Latest / Hurdle with Emily Abbate / 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: When The Pain Of Staying The Same Is Too Great
Transcript
- 0:18Speaker 1: Okay, hey, Emily Abaudi here you are listening to five
- 0:22Speaker 1: Minute Friday from Hurdle. I am thinking this week a
- 0:27Speaker 1: lot about this concept that oftentimes people don't change until
- 0:34Speaker 1: not changing is the less comfortable option. I'll say that
- 0:38Speaker 1: one more time, people don't change until not changing is
- 0:44Speaker 1: the less comfortable option. I've experienced this many a time
- 0:49Speaker 1: in my day. The most prominent example of this for
- 0:53Speaker 1: me was when I finally made the conscious choice that
- 0:57Speaker 1: I wanted to lose weight back in college. Of note,
- 1:02Speaker 1: this is something I talk about in detail in episode
- 1:04Speaker 1: one of the show, so definitely go check that out.
- 1:08Speaker 1: At the time, I weighed over two hundred pounds and
- 1:13Speaker 1: was not healthy in that body. In my body at
- 1:16Speaker 1: the time, I felt wildly uncomfortable in my own skin.
- 1:21Speaker 1: My mental health was all out of whack, and I
- 1:25Speaker 1: knew that I needed to make a change because I
- 1:29Speaker 1: didn't want to feel so stuck anymore. I didn't want
- 1:33Speaker 1: to feel othered. I didn't want to feel like I
- 1:37Speaker 1: wasn't at home in my own body. I was constantly
- 1:40Speaker 1: tired and uncomfortable, and I knew that that was no
- 1:45Speaker 1: way to live. And so because staying the same felt
- 1:50Speaker 1: more difficult than making a change, despite that change feeling
- 1:57Speaker 1: extremely overwhelming and requiring a lot of me. I made
- 2:02Speaker 1: it now. There's usually a really long period of time
- 2:07Speaker 1: of let's call it increasing discomfort before not changing is
- 2:12Speaker 1: the worst case scenario, and that discomfort is largely impacted
- 2:17Speaker 1: because you me, we aren't acknowledging what is right in
- 2:22Speaker 1: front of us. We're not being honest with ourselves. I
- 2:26Speaker 1: know you're probably thinking, Emily, why are you thinking about
- 2:28Speaker 1: this now? Why are you telling us? Well? I have
- 2:30Speaker 1: a dear friend whose foot is really bothering her right now,
- 2:35Speaker 1: and it's been super tight for let's say, the better
- 2:37Speaker 1: part of two weeks. She has a goal at the
- 2:41Speaker 1: beginning of June to run a have marathon and wants
- 2:46Speaker 1: to live this blissfully ignorant life of if I just
- 2:50Speaker 1: pretend it's not bothering me and suck it up, I
- 2:53Speaker 1: can still get to my goal. And I asked her
- 2:55Speaker 1: when I saw her yesterday, I said, what's your ultimate goal?
- 2:59Speaker 1: She answered, my goal is to run the half marathon.
- 3:02Speaker 1: What if I told you? I asked her that by
- 3:06Speaker 1: not recognizing what you're experiencing in this moment right now,
- 3:10Speaker 1: you may not be able to get to your goal.
- 3:13Speaker 1: And she said, well, what do you mean? And I said,
- 3:16Speaker 1: by confronting this pain as it stands right now, perhaps
- 3:19Speaker 1: going to a physical therapist or going to get some
- 3:22Speaker 1: imaging done, you can get clarification or a better understanding
- 3:26Speaker 1: of what might be causing you this pain and deal
- 3:29Speaker 1: with it before it becomes a bigger issue. It's scary
- 3:34Speaker 1: to deal with the pain, the hurt, the hard I
- 3:37Speaker 1: get it. I understand why we don't want to try
- 3:42Speaker 1: something new right deal with the pain that you know.
- 3:46Speaker 1: But at the end of the day, we are better
- 3:49Speaker 1: than waiting for that dull whisper to become a loud roar.
- 3:54Speaker 1: It takes trial and error. I know this now because
- 3:59Speaker 1: of what I've gone on through in my past. The
- 4:02Speaker 1: hurdles that challenge us, they happen for us. And so
- 4:06Speaker 1: I encourage you right now to do a gut check,
- 4:10Speaker 1: do a pulse check. What is whispering to you right now?
- 4:16Speaker 1: What are you consciously allowing to work its way up
- 4:23Speaker 1: to a roar? And what can you do to combat that?
- 4:28Speaker 1: To have grace with yourself, to truly listen and give
- 4:32Speaker 1: yourself exactly what you need. And now a listener question, Hey,
- 4:38Speaker 1: Emily love the show. I have a goal this year
- 4:42Speaker 1: of incorporating more strength training into my routine, but I
- 4:45Speaker 1: feel like there just isn't enough time. How do you
- 4:48Speaker 1: incorporate strength training and do a busy schedule without feeling
- 4:52Speaker 1: overwhelmed or even worse, perhaps risking injury. This is a
- 4:58Speaker 1: good question, so nothing changes if nothing changes, and right now,
- 5:03Speaker 1: maybe you have an existing routine that doesn't incorporate this
- 5:07Speaker 1: modality into the mix. So I encourage everyone who's trying
- 5:12Speaker 1: to get consistent with their workouts to plan them like
- 5:15Speaker 1: you would an important meeting. So right now, you don't
- 5:19Speaker 1: want to overdo it by tossing in too much strength
- 5:23Speaker 1: into the mix from the get go. Look at your
- 5:25Speaker 1: calendar and meet yourself with where you're at. By starting
- 5:29Speaker 1: with perhaps two to three times per week for no
- 5:33Speaker 1: more than twenty minutes, you don't need to spend hours
- 5:37Speaker 1: and hours and hours doing something. In fact, if you
- 5:40Speaker 1: try that, I hate to say this, I almost guarantee
- 5:43Speaker 1: that you will fail. So if incorporating strength training regularly
- 5:49Speaker 1: is a goal that you have, again, meet yourself with
- 5:52Speaker 1: where you're at and slot in these twenty maybe even
- 5:56Speaker 1: fifteen minute strength training sessions into your regular schedule. I'm
- 6:02Speaker 1: not going to go into specifics, talk exercises, et cetera.
- 6:06Speaker 1: Will be here forever if I do that. But a
- 6:09Speaker 1: few quick tips for anyone that's interested in adopting this
- 6:13Speaker 1: regular strength routine. Beyond meeting yourself with where you're at
- 6:17Speaker 1: and starting small, you want to make sure that you're
- 6:19Speaker 1: listening to your body, so start with lighter weights or
- 6:22Speaker 1: fewer sets. You want to make sure that you're getting
- 6:24Speaker 1: down the form first, so that you are strength training
- 6:28Speaker 1: both safely and effectively. Another tip, track your progress. That
- 6:32Speaker 1: will be very motivating as you go along your journey,
- 6:35Speaker 1: whether you're doing it in your notes app, in a notebook,
- 6:38Speaker 1: or using a specific app. I myself trained using the
- 6:42Speaker 1: Future app and I will link that in the show notes.
- 6:46Speaker 1: And then, lastly, stay consistent, listen, showing up even on
- 6:50Speaker 1: the tough days. It's not easy, but I promise you
- 6:54Speaker 1: Consistency over perfection. I will say that one more time.
- 6:58Speaker 1: Consistency over perfection. Meet yourself with where you're at. Consistency
- 7:04Speaker 1: over perfection, track your progress, Listen to your body, compound movements. Okay,
- 7:09Speaker 1: these are the beginner essentials for incorporating strength into your
- 7:14Speaker 1: regular routine. I know this is a topic that many
- 7:17Speaker 1: of you are super interested in, so hit me with
- 7:20Speaker 1: whatever other questions that you have over in the email.
