Latest / Inside the Birds: A Philadelphia Eagles Podcast / Birds Weekly With Derrick Gunn, Barrett Brooks: Can We Realistically Pick The Eagles Vs. Commanders?
Transcript
- 0:10Speaker 1: Hey, everybody. Week 8 is upon us as the Philadelphia
- 0:13Speaker 1: Eagles get ready to take on the Washington Commanders in
- 0:16Speaker 1: a Sunday night encounter. This is Birds Weekly presented by
- 0:20Speaker 1: the Inside the Birds Network. For my man, former Eagle,
- 0:24Speaker 1: former Steeler, former Denver Bronco for a minute, former, what, Packer,
- 0:28Speaker 1: Detroit Lion?
- 0:30Speaker 2: I collected many checks from many owners.
- 0:32Speaker 1: Barrett Brooks, I'm Derrick Gunn, and B. Brooks. Both of
- 0:37Speaker 1: these teams suck. I'm going to just tell it like
- 0:39Speaker 1: it is. They both suck right now.
- 0:42Speaker 2: I don't know. I don't know.
- 0:43Speaker 1: Washington is bringing up the rear of the NFC East.
- 0:45Speaker 1: The Eagles are right above them.
- 0:47Speaker 2: And B.
- 0:48Speaker 1: Brooks, you know, we talked earlier in the week about
- 0:51Speaker 1: Tanner McKee making a turn and looking more comfortable in
- 0:54Speaker 1: the offense. I expect him to grow even more so
- 0:58Speaker 1: because Washington's defense is not as bad as Dallas' defense
- 1:03Speaker 1: on paper. But Washington's defense– It's not all that great.
- 1:07Speaker 1: So I expect Tanner to have a measure of success
- 1:10Speaker 1: against Washington. I think that he played well enough to
- 1:14Speaker 1: win last week. He played good, man.
- 1:17Speaker 3: I like the way he was going to go out
- 1:19Speaker 3: there and dink and dunk. They customized the offense around
- 1:22Speaker 3: his skill set. You could see the natural progression of
- 1:25Speaker 3: him learning and being around that system for one week
- 1:31Speaker 3: by himself being the starter, having all the starter reps.
- 1:34Speaker 2: That was great.
- 1:36Speaker 3: And plus, he has some guys around him that can play.
- 1:38Speaker 3: You know, Landon Dickinson being back is huge. Kendall being
- 1:41Speaker 3: back is huge. All that stuff is big because, you know,
- 1:45Speaker 3: health is wealth, man. And the more people you give back,
- 1:48Speaker 3: the better you're going to get. Now, I don't know
- 1:50Speaker 3: if we're going to have Saquon going forward. You know,
- 1:52Speaker 3: we'll see. But I'll say this. When he was in
- 1:55Speaker 3: the game, they were balling. They would do what they
- 1:58Speaker 3: wanted to do. You know, play action was working because
- 2:00Speaker 3: they ran the ball consistently. He's definitely somebody that defenses
- 2:03Speaker 3: have to focus on. Now, You're talking about a commander's
- 2:08Speaker 3: team that they almost beat us the first time we met.
- 2:12Speaker 2: True.
- 2:13Speaker 3: And their defense isn't as bad. I mean, Frankie Lou,
- 2:16Speaker 3: he's like a pain in my butt, man. He gets
- 2:21Speaker 3: on my nerves always doing something crazy, man, or hitting somebody.
- 2:25Speaker 2: He's just one of those guys that he just want
- 2:27Speaker 2: to make life just bad, man.
- 2:30Speaker 3: I just want him on my team, bro, but he's
- 2:33Speaker 3: a thorn, man. I mean, and He's a baller, and
- 2:36Speaker 3: I look at the rest of their defense.
- 2:38Speaker 2: Sonny Stiles, the rookie from Ohio State?
- 2:40Speaker 1: Yes, yes.
- 2:41Speaker 2: Straight baller.
- 2:43Speaker 1: Yes.
- 2:43Speaker 2: Straight baller.
- 2:43Speaker 3: Say what you want to say?
- 2:47Speaker 2: Rasul Douglas has been balling, too. Yeah, man.
- 2:50Speaker 1: The old man, Rasul Douglas.
- 2:52Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 2:53Speaker 2: And I like their safety, Nick Cross.
- 2:56Speaker 1: Okay.
- 2:57Speaker 3: He plays a physical brand of football.
- 2:59Speaker 2: He's a fast player. You know, he ran like a 4-3-4-D.
- 3:02Speaker 2: Really good safety, man.
- 3:03Speaker 3: So I think they have enough that they can make
- 3:07Speaker 3: life hard on us if.
- 3:10Speaker 2: We go out there and try to do the same
- 3:11Speaker 2: thing we did against Dallas.
- 3:12Speaker 3: It'll be a long day for our defense again, though,
- 3:15Speaker 3: because I really do like their offense, man.
- 3:17Speaker 2: Jaden Daniels can play.
- 3:18Speaker 1: Yes.
- 3:19Speaker 3: And if he has some more weapons, you know, he's
- 3:22Speaker 3: got a lot of guys hurt also. Terry McLaurin's out.
- 3:25Speaker 3: Out for the season, yep. So I don't know. You know,
- 3:29Speaker 3: Stephon Diggs, I don't like him, but I got to
- 3:32Speaker 3: respect Yeah.
- 3:35Speaker 1: Well, if you're Sean Mannion, after you've seen what Tanner
- 3:40Speaker 1: McKee could do for the first two quarters plus against Dallas,
- 3:45Speaker 1: if you're working with Tanner and you're Sean Mannion, where
- 3:50Speaker 1: do you take him to the next level now for
- 3:51Speaker 1: the next game on a short week? What are some
- 3:53Speaker 1: of the things you want to see Tanner do a
- 3:55Speaker 1: little bit better against Washington on Sunday night?
- 3:58Speaker 3: Well, more and more, I'll be asking him, what do
- 4:00Speaker 3: you like best now? Now you're going into your third game.
- 4:04Speaker 3: What route combinations do you like? What can you check to?
- 4:07Speaker 3: If you see this blitz, how can you counter this blitz?
- 4:11Speaker 3: I think the blitz pickup will get better for him.
- 4:14Speaker 3: Side adjustments will get better for him. Calling his own
- 4:16Speaker 3: plays will get better for him. And I think that's
- 4:18Speaker 3: the biggest thing. He'll put us in a better position
- 4:21Speaker 3: because he can definitely get the ball out on time.
- 4:24Speaker 3: He definitely does that very, very well. I think that's
- 4:27Speaker 3: a big thing. His big thing is It's making sure
- 4:30Speaker 3: he keeps the offense on time and doing that. We
- 4:33Speaker 3: can win some games, man, with him.
- 4:38Speaker 1: Who's running the football for the Eagles? I mean, you
- 4:42Speaker 1: got to establish some kind of ground game. So, I mean, now.
- 4:46Speaker 2: All right, I'm holding on.
- 4:50Speaker 1: You got to have auditions or something, man.
- 4:53Speaker 2: Come on, man.
- 4:54Speaker 1: You're wrong for that, B.
- 4:55Speaker 2: Brooks.
- 4:56Speaker 1: You're wrong.
- 4:57Speaker 3: I'm trying, man, but I'm just looking. I'm looking at
- 4:59Speaker 3: the roster. You got Damian Pierce and Saquon Barkley, the
- 5:03Speaker 3: only two running backs on the 53-man roster right now.
- 5:06Speaker 1: They're both hurt. Yeah.
- 5:08Speaker 2: Both of them are hurt. Both of them are out
- 5:10Speaker 2: right now. On the P-Squad, who would we pick? I've
- 5:21Speaker 2: never seen anything like this.
- 5:23Speaker 1: Okay.
- 5:23Speaker 2: We got Jada Blue. Okay. From Texas.
- 5:27Speaker 1: And that's it?
- 5:30Speaker 2: Elijah Mitchell.
- 5:32Speaker 4: Everything in life comes down to choice, doesn't it? Whether
- 5:35Speaker 4: it's choosing the team you root for, who you listen to,
- 5:38Speaker 4: or how you power your home, you deserve the freedom
- 5:40Speaker 4: to choose your own adventure. And that goes for your
- 5:43Speaker 4: power bill, too. Right now, across the U.S., Americans have
- 5:46Speaker 4: the potential to harness limitless, clean, affordable energy. We could
- 5:50Speaker 4: be powering our hospitals, our schools, our farms, and so
- 5:53Speaker 4: much more. In some places, this abundant local power is
- 5:57Speaker 4: already helping lower utility bills and creating jobs. But depending
- 6:01Speaker 4: on where you live, you may not have the option
- 6:04Speaker 4: to choose limitless energy for your household. That has to change.
- 6:08Speaker 4: We should all get to choose the energy we pay for. Cheaper, cleaner,
- 6:13Speaker 4: limitless energy is out there. Let's find more ways to
- 6:16Speaker 4: use it. Head over to energylimitless.com to learn more about
- 6:20Speaker 4: your energy options. So this hit me when I was
- 6:22Speaker 4: doing work around the house the other day and trying
- 6:25Speaker 4: to open up some boxes and cut some things that
- 6:28Speaker 4: I can never find the scissors or knives in my house.
- 6:30Speaker 4: And how great would it be if I just had
- 6:33Speaker 4: my own personal pocket knife that I had on me
- 6:36Speaker 4: all the time. And that's why I can't wait to
- 6:39Speaker 4: get my Benchmade knives. They've got this legendary bug out knife.
- 6:42Speaker 4: It's designed specifically as an everyday carry knife. It's incredibly lightweight,
- 6:47Speaker 4: but it doesn't feel cheap or flimsy. And it's famous
- 6:50Speaker 4: for its exceptional strength to weight ratio. All right, the
- 6:53Speaker 4: premium $ 30 V stainless steel blade holds an edge for
- 6:57Speaker 4: an incredibly long time. And then there's the one handed
- 7:00Speaker 4: ambidextrous axis lock that makes it so easy and satisfying
- 7:04Speaker 4: to open and close. So whether you're using it around
- 7:06Speaker 4: the house, taking it outdoors, this is the kind of
- 7:09Speaker 4: quality knife you can actually depend on.
- 7:11Speaker 2: Here's what really sets Benchmade apart.
- 7:13Speaker 4: They offer a lifetime warranty and free sharpening on all
- 7:17Speaker 4: of their knives. So whether your knife needs a fresh
- 7:19Speaker 4: edge or a full tune up, they'll clean it, oil it,
- 7:22Speaker 4: sharpen it, adjust it to factory specifications. And when you
- 7:24Speaker 4: buy a Benchmade knife, you're truly buying it for life.
- 7:29Speaker 4: The bug out might be the everyday carry, but Benchmade
- 7:32Speaker 4: makes knives for just about every job. So you could
- 7:34Speaker 4: be hunting, fishing, camping, or you could be just cooking
- 7:37Speaker 4: something in your kitchen and you need that dependable tool,
- 7:40Speaker 4: and that's what Benchmade is built for. So upgrade your
- 7:43Speaker 4: everyday carry at Benchmade.com. That's Benchmade.com for knives built to
- 7:48Speaker 4: last a lifetime. After you purchase, they'll ask you where
- 7:50Speaker 4: you heard about them. Please support our show. Let them
- 7:53Speaker 4: know Inside the Bird sent you.
- 7:56Speaker 2: Two guys.
- 7:58Speaker 1: Okay.
- 8:00Speaker 2: And that's it? I mean, come on, man. I'm trying, man.
- 8:08Speaker 2: I'm trying. I'm really trying. I think.
- 8:12Speaker 3: We did put Elijah Moore out there as a runner back.
- 8:15Speaker 1: Okay.
- 8:16Speaker 2: Okay. All right.
- 8:17Speaker 3: But Elijah Moore's a receiver, and he was just faking.
- 8:20Speaker 3: They were just putting him out there to fake something.
- 8:21Speaker 3: So a gadget play.
- 8:24Speaker 1: The biggest thing I want to see is which Eagles
- 8:28Speaker 1: defense shows up against Washington State. Because leading up to
- 8:32Speaker 1: this game, if I'm Vic Fangio, I'm establishing the fear
- 8:36Speaker 1: of God in my defensive players after what they did
- 8:40Speaker 1: on Monday night against Dallas. There is no excuse on
- 8:43Speaker 1: this planet for that collection of talent to have a
- 8:46Speaker 1: similar game as to what they did Monday night against
- 8:48Speaker 1: the Cowboys. Washington has good receivers. They have Antonio Williams.
- 8:53Speaker 1: They have Stephon Diggs. They have Traylon Burks. Those guys
- 8:56Speaker 1: ain't C.D. Lamb and George Pickens. I expect to see
- 8:59Speaker 1: a much better better performance by this Eagles defense. If
- 9:03Speaker 1: I don't, we're going to be screaming bloody murder come Monday, Tuesday,
- 9:07Speaker 1: Wednesday of next week about this defense basically is quitting
- 9:11Speaker 1: on Vic Fangio.
- 9:12Speaker 3: That's absolutely right, man, because there's no excuse for them
- 9:15Speaker 3: to play the way they play and express with the
- 9:16Speaker 3: talent they have.
- 9:17Speaker 2: Now, can you get guys playing physical? That's the biggest thing.
- 9:20Speaker 2: Can you get more out of the two cornerstone guys at.
- 9:24Speaker 3: The defensive line? That's the whole thing for me. If
- 9:28Speaker 3: I can get those guys to play on the other
- 9:30Speaker 3: side of the line of scrimmage, along with Mauro Jomo,
- 9:32Speaker 3: we got a fighting chance. But if those guys don't
- 9:35Speaker 3: turn it up, it don't matter what we do. It'll
- 9:38Speaker 3: be a track meet again for their running backs.
- 9:42Speaker 2: It'll be a track meet, man.
- 9:43Speaker 3: And we just can't afford to run a track with
- 9:45Speaker 3: anybody because we can't go tit for tat.
- 9:47Speaker 2: I mean, we just don't have it.
- 9:49Speaker 3: I mean, and Rashad White is a good running back.
- 9:52Speaker 2: He's killed us before in Tampa Bay. So, I mean,
- 9:55Speaker 2: we have Rashad White. Eckler is back, too.
- 9:58Speaker 1: What? We've got to figure out a way, man. We've
- 10:01Speaker 1: got to figure out a way. Take me inside the
- 10:03Speaker 1: locker room. You are Nick Sirianni. You're in the locker
- 10:06Speaker 1: room an hour before kickoff. You're looking to your right,
- 10:10Speaker 1: your left, in front of you, behind you. You're looking
- 10:13Speaker 1: into the faces of your players. And what are you
- 10:15Speaker 1: telling them?
- 10:18Speaker 3: If you don't want to play physical, if you want
- 10:20Speaker 3: to play this lame, like a gladiator sport, then you
- 10:23Speaker 3: need to get up out of here.
- 10:24Speaker 2: Period.
- 10:25Speaker 3: Because if I don't see 50, no, was it 46?
- 10:29Speaker 3: 46 men out there just going all out, then you
- 10:34Speaker 3: need not walk back into this locker room. Because we
- 10:37Speaker 3: pay you too much money to be out there just,
- 10:40Speaker 3: you know, freestyling and just going through the motions. We
- 10:44Speaker 3: need guys that want to go out there and rip
- 10:46Speaker 3: somebody's heads off.
- 10:47Speaker 4: Hey, Philly fans, game day is stressful enough. Parking, traffic,
- 10:52Speaker 4: long lines, we've all been there. But when it comes
- 10:54Speaker 4: to your cannabis... Camden Apothecary makes it easy. This is
- 10:59Speaker 4: the dispensary for sports fans. Just minutes outside of Philly
- 11:03Speaker 4: with plenty of free parking. You'll be in and out fast,
- 11:06Speaker 4: no hassle, no waiting, and they don't just care about convenience.
- 11:10Speaker 4: Camden Apothecary is all about the guest experience. Their staff
- 11:14Speaker 4: makes sure you feel taken care of every time you
- 11:18Speaker 4: walk in. Plus, they carry only the best quality cannabis
- 11:22Speaker 4: at the fairest price.
- 11:23Speaker 2: Prices.
- 11:23Speaker 4: So whether you're stocking up for the tailgate, the watch party,
- 11:27Speaker 4: or celebrating a big win, you know you're getting the
- 11:30Speaker 4: good stuff without overpaying. They even show love to the
- 11:33Speaker 4: community with specials for fans, students, service members, and healthcare pros.
- 11:39Speaker 4: Camden Apothecary. Top quality cannabis, great prices, and an experience
- 11:44Speaker 4: made for Philly fans 21 and up.
- 11:47Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying? We need somebody to rip
- 11:50Speaker 2: up trees by the roots. That's what we need.
- 11:52Speaker 3: We need some intensity, man. We don't have any intensity
- 11:55Speaker 3: on that side of the ball. I mean, you got
- 11:58Speaker 3: guys who want to say, all right, you know, you
- 12:00Speaker 3: want to reroute. We didn't reroute any receivers. We go
- 12:03Speaker 3: up there, play title, like we're going to reroute them,
- 12:05Speaker 3: and then back straight up. Don't even do that, dude,
- 12:07Speaker 3: if you're going to do that. If you're going to
- 12:10Speaker 3: get up there, put your hands on them. You're fast enough.
- 12:12Speaker 2: You're quick enough to run with them. They just don't
- 12:15Speaker 2: do it, man.
- 12:15Speaker 3: So until they get some physicality, some want to, It's
- 12:20Speaker 3: going to be a tough, tough rest of the season, man.
- 12:22Speaker 2: All right, B.
- 12:24Speaker 1: Brooks, give me a score for Sunday night's game.
- 12:32Speaker 2: Man, I can't.
- 12:32Speaker 1: 21-17. Who?
- 12:34Speaker 2: Commanders.
- 12:36Speaker 1: What?
- 12:37Speaker 2: Homer Brooks?
- 12:39Speaker 1: Picking against the Eagles? Man, I'm tired of lying. I'm
- 12:42Speaker 1: just tired of lying. You've been lying to me for years.
- 12:46Speaker 1: Why are you tired of it now?
- 12:47Speaker 2: For years.
- 12:48Speaker 3: And for years, this team would back me up. But
- 12:50Speaker 3: they can't back me up anymore, so I got to
- 12:52Speaker 3: tell the truth. I cannot tell a lie.
- 12:54Speaker 1: The fact that this team can barely score 21 points,
- 12:59Speaker 1: I don't see it. And I know Washington is not
- 13:02Speaker 1: a juggernaut on both sides of the ball. They're a
- 13:05Speaker 1: decent team. They're a competitive team. I mean, this is
- 13:07Speaker 1: a team that tied the Giants in overtime. And then
- 13:11Speaker 1: the next week, They came within six points of beating
- 13:14Speaker 1: San Francisco. They should have beat San Francisco. So now
- 13:18Speaker 1: they're well-rested and coming off a bye with those two
- 13:21Speaker 1: things in the back of their minds. You know, we
- 13:23Speaker 1: went toe-to-toe with the Giants who lead our division, and
- 13:26Speaker 1: San Francisco, one of the toughest teams in all of football,
- 13:29Speaker 1: we came close to beating. We owe San Francisco the
- 13:32Speaker 1: 23 points, and we should have beat them when we
- 13:34Speaker 1: beat ourselves. So I'm taking Washington in this game 24-17.
- 13:40Speaker 1: That's my story.
- 13:41Speaker 2: I'm singing to it. We got next. We got next.
- 13:44Speaker 2: We're going to beat the Eagles now. That's where they
- 13:45Speaker 2: are right now, man.
- 13:46Speaker 1: That's wrong. That's wrong. I hope we're both wrong come
- 13:50Speaker 1: Sunday night, man, after we watch this game. And I
- 13:53Speaker 1: hope we have something positive to talk about next week
- 13:57Speaker 1: after this game. So until the Washington Eagles game is
- 13:59Speaker 1: all said and done, for B. Brooks, I'm D. Gunn.
- 14:02Speaker 1: This has been Birds Weekly presented by the Inside the
- 14:04Speaker 1: Birds Network. So long, everybody.
