- 0:27Speaker 2: I brought Christmas presents for Brandon and Kevin and they
- 0:30Speaker 2: aren't here.
- 0:31Speaker 3: Oh well then handle over.
- 0:34Speaker 2: No, they don't get them.
- 0:35Speaker 3: You snooze, you lose. For real, They're not gonna get him. No,
- 0:41Speaker 3: even like after Christmas, no.
- 0:43Speaker 2: Think so wow, that's what's Christmas is over.
- 0:46Speaker 3: No, that's not true. That's not true. And this is
- 0:49Speaker 3: no better time to tell you that the present that
- 0:52Speaker 3: I want for you has not arrived. That I got
- 0:54Speaker 3: for you, I bought it and has not arrived. I
- 0:56Speaker 3: bought it two weeks ago.
- 0:57Speaker 2: But I'm here.
- 0:58Speaker 3: Oh you're not leaving.
- 1:00Speaker 2: No, I'm saying I am here on Christmas for you
- 1:04Speaker 2: to go, Hey, your present's not hearing. I have their
- 1:06Speaker 2: presence here.
- 1:07Speaker 3: That's crazy, dude. So they're just going to lose out
- 1:08Speaker 3: on their presence, I believe.
- 1:10Speaker 2: So wow, maybe not.
- 1:13Speaker 3: We'll see you might see Brandon right, we'll see Mike.
- 1:16Speaker 2: I do have yours, Oh, thank you, so one from
- 1:18Speaker 2: TikTok shop. I can show you one of them as well.
- 1:20Speaker 2: Something something that I bought you because I bought you
- 1:23Speaker 2: and Eddi's gifts off TikTok shop and I got Eddie
- 1:25Speaker 2: a flamethrower and I got you something. But I have
- 1:27Speaker 2: something that I just I can't keep in my house.
- 1:31Speaker 2: So one of the things is something that is it alive? No,
- 1:36Speaker 2: it's something that I want nothing to do with and
- 1:39Speaker 2: I own it, but I'm just going to give.
- 1:40Speaker 3: It to you. Is it legal?
- 1:42Speaker 2: Say I make gad to arrest it for it?
- 1:43Speaker 3: It is.
- 1:44Speaker 2: No. The other thing I did buy for you. Here's
- 1:47Speaker 2: the thing I'm gonna give you because maybe you use
- 1:49Speaker 2: it for your studio. It's Vince Young signed Longhorn. Oh
- 1:52Speaker 2: my gosh, that's amazing. I'll pull my headphones out. Hold
- 1:55Speaker 2: I can't hear you. But so you can have this
- 1:58Speaker 2: and I since you're a long horn fan, I literally
- 2:00Speaker 2: am building a new space and putting helmets into it
- 2:04Speaker 2: because I collected like the ones I love. He said,
- 2:09Speaker 2: Oh my God, to give this thing away. I got
- 2:11Speaker 2: so excited. I pulled my headphones out. It's like getting
- 2:13Speaker 2: rid of that curse doll. I've been looking for a
- 2:16Speaker 2: long horns helmet, like if you look at my Google history.
- 2:18Speaker 4: It is on there.
- 2:19Speaker 2: Well, so this is a Vince Young sign. It says
- 2:21Speaker 2: National Champs. It's a replica home.
- 2:22Speaker 3: That's really cool.
- 2:23Speaker 2: You can put that in your studio. That's a Christmas gift,
- 2:26Speaker 2: just mostly because I don't want.
- 2:27Speaker 3: It, and that's what you don't want in your house.
- 2:28Speaker 2: It's just been sitting there and it makes me vomit.
- 2:31Speaker 2: I walk by and I feel ill.
- 2:33Speaker 3: You almost you gag every time you see.
- 2:35Speaker 2: And I thought, maybe it'll add to the aesthetic from
- 2:38Speaker 2: all the helmets I'm using in another place, and I
- 2:39Speaker 2: just I couldn't get rid of that. Can't use it
- 2:42Speaker 2: for anything. Okay, that's you. This is the thing. Any
- 2:48Speaker 2: would you walk tech this? This is what I got
- 2:50Speaker 2: you from TikTok shop. And my wife said that's kind
- 2:57Speaker 2: of stupid, and I said, no, I think Michael like
- 3:00Speaker 2: it because I knew I was gonna give you the
- 3:01Speaker 2: helmet too. So what it is and you can pull
- 3:05Speaker 2: it out. It's a Ninja Turtles pizza slicer. It's a
- 3:12Speaker 2: ninja turtle pizza slicer that looks like one of you
- 3:16Speaker 2: know how you get targeted ads. These have both been
- 3:18Speaker 2: things in my targeted ads. Really, I'm seen this thing
- 3:20Speaker 2: on TikTok and I'm like, man, I would come your
- 3:23Speaker 2: ninja slice with that thing. I saw it and thought, man,
- 3:25Speaker 2: Mike would love that. The thing is when I show
- 3:27Speaker 2: my wife, she said he doesn't eat pizza, he's vegan.
- 3:30Speaker 2: I said, I'm sure there's something cut with it though.
- 3:32Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah, my weapon. I make these little pizza pockets.
- 3:34Speaker 3: I can slice them with this thing.
- 3:36Speaker 2: Can you open that? Yeah, I'd like to see. I
- 3:38Speaker 2: didn't never open the box.
- 3:39Speaker 3: So it's like Raphael's weapon, the SI, the SI, but
- 3:44Speaker 3: it's got a pizza slicer thing.
- 3:46Speaker 2: It slices, it dices.
- 3:49Speaker 3: That's hilarious, dude said, there it is. Man. Sometimes you know,
- 3:54Speaker 3: things pop up on TikTok and you're like, this is
- 3:56Speaker 3: just perfect.
- 3:57Speaker 2: I mean, do I want to I mean time kick
- 4:00Speaker 2: off Kevin. Yes, he had surgery on his shoulder and
- 4:04Speaker 2: so that's why he's not here.
- 4:06Speaker 3: This is awesome, that's huge.
- 4:10Speaker 2: Yeah, I thought you'd like that TikTok talk. You just
- 4:12Speaker 2: you don't know one it's gonna get here, though sometimes
- 4:15Speaker 2: it comes from like China. Yeah, so you don't know
- 4:17Speaker 2: when it's actually gonna arrive. All right, let me give
- 4:21Speaker 2: is he like so hurd? He can't answer the phone.
- 4:23Speaker 3: I don't think so he sent us a picture yesterday.
- 4:26Speaker 2: If he's not so heard he can't answer the phone.
- 4:27Speaker 3: Why isn't here? Well, because I don't think he can
- 4:29Speaker 3: use his right arm or whatever arm it is. Well,
- 4:32Speaker 3: he types a lot and edits.
- 4:38Speaker 2: Let's FaceTime.
- 4:39Speaker 3: Okay, you look good.
- 4:44Speaker 2: He's so close to my face. Doesn't matter, like when
- 4:46Speaker 2: I hold it so close to my face.
- 4:49Speaker 3: Oh no, there is.
- 4:53Speaker 2: So we're here.
- 4:55Speaker 3: Ask him? Why are you not here?
- 4:58Speaker 5: Because I'm handicapped due drugs?
- 5:01Speaker 3: Oh okay, So we're doing makes sense.
- 5:03Speaker 2: We're doing whistles today, okay. And we are handing out
- 5:08Speaker 2: Christmas presents and I had yours, but you're not here
- 5:09Speaker 2: to get it. So the rule is if you're not here,
- 5:14Speaker 2: you don't get it.
- 5:16Speaker 5: So who's gonna get it?
- 5:18Speaker 2: Are you messed up? Onst He's like, what did you
- 5:24Speaker 2: have done?
- 5:26Speaker 6: I had a complete tear in my rotator cuffs, so
- 5:30Speaker 6: they tore like a tendon and replaced it and all
- 5:33Speaker 6: that good stuff in this.
- 5:35Speaker 2: At least at your left hand. How do you think
- 5:37Speaker 2: about that?
- 5:37Speaker 5: Oh, thank god if my left hand be screwed.
- 5:40Speaker 2: So what's the situation. You have a couple of weeks
- 5:42Speaker 2: now off.
- 5:46Speaker 6: Of the I'll be in this cleen for six weeks.
- 5:48Speaker 6: I don't know if it's this one, but I'll be
- 5:49Speaker 6: in a sling for six weeks.
- 5:51Speaker 2: No, but I'm saying you have a couple of weeks
- 5:52Speaker 2: off of work, so that's a probably advantageous to your healing.
- 5:57Speaker 6: Yeah, that's why I did it at this time, and
- 5:58Speaker 6: so we could have a couple weeks off to be
- 6:01Speaker 6: a little light work.
- 6:02Speaker 5: And uh to tell about a little bit with the healing.
- 6:05Speaker 3: Yes, isn't that nice of him? Though? That like he
- 6:07Speaker 3: scheduled it around this time because he knew he was
- 6:09Speaker 3: gonna have two weeks off and he wouldn't affect his
- 6:11Speaker 3: work for two weeks. Yes, it's nice. I wouldn't I
- 6:15Speaker 3: would do in the middle of the year. I'd be like,
- 6:17Speaker 3: I'm out six weeks.
- 6:18Speaker 2: Sorry, but then somebody then we'd get somebody to replace
- 6:20Speaker 2: you then maybe better than you.
- 6:21Speaker 3: Know or you guys are just like, man, we can't
- 6:23Speaker 3: do this with that Eddi, this is so hard.
- 6:24Speaker 2: It's funny you have that attitude because the mine's exactly
- 6:26Speaker 2: the opposse when it comes to that stuff. Okay, well,
- 6:29Speaker 2: I hope you have merry Christmas.
- 6:31Speaker 5: Oh you're recorder right now?
- 6:32Speaker 3: Yeah, man, you're on.
- 6:33Speaker 2: We're literally doing the episode.
- 6:37Speaker 5: That makes sense, all right?
- 6:39Speaker 3: Would you think we're just calling you for fun?
- 6:42Speaker 2: Yeah? I mean talking into microphones. I told you, Hey,
- 6:51Speaker 2: how was the surgery though?
- 6:52Speaker 7: Was it?
- 6:53Speaker 3: Was it like easy? Uh?
- 6:56Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 6:56Speaker 5: I mean I just I don't remember anything.
- 6:58Speaker 6: They put me to sleep and I woke up next
- 6:59Speaker 6: thaying know and my wife by my side, and that
- 7:02Speaker 6: was all.
- 7:02Speaker 5: Good to go.
- 7:03Speaker 3: Are you able to use your hand like it's in
- 7:05Speaker 3: a sling, but like, will you be able to type?
- 7:07Speaker 5: No, it's still numb right now. I would tune some stuff.
- 7:09Speaker 6: This morning, I was talking with just one hand because
- 7:11Speaker 6: my fingers are still numb from the stuff of the
- 7:14Speaker 6: game yesterday. It's numb for like thirty hours.
- 7:17Speaker 2: Dang. Uh do you want to I can show you
- 7:20Speaker 2: you're present. Do you want to see him?
- 7:21Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 7:21Speaker 5: Yeah, what is it?
- 7:22Speaker 3: I'm gonna hold the phone?
- 7:24Speaker 2: Yeah, I can do it. Okay, So.
- 7:30Speaker 3: First off, you need that back back. No, I guess.
- 7:33Speaker 2: Okay, First off, I got you the same thing I
- 7:37Speaker 2: got Eddie a flamethrower.
- 7:40Speaker 3: You're gonna love it, dude.
- 7:43Speaker 2: Well, I saw how much Eddie loved his, and I
- 7:44Speaker 2: was like, oh, okay, Kevin, one of those. Eddie really
- 7:46Speaker 2: sold it that it was good. And then I got
- 7:49Speaker 2: you a and I put a bow on it. I
- 7:52Speaker 2: got you a Drake May rookie card.
- 7:54Speaker 3: What there you go? Oh, that's sweet, that's awesome.
- 7:59Speaker 2: There you go, Drake May twenty twenty four rookie. It's
- 8:01Speaker 2: is in North Carolina.
- 8:04Speaker 5: That's fine.
- 8:05Speaker 3: Well, no, that mean that's awesome, dude, Not fine, that'll
- 8:10Speaker 3: do awesome.
- 8:11Speaker 2: Okay, So I'll uh, I'll just keep it here. I'll
- 8:14Speaker 2: put in my office. You get it when you come back.
- 8:17Speaker 5: Okay, all right, sounds good.
- 8:19Speaker 2: All right, buddy, Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas?
- 8:21Speaker 3: Kevin.
- 8:22Speaker 2: Bye. Alright, there he is.
- 8:24Speaker 3: So he got his present, he got his president. Off there, Oh,
- 8:27Speaker 3: get off the he's.
- 8:29Speaker 2: All right there, he's drunk. Can we call Brandon? Yes,
- 8:34Speaker 2: Brandon was a little different. And I'll tell you why.
- 8:36Speaker 3: I like that. You got Kevin a flamethrower.
- 8:39Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 8:40Speaker 2: Once I saw yours, I thought you knewho because I
- 8:42Speaker 2: went and bought that one and ordered yours. You're just
- 8:45Speaker 2: bigger though, that's awesome.
- 8:46Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 8:50Speaker 2: If he doesn't answer, he doesn't get the present.
- 8:51Speaker 3: Come on, Brandon, Yes, there he is, Brandon. You're on mute.
- 9:01Speaker 3: Oh he's mute.
- 9:02Speaker 2: How do you answer on mute?
- 9:04Speaker 3: He's that guy on zoom.
- 9:06Speaker 2: Yeah, but he answered, and it's on mute on a call, Harry,
- 9:09Speaker 2: we can't hear you, Harry, I can't hear you what
- 9:12Speaker 2: I'm watching him?
- 9:13Speaker 3: How do you an your volume? Your volumes are right.
- 9:16Speaker 2: Yes, it's it's all the way up. Can you hear me?
- 9:20Speaker 3: Okay? Yeah, yeah, that's bizarre. Huh.
- 9:25Speaker 2: All right, he's got ten seconds or he doesn't get
- 9:27Speaker 2: his prize.
- 9:27Speaker 3: Of You know what happens sometimes is it connects to
- 9:29Speaker 3: a bluetooth. You ever do that word automatically next like
- 9:33Speaker 3: to your car? Oh yeah, and you're like, why is
- 9:35Speaker 3: this not working?
- 9:36Speaker 2: Then I've been on the phone and like a valet's
- 9:39Speaker 2: taking my car and they're talking. Then the person is
- 9:41Speaker 2: still talking in the valet's like wait, yes, exactly, all right,
- 9:44Speaker 2: so we'll give him ten seconds and then we'll just
- 9:48Speaker 2: move on.
- 9:49Speaker 3: Brandon, it's your gifts, don't lose it. Hey, are you
- 9:55Speaker 3: calling him or you're waiting for him to call me back?
- 9:57Speaker 2: To call me back? Should I call him back?
- 9:58Speaker 3: Did he do the sign of I'll call you?
- 10:00Speaker 2: I don't know what he did. There is my gate calling?
- 10:04Speaker 2: Oh there is? Hey, what was happening?
- 10:06Speaker 3: Then?
- 10:06Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 10:07Speaker 5: It was It was my laptop. My laptop was just like, nah,
- 10:11Speaker 5: I'm gonna I'm gonna mute it all right.
- 10:12Speaker 3: So Mary Christmas, Brandon, Merry Christmas, buddy.
- 10:17Speaker 2: Hey, So we're doing our Christmas Ver segment on Whistles
- 10:21Speaker 2: and I was giving everybody their Christmas gifts, and so
- 10:23Speaker 2: I have yours here and I, since you're not you're
- 10:25Speaker 2: not here to meet to give it to I was
- 10:27Speaker 2: just gonna keep it. But I thought I would just
- 10:28Speaker 2: give it to you on zoom and next time you're
- 10:30Speaker 2: here you can get it.
- 10:31Speaker 3: Oh, got you?
- 10:32Speaker 2: Okay? So I this comes from I think I insulted Brandon,
- 10:37Speaker 2: and so my gift is meeting him at the place
- 10:39Speaker 2: where I insulted him.
- 10:40Speaker 3: Huh. So I can show you this an inside story present.
- 10:47Speaker 2: Well, I thought about what I was gonna get Brandon.
- 10:49Speaker 3: What was that? A sex Santa?
- 10:50Speaker 2: It's a bag here, And I thought about doing the
- 10:53Speaker 2: same thing I did with you guys, get him something funny,
- 10:55Speaker 2: and instead I thought, I know, I insulted Brandon, so
- 10:58Speaker 2: I want to do it. So I knew I want
- 10:59Speaker 2: to do it better and make him go I'm sorry.
- 11:03Speaker 2: So what I said to Brandon was I questioned him.
- 11:07Speaker 2: Do you know how I questioned him?
- 11:09Speaker 1: Like?
- 11:09Speaker 4: When?
- 11:09Speaker 3: When? What was the setting?
- 11:11Speaker 2: It was on this show?
- 11:12Speaker 3: On this show? And you questioned him, Brandon?
- 11:14Speaker 2: Do you know how I questioned you?
- 11:16Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 11:17Speaker 5: Did you question me on being a Cowboys fan?
- 11:19Speaker 2: Correct?
- 11:20Speaker 3: Yes, So what I have no is know what the dude?
- 11:24Speaker 3: What what? You'd never give it?
- 11:27Speaker 8: I have a signed Emmitt Smith jersey here, oh with
- 11:31Speaker 8: the tag still on way Yeah, it's like, so I'm
- 11:37Speaker 8: sorry about that.
- 11:38Speaker 2: It's a nineteen ninety two Cowboys jersey Mitchell and Ness,
- 11:42Speaker 2: oh my god real, I had to pull up from
- 11:44Speaker 2: the good collection, and so I like to apologize for
- 11:47Speaker 2: not knowing that you're a Cowboy fan. Bobby, dude, you
- 11:51Speaker 2: didn't have to do that.
- 11:52Speaker 5: Thank you so much? Did it?
- 11:53Speaker 3: Was crazy?

- 12:17Speaker 3: Because that's an awesome jersey, Dude, Like I got Dak.
- 12:21Speaker 3: You've given me a Dak jersey before. That's awesome. You

- 12:30Speaker 5: I that is like the coolest thing ever. Thank you
- 12:33Speaker 5: so much.
- 12:33Speaker 2: It makes me feel bad for the gift that I

- 12:39Speaker 2: You know.
- 12:39Speaker 3: He gave me a.

- 12:55Speaker 5: You're gonna love the inscription. That's all I gotta say.
- 12:57Speaker 2: And then uh, imag imagin and Willy what is called Austin.
- 13:04Speaker 3: What is it? Immageen and Willie.
- 13:06Speaker 2: It's like a like a clothing company. I got him
- 13:09Speaker 2: like a hat and a shirt from there.
- 13:11Speaker 3: Yeah that's nice. I mean the Emage jersey is way cooler.
- 13:15Speaker 6: But yeah, I was gonna say I could try to
- 13:16Speaker 6: get his signed by he goes to Dallas.
- 13:21Speaker 2: All right, So I'll leave this up here. We can

- 14:24Speaker 3: I just got to get rid of it, and he's
- 14:25Speaker 3: not selling it really like people getting waynet just a
- 14:29Speaker 3: random stuff. All right, Let's go.
- 14:35Speaker 2: Over now to our interview with new Stanford head football
- 14:38Speaker 2: coach t Vita Pritchard. He comes over from the Commanders,
- 14:41Speaker 2: where he spent the last few seasons as their quarterbacks coach.
- 14:43Speaker 2: But really he's a Stanford guy. He's a former Stanford quarterback.
- 14:48Speaker 2: Big upset against USC once when they were like forty
- 14:51Speaker 2: point underdogs. It's a massive game, but we talk about that.
- 14:54Speaker 2: He's a Stanford guy through and through here he is.
- 14:57Speaker 2: I really liked him. Coach ta Vita Pritchard, coach are
- 15:01Speaker 2: you underwater right now? I gotta imagine the first couple
- 15:02Speaker 2: of weeks is just all relationships and saying hi.
- 15:05Speaker 7: Right, there's a lot of relationships, a lot of kind
- 15:07Speaker 7: of reinserting back into the matrix. But it has been
- 15:11Speaker 7: fun because this is home and it's been exciting to
- 15:14Speaker 7: get back here.
- 15:15Speaker 2: So I've got to spend a little time with Coach
- 15:17Speaker 2: Wraig and he came on the show and talked with him,
- 15:19Speaker 2: and he was like, I got one year. He was
- 15:21Speaker 2: very he said, I'm here because Andrew. I got one
- 15:24Speaker 2: year and I'm out. And that's such an interesting situation
- 15:27Speaker 2: for you to come in because one nobody left for
- 15:29Speaker 2: a bigger job, which wouldn't have happened there, and then
- 15:31Speaker 2: two nobody got fired. So it's kind of a positive
- 15:34Speaker 2: place to come What has it been like reinserting and
- 15:37Speaker 2: has has he helped it all?
- 15:39Speaker 7: Yeah, you're right, I mean it was and is very
- 15:42Speaker 7: unique in the way that that transition occurred. And I
- 15:46Speaker 7: have not interfaced with him a ton leading up to
- 15:48Speaker 7: this situation. Obviously, I always knew who he was, you know,
- 15:52Speaker 7: through Andrew and then zach Ertz always spoke very highly
- 15:55Speaker 7: of him. But in our increasing interactions. As time is
- 16:00Speaker 7: gone on, uh man, my respect for him has grown
- 16:03Speaker 7: really really quickly, and not just who he is as
- 16:05Speaker 7: a coach, but as a man, as a leader. And
- 16:08Speaker 7: I can't say enough about what he did in this
- 16:10Speaker 7: unique situation, obviously taking over, you know, at a time
- 16:13Speaker 7: in the calendar that was not typical, and to come
- 16:17Speaker 7: in here like the day before springball, uh and and
- 16:20Speaker 7: and kind of be able to do what he did,
- 16:23Speaker 7: and and and and instill a culture and and start
- 16:26Speaker 7: building for the future, even though he knew that it
- 16:28Speaker 7: was that it was a kind of a one year
- 16:30Speaker 7: or one season shepherding uh during this time, I can't
- 16:33Speaker 7: say enough about the groundwork that was laid with the staff,
- 16:37Speaker 7: with the with the players here and the culture going forward.
- 16:40Speaker 7: So I would say, you know, Frank Reich is a
- 16:42Speaker 7: is a Stanford man forever and always.
- 16:44Speaker 2: This is gonna be such a corny question, but since
- 16:46Speaker 2: you're a Stanford guy, to come and have the office,
- 16:49Speaker 2: was it a moment where you're like, this is now
- 16:50Speaker 2: my office?
- 16:53Speaker 7: I would say it was less of that and more
- 16:56Speaker 7: trying to make sure I didn't walk in the other
- 16:57Speaker 7: offices that I've that I've occupied over my time here,
- 17:00Speaker 7: because there's probably around five or six. So it was
- 17:04Speaker 7: it was more of that than it was the awe
- 17:06Speaker 7: of being in this office. It was more like op
- 17:08Speaker 7: almost walked into that office because muscle memory told me
- 17:11Speaker 7: to do.
- 17:11Speaker 4: So.
- 17:11Speaker 2: Yeah, when we moved buildings, I drove to the wrong
- 17:14Speaker 2: building a couple of times because I had done it
- 17:16Speaker 2: so many times. He's you're just sitting down. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 17:19Speaker 2: So you mentioned culture and that I think that word's
- 17:21Speaker 2: thrown around a lot. But how how do you start
- 17:25Speaker 2: changing culture? What are the first steps when you're gonna
- 17:27Speaker 2: do something that's so macro. Obviously it takes micro to
- 17:30Speaker 2: make macro, what do you start doing?
- 17:32Speaker 4: Yeah? That's that's it's it's it is the question. It
- 17:36Speaker 4: is the question.
- 17:37Speaker 7: As you come in here and you talk about installing
- 17:40Speaker 7: a culture, the first thing is the people, right because
- 17:42Speaker 7: culture is just a shared set of values between people
- 17:45Speaker 7: in a group and a and an organization and a team.
- 17:48Speaker 7: And so I think the first thing is getting the
- 17:49Speaker 7: right people here. You know, I'm working hard right now
- 17:52Speaker 7: to identify and hire a staff and put a staff together,
- 17:57Speaker 7: and so I think it's about bringing people here who
- 17:59Speaker 7: are a fit and obviously fit can be interpreted in
- 18:02Speaker 7: a lot of different ways. But they first have to
- 18:04Speaker 7: understand what our vision is going forward and and and
- 18:08Speaker 7: kind of who we're going to be, what we're going
- 18:10Speaker 7: to be about. And then they have to be a
- 18:12Speaker 7: fit for Stanford, you know, and this is a unique place.
- 18:14Speaker 7: It's a special place. It's a place that I know
- 18:16Speaker 7: and I love very very very much. And and so
- 18:20Speaker 7: they have to understand not that they have to have
- 18:21Speaker 7: even a history with Stanford, but there are certain things
- 18:24Speaker 7: that they have to understand are unique to this place,
- 18:26Speaker 7: and that there are things that we're not just gonna
- 18:28Speaker 7: put up with, but we're actually going to lean into.
- 18:30Speaker 7: You know, when you talk about the way that you
- 18:32Speaker 7: have to recruit here, some people can see that as
- 18:34Speaker 7: a negative. I see it as a superpower, right, and
- 18:37Speaker 7: something that that allows us to identify the people who
- 18:41Speaker 7: belong here and then bring them here and develop them.
- 18:43Speaker 7: So that's the first thing, is bringing the people here,
- 18:46Speaker 7: and then it's and then it's really deciding and defining
- 18:49Speaker 7: what the culture is. And that's not just a me thing,
- 18:51Speaker 7: right this, this this whole thing is not about me.
- 18:54Speaker 7: It's about myself, and Andrew and Sam Fisher and the
- 18:57Speaker 7: other folks in this building, really finding hey, what is
- 19:00Speaker 7: going to what is going to set us apart, and
- 19:02Speaker 7: what's going to make us the best program we can be.
- 19:04Speaker 7: And then once that's done, it's it's reinforcing that every day.
- 19:07Speaker 7: And I think that's the biggest thing is you get
- 19:09Speaker 7: a culture off the ground. It's making it very clear
- 19:11Speaker 7: what it is, and then it's reinforcing it. It's repeating
- 19:14Speaker 7: it so that so that that thing can be seen
- 19:16Speaker 7: and reinforcing it's catching people doing it right, right. I
- 19:19Speaker 7: mean we're going to talk about competition. That's going to
- 19:21Speaker 7: be core to our culture, right. I want to be
- 19:23Speaker 7: able to catch people right. So it's walking out to
- 19:25Speaker 7: the practice field when I can and go watching you know,
- 19:28Speaker 7: workouts and saying and saying, hey, you guys do a
- 19:31Speaker 7: great job competing, you know. So it's just reinforcing those things.
- 19:34Speaker 7: It's it's finding those and then it's being honest and
- 19:36Speaker 7: telling the truth when it's when we're falling short of
- 19:39Speaker 7: that mark, right, whether it's myself or anybody else, Like hey,
- 19:42Speaker 7: when you're instill in culture, it's really about making sure
- 19:44Speaker 7: that you're upholding those things in a really really strong
- 19:47Speaker 7: manner from day one.
- 19:48Speaker 2: So I know clark Ley, who coaches Vanderbilt here because
- 19:51Speaker 2: we live and we've done some stuff together and they
- 19:53Speaker 2: have a similar, i won't even say issue, but a
- 19:57Speaker 2: similar circumstance to where they have to recruit a different
- 20:00Speaker 2: way And are there guys that you will see and man,
- 20:04Speaker 2: I'd really love to have them, but if it's grades
- 20:06Speaker 2: or that you can't take because of what the what
- 20:09Speaker 2: Stanford demands out of their student athlete.
- 20:12Speaker 4: Yeah, you know what I mean.
- 20:13Speaker 7: It's it's what you find here is there is a
- 20:16Speaker 7: filtering process, right and one that honestly, you know, I
- 20:19Speaker 7: mentioned it's a superpower of this place because it's it's
- 20:24Speaker 7: one of those.
- 20:24Speaker 4: Things where I don't look at guys and say, oh, man,
- 20:26Speaker 4: I can't recruit them. Our recruiting department does.
- 20:29Speaker 7: It does a great job of you know, those those
- 20:31Speaker 7: players usually don't even come across my desk, right And
- 20:34Speaker 7: and I'm saying my desk right now in this role,
- 20:36Speaker 7: but even even going back to when I was here before, right,
- 20:39Speaker 7: you really kind of what you what you don't see,
- 20:41Speaker 7: you're not you're not reacting to you know.
- 20:43Speaker 4: So it's like, I know the guys that we can recruit.
- 20:46Speaker 7: I know that crop of people that we are looking at,
- 20:49Speaker 7: the what we are evaluating and getting to know, and
- 20:52Speaker 7: so it's it's way more leaning into man, who who
- 20:54Speaker 7: can be here?
- 20:55Speaker 4: Right?
- 20:55Speaker 7: Who are those folks that we're looking for and identifying?
- 20:58Speaker 7: Because when you when you do cut that down, it
- 21:00Speaker 7: allows us to be a lot more specific and efficient
- 21:03Speaker 7: and effective, right in being able to focus on a smaller.
- 21:07Speaker 4: Group from day one.
- 21:08Speaker 2: Are you going to call plays?
- 21:09Speaker 7: I came in here guns of blazing that I was
- 21:10Speaker 7: going to call plays, and I'm now in a space
- 21:13Speaker 7: where I want to stay open. I want to stay open.
- 21:16Speaker 7: I will be involved in the offense. That's something that
- 21:19Speaker 7: we're working through right now, and I'm looking forward to
- 21:22Speaker 7: putting it together, this collection of people that's going to
- 21:25Speaker 7: come in here, both on the offensive side and the
- 21:27Speaker 7: defensive side. But I have walked back from that stance
- 21:30Speaker 7: a little bit, just knowing that, like, I want to
- 21:33Speaker 7: get the best people here, and I don't want to
- 21:34Speaker 7: limit me.
- 21:35Speaker 4: I don't want to limit us.
- 21:36Speaker 7: I don't want to limit this program because I actually
- 21:39Speaker 7: want to get the best and best fit people for
- 21:42Speaker 7: this place.
- 21:42Speaker 2: How do you feel about non conference games?
- 21:44Speaker 4: I'm still figuring that out.
- 21:45Speaker 7: Man, I'm still figuring that out, you know, just like
- 21:48Speaker 7: just like being in I mean, you ask non conference,
- 21:50Speaker 7: but I'm coming here, you know, to a brand new conference.
- 21:53Speaker 7: Then I left, and so I'm wrapping my head around that.
- 21:56Speaker 7: I'm wrapping my head around non conference games and all
- 21:58Speaker 7: to travel with conference, and so I'm still you know,
- 22:01Speaker 7: it's fun. It's fun to kind of reinsert here and
- 22:04Speaker 7: and kind of catch up, so to speak, right because
- 22:06Speaker 7: I'm both catching up on things that were familiar to
- 22:08Speaker 7: me and then I'm catching up in a sense that like,
- 22:10Speaker 7: oh man, this has changed since I've been gone, you know.
- 22:13Speaker 7: So uh, you know, when it comes to non conference,
- 22:15Speaker 7: I'm excited to play the best around the country, you know.
- 22:18Speaker 7: I mean I think that's something that you know, when
- 22:20Speaker 7: I was here before, you know, I have great memories obviously,
- 22:23Speaker 7: not Notre Dame is a is a non conference that
- 22:25Speaker 7: we play every year that has always been a really
- 22:28Speaker 7: good matchup for us, and and one that you know,
- 22:31Speaker 7: has a great history. And I remember playing in that game,
- 22:33Speaker 7: I remember coaching in that game, and we had some
- 22:36Speaker 7: great battles and I look forward to that one. And
- 22:38Speaker 7: then I think we've done a good job of scheduling.
- 22:41Speaker 7: You know, schools that you know are challenging to us
- 22:44Speaker 7: and that we have that we have great games against.
- 22:46Speaker 7: So I'm looking forward to kind of working with Andrew
- 22:48Speaker 7: and getting caught up on.
- 22:49Speaker 4: A lot of that stuff.
- 22:49Speaker 2: Yeah. I wouldn't sedule a single heart team non conference,
- 22:51Speaker 2: we were seeing it. I would play all high schools, Coach,
- 22:54Speaker 2: I would just go play high schools in California. I
- 22:57Speaker 2: wouldn't travel because you guys are traveling all across the
- 22:59Speaker 2: freaking and you're playing nine conference games next year, You're
- 23:03Speaker 2: having to go to Virginia tehigh schools.
- 23:04Speaker 4: What high school did you go to?
- 23:05Speaker 2: Well, I didn't go, and one to California. I'm from Arkansas.
- 23:08Speaker 2: But I'm just saying all I would play are high
- 23:09Speaker 2: schools in California. So you don't you don't lose THATAK Academy.
- 23:14Speaker 4: Yeah, maybe we can get some high schools on this.
- 23:16Speaker 2: How do you know Pulaski Academy?
- 23:18Speaker 3: Oh?
- 23:18Speaker 4: Man, I've been recruiting for a long time.
- 23:20Speaker 7: I can name the most random high schools from the
- 23:22Speaker 7: most random places.
- 23:23Speaker 2: Never has a coach mentioned PA in the middle of
- 23:26Speaker 2: an interview like that.
- 23:27Speaker 4: Oh, I've been there. Man, I've been there.
- 23:29Speaker 2: Come on, hey, why did you go to Stanford?
- 23:31Speaker 4: You know what.
- 23:32Speaker 7: I grew up in a house my dad played at
- 23:35Speaker 7: Washington State University. My parents met there. My uncle was
- 23:38Speaker 7: Jack Thompson to Throwing, someone who played at Washington State.
- 23:40Speaker 7: So I grew up thinking I'm going to Washington State,
- 23:43Speaker 7: like this is this is.
- 23:44Speaker 4: In the cards.
- 23:45Speaker 7: I'm gonna work hard to be a college football player
- 23:47Speaker 7: and go play in the NFL, but I'm gonna go
- 23:48Speaker 7: to Washington State. Early in the recruiting process, right back
- 23:52Speaker 7: in the old Pack ten, you're basically if you were
- 23:54Speaker 7: a West Coast quarterback, you had to be the top
- 23:56Speaker 7: ten so you can be a Pac ten quarterback. They
- 23:59Speaker 7: took a quarter back early in that cycle, and it
- 24:02Speaker 7: kind of rocked my world. I was kind of like, wait,
- 24:03Speaker 7: I was supposed to go to Washington State, you know,
- 24:06Speaker 7: And I'm not joking. The only thing I knew about
- 24:09Speaker 7: Stanford when that happened was that they played Washington State.
- 24:12Speaker 7: I was like, I think I know their colors. I
- 24:14Speaker 7: couldn't even tell you where it was, but that's the
- 24:16Speaker 7: extent of what I knew about Stanford. Obviously, this was
- 24:18Speaker 7: a different time, right before social media, so like, you
- 24:21Speaker 7: know that that really didn't reach me for whatever reason
- 24:24Speaker 7: about like what Stanford was, about what the brand was,
- 24:27Speaker 7: and it just so happened. We had a connection to
- 24:29Speaker 7: the staff and I got invited to come to a
- 24:30Speaker 7: camp here to try to earn a scholarship. And I
- 24:33Speaker 7: remember walking on campus for the first time and I
- 24:36Speaker 7: actually saw the pool complex and I saw from a distance,
- 24:39Speaker 7: which doesn't excuse this what story I'm about to tell,
- 24:42Speaker 7: but I looked at it.
- 24:42Speaker 4: I was like, Wow, the football stadium. That's incredible.
- 24:45Speaker 7: And as we get closer're like, no, coach, that's the
- 24:47Speaker 7: that's the pool. And I was like, oh, that's the pool.
- 24:50Speaker 7: And it just spoke to just like how incredible this
- 24:54Speaker 7: this campus is and the buildings and all that. But
- 24:57Speaker 7: what I also didn't know was like the campus, the
- 25:00Speaker 7: buildings and the setting are not even the half of it, right,
- 25:03Speaker 7: because you get to know the people and you get
- 25:05Speaker 7: to know what they're about, how how committed they are
- 25:08Speaker 7: and how collaborative they are, and they're about excellence and
- 25:11Speaker 7: they're about cohesion, and its just like the more I
- 25:14Speaker 7: learned about this place, I was like, man, this is
- 25:16Speaker 7: these are my kind of people. And luckily I did
- 25:19Speaker 7: well enough in that camp I earned a scholarship. I
- 25:21Speaker 7: committed shortly after I got into school. Shortly after that.
- 25:24Speaker 7: I'll never forget that phone call. I was at our
- 25:26Speaker 7: high school stadium watching my sister play soccer, and we
- 25:29Speaker 7: got the call, and I remember, I remember that feeling.
- 25:31Speaker 7: I remember the reaction of getting accepted in the school.
- 25:34Speaker 7: And it's just like everything has led to, uh, you know,
- 25:37Speaker 7: being here and being a part of this community, and
- 25:39Speaker 7: and and it is it is, it is. It's made
- 25:43Speaker 7: me as a person like I am a product of
- 25:44Speaker 7: this place in so many ways. And I'm so grateful
- 25:47Speaker 7: for my experience here. And now I'm excited to be
- 25:49Speaker 7: able to give back and serve these players and and
- 25:52Speaker 7: and and hope to create an equally great experience for them.
- 25:56Speaker 2: The continuity that is there with and you mentioned Andrew Locke,
- 25:59Speaker 2: did that help keep players from jumping in the portal
- 26:01Speaker 2: that he could already establish relationships for sure?
- 26:04Speaker 7: And Andrew's special Andrew special like like this, this is
- 26:07Speaker 7: this is not only was it the fact that his
- 26:10Speaker 7: role was already filled and in place, but it's the
- 26:12Speaker 7: fact that it's him right, He has an extreme passion
- 26:15Speaker 7: for this place. He has an extreme passion period and
- 26:18Speaker 7: and he's a dude. He's a dude. Like people understand that, right,
- 26:22Speaker 7: and they know what he's about. And Andrew could be
- 26:25Speaker 7: doing anything he wants, right, But again, he and I
- 26:27Speaker 7: are similar in that, like we are here in service
- 26:30Speaker 7: of this place and the experience of our student athletes.
- 26:33Speaker 7: And that's and that's something that's real. And I know
- 26:35Speaker 7: our students, I know our football players feel that, right.
- 26:38Speaker 7: I know our community feels that how invested he is
- 26:41Speaker 7: in this place. And so that's a big part of
- 26:42Speaker 7: the reason that that guys are still here is they
- 26:44Speaker 7: knew that with his support, right, and the and and
- 26:48Speaker 7: the and his vision for this, that we were gonna
- 26:51Speaker 7: we were going to be going in the direction and
- 26:53Speaker 7: they wanted to be a part of it.
- 26:54Speaker 2: Got three final questions, And this one may be done
- 26:56Speaker 2: because you could have ten times. But I'm going to
- 26:58Speaker 2: ask you because I.
- 26:59Speaker 4: Got a question.
- 26:59Speaker 2: Yeah it is because if you like, no, no, John Elway,
- 27:02Speaker 2: that's a dumb question. But have you got to spend
- 27:04Speaker 2: a time with John Alway?
- 27:06Speaker 4: You know what I've met John over the years.
- 27:08Speaker 7: I've gotten to spend a little bit of time with him,
- 27:09Speaker 7: but not it was not it's not been extensive when
- 27:11Speaker 7: you were.
- 27:12Speaker 2: Playing quarterback there. Would you watch tape back of how
- 27:14Speaker 2: dominant John Elway was?
- 27:16Speaker 3: Oh?
- 27:16Speaker 7: Yeah, for sure. I mean I think I think it's
- 27:18Speaker 7: a it's a core tenet of being a quarterback that
- 27:20Speaker 7: you just you watch guys. You love to watch guys
- 27:23Speaker 7: and kind of see parts of their game that maybe
- 27:24Speaker 7: you see in yourself or or or aspirationally right, like,
- 27:28Speaker 7: oh man, I'd love to be able to do it
- 27:29Speaker 7: like that. So you really study, and he was certainly
- 27:31Speaker 7: one you study because he's one of the all time greats.
- 27:33Speaker 2: All right, two questions left. Whenever you take a job
- 27:36Speaker 2: and this is your old school, so he probably did
- 27:38Speaker 2: have some gear. Is there like a like a box
- 27:41Speaker 2: that's like this is going to cover you for the
- 27:43Speaker 2: first two weeks, and it's just all it's the hats,
- 27:46Speaker 2: it's the shirts, it's everything you're gonna need.
- 27:48Speaker 4: Absolutely, I had, I had.
- 27:50Speaker 7: You know what's funny is I have a lot of
- 27:52Speaker 7: friends in the profession, and they a lot of them
- 27:54Speaker 7: have rules because you know they'll have made a number
- 27:57Speaker 7: of moves and going to different teams in France into
- 28:01Speaker 7: a lot of guys who have been in this coaching
- 28:02Speaker 7: world for a long time. They say, okay, hey, I'm
- 28:04Speaker 7: going to keep two things from my last job, and
- 28:08Speaker 7: so I can get rid of the rest give it away,
- 28:09Speaker 7: and then and then you know, I'm may get a
- 28:11Speaker 7: new gear at my new place. Well, obviously my journey's
- 28:13Speaker 7: been a little bit different, right, I mean, I played it.
- 28:15Speaker 7: I started at Stanford as in two thousand and five
- 28:17Speaker 7: as a freshman football player, and I was there throughout
- 28:21Speaker 7: continuously until twenty twenty two. So I accrued and acquired
- 28:25Speaker 7: a lot of gear over my time. Now I will
- 28:27Speaker 7: also say this with ten siblings and nieces and nephews
- 28:30Speaker 7: and my mom and dad and uncles. Like my closet
- 28:34Speaker 7: was raided early and often, so that was spread out,
- 28:37Speaker 7: but I still had a lot of gear, and luckily
- 28:39Speaker 7: with it, you know, me being alum, even when I
- 28:41Speaker 7: moved on from this place, Originally I was like, well,
- 28:44Speaker 7: I'm not going to keep two things. Like I still
- 28:45Speaker 7: got to represent the squad and be able to, especially
- 28:48Speaker 7: on the East coast, you know, kind of spread the
- 28:50Speaker 7: gospel of Stanford. So luckily I held onto a lot
- 28:53Speaker 7: of stuff. I believe my family did too, so we
- 28:56Speaker 7: weren't too far behind.
- 28:57Speaker 2: Last question, And I want to talk about Jay and
- 28:59Speaker 2: Dan Niels for a second, but also how that correlates
- 29:02Speaker 2: with what you're doing now. Obviously you coach Jane Daniels
- 29:05Speaker 2: one Rookie of the Year, but what we would hear
- 29:07Speaker 2: and what we'd read is all of like the tech
- 29:08Speaker 2: you would use the glasses to see the field. Are
- 29:11Speaker 2: you implementing that at Stanford at all?
- 29:13Speaker 7: Yeah, we're still looking at like the technology that we're
- 29:16Speaker 7: going to use. Obviously we're still we're we're not at
- 29:18Speaker 7: that point yet where we're looking at some of those things,
- 29:22Speaker 7: but you know, they they do a great job, like
- 29:24Speaker 7: the like the group that we worked with, the VR
- 29:27Speaker 7: company that we worked with with Jayden, it is it's
- 29:30Speaker 7: a great tool.
- 29:31Speaker 4: But here's what I.
- 29:31Speaker 7: Would say working with Jadan Daniels, working with Marcus Mariotah,
- 29:37Speaker 7: Sam Hartman, Josh Johnson this year, like Jayden works man
- 29:41Speaker 7: so like whether it's the whether it's the VR goggles
- 29:44Speaker 7: or walkthroughs or watching traditional film like he Jayden and
- 29:50Speaker 7: market like those guys make those tools, you know what
- 29:52Speaker 7: I'm saying, Like, like those tools are only as useful
- 29:55Speaker 7: as the user and the person who's utilizing them. So
- 29:59Speaker 7: it's really what's what I do want to separate. It's
- 30:01Speaker 7: like that is a powerful tool and one that's really
- 30:03Speaker 7: really cool, and if you believe in it and you
- 30:05Speaker 7: use it, it can be super helpful and really take
- 30:07Speaker 7: your game to the next level. But so much of
- 30:10Speaker 7: it was about the people, and like getting to work
- 30:12Speaker 7: with Jayden has really affected my career. Getting to work
- 30:15Speaker 7: with Marcus has really affected my career because those guys,
- 30:17Speaker 7: the way that they approach the game, the passion they
- 30:20Speaker 7: have for learning, the passion they have for leadership and teamwork.
- 30:24Speaker 7: Like I can't say enough about my time in that
- 30:26Speaker 7: room with those guys.
- 30:28Speaker 2: Coach, I really appreciate the time. I know you're underwater.
- 30:31Speaker 2: You know, we got a couple couple guys've been talking
- 30:32Speaker 2: with that got new jobs, and so they all say
- 30:34Speaker 2: the same thing, like they have five hundred text messages
- 30:36Speaker 2: and so to cut out fifteen twenty minutes, I really
- 30:39Speaker 2: appreciate it. Hope you have a great offseason and good
- 30:41Speaker 2: luck next season.
- 30:41Speaker 4: Coach, appreciate it, Bobby, have a good one man Sey coach.
- 30:49Speaker 2: All right, that's it for us. We just want to
- 30:51Speaker 2: put up some new content. And talk to coach, which
- 30:54Speaker 2: was super cool for him to come on. Hope everybody
- 30:56Speaker 2: has a wonderful holiday too, man, and yeah, we'll see
- 31:00Speaker 2: you guys on the other side. I don't I don't
- 31:04Speaker 2: think we're gonna do any episodes between then because we'll
- 31:06Speaker 2: all be separate. Who knows, like a pop into the
- 31:08Speaker 2: room and maybe give a little analysis. I doubt it,
- 31:12Speaker 2: or you and I can just hop together at the
- 31:14Speaker 2: house at some point. Do you know how to even
- 31:16Speaker 2: load a podcast?
- 31:17Speaker 3: We can figure it out.
- 31:18Speaker 2: No, we can't.
- 31:20Speaker 3: We can just look for the upload button.
- 31:22Speaker 2: I'll end up loading it up onto Amy. Yeah, Caroline
- 31:28Speaker 2: Hobby's got a sports podcast up on her feed. Thank
- 31:31Speaker 2: you guys, Hope you have a great holiday. We will
- 31:32Speaker 2: see you at some point soon. Bye, everybody.
