- 26:14Speaker 4: New York fans gonna complain about Wuan Soto.
- 26:16Speaker 2: Why didn't he swing at that pitch? It was two
- 26:18Speaker 2: inches off We needed the RBI.
- 26:20Speaker 4: Well, you know what, Now you got a guy in
- 26:22Speaker 4: a line up, Boba Schett, who's going to be able
- 26:24Speaker 4: to drive those guys in. And when the Mets start
- 26:26Speaker 4: getting guys on and Juan Soto on him play an
- 26:29Speaker 4: entire season, if he's hitting behind one or you know,
- 26:33Speaker 4: if he's leading off or from him, he's gonna have
- 26:35Speaker 4: one hundred runs or one hundred RBIs, whatever it is,
- 26:38Speaker 4: because just a lot of stuff happens around Wan Soto.
- 26:41Speaker 4: When you have a guy like bo who is able
- 26:44Speaker 4: to hit a lot of different pitches for hits, not
- 26:48Speaker 4: just and right now he's just making contact with him
- 26:51Speaker 4: and he hasn't gotten he has racked up those hits, he'll.
- 26:53Speaker 2: Be right up there in the league lead of hits
- 26:55Speaker 2: by the end of the season.
- 26:57Speaker 1: His bad and ball metrics have been pretty good. I
- 27:00Speaker 1: mean he's had two thirty seven batting average expected batting
- 27:03Speaker 1: to eighty eight. I know you guys don't love this stuff,
- 27:04Speaker 1: but you can get unlucky for a few weeks. We
- 27:06Speaker 1: know that, right if it's over the course of the season.
- 27:08Speaker 1: You want to make a case, fine, but average exa
- 27:10Speaker 1: blow is well well above average and a good spot.
- 27:14Speaker 1: You know, there's a good amount of red on the
- 27:15Speaker 1: stack cast page is what you be hard hit squared
- 27:17Speaker 1: up all.
- 27:18Speaker 2: We're talking about two of the best players in baseball
- 27:21Speaker 2: the last yeah, five years. They'll be fine. This happened
- 27:26Speaker 2: in the middle of June and they hadn't switched teams,
- 27:29Speaker 2: he'd be like, ah, they're going to a little bit
- 27:30Speaker 2: of a thing. But because they switch teams and all
- 27:33Speaker 2: this stuff and everyone's like, oh, they're doing Oh no, he'll.
- 27:37Speaker 1: Be fine and commanded a big contract in the off season.
- 27:42Speaker 1: So far doing great. That's why you sign a big
- 27:47Speaker 1: guy like gat.
- 27:48Speaker 2: He takes the ball every fit day, he gets the strikeouts,
- 27:50Speaker 2: he gives you innings. He's a he's someone you look to.
- 27:55Speaker 2: I mean, he's doing great.
- 27:56Speaker 1: Seven in six starts. What's wrong?
- 27:58Speaker 2: Crats does he get enough innings or do people not
- 28:02Speaker 2: care about it? He gives you enough strikeouts, and he
- 28:05Speaker 2: gives you I mean, he gives you one hundred and
- 28:06Speaker 2: seventy five to one hundred and eighty innings every year,
- 28:08Speaker 2: doesn't he?
- 28:09Speaker 1: In baseball? That is a full fledged course.
- 28:12Speaker 2: Yes, he takes the ball thirty two times a year.
- 28:15Speaker 2: That's that is a just and he changes most He
- 28:18Speaker 2: went kind of a different motion. He was like looking
- 28:21Speaker 2: like Fernando Valezuela. Did you see that the other day?
- 28:23Speaker 2: When he finished, he like, we get to the top
- 28:26Speaker 2: of his motion, here would.
- 28:26Speaker 1: Go looking up.
- 28:29Speaker 4: I think that gives a heaven. Yeah, I mean I
- 28:32Speaker 4: think obviously. I think anybody that makes all their starts,
- 28:35Speaker 4: I think that's legit. I think, do you want him
- 28:38Speaker 4: to give you more innings? Does he have it? Does
- 28:41Speaker 4: he have a decline if he'd say, hey, we want
- 28:44Speaker 4: you to have less strikeouts and more you know? To me,
- 28:48Speaker 4: I think it's the walks that if he can cut
- 28:50Speaker 4: the walks down, he would go to that like elite
- 28:53Speaker 4: status in my opinion, Yeah.
- 28:57Speaker 1: Of course. Well, yeah, he strikes out the world to
- 29:01Speaker 1: strike out forty nine punches in thirty one and a third.
- 29:06Speaker 2: And he only had five, but he hit my under
- 29:09Speaker 2: the other day.
- 29:10Speaker 1: He did next up Tatsuya. I can you even judge
- 29:16Speaker 1: him yet? I mean, the one thing I will say
- 29:18Speaker 1: is okay. So he's trying to work his way back
- 29:21Speaker 1: from the IL and had fifty nine pitches in Corpus
- 29:25Speaker 1: CHRISTI with five and run six hits two innings. I mean,
- 29:30Speaker 1: I don't really care. It's nice to have good minor
- 29:32Speaker 1: league results, but I still think he can be good.
- 29:35Speaker 1: I kind of believe the guy when he said, hey,
- 29:37Speaker 1: it's been a little tough for me to adjust. Not
- 29:39Speaker 1: everybody adjusts perfectly. I thinkwise he's got it. He's got
- 29:44Speaker 1: big league stuff krats. Now, is he going to have
- 29:47Speaker 1: to figure out the command? Sure, but I mean he
- 29:50Speaker 1: made strikes.
- 29:50Speaker 4: Some dudes oubt he's got a big league pitch. His
- 29:55Speaker 4: slider is a big league pitch, and I think he
- 29:57Speaker 4: needs to be able to throw enough of his fastball
- 30:02Speaker 4: to be able to keep guys off the slider. Because
- 30:04Speaker 4: as a starter, even if you're a two pitch pitcher,
- 30:07Speaker 4: what are we looking at with Roki. I know they're
- 30:08Speaker 4: both Japanese and so maybe that's not fair, but like
- 30:12Speaker 4: two pitch pitchers on one night. They just say that
- 30:15Speaker 4: we're we're not swinging at one They eliminate that for me,
- 30:19Speaker 4: when a big leaguer goes down to a minor league,
- 30:21Speaker 4: whether it's rehab, whether it's just getting your mind right, whatever,
- 30:25Speaker 4: your minor league appearance is the big the minor leaguers go.
- 30:29Speaker 4: It's a big leaguer. I want to hit a big
- 30:31Speaker 4: leaguer like I want to. I want to, so they're
- 30:33Speaker 4: coming out swinging. My concern there is that he had
- 30:35Speaker 4: three walks, because when you're in Double A, the best
- 30:39Speaker 4: way to make a name for yourself. Oh did you
- 30:41Speaker 4: see what Joe Smith did against Tatsuyoo My when he
- 30:46Speaker 4: came down. Yeah, he squared it up like that's shows
- 30:49Speaker 4: you can hit big league pitching. The three walks, that's
- 30:52Speaker 4: that's the part that's concerning to me. It cares how
- 30:55Speaker 4: many hits he gave up or earned runs he gave up.
- 30:58Speaker 4: Of course, that one dude, you know, there's a bunch
- 31:00Speaker 4: of dudes. I wanted to clip him and hit a homer,
- 31:01Speaker 4: and one dude did. But the walks is what's concerning
- 31:04Speaker 4: to me.
- 31:06Speaker 1: Yeah, if a guy's having trouble adjusting to the majors
- 31:09Speaker 1: in the US. You know, it's worse the miners. So
- 31:13Speaker 1: I'm like, this dude can't catch a break. He can
- 31:16Speaker 1: get dudes out. I know he hasn't used the splitter
- 31:18Speaker 1: much yet three percent, but I think he'll up that usage.
- 31:21Speaker 1: I know right now he just was using the four
- 31:23Speaker 1: seemer and the slider. But I mean I watched a
- 31:27Speaker 1: few of the outings and I'm like, uh, he's got it.
- 31:29Speaker 2: He's got stuff.
- 31:30Speaker 1: Yeah, he's got stuff.
- 31:31Speaker 2: It's just a question is Kenny harness? But this is
- 31:34Speaker 2: the question going in with him, how many innings would
- 31:36Speaker 2: he give? And he's kind of just been the same
- 31:38Speaker 2: as whom the innings is going to give you. I
- 31:41Speaker 2: don't know. I don't know. Is he going to be
- 31:43Speaker 2: able to pitch? Is he going to be hurt?
- 31:44Speaker 1: I mean, what's It's he going to be a reliever.
- 31:47Speaker 2: That was what a lot of people thought. That's why
- 31:49Speaker 2: a lot of teams were scared to sign him. They
- 31:50Speaker 2: thought he would be a reliever.
- 31:51Speaker 1: That's a possibility. Just a couple others. I'll give you
- 31:56Speaker 1: pick one. Ajad of Murkami Ranger Suarez, Pete Alonzo, Framber.
- 32:01Speaker 2: Murkcanbie, Jackpot, Alonso TVD Homer yesterday. Ranger pitch really well.
- 32:07Speaker 2: His last time out was the last one. Robert Rumer
- 32:12Speaker 2: has been okay, but he's been okay. Yeah, three four,
- 32:17Speaker 2: one and six about what he's been though. That's I mean,
- 32:20Speaker 2: he's low threes. He's always a low threes guy. He's
- 32:22Speaker 2: been fine.
- 32:23Speaker 1: He has those starts where.
- 32:24Speaker 2: He has one starter to like one start a month
- 32:26Speaker 2: where you're just like, what the heck happened? And then
- 32:28Speaker 2: he'll go four starts in a row where he's just
- 32:30Speaker 2: like unhittable, and then he just has one blow up
- 32:32Speaker 2: and you're like, how does this happens.
- 32:34Speaker 4: That's why teams don't want ground ball guys because sometimes
- 32:38Speaker 4: those ground ball guys people start getting under it. I
- 32:41Speaker 4: think Framber has been fine. I think the one person
- 32:43Speaker 4: is not on this list that I love that has
- 32:46Speaker 4: had an incredible start to his free agent year, ryde Hearn.
- 32:51Speaker 4: He's killing it in Pittsburgh and he's playing a new position.
- 32:55Speaker 4: So when we talk about the Pirates, like I mean,
- 32:58Speaker 4: when we talk about the Mets, you say, oh man,
- 33:00Speaker 4: you know all these guys are playing new positions.
- 33:02Speaker 2: Rana Hearn's trying to.
- 33:04Speaker 4: Figure out how to play right field with another guy
- 33:07Speaker 4: that's playing in center that's like kind of still trying
- 33:10Speaker 4: to figure it out too. So they're figuring it out together,
- 33:13Speaker 4: and he's he's acclimated to Pittsburgh really really well. So
- 33:17Speaker 4: good for Pittsburgh for making that signing.
- 33:20Speaker 1: Great call. Three twenty three five homers, twenty RBIs in
- 33:26Speaker 1: twenty eight games, a nine to twenty five ops and
- 33:29Speaker 1: a one to fifty seven ops plus. That's a signing.
- 33:34Speaker 2: Two years value. But they but they also spent money.
- 33:38Speaker 4: It's not like they were like, ooh, let's see, we'll
- 33:40Speaker 4: take a we'll take a risk with like a one year,
- 33:44Speaker 4: eight million dollars signing and it paid out. The Pirates
- 33:47Speaker 4: went out on a limb and signed a guy who's
- 33:50Speaker 4: had two and a half really good years once he
- 33:53Speaker 4: started to get more playing time. But man, like you,
- 33:57Speaker 4: you are getting your money's worth. Not that they couldn't
- 33:59Speaker 4: have used Kyle Swarber. Also, not that they couldn't have
- 34:02Speaker 4: used a Henyo Suarez. But this is a great signing
- 34:06Speaker 4: by the Pirates. And you know, I love I love
- 34:09Speaker 4: Ryan o'harn.
- 34:10Speaker 1: This is the whole point. You have some holes in
- 34:12Speaker 1: the roster. They don't feel them for ten years, they
- 34:14Speaker 1: finally decide to try to do it. And anybody in baseball,
- 34:18Speaker 1: any team, do you think that twenty nine it cost
- 34:21Speaker 1: two years twenty nine mil. Do I think they'll hang on.
- 34:24Speaker 1: I don't think they'll make the playoffs, but I think
- 34:25Speaker 1: they'll hang around this season. Yeah, I think they'll just miss.
- 34:30Speaker 1: But I think the bullpen might cost them. We'll see.
- 34:35Speaker 4: I mean, yeah, are they gonna let their starters? That's
- 34:38Speaker 4: that's where I think. I think the bullpen is going
- 34:40Speaker 4: to cost them too. But are they gonna let their
- 34:42Speaker 4: starters say, yeah, we're gonna We're gonna let you go.
- 34:45Speaker 4: We're gonna let you go deeper because they got young starters,
- 34:49Speaker 4: and the fear is don't let Bubba Chandler get hurt.
- 34:52Speaker 4: I know he's got to stop walking as many guys,
- 34:54Speaker 4: so go deeper. But are they gonna let them go
- 34:56Speaker 4: that seven innings instead of six and die? Because if
- 35:00Speaker 4: they go to seven and now, all of a sudden,
- 35:01Speaker 4: your bullpen doesn't have to be as good. So I
- 35:04Speaker 4: think there's gonna be there's gonna be some tough calls
- 35:06Speaker 4: for Don Kelly. The last thing with O'Hearn they're letting
- 35:09Speaker 4: him play against lefties. He's almost hitting like two ninety.
- 35:12Speaker 4: I think his OPS is right at eight hundred against
- 35:16Speaker 4: lefties this year.
- 35:18Speaker 2: No, I'm sorry, it's over eight hundred. I thought it
- 35:20Speaker 2: was so like you.
- 35:22Speaker 4: When you have a team that paid somebody, you get
- 35:25Speaker 4: an opportunity to play. Maybe these dudes actually play better
- 35:29Speaker 4: when they get an opportunity to play.
