Latest / gasp! the pod / harry styles & his many coming outs
Transcript
- 0:00I mean, I wish someone could, like, count how many times I've
- 0:02said gay in this podcast, but sometimes there's no other word
- 0:05for the homosexuality that reeks from this man's music.
- 0:20Hey guys, welcome back to GASP the Pod, the podcast for the
- 0:25gays, the girls, and especially the gay girls.
- 0:28So a couple of weeks ago, Harry Styles did something that awoke
- 0:32Larry shippers from their deep slumber, from their hibernation.
- 0:37Everyone has woken up, OK? The ice has melted, spring has
- 0:40sprung, literally, and Harry Styles is out.
- 0:43At least he is out as not straight.
- 0:46This podcast is all about proving to you through examples
- 0:50why I think Harry Styles is literally out at this point.
- 0:55Harry appeared on SNL and much to literally everyone's
- 0:57surprise, actually addressed queerbaiting accusations.
- 1:01OK, it's been a few years since he's done kind of like any
- 1:05interview and during his monologue he countered these
- 1:08claims and arguably comes out as queer.
- 1:12I would argue he came out as queer and he said, quote, maybe
- 1:15you don't know everything about me dad.
- 1:18This was interpreted as a clear statement that he is queer
- 1:22because the only way you can like, say that you aren't queer
- 1:25baiting right is by being like, I'm queer.
- 1:28And that's pretty much what he told us to others and the media.
- 1:32Apparently this meant nothing about his sexuality and only
- 1:35that he was clearing up queer baiting rumors.
- 1:38Which again, doesn't make any sense to me because he says the
- 1:41reason why he's not queer baiting is not like oh he had
- 1:45good intent and whatever whatever he said maybe you don't
- 1:48know everything about me. Meaning maybe people didn't
- 1:51think that he was queer. AKA he's saying that's something
- 1:55that people don't know about him.
- 1:56It's just like A + B = C and if we can't do the math then stay
- 2:00out of pop culture I guess. Discourse surrounding this
- 2:03moment has spread like wildfire with many Harry Styles slash
- 2:06Larry shippers pointing out that this was actually just one of
- 2:10many, many times that Harry Styles has talked about his
- 2:13sexuality. Slash arguably come out of the
- 2:17closet with mainstream media not noticing again or like missing
- 2:21the point right On this episode, I'm going to dig into all of
- 2:25these moments about when he arguably came out through my own
- 2:29research through being a One Direction fan myself and
- 2:32noticing Larry with with my own eyes as it was literally
- 2:36happening. I'm also going to rate the
- 2:38strengths of each coming out in my opinion.
- 2:41And we're talking One Direction deep dive interviews, right?
- 2:44We're talking about Harry's individual music, his lyrics,
- 2:48clothing Harry Styles has worn before things he said on stage
- 2:53and in music and in symbolism. And we're going to get into it.
- 2:56Hopefully by the end of this episode you will learn and agree
- 3:00that Harry Styles is is queer. Let's go.
- 3:04By the way you guys, if you're not watching on video, I feel
- 3:07like I got the best Harry Styles shirt right now.
- 3:10Like I found this vintage shirt from the 70s and I just feel
- 3:14like it's the perfect Harry Styles.
- 3:16Sure, I usually try to like match the aesthetic of like the
- 3:19topic that I'm talking about in a podcast.
- 3:21And I also first episode with my haircut.
- 3:23Get rid of that old shit. Spring has sprung new me.
- 3:28Please subscribe on YouTube and Spotify, you guys, if you
- 3:30haven't already, wherever you're watching, please subscribe to
- 3:33that platform. I really want to monetize on
- 3:36YouTube and to be perfectly honest, this podcast is not
- 3:41making all of my rent and I really need it too.
- 3:45So it would really, really, really, really help me if you
- 3:48would subscribe on YouTube. And if you want to support
- 3:50monetarily, I have bonus content on Patreon and Spotify that's
- 3:54like bonus episodes. And even if you don't want to
- 3:56monetarily support, those episodes are fun.
- 4:00And I feel like a little bit more stripped back than this
- 4:02podcast is. I just released a deep dive into
- 4:06Exile and tolerate it. That is on Spotify and Patreon.
- 4:11Share the pod with your friends. Please let me know what you're
- 4:13liking, what you're not liking. If there's a Part 2 of an
- 4:15episode you really want, there's a guest you really want.
- 4:18Just like, let me know your feelings and thoughts.
- 4:21Let's get into now One Direction, old, old days of One
- 4:26Direction and these interviews, because I will say, say Harry
- 4:30Styles was super, super outspoken about this rumored
- 4:36relationship with Louie. Truly more than even some
- 4:40Gaylord stuff. And it's beyond that.
- 4:44Like the media completely, completely just doesn't validate
- 4:48it. And it's like people just have
- 4:50treated Larry Shipper so horribly.
- 4:52And I'm so sorry. Again, there's a difference
- 4:55between like being super toxic and weird and like being super
- 4:58gross about things. And then there's another with
- 5:00just like, noticing things that like people are actually saying.
- 5:03That's most of Larry's OK. I know that Louie has said that
- 5:07he's straight. Like, Harry has not ever said,
- 5:09oh, I'm straight. Louie apparently has.
- 5:13However, that was in 2014. And like before gay marriage was
- 5:17legal in America. Like, obviously they're not
- 5:19American. But the point is that that was a
- 5:22very different time. That could have been a cover up.
- 5:24And since then, Louis has talked about feeling uncomfortable,
- 5:27especially with like, his kid. I don't know, some of the things
- 5:31that he's reading. I can't imagine how being
- 5:33comfortable for your kid that you might be bisexual.
- 5:37But again, I'm not here to go into all of that.
- 5:39My point is that free Larry shippers, OK, that's my main
- 5:44point, free Larry shippers. But this episode's not really
- 5:46about Larry, however he comes up.
- 5:49I don't actually know the date of this interview, but this is
- 5:52one of the biggest moments, I think in my case, to show you
- 5:56that Harry Styles is out as queer or at least out as not
- 6:01straight. And I think that's the largest
- 6:03point in my thesis of this whole episode is that he is very
- 6:07adamant, Harry is very adamant about not labeling and going
- 6:12into too many details about his specific sexuality.
- 6:15That does not mean that he is not out as queer as like the
- 6:20umbrella of the queer community. And that is nuance that I don't
- 6:24think a lot of people, A, in the media or B, in the straight
- 6:29community understand where it's like, you can be out as like gay
- 6:34in general without labeling yourself and without saying what
- 6:38your label is. And I actually really appreciate
- 6:42that kind of activism. Let me know at the end of this
- 6:46episode if you think he's out as a specific identity or if you
- 6:49think he's out as just like not straight or if you don't think
- 6:51he's out at all. Let me know your thoughts.
- 6:54OK, so this first moment is like a one-on-one very low key.
- 7:00It's hard to tell if this is even an interview or if this is
- 7:03like a fan talking to Harry Styles.
- 7:06Low quality footage here. I don't even see the clip with
- 7:10the first question, but I do know that Harry says to this
- 7:14interviewer who's a woman. It seems like Harry says, quote,
- 7:17my first real crush was. And then he thinks about it,
- 7:21pauses and says Louis Tomlinson and looks really nervous when he
- 7:26says it. It's not a fucking joke.
- 7:29He's not smiling, he's not smirking.
- 7:32This looks really early One Direction, so probably
- 7:3420/12/2013, right? The fan or the interviewer says
- 7:38who? Now?
- 7:40This is a time where Harry could have said oh ha ha ha, I I was
- 7:44joking, right? No, he double downs and he says
- 7:48Louis Tomlinson and slightly smiles.
- 7:51Again, it's not like a joke. He's not fucking laughing.
- 7:54And you can tell when someone's joking.
- 7:57You know, like we have media literacy, at least most of us do
- 8:00here in this crowd and fan or the interviewer says, how does
- 8:05he feel about you? Again, another option for Harry
- 8:08to be like oh he doesn't like me, It's a joke.
- 8:12But Nope, Harry says it's mutual.
- 8:14We've discussed it. Now at this point the media is
- 8:18just being homophobic by not viewing this as literally Harry
- 8:22being interested in Louis and them being together.
- 8:24Like at this point it's completely completely homophobic
- 8:28for the media to assume that when men talk about liking each
- 8:31other it's always a fucking joke.
- 8:33Because none of this seems like a joke.
- 8:36It is the most candid response. I'll show pictures of this in
- 8:40the YouTube, but like, it is so clear that this is not fucking
- 8:46funny and he looks very vulnerable when he says it.
- 8:50And I just don't know how you deny this.
- 8:51Then the fan or the interviewer says, yeah, that's beautiful
- 8:55Harry, with complete sincerity, which I really appreciate.
- 8:59And then Harry smiles, like slightly.
- 9:01It's not like he's laughing. If he was not actually
- 9:05interested in Louis, why would he?
- 9:10There's no explanation. This is one of the biggest
- 9:13coming outs I think he's had. I'm going to rate this like a 10
- 9:17out of 10. This is a 10 out of 10 coming
- 9:20out. You are saying your first crush
- 9:22is a man. You have a crush on him, and
- 9:25then you discussed it together. That is just direct telling
- 9:30someone that you're interested in a man.
- 9:32And again, coming out does not have to be telling us your exact
- 9:37sexuality. And I think that's what a lot of
- 9:38people are hung up on. That's labeling yourself.
- 9:42Coming out means you're coming out is not straight under any
- 9:45umbrella of queerness. Anyways, on to another old One
- 9:49Direction coming out possible moment.
- 9:52OK, this one's called Are you and Louie dating?
- 9:55A fan is asking Harry, it seems like at a meet and greet.
- 9:58Again, this looks like a very old video, so probably around
- 10:0120/12/2013. The fan asks Harry are you and
- 10:04Louis dating? Harry does not laugh.
- 10:09He does not like even smile at this yet he just nods shyly.
- 10:16He's like the fan says you are. I figured.
- 10:21And then Harry smiles again, No laugh.
- 10:24He's just smiling, and he looks shy about it.
- 10:29I don't know how people deny this stuff.
- 10:31It's as a galer when we're already so used to picking up on
- 10:36like things that maybe the mainstream audience would not
- 10:39understand. These are things that the
- 10:41mainstream audience should understand because it's like,
- 10:46there's nothing to misconstrue here.
- 10:50He just said they're dating again, not a joke.
- 10:53So I'm going to rate this coming out strength a 10 out of 10
- 10:57because you just said you're dating a boy and it doesn't seem
- 11:00like you're joking. And I would argue, and I know a
- 11:03lot of people think that like real people can't queer bait.
- 11:06I do think real people can queer bait.
- 11:09I know, I know hot take. But again, this podcast is all
- 11:13about hot takes. Like I'm sure you guys have
- 11:15disagreed on many things I've said on this podcast because
- 11:19that's just what life's about. Like I don't want people to
- 11:21always agree with me. It's just discourse.
- 11:23It's just my opinion. And like it's not big things
- 11:26that we're disagreeing about like homophobia, right?
- 11:29ANYWAYS, I do think real people can queer bait when they are
- 11:33tied to like public work and art.
- 11:36So like that does have to do with famous people because their
- 11:40individuality is also their brand and their marketing.
- 11:43And that's not really the same for like people that are not in
- 11:47the public space, right? So like Harry Styles as a
- 11:50person, Taylor Swift as a person, like Beyoncé as a
- 11:53person, they are brands within themselves.
- 11:56And so, like, when you are like, attaching something to you, you
- 12:01have to realize, like, what that gives off to the public, like in
- 12:04a way that individual people do not have to worry about.
- 12:07And so I do think there's an added expectation for people in
- 12:12the public eye to not queer bait and not, like, do things out of
- 12:17attention and money that, like, real people would not be making
- 12:20money off of pretending to be gay.
- 12:22Do you see what I'm saying? In fact, we would probably lose
- 12:24money for pretending to be gay, but famous people would, right?
- 12:28So and like maybe they would also lose money, but they would
- 12:31also maybe try to gain gay money.
- 12:33That's maybe a whole other conversation.
- 12:35The point is that I think if Harry is straight, which I do
- 12:39not think he is, I think if Harry is straight and he said he
- 12:44was dating Louie even though he was joking the entire time, I
- 12:47think that is fucked up and queer baiting.
- 12:50And his SNL monologue, why this isn't coming out is because he
- 12:53says the reason why he's not queer baiting is because we
- 12:56don't know everything about him, meaning he can't queer bait if
- 13:01he's actually queer T So anyways, I'm going to get that
- 13:05at 10, at 10, that's so much confirmation.
- 13:07It's crazy. Moving on to another One
- 13:09Direction interview. This is an interview with all of
- 13:12the boys. It's a little bit later in their
- 13:14career. It might be like 2014, I can't
- 13:17really tell, but it's called the four play game, which is so
- 13:20weird. But and also like it's weird
- 13:22asking like young guys like sexual questions like this is
- 13:26weird objectively for an interviewer to ask.
- 13:29They answered them. So the interviewer asks 4 traits
- 13:32you look for in a lady Liam RIB says female.
- 13:37That's a good trait. Harry smiles and says not that
- 13:41important again, like there's nothing for me to even add to
- 13:45this because that's these are so gay.
- 13:48It's like not even funny. I'm going to have to say that's
- 13:51like a nine out of 10. And again, when I'm rating these
- 13:54coming outs, it's not that I think that any of them are not
- 13:56confirmation that he's gay, but it's more so like how outward
- 14:00could you be, right? I do believe that all of these
- 14:03are coming outs because coming outs don't look the same.
- 14:05Coming outs are not all announcements.
- 14:06Coming outs are just like aligning yourself with the queer
- 14:10community to communicate something about yourself.
- 14:13That's what I believe in coming out is.
- 14:14I do believe most these are coming outs or at least like gay
- 14:18hints, like Easter eggs. Then the last One Direction
- 14:22interview is don't knock it till you try it.
- 14:25And guys I also just want to add like I was a fucking huge One
- 14:29Direction fan but I was obsessed with Niall and maybe because we
- 14:32were both blonde now I won't even say that like looking back
- 14:36that even like makes sense for me.
- 14:38But I like truly was like no no one else gets it.
- 14:41Like I will marry him like he is made for me lol.
- 14:45Anyways in this interview, this is like a group interview.
- 14:49Louis says we'll get back to you on who Niall is sleeping with
- 14:52And again they're talking about sex and sexuality.
- 14:55Liam says I think we need to go outside the box.
- 14:58The interviewer says a man. Liam looks at Louis mind you and
- 15:03says a man let's go a man because all the guys are like
- 15:07really supportive of them. You can like really tell.
- 15:10And then Niall says don't go a man, I had bad taste because
- 15:14what the fuck Nile. And then Harry says hey don't
- 15:18knock it till you try it. Have you tried it Harry?
- 15:21I mean these were gayer moments during One Direction than
- 15:25actually like the next like 5 years.
- 15:29It's kind of crazy. I'm going to say that's that's
- 15:32like an 8.5 out of 10 guys. OK, Now we're going to get into
- 15:36a section of like interviews where he did a lot of interviews
- 15:40when he went solo, kind of like in between 2017 all the way up
- 15:45until like 2022. OK.
- 15:47These are interviews that like are mostly surrounding his like
- 15:51what he was wearing. I literally had to stop filming
- 15:54you guys and recorded TikTok because I just found out that
- 15:57Travis Kelce was going back with the Chiefs girl.
- 16:00What we know how that's going to work out with Taylor and him.
- 16:04Like we know what the blogs are getting ready to say.
- 16:07Oh, he can't balance at all. Wedding planning's called off.
- 16:11OK, I'm back. So we're about to get into the
- 16:14interviews of Harry talking about his sexuality.
- 16:18Usually the interviews start bringing up his sexuality
- 16:21because this is the era when he goes solo.
- 16:23Music video is literally men and women half naked dancing around
- 16:28him. Like it's very clear that he's
- 16:30communicating that he sleeps with both men and women.
- 16:33I know that people like don't view that as a coming out.
- 16:36But like that is though, like straight people don't actually
- 16:39do that. Like straight men don't usually
- 16:42do that in their music videos. You know, this is around the
- 16:45time 2017 where he's like going out on his own and he's wearing
- 16:50more like feminine, quote, UN quote outfits and like kind of
- 16:55like dressing in a more fluid way.
- 16:58And people are like saying that he's queer baiting, right?
- 17:02So this interview from 2017 from Bizarre, when he's asked if he
- 17:06labels himself, Harry says, no, I've never felt the need to
- 17:10really. No, I don't feel like it's
- 17:13something I've ever felt like I have to explain about myself.
- 17:16Now many people are going to view that, straight people are
- 17:20going to view that and maybe even hate people as like, if
- 17:23anything, the opposite of a coming out.
- 17:25But if anything I feel like straight people are so quick to
- 17:29be like I'm straight. And him being so intentional
- 17:33about not wanting to label himself is not the same thing as
- 17:38saying he's not queer. Label is saying that you are
- 17:43asexuality. Like some people use queer and
- 17:46gay as their actual label, but like, being not straight and
- 17:49being part of the queer community and being like a
- 17:52little guy and being gay, right, is a whole overarching
- 17:58community. And that's not necessarily a
- 18:00label. And so I feel like if anything,
- 18:03he's saying he doesn't feel the need to label himself and he
- 18:06doesn't need to explain it. And that means to me like, oh,
- 18:12I'm not straight. And so I'm going to label this
- 18:14low 2 out of 10, but I still feel like there's a queerness in
- 18:18a part of this. And I will say, like, I really
- 18:21like Harry. I like a lot of his music.
- 18:24I wasn't really passionate about the fact that his ticket sales
- 18:27are so expensive this year and it felt like he wasn't really
- 18:30super. I feel like his first
- 18:33performance back seemed like he was like lackluster and having
- 18:37like a lackluster energy. And I also do have mixed
- 18:41emotions when it comes to how he talks about sexuality.
- 18:44I think there's something to be said for like, yeah, it's
- 18:48awesome to talk about how, like, people don't need to label
- 18:51themselves. And I do think that there's like
- 18:53a space for that. And like, I think that that is
- 18:55really productive. And at the same time, I think
- 18:59sometimes when he talks about it, like, and I'll get into it
- 19:01later when he says like, oh, no one cares.
- 19:03It's like actually, it would be really helpful if some of these
- 19:08big artists weren't so passionate about being
- 19:11unlabeled, but did actually say something in a more clear way
- 19:16where people would understand that they're gay.
- 19:20You know what I mean? Even if they didn't read through
- 19:22the lines. So like, yes, it's true that all
- 19:25of these things are like fair. And I think all of these things
- 19:29shows that he is gay and he's very passionate about being like
- 19:34not specifically labeling himself, but also attaching
- 19:37himself to the queer community. And I think that is so awesome.
- 19:40However, it would also be very helpful if some of these big
- 19:45artists that were assumed to be straight it a very clear coming
- 19:49out. And again, I don't think we
- 19:50should have to do that and gay people shouldn't have to do
- 19:53that. But I also think that that would
- 19:56be so powerful as well. So it's like it doesn't take
- 20:00away from the legitimacy of that, but at the same time, it's
- 20:02like would be kind of awesome. So I guess like the SNL
- 20:07monologue made me feel so much better about the things he said
- 20:10in the past. Because now I feel like maybe
- 20:12he's trying to be a little bit more clear that like, I'm clear,
- 20:17I'm part of the community. You just don't know my exact
- 20:19identity. So anyways, in 2019, he did an
- 20:22interview with the Face. Harry says quote.
- 20:25I'm not always super outspoken. But I think it's very clear from
- 20:29choices that I make that I feel a certain way about a lot of
- 20:33things. He's like, if you actually like
- 20:35listen to my music and if you actually like watch anything,
- 20:41you can tell that I'm part of the queer community, but I'm not
- 20:45going to say it in the exact words you want.
- 20:48And like, I think that communicates everything that we
- 20:51are all picking up on, right? Like, I think that's like a very
- 20:54helpful comment. I think that's a 7.5 at its end.
- 20:56Moving on. 20/19 The Guardian interview.
- 21:00This is a very interesting interview that I have thoughts
- 21:02about. OK, the interviewer says quote.
- 21:04There's a popular perception that you don't define as
- 21:07straight and this interviewer like fucking straight up asks
- 21:10him. It's kind of crazy.
- 21:11The lyrics to your songs, the clothes you choose to wear, even
- 21:14the sleeve of your new record. All of these things get picked
- 21:17apart for clues that you are bisexual.
- 21:19Has anyone ever asked you though?
- 21:21This is so interesting too because like I wish Taylor had
- 21:24an interview like this where it was like really clear and no one
- 21:27tell me the Vogue interview because she is not fucking clear
- 21:30in that. Mary says I guess I have been
- 21:34asked but I don't know why it's like sounds like 7th grade when
- 21:39someone like do you like me? It's like, I don't know why the
- 21:42interviewer says, you mean why ask the question?
- 21:45Mary says, yeah, I think I do mean that.
- 21:47It's not like I'm sitting on an answer and protecting it and
- 21:50holding it back. It's not a case of I'm not
- 21:53telling you because I don't want to tell you.
- 21:55It's not, oh, this is mine and it's not yours, which I think is
- 21:58a really interesting thing to say.
- 22:00However, like he does contradict himself later.
- 22:03And I think it's a good reminder when we talk about like
- 22:05celebrities and like media that like people evolve and they grow
- 22:09and they change their mind and they change their perspective on
- 22:11things and we can let them do that.
- 22:13Like it seems like maybe he was like kind of very obvious with
- 22:17it during One Direction. And then maybe like wanted to be
- 22:21a part of the career community, but not have to talk about his
- 22:23actual label. And then maybe he got a little
- 22:27bit more open with it as time went on.
- 22:29Like so when people say hold celebrities to things that they
- 22:32said like 10 years ago or something, like people are like,
- 22:35oh, Taylor Swift said. And then whatever prologue, it's
- 22:37like, what if she changed her mind?
- 22:39What if she was closeted? Then like people can change,
- 22:42right? The interviewer says, what is
- 22:44it? Then Harry says it's who cares.
- 22:47Does that make sense? It's just who cares.
- 22:49And I don't really love that from Harry.
- 22:52Again, I feel like this is giving gay because you're like,
- 22:55oh, I'm queer, but I'm just not going to tell you my exact
- 22:58identity. People are not going to pick up
- 23:00on that. But the whole point here is
- 23:01that, like, he is not telling us he's straight.
- 23:05So we need to assume just from this section and we can assume
- 23:09he's queer from all these other things he said.
- 23:11But from just this section, it's very clear that he's like, not
- 23:15straight, right? And like, he hasn't told us his
- 23:17identity, but it's probably not straight.
- 23:19Like got real. I think this is like a one out
- 23:22of 10 because just like, the shadiness of him answering the
- 23:25question makes it seem like he's queer.
- 23:27I don't really like that he says who cares?
- 23:29Because I'm like gay people. It's not about like straight
- 23:33people like getting into your business.
- 23:34It's like gay people. But again, he changes his tune
- 23:38kind of all over the place. And isn't that the life of a
- 23:40bisexual? Which I do believe he is.
- 23:42But again, I can't like bet my money on it.
- 23:45And I'm not going to like prove that he's specifically bisexual,
- 23:48but I will try to prove that he is queer.
- 23:50Umbrella. So 2022, Better Homes, I think
- 23:53it's so fucking iconic and hilarious that he did an
- 23:55interview with Better Homes magazine.
- 23:57Like that's the gayest thing I've ever heard Harry says about
- 24:00his sexuality. Quote, I've been really open
- 24:03with it with my friends, but that's my personal experience.
- 24:07It's mine. Now.
- 24:09This is directly contradicting what he said in 2019 where he
- 24:13said, quote, it's not like I'm sitting on an answer, protecting
- 24:17it and holding it back like, oh, it's mine and not yours.
- 24:20And then in 2022, he says, that's my personal experience,
- 24:23it's mine. Like Harry, Harry, he may have
- 24:28not known how to answer the 2019 question.
- 24:30Maybe he wasn't ready. Maybe he was just trying to show
- 24:33that he doesn't really care about it.
- 24:34And then in 2022, he's trying to say that like, he is open about
- 24:39it in his personal life, but not everyone gets access to his
- 24:43personal life. Then he says, quote, the whole
- 24:46point of where we should be heading, which is toward
- 24:49accepting everybody and being more open is that it doesn't
- 24:52matter. And it's about not having to
- 24:53label everything, not having to clarify what boxes you're
- 24:56checking. And I think his intention is to
- 24:59say, you don't know my exact sexuality label and we shouldn't
- 25:03have to label ourselves. And I love that idea.
- 25:07I think the only thing that I'm messing with this comment is
- 25:11that like, we're not yet at the point where like, it doesn't
- 25:15matter yet, and we might need some more very influential
- 25:18people to be outwardly clear about being part of the queer
- 25:23community so we can get there. I don't think he has to, but I
- 25:27think it would be helpful. And again, I think he's pretty
- 25:31much done that with the SNL yet. People are so fucking dense.
- 25:35Like after SNL, everyone was like, oh, Harry Styles cleared
- 25:39up queer baiting rumors. And not like, oh, Harry Styles
- 25:43may have just come out. It's like we can't make that
- 25:45natural jump because people are so worried about talking about
- 25:48gay things now in the last five years.
- 25:50And so I do think like in 2022, this was an optimistic idea of
- 25:54like, oh, we don't need to label ourselves.
- 25:56And like, he's obviously such a queer advocate that like, I do
- 26:00think he's doing a lot of the work, but it seems like now
- 26:04we're in like a different world where like, I do think it'd be
- 26:06really helpful if people were a little bit more obvious with
- 26:10being queer. And again, it doesn't mean he
- 26:12has to. I think it would help.
- 26:14And it doesn't need to be like your exact label.
- 26:17I wish I could talk to him and like, have a conversation with
- 26:19him because I do think it's really interesting this
- 26:21conversation of like labels and like everyone's so focused on
- 26:25labels. But I wonder if he's talking
- 26:28about like even identifying with being like queer in general or
- 26:32like just talking about a specific label.
- 26:35Do you know what I mean? Because like, again, I don't
- 26:37think a lot of people realize that that's a good.
- 26:39Those are two different things. So then in 2022 and Rolling
- 26:42Stone, Harry says, quote, I think everyone, including
- 26:46myself, has your own journey with figuring out sexuality and
- 26:49getting more comfortable with it.
- 26:51Again, like this is a gay thing to say.
- 26:53Oh by the way, I'm going to rate the 2022 Better Homes like 5
- 26:57because you're saying you are protecting your sexuality and
- 27:01you're very open with it to people.
- 27:03Like I'm like that's gay bitch. I don't remember if I rated the
- 27:0620191 whatever 2022 Rolling Stone.
- 27:10Back to that quote, sometimes people say you've only publicly
- 27:14been with women and I don't think I've publicly been with
- 27:17anyone. If someone takes a picture with
- 27:20someone it doesn't mean you're choosing to have a public
- 27:22relationship or something. That is the most reputation
- 27:25prologue coded shit I've ever heard and really reminds me of a
- 27:29lot of celebrities and how they talk about their sexuality that
- 27:32we think may be queer. Sabrina, Olivia Rodrigo Taylor.
- 27:36I don't know. I said Sabrina's first name,
- 27:38Sabrina Carpenter. Like there's more.
- 27:41Obviously those are like the big name ones.
- 27:43But like it is very true that like when the media sees two
- 27:46people together, even if they're kissing doesn't mean they're
- 27:49dating. OK, They could be hooking up, or
- 27:53they could be not together at all.
- 27:55And so we classically put men and women together and we're
- 27:58like, oh, look, they're a couple.
- 28:00And I think it's really important that Harry says, you
- 28:03have no idea who I've dated. Like we don't actually know and
- 28:06I love that and that's fucking ambiguous as shit and gay as
- 28:09fuck 7 out of 10. All right, let's talk about his
- 28:12wardrobe Easter eggs. This is very Taylor Swift ask.
- 28:15And again, I do think Taylor and Harry are like friends.
- 28:18So even if Zoe is actively actually dating Harry Styles,
- 28:22which there's some good arguments that like Harry is
- 28:25actually gay, not bisexual and is closeted and like wants to be
- 28:30able to be open at a certain extent about a sexuality, but
- 28:33still is like bearding and like because maybe he's not ready to
- 28:37be like fully out as like gay. I think there's arguments for
- 28:42that. You know what I mean?
- 28:43Like wouldn't be the first time that fucking happened.
- 28:46But if Zoe and Harry were actually dating each other,
- 28:49which I think like maybe they are like, I don't even really
- 28:52know at this point. All I know is that he's just gay
- 28:54in some way, but I don't think Taylor gives a fuck because I
- 28:58don't think Taylor and Harry actually dated.
- 29:01And I also think that Taylor and Harry aren't like close friends,
- 29:07but I think that they're like, I think they had tea with each
- 29:10other just because they were like both big icons at the same
- 29:14time. I don't know.
- 29:15But I do think now they're in like a good place and they're
- 29:18more like colleagues that share notes when it comes to sexuality
- 29:22and music. And I think they both have like
- 29:24a big mutual respect for each other.
- 29:26And I think that they like learn from each other.
- 29:28And so how they both talk about this stuff is so similar.
- 29:32And again, this goes to the new romantics theory.
- 29:34But like, this is just so Taylor Swift coded first one.
- 29:37But Daddy, I love him. Sure, Harry wore with this
- 29:39Taylor writes a song, but Daddy I love him.
- 29:42But daddy I love him is from The Little Mermaid.
- 29:45Harry wears it. It makes it gay because he's
- 29:47saying but daddy, I love him. It seems like he likes a man,
- 29:50right? Taylor writes a song, but Daddy
- 29:52I love him in a straight way back to The Little Mermaid way.
- 29:56But it's gay because she's like talking about fucking religious
- 29:59trauma and how she can't be allowed to be with this person.
- 30:03Like but Daddy, I love him is so gay and I can't even talk about
- 30:05that. And it's like Harry wearing that
- 30:08pretty fucking gay 7 out of 10. Then we have him wearing a
- 30:12quote. I can't even think straight
- 30:14shirt. If he is straight, I'm going to
- 30:18say that's queer baiting. Like a straight man shouldn't be
- 30:20wearing that because it seems like you're saying that you're
- 30:22gay treatment shouldn't be doing a lot of things.
- 30:24So I'm going to say this pretty gay.
- 30:26And if you're at the point where people are accusing you of queer
- 30:28baiting, that's probably they're coming out and you didn't
- 30:30realize that they're gay. Do you know what I mean?
- 30:33It's probably them hinting that they're gay.
- 30:35So always side with they're not queer baiting.
- 30:37They're just gay. I will always assume someone's
- 30:39gay. 8 out of time. Then we have Harry wearing a
- 30:42shirt that says quote, I'd love to fellate George Harrison.
- 30:47Look up what that means. If you don't already know, 10
- 30:50out of 10 This man is having gay sex.
- 30:53Like you can't. You can't say he's not you can't
- 30:56say he's not after this. Like what?
- 30:58What the fuck? He also just like, and this is
- 31:00going to the on tour section. I have or he's done so much gay
- 31:03shit that like again, I couldn't fit a lot of this in one.
- 31:07Obviously this is like the hairy version of Gaylord, but like
- 31:10he's done so much gay shit and it's just, it couldn't be more
- 31:14obvious truly amount that he incorporates gay culture into
- 31:19his music. St. people don't do that.
- 31:22And this is also what I say with Taylor Swift as well.
- 31:24It's like street artists don't care that much about the gay
- 31:28community where it's a part of everything they do.
- 31:31And like, maybe they do, but if they are that into the gay
- 31:34community, then they're also probably gay.
- 31:37Do you know what I mean? He's waving around a pride flag
- 31:39and there's a coming out section of like every single part of his
- 31:41tours. Like it doesn't you have to be
- 31:44gay at this point. So in 2017 on tour, Harry says,
- 31:49quote, we're all a little gay, aren't we?
- 31:51Harry spotted a sign that said, I'm gay and I love you.
- 31:54And in response, Harry says, quote, we're all a little bit
- 31:57gay, aren't we? He said, we that's a coming out
- 32:00again, coming out. This is a coming out.
- 32:03Like they can be casual, they can be fun, they can be cheeky,
- 32:06they don't have to be serious and trauma dumping in order for
- 32:09straight people to receive that. That's gay.
- 32:12I'm going to say that's a nine out of 10.
- 32:14Then during Love on tour, which of course there's so many gay
- 32:17moments of this tour where he's like reading signs, talking
- 32:20about it, helping people come out, So many gay moments.
- 32:23But this one that's so notable is the sparkly by music moment.
- 32:27He's helping someone come out as bi to their friend and he is
- 32:31like, oh, band, like let's play some sparkly by music.
- 32:35He then looks you can see him thinking about this smirking,
- 32:39being like, Yep, I'm going to say it.
- 32:41And he goes is not all of this sparkly by music about his own
- 32:46goddamn music. Harry Styles says that I think
- 32:49he's gay. If like Joe Jonas said that, I
- 32:53would be like Joe now, why are you queer baiting?
- 32:56I mean, maybe he's by two, but like, you can just tell when
- 32:59someone's being authentic about it, right?
- 33:01He incorporates so much queer stuff because he's fucking
- 33:03queer. Sometimes the simplest answer is
- 33:05the right one. He thinks his own music is
- 33:07sparkly by music. And then he sings the little
- 33:11song that he sings when he like, helps people come out.
- 33:13He says, we're coming out tonight, we're coming out
- 33:15tonight. We're coming out is by like 10
- 33:19out of 10, gay, gay, gay, gay, gay.
- 33:22Finally, let's get into Harry's lyrics and music.
- 33:27And these are like the classic Taylor Swift Easter eggs that
- 33:30you find. And I'm sure there's more.
- 33:32Like, I haven't listened to all of his songs.
- 33:34Sumi. This is an introductory course.
- 33:37Of course. If you guys know anyone that's
- 33:40like an expert in like Larry Stylinson or Harry Styles and
- 33:43his sexuality, like, let me know.
- 33:45I want them on this pod. And that goes for like any
- 33:47guest, by the way. But some of these fucking songs
- 33:53are, I mean, I wish someone could like count how many times
- 33:56I've said gay in this podcast. But sometimes there's no other
- 33:58word for the homosexuality that reeks from this man's music.
- 34:04You can hear it and you can smell it from miles away.
- 34:07So medicine, of course, this is the standard classic gay song.
- 34:13He never actually released this. And again, this is another
- 34:17situation that just like is so similar to Taylor Swift's where
- 34:21she, like, changes up a song with like, she her pronouns.
- 34:23And then people always think she's saying like you, like she
- 34:27or like, I don't know how people will like rewrite it be like, Oh
- 34:31no, I didn't hear she, like I didn't hear that I heard you.
- 34:34I heard they or whatever the fuck or I heard we like.
- 34:37But it's a similar thing where if you look up medicine lyrics,
- 34:41it's not going to say him, it's going to say them.
- 34:43And my argument and then I'll read the lyrics is that it
- 34:46doesn't actually matter because it's still gay.
- 34:48So lyrics are tingle running through my bones.
- 34:51The boys and the girls are in OK, bisexual.
- 34:54I mess around with them even if even if it doesn't say him where
- 35:00some people think it says, and I do think so and how he says it
- 35:04and sings on stage, I mess around with him even if it's not
- 35:07that he says. I mess around with them after
- 35:10the line of the boys and the girls are in, I mess around with
- 35:13them, all of them. You guys are being dense.
- 35:17If you don't see that as being gay, like how can people not Do
- 35:21people just want to hear a lyric of him saying I'm gay because
- 35:25that's boring and not art. Artists are going to art.
- 35:28Then he says, and I'm OK with it.
- 35:30I'm coming down. I figured out I kind of like it
- 35:32when I'm all out. I think about the way you write
- 35:34it. If I could go for a man or a
- 35:36woman or anyone in between. So that's like that's a 10 on
- 35:40the 10. That's one of the gays lyrics.
- 35:43It's giving lips of scarlet. They were maroon, right?
- 35:46It's giving argumentative antithetical dream girl.
- 35:49And we have the golden unreleased lyrics.
- 35:51These are lyrics that he would sing on stage and sometimes they
- 35:53change and they're not in the official lyrics quote.
- 35:56He is broken and I'm hoping someday he'll open gay.
- 36:01I'm hoping that someday I could be open.
- 36:03I know that you're scared because I'm so open.
- 36:05Like this is about his sexuality.
- 36:07I I'm like what? 10 out of 10 gay pop lyrics from
- 36:13his latest album Quote Katie's waiting to be your game day
- 36:17savior. So he's talking about a woman
- 36:20wanting to be your so either a woman with another woman because
- 36:25this is probably about sex, so that's gay, or a woman with
- 36:29another man and he's talking to the man gay.
- 36:32First time tasting it. It's nice to mix 2 flavors.
- 36:38He's talking about a threesome with a man and a woman together.
- 36:41Together. It's just me on my knees, pop.
- 36:47So I'm going to end with that. I'm going to say like that's a
- 36:50nine out of 10 because I'm sure straight people like don't see
- 36:53two flavors meaning 2 genders, but I do.
- 36:56And just a reminder, like I think all of these are pretty
- 37:00goddamn gay, but it's just in the ability for people to
- 37:04recognize how gay something is. If you're not convinced that
- 37:08he's at least a part of the queer community and is like
- 37:11resistant to specifically label his exact sexuality, I can't
- 37:15help you. I'm sure you guys are all
- 37:18convinced at this point. If you're watching this already,
- 37:22let me know what you think is like the strongest evidence.
- 37:24I'm so glad that he did this SNL monologue because I do feel like
- 37:29it cleared up. Not just that he was not queer
- 37:31baiting, but he was not queer baiting because he is queer.
- 37:35Something that I'm glad he said, especially in the climate we're
- 37:38in where it's like, yeah, be a little bit more clear that
- 37:42you're not queer baiting and you're like one of us, which
- 37:46we've been known, right? I will add, there's this
- 37:50interview from 2013, AGQ interview where he's asked if
- 37:53he's bisexual and Harry says bisexual.
- 37:56Me, I don't think so. I'm pretty sure I'm not.
- 37:58And people usually use that as being like, oh, guys, he said
- 38:01he's not bisexual. First of all, point A, he could
- 38:04be gay. And major point B, this is in
- 38:082013. Maybe he was put on the spot and
- 38:12uncomfortable and didn't know how to answer a direct question
- 38:15about his sexuality when he's very young.
- 38:18I think like maybe not even 18 yet.
- 38:22Very very young. Maybe in his first love with
- 38:25Louis maybe. And a lot has changed since then
- 38:30so let's not use old interviews. It's like evidence to why a
- 38:34grown man talking about multiple genders and that that can't be
- 38:39gay. So just because someone said
- 38:41something in the past doesn't mean they can't grow and change.
- 38:43And also, I do believe that like, a lot of people are
- 38:46closeted, put on the spot, maybe like he was wanting to be
- 38:50closeted at a time and now maybe he's not.
- 38:52So like, let's just remember that media literacy.
- 38:56So yeah, guys, please let me know what you think is the
- 38:59gayest one. What is your ratings?
