- 1:14Speaker 6: You're trying to make it worse?
- 1:25Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:26Speaker 8: Well, okay.
- 1:31Speaker 3: You know, 24 hours ago, we got the news that
- 1:34Speaker 3: we had long been expecting to get at some point.
- 1:39Speaker 3: And we knew it was going to be sad. It
- 1:42Speaker 3: was going to be tough. But ultimately, we knew that
- 1:49Speaker 3: we would still have EJ around. He would still be
- 1:53Speaker 3: doing stuff. An hour ago, this hits my news feed,
- 2:01Speaker 3: and just everything comes to a grinding halt.
- 2:05Speaker 8: Chip Howard Sports Talk today, and I promise we're not
- 2:08Speaker 8: going to be so melty.
- 2:09Speaker 3: We're not going to be down, but the opening segment
- 2:12Speaker 3: of today's show basically... changed an hour ago.
- 2:17Speaker 8: This is Chip Howard Sports Talk, taken over today by
- 2:19Speaker 8: Jason and Jared. Jason Cornelius, Jared Hicks here on Sports Radio,
- 2:23Speaker 8: 1150 AM, The Zone, 93.7 FM. And, yes, we will
- 2:28Speaker 8: talk sports, but also Chip, he does it himself, but
- 2:31Speaker 8: he gives us the leeway to talk about things that
- 2:33Speaker 8: are important.
- 2:34Speaker 3: Well, and again, we're... There... I don't want to be
- 2:38Speaker 3: overly sad. I mean, it's sad that we have lost
- 2:41Speaker 3: Sir Patrick Stewart. But it's also a celebration of the
- 2:44Speaker 3: fact that this was a man who basically, for those
- 2:49Speaker 3: of us on this side of the Atlantic, didn't really
- 2:51Speaker 3: know who he was until about 40 years ago. Because
- 2:56Speaker 3: Next Generation starts in 87. But that's very key. It's
- 3:00Speaker 3: key because we are in the 60th anniversary of Star
- 3:03Speaker 3: Trek in general. So there is some significance to this.
- 3:08Speaker 3: But when he comes– when he appears as Captain Jean-Luc Picard,
- 3:16Speaker 3: he brings a gravitas to what most people at that
- 3:21Speaker 3: point thought was a very– I don't want to say corny,
- 3:24Speaker 3: but basically.
- 3:25Speaker 8: Oh, no. People thought Star Trek was corny as all get-up.
- 3:27Speaker 3: Because largely you had a fan base that was very
- 3:32Speaker 3: passionate and would skew very weird– into that passion. And
- 3:39Speaker 3: here you have an, and not just an English actor,
- 3:43Speaker 3: but a Shakespearean trained actor who brings a, a level
- 3:48Speaker 3: of gravitas and, and just, uh, iambic patameter beauty to
- 3:56Speaker 3: science fiction in, in, in a part that you actually feel, uh,
- 4:02Speaker 3: I mean, you could see this man being a captain
- 4:05Speaker 3: of just about anything.
- 4:07Speaker 8: First off, I just want to say, I've known him
- 4:09Speaker 8: since the 80s when Excalibur came out.
- 4:12Speaker 3: I'm just saying the vast majority of Americans.
- 4:16Speaker 8: And you brought up another very good point when it
- 4:19Speaker 8: comes to him and what he did to Star Trek. Because, again,
- 4:23Speaker 8: that was the nerdy kind of genre of science fiction
- 4:30Speaker 8: back then. at least because of television.
- 4:31Speaker 3: And, and again, and, and also, I mean, you know,
- 4:34Speaker 3: no offense to William Shatner, but at that point, he
- 4:36Speaker 3: played it very campy. He played it campy. And, and
- 4:38Speaker 3: he had kind of become a, a, a character of
- 4:41Speaker 3: himself to the point where when he does Saturday night live,
- 4:44Speaker 3: I believe in 1986. So about a year before next
- 4:48Speaker 3: gen comes out, he does the, the sketch where he
- 4:52Speaker 3: goes to a Star Trek convention and, and tells all the,
- 4:55Speaker 3: the nerds get a life. Um, But what's funny– and
- 5:00Speaker 3: then what's funny is conversely you go ahead to what
- 5:03Speaker 3: was I believe 1991, 1992 when Patrick Stewart hosts. And
- 5:09Speaker 3: of course the most famous– there's two famous things from
- 5:12Speaker 3: that episode. First is the way he pronounced salt. And
- 5:17Speaker 3: the second one was the erotic cakes sketch. It showed
- 5:21Speaker 3: that– because previously most people didn't realize he could do humor.
- 5:26Speaker 8: Mm-hmm.
- 5:27Speaker 3: He has those capabilities. And that was the beauty of
- 5:30Speaker 3: getting to see him over these past four decades is
- 5:34Speaker 3: just to know the wide range of That this man had.
- 5:39Speaker 8: Oh, he's hilarious. He's looked like– he and Morgan Freeman
- 5:44Speaker 8: have looked like they were 80 since they were like 20.
- 5:47Speaker 8: I know. And so that's just one of those things also.
- 5:51Speaker 8: But I was going to say at least– and now
- 5:52Speaker 8: I'm showing– continuing to show my nerddom. Like he brought
- 5:56Speaker 8: like a– I won't say he made Star Trek cool
- 6:00Speaker 8: because it was still science fiction. And for longer, like
- 6:02Speaker 8: science fiction has really just now started to come out
- 6:05Speaker 8: and people will embrace it a lot more. But like
- 6:08Speaker 8: he made Star Trek, like you said, he brought a
- 6:11Speaker 8: gravitas to it. He brought a seriousness to it. in
- 6:15Speaker 8: so many of those episodes of The Next Generation to
- 6:17Speaker 8: where that's why it lasted for so long. And without that,
- 6:20Speaker 8: it doesn't branch out into all these other genres that
- 6:22Speaker 8: we see now. Paramount Plus is loaded with Star Trek stuff,
- 6:26Speaker 8: and it does not happen without him and that show.
- 6:29Speaker 3: I mean, Next Gen was the first show created specifically
- 6:35Speaker 3: for syndication and an hour long, ran for seven seasons.
- 6:41Speaker 3: was very successful in fact uh you know uh sir
- 6:45Speaker 3: pat i'm just gonna say sir pat from uh he
- 6:48Speaker 3: had he had regrets about leaving the stage to go
- 6:52Speaker 3: do television and he even said if i knew it
- 6:55Speaker 3: was gonna go for seven years i would have never
- 6:57Speaker 3: agreed to it but at the same time he said
- 6:59Speaker 3: i can't imagine my career without it yeah because of
- 7:03Speaker 3: what all it allowed him to do we've got a
- 7:06Speaker 3: couple clips I want to play first if you'll do
- 7:10Speaker 3: the second clip this is from Next Gen the TV
- 7:13Speaker 3: series this is early on but again it just shows
- 7:18Speaker 3: how he could take a just beautifully written word but
- 7:25Speaker 3: in a science fiction show and turn it into compelling drama.
- 7:30Speaker 9: Question your loyalty.
- 7:34Speaker 10: You know There are some words I've known since I
- 7:36Speaker 10: was a schoolboy. But the first link the chain is forged,
- 7:42Speaker 10: the first speech censured, the first thought forbidden, the first
- 7:47Speaker 10: freedom denied, chains us all irrevocably. Those words were uttered
- 7:54Speaker 10: by Judge Aaron Satie as wisdom and warning.
- 8:00Speaker 3: Um, I mean, You could put that into stone, and
- 8:10Speaker 3: that applies for all of humanity.
- 8:14Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 8:15Speaker 3: And the way he reads that, the way he... And again, radio.
- 8:21Speaker 3: You don't even have the visual medium. Find the clip.
- 8:26Speaker 3: Watch how he just manifests his face to convey this, again,
- 8:32Speaker 3: just beautifully written... Powerful words. And by the way, the
- 8:37Speaker 3: judge is a fictional character. This was written specifically for
- 8:41Speaker 3: the episode. But of course, we're going to get into...
- 8:45Speaker 3: Part of the nerdom is also the fact that when
- 8:48Speaker 3: we get to 2000, it's perfect that he would be
- 8:55Speaker 3: Charles Xavier.
- 8:56Speaker 5: There is.
- 8:57Speaker 8: I mean, obviously there are, and I can't think of
- 8:59Speaker 8: them off the top of my head, but there are
- 9:00Speaker 8: very few roles that a person... is perfect for. And
- 9:09Speaker 8: he could not have been better cast. There is no
- 9:12Speaker 8: other person. Again, as superhero movies are coming out and
- 9:17Speaker 8: X-Men's coming out, there is zero other person that could
- 9:20Speaker 8: have been Professor Charles Xavier. Period.
- 9:23Speaker 3: Let's think about this. 1989, Michael Keaton is completely panned
- 9:28Speaker 3: as being cast as Batman until we see it. Robert
- 9:32Speaker 3: Downey Jr. in 2008. There are major reservations about him
- 9:36Speaker 3: being Tony.
- 9:37Speaker 8: Stark in Iron Man. And he is now, yes, he
- 9:39Speaker 8: is synonymous with that.
- 9:41Speaker 3: In fact, going into the X-Men movie, Hugh Jackman was
- 9:44Speaker 3: a completely unknown. And you're casting him as the most
- 9:47Speaker 3: important comic book character, dare say, of the last 50
- 9:49Speaker 3: years in Wolverine. But there was no doubt about it.
- 9:53Speaker 8: None.
- 9:53Speaker 3: When he agreed to be it. Because I'm sure there
- 9:56Speaker 3: was some hesitation from his part. No, that's another thing.
- 10:00Speaker 3: on to another title.
- 10:03Speaker 8: Unknown project.
- 10:04Speaker 3: Exactly.
- 10:05Speaker 8: I mean, other than Blade, there were no other superhero
- 10:09Speaker 8: movies that had done really anything. Especially on the Marvel side.
- 10:13Speaker 8: On the Marvel side, yes. Marvel superhero movies. I mean, yes. Batman,
- 10:16Speaker 8: but Batman was the only thing. Since Superman in the
- 10:19Speaker 8: early 80s with the Christopher Reeve Superman, there still wasn't anything.
- 10:24Speaker 8: batman did that then here comes blade they're like okay
- 10:26Speaker 8: we can do this so yeah even for him like
- 10:29Speaker 8: that was a huge leap even though it was.
- 10:31Speaker 3: A huge leap and it probably if nothing else gave
- 10:34Speaker 3: some credence to that hey they're fox is serious about
- 10:39Speaker 3: this you've got sir pat or sir patrick stewart ian
- 10:42Speaker 3: mckelland who was a longtime friend of his from the
- 10:44Speaker 3: stage uh agreeing to be uh magneto but um You know,
- 10:49Speaker 3: I've been listening to Jonathan Frakes and Brent Spiner's podcast,
- 10:53Speaker 3: Dropping Names, and it's a fun listen because all they're
- 10:57Speaker 3: talking about is Hollywood. But the one thing they keep
- 11:00Speaker 3: coming back to is just how much fun it was
- 11:03Speaker 3: to be friends with Patrick Stewart because, you know, again,
- 11:07Speaker 3: what you see on the screen is not who he
- 11:10Speaker 3: is necessarily behind the scenes. He is funny, but more so,
- 11:14Speaker 3: and this is probably the most impressive part, you can
- 11:17Speaker 3: recite a line from any Shakespearean play, just a line,
- 11:21Speaker 3: he will be able to pick up from that line
- 11:25Speaker 3: and keep going. That's just the recall and mentality he
- 11:29Speaker 3: has about performing Shakespeare. And he's done it so many times.
- 11:33Speaker 3: He's portrayed these same characters in multiple different ways. It's,
- 11:38Speaker 3: I mean, again, not trying to be sad, trying to celebrate,
- 11:43Speaker 3: but this was just one of those You know, we
- 11:45Speaker 3: did the show, it might have been two years ago,
- 11:48Speaker 3: when I said, okay, who are the actors, who are
- 11:53Speaker 3: the musicians that when they inevitably pass, as they all will,
- 11:58Speaker 3: is going to hit you hard? And, again, he was
- 12:03Speaker 3: 86 years old. You kind of knew it would eventually happen.
- 12:07Speaker 3: You just hoped that it wouldn't happen, especially before Doomsday
- 12:10Speaker 3: comes out, as he will be in Doomsday, and I
- 12:13Speaker 3: believe he's filmed... He's also already filmed footage for Secret Wars.
- 12:18Speaker 3: Of course, we don't know what context he's going to
- 12:21Speaker 3: be in either of those. But fortunately, we will have
- 12:26Speaker 3: him at least for those last two movies as Charles Xavier.
- 12:35Speaker 8: We are going to take a quick break, come back,
- 12:37Speaker 8: and I promise it's not just sad.
- 12:39Speaker 3: Now we go to sports.
- 12:40Speaker 8: No, because I want to talk about, and it will
- 12:43Speaker 8: be for sports, but I also do want to talk
- 12:46Speaker 8: about Ernie Johnson. Yes. And what... This means what they
- 12:51Speaker 8: have done, again, for sports broadcasting, what he's done, what
- 12:54Speaker 8: that show was, and what it's going to mean going forward,
- 12:58Speaker 8: especially with some of the things that you and I
- 12:59Speaker 8: were talking about the other day. We'll be back in
- 13:01Speaker 8: just a second. You're listening to Chip Howard Sports Talk,
- 13:03Speaker 8: taken over by Jason and Jared today on Sports Radio
- 13:05Speaker 8: 1150 AM in the Zone, 93.7 FM.
- 13:08Speaker 11: I'm Chad Jones. We know sports injuries hurt. And so
- 13:11Speaker 11: do injuries from car wrecks. But you didn't sign up
- 13:13Speaker 11: to be in a car wreck with someone who wasn't
- 13:15Speaker 11: paying attention. It was their fault. And now you're left
- 13:18Speaker 11: to deal with the consequences. You need to see a

- 14:26Speaker 14: Power.
- 14:28Speaker 15: Power.
- 14:30Speaker 16: Power.
- 14:35Speaker 6: Power.
- 14:55Speaker 8: I really forgot about the feedback part of this, of
- 14:57Speaker 8: the song.
- 14:57Speaker 17: It's like.
- 14:59Speaker 8: And then it came back and I'm like, oh yeah,
- 15:01Speaker 8: the feedback that they were doing for me, I was like,
- 15:03Speaker 8: what did we do here?
- 15:06Speaker 3: I just... I cannot hear that song without just seeing
- 15:10Speaker 3: the video in my head and then the VH1 pop-up
- 15:13Speaker 3: video notes popping up about tracking shot $ 275, 000.
- 15:17Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 15:20Speaker 8: I forgot about pop-up video. I mean, it gave you
- 15:23Speaker 8: a lot of good information about the video.
- 15:25Speaker 3: Well, I mean, it was the perfect way to repackage
- 15:27Speaker 3: music videos because, yeah, you're going to watch them, but
- 15:31Speaker 3: a lot of times you just are going to have
- 15:33Speaker 3: them on. But when you're trying to keep up with.
- 15:35Speaker 8: All the little tidbits. With all the little literal pop-ups
- 15:38Speaker 8: that they have.
- 15:39Speaker 3: Without that, I would not have known that R.I.P. Duncan
- 15:43Speaker 3: Sheik needed a break after barely breathing.
- 15:46Speaker 18: Yeah.
- 15:48Speaker 8: Chip, our sports talk today taken over by Jason and Jared.
- 15:50Speaker 8: We are on Sports Radio 1150 AM, the Zone 937 FM.
- 15:53Speaker 8: We love everybody continuing to listen to us on these
- 15:57Speaker 8: days that Chip is out, and he's allowing us to
- 15:59Speaker 8: continue to play radio here for the last decade plus.
- 16:03Speaker 8: So thank you all on this wonderful Thursday afternoon. First segment,
- 16:08Speaker 8: a little more sad. I mean, again, if you are
- 16:11Speaker 8: any kind of science fiction fan at all, you're going
- 16:18Speaker 8: to miss Sir Patrick Stewart as he has passed away today.
- 16:22Speaker 8: What was going to be the biggest news for you
- 16:24Speaker 8: and I, specifically going yesterday, getting ready into today, was
- 16:29Speaker 8: Ernie Johnson... announcing that he is stepping down at the
- 16:33Speaker 8: end of this season from inside the NBA. And you
- 16:36Speaker 8: and I talk so much about the business side of sports,
- 16:41Speaker 8: and you and I were huge on this when TNT
- 16:44Speaker 8: lost their NBA rights. And we're trying to figure out
- 16:48Speaker 8: what was going to happen to inside the NBA because, again,
- 16:51Speaker 8: there is no– the casual fan– does not watch the
- 16:59Speaker 8: pregame shows, the casual fan doesn't watch the postgame shows.
- 17:03Speaker 8: I would dare to say most times they're not watching
- 17:05Speaker 8: the games on the other networks because there is no
- 17:09Speaker 8: lead-in and there is no end. People were watching NBA
- 17:12Speaker 8: basketball because they would tune in to watch NBA tip-off
- 17:16Speaker 8: and then they would stay to watch or tune back
- 17:19Speaker 8: in to watch inside the NBA.
- 17:21Speaker 3: Yeah, halftime report and obviously after. If you want proof
- 17:26Speaker 3: about the significance of Inside the NBA and specifically Ernie Johnson,
- 17:34Speaker 3: Kenny the Jetsmith, Charles Barkley, and the addition of Shaquille O'Neal,
- 17:39Speaker 3: I want you to look at NBC's Football Night in
- 17:43Speaker 3: America and look at the cavalcade of clown car replacements
- 17:49Speaker 3: that that show has had on what is arguably the
- 17:52Speaker 3: most watched show NFL game each and every week.
- 17:57Speaker 8: It's the best game of the weekend.
- 18:00Speaker 3: And typically, when that show hits the airwaves, all other
- 18:04Speaker 3: football games have ended. But NBC has tried every amalgamation.
- 18:11Speaker 3: In fact, they even tried to recreate the Glory Days
- 18:16Speaker 3: of SportsCenter by having Keith Olbermann and Dan Patrick hosting
- 18:19Speaker 3: at one point. And that couldn't work. Now.
- 18:23Speaker 3: You have perpetually smiling puppet Jason Garrett. I do like
- 18:31Speaker 3: the addition of Maria Taylor. And I will say this.
- 18:36Speaker 3: Bringing in former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach.
- 18:40Speaker 8: Mike Tomlin.
- 18:41Speaker 3: Mike Tomlin, thank you. When you get on air, your
- 18:45Speaker 3: brain just wants to lock up. I've thoroughly enjoyed him
- 18:49Speaker 3: because I thought we were just going to get Boring
- 18:51Speaker 3: coach speech and kind of, I don't want to say
- 18:54Speaker 3: Bill Belichick-esque draft, but no, I mean, he's straightforward. He's
- 18:59Speaker 3: calling stuff out. He's saying it.
- 19:01Speaker 8: Like it is.
- 19:02Speaker 3: But you look at that show has tried so many
- 19:07Speaker 3: different personalities, and yet inside the NBA has been a stalwart.
- 19:12Speaker 19: Yeah.
- 19:13Speaker 3: For 27 years.
- 19:15Speaker 8: Well, you look at it from what NBC is trying
- 19:18Speaker 8: to do now that they have the NBA again, and
- 19:20Speaker 8: this is where I was saying when you and I
- 19:21Speaker 8: were talking the other night, like, Tracy McGrady, Carmelo Anthony,
- 19:28Speaker 8: and Vince Carter are three of the very best basketball
- 19:31Speaker 8: players to have ever played, and they are unwatchable. They
- 19:36Speaker 8: are absolutely unwatchable when it comes to pregame, postgame, halftime, everything.
- 19:41Speaker 8: And what's Kenny and Shaq and Charles have been able
- 19:47Speaker 8: to do is... And they say it. And if you
- 19:49Speaker 8: haven't watched... their the special that they did two years
- 19:53Speaker 8: ago inside the like it talks about like and it's
- 19:56Speaker 8: kind of like what I think you and I do
- 19:57Speaker 8: like we don't take ourselves seriously when we do this
- 20:00Speaker 8: we take the show seriously and We try to make
- 20:03Speaker 8: sure that we put on something very nice. People say, well,
- 20:05Speaker 8: we don't take ourselves seriously. And I think that's what
- 20:07Speaker 8: makes a difference and what Inside the NBA has been
- 20:10Speaker 8: able to do. And Ernie says that all the time.
- 20:12Speaker 8: He's like, I come on here, I try to let
- 20:14Speaker 8: these guys do what they do, and I just try
- 20:18Speaker 8: to steer the ship. And for 20, 30, no, he's
- 20:21Speaker 8: been there. Was it 27 years for him or 34?
- 20:22Speaker 3: Well, for him, it's... He's been with Turner, I believe,
- 20:29Speaker 3: for 34 years.
- 20:29Speaker 8: Okay, that's where I was getting confused.
- 20:30Speaker 3: Because when he was first brought on, he was like,
- 20:33Speaker 3: you're in charge of baseball. So you host the baseball show.
- 20:36Speaker 3: And then I think a couple years into that, then
- 20:38Speaker 3: he was like, now you're going to head up our
- 20:40Speaker 3: NBA coverage. And then once Charles and then Kenny came on,
- 20:45Speaker 3: that's when they developed the show inside the NBA, if
- 20:47Speaker 3: I understand the timeline right. But I think so much
- 20:50Speaker 3: of the success of that show stems from the fact
- 20:53Speaker 3: Ernie has a– has both that personality but also that
- 20:59Speaker 3: professionalism that you can't help but feel like you've got
- 21:04Speaker 3: to rise up to. I mean, Charles and Kenny and
- 21:08Speaker 3: Shaq love having fun, and they'll banter with each other,
- 21:11Speaker 3: they'll sometimes go at each other, and we've all seen
- 21:14Speaker 3: the clips of when things get a little too heated
- 21:17Speaker 3: to a degree. But the fact of the matter is, Ernie...
- 21:22Speaker 3: Even talks about in his stepping down speech that just
- 21:26Speaker 3: the amount of work it takes to prepare has taken
- 21:30Speaker 3: a toll on him, especially at his age and with
- 21:34Speaker 3: some of the health issues he's dealt with. And I
- 21:37Speaker 3: think that's what has made that show so successful is
- 21:42Speaker 3: his preparation in addition to being able to bring out
- 21:47Speaker 3: the best in your personality. Because anytime he's doing... you know,
- 21:52Speaker 3: March madness coverage.
- 21:53Speaker 8: Oh yeah. Which I'm so, when he said he's still
- 21:55Speaker 8: going to be like that, that at least made me smile.
- 22:00Speaker 3: He does. He, he's able to, he was able to
- 22:02Speaker 3: do that from day one when, when that arrangement started
- 22:06Speaker 3: and man, has it already been over a decade? So
- 22:11Speaker 3: you knew, again, we kind of knew this day would
- 22:13Speaker 3: eventually come. We especially knew something That this ESPN basically
- 22:19Speaker 3: contracting the show out from Turner was probably not going
- 22:27Speaker 3: to be long for this world just because of the
- 22:29Speaker 3: way the mothership works.
- 22:31Speaker 8: Well, and I'm glad you brought it up because that
- 22:33Speaker 8: brings up like it. I was glad when they made
- 22:36Speaker 8: the announcement that it was going to continue. But you
- 22:39Speaker 8: could also tell that it was never quite a good time.
- 22:43Speaker 8: a good puzzle piece or a good fit over at
- 22:45Speaker 8: ESPN because, and I heard somebody who was talking about
- 22:47Speaker 8: this yesterday, they had, and they didn't abuse it, but
- 22:52Speaker 8: they had free reign at Turner. Like the time for like,
- 22:55Speaker 8: there was no hard time out. Like there was like
- 22:58Speaker 8: the game ended and they're like, all right, how long
- 23:01Speaker 8: are you going to go? And you could fully recap,
- 23:04Speaker 8: really give them the ability to have a little fun,
- 23:07Speaker 8: but talk about the games that were going on and
- 23:09Speaker 8: you learn from that. With ESPN, it is such a
- 23:14Speaker 8: shortened cookie, like not even cookie, just the briefest non-real
- 23:21Speaker 8: version of what that is. And plus... It's not every
- 23:27Speaker 8: night that they've been on that NBC has their coverage.
- 23:31Speaker 8: And that's something even Charles has said. He's like, I
- 23:33Speaker 8: thought we were coming over here to do this. And
- 23:35Speaker 8: ESPN hasn't even allowed them to do that. And so
- 23:38Speaker 8: it's just like, that's what I'm glad to say. It
- 23:41Speaker 8: was obvious that there was going to be, this wasn't
- 23:45Speaker 8: going to be as long as anybody wanted. Even if
- 23:47Speaker 8: Ernie didn't come on it. And he's too professional to
- 23:51Speaker 8: say how it's being done now isn't what I want
- 23:54Speaker 8: to do. But that has to play a part.
- 23:57Speaker 3: Oh, I mean, I'm sure it does. And also, everything
- 24:04Speaker 3: going on behind the scenes, I mean, they're even bringing
- 24:07Speaker 3: it up on the show. It's like, you know, we
- 24:09Speaker 3: started with Turner, and it was WBD, and I guess
- 24:12Speaker 3: now we're Skydance. Y'all, that is just a mess in
- 24:17Speaker 3: and of itself, and I cannot imagine anyone who has
- 24:21Speaker 3: been working for either of those entities... just having any
- 24:26Speaker 3: kind of feeling of job security.
- 24:28Speaker 8: No.
- 24:28Speaker 3: Because that is the dynamic that, unfortunately, so much of
- 24:33Speaker 3: our media is moving into, these uber-conglomerates where it is
- 24:42Speaker 3: largely driven not only by private equity, but a lot
- 24:45Speaker 3: of debt that has to be repaid. And guess what?
- 24:52Speaker 3: People aren't watching... these traditional platforms to the same degree.
- 24:57Speaker 3: So how you make your money back is going to
- 24:59Speaker 3: largely be through advertising and paying those stupid contracts. But
- 25:05Speaker 3: it's largely through advertising, which means you've got to have
- 25:08Speaker 3: these hard outs and shortened broadcast windows because you're trying
- 25:14Speaker 3: to cram as much advertising time in as you can,
- 25:17Speaker 3: as we'll talk about when we get to college football.
- 25:20Speaker 3: If you want to know where the breaking point is
- 25:22Speaker 3: going to be, It's going to be these ad breaks.
- 25:24Speaker 3: So anyway, like I say, I'm glad we get the
- 25:28Speaker 3: rest of this year. I'm glad he's still going to
- 25:30Speaker 3: be doing projects. He even talked about the production company
- 25:36Speaker 3: he started up. I love that he's still going to
- 25:38Speaker 3: be doing March Madness. I would love to see him
- 25:41Speaker 3: involved more with Major League Baseball. Of course, next year,
- 25:44Speaker 3: probably not even going to have it, so he'll have
- 25:46Speaker 3: more time to figure that out. But yeah, I mean,
- 25:50Speaker 3: you cannot understate... How great this show is, and if
- 25:54Speaker 3: you want proof, look how many Emmys it's won, and
- 25:58Speaker 3: especially consecutively compared to everything else.
- 26:01Speaker 8: Compared to everything else, and I get it from the
- 26:06Speaker 8: dollar standpoint. Again, you and I talk about it, and
- 26:09Speaker 8: we're going to talk more about it in this show.
- 26:11Speaker 8: The business of sports, and especially now the unfortunate side
- 26:16Speaker 8: effect of the business of sports broadcasting. However, and probably
- 26:20Speaker 8: because TNT didn't have anything else to do, like when
- 26:24Speaker 8: it came to their NBA broadcast, that's also why they
- 26:26Speaker 8: probably didn't have the money to really go up against
- 26:29Speaker 8: NBC and the Mothership and Prime to really keep that going.
- 26:33Speaker 8: but their show showed and why ESPN wanted to grab
- 26:37Speaker 8: it showed that people will watch a good broadcast that
- 26:41Speaker 8: can have fun, but is going to also really break
- 26:44Speaker 8: down sports. And I don't think the, and I'll just
- 26:48Speaker 8: say it. I don't think the Pat Macification of, of
- 26:52Speaker 8: everything is, is really taking the, that viewpoint into it.
- 26:57Speaker 8: I mean, Game day isn't the same anymore. And yet
- 27:00Speaker 8: you can look at the evolution from both, because I
- 27:04Speaker 8: know they started around the same time, but the evolution
- 27:07Speaker 8: of game day with the evolution of inside the NBA.
- 27:10Speaker 8: You have a, whether it is Reese Davis or Chris
- 27:14Speaker 8: Fowler before that, that were right there and very prepared
- 27:18Speaker 8: in how to drive the show. You have the funny guy,
- 27:22Speaker 8: whether it's Coach or Charles Barkley. You have the good
- 27:25Speaker 8: former player, whether it's Herb Street or Kenny Jetsmith. And
- 27:30Speaker 8: you just keep that going. And so you can see
- 27:32Speaker 8: that evolution. And now, like, if they're going to pull...
- 27:36Speaker 8: Because you and I can both agree inside the NBA
- 27:39Speaker 8: is not like they're going to because Charles isn't going
- 27:42Speaker 8: to keep going. No, there's zero because his contract's up
- 27:44Speaker 8: at the end of this year, too. And so if
- 27:46Speaker 8: Ernie's not going to be there, Charles is not going
- 27:48Speaker 8: to be there. And I think if Charles is not
- 27:51Speaker 8: going to be there, Shaq will be will not be there.
- 27:53Speaker 8: I don't think Kenny will be the first one to
- 27:55Speaker 8: say he's not doing I think. If Charles and Shaq stayed,
- 27:58Speaker 8: Kenny would stay. With whomever they tried to bring in
- 28:02Speaker 8: the host. Charles is not going to stay because he's
- 28:03Speaker 8: not going to be there. You saw how he broke that.
- 28:07Speaker 8: They were all sad. Charles was distraught with that. And
- 28:12Speaker 8: he had to know, obviously.
- 28:15Speaker 3: I'm sure this was a discussion that EJ had with
- 28:19Speaker 3: them probably over the weekend so that there was plenty
- 28:22Speaker 3: of lead time to come into it. But It's still
- 28:25Speaker 3: tough once the camera and the lights are on.
- 28:28Speaker 8: And he's actually saying it and showing it with the
- 28:31Speaker 8: emotion that he has had. But yeah, how these pre-
- 28:35Speaker 8: and post-game shows are is just... Inside the NBA was, again,
- 28:42Speaker 8: the Emmys show it. It was the gold standard of that.
- 28:46Speaker 8: And I think too many of the networks now have
- 28:49Speaker 8: gotten away from that. thinking that it has to be
- 28:53Speaker 8: all the fun part of things, and we're not seeing
- 28:56Speaker 8: what makes... Again, why do they keep winning Emmys?
- 28:59Speaker 5: Exactly.
- 29:01Speaker 8: And we don't see that. No.
- 29:04Speaker 3: And again, for the last decade, every network has tried
- 29:08Speaker 3: to replicate what they do with their respective shows. Some
- 29:12Speaker 3: have come close. I flat out said Paramount Plus's Champion
- 29:18Speaker 3: League team That's probably number two, and then obviously once
- 29:22Speaker 3: Inside the NBA rolls off in its current iteration, I'm
- 29:25Speaker 3: going to say that's an easy number one. But a
- 29:27Speaker 3: lot of that is also Kate Scott. She has those
- 29:29Speaker 3: same dynamics Ernie has from the standpoint of you have
- 29:32Speaker 3: these personalities, Terry and Henri, Jamie Carragher, Big Meeks. It
- 29:38Speaker 3: would be real easy to let that kind of go off.
- 29:40Speaker 3: the rails because you've got an Arsenal, Man City, and
- 29:43Speaker 3: a Liverpool player together. But Kate's able to just keep
- 29:47Speaker 3: it fun, but also make it informative. And that's where Ernie,
- 29:51Speaker 3: I think, excels.
- 29:51Speaker 8: Oh, that's where he lives.
- 29:53Speaker 3: That is what these shows are supposed to be. And
- 29:56Speaker 3: if you look at all the other shows, that's what
- 29:58Speaker 3: they've gone away from because they think people don't want that.
- 30:00Speaker 3: They just want betting odds.
- 30:02Speaker 8: We're going to take a break. This one's going to
- 30:04Speaker 8: be brought to you by SevChex. Then the High School
- 30:06Speaker 8: Report is coming up in just a second. You're listening
- 30:09Speaker 8: to Chip Howard Sports Talk, taken over by Jason and Jared.
- 30:11Speaker 8: Sports Radio 1150 AM, The Zone, 93.7 FM.
- 30:15Speaker 1: Before you drive on the highways and back roads to
- 30:17Speaker 1: follow your favorite team this fall, stop by Sevchak Service Center.
- 30:21Speaker 1: Sevchak's been keeping Brazos Valley residents safe on the road
- 30:25Speaker 1: for well over 50 years. Whether it's a road safety check, tires,
- 30:29Speaker 1: oil changes, or something a little more complicated, Pat and
- 30:32Speaker 1: his staff have the experience and commitment that will give
- 30:35Speaker 1: you the security you need for a trip across town
- 30:38Speaker 1: or across the country. Step Check Service Center, 2200 Longmire,
- 30:42Speaker 1: just down from the post office in College Station.
- 30:46Speaker 3: This is C & J Barbecue.
- 30:48Speaker 7: Okay, so for the ad, I'm thinking fog machines, laser lights,
- 30:52Speaker 7: maybe a.
- 30:52Speaker 3: Do kids eat free?
- 30:54Speaker 8: Uh, yes.
- 30:55Speaker 3: Like, actually free? Yes, every Wednesday night. So I can
- 30:58Speaker 3: get free barbecue?
- 30:59Speaker 8: That's how kids eat free works, buddy.
- 31:01Speaker 20: Wednesday's my favorite day now.
- 31:04Speaker 3: See, no fog machine needed.
- 31:05Speaker 21: Oh, man.
- 31:06Speaker 20: Kids eat free every Wednesday night at C & J Barbecue.
- 31:09Speaker 3: Great food.
- 31:10Speaker 22: Happy kids.
- 31:11Speaker 20: C & J Barbecue. Because dinner shouldn't be another battle.
- 31:16Speaker 11: The Louie Bellina Show, presented by CC Electric.
- 31:19Speaker 23: Glad to see Nashville's own Paramore get into the top
- 31:22Speaker 23: 15 there. And, you know, I think Seven Nation Army,
- 31:25Speaker 23: I don't know how.
- 31:26Speaker 8: It's not number one. Mr. Brightside is up there, too.
- 31:30Speaker 8: And you hate the killers.
- 31:32Speaker 23: Well, in terms of like cultural significance, like you can
- 31:34Speaker 23: go to, I was at a wedding, like, I don't know,
- 31:36Speaker 23: maybe it was last summer with my wife and her family.
- 31:39Speaker 23: Like one of her, one of her cousins was getting
- 31:41Speaker 23: married and you know, these are all like 23 year
- 31:44Speaker 23: olds and I am not 23. I am at this time,
- 31:48Speaker 23: I was like 42 or 43 years old.
- 31:50Speaker 8: And Mr.
- 31:51Speaker 23: Brightside comes on and like everybody in their forties knows
- 31:54Speaker 23: every word and everybody in their twenties knows every word.
- 31:56Speaker 23: And I think that's sort of a sign of a
- 31:59Speaker 23: transcendent song for sure, that all the young generation still
- 32:02Speaker 23: knows everything about it. I think Seven Nation Army's in
- 32:04Speaker 23: that category. There's probably a bunch of these songs that, like,
- 32:07Speaker 23: you know, I don't have as much knowledge of.
- 32:16Speaker 3: I'm your boogeyman, that's what I am.
- 32:20Speaker 13: I'm here to do whatever I can.
- 32:23Speaker 12: Be it early morning.
- 32:25Speaker 14: Late afternoon, or at midnight.
- 32:29Speaker 24: It's never too soon.
- 32:31Speaker 17: To want to please you, to want to keep you,
- 32:35Speaker 17: to want to do it all.
- 32:38Speaker 22: Welcome into the High School Report.
- 32:40Speaker 9: I'm Caleb Rapley, and today we are jumping out to
- 32:43Speaker 9: the Polaris Fun Center phone line to visit with the
- 32:45Speaker 9: head coach of the A & M Consolidated Lady Tigers
- 32:49Speaker 9: volleyball team, Ms.
- 32:51Speaker 22: Laura Korenik. Coach, thanks for joining me today.
- 32:53Speaker 3: Yes, of course.
- 32:55Speaker 9: It has been a fantastic regular season for your Lady Tigers,
- 33:00Speaker 9: 34-8 record, going 12-2 in district play, ending up with
- 33:05Speaker 9: a share of the district championship.
- 33:08Speaker 22: So how proud are you of your team.
- 33:11Speaker 9: And the great performances that they've put up over the
- 33:14Speaker 9: last few months?
- 33:16Speaker 25: I'm super proud. It's a great group of girls. We
- 33:20Speaker 25: are actually pretty young coming into this season. We lost
- 33:24Speaker 25: six seniors last year that all played at the state finals.
- 33:28Speaker 25: And so just having to fill in those shoes and
- 33:30Speaker 25: having a new group of girls come in and for
- 33:32Speaker 25: them to be able to have such a great season
- 33:35Speaker 25: with that kind of youth, I'm really super proud of them.
- 33:40Speaker 9: Yeah, so like you mentioned, very young team. And that's
- 33:45Speaker 9: one of the things about high school athletics and any sport,
- 33:49Speaker 9: no matter the size of the school, it's always very
- 33:52Speaker 9: interesting at the beginning of a new season to see
- 33:56Speaker 9: what freshmen and sophomores are going to have to step
- 33:59Speaker 9: up and contribute. With your Lady Tigers, it looks like
- 34:03Speaker 9: they've all done a very good job. As I mentioned, 34-8,
- 34:05Speaker 9: that's very hard to do. in the district that you're in.
- 34:10Speaker 9: So who are some of the players that have stepped
- 34:12Speaker 9: up this year that maybe weren't as big of a
- 34:14Speaker 9: part of the team last year but are really contributing
- 34:17Speaker 9: this season?
- 34:18Speaker 25: The first one that comes to mind that has really
- 34:21Speaker 25: stepped up this season is Macy Downing. She took on
- 34:26Speaker 25: the role of libero this year, which is not something
- 34:28Speaker 25: that she did last year. And so she's been on
- 34:31Speaker 25: the floor. She's played every set of every game this season,
- 34:35Speaker 25: even injured. She went out there and she played. She
- 34:37Speaker 25: couldn't serve, but she still played for, I think it
- 34:39Speaker 25: was like two or three games. And so just her
- 34:43Speaker 25: being on the floor, she's super small and scrappy and
- 34:47Speaker 25: a great communicator. I think that's been a huge part
- 34:50Speaker 25: of our success is just having her be vocal on
- 34:54Speaker 25: the floor and just get out there and get after it.
- 34:57Speaker 9: Now, this is only your second season as the head
- 35:00Speaker 9: coach at A & M Consolidated. Last year in your
- 35:03Speaker 9: first season, went all the way to the state championship game.
- 35:07Speaker 22: A great run.
- 35:08Speaker 9: Unfortunately, came up short to Highland Park in the final.
- 35:12Speaker 9: So how much did that game and that run last year,
- 35:15Speaker 9: you know, really show you what this program is capable
- 35:17Speaker 9: of and add that hunger to get back.
- 35:20Speaker 22: To the top?
- 35:22Speaker 21: Yeah, I mean.
- 35:23Speaker 25: I think all of the girls coming in this season,
- 35:25Speaker 25: you know, we were, we made it so far and
- 35:28Speaker 25: it's like, okay, how do we do this again? How
- 35:30Speaker 25: do we, how do we replicate this and how do
- 35:31Speaker 25: we make this happen? Um, and so a lot of
- 35:33Speaker 25: conversations have just been about, you know, the day in
- 35:36Speaker 25: and day out grind. Um, and then just being a
- 35:39Speaker 25: great team. I think that's one of our big goals.
- 35:41Speaker 25: And one of the things that we really focus on is, uh,
- 35:45Speaker 25: team first mentality and like whatever your role is, whether
- 35:47Speaker 25: you're playing a bunch, whether you're sitting on the bench, um,
- 35:50Speaker 25: you're supporting the team and you're helping us grow. We
- 35:53Speaker 25: have a, we have a group of girls that don't
- 35:55Speaker 25: get a whole lot of playing time, but they contribute to,
- 35:57Speaker 25: they have, they have been a huge part of our
- 36:00Speaker 25: success because of how hard they work at practice and
- 36:02Speaker 25: how much they challenge each other. And the other thing
- 36:05Speaker 25: is just like having fun. We try to not focus
- 36:09Speaker 25: too much on what other people are doing and just
- 36:11Speaker 25: focus on what we do. And so that's, you know,
- 36:14Speaker 25: we wanted to make it back to the state championship again,
- 36:17Speaker 25: and we knew we're going to have to go through
- 36:18Speaker 25: some tough opponents to get there. And we scheduled a
- 36:21Speaker 25: pretty tough, preseason we played Duncanville twice you know and
- 36:25Speaker 25: they're ranked in you know the top five and six
- 36:28Speaker 25: day so we played against a really some really good
- 36:31Speaker 25: opponents and I think got just got a lot of
- 36:33Speaker 25: experience and got a lot of assurance of what we're
- 36:35Speaker 25: able to do against really good teams so.
- 36:38Speaker 9: Both of the two seasons that you have been the
- 36:41Speaker 9: head coach for the Lady Tigers over 30 wins in
- 36:45Speaker 9: the conversation for the district championship last year and then
- 36:49Speaker 9: getting a share of it this season So a lot
- 36:51Speaker 9: of times when there's a new regime, a new head coach,
- 36:55Speaker 9: any sport, any level, a lot of times there's at
- 36:58Speaker 9: least one season of figuring out the new system. But
- 37:01Speaker 9: what has allowed you to step in and this year
- 37:05Speaker 9: and last year have immediate success?
- 37:08Speaker 25: Well, I think, I mean, I just have to say
- 37:10Speaker 25: it's the group of kids. Last year having six seniors
- 37:15Speaker 25: was tough because you don't want to just go in
- 37:17Speaker 25: and change everything. They had a lot of success. the
- 37:20Speaker 25: previous year before I came. And so there's things that
- 37:23Speaker 25: they were doing that, that worked. And so we wanted
- 37:25Speaker 25: to use those things and capital capitalize on those and
- 37:28Speaker 25: then try to add some, you know, some new things
- 37:31Speaker 25: to our program. Um, I think a great, I have
- 37:35Speaker 25: to give credit to our strength coach. Uh, he's been here.
- 37:38Speaker 25: This will be his fifth season. And so like last
- 37:40Speaker 25: year's seniors, he had them for four whole years. And
- 37:44Speaker 25: I mean, we're, we're a pretty like salty team in
- 37:47Speaker 25: terms of like being in really good shape. Um, we're small,
- 37:51Speaker 25: but we're fast and we can jump high. And I
- 37:53Speaker 25: think a lot of that goes to what we do
- 37:55Speaker 25: in off season and what we do in the weight
- 37:57Speaker 25: room and things like that. So I would say that's
- 37:59Speaker 25: a big contributor of coming in and being able to
- 38:01Speaker 25: walk in for two years and have, you know, so
- 38:04Speaker 25: many wins is we have tremendous athletes, like they're trained
- 38:06Speaker 25: to be athletes. Another thing that I think is really
- 38:10Speaker 25: super important with like all of my girls play club
- 38:13Speaker 25: that helps me out so much. So they play volleyball
- 38:16Speaker 25: at a high level and, walking in the door. So
- 38:18Speaker 25: we get to just add to that and figure out
- 38:20Speaker 25: how to put all the pieces together at that high level.
- 38:25Speaker 9: So as we get ready for the first round, the
- 38:30Speaker 9: bi-district round of the UIL Volleyball State Tournament in 5A
- 38:35Speaker 9: Division I, I imagine that it's difficult for you and
- 38:41Speaker 9: the players to not look ahead to later on in
- 38:44Speaker 9: the playoffs. where you maybe match up again with Highland
- 38:48Speaker 9: Park in the state championship game. But how difficult is
- 38:52Speaker 9: it for you to keep your players focused on just
- 38:55Speaker 9: taking it one round at a time?
- 38:58Speaker 25: I would say this group is not too bad. Our
- 39:01Speaker 25: leaders on the floor have had a lot of experience.
- 39:04Speaker 25: Kendall Newton is a junior. She's our setter. And then
- 39:08Speaker 25: Harper Koenig, she's an outside hitter. She's a six row,
- 39:11Speaker 25: you know, she plays all the way around. They both
- 39:13Speaker 25: played at the state tournament and they know it is,
- 39:16Speaker 25: it is one day at a time. It's one point
- 39:18Speaker 25: at a time. And so that's something that we talk
- 39:20Speaker 25: about a lot in huddles and timeouts. And, you know,
- 39:23Speaker 25: if we're down by two or three points, we're like,
- 39:25Speaker 25: it's okay it's just two points like we we can
- 39:27Speaker 25: make this up um i know the future is also
- 39:32Speaker 25: a huge motivator for us because we could potentially see
- 39:35Speaker 25: cshs again in the fourth round um if we can
- 39:38Speaker 25: both make it there i know that was a huge
- 39:40Speaker 25: contributor of us like of our success last year we
- 39:43Speaker 25: were like we're not we want to see them again
- 39:45Speaker 25: we want another chance at them So that's something to
- 39:48Speaker 25: look forward to, I guess. And it kind of motivates
- 39:51Speaker 25: the girls and makes it fun, makes it more fun,
- 39:54Speaker 25: you know, kind of having that long-term goal. And, of course,
- 39:57Speaker 25: Highland Park would be amazing. If we could go match
- 39:59Speaker 25: up with them again in the state finals, that would
- 40:01Speaker 25: be just fun and kind of meant to be, I guess.
- 40:05Speaker 9: So you mentioned the Lady Cougars of College Station split
- 40:09Speaker 9: with them this year, winning at home, losing on the road.
- 40:13Speaker 9: But how much does having that rivalry of having a
- 40:16Speaker 9: school that, You know, all of the players are very
- 40:18Speaker 9: familiar with each other.
- 40:19Speaker 22: I mean, I would imagine a lot of them probably
- 40:21Speaker 22: grew up together.
- 40:23Speaker 9: But how much of an advantage is it for both
- 40:25Speaker 9: schools to have such a heated rivalry that both teams
- 40:29Speaker 9: are always very good? So it's kind of the iron
- 40:33Speaker 9: sharpens iron mentality. How much fun is that rivalry?
- 40:37Speaker 25: I mean, it's so much fun. You have girls that have,
- 40:41Speaker 25: like you said, they play junior high ball together. They
- 40:43Speaker 25: play club together. They've grown up together. So it's very
- 40:49Speaker 25: intimate whenever you're playing them. Like, you know them. We
- 40:51Speaker 25: kind of know each other in and out. And so
- 40:53Speaker 25: I think it makes it even more of a challenge
- 40:56Speaker 25: to beat each other. So it's just so much fun
- 41:00Speaker 25: having that cross town. And we're both, you know, Coach
- 41:05Speaker 25: and I are both excited to hopefully see each other.
- 41:07Speaker 25: I think our alignment, I mean, Montgomery and Lake Creek
- 41:10Speaker 25: are both also have a really good chance. They're both ranked.
- 41:15Speaker 25: And Division II likes 5A. They're both ranked really high.
- 41:19Speaker 25: We're all just kind of hoping all four of us
- 41:21Speaker 25: can make it to the regional finals and, you know,
- 41:23Speaker 25: match up with each other again. It would just be
- 41:25Speaker 25: so much fun, and it would just go to show
- 41:26Speaker 25: how great the teams are that we're competing against on
- 41:30Speaker 25: a day-to-day basis.
- 41:31Speaker 9: So your first game of the playoffs is against Porter.
- 41:35Speaker 9: What are going to be some keys to success for
- 41:37Speaker 9: your Lady Tigers in that one?
- 41:39Speaker 25: I mean, I think the same thing for most games
- 41:41Speaker 25: we walk into is we control our side of the
- 41:44Speaker 25: floor and what our game plan is. We're not super big.
- 41:48Speaker 25: We have a couple of people that swing really hard, like,
- 41:51Speaker 25: all the time. We're very well-rounded on front row. We
- 41:54Speaker 25: have a lot of tools. And so our goal is
- 41:57Speaker 25: to always try to use all of them as much
- 41:59Speaker 25: as possible, spread our offense out. And that makes it
- 42:03Speaker 25: easier for us to get easy shots off of that.
- 42:07Speaker 25: We always try to serve aggressive. If we can get
- 42:09Speaker 25: people either get easy points off of serve or at
- 42:13Speaker 25: least get an easy ball coming back at us off
- 42:15Speaker 25: of their serve-receive, that's always a game plan for us.
- 42:18Speaker 25: We just try to focus on making sure we do
- 42:20Speaker 25: those things on our side of the floor and just
- 42:23Speaker 25: relentless defense. We've really focused on that the last six
- 42:26Speaker 25: weeks or so, just not letting balls drop and just
- 42:29Speaker 25: keeping the ball in play and wearing other teams down.
- 42:33Speaker 25: We've done a great job of that. Those are kind
- 42:34Speaker 25: of the three things we're going to focus on just
- 42:36Speaker 25: throughout playoffs. It's for sure the first round.
- 42:39Speaker 8: All right, Coach.
- 42:39Speaker 22: Well, I appreciate your time today. Good luck on this
- 42:41Speaker 22: playoff run.
- 42:43Speaker 25: All right.
- 42:43Speaker 3: Thank you.
- 42:43Speaker 17: I appreciate it.

- 45:21Speaker 18: The Houston Texans are on their bye week after starting
- 45:23Speaker 18: the season with a 2-5 record. The team has been
- 45:26Speaker 18: riddled by injuries this year, including safety Jalen Petrie. Head
- 45:29Speaker 18: coach Tameka Ryan spoke earlier this week on how much
- 45:32Speaker 18: he has missed.
- 45:33Speaker 8: Jalen gives us.
- 45:34Speaker 17: So much flexibility in what we're capable of doing on defense.
- 45:38Speaker 17: We were able to stay nickel defense to whatever a
- 45:42Speaker 17: team may throw at us, and we had our entire
- 45:44Speaker 17: playbook at our disposal. Now just having to change personnels
- 45:47Speaker 17: a little bit more to put us in favorable positions.
- 45:51Speaker 8: Jalen is a man, true.
- 45:53Speaker 17: He's a man, physical, dynamic, everything you want, like as
- 45:57Speaker 17: a blitzer, a tackler.
- 46:00Speaker 8: He does it all.
- 46:01Speaker 18: While Petrie could return for week eight, the offense took
- 46:03Speaker 18: a hit as wide receiver Jalen Knoll was placed on
- 46:06Speaker 18: the IR yesterday and is expected to miss the remainder
- 46:09Speaker 18: of the season with turf toe. The Texans return to
- 46:12Speaker 18: action on November 8th against the Chargers with kickoff scheduled
- 46:14Speaker 18: for 305. With your Houston Texans report, I'm Dylan Moore.

- 47:19Speaker 3: It's Tex-Ags Live, brought to you by David Gardner's Jewelers.
- 47:22Speaker 19: But yeah, just a chance to take a breather and
- 47:26Speaker 19: enjoy kind of the other things. You know, Aggie volleyball,
- 47:29Speaker 19: just enjoying a weekend of not having to stress.
- 47:33Speaker 8: Look, I love college football.
- 47:34Speaker 19: It'll always be A & M first, but If you
- 47:36Speaker 19: need me on Saturday, I'll see you on Sunday.
- 47:39Speaker 21: Yeah, a lot of people, when A & M' s not
- 47:41Speaker 21: doing good, they'll kind of turn off.
- 47:44Speaker 22: But I still love college football.
- 47:45Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 47:45Speaker 4: I'll watch.
- 47:46Speaker 19: Saturday, it'll be all day for me. Absolutely. And it's
- 47:48Speaker 19: stress-free watching.
- 47:49Speaker 21: Yeah.
- 47:50Speaker 7: Every week, we have a new scandal. We have a
- 47:52Speaker 7: new eligibility concern. We have a guy, SEC, first-team all-defensive player,
- 47:57Speaker 7: who is kicked off at Auburn and has immediately said
- 47:59Speaker 7: he's going to the transfer portal. There's agents already back
- 48:02Speaker 7: channeling for next football season. The entirety of this sport
- 48:07Speaker 7: is infected, and it's gross. But on Saturdays, I'm in
- 48:10Speaker 7: my chair watching it.
- 48:11Speaker 19: Absolutely.
- 48:12Speaker 8: And I know that.
- 48:12Speaker 3: Tex-Ax Live, brought to you by David Gardner's Jewelers. Hang
- 48:15Speaker 3: out weekdays from 8 to 11 on The Zone.
- 48:33Speaker 15: Thank you.
- 49:04Speaker 9: When did this come out?
- 49:05Speaker 2: 19... Okay, album.
- 49:06Speaker 24: Comes out in 1989.
- 49:07Speaker 5: Okay.
- 49:07Speaker 8: But Black Cat is released for the charts in 1990.
- 49:10Speaker 6: Okay.
- 49:20Speaker 8: And you've played them before, and I loved when you do.
- 49:25Speaker 17: Mm-hmm.
- 49:28Speaker 8: Cult of Personality.
- 49:29Speaker 19: Yes.
- 49:31Speaker 8: By Living Color. Mm-hmm. Do they affect Janet coming out
- 49:35Speaker 8: with this, you think, or was that.
- 49:37Speaker 6: No, I mean.
- 49:39Speaker 3: Well, honestly, I think you have to talk to.
- 49:43Speaker 8: Jimmy Jam and Terry?
- 49:44Speaker 3: Yeah, Jimmy Jam and Terry, because, again, so much of
- 49:48Speaker 3: that album is them just basically pulling all their talent
- 49:56Speaker 3: and pulling the best from Janet and putting things together. Because, yes,
- 50:01Speaker 3: the album... tells a story, but obviously there's a couple,
- 50:06Speaker 3: there's a couple tracks, Black Cat, Love Will Never Do
- 50:09Speaker 3: Without You, uh, that kind of sit outside of that
- 50:13Speaker 3: narrative that she's trying to tell through, through the album. Um,
- 50:19Speaker 3: but I'm, I'm, I'm guessing, you know, they're, they're up
- 50:22Speaker 3: in Minnesota, Living Color is, is Chicago-based band. And so
- 50:27Speaker 3: there may, there may be some, some effect to that.
- 50:29Speaker 8: Some effect to that.
- 50:30Speaker 3: But I mean, I, I think it also just stems
- 50:32Speaker 3: from the fact, you know, They were cast off from
- 50:37Speaker 3: Prince and his empire.
- 50:40Speaker 8: And Prince was heavily guitar related.
- 50:41Speaker 3: And when I say cast off, not that he had
- 50:44Speaker 3: anything wrong with it. It was just when Prince goes
- 50:46Speaker 3: in a different direction, they were kind of left on
- 50:48Speaker 3: an island. And then from that, they become the producers
- 50:50Speaker 3: that they become.
- 50:51Speaker 8: And did everything. Chip Howard Sports Talk. Sports Radio 1150 AM,
- 50:55Speaker 8: The Zone, 93.7 FM. Jason and Jared in today. I'm
- 50:58Speaker 8: going to continue the conversation that y'all just had while
- 51:01Speaker 8: we were off the air when it comes to the
- 51:03Speaker 8: World Series. And I realized, I mean, now it's just
- 51:07Speaker 8: facing the music of how casual of a baseball fan
- 51:11Speaker 8: I have become in the fact that I did not
- 51:14Speaker 8: watch a single game of the World Series. Not one.
- 51:19Speaker 19: Why?
- 51:21Speaker 8: And this, again... I don't know and or care anything
- 51:25Speaker 8: about Milwaukee and Tampa Bay.
- 51:27Speaker 25: Period.
- 51:28Speaker 3: And I would dare say.
- 51:30Speaker 8: Had it been any of the larger market teams, obviously
- 51:32Speaker 8: if it would have been my Braves, I'm going to
- 51:33Speaker 8: watch that. But, like, I don't care about Milwaukee or
- 51:36Speaker 8: Tampa Bay. And I'm like, man, I am the. When
- 51:39Speaker 8: y'all were talking about, like, did you watch? I'm like,
- 51:41Speaker 8: not a game. Not a single game.
- 51:43Speaker 3: Truthfully, I only watched two and a half. I watched
- 51:48Speaker 3: the last two because I knew we were hosting today.
- 51:50Speaker 3: So I at least wanted to. To be up to
- 51:52Speaker 3: speed on it. And I've kept up with baseball largely
- 51:54Speaker 3: through podcasts this year. Yeah, I mean, I pay attention
- 51:57Speaker 3: to scores and the storylines and things like that.
- 51:59Speaker 8: But, I mean, I will.
- 52:00Speaker 3: Also say this. And we all know it's the fall classic.
- 52:05Speaker 3: We all know it's going to come towards the end
- 52:07Speaker 3: of October. But, man, those games were going up against
- 52:11Speaker 3: some heavy competition in the football world. Both college and NFL. And,
- 52:16Speaker 3: you know, if you're making a choice... And.
- 52:18Speaker 8: Here's the other thing, going back to, again, the business
- 52:21Speaker 8: of sport, the business of broadcasting, and keeping your casual fan.
- 52:26Speaker 8: The other reason why I didn't watch, because this wasn't
- 52:27Speaker 8: on a major channel every single, throughout the playoffs. Sometimes
- 52:31Speaker 8: when they're on FS1, I don't know how to, I mean,
- 52:34Speaker 8: I know how to find it, but I'm not going
- 52:36Speaker 8: looking for it. And that is an issue. And when
- 52:40Speaker 8: the world, again.
- 52:41Speaker 3: I have to admit, in the world of streaming platforms,
- 52:45Speaker 3: so a la YouTube, YouTube TV, Hulu Live, things like that.
- 52:50Speaker 3: I'm really missing channel numbers. Same, same, same.
- 52:53Speaker 8: I hate scrolling alphabetically to the F's or to the T's.
- 53:00Speaker 8: I was just thinking that the other day.
- 53:03Speaker 3: And that's what I love about when I go to
- 53:05Speaker 3: restaurants that still have direct TV. I know to tell
- 53:08Speaker 3: them ESPN's 206. TBS, it's 239. I'm tired of looking
- 53:15Speaker 3: for icons.
- 53:16Speaker 19: Yes.
- 53:17Speaker 12: So I have Sunday Ticket because I'm a student. And
- 53:20Speaker 12: every single Sunday, obviously, what am I going to do?
- 53:22Speaker 12: Watch Sunday Ticket and also the local games. I'm so
- 53:26Speaker 12: sick and tired of having just to scroll down and
- 53:29Speaker 12: seeing a thousand different channels just to find NBC, ABC,
- 53:33Speaker 12: whatever not.
- 53:35Speaker 8: It is the worst. So, yeah, as a casual fan
- 53:39Speaker 8: of baseball, those are the two dominating factors as to
- 53:42Speaker 8: why I didn't watch not a single game. One, like
- 53:46Speaker 8: I said, it's Milwaukee and Tampa Bay. I could care less. But, too, yeah,
- 53:50Speaker 8: it is. It is very difficult. Even the playoff games.
- 53:53Speaker 8: It was difficult to find the playoff games and what
- 53:56Speaker 8: was going on.
- 53:58Speaker 3: I guess the only compelling thing for the casual sports fan,
- 54:02Speaker 3: if you're not a diehard baseball fan, because they'll watch.
- 54:04Speaker 3: I mean, most diehard baseball fans have the MLB app
- 54:07Speaker 3: because that thing is a thing of beauty. You can
- 54:11Speaker 3: select favorite players. You can see instant highlights, get instant stats.
- 54:15Speaker 3: I mean, it is what you imagine playing. all technology
- 54:21Speaker 3: at your fingertips being. The only reason for the casual
- 54:27Speaker 3: sports fan to watch this is to see Jacob Mizorowski.
- 54:33Speaker 3: Because brother throws heat. Like he's throwing 100 miles an
- 54:38Speaker 3: hour like it's nothing. And he could... I mean, if
- 54:44Speaker 3: he was in a large market, which... Inevitably, you know
- 54:47Speaker 3: he probably will be, although it's going to be interesting
- 54:52Speaker 3: to see the dynamics of the Dodgers as this whole
- 54:55Speaker 3: thing shakes out. But he is the next great pitcher.
- 55:03Speaker 3: For all the pitchers that we've seen over the year
- 55:07Speaker 3: that we thought was going to be the next big thing,
- 55:10Speaker 3: the Kerry Woods, the Strasburgs, all these guys, He inevitably
- 55:18Speaker 3: looks like he's going to be the next big thing,
- 55:20Speaker 3: but playing for Milwaukee, which is an Olic Aquin term
- 55:24Speaker 3: for the good language, which, by the way, if you're
- 55:27Speaker 3: in my generation, you cannot hear the word Milwaukee without
- 55:29Speaker 3: thinking of that. For everyone else, that joke is completely
- 55:31Speaker 3: lost on you.
- 55:32Speaker 4: But.
- 55:33Speaker 3: To see him pitch as dominantly as he did, that's
- 55:35Speaker 3: part of the reason why in our conversations, I'm not
- 55:37Speaker 3: surprised this ended in a gentleman's sweep because the Brewers
- 55:41Speaker 3: pitching this year has just been so dominant.
- 55:43Speaker 8: After the top of the aisle, we're going to come back.
- 55:45Speaker 8: We'll get into some college football. We'll definitely get into NFL.
