- 1:58Speaker 2: The Ten Commandments In our last story, we learned about
- 2:03Speaker 2: God's continued provision as he quenched Israel's thirst for water.
- 2:08Speaker 2: We learned about God's protection as he gave them victory
- 2:12Speaker 2: over their first battle against the Amalekites. Now we will
- 2:16Speaker 2: learn about God's continued blessing over his people and his
- 2:19Speaker 2: promise to never leave them as he gives them the
- 2:22Speaker 2: Ten Commandments and instructions for the tabernacle. As inspired by
- 2:27Speaker 2: the book of Exodus.
- 2:30Speaker 3: Hello, I'm Jack Graham with today's episode of The Bible
- 2:33Speaker 3: in a Year. In yesterday's episode, we learned of the
- 2:37Speaker 3: first military victory of the Israelites. God was giving them
- 2:40Speaker 3: further proof that there was no limit to what they
- 2:43Speaker 3: could do as long as they trusted in Him and
- 2:47Speaker 3: His power. Today, we'll join them in the wilderness, once again,
- 2:50Speaker 3: three months since they exited the land of Egypt and
- 2:54Speaker 3: escaped Pharaoh. They've been through a lot already, And today
- 2:58Speaker 3: we'll hear God once again confirm His promises to them.
- 3:03Speaker 3: They are about to be a holy nation, set apart
- 3:06Speaker 3: from all others. We will see how God gives them
- 3:10Speaker 3: and us rules for living, the Ten Commandments. Let's listen
- 3:14Speaker 3: now to today's story.
- 3:19Speaker 2: Three months had passed since the exodus from Egypt. God
- 3:23Speaker 2: had brought the people through hunger, thirst, and battle. The
- 3:27Speaker 2: galvanizing force of God united the people of Israel. They
- 3:31Speaker 2: had made it to the wilderness of Sinai, a grazing
- 3:35Speaker 2: countryside lush and uninhabited. There they camped at the base
- 3:40Speaker 2: of the mountain. There God called Moses and beckoned him
- 3:44Speaker 2: to the top of the mountain. God spoke to Moses
- 3:47Speaker 2: on top of the mountain and said, Tell the people
- 3:50Speaker 2: of Israel that I have bore them on eagles' wings
- 3:53Speaker 2: to save them from the Egyptians. If you obey my
- 3:57Speaker 2: commands and keep my promises, you will be my treasured
- 4:00Speaker 2: possession among all people groups. For all the earth is mine,
- 4:05Speaker 2: and you shall be my holy nation. So Moses went
- 4:10Speaker 2: down and told the elders of God's promises. They consecrated
- 4:14Speaker 2: themselves and flocked to the base of the mountain to
- 4:17Speaker 2: worship God. On the morning of the third day, thunder
- 4:21Speaker 2: emanated from the peak of the mountain. and lightning lit
- 4:24Speaker 2: up the skies surrounding the top. A thick cloud surrounded Sinai,
- 4:30Speaker 2: and a bellowing trumpet could be heard from the top.
- 4:33Speaker 2: The people trembled in awe and fear. Smoke could be
- 4:38Speaker 2: seen at a distance, and Moses knew God had come
- 4:41Speaker 2: in fire. The mountain shook, and the sound of the
- 4:45Speaker 2: trumpet grew louder and louder. Moses began to speak, but
- 4:50Speaker 2: was interrupted by thunder. Moses took a deep breath, looked
- 4:54Speaker 2: back at the people, and ascended up the mountain. There
- 4:59Speaker 2: God spoke with great power and authority. With lightning surrounding
- 5:04Speaker 2: the mountain and the earth shaking, God poured forth his commandments.
- 5:08Speaker 2: He spoke, saying, I am the Lord your God. I
- 5:13Speaker 2: am the one who delivered you out of slavery from
- 5:16Speaker 2: the land of Egypt. You shall have no other gods
- 5:20Speaker 2: but me. You shall not make any idols, no carved
- 5:25Speaker 2: images of anything that is below or above the earth.
- 5:28Speaker 2: Do not bow to them or serve them, for I
- 5:32Speaker 2: alone am your God. I am a jealous God, showing
- 5:36Speaker 2: myself to generations of those who hated me. But I
- 5:40Speaker 2: show steadfast love always, and show love to those who
- 5:45Speaker 2: keep me and my commandments. You shall not take my
- 5:49Speaker 2: name in vain. For I am the Lord, and I
- 5:52Speaker 2: will hold him guilty if he takes my name in vain.
- 5:57Speaker 2: Remember the Sabbath day. Keep it special and holy. Labor
- 6:02Speaker 2: and work hard for six days, but on the seventh
- 6:05Speaker 2: day you should rest. Sabbath and rest in for me.
- 6:10Speaker 2: Enjoy me. You nor your children, servants, or livestock should labor.
- 6:16Speaker 2: For I created all things in six days, and on
- 6:19Speaker 2: the seventh I enjoyed the fruit of my labor. Honor
- 6:23Speaker 2: your father and your mother. If you do, your days
- 6:27Speaker 2: shall be long in the land I have given you.
- 6:30Speaker 2: You shall not murder. You shall not commit adultery. You
- 6:34Speaker 2: shall not steal. You shall not lie against your neighbor
- 6:38Speaker 2: and bear false witness. You shall not covet and seek
- 6:42Speaker 2: after your neighbor's possessions or relationships. God's commands held weight,
- 6:48Speaker 2: and the people feared and respected him enough to listen,
- 6:51Speaker 2: for there was still thunder echoing from the mountain. It
- 6:55Speaker 2: was always God's desire to dwell with his children. Since
- 6:59Speaker 2: the garden, he desired to walk through life with those
- 7:02Speaker 2: he loved. So he told Moses to have them build
- 7:05Speaker 2: a tabernacle so he might live among them, a holy
- 7:09Speaker 2: place for the Spirit of the Lord to dwell among
- 7:12Speaker 2: his people. So the Israelites did as the Lord said
- 7:17Speaker 2: and built him a tabernacle, a tent for him to
- 7:20Speaker 2: travel alongside them in the wilderness. Though God was not
- 7:24Speaker 2: confined to a tent, this would be a holy place
- 7:27Speaker 2: for him to meet with them and be in their midst.
- 7:30Speaker 2: The tabernacle was constructed with great care and instruction. It
- 7:35Speaker 2: included the Ark of the Covenant, mercy seat, table of showbread,
- 7:39Speaker 2: the golden lampstand, the altar of burnt offering, the altar
- 7:44Speaker 2: of incense, and the bronze layer. All these would serve
- 7:48Speaker 2: as a picture of God's faithfulness, and each would represent
- 7:51Speaker 2: an aspect of their relationship with the Lord.
- 7:56Speaker 3: We open today's reading with the Israelites arriving at Sinai.
- 8:00Speaker 3: It's been three months since they escaped Pharaoh and his armies.
- 8:04Speaker 3: God's presence and provisions was never far away. He provided water.
- 8:09Speaker 3: He sent bread from heaven and quail for them to eat.
- 8:12Speaker 3: and God delivered them in a ferocious battle against the Amalekites.
- 8:17Speaker 3: Now they've arrived at a beautiful place, a lush pasture
- 8:20Speaker 3: near the foot of a mountain. It was time to
- 8:22Speaker 3: rest for a while. God gave Moses a message to
- 8:26Speaker 3: remind the people of all that he had done for them,
- 8:29Speaker 3: how he had delivered them from the Egyptians, carrying them
- 8:31Speaker 3: on eagles' wings to safety. It's a beautiful and powerful message.
- 8:36Speaker 3: The promises he's made to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob were
- 8:40Speaker 3: surely known to these people But it had been many
- 8:43Speaker 3: generations by now, and God reminds them that they are
- 8:47Speaker 3: His chosen people, blessed in a very special way. But
- 8:52Speaker 3: this blessing was conditioned upon their trust and obedience. If
- 8:56Speaker 3: they followed His commands and kept the covenant relationship with Him,
- 8:59Speaker 3: they would be a holy nation, set apart from all others.
- 9:03Speaker 3: Moses delivered the message, and the people responded by flocking
- 9:07Speaker 3: to the mountain to worship. For all their past failures
- 9:12Speaker 3: and grumblings and unfaithfulness, their response was exactly what God
- 9:17Speaker 3: desires and demands. Our right response to God, His promises,
- 9:21Speaker 3: His provision is gratitude and praise, worship and adoration. God
- 9:28Speaker 3: was going to come down and the people would hear
- 9:30Speaker 3: Him speak with a voice like thunder. But we also
- 9:33Speaker 3: heard a reminder of God's holiness and purity and how
- 9:36Speaker 3: in our own power we cannot approach Him. God wants
- 9:40Speaker 3: his children to draw near, but because of his sin,
- 9:44Speaker 3: we are separated from God. It is only through the
- 9:47Speaker 3: blood of Jesus Christ, God's son, who would die on
- 9:50Speaker 3: the cross for our sins and rise again, that we
- 9:53Speaker 3: are able now to approach the throne of God, the
- 9:55Speaker 3: presence of God in his holiness with boldness. The foot
- 10:00Speaker 3: of the mountain was as close as the people could come,
- 10:03Speaker 3: but Moses and Aaron were called up higher, up to
- 10:06Speaker 3: the top of the mountain to receive a very special
- 10:08Speaker 3: message that was to become the guiding set of principles
- 10:12Speaker 3: for God's people in every generation. There on top of
- 10:16Speaker 3: the mountain, God gave Moses the 10 commandments. rules for
- 10:20Speaker 3: a right relationship with God, God's law. The law of
- 10:25Speaker 3: God is so very important, so significant in the scripture.
- 10:30Speaker 3: This is the way we walk with God. This is
- 10:32Speaker 3: the way we have a relationship with God by keeping
- 10:36Speaker 3: his commandments. The 10 commandments have been given not only
- 10:40Speaker 3: to the Israelites, but for every generation. This is the
- 10:44Speaker 3: law of God and the law of God is vital
- 10:47Speaker 3: to our spiritual, physical, and emotional health. God instructed the
- 10:51Speaker 3: people to build a tabernacle to worship him. This dwelling
- 10:55Speaker 3: place for God on earth would represent God's presence with
- 10:58Speaker 3: his people, and the tabernacle would be carried everywhere they
- 11:02Speaker 3: would go on their long journey. This was not a
- 11:05Speaker 3: permanent home, but a temporary tent, a dwelling that would
- 11:09Speaker 3: one day be replaced when God's spirit would come upon
- 11:11Speaker 3: those who followed him through his son Jesus. Because now,
- 11:15Speaker 3: We are the permanent home of God. Too soon, though,
- 11:19Speaker 3: the people will turn and break the first commandment, and
- 11:22Speaker 3: that's what we'll hear about the next time. Dear God,
- 11:25Speaker 3: thank you for this important, vital passage of Scripture, reminding
- 11:30Speaker 3: us that you dwell among us, that your presence is
- 11:33Speaker 3: always near to us through Jesus Christ. May we worship
- 11:37Speaker 3: you and adore you always through your Son, Jesus Christ.
- 11:42Speaker 2: Amen.
