- 0:07Speaker 1: The Season with Peter Schrager is a production of the
- 0:09Speaker 1: NFL in partnership with iHeartRadio. What's up, Everybody, This is
- 0:24Speaker 1: Peter Schreger. This is the Season with Peter Schrager. We
- 0:27Speaker 1: were entering Week seven of the NFL season, and I
- 0:31Speaker 1: gotta tell you, Aaron, this was the most surprising of
- 0:34Speaker 1: weeks we've had this year. But it's just it's true
- 0:37Speaker 1: to form. This is the NFL any given Sunday. But
- 0:39Speaker 1: you saw the forty nine ers, who were unbeatable and
- 0:42Speaker 1: averaging a margin of victory of twenty points, lose in
- 0:46Speaker 1: Cleveland to a backup quarterback without Nick Chubb and without
- 0:49Speaker 1: Joel Patonio. You saw Jalen Hurts strut into met Life,
- 0:53Speaker 1: take an early lead and then throw three uncharacteristic interceptions
- 0:56Speaker 1: and lose to the Jets. And then you saw the
- 0:59Speaker 1: Detroit Lions go into Tampa, a team that everyone was
- 1:03Speaker 1: high on, and just absolutely whooped them and beat them
- 1:05Speaker 1: twenty to with Aman Rossing Brown having a career day
- 1:09Speaker 1: and those creamsicle uniforms just being splattered across that home field.
- 1:15Speaker 1: Fun fun week to get some unexpected results. We go
- 1:18Speaker 1: on to Week seven, but I wanted to start the
- 1:21Speaker 1: pod this week with a personal note, Aaron, are you
- 1:25Speaker 1: ready for me to reveal why I was away for
- 1:28Speaker 1: a couple of days in late August filming something in
- 1:32Speaker 1: Los Angeles.
- 1:33Speaker 2: Yeah, we had to pay this off. This has been
- 1:35Speaker 2: a long time coming. This is a secret and we're
- 1:38Speaker 2: now getting the reveal.
- 1:40Speaker 1: So I get a call around August fifteenth from a
- 1:47Speaker 1: production company saying, is there any way you can get
- 1:52Speaker 1: off of Good Morning Football a week from now on
- 1:55Speaker 1: the Monday, last week of August, to which I said,
- 2:01Speaker 1: I'd need to know what the opportunity is. The answers
- 2:04Speaker 1: probably No Morning Football does really good ratings in August,
- 2:08Speaker 1: and the NFL network puts a lot of eggs in
- 2:10Speaker 1: the August basket because we're the only ones to show
- 2:13Speaker 1: all the preseason games. Ratings are high. So if it's
- 2:16Speaker 1: to you know, do a spot on a reality show
- 2:21Speaker 1: or gosh, if Gordon Ramsey wanted me to be a
- 2:24Speaker 1: guest judge on Kitchen Nightmares, the entest probably know. But
- 2:28Speaker 1: this one was special. The production company was representing a
- 2:33Speaker 1: certain show called Jeopardy. Aaron, no response. I'm waiting for nothing.
- 2:42Speaker 2: I'm waiting.
- 2:44Speaker 1: Details.
- 2:44Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, okay, So they represent Jeopardy, and there.
- 2:48Speaker 1: Was a writers strike going on, and there was an
- 2:51Speaker 1: actor strike going on. I think the term Celebrity Jeopardy
- 2:56Speaker 1: was being tossed around very loosely at this time in
- 2:58Speaker 1: Hollywood's They asked me if I wanted to come on
- 3:02Speaker 1: Celebrity Jeopardy and compete as a contestant on Celebrity Jeopardy.
- 3:08Speaker 1: Aaron my lovely producer and friend. We've known each other
- 3:11Speaker 1: now about a year, maybe a little bit more than
- 3:13Speaker 1: a year. I grew up a Jeopardy kid.
- 3:16Speaker 2: That makes total sense to me. No, no, you Your
- 3:21Speaker 2: ability to recall facts and numbers and names is uncanny,
- 3:26Speaker 2: and this feels like exactly the kind of thing that
- 3:30Speaker 2: you like. I don't know if you did trivial pursuit
- 3:33Speaker 2: as a kid, but I have a feeling like you
- 3:35Speaker 2: were in this from the beginning, and Jeopardy is like
- 3:38Speaker 2: one hundred percent makes sense.
- 3:39Speaker 3: I get it.
- 3:40Speaker 1: There was a TV in my kitchen as a kid,
- 3:44Speaker 1: and we would sit down for dinner at seven pm
- 3:48Speaker 1: every night in Freehold, New Jersey. The TV was about
- 3:50Speaker 1: the size of your laptop, and we'd sit at a table.
- 3:54Speaker 1: There'd be a little counter and then the TV was
- 3:57Speaker 1: on and my family family four. Wasn't much discussion about
- 4:01Speaker 1: our feelings. Wasn't much discussion about how our vulnerabilities are
- 4:06Speaker 1: and our failures and our strengths. It was more just
- 4:09Speaker 1: be quiet, let's listen to Drabek and then if dinner
- 4:12Speaker 1: goes on long enough, we might get a little wheel also.
- 4:14Speaker 1: I mean that's basically what it was. Every night, seven pm,
- 4:18Speaker 1: Trebec Jeopardy Old school, and then my brother and I
- 4:23Speaker 1: would would retire from the kitchen and we would go retire.
- 4:26Speaker 1: We'd go to something called the computer room, which kids
- 4:28Speaker 1: these days don't even know what that is, but it
- 4:30Speaker 1: was the room where there was a computer. And we
- 4:32Speaker 1: had a Commodore sixty four and eventually I think in
- 4:36Speaker 1: Apple pe or was Apple two? E? Is that what
- 4:39Speaker 1: it was? I have? Yeah, I'm sorry, east ms Okay.
- 4:43Speaker 1: The Commodore sixty four was an old computer. Then we
- 4:45Speaker 1: graduated to the Apple two, and then eventually we got
- 4:48Speaker 1: a Dell and if you know what Dell is, it
- 4:50Speaker 1: was like I got a Dell dude, like the Dell guy,
- 4:52Speaker 1: and we would play Jeopardy on the computer. Like I
- 4:55Speaker 1: didn't play Mario. I didn't play Tetris. We played Jeopardy
- 4:59Speaker 1: and it was like a pixelated version of Jeopardy on
- 5:01Speaker 1: a floppy disc and it was all sorts of characters.
- 5:04Speaker 1: And then they would eventually come out with Sports jepard
- 5:07Speaker 1: and I would play Sports Jeopardy. So when I get
- 5:10Speaker 1: the call to compete on Jeopardy, not only do I
- 5:14Speaker 1: not ask my employers out of the gates, I just
- 5:16Speaker 1: say yes. And I'm like, well, who wants the book
- 5:17Speaker 1: to flight? Like I'm going I'll lose my job, Like
- 5:19Speaker 1: I don't, I'm going like I'm doing this. Fortunately I
- 5:22Speaker 1: did ask our employers. They were cool enough to let
- 5:25Speaker 1: me miss a show. I think I got that vacation
- 5:27Speaker 1: day docked on the back end, But that's another conversation.
- 5:30Speaker 1: We'll talk about that at some other date. That said
- 5:33Speaker 1: I was in but I was told I couldn't say
- 5:35Speaker 1: a word. So here I am, and there's so many
- 5:38Speaker 1: things I have to go through, but I with no
- 5:41Speaker 1: further do. I will tell you the air date when
- 5:44Speaker 1: it is airing is next Wednesday, October twenty fifth, my
- 5:51Speaker 1: episode of Celebrity Jeopardy where I am a contestant, and
- 5:56Speaker 1: it will air at I believe eight o'clock Eastern, not
- 6:00Speaker 1: even that seven o'clock garbage that we usually see it on.
- 6:02Speaker 1: This is primetime, baby, and it's celebrity Jeopardy. I'm loud
- 6:06Speaker 1: to tell you who I went against, and I'll tell
- 6:09Speaker 1: you the story of how I've found out who these
- 6:11Speaker 1: people were. So they don't tell you who you're against.
- 6:14Speaker 1: You show up. Now. Let me ask you if you
- 6:17Speaker 1: fly in on a Sunday for a Monday filming of
- 6:20Speaker 1: Jeopardy and you found out a couple of days earlier,
- 6:23Speaker 1: you'd probably want to prepare somehow, right, right, right, So Aaron,
- 6:28Speaker 1: I ask you, if you were told in eight days
- 6:29Speaker 1: you're going on Jeopardy, how would you prepare? I had
- 6:35Speaker 1: no idea.
- 6:35Speaker 2: I don't know how I would prepare if I was
- 6:37Speaker 2: told in a year you're going on Jeopardy.
- 6:39Speaker 1: There's no way to prepare for Jeopardy. You either know
- 6:41Speaker 1: this stuff or not. And a lot of it's like,
- 6:43Speaker 1: you know, we's say white men can't jump, like words
- 6:45Speaker 1: that start with the letter Q. Like, it's a lot
- 6:48Speaker 1: of it is puns and a lot of it is homonyms.
- 6:51Speaker 1: So here's my thing. I'm like, I'm gonna fly out.
- 6:54Speaker 1: I'm on delta. They've got wi Fi. I am gonna
- 6:58Speaker 1: just take a look at the main thing. State capitals,
- 7:02Speaker 1: smart geometry, like hexagon, rahmbus, I'm getting down octagon, US presidents.
- 7:10Speaker 1: I'm pretty good on them. But then when I looked
- 7:12Speaker 1: at the Wikipedia page, I was not good on them.
- 7:14Speaker 1: I'm like, they better not anything from the year seventeen
- 7:18Speaker 1: eighty to nineteen ninety. Like I thought I had it.
- 7:21Speaker 4: I didn't.
- 7:22Speaker 1: I didn't know about Fillmore's thing, and I didn't want
- 7:24Speaker 1: to go into it. Then I was like, okay, world history,
- 7:28Speaker 1: world capitals, Olympic cities, like these are the things that like,
- 7:31Speaker 1: I'm a little so.
- 7:33Speaker 2: So just to be clear, on your flight to LA,
- 7:36Speaker 2: you study geometry, state capitals, presidents, world history. This is
- 7:43Speaker 2: a large list of things.
- 7:45Speaker 1: All right. I have a photographic memory. I could see
- 7:48Speaker 1: something and never forget it. So I'm like, if I
- 7:50Speaker 1: just look at these things, I'll just have it in
- 7:53Speaker 1: the back of my head, and you know, one of
- 7:55Speaker 1: them will come up. I can tell you, rest assured,
- 7:58Speaker 1: none of them. Seven hours seven hours on a flight.
- 8:02Speaker 1: It's like Scott Hanson some hours studying everything. All right,
- 8:07Speaker 1: So let me finish, let me get to the next thing.
- 8:09Speaker 1: So I'm studying. I'm nervous, but then I'm like bored,
- 8:13Speaker 1: Like I'm on the flight and I'm like, so I
- 8:15Speaker 1: think I watched Like I think I watched like remember
- 8:18Speaker 1: the Fableman's Instead was that.
- 8:19Speaker 4: What it was called?
- 8:22Speaker 1: Yeah, I liked it, But like I gave up really
- 8:25Speaker 1: quickly in the studying. I was like ancient egypt facts
- 8:28Speaker 1: fell asleep, literally fell asleep. I'm like, I'm screwed. I
- 8:30Speaker 1: can't just like study the world. I don't know, I
- 8:33Speaker 1: can't do it. I land and they put me up
- 8:36Speaker 1: in a hotel in an area of LA called Culver City.
- 8:40Speaker 1: Culver City's where the NFL network used to be. I
- 8:42Speaker 1: don't know anything about it, but I'm like, all right,
- 8:44Speaker 1: I see there's a Roberto's Pizza there. They have one
- 8:46Speaker 1: of those in Brooklyn. I'm like, all right, I'll go
- 8:47Speaker 1: there for dinner. I get to Culver City and it's
- 8:51Speaker 1: the only time it's ever rained in the history of LA.
- 8:53Speaker 1: I think it's pouring rain, and then they're freaking out
- 8:56Speaker 1: that there's gonna be a hurricane. So now I've got
- 8:59Speaker 1: the stress of all right, I'm in a hurricane in
- 9:01Speaker 1: La which you know, They're the kind of city where
- 9:03Speaker 1: there's like a newscaster out there when it drizzles, and
- 9:05Speaker 1: it's like, what, the city's shut down, so everyone's freaking out.
- 9:08Speaker 1: I get to the hotel room and I again, I'm like,
- 9:13Speaker 1: do I study? Then there's three season football on. I'm like,
- 9:17Speaker 1: I want to look up Cumulus and Mbius or whatever
- 9:19Speaker 1: that is, you know. And all of a sudden, an
- 9:22Speaker 1: alarm clock that's next to the hotel room starts shaking
- 9:27Speaker 1: and falls off the nightstand, Like what the hell? And
- 9:32Speaker 1: then I see the TV's shit earthquake, a freaking earthquake.
- 9:40Speaker 1: I'm like, a hurricane and an earthquake the Sunday that
- 9:44Speaker 1: I arrive in La to do Celebrity Jeopardy the following day.
- 9:49Speaker 1: You can't make this stuff up. I decide to uh
- 9:54Speaker 1: just you know, just buckle down, go to sleep. And
- 9:56Speaker 1: then they're like, all right, your call time is two pm.
- 9:59Speaker 1: Call time for those of you in the uh not
- 10:02Speaker 1: in the entertainment business like me. I mean that's when
- 10:04Speaker 1: you've got to show up two pm. So I have
- 10:07Speaker 1: all I'm on East Coast time. I wake up at
- 10:09Speaker 1: like four point thirty wired coffee, Let's go sonny as
- 10:12Speaker 1: could be. I walked to some place like a long walk,
- 10:15Speaker 1: have breakfast. It was delicious, walk back and I'm like
- 10:18Speaker 1: just studying on my phone, like Wikipedia facts and looking
- 10:21Speaker 1: at like world leaders and facts about Bonaparte, and then
- 10:25Speaker 1: like World War two battles, like I'm doing it. I'm trying.
- 10:28Speaker 1: All this stuff was irrelevant. I then am like, all right,
- 10:34Speaker 1: thinking about it NonStop, nervous. I get to the Sony
- 10:39Speaker 1: lot where they're filming Jeopardy.
- 10:42Speaker 2: Still don't know who you're against?
- 10:43Speaker 1: No, okay, and I walk in and they're filming the
- 10:46Speaker 1: episode before me. Okay, and I'm watching it from like
- 10:51Speaker 1: a small TV and the episode before me was, huh,
- 10:57Speaker 1: who was it? It was? I think I can give
- 10:59Speaker 1: it away. I don't know if it's released. Yeah, okay.
- 11:02Speaker 1: Brian Baumgartner from the Office who played Kevin, you know,
- 11:05Speaker 1: spilling the chili Kevin, who's a Packers fan. We should
- 11:08Speaker 1: have him on the podcast. He's good. You might need
- 11:11Speaker 1: to google this. Abbott Elementary Lisa Ann Walter, who was
- 11:17Speaker 1: very nice. And then the third was I want to
- 11:21Speaker 1: say Jonah from Deep Timothy Simon's yep, tall guy, funny
- 11:26Speaker 1: as hell. That's the trio before me, and I'm watching
- 11:30Speaker 1: their match, and as I'm watching it, they're like, all right,
- 11:33Speaker 1: we're gonna take you to your trailer. I've never been
- 11:36Speaker 1: in a trailer before. Celebrity here. Hello. Meanwhile, I think
- 11:40Speaker 1: last year nothing against those actors or me, but like
- 11:43Speaker 1: last year was like Martin Short versus Jimmy Kimble versus
- 11:45Speaker 1: Meryl Streep, and now it's like me, good morning football
- 11:50Speaker 1: host Peter Sugar on a cable. I'm not knocking it.
- 11:53Speaker 1: I was very flattered and I'm honored to be there again.
- 11:56Speaker 1: Writers strike, acting strike me. I pop into my trailer
- 12:01Speaker 1: and they've got a thermis that says Celebrity Jeopardy. I'm like,
- 12:04Speaker 1: can I keep this? They're like yes. I'm like, hell yeah.
- 12:07Speaker 1: They've got a T shirt that says Celebrity Jeopardy. I'm like,
- 12:09Speaker 1: can I keep this? They're like yeah. And then they
- 12:11Speaker 1: had like all these snacks. I did damage before I
- 12:16Speaker 1: went on Jeopardy. I was so nervous. I think I
- 12:17Speaker 1: had an entire cheese plate. I think they had proscrudo,
- 12:21Speaker 1: they had capacola, they had some gba ghoul I ate
- 12:24Speaker 1: it all. I had a full meat and cheese plate
- 12:28Speaker 1: before I even stepped on to that thing. And then
- 12:29Speaker 1: they're like, all right, put on a suit. I put
- 12:32Speaker 1: on a suit. I'm ready, and they're like, all right,
- 12:34Speaker 1: we want to take you to makeup. Get to makeup.
- 12:38Speaker 1: Really good looking guy is waiting for their makeup and
- 12:41Speaker 1: he's not in a suit. He's in like a cool
- 12:43Speaker 1: like satin jacket with like his muscles out, and I'm like,
- 12:47Speaker 1: who's this guy. They're like, meet Adam Rodriguez. He's he
- 12:51Speaker 1: was from CSI Miami. He's also in the Magic Mic films.
- 12:55Speaker 1: And now I want to say he's in Criminal Minds.
- 12:57Speaker 1: You might need to do a little resume search for me,
- 12:58Speaker 1: a little Wikipedia, if you will. We've given Wikipedia enough
- 13:01Speaker 1: love and Cee, I asked one.
- 13:03Speaker 2: Of those like a CCSI Miami Magic like one and
- 13:07Speaker 2: double XL and Criminal Minds.
- 13:10Speaker 1: Yeah. So, and Adam's like, right away, like the most
- 13:12Speaker 1: handsome person I've ever seen. He's a little bit older
- 13:15Speaker 1: than me. He's uh, he's competing against me. He's from Yonkers.
- 13:19Speaker 1: So immediately we start talking New York and he's like, yeah,
- 13:22Speaker 1: my best friend from high school and like, my best
- 13:24Speaker 1: man at my wedding played in the NFL. I'm like, oh, who,
- 13:27Speaker 1: and he's like Keith Bullock. I'm like, oh, Syracuse legend,
- 13:29Speaker 1: Keith Bullen, Tennessee Titans, and like my Jeopardy mind because
- 13:32Speaker 1: I was like, yes, yes, He's like, yes, that's him.
- 13:35Speaker 1: I'm like thirteen tackles in one game playing against the
- 13:37Speaker 1: Jacksonville Jaguars in nineteen eighty nine. He's like yeah, dude,
- 13:40Speaker 1: yeah yeah. So we're hanging a little bit and then
- 13:45Speaker 1: in comes our third contestant. I don't know who it's
- 13:47Speaker 1: gonna be, and I see her face and I'm like, oh,
- 13:51Speaker 1: I know exactly who that is. And there's no way
- 13:54Speaker 1: that I am playing against this person in Celebrity Jeopardy
- 13:56Speaker 1: because I also know she went to Harvard is like
- 13:59Speaker 1: mensa and like works for the United Nations. Mere Cervino,
- 14:03Speaker 1: the actress who was in Roby and Michelle's Course and
- 14:06Speaker 1: then won an oscar. What was the Rudy Allen movie
- 14:10Speaker 1: she won the oscar for with her and Michael Rappaport
- 14:12Speaker 1: and Woody U great movie. Look it up, Mere Servino.
- 14:16Speaker 1: This is what we do on the podcast. I just
- 14:17Speaker 1: come in out of his fire at aeron Mighty Afrodite
- 14:20Speaker 1: Mighty Afred Diity Very good movie nineteen nineties, Woody Allen.
- 14:24Speaker 1: She I think was either nominated or won an Oscar
- 14:27Speaker 1: for that role as Best Supporting Actress. She's fantastic in it,
- 14:31Speaker 1: and I have since watched it since did she win
- 14:33Speaker 1: Best support She supporting her father, the late Paul Cervino,
- 14:37Speaker 1: who of course is in Goodfellas as the top of
- 14:41Speaker 1: the family. And you know he's in prison and he's
- 14:43Speaker 1: slicing the onions whatever it is anyway, garlic or onions.
- 14:47Speaker 1: I forget.
- 14:49Speaker 2: I guess that wasn't one of the questions. No, yes, yeah,
- 14:52Speaker 2: they didn't ask about her father.
- 14:53Speaker 1: So we get out there and they tell me hand
- 14:57Speaker 1: me over your phone. No phone's allowed in the studio.
- 15:02Speaker 1: A because of the sancity of the quiz show and
- 15:05Speaker 1: the laws, and B. I think there's a certain magic
- 15:09Speaker 1: and a lord in that place. But Aaron, when I
- 15:11Speaker 1: tell you, it felt like walking into like you know,
- 15:14Speaker 1: picturing field of dreams in the corn stalks of Iowa,
- 15:18Speaker 1: and shoeless Joe comes walking out there, like that's what
- 15:20Speaker 1: I felt like, walking into this thing. They have you
- 15:23Speaker 1: write your name into the thing. Don't you always think like,
- 15:26Speaker 1: how would I write my name on Jeopardy, I went
- 15:28Speaker 1: all caps lock. But that was pretty cool, okay, and
- 15:31Speaker 1: I didn't go with Schrager or Shrags or with Peter,
- 15:35Speaker 1: just my first name, you know. I felt pretty good
- 15:38Speaker 1: about that. And then they do a full round practice
- 15:42Speaker 1: like warm up, warm up, You've got to get down.
- 15:46Speaker 5: The buzzer and here is the big reveal. The buzzer
- 15:53Speaker 5: is everything. So here's how it works. With the buzzer,
- 15:58Speaker 5: they'll say a facto. I'd say number one.
- 16:01Speaker 1: iHeart podcast in NFL Slash really trying hard to get
- 16:06Speaker 1: to the super Bowl and doing a live show from there.
- 16:09Speaker 1: And you have to buzz in right away. But you
- 16:11Speaker 1: have to buzz in after Ken Jennings finishes. Okay, you
- 16:15Speaker 1: cannot buzz before it. If you if you buzz in
- 16:18Speaker 1: before he's finished with the clue, you're doc two seconds.
- 16:20Speaker 1: You're locked out. And so when you see people hitting
- 16:24Speaker 1: that buzzer like no, no, no, no, no, no, doing the
- 16:26Speaker 1: buzzer like that's because they're locked out. They're like, wait,
- 16:28Speaker 1: why is it not working? Why is that not working?
- 16:30Speaker 1: So timing on the butzer is everything, and you can't
- 16:33Speaker 1: practice that at home. You can know all the factoids.
- 16:36Speaker 1: You could tell me all of you know, King Henry's
- 16:39Speaker 1: wives or whoever it is, and you could know everything
- 16:42Speaker 1: about you know, Guadalajara. It doesn't matter if you can't
- 16:46Speaker 1: get that buzzer in on time and time and right.
- 16:48Speaker 2: So it's like anticipating how long it takes him to
- 16:51Speaker 2: finish his sentence. Yeah, and then buzz oh.
- 16:55Speaker 1: We go through the practice round Sorveno's got it down.
- 17:01Speaker 1: Her buzzer skills are insane. We go through a practice round.
- 17:05Speaker 1: She's what is Kim john Oun? What is Polio's string cheese?
- 17:15Speaker 1: What is remember the Titans?
- 17:17Speaker 3: Like?
- 17:17Speaker 1: She is on it? I'm psyched out. I needed like
- 17:20Speaker 1: a moment, so I think I was the first person ever.
- 17:23Speaker 1: They were like, we're about to start, everybody. I said,
- 17:26Speaker 1: can I take a pepe break? I went and I
- 17:29Speaker 1: got microphone off. I had to just take some time.
- 17:32Speaker 1: I didn't even have to go to the bathroom. I
- 17:33Speaker 1: took a lap around that studio. I soaked it all
- 17:36Speaker 1: in and then I straddled up and said let's go.
- 17:40Speaker 1: And then we did Celebrity Jeopardy and Guys It airs
- 17:44Speaker 1: next week. I will give you no more clues, no
- 17:47Speaker 1: more hints. Let's just say me and Mire Cervino and
- 17:49Speaker 1: Adam Rodriguez had a clash for the ages and I
- 17:55Speaker 1: want you to watch. I encourage you to watch. And
- 17:59Speaker 1: with no further ado, let's get to our guest today.
- 18:02Speaker 1: Aaron Our guest today is the defensive coordinator of the
- 18:05Speaker 1: Cincinnati He is one of the best coaches in all
- 18:09Speaker 1: of football. He's been running this unit for some time now,
- 18:11Speaker 1: and he's got a story to tell Lou and Aroumo
- 18:14Speaker 1: right after this, with no further ado. He's one of
- 18:20Speaker 1: the top defensive minds in all of football. He's also
- 18:23Speaker 1: a fantastic coach, and his team is coming off a
- 18:27Speaker 1: triumphant Sunday and a big win against a very good
- 18:30Speaker 1: Seattle Seahawks team. It is Cincinnati Bengals defensive coordinator Lou
- 18:34Speaker 1: and Aromo. Lou, Welcome to the season with Peter scheger Man.
- 18:38Speaker 4: I'm happy to be here. Appreciate the introduction.
- 18:40Speaker 1: Yeah, and let's start with Sunday. Four sacks, eight tackles
- 18:45Speaker 1: for a loss, two interceptions, DK Metcalf and Camp Taylor
- 18:51Speaker 1: getting into it a little bit, a little spicy. It
- 18:53Speaker 1: was a must win for the Cincinnati Bengals and the
- 18:55Speaker 1: defense led the way. How did your unit get into
- 18:58Speaker 1: this one? And what was the approach as you saw
- 19:00Speaker 1: it all being executed on Sunday.
- 19:02Speaker 4: So it was you know, didn't start out great.
- 19:03Speaker 3: You know, they did a good jot with taking the
- 19:05Speaker 3: ball going right down the field, and you can see,
- 19:08Speaker 3: you know, the bye week they had a buy prior
- 19:11Speaker 3: to coming in, so there's a couple of new wrinkles
- 19:13Speaker 3: for them. But once we settled in, you know, that
- 19:15Speaker 3: was the only touchdown they scored in the game. And
- 19:18Speaker 3: you know, our guys just executed in the red zone
- 19:20Speaker 3: and as you mentioned, you know, our our front four
- 19:23Speaker 3: really really did a great job pressure in Gino and
- 19:26Speaker 3: it paid off in the end.
- 19:27Speaker 1: Talk us through some of these players on this unit,
- 19:29Speaker 1: because I think it from a national perspective, they were
- 19:31Speaker 1: in the Super Bowl a couple of years ago, but
- 19:33Speaker 1: there's been a lot of i would say not a
- 19:36Speaker 1: youth movement in the back end. But like at that
- 19:38Speaker 1: Super Bowl team, it was Von Bell, it was Eli Apple,
- 19:41Speaker 1: it was and now there's these young guys. I mentioned
- 19:44Speaker 1: Taylor Brett, but he's not the only one.
- 19:45Speaker 3: Yeah, no, you know, we got rookie DJ Turner. You know,
- 19:49Speaker 3: cheetoh Wuzier has been injured and DJ's come in and
- 19:53Speaker 3: you know, getting better with each game. We signed Nick
- 19:56Speaker 3: Scott free agency from the Rams, and then as a
- 19:59Speaker 3: safety and Dax Hill playing another taking really Jesse Bates'
- 20:03Speaker 3: role he stepped in, and then Jordan Battle or rookie,
- 20:07Speaker 3: another rookie from Alabama. So you know, I don't have
- 20:10Speaker 3: a lot of gray hair, but I'm getting some more each.
- 20:12Speaker 1: Other, right, I mean that is that the is that
- 20:14Speaker 1: still the challenge that gets see up in the morning.
- 20:16Speaker 1: They're like, all right, we have a new fresh fresh
- 20:17Speaker 1: blood and we've got to throw them in there. And
- 20:19Speaker 1: guess what you're covering? Tyler Lockett, go, do you get
- 20:21Speaker 1: excited by that? Is that the challenge that gets you
- 20:23Speaker 1: out of bed in the morning.
- 20:24Speaker 3: The good news is, you know they definitely present challenge.
- 20:28Speaker 4: You know these guys.
- 20:28Speaker 3: It's just so different for the young guys coming in
- 20:31Speaker 3: from college these days, and you know, so yeah, it provides, uh,
- 20:35Speaker 3: it provides us more opportunity to make sure we're as
- 20:38Speaker 3: coaches staying on you know, dotting our eyes, crossing the.
- 20:41Speaker 4: T's all that stuff.
- 20:42Speaker 3: Because it's such a different game and you're playing against
- 20:45Speaker 3: guys that have done it for a long time. You
- 20:47Speaker 3: mentioned Tyler Lockett and DK Metcalf and man Cam you know,
- 20:51Speaker 3: kind of you know, took it to him, and I
- 20:53Speaker 3: was happy and proud to see it.
- 20:55Speaker 1: This this Bengals team again oh to two to start.
- 20:59Speaker 1: Everyone's saying they're done. Burrow can't move, and yet here
- 21:03Speaker 1: we are bye week three and three. What do you
- 21:06Speaker 1: know in the driver's seat, just like they usually are
- 21:08Speaker 1: at this point and feeling a little bit better than
- 21:10Speaker 1: they did in September? Did you have any doubts or
- 21:13Speaker 1: you knew that this team could bounce back despite the
- 21:15Speaker 1: O and two start.
- 21:16Speaker 3: I mean, we've got such great resolve with the players
- 21:19Speaker 3: that we have. You know, I kind of stole a
- 21:22Speaker 3: phrase that the my my beloved Yankees we used to
- 21:27Speaker 3: use and you know, the Core four, you know, And
- 21:30Speaker 3: and it came to play this weekend where it's the
- 21:32Speaker 3: last drive of the game and I go over the
- 21:35Speaker 3: BJ Hill, DJ Reader, Sam Hubbard and Trey Hendrickson and
- 21:40Speaker 3: I and they were gassed now at the end of
- 21:42Speaker 3: the game, and I said, you know, I was thinking
- 21:44Speaker 3: about for a minute putting some fresh legs in there.
- 21:46Speaker 3: And I checked myself quick and said, you four want.
- 21:51Speaker 3: I don't want anybody else in the game besides you guys,
- 21:53Speaker 3: and let's go win the game.
- 21:54Speaker 4: And they did what they did.
- 21:56Speaker 3: And those guys are kind of are they They drive
- 21:59Speaker 3: this ship on our side, and man, they didn't flinch
- 22:02Speaker 3: in the beginning of the year. You know, again with
- 22:05Speaker 3: the great veteran leadership that they have, they know who
- 22:07Speaker 3: we are, they know what we've done and what we've
- 22:09Speaker 3: accomplished at you know, a high level, and it's just
- 22:12Speaker 3: a matter of time before we put it all together.
- 22:14Speaker 1: That's your Jorge Pisada, You're Mariano Rivera, you're Jeter, and
- 22:18Speaker 1: you're who is the last one?
- 22:20Speaker 3: Bernie?
- 22:20Speaker 1: I would imagine, or do we go Tino Martinez?
- 22:22Speaker 3: Bernie?
- 22:22Speaker 1: Right, It's got to be Bernie. It's not it's who
- 22:25Speaker 1: is it? Who's the fourth? It's Pettit, Pettit Okay, Bernie
- 22:29Speaker 1: was before them. Bernie like, okay, got it.
- 22:32Speaker 4: Yeah, I was surprised when I looked it back up.
- 22:34Speaker 1: That's the core four. I think of Sam Hubbard. He's
- 22:37Speaker 1: like such a local guy and he represents everything about
- 22:40Speaker 1: this Bengals team and whether it be the Ohio state
- 22:42Speaker 1: roots at Cincinnati roots and the play he made last
- 22:45Speaker 1: year in the Wildcar Round is really the play that
- 22:47Speaker 1: most people know him from. But every day this guy
- 22:49Speaker 1: brings it. And I watch football, I don't. I'm not
- 22:51Speaker 1: sure everyone outside of Cincinnati knows just what type of
- 22:54Speaker 1: player and man that Sam Hubbard is.
- 22:56Speaker 3: For that defense, well, he's terrific when they introduce him here,
- 22:59Speaker 3: when they do introduce the defense, you know, and the
- 23:02Speaker 3: guy the public address announcer starts with Cincinnati's own, you know,
- 23:05Speaker 3: and then Sam Harbor and he is what we are
- 23:09Speaker 3: as you mentioned. I mean, the guy played sixty four
- 23:12Speaker 3: plays the other day, had a ton of production, hit
- 23:16Speaker 3: the quarterback six times, you know, and just a great
- 23:19Speaker 3: He's been a great run defender for us for years.
- 23:22Speaker 3: He's got a you know, a heck of a pass
- 23:23Speaker 3: rush game. So he's everything we're all about. And you know,
- 23:26Speaker 3: you go back to the AFC Championship game two years ago,
- 23:30Speaker 3: and you know he's the one that's kind of getting
- 23:32Speaker 3: after Mahomes on that crucial third down stop to force
- 23:37Speaker 3: them to kick the field goal to get in to
- 23:40Speaker 3: get in overtime and eventually win the game. So Sam,
- 23:43Speaker 3: Sam's done so much for us and a great community guy,
- 23:46Speaker 3: and we just love him.
- 23:48Speaker 1: We're gonna go backwards, We're gonna go through your career
- 23:50Speaker 1: a little bit. But let's let's go just a couple
- 23:52Speaker 1: of years backwards. That Super Bowl run and then the
- 23:54Speaker 1: AFC Championship run. When you got to Cincinnati, it was
- 23:58Speaker 1: it was you, Zach, and it was obviously Callahan is
- 24:00Speaker 1: the offhys like things were not things were not humming,
- 24:03Speaker 1: if by any means, And of course there had been
- 24:05Speaker 1: some good seasons, but no wins, playoffs, nothing in recent years.
- 24:09Speaker 1: Take us back just the last i would say, twenty
- 24:11Speaker 1: four months, and just how far this franchise has come
- 24:14Speaker 1: in the last couple of years alone.
- 24:16Speaker 3: Well, we're you know, as you mentioned, Zach and Cally
- 24:19Speaker 3: just doing such a great job and on respective you know,
- 24:22Speaker 3: Zach as the head coach and Brian is the coordinator
- 24:24Speaker 3: on offense. But it's so satisfying as a coach and
- 24:30Speaker 3: some of the players that have been here from the
- 24:31Speaker 3: beginning when we got here in twenty nineteen, and as
- 24:34Speaker 3: you mentioned, you know, Marvin had done a great job
- 24:37Speaker 3: and had really good success, and we just we the
- 24:42Speaker 3: team that we inherited a little bit older. You know,
- 24:45Speaker 3: we knew we had to turn the roster over to
- 24:47Speaker 3: a degree, and those guys had done great things here
- 24:50Speaker 3: for Cincinnati, and we just knew that, you know, it's
- 24:54Speaker 3: our time to get some new guys in here and
- 24:57Speaker 3: to go through that whole thing. And you know, first
- 25:00Speaker 3: playoff win in thirty some odd years and then oh,
- 25:03Speaker 3: by the way, you get the first road playoff win
- 25:06Speaker 3: in team history ever, all those firsts.
- 25:09Speaker 4: You're just very, very proud to be a part of it.
- 25:13Speaker 1: Yeah, it's and I love, I'm so proud of you.
- 25:15Speaker 1: It's happy for your unit, as you guys have always
- 25:17Speaker 1: held up your end of the bargain. Let's go back
- 25:21Speaker 1: your coaching journey nineteen eighty nine. We go to the
- 25:24Speaker 1: fine borough of Staten Island and the running backs coach
- 25:28Speaker 1: at Wagner is lou and Arimo. What led you to Wagner?
- 25:33Speaker 1: And I know you're a Staten Island guy, So just
- 25:34Speaker 1: take us through how you even thought that this could
- 25:37Speaker 1: possibly be a career coming from Staten Islands. It's not
- 25:40Speaker 1: exactly a football hotbit, if I may say so.
- 25:43Speaker 4: No, you're good.
- 25:45Speaker 3: Just you know, my dad was a high school basketball
- 25:50Speaker 3: coach growing up, so it was always kind of around it.
- 25:52Speaker 3: He played college basketball at Wagner and was a principal
- 25:55Speaker 3: and kind of so I always knew I wanted to
- 25:57Speaker 3: teach and coach, and then one thing led to another.
- 26:01Speaker 3: You know, I never had a great stellar career playing wise,
- 26:05Speaker 3: but I always knew I still wanted to be around it,
- 26:08Speaker 3: and one thing led to another. I got my first
- 26:11Speaker 3: big break when you know, Dick McPherson called and I
- 26:14Speaker 3: was able to be a GA at Syracuse where I
- 26:19Speaker 3: worked for coach Mac and then coached Pascaloni, and kind
- 26:22Speaker 3: of everything gone from there was just you know, a
- 26:25Speaker 3: step I thought. I think I went about it the
- 26:27Speaker 3: right way. I've coached at all levels, you know, from
- 26:30Speaker 3: Marshall to Harvard to Purdue, you know, and then onto
- 26:32Speaker 3: the NFL. So great, great experiences along the way, and
- 26:36Speaker 3: I think that that's one of the things that I
- 26:39Speaker 3: think is a missing art these days, where you know,
- 26:43Speaker 3: you learn more what not to do along the way
- 26:45Speaker 3: and how to coach different types of people all along
- 26:48Speaker 3: the way, whether it be a non scholarship player or
- 26:51Speaker 3: an elite athlete in the NFL. So I feel like
- 26:54Speaker 3: I got the best of all worlds, and I wouldn't
- 26:56Speaker 3: change my career path for anything.
- 26:58Speaker 1: I love it. And so you go from Wagner Tocus
- 27:00Speaker 1: and then this is a cool one US Merchant Marine
- 27:04Speaker 1: Academy as a defensive coordinator to defensive backs coach. Those
- 27:07Speaker 1: are young men and women who are going there for
- 27:10Speaker 1: a different reason than to become NFL players. And yet
- 27:12Speaker 1: you as a coach, you're going to get the best
- 27:14Speaker 1: of them, and you're going to see a probably different
- 27:15Speaker 1: type of individual than you might anywhere else. What was
- 27:18Speaker 1: that experience like coaching at the US Merchant Marine Academy.
- 27:21Speaker 3: It was unbelievable because these guys are not only going
- 27:23Speaker 3: through training camp, but they're also going through what they
- 27:26Speaker 3: call their pleab year, where they're square in corners and
- 27:30Speaker 3: you know, getting up at dawn to go for runs.
- 27:33Speaker 3: And you know, by the way, you don't have those
- 27:35Speaker 3: guys in the offseason because they're going out to see
- 27:37Speaker 3: for six months to learn the what they're going to
- 27:39Speaker 3: do come on as a career and oh, by the way,
- 27:42Speaker 3: we want a bunch of games, you know, So again
- 27:44Speaker 3: you learn how to manage your time, manage those type
- 27:47Speaker 3: of people that have a you know, a greater goal really,
- 27:51Speaker 3: but at the end of the day. They when football
- 27:53Speaker 3: season came around, that's what they were all about. It
- 27:55Speaker 3: was really really unique.
- 27:57Speaker 1: You know, the experience of being there. I remember talking
- 28:00Speaker 1: to I forget which player it was, someone came out
- 28:02Speaker 1: of the Citadel and was playing in the NFL. And
- 28:04Speaker 1: of course we have our Army and our Navy guys,
- 28:05Speaker 1: but there is something different about coaching those young men
- 28:09Speaker 1: and women because, like I said, the priority is of
- 28:12Speaker 1: course football when you're on the field, but there is
- 28:14Speaker 1: such a different thing going on. Did you have to
- 28:17Speaker 1: bend and kind of adjust your coaching style knowing that, yes,
- 28:22Speaker 1: they might be disciplined, but this is not their top priority.
- 28:25Speaker 1: Is why they're here at school?
- 28:26Speaker 4: Well, one hundred percent.
- 28:27Speaker 3: I was a super I was super young back then,
- 28:29Speaker 3: just learning how I was going to you know, become
- 28:32Speaker 3: as a coach. And again, as I mentioned earlier, you
- 28:35Speaker 3: learned so much of you know, the things you want
- 28:37Speaker 3: to do.
- 28:37Speaker 4: And then well, maybe.
- 28:39Speaker 3: We can't quite do as much with guys that, you know,
- 28:43Speaker 3: just coming from Syracuse, we had all these great defenses,
- 28:45Speaker 3: but you know, you're getting these guys in between their
- 28:48Speaker 3: you know, engineering classes and trying to install a game
- 28:52Speaker 3: plan is very challenging.
- 28:55Speaker 4: Same thing at Harvard.
- 28:56Speaker 3: You know when I coached at Harvard for all those years,
- 28:58Speaker 3: and I still stay in touch with a bunch of
- 29:00Speaker 3: those guys, and we had really good players there. You
- 29:02Speaker 3: know Matt Burke who played NFL Vikings for a long time, Ravens. Yeah,
- 29:08Speaker 3: you know, so we had a bunch of guys while
- 29:10Speaker 3: I was there. I just missed fits he had just
- 29:14Speaker 3: after me. But again, another situation where I'll never forget.
- 29:17Speaker 3: I'm in a in a meeting, in a defensive back meeting,
- 29:20Speaker 3: and I think I said, you know, this stuff isn't
- 29:21Speaker 3: rocket science. And I was like thinking to myself, like
- 29:23Speaker 3: anybody here like doing any of that kind.
- 29:29Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, yeah, I kind of am coach. I was like, oh,
- 29:33Speaker 4: gate so cool, cool stuff for sure.
- 29:37Speaker 1: Okay, So I live in New York and I'm a
- 29:39Speaker 1: huge comedy nerd. And Colin Jost is the head writer
- 29:42Speaker 1: for Saturday Night Live. He's a Staten Island native and
- 29:45Speaker 1: he went to Harvard as and was a part of
- 29:48Speaker 1: the Lampoon all that. I have to think, you too
- 29:50Speaker 1: might be the only pipeline of Staten Island to Harvard.
- 29:54Speaker 1: What's it like when you get plopped in to that
- 29:56Speaker 1: Harvard and you're all of a sudden with world dignitaries
- 29:59Speaker 1: and you're in that kind of Was that an adjustment
- 30:01Speaker 1: going to the Ivy League and dealing with that for
- 30:03Speaker 1: what six years you were there?
- 30:05Speaker 4: Yeah, it was.
- 30:06Speaker 3: It was quite the adjustment, especially going on some of
- 30:08Speaker 3: those home visits.
- 30:09Speaker 4: Uh, you know, all over the country. It was great.
- 30:12Speaker 3: Again, another great experience because I got to nationally recruit
- 30:16Speaker 3: as a young coach where which helped me out later on.
- 30:19Speaker 3: And uh, you know you're going all over the place
- 30:21Speaker 3: and you're meeting all types of different people, and yeah,
- 30:25Speaker 3: it was.
- 30:25Speaker 4: It was walking around the.
- 30:27Speaker 3: Hallowed halls of Harvard as a Staten Island guy was
- 30:30Speaker 3: pretty cool.
- 30:31Speaker 1: Yeah, you go to Marshall for several I guess that's
- 30:34Speaker 1: during the Leftoo years. I guess you were at Marshall. Yeah.
- 30:37Speaker 3: Byron was a quarterback. We we won a ton of games.
- 30:40Speaker 3: I was on the sideline when they carried him down.
- 30:43Speaker 1: Yeah, it was.
- 30:44Speaker 3: It was I don't know, minus twelve in the Rubber
- 30:47Speaker 3: Bowl against the Akron that day. I mean it was
- 30:50Speaker 3: freezing and you know Byron. It just tells you all
- 30:53Speaker 3: about Byron, what what kind of he was about to
- 30:55Speaker 3: be a top ten pick in the draft, and I'll
- 30:57Speaker 3: never forget. They asked him after the game, they said, hey,
- 31:02Speaker 3: you know, you know, weren't you worried about your family
- 31:04Speaker 3: and and what's about to come?
- 31:06Speaker 4: He goes, my family was out on the field.
- 31:08Speaker 1: Yes, answer, I was Byron.
- 31:10Speaker 3: Leftwich to a T and I love Byron Hill today.
- 31:13Speaker 1: That's awesome. Then Purdue and you're stacking up years and
- 31:17Speaker 1: years years, and then there's a call twenty twelve Miami Dolphins.
- 31:23Speaker 1: Who made the call? How'd that come about? And then
- 31:26Speaker 1: after putting in decades at the college level, what made
- 31:29Speaker 1: you finally take the leap to get into the big leagues?
- 31:31Speaker 3: So it's it's it had always been a goal, you know,
- 31:35Speaker 3: all the years in college. I uh, you know, I
- 31:37Speaker 3: would always go visit NFL places. I would come to Cincinnati.
- 31:40Speaker 3: Kevin Coyle was a friend, and I would come here
- 31:42Speaker 3: and see see those guys with Zim and Marvin. You know,
- 31:46Speaker 3: I made had an interview. I wasn't ready to get
- 31:49Speaker 3: the job, probably in two thousand and four or five,
- 31:52Speaker 3: with Money kiffing down in Tampa to be the coach. Yeah,
- 31:55Speaker 3: and money and I a lot of my stuff. You know,
- 31:57Speaker 3: the the u our stuff, I should say, the core
- 32:01Speaker 3: stuff of the fundamentals of just playing football. You know,
- 32:04Speaker 3: got a chance to talk to Moni for years, used
- 32:06Speaker 3: to come after that became good friends and talking ball,
- 32:09Speaker 3: and that was a great experience. John was the head coach,
- 32:13Speaker 3: and Rich Basaca was in the room, Joe Barry was
- 32:15Speaker 3: in the room. So a lot of guys that you know,
- 32:18Speaker 3: people know and again another great experience. But yeah, so Joe,
- 32:22Speaker 3: Philbin and I worked together at two colleges. We worked
- 32:26Speaker 3: together at the us MMA United States Merchant Marine Academy,
- 32:30Speaker 3: and we also worked together at Harvard, so you talk
- 32:33Speaker 3: about connections. And then Kevin Coyle was a defensive coordinator.
- 32:37Speaker 3: Kevin and I know each other for a long time.
- 32:40Speaker 4: So it kind of just worked out.
- 32:42Speaker 1: So you get there twenty twelve, What was that leap
- 32:44Speaker 1: like and what was your first welcome to the NFL
- 32:46Speaker 1: moment as a coach?
- 32:47Speaker 3: You know it was it was you know, I remember
- 32:51Speaker 3: Kevin saying something to me about, you know, hey, these
- 32:54Speaker 3: guys are different than the college guys. You know, you
- 32:56Speaker 3: got to make sure you approach it the right way.
- 32:58Speaker 3: And but I really didn't. I didn't really see it
- 33:01Speaker 3: as a big adjustment. I just was always just me
- 33:04Speaker 3: And I've never in my life knock on Wood had
- 33:06Speaker 3: a problem with my players ever. And when there is
- 33:09Speaker 3: a problem, we sit down and we talk about it.
- 33:11Speaker 3: But I didn't see it as a huge adjustment, just,
- 33:14Speaker 3: you know, just another another group of guys that wanted
- 33:17Speaker 3: to be coached, and and as long as you're around
- 33:20Speaker 3: players like that, you know you'll get the best at them.
- 33:23Speaker 4: And it worked out.
- 33:25Speaker 1: Okay. Then you're there for a while and there's a
- 33:27Speaker 1: homecoming assort, so you jump for a job in twenty
- 33:29Speaker 1: eighteen and you come to the New York Giants wearing
- 33:32Speaker 1: the big blue jerseys, and of course that's in the
- 33:34Speaker 1: backyard of Staten Island, only a few miles away. DB's coach,
- 33:38Speaker 1: who was the coach was that McAdoo, who was the
- 33:40Speaker 1: coach there when you were there with them, Pat Shermer
- 33:42Speaker 1: uh Sherman.
- 33:43Speaker 4: I was with Pat.
- 33:44Speaker 3: You know, we we let you know when when Joe
- 33:48Speaker 3: Philbrim was fired down to Miami, Dan Campbell was the
- 33:51Speaker 3: interim head coach, and Dan named me the defensive coordinator
- 33:56Speaker 3: and Zach the offensive coordinator. So it's small world.
- 33:59Speaker 1: Think about that right now, Dave Campbell was the head coach,
- 34:02Speaker 1: Zach Taylor was the offensive coordinator, and you were the
- 34:04Speaker 1: defensive coordinator. You look at those three games right now,
- 34:07Speaker 1: if you go through it, Campbell's maybe you got the
- 34:09Speaker 1: best team in football with the Lions. Then you and
- 34:11Speaker 1: Zach a together at the Vengals. How cool is that?
- 34:13Speaker 3: And oh, by the way, Ben Johnson's floating around the
- 34:15Speaker 3: building too.
- 34:16Speaker 1: It's the mastermind offensive coordinator in Detroit. But this is
- 34:20Speaker 1: like that team was a forgettable team. No offense to
- 34:22Speaker 1: those guys. But like no one's writing books about the
- 34:24Speaker 1: twenty fifteen Miami Dolphins, and here we are. There's all
- 34:27Speaker 1: that talent in the coaching ranks, similar to the twenty
- 34:30Speaker 1: eleven Washington Redskins that we talk about, or the mid
- 34:33Speaker 1: two thousands Buccaneers like you were talking about. There's just
- 34:37Speaker 1: all these young coaches and it's almost like an incubator.
- 34:39Speaker 4: Yeah, no doubt.
- 34:40Speaker 3: And you know we always used to That's how Zach
- 34:42Speaker 3: and I became so close is during those years in Miami.
- 34:46Speaker 3: You know, he'd come down to my office or I'd
- 34:47Speaker 3: go down to his office and just say, what are
- 34:49Speaker 3: these guys trying to do? And you know, and that's
- 34:52Speaker 3: how you build friendships, and you know, you get to
- 34:55Speaker 3: know who you know, Hey, I really we have the
- 34:57Speaker 3: same way of thinking about things and our philosophies are
- 35:00Speaker 3: the same and so yeah, so we move on to
- 35:03Speaker 3: the Giants, which was you know, I mean, I grew
- 35:06Speaker 3: up in Giant fan. I grew up watching Lawrence Tailor
- 35:08Speaker 3: and Phil Simms and all those guys. It was, it was,
- 35:10Speaker 3: it was awesome. I actually my family stayed in Miami
- 35:14Speaker 3: because my kids were finishing high school and stuff. And
- 35:18Speaker 3: I'll never forget, like I moved back into you know,
- 35:21Speaker 3: I could say it now, I moved back into the
- 35:25Speaker 3: same house, the same room I grew up in. So
- 35:29Speaker 3: I moved until I ended up obviously got my own
- 35:32Speaker 3: place there.
- 35:32Speaker 1: How long were you there in your old parents' house?
- 35:35Speaker 3: Correct? It was about two months.
- 35:39Speaker 1: We got Farah fawcet posters. What are we dealing with here?
- 35:42Speaker 1: We got Natari Tari and Nintendo? What do we got?
- 35:45Speaker 3: Thank god, Mom had cleared out most of that stuff
- 35:47Speaker 3: and it was a guest room. But I will say this,
- 35:50Speaker 3: she was like, you know, what time are you gonna
- 35:52Speaker 3: be home for dinner?
- 35:53Speaker 1: I said, I'm not, you got kids in high school.
- 36:00Speaker 1: I got what time you got dinner? Okay, your curfew
- 36:02Speaker 1: is this?
- 36:02Speaker 4: It was?
- 36:03Speaker 3: It was absolutely classic. But we finally found a place
- 36:06Speaker 3: to day. And but it was a great two months.
- 36:08Speaker 4: I did.
- 36:09Speaker 3: I did get some great meals and I packed on
- 36:11Speaker 3: about fifteen pounds.
- 36:12Speaker 1: Of course I'm cooking. Before we move on, Dan Campbell,
- 36:17Speaker 1: did you know then this guy had it?
- 36:19Speaker 4: Yeah? I love Dan.
- 36:20Speaker 3: You know, Dan is and he hasn't changed the lick.
- 36:23Speaker 3: And that's the great thing about Dan. I think myself
- 36:25Speaker 3: and Zach very similar in terms of while our approaches
- 36:28Speaker 3: may be different, we have none of us have changed
- 36:32Speaker 3: our personality. And I think Dan has remained. He's always
- 36:35Speaker 3: been that way. He was always that way as a
- 36:37Speaker 3: tight end coach. And you know we saw it for that,
- 36:41Speaker 3: you know, twelve games we had, you know, we had
- 36:43Speaker 3: most of the year that year as a head coach.
- 36:46Speaker 3: We saw how he would be and you know, the
- 36:49Speaker 3: players rallied around him and us right away, and it
- 36:53Speaker 3: was it was great.
- 36:54Speaker 1: Yeah. Do you have a good Dan Campbell story? Sorry
- 36:56Speaker 1: to go on the Dan Campbell tangent here about the content,
- 36:59Speaker 1: give me, give me the Dan. You're in an elevator
- 37:02Speaker 1: at a dinner party. They're like, oh, you worked with
- 37:04Speaker 1: Dan Campbell. Give me a story.
- 37:05Speaker 3: What do you got, Well, I'll give you. I'll give
- 37:07Speaker 3: you a locker room story.
- 37:09Speaker 4: Nothing weird or anything.
- 37:11Speaker 3: But he knows me and I know him right, So
- 37:14Speaker 3: I would come in, we'd come in about the same time.
- 37:16Speaker 4: In the morning.
- 37:18Speaker 3: We'd end up in the you know, just putting our
- 37:21Speaker 3: coaching gear on, and he would you know, I'm not
- 37:24Speaker 3: the happiest guy in the morning.
- 37:25Speaker 4: I'm a little grumpy. And Dan's always ready to go.
- 37:28Speaker 3: So he would say he would look at the clock,
- 37:31Speaker 3: say up, can't talk to lou It's not past seven thirty.
- 37:34Speaker 3: He doesn't talk to anybody, and just break my you
- 37:36Speaker 3: know what the whole way through.
- 37:37Speaker 4: So now we still talk about that today.
- 37:39Speaker 3: I never called He never calls me in the morning
- 37:41Speaker 3: because he knows I'm not picking it up.
- 37:43Speaker 1: He knows better. I love that, all right, And then
- 37:49Speaker 1: your name starts getting hot and you get to Cincinnati,
- 37:52Speaker 1: you're running this defense, and the last couple off seasons
- 37:55Speaker 1: you've interviewed for head coaching jobs. What's your approach to
- 37:58Speaker 1: those interviews? And the Giants were one I know Arizona
- 38:01Speaker 1: got down to the wire last year. When you go
- 38:04Speaker 1: in there for those coaching jobs, what is your message
- 38:06Speaker 1: to these own And I have no doubt you will
- 38:08Speaker 1: be a head coach in the coming years if you
- 38:09Speaker 1: want to be. But what's it like going in for
- 38:11Speaker 1: those interviews and what's your why they should hire coach
- 38:14Speaker 1: Lou Romo?
- 38:15Speaker 4: Yeah? No, I appreciate it, you know.
- 38:17Speaker 3: To me, I think at the end of the day,
- 38:19Speaker 3: what moves people, what moves teams, and it's it's how
- 38:24Speaker 3: you get these players and how you get them to
- 38:27Speaker 3: do things on a consistent basis, and how you motivate them.
- 38:31Speaker 3: This is a ultimate, as we all know, an ultimate
- 38:34Speaker 3: team game and team sport. But unless you can grab
- 38:37Speaker 3: each and every one of the guys on the team
- 38:39Speaker 3: at all positions, and I think I've been able to.
- 38:43Speaker 4: That's one of my strengths.
- 38:44Speaker 3: It's my biggest strength, is that I've never had an
- 38:47Speaker 3: issue of making sure that we come together as a group,
- 38:51Speaker 3: come together as a team, and ultimately, that's what the
- 38:54Speaker 3: head coach of a team should be is a guy
- 38:56Speaker 3: that can get guys to move towards a common goal
- 38:59Speaker 3: and do it in a way that they know that
- 39:02Speaker 3: there's a great amount of respect on both sides. You know,
- 39:04Speaker 3: I've always had I've always done a good job of
- 39:06Speaker 3: that and always done had away with players and make
- 39:11Speaker 3: sure we'll managing.
- 39:11Speaker 4: Them the right way.
- 39:12Speaker 3: And at the end of the day, you know, you
- 39:14Speaker 3: just listen to some of the things that they say.
- 39:16Speaker 3: You know, I'm not an ego guy or anything like that,
- 39:18Speaker 3: but our guys play for us over here and they
- 39:21Speaker 3: always have And to me, that's the sign of a
- 39:24Speaker 3: good coach is that you get your guys to do
- 39:26Speaker 3: things consistently.
- 39:28Speaker 1: Yeah, and you guys play and you mentioned that Core four.
- 39:31Speaker 1: I watched these Bengals games. Those guys are so dialed
- 39:33Speaker 1: into the connection you have with Trey Hendrickson. Can you
- 39:38Speaker 1: talk about that guy, because I feel like he's most
- 39:40Speaker 1: underrated pass rusher in the sport in this week in
- 39:42Speaker 1: week out. He's causing trouble and we never talk about
- 39:44Speaker 1: him in the same conversation as a Miles Garrett or
- 39:46Speaker 1: a Bosa or even now Max Crosby.
- 39:49Speaker 3: It's amazing, you know some of the things and DJ
- 39:52Speaker 3: Reader kind of in the same light in a different
- 39:55Speaker 3: way in the run game. But Trey is just a phenomenal,
- 39:57Speaker 3: phenomenal pass rusher. He is always around the quarterback. You know,
- 40:02Speaker 3: the amount of hits, the false starts, the holding call.
- 40:07Speaker 3: He's had three or four sacks taken away this year
- 40:10Speaker 3: because the penalty's on third down or l TV, leading
- 40:12Speaker 3: the league. So just a relentless guy and his approach
- 40:16Speaker 3: to the game and is in his approach to how
- 40:19Speaker 3: we pass rushes, but within this framework of what we're
- 40:22Speaker 3: doing on defense, which is rare to find these days.
- 40:24Speaker 3: And I think, to me, again, that's one of the
- 40:27Speaker 3: reasons why we've been good on defense is it's a
- 40:31Speaker 3: collective effort. It's not just one guy trying to do
- 40:34Speaker 3: more than he's supposed to do. And as you mentioned,
- 40:37Speaker 3: you know, we don't feel like we've got a bunch
- 40:40Speaker 3: of stars. We've got a bunch of really good football
- 40:42Speaker 3: players that play together as one.
- 40:44Speaker 1: Yeah, And it's just what it is when you're playing
- 40:46Speaker 1: for the Cincinnati Bengals, with the exception of maybe Joe
- 40:48Speaker 1: Burrow and Jamaar Chase, it's just these are not superstar
- 40:52Speaker 1: you know. It's not Dallas, it's not the Giants. It's
- 40:55Speaker 1: not necessarily one of these franchises that gets the same
- 40:58Speaker 1: light because historically they haven't. And yet it doesn't seem
- 41:01Speaker 1: like your defensive players cry about that or even seem
- 41:03Speaker 1: to care.
- 41:04Speaker 3: No, they are a prideful group, number one, I'll tell
- 41:07Speaker 3: you that. And we just kind of quietly go about
- 41:09Speaker 3: our business. And we know, like the other day during
- 41:12Speaker 3: the game, I hear DJ reader behind me, just put
- 41:15Speaker 3: the ball down again, let's go, let's get another stop,
- 41:17Speaker 3: Let's get another stop. There's never any varying from that,
- 41:21Speaker 3: and that's rare in today's NFL. And I think again,
- 41:25Speaker 3: it's a part of the culture that Zach's built as
- 41:29Speaker 3: a team and what we've tried to do here on defense.
- 41:31Speaker 3: And we can control what we can control, and a
- 41:34Speaker 3: lot of people say that, but we demonstrate it, and
- 41:37Speaker 3: you know, you can see it by how what we've
- 41:39Speaker 3: done in the biggest games.
- 41:41Speaker 1: Go around the division real quick, because I think that's
- 41:43Speaker 1: the most heated division when it comes to rivalry games.
- 41:46Speaker 1: And I feel like none of those teams like each other.
- 41:48Speaker 1: None of you guys want to lose to the other
- 41:51Speaker 1: one and another one want to see the other teams beat
- 41:52Speaker 1: the other ones. Like I think about even the Bengals,
- 41:55Speaker 1: like the dynamic between the Bengals and the Ravens is
- 41:58Speaker 1: very interesting in recent years. When you guys were down,
- 42:01Speaker 1: the Ravens were dancing on the graves, and then when
- 42:03Speaker 1: you guys had a chance a couple of years ago,
- 42:05Speaker 1: you poured it on the Ravens pretty bad. And there's
- 42:07Speaker 1: no love there. Steelers. Of course, the Browns for whatever reason,
- 42:10Speaker 1: continue to win against you guys, and then it's like
- 42:13Speaker 1: a round robin. Everyone seems to beat the other teams
- 42:16Speaker 1: those division games n AFC North, Now that you've been there
- 42:18Speaker 1: for several years, just how significant are those matchups?
- 42:21Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean it's unbelievable.
- 42:22Speaker 3: I mean, you go back to last year's playoffs and
- 42:25Speaker 3: I felt like we played the Ravens fifteen weeks in.
- 42:27Speaker 1: A row the last game of the season, that right
- 42:29Speaker 1: in the wild.
- 42:30Speaker 3: Card, and you know, we all know what we're getting
- 42:33Speaker 3: into when we, you know, strapping up against those guys
- 42:38Speaker 3: or the as you mentioned, the Steelers and as you mentioned,
- 42:40Speaker 3: the Browns have kind of had our number a little bit.
- 42:43Speaker 3: But you know, it's fierce competitiveness. It's like, you know,
- 42:47Speaker 3: we used to have this great rivalry a Thanksgiving Day
- 42:50Speaker 3: game in high school where you got two neighbors they're
- 42:53Speaker 3: going to go against each other. That's how every one
- 42:55Speaker 3: of these games are, and you know it's going to
- 42:57Speaker 3: usually come down right to the end, but they are tough.
- 43:00Speaker 3: Everything I heard about the AFC North is true. You
- 43:04Speaker 3: know you're going to come in here and you know,
- 43:07Speaker 3: as I tell our guys, the only adjustments we're gonna
- 43:09Speaker 3: have to make is to tighten our chin strap.
- 43:10Speaker 4: And right.
- 43:13Speaker 1: Last year, after the AFC Championship game, there was the
- 43:15Speaker 1: late hit call and everyone's there, and there was the
- 43:17Speaker 1: clip of Pratt talking in the locker room, and that
- 43:20Speaker 1: could blow up a lot of teams. It seemed like
- 43:22Speaker 1: it didn't affect the Cincinnati Bengals. What was the conversations
- 43:25Speaker 1: afterwards Asi Pratt and then of course the late hit
- 43:28Speaker 1: called itself that that really was kind of a non
- 43:31Speaker 1: issue once the season started.
- 43:33Speaker 3: So I think it's a great question, and I actually
- 43:36Speaker 3: used it on my interview with Arizona and because it
- 43:41Speaker 3: was a moment where, you know, Jermaine is an emotional guy,
- 43:44Speaker 3: and that's an emotional moment at the highest level where
- 43:47Speaker 3: three points away from going to back to back Super Bowls,
- 43:50Speaker 3: and so he said what he said, But the next
- 43:55Speaker 3: day in the locker room, Jermaine is basically crying and saying,
- 43:59Speaker 3: you know, it's my fault. I was.
- 44:01Speaker 4: You know, I shouldn't have said what I said.
- 44:03Speaker 3: You know, Joe is part of the reasons why we
- 44:05Speaker 3: got to this point and just squashed it immediately without
- 44:09Speaker 3: I didn't have to say nothing to him, Zach didn't
- 44:11Speaker 3: have to say anything to him.
- 44:12Speaker 4: It was just a heated moment. But but it was
- 44:14Speaker 4: squashed right away.
- 44:15Speaker 3: And oh, by the way, bj Hill has his arm
- 44:18Speaker 3: around Joseph who's crying in the locker room because he
- 44:21Speaker 3: obviously didn't.
- 44:22Speaker 4: Want to do that.
- 44:24Speaker 3: And just said, no more questions for him. I'll answer
- 44:27Speaker 3: his questions today. And so again, to me, I showed
- 44:30Speaker 3: that I had all I had my.
- 44:32Speaker 1: Pet emotional, I get emotional. Are you talking about it?
- 44:35Speaker 3: It was and I felt the need to like, well,
- 44:37Speaker 3: how do you how do you show culture? How do
- 44:40Speaker 3: you what's your way of changing our culture?
- 44:42Speaker 4: Well? Here here it is, let me show you.
- 44:44Speaker 3: Uh And and these guys want to you know, they
- 44:47Speaker 3: want to not only play for each other, but they're
- 44:50Speaker 3: going to stand up for each other in the most
- 44:52Speaker 3: heated moments.
- 44:53Speaker 4: You know, when everything's going good and you're winning games,
- 44:56Speaker 4: anybody can be the head coach.
- 44:57Speaker 3: Okay, it's when you have gone through what we've gone
- 45:01Speaker 3: through here from five years ago to where we are
- 45:04Speaker 3: now and and all of the steps away, both positively
- 45:08Speaker 3: and negatively, that you really know what is needed to
- 45:10Speaker 3: be done to change a team around.
- 45:13Speaker 1: That's beautiful.
- 45:14Speaker 2: All right.
- 45:14Speaker 1: We did a little rapid fire here to wrap things up.
- 45:16Speaker 1: I love talking to you. I can talk to you
- 45:18Speaker 1: for an hour. You don't have an hour. You're doing
- 45:19Speaker 1: a solid and giving me some time. You're prepared for
- 45:21Speaker 1: your next game. You've coached for many years NFL college.
- 45:26Speaker 1: Who is the offensive player that you would say is
- 45:29Speaker 1: just an absolute freak that you prepare for night and day,
- 45:32Speaker 1: and then they get out there and it's like could
- 45:34Speaker 1: be active, could be current, could be for me, You're
- 45:36Speaker 1: just like, holy crap, there is no answer for when
- 45:39Speaker 1: this guy is on his game.
- 45:40Speaker 3: I mean, there's there's there's some ones that you know.
- 45:43Speaker 3: I go back to Calvin Johnson. We were trying to
- 45:45Speaker 3: get ready for him at when he was at Detroit
- 45:48Speaker 3: and it's like, okay, what do we do? Thank god
- 45:52Speaker 3: I had thank god I had Brent Grimes where he
- 45:54Speaker 3: could like jump through.
- 45:56Speaker 4: And made that great.
- 45:57Speaker 3: I remember that one yeah, great one, but but he
- 46:00Speaker 3: had Brent was hanging all over him on another where
- 46:02Speaker 3: he caught a touchdown on him and he couldn't get
- 46:04Speaker 3: you know, kind of get through to him. But I
- 46:06Speaker 3: mean that from a wide receiver standpoint, he was damn
- 46:10Speaker 3: near impossible. You know, We've got Lamar in our division
- 46:12Speaker 3: that we have to face twice and just to you know,
- 46:15Speaker 3: just a he's the best athlete on the field when
- 46:18Speaker 3: he's out there. But there's there's so many. Those are
- 46:21Speaker 3: the two that come to mind. You know, we're going
- 46:23Speaker 3: to see one in two weeks. You know, the running
- 46:26Speaker 3: back at San Francisco, who's pretty good.
- 46:28Speaker 1: You know, Caffrey's pretty good.
- 46:30Speaker 4: So there's a.
- 46:31Speaker 3: Lot of them, you know, and I'm just fortunate we
- 46:35Speaker 3: can always draw back on some of those great matchups
- 46:37Speaker 3: that we've had to try to help our guys, you know,
- 46:40Speaker 3: get through. And I think, you know, you know, you know,
- 46:44Speaker 3: an example would be Cam Taylor brid from last week.
- 46:47Speaker 4: It's DK and you.
- 46:48Speaker 3: Know, I had showed him some clips of when we
- 46:50Speaker 3: played Julio Jones back in the day, and I said, listen,
- 46:54Speaker 3: you know, here's a size difference, but it doesn't matter
- 46:57Speaker 3: if you play with proper technique and this that.
- 46:58Speaker 1: And the other thing. How's that work? So I love that.
- 47:00Speaker 1: So Camp Taylor Britt second year guy. You know SEC guys,
- 47:04Speaker 1: talent everything. Does he know? Oh who Julio Jones is?
- 47:07Speaker 1: Did he grow up watching Hulo? And you're like, look,
- 47:09Speaker 1: your receiver is DK Metcalf, you know him, But here's
- 47:11Speaker 1: Julio Jones. And here's how you would defend a guy
- 47:13Speaker 1: who's arguably the greatest of his generation. And is he
- 47:16Speaker 1: like all right, I'll go watch tape of Julio Or
- 47:18Speaker 1: is he like get out of here, coach, I'm watching
- 47:20Speaker 1: DK metf or I don't want to deal with it
- 47:21Speaker 1: at all.
- 47:22Speaker 3: No, he's like a sponge. He wants to he wants
- 47:24Speaker 3: to learn and hear everything. I just showed him a
- 47:26Speaker 3: couple of clips when we played him, probably twenty thirteen,
- 47:30Speaker 3: I think it was when he was Atlanta, you know.
- 47:33Speaker 1: At his height of his Grenking shop.
- 47:35Speaker 3: Yeah, and we had a couple of good plays against him. Now,
- 47:39Speaker 3: there was some bad ones I didn't show him, but
- 47:40Speaker 3: of course hi that yeah, yeah, yeah, but he cam
- 47:46Speaker 3: listens to everything. But I just think it's it's great
- 47:48Speaker 3: when you can show former players against great players and
- 47:52Speaker 3: really some of the similar things that we're doing.
- 47:54Speaker 4: Now.
- 47:54Speaker 1: All right, a couple more. Your favorite defensive player in
- 47:58Speaker 1: the history of the sport. You mentioned you were a
- 47:59Speaker 1: fan of LT growing up, but as a mastermind of
- 48:02Speaker 1: defense who has been doing this since nineteen eighty nine
- 48:05Speaker 1: coaching football, who is your prototype? You say, defensive player?
- 48:08Speaker 1: Give me this guy?
- 48:10Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean it's hard not to say LT. I
- 48:12Speaker 3: mean that would be you know, the one.
- 48:14Speaker 4: I mean.
- 48:15Speaker 3: I've been around some great rushers. I'll tell you about
- 48:17Speaker 3: the guys that I've been around, you know. I mean again,
- 48:21Speaker 3: a quiet guy that probably doesn't get as much.
- 48:23Speaker 1: Can I guess? Can I guess who it's going to be?
- 48:25Speaker 1: Go ahead, you're gonna say, Cam, Wake, Wake, Let's go.
- 48:29Speaker 1: Can't wake? His flowers gets no love.
- 48:31Speaker 4: No love the guy.
- 48:32Speaker 3: You know, there's only about thirty some odd guys in
- 48:35Speaker 3: the NFL that have over one hundred sacks in their
- 48:37Speaker 3: career and maybe more now. Last time I checked, it
- 48:39Speaker 3: was in the thirties. I mean thirty guys, ever, and
- 48:42Speaker 3: Cam is one of those.
- 48:43Speaker 4: Now.
- 48:44Speaker 3: Cam used to sit next to me for six years
- 48:46Speaker 3: in the team meeting, so he's my guy. But I've
- 48:49Speaker 3: never seen a guy rush as consistent as Cam and
- 48:54Speaker 3: is as powerful as he was, and how he affected games.
- 48:57Speaker 3: You know, So giving me a guy, I mean.
- 49:00Speaker 2: I.
- 49:03Speaker 1: Get it all right. Last one coolest non football person
- 49:09Speaker 1: that you've got to come across that you've got to
- 49:10Speaker 1: spend time with, whether it be a celebrity, legendary leader,
- 49:15Speaker 1: someone in the business world that this career has led
- 49:18Speaker 1: to where hey, I got the opportunity to meet this
- 49:20Speaker 1: person as well.
- 49:23Speaker 4: Yeah, let's see.
- 49:24Speaker 3: So I would say, you know, just some of my
- 49:27Speaker 3: Harvard buddies that I used to coach are now very
- 49:31Speaker 3: prominent people around the in the business world and other things.
- 49:34Speaker 3: So Jase Snowden, who's the CEO of Penn Gaming. Jay
- 49:40Speaker 3: and I played some golf this summer and he introduced
- 49:43Speaker 3: me to a few people. But when you're around, when
- 49:45Speaker 3: you're around guys like that and the and the reach
- 49:48Speaker 3: that they have and the way they talk about the
- 49:51Speaker 3: people that they talk about, it's pretty cool. And just
- 49:53Speaker 3: listening to how a guy like.
- 49:55Speaker 1: That how build a company is how.
- 49:59Speaker 3: They build a company, how they manage their employees, how
- 50:02Speaker 3: all of that And not only do we play golf,
- 50:05Speaker 3: but you know, you just s in there and we're
- 50:07Speaker 3: going back and forth because when I was coaching him,
- 50:09Speaker 3: it was probably about a six year age difference.
- 50:11Speaker 1: I don't know six eight What position was he in college?
- 50:14Speaker 3: Jay was a quarterback that we turned into it I
- 50:17Speaker 3: wanted as a safety.
- 50:18Speaker 4: In his last two years he played safety for me.
- 50:20Speaker 1: And he ends up selling Penn Gaming or the rights
- 50:23Speaker 1: to pend At to ESPN for about a billion dollars.
- 50:26Speaker 1: Like last week or something that's not.
- 50:27Speaker 4: Bad, No, not a bad day at the office.
- 50:29Speaker 3: Yeah, when I asked him, like, you come into the
- 50:32Speaker 3: game this week, I don't want to hear any you
- 50:34Speaker 3: know bs. You can't you know, can't get a flight?
- 50:39Speaker 1: Yeah? Who else? I love this? You go down these
- 50:41Speaker 1: Harvard walls, You're probably having all sorts of different people.
- 50:44Speaker 1: I love this, this image of you as a football
- 50:46Speaker 1: coach of all these guys.
- 50:47Speaker 4: Well, we had I tell you what we did have.
- 50:51Speaker 3: Warren Buffett walked through the halls of the Miami Dolphin facility.
- 50:55Speaker 1: Do we have a coke? Was he drinking? The story
- 50:58Speaker 1: is he has every day he starts with a coke.
- 51:00Speaker 1: I think I bet you he's not drinking coke.
- 51:02Speaker 3: I didn't do that, But this is not like I'm
- 51:05Speaker 3: not telling any he was in pregame?
- 51:08Speaker 1: Is any friends with Sue? Is that what it was? Like?
- 51:10Speaker 3: Him? A sewer boys, So he was in pregame with
- 51:15Speaker 3: shoulder pads and.
- 51:19Speaker 4: Go find the tape.
- 51:20Speaker 1: It's out there, some Warren Buffett wearing shoulder pads and
- 51:26Speaker 1: a helmet and h and Domkin Sue Jersey after Mike
- 51:30Speaker 1: Tannebaum just signed Sue for the biggest contract of all time.
- 51:33Speaker 4: Yes, sir, yes, sir.
- 51:37Speaker 1: Do you ask Buffett anything? Are you just kind of
- 51:39Speaker 1: sheepishly nod your.
- 51:40Speaker 4: Head like is that really? What is am I dreaming?
- 51:43Speaker 1: Like?
- 51:43Speaker 3: What is going on right now? As we're getting ready
- 51:46Speaker 3: to play somebody, I'm like, is that really warm? Buffett
- 51:48Speaker 3: in a in a Halloween costume essentially?
- 51:51Speaker 1: And it was all right. My last one is very
- 51:54Speaker 1: personal to you. Saturday Night Fever is a movie from
- 51:56Speaker 1: the seventies. Anyone who knows anything immediately it says about
- 52:00Speaker 1: Staten Island all like Saturay Night Fever. You had to
- 52:02Speaker 1: answer those questions your entire childhood, I'm sure, right through
- 52:05Speaker 1: college and right through the pros. It's kind of a
- 52:06Speaker 1: dated reference now. I think Staten Island's having a little
- 52:09Speaker 1: resurgence right now. You got you doing this at the
- 52:12Speaker 1: NFL level. You got Pete Davidson, you got Colin Jokes,
- 52:15Speaker 1: you got the impractical jokers. I feel like Staten Island's
- 52:18Speaker 1: having a moment. How proud are you of Staten Island?
- 52:21Speaker 1: And take this moment here to tell all those Manhattan
- 52:23Speaker 1: snobs that, you know what, You're not the only show
- 52:25Speaker 1: in town.
- 52:26Speaker 4: Yeah, no doubt.
- 52:27Speaker 3: We've always felt like the forgotten borough. When I tell
- 52:29Speaker 3: people that I'm from New York City, they will where
- 52:33Speaker 3: I'm like, well, Staten Island.
- 52:34Speaker 4: They're like, no, no, no, it's not New York. No, I
- 52:36Speaker 4: said it is.
- 52:37Speaker 3: There's five boroughs and we're one of them. But no,
- 52:40Speaker 3: I you know, I love growing up there. It's part
- 52:43Speaker 3: of again who I am and what you know, I'll
- 52:46Speaker 3: never forget. I was going to probably fifth or sixth grade,
- 52:50Speaker 3: standing on a city bus, waiting for the city bus
- 52:53Speaker 3: to go, and you know, you're getting on that bus
- 52:55Speaker 3: with all types of different people, and it's that's one scenario.
- 52:59Speaker 3: But that's made me who I am today, and I
- 53:01Speaker 3: wouldn't want to grow grown up anywhere else around. I
- 53:04Speaker 3: still have great friends from there, and you know, most
- 53:07Speaker 3: of my family lives there still, and you know, I
- 53:12Speaker 3: go right back to Donino's Pizza every time I go.
- 53:14Speaker 1: Come on, talk about it, Danino's Pizza. Were you a
- 53:18Speaker 1: faery guy into the city or do you take the verizontal.
- 53:20Speaker 3: Bridge more the more? The bridge ferry every now and again?
- 53:24Speaker 3: But uh uh yeah, I was more of a more
- 53:27Speaker 3: of a go over the arizonta.
- 53:29Speaker 1: Okay, are you into the Impractical Jokers? Do you know
- 53:31Speaker 1: their work?
- 53:32Speaker 4: So I do. I watched them. They're funny.
- 53:35Speaker 3: My son when I went to the Giants, he transferred
- 53:39Speaker 3: to from Saint Thomas Aquinas down in Fort Lauderdale to Farrell,
- 53:42Speaker 3: my senior Farrell and my brother in law went to college.
- 53:46Speaker 3: I went to Farrell, I guess at the same time
- 53:48Speaker 3: when those guys were there. So, uh, funny story. A
- 53:52Speaker 3: bunch of Farrell guys came to this past game against
- 53:56Speaker 3: the Seahawks.
- 53:57Speaker 1: Yeah really yeah.
- 53:58Speaker 3: They were wearing Farrell pullovers and they got asked like
- 54:03Speaker 3: five six times like, hey, is it that where the
- 54:05Speaker 3: Impractical Jokers are from?
- 54:06Speaker 4: So there you go.
- 54:07Speaker 3: But yeah, we've got we're getting a little bit of
- 54:09Speaker 3: a name for ourselves for sure.
- 54:10Speaker 1: I love it, dude, Thank you and the Bengals have
- 54:12Speaker 1: a name from how's that transition? The Bengals are making
- 54:14Speaker 1: a name for themselves. You guys are already well on
- 54:16Speaker 1: the scene. You know my feelings felt. You've seen me
- 54:19Speaker 1: talk about you on TV, but also just in our interactions.
- 54:21Speaker 1: I think you're the best of the best, and it
- 54:23Speaker 1: means so much to me that you would come on
- 54:25Speaker 1: the podcast and from the Merchant Marine Academy to now
- 54:28Speaker 1: the top of the game in the NFL. It's been
- 54:30Speaker 1: a pretty cool story, dude.
- 54:32Speaker 4: I really appreciate it.
- 54:33Speaker 3: Appreciate you having me and uh, we're just looking forward
- 54:35Speaker 3: to keep this thing rolling.
- 54:36Speaker 4: Man, I appreciate it.
- 54:38Speaker 1: That's the approach, guys. Lou Amo defensive coordinator of the
- 54:40Speaker 1: Bengals and a head coach of your team in the
- 54:43Speaker 1: next couple of years. We appreciate you coming on, man.
- 54:45Speaker 1: Thanks thank you Aaron coach Louena Rumo. I feel like
- 54:48Speaker 1: these guys come on and you walk away, You're like,
- 54:50Speaker 1: all right, hire them for my head coaching job. I
- 54:51Speaker 1: don't know how Arizona walked out of that meeting. It
- 54:54Speaker 1: wasn't like, yes that guy now, Agan, It's been great,
- 54:56Speaker 1: But I love lou and I think his unit always
- 54:59Speaker 1: ends up playing well, and that's with a rotating bunch
- 55:02Speaker 1: of names at that defensive back position, which is not
- 55:05Speaker 1: an easy position to fill, especially with young guys in
- 55:06Speaker 1: that conference.
- 55:07Speaker 2: Yeah, and like he was saying, I mean, they don't
- 55:10Speaker 2: have a big star, they don't have Aaron Donald. They
- 55:13Speaker 2: just have a group of guys that are all great
- 55:15Speaker 2: and working together. And that's one of the things that
- 55:18Speaker 2: makes that defense so frustrating to have to play against.
- 55:21Speaker 1: Twenty fifteen Dolphins. Joe Fildman is fired midway through the
- 55:24Speaker 1: season after they go to Europe or they go to London.
- 55:26Speaker 1: Come back. Dan Campbell, the tight ends coach, is interim coach.
- 55:30Speaker 1: Ben Johnson is now the tight ends coach, Ben Johnson,
- 55:32Speaker 1: who's now the innovator in Detroit. Zach Taylor is the
- 55:35Speaker 1: offensive coordinator, and lou Ana Roumos a defensive coordinator. I
- 55:38Speaker 1: did not know that until this interviewer. That is fascinating.
- 55:41Speaker 1: It's a deep dive. We I mean, I love that stuff.
- 55:43Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I like the vague memories of when Dan
- 55:47Speaker 2: Campbell took over are not something that is that I
- 55:50Speaker 2: would be able to recall if I were on a
- 55:52Speaker 2: Jeopardy game.
- 55:53Speaker 1: It would not come up for me unfortunately, so it
- 55:56Speaker 1: all goes back to jeopardy. Anyway. Thanks to coach Lou
- 55:59Speaker 1: Bengals are always going to be in the mix. Even
- 56:01Speaker 1: when they were zero and two or one and two,
- 56:02Speaker 1: it was like, they're gonna be players when it matters more.
- 56:06Speaker 1: If Burrow's calf is healthy, they'll be in there. And
- 56:09Speaker 1: then of course they rattle off too in a row
- 56:10Speaker 1: against two good teams. That's where they are now. We
- 56:14Speaker 1: love to give love to those who love us. It's
- 56:17Speaker 1: time for delivering results. Presented by Uber Eats. I'm gonna
- 56:21Speaker 1: discuss a team or a player that delivered from this
- 56:23Speaker 1: week's games. And you know who I'm going with right now.
- 56:27Speaker 1: I'm going with the New York Jets, and I'm going
- 56:31Speaker 1: specifically with the New York Jets defense, which stepped it
- 56:34Speaker 1: up despite not having DJ Reid or Sauce Gardner, Guys
- 56:38Speaker 1: like Jordan Whitehead making huge plays, and then in the
- 56:41Speaker 1: biggest moment, Tony Adams. Tony Adams, an undrafted free agent
- 56:46Speaker 1: out of Illinois in his second year playing safety, having
- 56:49Speaker 1: to move all around tuk to Robert Sala, he said
- 56:52Speaker 1: they had only four active dressed cornerbacks for this game
- 56:56Speaker 1: against an Eagles offense that had been lighting up the league.
- 56:59Speaker 1: They go into battle and they find a way. Both
- 57:02Speaker 1: Williams Brothers, Quincy and Quinn fantastic. CJ. Mosley all over
- 57:06Speaker 1: the field, Jermaine Johnson looking like a first round pick.
- 57:09Speaker 1: Defensive coordinator Jeff Olbrich, the New York Jets defense for
- 57:14Speaker 1: finding a way to get the key turnovers when needed,
- 57:18Speaker 1: intercepting Jalen Hurts three times and giving the Jets just
- 57:21Speaker 1: enough chance to go and get that win Sunday against
- 57:25Speaker 1: the Eagles. They are the recipients of the Delivering Results
- 57:29Speaker 1: Award presented by Uber Eats that was Delivering Results presented

- 58:16Speaker 1: a single question about Waterloo. And I was ready, dude,
- 58:19Speaker 1: I was so ready. This is another episode of the
- 58:23Speaker 1: season with Peter Schrager. Many thanks to you, Aaron wan Kaufman,

- 58:33Speaker 1: We're doing this. I jokingly said that we're trying to
- 58:36Speaker 1: get to Las Vegas and the super Bowl. Take the
- 58:38Speaker 1: jokingly aside. If we want to get a go fun
- 58:40Speaker 1: me prage, we need to get to super Bowl. Let's
- 58:42Speaker 1: go for it. Let's make it happen. Let's bring this
- 58:45Speaker 1: thing on the road. Let's see what we can do.
- 58:47Speaker 1: Meredith Batton who stopped by today, she's our mastermind out
