- 0:00Speaker 1: We're back with cracking head coach Lane Lambert Lane. You
- 0:03Speaker 1: get a point in Ottawa a couple of nights ago,
- 0:06Speaker 1: two points on this road trip. Two pretty good efforts
- 0:08Speaker 1: as well so far. Take us through that game against
- 0:11Speaker 1: the Ottawa Senitors.
- 0:12Speaker 2: I thought probably that was our best game of the season.
- 0:16Speaker 2: You know, we thought we controlled the play a lot.
- 0:20Speaker 2: I thought we had, you know, many scoring chances. Their
- 0:25Speaker 2: goaltender played well, you know, and we talk about closing
- 0:31Speaker 2: out games, and you know, that's two in a row
- 0:34Speaker 2: that we haven't been able to close out. It's a
- 0:37Speaker 2: killer instinct type of situation that we have to establish understand.
- 0:43Speaker 3: It's a good lesson for us.
- 0:44Speaker 2: And killer instinct isn't always or closing out games isn't
- 0:48Speaker 2: always defending. I thought we had multiple opportunities to extend
- 0:53Speaker 2: our lead and failed to do so.
- 0:56Speaker 3: And at the end of.
- 0:57Speaker 2: The day, you know, it's one shot in the back
- 0:59Speaker 2: of you and now the game's going into overtime and
- 1:02Speaker 2: then into a shootout. So there's different ways to have
- 1:05Speaker 2: killer instinct, and one of them was to bury that
- 1:08Speaker 2: team the other night. And you know, we just have
- 1:11Speaker 2: to we just have to start to learn to understand
- 1:13Speaker 2: there's different ways to do that.
- 1:15Speaker 1: On that same vein. When you see the likes of
- 1:17Speaker 1: you know, Shane Wright, Jared mccannon coming so close getting
- 1:20Speaker 1: the opportunities but not being able to finish, is that
- 1:23Speaker 1: at least some type of positive for you knowing that
- 1:26Speaker 1: you can put yourselves in that position and then kind
- 1:29Speaker 1: of going along with that as well. That mindset, is
- 1:32Speaker 1: it something you can work on? Is it a mindset?
- 1:34Speaker 1: How do how do you work on closing out games,
- 1:37Speaker 1: burying those chances in those moments?
- 1:39Speaker 2: Well, it is, it is a mindset. There's different ways.
- 1:42Speaker 2: Like I said, for example, Montreal, it wasn't like we
- 1:45Speaker 2: were getting a ton of chances in Montreal. We came
- 1:47Speaker 2: back clot Our way back. That was going to be
- 1:49Speaker 2: a game that we were going to have to keep
- 1:52Speaker 2: the puck out of our net in order to close
- 1:54Speaker 2: that game out. And in those situations there's you know,
- 1:58Speaker 2: getting pucks deep, not turning pucks over, which you know
- 2:03Speaker 2: we did and it ended up coming back, we take
- 2:06Speaker 2: a penalty, and so there's just various ways of you know,
- 2:10Speaker 2: closing out the games. To see those guys get those chances,
- 2:13Speaker 2: that's great, It's not like they're not trying to score,
- 2:17Speaker 2: you know, but at the same time, you know, these
- 2:20Speaker 2: are situations. Johanny Neeman has a breakaway kind of thing,
- 2:23Speaker 2: So these are situations where guys you know, that's that's
- 2:27Speaker 2: part of finishing a team off.
- 2:29Speaker 1: Looking at Toronto here tonight, a couple of players out
- 2:32Speaker 1: of the lineup. Freddie Gudroau as out for four to
- 2:35Speaker 1: six weeks with the upper body. We found out today
- 2:37Speaker 1: Brandon Montour not with the team temporarily because of a
- 2:40Speaker 1: family issue that he's dealing with. It has to be
- 2:43Speaker 1: that next man up mentality. But when you look at
- 2:45Speaker 1: your lineup sheet and you're looking at your matchups, what
- 2:48Speaker 1: goes into replacing, plugging and playing guys that have to
- 2:52Speaker 1: take over for big pieces out of your lineup.
- 2:54Speaker 2: Well, you know, I mean, at the end of the day,
- 2:57Speaker 2: those players that you plug in, they have to step up.
- 3:01Speaker 2: You know, it's an opportunity for them. They have to
- 3:03Speaker 2: step up and do the job. And you know, our
- 3:07Speaker 2: team as a whole has to understand where we're at
- 3:10Speaker 2: and we have to you know, maintain our structure and
- 3:14Speaker 2: our discipline and continue to you know, play the game
- 3:17Speaker 2: the right way like we have been doing. And that
- 3:20Speaker 2: gives us an opportunity, you know, it gives you an
- 3:23Speaker 2: opportunity to win, regardless of you know, who's in, who's out,
- 3:27Speaker 2: whatever it might be. You know, two players that are
- 3:31Speaker 2: important players for us, and you know.
- 3:33Speaker 3: We've made adjustments and brought people in who filled those roles.
- 3:38Speaker 1: Even though your time here in Toronto was short as
- 3:40Speaker 1: an assistant coach, does it still bring back some good memory,
- 3:44Speaker 1: some fondness? What do you what do you remember about
- 3:46Speaker 1: this place? And how does it feel coming back for
- 3:48Speaker 1: the first time as a head coach and you left?
- 3:50Speaker 2: Oh yeah, no, it's it doesn't feel too too weird
- 3:54Speaker 2: because I wasn't here that long, just her for a year,
- 3:57Speaker 2: But certainly is a great experience. The city of Toronto
- 4:01Speaker 2: was a great city to be in. Live downtown about
- 4:04Speaker 2: ten minute walk from the rink here, you know, so
- 4:08Speaker 2: you know, you see some of the places that you
- 4:09Speaker 2: had maybe gone to or whatever, and you know, you
- 4:12Speaker 2: bring up memories that way.
- 4:15Speaker 3: You know. The organization itself was first class from top
- 4:18Speaker 3: to bottom. Absolutely terrific organization.
- 4:23Speaker 2: You know, the players competed and you know we ended
- 4:26Speaker 2: unfortunately on a bit of a sour nope, but we
- 4:28Speaker 2: were very close to having a good chance to win
- 4:31Speaker 2: the Stanley CuPy hout of last year. So I really
- 4:34Speaker 2: cherish and relish the time I spent here, you know,
- 4:38Speaker 2: and and it was great.
- 4:39Speaker 3: But I'm not here anymore, and we have to win
- 4:42Speaker 3: a hockey game to make.
- 4:43Speaker 1: We know, the big hitters, the Matthews, the Kneelanders on
- 4:47Speaker 1: this team, it's almost impossible to stop them. You can
- 4:50Speaker 1: only try to hope to slow them down. You know
- 4:52Speaker 1: them very well as well. What's the game plan tonight
- 4:55Speaker 1: at for Seattle going up against a team that's got
- 4:58Speaker 1: a couple of good guys who have gotten up some
- 5:00Speaker 1: good offensive starts.
- 5:01Speaker 2: Well, you're right, you know, they're just they're terrific hockey
- 5:04Speaker 2: players and that's that's why they are where they are
- 5:06Speaker 2: who they are, you know, getting paid the way they
- 5:08Speaker 2: get paid. Then you're right, you know you can. You
- 5:13Speaker 2: can do your best to stop them. They're always going
- 5:16Speaker 2: to get opportunities. I say, you know you can. You
- 5:20Speaker 2: can work to contain and contain their opportunities, and you
- 5:23Speaker 2: know we'll We'll just have to be a solid from
- 5:27Speaker 2: that standpoint as a team and as a group.
- 5:29Speaker 3: It's a five men
- 5:29Speaker 2: Mentality, and that's you know that's how we are anyways,
- 5:33Speaker 2: so this isn't anything new to us.
