- 0:05Guess who's back, back again. I am back. It's
- 0:08time for this week's edition of the Respec Ramblings
- 0:11podcast. I'm here, Alex Donaldson. I'm here with
- 0:14Tom Ory, Dave Breenes and Mikhail Badnani. I've
- 0:18been away for a few weeks. I had Gamescom and
- 0:20then I came back from Gamescom hideously ill,
- 0:23which some of it admittedly was self -inflicted.
- 0:27And also very, very busy because there was a
- 0:29lot of games. So I'm back. Tom, you've held down
- 0:32the fort admirably. everyone was like everyone
- 0:35was like you're amazing at hosting this all the
- 0:38comments if you go to the youtube version of
- 0:40this the comments are flooded with like tom's
- 0:43the best get keep tom's the host he's so funny
- 0:47they'll be sad i'm back but they don't have to
- 0:50be sad for very long because i'm going to take
- 0:51a game show so it's back to you next week anyway
- 0:54how are you doing aside from you know being adulated
- 0:58with praise how's it going tom yeah right just
- 1:00uh There's quite a lot of stuff happening on
- 1:03the site at the moment. There's some games out.
- 1:07Some games are good. Some games, not so good.
- 1:13That's a thing that happens. But yeah, it's all
- 1:15right. This is going to be a pretty packed episode.
- 1:18A lot's happened this week. Brains, how are you
- 1:20doing? Feeling good. I'm feeling tired. I'm ready
- 1:24for games to start happening now. I hate to tell
- 1:28you, we're only at the start. This is where it
- 1:31goes crazy for a bit. Mikhail, how are you coping
- 1:34with the madness? I'm good. I'm good. Just literally
- 1:38put like five games on download an hour before
- 1:41we started recording it. And I made sure to pause
- 1:43them because I don't want to like mess that up.
- 1:44But yeah, a lot, a lot happening. Enjoying like
- 1:48watching some classic movies as well. We'll talk
- 1:51about that as well. But yeah, otherwise good.
- 1:53Well, yeah, we'll talk about that. I think so
- 1:56much has happened. Let's just jump clean in to
- 1:59our first news topic this week, which is, of
- 2:01course, had a big week with Nintendo. So we had
- 2:05two Nintendo Directs, which I think, is this
- 2:07the first time ever we've had two Directs in
- 2:09one week? I think that's gotta be. I think that's
- 2:14gotta be correct. I can't remember the last time
- 2:16they were done. a standalone and a showcase one
- 2:19for lots of stuff but yeah i feel like it has
- 2:21happened but i'm really struggling i'm really
- 2:23struggling yeah i think they've just done a movie
- 2:26like a dedicated movie thing and then that would
- 2:28be different yeah but here we had like a proper
- 2:30what happened with the mario thing remember when
- 2:33they had the the 3d all -stars like which was
- 2:36was that a separate thing before the normal direct
- 2:38or was that just its own thing whenever there's
- 2:41a big anniversary for one of the big series that
- 2:43that the big anniversary always gets its own
- 2:45direct But the difference here was that the two
- 2:49were next to each other, like, you know, a day
- 2:51apart. I'm quite surprised. I guess you're asking
- 2:53people to sit down for nearly two hours then.
- 2:55I was going to say, I'm quite surprised they
- 2:56didn't just back -to -back them because they've
- 2:57done that before where they've handed off a direct
- 3:01into a specialist direct. And they quite often
- 3:07do the handoff into Treehouse Live, right? In
- 3:09fact, they did that this week. That would have
- 3:10been like five hours then. Yeah, yeah. So, yeah,
- 3:14first of all, we had the Zelda 40th. Obviously,
- 3:17there's a main thing we're all going to have
- 3:19some opinions on, I think. But before that, they
- 3:23announced the title of the Zelda movie. Surprised
- 3:26by it. I was a bit surprised. Well, I think,
- 3:28to be fair, right, they did the whole thing of
- 3:32the Super Mario Bros. movie. It wasn't called
- 3:33Super Mario Bros. It was called the Super Mario
- 3:35Bros. movie. And so... the legend of Zelda well
- 3:39this is the thing people could have assumed that
- 3:41they could have done that again but the thing
- 3:43that I've been saying since the start is clearly
- 3:46it's not going to be like I saw someone on blue
- 3:49sky some some miserable bastard going like oh
- 3:53it's just going to be do you know how little
- 3:55that narrows it down well yeah but they were
- 3:58going oh it's just going to be member berry slop
- 4:00and I was like man like that's what the Mario
- 4:03movie is because there's been studies done and
- 4:08unfortunately it's ruined children's movies as
- 4:10any dad will tell you or mom but um it hasn't
- 4:13ruined them there are good ones out there like
- 4:15you get your incantos stuff like that but there's
- 4:16there's literally a study about oh who knows
- 4:20if it's down to tiktok or what but like kids
- 4:22attention spans are x amount of time and that's
- 4:27turned into studios like illumination going well
- 4:28if you make a movie there has to be something
- 4:30new and shiny every 90 seconds or whatever And
- 4:34so that is the logic through which the Mario
- 4:38movie is made. I think you could probably sit
- 4:40there at the stopwatch and time, you know, how
- 4:44long before each major, oh, something new and
- 4:46exciting is happening. But this is very, like,
- 4:50even that, they didn't show anything in the direct.
- 4:52They just showed that logo treatment. But you
- 4:54know what that logo treatment reminded me of?
- 4:56One million percent. Middle chunk. Middle chunk
- 5:02to back half. of the harry potter movies the
- 5:05harry potter movies started out with those logos
- 5:07that are like you know whimsical oh kids movie
- 5:09and then as obviously they become teenagers and
- 5:12they start doing this minor key version of that
- 5:14john williams theme right and all that sort of
- 5:17stuff and it gave me those vibes and so it strikes
- 5:21me that that is the audience that they're going
- 5:23to be going for they're going to be going for
- 5:2413 14 15 year olds um so zelda just has more
- 5:31of it obvious plot as well right it has more
- 5:34of an obvious thing that can run through the
- 5:36actual story rather than just character reveals
- 5:38like it's like Mario was always going to be a
- 5:42hard one for like an engaging story right because
- 5:45essentially like you jump around fight bosses
- 5:49and then do the same thing again um Zelda always
- 5:53has a more obvious like classic story I guess
- 5:55um yeah not much to say about it it's like it's
- 5:59a it's a it's a title yeah i think we'll probably
- 6:02get a trailer pretty soon now but i'm hopeful
- 6:05for it because like the guy they've got directing
- 6:07it directed those maze runner movies which of
- 6:09the slew of like harry potter's big we want to
- 6:12make young adult novels into movies where there
- 6:15was a lot of those in that period of like the
- 6:172010s the maze runner trilogy was among the better
- 6:21ones and then he also did kingdom of the planet
- 6:23the apes which is pretty good um and like you
- 6:26look at it and it's like the producer's the guy
- 6:28who did all the early marvel films all like the
- 6:30original sam raimi spider -man movies and the
- 6:34cinematographers like the guy who has got some
- 6:36really good good shit on that list like he did
- 6:39that planet of the apes movie with that guy but
- 6:41he also did like the jumanji reboot and um that
- 6:45metallica movie um the concert film like he cinematographed
- 6:51that and that's a really good one so anyway that's
- 6:53out april 30th we'll learn more and i'm sure
- 6:55we'll discuss it more uh there's a bunch of new
- 6:58merch master swords playable ocarinas etc etc
- 7:01there's a concert series um shout out to friend
- 7:05of the sites thomas um who runs game concerts
- 7:09a german company and he's been tapped to do that
- 7:13at least for the western dates which is super
- 7:15super cool um and of course last but not least
- 7:18uh ocarina of time out november 5th um we sort
- 7:23of got the reveal that this is go about the lego
- 7:26did they not reveal a lego they did reveal a
- 7:28lego yeah it's i don't know it's sort of we if
- 7:31it was new and we'd never had zelda lego before
- 7:33i'd be like oh but it's you can look it up it's
- 7:38a it's a large scale lego so you're building
- 7:40link and epona out of bricks and It's fine. That's
- 7:45how Lego works, isn't it? You use bricks. Yes,
- 7:47but what I'm getting at is the last two Zelda
- 7:50sets they did were play sets. So they came with
- 7:53the minifigs and this is more of a display piece.
- 7:58And I personally think that's less inherently
- 8:00interesting. I like play sets. I mean, this is
- 8:03the big thing with Lego Mario, right? Next month,
- 8:05they're finally moving away from that. with a
- 8:11screen in it where it played Mario music and
- 8:13stuff. And they're just literally putting out
- 8:15sets with little mini figures where kids can
- 8:18make their own. And they're really cheap as well.
- 8:20Like the cheapest one of those is like eight
- 8:21pounds, which is exactly where Mario Lego should
- 8:23be. Not 60 quid for a starter kit. But anyway,
- 8:28yeah, there is a new Lego. There's new merch.
- 8:30There's the new concert series. And then Ocarina
- 8:31of Time. We got the reveal, but it's quite faithful,
- 8:37but not 100%. I mean, first of all, Brynj, what
- 8:42did you make? What were you expecting and did
- 8:45it match that or was it different? I have no
- 8:48idea what I was expecting anymore. I just have
- 8:50no clue. I'm like, whatever, we'll take it. But
- 8:54like, I don't know. I obviously, like many people,
- 8:57I had that image of the wee baby Link, the top
- 9:00-down shot from the first trailer from a few
- 9:02months ago. And I was like, just going to imagine
- 9:05that, but more of it. And I still wasn't prepared.
- 9:08I still wasn't prepared. I think like a lot of
- 9:10people, when it went from Aonuma presenting to
- 9:14just Link studying Kokiri Forest, I, like a lot
- 9:18of people, sort of recoiled away. Like, hey.
- 9:22And I've had to really think about it. Over the
- 9:25course of watching that trailer, I went from
- 9:27recoiling to actually being like, hold on, hold
- 9:30on. This ain't bad. Hold on. And I think I've
- 9:34watched it multiple times. I've had to have a
- 9:36really, really long think about it. And ultimately,
- 9:40if it weren't for the fact that the original
- 9:43game existed, I wouldn't have had that reaction,
- 9:46you know? Like I'm having this visceral reaction
- 9:49to it because it's something familiar to me that's
- 9:52suddenly not familiar, you know? I don't think
- 9:56it's because it's inherently ugly or bad. I do
- 9:59agree with some of the criticisms, like Link's
- 10:01tunic is a little bit detail heavy. I do. I think
- 10:06honestly what does it is the leather. Smack the
- 10:10microphone about the leather. whatever garb he's
- 10:13got going on over the tunic now i noticed they've
- 10:16just kept adding belts because in the n64 original
- 10:18he had one belt around the waist and then two
- 10:20i think two i think waist and across the chest
- 10:23the 3ds version added across the chest these
- 10:26and they just keep adding leather you two are
- 10:29sad aren't you yes what is going on um yeah no
- 10:33we I don't know. I think there is a case of it
- 10:37being slightly over -designed. I do feel like
- 10:39a game like this, you want a child to be able
- 10:42to draw a somewhat faithful replica of it. You
- 10:46know what I mean? That's how I think about character
- 10:49designs. Can a child draw it? And I think with
- 10:51all that leather crap, probably not. So I think
- 10:54it is a little bit over -designed. But other
- 10:55than that, I'm taking a step back. I'm thinking
- 10:58about it. I'm like, you know what? I think it
- 11:00looks pretty good, actually. It grew on me. A
- 11:02bit like Star Fox. I started out and I was like,
- 11:05and then by the time I'd watched it two or three
- 11:07times, I was like, okay, I get it. And some of
- 11:10the details are quite cool. Like I noticed how
- 11:11Adult Link, the leather like plate that he's
- 11:14got, armor that he's got on his chest is like
- 11:17engraved or like pressed where it's got the outline
- 11:20of the owl's face in it, which is super cool.
- 11:23So I don't know what you were going to say to
- 11:24me. No, just thinking about Star Fox actually,
- 11:28because Star Fox, the new remake is the first
- 11:31time I've actually finished it and I enjoyed
- 11:32it a lot. I do not like N64 games and how they
- 11:36control. I couldn't stand Ocarina of Time when
- 11:38I tried it on Nintendo Switch Online. I love
- 11:41the 3DS version, to be clear. So when I look
- 11:44at this, it's with those eyes. And yeah, when
- 11:48I saw Link, I thought he looked awful. I still
- 11:51think he looks awful, but this looks like it
- 11:54controls really well. And it looks like it has
- 11:56quote -unquote normal controls. and i'm like
- 11:59the most pro remake person thank you brains uh
- 12:02so yeah like i am i'm totally on for that and
- 12:05they sold it to me in the end when they said
- 12:07uh we have gold foil on the cover like i fall
- 12:10for all that crap like the physical shit so yeah
- 12:13like i was like i'm i'm in for that the did you
- 12:16give the song a listen the the title theme which
- 12:19they released on nintendo music for from the
- 12:21remake the new arrangement yeah it sounds lovely
- 12:24yeah so that's what that's another thing i'm
- 12:27excited about because this probably means we'll
- 12:29actually get an ocarina of time soundtrack available
- 12:32normally don't have to rely on this bullshit
- 12:35because they release like the the breath of the
- 12:37wild cdr blank discs for sale they release the
- 12:40tears of the kingdom soundtrack and i think they'll
- 12:43do this also so i'm also excited about that hey
- 12:45i mean they did really i've got definitely the
- 12:48n64 soundtrack on cd It might have been the Club
- 12:51Nintendo thing because it wasn't available normally.
- 12:54That's why. No, I think it was in Japan. I think
- 12:57it was in Japan. Oh, I see. It was those days
- 12:59then, the late 90s, early noughties, where nothing
- 13:03got released in the West, but you could import
- 13:05the soundtrack CDs from PlayAsia or whatever.
- 13:07I'm pretty sure I got Ocarina of Time 3D soundtrack
- 13:10as well. But yeah, I mean, either way, it's one
- 13:11of the best game soundtracks ever, I think. And
- 13:14so to have all that orchestrated brains has got,
- 13:16is that Twilight Princess? Yeah, Twilight Princess
- 13:19HD and apparently A Link Between Worlds. A Link
- 13:21Between Worlds. As bad that I could get those
- 13:23just from that. A Link Between Worlds is amazing.
- 13:27What I will say about the art is Takaya Imamura,
- 13:31who is an ex -Nintendo guy, he's one of the creators
- 13:33of Star Fox, pointed out something interesting,
- 13:35which he was like, I can see Miyamoto's love
- 13:40of puppets coming through on this. And Miyamoto's
- 13:43Love of Puppets is something that runs through
- 13:44a lot of his games. So Star Fox obviously was
- 13:48very much inspired by Thunderbirds and Stingray
- 13:53and all those shows. And then you've got like
- 13:57when they started redoing the 2D Zelda's Link's
- 14:00Awakening and Link Between Worlds and Echoes
- 14:05of Wisdom, all those have a sort of doll -esque
- 14:07look as well. And even Enuma, I don't know how
- 14:14accurate this is, but the story is allegedly
- 14:16that Enuma got hired by Miyamoto because Enuma
- 14:20had done a load of puppet design and puppet stuff
- 14:24as part of his coursework at university. And
- 14:28when Miyamoto saw that portfolio, he was like,
- 14:30yep, you're the guy. And obviously he became
- 14:32the Zelda guy and now he's passing the torch
- 14:34down to Fujibayashi. But so there is that as
- 14:38well, because Link does look quite doll -like.
- 14:41But there is a funny thing going on where it's
- 14:42like, there's definitely a big difference between
- 14:44the hero character models, Link, Zelda, Ganondorf,
- 14:48Impa, the other sages, and the generic NPCs.
- 14:53And I think that can be a little bit, so in the
- 14:55market down and stuff, that can be a little bit
- 14:57jarring. But also, I guess that's part of the
- 15:00original game as well. The N64 version was like
- 15:04that too. One other thing that I think is quite
- 15:06cool is if you look at all the designs. They're
- 15:10clearly taking all the Zelda series since into
- 15:13mind. So a really good example is like Sheik's
- 15:17Harp. They have always said that Sheik's Harp
- 15:20and the harp that Zelda plays in Skyward Sword
- 15:22were the same harp. Since Skyward Sword released,
- 15:25they were like, that's the same harp. But they
- 15:26didn't really look the same exactly. It now looks
- 15:29the same. And things like Mido, the shitty dude
- 15:35in Kokori Forest. Tom's just, like, shaking his
- 15:39head at all this. He's got, like, not tattoos,
- 15:43but, like, you know how tribal, they'll use chalk
- 15:45or whatever. He has all this tribal stuff down
- 15:47his arms. And the tribal stuff that Maido's got
- 15:49down his arms in this remake is exactly the same
- 15:52as the tattoos that Princess Sonia has in Tears
- 15:56of the Kingdom. So it's like this whole thing
- 15:58of, like... Yeah, of course, you noticed it straight
- 16:01away. So it's cool to see, and the Kakari sword
- 16:05looks like a sword that is in Breath of the Wild,
- 16:07as like a sword that was created by the Kakari
- 16:09and all the rest. So I like that they're doing
- 16:12that stuff. Did you have any thoughts, Tom? I
- 16:16don't know if you were. Are you a big Zelda person?
- 16:18Yeah, I... I don't know. Yeah, I think I write
- 16:24about playing this on the website even, which
- 16:27I've seen you read. You also own this website.
- 16:32So, yeah, I do like Ocarina of Time. It's like
- 16:35one of the, like, standout games from when I
- 16:39was, like, I don't know how old I was, 15, maybe?
- 16:4215, 16, I don't know. I remember going to buy
- 16:45it, get the gold cartridge from Dixon's. No,
- 16:48false. We never got a gold cartridge in Europe.
- 16:50I'm sure I did. I'm sure I got a gold cartridge.
- 16:52Majora's Mask was a gold cartridge. That was
- 16:55the one. Yeah, yeah. Whatever. But yeah, when
- 16:59I saw this, I was like immediately sick everywhere.
- 17:02All over blue sky. I was just, just get it out.
- 17:06Um, couldn't believe it. Terrible looking game.
- 17:11Awful. No, I liked it immediately. Like I thought
- 17:14this looks great. And then I saw everyone be
- 17:17like losing it on social media about it. I was
- 17:20like, what's going on? But I can't, it looks
- 17:22exactly like I'd want a new version of this game
- 17:26to look like nothing about it. It's bad to me.
- 17:29It looks great. The fact it looks, I thought
- 17:31it wouldn't look even near as good as this, to
- 17:33be honest, like in terms of like what it's running
- 17:35on. I know the Switch 2 is like semi -capable,
- 17:39but it's still like underpowered compared to
- 17:42everything else we've got, right, in terms of
- 17:44hardware. But it looks great. Showed it to my
- 17:48son. He loves it. Yeah, I just think it looks
- 17:52great. I think the stuff they've done to make
- 17:54it. feel a bit more modern is good like if you
- 17:58do go back and play the n64 game it's fine if
- 18:01you haven't played that before you'd probably
- 18:03be like what the fuck's going on with some of
- 18:05this stuff um so i'm happy they've made some
- 18:09tweaks and stuff like if you still want to go
- 18:10and play it it's still there right you can go
- 18:12and play it on uh switch it's on i assume it's
- 18:17on the switch online bit right um and the ds
- 18:20the 3ds version exists which is pretty good um
- 18:24yeah I liked it. I even liked the look of young
- 18:29Link. I thought Link looks fine. He just looks
- 18:36like a little young little kid running around
- 18:39doing stuff. I will say, I think to what you
- 18:46said about the original is still available, Nintendo
- 18:48are the best at sort of saying... Well, the best
- 18:54is sort of going, you know what? This remake
- 18:56is a remake, but the original still exists. And
- 18:58part of the reason for that is credit to them.
- 19:01There are other companies, lesser companies,
- 19:04you might say, where if they had a service like
- 19:06Nintendo Switch Online, what they would try to
- 19:09do, and you see this with companies like Square
- 19:10Enix sometimes where they put out a new Final
- 19:12Fantasy, they put out the Pixel remasters and
- 19:14they delisted all the previous ones from Steam.
- 19:17But Nintendo's like, look, you want to play Ocarina
- 19:20of Time. The N64 one is on Nintendo Switch Online
- 19:23and that's still there for you to enjoy. Or you
- 19:25can play the new one. And probably, we're probably
- 19:27not that far off from like the 3DS version being
- 19:30on NSO as well. And I really respect them for
- 19:33that. It's like, you know, there's how many different
- 19:35versions of the original Super Mario Brothers
- 19:37are technically available on Switch? Because
- 19:39like you've got the NES version and the Mario
- 19:42All -Stars version. And then, you know, yeah,
- 19:46it's pretty cool. You can't buy those, right?
- 19:49this is the first time you can buy a remake for
- 19:52I guess Star Fox also but you could play Star
- 19:55Fox on NSO you know what I mean yeah I know but
- 19:58like I think the audience for obviously the remakes
- 20:01audience is people who've played it before but
- 20:03it's also people like me so with this they want
- 20:05people who've played Breath of the Wild and Tears
- 20:07of the Kingdom because that like Breath of the
- 20:09Wild specifically sold like a shitload more than
- 20:11every other game combined for them so there's
- 20:14that audience that has not played those classic
- 20:16games that's why everyone wants wind waker twilight
- 20:19princess on switch because like no one has played
- 20:22those on the old hardware and now you're getting
- 20:24a way to play like quote -unquote one of the
- 20:27most important games of all time which is also
- 20:29a classic zelda so i think that and you can't
- 20:32buy the 3ds thing right like it's they shut down
- 20:34the shop or whatever i'm the only fool who has
- 20:37extra copies in case anyone here needs so yeah
- 20:42Yeah, but I think they can't delist stuff from
- 20:45NSO, can they? I mean, they could, obviously,
- 20:48but it feels like you're not losing anything.
- 20:51They absolutely could, dude. They absolutely
- 20:52could. And like I say, there are other companies
- 20:55where they would make the argument of, well,
- 20:58are people actually going to buy this one -to
- 20:59-one Star Fox remake if they can play the original
- 21:02NSO? You know, as part of their subscription,
- 21:04we should delist it to be safe. And they don't
- 21:07do that. In fact, they're actively sort of putting
- 21:10out, you know, it's yeah i just i i think it's
- 21:15great that obviously there's weird exceptions
- 21:16there's like it's i mean pokemon That's the Pokemon
- 21:20company, not Nintendo. But it's clear they're
- 21:22never going to put the old Pokemon games on NSO.
- 21:24What they're going to do is re -release them
- 21:26one by one as they did with FireRed, LeafGreen,
- 21:28which I don't love, but I get it. And also there's
- 21:31arguments there about connecting to Pokemon Home
- 21:33and all that sort of crap. But I just think it's...
- 21:36I think the one thing on this topic that is really
- 21:38telling is they had that chart up of all the
- 21:40Zelda games you can play on the Switch. And apart
- 21:44from handheld exclusive stuff... like Triforce
- 21:48Heroes, which is a 3DS game, the only one that
- 21:50wasn't on that list as playable was Twilight
- 21:52Princess. So obviously Wind Waker is on GameCube
- 21:55NSO now. So the question is, what are they going
- 21:58to do there? Are they going to wait and have
- 22:02Twilight Princess just drop onto NSO? Or is there
- 22:05something more going on with that game? Are they
- 22:09going to reissue the HD one or what? I hope they
- 22:13do. I don't want to play the Wii controller shit
- 22:16version or whatever. Well, no, you could play
- 22:18the GameCube version. That's the point. They
- 22:20could put the GameCube one on NSO. And that'd
- 22:24be interesting because that was a version because
- 22:25there was a whole thing with that game is Link
- 22:27is always left -handed. I think because Miyamoto
- 22:29is left -handed, I believe. Most Japanese people,
- 22:32I believe. Really? Yeah. They write from, what
- 22:37is it, right to left. And we write from left
- 22:39to right. They write. Yeah, but it's like when
- 22:41you have a baby and long before they're writing,
- 22:45their dominant hand emerges. So I just thought
- 22:47there was a human nature thing where we tended
- 22:50to favor 70 -30 our right side. I think it might
- 22:53be a slight case of nurture, but we have to dig
- 22:55into this. Anyway, the point is, Link is usually
- 23:01always left -handed. And what they did for Twilight
- 23:03Princess, obviously they designed it for the
- 23:05GameCube. And then when they were retooling it
- 23:08for the Wii, they... wanted to make Link right
- 23:10-handed because they realized that people would
- 23:12be holding the Wii Remote in their right hand.
- 23:15And instead of just making Link right -handed,
- 23:17they flipped the whole game. So the whole of
- 23:19Hyrule is back to front on the Wii version. You
- 23:22know, like Death Mountain's technically on the
- 23:24wrong side compared to the other games, stuff
- 23:26like that. But the GameCube version was the right
- 23:28way around. And they used that version as the
- 23:31basis for the HD version on Wii U. So I'm curious,
- 23:34do they just put the GameCube one up on its own?
- 23:37Like sod it and it's just playable? I mean, I
- 23:39think they should. I think they probably will
- 23:42as well, regardless, right? And before we move
- 23:45on from Zelda, I'd like to say two things. One
- 23:47of the weird Nintendo exceptions, the whole remake,
- 23:51re -release conversation we were just having,
- 23:53for some reason, and it is slightly different,
- 23:56Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze. For some
- 23:59reason, they did delist that on the digital Wii
- 24:01U store when the Switch version came out. It's
- 24:04closer, obviously, than a remake, but... that
- 24:08doesn't matter now since the weaver and like
- 24:10he's dead anyway but you know um and then also
- 24:12i want to say in ocarina of time in the remake
- 24:14when when link got into a pyro castle town market
- 24:17i think it looks so good i was actually sort
- 24:20of sat there like this looks like the walkthrough
- 24:23we saw the other day for fable yeah except it's
- 24:27running on switch too i you know what i would
- 24:29actually go a little further i you know i haven't
- 24:31actually had it's one of the things i'm going
- 24:33to try and do this afternoon is write about fable
- 24:34but um I actually think graphically this looks
- 24:38better than Fable. It's pretty crazy. It's probably
- 24:41pushing less polygons, but it's got style. Well,
- 24:44I think Fable actually sort of is a little bit
- 24:47lacking in style, especially compared to the
- 24:50old Fable games. Everyone was so exaggerated,
- 24:52but they made a decision to scan real people
- 24:54in. Anyway, that's another topic for another
- 24:56time. I think it looks really good. I will say
- 24:58the castle town and stuff is interesting. I can't
- 25:00wait to see the other areas because... castle
- 25:03town is like it's the same area but they've completely
- 25:05redone the layout and it's like the one shot
- 25:08of kakariko village in the trailer you can see
- 25:11that everything's moved around um like the building
- 25:15site is towards the front of the town now whereas
- 25:17it used to be towards the back it seems like
- 25:18the well is off to the side so it seems like
- 25:20that's how they're going to make hyrule feel
- 25:22bigger and actually on this topic last thing
- 25:24i want to say on zelda it's really impressive
- 25:28how hyrule field is basically the same size right
- 25:30but They've made it feel so much bigger by just
- 25:34adding topography. Just hills. That's all they've
- 25:38done. And it feels massive by comparison. It's
- 25:40really fascinating because the original is so
- 25:42flat. The skyline looks so good. Sorry, Nakai.
- 25:46What if they made it like Rebirth's open world?
- 25:50Well, maybe we can talk about that in a bit.
- 25:52Okay, just one last thing about Zelda. What do
- 25:54we think about the hardware? Like the controller,
- 25:56the console and stuff. What do we think? It's
- 25:59all right. It's for dweebs, isn't it? All that
- 26:04stuff's for dweebs. It pisses me off a little
- 26:06bit because I get annoyed. As someone who plays
- 26:09his Switch mostly in handheld, unless I'm capturing
- 26:12or something, I don't want to have to buy a whole
- 26:15new Switch. I would love if they just put out
- 26:17those Joy -Cons, but instead my options are a
- 26:19whole new console or buy the Pro Controller.
- 26:22Even if you make the Joy -Con release a little
- 26:25bit different so that the console ones are unique.
- 26:30Just put out some Joy -Cons, for God's sake.
- 26:32That's my one criticism. I have one last question
- 26:38because it was mentioned earlier before we got
- 26:40off Zelda. I know we've gone long on Zelda already.
- 26:42But it was mentioned about how we haven't had
- 26:45a traditional Zelda apart from the 2D style one
- 26:48for a while. Do you think this penetrates with
- 26:52that new audience that found Breath of the Wild?
- 26:54I noticed... A friend of the pod, Chris Dring,
- 26:57on his thing, pointed out how many people watched
- 27:01that Direct. The Zelda Direct peaked at 2 .1
- 27:07million viewers. Now, by comparison, right? GTA
- 27:116 on Netflix managed 4 .1. Insane. The State
- 27:15of Play last week peaked at a million. Gamescom
- 27:18Opening Night Live peaked at 2 million. And the
- 27:22Mario Kart World... specific direct they did
- 27:24in the run -up to switch to launch didn't even
- 27:27make a million it got like a little over 900
- 27:28000 so it strikes that and the trailer is already
- 27:33at like 60 million views something crazy so it
- 27:35strikes that that this maybe has a chance but
- 27:39what do you think Being what? It could be the
- 27:43best -selling Zelda. Yeah, as being as successful
- 27:46as Breath of the Wild. I think it depends. The
- 27:51problem with Breath of the Wild was the game,
- 27:53wasn't it, for Switch, right? So it had that
- 27:54going for everyone who, well, a load of people
- 27:57bought that with a Switch. This isn't quite the
- 27:59same thing. I think it's going to do massively
- 28:01well. Probably second best -selling Zelda of
- 28:05all time, I reckon, behind Breath of the Wild,
- 28:07once the dust has settled a bit. Yeah, I think
- 28:11it's interesting that a lot of people are like,
- 28:12this looks shit, and they're more like, I'm going
- 28:14to buy it anyway. It's just like... I mean, that's
- 28:17just how most online people are just like that.
- 28:20Like, it's with Pokemon, right? It's the worst
- 28:23Pokemon game ever. They've cut everything. I'm
- 28:25buying the double pack. So that's just how people
- 28:27are. It's that image. That Modern Warfare 2 boycott.
- 28:32I think this one will do really well. I want
- 28:35to see how it does compared to GTA. Obviously
- 28:37not fair, but... it's literally like the only
- 28:40big game coming out that month so I want to see
- 28:43like what what happens with that like I think
- 28:45in Japan it'll probably do more than GTA obviously
- 28:47because GTA is not physical and it's just on
- 28:50PS5 over there or whatever so but yeah like I
- 28:53I'm gonna I don't know if I'm gonna try and get
- 28:55the console buying another console this soon
- 28:58seems stupid but then I don't even know if we're
- 29:00gonna get an OLED model with with how hardware
- 29:03shit is going so I don't know I don't like the
- 29:06pro controller though like I oh I feel like just
- 29:09buying another one of those is a waste. But yeah,
- 29:11like the Joy -Cons would have been nice to have.
- 29:14They did that for Skyward Sword, didn't they?
- 29:16The blue ones or something. I remember something
- 29:18nice for Skyward Sword. I didn't buy that because
- 29:20when I played the game, it felt like I was playing
- 29:22a Wii game and I do not like that. I think Skyward
- 29:25Sword is the worst mainline Zelda. It's got some
- 29:29really nice design ideas, but I would literally
- 29:31rather play Zelda 2. That's my controversial
- 29:35opinion. That's a nice way to end the Zelda talk.
- 29:41Look, it's got loads of really nice ideas, right?
- 29:44Skyward Sword, like the way you're returning
- 29:46to the dungeons and stuff like that. But I just
- 29:47think the core conceit is so fundamentally uneven
- 29:52in its execution that it messes up the whole
- 29:55experience. I also think that was the game where
- 29:59the lore got away from them a bit and they were
- 30:01a bit... up their own backside about all the
- 30:03lore and then sort of breath of the wild brought
- 30:04them back down to earth um which is a danger
- 30:07it's a danger with the movie coming out with
- 30:09the next game if they take that stuff too seriously
- 30:11anyway as mentioned aside from the direct for
- 30:14zelda we also got a general nintendo direct i'm
- 30:16gonna rattle through this um if you didn't find
- 30:19time to watch it but if anyone has anything specific
- 30:21to say about any of these you can just pipe up
- 30:23uh so we got monster into wild that's coming
- 30:27out december the 4th we all knew that was coming
- 30:29that Gets it out in nice time for then the expansion
- 30:32to be also releasing on the Switch too. And I
- 30:36think it's quite important for Capcom because
- 30:38that game didn't go, didn't perform how they
- 30:40wanted it to in terms of matching worlds. So
- 30:42this is a nice chance for them to get a second
- 30:44chance with a better sort of patched up version
- 30:47of the game, especially with the size of the
- 30:49Switch market. So that's cool. A couple of shadow
- 30:53drops, Crisis Core, Final Fantasy VII. Makes
- 30:55sense now the remake trilogy's on there. It's
- 30:57a good game. if you didn't have a chance to play
- 31:00on other platforms sort of it's at home on the
- 31:03switch because it was built for the psp so it's
- 31:05the mission structure and stuff is built a bit
- 31:06for stop start so it's worth a look but then
- 31:09they did the same they did the same bullshit
- 31:12with no upgrade path no save transfer for people
- 31:14who bought it on switch so that's like the typical
- 31:17square enix thing this is square enix right they
- 31:19they yeah the less said about that the better
- 31:22um Mecha Chameleon on Switch, I think that's
- 31:26already done over 100 ,000 units. Crazy. Initially,
- 31:30it's like £3 .50 as well. Yeah, it's perfect.
- 31:34Kids want to just mess about. It's really good
- 31:36as well. We have a LAN every year, me and the
- 31:40boys, and usually we do it at someone's house,
- 31:42but this year we've actually booked a cottage.
- 31:44I'm sure this will be like a Patreon feature
- 31:46of us, like a video log of us getting the LAN
- 31:49set up and stuff, but we're driving down to a
- 31:50cottage for a whole weekend and having the LAN.
- 31:52But I can't wait to play Mecha Chameleon at the
- 31:54LAN because I think it's just going to be when
- 31:55people have got a few drinks in them. It's going
- 31:58to be a raucously funny with some people spectating
- 32:01inevitably because not everyone tends to play
- 32:03all at once. It should be a right laugh. So that's
- 32:05out. Hyrule Warriors Age of Calamity. Is that
- 32:08Hyrule Warriors 3? Is that the one that's got
- 32:12the ridiculously expensive? It's not 30. Isn't
- 32:15it like 25 quid or something? This is the Switch
- 32:18one that came out. After Breath of the Wild.
- 32:20Oh, okay. It's the one that ran at like fucking
- 32:22five FPS or whatever. Yes, because the other
- 32:24one is Age of Imprisonment. Yes, yes, yes, yes.
- 32:27So is this the first or second one for Switch?
- 32:29Second one. Second. Second one. But the upgrade,
- 32:33there's no like free digital upgrade, is there?
- 32:35You have to pay for like all the other stuff.
- 32:37It's not cheap as well. It seems like it's one
- 32:39of the more expensive ones. And it's a key card
- 32:42physical, which they're charging you more than
- 32:44the digital price. So they literally... It's
- 32:46like 60 digital, 70. And I saw Warrior64 post
- 32:50that he got confirmation from some retailer or
- 32:52some retailers have confirmed on their listing
- 32:54that it's a key card. So you're literally paying
- 32:5610 bucks for the box or whatever there. I did
- 33:00not finish this because it literally was the
- 33:02worst performing game I've probably played in
- 33:04my life. Looked awful as well. So I like 30 quid
- 33:08to like make my 60 quid game work well is something
- 33:11I guess I'm willing to do. I will actually, I
- 33:14will actually, I want to back up Mikael there
- 33:16because I do remember playing it myself. And
- 33:19I just remember the distinctly this one moment
- 33:21where I'm playing as Zelda and I'm using while
- 33:23the special attack, you press the A button, the
- 33:25special attack animation happens. And I just
- 33:28remember suddenly just like chopping into the
- 33:31attack animation and she draws her bow. And I
- 33:33swear to you, held on the single frame for like
- 33:3610 seconds. And I was there like, that's it.
- 33:39My console's crashed. Fucking Zelda game killed
- 33:41the console. And then suddenly the action just
- 33:43came back in. I was like, that game's not good.
- 33:47I actually feel like it's some of the best Warriors
- 33:50combat, but the performance was not good. For
- 33:53me, the first one is still the best one, in my
- 33:54opinion. The Wii U one. It's a very good traditional
- 33:57Warriors game. I like the stuff they introduced
- 34:00in Calamity. So yeah, there's that Procopio Expansion
- 34:05Pass Part 2 that's on the way. It's weird. I
- 34:07feel like that game... It felt like it was going
- 34:09to be the next Animal Crossing, the biggest thing
- 34:11ever. And although it sold really well, it feels
- 34:12like culturally it's just disappeared from the
- 34:15conversation. And the first expansion pass didn't
- 34:17seem to touch the sides on reversing that. So
- 34:20we'll have to see if this makes any difference.
- 34:24Free update to Star Fox. That's coming out at
- 34:26the end of the month. That's new multiplayer
- 34:28maps though, sadly. So nothing to do with the
- 34:30campaign, unfortunately, which is what I would
- 34:33have wanted. But it's cool. They've got split
- 34:35screen back and stuff like that. So it's nice.
- 34:38Star Fox Adventures on Nintendo Switch Online
- 34:40now. I remind you all that there was a rumor
- 34:44when Star Fox was first rumored that there were
- 34:47two Star Fox games, that there was a traditional
- 34:49game and that there was a more adventure style
- 34:52game. And they made a point in the Star Fox reveal
- 34:58on Nintendo Direct to shout out Star Fox Adventures.
- 35:03Now it's on Nintendo Switch Online. Admittedly,
- 35:06they'd probably put it on NSO anyway, but these
- 35:07do feel like the sort of steps you take as Nintendo
- 35:10if you know you've got another game that's of
- 35:13a similar ilk coming down the pike, I would say.
- 35:18This isn't everything, by the way. This is just
- 35:21what I picked out as the top beats. Kingdom Come
- 35:24Deliverance 2 coming to Switch 2 in 2027. I just
- 35:27picked that out because I think it shows we're
- 35:29continuing down this path of all the big games.
- 35:32from the other platforms are coming to Switch
- 35:332, basically. Be curious to see how that runs,
- 35:36though, because it's quite an intense, good -looking
- 35:37game. It's actually something I'm super confident
- 35:41in. I shouldn't be saying that about a Switch
- 35:432 port, but it ran like... I think it's one of
- 35:46the best -looking games I've played on Steam
- 35:47Deck, and it had, like, zero issues except for,
- 35:50like, the one town. And that was at launch. So,
- 35:52like, now it's probably going to be way better.
- 35:54I think when I played it on base PS5, it looked
- 35:57like something you'd expect from a PS6 game.
- 36:00from one of those from Europe or whatever. I
- 36:03feel like a lot of people look down on WRPG visuals
- 36:06because they're all for the story, but Man Kingdom
- 36:09Come was amazing. I think it looks fantastic.
- 36:12I'm definitely going to be playing that when
- 36:14it comes out. The one thing I hope they add for
- 36:16that is, I think Deep Silver is still handling
- 36:20it. They have this backend thing called PROS,
- 36:23which is like their account system. They let
- 36:25you do cross -save in some games only. So it
- 36:28worked in Space Marine too. It's like a one -way
- 36:31sync and then you have a cooldown. If they do
- 36:33that in Kingdom Come 2, I'm moving my PS5 save
- 36:35to Switch 2. If they don't, I'll just grind my
- 36:38teeth and play through it again. But I would
- 36:40like cross -save if they can do that. Yeah, it's
- 36:44one of those games where the hyper, you speak
- 36:47to the Western RPG style, like they go for it
- 36:50on the hyper real thing. And I know it's like,
- 36:53that's one of the games where when people have
- 36:55been hacking DLSS 5 into it, you look at it and
- 36:58go, yeah, okay. makes sense i mean you remember
- 37:01our podcast our podcast discussion right for
- 37:04the rpg site rpg of the year like it was literally
- 37:06neck and neck between this and expedition 33
- 37:09like i mean before i even joined the site i've
- 37:12heard all of the rpg of the year but i know i
- 37:15don't think anything was this close so yeah yeah
- 37:19it was a fight i remember um pikmin 4 switch
- 37:22to edition It's one of those ones where it's
- 37:25Pikmin 4 plus something else. So the plus is
- 37:27Dandori Academy. So I'm not a Pikmin. So Brynjil
- 37:30making a fist, like in a yes sense. I'm not a
- 37:36Pikmin guy, but I felt like I saw a bit of disappointment
- 37:38about what the expansion bit was. Can you speak
- 37:41to that? Okay. So obviously nothing confirmed
- 37:45until we go hands on ourselves, but it looks...
- 37:49It looks like some quite simple challenge mode
- 37:53stuff and perhaps even some stuff which might
- 37:56be a bit too simple. You know, I feel like Pikmin
- 38:014 in general, there were some end game challenges
- 38:03that ramped it up a bit, but in general, it was
- 38:06a pretty easy game compared to the rest of the
- 38:08series. And I think some people are annoyed about
- 38:11that. But honestly, I really, really like Pikmin
- 38:14and I'm happy to just play through that whole
- 38:16thing again, you know? I've also, of course,
- 38:20Pikmin 3. Pikmin 3 got the Switch 2 free update
- 38:23recently, and I'm excited to play through that
- 38:25one again as well once games stop releasing,
- 38:28please. I need time. I've just never got Pikmin.
- 38:32Really? It's one of Miyamoto's favorite children,
- 38:37right? So Pikmin get quite a disproportionate
- 38:39amount of representation for how well the games
- 38:41sell. Yeah, considering how many games there
- 38:44were for the longest time. It's quite frustrating.
- 38:47We had two games for ages and we kept seeing
- 38:49Pikmin in Nintendo Directs or in Nintendo trailers
- 38:52or whatever. It's like, we've had two games for
- 38:54the last two decades. Will you hurry up? It's
- 38:56frustrating to go to the Nintendo store in Japan
- 38:58and like 20 % of the store is Pikmin. And I'm
- 39:02there, just give me a crumb of Star Fox or Metroid
- 39:05or something. Hopefully when I go, there'll be
- 39:09some Star Fox merch there this year, considering
- 39:10we just had a new game. I know there's the plush
- 39:12toys, but... you can get those in the uk so i
- 39:15digress uh another switch to edition xenoblade
- 39:173 that's going to be out december the 3rd they
- 39:20haven't really said much about or have they mccann
- 39:23about what extra will be in that they've all
- 39:25had a little bit yeah oh they've got vampire
- 39:29survivors in it yeah yeah there's like a 3d top
- 39:32down type vampire survivor style survival thing
- 39:35and there's a new hero they showed I think the
- 39:38interesting thing about Xenoblade 3 is this was
- 39:41the first one where they actually pushed their
- 39:43engine to like actually add upscaling already.
- 39:46Like I believe it was already there on the Switch
- 39:48version. So that's why it looked nice. So there's
- 39:50a chance this one will just launch without any
- 39:53issues because every Xenoblade release so far
- 39:56has been like people texting me saying it's out.
- 39:58Is it good? Is it shit? And I'm like, give me
- 40:00a few hours and it's good, but it has some issues.
- 40:02So this one might be good because it was already
- 40:05the most polished of the lot. it's not my favorite
- 40:082 is still my favorite but yeah I want to try
- 40:11this out don't give me that face you like Pikmin
- 40:14you like 2 I feel like the good Xenoblade games
- 40:21is 1 X and the DLC of 3 the DLC of 3 is like
- 40:27the DLC of 3 is like Perfect. I agree with you
- 40:30on that. X is good as well. They didn't fix that
- 40:33though. Like they released that and they didn't
- 40:34fix it. They released two. People said they're
- 40:36not going to fix it, but they fixed it. So go
- 40:39back and fix X, man. I think the next one is
- 40:43going to be really good. And I think the timing
- 40:45of the release on this, I think you can read
- 40:47from that. You release that and you want to give
- 40:49people maybe three to four months to finish it
- 40:52and then you have the new one out. So I take
- 40:55that as March, April for the next one. Yeah,
- 40:57I'm excited for Genesis as well. So last couple
- 41:01of bit, well, last small bit, there's a Mario
- 41:03Kart World update, which I was just excited because
- 41:05it just gave you some traditional ass courses
- 41:07that aren't, I mean, they are in the open world.
- 41:10They're in there, but yeah. But they were just
- 41:12there, like you could drive around them. So the
- 41:15fact they've now gone, and I hope they do more
- 41:17of that. I don't know how you, how do you access
- 41:19them? Because I played a multiplayer game the
- 41:21other day in Grand Prix and there's nothing there.
- 41:23Where do you get, how do you get, is it like
- 41:25in different mode or something? I think it's
- 41:27just available in versus mode. So when you're
- 41:30selecting your choice of tracks, those tracks
- 41:33have just been added. I haven't tried it, but
- 41:36I don't have the Mario Kart SNES nostalgia. So
- 41:39when I saw it, I was like, oh great, it's the
- 41:41Super Nintendo tracks. But for me, N64 was where
- 41:43I really... It's got to be N64. N64 is the one.
- 41:46I would pay money for N64 tracks. Cuba Trooper
- 41:51Beach. Get it in there. It's not been represented
- 41:54that in any of the games, has it, since the original?
- 41:57I'm not sure it's been any of them. I don't know.
- 41:59The DS one had a hell of a lot of the tracks
- 42:04in, and Mario Kart 8 by the end. I lost my DS
- 42:08kart, so I didn't play it enough. It was in Mario
- 42:12Kart. I know, it was Cooper Beach 2. First game
- 42:17you lost. Yeah, I just couldn't find it again.
- 42:20The cartridge just went. That was it. I have
- 42:23vague memories of NES games that I think I must
- 42:26have played twice and must have lost or something.
- 42:30Still thinking about it. I lost a Game Boy copy
- 42:33of Super Mario Land 2, Six Golden Coins, and
- 42:35I still think about it sometimes. That's a banger
- 42:38as well. I've got a copy now. In my growing life,
- 42:42I healed that wound in my heart with the power
- 42:44of eBay. But I still remember being in the car.
- 42:48I'm going into my Game Boy case. I'd like that
- 42:50black Game Boy case with the Nintendo logo on.
- 42:53I think everybody had in the nineties. Yeah.
- 42:55I'm going, where is, that was a really nice case.
- 42:57Really soft. Um, and going like, oh my God, where's
- 43:00my Mario? And it was gone. Great game. My ex
- 43:04-girlfriend lost my, uh, Pokey Walker. The heart
- 43:07gone soul silver, which, uh, just became, it
- 43:10happened to become one of like the most valuable
- 43:12pieces of Pokemon merchandise ever. And she lost
- 43:16it day one. I get the game the next day. Oh,
- 43:19can I walk around with that? That's cute. I'm
- 43:21like, I guess. Day... It's gone. It's gone. Holy
- 43:26crap. Yeah, they're like 130 quid. She's the
- 43:29poker walker. Without the fucking game, they're
- 43:31130 quid. If you give it with the game, it's
- 43:34like fucking 200. That's the... It's like the
- 43:36Tamagotchi. Oh, right. It was like a little Tamagotchi.
- 43:39Do I have one of those? I must have one of those.
- 43:41Hold on. Hold on. Oh. Don't tell me you bought
- 43:46another one. Do you know how much it hurts to
- 43:48have this box and nothing in it? Nothing in it.
- 43:50I mean, you could just repurpose this for GTA
- 43:546 in a few months. No. Yes. Lastly, because we
- 43:59are going really long on this since there's no
- 44:00direct discussion, two new games, Metroid Ravenous,
- 44:032D Metroid, Metroid 6 technically, I guess. Looks
- 44:08really good. Looks really action -y. Looks like
- 44:10a continuation of the work. that was done on
- 44:13the Metroid 2 remake and Metroid... Dread. Dread,
- 44:19that's it. I really like 2D Metroid. I'm here
- 44:23for it. That's about all I've got to say. Hell
- 44:26yeah. I like that it has music again. Dread had
- 44:29no music. That's what he said. And, oh yeah,
- 44:32one more thing, which I think I didn't see a
- 44:34lot of people pick up on. On the store page,
- 44:36it says it has HDR, which is nice. It also says
- 44:39it has 120Hz support. Interested to see what
- 44:42that comes out. We got VRR now. It's okay. In
- 44:48one game. But it will happen for games in the
- 44:52future, I assume. I assume games that come out
- 44:54from now on will come to VRR support. Capcom
- 44:56has to have that in Dragon's Dogma, Nessie, and
- 45:00Monster Hunter because those are going to be
- 45:02dog shit otherwise docked. Have you tried Onimusha
- 45:05on Switch 2? Have you tried it on Switch 2? I
- 45:07haven't, no. So... This was the first Capcom
- 45:11game where they let you cap the frame rate and
- 45:12you have to do that dock because otherwise it
- 45:14just does not feel good dock. So I'm interested
- 45:17to see what they do here. But yeah, like Ravenous
- 45:19looks good. Got a friend to order the limited
- 45:21edition for me. Happy about that. Me looking
- 45:25on the shelves behind me to see if I had a Pokewalker.
- 45:30Yeah, I'm really excited for that. And there's
- 45:32a new Kirby game, which is like Kirby goes to
- 45:35the Truman Show and discovers that he's actually
- 45:37in a fake world. That looks good. Yeah, 3D open
- 45:41world. Yeah, I quite like Kirby. I didn't play
- 45:45it at all until possibly the Switch. I played
- 45:49a few games there and I like them all. Hell yeah.
- 45:52That was the game that my small child was most
- 45:56excited for in the direct. So I think I'll be
- 45:59playing that because of her. She's like, is Kirby
- 46:04a Pokemon? I was like, nope. Close enough. When
- 46:09Smash Melee came out, Jigglypuff and Kirby right
- 46:12next to each other, you wouldn't know. Yeah,
- 46:14that's true. And obviously, just to talk more
- 46:17generally, the run -up to this Direct was silly.
- 46:19People were expecting Smash and Nintendogs. I
- 46:23could see a new Nintendogs. That makes sense
- 46:25in my brain. I think it's probably too soon for
- 46:27a new Smash because Kirby Air Riders has only
- 46:29just come out. But you have to laugh at the mess
- 46:34that went on in the run -up to that. I feel like
- 46:37we could have a whole ass discussion about just
- 46:39Smash and what could happen next. Yeah, you can
- 46:43do that when I'm not here. I will say for now,
- 46:46I don't feel like the next Smash will necessarily
- 46:51be like 100 % Sakurai -led because it does feel
- 46:54like Smash Ultimate was kind of like the end
- 46:57point of that style of game. You know? We'll
- 47:01see. Yes. I don't know what I would want there.
- 47:05I think you can only go one of two paths, really,
- 47:07which is you've either got to literally continue
- 47:11where Ultimate left off and just basically zhuzh
- 47:15up the graphics and keep adding characters and
- 47:17stages, or you reset and you do a game with 12,
- 47:2316 characters and it's a completely different
- 47:25sort of game. I'll be very, in Sakurai Retrust,
- 47:29so I'll be very interested to see. But that's
- 47:33it for Nintendo. There is more on the site. There's
- 47:35a great roundup from Tom and Michaela of everything
- 47:39that was in the Direct. So there's some stuff
- 47:41that we didn't talk about, smaller games, things
- 47:44like that, that you might want to look at. It's
- 47:45also got every single trailer. So if you want
- 47:47to just skim through and watch the trailers you're
- 47:49interested in without having to watch the whole
- 47:51Direct, if you missed it, you can do that on
- 47:53respec .net. Next story, and really our last
- 47:58story of the week, and then we'll do some other
- 48:00bits. This crazy shit that I woke up and I was
- 48:04like, what the hell has happened overnight? Which
- 48:08is basically Kojima Productions obviously have
- 48:10made two games with Sony, with PlayStation, Death
- 48:13Stranding, Death Stranding 2. And they had a
- 48:15deal for another, which was a game called Fizzint.
- 48:17And Fizzint was basically Kojima's new Metal
- 48:21Gear Solid. It was a stealth espionage action
- 48:24game. There was apparently going to be a film
- 48:27component as well. Am I right in thinking that
- 48:29Jordan Peele was also going to be involved in
- 48:32that? I remember seeing him at some England.
- 48:34Was he there when they announced it? Or was it
- 48:36that big beardy bloke who did the Godzilla? Peele's
- 48:40involved in OD. I can't remember. But there was
- 48:44definitely a Hollywood person where it was like,
- 48:46oh, and we're going to do a Hollywood element.
- 48:48And it was like the whole thing of PlayStation
- 48:49game, Sony Pictures, Columbia Pictures, which
- 48:53is owned by Sony, movie. um and then i'm gonna
- 48:56just quote um kojima himself so he said on twitter
- 49:00x uh quote in mid -june this year we unexpectedly
- 49:05received notice from playstation studios that
- 49:08they would cancel the fizzing project fizzing
- 49:11is an important project both to me personally
- 49:13and to kojima productions determined to keep
- 49:16the project alive we have spent the last three
- 49:18months searching tirelessly for a new partner
- 49:20In the course of seeking advice and pursuing
- 49:22negotiations with people across many fields,
- 49:24we found in Xbox, a partner with whom we share
- 49:27a common vision for the future, and we've decided
- 49:30to team up with them once again. Please rest
- 49:32assured that the development of Fizzint as genre
- 49:34defining action espionage title is ongoing and
- 49:38will continue moving forward. So that is sort
- 49:44of crazy. Sony's dropped the game. Microsoft
- 49:47has swept in and has taken it. It's a highly
- 49:49anticipated game. Thoughts? Man. Sony don't want
- 49:57to make games no more. I will say, Kojima said
- 50:02specifically that he got word from Sony that
- 50:04they didn't want to do the game anymore in June.
- 50:07Which, if we rewind time a couple of months,
- 50:09it was like... It's before the physical announcements.
- 50:12It's before the live TV announcement. It feels
- 50:16like behind the scenes. There's a lot of restructuring
- 50:19going on post the live service disasters. Plural,
- 50:24you know. Sony needs to make money because they
- 50:28threw a billion dollars away trying to make a
- 50:30whole bunch of live service games that they cancelled.
- 50:32And they don't know what to do. They're clawing
- 50:36at shit right now. And it's pretty embarrassing.
- 50:39I think they looked at it and they said, if this
- 50:41game only makes as much as something like Death
- 50:44Stranding 2, that's not enough profit. But guess
- 50:47what? There aren't any games that are going to
- 50:49give Sony enough profit. They threw that money
- 50:52down the drain and they just got to take the
- 50:54loss and move on with shit that actually works,
- 50:57you know? Alas, we're just going to cancel games
- 51:01and hope things work themselves out. Could have
- 51:05got Bluepoint to remake a good game. There's
- 51:07a lot of games in the Sony library. They've made
- 51:10mistake after mistake. It's insane. That's what
- 51:12I said. Like this was like the worst thing they've
- 51:15done since the Bluepoint announcement. Like I
- 51:17was so annoyed with that. And it's like, you
- 51:19know, with people clown on Nintendo for doing
- 51:21remakes and remasters, like Sony owned the best
- 51:24studio that does that and did nothing with them.
- 51:27Like they did one launch title for the PS5, which
- 51:29I love. That's it. They didn't, they could have
- 51:32literally like licensed and done, they could
- 51:34have gotten Bluepoint to do multiplayer Dark
- 51:36Souls 2 and 3 remasters also. Like at that point,
- 51:39they weren't even against doing PC stuff. So
- 51:41like they just wasted Bluepoint. And the Kojima
- 51:44thing is like, a friend of mine told me it's
- 51:47because you finally played MGS4 and bought RRR
- 51:49on Blu -ray. This happened, it's your fault and
- 51:51whatever. I laughed at that. But so the first
- 51:55thing I thought of with this is that OD project.
- 51:57We've not seen shit from it. It's probably years
- 51:59away as well. But whatever they're doing, they've
- 52:03got enthusiast mindshare and good press for doing
- 52:06this. And I feel like that's why they've done
- 52:08it. Xbox, I mean. Yeah, absolutely. And on Sony's
- 52:12side, it just looks like every single thing they
- 52:14do is just another bad decision that gets worse.
- 52:16It just spits into Sony's face. It's just a spit
- 52:19in Sony's face. But also I think if you think
- 52:21about Xbox, where Xbox is at right now, you've
- 52:24got someone like Asher who's coming in and getting
- 52:26to know what video games are and getting to know
- 52:28the video games industry. This guy is a Spielberg
- 52:33or a Tarantino of video games or an Abrams of
- 52:37video games. It's a very easy pitch to understand.
- 52:41And so I think probably when that was put across
- 52:43a desk, that had enormous... enormous clout as
- 52:47for what sony's doing i just think the do kojima
- 52:51games make money absolutely but death standing
- 52:532 definitely underperformed even if it made its
- 52:55money back and sony probably does look at it
- 53:00and go well we can fund this with this much profit
- 53:03margin or we can give more money to gorilla to
- 53:07make two more horizon games or to insomniac to
- 53:11make more like really simple brain like slightly
- 53:15brain dead market penetration superhero games
- 53:18and get a far better return on investment which
- 53:23brings us to tom you've played a little bit of
- 53:26wolverine yeah a little bit i've like 20 minutes
- 53:31i would say and so that i played it after the
- 53:35reviews so reviews dropped like it's got it's
- 53:40actually review wise it's doing okay but when
- 53:42you look at like certain reviews they're quite
- 53:45damning some of them don't even read like the
- 53:49sixes they got um and i've seen some people talk
- 53:52about like god of war in comparison i've heard
- 53:56i played 20 minutes so it's early and it's still
- 53:58a bit tutorialy i guess um to do anything like
- 54:01god of war doesn't feel like god war in any way
- 54:03god of war is a great game the new one The second
- 54:08one is also a great game that I think for some
- 54:12reason has got caught up in this first party
- 54:14games from PlayStation are all the same. They're
- 54:16great games. Both of those I will do not like
- 54:20being, I don't like it when people say they're
- 54:22just like trash Sony single player games. They're
- 54:24not. They're really well made, good games. Second
- 54:26one in particular has got some really great story
- 54:29bits as well. This feels really weird. Like it's,
- 54:36i know everyone's like like they'll be like i
- 54:40want to play like an old 360 style action game
- 54:43whatever i don't know if we always do want to
- 54:47do that and this feels feels a bit like what's
- 54:53the right word for this like it doesn't feel
- 54:55prestige in the way that you expect it to but
- 54:59it doesn't it's not that it doesn't it doesn't
- 55:00look bad it just feels like basic or something
- 55:04about it just doesn't quite feel like i expected
- 55:07it to feel and i'm not a massive fan of the spider
- 55:10-man games but they're fine i do love ratchet
- 55:12and clank i think the last one is brilliant game
- 55:14um but this is like i mean it's early on right
- 55:18so i'm sure it will develop or whatever it doesn't
- 55:21feel like the very first proper mission i guess
- 55:25once you've gone through a bit tutorial stuff
- 55:27is like you're going around this like army town
- 55:30or or something i'm not entirely sure what it
- 55:32is um and you have to disable these like alarms
- 55:35or something and it's just like you going around
- 55:38these like four or five different locations fighting
- 55:41the enemies in there and then you have to press
- 55:43triangle to disable the alarm and it's like is
- 55:47this really good game design i don't know if
- 55:51it is um and i yeah i'm interested to see where
- 55:56it goes because I generally, apart from like,
- 55:58I'm not a big fan of Horizon as a series, but
- 56:02other than that, I quite like Sony's first party
- 56:04stuff. I think it's the cool thing to be like,
- 56:07oh, Sony have like, everything's the same. They
- 56:09make generic first party single player games.
- 56:13What I like most of them, to be honest, I think
- 56:15they've done a good job at building some of those
- 56:16up. This does feel early on at least disappointing,
- 56:21I would say. i don't know we'll see where it
- 56:25goes like i think it has to rely a bit more on
- 56:28like being just a fun thing to play through and
- 56:31at the moment it doesn't feel like it has enough
- 56:33of that like fun excitement around it to to carry
- 56:38to carry what feels like quite a simple game
- 56:40but like it's 20 minutes like there's a lot more
- 56:43to go i think some of the videos i saw of like
- 56:45the over tutorialization over hand holding stuff
- 56:48is scary though it actually like this again actually
- 56:51looks like those memes which is nuts. And you
- 56:57have to wonder if it seems like this is one of
- 56:59the first big games where that stuff has actually
- 57:02been a major trip hazard for the studio and for
- 57:06the game's reception. And maybe that is going
- 57:09to give people some pause for thought on that
- 57:11topic at long last. Yeah, but you wonder in that
- 57:18sense. It's like this is the most mass market
- 57:20game ever, in a sense. that you can put out in
- 57:24terms of the way it's been designed and the way
- 57:25everything about it it's super super uber mass
- 57:28market and they just cut this game that is probably
- 57:31the opposite of that quite cult will still make
- 57:34its money back but you know and you've got to
- 57:36wonder if seeing the reception for this someone
- 57:38at sony's like man should we have done that should
- 57:41we have kept this kojima game um to tie i think
- 57:45going back going back to the kojima thing i think
- 57:47xbox is this is exactly what they should be doing
- 57:49if they want to build up any kind of presence
- 57:53again they need to get games like this so people
- 57:56have a reason to consider it as a platform like
- 57:59if you go back to like the playstation look at
- 58:02playstation some of the games that stand out
- 58:05you've got like metal gear solid right you've
- 58:08got uh crash bandicoot spyro those are all xbox
- 58:12games now as like uh you look back and think
- 58:15about how that's changed i think playstation
- 58:17i write about this a bit after the last i think
- 58:21the the summer showcases and stuff is that they're
- 58:25like they need to correct what they've done with
- 58:27all the live service stuff but also they need
- 58:29to figure out how to get back some of that excitement
- 58:31in what they were making like even if you go
- 58:33back to like not that long ago ps4 had a good
- 58:36chunk of games that were original interesting
- 58:39projects that weren't just his other horizon
- 58:42game it's another whatever um like the first
- 58:44horizon game yeah um but then they even like
- 58:48they've re like sony have remade They remade
- 58:52Horizon. They also remade, like, The Last of
- 58:54Us, right? I mean, I liked the remake of The
- 58:56Last of Us. Don't get me wrong, but it's, like,
- 58:58some of those studios have just, like, what have
- 59:01they been up to? Probably getting cancelled live
- 59:03service games. But, yeah, like, I think Xbox,
- 59:07this is, like, if there's anything, like, it's
- 59:10rare. The game, like, from Kojima, there aren't
- 59:13many, if there is anything like another Kojima,
- 59:15I don't know if there is anyone at his level
- 59:17in terms of, like... people expect just from
- 59:20the name something that they're going to love
- 59:22whatever but um it's exactly the right thing
- 59:24for them to be doing i know it probably costs
- 59:26a lot of money and it's complicated with everything
- 59:28else going on with xbox but it is exactly the
- 59:31kind of thing that they should be going for in
- 59:33my opinion well we talked about it in our discord
- 59:36server which you should you should join uh but
- 59:39um someone asked about how are they able to do
- 59:43this when they're cutting loads of studios cutting
- 59:45loads of people and there's this whole We've
- 59:48encountered it when we worked at IGN and stuff.
- 59:50There's this whole idea of employees and ongoing
- 59:55concerns are far more concerning than people
- 1:00:00who are just sort of, than a contractor where
- 1:00:03you give them a bag of money because you don't
- 1:00:04have to worry about the dental benefits and the
- 1:00:07health insurance and stuff of the Kojima Productions
- 1:00:09employees. And also, once the contract's over,
- 1:00:12it's over. You haven't got to try and find a
- 1:00:13way to cut people. And so there is a big difference.
- 1:00:16In terms of how a company like Microsoft accounts
- 1:00:18it, it doesn't make all the cuts they've done
- 1:00:20okay. But the reason that this has happened despite
- 1:00:23the cuts is because it's a different kettle of
- 1:00:25fish entirely, basically. I don't know. You are
- 1:00:31right, Tom. It's exactly what Xbox needs to be
- 1:00:33doing. The thing that's worrying about it is
- 1:00:36you look at Sony and you think about the last
- 1:00:38two generations and you think about... what sony
- 1:00:42incubated over the last few generations so new
- 1:00:44ips like uncharted like last of us like uh like
- 1:00:49ghost um and all that sort of stuff infamous
- 1:00:54back in the day you look at this generation sony
- 1:00:58destruction all -stars um which they closed and
- 1:01:03concord which they closed And this is a problem
- 1:01:07that everyone's got. Like, how much new IP has
- 1:01:09Microsoft actually truly stood up that's going
- 1:01:11to stand the test of time as well? Not very much.
- 1:01:13Even Nintendo, their last big new franchise was
- 1:01:17Splatoon, you know, a generation ago now. ARMS
- 1:01:20is better than Splatoon. Yeah, ARMS, I suppose.
- 1:01:22It is better than Splatoon, but will ARMS ever
- 1:01:25get a sequel? Legs? Who knows? I mean, they did
- 1:01:29make Bayonetta, so... Yeah, yeah. But that's
- 1:01:34something I worry about in general is a lack
- 1:01:36of new big IP. And it's all well and good stuff
- 1:01:40cutting through from indie, which is wonderful.
- 1:01:43But I do think also you need big studios to take
- 1:01:46a swing. And Sony doing this is yet another vote
- 1:01:52of no confidence in, hey, we're going to fund
- 1:01:54a big budget new IP. But at least Microsoft's
- 1:01:58willing to take that swing. They wouldn't have
- 1:02:02done it for anyone except Kojima, I don't think.
- 1:02:04But there you go. Excuse me while I drink before
- 1:02:11we go on to the next thing. I want to just throw
- 1:02:19a couple coals onto the fire since we're talking
- 1:02:22about PlayStation and Xbox. Man, I've always
- 1:02:28been a console boy. always i prefer playing on
- 1:02:31consoles to pc every time i play on pc there's
- 1:02:34like a minor issue that i have to fix before
- 1:02:36i can play the game and i can't stand it but
- 1:02:39play a console i put the game in and i turn it
- 1:02:42on it just works and i've always preferred that
- 1:02:44sure there's updates and shit like that these
- 1:02:46days but in general playing a game on a ps5 especially
- 1:02:49pre -launch tends to be easier than pc um With
- 1:02:54everything that's happened, including the physical
- 1:02:57game discs, studio closures, cancelling a Kojima
- 1:03:01game, shifting over to Xbox, all of that. All
- 1:03:04of it's making me feel like in the future, I'm
- 1:03:06going to focus on Nintendo Switch 2 and PC. Right
- 1:03:09now, I use my PS5 Pro for like almost everything.
- 1:03:13Most of the games I play for work, I play on
- 1:03:15PS5. Most of the games I play for pleasure. play
- 1:03:17on ps5 and even when i'm just like watching youtube
- 1:03:19or netflix i'll play it on the ps5 so i don't
- 1:03:22have to connect my tv to the internet and get
- 1:03:23gen gen ai music channels in the in between it
- 1:03:27yeah i i've always been the console guy and now
- 1:03:33i'm genuinely thinking i might just have to go
- 1:03:35pc and switch to because that will come that
- 1:03:38will cover almost every game i'll ever want to
- 1:03:40play i'll probably get better experiences i just
- 1:03:44feel like i'm done with with with both playstation
- 1:03:47and xbox even if fizzint comes out and is a banger
- 1:03:50it's probably gonna come out on pc now so i'm
- 1:03:51sure it will come out on pc yeah it will i think
- 1:03:54from my point of view i'm also with you i prefer
- 1:03:56playing on i think the only the maximum pc gaming
- 1:03:59i've done in my life is steam deck if you count
- 1:04:01that and you kind of have to but like my perspective
- 1:04:04has always been like as someone who plays and
- 1:04:07tests games on multiple platforms i'm just gonna
- 1:04:09play the game where i get the most comfortable
- 1:04:12experience. Like if a game runs good enough on
- 1:04:14Switch 2 and it's like 120 FPS on PS5, if I'm
- 1:04:18happy with how it is on Switch 2, I'm going to
- 1:04:20play it on Switch 2. Even though like, you know,
- 1:04:22like I don't have a high end PC. I'm probably
- 1:04:24going to get a Steam machine soon, which is not
- 1:04:26high end. That's like PS5 level. But for say
- 1:04:29something like Control Resonant, I don't know
- 1:04:31if I'm going to play it on PS5. Maybe I'll just
- 1:04:33play it over there if it's good enough. And I
- 1:04:35feel like that's a problem which people aren't
- 1:04:37realizing is happening to Sony. that for people
- 1:04:40who owned a Switch and a shitload of people owned
- 1:04:43a Switch, they couldn't play most of the third
- 1:04:45-party games. You have to buy a PS5, you have
- 1:04:47to buy a PC. Now those games are coming to Switch
- 1:04:50too. If they are okay with the performance cutbacks
- 1:04:53and general visual cuts, you don't need another
- 1:04:55platform. No one has enough time to play every
- 1:04:58single game. You want to play Capcom games, you're
- 1:05:00getting them day one now. You want to play Square
- 1:05:02Enix games, you're getting Final Fantasy day
- 1:05:04one. Yeah, so I think that's something which...
- 1:05:08For people who just want to play on one platform,
- 1:05:11you're mostly covered now, even for the big games.
- 1:05:15Well, so this is the interesting thing, really,
- 1:05:17is that I think for the last few generations,
- 1:05:23Microsoft and Sony have both regarded Nintendo
- 1:05:25as a non -competitor. They're in a different
- 1:05:28market. They're doing their own thing. But the
- 1:05:30irony is now Nintendo is competing on the third
- 1:05:32-party game front. And so I think that's where
- 1:05:35they... could be more of a threat than people
- 1:05:38realize. They're also getting sports games now
- 1:05:43at almost feature parity, which is something
- 1:05:45which is going to affect them in the US market
- 1:05:47as well. But I feel like the only thing they
- 1:05:50don't have right now, which maybe Nintendo is
- 1:05:52going to be working on this gen, is they don't
- 1:05:54have gacha games, which Sony makes a shitload
- 1:05:56of money from by default. They just get rent
- 1:06:00for doing nothing and hosting the game. They
- 1:06:02probably earn more from Genshin than they did
- 1:06:04from Japan Studio at this point with how much
- 1:06:06that makes on PlayStation. I'm sure that's true.
- 1:06:09Yeah. So I feel like they have that not there
- 1:06:12on Switch, but then do they want it on the platform?
- 1:06:15Because then they'll have people playing the
- 1:06:16forever games and not spending on the other games.
- 1:06:19That's another issue. which nintendo doesn't
- 1:06:22have to worry about right now and the other thing
- 1:06:24is they don't really have many of the big you
- 1:06:26know the action games coming from china and korea
- 1:06:29they just started with lies of p and stellar
- 1:06:31blade if those do well i think sony will miss
- 1:06:33out on that also going forward because the people
- 1:06:36who have a switch to they'll be okay with it
- 1:06:38like i've played so many games on steam deck
- 1:06:40because i wanted to play them portably And I
- 1:06:42didn't play them on like, you know, PS5 or Xbox.
- 1:06:44There are a lot of people like that. So they
- 1:06:47probably need to worry about that more. But then
- 1:06:49maybe in their head right now, they're like,
- 1:06:51we're making enough money. That's good enough
- 1:06:54for us. And that's probably going to, the bleed
- 1:06:56is eventually going to get to them on that front.
- 1:07:00Yeah, it's interesting times. It's funny how
- 1:07:05like, we didn't mention it, but the start of
- 1:07:07the Zelda Direct. was the the concert bit right
- 1:07:10and they did the the music and like i'm not the
- 1:07:14world's biggest zelda fan but like i played quite
- 1:07:16a lot of zelda games but that during that montage
- 1:07:19probably the happiest i felt about games in about
- 1:07:2110 years i think like it just felt like this
- 1:07:25is like this is what games are kind of stuff
- 1:07:28that should be i felt actually and it's rare
- 1:07:30i felt happy about the whole thing for about
- 1:07:33five minutes how that went on possibly a slight
- 1:07:35little tear in my eye even like it felt like
- 1:07:38this is like what this is what games should be
- 1:07:41and i don't think the others have that like sony
- 1:07:45have got a history and like of a degree but nintendo
- 1:07:48has that like like like you just expect good
- 1:07:54from them i know they're a company and they are
- 1:07:57all they're obviously about making money i don't
- 1:07:59believe the whole thing about nintendo like your
- 1:08:01best friend whoever this is a corporation but
- 1:08:04they are consistently doing the right thing when
- 1:08:08it comes to making games i think whereas the
- 1:08:10others i think that is questionable i would like
- 1:08:14to say go ahead you go first Okay, I'll do it
- 1:08:17quickly. I saw some people bring up the Wolverine
- 1:08:20reviews and said, oh, it's Sony's Metroid Prime
- 1:08:224 moment or whatever. And I think what people
- 1:08:26don't realize is Nintendo can afford those things
- 1:08:28because they put out something every single month
- 1:08:30that is only available on their platform. Even
- 1:08:32if it's like Pikmin 4, my hype went to zero when
- 1:08:35I found out it's still 30 FPS. I'm not replaying
- 1:08:38it at 30. So, but then it doesn't matter. They
- 1:08:40have so much stuff coming out. They have a potentially
- 1:08:43like based on previews, like what multiple hundred
- 1:08:45are. Fire Emblem game coming out next week so
- 1:08:48that's what does Sony have a multiple R Wolverine
- 1:08:53game coming up yeah and what I was going to say
- 1:08:57is obviously it was the 40th anniversary for
- 1:08:59Zelda that concert celebrated like 40 years of
- 1:09:02the series went for all the different games even
- 1:09:04Triforce Heroes Jesus Christ like it's interesting
- 1:09:08they consider that a mainline Zelda game that
- 1:09:10little logo flash I was like huh someone's gotta
- 1:09:14Even that, and I've just got to say, look around
- 1:09:18the industry and which other series has persevered
- 1:09:21regular releases, high quality, for that amount
- 1:09:24of time? Pac -Man. I mean, some people don't
- 1:09:30like the Pac -Ventures. Some people don't. I'm
- 1:09:33not saying they're right or wrong. I'm just saying
- 1:09:35some people don't like the Pac -Ventures. But,
- 1:09:39you know, if we ignore Nintendo franchises. i
- 1:09:44don't know man i don't know i don't know well
- 1:09:47that's a very old person conversation so that
- 1:09:51leads us nicely into finishing up with a bit
- 1:09:54of retro respective of stuff that's happened
- 1:09:56on this week in the past not that one um so um
- 1:10:01this week uh lufia the legend returns that was
- 1:10:05the game boy one the third one that's a series
- 1:10:07i wish would would make a proper proper big comeback
- 1:10:09good like that age when you had a bunch of good
- 1:10:13uh jrpgs that weren't final fantasy or dragon
- 1:10:17quest or whatever i mean there are still some
- 1:10:19obviously but are there any games that are 25
- 1:10:21years old today alex uh not today there is but
- 1:10:27nothing of interest i did i did look that up
- 1:10:29because i was gonna say what a terrible release
- 1:10:31day it reminds me of that tragedy but unfortunately
- 1:10:34there weren't any um colin mccray dirt 2 which
- 1:10:38i just point out that's 15 years old Not only
- 1:10:42is that a good game, but it's the last to carry
- 1:10:43his name. Which, fair play, they did keep putting
- 1:10:47his name on those games for a good six or seven
- 1:10:52years after he died in that horrible helicopter
- 1:10:54crash. But good game. Ten years since Phoenix
- 1:10:58Wright, Ace Attorney, Spirit of Justice came
- 1:11:00out. So Capcom, the time, you know. We're ringing
- 1:11:06a bell here. Come on, for God's sake. Maybe Tokyo
- 1:11:09Game Show will be the one. We'll have to see.
- 1:11:10I don't think so, though. Big one, Crash Bandicoot
- 1:11:14is 30 this week. So that's a... Is he not going
- 1:11:18to get a concert? Yeah. They've got one iconic
- 1:11:23theme. I feel like Spyro had the better music,
- 1:11:26right? That main Crash theme is good. It would
- 1:11:33be the shortest concert in history. Brains is
- 1:11:36leaking his next song on the podcast. So that's
- 1:11:4330 years old. I got to enjoy, that's one of the
- 1:11:46few games my wife cares about and likes. And
- 1:11:50so me and my daughter were playing Switch today
- 1:11:52and we were playing Mario, whatever the 2D Mario
- 1:11:58is called. I forget now. My mind's gone. wonder
- 1:12:01with the wonder that's it we're playing wonder
- 1:12:03and then my wife's like can you get crash on
- 1:12:06this and as it happened we've got the insane
- 1:12:09collection or whatever it's called trilogy and
- 1:12:12so we booted that up and then they were playing
- 1:12:13the first level of crash and i was like oh that's
- 1:12:16nice um none of the other levels because you
- 1:12:19don't want it yeah i was always i was always
- 1:12:22even then i think probably because i had an n64
- 1:12:25so i had access to mario 64 and banjo I never
- 1:12:28understood why Crash was bigger than Spyro because
- 1:12:31the Spyro games are just objectively better.
- 1:12:34In fact, I'll go a step further in light of reviews
- 1:12:38this week. Spyro is the best. Those Spyro games
- 1:12:42are the best games that studio ever made. I looked
- 1:12:45through the list of Insomniac games earlier because
- 1:12:48of the Wolverine reviews. And I was like, yeah,
- 1:12:51they probably are. I like Insomniac, but I think
- 1:12:54Spyro is the best of them ever made. came out
- 1:12:58on the on the 10th of september 25 years ago
- 1:13:01advanced wars um which feels like a hell of a
- 1:13:06so they released that and then the very next
- 1:13:08day real war was a very real thing good thing
- 1:13:10that one didn't get delayed geez yeah i was just
- 1:13:13gonna say that did that get delayed or something
- 1:13:15well no because it came out it came out the day
- 1:13:18before right but you can see a world yeah well
- 1:13:21I don't know that's probably the Japan release
- 1:13:23but you can I'll double check but you can see
- 1:13:25a world in which had that game been coming out
- 1:13:27a week later it might have literally just been
- 1:13:30quietly cancelled it's crazier still so it wasn't
- 1:13:33worldwide but it came out in the US first it
- 1:13:40didn't actually come out in Japan until 2004
- 1:13:43which Maybe that was why, but it did come out
- 1:13:47in Europe in very early 2002. But yeah, anyway,
- 1:13:51so that's 25 years old. It feels like a very,
- 1:13:53very close, because especially in light of, yeah,
- 1:13:57the last Advance Wars got delayed because of
- 1:13:59the Ukraine war. You wonder if that had been
- 1:14:02originally scheduled for two weeks later, would
- 1:14:03that game have ever come out? Would we have ever
- 1:14:05got Advance Wars? Like, it's, who knows? Nintendo
- 1:14:09can be very sensitive to that stuff. Also on
- 1:14:13the same day, a trio of fifth birthdays. Life
- 1:14:16is Strange True Colors, which I thought was okay.
- 1:14:20But I do think those games have got ever so slightly
- 1:14:23worse each time. WarioWare Get It Together. Good.
- 1:14:26All the WarioWare games are good. And Tales of
- 1:14:30Arise, which that's the last mainline Tales,
- 1:14:32right? I like that a lot. We've got to be about
- 1:14:36you. Yeah. I mean, they've done like so many
- 1:14:39remasters. Yeah, yeah. But that's how you pad
- 1:14:43out the time, right? And then over the weekend,
- 1:14:4620 Years of Cooking Mama, at least in the West,
- 1:14:50which I put on this list just because I was like,
- 1:14:52I just remember in that era, it being inescapable.
- 1:14:58Like people who worked in game, you know, mates
- 1:15:01who worked in game, that was one of the games
- 1:15:03that they would sell hundreds and hundreds of
- 1:15:05copies of week after week after week, like just
- 1:15:07a sleeper monster. Rule of Rose. Has anyone played
- 1:15:14this game? I just know it's expensive and I'm
- 1:15:17supposed to play it, but I don't want to buy
- 1:15:19it. Do you remember this, Tom? I remember it.
- 1:15:24I don't think I... I may have had a copy of this
- 1:15:27years ago. Do you remember what happened with
- 1:15:29it? I'm not sure I ever played it. I don't. It's
- 1:15:32like a vague controversy around it or something
- 1:15:35is there, but I can't remember what it is. So
- 1:15:37it's like a Silent Hill -esque game. um from
- 1:15:40a dev called punchline who i'm pretty sure no
- 1:15:43longer exist um but basically it's about a young
- 1:15:51survival horror game and you play like a 15 16
- 1:15:54year old girl and it's a creepy haunted it's
- 1:15:58a creepy orphanage where all the other kids are
- 1:16:01evil um and it's all melee combat you've got
- 1:16:04a dog that was the big thing this was the first
- 1:16:06great dog game before when Fable 2 was just a
- 1:16:09glint in Peter's eye. But as these games are,
- 1:16:14especially it's more Silent Hill aligned than
- 1:16:17Resident Evil aligned. And it's all melee focused.
- 1:16:21And a lot of the enemies, you know, the people
- 1:16:23who are attacking you, the people who are orchestrating
- 1:16:27it are kids. And a lot of the enemies are like
- 1:16:30dolls and things like that, very small. And it's
- 1:16:32all melee and it's quite violent. And basically...
- 1:16:38There was like a nonce panic about it. I still
- 1:16:43don't really understand why. I mean, there was
- 1:16:47a whole thing. Sony published it in Japan and
- 1:16:50then Sony chose not to publish it in the US because
- 1:16:53they were worried about their own corporate image,
- 1:16:57which fair enough. But this is a game that is
- 1:17:01about childhood and about kids. And it released
- 1:17:05in the US without... any real problem um but
- 1:17:11then when it came to europe it caused a big problem
- 1:17:16peggy gave it a 16 which tells you what they
- 1:17:19thought about the content but the um the eu commission
- 1:17:23did an investigation of peggy over it um it was
- 1:17:28banned in a bunch of countries and that is why
- 1:17:31mikhail it's so expensive because in one region
- 1:17:34it didn't come out it just got like it didn't
- 1:17:37like well not one region it came out in bits
- 1:17:39of europe so i think like um it came out in poland
- 1:17:42but the uk release for instance was cancelled
- 1:17:44because it was in the sun they were like pedophile
- 1:17:46game um with kids torturing each other that was
- 1:17:51the that was the tone um and i've got a review
- 1:17:57copy of this game which is I think that's how
- 1:17:59I had it. I think I had a review copy. And it's
- 1:18:03long gone. But I don't think I ever... I don't
- 1:18:06think... I mean, I could have played this and
- 1:18:09reviewed it. I mean, it's so long ago. I mean,
- 1:18:11my memory could be gone. But I'm pretty sure
- 1:18:13I had a review copy of this as well. The VSC
- 1:18:17in the UK, when all this panic was going on,
- 1:18:19credit to them. And they no longer oversee games,
- 1:18:21of course. But they actually were one of the
- 1:18:25calmer ones where... when the newspapers were
- 1:18:29going nuts, the Secretary General of the VSC
- 1:18:32at the time said, quote, and this is really strong,
- 1:18:36fair play to them, I don't think Peggy would
- 1:18:37ever be this strong, which is always the loss
- 1:18:39about taking game ratings out of VSC's hands.
- 1:18:41Quote, I have no idea where the suggestion of
- 1:18:44in -game sadomasochism has come from, nor children
- 1:18:46being buried underground. These are things that
- 1:18:48have been completely made up. We're not worried
- 1:18:50about our integrity being called into question
- 1:18:52because these quotes are nonsense. And I think
- 1:18:56that's, that's something you only get from a
- 1:18:58body that, you know, went through the exorcist
- 1:19:01and all this shit in the, in the seventies and
- 1:19:03eighties with cinema. Um, whereas Peggy just
- 1:19:06is like in a panic. Um, yeah. So rule of Rose,
- 1:19:09that is 20 years old. And Brent has just posted
- 1:19:12a link about, I've forgotten that story. Yeah.
- 1:19:14You, I was thinking, where do I remember this
- 1:19:17game from? That's, that's, I remembered that
- 1:19:19story coming out last year where, uh, I'm assuming
- 1:19:22because of course it was. the release was cancelled
- 1:19:24but i think the copies were already printed and
- 1:19:27they uh were floating around out there in the
- 1:19:29ether and then i think it was two years ago someone
- 1:19:32found like a big crate of them and sold them
- 1:19:33on ebay for like retail price which tanked the
- 1:19:37resale market which is good i wonder what it's
- 1:19:39at now um it probably is expensive again i just
- 1:19:45remember yeah 200 quid 300 quid 500 Sounds about
- 1:19:49right. So it's gone back up again now. So I'll
- 1:19:52cling on to my review copy. 802 pounds one sold
- 1:19:55for. For what? That's a US copy. It must be much
- 1:20:01rarer in the US. Had my breath taken away and
- 1:20:03everything. 802 pounds sold 7th of September.
- 1:20:08So sold literally a few days ago. Jesus. And
- 1:20:12then Capcom versus SNK 2 is 25 this weekend.
- 1:20:15Woo. Just a great game. And Company of Heroes,
- 1:20:18underrated. And I suppose dead now? No, it's
- 1:20:22getting a remaster. I mean, Company of Heroes
- 1:20:241 is getting a definitive edition. Yeah, I don't
- 1:20:27know when. So they do this weird stuff where
- 1:20:31those games are really old, right? Like they
- 1:20:33got ported to PC. I mean, they started on PC.
- 1:20:35They got this random old Steam release which
- 1:20:38kind of breaks on modern computers and stuff.
- 1:20:40But then the UK... company feral interactive
- 1:20:43they did this amazing switch and mobile version
- 1:20:46of it and i think now i assume they're using
- 1:20:49that as a base for the remaster because they
- 1:20:52did that for total war when that got remastered
- 1:20:54total war roam so i'm curious to see how that
- 1:20:56is but yeah like that was i think that was like
- 1:20:58the only quote -unquote game like that which
- 1:21:01was on switch one and i feel like mouse controls
- 1:21:04on switch 2 would be perfect for that so We'll
- 1:21:06see if it ever happens. See, I just thought the
- 1:21:08series was dead because obviously Sega killed,
- 1:21:10well, not killed, but Relic went independent
- 1:21:12and I assumed they didn't get the IP. No, they're
- 1:21:17self -publishing Company of Heroes 3 now. So
- 1:21:19that changed over. Okay, okay. That's good. It
- 1:21:21shows how much I remember. I loved that game,
- 1:21:23but I just, if I hope for anything, we haven't
- 1:21:26talked about the EA stuff this week, but there's
- 1:21:28rumblings at EA and every time I read about what
- 1:21:30the Saudis are planning to do with EA, I'm just
- 1:21:32like, just sell the Command & Conquer IP. Just
- 1:21:34sell it to someone who gives a shit. Anyway,
- 1:21:37this is a long one. So, yeah. Any last thoughts
- 1:21:43on any of those retrospective games that didn't
- 1:21:46just get mentioned? I think you could trade your
- 1:21:52review copy of Rule of Rules for the Command
- 1:21:54& Conquer license. That's probably what it's
- 1:21:57worth. Or you could probably buy one current
- 1:22:00-gen console. And here are the games that did
- 1:22:03come out on... this day brains because you asked
- 1:22:06mario hoops free on free 20 years ago 25 years
- 1:22:09ago the game boy color version of 007 the world
- 1:22:12is not enough okay which is as i recall is okay
- 1:22:15that was that era when there were really good
- 1:22:17weird little it's like that game boy metal gear
- 1:22:20solid brilliant um game boy advanced version
- 1:22:24of clonoa empire of dreams okay which again that's
- 1:22:28a funny one because then you've got game boy
- 1:22:30and gba running side by side at that time Um,
- 1:22:35so yeah, there you go. Those are your games.
- 1:22:37So not the most, um, not the most exciting day.
- 1:22:40There were other things going on to say the least.
- 1:22:43Um, Anything you want to plug gentlemen. My blog.
- 1:22:52Have you read my blog? Has everyone subscribed
- 1:22:54to my blog? Like potty mass .com. Brains. Where
- 1:22:58you're boasting about being a very good parent.
- 1:23:00I don't subscribe to anything, but all my emails
- 1:23:03are on, like, fucking spam lists anyway, so I
- 1:23:05might as well just put you on there. Thanks.
- 1:23:09Yeah, go and sign up to that. It's free. My wife
- 1:23:14said she didn't realise I was this funny. That's
- 1:23:21love. How long have you been married? I don't
- 1:23:24know. Been together about 17 years. So it took
- 1:23:26her that long to... That's fair enough. I don't
- 1:23:28blame her. I'm still waiting for the penny to
- 1:23:30drop on my end. Yeah. But yeah, so sign up to
- 1:23:35that. It's good. I write it, so I'm a bit biased,
- 1:23:37but yeah. I've signed up. There you go. There
- 1:23:42you go. It's that easy. I'll spare you the ways
- 1:23:44to upgrade now to a paid membership. I mean.
- 1:23:50God, all my friends pay me. I'll probably be
- 1:23:52able to make 50 quid a month from it. That's
- 1:23:57the big money bag there. Take that to the casino,
- 1:23:59put that on black and see what happens. I will
- 1:24:03plug Respec and RPGs actually because there's
- 1:24:07a lot of great Gamescom stuff up on both sides
- 1:24:12now. So like Respec, there's like an interview
- 1:24:14for Exodus, which is that new Mass Effect style
- 1:24:16game. There's Me on Lego Skylines, Dragostogma
- 1:24:202 Dark Arisen, Guns of Escapade, great Sunset
- 1:24:25Visitor. Thousand Times Resist interview that
- 1:24:27Mikael did. I wrote some stuff about Stranger
- 1:24:30Than Heaven, interviewed the devs. Crazy Taxid
- 1:24:32interviewed the devs. Ontos, Petty Planet, and
- 1:24:34a Final Fantasy VII Revelation interview. All
- 1:24:38that stuff is on respec .net right now, and there's
- 1:24:41more to come. We're not even done with all that
- 1:24:42Gamescom content. And similarly, RPG site, there's
- 1:24:46some overlap, so Exodus covered over there, but
- 1:24:49also Final Fantasy Resonance. A lot of indie
- 1:24:54devs. Final Fantasy Resonance Onimusha, Persona
- 1:24:594 Revival interview, Dragon Quest Monsters, loads
- 1:25:05of Final Fantasy. They had like four Final Fantasy
- 1:25:08articles yesterday. I would have found time to
- 1:25:11talk about that this week, but we are so out
- 1:25:13of time. So maybe we'll talk about it next. Well,
- 1:25:17not next week because I'm not here, but maybe
- 1:25:18the week after because I'm going to play it again
- 1:25:20at Tokyo Game Show. So there is that. So, yeah.
- 1:25:25Mikael, Brains, any last bits from you guys?
- 1:25:29I feel like I had something to say, but I forgot.
- 1:25:31So, you know, maybe next time. Next time. See
- 1:25:34you, Emil. Sound. Well, until next week, everyone,
- 1:25:37we will see you. Don't forget, if you are a patron,
- 1:25:40you will be able to flip right on over or continue
- 1:25:42in your feed now to listen to this week's episode
- 1:25:45of The Lock -In, our exclusive podcast. We've
