- 0:23Now let's get into today's topic.
- 0:27His family and what he's done and you know, I'm very proud of
- 0:31our podcast and unfortunately, he's not been a guest on my
- 0:33podcast. However, if you Google his name,
- 0:35if you're a podcast listener and Google his name and plus
- 0:38podcast, he was recently, a few months ago this summer was on a
- 0:42podcast by and I'm forgetting everything that I don't remember
- 0:44the name of the podcast. I don't remember the name of the
- 0:46host. He's a coach up in the Chicago
- 0:48area. If I said his name, half of you
- 0:49guys would know who he is. But he did a really good job
- 0:53with his interview and Britain did a really good job of
- 0:56explaining his background and coaching philosophy and stuff
- 0:59like that. So if you're a podcast listener,
- 1:01highly recommend you find that episode.
- 1:03You won't find it on my podcast, unfortunately.
- 1:05Brandon and I actually got to to know each other when he was the
- 1:08head coach at his alma mater, Eastern Illinois.
- 1:11Anybody ever heard of Eastern? Yeah, just down down the road.
- 1:14I guess it's down down the road when I'm in Champaign.
- 1:16It's down the road if maybe it's a another hop and skip down.
- 1:19But of course, the state. Neat there at East Illinois,
- 1:22which reminds me, this is a quick plug for Gil Athletics
- 1:25starting this year, 2026, Gil Athletics is the official
- 1:28equipment provider for your state meet here Illinois.
- 1:30Thank you very much. I appreciate that.
- 1:32So your kids, your athletes will be jumping on brand new pits,
- 1:36high jump pits, football pits, hurdles, starting blocks,
- 1:39etcetera. So it's something, you know,
- 1:42we're an Illinois based company and it's important for us to
- 1:44support our Illinois based coaches and athletes.
- 1:46So that's a that's a lot of fun down there on the Big Blue.
- 1:49But I got to meet coach here when he was at Eastern Illinois
- 1:51and we became friends and had a lot of good talks.
- 1:53And then he moved farther away. He went to Nebraska.
- 1:55I was like, well, man, I don't get to see my guy very much
- 1:58anymore. And that wasn't that was still
- 1:59too close. He, he left me to go to the West
- 2:01Coast. Now I, I only get to see him at
- 2:03the nationals and regionals. And the good news is his program
- 2:07and what he does, he's good enough.
- 2:08He gets kids there every year. So I'm going to see him there
- 2:11every year. One of the things that's
- 2:12constant is change and today, yesterday, today and tomorrow,
- 2:19and probably by the time he's done with his speech, it will
- 2:21have changed at that point as well.
- 2:23That's the landscape of recruiting and what's going on.
- 2:27OK, some good, maybe not some not so good.
- 2:29But we all have to adapt. And that's what track and field
- 2:32coaches around the country, including right here, do in
- 2:36spades. As you adapt, you ask your kids
- 2:38to adapt, you adapt, and that's what we're going to have to do.
- 2:40So, speaking on the new landscape of recruiting, help me
- 2:43welcome from the great USC, the mighty Trojans, Britain.
- 2:46Emmanuel, thank you Mike. I really appreciate the intro
- 2:52man. You know, I'm from Illinois
- 2:55originally. I wish I could come back, but I
- 2:58have 4 kids and yesterday was Halloween as you guys know, and
- 3:01so I miss enough important days of their life that I could have
- 3:05missed Halloween yesterday. I'm tired from that.
- 3:07We were out till at 9:30, which was, as you know, a lot when you
- 3:11have 4 kids on the on the age of seven.
- 3:13But yeah, so I'm going to talk to you guys about recruiting.
- 3:18Obviously, like Mike mentioned, I've been to different schools
- 3:21I've visit. I was at East Illinois
- 3:22University, Illinois State, University of Nebraska, now USC,
- 3:27and so I have a pretty good understanding of all the like
- 3:29the platform for it and some of the new rules that are have kind
- 3:33of come up recently. But you know, what I'm going to
- 3:36talk about is, you know, roster limits, scholarship standards,
- 3:40NIL, the transfer portal, and then maybe just, you know,
- 3:43trying to help you guys navigate your student athletes as they
- 3:46contact us and what to see in those emails kind of going
- 3:51forward. So I think the first biggest
- 3:53thing I get a lot of time is, you know, I hear people ask, do
- 3:56you guys still have scholarship standards or sorry, do you guys
- 3:58have walk ONS still? Yes, we do.
- 4:01This blade ruled maybe about a a year or two ago that our
- 4:04rostrums are going down be down to 45 and then we have the
- 4:07opportunity to be at 45 scholarships, both men and
- 4:11women. Now, let's be honest here.
- 4:13If you're, if you're at a school that has football, you're not
- 4:16going to be at 45 scholarships. I think most SC schools, SCC
- 4:19schools around at least the higher end ones around 35 for
- 4:23both men and women. I know we can operate a little
- 4:26bit differently here, so I know we're closer to that number, if
- 4:30not a little, maybe a little bit higher, but we're right around
- 4:32there as well. But there still is walk on
- 4:35opportunities. The biggest thing I will tell
- 4:38you guys as you guys are encourage your students, you
- 4:40guys are coaching them up is to go on the school's website and
- 4:43look for the recruiting standards.
- 4:45A lot of times, you know, yesterday I went to my inbox and
- 4:48I had 300 some emails from recruits and, and coaches across
- 4:52the country, one opportunity for their male or female hurdler,
- 4:56male or male or female sprinter. And some of them, I would say
- 5:0095% did not hit our scholars with Sanders.
- 5:02Now I say that not because USC is, is is a different anomaly
- 5:07than other schools, but you know, we do look at every little
- 5:11thing. One, our academic standards here
- 5:14are almost Ivy League essentially.
- 5:18But to get a kid admitted to USC, I have to write a two page
- 5:20paper on the kids academic and athletic accolades and then it
- 5:24goes to a committee and they vote on it.
- 5:26Not every school is like that, but here USC is pretty tough.
- 5:30So you know, last year I I had a coach from Illinois.
- 5:33I would say, you know, we're we're friendly.
- 5:35I don't I wouldn't say we're friends necessarily, but we're
- 5:37friendly. Was wanting me to recruit one of
- 5:40his his athletes. And you know, I looked at her
- 5:43times and she's a good athlete. I think most mid major schools
- 5:46would take care. But he's like coach, can I just
- 5:48fire out to USC? Well, yes, I could fire to USC,
- 5:52but also can get fired for doing things that are outside of my,
- 5:54you know, outside my recruiting standards too.
- 5:57And he was having a hard time understanding like I couldn't do
- 5:58him a favor. So I tell you these things
- 6:02because the recruiting standards are all this and above.
- 6:04And sometimes I think coaches will roast a college coach based
- 6:08on why you recruiting my kid. And so like for instance,
- 6:12yesterday I was talking to the Sprint coach at University of
- 6:15Michigan and we were going through our recruiting
- 6:17standards. He saw that I was talking here.
- 6:19So he asked, he asked me what I was going to talk about.
- 6:20And I said, well, I'm going to talk about you guys in Michigan
- 6:23because their recruiting standards technically are higher
- 6:27than US CS and Georgia's and some other events.
- 6:30Now you may ask why is that? Well, for them, they have to
- 6:34compete against us. And so his head coach is a
- 6:38distance coach, University of Georgia, USC, the head coach of
- 6:41their Sprint coaches. So there's a little bit more
- 6:44leeway and understanding when it comes to those events.
- 6:47You know, I think I'll, I'll pull it real quick.
- 6:49I shouldn't have the top of my head, but I just know what I
- 6:51want. You know, for the men, you know,
- 6:53it's 1020 in the 120.75 in the 200 is what ideally we're
- 6:57looking for scholarship. Well, Michigan is 10/25 and
- 7:0320/20/70 and then 46, one in the 400.
- 7:06Now our 401 is a little bit is 4580.
- 7:09University of Georgia on the men's side, they're looking at
- 7:12102520.55 and then 4620. Now all of us have had success
- 7:18in in different areas, you know, at the national meet, but there
- 7:22is a, there's a different standard for certain schools
- 7:27because of the head coach. So like for me, if he gets a
- 7:3020.70 kid, that kid probably won't will not get a full ride
- 7:33at Michigan. They'll probably get tuition at
- 7:35USC. That kid will probably get a
- 7:36full ride because we are speed power base.
- 7:39We only deal in full rights because it costs $97,000 to go
- 7:42here. And so you may have to look at
- 7:44the standards that are being provided to each student.
- 7:48So I encourage you guys before you roast, you know, a coach,
- 7:51you know, whether that's Illinois State or Illinois or
- 7:53whatever it may be or even, you know, all of that would Coach
- 7:57Rose Johnson make sure you look at the standards because they
- 8:01are different. And and sometimes you know, that
- 8:04the hedge found who the head coach is.
- 8:06The standard may be really hard to hit.
- 8:07You know, when I was at the University of Nebraska, you
- 8:09know, I would have had a kid on campus around 21 flat 4688.
- 8:13Well, that same kid here is worth a full ride and Nebraska,
- 8:17he's worth 60%. Now you ask, why is that?
- 8:19Nebraska is not as good as in the sprints.
- 8:22They're going for throws and jumps as as USC.
- 8:25Well, for them, you know, they don't feel as comfortable
- 8:27investing in those Sprint events because their their bread and
- 8:31butter is, is throws in distance.
- 8:33So it's not always the coaches is not wanting your kid or not
- 8:36wanting to think your kids is good enough is sometimes the
- 8:39standards that are set above them.
- 8:40And looking at the head coach and and kind of seeing how they
- 8:42operate is is their team imposed of more distance throws or
- 8:46jumps, whatever it may be. That's probably the reason why
- 8:49they're probably not getting the money and the coaches is nose
- 8:52not to waste the family's time or your time by saying, Hey, I
- 8:55can only give the kid 1525%. I mean, we had a girl, it's a 41
- 9:01second 300 hurdle when I was in Nebraska.
- 9:03Luckily she was really good academically and she was covered
- 9:06to be a fool, but he was only one to give her 25%.
- 9:10Has she not had the academic side behind her?
- 9:12She wasn't going to get into school and she probably wouldn't
- 9:14have gone there. So sometimes I do think, you
- 9:17know, I think we cost goes to get bad names because they're
- 9:19like, you're not recruiting my kid.
- 9:21Well, let's look at the situation behind it.
- 9:23It's going to help you guys understand.
- 9:25It's not that we don't want your kid.
- 9:26We also don't want to get fired either.
- 9:27So we have to look navigate in a certain way to make sure that we
- 9:31are heading the standard set by for our head coach and some
- 9:34certain programs. When I first came to USC, the
- 9:37head coach, you know, mentioned to me like, Hey, with the new
- 9:39rules coming down, we should look at the portal a little bit
- 9:42more. And so last year, my first year
- 9:44here, I just focus on the men's women's hurdles and then this
- 9:47year I do men's women's hurdles and men's sprints.
- 9:49But last shot he's I just focus on the portal.
- 9:51Well, again, I fall into this situation where the portal is
- 9:55great. There's a lot of good hurdles
- 9:56out there, but the academic standard at USC is, you know,
- 10:00you, you better have you better be close to four point O you
- 10:03know, if you're, if you're average, average athlete, but
- 10:06you're going to have really good grades.
- 10:07Essentially, I can't take someone who's a 2.5.
- 10:09You have has AD in math, you have AD in math.
- 10:12Don't even try to come to USC. You will not get, you know, you
- 10:14will not go through the subcommittee.
- 10:16My coach would not allow it. So, you know, we also don't take
- 10:19one year transfers because our academic standards are so high.
- 10:22A lot of their classes do not transfer in.
- 10:24And so, you know, going to the Porter Porter route for me
- 10:27wasn't going to be successful. So now I'm looking more at high
- 10:29school for men's hurdlers because the ones I, I came
- 10:33across last year, they were very talented, would help our our
- 10:36brand of being national champions.
- 10:38But again, the academic channel was too high.
- 10:40And so again, it's not that, you know, we don't want your kid,
- 10:43but it may be the head coach's vision for the program to that
- 10:46he wants you to go and follow the transfer portal and get a
- 10:50kid that could score quickly. And so with that, that's
- 10:52probably hurt some of the high school recruiting.
- 10:55And I think one thing that, you know, I've been talking to my
- 10:58former high school coach about, you know, there's a girl he
- 11:00wants me to recruit from his program.
- 11:02And I grant, I don't coach the 400 like I do.
- 11:05We work, we work together here at USC like we're very good at
- 11:08collabing with each other. I cover the this morning we had
- 11:10practice. I cover the women's friends in
- 11:12my groups. I've been working with the 400,
- 11:15you know, every single day. So it's not like I don't coach
- 11:17the 400, but coach Wash is the main guy and he's like, you
- 11:20know, how do I get her interested to him?
- 11:23So I, I said, you know, when you look our recruiting standards,
- 11:27make sure that you know the time that she's, she's relatively
- 11:30close to like you don't have to be exactly 1025 to get off.
- 11:33If you're 1035, you have the perfect build, great grades.
- 11:37Most likely we're going to give you a scholarship.
- 11:39However, you know, if you're kind of, you know, maybe if I
- 11:42say that for her, it's just like she's a 53 second girl.
- 11:45Our standards like 52 five South in this e-mail, say write it.
- 11:49Write in my e-mail, you tag me in it.
- 11:51Just make it short and sweet. Sometimes we get these long
- 11:53drawn out emails and I'm in Coach Watts and I are very
- 11:55similar. After the 1st 2 lines I'm done
- 11:58reading it. If I don't see something pop
- 11:59out, I can't do it anymore because I have again, like I
- 12:01told you guys, I have 300 emails I had to go through yesterday
- 12:04and it has to pop out. So I'll say make it, you know,
- 12:06talk about their GPA, talk about their top events.
- 12:10And then if you have a video of them racing instead of else, you
- 12:13know, Coach Watts is not, you know, some of the old coaches
- 12:14are not good with social media. So him searching Instagram for a
- 12:18video, someone running is not going to happen.
- 12:20So if you can, if you can attach a video to it and say, Hey, this
- 12:24is a you know, for him, he's at least a 4x4.
- 12:26Like she ran a stage where she hawked down 3 girls and almost
- 12:29beat the girl. This at the University of Oregon
- 12:31distance girl Allison. Thence I think it is was her
- 12:33name. I'm not sure, but don't don't,
- 12:35don't quiz me on this, please. I'm trying to you know, I'm out
- 12:37of Illinois as much as I used to be.
- 12:38So I might as good with Illinois names like I used to be, but
- 12:43just make it short and sweet and, and have them look at the
- 12:45spelling of the emails. So many times I get our names
- 12:48are spelled wrong or they have the wrong university in the
- 12:51e-mail, you know, so like, hey, I'm interested in UCLA.
- 12:54Well, I can tell you right now, you e-mail USC talking about
- 12:56UCLA, that thing's getting deleted ASAP, you know.
- 13:02So, but you know, I would just say you just encourage them to
- 13:06reach out and and not just don't send one e-mail If there's other
- 13:09coaches on social media, like if I get an e-mail about a woman's
- 13:11printer, I always pass along to Coach Watts.
- 13:13I always pass along to Coach Goodman and vice versa.
- 13:17So try social media, reach out that way, but be straight to the
- 13:20point when you're encouraging them.
- 13:21And if you can reach out to us as well and give us an honest
- 13:24opinion about the student athlete, that is very helpful as
- 13:27well. Because a lot of times, you
- 13:29know, I think everybody wants their kid to go somewhere big
- 13:31and really nice because it it makes the school look better.
- 13:34But there's times that coach may ask a question and we don't
- 13:37always get an honest answer. And so that kind of burns the
- 13:39the bridge of trust because it's like, hey, is this kid good?
- 13:42Oh, it's like, yeah, kid was good.
- 13:43But I always have this problem of them not being on time to
- 13:47practice. Well, you should have told us
- 13:48that, you know, because we can't fix everything.
- 13:50Little things that they don't do, like they play up, they
- 13:52still playing video games all night.
- 13:54Well, it gets worse in college because now they are on their
- 13:58own and we don't have access to their dorms.
- 13:59We can't run out their parent. So some of those little things,
- 14:02you think it may hinder the situation that doesn't.
- 14:05It just allows us to understand the recruit in the best possible
- 14:08way because again, a lot of our livelihoods are dependent on
- 14:11these kids coming here and producing.
- 14:12So knowing those little things, coach possible ask every single
- 14:15crew or ask their coach or ask their parent what is something
- 14:18we have to be prepared for, for that student athlete to be
- 14:21successful here. A lot of times, you know,
- 14:22parents are like, oh, well, they're, they're, they're good,
- 14:24They work hard. And then, you know, sometimes as
- 14:27he keeps prodding and asking, they'll be like, well, his time
- 14:30management, her time is not very good.
- 14:31It's like, OK, well, we can work with that.
- 14:33We have support systems for that.
- 14:34We have things that can align to help those students, those
- 14:37student athletes out. And so I tell you just to be
- 14:40straightforward and don't try to, you know, make it sound good
- 14:43because yes, we are. If we're interested, we're
- 14:44reaching out. We want the kid, but tell us the
- 14:46whole landscape. Don't give us a little the
- 14:48little bit of peace. Like, oh, they're really fast
- 14:50and they work really hard, but you didn't tell me they're
- 14:52smoking weed and drinking every single weekend while they're in
- 14:54high school like that. Things I need to know, you know,
- 14:57because again, we're taking chances, you know, there's only
- 15:00free like USC. We have a roster #30 and 35.
- 15:03So we're not been doing a full 45.
- 15:06One is is more for our quality of coaching and we're just going
- 15:08to stick to our full rides situation.
- 15:10We do have a couple walk ONS here, but again, if you're
- 15:12walking out here, you're paying $97,000.
- 15:14So maybe you guys have that type of money.
- 15:17But I can tell you my kids will not be walking on the USC.
- 15:19I'm glad I have. We have a tuition waiver, but
- 15:21again, that's in about 20 some years.
- 15:22So that's not going to happen. But, you know, be honest about
- 15:26those little things. It is crazy, you know, but I do.
- 15:29I do think a lot of people are thinking, oh, high school, high
- 15:32school students are just not being recruited.
- 15:33That's not true. We want high school kids.
- 15:35We want really good because we want to be here for four years
- 15:37and not the ones that are wanting to take 20 visits and
- 15:40then, you know, take, you know, take some photos in the uniform,
- 15:43like be honest with us about those things because sometimes
- 15:46we don't know, like everyone sounds good.
- 15:47Everyone looks good on social media.
- 15:49Just like as a coach, we can present ourselves as this
- 15:52perfect coach. We don't cuss.
- 15:53And then once we get to campus, we're a completely different
- 15:55person now here for us, we're not very fraudulent.
- 15:57Like we, we're, we're we're such a small team here at USC, but
- 16:02you can't be fake. You know this.
- 16:03I mean, this morning after practice, the the group was
- 16:05doing the wobble dance with Coach Watkins.
- 16:08He's going to wedding. He's prepared for it.
- 16:09So like we are very authentic with who we are and we're not,
- 16:12we're not fake here. We're very intentional about our
- 16:15coaching. Like my job here is to coach the
- 16:18recruit and that's really about it.
- 16:20I mean, I have a little, I have to help out with the admission
- 16:22process, but other than that, I am locked and I don't miss any
- 16:26reps And when I, when I go recruiting, you know, that's the
- 16:29one time I missed something. That's when I'm on the road
- 16:31going recruiting. But I tell you these things like
- 16:33we don't, we want high school kids, we want the kids are going
- 16:35to be good to develop in four years.
- 16:38The portal's not, it's not the greatest thing because now
- 16:40there's NIL now. And so again, now you're
- 16:42getting, we're getting faced with, you know, how much can you
- 16:45give me outside in my, in my pocket?
- 16:47But luckily, and, and a good way and a bad way, we have a new
- 16:50standard for that when it comes to NIL go where every kid has to
- 16:53submit their NIL opportunities to this system, to this
- 16:56accounting agency. And they will determine based on
- 16:59their their followers, the amount of money they're being
- 17:03given, if they're going to be worth that.
- 17:04And so, you know, we have to navigate that.
- 17:07And so in some ways, we want to save that money for the kids
- 17:09that are doing well for our team and not having to give it to a
- 17:12kid that's coming out of high school.
- 17:14That's OK. You know, we want to be able to
- 17:17reward the ones that are doing well.
- 17:18And, and I will say this is a program here at USC that if you
- 17:22come here and do well, if you're going to be rewarded in more
- 17:23ways than not financially, but also opportunity with
- 17:28professional and stuff like that.
- 17:29So it is changing, you know, but we I would not, I would tell
- 17:33people, and I'm honest, like high school, high school
- 17:36recruits are still heavily favored over some transfers
- 17:39because with transfer kids, they go in the portal, you know,
- 17:41there's going to be an issue. Typically, you know, why, why
- 17:43you live in your last institution or who's pulling the
- 17:46strings really behind it. And so sometimes coaches don't
- 17:49want to go down that path when they can't really get to know
- 17:51the true kid before they get to campus in the in the portal
- 17:53section, the portal portal opportunity.
- 17:56They rather go high school. I know for our women's Sprint
- 17:58coach, he wants a sprinkler portal, but he wants more
- 18:01foundational like sprinters. 4 years, we can here get you here
- 18:04develop you and get you on to the next level.
