Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Ryan Bridge: Is the patch ban going to solve the underlaying causes of gang crime?
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Everyone hates gangs unless you're in them. You hate them
- 0:02Speaker 1: because they intimidate, they cause misery, they beat their wives,
- 0:08Speaker 1: they do all sorts of awful things. But I just
- 0:11Speaker 1: worry that the gang patch ban in and of itself,
- 0:16Speaker 1: it's not really going to solve the underlying causes of it,
- 0:19Speaker 1: is it? And what I worry about is the waste
- 0:22Speaker 1: that could go into this, the waste of time, police energy,
- 0:26Speaker 1: and resources running after every time Betty sees a gang patch,
- 0:30Speaker 1: she rings in one one one, Oh, I've seen the
- 0:32Speaker 1: macro mob, which is fine because I know it's intimidating.
- 0:35Speaker 1: I'm not just I'm not being disparaging of Betty. However,
- 0:40Speaker 1: that is going to tie up some police time which
- 0:42Speaker 1: could be better spent solving an actual crime. The other
- 0:46Speaker 1: problem here is the design of the insignia the gang patch.
- 0:52Speaker 1: So at the moment the police know the designs of
- 0:54Speaker 1: each of the patches or mobs patches, what they're apparently
- 0:58Speaker 1: doing is going down through and making subtle changes, adding
- 1:02Speaker 1: words like mani fenua or changing this logo or that logo.
- 1:06Speaker 1: So sure, you will take the patch, you will collect
- 1:09Speaker 1: it as evidence, you will take it to court, and
- 1:12Speaker 1: the lawyers will argue it's different. I mean, where are
- 1:16Speaker 1: we now with our legal bills and our legal aid bills,
- 1:19Speaker 1: and what have we actually achieved in doing that? Have
- 1:23Speaker 1: we reduced crime or have we increased the cost of
- 1:27Speaker 1: administering administering a fashion police policy. You know, that's my
- 1:34Speaker 1: only concern. For more from Early Edition with Ryan Bridge.
