- You step back into the office and realize you don’t recognize the person staring back at you in the mirror, let alone the one in the inbox. That moment of disorientation is not a failure; it is the cost of being human in a system that demands you stay static while life happens. Let’s get real for a second about what actually happens when you return after a long leave. It isn’t just about catching up on emails or remembering where the coffee machine is. It’s a profound psychological whiplash. You left a world that was spinning at a certain speed, with certain priorities, certain people, and certain rhythms. And then, whether it was three months or three years, time passed. Life happened. And when you come back, the world hasn’t paused to wait for you. It has accelerated. The projects you once led are now owned by someone else. The jargon has shifted. The org chart has mutated. And you are standing there, holding your old identity like a map that no longer matches the terrain. I want you to feel that ache I’m describing because I know it intimately. It’s not just professional; it’s deeply personal. You might have taken that leave for health, for family, for burnout, or simply because you needed to breathe. But the return feels less like a homecoming and more like an invasion. You’re trying to re-enter a stream that has already moved downstream, and you’re struggling to find your footing without getting swept away. This is the complexity we aren’t usually taught to prepare for. We talk about returning from maternity leave, or sabbaticals, or even extended medical breaks, but we rarely talk about the emotional labor of reintegrating into a culture that has forgotten you existed, while you’ve been busy living your actual life. One of the hardest parts of this transition is letting go of the ghost of who you were before you left. You carry this internal image of yourself as the efficient, capable, always-on version of your professional self. But that woman doesn’t exist anymore. Not because you’ve lost your skills—though you might feel rusty—but because your context has changed. Your priorities have likely shifted. Your tolerance for nonsense might be lower. Or higher. Maybe you’re softer around the edges because you’ve learned what truly matters. Or maybe you’re harder, sharper, because you’ve survived something that stripped away the trivialities. What’s the cost of that silence? When you try to slip back into the old role, trying to mimic the person you were six months ago, you fail. And then you judge yourself for failing. You think, 'I should know this.' 'I should be faster.' 'I should fit in here.' But you can’t fit into a mold that was cast for a different season of your life. The strategy here is not to pretend you haven’t changed. The strategy is to acknowledge the change as data, not defect. You are not behind. You are elsewhere. There is a difference. Being elsewhere means you bring perspective that the people who never left cannot see. You have seen the world outside the bubble. You have felt the weight of real life. That is not a liability; it is a lens. But you have to stop apologizing for looking through it differently than everyone else. So how do you navigate the first few weeks back without burning out or blending into the background? You start by controlling the narrative, not by hiding the gap, but by framing it. Too many women I coach apologize for their absence. They over-explain. They say, 'Sorry I’m slow,' or 'I’m still catching up,' as if taking time off is a crime against the company. It’s not. It’s a fact of your existence. When you apologize for existing, you signal that you are a guest in your own career. You need to walk back in as a resident. Try this instead: Own the return with quiet confidence. Say, 'I’ve had some time away to focus on [personal reason/health/family], and I’m excited to dive back in. Here is how I’m approaching my first week.' Notice the lack of apology. Notice the forward momentum. You don’t have to disclose intimate details. You don’t owe anyone a medical history or a parenting timeline. You owe them your competence and your clarity. By framing your return as a deliberate choice rather than a forced re-entry, you shift the power dynamic. You are not begging for acceptance; you are offering your renewed presence. This changes how people treat you. It changes how you treat yourself. You stop scanning for judgment and start scanning for opportunity. Now, let’s talk about the practical headache: information asymmetry. While you were gone, decisions were made in rooms you weren’t in. Conversations happened in Slack threads you missed. Relationships solidified among colleagues who stayed. You are walking into a web of inside jokes, shared histories, and unspoken alliances. This is terrifying for any leader, but especially for someone returning from a long break. You feel exposed. You feel like you’re missing pieces of the puzzle. The trap here is assuming that if you just work harder, you’ll catch up. You won’t. You can’t brute-force social capital. Instead, you have to leverage curiosity. Use your return as an excuse to ask questions that others might be too proud to ask. 'I missed the decision on Project X; help me understand where we landed.' 'Who else should I be talking to about Y?' Frame these questions as a desire to align, not a sign of ignorance. People love to teach. They love to feel like insiders. By inviting them to share context, you build bridges. You turn potential adversaries into allies. You show that you value their expertise. And honestly? Most people are flattered that you’re asking. They’ve been waiting for someone to validate their hard work since you left. So lean into that. Be humble, be curious, and let them fill in the blanks. This brings me to a point I touched on briefly in our last conversation about isolation, though today we’re flipping the script. Usually, we worry that vulnerability makes us look weak. But in the context of a return, strategic vulnerability is your strongest asset. Admitting that things are different is brave. Admitting that you need a refresher on the new software is smart. Admitting that you feel a bit out of sync is human. When you model this behavior, you give permission for everyone else to be honest too. You create a culture of psychological safety, which is exactly what high-performing teams need. But there’s a nuance here. Strategic vulnerability is not oversharing. It’s not crying in the bathroom or venting about how unfair life is. It’s sharing enough of your reality to connect, without dumping your burden on your colleagues. It’s saying, 'I’m navigating a lot right now, so please bear with me if I seem distracted.' It’s setting boundaries with transparency. This approach protects you. It manages expectations. And it builds trust. Because when people know where you stand, they can support you. They can advocate for you. They can’t do that if you’re hiding behind a mask of perfection. Perfection is lonely. Authenticity is magnetic. Choose authenticity every single time. Finally, you must redefine what success looks like in this new chapter. Before your leave, your metrics might have been titles, salaries, hours logged, or deals closed. Now, those metrics might feel hollow. Or irrelevant. You’ve lived through something that reminded you that you are not your job title. You are a person. A daughter, a partner, a friend, a survivor, a creator. You have dimensions that the corporate world ignores. Returning doesn’t mean shrinking yourself back down to fit the box. It means expanding the box to include all of you. This is sustainable success. It’s not about working until you drop. It’s about working with intention. It’s about protecting your energy because you finally know its value. You don’t have to do it all at once. You don’t have to prove you’re still the same tireless engine you were five years ago. Prove that you’re smarter now. Prove that you’re kinder. Prove that you’re more effective because you’re rested, focused, and clear on your values. Let your performance speak for itself, but let your peace of mind speak louder. That is the legacy you want to build. Not just a career, but a life that fits. And that starts with how you hold yourself in this return. Thank you for showing up for yourself today. Take a breath. You belong here. I’ll see you next time. Love, Deborah.
