- 0:01Speaker 1: Here's your host, Alex Garrett. All right, well, I'm listening
- 0:06Speaker 1: to New York Sports Talk today and I have to
- 0:09Speaker 1: fire it up here on the one leg up on
- 0:10Speaker 1: Sports feature because I did this last time when I
- 0:14Speaker 1: thought Jasan Dominga should have been batting lead off, and
- 0:17Speaker 1: when they batted them lead off five straight days or so,
- 0:20Speaker 1: they had a five game win streak. Coincidence, I think not.
- 0:24Speaker 1: You want to know what I think. On August fifth,
- 0:27Speaker 1: twenty twenty five, with the Yankees looming in the second
- 0:33Speaker 1: wild card spot all the way from first, they fall
- 0:37Speaker 1: into tide with the Mariners first second wild card in
- 0:40Speaker 1: the American League, you know it's gonna change it. I'm
- 0:44Speaker 1: gonna speak out on this projection from the bullpen. You
- 0:49Speaker 1: got all these relievers, now you send down Bird. So
- 0:55Speaker 1: here's what you do. I still say consistency at the
- 0:58Speaker 1: top of the lineup will help this push. We're still
- 1:00Speaker 1: in a playoff push. I can't believe in August. I'm
- 1:03Speaker 1: worried about what Boston's doing already. But here we are.
- 1:07Speaker 1: We're here, and I'm gonna throw this out there to
- 1:14Speaker 1: manager Aaron Boone. If you want to really seal down
- 1:18Speaker 1: these games, and if you want to not panic at
- 1:24Speaker 1: a five to four lead, I think putting in Deval
- 1:26Speaker 1: in the seventh was a panic move yesterday. I don't
- 1:29Speaker 1: think that should be the long term practice. So here's
- 1:33Speaker 1: what we do. Sixth inning Luke Weaver, seventh inning Devin
- 1:38Speaker 1: Williams or lug Wisega or a lighter junior or cruise.
- 1:43Speaker 1: Eighth inning. Looks like Bennar is your guy. Ninth inning
- 1:47Speaker 1: is Doval and see how that works. But Williams should
- 1:51Speaker 1: not touch the ninth inning the rest of the season.
- 1:55Speaker 1: We've been burned time and time again. That bullpen was
- 1:59Speaker 1: looking fantastic. Stick that inning from Weaver, that inning from Dovall,
- 2:03Speaker 1: that inn'ting from Bendar. Then Williams comes in and disaster strikes,
- 2:09Speaker 1: and then Berg comes in and he gives up the
- 2:11Speaker 1: game winner. Look, I haven't been this passionate about a
- 2:17Speaker 1: bullpen since I used to be in the suite saying,
- 2:22Speaker 1: all right, well they're gonna bring up the lefty now
- 2:23Speaker 1: to face the lefty batter, blah blah blah blah. Well
- 2:26Speaker 1: I'm invested. You bring in a few new arms you
- 2:31Speaker 1: it's gonna be fascinating how Boom mixes and matches as
- 2:34Speaker 1: bullpen the rest of the way, because remember there's also
- 2:36Speaker 1: a bullpen budget they got to deal with also every night,
- 2:42Speaker 1: every fricking night, they deal with a bullpen budget. And
- 2:48Speaker 1: now they just have to nail down these games. I
- 2:53Speaker 1: still believe there could be a bridge to a closer,
- 2:57Speaker 1: and that closer should be Dovall, and I believe that
- 3:00Speaker 1: bridge will be very strong. And I still stand by
- 3:03Speaker 1: what I said on Thursday, which is I still feel
- 3:06Speaker 1: like this bullpen has a potential to be a nineties
- 3:10Speaker 1: kind of version of the twenty twenty five Yankee bullpen.
- 3:15Speaker 1: And again I'm gonna say it here on August fifth,
- 3:21Speaker 1: twenty twenty five, Consistency at the top of the lineup
- 3:32Speaker 1: is what's needed the bullpen. The bullpen needs to have
- 3:43Speaker 1: a consistent rote you know, dedicated guy for each inning.
- 3:49Speaker 1: That's needed. We love our starters to go seven, right
- 3:52Speaker 1: that way, it's only eight to nine, but it doesn't
- 3:54Speaker 1: happen all the time. Hasn't happened in a little while.
- 4:00Speaker 1: Schmidt was one of the last guys to go deep
- 4:01Speaker 1: in a game, and he was no hitting. To be
- 4:07Speaker 1: more specific, he was no hitting. The orioles a few
- 4:15Speaker 1: about a month or two ago on June twenty first
- 4:20Speaker 1: seven hitless innings, he should have gone in for the eighth.
- 4:24Speaker 1: But I digress, you're not gonna get that every night.
- 4:29Speaker 1: And we love to get that from a freed a
- 4:31Speaker 1: rodawn now a heel, a Schlitzler has a potential to
- 4:35Speaker 1: do that, I think, but we can't. We can't mess
- 4:39Speaker 1: around with the back end of the game. And if
- 4:43Speaker 1: they follow this formula, remember Tory had a couple of
- 4:46Speaker 1: formulas going on. Tory had the formula of bringing in
- 4:53Speaker 1: Stanton and Nelson and getting into Mariano, and getting into Mariano,
- 5:01Speaker 1: Aaron Boone has its potential to build the formula here
- 5:05Speaker 1: to get us through this long elongated rough patch. Elongated
- 5:14Speaker 1: rough patch. So the formula to me is going to
- 5:18Speaker 1: be Weaver in the sixth, Williams in the seventh, Bennar
- 5:21Speaker 1: in the eighth, Dovall in the ninth. And of course
- 5:24Speaker 1: Williams can be substitutent, a lewaizega, a lighter junior, a
- 5:28Speaker 1: cruise if you do not coming to Williams on that day,
- 5:33Speaker 1: or a bopen budget thing. But keep it, keep it formulaic.
- 5:38Speaker 1: The nineties were formulaic for the Yankees, and so I
- 5:42Speaker 1: would say here on the one leg up on sports
- 5:46Speaker 1: for August fifth, twenty twenty five, this should be rock bottom,
- 5:51Speaker 1: tied for the Mariners for the second wild card spot
- 5:54Speaker 1: after leading the division seven games up in Jude should
- 5:59Speaker 1: be the rock and how do we climb ourselves out
- 6:03Speaker 1: of it? Have one leg up on formulas, not analytics,
- 6:08Speaker 1: but formula, and that will get us back, not only
- 6:12Speaker 1: in the chase. I still think there's time to take
- 6:15Speaker 1: this division and overtake Boston Aaron Boone, just as I
- 6:22Speaker 1: have one leg up on formulas. That's how the Tory
- 6:26Speaker 1: era went, and now the Girardi era went in a sense,
- 6:31Speaker 1: but mainly the Toy era. He had that winning formula
- 6:36Speaker 1: and you know what, twenty six years later, I think
- 6:40Speaker 1: of ninety eight, twenty seven, I guess years later, Cashman's
- 6:45Speaker 1: done it again. He's provided a manager with the formula
- 6:49Speaker 1: for success. I know Jake Bird was sent bent down.
- 6:52Speaker 1: That's not a good look, but overall, there's a formula
- 6:56Speaker 1: for success here and Boone's got to read into it
- 7:00Speaker 1: and get rid of the analytics. Do what Tori did.
- 7:04Speaker 1: Have one leg up on formula, and I do think
- 7:08Speaker 1: once again I'll say it till I'm blue in the
- 7:11Speaker 1: fricking face. Jusan di Mingez leading off is part of that.
- 7:15Speaker 1: Formula is part of that, for he will set the tone.
- 7:19Speaker 1: He sets the tone every time in that leadoff position,
- 7:27Speaker 1: and that's how you develop a winning formula. That's all
- 7:36Speaker 1: I got for now, but one leg up on Sports
- 7:39Speaker 1: with Alex Garett today urges Aaron Boone to have a
- 7:43Speaker 1: one leg up on formula because formulaic baseball, like fundamental baseball,
- 7:52Speaker 1: will get you beyond the wild card spots and back
- 7:55Speaker 1: in the division race. We'll talk to you soon on
- 8:02Speaker 1: the one like our network
