Transcript
- 0:16Some people don't struggle with believing in God.
- 0:19They struggle with trusting Him. They pray, they worship, they
- 0:23show up, they even serve. But underneath all of that,
- 0:27they're anxious. They're waiting for the other
- 0:29shoe to drop. They're bracing for
- 0:31disappointment, performing for approval, even negotiating for
- 0:36blessings. And and what they don't realize
- 0:38is this they are relating to God through the lens of their
- 0:43attachment wounds. Welcome to Rise and Thrive by
- 0:45Doctor J Nicole and I am Doctor J Nicole, therapist, educator,
- 0:50and someone deeply committed to helping you understand how your
- 0:53psychology and your faith intersect.
- 0:56And today we're talking about secure attachment with God and
- 1:00specifically how father wounds and early attachment experiences
- 1:03shape the way that we experience faith.
- 1:06This is not a surface conversation.
- 1:08This is about how you relate to authority, how you process
- 1:12silence, how you interpret delay, how you experience
- 1:16discipline, and how you experience love.
- 1:19Some people don't experience God is safe.
- 1:22They experience him as distant, unpredictable, hard to please,
- 1:27even emotionally unavailable. And for some, He's only
- 1:31responsive when they perform well.
- 1:33So let's talk about it. Attachment theory tells us that
- 1:37our earliest relationships shape how we bond.
- 1:40So if your caregivers were consistent, emotionally
- 1:43responsive, protective, and predictable, then you would
- 1:47develop a more secure attachment.
- 1:49But if caregivers are inconsistent, emotionally
- 1:52unavailable, critical, absent, unpredictable, then you would
- 1:57develop an anxious or avoiding attachment pattern.
- 2:00And sometimes they disorganize attachments, which is a which is
- 2:06a mix of anxious and avoiding, which is a mix of anxious and
- 2:12avoiding attachment styles. Now here's the key.
- 2:16Your brain does not compartmentalize attachment, it
- 2:20generates it, and it's something that happens before you have
- 2:22language for the template you learn for safety.
- 2:25This becomes the template that you apply to your daily life and
- 2:29authority. And so for many believers, God
- 2:32is framed as Father. And if your father was present
- 2:35and predictable, you may experience God is safe.
- 2:38But if your father was absent, harsh, emotionally distant,
- 2:42unpredictable, or even conditional in his love, you may
- 2:46struggle to experience God as secure and you might not be
- 2:51consciously aware of it, but your nervous system knows.
- 2:54So let's get a little bit more into anxious attachment.
- 2:58Anxious attachment in relationships looks like fear of
- 3:01abandonment, overthinking, seeking reassurance, hyper focus
- 3:06on connection, and anxious attachment.
- 3:09And faith can look like over praying from fear, constantly
- 3:14asking God for signs, interpreting silence as
- 3:18rejection, feeling spiritually insecure or disconnected,
- 3:23performing to earn favor. And we know that's not possible
- 3:27because there's nothing that we can do that would pay back what
- 3:33God has done for us. And so you might even think, did
- 3:36I do something wrong? Is God mad at me?
- 3:38Why hasn't he answered? Maybe I'm not faithful enough.
- 3:42And then you live in a state of spiritual hyper vigilance.
- 3:47You might try to be perfect, you try to avoid making mistakes.
- 3:50But underneath it, it's really fear.
- 3:52It's not love and fear based faith.
- 3:57It's exhausting. And is it really faith at all?
- 4:00And God can become someone that you manage instead of someone
- 4:04you resting. All right, beautiful people.

- 4:59Thank you for rising with us. Now back to your regularly
- 5:02scheduled programming. And now let's talk avoiding
- 5:05avoidant attachment. Avoiding attachment in
- 5:09relationships. This looks like emotional
- 5:12distance, self-reliance. So that's the hyper
- 5:15independence, discomfort with vulnerability, minimizing your
- 5:20needs, and avoiding attachment in faith.
- 5:23It looks like believing in God, but not emotionally connecting.
- 5:26You're avoiding praying during the hard times.
- 5:28Are you trying to figure it out on your own?
- 5:31It's feeling uncomfortable with surrender.
- 5:34Again, trying to do it all on your own.
- 5:36And so you might be keeping God at arm's length.
- 5:40I'll handle it myself. I can do it.
- 5:42I hear that all the time with people.
- 5:44I can do it. It's not about what you can do,
- 5:47but you might say that you trust God, but when things get
- 5:51difficult, you isolate. You don't bring your tears to
- 5:56Him, You don't bring your fears to Him.
- 5:58You don't bring your needs to Him.
- 6:01And that's because in your lived experience, dependency has not
- 6:06felt safe. And if we're being clear, a
- 6:09healthy amount of dependency is a core of secure attachment.
- 6:13A person has to be dependable and trustworthy.
- 6:17Now let's really get into it. Father wounds do not only affect
- 6:21romantic relationships. We hear this a lot and talk
- 6:24about relationships. Oh, they got daddy wounds right.
- 6:27But this also shaped, this shapes your theology.
- 6:31If your father was absent, you may struggle with God's divine
- 6:36presence. If your father was critical, you
- 6:39may expect to be disappointed by God.
- 6:43If your father was inconsistent, you might struggle with trusting
- 6:47God's timing, that divine timing.
- 6:50And if your father was emotionally unavailable, well,
- 6:55you may struggle with believing that God is tender, that he
- 6:58hears you. And sometimes people don't
- 7:02struggle with Scripture. They actually struggle with
- 7:05projection. They project their early
- 7:07experiences onto God and have a difficult time separating their
- 7:12earthly experiences with the Father, with their spiritual
- 7:18experience with God the Father. And they might wonder why faith
- 7:22feels complicated. Well, that's why because there
- 7:25are some unpacking that needs to happen in the physical.
- 7:29You might know versus you can quote scripture.
- 7:32You might even serve in ministry, but if your nervous
- 7:36system associates Father with unpredictability, your body
- 7:41might brace even when your mouth says I trust you.
- 7:46There is not a that is not spiritual failure.
- 7:50This is attachment wiring and your wiring can be healed.
- 7:58So secure attachment with God. This looks like stressing His
- 8:03presence even in silence. Bringing your full emotional
- 8:07self to Him, not performing for approval.
- 8:10It's OK with receiving correction without feeling like
- 8:15you're worthless. It looks like experiencing
- 8:18discipline without being shamed or feeling ashamed or
- 8:21embarrassed. It's resting instead of striving
- 8:25and trying to earn. And with secure attachment, this
- 8:31is secure attachment says, even when I don't understand, I'm not
- 8:36abandoned, even when I fail, I'm not rejected.
- 8:40Even when I wait, I am not forgotten.
- 8:44So it means God is present, you're accepted and you are
- 8:49cared for. Now, secure attachment does not
- 8:52eliminate some of these questions, but it can give your
- 8:57nervous system a break and it alleviates some of that fear of
- 9:02disconnection or abandonment. And that is powerful.
- 9:07And the way that that can show up in your body in such a
- 9:09healthy way and even just change the way that you walk through
- 9:13life and it will undoubtedly shrinkle over to the rest of
- 9:18your relationships. Now that we've talked about it,
- 9:22let's get practical. Before we continue today's
- 9:25conversation, I want to share something that has become part
- 9:27of my personal self-care routine.
- 9:29I've partnered with Canvas Beauty, a black woman owned
- 9:32beauty brand built around confidence, community and

- 9:48Beauty for yourself, you can use my affiliate link in the show
- 9:51notes and use my Code Genie 3 for a discount at checkout.
- 9:56Now let's get back to you. Today's episode because I don't
- 10:00want this to be abstract for anyone, and I want you to leave
- 10:05with some tangible things. OK, so first, I want you to
- 10:08notice your internal narrative about God when something goes
- 10:12wrong. What is your first thought?
- 10:15Is it God is punishing me or God is present with me?
- 10:20That thought will reveal your current attachment style. 2 I
- 10:26want you to really be intentional about separating
- 10:30earthly fathers from your Heavenly Father.
- 10:32And this takes a lot of intentional reflection and I've
- 10:36worked with many clients on it. And it is possible you may need
- 10:41to grieve what you did not receive from your earthly father
- 10:46as a starting point. If you don't know where to
- 10:48start, you have to be willing to acknowledge hurt.
- 10:50Some of us may even need therapy to process this, to heal and to
- 10:55be able to work through it and be supported and do it in a safe
- 10:59environment. Prayer is also going to be
- 11:03essential during this time. So it's unlearning to relearn.
- 11:08You're disconnecting from that hurt with your earthly father
- 11:11and connecting to safety with the Heavenly Father.
- 11:16You may also need some honest conversations.
- 11:19If you have access to your Heavenly Father, this might be a
- 11:24time to have that conversation with him as the things you need
- 11:27to ask or express what you need to express.
- 11:32Now, I'm not saying that it's going to be easy, but this is
- 11:36also where prayer and therapy really come in and you can have
- 11:39support and preparing for that. I know I spend time with clients
- 11:43where we can role play from the parent and you're you right?
- 11:49What do you need to say? Or even helping them package up
- 11:54what they need to say in a way that's concise, that honors
- 11:58their emotion and awful also brings logic into the
- 12:02conversation so that it's not just an attack on the person to
- 12:06say, well, you weren't there for me, You didn't do this and all
- 12:08the things that they did wrong. And when really that's a dump.
- 12:12It's nothing wrong with it, but you're still not going to get
- 12:14what you want just from the dump.
- 12:17Healing requires truth, so this could mean having those
- 12:21difficult conversations and sometimes you might surprise
- 12:24you. What you learn or uncover and be
- 12:27willing to listen without judgement and approach it with
- 12:31curiosity. Ask your questions now #3
- 12:35practice vulnerability and prayer, not performance, not
- 12:40putting forth your best polished words.
- 12:43It's not rehearsed spirituality. It's authenticity, the best
- 12:48relationship that you can have with God.
- 12:51It starts with real emotion, your real feelings.
- 12:54If you're angry, be angry. Tell God I'm angry and talk to
- 13:00Him about why. If you're confused, work through
- 13:05that. Label it.
- 13:07If you're disappointed, if you feel hopeful, talk about that.
- 13:11So secure attachment grows through emotional honesty, and
- 13:16practicing this honesty with God makes it easier for you to have
- 13:20difficult conversations with people in your life that you
- 13:23already love. A space where it's safe.
- 13:26A space where you're going to be heard for sometimes just sitting
- 13:31in silence without interpreting things and definitely not
- 13:34interpreting them as rejection. Silence is not absence.
- 13:39It's not punishment. Silence can actually be grow.
- 13:43You heard me correctly. If you can sit in the stillness
- 13:47without spiraling, your nervous system begins to trust the
- 13:51stability. Silence is a break from chaos.
- 13:55Silence really and truly is healing #5 anchor yourself and
- 14:00consistent truth, not your fluctuating emotions because
- 14:06feelings fade and they fluctuate, but truth is an
- 14:11anchor and secure attachment strengthens when you repeatedly
- 14:15remind yourself of who God is and not who your past taught
- 14:20you. Fathers are OK, but some of you
- 14:23love God deeply, but you're still afraid of him leaving.
- 14:28And that fear is not about God, it's about attachment.
- 14:34And you're not weak for needing reassurance, you're not
- 14:38faithless for feeling anxious, and you are not broken for
- 14:42struggling with trust. This is a result of your lived
- 14:46experiences, and you are healing and secure.
- 14:50Attachment with God will transform not only your faith,
- 14:54but your friendships and your romantic relationships.
- 14:59It'll transform your leadership. And it's absolutely going to
- 15:03help transform yourself worth. Because when you're securely
- 15:07attached spiritually, you stop chasing love horizontally out
- 15:12here in the world, and you stop begging for validation.
- 15:17You stop tolerating emotional scraps.
- 15:20You stop performing for approval, you can rest.
- 15:25And as we move towards the one year anniversary of Rise and
- 15:28Thrive, this is the kind of growth that we're stepping into.
- 15:32Not surface spirituality or psychological jargon, but
- 15:38integration. So here's your reflection.
- 15:41Do you experience God is safe or do you experience him as
- 15:45unpredictable? And I want you to sit with that.
- 15:47OK, then leave a comment down below.
- 15:51I want you to sit with that. And once you've sat with that
- 15:55and you've been able to give voice to it, let me know in the
- 15:58comments. And before we go, if today's
- 16:01conversation resonated with you, I want to invite you to stay
