- 0:00It was just a couple weeks ago, it seems like that Lance was
- 0:03preaching in Ecclesiastes, right?
- 0:06And if you remember, he had a message in Ecclesiastes 11.
- 0:10I'm sorry, Ecclesiastes 10 called the description of the
- 0:13fool. And when I saw that, I'm like,
- 0:15oh man, he's going to steal my Thunder because I was going to
- 0:17preach Psalm 53 all about fools. But I decided to go ahead and do
- 0:21it because I'm excited about this tonight.
- 0:23But let me ask you tonight a question.
- 0:25Have you heard about this group of people called the Flat Earth
- 0:29Society? Anybody heard of those people?
- 0:32They got a lot of recognition a few years ago because Kyrie
- 0:35Irving, who's a basketball player for the Dallas, is it
- 0:38Mavericks joined them and came out saying he believed the earth
- 0:41was flat. So I did AI was reading an
- 0:44article about them and this is this is on their web page.
- 0:48It says the Flat Earth society man's the guns against
- 0:52oppression of thought and the globalist lies of a new age
- 0:56standing with reason. We offer a home for those
- 0:59wayward thinkers that March bravely on with reason and truth
- 1:04in recognizing the true shape of the Earth flat.
- 1:08Come join us in our forums and get started learning about the
- 1:11greatest lie ever told. You know, I read that and I was
- 1:16preparing this message about fools and because the earth was
- 1:21all settled, that it was round by Greek philosophers.
- 1:24Aristotle, you know, in the 384 BC, knew it was round.
- 1:29And there's a guy named E Ruth Pasethus, if I could say his
- 1:34name, in the 3rd century, he actually calculated the
- 1:36circumference of the Earth round.
- 1:39Islamic scholars knew that in the early nineteen, 10th
- 1:43centuries, knew the Earth was round.
- 1:45And of course, European navigators sailed the Earth,
- 1:48knew it was round in the 16th century.
- 1:50If you've ever been to Russia with us and you fly the plane
- 1:53way up, you can actually see the curvature sometimes at night in
- 1:57the airplane. OK.
- 1:58And then there are millions of pictures of Earth.
- 2:02Ellen Musk must send a rocket ship every week up north, up the
- 2:05skies. And they always shoot back
- 2:07pictures of Earth. And guess what?
- 2:09It's round, right? So you look at the sky and you
- 2:13see the moon. The planets are all round.
- 2:15But what's really strange is there's even some Christians
- 2:18that have joined this society. But what does the Bible say?
- 2:22It had it right 3500 years ago. Isaiah 4022 says it is he who
- 2:28sits above the circle of the earth.
- 2:31Proverbs 827 says when he established the heavens, I was
- 2:36there when he drew a circle on the face of the deep.
- 2:41God had it right thousands of years ago.
- 2:43So I think these Flat Earth society are a bunch of fools
- 2:47now. I would call them stupid, but my
- 2:50wife says I'm not allowed to use the word stupid anymore.
- 2:52Apparently it's not politically correct.
- 2:54But I always tell her, well, Proverbs 12/1 says whoever loves
- 2:58discipline loves knowledge, but he who hates correction is
- 3:02stupid. But then the new legacy standard
- 3:06Bible just changed it. They changed it to whoever loves
- 3:09discipline loves knowledge, but he who hates reproof is
- 3:13senseless. So maybe that's a better word.
- 3:16I want you stupid so at least I can call them fools and
- 3:19senseless. We've had incredible advances in
- 3:22education, science, medicine, and especially technology.
- 3:26We can send spaceships to Mars, cure diseases, all the
- 3:30incredible advancements of society.
- 3:32Yet we have more fools than ever.
- 3:36The Bible has a lot to say about fools, especially in the wisdom
- 3:39books or the poetry books, Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes,
- 3:45and not so much Song of Solomon. But it mentions fools 95 times
- 3:50in those five books out of the 117 times in the entire Bible.
- 3:56And if I had time tonight, we're going to have a baptism tonight.
- 3:58So I'll go a little quicker. But next time write down
- 4:01Proverbs 26. Proverbs 26 is the Fool and
- 4:05Sluggard chapter of Proverbs. And if you read the first 12
- 4:09verses of Proverbs 26, you will notice that 11 of the 12 verses
- 4:15talk about fools. So I won't read it tonight, but
- 4:18I'll let you do it, OK. And so tonight we're going to
- 4:26read not just Psalm 53, but we're going to read Psalm 14.
- 4:30And I think you'll see why. So turn to me to Psalm 14.
- 4:34Our Psalm tonight is only 6 verses, but we're going to read
- 4:39Psalm 14, which is 7 verses. And we'll talk about why did the
- 4:43Holy Spirit put these two almost alike Psalms in our Bible.
- 4:47So First off, Psalm 14 says to the choir, master of David, the
- 4:52fool says in his heart, there is no God.
- 4:55They are corrupt, they do abominable deeds.
- 4:58There is none who does good. The Lord looks down from heaven
- 5:02on the children of man to see if there are any who understand,
- 5:05who seek after God. They have all turned aside
- 5:08together, they have become corrupt.
- 5:10There is none who does good, not even one.
- 5:14Have they no knowledge. All the evil doers who eat up my
- 5:16people as they eat bread and do not call upon the Lord, there
- 5:21they are in great terror. For God is with the generation
- 5:24of the righteous. You would put to shame the plans
- 5:27of the poor, but the Lord is His refuge.
- 5:30Oh, that salvation for Israel would come out of Zion when the
- 5:34Lord restores the fortunes of His people.
- 5:36Let Jacob rejoice, let Israel be glad.
- 5:39Psalms 14 Now turn to Psalms 53. And I know it's hard just
- 5:45reading it to see the differences.
- 5:48Psalms 53 says to the choirmaster.
- 5:50According to a Mahalath, a masculine of David, the fool
- 5:55says in his heart, there is no God.
- 5:57They are corrupt, doing abominable iniquity.
- 6:00There is none who does good. God looks down from heaven on
- 6:03the children of man to see if there are any who understand,
- 6:06who seek after God. They have all fallen away
- 6:10together. They have become corrupt.
- 6:12There is none who does good, not even 1.
- 6:15Have those who work evil no knowledge, who eat up my people
- 6:19as they eat bread, and do not call upon God.
- 6:22There they are in great terror, where there is no terror.
- 6:26For God scatters the bones of him who encamps against you.
- 6:29You put them to shame, for God has rejected them.
- 6:33Oh, that salvation for Israel would come out of Zion.
- 6:36When God restores the fortunes of His people, let Jacob
- 6:39rejoice, let Israel be glad. Father in Heaven, we thank you
- 6:43that we can read these two short Psalms tonight.
- 6:45May your Holy Spirit speak to us tonight.
- 6:47That everyone here would not be a fool, would not be foolish,
- 6:51but they'd have wisdom and that they would follow Jesus Christ
- 6:53and be born again in Jesus name, Amen.
- 6:57So did anybody notice any differences between Psalm 14 and
- 7:00Psalm 53? Anybody have a legacy standard
- 7:04Bible? It probably pops out there more.
- 7:06I'm not reading out of that tonight.
- 7:08Well, First off, Psalms 14 has seven verses, right?
- 7:11And Psalm 53 has 6 verses. And that's because verse 5 of
- 7:16Psalm 53 replaces verses 5 and 6 of Psalms 14.
- 7:21OK, we'll look at that later. OK, so verse 5 of Psalms 53
- 7:27replaces verse 5 and 6 of Psalm 14.
- 7:30Now you may not notice that Psalms 14 has seven verses and
- 7:35the name of God is mentioned 7 times and the name Lord Capital
- 7:42Yahweh or Jehovah is used four of those seven times in Psalms
- 7:4614. Yet when we read Psalms 53 it
- 7:51also mentions God seven times, but it does not use the name
- 7:55Yahweh. It uses the Hebrew name Elohim.
- 7:59So in the legacy standard Bible you would notice it because as
- 8:02Yahweh in your English Bible you would have to see the Lord in
- 8:06Psalms 14 and just God in Psalm 53 for Elohim.
- 8:12And that makes sense because remember, Psalms is five books.
- 8:16And in book 1, which is Psalms 1 to 41, the common name or
- 8:20predominant name for God is Yahweh.
- 8:23And in book 2, Psalms 42 to 72, Elohim is the prominent name for
- 8:29God. You can see that as you study it
- 8:31closer and closer. And then what's the difference?
- 8:34Well, most commentators believe that Psalms 14 seems to address
- 8:39Israelite fools who ignore God, while Psalms 53 addresses
- 8:45Israel's enemies, foreigners who think they can attack and
- 8:50destroy God's people. And another reason is why
- 8:54they're two Psalms. Well, what's the Holy Spirit
- 8:57telling us through David? Some commentators believe David
- 9:01wrote Psalms 14 as a boy and Psalms 53 late in his life as an
- 9:06older man. Spurgeon said David, after a
- 9:09long life, found men no better than they were in his youth.
- 9:13If our age has advanced from 14 to 53, we shall find the
- 9:18doctrine of this Psalm more evident than in our youth.
- 9:22And next, some have tried to make the claim that Psalm 53,
- 9:26even though it says it's ascribed to David, was rewritten
- 9:30by the worship leaders in the temple, the sons of Korra, to
- 9:34celebrate a great military delivery delivery.
- 9:37And I'll talk more about that when we get to verse 5, because
- 9:41verse 5 says, for God scatters the bones of him who encamps
- 9:45against you. So I, I, I'm going to lean
- 9:48towards that. OK, what type of Psalm is this?
- 9:51Well, some would say it's a lament, others would say it's a
- 9:54wisdom Psalm, but it's really a unique Psalm that just draws
- 9:58different genres. It's kind of wisdom, it's kind
- 10:01of lament, but it does teach us that God will eventually destroy
- 10:05all the enemies of Israel. And you have to go to Revelation
- 10:09chapter 19, verses 11 to 21 to see where God does destroy all
- 10:14the enemies of Israel. We have a superscription in
- 10:17Psalm 53. It says to the choirmaster
- 10:20according to a a MA hololith and that ma hololith is apparently a
- 10:24type of a musical instrument or a tune on musical instrument and
- 10:29mass skill, as we said last week, is a instruction or why
- 10:32sing? We have three points on your
- 10:35outline. If you have an outline tonight,
- 10:37I hope you do the depravity of fools.
- 10:40And we have a bunch of characteristics of fools and
- 10:42then we have .2 the destruction of fools, which is just one
- 10:45verse. And then we have in the last
- 10:48verse the faithful are delivered.
- 10:49Real simple outline. Let's look at point #1 the
- 10:52depravity of fools verses one to four.
- 10:55And these are just simply characteristics of the fools and
- 10:59a sub point. A fools deny God.
- 11:02The Psalm begins with the observation.
- 11:04The fool says in his heart there is no God.
- 11:08It just says the fool. Now, you know the Hebrew word
- 11:11for fool is novel, and we'll talk about that.
- 11:13Or Nabel, we'll talk about that. Because you remember he was
- 11:16married to Abigail. And in First Samuel 25, David
- 11:21went to get some food from him and he refused.
- 11:24Spurgeon said. The fool has said in his heart
- 11:27there is no God, and this he does because he's a fool.
- 11:32Being a fool, he speaks according to his nature.
- 11:35Being a great fool, he meddles with a great subject and comes
- 11:38to a wild conclusion. The atheist is morally as well
- 11:42mentally a fool, a fool in the heart as well as a fool in the
- 11:46head, a fool in morals as well in philosophy.
- 11:50With the denial of God as a starting point, we may well
- 11:54conclude that a fool's progress is a rapid, riotous, raving,
- 11:59ruinous. 1 He who begins and and impiety is ready for anything.
- 12:05No God being interpreted means no law, no order, no restraint
- 12:09to lust, no limit to passions. Now it's not just a reference to
- 12:13a particular person, but to every person in the human race
- 12:17who denies God, including Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus.
- 12:21They also are, in a way, atheists.
- 12:24The chief characteristic of of a fool is one who decides to live
- 12:27a godless life as if there is no God.
- 12:30Today we call these people practical atheists.
- 12:34When we hear the word fool, we think of a stupid person right?
- 12:37Or a senseless person. But this person makes a
- 12:39conscious choice to engage in destructive behavior.
- 12:43He lives to as a practical atheist who denies
- 12:46accountability to God and the judgement of God in the future.
- 12:50Fools who deny God, persistent living as if there's no God in
- 12:54his or her daily life. You're all familiar with that
- 12:57great chapter in Romans one which talks about these people
- 13:01in Romans one. We read it quite often in this
- 13:03church, verses 18. I'll read verses 18 to 23 in
- 13:06Romans one. It says, For the wrath of God is
- 13:10revealed from heaven against all the ungodliness and
- 13:13unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress
- 13:17the truth. For what can be known about God
- 13:19is plain to them, because God has shown it to them.
- 13:23For His invisible attributes, namely His internal power and
- 13:27divine nature, have been clearly perceived ever since the
- 13:31creation of the world in the things that have been made.
- 13:34So they are without excuse. For although they knew God, they
- 13:38did not honor Him as God, nor give thanks to Him.
- 13:42But they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish
- 13:45hearts were darkened. And then verse 22 says claiming
- 13:48to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of
- 13:53immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds,
- 13:56animals and creeping things. You have famous atheists like
- 14:00Christopher Hitchens, Richard Dawkins, the Science guy, Bill
- 14:04Nye, and very clear that God sees atheism as absolute
- 14:08foolishness. If you deny the existence of
- 14:10God, God says you are a fool. B Fools do iniquity.
- 14:15Continuing verse one says they are corrupt, doing abominable
- 14:19iniquity. There is none who do good here.
- 14:22We have one of the strongest statements in the entire Bible
- 14:26in the passages about the corruption of the human race.
- 14:29The first declaration is they are corrupt and the Hebrew words
- 14:32here mean rune or devastate. This is the word that was used
- 14:37to describe complete corruption of man prior to the flood in
- 14:40Genesis chapter 6 and Sodom and Gomorrah in Genesis 18 and 19.
- 14:46The corruption is so bad that it deserves judgment like God did
- 14:52the flood and Sodom and Gomorrah.
- 14:54The second declaration in verse one is of the fool is that they
- 14:58doing abominable iniquity. We don't use that word today but
- 15:02it means abhorrent, it means appalling, it means awful, it
- 15:05means disgusting. The third declaration is of a
- 15:09fool is there is none who does good and if you notice that the
- 15:13verse of N1 it says there is no one who does good.
- 15:16The end of verse 3 again it says there is none who does good.
- 15:22This is called an inclusio. You see this a lot in the
- 15:24Psalms, which so that you have an inclusio which frames the
- 15:29description of the wicked. Yes, there are some believers
- 15:34who do good in their life, right?
- 15:35We all know them, but not in God's sight.
- 15:38I think a Mother Teresa where I live in India, we lived in West
- 15:42Bengal for many years. OK, but they're, they are, they
- 15:46may do good deeds, but they're not doing it for the glory of
- 15:49God. Their good is not pleasing to
- 15:51God. This statement is at the heart
- 15:54of what we call the total depravity of man.
- 15:57Proverbs 10/23 says doing wrong is like a joke to a fool.
- 16:03Proverbs 1319 says but to turn away from evil is an abomination
- 16:08to fools. So let's look at see fools don't
- 16:12seek God. Verse 2 says God looks down from
- 16:15heaven on the children of man. Our text says that God looks
- 16:19down from heaven and God really doesn't need to look down from
- 16:23heaven. We all know that he's omniscient
- 16:25and and knows everything. So we have a just a figurative
- 16:29statement here. This is there's a divine search
- 16:33God is is having among the unbelieving world to see who
- 16:37might be seeking God or attempting to please him.
- 16:40But it's a vain search, a search that will lead to judgement as
- 16:44in the other times in Scripture when God looked down.
- 16:47And if you've been with us, Lance has covered this and many
- 16:49times God looked down and Noah's flood, Genesis 6, God looked
- 16:53down at the Tower of Babel, Genesis 11 and God looked down
- 16:57at Sodom and Mora in Genesis 18. And those three times there was
- 17:01judgement in all three cases. It says that God looks to see if
- 17:05there any who understand who seek after God.
- 17:08You know when God speaks, we should listen, right?
- 17:11When God speaks twice, we should really pay attention.
- 17:15So when Paul, God speaks three times, we really need to pay
- 17:19attention. So you probably know that
- 17:22Apostle Paul uses the part of verse 2 and verse 3 to reiterate
- 17:28it in Romans 310 to 19. So the Holy Spirit records those
- 17:33verses three times in Psalms 14 verses 2 to 3, Psalms 53, verses
- 17:392 to 3, and Romans 311 to 12. No one understands.
- 17:44No one seeks God. All have turned aside together.
- 17:47They have become worthless. No one does good, not even one.
- 17:51So the Holy Spirit is saying three times, no one understands,
- 17:55no one seeks God, no one is holy and no one does good.
- 17:59The fool who is the unbeliever does not seek God.
- 18:03The human race apart from God is universally corrupt and
- 18:07depraved. Unbelievers don't like to hear
- 18:09about their sin, but the Bible is clear on the subject.
- 18:13Proverbs 18 two says a fool takes no pleasure in
- 18:17understanding, but only in expressing his opinions.
- 18:21Fools don't seek God. They don't want to read the
- 18:23Bible. They don't want to listen to
- 18:25your gospel presentation. Let's look at Dee.
- 18:28Fools are defiled. Verse 3 says they've all fallen
- 18:31away. They have be, they have they
- 18:33have become corrupt. There is none who does good, not
- 18:36even one. If you go to the the book of
- 18:39Proverbs, which I mentioned 65 times, it has verses on fools.
- 18:43The very first one is Proverbs 17 and it says the fear of the
- 18:47Lord is the beginning of knowledge.
- 18:50Fools despise wisdom and instruction.
- 18:54And if you were to take the next Proverbs one, if you go to the
- 18:59next paragraph, verses 10 to 18, you will see that those fools
- 19:05will go down into a path of violence.
- 19:07OK, Jeremiah 422 says for my people are ignorant fools.
- 19:12They know me not. They are simple minded children
- 19:16who have no understanding. They are wise to do evil, but to
- 19:21do good they do not know how. And then E fools persecute the
- 19:27godly. It says have those who work evil
- 19:30no knowledge. This verse is at this verse God
- 19:34is asking a question, a rhetorical question.
- 19:36OK, God is saying, have they no knowledge?
- 19:39He's saying don't they know what they're doing?
- 19:41The fool is spiritually ignorant of the evil they do and of
- 19:44course its consequences. You know, we preach or share the
- 19:48good news of the gospel, but we always begin with the bad news,
- 19:52right? I always begin with Romans 323
- 19:55and tell a person that all have sinned.
- 19:58Every man, woman ever born in the world, exception of Jesus
- 20:01Christ has sinned. And then I tell him Romans 623
- 20:05that the the penalty, the consequences for that sin is the
- 20:09wages of sin is death. God is a righteous and just
- 20:12judge, and He must punish sin, and He will.
- 20:15And then I take him to Hebrews 927 that says, when we die you
- 20:18will face judgment. The unbeliever may know what sin
- 20:21is, but they deny its consequences or block them out
- 20:25of their mind. Only when the Holy Spirit opens
- 20:28their heart to understand can they have knowledge.
- 20:32Then has the line Who eat up my people as they eat bread, when
- 20:36it says they eat up my people as they eat bread.
- 20:39It's an analogy meaning fools devour God's people as it's as
- 20:43natural for us to eat bread in the morning when you have your
- 20:46toast. These fools persecute the godly.
- 20:49Roman Psalm 14 was about Israeli fools who ignored God.
- 20:54If Psalms 53 is about 400 armies that ignored God, they would
- 20:59persecute Israel. They thought they could come and
- 21:01conquer. They thought their gods were
- 21:03greater than the ones you're living God.
- 21:05But you know, they hate the ungodly.
- 21:07You know, I think of the violence that is out there with
- 21:10the LBGQ committee often, not always, but quite often, they
- 21:15target churches, they target Christian schools, and it has to
- 21:19be from Satan. I watched a video last night and
- 21:22I don't know what was going on, but there was some type of
- 21:24Christian service in Seattle, what Seattle, WA and Antifa was
- 21:28there blocking people to get in the service.
- 21:31And they actually surrounded a mom with a baby and that was
- 21:33what the video was. She's trying to go to this
- 21:35Christian service and they were blocking her, refusing her,
- 21:38allow her to go in. Now that's Seattle, but what
- 21:41happens when it's Los Angeles or out there?
- 21:44Matthew 510 says blessed are those who are persecuted for
- 21:47righteous sake, for theirs is the Kingdom of God.
- 21:51It's happening in Seattle and it could happen elsewhere.
- 21:54Thomas Watson said 300 years ago.
- 21:57This is a Christ hating world and a St. eating world.
- 22:02And lastly, it says and do not call upon God.
- 22:05This sounds like it might mean to pray, but it's probably more
- 22:09having to do with calling upon God by worshipping him or
- 22:12acknowledging him. And they can't do that because
- 22:15they lack spiritual understanding.
- 22:17So the just a little bit of application in .1.
- 22:20I just wanted to mention a few of the fools we have in the
- 22:23Bible. First Samuel 26 verse 21 we have
- 22:28the fool of Saul. Saul says I have sinned.
- 22:32Return my son David, for I will not harm you again because my
- 22:36life was precious in your sight. Behold, I have played the fool
- 22:41and have committed a serious error.
- 22:43So not only did Saul disobey Samuel in God, but he was a
- 22:48fool. And then of course, first Samuel
- 22:512525, you know the story of novel, OK, and you know that
- 22:57David's David's men protected him.
- 22:59And then on a feast day, David sent ten of his men to go to
- 23:03novel and say, can we have some food for the feast?
- 23:06And novel mock David and said no.
- 23:09And then when David heard about it, he is 400 men put on their
- 23:14weapons and they were going to go kill every person there but
- 23:17Abigail. A servant came to Abigail, and
- 23:20Abigail went and bowed before David, and she said, let not my
- 23:24Lord regard this worthless fellow novel, for as his name
- 23:28is, so is he novel is his name, and folly or foolishness is with
- 23:33him, and you know God would strike him down later.
- 23:36And of course, in Matthew 23, Jesus calls the Pharisees blind
- 23:41fools for their hypocritical act of, you know, ceremony, cleaning
- 23:45inside of the cup but being filthy, cleaning the outside of
- 23:50the cup but being filthy on the inside.
- 23:52And of course, we all know the parable of the rich man in Luke
- 23:561216. OK, I think it was 30 years ago
- 24:00that Lance said, you know, this was the only place in the Bible
- 24:02where God directly calls somebody a fool.
- 24:05And Jesus said in a parable, the land of a rich man produced
- 24:08plenty. And he thought to himself, what
- 24:10shall I do? For I have nowhere to store my
- 24:13crops. And he said, I will do this, I
- 24:16will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I
- 24:19will store all my grain and my goods.
- 24:22And I will say to my soul, soul, you have ample goods laid up for
- 24:26many years. Relax, eat, drink, be merry.
- 24:30Verse 20 But God said to him, Fool, this night your soul is
- 24:35required of you, and the things you're prepared, whose will they
- 24:39be? So is the one who lays up
- 24:41treasure for himself and is not rich towards God.
- 24:44So there's four fools we have in the Bible.
- 24:47You know, there's joy in knowing Jesus Christ and having the Lord
- 24:50of your life. We are no fools.
- 24:53We may make mistakes, we may send some time and we confess
- 24:57that sin, but the Bible tells us that it's the unbeliever that's
- 25:00the fool. Proverbs 14 seven says leave the
- 25:03presence of a fool, for there you do not need words of
- 25:07knowledge. Have you ever talked to a fool?
- 25:10And after a few minutes, you just want to get out of there,
- 25:11right? So fools deny God, fools don't
- 25:14see God, fools are defiled, and fools persecute the godly.
- 25:19Let's look at at #2 the destruction of fools.
- 25:23And 1st off, fools are in terror, OK?
- 25:26It says there they are in great terror where there is no terror.
- 25:31So if you compare Psalm 14 and Psalm 53, they both begin verse
- 25:375 with the line there they are in great terror.
- 25:41OK, But this is where the Psalms differ because Psalms 14
- 25:45continues with the line for God is with the generation of the
- 25:48righteous. But Psalms 53 on line 2 of verse
- 25:525 says where there is no terror there they are in great terror
- 25:58where there is no terror. So this verse says there's a
- 26:01place where there was no terror, where the wicked had No Fear of
- 26:06God. And most commentators believe
- 26:09that Psalm 53 was rewritten as after a great victory, and that
- 26:16victory would be the victory of Sennacherib when he surrounded
- 26:20Jerusalem with 185,000 Assyrian soldiers.
- 26:24This is one of the great stories in the Bible.
- 26:26How great is it? It's mentioned three times.
- 26:29Second Kings 18 and 19, Second Chronicles 32 and then Isaiah
- 26:35right in the middle of Isaiah 36.
- 26:37It tells the story and I won't take time tonight to read it,
- 26:40but it says his Syrian Army was encamped around Jerusalem.
- 26:43They're waiting to attack. They're not in terror.
- 26:45They have wiped out every army, every country.
- 26:48And if you read the story, the the generals go to Jerusalem
- 26:51wall and they're telling we conquered Lakish, we conquered
- 26:55this place, we conquered this place.
- 26:56What that what do you think your God's going to stop us?
- 26:59They're mocking the living God of the universe.
- 27:01And you know what happened? So there was no terror, but
- 27:04suddenly there was terror. The Angel of the Lord came out
- 27:08and killed 185,000 of them. So many people believe that is
- 27:12what this verse is talking about.
- 27:14Years ago, I think when I was in high school, there's a line of
- 27:17clothing that said No Fear. Do you remember that?
- 27:20No Fear. Well, we should change it to
- 27:22great fear. OK Dave Choppa, we need a
- 27:25T-shirt like that says great fear.
- 27:28But if you have Jesus Christ as your Savior, we are not fools
- 27:31and we're not in fear. First John 4718 says, But this
- 27:35is love perfected with us so that we may have the confidence
- 27:39for the day of judgement, because he is so also as we are
- 27:44in this world. There is No Fear in love, but
- 27:48perfect love casts out fear, for fear has to do with punishment,
- 27:52and whosoever fears has not been perfected in love.
- 27:56B fools will be destroyed by God.
- 27:58So verse 5 continues, and it's different from Psalms 14 because
- 28:03Psalms 53 continues in verse 5. For God scatters the bones of
- 28:07him who in camps against them. What does that mean?
- 28:11Well in the story of Sennacherib and the Assyrian army, Isaiah
- 28:153736 says the Angel of the Lord went out and struck down 185,000
- 28:21in the camp of the Assyrians. And when the people arose early
- 28:24in the morning, behold, they were all dead bodies.
- 28:28So for an ancient in ancient Israel or ancient times to leave
- 28:33a body unburied was very disgraceful.
- 28:37Even criminals who were executed were buried.
- 28:40Deuteronomy 2123 talks about that.
- 28:43You got to give a proper bearing.
- 28:45So for bones to be scattered, you can imagine 185,000 dead
- 28:48bodies. The birds of the air and the
- 28:50animals would eat them. That would be very shameful.
- 28:54Let's look at the rest of verse or the next part of verse 5.
- 28:58Fools will be fools will be shamed.
- 29:02And it says you put them to shame and did God put them to
- 29:04shame? So when you read the story,
- 29:06185,000 troops were killed. But it also says that I
- 29:12mentioned the envoys went to the wall of Jerusalem and they had a
- 29:15lot of mocking. The story actually in in Second
- 29:18Kings is 61 verses long. That's why I can't read it
- 29:21tonight. But one of time, one of the
- 29:23taunts was this. They came to the walls of
- 29:25Jerusalem and they said, don't let your God in whom you trust
- 29:29deceive you by promising that Jerusalem will not be given into
- 29:33the hand of the king of Assyria. And Second Chronicles says they
- 29:38even wrote letters of contempt to Hezekiah.
- 29:42God did deliver Hezekiah and Jerusalem and Sennacherib
- 29:46departed. He returned to shame into
- 29:50Nineveh, and he was murdered by his own sons.
- 29:53So God put the entire Assyrian army, including the king
- 29:57Sennacherib, to shame. Fools will be put to shame.
- 30:01There will be judgment on fools. A Christian, though, will never
- 30:05be put to shame. But God will shame the fools or
- 30:08the unbeliever. And I mentioned this verse makes
- 30:11me think of all the big shot atheists in our society.
- 30:14And I mentioned the three of them who who they think the
- 30:17unbelieving world is so intellectual.
- 30:20They think they are so smart with their many books and their
- 30:22anti God speeches. But they will be put to shame
- 30:25someday and we believers will be vindicated.
- 30:29Next fools will be rejected, it says, for God has rejected them.
- 30:34They're going to be put to shame because God has rejected them.
- 30:37And you remember the last verse in the parable, the rich fool,
- 30:42It says God said this night your soul has been required of you.
- 30:47You know, it's just a warning for all people who deny or
- 30:50oppose God. Hebrews 1020, Hebrews 10/31 says
- 30:55it is a fearful thing to fall in the hands of a living God.
- 30:59And all fools someday will fall in the hands of God unless they
- 31:02repent and believe. And let's look at the last
- 31:05verse, verse 6. The faithful will be delivered,
- 31:09and it says his salvation is by God.
- 31:13The psalmist says, oh, that salvation for Israel will come
- 31:16out of Zion. The psalmist was long for
- 31:18deliverance and restoration to come from the Lord.
- 31:22The psalmist knows that God dwells among his people and that
- 31:25His presence is in the temple in Zion, which is Jerusalem.
- 31:29In fact, if this Psalm was rewritten, you know, changing
- 31:32slightly changing Psalm 14 about the destruction of the Syrian
- 31:36Army, it was a great deliverance, and it was so great
- 31:39that the Holy Spirit records it three times in our Bible.
- 31:43But it also speaks of a future spiritual salvation.
- 31:47Psalms 14 and Psalms 53 may be the strongest verses in the
- 31:52Bible on the depravity of man. And then match that with Romans
- 31:56310 to 19. There is no one righteous, not
- 32:00even 1. Salvation for Israel did come
- 32:02out of Zion for for them at that battle, and it will come out for
- 32:07Israel in the future. Romans 11/26 says.
- 32:11And in this way all Israel will be saved as it is written.
- 32:15The Deliverer will come from Zion, He will banish ungodliness
- 32:19from Jacob, and this will be my covenant with them when I take
- 32:22away their sins. Salvation came out of Zion when
- 32:26Jesus died on the cross, making a way of salvation not just for
- 32:30Gentiles but for Jews and Gentiles.
- 32:33And then B. His restoration is by God.
- 32:36It says when God restores the fortunes of his people.
- 32:39God destroyed the Syrian Army, wiped them completely out, and
- 32:43he gave Judah and Jerusalem a time of peace.
- 32:46Hezekiah would have a few more years, maybe 15 more years to
- 32:51live. So the fools in Psalms 14 are
- 32:53Jewish and the fools in Psalm 53 are the enemies of God.
- 32:57God is going to destroy them and He will eventually.
- 33:01In lies Romans 11/26 says save the remnant of Israel and then
- 33:06see his celebration is in. God says let Jacob rejoice, let
- 33:11Israel be glad. The rejoicing and the
- 33:14celebrations would be brief because Hezekiah's reign didn't
- 33:18last too much longer. And then fools would take over.
- 33:22The kings would be and fools would lead Israel.
- 33:24And this will be a downfall. And God would judge Israel and
- 33:28they would be destroyed and taken to Babylon.
- 33:30But ultimately the salvation will come from the Lord when it
- 33:34comes to judge the world. And that will be a great day of
- 33:37rejoicing, a great day of deliverance.
- 33:39And So what can we learn from this short Psalm, the
- 33:43application? Well, I I was going to take a
- 33:45little bit of time talk about Proverbs.
- 33:48I mentioned in Proverbs 65 of the 117 times in our Bible, we
- 33:54have the word fool. But there's actually four kinds
- 33:57of people in Proverbs. I think I've shared with this
- 33:59before, but I'll do it again. OK.
- 34:01The first type of person Proverb mentions is a called in my
- 34:05translation simple. The King James may say naive.
- 34:09It literally means empty head. When that baby is born is
- 34:14literally an empty head. There's no knowledge in there.
- 34:16So that's the word simple. It's used 15 times in Proverbs.
- 34:21They're born simple. The second type of person in
- 34:24Proverbs is wise, and that's used over 60 times.
- 34:28OK, The third type is what we're talking about tonight, fools,
- 34:33and it's mentioned 65 times. And the fourth type of person in
- 34:37Proverbs is what we call a scoffer, and that's mentioned 13
- 34:40times. So you know, Psalms one, the
- 34:43very first Psalm says there are two paths.
- 34:46There's a godly path and there's an ungodly path.
- 34:50So the godly way, that simple mind, OK, that empty head, that
- 34:54knight head, mothers and fathers have a responsibility to fill it
- 34:59with knowledge, with biblical wisdom.
- 35:02And that child should become wise.
- 35:04And if they do, it says in Proverbs 1/4 to give prudence to
- 35:08the simple knowledge and discretion to the youth.
- 35:13In Proverbs 22, six says, train up a child in the way you should
- 35:16go. Even when he is old, he will not
- 35:19depart from it. So way #1 is the godly way.
- 35:22You take that simple mind, that empty head, and you fill it with
- 35:25biblical wisdom. OK, one of my favorite preachers
- 35:30I like to follow is Bodhi Bachman.
- 35:34And he says that if you send your children to Caesar to be
- 35:37educated, you should not be surprised when they come back as
- 35:41Romans. So too many parents are having
- 35:44their kids educated and not filling that mine.
- 35:48OK, let's talk about the ungodly way that Proverbs mentions.
- 35:51Same thing. You have that simple empty head
- 35:55with no knowledge. But if you don't fill it with
- 35:58biblical wisdom, or you let the Caesar or the Romans fill it or
- 36:02the school districts or whatever, they will become
- 36:05fools. Bodhi Bachman says that almost
- 36:0980% of children who grew up in churches, when they become
- 36:13teenagers and run off to college, they walk away from the
- 36:16faith. They they may have made a
- 36:18profession at VBS or something, but they're fools.
- 36:20They're not walking with the Lord.
- 36:23And so this is her greatest reminder.
- 36:26OK, I'm not done. I'm sorry.
- 36:27So the simple minded, then they come fools.
- 36:31And lastly, they could become scoffers.
- 36:34Have you talked to some of them? I was with the youth group 30
- 36:38years ago. And so we just had Easter, we
- 36:40just had Mother's Day, and some of the children that I wear in
- 36:43my youth group came to church those Sundays.
- 36:44And they're not walking with the Lord now.
- 36:47And there's hope for fools. There's hope for fools, you
- 36:50know, God will run after them. But scoffers, not so much hope,
- 36:54but there's some out there. So this Psalm is a reminder to
- 36:57us that the greatest disciples you mom and dads have are your
- 37:01children. You may never be a missionary,
- 37:03but actually we're all missionaries.
- 37:05The question is what kind of missionaries you are.
- 37:07Husbands, your greatest disciple is your wife.
- 37:09Mothers and fathers, your greatest disciple is your
- 37:11children. And you only have 18 or so years
- 37:15to fill that little precious mind with wisdom so they don't
- 37:19become fools. If you don't, they will go the
- 37:22way of the unbeliever. Let's talk now about unbelievers
- 37:26and believers. First off, let's talk about
- 37:28unbelievers. It says in our our Psalm there's
- 37:31no one righteous, not even 1/3 times Psalm 14, Psalm 53 and
- 37:35Romans 10. The whole world has become
- 37:38corrupt and chooses to live in defiance of God.
- 37:42When people ignore God or the idea that God exists, they
- 37:45ignore distinctions between good and evil.
- 37:48They are fools and they will face judgement.
- 37:50And yes, I'm talking about some of our relatives and it hurts to
- 37:54say that, but they are fools. But there, as I said, there's
- 37:57still hope for fools. Hopefully they haven't gotten to
- 37:59the next step in Proverbs, which is the scoffer, where there's
- 38:02little hope. OK, one commentator said, this
- 38:06Psalm gives a powerful description of the sinfulness
- 38:09and spiritual ignorance of the world in which the righteous
- 38:13must live. The destruction is not limited
- 38:15to a few enemies, but to the whole human race who persist in
- 38:19living as if there are no God. So if you have fools or you
- 38:23know, fools, we need to do 2 things.
- 38:25We need to pray for them and when you share the gospel with
- 38:27them again and again, we all know someone who's rejected God,
- 38:32the Bible, and the way of salvation, but Psalm 53 is a
- 38:35warning to them that they need to repent and believe in Jesus
- 38:38Christ before it's too late. We need to share with them.
- 38:42Second Timothy 2/24/26 says that that that they may come to their
- 38:47senses and escape the snare of the devil after being captured
- 38:51by him to do his will. They're not following God,
- 38:54They're following the devil right now.
- 38:56What about believers? You may think that this Psalm
- 38:59has nothing to do with me because I'm a believer.
- 39:01I'm not a fool. I am wise to salvation and I'm
- 39:04certainly I'm not a fool who doesn't believe in God or reject
- 39:07God. I believe in Jesus Christ.
- 39:09He died on the cross for me. He was buried and he rose from
- 39:12the dead and sits at the right hand of God and will come a
- 39:15second time to Take Me Home to be with him.
- 39:19Psalms 53 reminds us that Christians can act like atheists
- 39:23and fools sometimes. One commentator said.
- 39:27Every deliberate sin presupposes A functional atheist.
- 39:32When David sin, he didn't just get up and decide I'm going to
- 39:36commit adultery today. In the heat of the moment, he
- 39:40pushed all thoughts of God away to the back of his mind so he
- 39:44could have Bathsheba, his neighbor's wife.
- 39:46He was acting like an atheist, but we can do the same thing we
- 39:51are deliberately when we push God to the back of our minds so
- 39:55we can do what we want. So just five quick things need
- 39:59to remain in fellowship with other believers.
- 40:02You know, I'm talking to the choir tonight.
- 40:03You come out on Sundays, You come out on Wednesday nights.
- 40:06Our pastor is not here to tickle our ears on Sunday.
- 40:09He preaches Christ in all His Holiness and we need to be holy
- 40:13as he goes. God is holy.
- 40:16You need to be continued to read your Bible daily.
- 40:18You know you heard that saying the Bible will keep you from sin
- 40:22or sin will keep you from the Bible, right?
- 40:25God speaks to us through Scripture.
- 40:29Third, we need to sing songs, hymns, and spiritual songs in
- 40:33our heart throughout the day, keeping our minds on Jesus
- 40:37Christ, on His Majesty and his grandeur.
- 40:40Fourthly, thinking of heaven. And if you've been with us, with
- 40:44Pastor Lance and Thessalonians and almost every book of the
- 40:47Bible, you know, Lance said, the clearer you see the future, the
- 40:51cleaner you live in the present. First John 3 says, Beloved, we
- 40:55are God's children now, and what will be has not yet appeared.
- 40:59But we know that when he appears, we shall be like him,
- 41:02because we shall see him as He is.
- 41:04And everyone who has his hope in him purifies himself as he is
- 41:09pure. And #5 you need to run from
- 41:12anything that deadens your soul to Christ and blinds your eyes
- 41:17to his beauty. Sin can cover your eyes like
- 41:20cataracts and cloud your vision of God, but you need to keep
- 41:24your eyes on Jesus. Let's pray, Father in heaven,
- 41:27and thank you for that. We can look at this short Psalm
- 41:29tonight. And Father, I pray that every
- 41:32person in this room tonight would know Jesus Christ as the
- 41:35Lord and Savior in their lives. Father, I pray that if there's
- 41:38anybody that's not sure, anybody who's not following you tonight,
- 41:42that tonight would be the day of salvation and that they would
- 41:45obey you and follow you and they'd not be fools.
- 41:47And Father, I pray for my relatives, my nieces, my
- 41:51nephews, my relatives, and all the relatives we have here
- 41:54tonight that aren't following Christ, that perhaps grew up in
- 41:57church, that have wanted from the faith.
- 42:01On the CCC prayer letter, there's over 25 people asking
- 42:04for prayer for relatives who don't know Jesus Christ.
- 42:07Follow. They're fools.
- 42:09They're denying God. They may know of him, but they
- 42:11put him in the back of his mind and they need to repent and
- 42:14believe. Give us more chances to share
- 42:16the gospel with them. Help us to share Psalm 53 that
- 42:20that judgment will come and they can't escape that judgment to
- 42:24come. So we do pray for all of our of
- 42:26our relatives that they would come to Christ Father.
- 42:28We now pray for the baptisms that we're about to partake in.
- 42:31Jesus name, Amen.
