- 0:54Speaker 1: Hey, everybody, welcome in to another episode of the Tailgate,
- 0:58Speaker 1: brought to you by tikket Master. It is the day
- 1:03Speaker 1: before Halloween, and it is three days before your Minnesota
- 1:08Speaker 1: Vikings take on the Detroit Lions. And joining me in
- 1:13Speaker 1: place of Chad. Chad gets a couple of breaks this year,
- 1:16Speaker 1: and he gets a couple of breaks because we have
- 1:18Speaker 1: show favorites that need to come on and talk about
- 1:22Speaker 1: their team. This week, we have the most recurrent guest
- 1:26Speaker 1: in the history of the tailgate, Detroit Lions super fan,
- 1:30Speaker 1: a guy who was more fun to talk to when
- 1:33Speaker 1: their team was bad and our team was way better.
- 1:37Speaker 1: Ladies and gentlemen, the great Zach Martine and Zach, we
- 1:42Speaker 1: have to listen to me. We have to talk about
- 1:45Speaker 1: this upcoming game. We have to talk about what I
- 1:48Speaker 1: need to be a get right game. I think this
- 1:50Speaker 1: is an excellent get right opportunity for my team. But
- 1:56Speaker 1: I need to start with something we touched on. I
- 1:59Speaker 1: think the first time you were ever on the show.
- 2:02Speaker 1: Because it's Halloween weekend, I saw this article and it
- 2:06Speaker 1: was talking about all the weirdest stuff that's ever happened
- 2:09Speaker 1: in Detroit and with the Lions, and on and on
- 2:12Speaker 1: and on, and one of the things in there, it's
- 2:15Speaker 1: the Bobby Lane curse.
- 2:16Speaker 2: Oh yeah.
- 2:18Speaker 1: So for those who haven't listened to the show or
- 2:20Speaker 1: don't go that far back with the show. So in
- 2:25Speaker 1: nineteen fifty eight, the Lions trade Bobby Lane to Pittsburgh.
- 2:30Speaker 1: To Pittsburgh, and he's a star, right he is.
- 2:33Speaker 2: He is the Patrick Mahomes of his time.
- 2:36Speaker 1: They trade him and he places a fifty year curse
- 2:41Speaker 1: on the Detroit Lions, and I love sports curses. I
- 2:45Speaker 1: think they're so, you know, the Red Sox thing, the
- 2:48Speaker 1: Cubs thing until they got broken. At some point, whether
- 2:51Speaker 1: the curse is real or just it begins to believe
- 2:55Speaker 1: itself and you can't. I don't know what happens. But
- 2:59Speaker 1: in the case of the Bobby Lane curse, it runs
- 3:02Speaker 1: nineteen fifty eight. It's supposed to end in two thousand
- 3:04Speaker 1: and eight.
- 3:05Speaker 2: And it was adjusted for inflation. So that's it lasts,
- 3:08Speaker 2: it's gone, and what a few years longer than that.
- 3:11Speaker 1: Well, here's what I would say is super interesting. The
- 3:13Speaker 1: last year of the curse, your team went oh and sixteen,
- 3:18Speaker 1: which is a wild way, and in that fifty years
- 3:22Speaker 1: you lost more games than any team in the entire league,
- 3:26Speaker 1: and you end on an oh and sixteen. Then you
- 3:29Speaker 1: got Stafford, yep, and now you're moving forward and now
- 3:32Speaker 1: out of the it's almost like it's real. That's as
- 3:35Speaker 1: my I guess my question to start, as I babble
- 3:38Speaker 1: through the beginning of this show is how real is
- 3:40Speaker 1: it to Detroit fans? Because Stafford led to golf with
- 3:44Speaker 1: led to all these changes, Dan, here we go and
- 3:47Speaker 1: now you are a multi year championship contending team that
- 3:52Speaker 1: people are picking at the beginning of the season, do
- 3:54Speaker 1: you buy this? Are you all in on the Bobby
- 3:58Speaker 1: Lane Curse? And now that it's over, you're off and running.
- 4:01Speaker 2: I would be hard pressed to find a Detroit Lions
- 4:04Speaker 2: fan that does not believe in the Bobby Lane Curse.
- 4:06Speaker 2: Because we needed a reason. We needed a reason that
- 4:10Speaker 2: we were like, Okay, well this is this can't be
- 4:13Speaker 2: just the organization. This can't just be our team is
- 4:16Speaker 2: it's in the universe, it's intergalactic, it's whatever words you
- 4:21Speaker 2: want to use. But it was at least a reason
- 4:23Speaker 2: we could say, well, yeah, but you know we've got this,
- 4:26Speaker 2: Like I mean, Calvin Johnson was on the team before
- 4:28Speaker 2: Matthew Stafford and he was part of that and oh
- 4:31Speaker 2: and sixteen team. When you have a receiver like that,
- 4:34Speaker 2: you have Barry Sanders. I mean people out there that
- 4:38Speaker 2: aren't even Lions fans that are still watching highlights of
- 4:41Speaker 2: Barry Sanders and Calvin Johnson's The plays that they made
- 4:43Speaker 2: were ridiculous. And to be part of a fifty years
- 4:47Speaker 2: stretch where you are losing more games than any other
- 4:49Speaker 2: team in the franchise, you have to have a reason
- 4:52Speaker 2: because it doesn't make sense when you have players of
- 4:55Speaker 2: that caliber. It just doesn't.
- 4:57Speaker 1: So is there now that you're this new team and
- 5:00Speaker 1: my team is coming off, I would say, you know,
- 5:05Speaker 1: from a fan standpoint, one of the more difficult losses
- 5:11Speaker 1: in the Kevin O'Connell era, right, And I think that
- 5:15Speaker 1: just that sentence speaks to how impressive the coaching staff
- 5:19Speaker 1: has been. I always use the example. You can use
- 5:22Speaker 1: a ton of them, but winning a game with Josh
- 5:24Speaker 1: Dobbs calling the plays into the headset in Atlanta like
- 5:29Speaker 1: the overcoming adversity, you know, has finally this team has
- 5:34Speaker 1: finally arrived in the place where it felt like adversity
- 5:39Speaker 1: steam rolled them against the Chargers. And I think everybody
- 5:42Speaker 1: went whoa, and everybody, you know, fans are stepped back,
- 5:46Speaker 1: and we're not quite where we expected we would be.
- 5:49Speaker 1: So this game this week is so interesting to me
- 5:53Speaker 1: because it's it's potentially a fork in the road. Right,
- 5:57Speaker 1: You're playing one of the best teams in the NFL. Well,
- 6:00Speaker 1: you believe yourself to be a very good football team.
- 6:05Speaker 1: Are you gonna do what everybody in the media and
- 6:07Speaker 1: a lot of negative fans are saying, Are you gonna
- 6:09Speaker 1: get rolled by the Lions or is this gonna be
- 6:12Speaker 1: the game where everybody went. Then they went in and
- 6:14Speaker 1: took care of Detroit and they're building, turned the season
- 6:17Speaker 1: around and went going. So you know, there's a lot
- 6:19Speaker 1: of pivot points in NFL seasons, but this one feels
- 6:22Speaker 1: like it potentially could be one for a team that
- 6:25Speaker 1: is in desperate need of it. Is there any is
- 6:28Speaker 1: there any part of your little fan brain that feels
- 6:33Speaker 1: that you might be vulnerable to a desperate team coming
- 6:38Speaker 1: in and punching you in the face.
- 6:40Speaker 2: Let me, let me go ahead and show you how
- 6:42Speaker 2: little my fan brain is. I'm not gonna take your bait.
- 6:45Speaker 2: I'm not gonna take your bait of insulting me and
- 6:48Speaker 2: coming at me saying I have a little brain. I
- 6:50Speaker 2: have a size eight head, all right. When I played
- 6:53Speaker 2: football in high school, they had do special order a helmet.
- 6:56Speaker 2: All right, when you knock on this skull, it is
- 6:58Speaker 2: not hollow. It's not little SI, thank you, and I
- 7:01Speaker 2: it is not. It is a big brain. It is
- 7:03Speaker 2: a big old brain. But I don't I'm I mean,
- 7:07Speaker 2: I'm always nervous because I've been hurt in the past,
- 7:10Speaker 2: but coming off of a bye, our team getting a
- 7:14Speaker 2: little bit healthy, you know, we've been decimated in the secondary,
- 7:17Speaker 2: but that last game, I think you'd find a lot
- 7:21Speaker 2: of Lions fans who think that this defense will play
- 7:25Speaker 2: harder for Kelvin Shepherd than they did for Aaron Glenn.
- 7:28Speaker 2: I don't know what it is. It's but this guy
- 7:31Speaker 2: rallies the troops and you can see that. So coming
- 7:34Speaker 2: off of a Monday night game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers,
- 7:37Speaker 2: who have, I mean the early favorite for offensive Rookie
- 7:41Speaker 2: of the Year, a returning Mike Evans, I mean, their
- 7:43Speaker 2: receiving corps is no thing to just sneeze at. To
- 7:47Speaker 2: have those guys step up and play under Kelvin Shephard
- 7:51Speaker 2: was huge. Now that makes me a little bit more
- 7:54Speaker 2: confident in our depth because we do have a lot
- 7:56Speaker 2: of those guys returning. DJ Reid isn't necessarily yet, but
- 7:59Speaker 2: we get Branch back, We're gonna get Joseph back. We
- 8:01Speaker 2: can I think we're gonna get Avonte Maddox back. A
- 8:04Speaker 2: Meek Robertson has just got that dog in him and
- 8:06Speaker 2: he showed that against Tampa Bay. And then we also
- 8:10Speaker 2: got Aleam mcneilback, who is now coming He played one game,
- 8:14Speaker 2: he's coming back. Off of a bye, and that's not
- 8:15Speaker 2: a defensive tackle that just stuffs the run. He is
- 8:18Speaker 2: eating up space in the middle and rushing the passer
- 8:20Speaker 2: from the interior of the line. I feel really good
- 8:23Speaker 2: coming off of the bye. I feel really good coming
- 8:25Speaker 2: off of the bye. Who will come into at a
- 8:29Speaker 2: home game, no less.
- 8:30Speaker 1: All I'm hearing, Zach. All I'm hearing is everything that
- 8:34Speaker 1: I said, the opportunity that when when it happens, Because
- 8:39Speaker 1: here's the thing. You gave you a little speech about
- 8:41Speaker 1: your brain, and now it triggered me, so now I'm
- 8:43Speaker 1: against you. All I'm hearing is the accomplishment for when
- 8:49Speaker 1: we pivot correctly against your team will be even greater
- 8:53Speaker 1: because there are no excuses. You're off a bye, you're healthy.
- 8:58Speaker 1: But can you answer me this? What are the odds? So,
- 9:03Speaker 1: because I've watched you guys a lot this year, Dan,
- 9:06Speaker 1: I just I just need this to be one of
- 9:08Speaker 1: those games, Zach where Dan Campbell makes a couple of
- 9:11Speaker 1: the decisions that I want this to be one of
- 9:14Speaker 1: the weeks where you go, ah, I'd love that one back.
- 9:17Speaker 1: A couple of those fourth down, a couple of the
- 9:19Speaker 1: gutsy risky calls because here's the thing. It can't always work.
- 9:24Speaker 1: You know it works more than it doesn't. That's how,
- 9:26Speaker 1: that's how you know you choose to keep doing it.
- 9:29Speaker 1: But I need that risky behavior to bite them this week.
- 9:34Speaker 1: That's what I need. I need that Niners game, you know,
- 9:37Speaker 1: the playoffs a couple of years ago. I need a
- 9:39Speaker 1: couple of risky decisions to bite you, guys, because here,
- 9:43Speaker 1: here's what I'll tell you. I think the Vikings deserve
- 9:46Speaker 1: a little good favor this week. And I don't have
- 9:48Speaker 1: a reason for that. Maybe it's my emotional state going
- 9:53Speaker 1: into the game, but I think we need to come
- 9:56Speaker 1: ready to play. And I would love to see you,
- 9:58Speaker 1: guys just take a little bit of that c Detroit
- 10:01Speaker 1: risk taking mentality that has somehow developed in a very
- 10:04Speaker 1: short period of time despite being put through a fifty
- 10:07Speaker 1: year curse. I would love a little bit of that
- 10:10Speaker 1: to bite you. Just step up and snap you sy.
- 10:14Speaker 2: I understand what you want here, and you're you know what,
- 10:17Speaker 2: you know what you're asking for it you're asking for
- 10:19Speaker 2: a treat, and I think you're about to be tricked. Halloween.
- 10:24Speaker 1: I'll cancel this show right now. You know what, I'm
- 10:26Speaker 1: just realizing in the history of you being on the show.
- 10:30Speaker 1: You've been on the show for three years before this season.
- 10:33Speaker 1: The first season, we were very good with Kirk and
- 10:36Speaker 1: you were having that season where you beat Green Bay
- 10:38Speaker 1: at the end of the year and you were like
- 10:40Speaker 1: turning around. You had the major season before the season.
- 10:43Speaker 1: Second season, you had a really great year. We didn't
- 10:45Speaker 1: have a reason to feel bad because we had a
- 10:47Speaker 1: quarterback situation that we were battling through. Third year, we're
- 10:51Speaker 1: both great. We play each other. It sucks that we
- 10:54Speaker 1: lost to you at the end of the season, but
- 10:56Speaker 1: we're both great. We're both feeling good. This is the
- 10:58Speaker 1: first year that there's some angst in this conversation between
- 11:02Speaker 1: you and I. This is the first year where you're
- 11:04Speaker 1: still doing well and we're not doing the things we
- 11:08Speaker 1: want to be doing. And I gotta tell you, I
- 11:11Speaker 1: hate it.
- 11:12Speaker 2: I buddy, I'll tell you. The angst is all on
- 11:14Speaker 2: one side, all right.
- 11:15Speaker 1: I understand. So you have an ad I've never noticed
- 11:19Speaker 1: the attitude and tell my team is not where I
- 11:22Speaker 1: need it.
- 11:25Speaker 2: I you know what, I just I'm taking it one
- 11:27Speaker 2: game at a time. Got it all thanks to you know,
- 11:30Speaker 2: coach Campbell. He makes some great calls and uh, that
- 11:33Speaker 2: Campbell gamble really does come into play. You're gonna see it,
- 11:36Speaker 2: You're gonna get it. But uh, you're not gonna you're
- 11:41Speaker 2: gonna get When I said you're gonna get tricked, you're
- 11:43Speaker 2: gonna get hit with at least two trick plays and
- 11:45Speaker 2: they are.
- 11:46Speaker 1: Are they still that prevalent? Are the trick plays still
- 11:49Speaker 1: that prevalent?
- 11:49Speaker 2: Oh? You guys, Oh yeah, I would say I would
- 11:52Speaker 2: argue that. I mean, it's tough to say because over
- 11:54Speaker 2: the years of the past couple of years, our offense
- 11:56Speaker 2: has been pretty balanced, but it is more so this year,
- 12:02Speaker 2: and that is because Johnny Morton, our new offensive coordinator.
- 12:05Speaker 2: He is he has an affinity for the play action,
- 12:07Speaker 2: so he even more so has to establish the run.
- 12:11Speaker 2: You're gonna see a lot of Junior Gibbs. I hope
- 12:14Speaker 2: you see a little bit more of David Montgomery. I'd
- 12:16Speaker 2: like to see that split go back to a bit
- 12:19Speaker 2: more even time share just for wear and tear purposes.
- 12:22Speaker 2: But I think you're gonna see I think you're gonna
- 12:25Speaker 2: see something out of Jamison Williams this week. He is
- 12:28Speaker 2: he's been a little quiet, but he has too much
- 12:30Speaker 2: speed and too much talent to just continue to be quiet,
- 12:35Speaker 2: especially at home, especially off the buy, when you've got
- 12:37Speaker 2: all that time to kind of script up your playbook.
- 12:40Speaker 2: I think you're gonna see some real big plays from
- 12:43Speaker 2: I'll be honest, all of our playmakers and maybe even
- 12:46Speaker 2: our second string tight end, rock Right. That's right, brock Right.
- 12:51Speaker 1: You you just laid out a lot of stuff, but
- 12:53Speaker 1: you you went to the place that you are predicting
- 12:56Speaker 1: against us success from a backup tight end. I can't
- 13:00Speaker 1: be in such a place with you that I'm listening
- 13:03Speaker 1: to you gleefully tell me that in a division matchup,
- 13:08Speaker 1: I expect an excellent game from a second string tight end.
- 13:12Speaker 1: I can't do it. You know how much you would
- 13:14Speaker 1: hate me if I came on here and predicted a
- 13:17Speaker 1: monster day receiving from our backup tight end. It would
- 13:22Speaker 1: just it wouldn't be good.
- 13:24Speaker 2: I know. But you didn't let me finish the context
- 13:26Speaker 2: of it.
- 13:27Speaker 1: You want to stop talking. It felt like the context.
- 13:29Speaker 2: No, I didn't. I took a I took a breath,
- 13:32Speaker 2: and you're like, I can't, I can't do it. Here's
- 13:33Speaker 2: what I was gonna say, is our second string tight
- 13:36Speaker 2: end brock Wright has actually been having an incredible season
- 13:39Speaker 2: and playing he's I think he's been out playing a
- 13:41Speaker 2: lot of the number one tight ends in the league.
- 13:44Speaker 1: Okay, so cool. So you just wanted to hammer down
- 13:46Speaker 1: that you think you have two number one tight ends
- 13:50Speaker 1: on your roster.
- 13:51Speaker 2: In addition to two number one running backs and two
- 13:53Speaker 2: number one receivers. Yes, that's what I did want to
- 13:55Speaker 2: hammer down.
- 13:56Speaker 1: What I am curious about outside of the matchup this
- 13:59Speaker 1: week is for a few years, everyone has understood that
- 14:04Speaker 1: this is a very competitive division. I think a lot
- 14:07Speaker 1: of people thought with your former coordinator going to Chicago,
- 14:10Speaker 1: it could become even more competitive. It seems that has happened.
- 14:14Speaker 1: But I gotta tell you, man, and you're not going
- 14:17Speaker 1: to like this. From an outsider's perspective, the Packers seems
- 14:25Speaker 1: so good at football. I don't raise your eyebrow at
- 14:28Speaker 1: me like that.
- 14:30Speaker 2: I was at that first game. I was at that
- 14:31Speaker 2: game at Lambeau, so I raised my eyebrow because it
- 14:34Speaker 2: was taking me back to a dark place to start
- 14:36Speaker 2: this year.
- 14:37Speaker 1: And I want to tell the fans something because you
- 14:39Speaker 1: come on here so positive and so happy after that
- 14:41Speaker 1: first game at Lambeau. So Mica gets traded you go
- 14:45Speaker 1: to Lambeau for the opening game of the year, you
- 14:48Speaker 1: guys get thaw rottled, and for all the confidence, the
- 14:56Speaker 1: text that you sent me might as well have just
- 14:59Speaker 1: been a picture of like Thelma and Louise's car going
- 15:03Speaker 1: off the cliff. So so you've you've you've obviously recovered
- 15:08Speaker 1: from that. The team is doing very well. But I
- 15:11Speaker 1: got to I mean, I think the Packers. I think
- 15:13Speaker 1: you need to be worried about the Packers. I think,
- 15:15Speaker 1: if i'm if I'm picking with my brain right now,
- 15:19Speaker 1: they are the team even above the Eagles, that seems
- 15:22Speaker 1: most likely.
- 15:23Speaker 2: I well, in regard to the text message I sent
- 15:27Speaker 2: you and the tone that you have conveyed, it reminds
- 15:29Speaker 2: me a lot of the tone that you were giving
- 15:32Speaker 2: me just before we went to break. Okay, that's so
- 15:37Speaker 2: we can commiserate there, I understand, I do. I mean,
- 15:40Speaker 2: I'm not gonna deny that the Packers are good. Josh
- 15:43Speaker 2: Jacobs is incredible. I mean, they're doing it with I mean,
- 15:48Speaker 2: Micah Parsons is their star that and he's the only
- 15:52Speaker 2: one you can really make.
- 15:53Speaker 1: Oh.
- 15:53Speaker 2: I mean, I guess Tucker Craft has been playing very
- 15:55Speaker 2: very well for them, But Outside of that, no one
- 15:58Speaker 2: player has been doing great. I mean Watson and Jayden
- 16:03Speaker 2: Reid have been hurt. Who else, I mean, Matthew Golden
- 16:08Speaker 2: has been underwhelming. So I think that they're good. I'm
- 16:13Speaker 2: not gonna deny that one real quick thing, shout out
- 16:16Speaker 2: to all This is tough for me to say, especially
- 16:18Speaker 2: on this Vikings podcast. Shout out to all those Packers
- 16:21Speaker 2: fans they were I didn't pay for a beer all
- 16:24Speaker 2: I didn't pay for a beer all day. We add
- 16:26Speaker 2: up early, we went to the tailgate.
- 16:29Speaker 1: Bought beer. I don't think that's a reason to shout
- 16:31Speaker 1: out an entire fan base in the way they handle it.
- 16:34Speaker 2: And my car and my car died the next day,
- 16:38Speaker 2: and I'm trying to figure out how to get at
- 16:39Speaker 2: a jump and this woman in a Green Bay Packers
- 16:42Speaker 2: hoodie goes, oh, is your car dead? And I'm in
- 16:45Speaker 2: all Lions gear. My wife is in all Lions gear.
- 16:47Speaker 2: And she's like, oh, is your car dead? And we're like, yeah,
- 16:50Speaker 2: we're about to call someone. She goes, don't you pay
- 16:51Speaker 2: money for that. I will be right back with my
- 16:54Speaker 2: jumper cables. She put her dog inside, came over and said,
- 16:57Speaker 2: don't worry guys, it's just the first game. You'll get
- 16:59Speaker 2: us next time. Yeah, thanks getting question, just thanksgiving.
- 17:03Speaker 1: Here's my question for you on that story that doesn't
- 17:07Speaker 1: move me emotionally in any way, shape or form.
- 17:09Speaker 2: What have you been moved emotionally? Siy huh, I'm looking
- 17:12Speaker 2: at me.
- 17:12Speaker 1: Talk about that. That's not your job is not to
- 17:15Speaker 1: have those discussions with me. My question is, if you
- 17:19Speaker 1: to beat them thirty eight to ten, you think she's
- 17:22Speaker 1: out there jumping your car saving you money. You think
- 17:26Speaker 1: you're getting beers bought all over the place. I think package.
- 17:30Speaker 2: It was pregame. Pregame's not gonna change.
- 17:33Speaker 1: I think the victory shades the behavior. I'm not interested in.
- 17:36Speaker 1: I'm not interested. And this is what I was gonna
- 17:38Speaker 1: ask you, And this I actually think this is this
- 17:40Speaker 1: sucks about you, that stupid curse.
- 17:44Speaker 3: Me personally, Yes, I've that stupid curse made you. You're
- 17:53Speaker 3: basically like a dog that got adopted.
- 17:57Speaker 1: Right. You're in a good home now and for the
- 18:00Speaker 1: first time you're like, Wow, this is great. There's nothing
- 18:04Speaker 1: everything's great like, there's no nothing is negative, nor should
- 18:08Speaker 1: it be. You're finally in a good place you deserve
- 18:11Speaker 1: to be in a good place. But what I don't
- 18:13Speaker 1: understand is you've developed the cockiness, but you haven't developed
- 18:17Speaker 1: any of the disdain. You're over. Here's just on me.
- 18:20Speaker 1: Packer fans are kind you like? Tell me why why
- 18:25Speaker 1: have you yet to disdain any of the other teams?
- 18:29Speaker 1: And I don't want some upper brow I'm a good person. Answer.
- 18:33Speaker 1: That's not how That's not how sports angst works. We'll
- 18:37Speaker 1: see if you lose in another NFC championship game or
- 18:40Speaker 1: second round how you're feeling about other teams. But what why?
- 18:44Speaker 1: You should already be down the road of not you
- 18:48Speaker 1: really want to be in our division. You want to
- 18:50Speaker 1: play like the girl, don't like the Packers, don't like
- 18:53Speaker 1: their fans. What are you talking about?
- 18:55Speaker 2: Let me go ahead and say to your adopted dog analogy. Yeah,
- 19:01Speaker 2: I do have a good home now, and I am
- 19:03Speaker 2: happy with where I am. But you'll I will maintain
- 19:06Speaker 2: you can go back through every appearance I have had
- 19:09Speaker 2: on this podcast. I never forgot the roads that I
- 19:13Speaker 2: grew up on, all right, I never forgot how hard
- 19:16Speaker 2: it was. I'm just happy to be here. I'm wagging
- 19:18Speaker 2: my tail, all right. I wouldn't have liked the Packers
- 19:20Speaker 2: until I don't like the Packers. Let's get that clear.
- 19:23Speaker 2: I do not like the team, the Packers. But the
- 19:26Speaker 2: tailgate experience at Lambeau was fantastic because it was basically
- 19:31Speaker 2: a professional level college football tailgate game, which I have
- 19:35Speaker 2: never been a part of, and that was fantastic. And
- 19:39Speaker 2: for people in their I mean, they did not think
- 19:42Speaker 2: they were gonna win. They were all about like, oh,
- 19:45Speaker 2: the Lions are the team, like this is the team.
- 19:47Speaker 2: This is the team, this is the team. And despite that,
- 19:49Speaker 2: they were like, Okay, here's some beers. And I think
- 19:51Speaker 2: I get that. I get that, like you're trying to
- 19:54Speaker 2: set your expectations low so you don't so you don't
- 19:58Speaker 2: disappoint yourself. And then all all of a sudden you
- 20:00Speaker 2: turned it around and you're like, well, you know, I'm
- 20:02Speaker 2: I'm just a humble fan. That's all it is.
- 20:04Speaker 3: I I don't have a speechless ladies and gentlemen, speechless.
- 20:12Speaker 1: I will agree with you. I think everyone should go
- 20:16Speaker 1: to a game in Lambeau. I think it is an
- 20:19Speaker 1: immensely unique experience. I you know, I've told this story
- 20:25Speaker 1: on the show and on other Viking programs. I was
- 20:27Speaker 1: at the Randy Moss Mooning game one of the great
- 20:31Speaker 1: sports experiences of my life. But I also remember, like
- 20:36Speaker 1: midway through the third quarter when we were beating them
- 20:39Speaker 1: in a playoff game and they still had Brett farre
- 20:42Speaker 1: and we were the underdogs. I remember my nephew Seth
- 20:45Speaker 1: and I thinking we should probably put our jackets on
- 20:48Speaker 1: and tone it down a little bit.
- 20:49Speaker 2: You know, that was not my experience, because we were
- 20:51Speaker 2: getting throttled the whole game.
- 20:53Speaker 1: See that's what I'm saying. I think, and I think
- 20:56Speaker 1: because you're such a puppy dog, You're sitting there getting throwed,
- 21:00Speaker 1: and even though you were worried about the team, I
- 21:01Speaker 1: think you knew you were gonna be okay. So you
- 21:03Speaker 1: just got to glide through this experience. And what I
- 21:06Speaker 1: needed that experience to do for you is galvanize an
- 21:10Speaker 1: amount of disdain that thrusts you into the adversarial relationship
- 21:17Speaker 1: that you're supposed to have with these other teams. Now,
- 21:19Speaker 1: I will say, we've never had that with you, But
- 21:21Speaker 1: I think in this podcast, I'm starting to develop it.
- 21:24Speaker 1: I think this is the first time I'm really really
- 21:28Speaker 1: starting to develop it.
- 21:29Speaker 2: This is the first year where people are like they're
- 21:33Speaker 2: for the longest. For the last two seasons, they were like,
- 21:35Speaker 2: I mean, it's the Lions, let them have this. This
- 21:37Speaker 2: is this year.
- 21:39Speaker 1: This year is very very tired of it.
- 21:41Speaker 2: It's very different, and people are no longer giving us
- 21:44Speaker 2: the leash, so to speak.
- 21:46Speaker 1: You should have won your title two years ago. I
- 21:48Speaker 1: don't need you to be good in the regular season
- 21:50Speaker 1: for five more years. I'm tired of it that, you know.
- 21:53Speaker 1: I think about that a lot with the Chiefs, you know,
- 21:55Speaker 1: watching them, you know, on Monday night. To see an
- 21:58Speaker 1: organization that has had the high level success start to
- 22:01Speaker 1: have the high level success. There's an endearing aspect to it,
- 22:05Speaker 1: but it can only be endearing for so long. My
- 22:08Speaker 1: question is, and this this will fuel me going into
- 22:12Speaker 1: this weekend in our techt threads, do you believe that
- 22:20Speaker 1: this is the year? Like just being a true look
- 22:23Speaker 1: at everything. You see what the Lions are doing, you
- 22:26Speaker 1: know where the Eagles are at over in the other division,
- 22:28Speaker 1: you see what's happening there. Now the Chiefs are real again.
- 22:31Speaker 1: Do you believe this is the year? And I think
- 22:37Speaker 1: my follow up to that is, do you look at
- 22:40Speaker 1: the last two years losses? You know a lot of
- 22:42Speaker 1: injury issues, you know, stuff like to be more happenstance
- 22:48Speaker 1: if you're able to get all the way through the
- 22:49Speaker 1: season team intact. Do you believe it'll be the first
- 22:52Speaker 1: time the Lions get to showcase their real team in
- 22:55Speaker 1: the playoffs. What is your long haul vision right now?
- 22:58Speaker 1: I want it on record for when we talk later
- 23:00Speaker 1: in the season.
- 23:01Speaker 2: All right, Well, to your point of losing players last year, absolutely,
- 23:07Speaker 2: I think we go much further in the playoffs, and
- 23:11Speaker 2: I do believe that we would have made the super
- 23:13Speaker 2: Bowl if we did not lose sixteen starters. And I
- 23:17Speaker 2: know there's only eleven on that side, but okay, you
- 23:18Speaker 2: lose your starter, then the next man up and then
- 23:20Speaker 2: he goes down. I mean, I've in my and I'm
- 23:24Speaker 2: a football fan. I like just obviously the Lions are
- 23:28Speaker 2: my favorite team, but I am a football fan and
- 23:30Speaker 2: I follow the game. I have never seen one side
- 23:32Speaker 2: of the ball decimated like that, like season ending injuries
- 23:37Speaker 2: to first and second string. So I do think things
- 23:39Speaker 2: would have been different last year had we been able
- 23:42Speaker 2: to maintain some health. Now onto this year, I absolutely
- 23:45Speaker 2: think that we are built to go deep into the
- 23:49Speaker 2: playoffs and showcase what kind of team we actually are.
- 23:53Speaker 2: And I would I would I would push to what
- 23:56Speaker 2: we saw against Tampa Bay in that secondary step up
- 24:01Speaker 2: we got you know, we did get the return of
- 24:03Speaker 2: Alee McNeil, but we only had like so, we did
- 24:07Speaker 2: not have a starting corner out there. We did not
- 24:09Speaker 2: have a starting safety out there. We had guys that
- 24:11Speaker 2: were on the practice squad. We had guys that were
- 24:14Speaker 2: just and they were they were locking guys down. They
- 24:16Speaker 2: were locking good receivers down. Uh, they were locking Mecca down,
- 24:21Speaker 2: they were locking Mike Evans down. I mean, Baker Mayfield
- 24:24Speaker 2: only threw for I think two hundred and fifty yards
- 24:27Speaker 2: and in the first half, I think they only had
- 24:29Speaker 2: thirty yards offense. So if we can maintain health and
- 24:33Speaker 2: we continue to play the way that we've been playing
- 24:37Speaker 2: on offense, yeah, I one hundred percent thinks one hundred
- 24:40Speaker 2: percent think we can do it.
- 24:41Speaker 1: I've asked you this question before, and it's just I'm
- 24:43Speaker 1: just checking in on it. It's a little callback to
- 24:47Speaker 1: what we spoke about earlier in the show, but I'm
- 24:49Speaker 1: just checking in on it because I want to keep
- 24:51Speaker 1: getting it on record for as long as it takes,
- 24:54Speaker 1: because it's either going to be a relevant question at
- 24:57Speaker 1: some point or it's going to be a completely irrelevant
- 25:00Speaker 1: wrong question. Will there come a point in time where
- 25:04Speaker 1: the gamble nature of the way your team approaches things
- 25:09Speaker 1: rubs you the wrong way? Is there an amount of
- 25:12Speaker 1: like if you go into the playoffs this year and
- 25:14Speaker 1: the gamble bites you, will you start to wonder like, hey,
- 25:18Speaker 1: maybe we should reel it in or are you still
- 25:21Speaker 1: all in on this identity? I just and I know
- 25:23Speaker 1: the answer. I just want to keep putting you on
- 25:27Speaker 1: record because some someday I am going to put a
- 25:31Speaker 1: montage of your answers together.
- 25:33Speaker 2: We well, you have offered a different context in this question.
- 25:37Speaker 2: What is the scenario where I would be sick of
- 25:41Speaker 2: the Campbell gamble? And that is if it was blatantly
- 25:45Speaker 2: obvious that Dan Campbell was losing his mind and going
- 25:48Speaker 2: for it egregiously on you know from Mark two or
- 25:53Speaker 2: you know, and and over and over and over again.
- 25:55Speaker 2: If there was clear cut evidence that Dan Campbell had
- 26:00Speaker 2: some sort of stroke on the on the sidelines and
- 26:04Speaker 2: was calling ridiculous, then I would be like, Okay, maybe
- 26:06Speaker 2: we need someone. But until that happens, and I don't
- 26:08Speaker 2: think it will because the man is fit as a
- 26:11Speaker 2: fiddle inside and out. That's right, he too has a
- 26:15Speaker 2: big brain. I think that you know, I'm one hundred
- 26:19Speaker 2: percent in on the identity because I think you live
- 26:22Speaker 2: by the sword and you die by the sword. I'm
- 26:23Speaker 2: not gonna be the guy. I'm never gonna be the
- 26:25Speaker 2: guy who's like, yeah, we did it on fourth dollar,
- 26:28Speaker 2: we got there, Oh, we took this chance. On the
- 26:29Speaker 2: other all the trick plays, Oh my god, yeah, and
- 26:32Speaker 2: then it doesn't work, and I'm like, screw this guy.
- 26:34Speaker 2: That is not a fan, that is not someone who
- 26:37Speaker 2: follows the team the way that I follow the team
- 26:41Speaker 2: and the way that I love this team.
- 26:44Speaker 1: You did a great job of answering that question the
- 26:47Speaker 1: way everybody answers every important topic in arguments in our
- 26:53Speaker 1: society currently, which is like, yeah, there's evidence, but let
- 26:57Speaker 1: me tell you what I decide for what.
- 27:05Speaker 2: You don't get to contextualize your question and then recontextualize
- 27:10Speaker 2: my answer. You don't get to do that, my friend.
- 27:12Speaker 2: Are you You're losing your mind if you think that
- 27:15Speaker 2: is going to fly here on the tailgate. It's my
- 27:18Speaker 2: tailgate now. It's my tailgate now, and you're losing your mind.
- 27:22Speaker 1: Of course I'm losing my mind. Of course I am.
- 27:26Speaker 1: I am beyond losing my mind. I started this show
- 27:30Speaker 1: by pitching like. My pitch to you was that this
- 27:34Speaker 1: against one of the best teams league. I've told I'm
- 27:37Speaker 1: the sort of pressure I'm putting on my team that
- 27:40Speaker 1: I have no control over, which is this is a
- 27:42Speaker 1: get right game, going into one of the best team
- 27:45Speaker 1: in the league's buildings when they got healthy and are
- 27:48Speaker 1: coming off a bye. Yeah, Zach, my mind is gone.
- 27:52Speaker 1: But let me tell you something.
- 27:54Speaker 2: As a friend, I want you to know that when
- 27:56Speaker 2: you used the verb I need, I did get a
- 27:59Speaker 2: little concern. I was like, Okay, maybe I should send
- 28:01Speaker 2: him some muffins. Tell do you like poison Berry? I
- 28:04Speaker 2: know you like.
- 28:06Speaker 1: I love Huckleberry, but.
- 28:11Speaker 2: Good nice, nice.
- 28:13Speaker 1: Some good old fashioned bitterroot valley Huckleberry. Your team is
- 28:19Speaker 1: gonna lose.
- 28:19Speaker 2: Oh you like something that's bitter.
- 28:21Speaker 1: My team is gonna get right, and the gamble will
- 28:25Speaker 1: bite you now and again when it's important. Those are
- 28:29Speaker 1: my predictions. What do you think the score is gonna be? Well, okay,
- 28:34Speaker 1: well here's what I'll tell you. We do do the
- 28:36Speaker 1: since Chad came onto the show, we do do the
- 28:39Speaker 1: prediction segment a little bit differently. Okay, you do a
- 28:42Speaker 1: score prediction, then you do a player prediction, and then
- 28:46Speaker 1: you do a personal prediction.
- 28:48Speaker 2: Before I make my prediction, what is McCarthy's status. He's down,
- 28:52Speaker 2: McCarthy's playing.
- 28:53Speaker 1: Okay, McCarthy's that's my understanding. Jay can text me if
- 28:56Speaker 1: I'm wrong, But as of this recording, my understanding is
- 29:00Speaker 1: JJ McCarthy is our quarterback this weekend.
- 29:03Speaker 2: Okay, now go on with your example. I didn't mean
- 29:05Speaker 2: to interrupt.
- 29:05Speaker 1: I just needed to know. I think you've got that
- 29:08Speaker 1: big old brain, Zach. Come on, come on, you you
- 29:13Speaker 1: clearly you clearly understand. How like my personal prediction for
- 29:18Speaker 1: this week, because that's the one you maybe need help with.
- 29:21Speaker 1: Is I predict that I will be the least appropriate
- 29:26Speaker 1: I've ever been in our text thread on Sunday. I
- 29:31Speaker 1: just see that coming. And I wouldn't have had that
- 29:33Speaker 1: prediction before this episode, but I see it coming. Score
- 29:37Speaker 1: player and personal.
- 29:38Speaker 2: Score player and personal. I think that the score is
- 29:46Speaker 2: thirty eight to seventeen.
- 29:49Speaker 1: That is egregious. You're an egregious person.
- 29:52Speaker 2: Thirty eight to seventeen. And I just want to be
- 29:53Speaker 2: clear that it's the Lions that get the thirty eight,
- 29:56Speaker 2: and we understood that, and the the Packers that I'm
- 30:00Speaker 2: sorry the Vikings. I was just thinking about teams I
- 30:05Speaker 2: prefer less than the Lions. I think that we get
- 30:09Speaker 2: the thirty eight and then the Vikings get the seventeen
- 30:12Speaker 2: and the only reason you get that last seven is
- 30:14Speaker 2: it's a garbage time touchdown and we've pulled all our starters.
- 30:16Speaker 1: Who's your player? That was a Greek? Who's your player?
- 30:21Speaker 2: My player this week has gotta be Jamison Williams. He's
- 30:24Speaker 2: been too quiet and he's just too good. I think
- 30:27Speaker 2: he has oh boy, five receptions for eighty plus yards
- 30:33Speaker 2: and one of which is a thirty plus yard touchdown, and.
- 30:38Speaker 1: My immensely specific my what did you want? No, it's great,
- 30:44Speaker 1: it's a good point.
- 30:45Speaker 2: My personal prediction is, as I was telling Jay before
- 30:49Speaker 2: the show, November seventh is my ten year anniversary with
- 30:54Speaker 2: my wife. So on Sunday I will be in Mexico
- 30:58Speaker 2: with my with a with a drinking my hand and
- 31:00Speaker 2: my iPad on the other watching this game, and I think, uh,
- 31:05Speaker 2: I think I'm gonna get a I'm gonna put a
- 31:07Speaker 2: lion like a lion's emblem on my chest, my bare
- 31:10Speaker 2: chest that I've oiled up, and just get a nice
- 31:14Speaker 2: tan tattoo, a sun a farmer's tan tattoo of the
- 31:18Speaker 2: Lion's emblem. And then as soon as we get that,
- 31:21Speaker 2: that's that win. I'm gonna look over at my beautiful
- 31:24Speaker 2: wife and I'm gonna just be like, Babe, we did it.
- 31:28Speaker 2: And then I'm gonna plan a big kiss onre Goes.
- 31:30Speaker 2: It's not ten years in. I go no, the Lions won.
- 31:35Speaker 1: I have started to disdain this show, speaking of the
- 31:39Speaker 1: word disdain that has come up so often throughout the
- 31:42Speaker 1: programs today. I think you're right about the seventeen, but
- 31:48Speaker 1: I think you're gonna score the seventeen will be at
- 31:50Speaker 1: about one hundred and twenty five. I think that.
- 31:55Speaker 2: Twenty five yards. That's probably a good estimate for you. Yeah,
- 31:57Speaker 2: you're probab gonna get about one hundred twenty five yards.
- 31:59Speaker 1: I think all this talk about your secondary I think
- 32:02Speaker 1: JJ's had enough time to rest. I'm gonna buy the hype.
- 32:05Speaker 1: I'm gonna buy the hype. I'm gonna buy. I'm gonna
- 32:07Speaker 1: homer in on a level I haven't because I've got
- 32:09Speaker 1: to match your homer level. So guess what I think.
- 32:13Speaker 1: JJ McCarthy is gonna come in and knock the shoes
- 32:17Speaker 1: and socks off everybody. And those two wide receivers Jet
- 32:20Speaker 1: j J J Jet Jet Jet Jet Jet Jet Jet Jets,
- 32:23Speaker 1: Justin Jefferson and Jordan Patterson, they are gonna eat your
- 32:27Speaker 1: little braggy secondary apart. I think one hundred yards for
- 32:30Speaker 1: each guy. And I'm changing my personal prediction. I am
- 32:36Speaker 1: gonna text your wife and have her send me a tattoo,
- 32:39Speaker 1: a picture of your son tattoo, so I just have
- 32:43Speaker 1: access to that every time, every time I need it.
- 32:49Speaker 1: Moving into the future, despite how this went, I sure
- 32:51Speaker 1: care about you lot hey and real quick you and
- 32:53Speaker 1: I'm gonna do this because it's important to me. But
- 32:57Speaker 1: I don't think it reflects how I feel about the program.
- 33:00Speaker 1: You're a fantastic stand up.
- 33:02Speaker 2: Oh thanks.
- 33:03Speaker 1: You have a brand new special out, sure do. It's
- 33:07Speaker 1: called A Lot to Live For? Correct?
- 33:09Speaker 2: That's it?
- 33:10Speaker 1: Yeah, it's on YouTube. How can people find it? What's
- 33:13Speaker 1: the easiest?
- 33:13Speaker 2: Is it?
- 33:14Speaker 1: Just search your name?
- 33:15Speaker 2: Z A H M A R T I N. I
- 33:17Speaker 2: just searched that and yeah it's been up now it's
- 33:19Speaker 2: gonna be two days ago. I put it up and
- 33:22Speaker 2: it's been doing really really well and the feedbacks when
- 33:24Speaker 2: positive and I'm proud of it.
- 33:27Speaker 1: I'm proud of it as well, and I'm proud of
- 33:30Speaker 1: you for that and nothing in your football world. I
- 33:33Speaker 1: care about you and we will see you. What do
- 33:35Speaker 1: we are? We last game this season?
- 33:36Speaker 2: Second Las last game this season, which would be greatcause
- 33:39Speaker 2: it could be a lot like the game we had
- 33:40Speaker 2: last year.
- 33:42Speaker 1: I know what you're doing and I'm not going to
- 33:44Speaker 1: be a part of it. I'm not going to be
- 33:46Speaker 1: a part of a big thanks Zach for coming on
- 33:49Speaker 1: the show. We appreciate it, and thank you to all
- 33:51Speaker 1: you guys for listening to our podcast feed while you're here.
- 33:54Speaker 1: Give a review. Do the stars write the words? It
- 33:58Speaker 1: helps us a lot. Finally, a huge shout out to Ticketmaster,
- 34:01Speaker 1: the official ticket marketplace of the Minnesota Vikings, for helping
- 34:05Speaker 1: this show happened. We will be back next week with
- 34:09Speaker 1: both Chad and I. Enjoy the game, Everybody
