- 0:07The 1971 Major League Baseball All-Star Game took place at Tiger Stadium in Detroit on Tuesday, July 13, 1971.
- 0:16This was the third time that Detroit had hosted the All-Star Game. It was known as Briggs Stadium in both 1941 and 1951.
- 0:24The starting lineup of each team included six future Hall of Famers, as well as both of the managers.
- 0:31The National League was managed by Cincinnati's Sparky Anderson, who won the National League pennant with the Reds in his first season as manager at the age of 36.
- 0:40The American League was managed by Baltimore's Earl Weaver, who won the World Series in 1970, his third year with the club at the age of 39.
- 0:48This audio recording is from the NBC Radio broadcast featuring announcer Jim Simpson and Sandy Kofax.
- 1:19Hello everyone from Tiger Stadium in the Black Michigan. This is Jim Simpson with Sandy Kofax and welcome to the 42nd All-Star Baseball Game.
- 1:29The National League has won the last eight in a row, 12 of the last 13, not counting as five back in 1961.
- 1:35And after one time treading 12 to four after the 1949 game, now the National Lakers find themselves with a 23 to 17 bulge over the American League.
- 1:45At the American Lakers, who will start Young By The Blue tonight, will try to break that scheme at eight.
- 1:51The 42nd annual All-Star Game brought to you by Phillips 66. At Phillips 66, its performance accounts.
- 1:59Gillette Platinum Plus, the razor blade for the Platinum School Desert, for smoother shades.
- 2:05Chrysler Corporation, extra care and engineering. Your host tonight, your local Dodge dealer.
- 2:11The Retail Parks International Association, dedicated exclusively to the interest of store workers and by the makers of STP Oil Treatment, STP Gas Treatment and STP Keep Cool Radiator Treatment.
- 2:25Tiger Stadium, Detroit, Michigan, shortly after 7 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. The temperature is 86 degrees. The wind will be effective here tonight.
- 2:35At least we think so. It is a 23 miles out of the west, gusting to 33 miles. And Tiger Stadium, Detroit, is the hitter's ballpark and it is growing right toward right field.
- 2:45And it's only 325 down that right field line with the upper deck projecting 15 feet closer to the infield.
- 2:53Tiger Stadium right now, with sun still shining in parks of right field and down the right field line.
- 2:58The lights have been on for more than an hour. They're spraying the infield and lining the infield and the outfield. Soldiers and sailors and air force and Marines, all carrying American flags.
- 3:11The color guard out in center field and the outfield tonight for the first time in our memory of All-Star play has stars at left, center and right.
- 3:19They are red, white and blue. Waiting the introduction of the 42nd All-Star squad of the National American League and of course the playing and singing of our National Anthem.
- 3:29The National Anthem
- 3:43Well, I said that Santa Cofax is with me and Sandy as the National Ligger, 8 in a row, 12 of the last 13, 23 to 17 the National Liggers lead and with a loan up that starts off with Woody Mays, second only to Babe Ruth in hitting home runs, followed by Hank Aaron, third only to Babe Ruth hitting home runs and followed by Tori Stardes, McCovey and Bench.
- 4:05The Lenders are all in for the American Lurgs. It's hard to say why the National League has had this dominance in the last few years. I do know having been a member at one time of the National League squad, there's a great pride in the All-Star game.
- 4:19The players take pride in it. For many years the American League led the National League in All-Star victories and the players in the National League felt like they wanted to do something about it. I'm sure now that the National League is 1, 8 in a row, I would have to think that the American League is out to end that sort of thing.
- 4:38I think each league always feels that their league is the best one and it's awfully important to the players and I think this year will be no different. As you said the National League has that great power in the lineup but when you come down to a single game or short series, I think pitching pretty much can dominate and alter the course of the ball game.
- 4:59As you said this is a left-hand hitters ballpark. The American League in this game has four left-hand pitchers on their pitching staff. The National League only has one. That could be a big factor in the series.
- 5:13The fact that a young man by the name of Vida Blue is starting for the American League could be a big factor also. I think this summer he's become the most exciting name in baseball and I think it'll be great for the public and for the National League to get to take a look at this fine left-hand adventure.
- 5:33Now down the left-hand line right now where the American League bullpen is, Vida Blue is warming up and of course he has that chili green and white uniform of Charlie Finley's Oakland Athletics.
- 5:44And Vida Blue leads the American League and all the major leagues in pitching with 17 victories thus far. He also leads in Erlen Average 1.42 and is a switch hitter.
- 5:56I bring that up because Doc Ellis, the right-hander for the National League from the Pittsburgh Pirates, leads the National League in victories with 14, leads the National League in Erlen Average with 2.10 and like Vida Blue is a switch hitter.
- 6:10In a moment we're going to hear a conversation between Sandy and both Vida Blue and Doc Ellis tonight's starting pitchers.
- 6:16I remind you that tonight's game is being beamed by radio. The Mexico, Aruba, Puerto Rico, Guatemala, the Virgin Islands, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Colombia, Canada, El Salvador, the Dominican Republic, Ursa, Panama, Venezuela, and Honduras.
- 6:30And our friends at the American Forces Radio Network are broadcasting this game around the world on some 400 stations.
- 6:37First here in the United States, the NBC Radio Network of 234 stations is sharing the game plus 100 non-affiliated stations. And we greet the many millions who are listening here and abroad, and I'm sure as they begin to introduce the National League All-Stars now, you are going to have quite an evening.
- 6:54And that is quite an ovation they gave what they made. But the subject of static go-fax brought up is pitching. And as we said, he talked to Vida Blue before the game.
- 7:03Vida Blue not yet 22 years old, 17 victories. The American League starting pitcher tonight, and here is that conversation.
- 7:11One, two, three, four, that's no fun.
- 7:16Vida's been a great, happy year for you so far. Now tonight you're going to start your first All-Star game. Is there any difference between the All-Star game going into it and the rest of the season so far?
- 7:26We all say you're facing a whole different lineup. There are eight, or even nine guys that are capable of hitting the ball out of the ballpark for a long ways.
- 7:35And you have to go out with them in mind that you've got to respect these guys and just try to make them hit your pitches and hope that they keep their sides of the ballpark on the whole.
- 7:44Hope that they hit the ball at some point.
- 7:46If you're starting this game, you know you can only go three innings at the most. You think that there's a possibility you might go with a fast ball even a little bit more than you would in a normal ball game, knowing you don't have to finish it?
- 7:57That's true, Sandy. Knowing that I am going only three innings, I can't go out and maybe try to hop up as we say sometime.
- 8:05I may just throw maybe even a hundred percent fast ball. It all depends on the batters themselves. The fair time in my fast ball may go to my change-up ball, may go to my curve ball.
- 8:17Like I said, all depends on the type of pitching that I'm doing. I just might make them hit my breaking pitch.
- 8:23Earlier this season, I saw you pitch in Minneapolis and against the Twins. The first time I'd ever seen you, and what really amazed me was your control.
- 8:33Is this something that happened all of a sudden or have you always had good control?
- 8:37Well, I pitch in courts. I think I would have to contribute it to him. He opposed that. He's done a magnificent job with me.
- 8:45He knows me better than anyone else in baseball. He works with me every chance. I think it was really paid off.
- 8:52My control has been just super amazing. I'm going to provide good luck to you tonight. We look forward to seeing you the rest of the season in the Divisional Playoffs, maybe even a World Series and an All-Star game next year.
- 9:05Okay, Sandy, that sounds good. Thank you.
- 9:07We have been listening in on a conversation between the greatest left-hander of the mall, Sandy Kofak, and a promising young left-hander tonight's starting pitcher, 21-year-old, the fighter Blue.
- 9:17Doc Ellis of the Pittsburgh Pirates, the 14-game winner, continues to warm up out of the National League both then, and Doc did not expect to start tonight's ball game.
- 9:25As a matter of fact, Sparky Anderson, the coach, I should say the manager of Cincinnati, called Danny Murtaugh, the manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates,
- 9:33and was told that Doc Ellis probably would pitch Saturday and perhaps Sunday, where if I'm Sparky said, well, if that's the case, he will not be able to start on Tuesday night.
- 9:42But as that Eastern Division in the National League opened up and the Pirates took a pretty good lead, they now lead by 10 big games over the New York Mets,
- 9:50Ellis was able to be rested over the weekend, and thus Sparky, Chains, is behind, and Doc Ellis is the starting pitcher tonight.
- 9:57The throws you hear are for Earl Weaver on the Baltimore Orioles. The reason being, and Weaver is laughing about it,
- 10:04when it's proved now that the Baltimore Orioles, the big first baseman, was not selected in his initial selection of other players, Weaver did not pick the first favorite first baseman, Norm Cash.
- 10:14Cash is now on the spot, and that's why Earl Weaver got the move. But the substitute we said is pitching, and Doc Ellis is starting tonight, and Sandy Kofack's talk with the Pittsburgh Pirates quite handed.
- 10:26Doc, I know this is your first off-star game. What do you think, like you're coming out here now, going to start the off-star game?
- 10:36Well, it's a thrill to be here, and before I started, it was an honor to be picked as a starting pitcher. I mean, you know how I feel, and I can't say anything.
- 10:47What I can say is that I want to get out there and pitch. What about the hitters? Do you normally, during the years, go over the hitters, you worry about knowing the hitters, and just a little bit difficult for you tonight,
- 10:57or you just sort of go out there, try and get to do it, the spots, with your best stuff?
- 11:01Basically, that's what I'm going to do, Sandy. I'm going to try to put my best stuff on two spots, and as you know, I've never seen any of the hitters,
- 11:08but if they win my league, I would have a book on them, but I'm going to scratch today.
- 11:13Well, you haven't pitched one in six days, I believe. I think you're having too much rest up to search you.
- 11:19Well, as you know yourself, that sometimes a lot of reps can hurt you, and sometimes you can come back and throw real good with it, but I don't know, that's just to be seen.
- 11:28Well, Doc, all I can say is good luck, and I know it's your first one, and I'm sure it won't be the last one. Good luck to you for many years.
- 11:35I need a holdout about you. Thank you, Doc.
- 11:39The introductions of the American League All-Cars continue, and Doc Ellis continues to warm up, and the bullpen along the right field line by the blue continues to throw down the left field line.
- 11:48Most of the American Lakers have now been introduced, and now here come the rest of the American League squad, out to the third base line.
- 11:55The National League waiting patiently along the first base line, and as we said, ringing the infield and the outfield.
- 12:00Servicemen and women from all forces waiting now for the playing and singing of our National Anthem.
- 12:08Norm Cash, whom Earl Weaver neglected to pick, as we were telling you before the Doc Ellis interview, got a standing ovation from the more than 52,000 here at Tiger Stadium in Detroit.
- 12:20This is the third All-Star game to be played in Detroit. Back in 1941, everybody remembers the ninth inning home run hit by young Ted Williams, or Cloud Class O, that won the game for the American League 7-5.
- 12:34And in 1951, ten years later, the National League won that game by a score of 8-3.
- 12:41They're now introducing Cookie Rojas, the name of the holders of the Kansas City Royals, Marty Patten of the Breweries.
- 12:47As we said, this is the 42nd annual All-Star game. The National League leads 23-17, and the big story tonight is that the American League, without catcher Ray Foster, without first baseman Boo Powell,
- 12:59without the League's leading hitter, right-sealer Tonya Leaver, all of whom have had to beg off because of injury, the American League is going to try to break that eight-game losing streak.
- 13:08In a moment, we'll have the National Anthem and Charlie Garenge will toss out the first baseball. And as usual for all important baseball games, there are not four but rather six umpires who are now walking out below us.
- 13:21Behind the plate from the American League will be Frank Humont, the veteran All-Star umpire of the staff. It is fourth. At first base from the National League, Paul Clark.
- 13:30J.C.O. Donald of the American League will be at second base. At third base, Doug Harvey from the National League, down the left field line, Nick Colossi of the National League, and now on the right field line, Don Denkinger of the American League.
- 13:43Now, we have just seen that one of the Marines who was standing out attention holding a flag, apparently has suffered a case of nevices or heat prostration has been led away.
- 13:53But now we stand for the flag and singing by Robert Taylor of our National Anthem.
- 15:23Well, there's an impressive sight here at Tiger Stadium in Detroit and we cannot help but call. The last time we were in Detroit for a game of importance such as this, the 1968 World Series, in which the Tigers down three games to one came back on the strong left arm of Mickey Lovitch to win the series four games to three.
- 15:52And the orders of Lovitch will pitch for final two innings of the night's ball game. White and blue expected to start and will start the American League. Our colors for the National League.
- 16:05And we'll return to action and pregame comment in a moment. The retail clerk's international association has in its ranks, 20,000 of teenage store workers who through their union enjoy good working conditions. They know that to attain sound objectives both for themselves and their country, they need clear heads and healthy bodies.
- 16:22The retail clerk union urges the youth of America to avoid harmful drug habits and to register both so that they can make vital contributions to next year's election. This message from the retail clerk's international association, Washington DC, two, 006.
- 16:38You got yourself an anti first birth and you're still getting wet. So enough already. Get tough. If you feel getting wet, why not start getting tough? But why God has to first for everything? You could try and stop.
- 16:57You just can't get a more effective anti wetness agent in any other Aristotle's right guard.
- 17:13Jim Simpson was standing go back Charlie Garinger, a Hall of Famer from Detroit has just toughed out the first ball to build free handers. The court catcher has Earl Weaver, a Baltimore and Sparky Anderson of Cincinnati are meeting with the umpire.
- 17:28The fourth, the teeny Farragona and the 12 year old champion Wallace, the second, the second. The umpire, as we said, Frank Humano, the American League behind the place, Paul Farth, the National League at first, Jake LaDonnell, the American League at second, Doug Harvey, the National League at third,
- 17:43Nick Colossi at the National League and left and Don Denkinger of the American League in right. And the American League off stars have taken the field. Don Cash of Detroit at first base, Rod Carreau of Minnesota at second,
- 17:56Larissa Haparishio of the Boston Red Sox at shortstop Brooks Robinson at third base from Baltimore, Carl Yastrinsky the Red Sox and left Bobby Mercer of the Yankees and centers, Frank Robinson the Orals and right, Bill Priyana, Detroit behind the plate and fighter blue of the Oakland A's now taking a warm up pitch.
- 18:14The National League starting lineup at a moment, but first we call it 10 seconds for station identification.
- 18:20This is Steve Fitzgerald, contact host, Paulus Leithneis from HMidnight. Here on the fresh air sound of Radio 81 WGY's Connected E.
- 18:29Again with Santa Cofac, Jim Zinson and here is that National League starting lineup. Again we point out this out of the Willie Mays with 642 lifetime homeruns second only to Babe Ruth leads it off and plays center field.
- 18:46This is the seventh time that Mays has let off an off-tar game for the National League and Hank Aaron is in right field in youth 20 at off-tar game and he is third only to Babe Ruth with 616 lifetime homeruns.
- 18:58Joe Choi the National League's leading hitter bats third and plays at third base. Willie Starchel 30 homeruns 87 RBIs the batting average of 320. His homerun and RBIs lead at the Major League will play left field and bat cleanup.
- 19:12Willie McCovey of the Giants will be at first base. Johnny Bench some question about his left wrist is alright and will be behind the place batting sixth. Glenn Beckert of the Chicago Cubs at second base batting seventh.
- 19:23But Haroldson of the New York Mets makes his first start as an all-star shortstop and Mark Ellis is one 14 and lost three will be on the mound.
- 19:31And as Vada Blue warms up and the umpires talk things over with Sparky Anderson and Earl Weaver standing go back to that. I know you've been watching with interest the warm-up of Vada Blue.
- 19:41Tim I love watching fellow who can throw his heart as blue dead. He's got a great fastball. We saw him earlier this year. He doesn't throw the curveball that much.
- 19:51I don't believe tonight he will. He has a little bit of advantage here on the hitters. They haven't seen him and I think that's always an advantage for the pitcher.
- 20:02Sandy now let's see if we can pick up Frank Uman on the manager.
- 20:07That's his home run. If it comes back it's in place. The left field ball line is the same way. The ball pattern is the same way also. Now the strip go in where it's exposed with the white shirt that is going to sweep the field in the fifth inning.
- 20:22We'll pull it down. Alright.
- 20:24Get him. Get him. Get him. Get him.
- 20:26Pull it down. Alright.
- 20:27Get him. Get him.
- 20:28Now the top is in play. Alright. If it goes behind we won't call it. Get up on the red jump.
- 20:36That's right. He can make a catch on it.
- 20:38Now also the dugout has got to go in. The same way as you. Gentlemen good luck for both of you.
- 20:47Thank you.
- 20:48I'm not. How do we get out of here?
- 20:49Thank you.
- 20:50Those are the words of Frank Uman. Have you ever wondered what goes on at home plate?
- 20:54Well that's Uman talking to Earl Weaver.
- 20:56Adam Sparky Anderson.
- 21:06The man in the middle of the game steps up 14 home runs from the year. 39 RBIs. The right hand is battered. As they say, a legend in his own time he is still playing. Frank Uman dusts out the plate to repeat the temperature is 86 degrees.
- 21:26Wind will be a factor. Out of the west at 23 miles an hour dusting to 33 and that means that it is blowing right towards that inviting upper deck in right field.
- 21:33facing each other in the 42nd All-Star game.
- 21:36Blue the left-hander who's won 17 and lost 3.
- 21:40Ready with his first pitch comes in with a fastball strike.
- 21:43Let it out.
- 21:44This is, of course, an American league down.
- 21:51And the crowd will be wide.
- 21:53As long as Blue and the American Lakers are doing well.
- 21:59Another fastball, ground ball to the shortstop.
- 22:01That's how Peperico has it and throws on the first base in Orham-Town.
- 22:05And there's 1-0.
- 22:09Blue 17 victories as the most of the pitchers had in an All-Star break.
- 22:13The previous high was 16 by Bobby Feller back in 1941
- 22:17and Palmer to twice-hacker.
- 22:19Jenny McLean now as the senator back in 1968.
- 22:23Now here is Hank Aaron and they're making an announcement right now
- 22:25that for the second consecutive year,
- 22:27Hank has received the most votes of you fans in the All-Star melody.
- 22:31And as a special travel this afternoon,
- 22:33received the Gillette Award of 65, well, as unprecedented, accomplishment.
- 22:37Here is Aaron, 660 lifetime home runs, 314 is average, 24 home runs this year,
- 22:4367 RBI.
- 22:47One up top of the first.
- 22:49Aaron, like Mays, and Toyota Fottle, are right-handed batters.
- 22:56Blue, disposed of what he made on the ground ball, comes in with a fastball.
- 22:59But the knees this time and it's like 1-0.
- 23:02And certainly he has thrown the ball right down the pike to both Mays and us.
- 23:06And you know, that looked like it was a very good pitch.
- 23:08It looked like it might have been on the outside quarter at the knees,
- 23:11which is tough for any batter to hit.
- 23:13Breaking pitch, 1-high hot.
- 23:14The Brooks Robinson, a third base gunner on the first, then there's the second half.
- 23:19Also, that first pitch to Aaron looked like a better fastball than Byte had thrown to Mays.
- 23:25The first two fastball he threw to Mays didn't look like he threw as hard as we had seen him throw earlier this season.
- 23:31But that one to Henry Ayer and was the good fastball.
- 23:35Well, here is Joe Chory leading the National League, 359, 14 home runs, 65 RBI.
- 23:41And those of you who have not been in the States or watched National League ball in some time,
- 23:46be advised that Joe weighs about 25 pounds less than the last time he's gone.
- 23:50The fastball gets him up around the letters again. He started out Mays, Aaron and Chory with fastballs all for called strikes.
- 23:57This is the first time the smashers of course have faced Byte Blue.
- 24:01Most of them haven't even seen him in the spring training.
- 24:03Another fastball fouled back to the screen.
- 24:08We've talked about Chory in the past where we've seen him throw as a good fastball hitter.
- 24:12In this line up for the National League, he may be the one player who gives Byte for the American League the most trouble.
- 24:20He doesn't try and pull the ball as good power to the opposite field in the right center.
- 24:24And with the wind blowing out in right field there, he could be a problem today.
- 24:28Here's strike counter Chory as Blue shakes off the side from Bill Frihan.
- 24:35Byte already in for another fastball. Hit off the test high in the short center field in comes Bobby Mercer out goes Rock, Chory,
- 24:42Chory there, Mercer there, Chory takes it, but the third out and Byte Blue has done quite a job.
- 24:46Aaron hits the road. He gets to the order.
- 24:49At the end of one half inning of play, the National League nothing, the American League coming to bat.
- 24:53Hi, this is Joe Garajil.
- 24:55Steve, your vacation plans include a lot of driving this year.
- 24:58I've got three suggestions that will help make your trip more enjoyable.
- 25:02One plan ahead to allow yourself a little more traveling time than usual.
- 25:07And three, do it in a Dodge, any brand new 1971 Dodge.
- 25:12For no matter which you choose, Monaco, Polara, Coronet, Charger, Challenger, or Dark,
- 25:19you'll find every Dodge offers a little more room and comfort than anything you're used to in its respective class.
- 25:26You get family sized room, ride and comfort at a modest price.
- 25:31Because of its new design concept, the Coronet wagon is the only one in its field
- 25:36that can carry a four by eight piece of family flat on the floor.
- 25:40Translated to vacation cargo, that's a lot of room for suitcases, beach balls and kids.
- 25:46So see your nearby Dodge boys. Let them show you what Dodge is all about.
- 25:50And on your trip, drive safely and have a happy return.
- 25:55From Tiger Stadium in Detroit, this is Sandy Kofax with Jim Simpson. For the last sitting, Vita Blue
- 26:01looks like he's looked every other time we've seen him.
- 26:04Unruffles at Good Stuff work rather easily. A very fine first sitting for the young left hander.
- 26:10Now for the National League, pitching will be Doc Ellis. As we talked about earlier, he's had six days rest.
- 26:17Sometimes that can hurt a pitcher, sometimes it's good, it depends on the individual.
- 26:21Doc has good stuff like Vita Blue, the good fastball and good breaking pitches too.
- 26:27And he's having a fine year with his 14 wins.
- 26:29Ellis will pitch first to Ron Caru, hitting a 283 and a fifth consecutive all-star game in five years in the Major League.
- 26:38Over the last 25 games, Ron had a four-star, has come on strong, hitting at a 4-22 face.
- 26:43Left hander batter from the Minnesota Gwyn.
- 26:45Whatever copy of San Francisco at first base, Glenn Becker of the Chicago Cups at second, but Halston of the New York Method short,
- 26:51Joe Troy of the Cardinals at third, will he start with the far left, will he maze with the Giants out in center,
- 26:56Hank Aaron of the Braves at right, Johnny Bench, Simpson's 90 behind the plate, and Ellis ready to face Ron Caru with Bobby Mercer of the
- 27:0380s on deck. Scallis last at the first inning right hander throws, and it's ball one to the left hander, Ron Caru.
- 27:15I don't believe checking back, Sandy, that Blue threw anything but strikes.
- 27:19There's ball two from Ellis, the Caru.
- 27:23You might think you're right, I don't remember any balls with two or three pitches taken, the rest were swung at, and I don't think you threw a ball in the inning.
- 27:33Going all the cops to Caru, let's see if he's swinging, he has ground ball on two hops at the second baseman's back end of Chicago,
- 27:38crosses all the way to McCuffey, and Caru is out.
- 27:41So I think you can almost throw away a little bit of the rules of baseball.
- 27:45You don't see too many take signals given in an all-star game.
- 27:49You've got hitters like you do in this lineup, you let them hit almost all the time, possibly in the last inning or two if it's a tie ball game,
- 27:58you might be willing to use a little bit more strategy, but this is a game for the fans, and you let the players do their job.
- 28:05Bobby Mercer from New York Yankees left-handed batter takes a strike at the knees, another.
- 28:09Mercer's second in the American League in hitting to Tony Aliva.
- 28:13Aliva with his 3-74 average home with a bum knees. Mercer, the Yankees starting in centerfield tonight.
- 28:1960-0 runs, 50-IVI's takes a high-fast ball, and it's one ball, one strike.
- 28:24Scordas were in the last of the first inning, Tiger Stadium, Detroit.
- 28:27The Sonners almost disappeared from the stadium. They are on standard time here in Detroit,
- 28:31and as we said, the lights have been on since 0-1-hour before the ball game.
- 28:36So, out of little quiet, now change and pull the way foul to the right down the right field line.
- 28:43The line's that portion of the right field stand still somewhat baged in sunlight.
- 28:46How does something on the Boston Red Sox yield on that?
- 28:51Looking around that National League infield, there have been no National League errors in the last eight games.
- 28:58And you can turn that around, but National League has not lost in the last eight games.
- 29:05Now, out of play again, Bench comes back thinking he may have a chance.
- 29:08This is a strange ballpark for him, but it is upstairs.
- 29:12Bobby Mercer, the only starter, not counting some of the pitchers, who has never played in an all-star game.
- 29:18Bobby says that everybody, because he came from Oklahoma, expected him to be another Mickey Matley.
- 29:24He said, I'm not this year, I'm trying to just go with the pitch instead of pulling everything,
- 29:28and my 3-41 average has given me a good start.
- 29:32Fastball outside at low, it is two balls, two strikes to Mercer.
- 29:36Mercer also says that he is always a fast starter.
- 29:39He cannot predict what he will do in the second half of this American League season.
- 29:45Gallards to the Pirates ready and throws fastball down the middle.
- 29:49We have the first pitch in the night.
- 29:53Mercer also like Mickey Matley, tied with the Yankees as a shortstop.
- 29:59Here is Carl Dostromsky, hitting a 273-11 home run, 49 RBI's, and Carl has been in the news for another reason.
- 30:06Billy Koneglioff, single-nose Carl Dostromsky the other day for a training of his brother Tony Koneglioff
- 30:13in California, the training of Ken Heldt.
- 30:15Dostromsky said, the NBC tonight before the game, I tried hard by 10 years in the American League,
- 30:20and in my mind, in my heart, I've never caused anyone to be traded or to be fired.
- 30:25There's a strike to Dostromsky on the outside corner.
- 30:29Carl quite upset about the story.
- 30:31He said, we at the Red Sox have simply buckled on play ball and try to win that penalty.
- 30:36One out, Mercer at first base, Dostromsky the left-hander, facing Doc Ellis.
- 30:41And for Dostromsky with great power, like to Mercer and Karoo, I'm sure that right field of course,
- 30:48upstairs at XM15, Deter playing the other, Mighty Inviting, found out a play.
- 30:53325 down that right field line.
- 30:55340 down the left field line here at Tigers Stadium.
- 30:58440 to deep center field with the power outage in left, 365 in right, 370 feet.
- 31:06Two strikes to Dostromsky.
- 31:08One out, Mercer being held on at first by Willie McCuff.
- 31:13Doc Ellis working his one, 14 and lost three.
- 31:22Dostromsky stands deep in the right spot, closed down, changed on the ball, high hopper,
- 31:27to the second baseman Becker who has to go to first.
- 31:29Dostromsky is out with Mercer and moves on now to second.
- 31:35And that brings up Plank Robbins, the most valuable player in the National League,
- 31:40the most valuable player in the American League.
- 31:43And in his last 21 at bats, with the ball to the ball to the ball, he's been in at a 476th flip.
- 31:51He's 10th All-Star game, he had six over the National League, and this is his fourth with the American League.
- 31:57And since 1961, Plank hasn't had a hit at All-Star play, 0 for 13, looking to drive it around.
- 32:04Takes loan in the dirt, blocked nicely by Johnny Vetsch. Mercer with a good lead off the second baseman.
- 32:13Throughout last of the first, no score, the 42nd All-Star game in right-handed Frank Robinson with all kinds of records.
- 32:21Triple crowd winner in 66th his first year in the American League.
- 32:24Ball up the middle, overcomes Dalson, a flick dealer from the net, throws on the first baseman as Robinson,
- 32:29and the American League goes down. No unsponyeth, no errors, and Bobby Mercer left at second base.
- 32:35At the end of one, the National League nothing, the American League nothing.
- 32:39Take a fleet of 80 air-conditioned Fort Worth yellow cabs, add 100 degrees of typical Texas summer heat,
- 32:46and you've got the kind of overheating trouble they used to knock out seven or eight cabs a day.
- 32:51But last summer, these cabs started using STP Keep Cool radiator treatment.
- 32:58The result? Not a single case of overheating or vapor lock.
- 33:03Try STP Keep Cool in your car this summer. It takes the heat off your engine.

- 33:15is hands-filed at good working conditions achieved by their union.
- 33:18They know too that to attain sound objectives for themselves in the country, they must work with clear heads and healthy bodies.
- 33:24The Retail Clerk's Union urges the use of America to avoid harmful drugs, and to register the voter next year's election.
- 33:30This message is from the Retail Clerk's International Association, Washington, D.C., to 006.
- 33:35We've lost 30 seconds for station identification.
- 33:38It's a gigantic store-wide summer clearance at Specters of Albany.
- 33:41Specters Metrolands fashion leader for men and boys has flashed prices on all summer clothing, summer suits, and sportswear.
- 33:48Specters has a tremendous election, one city block deep filled with the famous brands you know and trust.
- 33:54Remember, Specters can fit any man, any size, any budget. Get big savings now during the great summer clearance at Specters 233 Central Avenue Albany.
- 34:03Open every night till 9, Saturday till 6, WGY, Connected E, New York.
- 34:09Jim Simpson with Santa Cofax Fockets, Tigers Stadium top of the second, and what a confrontation we have now.
- 34:14Woody Stardale standing in left-handed batter, 30 home runs, 87 RBI's against By the Blue, whose first pitch is a breaking pitch that hit Woody Stardale.
- 34:23And Stardale becomes the first National League Baseballer.
- 34:26Chile, I think Stardale, if he's going to get hit by By the Blue, is lucky to get hit by the curveball.
- 34:32That's all to get right through you.
- 34:34It was interesting to see what By the Blue would do.
- 34:37Stardale doesn't really like the curveball from the left-hand pitchers that much, and By the Blue went with the curveball there.
- 34:43I was wondering if he would, because of the fact that he does have the good fastball tonight, but he didn't get it over and hit Welling.
- 34:51Woody McCubby, this time at the Giants first baseman, takes the fastball up high.
- 34:56That matters for a one with Stardale on his first base, no score, here in the second inning.
- 35:01Walter Alston, band-aids for the manager of the Dodgers, coaching his first base.
- 35:06Preston Gomez used to be a coach for the Dodgers, now managing San Diego's potteries, coaching his third.
- 35:11Lew back with the fastball, and does McCubby have a cut-off that strike one?
- 35:15Tim Sparkey Anderson was a coach under Preston Gomez at San Diego, the first year of San Diego.
- 35:21I'm sure that's why Sparkey has chosen Preston and played for Walton for many years in the Dodger organization.
- 35:28I think Sparkey said that the two most important men in baseball to him were Walton Preston.
- 35:34Another fastball, right up the knees, and McCubby takes another big swing.
- 35:39One ball, two strikes, Johnny Bench on deck.
- 35:43By the blue, never threw a pitch that wasn't swung out, or a called strike in the first inning.
- 35:48He started off the second inning, throwing a curve inside that hit Willie Stardale,
- 35:52and his next pitch was the high fastball to McCubby.
- 35:55But since that time, he's given him two dandy fastballs at the knees.
- 35:58Another fastball, he's called out on strike. First strike out for By the blue.
- 36:03Sure, that looked like the best fastball blue at the moment.
- 36:07He had just a little bit of extra on that, and when McCubby squawked her,
- 36:11I'm sure it was in a good spot. Sometimes it's a little difficult to tell from the announcing booth just where the pitch is.
- 36:17Johnny Bench hitting at 250, and that's much below John's average, but he does have those 18 home runs, 37 RBI.
- 36:25Most viable plan in the National League a year ago.
- 36:28An important cognizant, that big red machine, which has been rattling and rumbling along this year,
- 36:34not doing well at all, with a record of 41 wins and 51 losses.
- 36:38Blue is ready, fastball, hit high in the air, Bill Freehand comes back, first base side, looks up,
- 36:45and it falls about three rows deep in the lower deck. Strike one to Bench.
- 36:49Stardale hit by the pitch on her first and is called a game.
- 36:52Freehand at Detroit is starting because Ray Fossey of Cleveland is injured.
- 36:59Norm Cash at first base, because Brooke Pallabaldamore is injured.
- 37:05Mercer has made it into the outfield and has gone to center because Antonio Leibos is injured.
- 37:14One strike to Johnny Bench with Glenn Becker to the Cubs on deck.
- 37:20Blue ready, throws a fastball, hit high and hit deep. Back goes Mercer looking up, over 400 feet away.
- 37:28Home run, Johnny Bench's second and all-star play and the nationally sixth to lead, two-nothin'.
- 37:35Two and that ball was really hit a long way to the opposite field.
- 37:39The numbers on the fence are 415 feet. That was in right-center field in the upper deck.
- 37:46And I knew Bench was strong, but I didn't know he was that strong.
- 37:49Johnny Bench on his first all-star game, played in Washington a couple of years ago,
- 37:55and a home run the first time up, and then later hit a single and a second time up,
- 37:59continues to be a big man from the National League.
- 38:02By the blue, who on his last appearance went 11 innings and struck out 17 California angels,
- 38:09has given up a mammoth to run blast to Johnny Bench.
- 38:13To nothing, and here's Glenn Becker, who went out on the top of the second.
- 38:16Becker right-handed hitter takes a fastball for the Needs, like one.
- 38:20To that pitch by blue was up and out over the plate. It looked like it might have been on the outside part of the plate to Bench.
- 38:26And I think when you get the ball up, that's a dangerous spot.
- 38:29So if you're going to throw the high fastball, you'd like to have it in on the hitter a little bit.
- 38:32It's a lot tougher to handle.
- 38:34Back with a breaking pitch. Drill the left field.
- 38:37Over goes Mercer, and left-center field near the warning track, 400 feet away, and halves it in.
- 38:43Ball the second out.
- 38:45Now, butthelveson, no home runs on the year 268, but in talking to Sparky Anderson, if it matter anybody in the National League,
- 38:56they will say this is Mr. Slickfield. Butthelveson, but if that, he now he edged out Chicago's Don Kessinger,
- 39:03who was on the squad for the shortstop position.
- 39:07To nothing, the National League on Bench's home run.
- 39:10We're on the top of the second attacker state in Detroit.
- 39:13Fastball, another strike. This time to help. We were seeing Vita Blue for the first time.
- 39:18Darkeller's warm-up jacket on, swinging a couple of bats on deck.
- 39:24The American League crowd attacker stayed in, a little quiet after that last five-bench foul back on the fastball by Helpson,
- 39:31and he's quickly down to blue 0-2.
- 39:34The American League has walked eight in a row, 12 of the last 13, close to one-to-one tie in 1961.
- 39:47They're trying to reverse that trend, but the National League is broken on top of that foul.
- 39:52Another fastball fouled away by the blue God, what he made,
- 39:56is a two-point attack here, and Joe Choi in the first inning, but then it began to get to him.
- 40:04What he started with, hit and Bench delivered, but that manoplast into the second back, in right center field.
- 40:12Two strikes through Helpson, who was a switch-hitter batting right-handed,
- 40:18and there's one of a few breaking pitches we've seen from Vita Blue,
- 40:21thrown in the dirt, one ball to strike.
- 40:26Blue told Sandy before the game he might go exclusively fastball,
- 40:30he saw one of them blast to the high and deep.
- 40:33Comes back with a fastball this time, hits the right field, out there's Frank Robinson,
- 40:38very short right field, but Robinson scarcely three-and-a-feet away, and has it for the third out,
- 40:42but two runs scored on Johnny Bench's home run, the only hit, no errors, none left.
- 40:47We move to the last of the second, the national league too, the American league, nothing.
- 40:57Excuse me sir, are you gay-lurged, Perry?
- 41:00What do you think I'm doing out here on the mound? What are you doing out here?
- 41:03There's a ball game going on.
- 41:05Yeah, and your pitching is just great, not here. Take this pack of Gillette Plattenham-Plus plays.
- 41:09Oh yeah, I use Plattenham-Plus, real smooth shade.
- 41:12Go to the ball, Perry!
- 41:14Beauty! Now raise your right hand and repeat after me. Hi, Gaylord Perry.
- 41:18Hey, I got a ball game to pitch.
- 41:20Come on, Gaylord. Have switched to Gillette Plattenham-Plus plays.
- 41:23Have switched to Gillette Plattenham-Plus plays.
- 41:25Because they shave me closer and with more comfort.
- 41:28Right, they shave smoother, and smoothness is important in shaving, just like in pitching.
- 41:33Excuse me. Now look what you made me do.
- 41:37Gillette Plattenham-Plus, double edge or injector, both with Plattenham smooth edges for smoother shades.
- 41:43I guess your curve just wasn't smooth enough.
- 41:46Get off of my mound.
- 41:53From Tiger Stadium in Detroit, this is Sandy Kofax with Jim Simpson at your 40 seconds annual All-Star game.
- 42:00The blue mate, the one bad fish, looked in that and he got the fastball up and out away from Bench.
- 42:05Bench went with it. I don't know if he really went with it or he was throwing so hard he was swinging behind it.
- 42:10But he hit it very hard and gives the National League a two run lead.
- 42:14Well, here's Norm Cash, as you perhaps have judged by it was the crowd.
- 42:19As we said, the blue foul was voted their first baseman by the fans.
- 42:23The players voted Norm Cash.
- 42:26And then when foul couldn't play, Earl Weaver, manager of the American League All-Stars, did not immediately pick Cash.
- 42:32Only later, after someone else was into the pick norm, who fouls off the first pitch from Doc Ellis like one.
- 42:38Good or nothing, the National League has one hit, but it's a two run blast by Johnny Bench.
- 42:43The American League has one hit, a single up the middle by Bobby Mercer.
- 42:46Cash, a left handed hitter, 20 home runs tied with Bill Mouson for the American League lead.
- 42:52Slow change up at the knees.
- 42:54The late foul by Frank Humard and the Tiger fans didn't like it.
- 42:58It's two strikes to their favorite Norm Cash.
- 43:01Cash hitting a 293 on the year, 49 RBI.
- 43:04Dollar's ready back with a fast ball and strikes out Cash on a low list.
- 43:08I think in defense of Earl Weaver in that situation of not picking Cash immediately,
- 43:13Weaver said that he had three or four different players who could play first base.
- 43:17He didn't feel like he needed a second first baseman, but Norm's having such a good year.
- 43:22I guess everybody felt it was a bad flight to him.
- 43:25Brooks Robinson hitting a 294, 10 home runs, 54 RBI's in need.
- 43:29I remind you about last year's World Series.
- 43:32It's the first pitch under Toys Club.
- 43:34Halston in the hole makes a long throw and gets Robinson's beautiful play by Halston.
- 43:40And there's that slick feeling that the National Lakers were talking about.
- 43:43Brooks Robinson doesn't have great speed to start with,
- 43:46but Halston made a very fun play on it.
- 43:49It's awfully difficult to go into the hole and come up throwing, but he did.
- 43:52He did it with a strong and a very accurate throw,
- 43:55which enables Willie McCovey to give it the big stretch.
- 43:58Willie being about six foot five can do that, and they got Brooks on a fine play.
- 44:03Bill Freehand, the Detroit catcher in the lineup.
- 44:07Because of the fact that we said Ray Fawcett of Cleveland is not injured.
- 44:12Two outs, last of a second to nothing, the National League fast ball from Ellis, he is outside.
- 44:21Freehand, this is his seventh consecutive game, his sixth consecutive start, starting only because Fawcett is not here.
- 44:30From left to right on the outfield, Stardew and left maze and center, Aaron and Wright.
- 44:35Around the infield, McCovey, Beckett, Halston and Torrey, bench behind the plate and Doc Ellis
- 44:39ready to throw on a one and old count with two outs to fill Freehand and gets a strike call.
- 44:48Hardly a crowd in the sky, and as of yesterday when we arrived in Detroit, there was word that we were going to have thunderstorms.
- 44:55They changed their mind today. Freehand holds one deep and left, Stardew goes back, and is at the wall and halts it in for the third outs.
- 45:04Three hundred and seventy feet away for the American League.
- 45:07The run hits the errors, unlawfully.
- 45:09Now gone two full innings, and now it's only two, the American League, nothing.
- 45:16The Retail Clerks International Association has in its ranks many thousands of teenage store workers who through their union enjoy good working conditions.
- 45:24In order to attain sound objectives, both for themselves and the country, they need clear heads and healthy bodies.
- 45:30The Retail Clerks Union urges the youth of America to avoid harmful drug habits, and they register to vote so that they can make vital contributions to next year's election.
- 45:39This message from the Retail Clerks International Association, Washington, D.C. 2006.
- 45:45That is blue. Back for his third and final town on the mound, warms up now with Don Dupert of Baltimore.
- 45:53In order for people to make Blist-Tick, the largest selling lip ointment, also make an excellent medicated lip balm.
- 45:59It's Blist-Tick, and for Chaps dried out lips, there's really nothing like it.
- 46:04That's because Blist-Tick has a sunscreen, three ingredients to protect against infection, and two that make lips soft and smooth.
- 46:11We all get chapped lips, so to get your family the balm that heals and protects them, Blist-Tick, the medicated balm for all the lips in your family.
- 46:22Tim, we've got a change for the National League right now. The manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates, Danny Murtaugh, is coaching at First Base.
- 46:29I don't know if Danny's going to coach very long. There's been some worry about his health, so he may just be out there for one inning just to make his appearance at the All-Star Game.
- 46:38It looks like in the National League, both men, we've got a little action starting, and it looks like the fine right-hander from the San Francisco Giants won Maryshaw.
- 46:48What an adjective to use in discussing one, Danny Pine. What a fine right-hander he is with all different kinds of pitches.
- 46:56You can talk about that when he comes out, but in the meantime, the National League shuttered Doc Ellis standing in the face of White A Blue,
- 47:03and he starts him with a high-fastball outside at ball one. On deck, here's what he made.
- 47:09As you know, in All-Star Games, those who have voted to start must play at least three innings.
- 47:14The pitchers cannot go longer than three innings unless they go to extra innings.
- 47:17Fastball, and it was by Doc before he began to swing the bat.
- 47:22Ellis' lone mistake. Well, he made a mistake in hitting when he started to lead off the second with a curveball on the first pitch,
- 47:29but a high-fastball out over the plate that Johnny Betts drilled for a long home run.
- 47:33Breaking pitch outside. Two balls, one strike to Ellis.
- 47:43This is the last for White A Blue, and Jim Palmer of Baltimore is warming up.
- 47:49Ellis tries to punt his way on and valves it off, two and two.
- 47:54So on the fourth inning, Jim Palmer of Baltimore will be pitching for the American League at Juan Mirichel
- 48:00at the San Francisco Giants for the National League.
- 48:06There's a change right then what Sparky Edison felt he was going to do.
- 48:09He was going to come back with Carlton to replace Ellis, but there's Mirichel warming up.
- 48:15Blue throws the bat ball and strikes out Ellis' swing.
- 48:19To a fake pass of Ellis, Sparky looks down at his roster of pitchers and realizes Carlton's his only left hander.
- 48:25He might want to save Steve for a situation late in the ballgame.
- 48:28In this ballpark, as we said, good for the left-hand hitters.
- 48:32When you've only got one left-hand pitcher, it's still tough to use them up this early in the ballgame.
- 48:37Well, he made the ground at the upper ratio at Shrunkstop, steps in for a second time at bat.
- 48:42Fly the open stance, deep in the box, right-handed hitter wearing the familiar number 24.
- 48:49And up in 1951 with the Giants down there, there's a change-up breaking that chips in.
- 48:54Right-center field Mercer runs over and now it is taken almost in front of him by Frank Robinson.
- 49:00That ball, I believe, Sandy, by the wind, kept trailing away from Mercer and toward Frank Robinson.
- 49:06See, I think Mercer really got through by the wind. It looked like he thought he had the ball and was not going to have to go any further.
- 49:13Two or three fans. He almost let it get away from him just by trailing him.
- 49:19But it looks like it's going so hard across that this could happen and pop flies could be trouble today.
- 49:25But it did come right to Frank Robinson, which made it a little easier.
- 49:28And Karen, who's run to the Brooks Robinson, a third base stands in.
- 49:32Right-handed batter takes the ball outside.
- 49:35Started to save Earl Weaver's plans are Jim Palmer for the fourth and fifth innings.
- 49:40And then perhaps Mike Crayard for six and seven, another Baltimore pitcher, and then Mickey Loewage,
- 49:45of the Tigers in the eighth and ninth innings. Blue ready, strike.
- 49:50What a no wonder, Aaron. Whereas Parkie had said that he would go with Colin, and as Sandy explained,
- 49:56he's the only left-hander he's got, but also gave us no plans beyond that.
- 50:00To nothing, national league top of the third inning. Bider Blue, two outs in the third.
- 50:07Perhaps pitching to his last batter, he hopes it is. And there's all-star games.
- 50:11Frank Humphries, who played on fire, called Kyle, a piece of yellow paper.
- 50:15Got him into the hitter's circle.
- 50:19And now another piece of paper's coming down to the first base, but they let that one get by.
- 50:23And boy, there's a blazing fastball that Aaron really got a round on, but Bider Blue got a pass.
- 50:28Strike two, one ball, two strikes. Blue has a very slow, easy-to-ceasing motion.
- 50:33But when he lets that ball go, it is something else again.
- 50:38A rising fastball. Another one, hit high and deep.
- 50:43Mike Robinson goes back 370 feet away, looks up, it's in the upper deck.
- 50:47And it's three to nothing. And Hank Aaron.
- 50:52He was at no extra basis until right now, and his all-star career against the home run to make it three to nothing.
- 50:59And Bider Blue has been ducked up with three runs, two of them, home run.
- 51:04It's a bit of a game that looks like the high outside fastball, but I didn't say, hey, hit that one that hard.
- 51:11I think that 30 mile-hour wind had a lot to do with that one.
- 51:14It is very high, and I think the wind carried its whole good portion of the way into those seats.
- 51:21So, Troy steps in, and as it turned out, Aaron was not the last batter that Bider Blue had to face in this 40-second all-star game.
- 51:29Bider Blue being roughed up fastball, and he's good right by a story he was swinging strike one.
- 51:35Mike, you mark behind the plate. Fire the National League at first,
- 51:39so Donald with the American League at second, Harvey with the National League at third,
- 51:42Colorsy with the National League in right field, a Red-Elec field, and Ben Kinger with the American League in right field.
- 51:47One strike, and there's a good-looking breaking bit. Strike.
- 51:51Freehand dug it out of the dirt, but it was across the knees of Troy who stepped out and looked back at you, Mark.
- 51:57Cash at first, Gerard's second, I appreciate your short book, Robinson.
- 52:00Third, Yostemski, left, Mercer in center, Frank Robinson in right.
- 52:03Freehand the catcher, and Bider Blue working with a two-strike, counts towards the breaking bit this time. Two lows.
- 52:11One Mercer, continues to warm up, down the right field line, as Jim Palmer Baltimore does down the left.
- 52:20And this American League crowd attacker stadium, looking on at the power of the National League.
- 52:25Another breaking bit, and he strikes out Troy, but one run. On the home run by Hank Aaron, one hit, no errors, none left.
- 52:33We go to the last of the third, Bider Blue is all through, but it's three to nothing, the National League.
- 52:40At the All-Star game, you can be sure you're watching the best performers in baseball.
- 52:44He's excelling at what he does best. Of course, in baseball and other sports, if you fully great all-around performance, stand out.
- 52:50Guys, you do everything well. Well, the same thing holds true for gasoline performance.
- 52:55It's great all-around performance that you really look for. And some gasoline talk about quick starts, some talk about good mileage, some promise you cleansing action.
- 53:03But at Phillips 66, we've got all-around performance gasoline that give you everything you need for the road. We call them free-for-the-money performance gasoline,
- 53:11because they give you quick starts, good mileage, and the cleansing action. Whether you're talking baseball or gasoline,
- 53:17truly great performance means the same thing, the ability to do everything well.
- 53:22Drive it here near a Phillips 66 station and ask for the free-for-the-money gasoline.
- 53:27You'll see what we mean when we say, at Phillips 66, its performance. Let's count.
- 53:40The final inning for Dark Ellis. He will face Luis Aperichio, the 10th hitter, it looks to be Reggie Jackson,
- 53:47the home run hitter from the Oakland A's, and then again, Rod Caru.
- 53:53Three to nothing. Nash and Ligard with McCuffie at first, Beckard at second, Halton at short, Troy at third,
- 53:59Darjul and left, Mays and center, Aaron and Wright, and Johnny Bent catching Dark Ellis, who could be the winning pitcher.
- 54:06But if you talk to people before this ball game, most are predicting something like a 12-11 finish.
- 54:13A lot of home runs were so out of here with 30-mph wins. Fastball to Yosemski, who is sure to be really,
- 54:19a reviver to Aperichio, is sure to be really being ripped by the disgusting wind as Reggie Jackson waits on deck.
- 54:29Dallas ready again. Side on this time, strikes. It's called, it's one ball, one strike to Aperichio.
- 54:38Aperichio and quite a hitting chair, hitting over 400 in his last 14 games, but that only brings him up to 206 for the season.
- 54:46Dallas went out of play, one ball, two strikes. This is Louis, 10th all-star game, is 8th.
- 54:54This is his 26th time at bat. Now he only has one all-star base hit.
- 55:02Ellis ready. Grows the fastball, but he's got number two. Mays hit up the middle,
- 55:07fielded by Mays on one knee in short center field.
- 55:13And that will bring up Reggie Jackson, who can make this ball game close in quite a hurry.
- 55:19Reggie hitting a 272, 17-home run, 41 RBI's, and I'm sure you'll recall a couple of years ago,
- 55:25when Jackson, Howard, and Killibrew in the American League were all in that home run race.
- 55:31One ultimately by Killibrew, Howard, and Jackson, third.
- 55:38Killibrew's is the situation of the ball game where it tests the pitcher's ability to try and make the hitter hit the ball on the ground.
- 55:45Jackson left-handed batter takes the strike at the knees from Doc Ellis.
- 55:50Ellis, the National League's leading winner, 14 victories.
- 55:54White-A-Blue, who had 17, before the all-star break, an all-time high in Major League history,
- 56:00touched up for two home runs, one of them win-blown, one of them simply poleaxed, and a three-run lead.
- 56:07Back, high inside-out of play by Reggie Jackson, it's two strikes.
- 56:12The left-handed hitting outfielders, one of them ready products of Arizona State.
- 56:20From the last of the third, it's three to nothing, the National League, with the resap ratio perched at first base.
- 56:27None out, Karoo on deck, and Ellis, the right-hander, looking in, gray uniform, gold cap,
- 56:35throws, and it's out of play again.
- 56:39Johnny Bench, the catcher, quite concerned about his left wrist, it was sore, but the X-rated, not a fracture, not a break,
- 56:45and Bench is behind the plate, and as the first home run of the ball game, it came with a man off,
- 56:55which should make his left wrist feel a lot better.
- 57:00Ellis has a two-strike count on Jackson, I appreciate he leads off at first, here's the pitch, and it's outside.
- 57:06One ball, two strikes for Jackson.
- 57:08Ellis is doing a fine job, seems to be fighting his control just a little bit.
- 57:12The last three pitches have been up, and in this situation, with the runner-on, the home run here, the win-blowing out,
- 57:18you know Ellis would like to get the breaking ball down, he's got it up a little bit.
- 57:23Low and dry, deep right field, it's free to fill, nobody even turns to look, home run.
- 57:30Jackson just now, round third base, and Sandy, I recall again what you were saying about
- 57:46Doc Ellis struggling, and the ball was getting up to Jim right there, it looked like Doc got the breaking ball up,
- 57:53just a little bit to Reggie Jackson, and I mean he hit it hard, I don't know what I've seen a ball hit any harder
- 57:59or as hard as that with it, that would have gone out at the airport.
- 58:03It may be at the airport, who knows.
- 58:07Listen to this round up, it is now three to two, the American league has fought back, here's Rod Giroux,
- 58:17who bounced to Beckett at second base, to lead off the first inning, takes a strike on a fastball by Doc Ellis,
- 58:22and in this, a hitters ballpark, Tigers stadium Detroit, and with the win gusting more than 30 miles an hour toward right field,
- 58:29we have seen three home runs all through right center or right field.
- 58:33Back up high with the pitch, it's one ball, one strike to Giroux, who has one home run this year.
- 58:41I think probably the control trouble is due to too much rest, I'm sure, Doc Ellis normally going along all year with three days rest
- 58:49or four days rest, it's down at six, and that's what it affects.
- 58:52Outside two and one to Giroux, Bobby Mercer, another left-handed swinger on deck, none are out.
- 58:58Luis Apericio let off with a single up the middle, only his first hit in many years in all-star play, his second in his career,
- 59:06and with a one ball, two strikes, counts Jackson, drilled one upstairs.
- 59:10Outside and high again, and Johnny Vintz stands up and throws it back to Ellis,
- 59:15Ellis stares in at Eumann, thought he might have had the pitch.
- 59:22Three and one, and this time is the first time
- 59:26that we've gone this high to anybody, and that's the first one, four, four.
- 59:31Ellis hasn't gotten anybody out here in the third and eighth.
- 59:37Reggie Jackson has just hit the ninth pinched home run in an all-star game, and the last one was nine years ago by Pete Reynolds,
- 59:44only a Boston in Washington who may be listening in his home down in Pasadena, Texas, out of Houston right now.
- 59:50Bobby Mercer with a single, but with 16 home runs on the year, steps in, left-handed batter against Scott Ellis.
- 59:57Marichael continues to warm up in the National League bullpen, Palmer taking it easy in the American League bullpen,
- 1:00:03staring in, throwing now and then.
- 1:00:06Ellis ready, throws high with the fast ball, it's ball one, and as Sandy pointed out, those pitches are up high,
- 1:00:14and if a power hitter such as Mercer and Yoslensky-Robinson and Cash to follow, that can be trouble.
- 1:00:20National League three, American League two, where Jeph from the last was a third and we've already had three home runs.
- 1:00:25Ellis back with a change-up, which is low in the dirt.
- 1:00:28Mercer, tells Crude on his first base, don't advance.
- 1:00:32McCovey, the giant, is holding on there, and Johnny Bench drops out to talk to Dr. Ellis.
- 1:00:37I'm sure that Bench is going out there now, talk to Dr. and tell him, pick me up, look at my target,
- 1:00:44because John's been trying to tell him that from behind the plate, this whole inning,
- 1:00:48but when you're having troubles out there in the mound, it's not always that easy to throw the ball where you want to,
- 1:00:53or to do with it as you would like.
- 1:00:56Sometimes that plate looks like it's moving around, you'd like to catch it or put a foot out and step on it and keep it in place.
- 1:01:02Garoo had a 3-1 chop before he walked, and now it's quickly 2-0 to Bobby Mercer.
- 1:01:07Let's see if he's swinging on 2-0, he is.
- 1:01:09Opted up, infield groans, and who's going to get a Troyer Kessinger?
- 1:01:14Troy all the way over near first base, all the way from third base.
- 1:01:18And there's that wind again, it kept blowing it away from Joe, Troy, and Don, or rather, Helsing, and Troy made the catch.
- 1:01:26Looks like Joe started after that one, and I don't think there's anybody in the infield bigger than he is, he kept going.
- 1:01:33And then our home runs got over to McCarney at first.
- 1:01:36Kyle Desensky.
- 1:01:40From American Lake Sand Snow, kept foot the American lake ahead with one swinging up big bats,
- 1:01:46and already has gone up to 11 home runs this year.
- 1:01:49That's down to deep in the box.
- 1:01:51And the wind is really picking up now, it seems like it's almost blowing, it's gale force, it's blowing in so hard from left field, that ball started out to left,
- 1:01:58it looked like Stardale was going to catch the ball, how's it going?
- 1:02:03It's going to be a little bit more difficult, but it's going to be a little bit more difficult.
- 1:02:09And then the wind is going to get a little bit more difficult, and it's going to be a little bit more difficult.
- 1:02:15And then left field, that ball started out to left, it looked like Stardale was going to catch the ball, Halton went back on it,
- 1:02:22and Halton had to come running in just to catch the ball.
- 1:02:27Frank Humon has called out Earl Weber and has now called out a ball boy from Detroit.
- 1:02:35And I don't know whether Frank has simply run out of baseballs or is running out or what.
- 1:02:40He's called out Weber and then a Detroit ball boy came out, and Humon told him something, and the boy is putted back into the American League, which is the Detroit Tigers dugout.
- 1:02:48Ralph Carouse at first, after that walk, which followed Apporicio Shingle and Jackson's home run, but then Mercer and Yosemski had popped out against Doc Ellis.
- 1:02:58Robinson stands in and takes a big shot at a high pass ball, strike one.
- 1:03:02Tim, I have a feeling that that might have been the ball that Reggie Jackson hit out, that the Empire gave to that young man to give to Reggie.
- 1:03:10The ball hit a transformer on the light salad and bounced back out of the field. I didn't follow its progress back, but it looked like you were giving the bat boy a ball.
- 1:03:22The pass ball is inside, one ball, one strike, so Frank Robinson.
- 1:03:31Robinson is now over 14 since 1961 in all-star play. That goes back five years into his national league career.
- 1:03:43One ball, one strike, there goes the runner. Robinson swinging in fouls and away.
- 1:03:47Caru is off and running. One ball, two strikes, three to two. The National League, written last for the third, as Caru retreats to first base.
- 1:03:58Butter, I could rock Caru has five years in the American League, five years at all-star starters.
- 1:04:05And when he was piling up all his old 30 this year, he was around the 200 mark, entered the game at 283. He has really been on a sale recently.
- 1:04:14Ellis pitching his last inning. Ready, fires, and there's a drive, deep white field, back goes Hank Allen, looks at the score, and a clean American League.
- 1:04:36Frank Robinson, over 14 since 1961, two on home run, the second two on home run, a fifth, a third inning, and it's four to three.
- 1:04:46The American League and Sandrood, they can port back, it was no astute observation, just an observation when we said the wind is blowing and it's going to be a factor in this.
- 1:04:56Now he hit his ballpark and it's certainly been that. Here's Gordon Cash, who struck out on three pitches, fishing for a low breaking pitch back in the second inning.
- 1:05:07Another left-hander with great time. Allen's ready and throws.
- 1:05:16Here mark behind the plate says it is a ball, Johnny Bench is pointing into the dugout.
- 1:05:24Now he is looking down to the third base umpire, Bench is discussing it, saying that it should have been a strike at third base, Doug Harvey the National League. There's nothing.
- 1:05:39This one is a strike called, the most home run to the North Star Games, took place here just 20 years ago, six, that's a strike, and again three years later, it's treatment.
- 1:05:49Now we've had four already and we're not through the third inning. Allen's ready, back with a changeup, it is low on inside, two balls, one strike at arm cash.
- 1:05:57Clearing three to nothing on home runs by Johnny Bench and Aaron, the American League started the third on a single by Aperishio, two on over by Reggie Jackson, a mammoth blast upstairs.
- 1:06:07Now he walks, and after most of his time he pops out, Robinson hit his home run. There is strike two at arm cash, two balls, two strikes.
- 1:06:19Tyler Vance really wants their favorite norm, he was tied with Bill Meltem of Chicago with the most home runs in the American League 20 to unload here.
- 1:06:29He's a great fan, he beats the foul down the first base line. Sure, I know a lot of people might wonder why a manager wouldn't take a pitcher out in a situation like this.
- 1:06:39Allen's having a little bit of trouble not now, in fact, if there's nobody on it. Usually in an all-star game, the manager's a little less a pitcher, finish the inning.
- 1:06:46It's rare to see a pitcher come out during the inning. I don't remember seeing it happen very often. I think the managers believe if they're good enough to be picked for the all-star team, they're good enough to get out of trouble.
- 1:06:56There's a call strike three on a breaking pitch to norm cash, he's struck out for the second time. But, four-one score on three-base hits, two of those home runs.
- 1:07:07No errors, and nobody left. At the end of three, the American League four, the National League three. Mary Ann, this is my dad.
- 1:07:15Nice to meet you, mister.
- 1:07:17Go meet Count.
- 1:07:18My, what a treat you have.
- 1:07:21All the best of good.
- 1:07:22And your hair. It's quite different.
- 1:07:25I keep telling him the wethead's dead, but he won't try Joe Head to Iowa.
- 1:07:29Oh, you should. I love how his hair was collectible.
- 1:07:33You don't?
- 1:07:34You see me? But so soft and casual. Really, our little child looking, I bet you'll have girls dying for days.
- 1:07:40Dying? Young lady, I like to vey you think.

- 1:08:45Hello again from Tiger Stadium in the Trout, Jim Simpson with Sandy Co.
- 1:08:51Fact 4-3, the American League leads. As we go to the top of the fourth inning, a new picture for the American League, Jim Palmer.
- 1:08:56Right-hander in his first pitch is the called striker, Willie Stardew, who started the two run-up rising by the National League in the second,
- 1:09:03by being hit on the first pitch from by the blue, a curve ball.
- 1:09:06Palmer started last year's all-star game and fifth three-storey inning.
- 1:09:11Ready again for another fastball, quick in the midst by the left-handed Stardew.
- 1:09:14Palmer, a right-hander, this year, has had ten complete ball games.
- 1:09:20He's won 11 and lost four, and has run out on that run average of 5-2.58.
- 1:09:26Stahl, a right-hander, had a history of all that arm trouble after his great 1966 season.
- 1:09:33He's come back strong the last couple of years. Another fastball that's as high an outside.
- 1:09:38Willie Stardew with 30 home runs and 87 RBIs this year.
- 1:09:42Here we've talked a lot about some of the other pitches who can throw hard, but here's another one. Jim Palmer's got a great fastball.
- 1:09:49Foul siphon.
- 1:09:53Brianna is throwing back saying it wasn't, throwing down the first base.
- 1:09:58Stardew is walking away, he did not foul siphon.
- 1:10:01He is walking away in disbelief.
- 1:10:04Freehand, north.
- 1:10:06I call it a foul siphon because Stardew made no move, but Freehand retreated to the screen,
- 1:10:12and Frutter's teammate Norm cashed first base, and Stardew has struck out.
- 1:10:17I'm not sure, but I thought Frank Eumann gazed the foul siphon on that.
- 1:10:22I'm probably wrong, I'm sure he didn't.
- 1:10:26But it looked like Stardew was confused on it.
- 1:10:32If he didn't foul siphon, then I'm sure he would have run to first.
- 1:10:37I would have to think that it probably was a foul siphon.
- 1:10:42At any event he is down, and here's McCuffie who was called out looking at a fastball in the second inning.
- 1:10:49McCuffie takes outside ball one.
- 1:10:52McCuffie is out of the box, and Eumann had walked over to the other side of the place.
- 1:10:59McCuffie had actually dropped the bat.
- 1:11:04At a national three-run, two-hit, two-hours for the American four-runs on four hits to the north.
- 1:11:09Fastball, big, cut by McCuffie, and he missed it.
- 1:11:12It's a foul siphon.
- 1:11:14At a national three-run, two-hit, two-hours for the American four-runs on four hits to the north.
- 1:11:22It's one ball, one strike.
- 1:11:26More than 52,000 looking on here in Tiger State in Detroit.
- 1:11:31Had more than 700 radio stations throughout the world listening to us, and we welcome you.
- 1:11:35There's another big cut by McCuffie's foul siphon.
- 1:11:38Three-hand hold on to it. One ball, two strikes.
- 1:11:41Palmer throwing hard, Sandy, throwing very hard, and really McCuffie has not been playing regularly lately,
- 1:11:47and looks like it's chilling a little bit on him.
- 1:11:50Palmer is throwing very hard, and really also looks like he's just a little late with his swing.
- 1:11:55Another fastball. This is inside. McCuffie raises up the arms and backs away from the inside pitch.
- 1:12:00This is what a six-all star game is for a start.
- 1:12:08That's two-home runs a couple of years ago, and not too many men have done that.
- 1:12:12This change-up goes in the dirt by the plate and bounces back to the screen.
- 1:12:16Arcee Vaughn in 1941, Ted Williams, and Al Rosen in 54.
- 1:12:27And the gentleman at the plate right now, Willie McCuffie.
- 1:12:31That ball, two hops, short hop by Caru, waits for Cass to get to the first base, and throws out McCuffie.
- 1:12:40That ball was hit fairly hard by McCuffie, but playing him to pull as much as they were was not quite a shift.
- 1:12:47They had Apparicio guarding the middle, but Caru way over into the hole.
- 1:12:52In a normal infield alignment, that might have had a chance to go through,
- 1:12:55but playing McCuffie to pull that much, it was right to Caru.
- 1:12:59And there's a little who-and-off in the crowd remembering that mammoth homerun that he hit.
- 1:13:03We thought that was one of the longest that we have seen in some time, but I want to tell you,
- 1:13:08the one hit by Reggie Jackson when he used them farther.
- 1:13:12And he gets a breaking pitch to start him off and takes a big swing strike once.
- 1:13:16I think those big-straw hitters, if they see the high-breaking ball like that, they have a good swing.
- 1:13:22They don't usually hit it with that great big swing, but they get a good cut at it.
- 1:13:28And they're not going to be able to hit it with a fastball.
- 1:13:30Last is Fort Robinson, the third base, gobbling it up, playing on the first-season.
- 1:13:34Now back to you, cleaner. Does it again.
- 1:13:37Now, arms hipsters on a great play by Fort Robinson.
- 1:13:40We go to the last of the fours. The American League Four, the National League Three.
- 1:13:44When I say made in Detroit, what do you think of?
- 1:13:46Automotive.
- 1:13:47What car companies can you think of?
- 1:13:49GM, Christ of the Fourth.
- 1:13:52When I say engineering, which of those companies do you think of?
- 1:13:55The first company came up with the first fluid drive.
- 1:13:58I'm not sure. I'm tempted to say Christ of the Fourth.
- 1:14:01Right. You know what company first offered power steering?
- 1:14:03Christ of the Fourth.
- 1:14:05Now, do you know the first company to use torsion bar suspension in all of its cars?
- 1:14:10Also Christ of the Fourth. I'm picking up a pattern here.
- 1:14:13What I'm trying to prove with your brewing formula is, of course, that when I say engineering now, which one of those car companies do you think of?
- 1:14:22Now I would say Christ, which is actually what most people think of.
- 1:14:26You know, your body.
- 1:14:28Now, when I think of Chrysler, it's the engineering that I think of.
- 1:14:33When you mentioned Chrysler, people think of extra care and engineering, extra value, extra worth.
- 1:14:39The 1971 cars of a Chrysler Corporation, Dodge, Plymouth and Chrysler.
- 1:14:46Society co-facts with Jim Simpson from Tiger Stadium in Detroit.
- 1:14:51The end of three and a half innings for the National League.
- 1:14:54Three runs, two hits and no errors.
- 1:14:56The American League, four runs, four hits and no errors.
- 1:15:00Wouldn't it always seem to happen the seller who makes a good play is the first hitter?
- 1:15:04We start the inning with Brooks Robinson and Johnny Bench talking to him a little bit.
- 1:15:09You think John would have learned something last year in the World Series?
- 1:15:12Not to hit it to Brooks.
- 1:15:13I said to those reds went away in disbelief.
- 1:15:15So I guess for Johnny, this thing, you do that all the time?
- 1:15:18Juan Marichael is one 10-a-mort five that comes the second National League pitcher.
- 1:15:22At a right field now, with Buddha Clementi replaces Hank Aaron, Clementi from the park.
- 1:15:27In center field, Willie Mays is out.
- 1:15:28Willie Davis of the Dodgers is in his center.
- 1:15:31Willie McCuvey is down to first base and Lee May of Clementi is at first base.
- 1:15:35But as May Beckett-Helston, Troy and the infield,
- 1:15:38Stardewald Davis Clementi in the outfield, benched behind the plate,
- 1:15:41and Marichael, the pitcher, starting off with Brooks Robinson, who grounded to Helston.
- 1:15:47Back in the second inning.
- 1:15:49Marichael ready and goes outside in low ball one.
- 1:15:52And seeking a good place on Robinson's bouncer, it went under the glove of Troy.
- 1:15:56Back in the second inning, and Helston, the hole and threw well on the run.
- 1:16:01To get it.
- 1:16:02Now, it's down to the eighth all-star game.
- 1:16:05Walters pop high and foul.
- 1:16:07Bench comes over after it.
- 1:16:08May does, but it will make it a heat off to the right.
- 1:16:1116 innings.
- 1:16:12Juan has allowed seven hits.
- 1:16:14Two runs, only one earned run.
- 1:16:16He's earned an average in all-star play.
- 1:16:180-5-6.
- 1:16:20He's 1-2 in Los Nantes.
- 1:16:22Chairman with Willie May is out of there.
- 1:16:24I think it may be finally a concession to age.
- 1:16:27From my memory, Willie has always wanted to go to the full all-star game,
- 1:16:31and has played as many as I can remember all of the game.
- 1:16:36Well, that's to Brooks.
- 1:16:37That's two balls, one strike.
- 1:16:39Marichael, Danny can talk to you about him as we progress,
- 1:16:41but he throws from all angles at all different kinds of pitches.
- 1:16:45Right here with a 2-1 count to Brooks Robinson.
- 1:16:47He'd out that in the fourth-side arm,
- 1:16:49and it's a high and outside-fift this time,
- 1:16:51and it's three-and-one.
- 1:16:53I think the incredible thing about Marichael is his control.
- 1:16:56He's always had good stuff, never overpowering,
- 1:16:59but good fastball, good curveball, good screwball,
- 1:17:02but he's always managed to have great command.
- 1:17:05Center field, Willie Davis, going back near the warning track,
- 1:17:08about 380 feet away,
- 1:17:10and takes the drive of Brooks Robinson for the first out in the last of the fourth.
- 1:17:14Given as easy as it is to hit the ball out in right field,
- 1:17:19that's just how difficult it is to hit it out in left field.
- 1:17:22If the ball is hit to the left of center field,
- 1:17:25well, there's just very little chance of driving it through that wind.
- 1:17:28Now, here's another case in point-scented, Bill Freehand,
- 1:17:31on the second inning back,
- 1:17:33Willie Stark goes to the wall in left, where it was caught.
- 1:17:36He had hard enough to get out of here.
- 1:17:38One out, last to the fourth, four to three,
- 1:17:40the American League leading the National League,
- 1:17:42trying to break that eight-game losing streak to the senior circuit.
- 1:17:45Marichau throws a big Lonnie Pop curve that drops over,
- 1:17:48and that's about the ump-seump different delivery style we've seen already,
- 1:17:52and this is just the second batter.
- 1:17:54Here also, in Marichau's delivery, he kicks his leg very high,
- 1:17:58which has to add a little bit to the deception.
- 1:18:00Now comes back with a fastball,
- 1:18:02off the same motion practically,
- 1:18:04and it's fouled at the plate, and it's two strikes to Freehand.
- 1:18:08Started him off with a big curve ball,
- 1:18:11that was almost like the famous blooper ball of years gone by,
- 1:18:15and then came back with a fastball at the knees.
- 1:18:18That was fouled into the just five-freehand.
- 1:18:20Marichau ready, now comes back with a fastball that's blown away,
- 1:18:23one ball, two strikes.
- 1:18:26Like Ceron, Tiger stayed in Detroit,
- 1:18:29where rain had been forecasted, and then they changed them on.
- 1:18:32No rain expected.
- 1:18:3486 degrees of game time, maybe in the high 50s before it's all over.
- 1:18:38Marichau back with another curve, misses, and it's two and two.
- 1:18:44He has got to be battling.
- 1:18:46Well, Jim Palmer is to go two innings.
- 1:18:49He has already gone one, and warming up is Mike Cuiar of Baltimore,
- 1:18:54so we were going right along with the plans that he said he would.
- 1:18:58Two, two, sidearm this time, and just as Miss Marichau thought he had it,
- 1:19:03Bench thought he had it.
- 1:19:05Like Humon said, no, three balls, two strikes to Freehand.
- 1:19:12Sidearm fastball, and if it's missed outside, it only missed by that much.
- 1:19:22Another fastball, hit high in the air,
- 1:19:24may in that first phase over, looking at the wall,
- 1:19:28when the blowing anti-captures it's finally near the dugout of a national league.
- 1:19:33Two out.
- 1:19:34This is also the time of evening where it's very difficult to see some of those pop flies.
- 1:19:38This guy is not quite dark, and it's not really light enough
- 1:19:42that the ball would appear black, or dark enough that the ball would appear white in the light.
- 1:19:46And many a pop fly or fly ball has been lost in this kind of condition.
- 1:19:51When this guy finally does get darker, it's much easier to see it.
- 1:19:55Now here's Police Aperishio, a lot of ball players figure that there are other short stops
- 1:20:02like Leo Cardenas is on the squad that should have been voted to the starting role,
- 1:20:05but Aperishio got the fans vote.
- 1:20:08Here he is as he takes a strike for Marichau,
- 1:20:10and he started after being hit less than some time,
- 1:20:13the third inning, full run rally by leading it off with a single, up for the second time.
- 1:20:19Strike one, Marichau right back with a fast ball at strike two call.
- 1:20:25National League got two runs, all fenches over in the second, Aaron hit one out of the third,
- 1:20:32and then Reggie Jackson and Frank Robinson combined for two run homers in the third for the American League.
- 1:20:38Sidearm pitch almost underarm misses, and it's one ball through strikes.
- 1:20:43Marichau comes over the top and then all degrees of angles down to almost underarm.
- 1:20:52Sidearm this time, it's in the dirt, the ball's two strikes.
- 1:20:56Aperishio with two out of them last to the fourth.
- 1:20:58In addition to all the other pitches that he throws,
- 1:21:01Marichau has probably one of the better sliders I think in baseballs.
- 1:21:05A lot of pitches throw the slider, very few of them can make it go down.
- 1:21:09Most of them, it breaks flat, his breaks down a little bit, which is awfully tough to hit.
- 1:21:14There's another sidearm fastball that again, Marichau thought he had and Ben thought he had,
- 1:21:19but Frank Humantz at play-dumpire said no, as in the case of Rehan, and again we go to three-two, this time on Aperishio.
- 1:21:31Willie Davis playing a very short center field, not near one of the white stars.
- 1:21:35We have red, white and blue stars in the upfield, there's a ball hit off the glove of Marichau,
- 1:21:39Gash is overpicked, up has plenty of time to throw on the lee-may, and Marichau has a one, two, three innings.
- 1:21:45The run-tip series is on four pull innings.
- 1:21:47The Marichau League four, the National League three.
- 1:21:53The Retail Clutch International Association has in its ranks many thousands of teenage store workers
- 1:21:59who through their union enjoy good working conditions.
- 1:22:01In order to attain sound objectives both for themselves and their country, they need clear heads and healthy bodies.
- 1:22:07The Retail Clutch Union urges the youth of America to avoid harmful drug habits, and a registered vote so that they can make vital contributions to next year's elections.
- 1:22:16This message from the Retail Clutch International Association, Washington, D.C. 2006.
- 1:22:22Ever see a red lemon? I got one with four doors and eight cylinders. You may think you're stuck driving a lemon, when all you're really stuck with is a dirty carburetor,
- 1:22:32because that's all it may take to make your car's engine run rough or lose power.
- 1:22:36But the solution is here, new STV double-power gasoline treatment, double-strengths to help tune your engine as you drive, power to clean with power to burn.
- 1:22:46Add again next time you fill out. To love improve your car, say all the call is lemonade. You'll really feel the difference.
- 1:22:56Jim Simpson with Sandy Co-Facts as we go to the fifth inning. Jim Palmer ready to start his second.
- 1:23:03Inning Arm and Island relief of Byte of Blue who worked the first three innings, gave up all three runs on two homers, stuck out two and walked nobody.
- 1:23:11And now coming up, Lynn Becker of the Chicago Cup, who lined at the Mercer and Deep Center field back in the second inning when Byte of Blue first ran into trouble.
- 1:23:20President Gomez, the coast is third. It'll be Becker, Halston and Willie Davis.
- 1:23:30Davis, batting in the number nine spot. Jim Palmer ready to throw to Becker to fouls it off upstairs to the right, strike one.
- 1:23:40Palmer's tears into freehand as Ketcher throws another fastball right under the glove of Palmer, picked up by the second baseman, Caruil, throws on in the dirt, but it's scooped up by Cash, Fine, Clay, Becker, Gritire for the first down of the fifth.
- 1:24:05I think on that play, you have to give Jim Palmer assist. He didn't touch it very much, but he got another that can slow the ball down and give Caruichette to make a fine play behind second base on Becker.
- 1:24:20Here comes by Halston, the switch hitter, and we're now seeing byte up, batting left handed against the right handed, Jim Palmer.
- 1:24:28Against Byte of Blue, he's by the right field. Caruilton likes to bat, but he's batting left handed. He's a good batter from both sides, but with that advantage of the extra step towards the plate, so first, I mean.
- 1:24:39Well, high fastball, that's it. He looks as though he might have won it, and Brooks Robinson reacts very quickly in on the grass at third base.
- 1:24:47Now, you, Ma, are waving somebody away. The players of the National League are sitting on the top step with their legs on the playing surface, and Alsparchy Anderson is going to come out and say, how come?
- 1:25:01And now, Alsparchy understands from you, Ma, what he means, they can't have their legs on the field. In case there's a high pop foul hit over that area and not his defense, goes back and actually shows something to his players to say, I would imagine, inside that dugout.
- 1:25:17Well, the, the serve of the players gave, thank you, Lord, just a little bit of heat as he started over.
- 1:25:23Fastball misses and two balls, no strike. It's about health. One out on the fifth inning.
- 1:25:32An explosive ball game with four home runs. As the ball foul out of play to the left by Halsey, it's two and a lot.
- 1:25:41Being able to bounce to Wig House and does not only helps you to get a base hit occasionally, it forces a third base in the foul like Brooks to play in just a little bit shallower, and the first bases.
- 1:25:55And because of this, as Halsey hits the ball on the ground, maybe the ball has a better chance of getting through the infield.
- 1:26:00Another foul out in the left field line. Fastball pins, but Mike Criard continues to warm up. Two balls and two strikes for Halsey.
- 1:26:12Now we've seen those four home runs and we've seen Brooks Robinson with a specialty, robbing a man of a base hit at third base.
- 1:26:18A few months now out of the spot for Ion O'm Blake down on the grass along the third base line and staring down on the bullpen.
- 1:26:30Mike has been moving around quite a bit tonight. Two, two, one out, fifth inning, four to three, American League, Palmer ready and throws a fastball.
- 1:26:37It's four, now Perishio takes it on one half and despite Halsey's great speed, he throws it out.
- 1:26:47Now here is Willie Davis batting in the number nine spot. How many times have you seen except in the all star game, a 350 hitter hitting the number nine?
- 1:26:58I think this is Willie's first all star game and he deserves to be there.
- 1:27:03For many years there were a lot of critics of Willie Davis in Los Angeles and a lot of other cities because the man has to look out, they thought he could do more.
- 1:27:12In the last few years he's getting everything he can out of his talent. He's become a great hitter and he has great speed.
- 1:27:19Davis, three home run, 45 RBIs, takes high and away, ball one.
- 1:27:24Left handed batter swings the bat constantly, waits now for a fastball, drills one to center field, Mercer comes in, takes it on the first half and Davis, that is all star appearance, has to be this.
- 1:27:35The first of Jim Palmer, the third of the game and with two outs, here comes Roberto Cometi for bat.
- 1:27:45Four times for batting champion in the National League.
- 1:27:53Cometi hitting a 342 eight home runs and 48 RBIs. Coming up, twisting that head of theirs as he often does and play right field like few other people ever have in the history of this ball game.
- 1:28:08And with a very speedy Davis, the tying run on the first base, there are two out and here is Cometi.
- 1:28:16Here we've also got some action now in the National League both end, it looks like Ferguson Jenkins is up and throwing and he's getting ready in a hurry.
- 1:28:24I just wonder what would happen if it was time to use a hitter here for Mercer.
- 1:28:28Mercer, this is the second first base of Davis, just does get back.
- 1:28:33Catch at the ball on him, but what do you have to flip back?
- 1:28:36Mercer fasts in the number five spot. There's a ball fouled at the screen by Cometi, a fastball thrown by Jim Palmer.
- 1:28:43Lee May will bat in the second spot where Aaron was.
- 1:28:49Four runs, four hits, no errors for the American League, three runs, three hits, no errors for the National League. All runs are scored on home runs.
- 1:28:59Palmer working of course from a set position throws to first again and Davis dies back again this time, it wasn't close to the first time.
- 1:29:06A little bit more respect for the pick off motion, Jim Palmer, there he goes and the ball is fouled off. Davis loses his hat, great jump, but after retreats the first base.
- 1:29:15Here you run as fast as Willie does, there will be a lot of times you're going to run out from under your hat.
- 1:29:20He creates a lot of wind under that, Willie's nickname with the Dodgers with three dogs.
- 1:29:25When he first came to the Dodgers he was young, very thin, he had this great long stride which he still does.
- 1:29:32It sort of reminded you of a good Greyhound running and he picked up the nickname Three Dog and I think it stuck.
- 1:29:39Two strikes to count Cometi, two outs. Davis not running high, Fitz, high on inside.
- 1:29:48Throwing in the American League bullpen Jenkins in the National League bullpen.
- 1:29:53Beautiful night in Detroit, Michigan outside your stadium.
- 1:29:59Little or no humidity, biggest factor is the wind, but seems to have calmed a little bit now and blowing toward right field.
- 1:30:07But still blowing pretty good, so many weights on a one ball two strike and it's called out on strikes, gets into the pit, did not swing and it's called out on strikes.
- 1:30:16A run, one hit, no errors and one left. We go to the last of the fifth, the American League lead from National League four to three.
- 1:30:23Hi, this is Joe Garajillo. When Owen Zillernoy asked me to do some commercials for cargator packaging, I asked him, what's so special about an ordinary box?
- 1:30:33He said, I get an earful about how cargator boxes have to do special things like absorb shock, shed moisture, insulate, display or whatever the product inside calls for.
- 1:30:44In fact, every box is something special at Owen Zillernoy with 20 plants producing the best in cargator packaging coast to coast.
- 1:30:53Look them up in the yellow pages.
- 1:30:55Men and skin bracer helps you wake up. Most men slap it on in the morning, right after they shave, but there have been emergencies.
- 1:31:05And now comes the clash of the symbols. No, the symbol is for sleep again. You must have the skin bracer.
- 1:31:17Oh, thanks. I knew that.
- 1:31:22Sandy go back to Jim Simpson in Detroit at the 42nd annual All Star Game.
- 1:31:35Into four and a half innings, the score remains the National League three runs, three hits and no errors.
- 1:31:40The American League leading four runs, four hits and no errors.
- 1:31:44One better shell in for a second inning in this four to three ball game and Frank Cowher steps in to bat for the pitcher Jim Blommer who has worked his two innings and did it very effectively.
- 1:31:55Cowher was 15 home runs this year.
- 1:31:58Batting at 294, 43 RBI's in the first. That's tremendous power.
- 1:32:03In batting practice, Frank was beating most of the balls into the ground.
- 1:32:07But when he connected, they were long gone. He left the even against the wind. Now shall ready and throws and it's right.
- 1:32:15Believe it's a long time since Frank has seen one there shall but one gave Frank a lot of trouble when Frank was with the Dodgers and one with the Giants.
- 1:32:25One strike pitch, overhand curveball and a swinging strike two.
- 1:32:29Tomer worked two innings, gave up one hit and struck out two and walked nobody in here and dropped no runs.
- 1:32:38White or blue gave up all three runs on two home runs. Two strikes out of Howard, side arms as far as low and one ball two strikes to Howard.
- 1:32:47We are in the fifth inning. The official score tonight is the San Francisco Chronicle Bob Stevens as the president of the baseball right of association of America.
- 1:32:54Watson Foster for Detroit News and Ed Vomosky at the Folgers Daily News.
- 1:32:59Another side arm pitch misses and it's 2-2 to Frank Howard.
- 1:33:04Tom Decker's rod to Rue at this four to three ball game.
- 1:33:10We are in Jenkins continue to warm up in the ball pit. Now shall pitching his second and apparently final inning.
- 1:33:18Side arms pitch, ground ball, playing deep on the grass is Beckard at second base and lost the ball over to Lee May at first and there's one out in the fifth inning.
- 1:33:28If Beckard had been any deeper on the grass at second base he might have run into Clemente out in short right field.
- 1:33:36Here is Karoo who is grounded the second and walked and scored ahead of the home run by Frank Robinson.
- 1:33:43Minnesota second baseman left handed batter against the right handed Juan Marichel facing him for the first time.
- 1:33:53Low pitch ball on.
- 1:33:55Well over the years and this is my sixth consecutive year with the All-Star game. We have had interesting reactions from fans.
- 1:34:03I have a story to tell you in a moment. Here's Marichel's next pitch. It's foul out of play. Tony Kubeck and I were there in the game some years ago.
- 1:34:13We got a wire from a nuclear submarine under the ice cap at the North Pole that was listening to it.
- 1:34:18And another time we got several telegrams from Africa.
- 1:34:22Wherever you are you'd like to hear from it. NBC in New York. There's a high pitch to Karoo.
- 1:34:28And it's two balls one strike. Always interesting to know where we're being heard and to know that people are enjoying the great game of baseball and more specifically the 42nd All-Star game.
- 1:34:40Marichel with the count two and one working Karoo is crouching watching your breaking pitch hit him at the knees on the outside corner. It's two balls two strikes.
- 1:34:49It's a little odd looks as though he wasn't about to swing no matter where the pitch was. Marichel ready with one out of the fifth.
- 1:34:59Fastball misses. It's three and two. Four to three the score. The American League. All runs on homerun.
- 1:35:11The first one is the third. The manager at the choice is the coach at first base.
- 1:35:19Marichel working on three to the career who crosses and waits and a curve ball misses outside and low.
- 1:35:25And there's the first one given up by Marichel. The second by the National League and both go to Rob Karoo.
- 1:35:37Marichel checks with Lee May at first base forcing Karoo to retreat. May holding him and there's another throw to first base.
- 1:35:45Karoo has pretty good speed. I don't know if he's been negated too much by that severe leg injury that he had last year. And of course most are confused about it.
- 1:35:55Marichel ready throws a fastball right down the middle like one. All kinds of motion again from Juan Marichel.
- 1:36:05And back is Carter Semski.
- 1:36:11Marichel working from the set position ready again throws a breaking pitch and Marichel swings and misses. It strikes him.
- 1:36:19I think that was the screwball right there. Easy to fool Bobby with. He had him out in front and the ball breaking away from him.
- 1:36:25He was way out in front and didn't have a good cut at the ball.
- 1:36:34Marichel throwing an intervention now throws another breaking pitch and down he goes swinging.
- 1:36:39Mercer strikes out the first strike out for Juan Marichel. The second for the American League.
- 1:36:46Those last two were hard screwballs. Usually it used to be almost like a change up for Marichel when he threw the screwball.
- 1:36:54But now he's developed it and throws a little bit harder. And you don't know what he's going to throw.
- 1:36:59As you say he's got so many pitches and so many different motions. He doesn't usually throw sidearms or left hand hitters though.
- 1:37:06And Carter Semski 0-2 on the night is up there and he is a left handed hitter as Marichel continues to watch Rod Tru over at first base.
- 1:37:15When Beckett the second baseman is back on the grass, Semski takes the fastball low if ball wants.
- 1:37:22Semski granted to Beckett the second and the first and popped out hitting the first pitch to Harrelson in the third.
- 1:37:29Four to three the American League leads were the last of the fifth.
- 1:37:33Marichel following Ellis coming on in the fourth inning. Swinging a net to the breaking pitch.
- 1:37:38It's one ball one strike. May of Cincinnati at first. Beckett of Chicago at second.
- 1:37:43Harrelson of New York at short. Troy of St. Louis at third. Dargill of Pittsburgh at left.
- 1:37:48Davis of Los Angeles and Center. Clementia of Pittsburgh and right. Bens of Cincinnati behind the plate of Marichel of San Francisco pitching the Semski up boxes.
- 1:37:57Another check to Kerou. That's the fourth time tonight he's checked Rod at first base.
- 1:38:03One more one strike to Semski.
- 1:38:07Wynn continues to blow and remains a factor.
- 1:38:11Another breaking pitch low and away. It's two and one to Carter Semski.
- 1:38:17They have a red star out of left field a white star in center field a blue star in right field.
- 1:38:26Bunting around the ballpark a capacity crowd. Beckett sold out two days after they went on sale here.
- 1:38:32Targis did in there. She'll back with the fastball and found out a play by his Semski behind the plate.
- 1:38:39There's putting laced across the tops of the dugouts of the American League on the third base side and the National League on the first base side.
- 1:38:47Tiger Stadium one of the real remaining what they used to call ballpark. Now there are stadiums around the league.
- 1:38:54Brand new beautiful stadiums that have sprung up in St. Louis, Dome, Stadium in Houston, Atlanta, Philadelphia,
- 1:39:03the big a Kansas City will have one next year. Tiger Stadium like Fenway Park in Boston, Wrigley Field in Chicago, White Sox Park,
- 1:39:14County Stadium in Milwaukee which now has to be called an older stadium.
- 1:39:21This one goes way back two out one on last for the fifth.
- 1:39:25Now a shower working with a two to count to Boston's Carter Semski.
- 1:39:30As you're ready with that big motion and there's a ground ball and Beckett is waiting right there pulled around to the right and tosses on to Lee May
- 1:39:36and it's no one, no hits, no errors and one left.
- 1:39:39It's now gone five, four innings, that is four to three the American League leads.
- 1:39:44Ready on the clock.
- 1:39:46Here is the filming of a TV commercial in which a man will shave in less than 20 seconds to test the genetic razor.
- 1:39:52The second guarantee it will never cut you but tecmatic is made to reduce the risk. Tecmatic is specially designed for fewer nicks or cuts.
- 1:40:00And that's it. 16.8 seconds a good close shave with a nick or cut in the nicks.
- 1:40:06That tecmatic looks great.
- 1:40:08Watch for this commercial on TV. Prove that your lec tecmatic is tough on your beard not on your face.
- 1:40:14The many thousands of teenagers who are members of the Retail Clerk's International Association know that their overall well-being is an spot of good working conditions

- 1:40:31The Retail Clerk's Union urges the youth of America to avoid harmful drugs and to register to vote in next year's election.
- 1:40:37This message from the Retail Clerk's International Association, Washington, D.C. 2006.
- 1:40:43Now we pause. 30 seconds for station identification.
- 1:40:47Shop Specters, gigantic summer clearance of men's and boys clothing and sportswear, all famous brands, sale now in progress at Specters 233 Central Avenue, Albany.
- 1:40:59This is D.C. 50, your contact code. Call us weeknight from 8 to midnight.
- 1:41:04The fresh air sound of Radio 81 WGY is connected in.
- 1:41:20Jim Simpson with Sandy Co. Facts as we start the sixth inning. Mike Cuellar is on the mound and are you ready if you're keeping score?
- 1:41:27Armand Cuellarbrew has gone in at first base. Cookie Rojas is at second base. Amos Otis has gone to center field. Al Kailine at the throttle is going to right field.
- 1:41:36So right now, your American League lineup in the field, freehand behind the plate. Cuellarbrew at first, Rojas at second.
- 1:41:43After each short, short, we pause for Kailine out on right field. Brooks Robinson remains at third. Yastemsky in left, Otis in center, Kailine in right.
- 1:41:51And Lee May comes to bat for the first time in this four to three ball game to face Mike Cuellarbrew.
- 1:41:57He's won the 11 ball games in a row and he is 13-1 on the year. Left handed pitcher from the Baltimore Orioles to face the right-handing hitting, Lee May.
- 1:42:06First pitch, big breaking pitch, curve ball strike one.
- 1:42:16Lee May hitting a 295 with 23 home runs and 55 RBIs from the Cincinnati Reds. Cuellarbrew back again misses outside.
- 1:42:24They say, then, about Mike Cuellarbrew that, well, to be quite frank, he's got to break a sweat before he becomes effective and wonder is how well he will do.
- 1:42:34He's been warming up for a long time as a hot fit has fouled back as he faces Lee May.
- 1:42:39Here there are a lot of pitches like that. Cuellarbrew is one of those those if you don't get him early, you're not usually going to get him.
- 1:42:46If he has his trouble, he has it early in the ball game and these kinds of games where you come in and pitch a couple of things, sometimes Mike could have a little trouble getting loose.
- 1:42:54Now that pitch is up high and away from Lee May and it's two balls, two strikes.
- 1:43:00Big red machine. Cincinnati. Cuellarbrew Baltimore which beats Cincinnati.
- 1:43:09Ground ball on a breaking pitch into the American League bullpen down the third base side.
- 1:43:14So Cuellar and Lee May are well acquainted from last year's five game world series in which Baltimore took Cincinnati.
- 1:43:22Matter of fact, there's Sparky Anderson made out this mash and league lineup yesterday. Here's Cuellar's pitch. A big curve ball that misses outside and it's three and two.
- 1:43:33As he said, May's to leader off. Aaron, that's second. Troy third. Stardale fourth. McCuffey fifth. Ben sixth. Sparky's again to lap.
- 1:43:41That's the most funny shot all of 1971.
- 1:43:45Three and two down to May. The first man and somebody's yelling, hold it, hold it, hold it. It's Apparecio yelling, now puts Robinson yelling and now they're looking up into the seats behind home plate.
- 1:44:00And an usher walks over there and says something. It was Robinson that calls on and here's a high and away pitch and May becomes the first man to draw a base on ball.
- 1:44:12Cuellar gives it up.
- 1:44:19Just looking at Cuellar, he hasn't thrown any pitches very hard. He's throwing the slow curve ball. He's another pitcher with a good screwball.
- 1:44:27I think Mike's best pitch over the years has been the screwball. He has a good fastball. You must have a good fastball.
- 1:44:33Otherwise, none of the other pitches will work for you. And he hasn't thrown anything very hard. Everything's been sort of soft and very slow.
- 1:44:41Maybe having a little bit of trouble getting loose. Frank Piermont called Sparky Anderson, the manager of the National League, all stars from the dugout and had a conversation with him looking over the lineup.
- 1:44:51Now, we see that Don Kessinger, shortstop of the Chicago Cups, is up and working out down in the bullpen of the National League, along the right field line.
- 1:45:02Here we are, ready to face Joe Troy, who's over two on the night. Goes in the fastball, round ball to Brooks Robinson, goes down to second base to Rojas. Rojas turns it over to first, double play, first to the night.
- 1:45:17Cuellar takes the National League with the World Series and the All Star Games. He's seen enough of Brooks Robinson that they don't want to hit it to him. They just try somebody else.
- 1:45:25Otherwise, every 28 to Brooks, it seems like he either gets the water or two out. Well, I was also a test sandy for Cookie Rojas, who came off the bench and was in, and the second man up.
- 1:45:38With him in the in-deal, he had to be the middleman on a very quick double play. Here is Stardale, and they pulled way around in the right form. And he takes a big cut at the first one.
- 1:45:47The ball was hit by a pitch by Vita Blue in the second and struck out on a very disputed play in the fourth.
- 1:45:55Ball rolled back to the screen, freehand got it through on the first base, while Stardale thought he'd fouled it off. Didn't think it was a third strike.
- 1:46:02Like wonder what it was. Two out of the sixth inning. Four to three, the American League. They are ready to throw and throws a big curve at Stardale.
- 1:46:10No one around didn't want to, but Eumann gave it a call to the figure and said, yes, you did. It's two strikes.
- 1:46:17Stardale with 30 homeruns, 87 RBI's, is hitless on the night, although he has been hit.
- 1:46:26It's like Colbert may be out. There's another pitch, breaking pitch inside one ball, two strikes, and if Willie Stardale gets on, the number one, Mellishaar Battingen, the number five spot, Nate Colbert of the San Diego Padres,
- 1:46:38our hitter will step in. We are the third American League pitcher by the blue Jim Palmer. Now Mike Quay are ready and throws a fast ball, but just inside.
- 1:46:48Two balls, two strikes. Mike gave him a big, slow, easy motion and then fired the ball inside to Willie Stardale.
- 1:47:00Four homeruns have accounted for all the runs in this 4-3 ballgame. Big curve and he got him swinging. Bout your strike shot for the second time and the second time in a row.
- 1:47:10Now the run hits the run, we go to the last of the sixth, the American League four, the National League three.
- 1:47:19Now this is the time of the year when the whole performance really counts, with temperatures way up, you want an oil that will really protect your engine.
- 1:47:26And that's precisely what you get with Phillips 66 topotic motor oil. The all-season motor oil.
- 1:47:32Got what it takes to keep your engine well lubricated and running smooth no matter how high the temperature goes on the road.
- 1:47:38But more Phillips 66 topotic motor oil has the patented detergent attitude to help keep your PCV valve running clean.
- 1:47:45Now that's important, because if your PCV valve isn't kept clean and becomes clogged, your engine can't breathe properly.
- 1:47:53When that happens you can use more gas and more oil. Forget the oil that gives you the kind of performance you can rely on.
- 1:47:59Phillips 66 topotic motor oil. If you're waiting you now at the same place you go for the free-for-the-money performance gasoline.
- 1:48:06Develop 66 stations nearer to you.
- 1:48:12Don Cussinger has moved in at shortstop replacing Bud Harrelson and Berguson Jenkins.
- 1:48:22There comes the new pitcher. Jim and I would have to think in this situation that Cussinger will come into the ballgame and hit in the number five spot replacing Marichal.
- 1:48:33And Jenkins will move into Bud Harrelson's spot. No right up.
- 1:48:42Well you'll hear a hand here Al Kailan.
- 1:48:55Kailan the youngest man ever to win a batting championship in the American League.
- 1:49:02He has a 3-24 all-star batting average.
- 1:49:08But this is his first all-star game in five years and since 1961 Kailan, a fine hitter, has only had one all-star hit.
- 1:49:17Kailan hitting better than 300, 303, eight home runs, 28 RBI's and there's a base hit.
- 1:49:28Al didn't hit that ball very hard. It looked like he hit it on the end of the bat with one hand. It looked like one hand came off the bat.
- 1:49:38But in the box score it looked like a line drive and went right back through the middle for the single.
- 1:49:41Well here's Harman Killibrew filling in for Norm Cash at first base and Killibrew got off to a great hitting start but it's left to 257.
- 1:49:49Leads the American League and RBI's with 60. Has 11 home runs and there's a pitch from Berguson Jenkins that's ball one.
- 1:49:56Killibrew now has 498, right time home run.
- 1:50:02Two more and he joins that exclusive 500 club.
- 1:50:06Don Wilson, there's a ground ball by Killibrew Fowl. Don Wilson, the last man of replacement for Larry Drucker,
- 1:50:12of the Houston Astros right-hander who can throw very hard.
- 1:50:16He's now out and warming up at the National League bullpen.
- 1:50:19Kailan on at first base, not quick but very smart and very good base runner.
- 1:50:24Killibrew with all that power right-handed batter from the Minnesota Twins.
- 1:50:28Steps in. He is hit one over the roof and left field is. One of two men to do it, the other is Frank Howard.
- 1:50:35Jenkins throws strikes, Paul. One ball, two strikes.
- 1:50:42Killibrew hit four home runs here last year, has none thus far this year.
- 1:50:52Oh, the first base where Kailan is not going anywhere.
- 1:50:56Jenkins 13-8 this year, 2.83 on one average and this is the second all-star game.
- 1:51:02Berguson of course, great record.
- 1:51:05Throws now, low on away to Killibrew and it's two and two.
- 1:51:08And Jenkins says that he's got the proof as employers that he belongs in the same group with Bob Gibson of St. Lawrence.
- 1:51:20Among others. And that he has won 20 more ball games for the last four years.
- 1:51:25Low again to Killibrew.
- 1:51:27Berguson says, well, they don't pay me like they pay Bob Gibson. I'll just have to prove it.
- 1:51:333 and 2 to Killibrew. Kailan on at first with that bloop single on the first pitch to Jenkins through.
- 1:51:434 to 3, the American League last of the sixth. The runner's going to go long drive, deep left field, back to the start zone, looks up, home run.
- 1:52:142 and you've got to know that that ball was hit very hard to get out of this ballpark tonight.
- 1:52:23It was high, it was a high fly ball in the left field. It went out rather easily and the wind is still blowing very hard out there.
- 1:52:31But as you said before, Killibrew has a lot of power to hit that ball very hard.
- 1:52:36But Robinson is grounded out and lying deep to center field, up for the third time, turned over one double-play and quick order and robbed another man of a base hit.
- 1:52:476 to 3, the score. Another low pitch from Jenkins who has faced two men, has given up a single to Kailan and a two-run homer to Killibrew.
- 1:52:56The American League leads 6 to 3, they have had three two-run homers. The National League has one two-run homer and a solo home run.
- 1:53:04Hitters ballpark, you betcha. There's a strike call on the outside corner. 2 and a one to Brooks Robinson.
- 1:53:12This is Robin Killibrew's third all-star game home run. It had that under his 498 during the regular season. He's already at over 5 and a long drive, center field, Brooks Robinson has a third consecutive hit off Ferguson Jenkins.
- 1:53:29Don Wilson continues to throw 6 to 3 ball game and now for the Detroit fans, the Bill Freyhan has almost put one out of here and found out in Connect it'll be a perfect night.
- 1:53:40Freyhan the Detroit catcher.
- 1:53:42Killibrew after wonder a little bit whether or not Ferguson Jenkins is healthy. Maybe he's having a little bit of a problem. I don't know what but when that first man got the base hit, manager Sparky Anderson got done, Wilson up in the bullpen and usually an all-star game pitcher doesn't get up that quickly behind another all-star pitcher.
- 1:54:01Freyhan looks at a fast ball and it's blown away. Ball one. 6 to 3, the score. Last for the sixth inning, the American League has lost 8 and a low, 12 for the last 13.
- 1:54:10The National League leads 24 to 17 overall and this game that was started back in 1933. Jenkins working from the stretch throws, blown away again. It is 2 and 0.
- 1:54:20The Freyhan. Don Bents looks out to Jenkins. Don Wilson continues to throw out of the bullpen for the National League down the right field line.
- 1:54:34There's been lots of power exhibited tonight. Jenkins throws a fast ball. This is the strike. Two balls, one strike.
- 1:54:44Three home runs by the American League. Two by the National and it's not over yet. Remember what we said, most were predicting this would be something like a 12 to 11 ball game.
- 1:54:55Jenkins throws high but keeps and in that win to center field, Drs. Willi Davis circling under it, they've all held it up and blew it back toward right and he catches it for the first out of the sixth inning.
- 1:55:08Started out well but just simply died in that win. And here's that ratio, 1 for 2. He started a 4-1 rally with a single back in the third inning.
- 1:55:21Six runs on seven it's now. No errors for the American League. Three runs, three hits. No errors for the National League and the National League is now in its ninth consecutive game without an all-star error.
- 1:55:32Jenkins throws fast ball. Good looking fast ball and it's strike one.
- 1:55:39It is Lee May at first. Glenn Beckert at second. Don Kessinger at short. Joe Toy at third. Stardul in left. Davis and Center. Clement at right and Bents catching that clean strike thrown by Marichael de Pitcher.
- 1:55:50Two strikes to Luis Aperichield. Aperichield now 37 years old and what a short stop he has been in the American League.
- 1:56:02Ground ball. Chance for Beckert who goes to Kessinger back to first base double play. And out of the inning but not before the American League gets two runs on that home run by Killeburt left.
- 1:56:12He runs on three hits. No errors and none left. He's on six full innings. The American League six for National League three.
- 1:56:21The retail clerk's international association has in its ranks many thousands of teenage store workers who through their union enjoy good working conditions.
- 1:56:28They know that the obtained sound objectives both for themselves and their country. They need clear heads and healthy bodies.
- 1:56:35The retail clerk's union urges the youth of America to avoid harmful drug habits and register the vote so that they can make vital contributions to next year's election.
- 1:56:43This message from the retail clerk's international association Washington D.C. two oh oh oh six.
- 1:56:50My auntie first one keep me dry. Sometimes yes. Sometimes no. More times no.
- 1:56:57Well I'd like to say that my auntie first one keeps me dry all the time but I have this thing about ours.
- 1:57:04Here's to still get wet. You got the dark in her room with her eyes dark and her spirits of hope. Super try and stuff.
- 1:57:17Here's to still get wet.
- 1:57:24In Simpson Sandy Kofax seventh inning forty second old star game at six to three the American League and down.
- 1:57:34Cassinger who was up and ready to pass before a stagial was struck out to end the sixth inning.
- 1:57:40The Chicago Cubs shortstop will lead it up. Cassinger switch hit her hitting a 288 to home run 25 RBI.
- 1:57:50The second inning fifth year and for you national advantage. That's quite unusual. Don is ordinarily the leadoff that her for the Chicago Cubs
- 1:57:58and quite a leadoff man. Months well runs pretty well with a basketball player.
- 1:58:04Good eyes strikes out seldom switch hitters and valves the first one off strike one.
- 1:58:13For you weaver goes according to plan pitching his second and final inning with Mickey Lovach of Detroit was not yet begun to warm up.
- 1:58:22Schedule the pitch eight and nine like one again by Cassinger strike two.
- 1:58:34Felix beyond is out. None of Braves infielder and warming up in the bullpen but the American League killer is at first row house.
- 1:58:41Short Robinson is third. Left Otis and center Kailan and right freehand giving the signal to Kway-R who's what it fits on the two strike count misses outside the downtown.
- 1:58:52I wonder how many more changes are we will make in this ballgame. He's got a pretty good defensive ball club in there now and with this play run lead I think he'd want to have his best defensive club on the field.
- 1:59:04One to the count right field is hit Kailan is there drops in a few steps and has it one of the few easy outs of the ballgame.
- 1:59:14And that'll bring up Johnny Bench. Well you know what weaver said Sandy with eight consecutive losses to the national league.
- 1:59:21He said we have come here to win. He said I'm not here to win a popularity contest to play everybody. We have come here to win.
- 1:59:29The American League has argued as we've said that of those eight consecutive losses five have been by one run three in extra innings.
- 1:59:36Remember they had a three run leading in the ninth inning a year ago and lost the next inning. Big curve that Bench tried to pump by the time the slow curve got there Johnny was halfway down the first base line.
- 1:59:47I think part of that was a little bit of my play between Johnny Bench and Brooks Robinson. Brooks has got all kinds of line drives and Bench has got a butt out of him just see if he can play that deep and still throw him out on the bus.
- 2:00:01Like one pitch is a fastball to Brooks Robinson passes drop base hit in our field and Bench was a two run homer has a second hit. And the other time at that he was robbed by Robinson in the fourth inning. So John is having quite an all star game.
- 2:00:17And Brooks just pointed over to John's the bed and I think I don't think Brooks would have caught the ball anyway but the attempted but did bring him in his depth or two and maybe every little bit help.
- 2:00:30Hillabrew is now saying do I hold Bench or not. And is standing just off the back at first base down the line at this not on the back at all as Becker to his line down and ground it out right handed better second baseman from the
- 2:00:45top steps in and take the curve first like one one out of the seventh National League trailing the American League six to three all runs of scored on home runs. And if you just join us you have missed part of all games.
- 2:01:02And the third base says he's got it now he says that we show you've got it so the rest takes and Becker is out. And here comes Colbert.
- 2:01:18Nate Colbert comes in as a pinch hitter Colbert Colbert hitting a 277 19 ohm runs 51 RBI right handed batter has the bat back on his shoulder as the delivery started and lifted off and takes like one
- 2:01:47San Diego Pottery right handed is getting power man right the open stance rather deep in the box play our left handed batter working at the right hand of Colbert with two outs towards him a curve that's a strike to the knees it's two strikes to Colbert.
- 2:02:07Nate didn't think so. Micky Wollich has now begun to throw for the American League down the third base line. Bench leads off a couple of steps from first base. We also the fastball and strikes him out swinging no one hit no errors one left to the last of the seventh we go the American League six the National League three.
- 2:02:31I say made in Detroit what do you think of automobile what car companies can you think of GM Christoff Ford when I say engineering which of those companies you think of GM do you know what company came up with the first fluid drive.
- 2:02:46I'm I'm tempted to say Christoff right you know what company first offered power steering right now for his company to use torsion bar suspension and all of also price I'm thinking.

- 2:04:46After the better is going out with Kansas City row hot already has been acclaimed the top second baseman in history.
- 2:04:57The other one is out and down Buford another ball no more player is coming in Buford.
- 2:05:07Finally up that having a fine here has three fourteen thirteen or month forty on the eyes on the Southern California football star.
- 2:05:17Everyone on the home run will turn on the mound replace Larry Ducca who had to withdraw.
- 2:05:27Those are breaking pitches outside may at first second and second passenger short story at third.
- 2:05:33Davis and center for many and right bench is catching his fourth catcher Don Wilson Houston one ball got the fastball but this is to an old deal for the switcher and of course is batting left handed against the right handed John Wilson.
- 2:05:54Big swing and a miss you bought one strike.
- 2:06:11Another swing and a miss on Wilson's first pitch to know it for a game over in the national league roster is Rick Warr who has to know it for getting one this year which he had two home runs.
- 2:06:29Two to pitch fastball and simply struck it out swinging and Buford runs out of the third base line as we've always dropped by that.
- 2:06:41Seven completed score.
- 2:06:43I think I think folks and you're Andy and I'm gonna tell you right right.
- 2:07:03You can't look at.
- 2:07:16The many thousands of teenagers are members of the retail clerks in an actual association know that their overall well being is enhanced by the good working conditions achieved by their union.
- 2:07:36The retail clerks in a national association in Washington D.C. to 0 0 0 6.
- 2:07:46Now for the American League we've got Mickey Loewitt of Detroit into the ballgame.
- 2:08:10That's a lot of it.
- 2:08:20The first man he will face is Bobby Barnes of the Giants replacing Willie Davis.
- 2:08:41That's why the changes that made by Sparky Anderson replacing the left handed Willie Davis.
- 2:08:51Pitching to save this ballgame.
- 2:09:01The three runs given up to the National League were given up by Vita Blues but in the last of the third inning in which he technically was still in the ballgame.
- 2:09:11The American League went ahead with four runs.
- 2:09:13This one is in the dirt by the feet of Barnes and skips back to the screen and it's one ball one strike.
- 2:09:22All it's the hero of that 1968 World Series on three games.
- 2:09:33That's all up high and Barnes took a good cut with this.
- 2:09:38Bobby will strike out a lot not necessarily right but has a history of it.
- 2:09:43170 180 times a season trying to cut that down his overall average 312 for the year.
- 2:09:51That's a good start of the Giants already is a start but he's just starting.
- 2:09:54Call him on a third call strike three.
- 2:10:02That is the seventh National Ligger to strike out.
- 2:10:06There have been three American Liggers to have struck out.
- 2:10:12Did you read Lorde's comments this week somewhere?
- 2:10:22He said he's done a lot for the fat guys in this world.
- 2:10:23He says watch him pitch and say there was look at that fat guy.
- 2:10:27He's doing all right and have another beer.
- 2:10:30It's been a lot of things for fat people.
- 2:10:33Here's a little clip money against Palmer back in the fifth inning.
- 2:10:36He's going out on strikes looking.
- 2:10:38This one is under his feet and skips back to the screen again almost the same kind of pitch.
- 2:10:43They've got away from Mickey against Bobby Barnes.
- 2:10:46Ball on the Roberto Cromendi.
- 2:10:50Up for the second time.
- 2:10:53Rollage is a truck trying to save it for the American League before the home folks.
- 2:10:57And this pitch is over strike one.
- 2:11:01Six runs seven hits no errors for the American League.
- 2:11:03Three runs four hits no errors for the National.
- 2:11:11Big curve misses outside.
- 2:11:13Change of curve and three or four feet outside.
- 2:11:17Revolve one strike.
- 2:11:24Remarkable night in the strike.
- 2:11:27Devon Gerrard guesses wrapped to the low 70s.
- 2:11:29Little or no humidity.
- 2:11:31A lot of wind blowing.
- 2:11:33Another big curve that misses again outside and there's three and one Roberto Cromendi.
- 2:11:37On deck is the dangerously man.
- 2:11:40The six three ball game and the miss ball part.
- 2:11:42As you saw when the National League had a three nothing lead.
- 2:11:46He can close up that lead and go ahead in a hurry.
- 2:11:49Jim Terry and Wilbur Ward are working.
- 2:11:51Terry right handers.
- 2:11:53Zion the Ward winner last year.
- 2:11:54Wilbur Ward a left hander and a knuckleballer.
- 2:11:57Back with a fastball hit ripped us on the field.
- 2:11:59Back goes a big speed back looking up at four and fifteen feet away in the upper deck.
- 2:12:04That is 64.
- 2:12:07Three home runs for each team.
- 2:12:09Roberto Cromendi connects.
- 2:12:12And that's five.
- 2:12:14An all-star record of six home runs in the game and we're in the eighth inning.
- 2:12:21Here it seems to me that if you look at all the great hitters they all have good power in the opposite field.
- 2:12:26Roberto Cromendi another one of those right hand hitters who could hit the ball quite a ways to the opposite field.
- 2:12:32He played in the old ballpark in Pittsburgh for many years and that was the shortest fence in the park.
- 2:12:38So he learned to hit the ball the other way.
- 2:12:40The one out on the eighth inning.
- 2:12:41Lee May takes low ball one and Lee May can connect.
- 2:12:47He hit 12 home runs on the 31 games played in June.
- 2:12:50Back with a fastball ground ball lowly chanted it to the mound and throws over to Killiboo at first base for the second out of the dangerous May is put down.
- 2:12:59Now Ron Santow comes up to replace Joe Troy.
- 2:13:03He was hitless in three times at bat.
- 2:13:05Santow obviously will take over for Troy at third base in the last of this eighth inning.
- 2:13:12Six to four to score and when they hit the ball it has gone a long way.
- 2:13:18That's that three we have seen hit into the upper deck in center field San Diego at least for the upper deck.
- 2:13:24Moving the Reggie Jackson one that hit might have gone out of here but it hit up among the lights.
- 2:13:32The Stansons had holed up the lights.
- 2:13:34Joe had we seen two into the upper deck and won over at the one by Reggie Jackson.
- 2:13:39Second pitch to Santow breaking pitch strike one.
- 2:13:42One ball one strike to Ron Santow.
- 2:13:46Santow long time captain of the Cubs 15 home runs this year in Wrigley field 60 RBI getting a two 88.
- 2:13:54Lowlet's ready for all the curve that's inside at low balls one strike a thinning six to four.
- 2:14:02Now for once the expert for life they said at the hitter ballpark.
- 2:14:07You see a lot of home runs and we have seen six lowlet's ready with a fastball swing and a miss by Santow two and two.
- 2:14:15On deck is Willie Stardew who has 30 home runs in regular season play but tonight has struck out twice that has been hit by a pitch.
- 2:14:23May not get a chance to bat in this the eighth inning it all depends on what Santow does.
- 2:14:29The third base run by Doug Harvey the National League is calling time a ball got away in the bullpen down the American League side in left field.
- 2:14:37Everything's all right Santow steps back in on the two to count.
- 2:14:40Lowlet's dares into his own catcher of Detroit teammate Bill Friant.
- 2:14:46Ready to throw fastball feet high one hot to lowlet's has got an easy throw to Killebrew and one run scores on the home run by Climbett.
- 2:14:55That's the only it's no error done left we go to the last of the eighth inning.
- 2:14:58The American League six the National League four.
- 2:15:01Hi this is Joe Gargiola and today I'm going to give you some inside information on cargated packaging from Owens, Illinois.
- 2:15:08These are times when the inside of a box is almost more important than the outside especially if the product you're shipping is fragile or has a funny shape.
- 2:15:17Owens, Illinois has an expert on inside package design at each of the 20 Owens Illinois box plants coast to coast.
- 2:15:25Ask for the inside story.
- 2:15:27Owens, Illinois they're in the yellow pages.
- 2:15:30Men and skin bracer helps you wake up in the morning or any time.
- 2:15:35Stop old ready doctor. Spawn is ready doctor.
- 2:15:38Doctor.
- 2:15:42Skin bracer.
- 2:15:45That's nurse. I needed that.
- 2:15:47If you need waking up, stop on some men and skin bracer.
- 2:15:51It's skin tightness and skin shellers work like a cold slap in the face.
- 2:15:57Thanks men and I needed that.
- 2:16:01This is Sandy Kofax with Jim Simpson at Tiger Stadium in Detroit.
- 2:16:05The National League steel trailing the American League in this ball game but it's a little bit closer now.
- 2:16:11The National League four runs five hits in no errors.
- 2:16:14The American League six runs seven hits in no errors.
- 2:16:17A few changes on the field and the outfield Pete Rose has gone into right field and Bobby Barnes into center field.
- 2:16:24And the changes in the infield will have run Sato at third base and Felix Meehan at second base.
- 2:16:30Jim, that's what Lee Meehan at first, Meehan at second, Kessinger at third, Sando at third.
- 2:16:36Sando remains on the left. You'll get his cuts in the ninth inning.
- 2:16:39Barnes and center rows on the right.
- 2:16:41Bench reminds, remains behind the plate.
- 2:16:44And Don Wilson who had a very good seventh inning will pitch his second inning.
- 2:16:48Wilson got him one, two, three.
- 2:16:50He'll start off with Carl Dyshemski.
- 2:16:53And on deck will be our K-line.
- 2:17:00As all all-star games are, this is a scorekeeper's nightmare or a scorekeeper's dream depending on how you like to go with it.
- 2:17:13Wilson is ready to throw the basketball up hot. He has come to the ball once.
- 2:17:17I loved it when you said, Sando, here are a few changes. You gave four. Only nine people play the game.
- 2:17:23Want to know, Wilson right back and throws hard and fast again.
- 2:17:27But misses again. Two and all Dyshemski. Carl who had four hits last year and was the most valuable player in the game.
- 2:17:35And only two others have had as many as four in one all-star game as Hitler's tonight.
- 2:17:39Oh for three. Left handed batter against the right hander. Wilson defies his third consecutive fastball, all of which have missed.
- 2:17:50Last for the eighth inning. One more half inning and maybe the American League will break that scheme of eight and zero by the National League.
- 2:17:57There's the strike. Three and one. Dyshemski taking all the way.
- 2:18:00But we went into the ninth inning down in Cincinnati last year.
- 2:18:03The American League leading four to one. It was tied up and later won when Pete Rose scored on Jim Hickman's single.
- 2:18:09And when Rose scored, he knocked down Pauki. Down out of play by Dyshemski.
- 2:18:18We've lost two strikes. Carl Dyshemski.
- 2:18:21He missed what Carl said about the blow-up of Billy Connick Lee Howie said, I've been in the major leagues for ten years.
- 2:18:26I've tried my hardest in my heart and in my mind. I've never tried to have anyone traded for soul or fight.
- 2:18:33Ball four. Dyshemski has drawn a walk. That's the third one given up. The first since Ellis was on the mound.
- 2:18:39And here it comes out. Kailine with the first pitch from the sixth slow base hit.
- 2:18:43We're now getting a little action in the National League.
- 2:18:47Rik Wise at the Philadelphia Phillies has gotten up to throw down there.
- 2:18:52Kailine right-handed batter, three-oh-three on the year with eight home runs.
- 2:18:57That win still blows. Cuff the hitter down here for right-handed batter unless he goes to the off the field.
- 2:19:02Takes a strike. Outside connet the knees and some of the tackle fans behind the plate didn't think it was over.
- 2:19:08Arm and killaboo with a home run is on deck.
- 2:19:15Don Wilson draws another fastball and blows it right past the swinging-out Kailine.
- 2:19:20Strike two.
- 2:19:24That win, Sandy, has sprung up. But yeah, it's never really died, but it seems to be a greater velocity like it was back in the second and third inning.
- 2:19:32Again, born court right.
- 2:19:34Gailon takes the fastball outside. One ball, two strikes.
- 2:19:37And Don Wilson is a good fastball pitcher. Lost some of it when he hurt his arm a couple of years ago.
- 2:19:42Has thrown almost exclusively fastballs tonight.
- 2:19:46One ball, two strikes. Count Kailine, another fastball, a tie almost over his head and it's 2-2.
- 2:19:56In the last 59 innings pitched by the National League before tonight, the American League had scored only nine runs in those 59 all-star innings.
- 2:20:04They've scored six in seven innings tonight.
- 2:20:08Wilson back with another fastball and strikes down Kailine who drops back to the bench. And that brings up Arm and killaboo.
- 2:20:21Second strikeout to Wilson. Here's killaboo, who hit a 3-2 pitch in the sixth inning off Ferguson Jenkins and homered into left field seats, scoring Kailine ahead of it.
- 2:20:30But the fifth and sixth runs of the ballgame have been six home runs, three by each team.
- 2:20:37First ball is fastball in and of its chin at killaboo, perhaps reminding him that he did hit a home run last time off. A gentle reminder.
- 2:20:47The American League leads because when they hit their home runs, they've always had a man on base. That's the only difference.
- 2:20:53Another fastball and he blew that one right by killaboo. One ball, one strike.
- 2:20:59Aaron in Clemente hit bears with nobody on, bench with one on.
- 2:21:06There's a breaking pitch, but it misses its two balls, one strike. Frank Robinson, Reggie Jackson and killaboo have all hit two on homers for the American League.
- 2:21:18And that's the difference, six to four in the last of the eight.
- 2:21:22Two on count, killaboo, fastball, ground ball, set up their base, charges goes to second base for one, the throwback to first, has to double play.
- 2:21:33Got no one, hits the errors and none left, and we go to the last gap for the National League, the ninth inning, with a score at the end of eight.
- 2:21:40The American League, sixth for National League four.
- 2:21:43The Retail Clerk's International Association has in its ranks many thousands of teenage store workers who through their union enjoy good working conditions.
- 2:21:53They know that to attain some objectives both for themselves and their country, they need clear heads and healthy bodies.
- 2:21:59The Retail Clerk's Union urges the youth of America to avoid harmful drug habits, and they register to vote so they can make vital contributions to next year's election.
- 2:22:08This message from the Retail Clerk's International Association, Washington, D.C. 2006.
- 2:22:14All right, my boy, we'll see how great this chalet dry look is. We'll test it on the Frankenheimer monster.
- 2:22:23First test the adjustable valve for the control he needs now.
- 2:22:28I think he likes it. Yes, look at the test. Oh, natural, strong. Amazing.
- 2:22:37It's a little, I look, he looks almost human except for the python that matches.
- 2:22:44Sandy Kofax with Jim Simpson as we're back here in Detroit for the top of the ninth inning.
- 2:22:50The National League trailing by two runs, their last chance, their last three outs, try and get back into this ball game.
- 2:22:58They've won eight in a row and if not in this inning, that'll be the end of the winning streak.
- 2:23:04Well, Sandy, that blew Brock out on deck, which would seem to indicate that Willie Stardale, who came into the ball game in those 30-hole months on 87 RBI's,
- 2:23:12who was standing on Declan's sandals, rounded back to the fifth of the eighth inning, will not bat and Brock will bat.
- 2:23:20Jim, I think you're in a situation here where you don't need the long ball anymore.
- 2:23:25The home run isn't going to help you and Brock Anderson, well with the man who's possibly got the best chance of becoming a base runner.
- 2:23:31Lou Brock's speed, his goatee, hit the ball on the ground or hit the ball somewhere.
- 2:23:36Brock, he's looking for the base runner. He needs two runs, not one.
- 2:23:39Well, at your left-hander, the Brock left-hander who is hitting 347 on the air from the St. Louis Cardinals.
- 2:23:45Off-fielder, swings and fouls the first pitch back to the screen.
- 2:23:49Speaking of the 1968 World Series, Brock and 67 against Boston and 68 against Detroit simply terrorized the opposing catchers.
- 2:24:01And when the Cardinals have the Tigers down three games to one for the first time that anybody can remember, freehand throughout Lou Brock.
- 2:24:10And from there on, the whole series turned around.
- 2:24:13Thrive to bonus layout, loaded Jim, left-hander throw to first base, just does half a speedy Lou Brock.
- 2:24:24That ball hit the plate and as a result went directly to Lou.
- 2:24:27It's shy, it's Lou had gotten the ball down, he had a good chance of beating it, but Mickey made a good play.
- 2:24:33Charged off the mound very quickly, got under that ball, made a very strong, accurate throw to the inside of the baseline.
- 2:24:40Now you can feel this tension build up six to four, two outs away.
- 2:24:43The American League is from breaking the eight-game losing streak.
- 2:24:47Rollich, the Detroit boys, fires the passenger.
- 2:24:50While the Chicago Cubs do fouls it away.
- 2:24:52Rollich trying to save it for bite of blue.
- 2:24:55Jim and Undeck is Johnny Bench, who's been Mr. Hero lately for the National League.
- 2:25:00So if catchers can get on, Bench would love to be able to hit with a chance to tie this one.
- 2:25:06But out of mind, obviously Rollich wants to keep Kessinger off the flyers of all the right field.
- 2:25:12Kailiom then plenty of time.
- 2:25:13Simply he's got it in right center field and has it to do away.
- 2:25:17And Johnny Bench becomes the last hope for the National League.
- 2:25:20Bench, Homer, with Stardulon in the second inning,
- 2:25:26books Robinson Roth him with a great play going to his left in the fourth.
- 2:25:30Then he attempted a bottom of seventh, which brought in Robinson and then probably single-buyed Brooks in the seventh inning.
- 2:25:36Johnny Bench of Cincinnati, last year's most valuable player against Mickey Rollich of Detroit.
- 2:25:41Could be the last batter in the 42nd annual All-Star Game.
- 2:25:45Could be the end of an eight-game winning streak for the National League.
- 2:25:48He takes a strike at the knees from Mickey Rollich.
- 2:25:52Six-one, seven-it's, nor is it for the American League.
- 2:25:54Four-one, five-it's, nor is it for the National League.
- 2:25:56There have been a record tying six-one runs in the game.
- 2:26:00Rollich backs off the fifth on the curve.
- 2:26:02Well, Brooks Robinson says, I've got it.
- 2:26:04I've got to mound.
- 2:26:05He's right as the pitcher's bound.
- 2:26:06How does he know he can make this one?
- 2:26:08The final score.
- 2:26:13The American League sixth, the National League four,
- 2:26:17and will have a recap of the night action in just a moment.
- 2:26:21Summer's here and so is summer travel.
- 2:26:24If you're like most of us, you're using your car more than ever.
- 2:26:27And your tires are getting a harder workout than ever because of those hot roads which can hurt.
- 2:26:32It's a good time for you to take a hard look at your tires and make certain they're all they should be.
- 2:26:36If they're not, it's best not to fool around.
- 2:26:39Come on into your Phillips 66 station and get the tires of a built-for performance.
- 2:26:43Phillips Custom PGB 66 tires.
- 2:26:46These wide-belted tires are made with two flies to polyester cord and two belt flies to fiberglass
- 2:26:52to reinforce and stabilize the tread element.
- 2:26:55That adds up to long mileage and durability.
- 2:26:58And you can get them now at the Phillips 66 station nearest you
- 2:27:01the same place you get free for the muddy gasoline performance.
- 2:27:04Stop in tomorrow for the hard performance products today's cars need.
- 2:27:09At Phillips 66, its performance, let's count.
- 2:27:12Well, static, oh, back.
- 2:27:14The American League did it.
- 2:27:16Taylor was a very happy American League team that left the field.
- 2:27:19I think you don't think too much about the All-Star Games for a while
- 2:27:25as long as the series seems to be going back and forth.
- 2:27:28You win one and the other league wins one, but after losing eight straights,
- 2:27:31they had to really want to win this one tonight and they did.
- 2:27:35They had good power.
- 2:27:36They got their runs out of the home run.
- 2:27:38They hit the ball out of the ballpark and they got the better pitching.
- 2:27:42The National League got two runs in the second inning on the one bad pitch that blew Maid to bench
- 2:27:47that he hit out, but other than that, the American League pitching, I think,
- 2:27:51was just a little bit better than that of the National League.
- 2:27:53They didn't walk as many.
- 2:27:55They didn't seem to get into as much trouble.
- 2:27:57And I think that's the story of the ballgame tonight.
- 2:28:02We'll continue with our All-Star pulse game roundup in just a minute.
- 2:28:07Ready on the clock.
- 2:28:09Golf. We're here at the filming of a TV commercial in which a man will shave
- 2:28:12in less than 20 seconds to test the Gillette's Technetic razor.
- 2:28:15Fast, baby.
- 2:28:16No razor can guarantee it'll never cut you, but Technetic has made to reduce the risk.
- 2:28:2010 seconds.
- 2:28:21Technetic is specially designed for fewer nicks or cuts.
- 2:28:2315 seconds.
- 2:28:24And that's it.
- 2:28:2516.8 seconds.
- 2:28:27A good close shave while a nick or cut in the reverse.
- 2:28:30Yeah, that Technetic works great.
- 2:28:32Watch for this commercial on TV.
- 2:28:34Proof that Gillette Technetic is tough on your beard, not on your face.
- 2:28:38The many thousands of teenagers or members of the Retail Clerks International Association
- 2:28:42know that their overall well-being is enhanced by the good-working conditions
- 2:28:46achieved by their union.
- 2:28:48And oh, too, that's what they sound objective for themselves and their country.
- 2:28:51They must work with clear heads and healthy bodies.
- 2:28:54The Retail Clerks Union urges the youth of America to avoid harmful drugs
- 2:28:58and to register the vote in next year's election.
- 2:29:01This message from the Retail Clerks International Association, Washington, D.C.
- 2:29:0520006.
- 2:29:07Well, part of Blue, who gave us three runs through the first three innings that he worked,
- 2:29:13turns out to be the winning pitcher.
- 2:29:16In his first American League, all stars started.
- 2:29:19Doc Ellis, who started and was very effective in the first two innings, fell below those four runs
- 2:29:25in the third inning, scored on homeruns on Mammoth Blast by Reggie Jackson,
- 2:29:30and a long home run to life by Frank Robinson.
- 2:29:32And that put the American League in front of the state four to three,
- 2:29:35and Doc Ellis becomes the losing pitcher.
- 2:29:38And Sandy, it was said it was the hitters ballpark and three home runs by each squad.
- 2:29:43And as we said, the big difference being that when the American League hit theirs,
- 2:29:47there was always a man on bit.
- 2:29:49Sure, I think if any pitcher is going to get into trouble, it's going to be with Wank and the long ball.
- 2:29:55And today we had six of them, it's high to record.
- 2:29:57It looked like in the third inning when Doc Ellis got into trouble.
- 2:30:01It looked like he got a couple of his breaking balls up a little bit.
- 2:30:04And when you've got hitters of this caliber on the ball club, they don't miss high breaking balls.
- 2:30:12A fellow who's not as good a hitter, he may foul it off or pop it up or something like that occasionally.
- 2:30:18But the good hitters, when you make a mistake on them, they hurt you.
- 2:30:21I think that's what happened tonight.
- 2:30:23There were a couple of mistakes in the ball game by the pitchers.
- 2:30:26Not a lot of them, a few, but every time one was made, the hitters jumped on it
- 2:30:30and hit the ball very hard somewhere.
- 2:30:32Well, you know, the fans are always arguing which is the better league, Sandy.
- 2:30:35And the American League, I'm sure all of their fans and the American League will say,
- 2:30:38well, out of the last three World Series, the American League has won two of them.
- 2:30:42And now we won an all-star game after eight straight by the National League.
- 2:30:45And let's give credit where credit is due in that.
- 2:30:48Those two World Series, one of the last three years, were by the Baltimore Orioles.
- 2:30:52And the right-winning manager, Waz O'Weaver of Baltimore and Palmer and Cuellar of Baltimore
- 2:30:57did a fantastic job in the first Mickey Lillich of Detroit.
- 2:31:01Rounded up, gave up the home run, the Climete in the eighth inning,
- 2:31:04but saved the ball game for the American League.
- 2:31:07We'd like to thank Commissioner Bowie Keown, Tom Dawson, the director of TV and radio activities
- 2:31:11for the office of the commissioner, directly the director of public relations, Charles Feeney,
- 2:31:15the president of the National League, and Joe Conan, the president of the American League.
- 2:31:19And of course, our host here at Detroit, at Tiger Stadium,
- 2:31:22have been James Campbell, executive vice president and general manager.
- 2:31:26Now, Middlesworth, director of public relations.
- 2:31:29And we'll be back with more highlights from the night's all-star game right after this message.
- 2:31:33It's a fact.
- 2:31:35New Cricket from Climete offers more kinds of new cars than anyone else,
- 2:31:38including dusters, satellite, road runners, jewelry, price groups,
- 2:31:42and now a new entry in the subcompact field.
- 2:31:45The little car that can.
- 2:31:47New Cricket from Climete.
- 2:31:49Coming soon.
- 2:31:51High-speed Climete.
- 2:31:53Coming soon.
- 2:31:55New Cricket from Climete has four doors and gives you family-size rules,
- 2:32:00gives you good gas economy,
- 2:32:02and things you can't get in some other import-sized cars like power disc brakes in front.
- 2:32:07Standard.
- 2:32:08Big 14-cubic foot trunk.
- 2:32:11And Cricket is Chrysler engineered Chrysler built.
- 2:32:14Cricket.
- 2:32:15Only 1915 manufacturers suggested retail price.
- 2:32:20Excluding state and local taxes, destination and suggested dealer new car preparation charges.
- 2:32:25And selected Climete dealer.
- 2:32:32Jim Simpson with Sandy Co-Fax, the 42nd All-Star Game is over,
- 2:32:37and we'll now get down to statistics, which is the law of most baseball fans.
- 2:32:41Overall now, the National League still leads the American League, 23-18.
- 2:32:46But the eight-game winning streak of the National League has been broken.
- 2:32:49They had won 12 of the last 13, not counting a 1-1 tie back in 1961.
- 2:32:53And the American League has come back to win this game by the score of 64.
- 2:32:57And it is obvious to us that who is the most valuable player is going to be quite some question,
- 2:33:04because no one has appeared yet to win that most valuable prize.
- 2:33:09Harmon Kilibourg is out on the field, but Kilibourg, of course, is a late-hitting replacement.
- 2:33:13He did put the game out of sight with a two-run homer.
- 2:33:16And Harmon Kilibourg is now out on the field and ready to talk with Lindsay Nelson.
- 2:33:21And the commissioner of baseball, Paul Coon, is also down there.
- 2:33:25And in a moment we'll be going down to Lindsay.
- 2:33:27We haven't heard from Lindsay all evening long, but he has been down there waiting to talk
- 2:33:31to representatives of either the American or National League, but this has been the American League day.
- 2:33:36So let's go down and we can to Lindsay Nelson.
- 2:33:39The All-Star Game tonight is not, they say, right now.
- 2:33:43He's come out on the field, but evidently they're having trouble.
- 2:33:46Now you can hear in the background our television audio to which Lindsay is also linked into,
- 2:33:51saying that they're having some trouble finding the most valuable player.
- 2:33:56So, Sandy, we'll just have to stand in the dark as is everybody in the station.
- 2:34:00In the stadium. Who is the most valuable player? That'll make some reading tomorrow.
- 2:34:04Jim, I'm not sure that maybe it isn't Harmon Kilibourg.
- 2:34:08You ended up with a two-run lead in the ballgame.
- 2:34:11Harmon hit the last of the two-run home runs that provided the winning margin.
- 2:34:16Maybe they've decided that it is going to be Harmon.
- 2:34:19It's hard to say. Each of the offensive players hit two-run home runs, so it's hard to pick one.
- 2:34:25Let's go down the field.
- 2:34:27Well, I'm having to go in there. This has been a pretty good ballpark for you.
- 2:34:30I think it's a good park for most shitters.
- 2:34:32And tonight was kind of an exceptionally different night for this ballpark.
- 2:34:37This wind generally doesn't blow like this here.
- 2:34:41Mr. Keon, what would you have to say to Harmon Kilibourg?
- 2:34:43I'd have to say I'm not very surprised to see him hit a home run in this ballpark.
- 2:34:46He's the only man who's ever hit a ball over that roof over there.
- 2:34:49And that's a pretty good shot. Is that one of your longest ever?
- 2:34:52Oh, I think so. That's definitely one.
- 2:34:54How do you feel about the American League now?
- 2:34:57Some evening things up, getting a win after eight-stage.
- 2:35:00Well, we're real happy about it because it's been a long time since we've been able to beat the National League.
- 2:35:05I think I did a lot for it.
- 2:35:07Harmon, whether you are or not the most valuable player we don't know,
- 2:35:10but you played a tremendous ballgame. Congratulations.
- 2:35:12Thank you, Red.
- 2:35:13Thank you very much.
- 2:35:14Now let's go back up to it.
- 2:35:16Well, Johnny, there's your answer.
- 2:35:18They don't know whether or not he is the most valuable player either.
- 2:35:21In a game such as this with such fine performances, for example,
- 2:35:25I would imagine the most valuable player would come from the winning team,
- 2:35:28but fine performances like by Palmer, Cuiar, Wolditch,
- 2:35:32Reggie Jackson with that mammoth 2-1 blast,
- 2:35:35with Harmon Chillebours 2-1 almost, Frank Robinson 2-1 almost,
- 2:35:39to put him out in front.
- 2:35:41There's a question whether or not, you know, just who is the most valuable player?
- 2:35:47See, I think we may have found out.
- 2:35:51I think we may get a chance to hear from Lindsay again before this is over
- 2:35:56about who the most valuable player was.
- 2:35:58Well, we can wait here all night, or stand in, perhaps we'll have to,
- 2:36:02but this broadcast has been authorized in the broadcast slides
- 2:36:05granted by the Commissioner of Baseball solely for the intended amount of listening audience.
- 2:36:08Any publication we broadcast, or the use of the descriptions,
- 2:36:11and counts of the game without the express written consent of the Commissioner of Baseball,
- 2:36:14is prohibited.
- 2:36:15The only thing we can't tell you is who was the most valuable player in this game.
- 2:36:19They're not done by voters or press writers upstairs, and there are many in attendance,
- 2:36:23and they've got a poll that, and I'm sure the vote is going to be closed.
- 2:36:26So that's one thing you'll have to read tomorrow.
- 2:36:28If 42nd All-Star game is over, 6-4 the final score,
- 2:36:32the American League has won after eight consecutive losses.
- 2:36:36And the night's game has been brought to you by the Retail Clutch International Association,
- 2:36:41dedicated exclusively to the interest of store workers,

- 2:36:51at Phillips 66, its performance has count.

- 2:36:57and by the Orange Illinois Forest Products Division,
- 2:37:00our leading producer of corrugated packages.
- 2:37:03The final score again was 6-4 in favor of the American League,
- 2:37:07and we do have words of our valuable player, Frank Robinson,
- 2:37:11of the Baltimore Orioles who hit the 2-1 homer that put the American League in front
- 2:37:15and won the ball game for the American League.
- 2:37:18Len Dillon has been our producer tonight in the boat,
- 2:37:22and Jim Howard has been our audio engineer.
- 2:37:25Now this is Jim Simpson with Sandy Kofack saying thanks for listening, and again,
