- 1:41Speaker 1: this episode, we are talking about this week's full episode
- 1:45Speaker 1: of Disgraceland on Heath Ledger. Favorite fight scenes from our
- 1:48Speaker 1: favorite films, the sources that we used for our recent
- 1:51Speaker 1: episode or Disgraceland, which helped us uncover one of the
- 1:54Speaker 1: wildest paparazzi stories that we've ever heard, This one of
- 1:57Speaker 1: fourse on Heath Ledger. And of course we're getting into
- 2:00Speaker 1: your voicemails, your text your dms and more and as always,
- 2:04Speaker 1: a whole lot of rosie. All right, disc goes, Let's
- 2:07Speaker 1: say get into it. Where is the line? And how
- 2:23Speaker 1: do you know if you passed it? That's the question.
- 2:25Speaker 1: I've been close to the line. I think most of
- 2:27Speaker 1: us have. I'm sure some of us though never have,
- 2:29Speaker 1: and I envy you, But who among you has walked
- 2:31Speaker 1: up to the line and stepped over it, either willingly
- 2:35Speaker 1: or unwillingly. The line is madness. The line is extremism,
- 2:40Speaker 1: The line is addiction. The line is obsession. The line
- 2:43Speaker 1: is many things. You know it when you approach it.
- 2:47Speaker 1: For me, it would always show up at about five
- 2:49Speaker 1: am in some strangers kitchen. Most recently, however, it's shown
- 2:52Speaker 1: up in my work. How far do you go? How
- 2:54Speaker 1: high do you try to jump? Knowing that the more
- 2:56Speaker 1: you try, the harder the pain when you fall, or well,
- 3:00Speaker 1: we've discussed countless musicians who've crossed the line, murderers, cult leaders, addicts,
- 3:07Speaker 1: and of course we've also discussed numerous actors who've crossed
- 3:10Speaker 1: the line. Now, musicians tend to cross over. Like most
- 3:12Speaker 1: people we know, and most people that we know and
- 3:14Speaker 1: we recognize, the musicians incorporate their extreme behavior into their lifestyle. This,
- 3:20Speaker 1: as you know, can be very scary when the successful
- 3:23Speaker 1: or even struggling songwriter suddenly thinks he's Jesus and starts
- 3:26Speaker 1: a real life cult well paging mister Manson. But actors
- 3:30Speaker 1: tend to cross the line for their craft. Many make
- 3:34Speaker 1: it back over the line to become themselves again. Most
- 3:36Speaker 1: do to go on leading happy lives as family men
- 3:39Speaker 1: and women or whatever. But of course many do not,
- 3:42Speaker 1: and we've all heard the stories of actors famously committing
- 3:45Speaker 1: themselves to the roles in many cases to achieve staggering
- 3:48Speaker 1: creative success. Jamie Foxx gluing his eyeshut to play Ray,
- 3:52Speaker 1: Charles Nick Cage having his teeth pulled without anesthetic for
- 3:56Speaker 1: his role in Birdie, Robert de Niro breaking Joe Peshi's
- 3:59Speaker 1: rib in Raging bull Ouch, Christian Bale, of course, losing
- 4:03Speaker 1: sixty five pounds living on only an apple and a
- 4:05Speaker 1: coffee a day to prep for his role in The Machinist.
- 4:09Speaker 1: All these actors went further than was ever expected of
- 4:13Speaker 1: them to make the roles that they were playing more authentic,
- 4:16Speaker 1: more believable, more relatable, crossing the line with their method
- 4:20Speaker 1: acting approach, playing the part, achieving success with sometimes dangerous consequences,
- 4:25Speaker 1: and then most importantly, crossing back over again, like I said,
- 4:29Speaker 1: to go back to their normal lives and eventually play
- 4:32Speaker 1: other roles and act in other films. All of them survived.
- 4:34Speaker 1: Everyone I just mentioned Jamie fox Nick Nicholas Cage, Joe Petci,
- 4:38Speaker 1: Christian Bale, Robert de Niro. Heath Ledger did not. He
- 4:43Speaker 1: crossed the line and it seems he wasn't ever able
- 4:46Speaker 1: to fully make it back. Many elements contributed to Heath
- 4:51Speaker 1: Ledger's death at a young age, but his death coming
- 4:54Speaker 1: on the heels of his obsessive research into a commitment
- 4:57Speaker 1: to his role in The Joker in two thousand, It's
- 5:00Speaker 1: The Dark Knight is no doubt a key contributor. To
- 5:03Speaker 1: say the role killed Heath Ledger is unfair and inaccurate.
- 5:07Speaker 1: It's not like Heath Ledger didn't have agency. He did.
- 5:10Speaker 1: But I believe while researching the role of the Joker,
- 5:15Speaker 1: some internal tripwire in Heath Ledger was triggered, some line
- 5:21Speaker 1: was crossed, and he never made it fully back. You
- 5:24Speaker 1: can hear all about the results in this week's full
- 5:26Speaker 1: episode of disgraceand However, one of the ways in which
- 5:30Speaker 1: Heath Ledger's incredible research and commitment to the role manifested
- 5:33Speaker 1: on screen in The Dark Knight is during the famous
- 5:37Speaker 1: fight scene between his character The Joker and Christian Bales Batman.
- 5:42Speaker 1: The results are violent, to say the least, painful, super real,
- 5:48Speaker 1: and again you can hear about it in this week's
- 5:50Speaker 1: full episode of Disgraceland on Heath Ledger. But it got
- 5:52Speaker 1: me thinking about some of the greatest fight scenes in
- 5:54Speaker 1: Hollywood history and trying to nail that list down to
- 5:57Speaker 1: my five favorite five favorite fight scenes. And WHOA was
- 6:01Speaker 1: this not an easy task. It is really an impossible task.
- 6:05Speaker 1: Think about it. Think about how many great fight scenes
- 6:08Speaker 1: there are in films, even movies that aren't action movies,
- 6:11Speaker 1: comedies have great fight scenes sometimes. But that doesn't mean
- 6:13Speaker 1: I'm not going to try to do this. It doesn't
- 6:15Speaker 1: mean I'm not going to ask you for your five
- 6:17Speaker 1: favorite fight scenes either. I am. But first here are mine.
- 6:21Speaker 1: Number five Leonardo DiCaprio versus the Bear in Revenant, because
- 6:26Speaker 1: I've never seen anything like this before and it's indescribably
- 6:30Speaker 1: violent and harrowing. I'm not even gonna try to explain
- 6:34Speaker 1: what this is. It's just literally Leonardo DiCaprio's character versus
- 6:39Speaker 1: a massive bear and they get in a fight and
- 6:42Speaker 1: it's fucking unbelievable. You have to watch this. If you
- 6:46Speaker 1: have not seen it, I guarantee you you've never seen
- 6:48Speaker 1: anything like it before. Number four Batman versus Bane. That's right,
- 6:52Speaker 1: not Batman versus a joker from the Dark Knight. Why.
- 6:54Speaker 1: I don't know, To be honest, it's kind of heath
- 6:56Speaker 1: ledgered out by the time I get around to researching
- 6:58Speaker 1: this fight list. So there you go. Number three The
- 7:01Speaker 1: Handsome Brothers versus everyone from Slap Shot. This might be
- 7:04Speaker 1: my favorite, probably the funniest and most absurd, but I
- 7:08Speaker 1: had to hold it at three for reasons I'll explain
- 7:11Speaker 1: right now. Number two Tommy and Jimmy versus Billy Bats
- 7:14Speaker 1: and Goodfellas. I know this is going to get some
- 7:16Speaker 1: of you pissed off at me because it's not much
- 7:17Speaker 1: of a fight. It's more of an ambush. But the
- 7:19Speaker 1: Donovan saw im playing in the background, contrasted with Scorsese's
- 7:23Speaker 1: violence makes this one hard to talk for me personally,
- 7:27Speaker 1: and okay speaking to personally. And number one, the greatest
- 7:31Speaker 1: fight scene in the history of Hollywood film. This is
- 7:34Speaker 1: so stupid. It sounds so dumb coming out of my
- 7:36Speaker 1: mouth trying to actually narrow this down to five. And
- 7:38Speaker 1: never mind one the number one though, the number one
- 7:41Speaker 1: fight scene. Though from my point of view, Rocky versus
- 7:46Speaker 1: Apollo Creed in Rocky Why, okay, it has nothing to
- 7:49Speaker 1: do with boxing, It has nothing to do with how
- 7:51Speaker 1: it's shot. And yes, I know that the fight scenes
- 7:53Speaker 1: in Raging Bowl and countless other movies are better than
- 7:56Speaker 1: this fight scene. I know that by the end of
- 7:58Speaker 1: Rocky we're not even sure who won. I mean, let's
- 7:59Speaker 1: be honest. Can you actually remember the reason Rocky versus
- 8:02Speaker 1: Apollo Creed is the greatest fight scene of all time
- 8:04Speaker 1: is because of one word love. By the end, when
- 8:08Speaker 1: Rocky is so beaten and battered that he can barely stand,
- 8:12Speaker 1: he made it man. He went the distance, which is
- 8:15Speaker 1: all he wanted to do, and in that moment his
- 8:18Speaker 1: greatest and most triumphant moment, the moment where he personally
- 8:21Speaker 1: persevered to slay his dragon, In that moment when the
- 8:24Speaker 1: eyes of his beloved hometown of Philadelphia and of the
- 8:27Speaker 1: world are shining down on him favorably, when Rocky succeeds
- 8:31Speaker 1: and becoming the one thing he most certainly wanted to become,
- 8:35Speaker 1: which is someone who wasn't just another bump from the neighborhood.
- 8:37Speaker 1: In that great moment of personal triumph, what does Rocky do?
- 8:42Speaker 1: He cries of for Adrian. He doesn't want glory, he
- 8:46Speaker 1: wants his girl. It's love, love, love, and more love.
- 8:51Speaker 1: It's all Rocky needs, and Rocky is the greatest love
- 8:56Speaker 1: story ever told, because love is all any of us need,
- 8:59Speaker 1: and so when the greatest love story culminates with a fight,
- 9:02Speaker 1: that fight scene must therefore be the greatest two right right?
- 9:06Speaker 1: I don't know, seems logical to me? Fight me if
- 9:08Speaker 1: you don't agree, Actually don't. I'm not resorting to violence
- 9:11Speaker 1: from my work. That would be crossing the line. So
- 9:13Speaker 1: let me know you're five. Just five, Five favorite fight
- 9:16Speaker 1: scenes from Hollywood history six one seven nine oh six
- 9:19Speaker 1: six six three eight, voicemail and text. I'll be back
- 9:21Speaker 1: in a flash. Let's talk for a minute about the
- 9:45Speaker 1: sources we use for this episode. There are a couple
- 9:47Speaker 1: of books out there that were super helpful for us.
- 9:49Speaker 1: One called Heath Ledger, Hollywood's Dark Star by Brian J.
- 9:53Speaker 1: Robb In. Another called Dark Joker Heath Ledger's Joker Transformation,
- 9:58Speaker 1: the Filming Days of Dark Night and his Tragic Death
- 10:01Speaker 1: by Marcus Dakota. That's another one. The latter is a
- 10:05Speaker 1: little tough to find, I believe it's self published, but
- 10:08Speaker 1: both books contained plenty of holy shit moments. Whether it
- 10:11Speaker 1: was the idea that Heath may have had a hard
- 10:13Speaker 1: time shaking his iconic role as the Joker, or even
- 10:17Speaker 1: the one one of the most fucked up encounters that
- 10:20Speaker 1: an actor has ever had with the paparazzi, but more
- 10:22Speaker 1: on that later. In addition to the books, though, we used,
- 10:25Speaker 1: of course, the twenty seventeen documentary I Am Heath Ledger
- 10:28Speaker 1: as well, which Heath's family participated in after Heath's partner
- 10:33Speaker 1: Michelle Williams gave the film her blessing. It's worth noting
- 10:36Speaker 1: two that when we're researching these subjects for Disgrace Sand episodes,
- 10:40Speaker 1: the more contemporary the subject, the less definitive research materials
- 10:45Speaker 1: you have to go on sometimes. And what I mean
- 10:48Speaker 1: by this is that if you're researching a subject like
- 10:50Speaker 1: Marilyn Monroe, Marlon Brando excuse me, or Bob Marley or
- 10:55Speaker 1: any other major actor or musician or artist from the past,
- 10:59Speaker 1: there's often a ton of sources out there in terms
- 11:01Speaker 1: of major books, and you can pretty easily figure out
- 11:04Speaker 1: which ones are perhaps more credible than others. And like
- 11:08Speaker 1: I talked about the other week with Steve McQueen, it's
- 11:10Speaker 1: often helpful to have a few at your disposal for
- 11:12Speaker 1: different points of view, but with a more contemporary figure
- 11:17Speaker 1: like Heath Ledger, it can be way more difficult to
- 11:19Speaker 1: have access to a complete picture. And by complete all
- 11:22Speaker 1: I mean is a portrait of the artist that has
- 11:24Speaker 1: the benefit of hindsight of time, years and decades in
- 11:28Speaker 1: which people who didn't speak before are now speaking. New information,
- 11:32Speaker 1: new details come to light that weren't available before. Oftentimes
- 11:35Speaker 1: you get sources who have different interests than those who
- 11:39Speaker 1: are close to the subject, who aren't, let's say so
- 11:43Speaker 1: concerned with maintaining legacy and that sort of thing, and
- 11:47Speaker 1: often you get a more honest portrayal. Heath Ledger is
- 11:50Speaker 1: of course gone tragically, but in some ways it's going
- 11:54Speaker 1: to be a while before we truly understand some of
- 11:57Speaker 1: the things about his life and some of the things
- 11:59Speaker 1: about his death. And I say all this not to
- 12:01Speaker 1: say that researching and writing an episode on Heath Ledger
- 12:04Speaker 1: is more difficult per se. But it's just a different beast,
- 12:06Speaker 1: and you should know that when you're listening to these
- 12:08Speaker 1: more contemporary subjects in Disgraceland. However, I think we did
- 12:12Speaker 1: the Heath Ledger story justice. You know, this was eventually
- 12:15Speaker 1: I'm sorry, this was originally a bad Lands episode that
- 12:18Speaker 1: we released a couple of years ago. It's never been
- 12:21Speaker 1: in the Disgraceland feed for the Disgraceland listeners. It is now.
- 12:25Speaker 1: When we released the bad Lands episode, I was contacted
- 12:28Speaker 1: by Vice Vice TV to be part of their series
- 12:33Speaker 1: Resolved in their episode on Heath Ledger, and that invitation
- 12:38Speaker 1: came on the heels of them hearing what was the
- 12:41Speaker 1: Badlands episode which we produced on Heath Ledger, which many
- 12:45Speaker 1: of you are now hearing for the first time in Disgraceland.
- 12:49Speaker 1: And if you're curious, you can find that that Vice
- 12:51Speaker 1: episode out there with me in it. It's on the internet.
- 12:54Speaker 1: Just search Resolved Heath Ledger and you'll see yours truly
- 13:00Speaker 1: there talking Heath. Okay, but I want to know what
- 13:03Speaker 1: do you think about this episode we did? Where do
- 13:06Speaker 1: you stand on Heath Ledger? What's his best performance? To me?
- 13:11Speaker 1: It's either The Dark Knight or Broke Back Mountain. It's
- 13:14Speaker 1: those two, and those two only in the in the
- 13:16Speaker 1: sort of pantheon the apex of his career. Let me
- 13:20Speaker 1: know which one you think. I don't know. That's a
- 13:24Speaker 1: tough one. I'm thinking about it now. Sorry, I'm getting
- 13:25Speaker 1: tripped up thinking about which one I actually think is
- 13:28Speaker 1: better The Dark Knight or Broke Back Mountain. That's a
- 13:30Speaker 1: tough one. It's a really tough one. And is Heath
- 13:33Speaker 1: one of your favorite actors of the early two thousands?
- 13:34Speaker 1: If not, who is? Hit me up? Let me know
- 13:36Speaker 1: six one seven, nine oh six, six, six, three eight,
- 13:38Speaker 1: and especially hit me up on your top five favorite
- 13:42Speaker 1: fight scenes from Hollywood? Is Heath Ledger and Christian Bale
- 13:46Speaker 1: from the Dark Knight? Does it crack your top five?
- 13:49Speaker 1: If not, what is your top five? Six one seven,
- 13:51Speaker 1: nine oh six, six, six three eight. Just like Michael
- 13:53Speaker 1: from The four one.
- 13:54Speaker 2: Five, Hey Jakes and Michael from hand Tranmick Michigan, you
- 13:58Speaker 2: already named the greatest cover signs all along the watch Tower,
- 14:03Speaker 2: Pretty Woman's Fine, that's my favorite track on that album.
- 14:07Speaker 2: I actually think that, Uh, the cover of the Cakes too,
- 14:09Speaker 2: and Where of All the Good Times Gone?
- 14:11Speaker 1: Is awesome?
- 14:12Speaker 2: Killer?
- 14:13Speaker 1: All Right?
- 14:13Speaker 2: Love your show, damn.
- 14:15Speaker 1: Mike, Thanks brother. Yeah, we talked about those two in particular. Man,
- 14:20Speaker 1: this is the subject that just keeps on giving. People
- 14:21Speaker 1: don't want to stop talking about the greatest covers of
- 14:23Speaker 1: all time. And I don't blame me. It's a compelling subject.
- 14:26Speaker 1: But we talked about all the all on the watch
- 14:28Speaker 1: Shower of course, and pretty woman? Where have all the
- 14:30Speaker 1: good times gone? By? The Kinks? And I can't tell
- 14:34Speaker 1: I should know this. Did the Kinks cover that from
- 14:36Speaker 1: somebody else who wrote it? Or are you referring to
- 14:39Speaker 1: David Bowie's cover of the Kinks vert? I always thought
- 14:44Speaker 1: Bowie covered the Kinks? Am I getting this wrong? Let
- 14:47Speaker 1: me know? Six one seven nine six six six three
- 14:50Speaker 1: eight voicemail or text eight one four texts in. Hey,
- 14:54Speaker 1: an episode about Ozzy Osborne trying to kill Sharon after
- 14:57Speaker 1: the Moscow Peace Festival would be cool. Hey, we have
- 15:00Speaker 1: that episode. It's in our archive. Go search out Ozzy Osbourne.
- 15:04Speaker 1: You will get it, all right, check it out. Seven
- 15:06Speaker 1: one nine rights in regarding Miss Harry referring to Debbie Harry.
- 15:11Speaker 1: So I'm just gonna say, Debbie Harry. Regarding Debbie Harry's
- 15:13Speaker 1: Ted Bundy story, Colan, It's true. One of her besties
- 15:17Speaker 1: is the jazz ensemble instructor at Ic, where my son
- 15:21Speaker 1: learned how to connect reading the music to his synesthesia.
- 15:25Speaker 1: She joined them on Fridays after school to sing. And
- 15:28Speaker 1: that's it, and presumably seven one nine Get the lowdown
- 15:31Speaker 1: from Debbie Harry there, all right, Yeah, I mean, look,
- 15:35Speaker 1: I always believe this story for a couple of reasons.
- 15:39Speaker 1: One and if you don't know what I'm talking about,
- 15:41Speaker 1: I'm talking about we did a Blondie episode. A big
- 15:45Speaker 1: part of that episode is Debbie Harry's claim that she
- 15:48Speaker 1: was abducted and escaped from Ted Bundy in the early
- 15:51Speaker 1: seventies in Manhattan. And I just did a little video
- 15:55Speaker 1: reel of it and released it on Instagram, So it's
- 15:58Speaker 1: resurfacing this top here for you guys. But a lot
- 16:01Speaker 1: of people, so you know, if this is new to you,
- 16:03Speaker 1: A lot of people call bullshit on this and think
- 16:05Speaker 1: that Debbie Harry is mistaken or lying that she did
- 16:09Speaker 1: not experience this event with Ted Bundy, and a lot
- 16:17Speaker 1: and I talk about it in the video, and I
- 16:19Speaker 1: talk about it in the episode. I talk about how
- 16:21Speaker 1: this has been disputed, however I happen to believe it
- 16:24Speaker 1: and the reasons I believe it or this. A lot
- 16:26Speaker 1: of people say Ted Bundy was not in New York
- 16:29Speaker 1: at that time, Okay, do you really know? Do you
- 16:32Speaker 1: really know? Now? There is competing evidence that he was elsewhere.
- 16:35Speaker 1: But it's not like we have an exact timeline of
- 16:39Speaker 1: where Ted Bundy was at every moment during that decade
- 16:43Speaker 1: and who he killed. There's all this circumstantial evidence that
- 16:47Speaker 1: points to the fact that there were many more victims
- 16:49Speaker 1: that we don't know about. Plus there's also evidence that
- 16:51Speaker 1: though people say he was not or could not have
- 16:53Speaker 1: been in Manhattan at that time Debbie Harry claims this
- 16:55Speaker 1: incident took place, there is evidence that supports that he
- 16:58Speaker 1: was in Philadelphia, which is like less than a two
- 17:01Speaker 1: hour drive away from New York. So it stands to
- 17:04Speaker 1: reason that he could have gone to Manhattan. Okay, put
- 17:07Speaker 1: that aside for a second. Debbie Harry is a very
- 17:10Speaker 1: sophisticated person. Okay. She clearly knows that when she puts
- 17:16Speaker 1: this stuff out there and continues to defend it, that
- 17:19Speaker 1: people are going to call bullshit on her and attack
- 17:22Speaker 1: her credibility. And I think Debbie Harry is the type
- 17:25Speaker 1: of person who actually gives a shit about her image,
- 17:28Speaker 1: about her legacy. And I think if she found out
- 17:30Speaker 1: that this was impossible and that she perhaps was mistaken,
- 17:34Speaker 1: you know, her lion eyes, whatever it was, she would,
- 17:38Speaker 1: if not corrected the record, at least she would have
- 17:42Speaker 1: stopped making this claim, which she has not. And now
- 17:46Speaker 1: people also say, yo, well Debbie Harry was blonde, she
- 17:49Speaker 1: wasn't Ted Bundy's type who only liked brunettes. Well, Debbie
- 17:53Speaker 1: Harry actually was a brunette. She was a brunette in
- 17:55Speaker 1: the early seventies before she dyed her hair and joined Blondie. Okay,
- 17:59Speaker 1: there you go for those reasons. Plus just Debbie fucking
- 18:02Speaker 1: Harry Man, I don't know. That's why I believe six
- 18:05Speaker 1: one seven nine oh six six six three eight. Do
- 18:07Speaker 1: you believe Debbie Harry? Let me know. Hit me up
- 18:09Speaker 1: on the voicemail, hit me up on the text. We're
- 18:11Speaker 1: gonna take a quick break. Be right back, Heidi, Hati, hatio.
- 18:29Speaker 1: We are back, people, And I want to dive into
- 18:31Speaker 1: this Heath Ledger paparazzi story just a little bit more
- 18:33Speaker 1: deeply the one that I mentioned up top, a little
- 18:35Speaker 1: bit more deeply. Excuse me, and we clarify that we
- 18:38Speaker 1: mentioned this paparazzi story up top, and I would like
- 18:41Speaker 1: to dive into it a little more deeply than we
- 18:44Speaker 1: did do in the episode right here in the bonus
- 18:47Speaker 1: episode getting tongue tied this morning. This is happening numerous times.
- 18:51Speaker 1: I'm recording very early. I gonna go to the doctors
- 18:53Speaker 1: later today. It's kind of messing up my schedule.
- 18:57Speaker 2: Uh.
- 18:57Speaker 1: And then I'm taking off for a brief little vacation
- 19:00Speaker 1: at the end of the week. That's kind of messing
- 19:02Speaker 1: up my schedule as well, jam packing everything front loading
- 19:06Speaker 1: the week here for me. So I'm recording really early,
- 19:08Speaker 1: and I'm drinking coffee while I record, which I normally
- 19:11Speaker 1: don't do, and I don't know it's tripping me up
- 19:16Speaker 1: or something. Anyways, I digress back to Heath Ledger. Okay,
- 19:21Speaker 1: this paparazzi story, this crazy story about members of the
- 19:24Speaker 1: press who tricked Heath into putting himself in a compromising
- 19:29Speaker 1: position in order for them to get secret photos that
- 19:33Speaker 1: they could sell for a huge payday. This is a
- 19:36Speaker 1: fucked up predatory story that we, like I said, we
- 19:40Speaker 1: get into in the episode. I'm gonna get into a
- 19:42Speaker 1: little more fully here. But here's the thing. We're going
- 19:44Speaker 1: to talk about this in the Disgraceland All Access feed. Okay,
