- 0:14Speaker 1: This is Kevin Sports for It Daily, bringing you the
- 0:16Speaker 1: Folks and Hip Sports Show. On today's show, we have
- 0:23Speaker 1: reports on local cricket, hockey and netball, a round up
- 0:28Speaker 1: of park run venues around the country where our local
- 0:30Speaker 1: park runners visited last weekend, a recap of yesterday's Shepway
- 0:37Speaker 1: District School Sports Day, and if I get time, I'll
- 0:41Speaker 1: tell you about my birthday weekend as a tourist in London.
- 0:48Speaker 1: And our special guest today is Paul Carney, chairman of
- 0:51Speaker 1: the Sports Trust, who'll be telling us all about the
- 0:54Speaker 1: Trust and the work they do. Plus he'd be bringing
- 0:59Speaker 1: us up to date with what's going on at the
- 1:00Speaker 1: Folks and Sports Center.
- 1:05Speaker 2: Now.
- 1:05Speaker 1: Last night I was, you know, do you get bored?
- 1:09Speaker 1: You flip through the old teley, get the old remote,
- 1:12Speaker 1: and I came across a film I hadn't seen in years,
- 1:16Speaker 1: and so I settled down and watched the very first
- 1:19Speaker 1: film of the Rookie series. And I'll tell you what
- 1:26Speaker 1: I enjoyed it. It was like watching it for the first time.
- 1:28Speaker 1: I knew the result of a fight, but all the
- 1:31Speaker 1: bits in between that I'd forgotten about over the years
- 1:33Speaker 1: just came flatting back and in other theme tune. I
- 1:37Speaker 1: what a fantastic thing tune. So what better way to
- 1:40Speaker 1: start a sports show than with a Rookie thing? Well,
- 2:09Speaker 1: what a great track to start the show. As I said,
- 2:12Speaker 1: I was watching the Rockie film, the first one. There
- 2:16Speaker 1: are other ones. It did become a bit predictable, but
- 2:19Speaker 1: I still love the series. But I don't think you
- 2:21Speaker 1: can beat the first Rockie film when it came out,
- 2:24Speaker 1: and what a sensation it made. Right, Okay, Now I'm
- 2:27Speaker 1: joined today by Paul Karney from the Sports Trust. Hello Paul,
- 2:30Speaker 1: how are.
- 2:30Speaker 3: You hello, mister Ferret, how are you?
- 2:32Speaker 1: Yeah good, Thanks very much, Yeah good, Thanks, Welcome to
- 2:35Speaker 1: the show. Now tell us what is your role at
- 2:38Speaker 1: the Sports Trust.
- 2:39Speaker 3: Well, I'm lucky enough to be the chair of the
- 2:42Speaker 3: Sports Trust, okay, and I've been a trustee for thirteen
- 2:46Speaker 3: or something years and chair for the last two.
- 2:48Speaker 1: And a bit. Right, okay, So how do you become
- 2:50Speaker 1: How did you get the spot in the chair then
- 2:52Speaker 1: in the chair?
- 2:53Speaker 3: I think I was the unlucky one who didn't step
- 2:56Speaker 3: back when everybody else did. No, I've been on the
- 2:59Speaker 3: Trust a long time. I was one of the original trustees.
- 3:03Speaker 3: I'd previously been the vice chair for a number of years.
- 3:06Speaker 3: So when Trevor Minter retired, I seem to be the
- 3:09Speaker 3: obvious choice to step up.
- 3:11Speaker 1: Okay, And was it a tough task? Did you do
- 3:14Speaker 1: you find it, you know, being a vice chair and
- 3:17Speaker 1: stepping up that little one rung up the ladder. Was
- 3:19Speaker 1: it a little bit of a challenge?
- 3:22Speaker 3: No, I didn't find it too much of a challenge,
- 3:24Speaker 3: although there was a lot of work to do. I
- 3:27Speaker 3: think we might touch on a few of the other
- 3:29Speaker 3: things that we're up to at the moment during this interview.
- 3:31Speaker 3: During this conversation, we had to do a little bit
- 3:34Speaker 3: of soul searching about what we needed to do next
- 3:37Speaker 3: as a charity to grow with some of the projects
- 3:39Speaker 3: that we have ongoing. So yes, there was a lot
- 3:42Speaker 3: of work just to think about our strategy and to
- 3:44Speaker 3: redefine ourselves a little bit.
- 3:46Speaker 1: Right, So tell us a little bit about your background,
- 3:48Speaker 1: and I mean, all the years you've been with the Trust,
- 3:51Speaker 1: I take it as it basically as a volunteer, but
- 3:54Speaker 1: you've obviously had a work in life. What you've been
- 3:56Speaker 1: up to.
- 3:57Speaker 3: So I started out as a PE teacher and my
- 4:01Speaker 3: last PEE teaching job in schools was in Homewood in
- 4:04Speaker 3: Tentedon and then I joined Canterbury christ Church University. I
- 4:08Speaker 3: was a teacher trainer, so I was training pe teachers
- 4:12Speaker 3: for primary schools and secondary schools. And I'm just coming
- 4:15Speaker 3: towards the end of twenty five years of working there
- 4:17Speaker 3: and I've decided to do something different. So I'm taking
- 4:20Speaker 3: redundancy and July the thirty first, I'll be looking for
- 4:23Speaker 3: a new job.
- 4:24Speaker 1: Oh really, okay? Yeah, have you got anything in mind?
- 4:27Speaker 1: Was it a tough decision or would like just time
- 4:29Speaker 1: to try something else?
- 4:31Speaker 3: Yeah, it was a really tough decision. But all good
- 4:33Speaker 3: things come to an end, don't they. So I thought
- 4:35Speaker 3: it was time to try something else. Nothing lined up
- 4:38Speaker 3: just yet, but yeah, some interesting opportunities out there.
- 4:42Speaker 1: Right, Okay, Well, we won't put you under pressure there.
- 4:45Speaker 1: We just let us know when you're start a new
- 4:46Speaker 1: job and we perhaps get you back in and find
- 4:48Speaker 1: out what it's all about. But I mean, the university
- 4:52Speaker 1: is over the last it was. The time you've been
- 4:54Speaker 1: there have really grown, haven't they. They call them campuses now,
- 4:57Speaker 1: but I've been up to I always get the universities
- 5:01Speaker 1: muddled up. The one this side of town, that's Christ church,
- 5:06Speaker 1: isn't it church?
- 5:07Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 5:07Speaker 1: Was that where you were based?
- 5:08Speaker 3: Yes, it was, yes, yeah, yeah, And you're right. It
- 5:11Speaker 3: grew from a very small college that you felt like
- 5:15Speaker 3: you knew everybody when I joined to at its height
- 5:19Speaker 3: a university of around twenty five thousand students and staff.
- 5:23Speaker 3: And yeah, the sport aspect of the university really grew
- 5:28Speaker 3: and we used to have a few teams. By the
- 5:31Speaker 3: time I'm stepping away, we had around thirty different sports,
- 5:35Speaker 3: sixty or so different teams, fifteen hundred gym members, facilities
- 5:39Speaker 3: here there and everywhere, physical activity and well being programs, yeah,
- 5:44Speaker 3: everything you'd associate with a modern university, big operation.
- 5:47Speaker 1: It has changed so much, isn't it. I mean, if
- 5:51Speaker 1: you like it used to be like football and cricket
- 5:53Speaker 1: and that was it, or a bit of cross country
- 5:54Speaker 1: running if you were pushed into it. But now I've
- 5:57Speaker 1: had people sitting where you are that have been to
- 6:00Speaker 1: Lufborough and they tell me what it's like up there,
- 6:03Speaker 1: and it is just the mind boggles.
- 6:05Speaker 2: You know.
- 6:09Speaker 1: Once again, the opportunities are there, you've got to work
- 6:11Speaker 1: for them and get into university. But once you get there, Yeah,
- 6:15Speaker 1: it's amazing, isn't it.
- 6:16Speaker 3: It really is. And I know a lot of people
- 6:19Speaker 3: can knock Luborough because it's seen as the best in
- 6:23Speaker 3: the country for sport, but the investment that they've put
- 6:26Speaker 3: into it and the campus that they've created is truly
- 6:29Speaker 3: magical if you're somebody who loves your sport, and it
- 6:33Speaker 3: really is a place to aspire to go. And I
- 6:35Speaker 3: say to any young person, because a lot of young
- 6:37Speaker 3: people have put off university because of the money these days,
- 6:41Speaker 3: is sport at university is a real opportunity to spend
- 6:44Speaker 3: three years studying, having a good time, but making use
- 6:47Speaker 3: of some really world class facilities. And it's not just
- 6:50Speaker 3: at Lufborough. Universities up and down the country have some
- 6:52Speaker 3: amazing facilities to access these days.
- 6:54Speaker 1: Yeah, facilities like I say, I've only touched on a few.
- 6:57Speaker 1: I've been to the Christchurch one there. I wish I
- 7:01Speaker 1: could go to Liftbo. I'd love to have a look
- 7:02Speaker 1: around there. But yeah, you're right, So I mean that
- 7:06Speaker 1: must have been if you've been seeing all those changes
- 7:10Speaker 1: in the years you've been doing PEA, it must make
- 7:13Speaker 1: it even harder because the early days was it just
- 7:15Speaker 1: like a pair of plimp cells and a rope to
- 7:18Speaker 1: climb up and now there's absolutely everything, isn't it.
- 7:21Speaker 3: Yes, it really is. So christ Church still does a
- 7:24Speaker 3: lot of teacher training for secondary pe. But I left
- 7:27Speaker 3: that part of my role behind me about about twelve
- 7:31Speaker 3: thirteen years ago when I became the Director of Sport
- 7:33Speaker 3: and Active Health at the university, so I looked after
- 7:36Speaker 3: all the extracurricular sport and physical activity and exercise. So yeah,
- 7:41Speaker 3: a slightly different.
- 7:42Speaker 1: Role for me. Yeah yeah, But there are so many
- 7:44Speaker 1: different sports as well now, aren't there. I mean back
- 7:47Speaker 1: in the day, even going back in Folkston day, I mean, okay,
- 7:51Speaker 1: in this town has always been quite popular, but now
- 7:54Speaker 1: since Three Hills, oh man, it's off the scale, isn't it.
- 7:58Speaker 1: And the juniors, the junior section is so good. They've
- 8:02Speaker 1: been to national finals. And it just shows that it's
- 8:07Speaker 1: not just football and cricket, isn't it? These days?
- 8:10Speaker 3: It's not just football and cricket, although sometimes football does
- 8:13Speaker 3: dominate a little bit because it seems to be fifty
- 8:15Speaker 3: two weeks of the year now that doesn't seem to
- 8:17Speaker 3: have an offseason. But what I would also follow up
- 8:20Speaker 3: on is to say thank you to all of those
- 8:22Speaker 3: volunteers at coach at the clubs like the Folks and
- 8:24Speaker 3: Optimists nearly always volunteer led and without the people who
- 8:29Speaker 3: put in their time for these young people, clubs like
- 8:31Speaker 3: that don't have the success that they do. So yeah,
- 8:34Speaker 3: behind the success and the opportunities for young people are
- 8:36Speaker 3: a lot of volunteers.
- 8:37Speaker 1: That's right. I mean when the hockey season is in
- 8:40Speaker 1: full flow, I do try and report and all the scores,
- 8:44Speaker 1: and I think it's let me get this right, I
- 8:47Speaker 1: think it's eighteen eight men's teams and five or six
- 8:53Speaker 1: ladies teams. Now you multiply that by eleven, and then
- 8:57Speaker 1: as the amount of players, then you've got all the
- 8:58Speaker 1: coaches and all the background and staff, and then you
- 9:01Speaker 1: think of all the transport, all the traveling. Yeah, it's
- 9:04Speaker 1: just it's just an amazing logistical nightmare for some people.
- 9:08Speaker 1: And we must admit, while we're talking about hockey, I've
- 9:10Speaker 1: got to give special praise. You know, Amy Bumstead. She
- 9:13Speaker 1: is so good in the social media side of things,
- 9:16Speaker 1: and every club should have somebody like her because it's
- 9:19Speaker 1: just this is just such an asset to the club.
- 9:23Speaker 1: And she's a player as well, plays in goal, and
- 9:25Speaker 1: so's she's been in for loads of times. Okay, So
- 9:28Speaker 1: with digressing a little bit, now, why I change the
- 9:31Speaker 1: subject very slightly, but I understand you've got to she
- 9:34Speaker 1: might be listening in. You've got a very famous wife
- 9:36Speaker 1: that has sat in these studios and I'm sure she's
- 9:39Speaker 1: training really hard for an event, So tell us what
- 9:42Speaker 1: she's up to.
- 9:43Speaker 3: Well, yes, my very famous wife as you refer to her,
- 9:47Speaker 3: is Allison, who was one of the Atlantic Angels who
- 9:50Speaker 3: competed in the British Indoor Rowing Championships in December. And no,
- 9:54Speaker 3: she's not training very hard at all at the moment,
- 9:56Speaker 3: so maybe this will be a prompt to get back
- 9:59Speaker 3: on ready for December.
- 10:00Speaker 1: So Allison, you can't hide now, get those get out
- 10:04Speaker 1: on that rowing machine. Mind you, they're training in Charlotte's loft,
- 10:07Speaker 1: weren't they, And it was pretty hot. So you get
- 10:10Speaker 1: that lebrow machine out in the garden and keep us
- 10:13Speaker 1: up today. I've got you penciled in and my diary,
- 10:15Speaker 1: the three of you to come in and tell me
- 10:17Speaker 1: what you're up to, So you better have a good
- 10:20Speaker 1: story to tell. Right, We're gonna take a little break
- 10:22Speaker 1: now and we're just gonna have a little bit of music.
- 10:25Speaker 2: Now.
- 10:25Speaker 1: This is another theme, and I do love this one
- 10:27Speaker 1: as well. This is the shape Shifters and a Lola's theme. Well,
- 10:48Speaker 1: another great theme there. That's the shape Shifters and Lola's theme.
- 10:53Speaker 1: Kind of takes you back to the days of Hawaii five,
- 10:56Speaker 1: isn't it and the surfing along the California beaches. All Right,
- 11:01Speaker 1: So we've got a bit of sunshine out here today,
- 11:03Speaker 1: which is very nice. So we're in this lovely air
- 11:05Speaker 1: condition studio and I'm chatting to Paul Carney, and Paul
- 11:09Speaker 1: is the chairman of the Sports Trust, and we're going
- 11:11Speaker 1: to have a chat about that now, Paul. So I'm
- 11:13Speaker 1: not really sure where to start, so I'll just hand
- 11:16Speaker 1: it over to you. What do the Sports Trust do?
- 11:19Speaker 3: Well? Just before I go to that, I'd just like
- 11:23Speaker 3: to say, I don't quite remember that theme. I'm not
- 11:25Speaker 3: quite old enough, so I'll take your word for it
- 11:27Speaker 3: being Hawaii five. Oh but yeah. No, we're a community
- 11:31Speaker 3: sports charity and we try to deliver inclusive, barrier free
- 11:36Speaker 3: opportunities to access sport and physical activity for all ages
- 11:39Speaker 3: and abilities. I think quite often we're only associated with schools,
- 11:44Speaker 3: but we do much more than that.
- 11:47Speaker 1: Right, So, I mean, it's been going a while. As
- 11:49Speaker 1: you say, now it used to be called the shep
- 11:51Speaker 1: Waste Sports Trust. There's a bit of a name change,
- 11:54Speaker 1: but it's still basically doing the same thing, and obviously
- 11:58Speaker 1: it's growing. Are there any particular new sports or sports
- 12:03Speaker 1: that are really really on the up, really growing down there?
- 12:08Speaker 3: So yeah, we work across a number of different sites
- 12:12Speaker 3: F fifty one, which I'm sure people know about. We
- 12:15Speaker 3: have recently purchased the Sports Center Folks and Sports Center,
- 12:19Speaker 3: which we'll talk about shortly. We operate three hills and
- 12:25Speaker 3: I think one of the fastest growing sports there at
- 12:27Speaker 3: the moment is paddle tennis and the Paddle Stars guys
- 12:31Speaker 3: there who run the paddle Tennis. I think it's very
- 12:35Speaker 3: nearly fully booked. They're very, very busy, So that's probably
- 12:38Speaker 3: the fastest gros.
- 12:39Speaker 1: Yeah, at the moment, right, I have been down there
- 12:42Speaker 1: and chatted to the two guys down there and that
- 12:44Speaker 1: I've asked them to come on and I must get
- 12:46Speaker 1: down there again. But I did go down there for
- 12:48Speaker 1: a tournament. There was a tournament over the weekend, and
- 12:54Speaker 1: I mean the first thing they said to me was,
- 12:55Speaker 1: you know, on the first day of the weekend, it
- 12:57Speaker 1: was really well supported. But they were and expecting many
- 13:02Speaker 1: people the next day, but they admitted that they chose
- 13:04Speaker 1: the wrong day. It was either Mother's Day or Father's Day.
- 13:07Speaker 1: And if ever you put an event on the Mother's
- 13:09Speaker 1: Day or Father's Day, it's almost asking for trouble because
- 13:12Speaker 1: people are so committed, you know. But yeah, no, it
- 13:15Speaker 1: looked really exciting and I must get down there and
- 13:18Speaker 1: with my diary and get them both in into the
- 13:21Speaker 1: studios here. But I mean, the three Heels, it's kind
- 13:27Speaker 1: of added another dimension to Folks and Sports And sadly
- 13:32Speaker 1: we lost the Folks and Sports Center. We're going to
- 13:34Speaker 1: come to that in a minute, because it seems like
- 13:37Speaker 1: it is on the way back. But is the I mean,
- 13:42Speaker 1: did the Three Hills kind of benefit for the loss
- 13:46Speaker 1: of the sports center for.
- 13:48Speaker 3: A while, I don't think it particularly benefited. Of course,
- 13:53Speaker 3: the biggest loss from the sports center was the swimming,
- 13:56Speaker 3: and I know that a lot of swimmers have dispersed
- 13:59Speaker 3: to other pool around the local area where they've been
- 14:03Speaker 3: able to But no, there's quite a different offer at
- 14:06Speaker 3: the two sites. So with the running track, the synthetic
- 14:09Speaker 3: artificial pitches, cricket, you know, a lot of the sports
- 14:14Speaker 3: on offer at Three Hills were quite different to the
- 14:16Speaker 3: ones on offer at the Sports.
- 14:18Speaker 1: Center, right, okay? And the Sports Trust is grown and
- 14:22Speaker 1: grown and now, as a chairman, is it kind of
- 14:27Speaker 1: reached a peak because it peaked? Is there more growth
- 14:29Speaker 1: in there to go? Or were you like maxed out? Now?
- 14:32Speaker 3: We are still growing and of course until the Sports
- 14:36Speaker 3: Center is back up and open, we won't have peaked,
- 14:39Speaker 3: so we've got a lot of work to do yet.
- 14:42Speaker 3: But you're right. We started as a small school sport
- 14:45Speaker 3: based charity just in twenty twelve and if you remember
- 14:50Speaker 3: then the government cut the funding for school sports and
- 14:54Speaker 3: to his credit, Roger Dehhn saw this as a really
- 14:58Speaker 3: big miss from the local schools and he helped us
- 15:01Speaker 3: to set up the new charity. So travel them into
- 15:05Speaker 3: dan Hume and I helped her put the charity together
- 15:09Speaker 3: and with initial funding from the Roger Dehann Charitable Trust,
- 15:13Speaker 3: we were able to set up and help schools continue
- 15:16Speaker 3: to deliver their sport and to help create bridges to
- 15:20Speaker 3: some of the local clubs too.
- 15:21Speaker 1: Right, And as you're saying, it's more inclusive now, isn't it.
- 15:24Speaker 1: I mean I've had your colleagues Sarah Green in here
- 15:26Speaker 1: several times, and I'm amazed at the work she does,
- 15:29Speaker 1: and she gets out to all the schools and even
- 15:32Speaker 1: some of the little schools, and during COVID was really
- 15:35Speaker 1: interesting that she was setting them tasks sort of homework
- 15:38Speaker 1: to do and just to keep them active. But especially
- 15:42Speaker 1: children that they need to be active, don't they They
- 15:44Speaker 1: need to be doing something. And I can only say
- 15:47Speaker 1: from yesterday's experience. If I get time, I'll talk about
- 15:50Speaker 1: this later. But I was down at the track yesterday
- 15:54Speaker 1: for the Shepway School Sports and there were the amount
- 15:58Speaker 1: of excitement with the kid cheering their fellow children on,
- 16:02Speaker 1: especially in the relays. They had a mixed relay team,
- 16:05Speaker 1: you know, and the boys and girls. And the organizer
- 16:10Speaker 1: earn In Beresford from Sandgate School, she says, I have
- 16:12Speaker 1: to keep Benyd of these teams. These teams of six
- 16:15Speaker 1: are supposed to be three and three, she said, but
- 16:16Speaker 1: some of them try and slip four boys instead. Anyway,
- 16:20Speaker 1: the Sports Trust, so is there anything else you want
- 16:24Speaker 1: to add to the Sports Trust, anything else that you
- 16:27Speaker 1: want to say.
- 16:29Speaker 3: I think firstly to say we supported the event yesterday.
- 16:33Speaker 3: I think there were twenty five primary schools from right
- 16:35Speaker 3: across the region, which is absolutely fantastic, and I think
- 16:38Speaker 3: we were just about lucky enough with the weather. Yeah,
- 16:42Speaker 3: maybe a nice cool day was better than some of
- 16:44Speaker 3: the hot ones we had. We worked with all schools
- 16:47Speaker 3: in the district and we do extend our reach out
- 16:50Speaker 3: a little bit towards Ashford and over two oh you do, yep,
- 16:54Speaker 3: So some of the secondary school competitions, for example, we
- 16:58Speaker 3: play some of the Ashford schools. We work with preschoolers.
- 17:04Speaker 3: So we have our sort of mini Olympians type project.
- 17:08Speaker 3: And it's terrible of me, I've forgotten the name of
- 17:11Speaker 3: the people who have just provided us some funding, so
- 17:13Speaker 3: I'll write that on your social media. Later received some
- 17:15Speaker 3: sponsorship to help with that program, which is fantastic, and
- 17:19Speaker 3: we go all the way through to activities for that.
- 17:23Speaker 3: The older people in our generation is like that, so
- 17:29Speaker 3: over fifties, I think that means I qualify. But yeah,
- 17:34Speaker 3: so we do cater for the whole of our community
- 17:37Speaker 3: and that's something that we're really passionate about doing. It's
- 17:39Speaker 3: not just a focus on the sporty. This is a
- 17:42Speaker 3: focus on activity for everybody.
- 17:44Speaker 1: Right, so it's out there everybody. So we've giving you
- 17:47Speaker 1: addresses and stuff. But I'm sure you know where the
- 17:49Speaker 1: Sports Trust is in three heels. Has been a great
- 17:51Speaker 1: addition over the last ten years. In fact, it's been
- 17:53Speaker 1: open ten years and the Sports Trust has been going
- 17:56Speaker 1: even longer than that. So we're going to take a
- 17:58Speaker 1: little break, nap some music, and I'll tell you what
- 18:00Speaker 1: I do like this. I might get a lot of
- 18:02Speaker 1: stick for this, but this is McFly and obviously.
- 18:13Speaker 2: Recently been.
- 18:16Speaker 1: Hopelessly reagion out for this girl who's out of this world,
- 18:23Speaker 1: believe me, Esther.
- 18:36Speaker 2: NEIV.
- 18:42Speaker 1: So there we go. I've just found we've got another
- 18:44Speaker 1: McFly fan in the studio and there's only two of
- 18:48Speaker 1: us in the studio. You said you've seen them before, Paul.
- 18:51Speaker 3: I have said McFly a couple of times, including at
- 18:53Speaker 3: the Leescliff Hall when they came you can't beat the
- 18:56Speaker 3: Bitter McFly.
- 18:57Speaker 1: Yeah, you know what. I saw him once quite random
- 19:00Speaker 1: on a BBC news program early in the morning and
- 19:05Speaker 1: they did this some acoustic set of that song, just
- 19:10Speaker 1: like picked up the guitars and you oh, they were brilliant, fantastic. Yeah, right, Okay,
- 19:15Speaker 1: we're into round three now, Paul, and this is the
- 19:18Speaker 1: Sports Center. Now, the Sports center close suddenly some time ago,
- 19:22Speaker 1: and if you like, in recent times it's been announced
- 19:26Speaker 1: that it's going to reopen, but there are a lot
- 19:30Speaker 1: of hoops to jump through. So Paul, what's the latest situation.
- 19:35Speaker 3: Yes, the latest is it won't be opening very quickly.
- 19:40Speaker 3: We did purchase the sports center about a month ago.
- 19:43Speaker 3: The purchase was completed. There were a number of bids
- 19:46Speaker 3: to the administrator. I don't know the details of all
- 19:49Speaker 3: of them, but we know that our bid was preferred
- 19:52Speaker 3: because we were adamant we were going to save the
- 19:55Speaker 3: sports center and reopen it as a facility to the
- 19:58Speaker 3: local community. And I don't believe that all of the
- 20:01Speaker 3: bids would have done that. So we now own it.
- 20:07Speaker 3: We're now paying the costs of keeping it sort of
- 20:11Speaker 3: ticking over, if you like. But since we've been in,
- 20:14Speaker 3: we've discovered that there is an awful lot of work
- 20:16Speaker 3: to do to get it back and open and to
- 20:19Speaker 3: a condition that is going to be nice place to use, right,
- 20:24Speaker 3: And I think that's really important. The experience of using
- 20:27Speaker 3: a sports facility has got to be the right one.
- 20:30Speaker 1: And since the building has been changed, I mean, it
- 20:32Speaker 1: is a face, it's an old building. Generations of people
- 20:35Speaker 1: in folks and have been there. Does it kind of
- 20:38Speaker 1: meet today's standards?
- 20:41Speaker 3: Not quite so. I remember learning to swim at the
- 20:44Speaker 3: sports Center as a four or five year old back
- 20:46Speaker 3: in nineteen seventy six, and it opened just a few
- 20:49Speaker 3: years before that. I think I'm the same age as
- 20:52Speaker 3: the sports Center. I know from personal experience. Things are
- 20:55Speaker 3: beginning to drop off and not work quite properly, so
- 21:00Speaker 3: it needs a lot of work to get it back
- 21:03Speaker 3: up to standard. I think if it stayed open, certain
- 21:07Speaker 3: building regulations don't apply. But since it's been shut, to
- 21:10Speaker 3: reopen it it has to pass modern building standards, inspections
- 21:15Speaker 3: and so on. I think even little things that people
- 21:17Speaker 3: would probably look fast past, like the ramp up to
- 21:21Speaker 3: the front door, I don't think is d DA compliance.
- 21:24Speaker 3: So right from getting into the building the front we're
- 21:28Speaker 3: going to have to spend some money.
- 21:29Speaker 1: And what's the problem with the ramp. A ramp is
- 21:32Speaker 1: a ramp, isn't.
- 21:33Speaker 3: I think it's a little bit too steep modern standards,
- 21:37Speaker 3: so everything we can overcome, but it takes time to
- 21:42Speaker 3: put a proper project plan together. It takes time to
- 21:46Speaker 3: put a proper business case together, and I think we've
- 21:49Speaker 3: got to ensure that what we don't do is just
- 21:51Speaker 3: reopen it and fall into the same traps that the
- 21:55Speaker 3: previous administration did. Sports centers are very expensive to Sports
- 22:01Speaker 3: centers are closing up and down the country, especially those
- 22:03Speaker 3: with big swimming pools, and therefore we think it's probably
- 22:08Speaker 3: wise to take some time, put together a proper business plan,
- 22:11Speaker 3: spend the right amount of money on the sports center
- 22:14Speaker 3: so that we're not just putting sticking plasters over problems,
- 22:17Speaker 3: but we're reopening it as a facility that will then
- 22:21Speaker 3: operate for the next ten, twenty thirty years for the community,
- 22:25Speaker 3: and that we're not faced with the same situation in
- 22:27Speaker 3: two years time.
- 22:28Speaker 1: Right now, as you say, obviously the swimming pools are expensive,
- 22:31Speaker 1: and the pool there is many years old. So what
- 22:34Speaker 1: about the actual equipment to heat the pool and all
- 22:37Speaker 1: that sort of thing. I mean, is that up to
- 22:40Speaker 1: scratch now?
- 22:42Speaker 3: No, So, if anybody watched the TV documentary series on
- 22:48Speaker 3: Chernobyl and looked at the reactor sort of room and
- 22:51Speaker 3: the knobs and the flashing lights, that's exactly what the
- 22:55Speaker 3: panel that controls the sports center swimming pool looks like.
- 22:58Speaker 3: We've got a grant from Sport England, and we have
- 23:01Speaker 3: some grant money from the local council to address that.
- 23:05Speaker 3: We need to put a new pump system in, new
- 23:07Speaker 3: heating system, in, new cleaning system in. We probably need
- 23:11Speaker 3: to redo the electricity supply to all of that too.
- 23:14Speaker 3: So there's a lot of work to bring the pool
- 23:16Speaker 3: up to scratch, but we do have some funding to
- 23:18Speaker 3: be able to start getting on with that work.
- 23:19Speaker 1: Right and all about the actual pool itself has got
- 23:22Speaker 1: any cracks in it or don't you know it? You've
- 23:25Speaker 1: got to have some sort of survey done, I suppose
- 23:27Speaker 1: of you.
- 23:27Speaker 3: Yes, yes, we will. But the pool itself looks in
- 23:30Speaker 3: reasonable condition. One of the things is that if you
- 23:33Speaker 3: keep the water in the pool, it keeps all the
- 23:36Speaker 3: tiles and everything in place, so we can't drain it
- 23:39Speaker 3: otherwise all the tiles will fall off and the bottom of.
- 23:42Speaker 1: The pool will it dries out.
- 23:43Speaker 3: Yeah, So the pool's been kept ticking over and it
- 23:46Speaker 3: looks clean. It's not up to swimming standard, but it
- 23:49Speaker 3: is clean enough. But yeah, we've got to spend some
- 23:53Speaker 3: money on it before we can let people back in
- 23:55Speaker 3: and use it.
- 23:55Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, and what a thing? What about things like
- 23:57Speaker 1: the gum equipment has they've got to be tested and
- 24:00Speaker 1: reassessed or risk assessments and that sort of thing.
- 24:04Speaker 3: One hundred percent. But most of the gym equipment has
- 24:07Speaker 3: gone reclaimed by the administrators, so we will need to
- 24:12Speaker 3: do a complete refurbishment of the gym. The whole sports
- 24:16Speaker 3: center needs redecorating. The six changing rooms needs stripping out
- 24:23Speaker 3: and redoing. I often say, you know, when you use
- 24:26Speaker 3: something daily, you don't notice how bad it is. I
- 24:30Speaker 3: think if people were to walk back in and have
- 24:32Speaker 3: a look around, they would think, will we really using
- 24:34Speaker 3: it in this condition? And we've got to be able
- 24:38Speaker 3: to run it as in a financially sustainable way. And
- 24:43Speaker 3: people will only pay their money for an experience that
- 24:47Speaker 3: they expect, so we can't ask people to part with
- 24:50Speaker 3: their herd and money for something that isn't up to standard.
- 24:54Speaker 3: We've got to do it properly. So it is going
- 24:56Speaker 3: to take some time.
- 24:57Speaker 1: So our main from the top us have some sort
- 25:00Speaker 1: of business plan and projections. I don't don't you to
- 25:05Speaker 1: stick your neck out, Paul, but how long will this
- 25:07Speaker 1: project hak?
- 25:09Speaker 3: We think it will be twelve months, yeah, and we
- 25:13Speaker 3: think that's also relatively pessimistic. We think twelve months is.
- 25:19Speaker 1: Where we'll reach.
- 25:20Speaker 3: There'll probably be hiccups along the way. There always is
- 25:22Speaker 3: in projects like this. I've been involved with some previously
- 25:26Speaker 3: at the university and so on, so we know what
- 25:28Speaker 3: we're getting ourselves in for. But it is an old building,
- 25:30Speaker 3: so we will expect to find some gremlins in certain corners.
- 25:35Speaker 3: But yeah, no, we're anticipating that. Unfortunately, it will be
- 25:38Speaker 3: another twelve months or so. But that's the scale of
- 25:41Speaker 3: the project, right.
- 25:43Speaker 1: We didn't talk about this off here, but in the
- 25:46Speaker 1: past I've had people from talking about the go ape
- 25:52Speaker 1: thing that's there and the ski club. Is that all
- 25:55Speaker 1: included in the package?
- 25:56Speaker 3: Yeah, So we're looking at everything and we will work
- 26:01Speaker 3: out what we can retain and you know, what we
- 26:04Speaker 3: might need to do differently. But we're very conscious that
- 26:08Speaker 3: we've got a community asset that we want to try
- 26:10Speaker 3: and reopen for the community. It's got a lot of
- 26:14Speaker 3: support and a lot of people have very fond memories
- 26:17Speaker 3: of using it. I learned to ski at Folks in
- 26:19Speaker 3: Sports Center, as I learned to play golf at folks
- 26:21Speaker 3: and Sports Center. Yea and squash, we name it. We
- 26:26Speaker 3: all did it then. Yeah, So definitely we're very aware
- 26:29Speaker 3: that this can be an amazing facility for the community,
- 26:32Speaker 3: but we've got to reopen it for the future. So
- 26:35Speaker 3: things like pickleball which weren't around it.
- 26:37Speaker 1: Oh yes, right, yeah, No, I've had them of the
- 26:40Speaker 1: san is it. I can't remember his name now, but
- 26:42Speaker 1: I've had the pickable people in here. Yeah, and I've
- 26:46Speaker 1: been down to watch it and it's I'm surprised. It's
- 26:48Speaker 1: quite aggressive. Actually, it really gets stuck in you know. Yeah. Yeah,
- 26:52Speaker 1: we're just saying that sport has changed and if you
- 26:55Speaker 1: can keep this town alive with the sports for another
- 26:58Speaker 1: thirty years, man, that'd be fantastic thing.
- 27:01Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 27:01Speaker 1: So you're doing a great job, by the sand, we've
- 27:03Speaker 1: just got to ask the people. Are folks them to
- 27:05Speaker 1: be patient? There's lots going on behind the scenes by
- 27:08Speaker 1: the sound of it, and you've just got to bear
- 27:10Speaker 1: with us.
- 27:10Speaker 3: Is that right, Paul, Yes, we would love people to
- 27:15Speaker 3: be patient. As soon as we have some plans to
- 27:18Speaker 3: share of what the inside the gym refurbishment, what that
- 27:22Speaker 3: can look like, we'll share those. We are talking to
- 27:25Speaker 3: the clubs that have been resident at the Sports Center,
- 27:27Speaker 3: trying to keep them up to date with what is happening.
- 27:30Speaker 3: But yes, we need patients, we need support and we
- 27:33Speaker 3: are a charity, so we are also trying to raise
- 27:37Speaker 3: money for certain aspects of the project. So we're putting
- 27:40Speaker 3: bids in for example to Suport England to the local council.
- 27:44Speaker 3: So yeah, we do need support with us.
- 27:46Speaker 1: Yeah right, okay, So we are fast running out of time, Paul,
- 27:51Speaker 1: And it's been awesome morning talking about local facilities that
- 27:55Speaker 1: sometimes people, as you say, they take for granted and
- 27:59Speaker 1: when they're gone they think, oh, where's that going, where's
- 28:02Speaker 1: the sports center? So we just ask you you lot
- 28:04Speaker 1: out there, to be patient if you're listening in. Things
- 28:07Speaker 1: are moving. So Paul, before we wrap up, there's one
- 28:10Speaker 1: thing we've got to talk about, and that was a
- 28:13Speaker 1: fifty one project there that you mentioned that you want
- 28:16Speaker 1: to put a shout out for.
- 28:17Speaker 3: Yes, So fifty one is the amazing skate park and
- 28:21Speaker 3: climbing center building just at the top of Tontyne Street
- 28:25Speaker 3: and we use that for our school holiday camps as
- 28:29Speaker 3: well as three Hills and we do a lot of
- 28:32Speaker 3: work on the school holiday camps and young people can
- 28:34Speaker 3: come in, they can get food, get activity. They're great things.
- 28:39Speaker 3: There are still places if people want to book via
- 28:41Speaker 3: our website, and we also have the Shred Club. So
- 28:44Speaker 3: one of the things we're absolutely committed to is to
- 28:46Speaker 3: provide access to these amazing facilities as cheaply as possible,
- 28:51Speaker 3: and young people, if they're at school in the area
- 28:54Speaker 3: in the Folkston Hives District, can access the Shred Club
- 28:57Speaker 3: for a pound, So turn up make use of these
- 29:00Speaker 3: amazing facilities for really nothing at all.
- 29:03Speaker 1: Yeah, brilliant right now, amongst all those topics we've been
- 29:08Speaker 1: talking about, Paul, is there anything else you want to
- 29:11Speaker 1: add apart from telling us how to get in touch.
- 29:14Speaker 3: I think I'd just like to say a huge thank
- 29:16Speaker 3: you to all of the staff of the Sports Trust.
- 29:20Speaker 3: As you say, running facilities is not easy, so all
- 29:23Speaker 3: of the staff that work in the facilities, Sarah and
- 29:25Speaker 3: the team that deliver the school's program do an absolutely
- 29:28Speaker 3: amazing job. The executive team have worked so hard this
- 29:32Speaker 3: year to try and get the Sports Center over the
- 29:34Speaker 3: line in terms of the purchase, and we have a
- 29:37Speaker 3: great team of trustees volunteers on the Trust who give
- 29:41Speaker 3: their time free of charge, some really brilliant people who
- 29:44Speaker 3: have been able to guide the executive team through some
- 29:46Speaker 3: really big decisions this year. So just a huge thank
- 29:49Speaker 3: you to.
- 29:49Speaker 1: All of them, right, and I mean, it's so easy
- 29:52Speaker 1: to get in touch these days. So we just put
- 29:54Speaker 1: a three heels or Sports Trust in the search box,
- 29:57Speaker 1: the Sports Trust, the Sports Trust that's right at the
- 29:59Speaker 1: Sports US. Well, Paul, it's been a really eye opening
- 30:03Speaker 1: morning with you, Paul, especially when it comes to the
- 30:06Speaker 1: sports Center. As we've said, we just ask the people
- 30:08Speaker 1: of folks them to be very patient, and it sounds
- 30:12Speaker 1: like you're in very good hands, lots of experience, and
- 30:15Speaker 1: they are working for your benefit and for the future generations.
- 30:18Speaker 1: And as Paul said, you know he learned to swim
- 30:22Speaker 1: and learn all the other things. I remember taking my
- 30:26Speaker 1: three children up and down, up and down, swimming classes
- 30:30Speaker 1: up and down always happened to be on different nights.
- 30:33Speaker 1: But you've all got that to look forward to. So
- 30:35Speaker 1: so Paul, thank you so much for coming in, and
- 30:38Speaker 1: we just await some exciting news.
- 30:43Speaker 3: But before we go, I would just like to say
- 30:46Speaker 3: thank you to you Kevin for all the work you do.
- 30:48Speaker 3: I think this radio show is brilliant, but all the
- 30:50Speaker 3: announcing you do at all the local events, what not
- 30:52Speaker 3: even local are they? They're up and down the County.
- 30:54Speaker 3: It's absolutely tremendous and I know that you've been a
- 30:57Speaker 3: previous winner of our Sports Trust Awards.
- 31:00Speaker 1: Another conversation we could have, yeah, but no, thank you
- 31:03Speaker 1: to you. Thanks very much, Paul. Right, Okay, I hope
- 31:07Speaker 1: you listeners out there have been taken always in just
- 31:10Speaker 1: be patient and we will get there. Okay, time for
- 31:13Speaker 1: a song now. This is from nineteen ninety one Rosella
- 31:16Speaker 1: and everybody's free. Yeah. Well, we're going to fade that
- 31:36Speaker 1: down a little bit because of that lovely interview with
- 31:40Speaker 1: Paul Carney there. Just did overrun a bit and why not.
- 31:43Speaker 1: I have so much to talk about. It was excellent
- 31:46Speaker 1: and just people are focused on just be patient. Sports
- 31:50Speaker 1: Center will be back. So it's cricket time now now.
- 31:53Speaker 1: And at the Three Hills, Folks on first eleven one
- 31:57Speaker 1: of the toss against the Wits the ball and decided
- 31:59Speaker 1: to bat, making two hundred and three for nine in
- 32:03Speaker 1: their fifty overs. My scorer was Chasil Melick with fifty six,
- 32:08Speaker 1: which will then stepped up to bat and with the
- 32:10Speaker 1: help of Byron Gould who made one hundred and four,
- 32:12Speaker 1: they hit the two hundred and six necessary in their
- 32:15Speaker 1: overs to win. The game by eight wickets. This week
- 32:18Speaker 1: it's an away game to face Canterbury first eleven in
- 32:22Speaker 1: the top of the table clash at the Grove between
- 32:24Speaker 1: second place Hive and leaders Hawkings. I've won the toss
- 32:28Speaker 1: and decided to bat and made one hundred and thirty
- 32:30Speaker 1: four all out. Overtook this figure scoring one hundred and
- 32:33Speaker 1: thirty seven for four. I scorer was John Durant fifty
- 32:37Speaker 1: nine not out, so they won the game by six
- 32:40Speaker 1: wickets and they pushed Hive down to third. So word
- 32:42Speaker 1: done Hawkins. Sadly sees Hawkins at home to Saint Lawrence
- 32:46Speaker 1: and Highland Court, whilst Hive travel away to take on
- 32:49Speaker 1: Canterbury third eleven. I've Green took a trip to north
- 32:54Speaker 1: Down in Thanet. Won the toss and decided to bat
- 32:56Speaker 1: and made one hundred and sixty seven for seven. They
- 32:59Speaker 1: then disposed of north Down in thirty two overs, who
- 33:01Speaker 1: could only make one hundred and twenty three for seven,
- 33:04Speaker 1: so the Green won the game by forty four runs.
- 33:07Speaker 1: This Saturday they're at home to Worth Cricket Club, who
- 33:09Speaker 1: last week beat salt With by just five runs in
- 33:12Speaker 1: what must have been a really exciting match. Worth won
- 33:15Speaker 1: the toss and decided to bat, making two hundred and
- 33:17Speaker 1: twenty five all out in their forty overs. I've then
- 33:21Speaker 1: nearly made it, they were just short. They scored two
- 33:23Speaker 1: hundred and twenty all out in their forty overs but
- 33:26Speaker 1: were five runs short. This Saturday, sort would are at
- 33:30Speaker 1: home to Herne Bay. Sipton Park were at home to Tunbridge.
- 33:34Speaker 1: Tunbridge won the toss and decided to bat, making one
- 33:36Speaker 1: hundred and ninety seven all out in another exciting finish
- 33:40Speaker 1: and the Sibs fell just seven runs short of that target,
- 33:44Speaker 1: making one hundred and ninety all out, so lost the
- 33:47Speaker 1: game by seven runs. This week the Sibs are away
- 33:50Speaker 1: to Bapchild Cricket Club, which means a trip to Sittingbourn. Now,
- 33:54Speaker 1: if you remember last week I was highlighting the amount
- 33:57Speaker 1: of extras in a game. Well I won't do that
- 33:59Speaker 1: this week, but I just want to point out one
- 34:01Speaker 1: particular game, which was that very close game between Worth
- 34:04Speaker 1: and Saltwood. We're Worth won by just five runs. Well,
- 34:08Speaker 1: in that game, Saltwood gave away thirty five runs in extras,
- 34:11Speaker 1: whilst Worth gave away a massive forty three runs, including
- 34:16Speaker 1: twenty one wides. So it just goes to show how
- 34:18Speaker 1: the amount of extras conceded in a match can influence
- 34:22Speaker 1: the finals. Gon. Well, the weather looks pretty good for Saturday,
- 34:26Speaker 1: just a slim chance of raining, so let's hope for
- 34:28Speaker 1: a full set of fixtures to be completed. Okay, we're
- 34:32Speaker 1: just gonna have another little song, but we might have
- 34:35Speaker 1: to cut this one short bit because I've got so
- 34:37Speaker 1: much more to get through, So listen out. This one
- 34:41Speaker 1: is from zach Abel and it's called Dance Review as
- 34:49Speaker 1: zach able there and dance with youw Okay, So we're
- 34:53Speaker 1: going to move on quickly to hockey. Last Friday the
- 34:56Speaker 1: Mixed Hockey League Stage four games. The results were as follows.
- 35:00Speaker 1: The Ops under twenty one three Canterbury Green two Opps
- 35:03Speaker 1: Blue Team one, Canterbury Red five, Mate Stone Iguana, Don's
- 35:08Speaker 1: a five deal Neil and South Saxon's won Cliftonville Neil
- 35:13Speaker 1: and a big thank you to Amy Bumpstead for all
- 35:15Speaker 1: that report. Now netball. Netball scores from last night. Panthers
- 35:21Speaker 1: forty seven Daisy She's the man of the match, A
- 35:24Speaker 1: Woman of the match, Start of the match I think
- 35:26Speaker 1: they called them. And Morsten thirty four Alex Woodpecker's forty four,
- 35:31Speaker 1: Annabelle Scorpions nineteen, Millie Black widow Is thirty six, Rachel
- 35:38Speaker 1: Ice thirty, Rebecca Rough Diamonds sixty one, Joe and Sting
- 35:43Speaker 1: raised twenty nine EVA and a big thank you to
- 35:47Speaker 1: Daniel Black for all those results. And as we said
- 35:50Speaker 1: in the past, if you want to get in touch
- 35:52Speaker 1: with the netball team, they've got a Facebook page, just
- 35:54Speaker 1: put in Folkston Netball League. Now, last Saturday our park
- 36:00Speaker 1: run tourists were out and about at the following venues.
- 36:03Speaker 1: Martin Salmon was in Ashford, Rachel Smith was in Canterbury.
- 36:08Speaker 1: Jonathan Drinkwater and Catherine Ann Curtis were in Abingdon, which
- 36:11Speaker 1: is like south of Oxford. Now I must admit I
- 36:15Speaker 1: thought the next one was a wind up. I'd never
- 36:17Speaker 1: heard of this place before or never heard of The
- 36:19Speaker 1: park run is called hobbling Well. I mean, what a
- 36:23Speaker 1: great name for a park run. Hobbling Well Well. Anyway,
- 36:25Speaker 1: that's near Orpington and kay Evans run that one. Christal
- 36:29Speaker 1: Clytier he ran at dulagch Caroline Curtis and Brent Parker
- 36:33Speaker 1: run at Sittingbourne. Debbe Jeffrey was first female home at
- 36:37Speaker 1: Reigate and the furthest trip away was made by Rosine
- 36:41Speaker 1: Bunt who run her park run at the older railway
- 36:44Speaker 1: track in Llangollen in Wales. They'd probably say at lang
- 36:47Speaker 1: Golan or something like that. Anyway, so there we go.
- 36:49Speaker 1: They're out in about and a big thank you to
- 36:51Speaker 1: folks and running and Athletic Club for all that information.
- 36:56Speaker 1: And just got to remind you that on the first
- 36:58Speaker 1: on the thirteenth of July, it's the first birthday of
- 37:02Speaker 1: the Radnor Park Junior Park Run Sunday at nine o'clock
- 37:05Speaker 1: and they want to see a full house there. They've
- 37:06Speaker 1: got a few little awards to give out, so if
- 37:09Speaker 1: you've never been to a park run, bring your child
- 37:11Speaker 1: along and experience what the park runs all about. Basically
- 37:15Speaker 1: it's two laps of Radnor Park and it doesn't matter
- 37:19Speaker 1: if you can't run it. A lot of parents go
- 37:21Speaker 1: along with their children and it's going to be a
- 37:24Speaker 1: great morning.
- 37:26Speaker 3: Now.
- 37:26Speaker 1: Yesterday I was EMC for the Shepway District Sports for
- 37:29Speaker 1: primary schools and accounts it actually it says twenty five.
- 37:33Speaker 1: I counted twenty nine schools with a maximum of eighteen
- 37:36Speaker 1: in a team, meant over five hundred children, although some
- 37:39Speaker 1: of the smaller schools bought a team of less than eighteen.
- 37:42Speaker 1: The Shepway Schools area stretches right down to Brooklyn five
- 37:45Speaker 1: miles past near Romney and up to Stellin Miss Stellin
- 37:49Speaker 1: Minis and Bodgym in Stone Street halfway to Canterbury. There
- 37:53Speaker 1: were races in four categories small, lower middle, upper middle
- 37:57Speaker 1: and large schools, with distances set at seventy and eighty
- 38:01Speaker 1: meters for the individual events and a sixty meter relay,
- 38:04Speaker 1: then eighteen meter relay for both boys and girls, and
- 38:08Speaker 1: there was also javelin and stand in long jump. Now
- 38:12Speaker 1: the schools categorized the number of pupils, so the winners
- 38:15Speaker 1: were in the small schools Well done to Elam the
- 38:19Speaker 1: lower middle schools and the result was a drawer never
- 38:22Speaker 1: heard of before. At the school sports there was a
- 38:25Speaker 1: draw between Morehall and Limb. The upper middle school winners
- 38:28Speaker 1: were Saltwood and the large winner Large school a winner
- 38:33Speaker 1: was Hawkings, so big world dons to Hawkins. There and
- 38:36Speaker 1: a bit of news hot off the press the Herald Cup.
- 38:39Speaker 1: Did you ever play in the Herald Cup? Bet you
- 38:43Speaker 1: did at that primary school? Well, would you believe it's
- 38:46Speaker 1: still going. And on Monday at Lydd's Ground, Sangay are
- 38:52Speaker 1: playing Hawkings in the Harold Cup. Does that take you
- 38:56Speaker 1: back a did you ever make the final and score
- 38:59Speaker 1: a goal? Oh? Man, that's just goes back so long
- 39:03Speaker 1: as a great trophy. That is okay, We're turning to
- 39:06Speaker 1: play a little bit of Kaiser Chiefs and I see
- 39:09Speaker 1: what else I can squeeze in. We've only got three
- 39:11Speaker 1: minutes to go.
- 39:12Speaker 2: The sound of Folkstone Radio Folkstone.
- 39:30Speaker 1: Well that's the Kaiser Chiefs there. People know how to
- 39:32Speaker 1: love one or other. I'm sorry if I'm cutting some
- 39:34Speaker 1: of these songs shorts, but there is a reason for it. Actually,
- 39:37Speaker 1: I'll tell you very shortly. So my birthday weekend, well
- 39:41Speaker 1: I went up to London and what a great time
- 39:43Speaker 1: we had that. We went to Borough Market, that's a
- 39:46Speaker 1: food market, and we did a tour of Tower Bridge.
- 39:50Speaker 1: You know that structure that goes right across Tower Bridge,
- 39:52Speaker 1: Well it's glass, some of it is glass and you
- 39:54Speaker 1: can walk a bottle walk across it and it's a
- 39:57Speaker 1: little bit scary. The the following day we took the
- 40:01Speaker 1: boat up to up the Thames, the Thames Clipper, and
- 40:05Speaker 1: then we went on a tour of the Cutty Sock.
- 40:08Speaker 1: I'd been really really good tourist. You know, the weather
- 40:10Speaker 1: was lovely and we had a fantastic time. And it's
- 40:15Speaker 1: just it's just got to get used to London prices,
- 40:18Speaker 1: you know. It does come as a bit of a
- 40:20Speaker 1: shot cut. One cross on was two pound fifty and
- 40:24Speaker 1: if you want to paint, if you want a pint
- 40:26Speaker 1: of anything, you've got to look at seven pound fifty
- 40:29Speaker 1: at least. Okay, well times running out, that's enough for me.
- 40:34Speaker 1: This weekend I should be on the mic at Maystone,
- 40:36Speaker 1: pretty muddy. I'll be on the finish line and that's
- 40:39Speaker 1: on Saturday. Then on Sunday I'm at bure Water for
- 40:43Speaker 1: a comparing a five or fifteen mile race. So Saturday
- 40:46Speaker 1: Sports Show I'll be in Maystone. Eighty is still on honeymoon.
- 40:50Speaker 1: I think he'd be back the following week. So what
- 40:53Speaker 1: can I say except I'll catch up with you next Thursday.
