- 2:45Speaker 3: steels Nation Radio among many other outlets. We are delighted
- 2:49Speaker 3: to welcome Max Starks into the Irish Titers podcast this week.
- 2:54Speaker 3: Absolutely delighted that we joined here. Bye we all know
- 2:57Speaker 3: now Max Starks. Max, thank you very much going on
- 3:00Speaker 3: the podcast. You're a busy mom in this off season
- 3:02Speaker 3: that has the off season been treating you almi.
- 3:04Speaker 4: Mon, but the off season has been great.
- 3:06Speaker 5: I mean, you know, the NFL, the great thing about
- 3:08Speaker 5: it is they don't really have off seasons, so when
- 3:12Speaker 5: I can carve out my.
- 3:13Speaker 4: Pockets, I'm very excited.
- 3:15Speaker 5: But you know, Combine, I went to Combine, just left
- 3:18Speaker 5: owners meetings a week ago, and of course the draft
- 3:21Speaker 5: coming up in two weeks. So I mean a lot
- 3:23Speaker 5: of excitement in the NFL surrounding. You know this time
- 3:26Speaker 5: of year.
- 3:28Speaker 3: We had a chance to briefly shots. It was great
- 3:30Speaker 3: to see you in New Orleans for the Super Bowl.
- 3:32Speaker 3: But then also on the day at South it was released.
- 3:34Speaker 3: I think you guys were back over at home at
- 3:36Speaker 3: that point and just to talk about it, Nile on
- 3:39Speaker 3: the podcast one to one, how excited there you on?
- 3:42Speaker 3: How I could is at to see the theaters, you know,
- 3:44Speaker 3: finally play this regular season game and Harden this year.
- 3:48Speaker 4: I mean, it's a long time coming.
- 3:50Speaker 5: I mean one of the things I think that I
- 3:51Speaker 5: think more important is DMR right. I mean, Dan Rooney
- 3:56Speaker 5: pushed for this, wanted this for so long, his tireless
- 4:00Speaker 5: efforts to get this game back to back to back
- 4:04Speaker 5: to the homeland for the Rooney family. You know, it
- 4:08Speaker 5: was instilled in all of us as players like we
- 4:10Speaker 5: took that pride that the Rooneys had for Ireland, for
- 4:14Speaker 5: Irish culture and for the deep connection of Ireland with
- 4:18Speaker 5: the Steelers and plays on their traditions and how they
- 4:22Speaker 5: are as an organization. So it's a very it's a
- 4:25Speaker 5: very happy moment, very you know, momentous occasion. Cannot wait
- 4:28Speaker 5: for it. It can't come fast enough. Man, you just
- 4:30Speaker 5: you just got butterflies.
- 4:32Speaker 4: I know.
- 4:32Speaker 3: We're hoping to hear that hopefully a few weeks after
- 4:35Speaker 3: the draft, according to NFL UK and Ireland GM Henry
- 4:38Speaker 3: Hodgson looking forward to hearing not and if you want
- 4:40Speaker 3: to hear his podcast, you can go back, folks a
- 4:41Speaker 3: few weeks on.
- 4:42Speaker 2: Listen to that.
- 4:43Speaker 3: Max just just on this day and if we look
- 4:47Speaker 3: ahead to the draft very quickly. The Steelers actually came
- 4:49Speaker 3: out on Tuesday for the Irish market on announce for
- 4:52Speaker 3: the first time ever, they're going to have a draft
- 4:54Speaker 3: party there on the Saturday of Draft weekend in Crow
- 4:57Speaker 3: Park where the game is going to be. I believe
- 4:59Speaker 3: for people this that is the first ever official NFL
- 5:02Speaker 3: draft party on the island of Ireland, which is really cool.
- 5:05Speaker 3: And I was talking a little bit to Mat Williamson
- 5:07Speaker 3: last week. But you guys have a real party in
- 5:09Speaker 3: Pittsburgh as well. I know the draft is going to
- 5:11Speaker 3: be in Pittsburgh next year, but it's really going up
- 5:13Speaker 3: on option now in this say new season prep with
- 5:16Speaker 3: with the draft coming up.
- 5:18Speaker 5: Yeah, no, I think that this is that kind of
- 5:20Speaker 5: you're trying to premeditate, right of what to expect. Would
- 5:23Speaker 5: you actually get the draft in your city and people
- 5:25Speaker 5: invade Pittsburgh, so to speak, for three days to cheer
- 5:29Speaker 5: for their teams, which will be a little bit different,
- 5:32Speaker 5: right because we're used to dominating, you know, on game
- 5:35Speaker 5: days when the when an opponent comes, but you got
- 5:38Speaker 5: thirty one other opponents, you can't you can't hold the line,
- 5:41Speaker 5: you know, against thirty one other teams coming there to celebrate.
- 5:44Speaker 5: So I think it's kind of a warm up for
- 5:45Speaker 5: the city to get ready for, you know, the chaos
- 5:48Speaker 5: that is draft. I'll be in Green Bay calling the draft,
- 5:52Speaker 5: so I'll get a little warm up taste of how
- 5:54Speaker 5: it is in a smaller city being able to call
- 5:56Speaker 5: that draft.
- 5:57Speaker 4: But I can't wait for the city of Pittsburgh. It's
- 5:59Speaker 4: gonna it's gonna be a lot of fun.
- 6:01Speaker 3: It's gonna be special. It was walking along there Christmas.
- 6:03Speaker 3: Just imagine what the streets are going to be like
- 6:04Speaker 3: on the wed AKERA. Sure, I'll see you in Green
- 6:07Speaker 3: Band in a couple of weeks potentially as well to
- 6:08Speaker 3: say hello, big few weeks. You know, if we go
- 6:11Speaker 3: back to the combine, just just for a second, because
- 6:13Speaker 3: you were there and I was there as well. You
- 6:16Speaker 3: guys are a pretty good location in media room there
- 6:18Speaker 3: and you can see the players coming in, players coming out.
- 6:21Speaker 3: Was there anybody Macks even during the week that you
- 6:23Speaker 3: were there, and it's still out to you, even for
- 6:25Speaker 3: the team or any player that you fall to yourself,
- 6:27Speaker 3: like God, I'd love to have them on our roster
- 6:29Speaker 3: going forward the season.
- 6:31Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 6:31Speaker 5: No, there's about six defensive linemen. There's a four running back.
- 6:35Speaker 5: I have a shopping list, Mike. I mean we could,
- 6:37Speaker 5: we should be here for a while. But I mean,
- 6:40Speaker 5: you know, looking at a Kenneth Grant, looking at him,
- 6:42Speaker 5: you know, a Mason Graham, which I think will be
- 6:43Speaker 5: a little bit tough for Walter Nolan. You know, I'm
- 6:46Speaker 5: thinking heavy defensive lineman is priority number one for Since
- 6:50Speaker 5: we don't have a second round pick, we can't really
- 6:52Speaker 5: play with who's number one, who's number two. It's we
- 6:56Speaker 5: got to hit this right in day one because we're
- 6:58Speaker 5: not gonna be picking again until the of day two
- 7:01Speaker 5: in the third round, so you want to make sure
- 7:03Speaker 5: that that guy's an immediate contributor to the team. I
- 7:06Speaker 5: think all signs point to it being defensive line, just
- 7:09Speaker 5: because of what the decisions have been made during the
- 7:11Speaker 5: off season as far as free agency, the acquisitions we've made.
- 7:14Speaker 5: We've picked up a running back, We've picked up you know, linebackers,
- 7:17Speaker 5: we've picked up corners, and we've picked up all these
- 7:20Speaker 5: other positions. We went and got a blockbuster deal for
- 7:23Speaker 5: a wide receiver. So the one piece that's missing is
- 7:25Speaker 5: that start defensive lineman to sit behind and learn behind
- 7:29Speaker 5: Cam Hayward and also give some more rotation in the
- 7:32Speaker 5: interior so it's not such a significant drop off when
- 7:34Speaker 5: he gets out of the game. So a dynamic D
- 7:36Speaker 5: line is what I expect first, and then I think
- 7:39Speaker 5: third round will be whoever falls to you, whether it's
- 7:41Speaker 5: a second D lineman, whether it's a running back, think
- 7:44Speaker 5: Kim Scataboo, maybe Trevion Henderson or somebody in that third round,
- 7:48Speaker 5: or you know, if there's an if there's a quarterback
- 7:51Speaker 5: that we like to come in and fill out that
- 7:53Speaker 5: quarterback room, that could be another one. So I'm looking
- 7:56Speaker 5: at that kind of being the first two days, and
- 7:58Speaker 5: then day three is going to be you know, who's
- 8:00Speaker 5: the best who's the best guy once once it falls
- 8:03Speaker 5: to us, because there's always gonna be guys that fall
- 8:05Speaker 5: that we had great at hire that don't necessarily get picked,
- 8:08Speaker 5: they didn't get great to hire by the other teams,
- 8:09Speaker 5: and they fall in your lap like a Darnell Washington
- 8:12Speaker 5: a couple of years ago at the tight end position.
- 8:14Speaker 4: Nobody expects them to be in the nineties.
- 8:16Speaker 5: So I think that's what you're kind of looking at
- 8:18Speaker 5: for those first two days.
- 8:21Speaker 3: For especially for Irish funds, for international funds, list the MUCKs.
- 8:24Speaker 3: What was it like getting drafted? But was it like
- 8:26Speaker 3: getting drafted in the third round on knowing that you're
- 8:29Speaker 3: going to Pittsburgh as well? What's that feeling?
- 8:30Speaker 4: One?
- 8:32Speaker 5: Well, you know, the best part is is that you know,
- 8:34Speaker 5: I get the distinct honor and pleasure of saying I
- 8:36Speaker 5: was drafted.
- 8:37Speaker 4: I was a Day one draft pick.
- 8:38Speaker 5: Because the young kids don't know that they're they don't
- 8:40Speaker 5: understand that back when I got drafted, like the first
- 8:42Speaker 5: three rounds were the first day and then the second
- 8:44Speaker 5: round was everybody else, uh expanded.
- 8:47Speaker 4: To three days, So I mean, it was, it was.
- 8:50Speaker 4: It was really special because I had no clue.
- 8:52Speaker 5: You know, I didn't do interviews in a lot of
- 8:54Speaker 5: meetings with with Pittsburgh. I met with a bunch of
- 8:58Speaker 5: other teams. I did not because it was not even
- 9:00Speaker 5: on my radar. So it was really cool to kind
- 9:03Speaker 5: of see that and get that experience and be on
- 9:06Speaker 5: the phone with it. Funny then contract negotiator Omar Khan,
- 9:09Speaker 5: not general manager Omar Khan, that had me hold wait
- 9:13Speaker 5: for coach Kauer and then I talked to coach Kawer.
- 9:15Speaker 5: So it was a really special moment back in two
- 9:17Speaker 5: thousand and four, and you know, I'm just happy for
- 9:19Speaker 5: these young men and getting that opportunity coming up in
- 9:22Speaker 5: a couple of weeks.
- 9:23Speaker 3: You missed the London game by a season. I was
- 9:26Speaker 3: talking to Rod Woodson, who missed the ninety seven preseason
- 9:30Speaker 3: game in Crok Park there a few weeks ago, by
- 9:32Speaker 3: I think six months. You must be interesting to see
- 9:34Speaker 3: this team playing at an Ashley game because as well
- 9:36Speaker 3: Marks it's been so long, it hasn't They haven't played
- 9:39Speaker 3: at Ashley since twenty thirteen as well.
- 9:41Speaker 5: Yeah, no, it was one of the things that was
- 9:43Speaker 5: probably one of my biggest like like NFL regrets, is
- 9:47Speaker 5: that I never got to play on Thanksgiving and I
- 9:48Speaker 5: never got to play internationally.
- 9:50Speaker 4: They did both of those.
- 9:50Speaker 5: Things in the follow up season after after nine years
- 9:54Speaker 5: in Pittsburgh. It happened on the tenth year and I
- 9:58Speaker 5: was at Saint Louis ram at that time, and I was,
- 10:00Speaker 5: I was mad, I was I was a bit perturbed,
- 10:03Speaker 5: I think, is the best way of putting it. But
- 10:06Speaker 5: I'm so excited that my first international exposure with the
- 10:09Speaker 5: NFL is going to be with the Steelers, and of
- 10:11Speaker 5: course in Ireland.
- 10:11Speaker 4: I mean, it's where it was worth the wait to
- 10:14Speaker 4: have this opportunity.
- 10:15Speaker 3: It's gonna be in me as the mind. I don't
- 10:17Speaker 3: want to get emotional, so I'll move away spiffing from
- 10:19Speaker 3: the topic. You sort of talk there, and especially for
- 10:21Speaker 3: people listening nice side of the US. Yes, we haven't
- 10:24Speaker 3: had a game in a couple of months now, three
- 10:25Speaker 3: months now, but this season is just going to the
- 10:28Speaker 3: point now where there's something every over week. You mentioned
- 10:30Speaker 3: about the league meetings. We've seen coach Tomlin talk at
- 10:33Speaker 3: the league meetings there dined in Florida last week. What
- 10:36Speaker 3: sort of vibe that you get from the league it south,
- 10:38Speaker 3: and you know, more so from coach Tomlin as we
- 10:40Speaker 3: get into that such an important few weeks.
- 10:42Speaker 5: Now, well, I think I think you see the focus, right,
- 10:45Speaker 5: I mean, it's it's not as happy, go lucky, it's
- 10:48Speaker 5: not as retrospective, right that everything is pointing forward, you know,
- 10:52Speaker 5: looking to next season. How do I build this roster
- 10:55Speaker 5: to go be competitive next year? And you know, I
- 10:58Speaker 5: think the intent of everybody there, everybody is now looking like, okay,
- 11:02Speaker 5: you know who the champion is, right, the new King
- 11:04Speaker 5: of the Hill is Philadelphia. So how do you prepare
- 11:07Speaker 5: and situate your team for that type of success and
- 11:10Speaker 5: to combat that champion? So, I mean, you know, a
- 11:13Speaker 5: lot of the rules that came out and got changed. Obviously,
- 11:15Speaker 5: the Tush push got tabled because there's just there's too
- 11:18Speaker 5: many variables and not enough time and at the owner's
- 11:21Speaker 5: meeting it's just a vote, so they cabled that one.
- 11:25Speaker 5: I think you know, the Steelers, you know, wanting to
- 11:28Speaker 5: change some of the time out rulings and uh, and
- 11:30Speaker 5: some of the replay assist stuff that went through, which
- 11:33Speaker 5: was nice to hear and kind of mister Rooney kind
- 11:35Speaker 5: of talked about on Steelers dot Com. He went he
- 11:37Speaker 5: went through the process on the voting. We caught him
- 11:39Speaker 5: right after the voting was over with. And then for
- 11:41Speaker 5: coach Tomlin, you know, it's it's a focus on getting
- 11:44Speaker 5: back to it, you know, not looking backwards. Made progress,
- 11:48Speaker 5: but you got to retool once again. Right A brand
- 11:50Speaker 5: new quarterback room is going to come in there. Obviously
- 11:52Speaker 5: it was one of you know, one normal name, but uh,
- 11:56Speaker 5: but it's going to be a tough one.
- 11:58Speaker 3: It's going to be interesting to see what happens. A
- 12:00Speaker 3: big movement obviously, and this off season's being dk Matcoff
- 12:03Speaker 3: coming in. Are you on the bond wagon if you'd
- 12:05Speaker 3: like to see a third wide receiver come in in
- 12:07Speaker 3: the draft or even in free agency or in free pickups,
- 12:10Speaker 3: off to that or you very much? You know, let's
- 12:12Speaker 3: just wait and see what happened.
- 12:15Speaker 5: I'm a wait and see guy, because I think you know,
- 12:16Speaker 5: we wanted to find that number one slash too right
- 12:19Speaker 5: to go opposite George Pickens.
- 12:21Speaker 4: And then we still don't know what we have with
- 12:22Speaker 4: Roman Wilson and Calvin.
- 12:24Speaker 5: Austin has been a welcome, pleasant addition, and I'm looking
- 12:26Speaker 5: forward to seeing his role expanded as well.
- 12:29Speaker 4: So wide receivers not as.
- 12:30Speaker 5: Big of a priority because of the fact that I
- 12:33Speaker 5: consider we drafted a second round wide receiver, you know,
- 12:37Speaker 5: in DK Metcalf, so I would say I'd rather turn
- 12:40Speaker 5: those attentions towards the defensive line, bolstering the offensive line depth,
- 12:44Speaker 5: or you know, quality running back.
- 12:46Speaker 4: Those are really the three big things because you think.
- 12:47Speaker 5: About the losses that we had in the off season,
- 12:50Speaker 5: we're two not only the quarterback room will obviously hear
- 12:53Speaker 5: what that is, but the offensive and defensive line. Like
- 12:56Speaker 5: reinforcing the trends. I think that's what Philadelphia really taught
- 12:58Speaker 5: a lot of teams is you need to pay attention
- 12:59Speaker 5: to your lines and the depth there so you have
- 13:02Speaker 5: quality guys that are able to play.
- 13:04Speaker 3: We've seen Coreil Patterson stay on the books a two
- 13:07Speaker 3: year deal. Obviously going to be interesting to see what
- 13:09Speaker 3: hopps opposition. Are you hoppy that we've kept him in
- 13:12Speaker 3: the building, or would you like to see us make
- 13:13Speaker 3: different moves as well?
- 13:15Speaker 5: No, I'm happy we kept him because I think we
- 13:16Speaker 5: really didn't figure out what he was capable of, and
- 13:19Speaker 5: Arthur Smith obviously knows what he's capable of. I think
- 13:22Speaker 5: year two in this offense, you'll see an expanded role
- 13:24Speaker 5: for him. I think you were trying to appease too
- 13:26Speaker 5: many things with existing guys, and it was year one
- 13:29Speaker 5: for Arthur Smith. So I think this year you'll see
- 13:31Speaker 5: a different deployment. I think we'll see him line up
- 13:33Speaker 5: more wide receiver and shift into the backfield. He won't
- 13:36Speaker 5: just be a running back on special situations, so I
- 13:39Speaker 5: expect to expand it role for him, and I think
- 13:41Speaker 5: that also creates another opportunity where we don't need to
- 13:43Speaker 5: go to wide receiver.
- 13:45Speaker 3: It's a big weekend or a big week for this
- 13:47Speaker 3: theaters in Green Band a couple of weeks time. It's
- 13:49Speaker 3: going to be special. It's a real one off, the
- 13:51Speaker 3: first ever time the drops is being in Green Bay
- 13:55Speaker 3: run Lumbolefield. How excited that you, Fred genleymun.
- 13:58Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm excited to see it. I mean, you know,
- 14:00Speaker 5: it's it's one of those things. You know, you hear
- 14:02Speaker 5: the history. You know, you think of Vince Lombardi, you
- 14:04Speaker 5: think of Curly Lambeau and the history of the Green
- 14:07Speaker 5: Bay Pack, especially early on in the NFL's history. So
- 14:10Speaker 5: you know, getting to go to that hallowed ground, so
- 14:12Speaker 5: to speak. You know, I've been there a number of
- 14:14Speaker 5: times calling games, but it's gonna be interesting to see
- 14:16Speaker 5: how they do it, how they manage it, because I
- 14:18Speaker 5: think it'll be a blueprint for Pittsburgh, who has a
- 14:20Speaker 5: similar smaller town feel to it, and how they manage
- 14:26Speaker 5: the flow of people, because you know, Green Bay.
- 14:28Speaker 4: I don't know if you've been there, Michael, it was
- 14:29Speaker 4: one way in, one way out. You know, it's kind
- 14:31Speaker 4: of one of those type of places.
- 14:32Speaker 5: There's not a lot of hotels there and it's a
- 14:36Speaker 5: very open, farmland type of area.
