Latest / Foul Territory / Can the Cubs charge back v. Brewers?
Transcript
- 0:03Speaker 1: Hey, we've got North Side Territory host and the athletics
- 0:06Speaker 1: Patrick Mooney joining us right now to talk about the
- 0:09Speaker 1: Chicago Cubs trailing to nothing. Well, that's what Philly fans do.
- 0:14Speaker 1: Will Cubs fans do that? If they're in trouble in
- 0:17Speaker 1: this Game three against the Brewers? How do they fix this? Patrick?
- 0:20Speaker 1: I want to start with something like more glass half full,
- 0:22Speaker 1: Like how do the Cubs shock the world and come back?
- 0:28Speaker 2: I have no idea.
- 0:29Speaker 3: I have a hard time coming on this show and
- 0:32Speaker 3: presenting like a credible path forward, Like, yeah, it's professional sports,
- 0:37Speaker 3: it's unscripted.
- 0:38Speaker 2: Crazy things happen.
- 0:40Speaker 3: But sid If Sharman and I were talking about this
- 0:43Speaker 3: on North Side Territory, Like, you go back to the
- 0:46Speaker 3: twenty sixteen World Series, the Cubs are down three to one.
- 0:48Speaker 3: You got John Lester pitching Game five with a Roldis
- 0:54Speaker 3: Chapman waiting to do, you know, superhuman things out of
- 0:57Speaker 3: the bullpen.
- 0:58Speaker 2: Then you have a rating it's not.
- 1:00Speaker 3: Young Award winner and Jake Arieta lined up for Game six,
- 1:04Speaker 3: and then the Major League eer A leader that year,
- 1:08Speaker 3: Kyle Hendricks awaiting Game seven, and the Cubs pitching at
- 1:15Speaker 3: this point feels almost totally depleted. You saw it in
- 1:20Speaker 3: Matthew Boyd going on three days rest, showed it in
- 1:24Speaker 3: Minaga clearly is off his game, giving.
- 1:27Speaker 2: Up way too many home runs.
- 1:31Speaker 3: Kate Horton is supposed to throw off a mound today
- 1:34Speaker 3: at Wrigley Field. They'll see if they can try and
- 1:36Speaker 3: push him, if they somehow find a way to advance.
- 1:39Speaker 2: But I don't know.
- 1:41Speaker 3: Brewers just totally outplayed the Cubs in every phase of
- 1:45Speaker 3: the game in Milwaukee.
- 1:47Speaker 4: Okay, well that's okay. They don't need to pitch, they
- 1:50Speaker 4: just need to score.
- 1:53Speaker 2: Too. Yeah, right, Can they out hit?
- 1:55Speaker 4: Can they out hit this? Milwaukee's as as I think
- 1:59Speaker 4: somebody said on one show this week, hitting Milwaukee lineup
- 2:04Speaker 4: that led the league and run scored.
- 2:10Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, I just watching those games like where
- 2:13Speaker 3: like the Brewers just have the best players on the field,
- 2:16Speaker 3: the most dynamic pitchers on the mouth.
- 2:19Speaker 2: And that's what the Brewers do, right. They make teams look.
- 2:22Speaker 3: Bad, whether it's just their style of play, they're swinging
- 2:26Speaker 3: miss stuff. I think even you see it in you know,
- 2:29Speaker 3: players coming from other organizations like Andrew Vaughan or Quinn Priester,
- 2:33Speaker 3: and all of a sudden something clicks and they're awesome.
- 2:40Speaker 3: I think you have fans and other small markets being like, well,
- 2:43Speaker 3: if the Brewers can do that, why can't.
- 2:44Speaker 2: Our team do that?
- 2:45Speaker 3: And even in Chicago, I think there is some frustration
- 2:51Speaker 3: of like the payroll the Cubs have, it should be higher,
- 2:58Speaker 3: but it's still way more in the in the Brewers,
- 3:01Speaker 3: and there still is this huge gap. And then you
- 3:04Speaker 3: have obviously Craig Counsel leaving Milwaukee and the Brewers get better.
- 3:09Speaker 2: You have players like that.
- 3:11Speaker 3: And the Bruises have this amazing ability to sort of
- 3:14Speaker 3: like get rid of players at the right time and
- 3:16Speaker 3: kind of let someone else deal with the huge frage
- 3:19Speaker 3: and contract with the player to clients.
- 3:20Speaker 2: Just just all of that.
- 3:25Speaker 3: Gives it makes it hard for me to imagine the
- 3:27Speaker 3: scenario in which the Cups advance.
- 3:30Speaker 2: Here.
- 3:32Speaker 5: I want to talk about Jemison tie On. I mean,
- 3:34Speaker 5: I feel like he's been pretty good. I feel like
- 3:38Speaker 5: as the three guy or whatever you want to call him,
- 3:41Speaker 5: I feel like this is the guy right now that
- 3:43Speaker 5: can kind of kickstart this Cub's team to get gone.
- 3:46Speaker 5: Talk a little about him and how how good he's
- 3:48Speaker 5: been and how they're going to lean on him here
- 3:50Speaker 5: a little bit as they're moving forward.
- 3:53Speaker 3: No, you're right, Sad, I guess I could have started there.
- 3:55Speaker 3: Like Jamison is a really good starting point. He's outside
- 4:00Speaker 3: of Kate Horton was probably their best pitcher towards the
- 4:03Speaker 3: end of the season there as you guys know, just
- 4:06Speaker 3: a terrific teammate, leader by example, a very rational person. Teammates,
- 4:16Speaker 3: you know, just talk about the example. He sets it
- 4:19Speaker 3: in the room. So yeah, you start there. The bullpen, obviously,
- 4:25Speaker 3: with all these days off during the series, should be
- 4:28Speaker 3: pretty well rested, maybe getting back to Wrigley Field, sparks something,
- 4:34Speaker 3: and you know, you've seen these flashes of the club's offense.
- 4:37Speaker 3: That's what made these two games even harder to kind
- 4:41Speaker 3: of comprehend of, Like they landed the first punch in
- 4:44Speaker 3: the first inning, whether it's Michael Bush's lead off home
- 4:47Speaker 3: run or Saeya Suzuki's huge swing. I think it was
- 4:50Speaker 3: maybe sixteen pitches into Game two. But other than that,
- 4:55Speaker 3: it's just been really quiet on the offensive end, and
- 4:59Speaker 3: it's not really an anomaly, like this is an awesome
- 5:02Speaker 3: offense in the first half, and for a variety of reasons,
- 5:04Speaker 3: it just sort of faded in the second half, and
- 5:07Speaker 3: now against a higher level of pitching, when the stakes are.
- 5:10Speaker 2: Even higher, the offense just hasn't come through.
- 5:15Speaker 4: How did the Cubs and the Cubs fans and maybe
- 5:18Speaker 4: even the people on the bench feel about the pitcher
- 5:20Speaker 4: ploy that the Brewers pulled last night with Quinn Priester
- 5:24Speaker 4: and Aaron Ashby going out there and Priester never actually pitching.
- 5:31Speaker 2: Ao Suzuki liked the matchup. I guess I don't like.
- 5:36Speaker 3: That went to me seemed a little bit overthinking it
- 5:39Speaker 3: on the Brewer's end. Obviously it worked out and the
- 5:43Speaker 3: Cubs kind of let them off the hook there. But
- 5:47Speaker 3: it's been kind of funny covering the playoffs here where
- 5:49Speaker 3: it seems like the managers from one night to the
- 5:53Speaker 3: next or one game to the next go from like genius,
- 5:55Speaker 3: idiot genius, like if it works, it was a great call,
- 6:00Speaker 3: and if it doesn't, it was a dumb move.
- 6:04Speaker 4: Tucker, Kyle Tucker, what does what does this version of
- 6:09Speaker 4: Kyle Tucker look like somebody that got rushed back after
- 6:12Speaker 4: an injury? Does it look like the struggling Kyle Tucker
- 6:15Speaker 4: that was pre injury and is their hope that he
- 6:19Speaker 4: can be the aircraft carrier that they brought him in
- 6:22Speaker 4: to be, and he was for two thirds three quarters
- 6:26Speaker 4: of the season.
- 6:27Speaker 2: Yeah, no doubt, I mean, he was that guy. It
- 6:31Speaker 2: is hard to see the Cubs.
- 6:34Speaker 3: Making the playoffs without him, or maybe they squeak in,
- 6:37Speaker 3: but just all the momentum that was created in the
- 6:40Speaker 3: first half really was a huge product of his production,
- 6:46Speaker 3: his presence, his sense of calm, the example he set
- 6:50Speaker 3: in the batter's box.
- 6:52Speaker 2: Is all around play.
- 6:54Speaker 3: And we just have not seen that here really for
- 6:59Speaker 3: a couple months now in Part two due to whatever
- 7:04Speaker 3: happened with his hand, whether it was a subconscious thing
- 7:07Speaker 3: or not of just kind of messing with his mechanics
- 7:11Speaker 3: or just something was slightly off. And then with a
- 7:13Speaker 3: kaff here he's been a dh I don't think there's
- 7:17Speaker 3: any expectation that he's going to play the field this series.
- 7:21Speaker 3: Stay Suzuki has been more than passable in right field,
- 7:25Speaker 3: but obviously that kind of limits you. And I think
- 7:28Speaker 3: part of the appeal of Kyle Tucker was that base running,
- 7:32Speaker 3: that speed, just the all around contributions he could make
- 7:35Speaker 3: to the game.
- 7:35Speaker 2: And right now he is limited.
- 7:39Speaker 3: And you saw in the San Diego series a Cubs
- 7:42Speaker 3: thought he was getting that timing back and was making
- 7:46Speaker 3: good decisions and was kind of just seeing the ball
- 7:50Speaker 3: hitting line drives again. That impact, though, just hasn't been
- 7:54Speaker 3: here against Milwaukee. And obviously the Brewers have a terrific
- 7:57Speaker 3: pitching staff, a very good game planning system, but without
- 8:03Speaker 3: Tucker and when picrow Armstrong struggling, it's just it's just
- 8:08Speaker 3: a thin lineup.

- 9:09Speaker 1: Fox favorites together in one place at the Fox one app.
- 9:14Speaker 4: Is there a giveaway or something at Wrigley Field tomorrow,
- 9:17Speaker 4: because at the end of the Brewers game it wasn't
- 9:20Speaker 4: even over. There was a ton of Cubs fans taking
- 9:23Speaker 4: the quick trip across the bridge. Is there something that
- 9:26Speaker 4: they're rushing too? And does it feel like for Cubs
- 9:30Speaker 4: fans that they've been the bigger brother the older brother,
- 9:35Speaker 4: and little brother is now gotten taller than them. Does
- 9:40Speaker 4: it feel like there's no coming back from this or
- 9:43Speaker 4: does it feel like, in a more of a macro sense,
- 9:47Speaker 4: not just this series, but no coming back from it
- 9:50Speaker 4: and there needs to be wholesale changes in Chicago.
- 9:57Speaker 3: I would guess that Cubs fans are still probably gonna
- 10:00Speaker 3: be skeptical of the Brewers no matter what. Like if
- 10:03Speaker 3: the Brewers get rocked against the Dodgers in the NLCS,
- 10:07Speaker 3: it's kind of like, you know, whatever they played a
- 10:10Speaker 3: week longer but there's no doubt that the Brewers, under
- 10:15Speaker 3: Council's leadership, and you were there, Eric hastened the demise
- 10:18Speaker 3: of the post twenty sixteen Cubs. They were irritating, they
- 10:25Speaker 3: were frustrating. I think Theopsky and Jed Hoyer constantly looked
- 10:29Speaker 3: at their roster, Milwaukee's roster and was like, why is
- 10:33Speaker 3: Craig Counsel ringing more out of their group than we
- 10:37Speaker 3: are out of ours? And you know, it hasn't been
- 10:41Speaker 3: just one person or one player. They've been relentless. And
- 10:45Speaker 3: I asked Jed Hoyr this before the playoffs started towards
- 10:48Speaker 3: end of the season, of like, it does this sort
- 10:51Speaker 3: of take you back to your Al East days when
- 10:53Speaker 3: you're with the Red Sox and the Rays were coming up.
- 10:56Speaker 3: You just kind of have to assume that they're going
- 10:57Speaker 3: to win ninety games a year. And I think that's
- 11:00Speaker 3: kind of the parallel here for the Cubs. And I think,
- 11:05Speaker 3: you know, widespread changes, I don't, I don't think so.
- 11:09Speaker 3: I mean that first half earned Jed Hoyer contracts extension
- 11:12Speaker 3: and sort of solidified the future of this front office.
- 11:16Speaker 3: Craig Council isn't going anywhere, and I think mostly you
- 11:20Speaker 3: look at this Cub's team and I think they've sort
- 11:23Speaker 3: of gotten what they deserve. Do They haven't really overachieved
- 11:28Speaker 3: to a great extent, They certainly haven't underachieved. I think
- 11:30Speaker 3: this is a team built to like make the playoffs
- 11:34Speaker 3: and be back in the mix next year. And then
- 11:36Speaker 3: that's the broader questions are kind of what you're getting
- 11:39Speaker 3: at is, you know, sort of like payroll and the
- 11:43Speaker 3: willingness to kind of go all in for one season.
- 11:46Speaker 3: And obviously this wasn't it. You trade for Kyle Tucker,
- 11:49Speaker 3: but you don't sign Alex Bregman. You upgrade the team
- 11:53Speaker 3: at the trade deadline, but you don't make that one
- 11:56Speaker 3: huge splashy move. And you know they'll whenever this season ends,
- 12:02Speaker 3: they'll do their kind of deep dive. But I don't
- 12:06Speaker 3: expect them to look at this body of work and
- 12:09Speaker 3: be like, we have to make huge changes or totally
- 12:12Speaker 3: overhaul our philosophy right or wrong?
- 12:15Speaker 4: Justin steel still in this rotation. How much does it change?
- 12:20Speaker 4: I know there's what ifs and whatever's, And that's to
- 12:23Speaker 4: me why they didn't go in on a Max Free.
- 12:25Speaker 4: They didn't go in on a Corbyn Burns because they
- 12:29Speaker 4: had Justin Steele, they didn't know they had Kate Horton.
- 12:32Speaker 4: But if Justin Steele is here for this series, does
- 12:37Speaker 4: he make enough of an impact that it could have
- 12:40Speaker 4: changed this series?
- 12:44Speaker 2: Yeah? You know, the Steel injury was so.
- 12:48Speaker 3: Long ago that I think the Cubs moved on pretty quickly.
- 12:51Speaker 3: I think the Horton coming up when Shoda got hurt
- 12:56Speaker 3: was huge. But like, clearly the Cubs are an organization
- 12:59Speaker 3: that's obsessed with pitch depth and they are constantly acquiring it. Uh,
- 13:06Speaker 3: but even that has its limits. And like they went
- 13:09Speaker 3: all out to beat the Padres. They pitched, not flawlessly,
- 13:14Speaker 3: but they pitched at an extremely high level.
- 13:17Speaker 2: I think that took something.
- 13:21Speaker 3: Out of them, and I realized that expectations are lower
- 13:25Speaker 3: for starting pitchers now in the playoffs.
- 13:27Speaker 2: But like, it's just not sustainable.
- 13:29Speaker 3: If you're getting like, you know, two and two thirds innings,
- 13:33Speaker 3: you know, every playoff game, that's just not going to work,
- 13:37Speaker 3: especially when you're facing a team that was coming off
- 13:41Speaker 3: of buy and has Freddy Peralta pitching game one and
- 13:45Speaker 3: lined up if necessary deeper in the series.
- 13:50Speaker 1: Hey, Patrick, if they are able to truck through and
- 13:54Speaker 1: pull off a win or two here, how do you
- 13:57Speaker 1: think the team sets up for these next couple games
- 14:00Speaker 1: right after Game three with ty On if they're able
- 14:03Speaker 1: to pull that off and be priest who never loses.
- 14:05Speaker 1: But if they're able to beat him, then what does
- 14:07Speaker 1: it look like going forward? Because I think we can
- 14:10Speaker 1: all agree at this point the risk to go with
- 14:13Speaker 1: Matt Boyd on the short rest was not the right move.
- 14:19Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, Quinn Priester grew up a Cups fan.
- 14:22Speaker 3: I think he went to some of those twenty sixteen
- 14:24Speaker 3: World Series games, so it'll be fun to see him
- 14:28Speaker 3: pitch in that environment. I think it comes down to here,
- 14:33Speaker 3: like your best players have to be your best players,
- 14:37Speaker 3: and you've seen it with the Brewers. I mean, I mean,
- 14:42Speaker 3: I need to get Wilson Contreras's breakdown of Williams's home
- 14:47Speaker 3: run celebration last night, because that was awesome. I've been
- 14:52Speaker 3: to games that American Family Field maybe it's called Miller
- 14:55Speaker 3: Park back then, but where like Wilson would blow kisses
- 14:58Speaker 3: to the crowd and stuff.
- 14:59Speaker 2: Like that awesome.
- 15:01Speaker 3: So, like, I don't know if if Kyle Tucker hits
- 15:05Speaker 3: a three run home run, if Pekrow Armstrong hits a
- 15:08Speaker 3: three run home run, like it's it's not totally out
- 15:11Speaker 3: of the question.
- 15:12Speaker 2: The Cubs have not. I think their longest losing streak.
- 15:17Speaker 3: Was three games and then they clinched a playoff spot
- 15:20Speaker 3: and went on like a five game losing streak. So
- 15:22Speaker 3: this team has been able to like manage series and
- 15:25Speaker 3: minimize those down periods.
- 15:28Speaker 2: I just think like.
- 15:30Speaker 3: This Brewers team is at another level, and like if
- 15:34Speaker 3: they were wearing Yankees or Dodgers uniforms, like we'd be
- 15:37Speaker 3: talking would have been talking about them in a totally
- 15:39Speaker 3: different context for most of this year.
- 15:44Speaker 1: Last one, here is the specific pitching setup for Games
- 15:47Speaker 1: four and five, just bullpenning chaos.
- 15:53Speaker 3: I mean, that's that's kind of been like that since
- 15:56Speaker 3: first pitch of Game one of this NLDS.
- 15:58Speaker 2: I think you kind of see see where they're at.
- 16:02Speaker 3: Like the comes to their credit have been like so
- 16:05Speaker 3: good at this It's like what Eric was saying earlier
- 16:08Speaker 3: of all right, justin steel all star pitcher goes down
- 16:11Speaker 3: in April, they just keep progressing. Showa goes down, Kate
- 16:16Speaker 3: Horton comes up like they had. Colin Ray was awesome
- 16:22Speaker 3: for them on balance this year, Javer Sad gets hurt
- 16:25Speaker 3: like maybe the first day of spring training or even
- 16:28Speaker 3: before camp officially opens, and you know, they don't really
- 16:32Speaker 3: miss him, but when it's so condensed like this, when
- 16:36Speaker 3: every pitch matters, it just feels like they're pitching plans
- 16:42Speaker 3: are sort.
- 16:43Speaker 2: Of shredded here.
- 16:44Speaker 3: I think it's just try and win Wednesday and then
- 16:48Speaker 3: worry about Thursday immediately after game three, assuming you have
- 16:53Speaker 3: another tomorrow.
- 16:55Speaker 1: Okay, yeah, just thinking even if they're able to slay
- 16:57Speaker 1: the Brewers, and for example, they the Dodgers and they're like,
- 17:01Speaker 1: we're not really sure with half of our starters for
- 17:04Speaker 1: this seven game series, and the Dodgers are like glass now, Snell,
- 17:09Speaker 1: I'm as honey, Okay, so yeah, I mean I get it.
- 17:14Speaker 1: They're they're missing two guys who are top end starters
- 17:16Speaker 1: right now. But that's that's part of the song and
- 17:18Speaker 1: dance here, and while they'll continue to build up pitching depth, well,
- 17:21Speaker 1: we'll see what happens. Patrick. You did your best to
- 17:23Speaker 1: bring a little positivity to the vibes here. But it
- 17:26Speaker 1: will be fun. It'll be a fun, raucous Game three
- 17:29Speaker 1: at Brickley caotalking you of course, we'll listen to all
- 17:31Speaker 1: that you're bringing at the table on North Side Territory too,
- 17:34Speaker 1: but have fun out there.
- 17:35Speaker 2: Thanks, guys appreciate it.
