- 0:59Speaker 5: What's up and welcome to Movie Meltdown.
- 1:00Speaker 6: I am Brian and I'm Marlena and yeah that's it.
- 1:04Speaker 5: We'll be doing things a little different this week. Um,
- 1:07Speaker 5: we are, yeah, knee deep in the middle of this
- 1:10Speaker 5: move and yeah, it's, it's not going speedily. We'll say, yeah,
- 1:15Speaker 5: there's no way in hell we were fitting everyone into
- 1:17Speaker 5: the studio as it were. We are at least in
- 1:20Speaker 5: the new, uh, the new building here. The structure is here,
- 1:23Speaker 5: but yeah, there's just boxes and boxes and it's out
- 1:27Speaker 5: of control really. So that, uh, having been said, uh,
- 1:31Speaker 5: I'm trying to readjust things and, uh, you know make
- 1:35Speaker 5: it work somehow this week so i at least crammed
- 1:38Speaker 5: enough space for us to do a one person setup
- 1:41Speaker 5: here and brought in marlena so you've climbed over boxes
- 1:44Speaker 5: and over the ladder to get to the seat that
- 1:47Speaker 5: we've shoved out of the way here so yeah.
- 1:49Speaker 6: And i'm not knocking your paint colors because i think
- 1:51Speaker 6: they look great when they're done but just the orange
- 1:54Speaker 6: the red and the yellow right now it looks like
- 1:55Speaker 6: a taco bar threw up.
- 1:56Speaker 7: We're not discussing those yet because they're not done sorry.
- 2:02Speaker 5: Spoiler alert yeah it's gonna be awesome when it's done
- 2:06Speaker 5: you just wait i believe so yeah otherwise uh we're
- 2:10Speaker 5: planning on getting somewhat back on track by next week
- 2:13Speaker 5: so hopefully this will uh be a nice little bonus
- 2:17Speaker 5: episode here this was also a good excuse because um
- 2:20Speaker 5: i've been wanting to do the movie we're going to
- 2:23Speaker 5: discuss today and everyone else was frightened by it I
- 2:26Speaker 5: even mentioned it to Misty today, and she did not
- 2:29Speaker 5: have a good reaction, let's say. Once I described what
- 2:32Speaker 5: it was. We'll get to that later. But yeah, everyone
- 2:35Speaker 5: else was, I'm pretty sure, just totally freaked out by
- 2:37Speaker 5: today's movie. So if there was anybody who was sucker
- 2:40Speaker 5: enough to sit down and watch that, I figured it
- 2:42Speaker 5: was Marlene.
- 2:44Speaker 6: Yep. I'm a sucker.
- 2:47Speaker 2: All right.
- 2:47Speaker 5: So to at least keep our sort of normal rundown
- 2:52Speaker 5: going here, we can do a minor version of the
- 2:54Speaker 5: Geek Activities. uh mine aside from moving and it's been
- 2:58Speaker 5: pretty much moving non-stop every day i get up at
- 3:01Speaker 5: like daybreak at this point in the last two days
- 3:05Speaker 5: anyway it's light out i guess i have to go
- 3:06Speaker 5: all shit so yeah moving but i found the only
- 3:11Speaker 5: other because i haven't actually sat down to watch anything
- 3:14Speaker 5: in weeks and weeks and weeks outside of the movie
- 3:17Speaker 5: we watched last week but Short of that, the only
- 3:19Speaker 5: thing I've watched, and I found this is, like, the
- 3:21Speaker 5: perfect thing to have on during the unpacking mode and
- 3:25Speaker 5: the reorganizing mode, because a lot of times you don't
- 3:29Speaker 5: even have to pay that much attention. And I didn't
- 3:32Speaker 5: plan on liking this. I thought it was a weird
- 3:35Speaker 5: thing when they made a show out of it. But, yeah,
- 3:37Speaker 5: this past week I've been watching Glee.
- 3:39Speaker 6: Oh, I love Glee.
- 3:41Speaker 7: Okay, see?
- 3:42Speaker 6: You're not alone.
- 3:43Speaker 8: Okay.
- 3:43Speaker 5: I figure many people at home just went, ugh, gay.
- 3:46Speaker 1: But.
- 3:48Speaker 7: That's the knee-jerk reaction, but I have.
- 3:50Speaker 5: To say, screw you if you think that, because it's
- 3:52Speaker 5: pretty awesome, I have to say. It's entertaining on many levels,
- 3:57Speaker 5: but yeah, I noticed it was so perfect for the
- 3:59Speaker 5: packing thing, because half the time they're just, you know,
- 4:01Speaker 5: dancing around and crazy shit, and you don't really have
- 4:03Speaker 5: to pay attention. But to balance out, there are a
- 4:06Speaker 5: lot of really good, heavy scenes. Like, it's a well-acted
- 4:11Speaker 5: show on top of that. I thought they were going
- 4:13Speaker 5: a little cliche with the character's They do have everything represented.
- 4:17Speaker 6: Yeah, they're definitely playing off the High School Musical theme
- 4:21Speaker 6: quite a bit.
- 4:21Speaker 5: But it's like if High School Musical was aimed towards adults, basically.
- 4:25Speaker 5: It's a lot more sophisticated and sometimes realistic in ways
- 4:29Speaker 5: that High School Musical would be afraid to be. I'm
- 4:32Speaker 5: pretty sure the head cheerleader was not knocked up in
- 4:34Speaker 5: High School Musical.
- 4:35Speaker 2: That's true. Yeah.
- 4:38Speaker 5: Do they work anybody gay in High School Musical? Because,
- 4:40Speaker 5: I mean, they need to.
- 4:42Speaker 6: I don't know if he was openly gay, but there
- 4:43Speaker 6: was definitely a gay guy.
- 4:45Speaker 7: There's a lot of closeted guys in that one.
- 4:48Speaker 6: I don't know. I've never seen High School Musical.
- 4:50Speaker 2: I haven't either.
- 4:50Speaker 6: But the other day, it was the zombie prom episode
- 4:55Speaker 6: of Wizards of Waverly Place.
- 4:56Speaker 5: Well, that's different.
- 4:57Speaker 8: That's awesome.
- 4:57Speaker 6: And then High School Musical came on after that. So
- 5:00Speaker 6: I watched the first three minutes, and then Andrew walked
- 5:02Speaker 6: in and said.
- 5:03Speaker 7: Oh, my God.
- 5:04Speaker 6: What is this? Please change this. Please change this now.
- 5:07Speaker 6: But he would get really pissed off when I would
- 5:09Speaker 6: watch Glee. He'd be like, can you, because I'd watch
- 5:11Speaker 6: it on my laptop, and he would say, will you
- 5:13Speaker 6: please put your headphones on, please?
- 5:16Speaker 5: Wow.
- 5:16Speaker 6: I mean, as much as I enjoy the show, their
- 5:20Speaker 6: music number is not my favorite. It's too, like, modern.
- 5:24Speaker 5: It depends. They do some weird weaving of songs that are, like,
- 5:29Speaker 5: really well put together. So some of that I like,
- 5:31Speaker 5: because there was one this past week that was just, like,
- 5:35Speaker 5: two or three different songs and like just sort of
- 5:37Speaker 5: seamlessly worked into one new song that was kind of
- 5:40Speaker 5: impressive really.
- 5:41Speaker 6: So bust a move no that was an old.
- 5:44Speaker 5: Episode god i i guess i haven't seen that's the
- 5:46Speaker 5: thing i i had not seen any of the uh
- 5:49Speaker 5: the show itself when it started and sort of saw
- 5:52Speaker 5: part of one a long time ago and was just
- 5:54Speaker 5: confused by it, as most people probably are, and then
- 5:57Speaker 5: just picked up, you know, because I could take the
- 5:58Speaker 5: laptop wherever I was working and watch it on Hulu.
- 6:01Speaker 5: And the one thing that I remember the first time,
- 6:04Speaker 5: it kind of annoyed me, and it still sort of
- 6:06Speaker 5: annoys me, and this is probably what annoys me about
- 6:08Speaker 5: a lot of musicals, the breakout into song kind of musicals.
- 6:14Speaker 5: In this one, it's in a weird situation because they're
- 6:16Speaker 5: in a, a situation where most of their songs are
- 6:19Speaker 5: actually being sung. It's not like a fictional world where
- 6:23Speaker 5: they just break it. Like they're in a room where
- 6:25Speaker 5: they practice singing and they really are singing these songs.
- 6:28Speaker 5: So the fact that they don't use microphones kind of
- 6:30Speaker 5: annoys me because it now makes it not real anymore.
- 6:34Speaker 5: Like if they were just like, if it was really
- 6:36Speaker 5: just focusing on these kids in like a, you know,
- 6:38Speaker 5: a performance type school or, you know, the classes in
- 6:42Speaker 5: any high school, And they actually had microphones and it
- 6:45Speaker 5: was just, this is these kids rehearsing these numbers. It
- 6:47Speaker 5: would be a lot more realistic than them just breaking
- 6:50Speaker 5: out into song.
- 6:51Speaker 6: I'm going to have to disagree with you on that
- 6:52Speaker 6: because I was in chorus and elementary and middle school
- 6:56Speaker 6: and we didn't use microphones. Because when you've got a
- 6:58Speaker 6: group of people singing, you don't necessarily use microphones.
- 7:01Speaker 5: Yeah, but they all do solo. Like, they've got background going,
- 7:04Speaker 5: but everybody does a solo and you can hear them
- 7:06Speaker 5: perfectly over the live band that's in the room half
- 7:09Speaker 5: the time. I'm just like, no. I was like, this
- 7:12Speaker 5: is not... in what little I know of audio obviously
- 7:15Speaker 5: I've spent the last couple of years here messing with
- 7:17Speaker 5: it knowing you would be completely drowned out now I'm
- 7:21Speaker 5: being tech geek so this is definitely a geek activity
- 7:24Speaker 5: because I'm being a tech geek now so yeah so
- 7:26Speaker 5: for some reason and I guess it's one of the
- 7:29Speaker 5: things that kind of annoys me about a lot of
- 7:30Speaker 5: musicals but other than that there's still a lot of
- 7:34Speaker 5: fun stuff to be had with it so.
- 7:36Speaker 6: I mean the idea that your life can't break out
- 7:39Speaker 6: into random song it happens it happens to me Quite often.
- 7:44Speaker 5: Sad, really.
- 7:46Speaker 6: Yeah, all the time, actually. But that's just because I
- 7:48Speaker 6: like to sing, so.
- 7:51Speaker 5: But yeah, that was pretty much it. That was about
- 7:53Speaker 5: the only other thing I did outside of moving this week, so.
- 7:57Speaker 5: Any geek activities for you?
- 7:59Speaker 6: I haven't watched too much. I've started to watch Tales
- 8:01Speaker 6: from the Crypt.
- 8:03Speaker 5: Starting from, like, season one uh well.
- 8:06Speaker 6: It's supposed to but we actually started at season two
- 8:08Speaker 6: just because we have season.
- 8:11Speaker 5: Yeah well the season one's only like six.
- 8:12Speaker 6: Episodes or something it doesn't matter it's not like it's
- 8:15Speaker 6: a storyline that it follows you can watch each episode that's.
- 8:18Speaker 5: But they had awesome directors the first yeah i think
- 8:21Speaker 5: that was the robert that was back when robert zemeckis
- 8:23Speaker 5: was awesome yeah So, yeah, his episodes are always cool.
- 8:26Speaker 6: Yeah, there were some episodes by Robert Zemeckis, I'm pretty sure.
- 8:29Speaker 5: He's a producer on all of them, but, yeah, he
- 8:30Speaker 5: directed at least three out of the first couple of seasons. Yeah. So,
- 8:34Speaker 5: his are always... His is the Santa Claus one.
- 8:37Speaker 2: I don't know this one.
- 8:39Speaker 5: Oh, man, it's creepy as hell.
- 8:41Speaker 6: I only watched a few of them. The first one
- 8:43Speaker 6: I watched had Demi Moore and Jeffrey Tambor. And it
- 8:47Speaker 6: took me the whole episode. I was like, I know
- 8:49Speaker 6: this guy because he had prosthetics and a lot of
- 8:51Speaker 6: makeup on. And it pissed me off. I'm like, I
- 8:53Speaker 6: know who this is. I can imagine what he looks
- 8:55Speaker 6: like without makeup on. But I could not think of
- 8:58Speaker 6: who it was. And at the end of the credits,
- 9:00Speaker 6: I was like, ah, Jeffrey Tambor.
- 9:02Speaker 7: Okay.
- 9:03Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 9:05Speaker 5: I haven't watched those in forever. I do need to
- 9:06Speaker 5: go back.
- 9:07Speaker 6: Buybacks has them on sale. And you can get them
- 9:10Speaker 6: online for cheap, too.
- 9:11Speaker 5: They're pretty cheap anyway.
- 9:13Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 9:14Speaker 5: I guess it's been so long they didn't do one
- 9:16Speaker 5: of those $ 130 box sets for a season.
- 9:19Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 9:20Speaker 6: I didn't realize there was as many seasons as there are.
- 9:24Speaker 5: It's one of those that kind of jumped the shark
- 9:26Speaker 5: at some point. I'm sure. And I was such a
- 9:28Speaker 5: huge fan going in, but after a while I lost track.
- 9:32Speaker 5: I was like, oh, did the new season start?
- 9:33Speaker 8: Oh, well, whatever.
- 9:34Speaker 5: So I missed the last two or three seasons. I
- 9:37Speaker 5: think even I forgot to watch them.
- 9:39Speaker 6: I knew it existed, and I know I've seen episodes,
- 9:43Speaker 6: but I think it was an HBO or Showtime show,
- 9:46Speaker 6: which I never had as a child growing up. So
- 9:50Speaker 6: I definitely missed out on a lot. They must have
- 9:52Speaker 6: had regular episodes air on TV or episodes air on
- 9:55Speaker 6: regular TV.
- 9:56Speaker 7: Yeah, like years later. It was like 10 years later.
- 9:59Speaker 5: Somebody bought it. them and edited out all the stuff
- 10:02Speaker 5: that they couldn't. They changed the language and took out
- 10:04Speaker 5: the nudity, which is what sold it so well on
- 10:06Speaker 5: cable television. They edited it minorly and put it on
- 10:11Speaker 5: 10 o'clock at night or something. They put it on
- 10:14Speaker 5: one of the off networks.
- 10:15Speaker 6: That must have been what it was because I remember it.
- 10:17Speaker 6: But One of my favorite episodes, I've only seen like
- 10:20Speaker 6: four episodes or so, but it was, I think it
- 10:23Speaker 6: was called The Mummy. And it was about a circus
- 10:27Speaker 6: freak named, I can't remember. Okay, I suck at telling stories.
- 10:34Speaker 4: Oh.
- 10:35Speaker 5: You would have guessed. But is it a funny story?
- 10:38Speaker 6: No, it's not a funny story.
- 10:40Speaker 2: Damn.
- 10:40Speaker 6: But it's about how the Crypt Keeper came to be.
- 10:44Speaker 6: His father was a two-faced circus freak and his mom
- 10:46Speaker 6: was a mummy.
- 10:48Speaker 5: Awesome. I'm sure I've seen that one and have forgotten
- 10:51Speaker 5: by now.
- 10:51Speaker 6: Yeah, it was really funny.
- 10:53Speaker 5: I do need to go back and watch those again.
- 10:55Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 10:56Speaker 9: All right.
- 10:57Speaker 6: Yeah, I've been watching Tales from the Crypt and then
- 11:00Speaker 6: at work just re-watching episodes of the Antonio treatment. God.
- 11:06Speaker 5: I'm avoiding this show.
- 11:07Speaker 2: No.
- 11:07Speaker 5: I know you're sold on it.
- 11:09Speaker 2: No, you don't understand.
- 11:10Speaker 6: HGTV canceled it, I think, or they postponed the episodes.
- 11:14Speaker 6: So I've just watched the ones I didn't get to
- 11:16Speaker 6: see on On Demand. And I just, I'm pissed. He's
- 11:20Speaker 6: my Facebook friend now.
- 11:24Speaker 5: Oh, everybody can be your Facebook friend.
- 11:26Speaker 6: Yeah, I know, but I mean, I don't care about
- 11:28Speaker 6: adding bands or anybody really, but I was like, I
- 11:31Speaker 6: need to add Antonio because then I will know if
- 11:34Speaker 6: a show is coming back on. I will see the
- 11:37Speaker 6: update on Facebook and I will know to have someone
- 11:39Speaker 6: DVR it for me.
- 11:41Speaker 8: What a dork.
- 11:41Speaker 5: I mean, it's not like I friended Catherine Murray.
- 11:43Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, I did. Yeah, exactly. Oops.
- 11:47Speaker 5: And I was pretty excited by that, too.
- 11:49Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 11:50Speaker 6: I mean, why wouldn't I like that show? He likes
- 11:54Speaker 6: Italian food and dogs, and he's an interior designer, and
- 11:58Speaker 6: he always has, like, black flag shirts and stuff on,
- 12:00Speaker 6: which is awesome.
- 12:01Speaker 5: That's unusual for designers.
- 12:02Speaker 6: He's, like, my hero.
- 12:04Speaker 5: Nice. All right. I guess that will round out the
- 12:09Speaker 5: Geek Week.
- 12:10Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 12:10Speaker 5: So while continuing to do things a little different this week,
- 12:14Speaker 5: we are now going to go live, or not so live.
- 12:16Speaker 5: To a parking lot at a local Asceneplex, with some
- 12:20Speaker 5: of the crew has decided to go see the new movie,
- 12:22Speaker 5: The Blackwaters of Echo Pond. So, off to the parking lot?
- 12:28Speaker 6: I guess so.
- 12:29Speaker 8: And now it's time for a parking lot review.
- 12:34Speaker 2: Check this out, guys. Look at this. Looks like some
- 12:37Speaker 2: sort of game.
- 12:38Speaker 6: Each player selects a game piece.
- 12:41Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, it's like Monopoly. You roll the dice and.
- 12:43Speaker 9: Move to space.
- 12:44Speaker 2: Let's play.
- 12:45Speaker 10: The key to unlock the mayhem lies within the fleet itself.
- 12:50Speaker 11: There are those who say the ghoul is still here
- 13:02Speaker 11: on this island lurking for his next kill.
- 13:06Speaker 10: What's up?
- 13:29Speaker 5: We're here, live, in the parking lot of the theater
- 13:32Speaker 5: where we just watched, what the hell's the.
- 13:33Speaker 2: Name of the thing again?
- 13:35Speaker 3: Dark Waters of Stone.
- 13:36Speaker 2: The Horrors of Black Water Pond. Black Waters of Echo's Pond.
- 13:40Speaker 2: Are you fucking enjoying that?
- 13:41Speaker 3: No, it's a cigarette. I roll my own.
- 13:43Speaker 2: It's like a weed.
- 13:46Speaker 7: Oh, I think you need it after this.
- 13:47Speaker 2: Jesus, yes.
- 13:48Speaker 7: We should probably introduce ourselves.
- 13:49Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 13:50Speaker 2: Hey, I'm Brian.
- 13:51Speaker 3: This is Roger.
- 13:53Speaker 2: And this is Rod at Stony Brook Theater. Hanging out
- 13:56Speaker 2: in the parking lot. Loving it.
- 13:58Speaker 7: Discussing whatever the hell the name of this movie is.
- 14:00Speaker 5: Echoes of Blackwater's... Blackwater's... Horrors of Blackwater, Daniel Harris.
- 14:08Speaker 7: James Duvall, Drunk Driving Again, whatever the hell we're calling this.
- 14:11Speaker 2: This is going to be the most unusual podcast we've
- 14:14Speaker 2: ever done because we're basically sitting in the parking lot
- 14:19Speaker 2: at National Amusement. Is it Stony Brook?
- 14:22Speaker 7: Yeah, this one is Stony Brook if you have yourself
- 14:24Speaker 7: a Stony Brook.
- 14:25Speaker 2: Cinema Deluxe 2020.
- 14:27Speaker 3: And we just experienced one of the most special theater showings.
- 14:35Speaker 5: Yeah, we'll throw out a big spoiler alert. This is
- 14:39Speaker 5: sort of technically a new movie, even though it's been
- 14:42Speaker 5: sort of done for about two, two and a half
- 14:44Speaker 5: years now. But nobody's seen it unless you've been on
- 14:46Speaker 5: the festival circuit.
- 14:47Speaker 2: About two years ago, we were going to show this
- 14:49Speaker 2: movie at Fright Night Film Festival. Which would have been
- 14:54Speaker 2: on a shitty DVD player with about 10 people. Which
- 14:56Speaker 2: would have made sense. And the movie would have totally
- 14:59Speaker 2: been okay.
- 15:01Speaker 3: This is a theater release of something that I see
- 15:04Speaker 3: packaged as a straight-to-DVD.
- 15:06Speaker 5: Yeah, I have to say, it did feel like I
- 15:09Speaker 5: should have hit eject at the end of this.
- 15:10Speaker 2: Well, I've got to admit... Late last week, I saw
- 15:15Speaker 2: that the Blackwaters of Echo's Pond was opening wide, and
- 15:19Speaker 2: it was playing here in three of the biggest theaters
- 15:22Speaker 2: in town. And you think about Iron Man 2 is
- 15:26Speaker 2: going to play here in the same theater that the
- 15:29Speaker 2: Blackwaters of Echo's Pond plays.
- 15:30Speaker 7: And Marmaduke.
- 15:33Speaker 2: So anyway, I guess we should set this up. We're
- 15:36Speaker 2: kind of familiar with a lot of the people involved
- 15:39Speaker 2: in this film. You guys are.
- 15:41Speaker 3: I'm almost glad that I'm not.
- 15:42Speaker 5: I still say the entire deal for this movie was
- 15:44Speaker 5: made while sitting at Horror Hound Weekend. I mean, everybody
- 15:48Speaker 5: that's been at every one of these conventions is all
- 15:51Speaker 5: in this movie, except the people that are totally useless, which.
- 15:54Speaker 7: We won't even go into them because I don't remember
- 15:56Speaker 7: who they are.
- 15:57Speaker 2: The only guy that I've met, that I've at least
- 16:00Speaker 2: met and I'm not friends with but have met is
- 16:03Speaker 2: Sean Clark.
- 16:03Speaker 7: Yeah, I've talked to him a few times.
- 16:05Speaker 2: He is a writer for Horror Hound magazine. He does
- 16:09Speaker 2: the Horror's Hallowed Grounds column. And he also does, I think,
- 16:13Speaker 2: sort of a podcast TV show of that. And he's
- 16:16Speaker 2: kind of a cool guy. Now, he didn't make this
- 16:19Speaker 2: movie himself. He's not the director. He was the co-writer
- 16:22Speaker 2: and co-producer, but there were a lot of producers.
- 16:24Speaker 5: But he's been pushing it for about two years now.
- 16:26Speaker 5: He's been traveling around showcasing it. He sets up a
- 16:30Speaker 5: table and just promotes this. The posters are pretty cool.
- 16:33Speaker 5: The posters are awesome, actually. He's got several. The last
- 16:36Speaker 5: time we saw him at the last Horror Hound, He
- 16:38Speaker 5: had like three different ones, and they were all really cool.
- 16:41Speaker 3: So there's a lot of pitching for this movie.
- 16:43Speaker 2: Oh, yeah. Right on. In the indie film circuit.
- 16:46Speaker 7: In the convention circuit, really.
- 16:48Speaker 2: You didn't hear about it on Any Cool or Entertainment Tonight.
- 16:51Speaker 2: Hell no.
- 16:51Speaker 3: That would have totally blown my mind.
- 16:54Speaker 2: There's a lot of convention circuit people in it. Primarily
- 16:58Speaker 2: Daniel Harris, who everybody here in the show is in
- 17:00Speaker 2: love with. Yes. Danielle, I'm really sorry you're in this movie.
- 17:04Speaker 2: Because we're about ready to rip this film a new ass.
- 17:07Speaker 5: She is definitely the high point of the movie. And
- 17:09Speaker 5: even if I didn't think she's awesome, I would still
- 17:11Speaker 5: have to say. Again, watching her scenes, she's a good actress.
- 17:15Speaker 5: And it's a shame she's kind of thrown in here
- 17:17Speaker 5: with some of these other lesser people.
- 17:19Speaker 2: I don't think anyone could have pulled off the dialogue
- 17:21Speaker 2: she was given. So she doesn't. I mean, I'm not
- 17:24Speaker 2: going to even go easy on Danielle on this one.
- 17:26Speaker 2: Because I don't think anybody could have survived this movie
- 17:29Speaker 2: with any integrity intact. This movie also stars the babysitter twins,
- 17:35Speaker 2: which are Robert Rodriguez's nieces, I guess. And I've met them, too.
- 17:39Speaker 2: And they're actually really nice. I like them. They suck
- 17:43Speaker 2: at this movie. They're terrible.
- 17:44Speaker 5: I've never really seen them turn in a good performance,
- 17:47Speaker 5: but they seem nice enough at the convention.
- 17:49Speaker 3: And they're cute twins, so you've got to give them that.
- 17:51Speaker 2: They are pretty hot.
- 17:52Speaker 5: And James Duvall, our hero of the movie.
- 17:56Speaker 2: He's kind of like... An indie film hero. He's been
- 18:00Speaker 2: in every gay indie film of the last 10 years. Yeah.
- 18:03Speaker 2: And I'm thinking he's got to be 40.
- 18:05Speaker 5: But he's still pulling off that 25 look. Because he
- 18:08Speaker 5: won't get a haircut.
- 18:09Speaker 7: That's his thing, man. It's like his Samson hair. It
- 18:12Speaker 7: keeps him young.
- 18:13Speaker 2: This is totally the movie people make fun of when
- 18:15Speaker 2: you talk about 30-year-old teenagers. I guess they're not supposed
- 18:18Speaker 2: to be teenagers technically because they're supposed to have graduated school.
- 18:22Speaker 7: Yeah, they're all out of college and everything.
- 18:24Speaker 2: So they're supposed to be in their mid-20s, I guess.
- 18:26Speaker 2: Most of them are close to their age, yeah.
- 18:28Speaker 5: It's a five-year range of probably older than they really
- 18:31Speaker 5: are supposed to be playing.
- 18:32Speaker 2: But they're still playing stupid kids that go to a
- 18:34Speaker 2: park and woo-hoo and drink and smoke pot and do
- 18:37Speaker 2: terrible things before they get kids.
- 18:39Speaker 5: I mean, it's a very classic horror movie setup. No
- 18:42Speaker 5: surprise there.
- 18:43Speaker 3: Until you throw the spoiler alert. We should throw a
- 18:46Speaker 3: general spoiler alert. It seemed like it was following the
- 18:51Speaker 3: natural format until they pulled out the Jumanji board.
- 18:55Speaker 2: It's Jumanji from hell.
- 18:56Speaker 3: Even though there are no manifestations of giant elephants rampaging
- 19:00Speaker 3: or anything like that.
- 19:01Speaker 7: I wish there were, actually.
- 19:02Speaker 2: There is.
- 19:04Speaker 3: The pan monster, pan demon monster. Beelzebub thing.
- 19:10Speaker 2: The Jumanji board is the MacGuffin of this movie. It's cool.
- 19:16Speaker 2: Whoever built that thing is pretty cool.
- 19:18Speaker 3: It looks awesome, actually. It's got functions. It's got mechanical
- 19:23Speaker 3: gear driven things that rotate and illuminate, I guess.
- 19:30Speaker 2: The movie opens.
- 19:33Speaker 2: How many hundreds of years ago? Maybe... I don't know.
- 19:35Speaker 7: I don't know.
- 19:36Speaker 3: 18... I don't even remember what the date was.
- 19:39Speaker 2: We kind of walked in and it had already started,
- 19:41Speaker 2: so we kind of maybe... Maybe that's the whole problem. No,
- 19:45Speaker 2: it wasn't. We missed 30 seconds.
- 19:46Speaker 4: No, it wasn't.
- 19:47Speaker 2: Anyway, these guys, archaeologists, I guess. have dug up this
- 19:51Speaker 2: ancient board game. Board game. You really have to laugh
- 19:55Speaker 2: at it.
- 19:56Speaker 7: I mean, it does seem silly when you discuss it
- 19:59Speaker 7: on this level.
- 20:00Speaker 2: And they discovered that apparently it was... Originally, before it
- 20:03Speaker 2: was translated into English, it was written by Pan, I guess,
- 20:07Speaker 2: or something like that.
- 20:08Speaker 5: So Pan's writing cards that say, you win second prize
- 20:11Speaker 5: in a beauty contest.
- 20:11Speaker 2: The whole game is set up so you play it
- 20:13Speaker 2: and you reveal all your darkest stuff and you eventually
- 20:16Speaker 2: kill everyone.
- 20:17Speaker 3: Because I guess what you reveal has to be done.
- 20:21Speaker 3: involving the people playing there's got there's got to be.
- 20:24Speaker 2: I thought it had something to do with evoking pan
- 20:26Speaker 2: or bringing pan in the real world it really never
- 20:29Speaker 2: doesn't kind of gets that.
- 20:30Speaker 5: What it involves is screwing yourself over in the middle
- 20:33Speaker 5: of your friends yeah it becomes the worst game of
- 20:36Speaker 5: like scruples or whatever you're playing like you know you
- 20:39Speaker 5: get together with these couples and you have this hey
- 20:41Speaker 5: it's game night let's all play and then fiction is
- 20:44Speaker 5: In this version, it's basically, let's pull out every horrible
- 20:47Speaker 5: secret you've had that involves the other people sitting in
- 20:50Speaker 5: the circle and then piss everyone off. Yeah, I want
- 20:54Speaker 5: to fuck your wife. I killed your brother. You name it.
- 20:56Speaker 5: This is the worst group of ideas to throw into
- 20:59Speaker 5: a game.
- 21:00Speaker 2: And they keep playing.
- 21:01Speaker 7: Yeah, after every five-minute segment of horror, it's, hey, pass
- 21:04Speaker 7: me the dice. All right, next up.
- 21:05Speaker 2: Relationships are being destroyed.
- 21:07Speaker 3: Relationships are being devastated. But, hey, it's my turn. It's
- 21:10Speaker 3: your role.
- 21:11Speaker 7: My turn.
- 21:11Speaker 2: Roll the dice. And then the movie has the audacity
- 21:14Speaker 2: to promise all kinds of stuff.
- 21:15Speaker 7: Oh, yeah.
- 21:16Speaker 2: Lesbianism, nudity from people. You don't get to see anyone
- 21:20Speaker 2: you would want to see nude in this movie.
- 21:22Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 21:22Speaker 3: You get the token chick who looks exactly like.
- 21:27Speaker 7: Yeah, like a poor man's Jessica Simpson, basically.
- 21:29Speaker 3: Straight up, like it was almost uncanny.
- 21:31Speaker 7: Yeah, but even cheaper, if that's possible.
- 21:35Speaker 2: You get the one girl in the movie they hired
- 21:36Speaker 2: because she said she would take her top off. You
- 21:39Speaker 2: don't get any of the people you want.
- 21:40Speaker 5: Yeah, you look at the cast and you go, oh,
- 21:42Speaker 5: we're going to see her boobs, and you do, and whoopee.
- 21:45Speaker 5: They're fake, and they make fun of the fact that
- 21:46Speaker 5: they're fake the entire movie.
- 21:48Speaker 2: So who cares?
- 21:52Speaker 7: Roger's dying.
- 21:52Speaker 2: I'm sorry.
- 21:54Speaker 3: But the breast shot was worth it.
- 21:58Speaker 2: If he says so.
- 21:58Speaker 7: She's lame.
- 22:00Speaker 3: But I agree, yeah. It promises a lot. It delivers
- 22:02Speaker 3: very little on what it promises, except there's good gore.
- 22:06Speaker 3: There is some good gore.
- 22:07Speaker 2: The gore is pretty well done in this movie, but
- 22:10Speaker 2: you expect that from this kind of movie.
- 22:11Speaker 10: Exactly.
- 22:12Speaker 2: That's apparently where all the attention went.
- 22:16Speaker 5: I guess at some point they turn into the evil.
- 22:19Speaker 5: I guess the pan takes over their mind or their
- 22:22Speaker 5: body or whatever the hell goes on.
- 22:24Speaker 3: You know this by the eyes turning black.
- 22:26Speaker 5: Which they scram from X-Files. While they had Robert Patrick there,
- 22:31Speaker 5: they were just going, let's steal some other stuff.
- 22:33Speaker 2: From X-Files too.
- 22:35Speaker 5: So yeah, they steal the black eyes from X-Files, which
- 22:37Speaker 5: they probably stole from somebody too.
- 22:39Speaker 7: And, yeah, everybody becomes evil.
- 22:42Speaker 5: The only other person that was actually kind of tolerable,
- 22:45Speaker 5: the black dude in the wife beater, he's pretty, like,
- 22:48Speaker 5: he's actually, like, as the game goes on, he's a
- 22:50Speaker 5: little more believable. Everybody else is kind of, like, you
- 22:53Speaker 5: just want to smack him.
- 22:54Speaker 7: He's almost a decent actor.
- 22:55Speaker 2: Believable or not, acting or not, unfortunately, this entire cast
- 22:59Speaker 2: is nothing but douchebags. Yeah. There's not a single likable character.
- 23:03Speaker 6: No.
- 23:04Speaker 2: That's the major problem with this movie. Yeah. It's not
- 23:06Speaker 2: scary and it's not suspenseful. And if you want to
- 23:09Speaker 2: create suspense, you have to at least sort of like
- 23:12Speaker 2: or identify with some of the characters. So you'll care
- 23:15Speaker 2: about whether they die or not. This film is filled
- 23:18Speaker 2: with absolutely wretched people. All of them. We're rooting for
- 23:22Speaker 2: them to die. They're terrible.
- 23:23Speaker 5: Which, I mean, again, that's a classic horror movie thing
- 23:25Speaker 5: is put a bunch of douchebags together and watch them die.
- 23:27Speaker 7: But there's usually a good girl.
- 23:29Speaker 2: There's usually the final girl.
- 23:31Speaker 7: Which I guess Danielle's supposed to be.
- 23:33Speaker 2: Yeah, but she's a terrible bitch.
- 23:35Speaker 7: She's not great either, yeah.
- 23:36Speaker 2: Her character's a horrible person. She's only the final girl
- 23:40Speaker 2: because she's Danielle Henry.
- 23:41Speaker 7: Yeah, because you want to keep her in this movie.
- 23:43Speaker 2: And James Duvall is the only survivor because he's James Duvall.
- 23:45Speaker 2: He's recognizable, yeah. Yes, you know. But the Nova, none
- 23:49Speaker 2: of them are decent people. Usually you get a final
- 23:51Speaker 2: girl that's kind of a virginal character. It's a classic horror.
- 23:55Speaker 2: Everybody here are whores and douchebags. You don't get any
- 23:58Speaker 2: good characters, really. So, yeah, I didn't care about anybody.
- 24:02Speaker 4: No.
- 24:02Speaker 3: And we actually wanted the main guy. We all wanted
- 24:05Speaker 3: to die.
- 24:06Speaker 2: Oh, my God.
- 24:07Speaker 1: Mr.
- 24:08Speaker 2: Hook. Apparently this guy is one of the producers.
- 24:12Speaker 7: Kids or something it has to be what accent.
- 24:15Speaker 2: Was that I have no idea I think I've seen
- 24:17Speaker 2: this guy before playing violin or something I'm pretty sure
- 24:21Speaker 2: he's some kind of music guy but he is wretched.
- 24:24Speaker 5: I thought I was trying to decide what form of
- 24:27Speaker 5: Euro trash he was because he's got this weird European
- 24:31Speaker 5: kind of accent but it's so non-descript it's just this.
- 24:35Speaker 2: Weird basically got Chris Makepeace's hair or like pubic hair
- 24:39Speaker 2: on his head yeah what was that.
- 24:41Speaker 5: He's an idiot, he's a terrible actor, and he does
- 24:44Speaker 5: not die fast enough.
- 24:46Speaker 3: We all were rooting for him to die first. By
- 24:48Speaker 3: the way, we were the only people in the theater,
- 24:50Speaker 3: so we could talk out loud. Now, invent them and
- 24:53Speaker 3: not worry about destroying anybody's, you know.
- 24:55Speaker 2: This is another unique thing is, like, since we actually
- 24:58Speaker 2: were the only three people in the theater, we actually
- 25:00Speaker 2: could just act like it was the living room and
- 25:02Speaker 2: just say whatever we wanted. And we did. Which was
- 25:05Speaker 2: kind of liberating.
- 25:06Speaker 7: It became Mystery Science Theater 3000.
- 25:08Speaker 2: I'm totally respectful. If there was even one other person
- 25:11Speaker 2: in the theater, I would have never.
- 25:12Speaker 7: I would have shut the hell up.
- 25:14Speaker 2: We could all talk about this afterwards. But it was
- 25:16Speaker 2: kind of liberating sitting... at at national amusements in a
- 25:20Speaker 2: big multiplex being the only ones in there making fun
- 25:23Speaker 2: of this piece of.
- 25:24Speaker 12: Shit yep yep oh i i have to say roger
- 25:30Speaker 12: you did uh call it out for midway through i
- 25:32Speaker 12: did kind of get this feeling and then you said
- 25:34Speaker 12: it you were like it's got a real april fool's day.
- 25:37Speaker 3: Feel something about it yeah which like you said it's
- 25:40Speaker 3: not a bad thing because And I like.
- 25:42Speaker 2: April Fool's Day, the original. The major difference is April
- 25:45Speaker 2: Fool's Day is a good movie.
- 25:47Speaker 7: Yeah, it's a lot of fun.
- 25:48Speaker 5: Where this doesn't deliver on any of the levels where
- 25:51Speaker 5: that one does.
- 25:52Speaker 2: I think the only nice thing I can say about this,
- 25:54Speaker 2: and I want to say this to the person, I
- 25:55Speaker 2: don't know what their name is because I didn't catch
- 25:57Speaker 2: it in the credits, the lighting is very nice in
- 26:00Speaker 2: this movie. The scenes are very well lit and they're
- 26:03Speaker 2: atmospherically lit. If you ever did that, you did your job.
- 26:06Speaker 2: And you should thank yourself and get away from it.
- 26:08Speaker 3: But they had no way to capitalize on it, though,
- 26:11Speaker 3: at all.
- 26:11Speaker 5: I'll even give whoever, if it was the director or
- 26:14Speaker 5: just the assistant camera guy who was actually running things.
- 26:18Speaker 7: To me, it's shot pretty decent.
- 26:19Speaker 5: For the budget they had, it does look good, even lighting-wise,
- 26:22Speaker 5: but even shot-wise, it's It's pretty, yeah, it's a pretty
- 26:25Speaker 5: decent shot. The print we got wasn't so great, if
- 26:28Speaker 5: we want to go into that.
- 26:29Speaker 2: Yeah, I'll go into that. Well, weren't they strategically placed?
- 26:31Speaker 2: It looks like it took me about an hour to
- 26:33Speaker 2: figure this out. I thought we just got a shitty
- 26:35Speaker 2: DVD at one point. Because the image is crystal clear,
- 26:39Speaker 2: but it's got these bad video lines going through it.
- 26:41Speaker 2: And then eventually I was able to determine... oh, they're
- 26:44Speaker 2: doing a grindhouse kind of thing. I guess. I think.
- 26:47Speaker 2: I'm not really sure if they were. At one point
- 26:50Speaker 2: there was a green line going up the middle of
- 26:51Speaker 2: the screen for like 20 minutes. I'm like, that's good.
- 26:54Speaker 7: That's enough.
- 26:55Speaker 2: And there were so many of them through the movie
- 26:57Speaker 2: that I had to believe. You said that the posters
- 26:59Speaker 2: kind of tried to make it look like a movie
- 27:01Speaker 2: that was shot in the 80s or 70s. They're like
- 27:04Speaker 2: purposely yellowed and like ripped. And he went for, I mean,
- 27:07Speaker 2: they do look awesome. So the posters look cool and
- 27:10Speaker 2: are kind of going for that retro thing.
- 27:12Speaker 5: So.
- 27:13Speaker 7: maybe they were going for that yeah.
- 27:14Speaker 2: It's either the worst grindhouse kind of transfer on the
- 27:19Speaker 2: end that i've ever seen or we just saw a
- 27:21Speaker 2: really bad print they just made it on their home
- 27:24Speaker 2: computer and shipped it out to the stony brook here
- 27:26Speaker 2: there's like a dvdr sitting in the projection seriously Oh, man.
- 27:32Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 27:33Speaker 5: I mean, it had its moments of fun. But again,
- 27:36Speaker 5: it did very much feel like a straight-to-DVD. It felt
- 27:39Speaker 5: like when you make a microwave popcorn at home and
- 27:41Speaker 5: you sit there and laugh at the kids dying.
- 27:43Speaker 2: It felt like an amateur film, though, in every possible way. Definitely.
- 27:47Speaker 7: It didn't feel like it had the people involved.
- 27:49Speaker 13: It did.
- 27:49Speaker 2: It didn't feel like that level. I have no idea
- 27:52Speaker 2: how they got this in a theater. They either know
- 27:55Speaker 2: somebody or something. Because I just can't imagine a distributor
- 27:59Speaker 2: looking at this and... And going, oh, we should put
- 28:01Speaker 2: this in theaters next to, you know... Anything. The Chipmunks. Yeah,
- 28:06Speaker 2: I mean.
- 28:07Speaker 7: Chipmunks 3.
- 28:08Speaker 3: But I will say that for me, I think the
- 28:10Speaker 3: pluses were the death scenes. Of course, in this movie,
- 28:13Speaker 3: this type of movie, that's almost what you're going to
- 28:14Speaker 3: see anyways. You're not going to see a great script,
- 28:17Speaker 3: good acting, anything like that. It kind of delivers on...
- 28:21Speaker 3: The death scenes. A couple of them, which I don't
- 28:24Speaker 3: want to ruin the last one.
- 28:26Speaker 2: But the most annoying, you know, foreign guy with the
- 28:29Speaker 2: Chris Bates piece here. He gets killed really badly, which
- 28:32Speaker 2: we actually applaud.
- 28:34Speaker 7: And I kind of called it accidentally.
- 28:35Speaker 2: Yeah, oh no, it was perfect.
- 28:37Speaker 7: I was wishing it upon him, and then it happened.
- 28:39Speaker 13: Yeah.
- 28:40Speaker 3: And it was a pretty far-fetched idea almost.
- 28:42Speaker 2: You've got to admit, even with the accent, his performance
- 28:45Speaker 2: is appalling. He was horrible. He wouldn't even pass in
- 28:50Speaker 2: a high school play. No.
- 28:51Speaker 7: I would have made fun of him there too, no surprise.
- 28:53Speaker 3: How is he in the industry at all? It's got
- 28:55Speaker 3: to be somebody's kid.
- 28:56Speaker 2: Oh, I'm sure. I mean, look at his name.
- 28:59Speaker 7: You wouldn't hire somebody.
- 29:00Speaker 2: It's so bad to be in a movie.
- 29:01Speaker 7: You wouldn't hire somebody with that name. Come on now.
- 29:03Speaker 3: If that's his real hair.
- 29:04Speaker 2: Oh, God.
- 29:05Speaker 3: Jesus Christ almighty.
- 29:07Speaker 5: The one thing, and this is something I'd heard somebody
- 29:09Speaker 5: that saw it at a convention recently, gave it a
- 29:11Speaker 5: pretty decent review, and then they singled out James Duvall,
- 29:15Speaker 5: which I.
- 29:15Speaker 7: Have to say, I mean, he is kind of like,
- 29:16Speaker 7: you were like, oh, he's my favorite one.
- 29:18Speaker 2: I like him, yeah.
- 29:19Speaker 3: He's like, oh.
- 29:20Speaker 2: He's, I mean. Well, because, you know, the thing that
- 29:23Speaker 2: I like about James Duvall in this movie is that
- 29:25Speaker 2: everyone else hates him.
- 29:26Speaker 14: Yeah.
- 29:27Speaker 2: Everyone hates him. Like, everybody hates each other, but they
- 29:30Speaker 2: all are on the same team of hating James Duvall.
- 29:33Speaker 7: So you kind of get behind him.
- 29:35Speaker 5: But they had described him in that review as the
- 29:38Speaker 5: likable stoner. He's going to come back and save the day.
- 29:40Speaker 5: And as I'm watching, I'm like, no, he's a douchebag.
- 29:44Speaker 2: But you're thinking, okay.
- 29:45Speaker 7: He's kind of a likable douchebag.
- 29:47Speaker 5: He's a likable douchebag, so I'm assuming at the end
- 29:49Speaker 5: he's going to sort of redeem himself and come back around.
- 29:52Speaker 2: Unless someone attacks him and he throws you. He pushes
- 29:55Speaker 2: people in front of you.
- 29:57Speaker 5: Let's get at that point, because I was laughing so
- 30:00Speaker 5: loud at that point. As he shoves the girl he's
- 30:03Speaker 5: supposed to be protecting into the coming attacker. I was like,
- 30:08Speaker 5: holy shit, that was the best douchebag move I've ever seen.
- 30:11Speaker 2: Just when you're trying to like this person.
- 30:13Speaker 5: Yeah, I thought he was going to come back around
- 30:15Speaker 5: and redeem himself and make up for his past mistakes.
- 30:17Speaker 7: And no, he shoves her into a chainsaw.
- 30:19Speaker 3: But she was totally harping on his ass.
- 30:22Speaker 2: She was. She deserved it. Oh, God.
- 30:26Speaker 7: Either way, it was so awesomely douchebaggy.
- 30:29Speaker 2: I forgive him for that. Oh, man. You know, I
- 30:33Speaker 2: don't think I've ever seen a movie with this low
- 30:35Speaker 2: production value in a multiplex. And I've seen a lot
- 30:39Speaker 2: of shit. You were saying that people were seeing it
- 30:43Speaker 2: at film festivals and giving it reviews. Now, I think
- 30:45Speaker 2: you might look at this movie differently if you were
- 30:48Speaker 2: in a little room in a hotel where people put
- 30:52Speaker 2: 10 or 15 chairs in the room and somebody presses
- 30:56Speaker 2: play on the DVD player. Because you're probably seeing... 20
- 31:00Speaker 2: other films just like that.
- 31:01Speaker 7: Well, that's what I was going to say.
- 31:03Speaker 5: Probably because the one you watched before was like kids
- 31:05Speaker 5: in their basement squirting ketchup on people and going, okay,
- 31:07Speaker 5: you're dead now.
- 31:09Speaker 7: So, I mean, you see some pretty low-quality stuff at
- 31:11Speaker 7: these festivals. So, compared to those, this is a masterpiece.
- 31:15Speaker 2: This would be the top tier of those kind of movies.
- 31:17Speaker 7: Yes, and it would be the one that would finish
- 31:19Speaker 7: out the night at the film festival.
- 31:20Speaker 2: Yeah, you might be going, oh, that's genius. That was great, yeah.
- 31:24Speaker 7: Now let's go get wasted in the hotel.
- 31:26Speaker 5: But now, I mean, watching it in a theater next to, like,
- 31:30Speaker 5: multi-million dollar movies, it's kind of jarring, really, sitting there
- 31:35Speaker 5: by ourselves in the theater.
- 31:37Speaker 3: It's a demonic board game movie.
- 31:38Speaker 7: It is. That's the part that's crazy.
- 31:41Speaker 2: No, it's great.
- 31:41Speaker 3: I love it.
- 31:42Speaker 5: But at this point, it's one of those that's kind
- 31:44Speaker 5: of hard to do that. Like, I mean, as he
- 31:46Speaker 5: pulled it out, I'm going, it says Zathura on it.
- 31:49Speaker 2: What's that mean? Yeah, really.
- 31:50Speaker 7: I mean, we've already seen several... Crazy board game movie.
- 31:53Speaker 3: Written on the ancient scroll that they enroll.
- 31:56Speaker 2: Instead of a title like The Echoes of Blackwater's Pond. Yeah.
- 31:59Speaker 2: Wouldn't they just call it Daimonji or something? That's a
- 32:03Speaker 2: little catchier. I mean, it would get the concept out there.
- 32:06Speaker 7: It should be, you know, Jumanji from Hell by Milton Bradley.
- 32:10Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 32:10Speaker 3: I'm not forgiving for that. I'm okay with that.
- 32:13Speaker 2: Then I guess Blackwater's Pond is... It's actually the pond
- 32:16Speaker 2: in the center of the board game. In the game.
- 32:18Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 32:18Speaker 7: Because they're on some island that.
- 32:20Speaker 2: What was it? I don't even remember what it was called.
- 32:21Speaker 7: But it has nothing to do with Blackwater.
- 32:23Speaker 3: Well, it was a secret island that this guy owned.
- 32:25Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 32:26Speaker 6: Which.
- 32:27Speaker 7: How did this guy.
- 32:28Speaker 2: Was it his house?
- 32:29Speaker 3: Or was it, like, the guy who had all the money?
- 32:31Speaker 2: Maybe. His brother had all the money. Was that.
- 32:33Speaker 3: his dad's house that he had on the property.
- 32:35Speaker 5: Because yeah i'm trying to understood robert patrick is the
- 32:38Speaker 5: most country five like every line and he has like
- 32:41Speaker 5: several pages of dialogue by himself as he wanders around
- 32:44Speaker 5: the island going where did i put them traps and
- 32:47Speaker 5: i set some traps out for him I do.
- 32:49Speaker 2: Because reading that kind of expository dialogue, especially when you're
- 32:53Speaker 2: talking to yourself, it's probably harder to pull off than
- 32:55Speaker 2: anything else. No, he doesn't pull it off. And Robert
- 32:58Speaker 2: Patrick's actually a pretty good guy.
- 33:01Speaker 5: Again, he's one of the better points in this movie,
- 33:03Speaker 5: and that's not saying much because he's playing a yokel,
- 33:06Speaker 5: and he's walking around going, we ain't got no shitty
- 33:08Speaker 5: fire engines around here, so don't go burning down my island.
- 33:13Speaker 3: And we don't even get to see his death.
- 33:15Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 33:15Speaker 3: You hear a shotgun blast and then that's it.
- 33:17Speaker 2: He just disappears. Yeah, he's just not there anymore. I
- 33:20Speaker 2: don't know. Even Robert Patrick can't save this movie.
- 33:22Speaker 3: Maybe he just was like, I'm not showing up to film.
- 33:24Speaker 7: He's like, yeah, I'm done.
- 33:26Speaker 2: I'm the producer.
- 33:26Speaker 7: Isn't that enough to deal with?
- 33:28Speaker 3: Just scrub me out some way, somehow.
- 33:30Speaker 7: Yeah, I mean, he is sort of responsible for this movie.
- 33:32Speaker 2: Do you think that was his house they were shooting at?
- 33:35Speaker 2: It could have been.
- 33:35Speaker 5: Oh. But, yeah, I never did figure out, like, how
- 33:38Speaker 5: does this guy who seems like a yokel with no
- 33:40Speaker 5: money own this island?
- 33:42Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 33:42Speaker 7: According to him, if you're buying his story, this.
- 33:44Speaker 14: Is my island.
- 33:45Speaker 2: Why do you want these douche kids to do that?
- 33:47Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 33:47Speaker 5: It's like, how much was his dad paying him to
- 33:49Speaker 5: come here? Because I wouldn't want these douchebag kids ruining
- 33:51Speaker 5: my house.
- 33:52Speaker 2: Because they did.
- 33:53Speaker 15: Yeah.
- 33:53Speaker 7: Even if they didn't kill people, they just would have, like,
- 33:55Speaker 7: thrown up on everything.
- 33:56Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 33:57Speaker 7: And had sex everywhere. I don't want that either.
- 33:59Speaker 2: Get the fuck out of my house. They're J's. Really?
- 34:02Speaker 4: God.
- 34:03Speaker 14: So.
- 34:04Speaker 7: How do we wrap this thing up? Run out and
- 34:07Speaker 7: see it.
- 34:07Speaker 2: I'm trying to think of sides to the lighting. I
- 34:09Speaker 2: don't have any positives other than that Danielle does get
- 34:12Speaker 2: some good close-ups. She's gorgeous. She's gorgeous. Yeah, the other
- 34:17Speaker 2: black guy looks pretty.
- 34:19Speaker 5: He's a formidable villain once he crosses to the dark side.
- 34:22Speaker 5: The guy in the white theater is a badass.
- 34:24Speaker 3: He's the most frightening, like, physically.
- 34:26Speaker 5: His scenes, yeah, when he's got the black eyes. He's,
- 34:29Speaker 5: you know, he is kind of creepy looking, so I'll
- 34:32Speaker 5: give him... No, because the nerdy black guy was a doofus.
- 34:36Speaker 2: Oh, he's a doofus. I don't like that guy.
- 34:38Speaker 7: I'll kick that guy's ass.
- 34:39Speaker 6: Fuck that.
- 34:39Speaker 2: The twins were not frightening at all.
- 34:40Speaker 3: They're giggling, like, pincer attack moves.
- 34:43Speaker 2: For anybody that really... Guys, look. You know, we just
- 34:46Speaker 2: spent nine bucks on this.
- 34:48Speaker 3: Yeah. Don't do it.
- 34:49Speaker 2: This is a public service announcement. I'm going to screw
- 34:51Speaker 2: the ending of this movie.
- 34:53Speaker 6: This.
- 34:53Speaker 2: The ending of this movie is a dick in the
- 34:56Speaker 2: ass of Cinemago.
- 34:57Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 34:58Speaker 2: I mean, it literally goes for the, it was all
- 35:01Speaker 2: just a dream.
- 35:03Speaker 16: Yeah.
- 35:03Speaker 2: Oh, we were just playing a game, and oh, I
- 35:05Speaker 2: just woke up, and oh my gosh. It's your turn.
- 35:08Speaker 2: Everything that just happened was a dream. Can you believe that?
- 35:13Speaker 3: But almost, it was a dream, or do you want
- 35:16Speaker 3: it to be a reality?
- 35:17Speaker 5: Yeah, then it pulls the, ha ha, now it could
- 35:20Speaker 5: all be happening for real.
- 35:21Speaker 2: I could just be evil and kill all of you. Anyway,
- 35:25Speaker 2: that device of it's all just a dream. Any screenwriter
- 35:30Speaker 2: should know there's nothing that pisses an audience off more
- 35:33Speaker 2: than watching an hour and 45 minutes of something only
- 35:36Speaker 2: to realize that, oh, none of that really happened.
- 35:41Speaker 3: I've had dreams and they've been fucked up and they've
- 35:43Speaker 3: been better than this that.
- 35:44Speaker 2: Was the point where this movie totally lost me I
- 35:47Speaker 2: was already lost I was still looking at it like
- 35:52Speaker 2: gosh this is a little indie movie they didn't have
- 35:54Speaker 2: any money and they were working hard and I just
- 35:56Speaker 2: wanted to be nice to them and then they threw
- 35:58Speaker 2: that shit at me and there was no save from
- 36:01Speaker 2: that point.
- 36:02Speaker 5: On well I mean that's what horror movies like to
- 36:04Speaker 5: do anyway like if any movie does that twist the
- 36:07Speaker 5: twist as a genre it's horror movies I mean they
- 36:09Speaker 5: love to do that haha fake out so it's no
- 36:12Speaker 5: surprise I'm like nothing about this was surprising really it's
- 36:15Speaker 5: It played on all the conventions of your standard kids
- 36:18Speaker 5: getting knocked off one by one. Only it threw this
- 36:21Speaker 5: weird game angle in and pan that they don't make
- 36:24Speaker 5: use of.
- 36:25Speaker 2: There's a great pan. They have this great monster. This
- 36:28Speaker 2: is what we should talk about. Whoever in the effects
- 36:32Speaker 2: department built this pan creature, that thing's great looking. It's
- 36:36Speaker 2: really creepy looking. And it's on screen for like three seconds.
- 36:39Speaker 7: It peekaboos out of the fucking curtains once.
- 36:41Speaker 2: They could have made an entire movie with that thing.
- 36:43Speaker 2: And it would have been.
- 36:44Speaker 5: Good because for as much as they look like they
- 36:47Speaker 5: didn't have a ton of money, they look like they
- 36:49Speaker 5: spent a lot on that costume and the makeup effects
- 36:52Speaker 5: and whatever all they used on that because he looked good.
- 36:54Speaker 3: There was one scene where they used it where I
- 36:56Speaker 3: wish they would have used it the whole time where
- 36:58Speaker 3: it's kind of whispering into one of the chick's ears.
- 37:01Speaker 3: You can tell it's influencing her from behind the shadows
- 37:05Speaker 3: or whatever. And even if they had him in the
- 37:07Speaker 3: background kind of doing that, whenever anybody's going nuts and, like,
- 37:13Speaker 3: killing their best friend or their fiance or whatever, that
- 37:15Speaker 3: would have been better. There would have been, like, a
- 37:18Speaker 3: tic-tac of points up right there, you know?
- 37:21Speaker 7: But.
- 37:22Speaker 3: They had this great costume. Its eyes lit up. It
- 37:25Speaker 3: was creepy as shit. It was. And they didn't utilize
- 37:26Speaker 3: it at all.
- 37:27Speaker 2: The weirdest thing was there were two movies I wanted
- 37:29Speaker 2: to see this week. This one, because Danielle's in it,
- 37:33Speaker 2: and because it's opening in the multiplexes. And where else
- 37:35Speaker 2: are you going to see this movie? And the other
- 37:38Speaker 2: one was The Runaways, which actually stars Dakota Fanning and
- 37:42Speaker 2: Kristen Stewart and actually has stars in it. Okay, Blackwaters
- 37:45Speaker 2: of Echo's Pond opened in about five theaters here in Louisville.
- 37:49Speaker 7: The big multiplexes.
- 37:51Speaker 2: The Runaways opened in one theater. And like two or
- 37:54Speaker 2: three weeks later. And it's a little art theater, too.
- 37:56Speaker 2: It's not even one of the big mainstream theaters. Who
- 37:59Speaker 2: would have guessed that? What the hell is going on?
- 38:01Speaker 2: Who could call that happening? Nobody. Nobody.
- 38:05Speaker 7: Oh, man.
- 38:06Speaker 2: And I still haven't seen The Runaways, so my week
- 38:08Speaker 2: is totally screwed.
- 38:09Speaker 3: I'm going to cleanse my palate and see The Runaways
- 38:11Speaker 3: because I need a palate cleanser after this.
- 38:13Speaker 2: I'm going to try it to you later this week.
- 38:15Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 38:15Speaker 2: Man. Don't do it, folks.
- 38:17Speaker 7: You never know what you're going to get on these.
- 38:19Speaker 2: Don't do this to yourself.
- 38:22Speaker 3: I mean, really, I think waiting for DVD would be
- 38:24Speaker 3: more of an appropriate choice because for DVD, it seems
- 38:27Speaker 3: like it'd be fun sitting around with your friends.
- 38:29Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 38:29Speaker 5: I think sitting in the living room making some microwave popcorn,
- 38:32Speaker 5: you know, throwing it at the screen.
- 38:34Speaker 7: It's kind of fun.
- 38:35Speaker 2: If you were watching three shitty horror movies and this
- 38:38Speaker 2: was one of them, it wouldn't seem probably shittier than
- 38:40Speaker 2: the other half. It wouldn't faze you.
- 38:42Speaker 5: I mean, to me, this is not near as bad
- 38:45Speaker 5: or any worse than a lot of crap I watched
- 38:47Speaker 5: on cable.
- 38:48Speaker 7: And it's kind of the same storylines. I mean, it
- 38:50Speaker 7: fits that.
- 38:51Speaker 2: At least April.
- 38:52Speaker 3: Fool's Day did it good at the end when it
- 38:54Speaker 3: was like, ah.
- 38:55Speaker 2: I don't know, man. I saw parts of Mega Piranha
- 38:58Speaker 2: last night. I like that better than Blackwater Shells. That's harsh,
- 39:04Speaker 2: and I kind of agree. I definitely got more enjoyment out.
- 39:07Speaker 3: Of Mega Shark versus Giant Octopus.
- 39:09Speaker 2: The terrible thing was with Mega Piranha, you know there
- 39:11Speaker 2: was no effort put into it.
- 39:13Speaker 1: No, never.
- 39:14Speaker 2: And this movie, probably people worked hard on.
- 39:17Speaker 7: Somebody did.
- 39:18Speaker 3: For years.
- 39:20Speaker 5: I mean, he's been pushing this for years, and you
- 39:22Speaker 5: finally see.
- 39:23Speaker 2: It, and this is what it comes to. Wowzers.
- 39:25Speaker 7: It's kind of sad, really, but what are you going
- 39:28Speaker 7: to do? Wait for DVD, I guess.
- 39:30Speaker 3: Yeah, wrap it up with a, you know, wait to
- 39:32Speaker 3: see it in real life.
- 39:33Speaker 5: As the car pulls away, I guess we can tell you, yeah,
- 39:37Speaker 5: watch it at home.
- 39:38Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 39:39Speaker 3: Is that it for this segment.
- 39:41Speaker 2: Of parking lot review?
- 39:42Speaker 7: I guess this will be a parking lot review.
- 39:44Speaker 2: Yeah, this is a one-off kind of show because only
- 39:46Speaker 2: three of us are here. We're in the middle of
- 39:49Speaker 2: a parking lot. People are trying to leave.
- 39:50Speaker 3: People are giving us looks. I've already gotten a couple
- 39:53Speaker 3: of looks.
- 39:53Speaker 7: I kind of enjoy that.
- 39:54Speaker 2: I don't care. We're trying not to get hit, you know,
- 39:57Speaker 2: as we're doing the show.
- 40:00Speaker 5: So, Siri, you have to roll again.
- 40:03Speaker 17: All right, well, there you have it.
- 40:06Speaker 18: Our first parking lot review.
- 40:08Speaker 2: Exciting, yeah.
- 40:26Speaker 7: I like the ridiculousness of the idea. So yeah, I, I,
- 40:29Speaker 7: no surprise.
- 40:30Speaker 5: I pitched that.
- 40:31Speaker 14: Yeah.
- 40:31Speaker 5: Most ridiculous things that go on in this show are
- 40:33Speaker 5: usually my fault. So of course I take the blame,
- 40:35Speaker 5: but I thought it was a fun idea. All right.
- 40:39Speaker 7: Well, we will take a break and be back with
- 40:41Speaker 7: this week's feature.
- 40:47Speaker 1: Intermission time, folks. So hurry, hurry, hurry. Step right over

- 41:31Speaker 17: fine cinema?
- 41:33Speaker 6: What does that mean, Daddy?
- 41:34Speaker 17: Are you looking for knowledgeable discussions of directorial decisions?
- 41:39Speaker 2: We don't do that.
- 41:40Speaker 17: Are you looking for profound and deeply insightful critique of
- 41:43Speaker 17: film as an art form?
- 41:45Speaker 11: Dad, I don't even know what you're talking about.
- 41:47Speaker 17: Then hello, everyone. I'm Dr. J, and this is my daughter.
- 41:50Speaker 2: KK!
- 41:51Speaker 17: And we're here to bring you Family Movie Night. No,
- 41:54Speaker 17: we don't offer you all that, but what we will
- 41:56Speaker 17: offer is movie reviews that will help you to make
- 41:59Speaker 17: viewing choices for what to watch with your children.
- 42:02Speaker 6: Nephews and nieces.
- 42:03Speaker 17: Or the kid down the street you have to babysit
- 42:06Speaker 17: for the weekend. Are you tired of endless reruns of
- 42:08Speaker 17: Hannah Montana?
- 42:09Speaker 6: Hey, I like Hannah Montana.
- 42:10Speaker 17: Then join us for.
- 42:11Speaker 8: Family Movie Night.
- 42:12Speaker 6: You can find us on iTunes or at our website, www.fmnpodcast.com.
- 42:18Speaker 2: Bye!
- 42:30Speaker 14: Hey, this is Danielle Harris from some of the Halloween movies,
- 42:34Speaker 14: and you are listening to Movie Meltdown.
- 42:45Speaker 8: It's time for Sofa Theater.
- 42:49Speaker 7: Madre de Dios!
- 42:50Speaker 2: What are you doing?
- 42:53Speaker 1: Who are you?
- 42:54Speaker 2: Where do you come from? I said, who are you?
- 42:59Speaker 2: Put that down. What do you want? It's me, isn't it?
- 43:06Speaker 15: You're going to take advantage of me. You're going to
- 43:08Speaker 15: have your filthy way with me under the hot desert sun,
- 43:10Speaker 15: aren't you? You're going to ravage me like I've never
- 43:13Speaker 15: been ravaged before. Your hot sweat sliding over my body
- 43:17Speaker 15: as we roll in the dust. As you violate my
- 43:21Speaker 15: innermost parts. As you pound against me in orgasmic animal passion.
- 43:27Speaker 2: Oh, God. You're disgusting.
- 43:34Speaker 9: You're disgusting.
- 43:45Speaker 10: In the hot desert sun, a man's heart grows cold.
- 43:51Speaker 4: Sand-filled winds rust his soul till his heart, like a rock,
- 43:59Speaker 4: would nowhere roll but aimlessly.
- 44:04Speaker 18: On and on.
- 44:08Speaker 10: When life's been nothing but a dirty deal, And the
- 44:14Speaker 10: dirtier it gets, the better he feels.
- 44:19Speaker 18: Then he's gone too far, he'll plant no seed. He's
- 44:25Speaker 18: just a tarnished tumbleweed.
- 44:30Speaker 5: Welcome to Movie Meltdown Sofa Theater. This week's feature presentation
- 44:34Speaker 5: is the infamous Lust in the Dust. But this week's
- 44:39Speaker 5: installment also crosses over into one of my other favorite features.
- 44:43Speaker 5: It's time once again for... Yes, our running feature where
- 44:47Speaker 5: we head into the vault and dust off an old
- 44:48Speaker 5: film from someone's career and actually ask them what they
- 44:51Speaker 5: thought of making the movie. So this time we hear
- 44:54Speaker 5: from actor Courtney Gaines again, who was in Lust in
- 44:58Speaker 5: the Dust as Red Dick Barker. ah so yeah let's
- 45:04Speaker 5: see what courtney thought about being in less than the.
- 45:07Speaker 14: Dust less than the dust was was a really interesting
- 45:09Speaker 14: experience for me it was my third film uh things
- 45:12Speaker 14: will stand out are we shot in uh santa fe
- 45:16Speaker 14: new mexico which i'd never been to which was i
- 45:18Speaker 14: wish i'd bought property you know it's god's country and
- 45:22Speaker 14: beautiful all right Um, but I was just, I was
- 45:24Speaker 14: just surrounded by all these veteran actors, you know, and, um,
- 45:29Speaker 14: so I, I actually worked on it a couple weeks
- 45:31Speaker 14: and I stayed a couple more weeks just to watch
- 45:32Speaker 14: people work, you know, to watch, you know, people who've
- 45:36Speaker 14: been around, you know, for a long time, you know,
- 45:39Speaker 14: who really knew their stuff. I felt like I was
- 45:41Speaker 14: really fortunate and, uh, you know, Cesar Romero, I mean,
- 45:45Speaker 14: he was, that.
- 45:45Speaker 5: Guy was a huge star at one point, you.
- 45:48Speaker 14: Know, and, um, this guy who played Hardcase Williams, he's great,
- 45:53Speaker 14: he's in Devil's Rejects as well, Jeffrey Lewis, you know,
- 45:56Speaker 14: I mean, I grew up watching him doing any much
- 45:58Speaker 14: of what he can, any much of what he can,
- 45:59Speaker 14: he had a TV show, you know, so I was
- 46:01Speaker 14: just like, I thought he was hilarious in that film,
- 46:04Speaker 14: you know, he was my favorite actually, but so I
- 46:07Speaker 14: stayed to just watch guys that got work and soak
- 46:09Speaker 14: up what they were doing, you know, so, and then Divine,
- 46:12Speaker 14: I mean, that's just, you know, Divine was great, really
- 46:15Speaker 14: loved her, and Paul Bartell, the director, was really wonderful too,
- 46:18Speaker 14: so that was a really good experience.
- 46:20Speaker 13: Yeah, I was going to ask about Paul Martel. He
- 46:22Speaker 13: did a lot of interesting projects over the years. Yeah,
- 46:24Speaker 13: very much so. For me, he was just super encouraging.
- 46:27Speaker 13: You know, he was like a cheerleader when you were shooting, and,
- 46:31Speaker 13: you know, he'd laugh and really just egg you on
- 46:33Speaker 13: and give you confidence.
- 46:34Speaker 14: And, you know, it's nice that some directors just don't,
- 46:36Speaker 14: you can't tell whether they like what you're doing, they
- 46:38Speaker 14: don't like what you're doing. You know, they don't give
- 46:40Speaker 14: you much, and it leaves you kind of in the dark.
- 46:43Speaker 14: He wasn't that way at all. You know, you knew
- 46:45Speaker 14: what he was liking and what he wasn't.
- 46:47Speaker 2: Liking, you know.
- 46:48Speaker 14: All right.
- 46:48Speaker 1: All right.
- 46:48Speaker 5: So, Lust from the Dust. The year is 1985. Director
- 46:53Speaker 5: Paul Bartel. The plot is the shortest IMDb option here
- 46:58Speaker 5: is a group of unscrupulous characters seek buried treasure in
- 47:01Speaker 5: the Old West. That's about as basic as you can
- 47:04Speaker 5: get in this one. So, throw out the giant spoiler
- 47:07Speaker 5: alert because I'm assuming we'll ruin everything along the way here.
- 47:10Speaker 13: Yes.
- 47:10Speaker 5: So, with that out of the way, yeah, where would
- 47:14Speaker 5: you like to begin on Lust in the Dust?
- 47:16Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 47:16Speaker 6: Well, I was pretty impressed with the opening song.
- 47:20Speaker 5: Classic.
- 47:22Speaker 6: Yeah, it kind of wrote me in right then and there.
- 47:25Speaker 5: Yeah, I don't know what the thing is. All these
- 47:28Speaker 5: songs in this are very special.
- 47:30Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 47:31Speaker 5: I'm sure we'll work them all in as we go.
- 47:33Speaker 6: I actually am a little disappointed that there weren't more songs.
- 47:37Speaker 6: I was expecting it to be pretty much a full-blown musical,
- 47:40Speaker 6: which would have been awesome, but towards the end, you
- 47:43Speaker 6: know almost the middle of the movie there were no
- 47:45Speaker 6: more songs.
- 47:45Speaker 5: Yeah again it never really fully crosses over into musical
- 47:51Speaker 5: territory it's much like you know we were discussing earlier
- 47:54Speaker 5: everything is within the performance realm they are like in
- 47:58Speaker 5: this saloon and they're playing the piano and doing their
- 48:01Speaker 5: song and dance numbers so it never fully you know
- 48:04Speaker 5: turns out you know busting out like it's oklahoma or
- 48:07Speaker 5: something but yeah they work in a good number of songs.
- 48:12Speaker 6: Yeah There were a few. They were pretty ridiculous. I
- 48:18Speaker 6: wasn't sure where this movie was going to go, having
- 48:20Speaker 6: pretty much the entire cast of a John Waters movie.
- 48:24Speaker 6: I expected it to be a lot more over the top,
- 48:27Speaker 6: and I was kind of surprised. It pretty much followed
- 48:30Speaker 6: the normal pattern of any Western movie, and it definitely
- 48:34Speaker 6: had its funny and ironic parts and things like that,
- 48:37Speaker 6: but it wasn't extremely absurd.
- 48:41Speaker 5: Which I was kind of impressed with, really. I think
- 48:44Speaker 5: that's sort of why I ended up liking it. And again,
- 48:49Speaker 5: this is probably more of the time period it came out.
- 48:52Speaker 5: Because I think if they made this now, it would
- 48:55Speaker 5: be completely over the top and slapstick. And it would
- 48:58Speaker 5: fall into what most categories of comedy are at this point.
- 49:02Speaker 5: Most comedy is just Have become, you know, scary movie stuff,
- 49:06Speaker 5: which I complain about a lot. But I think this one, yeah,
- 49:09Speaker 5: there's no way they could have done it with that
- 49:11Speaker 5: just backing off. It's like it's silly and it has
- 49:14Speaker 5: moments where it's ridiculous, but it's never over the top.
- 49:18Speaker 5: Like it's not hitting you over the head with the joke.
- 49:20Speaker 5: there's still some subtlety to the humor really yeah.
- 49:23Speaker 6: It was no like Mel Brooks movie.
- 49:24Speaker 5: Which even those I mean if you go back far
- 49:27Speaker 5: enough were kind of subtle but yeah and that's what
- 49:31Speaker 5: disappointed me on his career as the years went on
- 49:33Speaker 5: is he got more and more into that and his
- 49:35Speaker 5: stuff you know post Naked Gun turned into trying to
- 49:39Speaker 5: be you know that same thing where everything was like
- 49:42Speaker 5: really ridiculous and really just completely slapped you in the
- 49:46Speaker 5: face with the joke it's like there was no subtlety
- 49:48Speaker 5: to it at all where this still sort of plays
- 49:50Speaker 5: it like if you weren't paying attention if you weren't
- 49:53Speaker 5: looking at the female lead you'd almost think this was
- 49:57Speaker 5: just a regular western on tv on a sunday afternoon
- 49:59Speaker 5: it's like it still sort of plays almost straight no
- 50:04Speaker 5: pun intended i guess there but it yeah it's I
- 50:07Speaker 5: don't know. I guess that's your main difference is Divine.
- 50:10Speaker 6: Yeah, Divine was definitely the wrench, though. Yeah.
- 50:17Speaker 5: But it's funny that you say it did sort of
- 50:19Speaker 5: feel like a standard Western because it's a parody of
- 50:22Speaker 5: Duel in the Sun, which is what the name came from.
- 50:26Speaker 5: I think it was Joseph Cotton that was in that
- 50:28Speaker 5: that used to jokingly refer to it as Lust in
- 50:30Speaker 5: the Dust. So then Tab Hunter, years later, decided that
- 50:34Speaker 5: he wanted to make Lust in the Dust. And it
- 50:37Speaker 5: was actually him that brought in Divine. He had worked
- 50:40Speaker 5: with her in Polyester and decided, you know, this is
- 50:43Speaker 5: what I want to.
- 50:43Speaker 7: Be my female lead.
- 50:44Speaker 5: I want Divine. Tab seems like a very strange guy.
- 50:48Speaker 14: Good call.
- 50:49Speaker 6: Good call, Tab.
- 50:50Speaker 5: It worked out in our favor in this movie because, yeah,
- 50:53Speaker 5: Divine's pretty awesome.
- 50:54Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 50:55Speaker 5: If you like Divine, it's one of those things.
- 50:59Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm not sure it can fall into the middle
- 51:02Speaker 5: ground on a lot of people's range.
- 51:04Speaker 2: I think.
- 51:06Speaker 6: Even for people who don't like divine and are like,
- 51:10Speaker 6: I mean, it's, it's pretty understandable that someone could not
- 51:14Speaker 6: like divine and like pink flamingos or something like that.
- 51:17Speaker 6: But I think even if you didn't know anything about
- 51:19Speaker 6: divine and you weren't like previously like disgusted or whatever
- 51:24Speaker 6: reaction someone could have, you could have, your opinion would,
- 51:30Speaker 6: just be different.
- 51:30Speaker 5: If you could get, if you could get over that,
- 51:32Speaker 5: you know, I think this one, he still plays it again,
- 51:35Speaker 5: kind of straight. And, and it's, it's still just played
- 51:38Speaker 5: sort of like a normal role.
- 51:40Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 51:40Speaker 5: They never really bring up, you know, his whole situation,
- 51:44Speaker 5: which I guess they never really do. Even the John
- 51:46Speaker 5: Waters movies, when he plays a female character, it's a
- 51:49Speaker 5: female character, but they fully, you know, commit to it
- 51:52Speaker 5: in this movie. It's a woman who, We get to
- 51:54Speaker 5: see that several times. More than you probably wanted to
- 51:58Speaker 5: on a few of them. But yeah, so it's definitely
- 52:01Speaker 5: played to that character, and she is the lead, more
- 52:05Speaker 5: or less. Well, it sort of split between her and Tam,
- 52:08Speaker 5: I guess.
- 52:09Speaker 6: Yeah, I think it's interesting because it could have been
- 52:13Speaker 6: a lot funnier. I mean, it was funny, but it
- 52:17Speaker 6: could have been more over the top. But it was
- 52:20Speaker 6: a really... subtle punch of humor just in casting devon
- 52:26Speaker 6: in the first place because it would have just been
- 52:28Speaker 6: a totally different movie had it been any other yeah.
- 52:31Speaker 5: You know like been a silly.
- 52:33Speaker 6: Western yeah why not a regular woman to play the
- 52:36Speaker 6: part of the main woman in the movie so.
- 52:39Speaker 5: Because tad hunter's kind of strange yeah.
- 52:41Speaker 6: I guess so i don't.
- 52:43Speaker 7: Know what to think of him his acting style it's
- 52:46Speaker 7: i mean.
- 52:46Speaker 5: In this one He's definitely like from from the second
- 52:50Speaker 5: you see him on screen, he's doing his version of
- 52:53Speaker 5: the man with no name. I mean, he's got the
- 52:55Speaker 5: full Eastwood outfit on. He's got the hat. He's got
- 52:58Speaker 5: the whole look going. So and he doesn't speak for
- 53:03Speaker 5: like the first 20 minutes he's on screen. He doesn't
- 53:05Speaker 5: say a word. So he's definitely, you know, drawing from
- 53:09Speaker 5: that kind of jokingly. But again, it's not that much difference.
- 53:13Speaker 5: But then as it gets further into the movie and
- 53:15Speaker 5: he does have speaking lines and he's, you know, doing
- 53:18Speaker 5: his thing, his acting's very, I don't know, how would
- 53:22Speaker 5: you put it? I don't even know what to call it, really.
- 53:27Speaker 6: I was, I never fully understood his character. I don't
- 53:30Speaker 6: think the characters, aside from Devine's character and I can't
- 53:34Speaker 6: remember the other.
- 53:36Speaker 2: Margarita. Margarita, yeah.
- 53:39Speaker 6: Most of the characters weren't developed that well. I don't
- 53:43Speaker 6: think they really are in Western, so that's pretty standard.
- 53:45Speaker 5: Yeah, they didn't spend time with him, so they didn't
- 53:47Speaker 5: bother to give him backstory or anything.
- 53:50Speaker 6: I don't think his acting was what was inconsistent, but
- 53:53Speaker 6: his character was inconsistent.
- 53:55Speaker 5: To be what is essentially the co-lead, I mean, they
- 53:59Speaker 5: really didn't put any extra work into his character, which
- 54:02Speaker 5: I guess he's supposed to be mysterious. He definitely is
- 54:05Speaker 5: in the beginning, but they never really... expand on it
- 54:08Speaker 5: at all even as you get to the end of
- 54:10Speaker 5: the movie you still don't really know anything more than
- 54:12Speaker 5: you did in the beginning yeah i.
- 54:13Speaker 6: Think it's pretty it was pretty ill-defined on whether or
- 54:18Speaker 6: not he was bad or good i mean because he
- 54:20Speaker 6: wasn't really he was kind of both and then neither
- 54:23Speaker 6: one at the same time.
- 54:23Speaker 5: Which that's another thing i noticed is this is specifically
- 54:27Speaker 5: as you get to two-thirds of the way into the
- 54:30Speaker 5: movie you don't really have any good guys left like
- 54:34Speaker 5: Tab becomes probably the closest thing, but, like, all of
- 54:37Speaker 5: our characters have crossed the line and double-crossed each other
- 54:41Speaker 5: and totally, like, kind of do a 180 on a
- 54:44Speaker 5: lot of the characters. Even the ones you were sort
- 54:46Speaker 5: of behind and thought, oh, well, maybe they'll... Everybody just
- 54:49Speaker 5: stabbed each other in the back, and you come out
- 54:52Speaker 5: with no real good guys. I mean, I guess Big
- 54:55Speaker 5: Ed's probably the closest thing to our real hero of
- 54:58Speaker 5: the movie, but... Yeah, which we can get into her.
- 55:02Speaker 5: That was actually originally, again, since you said supposed to
- 55:05Speaker 5: be the complete John Waters cast, it was supposed to
- 55:08Speaker 5: be Edie Massey, who is the egg lady from all of,
- 55:12Speaker 5: you know, the one that's in all of John Waters
- 55:15Speaker 5: movies at that point. So, yeah, it was supposed.
- 55:17Speaker 2: To be her.
- 55:18Speaker 5: I think the director and probably the producers didn't want, like,
- 55:23Speaker 5: they were still fighting the John Waters movie thing anyway.
- 55:26Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 55:27Speaker 5: So they were trying to get away from that, and
- 55:29Speaker 5: I think at that point, Edie was already not doing
- 55:31Speaker 5: so well health-wise, so they ended up not going with
- 55:34Speaker 5: her and bringing in Nedra Volz, who I'm trying to
- 55:38Speaker 5: figure out what else she was in, because she looks
- 55:39Speaker 5: really familiar. She's done a ton of TV work and
- 55:43Speaker 5: turned up in a few other movies along the way,
- 55:45Speaker 5: but not really a huge amount of stuff, or not
- 55:49Speaker 5: big recognizable stuff, just a lot of mainstream TV shows, really.
- 55:54Speaker 5: But yeah, you'll... You'll definitely recognize her when you see her.
- 55:57Speaker 5: She's been in a ton of stuff and is really
- 55:59Speaker 5: likable in that role.
- 56:00Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 56:01Speaker 5: And becomes pretty much the only likable character in the
- 56:03Speaker 5: movie as it goes on.
- 56:04Speaker 6: Yeah, I agree.
- 56:06Speaker 2: I knew it.
- 56:08Speaker 8: Just give me one excuse to kill you.
- 56:11Speaker 15: Just one. All my life I've been running around Santa
- 56:15Speaker 15: Fe with a strange birthmark on my butt.
- 56:17Speaker 19: You could have advertised in the paper or something.
- 56:19Speaker 15: I figured if I hung around Chili Verde long enough,
- 56:22Speaker 15: the other half would show up sooner or later.
- 56:25Speaker 6: But I never imagined it would be on such a
- 56:27Speaker 6: low life.
- 56:28Speaker 2: Sleazy, no good.
- 56:29Speaker 1: Shut up!
- 56:30Speaker 6: I mean, everyone had their charms, I suppose, but yeah.
- 56:35Speaker 6: You weren't really rooting. By the end of the movie,
- 56:36Speaker 6: you weren't really rooting for anybody. You're just kind of like, oh,
- 56:39Speaker 6: let's finish watching this and see what happens.
- 56:43Speaker 5: And it does wrap up in kind of a weird way.
- 56:45Speaker 5: I guess we won't totally go into it, but it
- 56:48Speaker 5: does come down to like a standoff. But it's again,
- 56:51Speaker 5: that's what is sort of making fun of of Duel
- 56:54Speaker 5: in the Sun, I think, at one point. But it
- 56:56Speaker 5: also just well, every Western movie kind of comes down
- 56:59Speaker 5: to this big standoff at the end. Only there's just
- 57:02Speaker 5: gets kind of silly and everybody shows up with guns
- 57:04Speaker 5: and they're like, all right, well, make make room. We
- 57:05Speaker 5: got more people coming in with guns to point at
- 57:07Speaker 5: each other in it. So it's sort of, you know,
- 57:10Speaker 5: before John Woo and Quentin Tarantino kind of stole this
- 57:14Speaker 5: idea of everybody in your finale pointing guns at each other,
- 57:16Speaker 5: this one was already kind of making fun of the
- 57:19Speaker 5: fact that Western's always sort of in that way, too.
- 57:21Speaker 5: So that's kind of funny.
- 57:23Speaker 6: That's what men want. That's the way they want to
- 57:25Speaker 6: see movies end. Even if it's like.
- 57:28Speaker 5: People shooting each other.
- 57:29Speaker 6: Even if it's... he's just not that into you or
- 57:31Speaker 6: something like that, that their girlfriends drag them to. They
- 57:34Speaker 6: leave the movie theater thinking, son of a bitch, nobody
- 57:38Speaker 6: pointed a gun at anyone else throughout that whole movie.
- 57:42Speaker 5: That movie, I think I would have liked to have
- 57:43Speaker 5: seen everybody shoot each other. And I haven't even seen
- 57:45Speaker 5: it yet, and don't really want to right away, but
- 57:48Speaker 5: we'll put that way down on the list. But if
- 57:51Speaker 5: there were anything that would move it up a couple
- 57:52Speaker 5: of notches, it would be in the end, everybody shoots
- 57:54Speaker 5: each other. That would be kind of awesome, actually.
- 57:57Speaker 6: I actually saw that movie in theaters. I don't know why.
- 58:00Speaker 6: It is definitely not something I'd normally see, but I'd
- 58:03Speaker 6: read the book. And that's normally not a book I
- 58:06Speaker 6: would read. I think I must have been going through
- 58:09Speaker 6: a hard time or something. But actually, it was a
- 58:14Speaker 6: guy that suggested that we go see that movie. So
- 58:18Speaker 6: I was kind of like, don't you want to? Watch
- 58:21Speaker 6: something a little bit more manly.
- 58:23Speaker 5: Sometimes that's a maneuver. You've got to watch that. Guys
- 58:26Speaker 5: start suggesting chick flicks. They're up to something.
- 58:29Speaker 6: Yes.
- 58:31Speaker 5: I did want to go into the director. They went
- 58:35Speaker 5: through this whole thing. They actually at one point asked
- 58:37Speaker 5: John Waters to do it and he didn't want to
- 58:39Speaker 5: do it because he didn't write it. He has and
- 58:43Speaker 5: has always done pretty much I do my own projects.
- 58:47Speaker 5: He doesn't really cover other people's work. So he specifically,
- 58:51Speaker 5: and I think they didn't, I don't know if they
- 58:54Speaker 5: set out with it as, you know, him in mind.
- 58:56Speaker 5: I know Tab was the one that actually conceived the
- 58:59Speaker 5: project and worked on it for several years and he
- 59:01Speaker 5: brought Divine in. So I don't know if it's something
- 59:03Speaker 5: that they wanted or they were just kind of going
- 59:05Speaker 5: with that at the time. But I think as soon
- 59:07Speaker 5: as it hit that point, they really wanted to get
- 59:09Speaker 5: away from it.
- 59:10Speaker 2: That.
- 59:10Speaker 5: So they actually went with Paul Bartel, who actually directed
- 59:15Speaker 5: one of my favorite movies of all time. He is
- 59:18Speaker 5: the man who directed Death Race 2000.
- 59:19Speaker 6: Oh, I didn't know that.
- 59:21Speaker 2: Man, I love him.
- 59:23Speaker 5: It's so well done. And it's exploitation way it's definitely
- 59:28Speaker 5: got roger corman's hands all over it but um yeah
- 59:31Speaker 5: definitely it you can tell he he's got he spent
- 59:35Speaker 5: his career basically making these these weird off the beaten
- 59:38Speaker 5: path kind of movies and everything he did i mean
- 59:41Speaker 5: i guess the most mainstream thing he was known for
- 59:43Speaker 5: is uh he did eating raul it sort of crossed
- 59:47Speaker 5: over see he directed that one too So he's done
- 59:51Speaker 5: nothing but weird projects his whole career. So it's no
- 59:54Speaker 5: surprise that he's involved in this one. And they did say,
- 59:58Speaker 5: talking to him, that it was one of those that
- 1:00:00Speaker 5: they offered it to him, and he kind of thought
- 1:00:02Speaker 5: about it, and he was like, well, it's my chance
- 1:00:04Speaker 5: to do a Western. A Western in widescreen format. That's
- 1:00:08Speaker 5: a chance of a lifetime. So even if it's one
- 1:00:10Speaker 5: with Divine in the middle of it, you've got to
- 1:00:12Speaker 5: go for it. And it sort of fits his sense
- 1:00:16Speaker 5: of humor in directing sort of fits the way that
- 1:00:19Speaker 5: this movie came together anyway. So, yeah, I thought that
- 1:00:23Speaker 5: was kind of interesting. And I do want to go
- 1:00:25Speaker 5: back and watch a lot more of what he did
- 1:00:27Speaker 5: because everything he did was very strange and took its
- 1:00:31Speaker 5: own weird little paths. I definitely want to check out
- 1:00:34Speaker 5: more of Paul Bartel's stuff.
- 1:00:37Speaker 15: Oh, yay, though I walk through the valley of the
- 1:00:39Speaker 15: shadow of, through the shadow of Death Valley.
- 1:00:42Speaker 8: Oh, Christ, I used to know it.
- 1:00:44Speaker 6: Well, from the beginning of the movie, going in, the
- 1:00:47Speaker 6: initial theme song, which I was so impressed by, which was,
- 1:00:51Speaker 6: I think it's worth watching just to hear that theme
- 1:00:55Speaker 6: song to either agree or disagree with me. But in
- 1:00:59Speaker 6: my mind, I'd already expected it to be a lot
- 1:01:02Speaker 6: like Cannibal the Musical, or anything by Trey or Matt
- 1:01:07Speaker 6: from South Park, just because of the initial theme song
- 1:01:11Speaker 6: reminded me so much.
- 1:01:12Speaker 5: Of Mostly Trey.
- 1:01:14Speaker 15: Yeah.
- 1:01:15Speaker 2: Trey's a genius.
- 1:01:15Speaker 13: Yeah.
- 1:01:16Speaker 5: Matt's lucky.
- 1:01:17Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:01:18Speaker 5: Matt has a good friend.
- 1:01:20Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 1:01:23Speaker 6: I can't explain. I can't put my finger exactly on, well,
- 1:01:27Speaker 6: I mean, just the ridiculousness of the song. And I
- 1:01:32Speaker 6: think what it is really is how, like, they're so
- 1:01:36Speaker 6: clever and uncanny at imitating something.
- 1:01:39Speaker 7: Oh, yeah.
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:01:40Speaker 5: Trey is, and I've said this before, he's a genius
- 1:01:44Speaker 5: at mimicking other people's music. But to me, he's so
- 1:01:48Speaker 5: good at writing songs and writing them in ways that work.
- 1:01:53Speaker 5: Work on this pop culture level that you don't even
- 1:01:57Speaker 5: realize it's a joke. It's that close to the real thing.
- 1:02:00Speaker 6: Yeah, that's what I always like about them. They're joke songs,
- 1:02:04Speaker 6: but they're not exactly parodies.
- 1:02:07Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:02:07Speaker 6: And I mean, I think... an average person wouldn't really
- 1:02:11Speaker 6: understand what's so funny about it.
- 1:02:13Speaker 5: It's parodying the style, not like ripping off specific songs.
- 1:02:17Speaker 5: It's parodying the cheesiness of a general style of song.
- 1:02:21Speaker 5: And like he pinpoints it every time. Like there's so
- 1:02:24Speaker 5: many different versions of that, that he's done. And yet
- 1:02:27Speaker 5: it's like so accurate every time. And the opening song
- 1:02:30Speaker 5: on this one is really, really close to that. It's again,
- 1:02:33Speaker 5: kind of making fun of the, the old Westerns, but,
- 1:02:35Speaker 5: but it does it, just.
- 1:02:37Speaker 7: To shade off.
- 1:02:38Speaker 5: It's like, you're listening, and then, like, the lyrics are silly,
- 1:02:42Speaker 5: and the style that they're singing it in is a
- 1:02:44Speaker 5: little over the top, so that sort of, that tips
- 1:02:47Speaker 5: you off, but at the same time, it's like, once again,
- 1:02:50Speaker 5: if you're not paying attention, you're just like, what's this
- 1:02:51Speaker 5: weird western coming on?
- 1:02:52Speaker 14: Yeah.
- 1:02:53Speaker 5: Yeah, it's very, it's a fine line, really.
- 1:02:57Speaker 6: And the whole movie was, I'd say it followed in
- 1:03:00Speaker 6: line pretty close to, like, the one I kept comparing
- 1:03:03Speaker 6: it to, probably, mostly because of the western style of it,
- 1:03:06Speaker 6: but Cannibal the Musical. There was less musical numbers in it, unfortunately.
- 1:03:11Speaker 5: It's not near as over the top. Cannibal is very in-your-face-with-the-jokes,
- 1:03:16Speaker 5: where this is a lot more kind of... It just
- 1:03:18Speaker 5: takes it back a couple of notches.
- 1:03:20Speaker 7: Yeah, it does.
- 1:03:22Speaker 6: But it's just like I can imagine that maybe somewhere
- 1:03:25Speaker 6: along the lines I'd seen that.
- 1:03:27Speaker 5: It wouldn't surprise me. I mean, we know Trey's sense
- 1:03:31Speaker 5: of humor, so I'm sure this was something he probably was...
- 1:03:35Speaker 5: Would have gladly watched Daddy Knot, but I'm sure he did,
- 1:03:38Speaker 5: knowing the way he is. I was just trying to
- 1:03:41Speaker 5: think of some of the other weird things they work in.
- 1:03:43Speaker 5: We get our motley crew of cowboys at the beginning there.
- 1:03:46Speaker 5: We get the group of everybody. We've got the main,
- 1:03:51Speaker 5: I guess, sort of villain. We start off with one
- 1:03:54Speaker 5: that could be the villain, and then it switches gears, really.
- 1:03:58Speaker 6: There weren't really, I mean, we've already said this, but
- 1:04:01Speaker 6: there was no.
- 1:04:02Speaker 5: Well, the way they set it up. I mean, playing
- 1:04:04Speaker 5: on the Western theme, you know, the bad guy. As
- 1:04:08Speaker 5: he gets into the town, it's Henry Silva, which, you know,
- 1:04:11Speaker 5: genre favorite that he is. And basically, it's Henry Silva
- 1:04:15Speaker 5: doing his best Ricardo Bantoban. His, like, accent was very,
- 1:04:20Speaker 5: very typing into the Ricardo style that he did pretty
- 1:04:24Speaker 5: much his entire career.
- 1:04:27Speaker 8: That's better, huh? You ride in here with your woman?
- 1:04:31Speaker 8: We hardly know each other.
- 1:04:32Speaker 5: So yeah, it sort of starts.
- 1:04:37Speaker 8: With him and he seems like he's going to be
- 1:04:38Speaker 8: the villain and then switches gears and we get back.
- 1:04:41Speaker 16: To the character they introduced earlier is Jeffrey Lewis.
- 1:05:00Speaker 5: Who's been in everything. Like he's, but yeah, lately you'll
- 1:05:03Speaker 5: recognize he's in, um, devil's rejects and he's in the
- 1:05:07Speaker 5: band that they, uh, break in on at the motel.
- 1:05:09Speaker 5: So he's been in a million other things before that,
- 1:05:13Speaker 5: you know who he is anyway, but yeah, he's sort
- 1:05:15Speaker 5: of the leader of that group. But then you've got
- 1:05:17Speaker 5: like the Mexican guy, you've got the, the Chinaman, I
- 1:05:21Speaker 5: guess that they would have thrown out that title then
- 1:05:22Speaker 5: not so PC now, but As many as they brought
- 1:05:25Speaker 5: in to work on the railroad. I guess that's our
- 1:05:27Speaker 5: excuse why we get the Chinese guy there. We get
- 1:05:30Speaker 5: a black guy, which that too was recognized. That's Woody Strode,
- 1:05:34Speaker 5: who we just saw in Kingdom of the Spiders. He's
- 1:05:37Speaker 5: another one that's in a ton of genre stuff. But yeah,
- 1:05:40Speaker 5: Woody Strode's wearing a fur coat, which I thought was awesome.
- 1:05:44Speaker 7: You got the brother in this big pimped out.
- 1:05:46Speaker 5: Fur coat the whole time out in the West in
- 1:05:49Speaker 5: the sun wearing a fur coat all day. And then
- 1:05:52Speaker 5: we have a midget on a horse and on a
- 1:05:54Speaker 5: midget horse too.
- 1:05:56Speaker 6: I didn't notice that.
- 1:05:57Speaker 4: Oh yeah.
- 1:05:58Speaker 5: He's, he's the, the fifth member of the crew there. Awesome. Oh,
- 1:06:04Speaker 5: we also, uh, they also had Caesar Romero is the, uh,
- 1:06:07Speaker 5: the priest, which was kind of huge. Like that was
- 1:06:10Speaker 5: their real name and, and sort of their claim to
- 1:06:12Speaker 5: fame at that point. I mean, it's, it almost legitimized
- 1:06:15Speaker 5: this project. It's, Everything else up until then could have
- 1:06:19Speaker 5: just been written off as a weird little B-movie and
- 1:06:22Speaker 5: some sort of Waters kind of movie. But bringing in
- 1:06:25Speaker 5: a pretty recognizable name like Cesar Romero is pretty awesome.
- 1:06:28Speaker 5: And it's funny that Divine was, like, really, like, so
- 1:06:34Speaker 5: starstruck almost. Like, his mother loved Cesar Romero. So, like,
- 1:06:38Speaker 5: he's sitting there and the quote from him is like,
- 1:06:41Speaker 5: I'm an amateur compared to this guy.
- 1:06:43Speaker 7: You know, how could I even be in the same
- 1:06:44Speaker 7: movie with him?
- 1:06:45Speaker 5: So... It's funny to think even Divine got that way
- 1:06:48Speaker 5: about somebody, you know, so sitting there with Cesar Romero
- 1:06:51Speaker 5: being kind of freaked out. That's so awesome to think about.
- 1:06:55Speaker 6: Yes.
- 1:06:57Speaker 11: Oh, Rosie, I wanted you from the moment I laid
- 1:07:00Speaker 11: eyes on you.
- 1:07:01Speaker 12: You are gorgeous.
- 1:07:02Speaker 8: Save the speeches, honey.
- 1:07:03Speaker 19: I am Juliet, and you certainly ain't Romeo.
- 1:07:07Speaker 8: Ooh, what a body. At least you're awake.
- 1:07:12Speaker 5: Oh, Rosie, you got everything a man could want.
- 1:07:15Speaker 8: Well, let's see if you have what I want.
- 1:07:19Speaker 5: And then we have Courtney. Courtney has red dick.
- 1:07:23Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:07:25Speaker 6: I think he, I mean, next to Big Ed, of course.
- 1:07:29Speaker 6: Probably my second favorite character. I mean, I really hate
- 1:07:32Speaker 6: to say that. I always want. You know, if Divine's
- 1:07:35Speaker 6: in a movie, that should be my number one favorite character.
- 1:07:38Speaker 5: Divine's not really likable in this. And most movies, really.
- 1:07:41Speaker 5: It's funny. Divine's a weird character because you... Well, I
- 1:07:45Speaker 5: guess Divine in and of itself is a character, really.
- 1:07:48Speaker 6: Yeah, of course.
- 1:07:49Speaker 2: But, yeah, when.
- 1:07:51Speaker 5: I almost, it's a shame that, you know, he has
- 1:07:53Speaker 5: passed on now, because he's one of those I kind
- 1:07:54Speaker 5: of would have liked to have seen him, like, sit
- 1:07:57Speaker 5: down with him for a little while and talk to
- 1:07:59Speaker 5: this guy, because he seems like a fascinating person. Like,
- 1:08:02Speaker 5: what I've, you know, gathered over the years of hearing
- 1:08:04Speaker 5: about him, it's like, everybody that talks about him when
- 1:08:07Speaker 5: he's himself, when he is, you know, in his normal character, he's, like,
- 1:08:11Speaker 5: soft-spoken and almost shy and very intelligent and just... It
- 1:08:16Speaker 5: would be so amazing to see him in that mode because,
- 1:08:19Speaker 5: I mean, you get pictures, but you don't see a
- 1:08:21Speaker 5: lot of footage of him not as divine. So it
- 1:08:23Speaker 5: would have been kind of interesting to actually see him
- 1:08:26Speaker 5: in the real world in that mode. But it's funny
- 1:08:29Speaker 5: how much it turns on. And that's what they said.
- 1:08:31Speaker 5: It's like when he got in the costume, he was
- 1:08:34Speaker 5: just loud and obnoxious and became an entirely different character,
- 1:08:37Speaker 5: which I know for a lot of guys that, you know,
- 1:08:40Speaker 5: when you do the cross-dressing thing, it is you're tapping
- 1:08:43Speaker 5: into some sort of character that's inside of you, so
- 1:08:46Speaker 5: it is very much, you know, that's kind of how
- 1:08:48Speaker 5: that works, but it is funny to see just what
- 1:08:51Speaker 5: a difference it was, and he always kind of plays
- 1:08:54Speaker 5: that version, you know, and I mean, he still is divine, basically,
- 1:08:58Speaker 5: that's just, and that's does play a character whereas you
- 1:09:01Speaker 5: get in the early john water stuff he's he's just
- 1:09:03Speaker 5: divine he is himself.
- 1:09:05Speaker 6: Well they were just kind of winging.
- 1:09:07Speaker 5: It yeah i mean john water stuff He just turned
- 1:09:10Speaker 5: the camera on. Go over there and do something.
- 1:09:13Speaker 6: Go do some crazy shit. Seriously. Stuff that no other
- 1:09:17Speaker 6: human being on the face of the earth would do.
- 1:09:19Speaker 2: You go out.
- 1:09:20Speaker 6: There and you do it.
- 1:09:21Speaker 7: And Divine gladly did it.
- 1:09:23Speaker 6: That's a friend. That's a fucking friend.
- 1:09:25Speaker 5: That is, yeah, definitely a trooper as the actors go.
- 1:09:28Speaker 5: Because most people would not put up with the kind
- 1:09:30Speaker 5: of shit that he had to do in those early movies. No.
- 1:09:33Speaker 6: I mean, as much as I love, love, love John Waters,
- 1:09:37Speaker 6: I don't think I could be his friend. That's going
- 1:09:39Speaker 6: a little too much.
- 1:09:41Speaker 5: Oh, once again, I think I want to hang out.
- 1:09:43Speaker 5: I want to go to his house. Mostly I want
- 1:09:44Speaker 5: to look at his house because his house seems awesome.
- 1:09:47Speaker 6: You know, it does seem awesome. And actually, it's really
- 1:09:51Speaker 6: funny because this movie made me think of this. I
- 1:09:55Speaker 6: did this project once for school where I had to
- 1:09:59Speaker 6: pick a celebrity and design their bedroom. And I picked
- 1:10:03Speaker 6: John Waters. And everyone in my class is like, I
- 1:10:07Speaker 6: don't know who.
- 1:10:08Speaker 5: What?
- 1:10:09Speaker 6: John Waters is, I mean, there were like five people
- 1:10:11Speaker 6: in my class, but no one knew. And I was like,
- 1:10:13Speaker 6: he directed Hairspray. They're like, oh, and I'm like, not
- 1:10:16Speaker 6: that Hairspray, different Hairspray. And then my teacher, of course,
- 1:10:18Speaker 6: he's like, oh my God, yes, I know John Waters.
- 1:10:20Speaker 6: I loved his films in college. Of course, he's like
- 1:10:22Speaker 6: this tiny, adorable gay man. So of course he knows
- 1:10:26Speaker 6: who John Waters is.
- 1:10:27Speaker 2: Yeah, sure.
- 1:10:28Speaker 13: Yeah.
- 1:10:28Speaker 6: But he was like, didn't he direct Lust in the Dust?
- 1:10:32Speaker 6: And I was like, no.
- 1:10:34Speaker 5: Which is what everybody says. Yeah. Yeah. Which is, I mean,
- 1:10:37Speaker 5: it's funny how much, you know, they were saying Paul Bartel, like,
- 1:10:40Speaker 5: went out of his way to make it. He didn't
- 1:10:42Speaker 5: want to be seen as, like, this movie to be
- 1:10:44Speaker 5: a ripoff. It's like he really wanted to go out
- 1:10:46Speaker 5: of his way to make it his own movie and
- 1:10:48Speaker 5: just to make it something different than the John Waters thing,
- 1:10:50Speaker 5: which I think it is, really. I mean, aside from
- 1:10:53Speaker 5: those two actors. Which I guess at the time was
- 1:10:56Speaker 5: really weird because I think this was the first time
- 1:10:58Speaker 5: Divine had worked outside of a John Waters movie. He
- 1:11:01Speaker 5: did later as years went on, but at this point
- 1:11:04Speaker 5: that was the only thing he was known for. So
- 1:11:06Speaker 5: it was going to be a weird transition for people, but...
- 1:11:08Speaker 5: I'm just trying to think what else we had here.
- 1:11:11Speaker 5: We had many, many shots of Divine falling off a horse.
- 1:11:15Speaker 7: There were at least three different.
- 1:11:17Speaker 5: That became its own little running gag of watching Divine
- 1:11:20Speaker 5: ride a horse, which is funny in itself. I don't
- 1:11:22Speaker 5: think it.
- 1:11:22Speaker 6: I think it was a double.
- 1:11:23Speaker 5: I think most of the time. A lot of that stuff.
- 1:11:25Speaker 5: The fight scenes were completely a double.
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 1:11:29Speaker 5: Well, they said that.
- 1:11:29Speaker 7: It was funny.
- 1:11:30Speaker 5: It was like they were talking about how Divine really
- 1:11:32Speaker 5: is sort of fragile. They were like, you know, you
- 1:11:35Speaker 5: wouldn't necessarily think that. He's a big guy.
- 1:11:38Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:11:38Speaker 5: But then, you know, just, I guess, you know, as his...
- 1:11:41Speaker 5: personality comes out he's still very you know delicate and
- 1:11:44Speaker 5: you know he doesn't want to do that and he
- 1:11:46Speaker 5: you know he gets really upset about stuff it's uh
- 1:11:49Speaker 5: it was funny i'm assuming shooting this had to be
- 1:11:51Speaker 5: really difficult because they are out in the desert they're
- 1:11:54Speaker 5: shooting fight scenes and scenes on the horseback and all
- 1:11:56Speaker 5: this other stuff so they probably did have to work
- 1:11:59Speaker 5: around a lot of his his weird little idiosyncrasy yeah
- 1:12:04Speaker 5: what else we do have a chick fight kind.
- 1:12:06Speaker 6: Of sort of sort of Well, I guess if you count.
- 1:12:11Speaker 7: Character-wise.
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:12:12Speaker 6: Well, it was more than just one chick. There were
- 1:12:17Speaker 6: actually four chicks.
- 1:12:18Speaker 7: They worked in a couple, yeah.
- 1:12:19Speaker 6: At one point. So you can count, like, the fight
- 1:12:21Speaker 6: between Marguerite and Big Ed.
- 1:12:24Speaker 13: Yeah, there.
- 1:12:24Speaker 6: Also, what was the.
- 1:12:26Speaker 5: The bartender girl.
- 1:12:27Speaker 6: Yeah, what was her name? Nima or Niva or something.
- 1:12:29Speaker 5: I think what it was.
- 1:12:30Speaker 2: Yeah, Nifa. Nifa.
- 1:12:32Speaker 7: Nifa.
- 1:12:33Speaker 5: Gina Gallego. again i've seen pictures of now she's held
- 1:12:38Speaker 5: up really well actually surprisingly but yeah marguerite is a
- 1:12:41Speaker 5: laney kazan who's been in a ton of stuff as
- 1:12:44Speaker 5: well originally it was supposed to be again as tab
- 1:12:48Speaker 5: came up with this grand scheme it was supposed to
- 1:12:50Speaker 5: be him divine and chiquita rivera that would be awesome
- 1:12:54Speaker 5: that's what it in his mind is how the third
- 1:12:57Speaker 5: in the cast should have been but i think she
- 1:13:00Speaker 5: was on broadway at the time so they brought in
- 1:13:01Speaker 5: laney instead so Again, that's not too far off, really.
- 1:13:07Speaker 5: She actually almost plays it probably better than I can
- 1:13:09Speaker 5: picture Chiquita. Because the Lainey is a hell of a
- 1:13:12Speaker 5: lot tougher, I can see.
- 1:13:14Speaker 7: She really does.
- 1:13:15Speaker 5: She's in there. She owns a bar. She's drinking and
- 1:13:19Speaker 5: smoking cigars and fighting the whole time. So she definitely
- 1:13:22Speaker 5: plays it as a pretty tough chick. And I think
- 1:13:26Speaker 5: it would have been kind of hard imagining Chiquita in there.
- 1:13:29Speaker 6: Okay, it's pretty obvious from the get-go. So I'm just
- 1:13:33Speaker 6: going to throw this out there. Spoiler alert. But, you know,
- 1:13:36Speaker 6: towards the end of the movie, when they revealed that
- 1:13:38Speaker 6: Marguerite and Rosie were sisters, I was, you know, like
- 1:13:44Speaker 6: in my mind, I was like, that's totally believable. And
- 1:13:47Speaker 6: not just in the context of the movie, but in
- 1:13:49Speaker 6: the real world.
- 1:13:51Speaker 5: You actually said something to that like early in the movie.
- 1:13:53Speaker 5: You were like, they look just like each other.
- 1:13:55Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:13:56Speaker 5: And they kind of i mean they set out to
- 1:13:59Speaker 5: kind of make them that way obviously but it is
- 1:14:01Speaker 5: it's funny they were talking just makeup wise they brought
- 1:14:04Speaker 5: in like one of the big makeup producers and how
- 1:14:06Speaker 5: he had worked on like maryland and all these other
- 1:14:08Speaker 5: stars and they were like okay now make divine look like.
- 1:14:11Speaker 6: Her that has to be like a really fun challenge i.
- 1:14:14Speaker 5: Guess so especially since he has narcolepsy they said he
- 1:14:18Speaker 5: would fall asleep in the chair So his head would
- 1:14:21Speaker 5: be resting on his fake bosoms, and they had to
- 1:14:24Speaker 5: devise this, like, sling to keep his head in when
- 1:14:27Speaker 5: he was in the makeup chair so that that way
- 1:14:29Speaker 5: when he falls asleep midway through, he could still work
- 1:14:33Speaker 5: on his face.
- 1:14:33Speaker 6: You know, it's like earlier I was saying what a
- 1:14:36Speaker 6: good friend Devon was to John Waters for doing what
- 1:14:39Speaker 6: he asked, but then again, it's just like, who else
- 1:14:42Speaker 6: is going to hire Devon? It kind of seems like
- 1:14:44Speaker 6: a handful.
- 1:14:44Speaker 2: Yeah, kind of.
- 1:14:46Speaker 5: But again, I think that's probably the make or break
- 1:14:49Speaker 5: on this movie is Divine. Because it's one of those.
- 1:14:52Speaker 5: Watching Divine over the years has grown on me so much.
- 1:14:55Speaker 5: I think the first time was really the first big
- 1:14:58Speaker 5: movie for Waters was the Pink Flamingos. I think that
- 1:15:01Speaker 5: was probably the first time I'd seen.
- 1:15:03Speaker 8: I.
- 1:15:03Speaker 5: Don't remember if I actually watched Hairspray. So probably the
- 1:15:07Speaker 5: first time was going back and in the theater, frighteningly enough,
- 1:15:10Speaker 5: seeing Pink Flamingos.
- 1:15:12Speaker 15: And.
- 1:15:13Speaker 5: since then seen a lot of other stuff and I've
- 1:15:15Speaker 5: really gotten the light. Like I really liked divine and
- 1:15:18Speaker 5: it's weird again because it's divine herself is not really
- 1:15:22Speaker 5: a likable character is kind of obnoxious and over the top.
- 1:15:27Speaker 6: I think, I think she was able to refine her
- 1:15:30Speaker 6: character and her, and definitely her acting. Cause I mean,
- 1:15:33Speaker 6: if you think like by.
- 1:15:34Speaker 5: Hairspray, Well, I was thinking back to the one I
- 1:15:38Speaker 5: really liked, because I was comparing it with the other
- 1:15:41Speaker 5: tab hunter, which was Polyester. She's kind of likable in Polyester.
- 1:15:46Speaker 5: She really does become more of a regular character. In
- 1:15:50Speaker 5: Pink Flamingo, she is just chewing up the scenery. That
- 1:15:54Speaker 5: was still so early. It was just, turn the camera on, Divine,
- 1:15:57Speaker 5: and go. But yeah, by Polyester and getting into this,
- 1:16:00Speaker 5: she was starting to... He was developing... her as a
- 1:16:04Speaker 5: character and him as an actor and kind of, you know,
- 1:16:06Speaker 5: meshing the two into this new version. So I think, yeah,
- 1:16:10Speaker 5: definitely got better as the years went by. But to me,
- 1:16:13Speaker 5: there's just something about him, I guess, as an actor,
- 1:16:16Speaker 5: because I still haven't seen the later stuff. Like the
- 1:16:18Speaker 5: very last role, he was actually playing a man. And
- 1:16:21Speaker 5: so I kind of would like to see him playing himself.
- 1:16:25Speaker 6: Yeah, I'm picturing Devon as a man, and I can't
- 1:16:29Speaker 6: remember what movie it is. What movie is it?
- 1:16:32Speaker 5: Uh, the last one he was in, I know he
- 1:16:34Speaker 5: played a man, and it is.
- 1:16:36Speaker 6: I mean, in Hairspray, he did both, right?
- 1:16:40Speaker 5: See, I haven't watched the first one in so long.
- 1:16:43Speaker 6: I mean, I might be wrong. I'm probably totally wrong
- 1:16:46Speaker 6: because it's been a long time, but I'm thinking he
- 1:16:47Speaker 6: played Tracy Turnblad's dad and mom or something.
- 1:16:51Speaker 2: Yeah, maybe.
- 1:16:52Speaker 5: There were, like, arvin yeah he.
- 1:16:55Speaker 6: Was the person that uh ran hefty hideaway yeah.
- 1:16:58Speaker 5: He's listed as arvin and edna but yeah out of
- 1:17:01Speaker 5: the dark was the movie right the year after hairspray
- 1:17:03Speaker 5: and the last one he did he plays a detective
- 1:17:06Speaker 5: and was you know a man but yeah i think
- 1:17:09Speaker 5: just in general he became i don't know there's just
- 1:17:13Speaker 5: something about him and i i guess again it's whether
- 1:17:16Speaker 5: you like it or not and i think over the
- 1:17:17Speaker 5: years he's become very just i don't know what it
- 1:17:21Speaker 5: is there's some sort of mystique about him that you
- 1:17:23Speaker 5: know if you tap into it it really is sort
- 1:17:26Speaker 5: of what sells this movie and it's the one thing
- 1:17:28Speaker 5: that sort of divides it from just being another random
- 1:17:31Speaker 5: western that was trying to be a comedy which there
- 1:17:34Speaker 5: were a few at that point that you know were
- 1:17:36Speaker 5: trying to cross that line and be comedy and western
- 1:17:39Speaker 5: so it's you know there were Trying to think what else.
- 1:17:42Speaker 6: What would you call that? Since everyone has that weird obsession.
- 1:17:45Speaker 6: I'd do it too.
- 1:17:46Speaker 2: I don't know why.
- 1:17:47Speaker 6: When you like mesh two words together, would it be
- 1:17:49Speaker 6: a question?
- 1:17:51Speaker 5: Yikes. I hate when they do that.
- 1:17:54Speaker 6: Because I mean, yeah, that's as good as I can
- 1:17:58Speaker 6: come up with. I'm running on not very many hours
- 1:18:02Speaker 6: of sleep.
- 1:18:03Speaker 5: Though so i was trying to think what i mean
- 1:18:06Speaker 5: they had several i think it was the outlaw that
- 1:18:08Speaker 5: was the one that had like kirk douglas in it
- 1:18:11Speaker 5: and schwarzenegger and it was like completely like tapping into
- 1:18:15Speaker 5: the cartoon end of it and then you had like
- 1:18:17Speaker 5: blazing saddles right before this i mean there was definitely
- 1:18:20Speaker 5: a run of ones that were you know kind of
- 1:18:23Speaker 5: trying to go into that territory but yeah this this
- 1:18:27Speaker 5: is definitely its own breed and i think that's what
- 1:18:29Speaker 5: it is is the divine part of it because i
- 1:18:32Speaker 5: If it were just Tad by himself and a couple
- 1:18:34Speaker 5: of actresses, I think it would be a very different movie.
- 1:18:36Speaker 6: It definitely would. Westerns always make me really hungry. I
- 1:18:40Speaker 6: don't know why, but I remember going to friends' houses
- 1:18:45Speaker 6: when I was younger and their dads would be watching
- 1:18:48Speaker 6: Westerns and I would have to sit there and be
- 1:18:51Speaker 6: subjected to it and I hated it more than anything.
- 1:18:53Speaker 6: And I would just think, oh my god, I'm so hungry.
- 1:18:56Speaker 6: Which is why I had to order a pizza to
- 1:18:59Speaker 6: watch this movie.
- 1:19:00Speaker 5: That's true.
- 1:19:00Speaker 6: I did.
- 1:19:01Speaker 7: Midway through, we pause for.
- 1:19:03Speaker 5: The pizza guy.
- 1:19:04Speaker 6: I can't explain it.
- 1:19:06Speaker 5: That's very strange.
- 1:19:07Speaker 6: I know it's so weird i don't i have no
- 1:19:10Speaker 6: it's some weird psychological thing i associate westerns with food.
- 1:19:13Speaker 5: Oh yeah so yeah it's the villain greg douglas and
- 1:19:19Speaker 5: uh arnold schwarzenegger yeah that's the one i was thinking
- 1:19:22Speaker 5: oh yeah rc gorman did the tattoos really yeah southwestern
- 1:19:27Speaker 5: artist like that's kind of huge in that in that
- 1:19:30Speaker 5: uh world why he would do tattoos on their ass
- 1:19:34Speaker 5: and they're not even good really they're badlies it almost
- 1:19:38Speaker 5: looked like you know you got an extra standing around
- 1:19:40Speaker 5: to go draw on their ass yeah yeah oh which
- 1:19:44Speaker 5: by the way we as stated earlier we do see
- 1:19:46Speaker 5: divine's ass a lot and in theory her boobs but
- 1:19:51Speaker 5: i'm pretty sure that was a double.
- 1:19:52Speaker 7: When were their boobs i don't remember uh see that
- 1:19:55Speaker 7: was the midget you weren't.
- 1:19:55Speaker 6: Paying attention you were multitasking.
- 1:19:58Speaker 5: I believe that's the term yeah yeah You have attention
- 1:20:03Speaker 5: deficit disorder.
- 1:20:04Speaker 4: I do.
- 1:20:05Speaker 5: I do.
- 1:20:05Speaker 6: It's just developed lately. I don't know why.
- 1:20:07Speaker 5: I blame iPhone.
- 1:20:09Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 1:20:10Speaker 6: Yeah, I can't do anything without, like, playing Scrabble or
- 1:20:14Speaker 6: doing something.
- 1:20:14Speaker 2: It's absurd.
- 1:20:16Speaker 6: Yep.
- 1:20:16Speaker 5: The bastards at iPhone. I blame them all.
- 1:20:18Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:20:19Speaker 6: I mean, soon... I mean, I think it might be
- 1:20:23Speaker 6: good because then people will be able to lead more
- 1:20:26Speaker 6: productive lives or not. Because in my mind, I'm like,
- 1:20:30Speaker 6: look at how productive I am. I can watch a
- 1:20:32Speaker 6: movie and text at the same time. But, you know,
- 1:20:35Speaker 6: those aren't really two necessary things. So it's not like
- 1:20:38Speaker 6: I can, you know, do trigonometry and. solve world hunger simultaneously.
- 1:20:45Speaker 6: So it's really just in my mind that I've become
- 1:20:48Speaker 6: a more productive person. I'm sure it's the opposite.
- 1:20:51Speaker 5: Yeah, I think really we're just eventually going to be
- 1:20:53Speaker 5: cheating ourselves out of every individual act. We're not going
- 1:20:57Speaker 5: to have any that are actually satisfying or doing what
- 1:21:00Speaker 5: we set out to do, really. We're just going to
- 1:21:01Speaker 5: have like five things going at once and they'll all
- 1:21:04Speaker 5: be kind of half-assed. So that's what it's coming to.
- 1:21:07Speaker 6: And then robots can take over.
- 1:21:09Speaker 8: That's bound to happen anyway.
- 1:21:11Speaker 16: But I mean.
- 1:21:12Speaker 6: The Robot Revolution will be welcomed, at least.
- 1:21:15Speaker 5: Fire up Skynet.
- 1:21:16Speaker 13: Yep.
- 1:21:17Speaker 5: All right, so is there anything else to round out
- 1:21:19Speaker 5: the Lust in the Dust discussion?
- 1:21:21Speaker 6: I don't think so.
- 1:21:24Speaker 5: I think that's what it is. I think if you're
- 1:21:26Speaker 5: okay with Divine, that's probably the dividing line. If you
- 1:21:29Speaker 5: like her sense of humor, really. And Paul Bartel. I mean,
- 1:21:35Speaker 5: I still think just directing-wise, it's pretty funny, and I
- 1:21:38Speaker 5: think the fact that it backs off and doesn't really...
- 1:21:42Speaker 5: try to go towards the John Waters part. I think
- 1:21:44Speaker 5: that's almost, again, kind of creative on his part, and
- 1:21:47Speaker 5: finding a different way to do it is really cool.
- 1:21:50Speaker 5: So I just think Paul Bottell does some cool stuff,
- 1:21:53Speaker 5: so I want to seek out more of his. But yeah,
- 1:21:57Speaker 5: it's an interesting Western, to put it mildly. So yeah,
- 1:22:01Speaker 5: check it out if you feel you're up to it.
- 1:22:04Speaker 5: I could tell, I definitely knew we made the right
- 1:22:07Speaker 5: call by not... bringing this one in on everybody because
- 1:22:10Speaker 5: i could tell about 30 seconds into the movie that
- 1:22:12Speaker 5: misty would have been ready to kill people i.
- 1:22:15Speaker 6: Really just think misty dislikes westerns even more than i
- 1:22:20Speaker 6: do oh.
- 1:22:20Speaker 5: Yeah she i know she doesn't like westerns but even
- 1:22:22Speaker 5: then like i could just once it kicks into the
- 1:22:26Speaker 5: voiceover and it's doing this silly little rambling thing and
- 1:22:28Speaker 5: i was just like she would already be just seething
- 1:22:33Speaker 5: so yes we picked the right week to do this
- 1:22:35Speaker 5: and it wasn't accidental let me tell you yeah I've
- 1:22:40Speaker 5: figured out our crew relatively well at this point, and
- 1:22:43Speaker 5: we're working around the landmines here. So if you fall
- 1:22:47Speaker 5: on the right side, hey, you know, feel free to
- 1:22:49Speaker 5: watch it and get a hold of us and let
- 1:22:51Speaker 5: us know what you think of it, because I would
- 1:22:53Speaker 5: like to see how many people out there have seen
- 1:22:56Speaker 5: this Divine in a Peckinpah film, which is, again, how
- 1:22:59Speaker 5: Tab went into it. That's what he wanted to make.
- 1:23:01Speaker 5: So if you haven't seen it, check it out and
- 1:23:04Speaker 5: let us know what you think. If you hate it,
- 1:23:06Speaker 5: don't blame me, you know. All right, so we will
- 1:23:08Speaker 5: take a break and be back with the rest of
- 1:23:10Speaker 5: the show.
- 1:23:11Speaker 14: Give me another bottle.
- 1:23:12Speaker 16: Rosie, don't you think you've had enough? I know when
- 1:23:15Speaker 16: I've had enough, I fall on the floor.
- 1:23:18Speaker 18: What is it a tarnished man wants within his tarnished hand?
- 1:23:23Speaker 4: His bony fingers holding fast to lustful things that never last.
- 1:23:30Speaker 4: Driven on by endless.
- 1:23:33Speaker 18: Greed, this tarnished humble weed. He's a tarnished tumbleweed.
- 1:23:45Speaker 16: The female. The Female, the most controversial film of our time.
- 1:23:59Speaker 16: So starkly realistic, the New York Daily News and the
- 1:24:02Speaker 16: Dallas Times Herald said, The Female makes I, a woman,
- 1:24:06Speaker 16: look like Mary Poppins. The Female offers sophisticated male and
- 1:24:14Speaker 16: female moviegoers the most adult, award-winning quality picture ever made.
- 1:24:20Speaker 16: Critics throughout the country have acclaimed The Female. Now you
- 1:24:23Speaker 16: can decide for yourself. Decide if you feel compassion for
- 1:24:27Speaker 16: this female. This is strictly adult film entertainment. If you
- 1:24:32Speaker 16: will be offended by the scenes of The Female, please
- 1:24:35Speaker 16: don't see this motion picture. The Female, a startling screen experience.

- 1:25:05Speaker 1: All of life's riddles are answered in the movies. And now,
- 1:25:10Speaker 1: on with the show.
- 1:25:15Speaker 9: Let me take you South of my border Just north
- 1:25:28Speaker 9: of my garter Where everything's on order for you Wear
- 1:25:37Speaker 9: it sweet like a potion.
- 1:25:39Speaker 2: Feel the heat, feel the motion.
- 1:25:43Speaker 9: Margarita's hot from head to her shoe.
- 1:25:46Speaker 2: Oh. By the way.
- 1:25:51Speaker 5: This is yours because it has buttercup on it.
- 1:25:55Speaker 15: Oh, cool.
- 1:25:55Speaker 6: I didn't know it had a VCR.
- 1:25:56Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 1:25:57Speaker 6: Cool.
- 1:25:57Speaker 5: That's been yours for quite a while.
- 1:26:00Speaker 6: Yeah, probably since like 1999. Yeah, pretty much.
- 1:26:04Speaker 7: Awesome.
- 1:26:06Speaker 14: Oh, cool.
- 1:26:07Speaker 6: I can watch Dead End Drive-In.
- 1:26:09Speaker 5: I can watch my two VHS tapes that I still have.
- 1:26:12Speaker 2: Yeah, I know.
- 1:26:13Speaker 5: Sadly, I brought boxes and boxes of VHS tapes in.
- 1:26:16Speaker 5: I really need to do something about that.
- 1:26:18Speaker 6: I remember I used to get really mad if someone
- 1:26:20Speaker 6: would try to stick a VHS tape next to your DVDs.
- 1:26:23Speaker 5: It doesn't go here! They're different. They have their own area.
- 1:26:31Speaker 6: As you all can guess, Brian's DVD collection was grouped
- 1:26:35Speaker 6: by genre and director.
- 1:26:37Speaker 5: Sadly, I did have them grouped. Yeah, pretty much. Definitely
- 1:26:40Speaker 5: by director. Yeah. Since then, since the disheveling of my collection,
- 1:26:44Speaker 5: now they're just thrown in there at this point. So
- 1:26:47Speaker 5: we'll see if.
- 1:26:48Speaker 7: I go back and reorganize them.
- 1:26:50Speaker 5: Who knows?
- 1:26:50Speaker 6: But yeah, that's okay. I always did that too. It's
- 1:26:55Speaker 6: no shame in that.
- 1:26:56Speaker 5: Oh, no.
- 1:26:58Speaker 7: All right, we are back, and we very well may
- 1:27:00Speaker 7: have feedback, but we're.
- 1:27:03Speaker 5: Again, I think we're going to postpone it till next
- 1:27:05Speaker 5: time around, at least till we have more of the
- 1:27:08Speaker 5: crew to listen to it, so it wouldn't do much
- 1:27:11Speaker 5: good to go over it anyway at this point, so
- 1:27:14Speaker 5: we will probably hang on till next week and see
- 1:27:17Speaker 5: what sort of feedback we've got coming in, but until then,
- 1:27:20Speaker 5: keep the feedback coming in.
- 1:27:28Speaker 8: Don't be shy. We'd like to hear from you. So
- 1:27:30Speaker 8: give us a call at 502-365-5565. Or you can email

- 1:27:46Speaker 8: at Pop Syndicate. Or go to popsyndicate.com and go to
- 1:27:49Speaker 8: the forum sections and look for Movie Meltdown.
- 1:27:59Speaker 5: Okay, kids, get out your decoder pins.
- 1:28:02Speaker 6: Was that what I was supposed to do?
- 1:28:04Speaker 5: That's good.
- 1:28:05Speaker 8: Go for that again.
- 1:28:06Speaker 6: Okay.
- 1:28:07Speaker 5: Now tell me it's time.
- 1:28:09Speaker 6: It's time!
- 1:28:10Speaker 5: Time for the Movie Meltdown Secret Circle reveal of the
- 1:28:12Speaker 5: next two features! Or random stuff that may or may
- 1:28:16Speaker 5: not happen, depending on how things go.
- 1:28:17Speaker 1: Set your pins to V2.
- 1:28:19Speaker 2: Here is the message.
- 1:28:21Speaker 5: I'll tell you now, we've obviously strayed this past week,
- 1:28:25Speaker 5: and I'm surprised the week before worked out as well
- 1:28:28Speaker 5: as it did, because yeah, Sam and I were fighting
- 1:28:31Speaker 5: just to get the previous week's episode up and running.
- 1:28:34Speaker 5: Mostly I blame Skype, because it kind of sucks a
- 1:28:36Speaker 5: lot of the time, but We pieced it together. It
- 1:28:39Speaker 5: came together. really good after the fact. So, yeah, you
- 1:28:42Speaker 5: never can tell what's going to happen week in and
- 1:28:44Speaker 5: week out. So that having been said, I'll tell you
- 1:28:47Speaker 5: what I'm thinking at least next week, and we'll see
- 1:28:50Speaker 5: what really pans out. Next week, once again, is supposedly
- 1:28:54Speaker 5: the release of Kick-Ass, and I think we need to
- 1:28:57Speaker 5: go see that and talk about, you know, Hit Girl
- 1:29:00Speaker 5: beating some people down. So in my mind, that's where
- 1:29:03Speaker 5: we're going to go next week. We'll head out on
- 1:29:05Speaker 5: the town and see Kick-Ass. So we'll see if that
- 1:29:08Speaker 5: actually happens.
- 1:29:09Speaker 8: In the real world.
- 1:29:10Speaker 5: And hopefully by then we'll have pieced together at least
- 1:29:12Speaker 5: a workable version of this studio that we're now in.
- 1:29:16Speaker 5: It sure as hell ain't going to be done. But
- 1:29:18Speaker 5: at least I can clear out enough stuff that other
- 1:29:20Speaker 5: people can get into the room and we don't have
- 1:29:22Speaker 5: to climb over boxes to get there because that's pretty
- 1:29:25Speaker 5: much what happened this week. Oh, and the following week,
- 1:29:29Speaker 5: I think, is still open, so I guess we can
- 1:29:31Speaker 5: try to round out the Wraith, come back around to it.
- 1:29:35Speaker 8: We'll see.
- 1:29:36Speaker 5: What's that one about?
- 1:29:37Speaker 1: Oh, Lord.
- 1:29:38Speaker 5: It's a car movie and a supernatural movie and a
- 1:29:42Speaker 5: Charlie Sheen movie.
- 1:29:44Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:29:46Speaker 5: I actually had somebody complain about that when they wrote
- 1:29:51Speaker 5: in and said, the Wraith, really? Come on, guys. live
- 1:29:55Speaker 5: without the charlie sheen well this was old charlie sheen
- 1:29:58Speaker 5: this was back when he was still a star doesn't
- 1:30:00Speaker 5: mean he was any better but he was a star
- 1:30:02Speaker 5: he was.
- 1:30:02Speaker 6: Like shooting kelly preston in the arm with a gun.
- 1:30:05Speaker 5: Um before that actually.
- 1:30:08Speaker 6: Wait maybe that was in the 80s wasn't it or
- 1:30:11Speaker 6: was it the.
- 1:30:11Speaker 5: 90s i was thinking kelly preston yeah i.
- 1:30:15Speaker 6: Think it's whoever's married to john travolta isn't that kelly preston.
- 1:30:20Speaker 7: When was that wait what was they were engaged.
- 1:30:23Speaker 6: And he shot her in the arm, and then they
- 1:30:24Speaker 6: broke up. I only know this because she was in
- 1:30:29Speaker 6: an episode of Tales from the Crypt I watched last week,
- 1:30:33Speaker 6: and I had to internet movie date IMDb her, and
- 1:30:37Speaker 6: that's what it said. It could be wrong. Someone could
- 1:30:39Speaker 6: have just put it on there to, like, fuck with me.
- 1:30:41Speaker 5: It wouldn't surprise me.
- 1:30:42Speaker 6: But that's what I read on IMDb, and if it's wrong.
- 1:30:45Speaker 5: I think he was doing a lot of coke at
- 1:30:46Speaker 5: that point, so it wouldn't surprise me.
- 1:30:49Speaker 2: Allegedly.
- 1:30:50Speaker 5: I don't really know what Charlie Sheen does, but, I mean, really,
- 1:30:52Speaker 5: look at him now.
- 1:30:53Speaker 6: I just think, wow, she has horrible taste in men.
- 1:30:57Speaker 2: Horrible.
- 1:30:58Speaker 7: John Travolta was big back in the day. You know,
- 1:31:00Speaker 7: when she got him, he was almost at the edge
- 1:31:03Speaker 7: of not being lame, so, you know.
- 1:31:04Speaker 6: You could plant a potato farm in his face, Dimple.
- 1:31:09Speaker 5: Well, I won't argue that, but, well, allegedly, you know.
- 1:31:13Speaker 5: We'll have to test that theory and see if it
- 1:31:15Speaker 5: works out.
- 1:31:17Speaker 2: Oh, Lord.
- 1:31:18Speaker 5: So that's, I'm assuming, we're throwing it out as a
- 1:31:20Speaker 5: possibility for the following week. I know Rod's all fired
- 1:31:23Speaker 5: up to watch some of the raids. So, you know,
- 1:31:25Speaker 5: we try to throw some in for everybody. I got
- 1:31:28Speaker 5: to watch Lust in the Dust this week. So we'll
- 1:31:30Speaker 5: see what everybody else is up for.
- 1:31:31Speaker 6: Forbidden Zone for me.
- 1:31:33Speaker 5: See, now I want to watch Forbidden Zone. I'm still
- 1:31:36Speaker 5: working on that one. I've been working on that one
- 1:31:37Speaker 5: for a while.
- 1:31:39Speaker 6: I was thinking the other day how badly I need
- 1:31:41Speaker 6: a Forbidden Zone soundtrack. So if anyone can... magically send
- 1:31:47Speaker 6: me a Forbidden Zone soundtrack, that would be awesome.
- 1:31:52Speaker 5: You know, if you just have one laying around.
- 1:31:54Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 1:31:54Speaker 5: We do have an address on the website.
- 1:31:56Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:31:56Speaker 5: Or if you can download it and, you know, MP3
- 1:31:58Speaker 5: it on over, hey, send it to the email address.
- 1:32:01Speaker 6: Just saying.
- 1:32:05Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:32:05Speaker 5: I think that pretty much wraps up this week. I
- 1:32:08Speaker 5: guess we can go out with the musical stylings of Ms.
- 1:32:11Speaker 8: Divine.
- 1:32:11Speaker 6: Hell yeah.
- 1:32:14Speaker 7: Why would you not want to?
- 1:32:16Speaker 5: She is divine. Otherwise, that about does it. We will
- 1:32:19Speaker 5: return next week. Same geek time, same geek feed. Thanks
- 1:32:22Speaker 5: for listening.
- 1:32:24Speaker 4: Bye.
- 1:32:24Speaker 5: Bye.
- 1:32:25Speaker 19: This is a little song written for me by a
- 1:32:28Speaker 19: very dear friend of mine.
- 1:32:29Speaker 6: It's a story.
- 1:32:30Speaker 2: Try to.
- 1:32:30Speaker 1: Sing it, honey, before any more of us dies.
- 1:32:32Speaker 2: What'd you say your name was, sugar?
- 1:32:35Speaker 4: Red Dick.
- 1:32:36Speaker 1: Hit it, Dick.
- 1:32:38Speaker 5: These lips.
- 1:32:43Speaker 19: We're made for kissing these hips. We're made for bliss
- 1:32:48Speaker 19: in these arms. We're made for squeezing you tight every day,
- 1:32:54Speaker 19: only every night.
- 1:32:56Speaker 2: These lips.
- 1:32:58Speaker 19: We're made for selecting these hips. We're made for connecting
- 1:33:03Speaker 19: these legs. were made for rapping around you so tight.
- 1:33:08Speaker 4: Olé!
- 1:33:09Speaker 7: Every night when you.
- 1:33:11Speaker 19: See me dancing on the floor, you'll agree I'm classed
- 1:33:16Speaker 19: to the core.
- 1:33:17Speaker 2: When you see.
- 1:33:19Speaker 19: Me dancing with the boys, you'll agree you've never seen
- 1:33:23Speaker 19: such poise. These lips were made for tasting my time.
- 1:33:30Speaker 19: Wasn't made for wasting, so I'm Gonna show you how
- 1:33:36Speaker 19: it's done just for fun.
- 1:33:37Speaker 5: Anyone wanna come?
- 1:33:39Speaker 3: These lips were made for kissing.
- 1:33:42Speaker 18: Take a sip.
- 1:33:43Speaker 19: And you'll know what you've been missing. You'll flip when
- 1:33:48Speaker 19: this tamale wants to make you stay.
- 1:33:51Speaker 7: Every day, ole, every night.
- 1:33:53Speaker 2: What you say? Every day, ole, every night.
- 1:33:57Speaker 7: We can play every day, ole, every night.
- 1:34:00Speaker 2: Well, all right.
