  appreciative of the men's schedule that was handed to

  them. I I think this breaks incredibly

  well for them. The the home and homes are

  against teams that all finished below them last year.

  B Baylor, Kansas and of course Ohio State and maybe the two

  teams that most will have at the top of the heap when in their

  pre season in rankings, Houston and Texas Tech A only get them
• 0:51
  once and B you get them at Hilton Coliseum.

  This is a great schedule, Eugene.

  Yeah, it's definitely a great schedule and especially if

  you're a fan, you get to see these marquee matchups against

  Houston, TX, Tech and of course you get to travel to Baylor and

  Kansas for a home and away. So it's a really good break.

  Obviously we're going to have to see exactly how the dates line

  up and where things are in the schedule, but early indications

  it's a pretty good for Iowa State.

  You still have some good away games in there as well, like
• 1:21
  Arizona and BYU and of course K State.

  You can never overlook them, but overall you got to like how it's

  shaped out. Yeah, really sets up almost
• 1:30
  perfect guy. I don't know if if you would
• 1:31
  write out a schedule to win a conference championship along
• 1:36
  with yes, you'd like your double place be against the bottom for
• 1:39
  that to happen. But but all tools and having it
• 1:42
  be like this. I I think this sets up here.

  So let's start right there. Go back to a conversation,

  Eugene. We were having a lot in January.

  Is this team, as it looks right now, good enough to win a
• 1:52
  regular season championship? I think they'll certainly be in
• 1:55
  the mix. You look at who Iowa State is
• 1:57
  bringing back, yes, while they are bringing in eight or nine
• 2:01
  new players, 9 new players, technically the five players
• 2:04
  that they have back, they have 47% of their scoring production
• 2:08
  back. They have over 52% of their
• 2:10
  minutes playback that. Those are both marks that are
• 2:13
  atop the Big 12 between Joshua, Jefferson, Tame and Lipsy, Nate
• 2:17
  Heisey, Milliman, Chelovich and of course Cade Calderman.
• 2:20
  So they have a nice core to build off of.
• 2:22
  They're going to have a leg up when it comes to rebuilding
• 2:25
  chemistry compared to some of these other teams in the
• 2:27
  conference. So they should be, once again,
• 2:30
  very much in contention. Of course, you know, you got to
• 2:33
  see how all the pizzas fit. And there's a lot of new players
• 2:36
  across the board from Iowa State, but also just around the
• 2:39
  conference. But Iowa State right now is in a
• 2:42
  good position going into this offseason as they begin summer
• 2:45
  workouts on Monday. Maybe an unfair question to have
• 2:48
  you limited to one or two, but as you chronicled the newcomers
• 2:51
  that are coming who kind of stuck out to you, Eugene, who
• 2:54
  are you? Are you looking forward to
• 2:55
  seeing how their career unfolds from a, you know, journalistic
• 2:58
  perspective? Yeah, for the transfers, I'm
• 3:03
  intrigued by all of them just because they all seem like they
• 3:05
  have something to prove. But some of the guys that stick
• 3:07
  out to me is a guy like Dominic Nelson, WAC Player of the Year.
• 3:11
  He's a guy that's excel that every single level from having
• 3:14
  no offers at all coming out of high school to just owning his
• 3:19
  chance at junior college event, owning his First Division one
• 3:21
  opportunity at Utah Valley where he won conference player of the
• 3:24
  year. And now he's coming up to the
• 3:26
  big stage here in the Big 12 in Iowa State.
• 3:28
  He's a downhill guard, great slasher, loves excel to getting
• 3:32
  to the free throw line. But then just quickly looking at
• 3:35
  a guy like Blake Buchanan, who is a power conference forward at
• 3:38
  Virginia last year, I think he's someone who can start right
• 3:40
  away. He feels like he was completely
• 3:43
  underutilized. So, you know, if he can live up
• 3:45
  to to what he's already putting out there and he can improve and
• 3:49
  show different areas of his game that he hasn't shown already, I
• 3:51
  think he'll be able to unlock his potential here at Iowa
• 3:54
  State. And that'll only be fun to
• 3:56
  watch. And then that's where the
• 3:57
  freshman, you have a guy like Dominicus Pleito, who's not your
• 4:00
  typical freshman. He's coming in 20 years old.
• 4:02
  He's going to be 21 by the time the season starts.
• 4:05
  And he already has a couple of years playing pro ball against
• 4:07
  grown men in Germany. So you have a guy like that and
• 4:11
  he's another versatile forward who can do it all.
• 4:13
  You put him alongside Joshua Jefferson, or maybe he can learn
• 4:16
  from Joshua Jefferson and he'll will be some guy that contribute
• 4:20
  right away. And Killian Turay is another guy
• 4:22
  that that's just dynamic, dynamic defender and flasher.
• 4:25
  And of course, the Wisconsinite Xavion Mitchell was Mr.
• 4:28
  Basketball and then Jamarian Bateman, who was the highest
• 4:31
  recruit in this incoming class. There's a lot of guys to be
• 4:34
  excited for. So yeah, really, honestly, I
• 4:37
  just want I can't wait to see how things shake out come these
• 4:41
  offseason workouts. I can't wait to hear what rumors
• 4:44
  are coming out for like who's looking good and and how certain
• 4:46
  guys are fitting in with one another.
• 4:48
  So it's going to be a very exciting offseason.

  You have wrote about a number of those incoming true freshman
• 4:54
  over at desmoinesregister.com and Bateman, as he said he's the
• 4:58
  highest rank to them. Is he the guy that has the most
• 5:01
  realistic one that can find, you know, even 10/12/15 minutes a
• 5:05
  game? Would it be Bateman for you or
• 5:06
  somebody else? Yeah, I think Bateman just with
• 5:10
  his ability to score and also just play defense, he's he's a
• 5:14
  guy that just has the highest potential, just has he has the
• 5:18
  frame, he has the mindset. I think if he could put on some
• 5:20
  weight and if he can, you know, rumble with the Big 12 and just
• 5:24
  get his body ready for the physicality.

  I think he's some guy that can contribute minutes right away
• 5:29
  And and also, Dominicus pleaded. Just just based off sheer age,
• 5:33
  sheer experience already, he's going to be 21 by the time the
• 5:36
  season starts. So I think those two freshmen
• 5:38
  can easily work their way into the rotation.
• 5:41
  When, when do you think T JS last year, I'm trying to
• 5:44
  remember was it late June or early July that we started to
• 5:47
  get some Intel via media opportunities for you guys to
• 5:52
  cover them on a daily basis too and not necessarily watch
• 5:56
  practice, but certainly talk to them after practice.

  Refresh my memory, as far as timeline, do you do you recall?

  I think it it might have actually been late July into
• 6:05
  August like some sometime around there, but but I'll have to
• 6:08
  double check that. I hope it's earlier though, I

  tell you that. It was earlier, I think it was

  before football media days, because we were starving for

  content and so appreciative that he was letting us look behind

  the curtain. I could be wrong, but I remember

  it that way anyway regardless. Little football, there's, it's

  recruiting time, right? That's what June is.

  It's recruiting. What do you get over at the

  register? I'm always interested.

  Of course there's, you know, what Alec Bussey does over what

  Bill Seals does. Those guys that are on the

  recruiting websites for you guys in the newspaper industry, how

  important is recruiting and what's happening here this

  month, specifically on the football side of things?

  Yeah, recruiting is very important, especially this time
• 6:47
  of year where it feels like we're all just chomping at the
• 6:50
  bit for any sort of activity from Matt Campbell and his guys.
• 6:55
  You know, we're waiting for Big 12 media day to start in July,
• 6:58
  and then we've got the Iowa State media day and of course,
• 7:01
  camp to come later in July and early August.
• 7:04
  So right now it's really just recruitment watch, just checking
• 7:09
  up on what all these high school athletes and what all these
• 7:12
  talented targets are looking like.

  Of course there are some rumors and of course there were some
• 7:16
  things like that. But right now, to me, like one
• 7:18
  of the most compelling storylines is what is Jet Tamala
• 7:21
  going to do? And while that's going on, you
• 7:24
  just saw Matt Campbell and Ryan Clanton iron down a couple of
• 7:28
  great offensive tackles to help bolster that 2026 class, which
• 7:32
  right now is looking to be the highest ranked ever in the Matt
• 7:35
  Campbell era. And I'd have to double check,
• 7:37
  but it could be the highest ever in Iowa State football history.

  How are they doing ticket wise? Have you heard anything?
• 7:43
  Has there been any release as far as ticket sales are going
• 7:47
  for the upcoming season? Not quite yet.

  That's something that I, I hope to have more Intel on next month
• 7:54
  as we draw closer into the season.

  I have heard though, you know, just from talking with Jamie

  Pollard and, and some of the guys in the athletic department,

  the interest for Ireland has been really, really high and

  they've actually been selling a good amount.

  And, and I've also had just so many different Iowa State fans

  reach out to me telling me how excited they are to go to

  Ireland, which is, which is great.

  You know, it's not only great for the team but you know for a

  community, like how often do you get to go to Ireland especially?

  We watch a football game, so it's going to be a good trip

  overall. Yeah, it's such an important

  game. It's crazy to think that a game,

  August the 23rd is so pivotal, pivotal to how this season is

  going to turn. I mean, it's huge for both
• 8:32
  teams, for K State as well as Iowa State.

  Is both of these teams going to be picked toward the top?

  footballs, basketballs. It's really, really special for,

  for these kids to get this sports equipment.

  And part of the reason I fell in love with this, I obviously love

  playing sports. We talk about sports for a

  that, you know, wants to play sports to be able to do so.
