Transcript
- 0:00Four Finger Discount. Yes, welcome to four Finger Discount. It is the
- 0:20season eighteen finale of the show. I'm very excited to get into this.
- 0:23We're going to be talking about our top five episodes, but for now,
- 0:27I'm Dan and I am guy. Yes, it's top five times. We
- 0:30have wrapped up the entire season. Eight full seasons you've done? No,
- 0:34you started, Yes, So eight full seasons you've done on the show.
- 0:36Now that's correct. You've reviewed eight seasons of The Simpsons. Can you believe
- 0:40it? I cannot believe it. I can, I can like yeah,
- 0:46And look, I think we were pleasantly surprised a lot of the time.
- 0:50I've got here in my note, Season eighteen a mixed bag that had some
- 0:53absolute stinkers, some really disappointing episodes, but also a lot of my favorite
- 0:59post Golden era episodes were in this season as well, and there was some
- 1:03that I completely forgotten about and maybe never even seen. It really tweeted by
- 1:06surprise, and I really enjoyed as well. So we're gonna get into our
- 1:07top five. But there were certainly signs of burnout in this season, I
- 1:11thought, with many episodes similarly running out of steam by the end of the
- 1:15episode, as well as just dragging ones out with filler. Yes, episodes
- 1:19that felt cobbled together out of bits and pieces that are lying around the writer's
- 1:22room. Certainly say the line guy, A bunch of stuff happening, A
- 1:26bunch of stuff, Just a bunch of stuff. When'd you say say?
- 1:33The line Guy's like, no, I've got maybe five go to that would
- 1:37be your go to set lines. Uh, take something existing and put a
- 1:41clock in it. Yeah, the future is now old man, future is
- 1:42now old man. Something to do with sawny yep, the one we just
- 1:49said. And I don't know, I think Zach sit na say, But
- 1:53I mean, I'm figure about what happened the other day. I love to
- 2:02use the phrase two grade taste that tastes great together. And I can't use
- 2:06that anymore because I can brockman myself. Yes, of course. But anyway,
- 2:10So what we're gonna do today is gonna run through our top ten episodes.
- 2:14So you're gonna pick your five. I'm gonna pick my five. But
- 2:15before we do that, you're gonna try and guess my five, and I'm
- 2:19gonna try and guess your five. So you say what you think my five
- 2:22are going to be I won't look at you. I'll look at my screen
- 2:24and then I will say the same to you. I don't want you to
- 2:27I want to try and give it away. So are you going to turn
- 2:30your headphones off them or listen? I'll just I'll just be straight faced.
- 2:34I won't I do want to give anything. Oh you're gonna pokeer face me?
- 2:37Yes? Yeah, that came out all wrong. My list of Dando's
- 2:43top five number one, the Boys of Bummer No especially on my list.
- 2:47Oh no, Okay, Dando's Top five The Whole whod Couple, Springfield up
- 2:55twenty four minutes, Local chords, Entree of Horror, Tres Horror is our
- 3:01do we not count? That's one of those it's like a default when we
- 3:04put to the side because it's it's not that it's non cannon, because there's
- 3:07other non cannon ones in here, but it's just it's its own thing.
- 3:09Okay, let's put put in Boys Obama. Then I might take one out
- 3:14of Mite. Well, I've put a bit of crossover because I had to
- 3:17think that you and me have similar tastes, although history has often proven that
- 3:22wrong. Hmm, let's say the mook, the chef, the wife and
- 3:28her Homer. Okay, now I think your top five that one easy just
- 3:31said the moot, the chef, and the wife and a Homer. I
- 3:34thought, with your love of jazz, you throw in Jazzy and the pussy
- 3:37Cats. You can't always say what you want. I enjoying that one.
- 3:42I also thought you'd like Yocal Cords, and I was tossing it. I
- 3:46couldn't quite pick one more, and I've thrown in Homer. RAZI all right,
- 3:52so hit me with your number five again. I have failed to put
- 3:57numbers on these, so okay, but oh start from the top, and
- 4:01in my top five is Moe and a Lisa. You've got. I was
- 4:05thinking about that because I know you liked mo. But I went back and
- 4:09looked at my notes and I remember there we weren't completely sold on the story
- 4:13by the end, so I thought that might have sort of taken it out
- 4:15of your top five. But yeah, what was it that got Mow and
- 4:17a Lisa over the line? For you? Two words? Shabo friend zone
- 4:26as a lip bro. Yes, I've tended to do that in the but
- 4:28no, I think because I am a I am the radio, because I'm
- 4:33a writer and a bookworm. I tend to like anything that had sort of
- 4:35a literary bent. I like the way that it's skewered the pretensions of that
- 4:42whole I don't know, circle or community or whatever. And I liked I
- 4:47like the relationship between Lisa and Mo. I like it when you take elements
- 4:50that don't necessarily belong together and try to create something new, try to add
- 4:59a dash of new flavor. And I thought it worked pretty well, honestly,
- 5:00So yeah, that's I think that's the main reason that I was happy
- 5:04with it. I was being facetious when I said the whole shade bone friends,
- 5:08but I do find that extremely funny. What else did I enjoy that?
- 5:12I mean, yeah, any any of my episode is pretty good.
- 5:15I mean I liked his poetry, and I liked how I don't think mods
- 5:18especially an especially deep character or anything like that. I don't think they've written
- 5:23him all that deeply, but I do like the ways that they explore his
- 5:28self loathing and I don't know general malecontent attitude. I think the older we
- 5:35get in with today's society and just sort of the idea of social media and
- 5:41how can really plan your mental health. I think mental health being a much
- 5:43hot more of a hot topic these days, we can relate to my a
- 5:46lot more because it seems like he is going through a lot of the mental
- 5:49health issues. Had a lot of us tend to go through it from time
- 5:53to time, I would say so, absolutely least to sort of when I
- 5:55was a kid, I just laughed at how angry and silly he was.
- 5:57You just seem like an old grump, but yoder you get, you become
- 6:00an old grump. And he realized, you know what, most he's on
- 6:02point. Sometimes, Oh yeah, he certainly has his moments where he's not
- 6:05on point, but you know, okay, So my number five, I've
- 6:10gone with ice cream of Margie with the light blue hair. I was wondering
- 6:13about this one. It was it had a little asterix on. It was
- 6:15like, this could be one that dand likes, but why do you like
- 6:18it? Well, it's just it's always been one of those episodes where I
- 6:21can buy I like when home is good at something that's right and I'm a
- 6:25big thing of that, and when you can actually believe that he would be
- 6:28successful at this, and it's one of those jobs I've always ponder about going
- 6:31how they left it. How had he not been the ice cream man up
- 6:34to this point season eighteen. It's one of those stories, but I know
- 6:38I tend to get annoyed when they don't explain that he's not working at the
- 6:42power plant, But this one actually gave an explanation at the start. Yes,
- 6:45and yeah, it's not all that far fettered Homer would be successful as
- 6:46an ice cream man. The only reason I put it at number five was
- 6:50that it had to cram in the Homer and Muge relationship in peril story at
- 6:55the end, which didn't need to really be there. Yeah, I think
- 6:57that would be the reason why I left it off. I think it's something
- 7:00that we've talked about a fair bit in that in the best episodes of The
- 7:04Simpsons, or in the best seasons of The Simpsons, you've seen that Homer
- 7:09and Marge's relationship they can get frustrated with one another, particularly Marge getting frustrated
- 7:14with Homer. But in these later seasons it's kind of reached a sage where
- 7:16it's like, why are you with him? Yeah? I mean, but
- 7:19the thing is, in this episode, I don't think it was justified her
- 7:23anger because I think she wanted him to get home in time for her show
- 7:26or something. He was driving her really really fast, and he crashed into
- 7:29all the sculptures in the popsicle sticks. He was genuinely trying. It was
- 7:33an accident. It wasn't him going I'm not going to get their own time.
- 7:36He was trying to be there for much and made a mistake and she
- 7:40got really really angry. And I thought, of all the things, I'm
- 7:42on homer side here, So I think that's why I pushed it to the
- 7:45five, but just the overall story of Homer being the ice cream man.
- 7:47Then Marge turned that into an occupation for herself building the popsicle stands. I
- 7:51thought it was a really fun, fun episode, and it had the very
- 7:55early two thousands nostylesia kick of the Ali G Show, Oh hit my ride
- 7:59and all and get your freak on playing and things like that. Yeah,
- 8:03now I think we're probably gonna share this next one. I mean, I
- 8:07said it's one of yours, but I certainly liked it very much. And
- 8:09that's the local course. I've got number three. Okay, what did you
- 8:13enjoy I've got here? You know those episodes where you're expecting absolutely not shit.
- 8:18But you're going too going, oh, it's going to be a Clearest
- 8:20episode. I'm not going to look forward to this right, And it just
- 8:22blew me away. I just remember thinking, how have I never How have
- 8:28I got no recollection of this episode? I don't think I remember seeing it?
- 8:31But how is no one talking about this? Because I thought this was
- 8:33so great. I love that they didn't focus on the shick aspect of it.
- 8:37It wasn't Clearius as a Hill, but Clearus was like the speaking of
- 8:39Quite on set. This actually sort of hits a little bit harder now,
- 8:43just sort of the I guess in Quite on set the parents were not happy
- 8:48most of the time with what was going on here, but clear this is
- 8:50just that manager taking advantage of his kids, pushed him into the spotlight,
- 8:52everyone making money off them, and they it's like, we're not really happy
- 8:54with this, but we're going to do it anyway. Yes, we should
- 8:56clarify unless than actually recorded all this and it's the episode because we spoke Quite
- 9:03on set recently on a podcast. Yes, and we also spoke for a
- 9:05fair bit of it before we hit record off today's podcast, at which point
- 9:09I said I was hashtag Team Snyder and I said, no such thing.
- 9:16Ah, yeah, but we we have been talking about that a bit,
- 9:20and yeah, it does certainly relate to this. I'm glad that what clears
- 9:24wasn't sidelined. He was not front and center for this. Yeah, and
- 9:28he was included. He wasn't. This is what happened. This is what
- 9:31happened. If Clet has got money, he would blow it all. Yeah.
- 9:35And I like that they brought Brandan back at the end because it was
- 9:39a sign of a good episode where I hadn't actually thought throughout it. Where's
- 9:43Brandean in all of this? And she was over in the in the army.
- 9:45I believe she was deployed and she snaps clear us out of it.
- 9:48But also we get the b plot of Dark Stanley, which was so great.
- 9:52I really loved that Bart going to therapy but just making up the idea
- 9:54of a legend, a school legend that the bloody Mary Candy Man, that
- 9:58kind of thing and being scared by he gets sent to therapy and we get
- 10:01Meg Ryan as doctor Swanson. That's I think one of the reasons why it
- 10:05was included in my top five, because he has Team Ryan for life as
- 10:09a as an eighties and nineties boy, yeah mc well eighties boy, nineties
- 10:13man, she made you a man, she certainly did. Yeah, no,
- 10:20yeah, that whole therapy b plot was really really entertaining. I thought
- 10:24Meg Ryan did a wonderful job. I mean, as we've said in the
- 10:28past, you know, you get certain actors on and you're very aware it's
- 10:31like it's so and so guest where occasionally get some actors on it's like,
- 10:35I'm treating this like a performance. I'm treating this like a character and play
- 10:39it that way. And that was the case with Meg Ryan. I think
- 10:41was not until the end credits, or at least until the final scene that
- 10:46she was in, was like, who is this? They're doing a really
- 10:48good job or I'm really enjoying their work, Meg Ryan, Meg Ryan.
- 10:50I love when you don't know who it is, like you're saying when yeah,
- 10:54that's a sign of a good a good role. When they're not trying
- 10:56to when it's their voice but it's a slight twang their voice and they're creating
- 11:01this character. Yeah, when did this happen? Recently? It might not
- 11:03have been on The Simpsons, but it might have been on a King of
- 11:05the Hill. Or something. There was Jim Cummings with Pops. Was that
- 11:11man got a Thousand Boys? I think it was the Clay what's his name,
- 11:16Klay Greeneberg or whatever. It was Green Day of course as a band.
- 11:18Yeah, and it wasn't even Billy Joe Armstrong as it was very cool.
- 11:24Yeah, they're very good stuff. I remember going to the end of
- 11:26that go oh great day. Yeah. So God's was both in our yeah,
- 11:33my number three, but we got the fun twist at the end of
- 11:33that one as well where she ends up going to therapy because she was replacing
- 11:37her son who was killed by Dark Stanley with Bart Yeah, I mean a
- 11:41great what was the music from too as well? It was that dude,
- 11:46Dude, it was taken from something or sampled. Oh, I don't know.
- 11:50I don't think it was that, but the way you just did it
- 11:52because oh talk about unified theory. Yeah. I was on Twitter just earlier
- 11:58and there an account that I'm enjoying following called music Brownlow okay, where they
- 12:05look at the Australian music charts of each particular year and like, okay,
- 12:07give us three two ones on these, and they did nineteen ninety nine.
- 12:11I was sort of looking through the list game, well what was that?
- 12:13So it was just Australian songs or the ARIA charts. It was the ARIA
- 12:16chart, so you had local and international artists. But one song that was
- 12:20in there, I'd completely forgotten about it. I hated it then and now
- 12:24I hated it even more now because it's stuck in my head again. It's
- 12:26a song called two Times. Didn't you know? It's by a woman named
- 12:31Ann Lee. It's sort of a it's a club song but it's but and
- 12:33I had that in the brown Low Yeah. Yeah, Well, I mean
- 12:37the list is all the songs and it's like you pick out your three two
- 12:39ones, but it's got this Do Do Do? Two times? Yeah?
- 12:46That song? Yeah? I fuck it. I hate it. I fucking
- 12:50hate it. And you just did this. No. I hadn't thought about
- 12:56this in two decades and then I heard it again this morning and now Dando's
- 13:00doing it. What's going on? I'm just trying to find here on the
- 13:03on the on the wiki page about what the music the music was. Let's
- 13:07let's look here. That played during Darkstown the music from twelve Monkeys, Yeah,
- 13:11twelve Monkeys, knew Yeah, and it was from something. Yeah,
- 13:15it's not two times. So my number four So that was your number four,
- 13:20right? Yes? Yeah, okay my number four. I have gone
- 13:24with either meet the chef, the wife and her homer. Oh you really
- 13:28did, Yes, yes you got that one right. Yes, I've got
- 13:31your courts right as well. Yes, your cold courts for me. You're
- 13:33on fire so far. I thought this was a really fun guest star heavy
- 13:37episode, but it wasn't the guest stars as themselves. It was then playing
- 13:43Godfather esque characters and Sopranos as characters because they had the essentially the cast of
- 13:46the Sopranos on there, except for the main men himself of course. No,
- 13:50no, mister Gandeltheni nationally. But you do have Michael Imperiali and Joe
- 13:54and Joey. Yeah yeah, John Montoni was never in the Sopranos. Did
- 13:58not play like a guest part. Don't believe so soon. No, I
- 14:01can double check that right now, Joe Montanna Sopranos, have a look,
- 14:05Yeah, Sopranos. You feel like it would have been a fun sort of
- 14:07like, okay, you come on our show and then Joe will going on
- 14:09your show. Wouldn't It wasn't the Sopranos. Joe Montagna was in The Sopranos.
- 14:13I was watching The Sopranos for the seventh time, and in a Mercedes
- 14:18commercial featuring featured in season three episode, I thought I heard a familiar voice.
- 14:20Yes, it was David Rossi himself. I googled it to verify.
- 14:22The first result was a clip of them that he played David Rossi in Criminal
- 14:26Minds. Oh so he Oh sorry, I thought David ross must have been
- 14:31another actor. I didn't realize if I've never watched Criminal Minds. So David
- 14:33Rossi. So Joe Montani was the voice of the guy in that commercial.
- 14:37Oh, okay, okay. I really loved the way they work the Sopranos
- 14:39story into this. It was because The Sopranos was one of the biggest shows,
- 14:43even not the biggest show on TV at the time when yeah, right,
- 14:46and know it was coming close to the finale. I just think having
- 14:48the one was a huge get and the way they used them. You discussed
- 14:52earlier how sometimes I get guest stars on it like, hey, look,
- 14:54it's Prime Minister Tony Blair. They have to actually tell you who it is,
- 14:58and they just make this really obnoxious cameover. It just sort of saying
- 15:01one line and they're going to have no bearing on the story. It's just,
- 15:03hey, this person's on the show, so we can use them in
- 15:05the trailer for the episode on the commercial Society people to watch. But I
- 15:09thought this one here really felt organic and they felt like they belonged in the
- 15:11Simpsons universe. It was a great combination of yea paying tribute to not just
- 15:18the Sopranos, but yeah, basically the whole mob scene gangster movie genre,
- 15:22right down to the closing scene, which is you know this beautiful mo'm arshaally
- 15:26Godfather, but also yeah, all the stuff about I'm sorry, is he
- 15:31what's the kid's named Mia, Michael, Yeah, wanting to sort of go
- 15:35his own way. Well, I mean that that whole thing is very much
- 15:37a Godfather tribute as well, because I mean, Michael Corleyoni doesn't necessarily want
- 15:41to be part of the family business until he had to join the family business
- 15:45and finds and he's a natural at it. But the whole thing about you
- 15:48know, I want to be a chef and all this kind of stuff,
- 15:50it's a good story about this isn't getting close to home at all about you
- 15:54know, you may be different from your old man. You want to walk
- 15:58a different path, or you just don't have it in YouTube walk the same
- 16:02paths as your old man did, all your parents did. Yeah, I
- 16:06added a whole new layder to Fat Tony's character. I thought it really did.
- 16:08Yeah, Yeah, a good episode. I liked a lot. I'm
- 16:11glad it was on both our lists. And Homer and Bart taking over seem
- 16:15to be obvious, unrealistic, but I also really enjoyed the scenes when they
- 16:18were running the show. Well, they're definitely father and son, aren't they
- 16:22in terms of if you let them indulge their worst instincts, they're going to
- 16:27do that. But they're actually kind of good at it as well. They're
- 16:30a good team when they're doing stuff that's not necessarily good for anybody else.
- 16:34Itmight of me of, you know, getting the grease or the the beer
- 16:37baron that, but was that the one where it goes which is the episode
- 16:44where they I know that was the grease one? Was like, we're in
- 16:45the racket business too. Speaking of our shot to our man Tom with Patoure,
- 16:53he recently had a scare on the field. Did you see that he
- 16:56collapsed so you got a really hard bum. Then about five minutes later he's
- 17:02just sort of in the middle of the field and just collapsed to the ground.
- 17:03Oh good, And one of the position players was like, are you
- 17:07okay, sort of helped him up again, and apparently he's done all these
- 17:10tests or two straight days of tests, no concussion issues at all, but
- 17:14he just collapsed. So have you doing well, Tom Liver? I hope
- 17:17you're doing all right, mate. He was our guest star on our revisit
- 17:19of the Grease episode talking about Grease. Yes, yes, if you haven't
- 17:25checked that episode, make sure you do so funny man. All right,
- 17:26I'm going to go you give me enough one of yours or you have to
- 17:29mix the chef as well, did you I did, indeed, So let's
- 17:32cut that one out instead. We'll go with twenty four minutes. Okay,
- 17:34I've got that as my number one. Yeah. This is just top five
- 17:38for me since Golden Ere. It's the best format bending episode we've had since
- 17:42Trilogy of Error with Linguo and all that kind of stuff that which is a
- 17:47play on is it run all the Run? Yeah? Yeah, yeah,
- 17:49yeah yeah. I am a huge fan of the format bending episodes. Not
- 17:53huge on the trilogy ones where it's like three short stories, they can be
- 17:57very hit and miss. I like the ones where it's an entire episode,
- 18:00sort of taking a new format. This again one of the biggest shows at
- 18:03the time, twenty four. I thought they just absolutely nailed the aspect of
- 18:07being a parody. It was just so spot on. Again, they hit
- 18:11just that sweet spot of like, this is very very faithful to twenty four,
- 18:15very faithful to it. It's look, it's feel, its tone,
- 18:19but it's still unmistakably Simpsons. Of course it's the Simpsons. But it can
- 18:23be occasionally difficult to Oh, you know, we really enjoy show a we
- 18:29want to pay tribute to it. And sorry to try out one of my
- 18:33overused catchphrase, but some great taste don't taste great together. This was a
- 18:37situation where it actually did. I mean you could tell that either they really
- 18:41really really done their research on twenty four or they were just huge fans of
- 18:45the show and wanted to do it just right and merge it into the into
- 18:49the Springfield and Fox will like crossover. Yes, please, Billionaire turn is
- 18:56up there, go. I like the idea, go ahead with that.
- 19:00Yeah, but it's just funny, well written, so on point, the
- 19:03transitions, the split screens, the countdown clock, everything, why the commercial
- 19:07breaks it all. It felt like a twenty four episode, because yeah,
- 19:10what twenty four episode you for the best of my recollection was often oh,
- 19:14I don't know if I can trust this. Oh, wait a minute,
- 19:15betrayal, all this kind of stuff and this said he'll turned by Martin Prince.
- 19:21But it was like it was a hill time, but there was a
- 19:22reason there was always a reason why. There was always a reason why.
- 19:23Yeah. I mean, if it's a character that you really like, it's
- 19:26either going to be oh, you've let me down the garden path all this
- 19:30time, or it's like they're going to have a reason. Oh they do
- 19:32have a reason. Oh, I'm invested in making sure this all works out.
- 19:33They're giving himself the wedge at the end, shame and having the you
- 19:40know, the bullies as the villains and yeah, all that kind of stuff.
- 19:42It just felt golden here. I thought it really did. Yeah,
- 19:45it was a spot on and plus having Jack and Chloe in the episode as
- 19:48well, but not as the main characters. That was then as a brief
- 19:52cameo. That's where a cameo worked. I think this might have been one
- 19:56of the episodes where they truly realized, you know what, eighteen seasons in,
- 20:00it's gonna be hard with original ideas. Maybe we can start doing more
- 20:02and more of these. And they're doing more and more of these in like
- 20:04season three, okay four, they did about six or seven of them,
- 20:07and most of them are really really good. All right. I think those
- 20:10episodes like this that made them realize, you know what, we can just
- 20:11sort of take a step back and not have to think of an original idea
- 20:15and just sort of have fun with this. Now we're at the point where
- 20:18we don't need to have a story set in Springfield. We've still have plenty
- 20:21of those, but occasionally throw one of these ones out there because they're fun.
- 20:25It reminded me, this one reminds me of twenty two short films about
- 20:27Springfield very much. So. Yeah, and like I said, it's great
- 20:30when you've got guest stars who come to play as well. Keep the subtle
- 20:33and is a fan or maybe just hanging around the Fox a lot, come
- 20:37on in and keep it. But because he's doubling up, he did g
- 20:41I Annoyd Grunt, which an episode I remember we did not like I believe,
- 20:44so when I was looking at the listom going, did we like this
- 20:48one as one where home is sort of the army invade Springfield and that's ridiculous?
- 20:52Yeah? It was a really absurd it it becomes civil war essentially.
- 20:56Yes, all right, Well, do you have any more that you haven't
- 20:59discussed? I've got one more? Was with my number two? Uh you
- 21:03did mention jazz and the Pusscats. Yes, that is I'm like, I
- 21:06knew you love a jazz You really enjoyed this one? I did, indeed.
- 21:07Great. Guess the cameo from White Stripes as well, that's right.
- 21:11Yeah, well this is the one with the need which you think the tribute
- 21:15to the video You think this is the episode that has the White Stripes in
- 21:18it, but they're only in it for about thirty seconds, and of course,
- 21:22you know Fox being Fox and the Simpsons being the Simpsons, tune in
- 21:25for the white stripe. That's what it was, really because they were hot
- 21:27shit at the time. Yeah, still out to some degree. Yes,
- 21:30what did you like the most about this one? Though? This is where
- 21:33Bart joins the jazz band and Lisa, I believe what was her side story
- 21:37here, well, because Bart turns out to be a bit of a natural
- 21:41jazz or embraced by the jazz community is what Lisa's wanted all her life.
- 21:45She has to find something new, or she has to find some way to
- 21:48the animals. Kids adopting animals, and she goes to the shelter. I
- 21:52think she was initially going to get one and injury addicted. Yeah, it
- 21:56gets addicted to saving them. Yeah. What did I enjoying about it?
- 22:00Well? I think just the whole It's a nice sort of button Lisa story
- 22:03by the end where he realized, you know, you're the one of the
- 22:06talent. Yes, yeah, I mean what's the name of the ice hockey
- 22:10one, Lisa? Lisa? And yeah, I mean the old one?
- 22:14Yeah, h listen, Yeah, yeah, I tend to enjoy episodes like
- 22:17that where sentimental. Yeah, I mean you ever, sister. I'm sure
- 22:22there are times when you're like I can't stand this fucking person and other times
- 22:25like, yeah, you rescue them from a weird pervert at the pub that
- 22:29we should revisit Lisa on ice. I don't think you and I have done
- 22:30it as a guy on Springfield. After check it out, we may have,
- 22:34But I love that one because that episode, perfectly orchestrat uh sort of
- 22:37demonstrates that sorry, where odds with your sister. But then there's the flashback
- 22:44where he remembers all the things, and they remember all things like the hurting
- 22:45her leg and putting the band it on and the ice cream, and it's
- 22:48just like, ah, fuck, you know, we hate each other,
- 22:52but it's like we've always been there for each other as well. Absolutely yeah,
- 22:55I love Lisa and Nice one of my favorite episodes of all time.
- 22:56If we haven't revisited it, we will do it. We'll do it again,
- 23:00doing it again. I think that's certainly one of the reasons why I
- 23:07enjoyed Jazzy and the Pussycadman. It's not quite Lisa and I was level,
- 23:11But when you've got a good storyline, or you know, just an idea
- 23:15that resonates and makes sense no matter what context you put it in there,
- 23:18you use it again. I had as my number two. I've gone with
- 23:22an episode that gave me the most golden ear vibes more than any episode I
- 23:26can remember in recent history, and it was Homerazi. I remember watching this
- 23:32and just being blown away by how much. I thought if you told me
- 23:34this was season eight, I'd buy into it. I just really really loved
- 23:37the idea of Homes as the paparazzi. It's again a job that you can
- 23:41really believe that he would be successful at. And I thought he just he
- 23:45wasn't a douchebag. But when he was a douchebag, he was just being
- 23:48a paparazz and that's what they are. Yeah, he's in a douchey line
- 23:53of work. So it was funny to see him being a douchebag because it's
- 23:56almost like they were taking the mickey out of it. Paparazzo is the singular,
- 24:00right, Yeah, taking the fun out at the paparazzo. Paparazzi,
- 24:07how would you say, making fun of making fun of the paparazzi, making
- 24:10fun of the paparaz Basically, because he was making fun of the paparazzi,
- 24:11you were able to laugh at him being a douche bay where normally would go,
- 24:15oh god, he is such a way gun. Oh this is more
- 24:17jerk as Homer behavior. But it fit this role. It really really did.
- 24:21And I just thought, yeah, that the this would have been an
- 24:22episode you could have crammed a lot of guest celebrity cameos into but they didn't,
- 24:26And I think I liked that because it made it feel more Springfield universe.
- 24:30Yeah, it wasn't we're grabbing the celebrities from the It was like,
- 24:33no, these are the Springfield celebrities. Yeah. And at the end,
- 24:37when they're all in their little club, yeah, human stem cells leaves it
- 24:42plat what are the compromising photos of Sacho Mele eating the American flag? Yes,
- 24:52what's it? Paris text and making out with mill that's right, Tatum
- 24:56snorting the acts of Secretariat and me Gwimby and Kent Brockman eye that bondage from
- 25:02doing role play. So you could have believed this would have been a story
- 25:07they may have tackled after Princess Diana's death. It may have been too close
- 25:10to yeah, too hard. Well, it's a bit of an evergreen topic,
- 25:14how just Yeah, crappy paparazzi in general. Yeah, at the same
- 25:18time, yeah, we're all complicit because like, ooh, check out those
- 25:22photos. I think at that time too, Team Z was really starting to
- 25:25take off and it was becoming paparazzi was becoming a thing. Well, yeah,
- 25:29it always been there, but the introduction of social media and the Internet
- 25:32and Team Z becoming a real established brand of Dave represent that we like the
- 25:36w WE of Paparazzi went very much. So, Yeah, it's amazing how
- 25:38you can sort of look upon old things with the stalagy. You look at
- 25:42the very early days of paparazzi. Will say that even up to the even
- 25:48up to anything in the twenty percent, even sorry, you can look at
- 25:52anything in the twentieth century like the paparazzi there it's like, oh, you
- 25:55know, it's gross, but it's also kind of hey, come over here.
- 25:57I don't think. Let me take a pure Robin Williams and job hanging
- 26:00out in a night class well as opposed to you look at it now.
- 26:04But I don't know if TMZ is solely this people just wanting to walk down
- 26:10the street, yeah, or you know, go out for dinner, hanging
- 26:12out at airports and it's like so and so a seth Rogan. How does
- 26:15it feel to be back in the Yeah, you just landed. How are
- 26:18you feeling's gone? For playing funk off? I mean, I think and
- 26:22they don't have anything to publicize. I like that has sort of come around
- 26:26where I think we now as a society and now accepting that leave these people
- 26:32alone. We get that they you know, the celebrities, and they should
- 26:33expect some sort of form of attention, But if they just sucking out the
- 26:37airport, like you said, leave them alone, I think we've turned on
- 26:40TMZ now. I think. But while well, I never enjoyed teams,
- 26:42but it was sort of seen as like, oh what they got for us
- 26:45this week. Now it's like funk off teams. Give him a break.
- 26:49It's a lot of people now with the wrestling community. It's people who bother
- 26:53them at the airports to get him to sign things, and they hold up
- 26:56like ten pictures sign sign. It's like, you're not a fan, and
- 27:00you're clearly going to go you're a flipper. Yeah, And now wrestlers have
- 27:03created this thing where they don't sign things at airports anymore, and the people
- 27:07are saying, oh, those preaks want well, you know, it's part
- 27:08of the job. It's like, well's actually not part of the job,
- 27:11no at all. No fuck based people. But yeah, so that is
- 27:15the top five. So I've gone with my top five running through they're all
- 27:18out of order because of you said them as well, because I was lazy
- 27:22and I didn't put numbers, but I've gone with My number five was ice
- 27:26cream of margin with the light blue hair. My number four the Moot,
- 27:29the Chef, the wife and her Homer, number three, Yokal Cords,
- 27:33number two, Homaratzi and number one being twenty four minutes. So what were
- 27:37your five? If you had to put them in an order? What would
- 27:38be your number one? Do you think? I think my number one would
- 27:41probably be twenty four minutes. There's an album of it's still fresh in their
- 27:47minds, I think. But also it was just a great episode, that's
- 27:48true. Yeah, it really was. In order, I would go twenty
- 27:52four minutes, Yocal Cords, Mona, Lisa, No sorry, twenty four
- 27:56minutes, Yoka Cards, Mook, Chef, wife, Homer, I want
- 28:00to Lisa, Jazzy and the Pussycats. So I got how many of yours
- 28:02got? Muke? Do you have Muke? And yours? I did?
- 28:06Yep, Jazzy into pussy Cats. You didn't have. If you can't always,
- 28:08I'm surprised if you can't. Yeah, yeah, I don't know.
- 28:11Maybe it was just a bit too close, and I think like, oh,
- 28:14am I choosing this because it was the last one we talked about in
- 28:17Trusperation. In my mind, I did like a lot of it, that's
- 28:18true. I thought you may have had stop on my dog will shoot.
- 28:22I think there were good parts of it, and there are also parts that
- 28:23was like, I don't know about this or I don't think it was bad.
- 28:26It just felt like was this one of those ones that felt like assembled
- 28:29out of various things as well? Some parts of it. Yeah, what
- 28:32was the episode where it's like you're taking this long to get to the that
- 28:36might have been there you can't Yeah, yeah, the episode? Alright,
- 28:41so I got three and you got how many? I think I got three
- 28:45as well? You guessed chords and twenty four minutes. Yeah, and also
- 28:49well I was gonna give do you get me the book as well, didn't
- 28:52you? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah, I think I put in Springfield up.
- 28:55Yeah. I hated that episode. Oh okay, I didn't hate it.
- 28:57You. I thought I was considering putting in for you. It was
- 29:00just one of those ones where the decling character doesn't do it for me.
- 29:03That's probably the reason why I didn't have it. I think I like the
- 29:07rest of it, and I think I put in a wholeharde couple because I
- 29:11know you thought about it, you like a Homer and Lisa repisd Yeah,
- 29:14I really thought because I love the idea of being a parent. Now,
- 29:15when you've read in the book and you game that's a little bit too much,
- 29:18I'm going to change it. Just make a little bit happier. There's
- 29:19nothing wrong with a little white lie. True. The worst episode ever?
- 29:25Now, I've gone with a new segment here we've already done. But what
- 29:29was your biggest disappointment for this season. I'm gonna throw mine out first,
- 29:32right, I've gone with Kill Gill Volumes one and two. We went into
- 29:36that with such high expectations of this is going to be great. It's a
- 29:38Gill episode, and it left us disliking Gill, and I don't think that
- 29:42would have been the intention very much the case. Yeah, No, I'm
- 29:45inclined to say that was probably the biggest disappointment. Absolutely. I mean there
- 29:48were episodes that were worse. I've got the Boys of Bummer and Romeold and
- 29:53Juliette were two absolute stinkers in my opinion, Romeo and Juliette. Juliette was
- 29:59disappointing in the sense that but there is a story there, but my god,
- 30:02it you knew not fucking executed properly. Oh absolutely. And the Boys
- 30:04of Bumma was just so that's a down up. Yeah, it was just
- 30:08so negative all the time. But Killed Gil. I went into that expecting
- 30:11so much more and it gave me nothing. I don't know if this was
- 30:14a disappointment as such, but I think an episode that really just let me
- 30:18down or let me feeling a bit was probably Marge Gamer. Really Okay,
- 30:22I didn't mind March going, but you didn't live through the whole BG,
- 30:25that's right, Yeah, where I had friends who were really in that scene
- 30:30and I so I can sort of relate to it in that sense. I
- 30:33never played them all that much, but I had friends who were big on
- 30:34World of Warcraft and that kind of thing, so I could sort of understand
- 30:37that and I didn't mind it. But anything else that didn't really sort of
- 30:41tickle your fancy. I mean, you did Revenge as a best as a
- 30:45dish best served three times without me, is that right? Yeah, That's
- 30:48why I didn't pick it, because we didn't do it together, which we
- 30:49should go back and do it because there was two stories in there that I
- 30:53remember really enjoying. There was, and they both felt like almost like treos
- 30:56of horror ones where there was they were, but I think it was like
- 31:00superheroes, like Bartman was one of them. And then sort of Millhos gets
- 31:04his device where you beat up bullies or something, and it was it was
- 31:07pretty fun. Okay, well we should do that at some stage. Yes,
- 31:10I think it was one of those ones I mentioned earlier that the three
- 31:14story episodes that I don't really enjoyed. This one was more of a hit
- 31:15than a miss, if I remember correctly. But yeah, but Kill Girls
- 31:18Volume one and two. Just remember thinking I don't want to dislike Gil,
- 31:22but it's hard not to now. Yeah. And at the end when he
- 31:26actually becomes a success and then Marge comes in and ruins it, I was
- 31:29like, who, No one comes out on top of here? Who are
- 31:30we cheering for? Yeah, everyone's a bad person in this bad behavior all
- 31:36round. Yeah, all right, Well, I think it's also in our
- 31:38time, since we're at the end of our top ten, that we do
- 31:41the wild card draw for season eighteen. Now we need to make an adjustment,
- 31:47do we we do? Yeah? Who was it. I found the
- 31:49messages after you messaged me because they went to a separate folder. This is
- 31:52our man, Jared Hornby. Hello Jared. He slid into my DMS,
- 31:59but not in the fun way because he pointed out a mistake that we had
- 32:01possibly made. Jared, hope you in my moment. I'm going to read
- 32:06this verbatim. Hi, mate, I sent it a message through to Dando,
- 32:08but I don't think it's gone to his inbox, but gone to message
- 32:10requests. I think I had the brock Bottom new name first for the last
- 32:15step. I know it doesn't mean too much, but it does in my
- 32:16heart. Have n't been in the running for a long time. That's on
- 32:20you, Jared. Change to Philip Jay Hawkins step one. Changed then to
- 32:28Philip Jay Hawkins step three, success by step two. But I then forwarded
- 32:36this to Dando, who then found it as well. So I've thrown him
- 32:38into the world. We have the men. The upshot is that, Jared,
- 32:42you're in the Wilkou drawer. Yes, who knows? All right,
- 32:45suddenly could happen. It's just magical, Right've added all these names into the
- 32:49randomizer. You give me the three second cannon. Click click, says,
- 32:53click, click, three, two one again to stop it tell me when
- 33:00to stop? Stop? All right, all right? How many times I've
- 33:05heard that my life. The winner of the wild card draw for season eighteen
- 33:15is let's redraw Hamish Wilson. Hamo, Hamo, Yeah, Hamish Wilson.
- 33:25So he was on three points. He must have got a three pointer.
- 33:29I'm assuming at some point maybe a too, maybe or maybe three singles.
- 33:34The possibilities are limitless, by which I mean there are three. So congratulation,
- 33:42Tames. Time is get We'll work that out. But get in touch
- 33:45with us Anders, uh will be the best way. It sends an email,
- 33:49actually, Simpsons mail bag at gmail dot com, and we will get
- 33:52in touch with you as to what your price shall be. But that is
- 33:54the end of season eighteen. You did it. Holy moly, we made
- 33:58it. Yeah, we were a little were we a little worried going in.
- 34:01We were very worried. We had a lot of people telling you you're
- 34:04gonna hate this one. It's gonna be a slog. This is when they
- 34:06made the movie. There's a lot of shit episodes. There was only one
- 34:08of the episodes where I went, ah, god, this is this is
- 34:10death. But even that though I thought overall it was fine that I think
- 34:16there were five standouts for me, but I definitely could have thrown a couple
- 34:19of others in there potentially. But the five episodes that I picked are five
- 34:22great episodes. Yeah, there were some really really strong go to Wyo episodes,
- 34:25and there was a lot of stuff in episodes that was like really good.
- 34:30I mean, I think we said on more than one occasion that's Golden
- 34:34Era and stuff, Well that's Vinted Simpson. You know, if this was
- 34:37in seasons six to nine or yeah, we'd go three to nine, three
- 34:42nine. That belongs. That absolutely fits. Yeah, the story of this
- 34:45season, I think is they were burned out and there's a lot of good
- 34:49ideas and rather than sort of focus on these ideas and make them a full
- 34:52flight episode, let's just throw shit at the wall. Let's patch these together,
- 34:55and you know it'll it'll be Simpson's brand fever. It's going to make
- 35:00us a lot of money. Since it's movie, it's got to have energy
- 35:02into that. But season nineteen is coming up, and it took a screenshot
- 35:07actually on Disney Plus. I've Season nineteen the first four episodes and each screenshot
- 35:12has a either Homer or Marge with a clearly a guest star of a new
- 35:16cap. I'm like, that's going to be one of those years. But
- 35:22boy, low expectations. If you keep your expectations rock bottom or rock bottom,
- 35:30then you'll never be disappointed. I'm going to be checking up a pole
- 35:31in the Patreon group for you guys to decide before we get into season nineteen,
- 35:36a classic episode for us to review. Ah start. Actually, I'm
- 35:39not going to do a poll. Let's just fucking pick one. Let's just
- 35:42pick one, surprise people, Lisa knows. Let's make sure we'ven done it
- 35:45first. Stick. I saw a funny meme the other day. I'm gonna
- 35:53say on the air, I'll tell you off the that must be a really
- 35:57funny amount. And pursuing the polls though, check out if you are a
- 36:04support of ours and Patreon vote for the next movie for the movie guys where
- 36:07we pit our team clean comedy, Yes, and decide which film we review
- 36:13for the month of April. Last month we did money Ball. Indeed,
- 36:16I'm not trying to sway any votes. They would never work anyway, because
- 36:21guys, the King of the Big Dad zero. But one of my choices
- 36:24was risky business putting on my film Nerd hat here. It's just been added
- 36:29to physical media label, the Criterion Collection, so the gold standard thereof it's
- 36:35like you're gonna get, you know, the original theatrical cut and the director's
- 36:37cut. So Criteria Collection. They're sort of like competitors with Umbrella. Is
- 36:42that what they are? Well? Nothing, nothing competes with Umbrella. It's
- 36:45just the best there is. Shout out to Umbrella, a friend of the
- 36:47pod. Stop stroking me, stap touching me, you're wearies. Criterion sort
- 36:54of more. It tends to be sort of art house stuff, but occasionally
- 37:00I'll throw in an important film that is nonetheless quite commercial. So I used
- 37:04to always hear criteria and commentaries, and I'm assuming they sort of just pay
- 37:07people to do commentaries on movies. Oh no, they've got sort of name
- 37:10brand stuff. So you know, dogs like me will go. You know,
- 37:14it's really good. It is creaton. It's sort of a short cut
- 37:16to establish a bona farde is a film dog? All right? Well that
- 37:21is our review. I've seasoned eighteen, have you guys? And John thinking
- 37:22he was sticking around for all those episodes we sort of it tried a bit
- 37:25longer this time because we revisited some classics and we had some guests time.
- 37:29It was a hell of a good time. The season nineteen begins in a
- 37:31couple of weeks the phenomena Davis Any find the words for those incredible listeners out
- 37:36there. See you in season nineteen. S
