- 0:02[SPEAKER_00]: I folks, time for another episode of Film Study.
- 0:04[SPEAKER_00]: This is Ken McCusik.
- 0:06[SPEAKER_00]: And we're going to look forward to the Kimander's game here, the last preseason game.
- 0:12[SPEAKER_00]: And in a way today, and I'm recording this late Thursday night, we just had kind of a super bowl of the preseason today, which is the joint practice, the last joint practice, the last significant veteran work that will occur.
- 0:29[SPEAKER_00]: And as he was at the podium, Jesse Mentor was talking about this game and then he jumped right to cut down day.
- 0:38[SPEAKER_00]: And the big thing is, of course, there's a game to play in between.
- 0:40[SPEAKER_00]: And there are still some things I believe to look forward during that game, some tape to be done, and some honestly some spots, potentially on the 53 to be decided, but certainly on the practice squad at a couple of positions that are worth talking about.
- 0:56[SPEAKER_00]: Now, mintor made an interesting comment.
- 0:58[SPEAKER_00]: He said that a couple of additional guys would sit out this week, but not a lot.
- 1:03[SPEAKER_00]: I think there are as many as six players could even be more who won't play for various reasons.
- 1:10[SPEAKER_00]: And a couple of those are due to injuries, and so we can take them right off the top.
- 1:15[SPEAKER_00]: And don't think Zion Young or Balakone are going to play.
- 1:19[SPEAKER_00]: And he's already
- 1:26[SPEAKER_00]: They're both concerned about their week one health.
- 1:29[SPEAKER_00]: Well, of course.
- 1:30[SPEAKER_00]: And you'd be crazy to play him two days after he wasn't in a joint practice in the case of Zion Young, even though he has played in the games today.
- 1:41[SPEAKER_00]: So I expect him to sit out of this one.
- 1:43[SPEAKER_00]: Konae was hurt in the game and he actually addressed him directly and said that he wasn't sure Konae would make it by Friday.
- 1:50[SPEAKER_00]: Well, that's code.
- 1:51[SPEAKER_00]: He's not playing Friday no matter what.
- 1:53[SPEAKER_00]: I actually think there's a chance and perhaps a good reason why Konae would start the season on IR.
- 2:01[SPEAKER_00]: So that'll have to be something they decide on Sunday, which would eliminate him from the first
- 2:10[SPEAKER_00]: as a valuable mid-season replacement for the team, is something that Ravens had done a lot of in the past.
- 2:16[SPEAKER_00]: They're extremely good with it.
- 2:18[SPEAKER_00]: And there are two free IRDTR spots.
- 2:21[SPEAKER_00]: Now those are actually at a high demand.
- 2:23[SPEAKER_00]: This year, they could have additional spots for IRDTR players.
- 2:28[SPEAKER_00]: However, any additional spots have to come with a handshake agreement with a current player.
- 2:34[SPEAKER_00]: We'll discuss that more on Friday morning GM, look for that on Friday.
- 2:38[SPEAKER_00]: But anyway, the best possible other players of probabilities of other players sitting are probably Venge, you want to.
- 2:45[SPEAKER_00]: I think he still looked very green through two games.
- 2:48[SPEAKER_00]: However, he's absolutely critical to the Ravens.
- 2:51[SPEAKER_00]: On the other side of that, he needs more reps and the two centers ideally would have reps with him if either or both of them are to play.
- 3:02[SPEAKER_00]: So, Veng is sitting or not sitting, dressing or not dressing, he might be tied to postsick and win and what they decide to do with those two.
- 3:12[SPEAKER_00]: Ethan postsick is the next guy.
- 3:14[SPEAKER_00]: He may not need more live action.
- 3:16[SPEAKER_00]: It looks like he's primarily a matter honestly of strength and conditioning getting his legs ready to go.
- 3:23[SPEAKER_00]: In terms of
- 3:24[SPEAKER_00]: you know, understanding the dance steps of the position and having the muscle memory for it, I mean, Ethan Posick is a technical veteran.
- 3:32[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think that there's a lot more he needs to do other than to get himself in real football shape and that he may not quite be there.
- 3:40[SPEAKER_00]: They didn't play that late.
- 3:41[SPEAKER_00]: In the second preseason game, I thought it was a solid steep.
- 3:44[SPEAKER_00]: If you could do that for the whole year, the ratings would be thrilled by that.
- 3:47[SPEAKER_00]: So, anyway, hopefully Ethan Posick does not play this game because it's a fairly good
- 3:54[SPEAKER_00]: he can be.
- 3:56[SPEAKER_00]: Going to another play we look at TJ Tampa.
- 3:58[SPEAKER_00]: Now he's the fourth corner back and there are reasons why he should eat a few snaps in this game and get some more playing time because he's not going to get much during the regular season.
- 4:08[SPEAKER_00]: But it also is an opportunity to give an extended trial at opposite
- 4:13[SPEAKER_00]: corner positions to Robinson and longer beam and they are two guys who are fighting for their NFL lives right now and probably are the next man up in particular of Kona goes to IR one of them probably makes the roster so that it would be nice to get a good idea of which one you want to be the guy and the other guy can go to the practice squad and hopefully he's still
- 4:41[SPEAKER_00]: I think they're going to really try and figure out what they have in those two players.
- 4:46[SPEAKER_00]: Jacobi Lane, they took him out for the second half, and we had the famous, kind of a famous, the scene in the second half, or Walker made his long grab for 18 plus nine, nice run after the catch coming across the middle.
- 5:00[SPEAKER_00]: He walks out the field.
- 5:01[SPEAKER_00]: Jacobi Lane is congratulating him in street clothes.
- 5:05[SPEAKER_00]: Well, that certainly says a lot about the relative totem position of those two players.
- 5:10[SPEAKER_00]: And so that's something where I think we might not see laying it all.
- 5:13[SPEAKER_00]: I think he's at this point.
- 5:14[SPEAKER_00]: He's pretty clearly that the number three guy and they're planning a big snap total for him this year.
- 5:19[SPEAKER_00]: That being the case, then I think they probably want to have him off the field.
- 5:25[SPEAKER_00]: So those of the guys, anyway, you want to post it, Tampa, and Lane are questions, and Zion Young, and Conan Ellis, when I forgot Mike Green, the way in hell should he be on the field.
- 5:38[SPEAKER_00]: He was making me angry every time he was out there last week, he's played well.
- 5:44[SPEAKER_00]: you know, in the opportunities he's had, he certainly played well in the second preseason game.
- 5:48[SPEAKER_00]: I didn't look bad today.
- 5:49[SPEAKER_00]: He had some had some good past-rush drill work.
- 5:53[SPEAKER_00]: I got blocked 12 to 6 twice, but then he won with an inside move.
- 5:56[SPEAKER_00]: I thought he has done some things or enough things anyway.
- 6:00[SPEAKER_00]: Then I wouldn't take a chance.
- 6:01[SPEAKER_00]: He's also the Ravens.
- 6:03[SPEAKER_00]: Probably their second best past-rush at this point.
- 6:05[SPEAKER_00]: So they don't want to lose a guy from that outside line-backer rope.
- 6:11[SPEAKER_00]: All right, so what are we looking for in the game on Friday?
- 6:14[SPEAKER_00]: I think for starters, we're looking for extended trials, probably if I had to guess from Gwyn and Bullock.
- 6:23[SPEAKER_00]: So Gwyn has at this point, 475 career snaps of NFL action.
- 6:28[SPEAKER_00]: And obviously it's less than a half a season, 464 of those have been the preseason and 11 have been in the regular season.
- 6:34[SPEAKER_00]: So,
- 6:36[SPEAKER_00]: I think there will still be a desire to get him in for more live fire.
- 6:42[SPEAKER_00]: He's not a young man anymore, he's over 27 years old, but he could be a guy that they know it may be a limited amount of play he gets prior to anything that would happen to postsick and they want him to be as prepared as possible for that eventuality.
- 6:57[SPEAKER_00]: So I think there's a good possibility that when he's active in postsick is not, which is really the case I'm talking about.
- 7:04[SPEAKER_00]: then it's Gwyn who gets significant playing time in this game.
- 7:07[SPEAKER_00]: Mike plays as much as a half with Boa coming in to playing the second half.
- 7:12[SPEAKER_00]: Alternatively,
- 7:15[SPEAKER_00]: If they have decided, Gwen is the guy.
- 7:18[SPEAKER_00]: They may decide that postsick should play some.
- 7:22[SPEAKER_00]: I think he would play less because as I've said, I don't believe he really is good as a lot to gain from the play itself.
- 7:29[SPEAKER_00]: But you have a lot to lose if Gwen gets hurt, obviously so postsick, maybe they got you.
- 7:34[SPEAKER_00]: You put in there for a little bit of time.
- 7:36[SPEAKER_00]: They do have Bullock, and they do have in fact Nick Dawkins as well.
- 7:39[SPEAKER_00]: If they really wanted to dig down the depth shard and give somebody else some set or set or set or set or set or set.
- 7:43[SPEAKER_00]: I honestly think Bullock is the guy who needs to get a lot of playing time at center.
- 7:48[SPEAKER_00]: I think you finish the game with him from when every comes in.
- 7:51[SPEAKER_00]: Whether it's a beginning to second half, end to the first quarter, whatever it might be, I think he finishes the game or I think that makes a lot of sense.
- 7:58[SPEAKER_00]: He could also start the game at guard.
- 8:01[SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, you have alternatives like that, particularly Venk is out.
- 8:04[SPEAKER_00]: You're starting him at right guard.
- 8:05[SPEAKER_00]: You've priced right every Jones and Voorhees in that case.
- 8:08[SPEAKER_00]: And you put Bullock in at guard.
- 8:10[SPEAKER_00]: soon after maybe 34th drive at one of those two positions and you you ride him throughout the rest of the game.
- 8:18[SPEAKER_00]: I think Bullock is one of the guys who's a roster spot is a possibility
- 8:26[SPEAKER_00]: not entirely based on what he's done in this game, but it could be, it part based on that, the offense they need to decide whether or not they want to carry a tenth offensive lineman versus several other possibilities that are occurring across the alternatives that they have.
- 8:45[SPEAKER_00]: first is to carry a fourth running back and other is to carry a third quarter back.
- 8:49[SPEAKER_00]: Another is to go 26 and 24 and carry an extra player on the defensive side, which might allow a six defensive lineman.
- 8:55[SPEAKER_00]: All those things are are
- 8:57[SPEAKER_00]: possibilities.
- 8:58[SPEAKER_00]: I think that the most likely thing that they would do is probably to carry a tenth offensive alignment.
- 9:06[SPEAKER_00]: And if that's the case then Bullock is in pretty good position to get that spot and he wants to demonstrate more guard center versatility.
- 9:13[SPEAKER_00]: Best way to do that play guard center and other preseason game also show that the rust is shaking off.
- 9:18[SPEAKER_00]: from his time with the appendectomy, so, you know, he's still in theory.
- 9:24[SPEAKER_00]: He's recovered, but let's see it.
- 9:26[SPEAKER_00]: Let's see the rust is all often.
- 9:29[SPEAKER_00]: His muscle memory is what it should be.
- 9:32[SPEAKER_00]: All right, moving on, it tightens.
- 9:34[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think there's any question about the four tightens that make the team, but start with that.
- 9:38[SPEAKER_00]: It's very simple that Andrew Smith, Gaveus, and Hibner are going to be the four guys.
- 9:43[SPEAKER_00]: The guy they really want to get a good look at in this game is Lucas Scott.
- 9:47[SPEAKER_00]: Now, Hibner and Quaveus may play, but Lucas Scott is the guy they need to try and figure out what they have.
- 9:54[SPEAKER_00]: And I think that means looking at him as both a blocker and a receiver,
- 9:58[SPEAKER_00]: And trying to figure out if Smyth goes down is he the guy, can he be the guy we need to be as an in-line blocker, and As it potentially offering some Receiving thread as I'll tell you that I think you want both and the question is whether Scott is that guy.
- 10:13[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think that either
- 10:16[SPEAKER_00]: wave us or certainly not hybner is really a good option for an inline player.
- 10:23[SPEAKER_00]: But they have other options in Scott if they decide he's not the guy, they might go to a six to offensive lineman when they want the extra power.
- 10:29[SPEAKER_00]: Now that's very limiting it basically.
- 10:32[SPEAKER_00]: Immediately flags to your opponent exactly what you're doing with your eligible severs.
- 10:37[SPEAKER_00]: I don't like it, but it's something they may try.
- 10:39[SPEAKER_00]: And a sky could be like an Eric Tomlinson where there's the threat of him being a receiver, but it's not very significant.
- 10:45[SPEAKER_00]: He gets one to four targets in an entire season say, I think that's very possible.
- 10:52[SPEAKER_00]: And of course, he wouldn't be playing anywhere near a full season for the Ravens.
- 10:56[SPEAKER_00]: We wouldn't believe.
- 10:57[SPEAKER_00]: So anyway, sky would be one possibility.
- 11:02[SPEAKER_00]: Moving on, the next thing they need to really figure out is their quarterback position.
- 11:06[SPEAKER_00]: And like I said, with a tenth offensive line, and one of the options is to carry a third quarterback, as well, because that's not in the baseline numbers, but they still could do that.
- 11:15[SPEAKER_00]: And they might consider it if they believe the poaching risk on Feiniano is too high.
- 11:21[SPEAKER_00]: So I'll talk about this more in Friday morning, GM, but that is a possibility.
- 11:25[SPEAKER_00]: Bagnano is stood in very well.
- 11:27[SPEAKER_00]: That's a great trait for making a roster.
- 11:29[SPEAKER_00]: It's a bad trait for being healthy enough to be on the roster.
- 11:33[SPEAKER_00]: So Ravens need to kind of be sure of where they are in terms of Bagnano and if they want to carry him as a third cubius, one of the options they have.
- 11:45[SPEAKER_00]: One more thing, I think, on offense, or two more things.
- 11:48[SPEAKER_00]: What do they need to see from Adam Randall at this point?
- 11:51[SPEAKER_00]: Now Randall missed the last game.
- 11:53[SPEAKER_00]: I do not believe he'll sit this game, ideally he'll get some steps.
- 11:57[SPEAKER_00]: And I want to see him as a past blocker more than anything else.
- 12:01[SPEAKER_00]: So maybe they could make him be a third down back in this game or you know, have,
- 12:05[SPEAKER_00]: two to four carries, but not more than that.
- 12:07[SPEAKER_00]: And primarily, use own passing downs.
- 12:09[SPEAKER_00]: Let's see him as a receiver.
- 12:11[SPEAKER_00]: And more importantly, let's see him as a pass blocker.
- 12:13[SPEAKER_00]: The Ravens pass blocking from their running backs this preseason has been absolutely atrocious.
- 12:19[SPEAKER_00]: Everyone has failed at it.
- 12:21[SPEAKER_00]: McMillan, Tautaliver, Ward, all of them.
- 12:24[SPEAKER_00]: And I don't really see any reason not to put Randall
- 12:30[SPEAKER_00]: in situations like that, in a game like this, that means nothing when you're really trying to figure out how he has gone anywhere towards figuring that out, and you know, the alternative would be somebody like Ward might give you your best chance.
- 12:42[SPEAKER_00]: And of course, Henry, we know is a good pass blocker.
- 12:46[SPEAKER_00]: Hill was a good pass blocker once upon a time.
- 12:48[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think we know any more if he's really that guy.
- 12:52[SPEAKER_00]: And Adam Randall, you know, he's a big high cut guy and he could be a guy who becomes a good pass blocker.
- 12:57[SPEAKER_00]: But anyway, we need to see that again.
- 12:59[SPEAKER_00]: Last point on offense, they could showcase Russian Oli.
- 13:02[SPEAKER_00]: I think he's his chance to make the roster is fading fairly quickly.
- 13:06[SPEAKER_00]: He is healthy now, he's back and practicing and he was in the joint practice today.
- 13:11[SPEAKER_00]: So he could be back in this game, Eddie could get time as a kickoff returner.
- 13:15[SPEAKER_00]: Any good time is a runner for that matter and honestly at this point.
- 13:18[SPEAKER_00]: I'd say I don't want to use that spot on eight that the 25th offense of spot on a fourth running back So I would Showcase Ali if he has trade value fantastic If you cut him any any you want to be getting back on the practice squad hopefully that works and if it doesn't well
- 13:36[SPEAKER_00]: You know, you got to move on and you got to find somebody else.
- 13:39[SPEAKER_00]: And I think Randall and Wester and maybe Hill if needed can return kicks and so can other players that they might elevate on a weekly basis were serrat.
- 13:49[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, they have other options in terms of returning kickoffs and I'm not that's often cited as a significant portion of all these value and I don't think there's enough to carry him onto the roster all by itself.
- 14:02[SPEAKER_00]: All right.
- 14:02[SPEAKER_00]: We'll take a break and we'll come right back.
- 14:06[SPEAKER_00]: Alright folks, we're back and we want to talk a little bit about what we're going to see on defense as well.
- 14:11[SPEAKER_00]: And I want to start a corner back where I don't think we'll see any of the three big corner backs.
- 14:17[SPEAKER_00]: In fact, that's like the understate of the year that I don't think we will.
- 14:20[SPEAKER_00]: We won't see any of those three guys.
- 14:22[SPEAKER_00]: Just so I'll lose you a hub free and wagons, what they none of them will play.
- 14:25[SPEAKER_00]: They've played in the in the joy practice.
- 14:27[SPEAKER_00]: I would say,
- 14:30[SPEAKER_00]: Each of them had a flash today of some sort.
- 14:33[SPEAKER_00]: It was he also got beat for a touchdown.
- 14:35[SPEAKER_00]: He's one of the only guys where that happened, but he also made a good play.
- 14:39[SPEAKER_00]: Humphrey made a nice play with a past offense.
- 14:42[SPEAKER_00]: And Wiggins made a nice downhill play on a past after the catch.
- 14:50[SPEAKER_00]: So,
- 14:51[SPEAKER_00]: very happy with where all three of those guys are.
- 14:53[SPEAKER_00]: In fact, a Humphrey's way ahead of where I thought he would be at this point.
- 14:58[SPEAKER_00]: And I wouldn't expect to see them.
- 15:00[SPEAKER_00]: Then you have Tampa is the fourth quarter.
- 15:02[SPEAKER_00]: So I think it's probably time to put Tampa and bubble wrap.
- 15:05[SPEAKER_00]: I talked about that at the top of the show.
- 15:07[SPEAKER_00]: I am also expecting no Kone in this game.
- 15:10[SPEAKER_00]: That would be an enormous upset if he came back for the game that syntax that midter used tells me he's not playing
- 15:20[SPEAKER_00]: To the Ravens want to create roster flexibility by leaving him out for the first four weeks of the season since he does have an injury right now.
- 15:28[SPEAKER_00]: I think that's a very reasonable thing to try and do to extend your roster over the course of the season.
- 15:34[SPEAKER_00]: The Ravens have done that to get advantage of that IRDTR functionality.
- 15:39[SPEAKER_00]: for years now since it was introduced.
- 15:41[SPEAKER_00]: It actually came in and COVID that you got the two extra spots for it.
- 15:45[SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, a really positive thing to try and do I think for the roster as a whole.
- 15:53[SPEAKER_00]: Cone is the fifth.
- 15:54[SPEAKER_00]: outside corner back as things stand right now so it's not like you're likely to get down to that point during the first four weeks and having him as a guy who can be ready to return gives you a quite a bit of flexibility and certainly will be injuries at that position.
- 16:11[SPEAKER_00]: Alright, then after that, the question is rightly who should play at the outside during this preseason game?
- 16:20[SPEAKER_00]: The answer is Robertson and longer beam, who are two guys who are absolutely
- 16:26[SPEAKER_00]: right on the fringe of the roster should be playing for the pretty much the last spot.
- 16:32[SPEAKER_00]: So if you put Kone on IR, then you've got a last spot to either Robinson or longer beam, and I'm assuming both rivers and Martin make it, which I think is correct.
- 16:40[SPEAKER_00]: It could trade one, but I think both will make it.
- 16:43[SPEAKER_00]: but Robinson and longer being then you got one spot for between those two guys and and let them play it out here.
- 16:51[SPEAKER_00]: They both played well and longer being as played very well this preseason and Robinson has played very well over two pre seasons.
- 16:59[SPEAKER_00]: You might lose either one, if you caught them, you probably would not lose either one right away.
- 17:04[SPEAKER_00]: So it would be a matter of six weeks, eight weeks, possibly 10 weeks, these guys would still be on your practice squad, not yet claimed, but you can bet two events will cause claims.
- 17:18[SPEAKER_00]: One is they'll be claimed when attrition gets to a point that they're trying to figure out who the next best cornerback is available.
- 17:25[SPEAKER_00]: And that could happen as early as October.
- 17:28[SPEAKER_00]: in terms of, I mean, they would rise to the top of the list by October.
- 17:34[SPEAKER_00]: If you're talking about, you know, teams looking to the future though, that's even a bigger risk.
- 17:39[SPEAKER_00]: That there'll be some teams that'll be out of it in November and December.
- 17:43[SPEAKER_00]: And they will want to, uh, the have an opening on their roster, or they won't particularly value the roster spot or the player they have currently there, and they will just cut them with the option to pick up a longer beam or a Robinson who has multiple years of team control.
- 17:57[SPEAKER_00]: And that would certainly be a, um, a smart move if, if they can pull it off and some bad teams, they, that's exactly what they consider doing.
- 18:05[SPEAKER_00]: So anyway, I talked about that in the, uh,
- 18:13[SPEAKER_00]: Now, alternatively, you could have Laura Warrior in the first half at corner, because you probably need him in the safety in the second half.
- 18:21[SPEAKER_00]: So, I think it'll be Wallace and Wolters to start the game and Wolters probably plays the whole game and he pears up with Laura Warrior in the second half.
- 18:32[SPEAKER_00]: Cadre Jackson probably plays a couple series and then he's out would be my guess.
- 18:36[SPEAKER_00]: He's by the first to retire of This safety group, and I think he's got the he's got the lock on that number four safety spot Wallace would be in my in my mind.
- 18:48[SPEAKER_00]: Oh
- 18:49[SPEAKER_00]: extreme lunch out is probably too much, but I don't see that he brings the roster value that either a longer being or Robinson do who's the people who are maybe competing for the 25th spot on defense is you're probably going to have 11 guys between safety and corner and I think that the most valuable of those is one of those two younger corner backs that have either three or four years of play left with the team as opposed to Wallace who's
- 19:18[SPEAKER_00]: So Wallace, no shade intended, I think he could still play, would go on the practice squad and be the first man up if something happened to one of the Ravens' safety.
- 19:28[SPEAKER_00]: So we better hope that that situation does not occur because those guys have the heart and soul of team.
- 19:33[SPEAKER_00]: So anyway, Wallace, I think that's where he'll end up is at the top of the practice squad.
- 19:39[SPEAKER_00]: All right, let's move on to inside lineback.
- 19:41[SPEAKER_00]: I agree to have a bunch of injuries there.
- 19:43[SPEAKER_00]: Johnson, Jaman, Johnson, that is, got injured.
- 19:46[SPEAKER_00]: I think he hurt his thumb pushing somebody out of bounds.
- 19:49[SPEAKER_00]: He was only in for a few plays.
- 19:50[SPEAKER_00]: Willoughford actually got hurt on his very first snap of special teams.
- 19:54[SPEAKER_00]: Didn't even play a snap of defense in this last game against the Vikings.
- 19:58[SPEAKER_00]: And Carl Jones is a bit out for some time now.
- 20:00[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know if Carl Jones is approaching a time.
- 20:03[SPEAKER_00]: When he would be Iard for the season or whatever they may be close to try to figure out an injury So I'm not with him there could be a lot of things But it seems kind of remote that he would make the team at this point given that the I think they're they've got four guys that they really want to go with Higgins played 60 snaps in the second game after coming back from a concussion
- 20:25[SPEAKER_00]: I think they will play him some in this game, but they also signed Michael Barrett, who is an NFL veteran of several years.
- 20:34[SPEAKER_00]: And he is here to play this one game only, actually, because the season is third year.
- 20:39[SPEAKER_00]: He's played a lot of preseason staffs never in the regular season.
- 20:42[SPEAKER_00]: and so he'd be a guy that's coming in here to get a little tape, Michigan guy from three years ago, and would be a guy that plays with Higgins and Taluka, and they get through the game with those three.
- 20:56[SPEAKER_00]: So already we're talking about those guys taking on a heavier workload,
- 21:00[SPEAKER_00]: Perfect.
- 21:01[SPEAKER_00]: We happy about it.
- 21:01[SPEAKER_00]: I bet Higgins is he probably is perfectly happy about it because he loves playing football And you can really see that in the way runs around and hits, but on the other hand they need to get kind of healthy for the regular season.
- 21:10[SPEAKER_00]: So you get a half out of Michael Barrett at least Possibly more and then You know Higgins will hopefully play maybe three series the first half
- 21:20[SPEAKER_00]: All right, move to the defensive line.
- 21:22[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not sure what they are going to do with Brandon, sorry, with Washington, brought a question.
- 21:29[SPEAKER_00]: He's had enough snaps already in this preseason to showcase his values, a run defender.
- 21:36[SPEAKER_00]: memes aside, he's played very well as a run defender this preseason.
- 21:40[SPEAKER_00]: I don't see, on the other hand, how it makes sense for him to make the team.
- 21:44[SPEAKER_00]: I think this team has too much young talent and too much of a potential 2027 roster disaster about to happen on the DL.
- 21:55[SPEAKER_00]: for them to give up on players like Rishan Bany or NES Peoples without a fight.
- 22:01[SPEAKER_00]: So I think that they'll probably end up either cutting or trading Washington.
- 22:06[SPEAKER_00]: Cutting him is not the worst thing, because even though he's got $2 million of cap this year, 750,000 is guaranteed by the ravens that are stuck with it no matter what.
- 22:16[SPEAKER_00]: 1.25 million is incremental to that.
- 22:19[SPEAKER_00]: If they trade him, somebody takes that 1.25 million on right away, if somebody decides they want him at some point the season could be two weeks now, four weeks from now, whatever it is because their defensive line depth is thin.
- 22:32[SPEAKER_00]: then broader goes to them and there's offset language I would be fairly sure in this contract that's going to allow the ravens to recapture that most of that 1.25 million.
- 22:43[SPEAKER_00]: So that's probably pretty close to the broader minimum salary, maybe it's 1.1, maybe it's 1.2.
- 22:49[SPEAKER_00]: But anyway, assuming he played the whole season, they'd almost lose nothing out of that amount.
- 22:55[SPEAKER_00]: And that might have been how the negotiated to the point that they got to.
- 23:02[SPEAKER_00]: They knew that a certain amount of guaranteed money they were going to have to pay because Brodick was agreeing to a lower salary.
- 23:09[SPEAKER_00]: But on the other hand, they also had, they knew they would recover a decent amount, even in the case of a cut.
- 23:20[SPEAKER_00]: We'll bring you anything, but there may be a team that's lower down or that doesn't want to take the risk of losing another team that would say try to conditional 7th form.
- 23:28[SPEAKER_00]: And the condition would probably be such that the Ravens don't collect on that.
- 23:33[SPEAKER_00]: But it could be a conditional 7th.
- 23:35[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, there could be various reasons, various ways they could structure it, but my guess is the Ravens would not end up collecting on a seventh round pick for, for Broderick.
- 23:45[SPEAKER_00]: And yet the, the real reason that they've wanted them around camps, if I was to make sure that their depth held up with all of the injury problems, all the PUP, they had coming into camp.
- 23:56[SPEAKER_00]: and I just I think it makes sense for him not to play.
- 24:00[SPEAKER_00]: They've got six defensive linemen.
- 24:02[SPEAKER_00]: That's more than enough to get through an NFL game.
- 24:04[SPEAKER_00]: In fact, you know, the number, the critical number for me is five that you need.
- 24:08[SPEAKER_00]: And in a preseason game, you typically want more, but they got a bunch of young guys that they can actually look at among the other six that they they have playing.
- 24:16[SPEAKER_00]: That's Peebles, Olegiga, Akoya, Benny, Dion Wilson, and Aaron Graves.
- 24:23[SPEAKER_00]: And I go, I don't want to be callous about this, but I'm going to say this because it's probably goes into the Ravens thinking about it.
- 24:31[SPEAKER_00]: If you had an injury to any of people's Benny or a Coie, it would be bad, but it would also create an opportunity to unlock a roster spot by using a non-season ending IR designation on one of them.
- 24:46[SPEAKER_00]: Whether that's with or without a handshake deal that you have to get that put in place.
- 24:50[SPEAKER_00]: So it could be if it's spot 54 or 55 they have the spot free if it's spot 56 they might have to go to John Jenkins say and say hey
- 25:01[SPEAKER_00]: We want you to take a handshake deal.
- 25:02[SPEAKER_00]: We're going to cut you right now and then we intend to resign you immediately.
- 25:05[SPEAKER_00]: Please understand this is our way and Jenkins because he's a veteran does not go through the waiver process.
- 25:14[SPEAKER_00]: And so no other team can claim him.
- 25:16[SPEAKER_00]: It's just a matter of whether or not Jenkins would sign with another team.
- 25:18[SPEAKER_00]: He's immediately made a free agent upon cutting.
- 25:21[SPEAKER_00]: And then when the Ravens move whoever they put him a roster over to,
- 25:27[SPEAKER_00]: a IRDTR status, a short-term IR status, then they can bring back, because they can resign Jenkins.
- 25:39[SPEAKER_00]: And possibly even give them an extra $25 or $50,000.
- 25:42[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know what they do in that situation if there's any kind of a small incremental amount that they would give them.
- 25:48[SPEAKER_00]: But anyway,
- 25:49[SPEAKER_00]: That's I think the way this will play out.
- 25:52[SPEAKER_00]: Jenkins is kind of a similar situation.
- 25:54[SPEAKER_00]: They certainly don't want the responsibility for a fully or salary if he's heard.
- 25:58[SPEAKER_00]: There is less value there, but there's per game roster bonuses and there's other things.
- 26:03[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know what the rules are on him earning things like that.
- 26:07[SPEAKER_00]: If he's hurt, he may not get credit for those, but he's got some liability to playing there, and again, I think you have enough players that you don't need to put Jenkins at risk for this game.
- 26:21[SPEAKER_00]: So he might be a seventh guy that the Ravens would consider sitting out for this one.
- 26:26[SPEAKER_00]: Alright, now one of the really interesting positions still left is outside linebacker because they've got four locks and they've got three guys who are in very close competition for that final spot and each of them had, you know, things they showed today that would tell me they might be the guy, Rucker had a couple plays today, I thought that including a sack on a, he blitzed unblocked.
- 26:49[SPEAKER_00]: And also a nice past rush when he had during the one-on-one past rush drills.
- 26:53[SPEAKER_00]: I decided to didn't do anything specific today.
- 26:55[SPEAKER_00]: Ethan Burke actually didn't have a great day.
- 26:58[SPEAKER_00]: I got pancakeed once, had some problems in the past rush drill being neutralized.
- 27:03[SPEAKER_00]: So I think that, you know, Rucker probably took a step forward among the three in the joint practice today.
- 27:08[SPEAKER_00]: But that OO5 spot, as far as I'm concerned, is completely up for grabs among those three players.
- 27:13[SPEAKER_00]: And I think a very reasonable thing to do is just rotate those guys throughout the game.
- 27:18[SPEAKER_00]: two at a time and try them out on both sides and here's the other thing.
- 27:23[SPEAKER_00]: Then you get a chance to use some coverage drops on each of them too and see if you want to make that a consideration in the roster position.
- 27:31[SPEAKER_00]: Ethan Burke dropped five times to cover in the last game and one of those he knocked the ball out after the completion for a force fumble.
- 27:39[SPEAKER_00]: So, you rucker could get more time dropping to cover.
- 27:43[SPEAKER_00]: Let's see what he's got or a decent Isaac can do the same thing.
- 27:46[SPEAKER_00]: I've always supposed that if three guys he might have the best athleticism to be a Sam linebacker, but they need to find somebody who could do that because they have a bunch of guys who are rushed linebackers right now and they really need to figure out.
- 27:58[SPEAKER_00]: Who do they want to drop?
- 28:00[SPEAKER_00]: And by the way, claims are being made, including by Anthony Weaver about how versatile these guys are in terms of being able to drop and what their football IQ is Some of it's actually athleticism.
- 28:09[SPEAKER_00]: They have to actually be able to speak sticky be instinctive as a as a dropping player and see if that works and I
- 28:19[SPEAKER_00]: that takes reps. And it's one of the frustrating things about trying to find these guys coming out of college is none of them tend to have very many total reps in that department.
- 28:30[SPEAKER_00]: So anyway, I think that that would make a lot of sense to just try and go with three outside line backers for this game.
- 28:36[SPEAKER_00]: They need to have, by the way, some back up plan and whether it's
- 28:39[SPEAKER_00]: you know, Aaron Graves or one of the other defensive linemen would move over to play an outside linebacker spot if they suffered an injury.
- 28:47[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, they need to have that ready to go in their back pocket.
- 28:50[SPEAKER_00]: But they, you know, that being said, rotating these three guys makes a lot of sense doing.
- 28:56[SPEAKER_00]: Anyway, that's going to do it.
- 28:57[SPEAKER_00]: I hope you enjoy the game on Friday night.
- 28:59[SPEAKER_00]: I'm certainly looking forward to it as I do all preseason football.
- 29:01[SPEAKER_00]: Hey, all football.
- 29:02[SPEAKER_00]: What am I talking about?
- 29:04[SPEAKER_00]: And look for more detail on performances from the second preseason game on a film study Baltimore.com in the article, or it's also in podcast form out there as well.
- 29:15[SPEAKER_00]: And you'll have those same podcasts out Sunday and Monday for the defense and offense.
- 29:19[SPEAKER_00]: Respectively,
- 29:20[SPEAKER_00]: from the third preseason game.
- 29:22[SPEAKER_00]: Those versions will be somewhat shorter because a lot of the players will already know by 6pm on Sunday night, whether or not they're still bought more ravens or not.
- 29:33[SPEAKER_00]: And we want to just have a minimal amount of total grading and analysis of that game.
- 29:39[SPEAKER_00]: Appreciate you guys.
- 29:39[SPEAKER_00]: Great, you used to film studying the old bag at gmail.com for your questions.
- 29:42[SPEAKER_00]: And we'll talk to you next time on film site.
