- 0:04Coop podcast. My name is Kim Johnson and I am
- 0:07a mastermind, set coach, creative strategist, and also
- 0:09happen to be a farmer. This is my chicken coop and I
- 0:12come out here every day to record a podcast to teach
- 0:16distinctions, possibilities, new ways of thinking, and just bring
- 0:20some joy into the world. So welcome to the coop and let's
- 0:23start your day off in a fantastic way.
- 0:27Hey everybody, good morning from the chicken coop.
- 0:30Well, if I'm telling you the truth, it's good afternoon
- 0:32because I was so sad the last few days it's been so cold and I
- 0:35haven't been able to be out here that we're shooting this in the
- 0:38afternoon for tomorrow morning as the girls are getting ready
- 0:41to go to bed. So some of them are putting
- 0:43themselves to sleep already and the lights still out, but it's
- 0:46going down quickly. So today we are talking about
- 0:51the the challenge that we all have when it comes to really
- 0:56honing in on our beliefs about situations, positive, negative
- 1:02situations, neutral situations, whatever it is we're talking
- 1:06about. That one critical little thing
- 1:08that I like to say is what else could it mean?
- 1:12Fascinating thing. We've talked about this before
- 1:14over the years, but at the beginning of the year, I really
- 1:17like to hammer this home to my clients because it all depends
- 1:21on how you see things. So we'll often say it's the
- 1:24model of the world. It's what what you believe is
- 1:26it? You know it, we walk outside and
- 1:29the weather has sun and clouds and somebody else will say,
- 1:33well, it's cloudy with some sun and I'll say, well, it's sunny
- 1:35with some clouds. So what is the difference?
- 1:38It's the model of the world, how you want to see it.
- 1:40It's the framework around which you put together.
- 1:44You know, often this comes down to our primary critical way of
- 1:48thinking and which version comes out is is part of that.
- 1:52You're demonstrating that your primary critical way of
- 1:54thinking. So at the beginning of the year,
- 1:58what we want to look at is how to reframe things quickly.
- 2:03That's why we've been talking about that this week and how
- 2:06we're going to shift that. So this one, this framework of
- 2:09asking what else could this mean?
- 2:11What else could this be? What else can I believe about
- 2:15this? What's another way I can look at
- 2:17the situation comes back to our, you know, podcast I did the
- 2:21other day on questions and asking yourself the right
- 2:23questions. But this one really boils down
- 2:26to working on not seeing everything as all or nothing.
- 2:31This, this is a really big thing to look at it and say, am I on
- 2:36one extreme or the other? Because there are two distinct
- 2:39extremes that often take place in our head.
- 2:42You're either all in or all out. It's a hell yes or a hell no.
- 2:44We've all heard that one. It's a hell yes or a hell no.
- 2:48And while that is a fantastic thing to believe and work on a
- 2:52good deal of the time, there's also a little bit of, you know,
- 2:57limitation to that because it doesn't allow you to stop over
- 3:02generalizing things about a specific subject.
- 3:05So you really want to make sure that you're framing this in a,
- 3:10in a way that says, I have to look at the entire situation,
- 3:14just not far left and not far right.
- 3:17Just like in politics, when we look at far left and far right,
- 3:21the majority of the people are usually in the middle.
- 3:24They have beliefs they adopt from both sides.
- 3:26So we do ourselves a vast disservice when we take out our
- 3:31ability to see down the middle, if that makes sense.
- 3:35And this is where this gets into that.
- 3:38There is, you know, is it right or wrong?
- 3:41Is it black or white? Well, for me and how I work with
- 3:45my clients on this, it's all about, well, it could be black
- 3:49and it could be white, but there is also 256 Shades of Grey in
- 3:53the middle that we can all look at and say, OK, maybe it's one
- 3:57of these, or maybe it's this, or maybe it's this, or it could
- 3:59mean this or it could mean this. And once you start looking at
- 4:02the nuance, which is really important with all of this, you
- 4:06start to realize that everybody has a different flavor of this.
- 4:09Everybody has a different take on things.
- 4:11And then that makes it a little bit more bearable to be in this
- 4:14the world and really live with other people because you
- 4:18recognize we all have different points of view.
- 4:21I mean, I don't care who you are and what you do.
- 4:24Everyone has a slightly different point of view.
- 4:27I am standing here in the middle of the girls coop and I have two
- 4:30containers of food out. I have one that's like a grain
- 4:33food with all different grains in it.
- 4:35And then I have one that's a grub food.
- 4:37And I will tell you handedly they prefer the grub food over
- 4:43the other food. But yet there are some that
- 4:45still come and eat this other food, the grain food.
- 4:48And I keep both. And it has been said to me, my
- 4:51husband has said to me, well, why not just switch over to the
- 4:53grub fruit? And I'm like, because there are
- 4:55some of them that still like the grain, fruit, even chickens have
- 4:58this issue where we're not all one way or another.
- 5:01And I have one chicken that will eat both foods.
- 5:03I see her, I'm sure a lot of them do that, but she will pig
- 5:06out on both of them. So I'm like, I can't even tell
- 5:08which one that she likes more than.
- 5:10And we're all like that. We are all like that.
- 5:13It's like you might like to eat cereal every day, but you don't
- 5:16want to eat it every single day. You'll say, oh, and I eat cereal
- 5:19every day, but it's not every single day.
- 5:21It's a gross exaggeration. So when we get clear on these
- 5:25things, we help ourselves. So this is it's all about that
- 5:28critical step and that critical thinking of not over
- 5:31generalizing, being very clear about what we mean when we say
- 5:36what we say so that we can help ourselves participate and move
- 5:41forward understanding. It's not one way or another.
- 5:44Typically it's there are a lot of different variations.
- 5:47So the questions we have to ask ourselves have to be really
- 5:50good. What else could this mean?
- 5:52Because the broader our perspective, the more likely we
- 5:55are to hit that happy spot. All right, my friends, I hope
- 5:58you have a blessed day and I will see you all tomorrow.
- 6:01Bye.
