Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Andrew Dickens: Let's stop with the announcement of announcements
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Okay, So I'm a bit of a policy wonk. I
- 0:02Speaker 1: like policy. I don't care which party it is. If
- 0:04Speaker 1: they come up with a policy, I like to break
- 0:06Speaker 1: it down and see if it makes sense. And I'll
- 0:07Speaker 1: support any policy from anybody if it's a good one.
- 0:11Speaker 1: I also know that politicians are addicted to announcements and
- 0:14Speaker 1: attention at media coverage, which means they sometimes say the
- 0:17Speaker 1: very first thing in their heads that sounds like it
- 0:19Speaker 1: might get votes, no matter if it's deliverable or not.
- 0:22Speaker 1: Now we'll all remember that Labor had a very bad
- 0:25Speaker 1: case of it last term. Phill Twiford in his one
- 0:27Speaker 1: hundred thousand ki We Build fantasy Michael wood I thought
- 0:31Speaker 1: was the absolute champion based on five minutes on the
- 0:33Speaker 1: back of an envelope. He announced a nearly nine hundred
- 0:35Speaker 1: million dollar bike bridge and then face with a backlash
- 0:39Speaker 1: from dominion row businesses. He then casually stuck a light
- 0:42Speaker 1: rail system underground, tripling the price to an unaffordable eighteen
- 0:46Speaker 1: billion dollars. Now it seems to me that the National
- 0:50Speaker 1: Led Coalition has a case of the same disease. Paul
- 0:53Speaker 1: Goldsmith has it bad. This week he announced to change
- 0:57Speaker 1: to citizens' arrest rules, but had no idea of what
- 1:00Speaker 1: the changes are going to be. The policy has been
- 1:02Speaker 1: greeted with confusion and a mixed reaction. It's an idea
- 1:06Speaker 1: that needs a lot more work. That's what he was announcing.
- 1:08Speaker 1: In fact, he was doing a classic Labor Party announcement
- 1:11Speaker 1: of an announcement. But the king of wishful thinking in
- 1:14Speaker 1: the coalition is the Prince of the Province's Shane Jones.
- 1:18Speaker 1: This week he proposed a special economic zone for mars
- 1:21Speaker 1: and Point, begging the question why not turn the whole
- 1:24Speaker 1: country into a special economic zone? Shane? The whole place
- 1:27Speaker 1: needs a hand. And then he proposed repairing Marsden Point refinery,
- 1:31Speaker 1: which is a fanciful idea. It was shot down in
- 1:35Speaker 1: hours as they realized the enormous cost of nearly eight
- 1:38Speaker 1: billion dollars. Didn't Shane already know that? And the reason
- 1:43Speaker 1: why no government has repaired the refinery ever since it
- 1:46Speaker 1: was sold forty years ago is because it's impossible and expensive.
- 1:51Speaker 1: Did Shane not know that? But he said it anyway.
- 1:53Speaker 1: And the thing I think about leadership is that you
- 1:56Speaker 1: need to make adult decisions and proposals, and if you're
- 1:58Speaker 1: a cabinet Minister, you can't just let the first Walter
- 2:00Speaker 1: Mitty like Thoorpe bubble pop out of your mouth when
- 2:03Speaker 1: you know that there's nothing there now. That is the
- 2:05Speaker 1: lesson labor should have learned from last term, and hopefully
- 2:09Speaker 1: the government we have right now figures it out as
- 2:12Speaker 1: well and figures it out soon. For more from Early
