- 0:01In June of 2023, I covered the haunting of the Smurrell family.
- 0:07That video did exceptionally well, but years later, having
- 0:11learned much more, I now realize that whatever sources I had at
- 0:16that time all weren't entirely accurate.
- 0:19So with the last Conjuring film, The Conjuring Last Rites coming
- 0:24out this week, I wanted to revisit this story and dive into
- 0:28the haunting itself as well as correct some misinformation and
- 0:33give my take on the case itself as well as how I feel about the
- 0:37warrants now. So with that being said, like
- 0:41this video? Subscribe and get yourself a
- 0:44drink or a snack and buckle up because you're in for a wild
- 0:49ride. The summer of 1972 was merciless
- 0:54in Pennsylvania's Wyoming Valley.
- 0:58The Susquehanna River burst its banks under the wrath of
- 1:02Hurricane Agnes, flooding whole towns and erasing homes.
- 1:08Among those displaced were Jack and Janet Smurl, a hard working
- 1:14couple. They salvage what they could and
- 1:17searched for a fresh start in the town of West Pittston, a
- 1:22quiet community known for its coal mining history in tightly
- 1:27packed row houses. By August of 1973, the Smurls
- 1:32had found what seemed like a blessing, a modest two-story
- 1:37duplex at 330 Chase St. Jack's parents, John and Mary,
- 1:44would occupy 1/2, while Jack, Janet and their four young
- 1:49daughters settled into the other.
- 1:52The arrangement was ideal, close family ties under one roof but
- 1:57with privacy on each side. The home, though weathered, was
- 2:02sturdy and filled with potential.
- 2:06Jack, recently promoted at work, was eager to renovate, and Janet
- 2:11embraced the chance to create a warm household.
- 2:15The Smurls were devout Catholics.
- 2:18Their walls quickly filled with crucifixes, rosaries, and the
- 2:23Sacred Heart. By all accounts, they were a
- 2:26model family in a working class town.
- 2:30But within months of moving in, the house began to resist their
- 2:35presence. It started with nuisances,
- 2:40stains bleeding through freshly painted walls, stubborn
- 2:44discolorations that returned no matter how many coats of paint
- 2:49Jack applied. Tools vanished from the
- 2:52workbench in the basement, only to turn up in odd places days
- 2:57later, Unplugged appliances sparked and smoked as if ignited
- 3:04by an invisible hand. On quiet afternoons, A sickly,
- 3:10foul stench crept through rooms, lingering for minutes before
- 3:15dissolving into nothing. The Smurls dismissed these early
- 3:20disturbances as quirks of an old house, or perhaps side effects
- 3:26of flood damaged wiring. But the house had begun
- 3:30whispering a different story, one that would grow darker with
- 3:35every passing year. By the early 1980's, the strange
- 3:40disturbances that multiplied. Jack's mother, Mary, suffered a
- 3:45heart attack, leaving the family shaken.
- 3:50Financial struggles mounted despite Jack's earlier
- 3:54promotion. As the stresses of daily life
- 3:57pressed down. The house seemed to mirror their
- 4:00tension, growing more hostile and unpredictable.
- 4:07It began with voices. Janet heard what she swore was
- 4:12Mary calling her name, only to find Mary sitting silently next
- 4:17door. Mary, in turn, claimed she heard
- 4:21Jack and Janet in heated arguments, screaming, swearing
- 4:27and shouting at one another. Yet the young couple hadn't
- 4:31uttered a word. Disembodied calls echoed between
- 4:35the duplex walls, sewing confusion and unease.
- 4:41At night, Janet awoke to the sensation of being touched by
- 4:46unseen hands. More than once, she reported the
- 4:50horrifying violation of being sexually assaulted in her sleep
- 4:56by a presence she could neither see nor resist.
- 5:01Jack remained skeptical until his own encounter shook him to
- 5:05the core. One night, he was jolted awake
- 5:09by the sound of a woman whispering.
- 5:13As he turned to speak to Janet, his eyes locked on a shadowy
- 5:17figure crawling up her leg and darting across her body before
- 5:22vanishing. It was no dream.
- 5:27Jack could no longer deny what was happening in their home.
- 5:32Soon, dark masses drifted through hallways, formless,
- 5:37shifting clouds that left behind a sense of dread.
- 5:41Janet began to fear bedtime, knowing that whatever plagued
- 5:46their house was most active at night.
- 5:49The entity escalated from voices and shapes to direct physical
- 5:54assault. Janet recounted being lifted and
- 5:58hurled across the room by invisible hands, crashing into
- 6:03furniture with brutalizing force.
- 6:07The children, too, began to hear unearthly sounds, bloodcurdling
- 6:12screams reverberating through the walls, mingling with low,
- 6:18animalistic grunts that seemed to vibrate in the very air
- 6:22itself. The attacks spread beyond
- 6:26people. Their German shepherd, Simon,
- 6:31was once picked up and thrown into a wall.
- 6:35The children endured sudden shoves, with one even tumbling
- 6:40halfway down the basement stairs.
- 6:43On another night, a ceiling light fixture crashed to the
- 6:47floor, striking their daughter Shannon and splitting her
- 6:51forehead open. And then there were the most
- 6:55intimate horrors. Jack later claimed that he too
- 7:00had been sexually assaulted by an unseen force.
- 7:04Dragged, pinned and violated in ways that he could barely bring
- 7:10himself to describe, he spoke of being attacked while praying,
- 7:15forced to his knees, bruised by blows from nowhere.
- 7:21On one evening, he recounted being assaulted by a succubus
- 7:26like presence on the living room sofa as a baseball game played
- 7:31on the television. The neighbors noticed as well.
- 7:36Those living nearby sometimes heard terrible screams echoing
- 7:40from the Smirrel home, only to discover that no one inside had
- 7:45made a sound. Even when the house was empty,
- 7:50cries and crashes spilled into the night air.
- 7:54Something inhuman had made a claim on 330 Chase St.
- 8:01For the Smirrels, life had become a waking nightmare.
- 8:05The walls of their home were no longer a sanctuary.
- 8:09They were a prison. And the demon within was only
- 8:14growing bolder. In January of 1986, the Smurls
- 8:20reached out to Ed and Lorraine Warren, demonologists from
- 8:25Connecticut. The Warrens were no strangers to
- 8:29the media spotlight. Amityville had already made them
- 8:33famous, but what awaited them in West Pittston, they claimed, was
- 8:39among the most violent hauntings they had ever encountered.
- 8:44On their very first night in the house and invoked the name of
- 8:47Christ, sprinkling holy water and oil around the rooms.
- 8:53The temperature plunged 30°. Objects on a nearby desk began
- 8:59to rattle and fall off. The mattress rose into the air
- 9:04and then slammed back down in a black, shapeless mass
- 9:09materialized before him, throbbing with malevolence.
- 9:15Lorraine, who was sensitive to spirits, described a cluster of
- 9:20entities throughout the home. An elderly woman, a spirit that
- 9:25was benign but trapped. The presence of a young girl,
- 9:30one that was restless and volatile, and a man who had died
- 9:35within the house. And behind them all, a demon
- 9:40orchestrating the torment, manipulating them like puppets.
- 9:46The Warrens claimed the demon was intelligent, cunning and
- 9:51powerful. It taunted Ed by scrawling
- 9:55obscenities and smoky mucus like script across a mirror.
- 10:00They recorded hours of knocks, bangs, and guttural voices.
- 10:06But no matter how many times Ed commanded it to leave in
- 10:09Christ's name, the entity only grew more violent.
- 10:15For the Smurrels, the Warrens arrival was both a relief and a
- 10:19revelation. At last, outsiders had seen what
- 10:23they had endured. Yet the torment did not cease.
- 10:28The Warrens urged the family to stay strong in faith while they
- 10:32petitioned the Catholic Church for an exorcism.
- 10:36But the demons seemed to relish the challenge.
- 10:39It would not be cast out easily. By summer 1986, the Smurl's
- 10:45private nightmare had become a national spectacle.
- 10:50Reporter swarmed Chase St. Camera crews camped outside.
- 10:56News anchors spoke of the West Pittston demon.
- 11:00The family appeared on Larry King Live and Entertainment
- 11:04Tonight, their quiet lives shattered under the glare of
- 11:08public fascination. Dozens of journalists crowded
- 11:12their lawn daily, and Janet later lamented that they had
- 11:17hoped for help but instead received 150 interview requests
- 11:23and people camping outside their home instead.
- 11:26The haunting had gone viral before the word existed in its
- 11:30current context. Neighbors, once sympathetic,
- 11:35grew weary of the constant commotion.
- 11:38Skeptics seized their chance. Paul Kurtz of CSICOP dismissed
- 11:46the case as a hoax, A charade, a ghost story.
- 11:51But the Smurls stood firm. They pointed out that over 30
- 11:54witnesses had experienced the phenomena.
- 11:58Neighbors, relatives, priests. And still the pounding, the
- 12:03screams, and the assaults continued.
- 12:07As the Warrens documented their findings, the Smaugle saw what
- 12:11they believed was the only true weapon against evil.
- 12:15The Catholic Church priests were called into the duplex.
- 12:20They blessed the rooms, sprinkled holy water, and prayed
- 12:24over every threshold. The entity responded with
- 12:28mocking laughter, foul stenches, and violent manifestations. 3
- 12:35separate private exorcisms were attempted by an out of state
- 12:38priest and each failed. The family insisted that the
- 12:43demons slipped between the two halves of the duplex.
- 12:47When one side was blessed, it simply fled to the other,
- 12:52waiting until the prayers ceased before returning with greater
- 12:56vengeance. On one family trip in their
- 12:59camper, the demon followed them. Thunderous bang shook the
- 13:04trailer roof, seemingly reminding them that there was no
- 13:09escape. Neighbors now spoke in hushed
- 13:12tones. Chase St. had become a stage for
- 13:16terror. Some swore they still heard
- 13:18screams. Others avoided eye contact,
- 13:23hoping that the darkness would not contaminate them.
- 13:27Still, the Smurls prayed their rosaries each evening.
- 13:31Statues of Saints crowded their shelves.
- 13:35Saint Michael the Archangel was invoked nightly.
- 13:39By late October of 1986, Reverend Joseph Adonicio
- 13:44declared that prayers had driven the demon out and that things
- 13:49were back to normal. The Smurls cautiously agreed,
- 13:53though shadows still lingered at the edges of their Knights.
- 13:58Peace was fragile. In 1987, Janet admitted that
- 14:03Knox and fleeting shadows still haunted the duplex, but the
- 14:07family was exhausted. The children deserved normalcy,
- 14:12and so in 1988, after 13 years on Chase St. the Smurls sold
- 14:18their half of the house and moved to the Wilkes Bar area.
- 14:24A new residents reported no unusual activity.
- 14:27To skeptics, this was proof that the Haunting was a fabrication,
- 14:32but to the faithful, it meant the demon had been bound to the
- 14:35Smurl family themselves and not the building.
- 14:39Either way, 330 Chase St. stood quiet again.
- 14:44Ordinary on the outside, infamous in memory.
- 14:49The Smurls closed the door on their nightmare, but their story
- 14:53was far from over. In late 1986, just months after
- 14:58the height of the Haunting, journalist Robert Curran, in
- 15:02collaboration with the Smurls and the Warrens, released The
- 15:06Haunted One Family's Nightmare. The book was marketed as a
- 15:11chilling first hand chronicle of what the Smurls had endured.
- 15:16It sold briskly. Readers were captivated by the
- 15:20detailed accounts of invisible assaults, levitations and
- 15:25demonic taunts. But critics were unforgiving.
- 15:30Reviewers dismissed it as A1 sided and sensational story,
- 15:35accusing Quran of abandoning journalistic integrity.
- 15:39The Wilkes Barre Times leader called it poorly written and
- 15:43impossible to believe. For the Smurls, the book was not
- 15:47about the fame, it was their testimony.
- 15:51They wanted people to know what had happened even if the world
- 15:54sneered. But the publication tied their
- 15:57name forever to the haunting. There would be no true escape.
- 16:03In 1991, their ordeal was adapted into a made for TV film,
- 16:08The Haunted, produced by 20th Century Fox.
- 16:13The movie aired in prime time starring Jeffrey Damone and
- 16:18Sally Kirkland as Jack and Janet.
- 16:21The script Co written by Quran. The Warrens and the Smirrels
- 16:26themselves dramatized the horrors of Chase St., The
- 16:31levitations, browls, obscenities on mirrors, the desperate
- 16:36prayers of a family under siege. For millions of viewers across
- 16:41America, the Smurl haunting became more than a headline.
- 16:46It became a cinematic nightmare. The film cemented the Smurls as
- 16:51reluctant figures in paranormal history.
- 16:54Their names were now spoken in the same breath as Amityville,
- 16:59Enfield and other infamous cases.
- 17:03But with recognition came further skepticism.
- 17:06The family's desire for privacy deepened.
- 17:10By the late 1980's, the Smurls had settled into a new home.
- 17:15Their life was calmer. The children grew up and the
- 17:19family healed. The old duplex became someone
- 17:23else's problem, or perhaps nothing at all.
- 17:28Jack and Janet rarely spoke publicly again following the
- 17:32media circus. In 2017, Jack Smirrell passed
- 17:37away at age 75. His daughter Karen shared that
- 17:42he had finally put the nightmare behind him.
- 17:45Inspired by her family's ordeal, Karen occasionally worked as a
- 17:50paranormal investigator, helping others who felt trapped by
- 17:54forces that they couldn't explain.
- 17:58We had such a hard time and nobody to turn to.
- 18:01She would later say he was happy.
- 18:04I was a voice out there for people who needed help.
- 18:07In reference to her father. Today, the house at 330 Chase
- 18:12St. still stands, ordinary on the outside yet legendary among
- 18:17ghost hunters. No new reports of paranormal
- 18:20activity have surfaced, but the story endures.
- 18:25In the twenty 20s, renewed interest in the Warrens case
- 18:28files brought the Smirrel Haunting back into the
- 18:31spotlight. The producers of The Conjuring
- 18:34franchise announced that their upcoming installment, The
- 18:37Conjuring Last Rites, coming out this year in 2025 would draw
- 18:42heavily from the Smurl case. Once again.
- 18:46It seems the world will watch a dramatized version what the
- 18:49family had claimed nearly destroyed them.
- 18:53The Smurl Haunting remains one of the most controversial and
- 18:56infamous alleged demonic infestations in American
- 19:00history. The believer cited as proof of
- 19:03genuine evil a case where faith alone kept a family alive.
- 19:09Skeptics dismiss it as hysteria, fabrication or
- 19:13misinterpretation. But for Jack and Janet, for
- 19:18their children and their neighbors, it was not a theory.
- 19:21It was a livid experience. For them, the house on Chase St.
- 19:27was not just a duplex, it was a battlefield.
- 19:30The ordinary collided with the unholy.
- 19:35Now that I've given you a brief overview of the case itself with
- 19:39corrected details, I want to specifically address some of the
- 19:43things I got wrong in my original video to set the story
- 19:47straight so to speak. I'll do my best to link the 2 so
- 19:52that people can get more of a first hand experience feel from
- 19:55the first video, but have the facts from this video as well if
- 19:59that makes sense. I did speak about an entity
- 20:03seemingly causing the stains to manifest through the paint when
- 20:06the swirls were renovating, so no matter how many coats of
- 20:10paint they put on, these stains would come through.
- 20:14They also appeared on the floors as well as the walls.
- 20:18That aspect, as far as I've researched, is true, but I do
- 20:21recall saying that Jack was attacked by this entity in my
- 20:24video, and albeit that perhaps could have been true, they could
- 20:29have been one in the same. But at that time I was extremely
- 20:33worried about YouTube's rules and I did not want to mention
- 20:36that it sexually assaulted Jack or Janet multiple times.
- 20:41So my apologies there. But I want to be as accurate as
- 20:44I can, and hopefully with this video was a guide you can get
- 20:48the fullest story alongside watching my original video.
- 20:52With that cleared up, there are also several very interesting
- 20:56questions and points that I'd like to address.
- 21:00People often ask me what my opinion on the Warrants is, and
- 21:04I can tell you now that it's much different than when I made
- 21:07the initial video on the Smirrel Haunting.
- 21:10Before I share my opinions, I do want to say that I do respect
- 21:14the Warrens for pioneering making a living researching the
- 21:18paranormal because I do think that their work helped many
- 21:22creators over the years and since be able to do the same.
- 21:27Unfortunately, whether it's been with or without integrity for
- 21:30some. But my opinion is that I think
- 21:34the warrants perhaps started out with the right intentions, but
- 21:38as years went on they've turned into grifters.
- 21:41They essentially developed a formula on how to create
- 21:44sensationalism surrounding a case, whether the case was
- 21:48supposedly A legitimate haunting or not, in order to profit.
- 21:52As far as I know the only means they had at making money was
- 21:56from Ed selling his paintings, them selling their books, which
- 22:00would be an example of said formula and or media appearances
- 22:04in relation with hauntings and later movie deals.
- 22:09And as many have said, it didn't necessarily matter if the family
- 22:13profited or not either, which many of the families did.
- 22:17For example, a family allegedly experiences a haunting, the
- 22:22Warrens find out and get involved, and then they
- 22:25effectively become business partners, publishing books,
- 22:29media kits, etcetera together. Thus, whenever they're involved
- 22:33in a case that I cover or learn about, it really makes me
- 22:37question the validity of it. Sadly, just given what we know
- 22:41now, I can't help but feel that way.
- 22:45Now, As for the Smirrel case in particular, these are my
- 22:48opinions. I do think it's possible that
- 22:51the family did experience something legitimate, whether
- 22:54that was paranormal as in a spirit haunting the place, or
- 22:58even, as it's been suggested, poltergeist activity manifesting
- 23:03as a result of the teenage girls.
- 23:05It's hard to say there, but considering I've had some very
- 23:09real experiences in my life that I would consider to be extremely
- 23:13dark, if not demonic. It's not entirely out of the
- 23:17realm of possibility that what the Smurls experienced was of a
- 23:21diabolical nature, especially considering the sexual assaults
- 23:26and foul odors, etcetera. But it seems that with almost
- 23:31every Warren case it becomes a demonic haunting.
- 23:36Now it could have been real or it could have been a
- 23:38misinterpretation of other paranormal phenomena, but I do
- 23:42become extra skeptical because of the Warren's involvement and
- 23:47their formulaic strategy given the other cases they were and
- 23:51would later be involved in. Another thing that makes me
- 23:55skeptical is the fact that the Smurls were devout Catholics.
- 23:59As someone who was raised Catholic myself, I do think as a
- 24:03result of the beliefs that it makes one more susceptible to
- 24:07believing that something could potentially be supernatural.
- 24:11That's not to say that it's not possible for things to be so.
- 24:15I mean, I just covered a family in Taiwan who was non religious
- 24:20that experienced a rather malicious haunting.
- 24:23But I would argue that there are probably an overwhelming number
- 24:26of cases percentage wise where those who are the victims or the
- 24:31haunted are of that belief system.
- 24:34Again, not all. And this is not to disparage
- 24:37anybody or their beliefs. It's simply a pattern that I,
- 24:42and I'm sure many others, have recognized.
- 24:45I did also see that Jax Murrell had had brain surgery in 1983 to
- 24:50address memory loss caused by a past case of meningitis, a
- 24:55procedure that some critics and skeptics suggested may have
- 24:58clouded his judgment and could provide an alternative
- 25:01explanation for the paranormal events.
- 25:05However, considering he was not the only member of the family or
- 25:09the only other person to experience the alleged
- 25:12phenomena, I find this detail to be kind of irrelevant.
- 25:17Like perhaps someone was trying to find additional reasons or
- 25:20what have you as to why the family said they experienced
- 25:24what they had. There is much more that can be
- 25:27said on this case and the Warrens as a whole, and I'm
- 25:31lucky to have two friends who are fantastic in their research
- 25:35and just for great people in general that I'd like to shout
- 25:38out as well as urge you to check out because their content dives
- 25:42deep on these very types of questions, especially
- 25:45surrounding the Warrens and other questionable figures.
- 25:49I'd be my friend Stevie over at Truth or Demons podcast who sent
- 25:53me some great resources during my rehashed research for this
- 25:56video, and my good friend Florio over at Florio's Phantom Files.
- 26:02Definitely check them out, subscribe and learn something
- 26:05new because you definitely will. I know this one was a revisited
- 26:09case, but it's certainly, at least at the moment, is a pretty
- 26:13relevant 1 to revisit if I don't say so myself.
- 26:16And I've been itching to correct some information that I got
- 26:19wrong for a good while, so the opportunity just seemed right.
