Latest / Hurdle with Emily Abbate / 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: Feeling Both Frustrated & Fine At The Same Time
Transcript
- 0:18Speaker 1: Hey, everybody, Emily and body here you are listening to
- 0:21Speaker 1: five minute Friday from Hurdle. I. Oh my god, my
- 0:28Speaker 1: head is in a thousand places I have. Let's see,
- 0:32Speaker 1: it's Friday. I leave for London next Thursday. I run
- 0:37Speaker 1: a marathon there next Sunday. I then hopefully am able
- 0:42Speaker 1: to walk okay as I travel to Paris and enjoy
- 0:47Speaker 1: Paris for a few days with one of my good friends,
- 0:49Speaker 1: and then I come home for a night to New York, I.
- 0:52Speaker 2: Fly to Chicago.
- 0:53Speaker 1: I'll be in Chicago supporting all of you marathonors that
- 0:56Speaker 1: might be there running. I will be hosting an event
- 0:58Speaker 1: with Tracksmith. I'll link the vote to that in the
- 1:00Speaker 1: show notes. But yeah, there's a lot going on, and
- 1:06Speaker 1: it is it's finally hitting me. It's it's hitting me.
- 1:10Speaker 1: I'm running a marathon next week, and I suppose that
- 1:16Speaker 1: I it hasn't hit me up until this point because
- 1:20Speaker 1: of what I've been navigating with my body. So because
- 1:27Speaker 1: what would a London marathon training CYC will be for
- 1:29Speaker 1: me without a little bit of wonkiness. If you weren't
- 1:33Speaker 1: a listener last year and you are a hurdler now, firstly,
- 1:36Speaker 1: thank you, Happy you're here, welcome. But I trained for
- 1:40Speaker 1: the London Marathon last year and what ended up happening
- 1:44Speaker 1: was during my final long run, I strained my soas
- 1:50Speaker 1: and that was so uncomfortable and painful that I had
- 1:55Speaker 1: to withdraw from the marathon. So for me, this has
- 1:59Speaker 1: truly been in a redemption training cycle. It's been an
- 2:02Speaker 1: opportunity for me to finally do this thing, this bucket
- 2:07Speaker 1: list race that has been on my radar for some time,
- 2:10Speaker 1: and generally speaking, the training has.
- 2:13Speaker 2: Been going quite well.
- 2:16Speaker 1: Now we are what is this seven eight, nine, ten
- 2:20Speaker 1: days out, nine days out by the time this comes out,
- 2:24Speaker 1: and I'm dealing with a little bit of tendonitis in
- 2:28Speaker 1: my knee really like under my knee my physical therapist
- 2:34Speaker 1: who you will be hearing from next week on the show.
- 2:38Speaker 1: And on that note to that effect, if you have
- 2:40Speaker 1: a specific question that you would like Luke my Pt
- 2:43Speaker 1: to answer, we are all ears and we want to
- 2:46Speaker 1: help you. So if you click in the show notes
- 2:50Speaker 1: it says leave me a voice message, I can guarantee
- 2:54Speaker 1: you that your question will get answered if you leave
- 2:58Speaker 1: me a voice message. Again, the opportunity to do that
- 3:01Speaker 1: is it's right here for you it's in the show notes.
- 3:04Speaker 2: Now.
- 3:04Speaker 1: With that said, Luke told me some tennis insertion of
- 3:08Speaker 1: my it band.
- 3:09Speaker 2: He is not really concerned.
- 3:12Speaker 1: But for me, like any level of discomfort makes me
- 3:15Speaker 1: kind of freak out as normal. And so over the
- 3:20Speaker 1: last two weeks and over this next week, the goal
- 3:24Speaker 1: is one hundred percent just maintenance.
- 3:26Speaker 2: I have done all of the training.
- 3:28Speaker 1: I am in a place right now where I can
- 3:30Speaker 1: go run a marathon. I am physically capable of doing it.
- 3:34Speaker 1: But I've never been prepping for a marathon. And instead
- 3:38Speaker 1: of running something like four or five miles a few
- 3:41Speaker 1: days a week in a long run, here I am
- 3:44Speaker 1: taking peloton classes and riding my bike and hitting an
- 3:48Speaker 1: occasional five k. Now I give you an example of
- 3:51Speaker 1: what my training has been like, just so you can
- 3:53Speaker 1: see how it has differed. Not to guide you if
- 3:57Speaker 1: you are going through some sort of wonkiness, ten to
- 3:59Speaker 1: eye this injury of your own. This is the plan,
- 4:02Speaker 1: this is the concept, This is the mission that I
- 4:06Speaker 1: have been in conversation with my PT and my coach about.
- 4:09Speaker 1: So this is what's working for me. I feel like
- 4:13Speaker 1: I'm rambling like a mad person. I'm anxious. I'm anxious,
- 4:16Speaker 1: and I'm accepting. I am fine, and I'm frustrated, And
- 4:20Speaker 1: all of this rambling is really to tell you that
- 4:24Speaker 1: it's okay to be both, whether or not you are
- 4:27Speaker 1: training for a marathon or you are thinking about how
- 4:31Speaker 1: to navigate a conversation that you don't want to have
- 4:34Speaker 1: with someone about how they may have made you feel.
- 4:36Speaker 1: I may or may may not be talking to myself
- 4:39Speaker 1: right now. The reality is that it can be two
- 4:43Speaker 1: things at once. It can feel hard but be possible.
- 4:47Speaker 1: It can be scary but doable. It can be exciting
- 4:53Speaker 1: but frightening like it can be all of these things right,
- 4:56Speaker 1: And it's okay that it's both because we can do both.
- 5:01Speaker 2: I feel like I am.
- 5:04Speaker 1: Channeling Bretne Brown or Glennon Doyle when I say that
- 5:08Speaker 1: we can do hard things right. And if anything, this
- 5:15Speaker 1: I don't even want to call it an injury. But
- 5:17Speaker 1: the wonkiness that I am feeling right now is reminding
- 5:20Speaker 1: me of my main goal going into next week, and
- 5:24Speaker 1: that main goal is to find the fun to show
- 5:29Speaker 1: up and begin. What an opportunity it is even to begin,
- 5:33Speaker 1: especially when I have been in positions before where that
- 5:35Speaker 1: opportunity has been stripped away. From me, and so I
- 5:40Speaker 1: have perspective that doesn't necessarily make it always feel easier
- 5:45Speaker 1: that I am in a place that I didn't hope
- 5:47Speaker 1: to be in. But with that perspective and understanding comes power,
- 5:53Speaker 1: and I am here to claim my power going into
- 5:58Speaker 1: this thing that I've been preparing for for way too
- 6:01Speaker 1: long now. So yeah, that's where I'm at this week.
- 6:06Speaker 1: My prompt for you this week is what is both
- 6:10Speaker 1: in your life?
- 6:11Speaker 2: And what is the both?
- 6:13Speaker 1: So, like I said, right now, I am fine, and
- 6:16Speaker 1: I'm frustrated, I am cautious, but I am capable. What
- 6:21Speaker 1: are you dealing with right now in your life that
- 6:23Speaker 1: is both?
- 6:25Speaker 2: And what's the both? And now a listener question, Emily.
- 6:30Speaker 3: I'm not sure this is the listener question that you
- 6:33Speaker 3: are really looking for, but I am going to ask
- 6:36Speaker 3: it anyways. I just discovered your amazing, amazing podcast at.
- 6:42Speaker 4: The beginning of August twenty twenty two, so I am
- 6:46Speaker 4: keeping current with your latest uploads while also working backwards
- 6:51Speaker 4: to all the amazing content that I have missed.
- 6:54Speaker 3: So my question is, are their key podcast that I
- 6:58Speaker 3: should make sure I listen to first or just keep
- 7:04Speaker 3: up with my current system of staying current while also
- 7:07Speaker 3: working backwards. Thank you again and I am loving your messages.
- 7:14Speaker 1: Heather, we love a new hurdler. Welcome, Welcome to the fam.
- 7:19Speaker 1: I hope that you are in the Secret Hurdler's Facebook group.
- 7:21Speaker 1: I hope that you are getting the Weekly Hurdle in
- 7:25Speaker 1: your inbox every Friday.
- 7:27Speaker 2: And I'm so so happy that you're here. So episode highlights.
- 7:31Speaker 1: You know, this is a question that I get often
- 7:34Speaker 1: from anyone when they hear that I'm a podcaster and
- 7:37Speaker 1: I have the show, They say, where should I start?
- 7:39Speaker 1: And yes, episode one is a really great place to
- 7:43Speaker 1: start so that you can get to know me. That
- 7:46Speaker 1: gives you a good foundation of who you're listening to
- 7:49Speaker 1: week after week. With that said, choosing favorite guested episodes,
- 7:54Speaker 1: it's really challenging for me. It's like choosing favorites choosing
- 7:57Speaker 1: a favorite child. Everyone always says not possible, but admittedly
- 8:02Speaker 1: a few episodes do come to the forefront when I
- 8:06Speaker 1: think about some of the ones that I've had a
- 8:10Speaker 1: lot of fun recording. First and foremost, there is no
- 8:14Speaker 1: such thing as enough time for a conversation with Nike
- 8:19Speaker 1: Run Club Global head coach Chris Bennett. If you have
- 8:25Speaker 1: ever listened to a Nike guided run. You know, Coach
- 8:28Speaker 1: Bennett's awesomeness having him on the show. That episode is
- 8:31Speaker 1: so full of wisdom and motivation, and it really the
- 8:35Speaker 1: conversation happened for me at a time that was really
- 8:38Speaker 1: really impactful. So I would definitely say that is a
- 8:41Speaker 1: great one to start with, regardless of whether or not
- 8:44Speaker 1: you identify as a runner. Another episode a favorite of
- 8:48Speaker 1: mine the live recording I did with Shlene Flanagan last
- 8:51Speaker 1: year in New York City leading up to the New
- 8:53Speaker 1: York City Marathon. She was just finishing up her project Eclipse, which,
- 8:58Speaker 1: for those of you that don't know, Shlene ran and
- 9:00Speaker 1: all of the six marathon majors within such a short time.
- 9:04Speaker 1: It was stellar, and I felt so honored that I
- 9:06Speaker 1: landed that opportunity to talk to her during that moment.
- 9:11Speaker 1: I adored my conversation with Neka Agumkay. She is a
- 9:15Speaker 1: WNBA player, such a resilient human and a lot of
- 9:19Speaker 1: really good takeaways in there. And then perhaps the last
- 9:23Speaker 1: thing I'll throw into the mix is my Chicago twenty
- 9:27Speaker 1: nineteen marathon recap. It's an episode that I always to
- 9:30Speaker 1: this day get a lot of messages about, and it
- 9:33Speaker 1: was just that day for me was magical. I did
- 9:37Speaker 1: something that I didn't know I was capable of. And
- 9:40Speaker 1: when I listened back to that, and sometimes I do
- 9:43Speaker 1: when I am in a rut or feeling as though
- 9:45Speaker 1: the world is just not working in my favor as
- 9:49Speaker 1: we all feel it, sometimes I am reminded of the
- 9:54Speaker 1: importance of resiliency and going after our big, scary, audacious goal.
- 10:01Speaker 1: I'm super curious, though, if you have a favorite episode,
- 10:04Speaker 1: if you want to share that episode on social, tag
- 10:07Speaker 1: the pod tag me, I'll repost all of your picks.
- 10:10Speaker 1: I'd love to know what content on the show has
- 10:14Speaker 1: truly truly resonated with you, and that way, hopefully I
- 10:18Speaker 1: can make you some more. Make sure you're following along
- 10:21Speaker 1: with Hurdle over on social. It's at Hurdle podcast. I
