- 0:00Welcome to Allowed and Lifted. I'm your host,
- 0:02Betsy Hamm. And today's quick lift is all about
- 0:04three powerful words, active, ageless, and authentic.
- 0:10In my recent conversation with Patti Sibach and
- 0:12Kathy Anderson -Martin, they shared what they
- 0:14call the triple threat. And it's not about doing
- 0:16it all. It's about living true, moving with purpose,
- 0:19and thriving at every stage of life. They reminded
- 0:22us that you can't pour from an empty cup. That
- 0:25health and wellness fuel Everything else and
- 0:27that age is never a limit. It's just a number
- 0:29So in this quick lift, I'll break down the biggest
- 0:32lessons and give you practical ways to apply
- 0:34them right now Let's dig into the key takeaways
- 0:45and action items first up authentic Kathy gave
- 0:49the definition of authentic as true to oneself,
- 0:52your values and your personality. I think it's
- 0:54great to revisit this definition because it's
- 0:56a word we throw around a lot. And at the end
- 0:58of the day, it's about being true to who you
- 1:00are. We try to be so many things to so many people.
- 1:03We try to be these amazing moms and wives and
- 1:06coworkers and friends and daughters and the list
- 1:09goes on. So sometimes we kind of forget who we
- 1:11are and what we really need to be focused on
- 1:14because it's difficult to be all things to all
- 1:16people. You need to be true to yourself. So sometimes
- 1:18we need to take a step back and reprioritize.
- 1:21Now, I do love that they made the point that
- 1:24being true to yourself doesn't mean that you
- 1:26don't be respectful to what other people feel.
- 1:29need. So it's a balance. And I joked like, yeah,
- 1:32can I just go on a two month vacation and you
- 1:34know, leave my job and my family and just because
- 1:36I need to recenter, that'd be amazing. But that
- 1:39would not be respectful to others. Patty was
- 1:41very authentic. And she shared a story about
- 1:43when she was 40, she felt like a failure. And
- 1:47none of her cups were full because she was trying
- 1:49to balance work and kids and life and a failed
- 1:51marriage. And she had to take a step back and
- 1:54put what was most important first, which was
- 1:56her kids. So she had to reshift she had to focus.
- 1:59And the biggest thing is, in addition to refocusing,
- 2:02she had to give herself grace. This is something
- 2:05I think we need to remind ourselves of time and
- 2:07time again. We hold ourselves to such high standards
- 2:10and want to be so amazing. And sometimes you
- 2:12just have to give yourself grace. We're going
- 2:14to have those rough days, rough weeks, maybe
- 2:16even a rough month where we're struggling. So
- 2:18you have to give yourself grace and know that
- 2:20you can reprioritize and move on. I also love
- 2:23that Kathy talked about majoring on the majors
- 2:25and letting go of the small stuff. That's so
- 2:28true. We are all guilty of that at times where
- 2:31we're trying to do all things for all people.
- 2:33And it's just taking a step back and focusing
- 2:36on what's really, really important and letting
- 2:38go of the small stuff. And as we've discussed
- 2:40on other episodes, whether that's outsourcing,
- 2:43getting help, or just not making cookies for
- 2:45the bake sale, it's going to be okay. Action
- 2:47item here is identify your true priorities this
- 2:50season. As I mentioned, your priorities are going
- 2:52to change throughout your life. Ask what is really
- 2:56important and what is just noise. And as a reminder,
- 2:59being true to yourself doesn't mean ignoring
- 3:01how choices affect loved ones. And lastly, practice
- 3:05grace. Next up, action. If you don't have a healthy
- 3:09body mind and spirit, you can't be authentic
- 3:12It's hard to be authentic or confident when you're
- 3:15miserable in your own skin Cathy shared her story
- 3:18of getting healthy and how everything changed
- 3:21when her health changed She started focusing
- 3:23on being better being physically active Patty
- 3:26gave a great analogy of you're given one body.
- 3:29You have to take care of it just like a car.
- 3:31Imagine if you only had one car your entire life
- 3:33that was supposed to get you around. You'd probably
- 3:35take better care of it, right? And you have to
- 3:37look at that same way with your body. We have
- 3:39one body. So think about how you can take better
- 3:42care of it. And that comes into being physically
- 3:44active, what we eat, and just how those things
- 3:47impact stress on our lives and also how you treat
- 3:50yourself. We talked a lot about healthy habits
- 3:53and making it sustainable. Patty and Kathy were
- 3:55not here to peddle some amazing diet or tell
- 3:59you to go to the gym seven days a week or restrict
- 4:01your calories to an insane level. It's just making
- 4:04good choices and making them a habit and making
- 4:07it something that can be sustainable. They talked
- 4:10about their giving wellness program that they
- 4:11launched which I love and Kathy shared how part
- 4:14of her journey to being healthier is starting
- 4:16to do 10 ,000 steps years ago and she has this
- 4:19amazing record of getting her 10 ,000 steps in
- 4:21a day. It's become her stress reliever and she
- 4:24enjoys being outside. So it's really about finding
- 4:26your thing. Maybe it's going on walks like Kathy
- 4:28talked about. Maybe it's going to the gym and
- 4:30just walking on a treadmill starting to lift
- 4:32weights. It's just finding the thing that you
- 4:35do enjoy spending time doing because it doesn't
- 4:37become a chore. becomes part of your habit. They
- 4:40also talked about finding your why and those
- 4:42reasons change over time. At the end of the day,
- 4:45it's about being healthy. Maybe it's because
- 4:46you do need to lose some weight. Maybe you need
- 4:48to get your blood pressure or cholesterol level
- 4:50down. Maybe it's because you want to be a great
- 4:52example for your kids. And I think that's an
- 4:54awesome point. And something I've certainly considered
- 4:56through the years is as I shared on the episode,
- 4:58I enjoy working out. I think it's a great stress
- 5:01reliever, whether it's yoga or going to the gym.
- 5:03Back in the day, I used to run a lot, but it's
- 5:05finding something that I spend time doing that
- 5:08makes me feel better. and I hope that my girls
- 5:10notice that. Now, of course, they're in sports
- 5:12mode, so working out isn't on their list if it's
- 5:15not related to sports, but I hope they start
- 5:17to see that, you know, oh, when I was growing
- 5:19up, my mom always did take time to go to the
- 5:22gym, go to yoga, and to focus on being healthy.
- 5:25It's not just about losing weight. Yes, sometimes
- 5:28that's a great benefit, but it's about being
- 5:30healthy. I also love that they said, it's never
- 5:32too late. It's just about movement. So think
- 5:35about what you like to do and start spending
- 5:37time doing that. And if you don't know how to
- 5:39start, consult a professional and I do not mean
- 5:42on TikTok. Find somebody locally where you live
- 5:45and then work with them to set realistic goals,
- 5:47small attainable goals, and just start taking
- 5:50steps forward. It's just progress. Action item
- 5:53here, find your why, let it evolve, pick one
- 5:56movement that you love, whether it's walking,
- 5:59lifting, dancing, yoga, start small and keep
- 6:02it sustainable. And as mentioned, consult a pro
- 6:05if needed. The last piece, ageless. I love when
- 6:08they got very excited about the fact that they
- 6:10love celebrating birthdays because we aren't
- 6:12dead. And while we were joking about it, It's
- 6:15true. And I think as we go through our lives,
- 6:18sometimes we hit these milestone birthdays that
- 6:19we're super excited about, you know, 18, 21.
- 6:22And then as we keep having those birthdays, we
- 6:24sometimes are like, Oh my God, I can't believe
- 6:26I'm 40. I can't believe I'm 50. And we have to
- 6:29flip the script on that and be thankful that
- 6:31we're celebrating those birthdays. And of course
- 6:34we want to continue to celebrate birthdays. So
- 6:36we're not dead. And while you're doing that,
- 6:38you want to have a good lifestyle. And that goes
- 6:41back to being active. I also love that they talked
- 6:44about part of being ageless is that there's still
- 6:46opportunity. They have friends who are thinking
- 6:49about retirement, retiring, getting their plan.
- 6:52And these two ladies, they have like the pedal
- 6:54down and they are continuing to move forward,
- 6:57making career changes, making reasonable choices
- 7:00of things that they want to do, spending time
- 7:02on the stuff that they love. And that's so awesome.
- 7:05I love that. they have this almost like second
- 7:07act from a professional standpoint that they
- 7:09both have been doing and coincidentally both
- 7:11of them are helping other people which is pretty
- 7:13awesome too. I love that they said they don't
- 7:15want to slow down and that's obviously clear
- 7:19from the way that they are handling the last
- 7:21couple years. The other pieces we talked about
- 7:23with ageless is having a sense of humor and being
- 7:26able to laugh at yourself is important. Not sweating
- 7:29the small stuff. Sometimes you just have to move
- 7:31on. The other piece that they talked about, which
- 7:33I think is great, it's okay to be down, just
- 7:35don't stay there. And in order to not stay there,
- 7:37sometimes you can pick yourself up on your own
- 7:39and that's great. But sometimes you need those
- 7:41supportive friends. And Patty talked about how
- 7:44it took her a really long time to find her tribe.
- 7:46She always had friends, but they just weren't
- 7:48the people who maybe had the same values and
- 7:50beliefs and way of life that she did. But now
- 7:53she has found her tribe. So she said, find your
- 7:56tribe, it's out there. Find people who will cheer
- 7:58for you and maybe even smack you when you need
- 8:00it. Let's be honest, sometimes that's what we
- 8:02also need too. The last thing we talked about
- 8:05with ageless is perspective. Often it's not life
- 8:08shattering the things that you're stressing about.
- 8:10So take a step back and think about what can
- 8:13you control and what can you not and what really
- 8:15is going to have a major impact on moving forward.
- 8:18There's going to be times in life where things
- 8:19don't go your way. There's going to be moments
- 8:21and it's not if it's when it happens to everybody,
- 8:24right? Sometimes big, sometimes small, but things
- 8:27are going to happen. So get through it, get the
- 8:30support that you need and move on. Action item
- 8:32here, find your tribe, people who cheer you on
- 8:34and hold you accountable. Embrace the change
- 8:37and keep learning. Age is a number, not a limit.
- 8:40And when hard moments hit, because they will.
- 8:43Don't stay stuck. I love how Patty and Kathy
- 8:45show us that being authentic means focusing on
- 8:48what truly matters. Being active means caring
- 8:50for your body and mind so you can show up fully.
- 8:53And being ageless means refusing to let your
- 8:56years define you. If you haven't listened to
- 8:58Kathy and Patty's episode, I strongly encourage
- 9:00you to do so. And as always follow Loud and Lifted
