Transcript
- 0:00Hour number two, Miller and Condon welcome back.
- 0:02Iowa Sports Radio Network still to come in this next hour, Scott
- 0:07Dockerman from the Athletic on college football and on Iowa.
- 0:11Their depth chart for the Albany A game has been released.
- 0:15We'll get into that. Trent will make some pick circus
- 0:18sports sponsor those. But as the sound tells you, it's
- 0:21time to talk baseball and we do so with our friend Matt Snyder
- 0:24from CBSSports.com. Matt Trenton, Ken, thank you for
- 0:28giving us this segment. We appreciate it as always.
- 0:31How was your week, Matt Snyder? Pretty good overall.
- 0:36And look, football's right around the corner.
- 0:38So yeah, really, fall, fall might be.
- 0:41This is probably a whole different discussion than you
- 0:43wanted, but it might be my favorite time of the year for
- 0:47sports. October, the middle of the NFL
- 0:49season with the baseball playoffs.
- 0:51Yeah. Yeah, conference.
- 0:53We're into conference play instead of Iowa versus Albany.
- 0:57I'm going to pound that this week, John.
- 0:58I just thought. And Mets, Hoosiers, yeah, they
- 1:02they have a different kind of non schedule over there that's.
- 1:04Fair. They like they'd like to get
- 1:05Albany on their schedule. Anyways, let's talk baseball
- 1:09with you. But I agree, October for me is
- 1:11far and away the best month on the sports calendar.
- 1:13But because we'll be playing for World Series of Playoff
- 1:16Baseball, and I guess I want to start with your thoughts that we
- 1:20have a race in the wild card for that final wild card bid.
- 1:24And I think you're probably right, as surprised as I am that
- 1:27the Reds are hanging around. The Reds are hanging around
- 1:29Matt. Yeah, I mean, they haven't they
- 1:33they lost three in a row last week when the Mets were like
- 1:36desperately trying to let the Reds take the spot over.
- 1:39But it's cool that it's close because for so long it just felt
- 1:44like these are the six playoff teams.
- 1:46Yep. And the national side, like
- 1:48where there's there's no shaking any of these sticks out.
- 1:51But then the Mets kind of really, really hit the skids and
- 1:54the Reds played decent to good baseball for for a little bit
- 1:57there. So they're hanging around, you
- 2:00know, there, there is a head to head between them coming up, I
- 2:04believe. Let me see really fast.
- 2:08It's yeah, September 5th or 7th, that's at red.
- 2:12So if it's still that close, that will be really, really fun.
- 2:18And this Cincinnati team, if they would get in, am I crazy to
- 2:22think that they're dangerous? And we know it's stacked.
- 2:24I mean, you got the Dodgers and the Phillies and what the
- 2:26Brewers are and the top end talent of the Cubs.
- 2:28It's stacked. However, I maybe, I don't know,
- 2:31maybe I'm just hoping that Cincinnati finally get good, a
- 2:34good baseball team again. Do you think that they'd have
- 2:37their short series? Anything could happen.
- 2:39Are they a live dog? Cincinnati if they would get in.
- 2:42The easiest, you know, the easiest thing to look at is
- 2:45what's the playoff look rotation look like?
- 2:47And I assume that's where you're coming from because you've got
- 2:50hunter green bonafide ace Andrew Abbott having an outstanding
- 2:53year. And then if you get like Nicola
- 2:56Dolo, if he's healthy and he's throwing, well, that's a pretty
- 2:59darn good #3 for the playoffs. So, yeah, I, I from that aspect,
- 3:05it does seem like they could be dangerous.
- 3:06I just worry about some of the bullpen pieces and the offense
- 3:11is just so inconsistent. You can see them easily losing
- 3:14like 2-1 to nothing games in the wild card round and then just
- 3:18having that be it. But yeah, if they, you know,
- 3:22especially because if you look at the offensive side, you've
- 3:24got a superstar in Ellie De La Cruz.
- 3:27They do run. It's not just Ellie.
- 3:29They steal bases. They have a little bit of power
- 3:32up and down the line up. So yeah, you can see them
- 3:34getting locked in. I just the offense, this isn't
- 3:37that scary to me. But yeah, when you start with a
- 3:40playoff rotation like that with Green, Abbott, Ladolo, of course
- 3:44you can make it deeper. On, I mean, assuming they're
- 3:45able to set it like that, right, they also blow one of those guys
- 3:48on. Yeah, because it'll, it probably
- 3:50will go will go down to the wire where they would have to, you
- 3:53know, pitch their best guys in the last weekend of the season,
- 3:56then there's no time off. So yeah, that that's the other
- 3:59consideration. So along those lines, Franco's
- 4:03done a remarkable job. He has Murphy's going to be
- 4:05tough to knock off. But Thompson and Philly maybe
- 4:09Shilt in San Diego, You, you can't throw Roberts in there.
- 4:12He's imagine the Dodgers, they're supposed to win 110
- 4:15games. Who's the manager of the year in
- 4:17the National League? It's got to be one of those 3.
- 4:20Is it Murphy? I think it has to be Murphy
- 4:23again. I don't see that much of an
- 4:25opening anywhere else. And it's interesting, somebody
- 4:28asked me a few weeks ago, I wish I could remember who, but said
- 4:30has anybody ever won manager of the year 2 years in a row?
- 4:32And I, I did not look it up. My guess is that hardly ever, if
- 4:37ever happens because the way that the award is set up, it's
- 4:41you're you are the team that defies expectations the most for
- 4:45that to happen two years in a row, it's really doesn't happen
- 4:48because if a team usually if they win their division last
- 4:51year, then the manager probably doesn't have a chance to manager
- 4:54of the year the next year because everybody thought, well,
- 4:56they just won their division last year.
- 4:58But the Brewers are playing so far and above what everybody
- 5:00thought their stealing was. I do think he's going to win it
- 5:04again. So that that's something I'm
- 5:06going to have to follow up and check that out.
- 5:07But my hunch is it's hardly ever happened, if ever.
- 5:11Matt Snyder joining us as we take a look around Major League
- 5:13Baseball. Let's get into the Cubs.
- 5:16It boy, that momentum. What happened on Tuesday into
- 5:19Wednesday, 3 game-winning streak.
- 5:21And then I know the lineup frustrated people on Thursday.
- 5:25You got just so many different directions that you can go with
- 5:28this. This Cubs team, they're still
- 5:30hanging around though, is it a stretch?
- 5:32I mean, is there a real path in your mind for them to chase down
- 5:35the Brewers and win this division and and with it
- 5:37potentially put themselves in position for one of the top 2
- 5:40seeds or even maybe the number one overall seed in the NL
- 5:43playoffs? Yeah, I had a major just when I
- 5:47thought I was out, they pulled me back in over the weekend
- 5:50because I had made-up my mind going to that Brewer series.
- 5:53Unless the Cubs sweep them in five games, which would have
- 5:56been absurd. Then the division's over and I
- 5:58did not think about it. I need to just look at the wild
- 6:00card. But now the Brewers have lost
- 6:03six out of nine, and it does seem like they were due
- 6:06regression. They were playing way, way, way
- 6:07too good for any any team. They were playing too well.
- 6:10And you know that regression is coming.
- 6:12Sure enough, they lose a home series to the Giants.
- 6:15They have a much more difficult schedule than the Cubs the rest
- 6:17of the way. The Cubs have one of the easiest
- 6:20schedules and all of baseball remaining.
- 6:21The only two teams the Cubs play that have a winning record the
- 6:24rest of the way are the Mets and the Reds.
- 6:26And they're not like among the elite teams in baseball or
- 6:29anything like that. So the Cubs have a really easy
- 6:31road, 5 games. I usually say like one game a
- 6:34week is workable, 5 games in five weeks and the Cubs have the
- 6:38tiebreaker. So it's basically like 4.
- 6:42I think it's possible, I really do.
- 6:45And four days ago I thought there was no way.
- 6:48So it's funny how that can happen in the marathon that is a
- 6:51baseball season. Things are setting up decently
- 6:54for the Cubs. And while the Brewers were due
- 6:56regression, the Cubs were due positive regression, too.
- 6:59Like you knew Tucker wasn't going to be this bad for this
- 7:02long. He knew, I assume at least stay
- 7:04at Suzuki is going to bounce back and finish strong.
- 7:06I assume Pete Crow Armstrong last week was probably the start
- 7:10of him starting to turn it back around and get hot again.
- 7:12So, you know, it kind of looks like things are turning again.
- 7:17I I don't know how to look this up.
- 7:19It would take a long time, but I can't imagine we've seen it
- 7:23much, if ever, where a team had a 6 1/2 game lead and then
- 7:26trailed by 10 games and then still won the division.
- 7:30And, and you gotta give the farm system credit too, right?
- 7:32I mean, Kate Horton, he's now the favorite in DraftKings to be
- 7:36the NL Rookie of the Year. Matt Shaw's been unbelievable
- 7:39since he really has. Yeah.
- 7:41We're salivating for Owen. Casey.
- 7:43Casey. Gave him a.
- 7:44Boost. Yes, Yeah.
- 7:45The farm system has been unbelievable.
- 7:47So let's let's go to the let's go to the West because the
- 7:51Dodgers really needed that one yesterday.
- 7:53They really did to to at least get one from that series.
- 7:57Is there much between these two? We know the Padres don't flinch
- 8:00when they play the Dodgers. That's a given.
- 8:02That's that's a certainty. But do you believe that these
- 8:05two teams are on equal footing as their record this far into
- 8:08the standings says they are? I still think the Dodgers are
- 8:12better. But here's the thing, we since
- 8:14the Dodgers started 8, no, they're not a ton better than
- 8:17500. So I mean, the Potters have been
- 8:22doing this long enough. They're trading blow, blow for
- 8:25blow with the Dodgers standing toe to toe with them.
- 8:29Dodgers have not been that good since early July.
- 8:31They've actually been under 500 since early July.
- 8:34And I think the Padres have a little bit of a swagger to them,
- 8:37especially since the trade deadline where every year AJ
- 8:40Peller goes out and he does things that people think are
- 8:43reckless, like trading a top prospect for a reliever.
- 8:45People go crazy about it. But in that clubhouse, it has to
- 8:49fire those players to know that they have a general manager
- 8:52who's going to do whatever it takes to make them better right
- 8:54now. And there are a lot of teams who
- 8:56did not do that this year, of several, several major
- 9:00contenders who didn't do that. But the Padres went out and
- 9:02flung for the fences. I I still think the Dodgers are
- 9:06going to win it, but I hope I'm wrong because that'd be really
- 9:09cool if the Padres won the division after we spent the
- 9:11entire offseason listening to everybody talk about how it was
- 9:14no fair and the Dodgers were too good.
- 9:16We saw last week the Cubs shut down Kyle Tucker for a couple
- 9:19days and maybe it worked. Yankees are trying to do the
- 9:22same thing with Anthony Volpe as.
- 9:24He's brutal. And.
- 9:27God. It's one of those things where
- 9:28maybe I mean, like, I guess it kind of worked with Tucker.
- 9:31So you could say, all right, it can work here.
- 9:33But this Yankees team as a whole, this is not just a Volpe
- 9:36problem. This is just defense fielders
- 9:38position. It's the whole team.
- 9:41You you. You see catchers throwing the
- 9:42ball into center field on steel attempts.
- 9:44I can't remember a good baseball team as awful as this one
- 9:48defensively. That's a great point.
- 9:49There were a couple throws over the weekend.
- 9:52One was Jazz where he threw it. I mean, it was like double the
- 9:55first baseman's height. And the other one was Volpe.
- 9:57Was it yesterday or Saturday? Whatever.
- 9:59Saturday. They benched him yesterday,
- 10:01yeah. So much so high over the the
- 10:03head of the first baseman, but the the worst play.
- 10:07This is a team, this is a theme and we saw in the World Series,
- 10:10we saw them blow. Game 5 was sloppy defense.
- 10:13It's it's been a theme for a long time.
- 10:15And and and it seems like Aaron Boone at some point you're the
- 10:19boss on field operations. You're the boss.
- 10:22Why is the team not, you know, just more tight and tighten
- 10:27things up, man, Let's go get it together.
- 10:30The play. That sums it up for me.
- 10:32You know, in the World Series it was Gerrit Cole not covering
- 10:34first, but this past weekend it was when Volpe threw that ball
- 10:38to second base. I I don't even understand, you
- 10:41know, just take the out, take the out at first base trying to
- 10:45be hero. And then Aaron Boone comments
- 10:47post game. He was like, oh, I thought it
- 10:48was a heady play. You know, he almost caught him,
- 10:50but he didn't almost doesn't matter.
- 10:53It's not a heady play. If you didn't catch him, almost
- 10:56doesn't count. I think the problem starts with
- 10:59Boone. But yeah, it's it seems like
- 11:02they're definitely going to make the playoffs.
- 11:04But man, it sure seems like their exit is going to be
- 11:06similar to last year where there's just a ton of sloppiness
- 11:09and it cost them the season. Miller and Khan is official
- 11:11researcher, has program researcher, the baseball.
- 11:14Benny tells us Bobby Cox 2004 and five, and Kevin Cash, 2020
- 11:19and 21 with the Rays. I could see both of those guys.
- 11:23By the way, do you see the picture of Bobby Cox?
- 11:25I guess they celebrated one of the Braves teams in the 90s.
- 11:29Boy, he's old. I mean, yeah, Father Time
- 11:32catches up with Everybody was sad this evening.
- 11:35It really was. All right, so let's talk about
- 11:37my Jays. Do you mind all?
- 11:38Right, let's do. It I hate to bring them up
- 11:40because they don't move the needle here, but they are in
- 11:42first place and they do look like a playoff team.
- 11:45They're going to be a playoff team and I think they're
- 11:47probably going to win the division.
- 11:48How far can this team go? Are they a legit threat to win
- 11:52the American League in your mind, Matt?
- 11:55Absolutely. They're they're a threat to win
- 11:56the World Series. Look, it's funny, we've talked
- 11:59about so many times how wide open the American League.
- 12:03I do think right now the Tigers and Blue Jays have separated
- 12:06themselves and, and you can say or somebody like the Red Sox or
- 12:10Yankees or Astros or Mariners, like I'm no longer going to say,
- 12:13oh, the American League is wide open.
- 12:16Well, you're going to have to go through either Detroit or
- 12:18Toronto or both. And those are not going to be
- 12:20easy. Both bona fide legitimate World
- 12:24Series contenders. And if you get there, of course
- 12:26you can win it all. Did you see Bieber?
- 12:29I was just going to say I love the Bieber acquisition at the
- 12:32time. Just to like that kind of a wild
- 12:36card. Who is not going to run out of
- 12:38bullets this season season because he's hardly going to
- 12:40have pitched at all and he can be at playoffs ace.
- 12:43Sure enough, 9 strikeouts, zero walks.
- 12:46OK, are you kidding me that the Guardian stole him in front of
- 12:49the trade deadline? I mean that's just awful.
- 12:51But hey, worked out well for the Blue Jays because now you can
- 12:55start to envision what a playoff rotation and I tell you what,
- 12:59Scherzer 2.25 VRA last six start between Deber and Scherzer and
- 13:05what they've already got. And like Barrios, Gossman,
- 13:09Bassett, maybe it just, I don't think they're going to have a
- 13:11problem figuring out the playoff rotation and having it look good
- 13:14no matter which way they go. And with that offense, did it
- 13:19it's, I mean, it's we're going to see one of their best playoff
- 13:22teams in a long time. I don't trust Hoffman.
- 13:24The closer. Yeah, well.
- 13:26Anyways, and that part that is a problem, but it's.
- 13:29A good problem to have I guess. What What does that rotation
- 13:32look like then? Let's.
- 13:33Hoffman, Bieber, Scherzer. Big, Big Three.
- 13:35And then? And then, is it Lauer?
- 13:37Is he here? For he's.
- 13:38No, he's not even in the state. They kicked him out when Bieber
- 13:40came back. They did.
- 13:41He's their 6 now. He's been tremendous.
- 13:44Barrios, probably. Yuck.
- 13:46Yeah. I would take Lauer personally,
- 13:47but I'm not running things up. Before you don't even.
- 13:52And there there's the other thing.
- 13:53They have so many starters that you can kick a starter to to the
- 13:56bullpen. Remember the Rangers when they
- 13:59won the World Series, they would do something like throw Andrew
- 14:02Haney like 3 innings and then go to was it Dane, Dane Dunning?
- 14:08They would do like basically 2 starters who only threw 3
- 14:11innings each instead of like 1 full on starter.
- 14:14So you could do something like various one time through the
- 14:17order and then get 3 innings from another starter and relief.
- 14:21When you have that kind of depth, that's what you can do.
- 14:24Royals over the weekend dropped two out of three.
- 14:26Had to get that. Wrong time.
- 14:29Wrong time to do it. Yep.
- 14:30They're still alive, though. I, I like this team.
- 14:32I, I like the makeup and, and Franco, what he's been able to
- 14:35do for what the last two months and obviously what you have with
- 14:38Bobby Witt junior. What kind of odds would I have
- 14:41to give you, though? We know there's a betting market
- 14:43out there, but what kind of odds that the Royals chase down
- 14:46either the Yankees or the Mariners and get in the
- 14:47playoffs? I mean, it's +500 or so.
- 14:55I mean, it's not outrageous or anything.
- 14:58There's three games out and they've they've learned how to
- 15:00hit. They were so bad offensively for
- 15:02the first half of the year at home.
- 15:04Even Bobby Witt junior wasn't really hitting for power, but
- 15:07now he's hitting for power again.
- 15:08Vinny Pasquantino has ten home runs this month.
- 15:13You'd like the rotation to be a little bit healthier.
- 15:16But overall they look pretty good.
- 15:18Not great or anything, but they look good.
- 15:19And we've seen stuff like the the Tigers make that wild run
- 15:23down the hills last season. So it's I haven't looked at
- 15:27their schedule, but like if they're heavy on AL Central
- 15:30teams down the stretch because the Guardians are terrible right
- 15:33now, the Twins are terrible right now.
- 15:34The White Sox or the White Sox, Like if the Royals have a lot of
- 15:37those left, they could be. They can.
- 15:40So yeah, I think it's possible. I still think the most likely
- 15:43scenario is those six teams in the American League stay the six
- 15:46playoff teams, even if they jumble up on seeding.
- 15:49But I could definitely see the Royals sneaking in there.
- 15:51Yeah, the wild card. I mean, I think the teams are
- 15:53set, I'm with you. But the positioning?
- 15:55Far from it, no doubt. About it, yeah, yeah, there's
- 15:57going to be a lot of shuffle in there, even like the the mayors
- 16:01have a chance at the AL West. Yankees and Red Sox are going to
- 16:04Duke it out some depending on where they're going to be,
- 16:06either 3-4 or four 5 or 6. It's going to be fun.
- 16:11Did you see? And I'm, I wanted to bring this
- 16:13up with you because I know you're a Cubs fan.
- 16:15Did you see Kyle Hendricks either Friday or Saturday, meet
- 16:18the media before his start yesterday?
- 16:21I mean, whatever, whatever remarkable a human being and how
- 16:24much he loved you. Love when you see players are
- 16:27making a lot of money that just appreciate the opportunity.
- 16:30I'm sure a lot of them do, but some of them don't.
- 16:34And Kyle Hendricks clearly love putting on that Cub uniform.
- 16:38Yes, absolutely. Well, and you can just juxtapose
- 16:40that against an Angels teammate. Yeah, people might have forgot
- 16:44because he's never there, but Anthony Rendon is 1, takes
- 16:46everything for granted and doesn't care.
- 16:49Hendrix is the opposite of that. He's as good a guy as there is
- 16:52in the game. This might be it.
- 16:55I mean the ER as of 5 right now at 35 years old, but it was a
- 16:59heck of a run. It was a a short run in his
- 17:02prime, but he was so good in his prime. 3rd place die unfinished.
- 17:06One of the better pitchers for a five year period.
- 17:08Did not make the All Star team. Like it's when you picture Kyle
- 17:13Hendricks, you picture oh, he's probably a one or two time All
- 17:15Star. Nope, never made it.
- 17:16And next kind. Of stocks, because I wish he
- 17:19would have made it at least in like 2016 when he led the majors
- 17:22in the ERA. But hey, World Series champion,
- 17:25made a lot of money, had a lot of fun.
- 17:27Every teammate thinks he's the best teammate ever.
- 17:30That's quite an admirable career.
- 17:32Indeed it is. Matt Snyder football season is
- 17:35here. We will speak with you Tuesdays
- 17:36going forward if your schedule allows.
- 17:38Gosh, we hope it does. Thank you, buddy.
- 17:41We'll talk to you next Tuesday. Enjoy Labour Day weekend and
- 17:44enjoy the week of baseball. Thank you bud.
- 17:47All right, take care. Good to talk to you Matt Snyder,
- 17:49CBSSports.com, as we talk baseball with Matt Snyder.
- 17:52Good segment. All right, Scott Dockerman joins
- 17:55us when we come back from the athletic college football
- 17:58conversation. Back Miller and Condon talking

- 18:23He writes for the Athletic and Band.
- 18:24You were busy last week, Doc ton of content teaming up with a
- 18:28couple of colleagues of yours and some of your pieces, but you
- 18:32had a busy week. Scott Dockerman, how are you?
- 18:35It's good. It's football season, isn't it?
- 18:37Yeah. It's like everything culminated
- 18:40into this weekend. You know, a couple of financial
- 18:43pieces. I took kind of the the lion's
- 18:45share of 1 and then broke another one on my own and and
- 18:49then some other ones, Whether it's bowl projection or a
- 18:52hypothetical 16 team Jamboree between the Big 10 and SEC and,
- 18:58you know, and then Farmageddon stuff.
- 18:59So yeah, it's it was a quite the busy week I had.
- 19:03The financial component, so you looked under the hood a number
- 19:07of different universities, different backgrounds.
- 19:10And the one thing that jumped out, of course, as revenue
- 19:14continues to increase, so did the spending.
- 19:16But that was also kind of the old world.
- 19:18And you want to have those books as balanced as possible because,
- 19:21well, you didn't be running and and making money in the endeavor
- 19:24of college athletics. You know, in today's day and
- 19:26age, is that still what they're looking to do and cook in the
- 19:30books, if you will? How different is that going to
- 19:32look today as compared to, say, 10 years ago?
- 19:36As far as you know, I mean, money is money.
- 19:38So that is the most important thing that we're talking about
- 19:41here in sports. I mean, you know, when you know,
- 19:44only one team wins national titles, but everybody wants to
- 19:47win at the cash register. And so that's really what we're
- 19:51talking about as far as the importance.
- 19:53It's I think what I found most intriguing about this whole
- 19:58process is you know, that the the trajectories have been
- 20:02comparable. Pretty much what they get is
- 20:04what they spend. That's something that you kind
- 20:07of know because you're dealing with a government agency that's
- 20:10somewhat of a nonprofit. It's kind of a hybrid of that
- 20:13that enables them to spend most of what they get and then raise
- 20:16a lot of money and spend a lot of money, go along with it.
- 20:19But but I think the most fascinating thing is what's the
- 20:22next step? What can these?
- 20:25Athletic departments due to keep up with their own ambitions and
- 20:30their neighbors. And I think what, you know, Ross
- 20:33Bjork kind of had talked about the Ohio State Adi think was
- 20:37most fascinating to me is it's it's about leaning into your
- 20:40assets because these universities create a lot of
- 20:45memories for a lot of people as we saw, you know, for Iowa State
- 20:48fans this weekend. I mean this lifelong memory that
- 20:50they created, but how do you lean into that, monetize it and
- 20:56keep it at the forefront and continue it?
- 20:58That's going to be the challenge for these universities and
- 21:01athletic departments that traditionally have farmed those
- 21:03responsibilities out to Learfield and other entities.
- 21:07Now they're going to find ways to reclaim that money to
- 21:09themselves. Duke Slater Field is now going
- 21:12to show up in the end zone. Did that get a lot of pushback?
- 21:14I personally do what you got to do is kind of all I see it.
- 21:18But did you see pushback on that doc that this is not a good
- 21:22idea? Idea.
- 21:22What are we doing here, Iowa? I didn't.
- 21:25A little was there kind of some a little bit of high mindedness
- 21:29that typically happens with universities, but not much.
- 21:32I mean, it is kind of a new concept.
- 21:34It'd be different if they were to rename Kinnick or something
- 21:37like that. You know, Duke Slater Field is
- 21:41what, four or five years old now?
- 21:42I think it's 2021 is when when it was implemented and and I
- 21:46think moving the name of it to a different location isn't that
- 21:49big of a deal as long as they didn't strip the name of it.
- 21:52But but those are opportunities that you can get and now all of
- 21:56them are now paying as we know 20.5 million this year for
- 21:59athletes and next year that's number is going to go up.
- 22:02So they want to find ways to grow that revenue, but but it's
- 22:06also something that I think that they can in the future that you
- 22:11got to, you know, it's an easy excuse too.
- 22:14You know, here's a $20 million expenditure.
- 22:16We didn't plan on whether all these this money has grown at
- 22:19such a rate that this is actually, you know, when you're
- 22:22talking about $170 million budget, I mean, $20 million is,
- 22:27you know, what about 13% of it. So I don't know, it's kind of
- 22:31funny to me. You also worked with Stuart
- 22:34Mandel for the preseason bowl projections and they're the Iowa
- 22:38Hawkeyes and the College Football Playoff.
- 22:40Now, Stew has not exactly been known as somebody that is a a
- 22:43big Hawkeye fan. Northwestern grad has some
- 22:46memories of making his way to Kiddick that I've heard of talk
- 22:48about in the past. So getting to Iowa there, do you
- 22:51guys putting that together and kind of hand in hand?
- 22:54We're just making bowl projections, Doc.
- 22:56You know, the insurance and outs of the bowl selection process as
- 22:59well as anybody in the country. I mean, you know all the details
- 23:03of all of that. How much more difficult is this
- 23:06enterprise compared to just a couple of years back?
- 23:08I'm figuring where fits who fits where.
- 23:11What specifically with Iowa, you know, it wasn't necessarily me
- 23:16on that one. It was more him and which
- 23:18surprised me is based on his history there.
- 23:23I think it's what we did was, you know, he kind of projected
- 23:27the field. He projects the, the divisional
- 23:31ranking or the conference rankings.
- 23:33And then I kind of went through and put together all of the bold
- 23:37match ups and, and I, I have, I mean, I, I, I've killed some
- 23:42dead trees and I certainly have a bunch of excel spreadsheets
- 23:45on, you know, who's been to what bowl when and, and how, whether
- 23:49or not they could go the orders of each conference and who
- 23:53because, because they flip flop in a lot of years.
- 23:56Like, you know, last year there's the Holiday bowl in the
- 23:59Vegas bowl for the PAC 12 legacy teams.
- 24:02This year, it's the other way around, you know, so there's a
- 24:04lot of things I had to learn and know and write down.
- 24:07And so, you know, and then there's a little bit of feel
- 24:09and, and, and Lauren, who knows, you could have a situation where
- 24:13Iowa State beats Kansas State and then all of a sudden, yeah,
- 24:16that projection doesn't look quite as good.
- 24:18But today that it did maybe on Saturday.
- 24:21So you there's a lot there, but it's all in fun.
- 24:24It's entertaining. And as we get closer, we'll get
- 24:28more and more information from the Bulls themselves, which
- 24:30they'll kind of tell me, OK, we're kind of looking at this.
- 24:34We're kind of looking at that. But it's much more difficult,
- 24:37especially because of the PAC 12 situation.
- 24:40And, and this is the last year of this, of this alignment.
- 24:44But it could be extended for an extra year depending on what
- 24:47happens with the CFP because they they really don't know
- 24:50what's going to happen. And I know a lot of Bulls do not
- 24:52want that to happen in the such as, say, the Rate Bowl, which is
- 24:56in Arizona and it has Big 12 and the Big 10, but it's barred from
- 24:59having any of the PAC 12 teams. So they're like, we would love
- 25:03to have Arizona State or Utah or somebody like that, but they
- 25:07can't. Fascinating Scott Dockerman from
- 25:10The Athletic Dock you wrote about pharma getting leading up
- 25:12to the game. You're a college football fan.
- 25:15Guessing I know what you were doing at 11:00 Saturday morning,
- 25:18your thoughts on what you witnessed and it's just
- 25:21unfortunate the way college athletics has gone that we have
- 25:24to say goodbye to some of these rivalries.
- 25:27Maybe we don't or maybe this is, you know, jump started
- 25:30conversations again to make this a crossover.
- 25:34I don't know what's preventing it.
- 25:35I really don't Where there's a will, there's a way there seems
- 25:38that there is. Your thoughts on what you
- 25:40witnessed on Saturday for at the starting at 11?
- 25:43First of all, it was a fantastic game.
- 25:45Two teams that are ranked and deservedly so.
- 25:47I think, you know, Kansas State can say we made a lot of
- 25:51mistakes and they did and I think Iowa State started slow
- 25:54and they did and the rain didn't help.
- 25:56But I think we saw two teams that are going to be contenders
- 25:59in the Big 12 all year. It was great to see those two
- 26:02teams on that stage. And it really I I think it shows
- 26:05what what college football can be when you talk about these two
- 26:08programs that are, you know, up until 20, you know, it's Bill
- 26:12Snyder certainly, But then then of course, Matt Campbell, you
- 26:14know, two of the the biggest losers in college football
- 26:16history. But now our quality programs,
- 26:20very competitive programs to be able to do that on that stage
- 26:23and command the interest they did.
- 26:25I mean, our metrics were very, very high.
- 26:27We had a reporter there as well. He's he's going to write about
- 26:30kind of the Dublin scene. And so that's going to be really
- 26:34fun to see what he comes up with.
- 26:36Fantastic writer Chris Gamrani. But I think when you look at
- 26:39what the Big 12 is doing and this is overthinking and it's
- 26:42understandable, but you got to take that step back and they
- 26:45want to have everybody cycle through and play everybody as
- 26:48much as off as much as often as possible and and only protect 4
- 26:52rivalries. But but when you take that step
- 26:55back, it reminds me a lot of the Iowa, Wisconsin situation where
- 26:59this game matters to a lot of people.
- 27:01It's an important game. It's between two of now your
- 27:04better program and it's got the coolest nickname.
- 27:08If not in college football, one of them.
- 27:11You want to keep that alive. That's one that if you're Fox or
- 27:14you're ESPN, you're going to say we want to get farm again every
- 27:17year. We don't you know, we that's an
- 27:19important game, kind of like Wisconsin, Minnesota with the
- 27:21axe. You want that game.
- 27:23So I think if I'm the Big 12, I look at a different way to
- 27:27handle this. Rather than just cycle through
- 27:28as the teams as possible, why not say let's do a four year
- 27:32block. We have 16 teams.
- 27:34This is easy. Everybody gets 3 protected
- 27:36rivals for the next 4 years and then you cycle through everybody
- 27:40else two years on, two years off or every other year.
- 27:43And then at the end of four years, we'll, we'll reevaluate
- 27:45it. That way you can have some of
- 27:46your, your western teams play the western teams, you know,
- 27:49Colorado and Utah and Arizona and all that and then have
- 27:53stuff, you know, UCF and and Cincinnati and and West Virginia
- 27:57play one another and then and Iowa State play Kansas State,
- 28:01Kansas and Kansas State every year.
- 28:03Do that for a four year block. And then, you know, there's
- 28:06probably, you know, a third of those games that you could just
- 28:09discard, do it and then flip it around.
- 28:11I don't think it's that hard. I just, I think if you're the
- 28:14Big 12 and you got this kind of momentum with this type of game,
- 28:17why, why leave it hanging? Why make it a note when you
- 28:21really are building towards something that everybody wants
- 28:24to see each and every year? Doc, I love that because it's,
- 28:27you know, creating rivalries. It's not just will you put a
- 28:29trophy on it because we've seen programs that have tried to do
- 28:31that and it doesn't work. It has to be organic.
- 28:34You know, Iowa, Penn State has developed into a rivalry because
- 28:37we've seen a lot of the games and they've been great games.
- 28:39Iowa Northwestern created a rivalry without a trophy, didn't
- 28:42need a trophy. It just got there organically.
- 28:44And when you start to create those things a little bit deeper
- 28:47in it, it gets into that next year.
- 28:49Now Central Florida doesn't have one right now, but you get a
- 28:51couple of ugly match up against West Virginia.
- 28:53Those things can be created. I I think it's something that
- 28:56needs to be digged in a little bit deeper and take that a step
- 28:59further the the Big 12 as we know it now what it's looking
- 29:03like wide open again. That's been the offseason
- 29:05narrative for everybody after what we saw a season ago.
- 29:08Is there a path this year in the 12 team playoff?
- 29:11Is there a realistic path that path that you can see from
- 29:14multiple teams getting into the 12 teamer?
- 29:17It's it's going to be challenging.
- 29:19You've got to win. You've got to at worst be 11 and
- 29:242 to have that opportunity. It's just it's going to be
- 29:27difficult. But whether same recognition, I
- 29:30mean, it's going to be a fun league every year.
- 29:32They've got a lot of really good teams.
- 29:34But ultimately, when you're comparing it to an Alabama or
- 29:38Ohio State and just use those two teams as examples of
- 29:41Michigan, a Georgia. And if you're in that situation,
- 29:45they're nine and three and you look at them and you see, OK, I
- 29:48would say maybe 11:00 and 2:00, but in Alabama maybe 9:00 and
- 29:513:00. But you look at the talent and
- 29:53and everybody's going to skew towards that.
- 29:55Alabama, it's not fair, but it's the way it is.
- 29:58So I think if in this situation you're going to want to 11 and
- 30:03one teams at first playing in the Big 12 championship and that
- 30:07being a close game, then you've got an opportunity.
- 30:10But I don't think that it's going to be easy for them.
- 30:12Even in a 16 team playoff, it's going to be a challenge for them
- 30:15to get more than one in it. Doc last thing for me, I was the
- 30:19depth chart has come out. Sam Phillips was the first thing
- 30:22to jump to me beating Reese Vanderzee.
- 30:25He's at the top too. He is and there's no or and
- 30:29ference talked about him in Las Vegas.
- 30:30I'm sure you heard dad talked to him about him on big 10 network.
- 30:33He's Vanderzee has been one of the buzzes this August, yet he
- 30:37didn't win the starting job. Well, when you saw the depth
- 30:39chart doc what jumped off at you?
- 30:41Obviously no left tackle named as of yet.
- 30:45Yeah, I think that that starts it with wide receiver because
- 30:48you're you're right. I mean, I expected Reese
- 30:51Sanders, he who started open the first game last year as a true
- 30:54freshman, the only one to ever do it at Iowa.
- 30:57And here he is on the on the number two line behind a guy
- 31:00who's a, you know, who's, you know, transfer in.
- 31:05And I think that was something that kind of jumped out at me.
- 31:07But I would say between that maybe Bryce Hawthorne actually
- 31:11starting and it's not because of it's, it's whether it's Iowa
- 31:16getting away from it or he was just that much better.
- 31:20We always have this. They're going to skew seniority
- 31:22wise. That's why Lucas Van Ness never
- 31:24started a game. That's why AJ Apanezza had to
- 31:26wait his turn then before he could start a game.
- 31:29And and so to see, OK, wow, the sophomore from South Dakota
- 31:33State jumped in there as the starter, I think was kind of the
- 31:36thing that caught my eye along with, you know, Sam Phillips
- 31:40certainly did too, because we just didn't see a lot of him,
- 31:43whether it was in the spring or or the kids day practice, He
- 31:46just wasn't wasn't the guy out there.
- 31:49But I I would also say that I think their snaps will be real
- 31:52comparable. It's this is going to be like
- 31:54basketball where you have you know, you know, you have about 8
- 31:58or 9 guys who play. There'll be one or two that has
- 32:0130, there'll be one or two that has 12 minutes and the rest will
- 32:04be in that middle. I think that's what you're going
- 32:05to see a wide receiver that sure for I.
- 32:07Let you go on this doc. I asked somebody what can you
- 32:10tell me about Albany and they just said bad.
- 32:12That was the response that I got back.
- 32:15Do you have any insight at all this Albany team?
- 32:17They were in the FCS playoffs a couple of years ago and what a
- 32:19couple of games, but sounds like definitely a rebuild happening
- 32:22with the Great Danes. Any insight at all, what kind of
- 32:25difficult, any kind of pushback that they're going to have
- 32:27against the Hawks Saturday? Yeah, this is not going to be a
- 32:31this is not a game if I'm Albany that I'm excited about for a lot
- 32:35of reasons. I mean, they have an interim
- 32:37head coach, their coach left at, you know, like in February.
- 32:41And so they just moved people up.
- 32:42But, you know, a couple of years ago, yeah, they did go to the
- 32:44playoffs. So in some respects, you look at
- 32:47Iowa, it's a little bit unfair to to say that they are, you
- 32:51know, they're scheduling a cupcake.
- 32:53I mean, they're an FCS team, So take it for what it's worth.
- 32:55But but this is a team that you know, that a few years ago had
- 32:59Jared Verse before he went to Fort State.
- 33:01That's that's when they actually did that.
- 33:03So I think this is, you know, in every single area they were not
- 33:09good at FCS. And so to come to Kinnock
- 33:12Stadium, you know, you, you, you would expect there there might
- 33:17be upwards of 90 players getting seen some action on on Saturday
- 33:21night for the Hawkeyes. I did not know they had Jared
- 33:24Verse. That's no wonder they were good
- 33:26man. He's a difference maker in the
- 33:28NFL. Doc, Great stuff.
- 33:30I know you'll be busy this week. Week 1 upon us.
- 33:33If you could only watch one game, Doc, If, what game would
- 33:36you choose? Would it be the big one, the
- 33:38early 1? Ohio State, Texas or another
- 33:40game surpassed that in your mind.
- 33:44No, that I mean, when you're talking about one versus 2 in
- 33:46the coaches poll, one versus 3 in the AP poll, two teams that
- 33:49played in the semifinals last year, they have two of the most
- 33:52interesting quarterback situations in the country.
- 33:55The two iconic programs. You got to go with that one.
- 33:58However, I will say that LSU, Clemson is the one that really
- 34:01stands out for me because I think Clemson I have I picked
- 34:04them to to be the runner up nationally and and LSU, you
- 34:08know, they've lost five straight opener.
- 34:10So, so you know, if they lose a 6th 1, which I would say that
- 34:14they probably will, and Garrett Nesmeyer is really good
- 34:17quarterback, but but going to Clemson is a very tough chore.
- 34:20I I think this is, you know, that would be a close #2 and in
- 34:24most years it would be my number one, but Texas, Ohio State is
- 34:28the alpha this. Week and hopefully the Hawks are
- 34:30pouring it on over Albany so it's 6:30.
- 34:33I won't even flinch when I change the channel.
- 34:36Doc. Enjoy the week buddy.
- 34:37Appreciate this as always. We'll talk to you next week.
- 34:39Thank you. Scott Dockerman.
- 34:40OK. Thank you.
- 34:41Yeah, good to talk to you Scott Dockerman from the athletic
- 34:43Really busy week content on the Ying Yang at the athletic here
- 34:47for a college football fans scored before 2.
- 34:50Miller and Condon back to wrap it up.
- 34:51Trent's Plays of the Day money line Iowa State winner TC.
- 34:55Oh yeah, but well done on that one.
- 34:58Miller and Condon, it's the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 35:01Hi, Miller and Condon, welcome back.
- 35:03Final segment here on a Monday. Coming up at the top of the hour
- 35:08off the bench, Lucas Strange, Sean Roberts until 5:00 and then
- 35:14overtime, Iowa 5 until 6:00. Well, some good baseball on tap
- 35:20to start the week. No Cubs tonight.
- 35:22They'll begin the three-game set in San Francisco tomorrow.
- 35:26Normally we would, we'd be are your team versus my team.
- 35:29But your team's, they're out of it.
- 35:31They're out of it. But Joe Ryan is pitching.
- 35:33Are they sucking the last time in?
- 35:35America League? Yep.
- 35:36No way. Yep, that's brutal.
- 35:39It is. And I'll be betting against
- 35:41them. Give me the Blue Jays only -142
- 35:44I don't Joe Ryan. That's why against Scherzer
- 35:47though. You said it, Scherzer's, but
- 35:49goodly. Really good.
- 35:50I'll take the better team and lay the -142 Gonna do the same
- 35:53with the Royals against the White Sox on the road though.
- 35:56The red hot White Sox, winners of two in a row.
- 35:59You know, it's too bad because Kansas City kind of flirted with
- 36:02it a little bit. They're still in They're.
- 36:03Still in it. But you got to win those games,
- 36:06man. And I'm going to take a long
- 36:08shot. Give me.
- 36:10Cincy. No, I looked at it for a while.
- 36:13I know it was Hunter Green, Brad Lord and the Washington
- 36:17Nationals against the Yankees. Schlitter goes, he's usually
- 36:21good and he runs into trouble in like the 4th singly every single
- 36:24time. Throws hard, doesn't get real
- 36:26deep into games. Give me Lord and the Nationals
- 36:28better than two to one price tag.
- 36:30Too good for me to pass up on that one.
- 36:32Nationals, Blue Jays, Royals, nothing in the WNBA.
- 36:36Looked at a couple games there and now we're going to be
- 36:40inching closer to football on Thursday.
- 36:43It's unbelievable. And, and what a, what a slate of
- 36:45games. I mean, what a weekend to start,
- 36:47right? We didn't talk about Notre Dame,
- 36:49Miami. No, the talk probably should.
- 36:52What is that? Sunday.
- 36:53That's the Sunday. Night.
- 36:54But there's a Sunday early game, right?
- 36:56South Carolina Vitech. Oh, you're not champion, right?
- 37:01Like it? Not too shabby?
- 37:02Sign up for. That and then one only on
- 37:04Monday. Yes, just the TCU Carolina.
- 37:07Game that'll be good. Iowa State's got TCU on their
- 37:09schedule. That'll be a big game.
- 37:11So we'll get a good look at them at least early on in the year.
- 37:13Your guy Hoover, that QB Hoover, Josh Hoover, good stuff.
- 37:18Well, fun to be talking college football.
- 37:20Great win for the Cyclone. It's just a massive win for that
- 37:23school. And now they'll take on South
- 37:25Dakota and I would get Albany. Depth chart is out.
- 37:28We'll get into it tomorrow, hopefully catch up with one of
- 37:31the Hawkeye reporters as soon as the press conferences.
- 37:33Players at noon and then Ference 145.
- 37:36So there's a window there. Maybe we can grab one to talk
- 37:39with us. We hope that we get to talk with
- 37:41you tomorrow as we do every Monday through Friday from noon
- 37:44until 2. Miller and Condon, thanks for
- 37:46being with us, Iowa Sports Radio Network.
