- 0:00Lord God, we thank you for tonight and we are grateful for
- 0:02all that you do. And you've blessed us with so
- 0:05many blessings, Lord, And your word is the greatest of all
- 0:10blessings because it expresses to us the the beauty of your
- 0:15name. It shows us exactly what it is
- 0:18you want us to do with your children.
- 0:20And we thank you, Lord, for the encouragement and comfort that
- 0:22it brings. We are blessed people, and we
- 0:26want to thank You for that. Tonight as we open Your word, we
- 0:29pray that you would instruct us in the way that we should go.
- 0:32We pray, Lord, that you'd open our eyes to behold the beauty of
- 0:36the Lord. We pray, Lord, that you would
- 0:38encourage the faint hearted, that you would comfort those
- 0:42Lord, who are downtrodden, and that, Lord, your word would
- 0:46speak to their hearts. That Your Spirit would use Your
- 0:50word to strengthen us every single day until you come again,
- 0:56as you most surely will in Jesus name, Amen.
- 1:01Take your Bible if you would and turn to Matthew chapter 5.
- 1:08Matthew chapter 5. There are many nursery rhymes
- 1:15that I'm sure yet you know very very well.
- 1:18My my favorite is Humpty Dumpty. It goes like this.
- 1:25Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall. Humpty Dumpty had a great fall
- 1:34and all the King's horses and and all the King's men could not
- 1:41put Humpty Dumpty back together again.
- 1:46Humpty Dumpty was, was quite a man.
- 1:51I'm not sure you've ever met him or not, but he was a man in
- 1:55control of his life. He, he was a man who knew what
- 1:59he wanted to do in life. So one day Humpty Dumpty decided
- 2:04to take a stroll, and I'm taking that stroll.
- 2:09He decided to do something he had never done before, and that
- 2:11was climb a wall. So he did.
- 2:16He climbed up in the wall and he wanted to get a view of the
- 2:18world that he'd never seen before, thinking that it would
- 2:21give him a good worldview, a good perspective on life.
- 2:28But something all of a sudden, horribly happens.
- 2:33He falls off of the wall. He wasn't pushed off the wall,
- 2:40he just simply fell off the wall.
- 2:45And lo and behold, his whole life was shattered.
- 2:51His whole life was broken. His life was in shambles.
- 2:58He was in desperate need of help.
- 3:04And help would come, but help did not come from his friends,
- 3:10help did not come from his family.
- 3:14Help did not even come from his work associates.
- 3:19Help came from our nation's capital.
- 3:25It came from Washington, DC. In fact, Humpty Dumpty was such
- 3:30a unique man that Congress decided to have an emergency
- 3:34session to decide how quickly they could dispatch to meet the
- 3:40needs of Humpty Dumpty. And so they dispatched all the
- 3:47King's horses and all the King's men.
- 3:52And upon arrival to where Humpty Dumpty had fallen, they quickly
- 3:58came to realize that they could not put Humpty Dumpty back
- 4:02together again. And Humpty Dumpty trusted in the
- 4:11best of the land, the King's horses and the King's men.
- 4:18But they were unable to do what Humpty Dumpty needed done.
- 4:25They could not put him back together again.
- 4:32And so as you read the nursery rhyme, you must remember that
- 4:38the nursery rhyme is not about Humpty Dumpty.
- 4:43It's all about the King's horses, and it's all about the
- 4:47King's men. And it shows us how ineffective
- 4:55that the best of the land can be when it comes to tackling man's
- 5:02shattered lives. Our world has all kinds of
- 5:07problems. There's crime, there's sex
- 5:12trafficking, there's drugs, there's alcoholism, there's
- 5:18child abuse, there's spousal abuse, there is murder.
- 5:25But none of those are really the problem.
- 5:29They're just symptoms to a deeper problem, and that is sin
- 5:37in the life of every person. For sin is embedded in the heart
- 5:45of a man, and man is completely shattered, completely broken.
- 5:53And no matter how hard you try, you will never be able to find
- 6:00help in this world. No matter how expensive the help
- 6:06is, no matter how important the help may be, they are unable,
- 6:11they are ineffective to put man's broken, shattered life
- 6:17back together again. But there is someone who can.
- 6:26And believe it or not, that someone who can is sitting in
- 6:33this room tonight. For you are the solution to
- 6:44man's shattered soul. For the Lord said you are salt
- 6:54and you are light in a world that's decaying and
- 7:01deteriorating. You as a child of the living God
- 7:08are its salt. In a world that's dark and
- 7:13depressed, you are its light. And believe it or not, what
- 7:21Washington cannot do, you can do because God has equipped you to
- 7:28do that. He gives us the identity of a
- 7:34child of the king in verses 1 to 12.
- 7:39He very strategically interprets the identity of children of the
- 7:43king, and then he specifically articulates the authority of
- 7:48those who are children of the king in Matthew 5, verses 13 to
- 7:5416. This is what it says.
- 7:58You are the salt of the earth, but if the salt has become
- 8:03tasteless, how can it be made salty again?
- 8:07It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out
- 8:11and trampled in the foot by men. You are the light of the world.
- 8:17A city set on the hill cannot be hidden.
- 8:20Nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on
- 8:25the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the
- 8:28house. Let your light shine before men
- 8:31in such a way that they may see your good works and glorify your
- 8:36Father who is in heaven. Interesting that the Lord says
- 8:43that the people that are reviled the most, the people that are
- 8:46persecuted the most, the people that are slandered the most, are
- 8:51the only solution to a shattered, decaying, Dark World.
- 9:01The peacemakers are the ones who truly can bring peace to
- 9:07shattered lives. So Christ makes it very clear
- 9:11that when he identifies His children, He specifies their
- 9:20authority. They are salt and they are light
- 9:26in a world that's decaying and dark.
- 9:31You are the solution to the world's problem because Christ
- 9:37ordained you to be such. And so we have three points this
- 9:42evening. One is simply understanding what
- 9:47it means to be salt and light, and that's we're going to
- 9:49address the the condition of society.
- 9:51Then we're going to articulate the solution from the Scriptures
- 9:56and then we'll apply some directions for the Saints.
- 10:01If you have an outline, you can follow along with us.
- 10:04But addressing the condition of society is is not very hard at
- 10:08all because society is is decaying.
- 10:13Society is not getting any better.
- 10:17It's never going to get better. I love to talk to my post
- 10:21millennial friends because they think that things are going to
- 10:24get better. Just get enough Christians in
- 10:25government and just get enough Christian doctors and enough
- 10:29Christian lawyers and enough Christian mayors and enough
- 10:32Christian teachers and you can usher in the Kingdom.
- 10:36Things will be better. I'm not sure what Bible they're
- 10:40reading, but they're reading not the same Bible I'm reading
- 10:44because things are not getting any better.
- 10:46They're getting worse. They're continually decaying.
- 10:52Even the second law of thermodynamics in science points
- 10:55that out extremely well. But man is not getting better.
- 11:01He's getting worse. And over 250 years ago, almost
- 11:07300 years ago, it was Isaac Watts who who wrote a a hymn
- 11:12entitled Am IA, Soldier of the Cross.
- 11:16And in that hymn he asks several questions that need to be
- 11:20answered. Listen to what it says.
- 11:24Am IA Soldier of the Cross, the follower of the Lamb.
- 11:26Good question. Are you and shall I fear to own
- 11:31his cause or blush to speak his name?
- 11:35That's a good question. Must I be carried to the skies
- 11:40on flowery beds of ease while others fight to win the prize
- 11:45and sail through bloody seas? Again, Another great question.
- 11:52And they says this. Are there no foes for me to
- 11:58face? Must I not stem the flood?
- 12:03Is this vile world a friend to grace to help me on to God?
- 12:13Great question, is this vile world a friend of grace to help
- 12:22me on to God? The answer is no.
- 12:27If you set under university professors, will they help you
- 12:32unto God? If you read the books of
- 12:36society, will they help you unto God?
- 12:42If you were to receive counsel from a psychiatrist, will they
- 12:48help you unto God? Answer no.
- 12:54If I if I live the way of the world, will it help me in any
- 12:58way get closer to God? Answer no Why?
- 13:02Because we live in a vile world. We live in a decaying society
- 13:09that's only getting worse and worse with each progressing day.
- 13:15It's not getting any better. Paul would say that evil men and
- 13:19imposters, Second Timothy Chapter 3, are only going to get
- 13:22worse and worse, not better and better.
- 13:27Why is that? Well, first, John 519 tells you.
- 13:33It says the whole world lies in the power of the evil one.
- 13:42It's no wonder all the King's horses and all the King's men
- 13:47could not put Humpty Dumpty back together again.
- 13:51Why? Because they're under the power
- 13:53of the Evil 1. They're directed by Satan
- 13:57himself. They have no answer to man's
- 14:01dilemma. Oh, they can change laws and
- 14:05they can rewrite all kinds of prescriptions, but that's not
- 14:11going to change man's inner soul.
- 14:15They can't do that. The Bible says in John 1611 that
- 14:22Satan is the Prince of the world.
- 14:27The Ephesians 22, he's the Prince of the power of the air.
- 14:34Second Corinthians 44 says he's the God of this age.
- 14:39I mean, everything about the world is under Satan's domain.
- 14:43The Lord has allowed that to happen.
- 14:46He's allowed Satan to run his course.
- 14:50So everything in society is ruled by Satan.
- 14:56It's no wonder that nothing of the world can help you move to
- 15:03God because it's not a friend of grace at all.
- 15:10It only takes you further and further away from the Lord.
- 15:16Over in Philippians chapter 2, Paul says this in verse 14.
- 15:21Do all things without grumbling and disputing so that you may
- 15:25prove yourselves to be blameless and innocent children of God
- 15:29above reproach in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation.
- 15:36So so Paul is addressing the Church of Philippi some 2000
- 15:41years ago and says that you need to appear as lights in the world
- 15:48because you live in a crooked and perverse generation.
- 15:54He goes on to say this, Among whom you appear as lights in the
- 15:57world, holding fast the word of life, said in the day of Christ.
- 16:01I will have reason to glory, because I did not run in vain,
- 16:05nor toil in vain. So we live amidst A perverse and
- 16:11crooked generation. Paul would say it this way in
- 16:15Romans 3 verse #10 There is none righteous, not even one.
- 16:19There is none who understands. There is none who seeks for God.
- 16:24All have turned aside. Together they have become
- 16:27useless. There is none who does good.
- 16:29There is not even one. Their throats are an open grave.
- 16:32With their tongue they keep deceiving.
- 16:35The poison of ASPs is under their lips, whose mouth is full
- 16:39of cursing and bitterness. Their feet are swift to shed
- 16:44blood. Destruction and misery are in
- 16:47their paths, and the path of peace they have not known, and
- 16:52there is No Fear of God before their eyes.
- 16:58You see, the reason all the King's horses and all the King's
- 17:02men could not put Humpty Dumpty back together again is because
- 17:07all the King's horses and all the King's men were as broken
- 17:11and shattered as Humpty Dumpty was.
- 17:14They just did not recognize how broken they were.
- 17:21But they were. That's why they could offer no
- 17:24help. There was no solution.
- 17:28Why? Romans 3 tells you, Philippians
- 17:312 tells you, Second Timothy 3 tells you.
- 17:34That's the world in which we live in.
- 17:36It's the world under the reign of Satan, and he wants to
- 17:42destroy everything that God has done and is doing.
- 17:48So the world is is decaying. In fact, all you got to do is
- 17:54read the book of Genesis right in the beginning.
- 17:57God created the heavens and the earth.
- 17:59And when you get to the end of Genesis chapter 1 and Genesis
- 18:03chapter 2, everything's good. The fact is very good.
- 18:07Oh, Genesis 3, the fall of man occurs, right?
- 18:10And in Genesis 6, the Bible says this.
- 18:16The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great on the earth,
- 18:20and that every intent of the fonts of his heart was only evil
- 18:27continually. From Genesis 3 to Genesis 6, God
- 18:33says that every intent of every thought in every heart was only
- 18:42evil continually. So what did He do?
- 18:46He destroyed the whole planet. Everybody on it except for eight
- 18:50souls started over again. You come to Genesis chapter 18,
- 18:57Abraham pleads with the Lord. If there be 50 righteous in the
- 19:01city, will you spare the city? God says, yeah, I'll spare it
- 19:04for 50. How about 45?
- 19:06Yep, 45. How about 4040 righteous souls
- 19:11in Sodom and Gomorrah? Spare the city, God says I'll
- 19:14spare it. How about 30?
- 19:17Yep. 20. Yeah.
- 19:20Whoa. How about 10?
- 19:21Yep, that's where Abram stopped and God destroyed all of Sodom
- 19:31and Gomorrah because there was only righteous Lot in the city.
- 19:39And isn't it interesting in Luke 17 it tells us to remember Lot's
- 19:46wife because she was turned into what?
- 19:51A pillar of salts as a reminder to every husband in the room
- 20:03that you need to be salt in light, primarily in your family
- 20:11and then in your city. But if you're not salt and light
- 20:15in your family, how do you expect to win the city?
- 20:21We, we love to, to, to send people on missions trips and we
- 20:24love to tell people how, how we shared the gospel with people at
- 20:27work. But are you salt in light in
- 20:31your very own home? Because if you are not, you have
- 20:37failed miserably and Lot failed miserably.
- 20:43We we would never know that Lot was a righteous man if it wasn't
- 20:46for Peter telling us he was righteous law.
- 20:51Because when you read the book of Genesis, you don't get
- 20:53anything about that from Lot's perspective that he was a
- 20:57righteous man and yet God did something very specific tells
- 21:06the wife, do not look back. She does.
- 21:13But that's a, that's more of a leadership issue on Lot's part
- 21:20than anything else. Because you remember, she was in
- 21:23the back. She was behind everyone else,
- 21:27right? Why?
- 21:29Because no one there could scold her.
- 21:32No one there could stop her. She was in the back.
- 21:37Leadership says you go up front, I'll bring up the rear and I
- 21:45will take you out of here. Well, I didn't do that, failed
- 21:50miserably as a as a husband. And so many men today fail
- 21:57miserably at home because they're not salt and light at
- 22:01home. And yet that's the primary
- 22:05emphasis of your ministry. I mean, you can you can read
- 22:10about missionaries and people have travelled the country and
- 22:14and shared the gossip with people and one many souls to the
- 22:18Lord. But their hand their their
- 22:20families are going to hell in a handbasket because they missed
- 22:25the ministry, the main ministry of home that should not be.
- 22:31You live in a world that's decaying and everything begins.
- 22:37Discipleship begins at home. Does it begin in church doesn't
- 22:42begin with your neighbor. It begins at home with your
- 22:46family, with your wife as a father, husband to children.
- 22:52That's where it begins. So the world is, is decaying.
- 22:58The world's dark dark. That's the condition of society.
- 23:04Spiritual darkness dominates the entire world system.
- 23:10But you know what? The world lives it that way.
- 23:11First, John, I'm sorry, John 3 verse #19 and this is the
- 23:15judgment that light has come into the world and men love the
- 23:19darkness rather than the light for their deeds are evil.
- 23:23Romans one verse #21 when they knew God, they glorified him not
- 23:26as God. Neither we're thankful, but
- 23:28because or, but excuse me, but became vain in their
- 23:31imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.
- 23:38Christ would later say in Matthew chapter 6, which we will
- 23:41cover down the road. These words, If therefore the
- 23:46light that is in you be darkness, how great is that
- 23:50darkness? And then in John 9, Christ says,
- 23:55As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.
- 24:00And he warned them in John 12 verse #35 Yet a little while is
- 24:05the light with you. Walk while you have the light,
- 24:09lest darkness come upon you. For he that walketh in darkness
- 24:13knows not where he he goes. The world is dark because the
- 24:21Prince of Darkness rules the world.
- 24:25The world is decaying because Satan is the destroyer.
- 24:31He wants everything to be destroyed.
- 24:35But God has a solution. God has a very simple, simple
- 24:40solution, and that is His children.
- 24:46His children are the answer to man's shattered soul.
- 24:55You, he says, are the salt of the earth.
- 24:58You are the light of the world. The word you is emphatic.
- 25:06You and you only. Nobody else.
- 25:10Just you. Not you and this organization or
- 25:15you and that organization. It's just you, children of the
- 25:19king. You are the salt of the world,
- 25:22and the you is plural. So you, collectively as my
- 25:29children, are the solution. What?
- 25:331 grain of salt does not help your burger much or your French
- 25:39fries much. You got to douse it with salt,
- 25:43right? My my father loves salt.
- 25:47He used the salt pretzels. He would salt salt and vinegar
- 25:53potato chips. He put salt on Chinese food.
- 25:59He put salt on everything because he just loved salt.
- 26:07But never did he put one little grain of salt on anything.
- 26:11He would douse it with salt. Well, so here is the Lord saying
- 26:16you, plural, are the salt of the earth. 1 grain does not do much,
- 26:23but collectively you will make a significant impact.
- 26:30Because you see, everything is about influence.
- 26:33Everything is about impact. It was William Shakespeare who
- 26:37said these words. All the world's stage and all
- 26:42the men and women are merely players and each man at his time
- 26:48makes his entrance and has many parts.
- 26:54It was Eli who Burritt who said these words.
- 26:57He said no human being can come into this world without
- 27:00increasing or diminishing the sum total of human happiness,
- 27:04not only of the present age, but of every subsequent age of
- 27:08humanity. It was the writer of Acts, Luke,
- 27:13who says in Acts 1336 that David, after he served God in
- 27:19his generation, fell asleep among his father's.
- 27:25David after he served God in his generation.
- 27:29He can only impact his generation, just like you and I
- 27:34can only impact this generation. And God has called us
- 27:38collectively to be salt and to be light in the world that's
- 27:43decaying, in the world that is is dark.
- 27:48Salt retards corruption and light is that which reveals
- 27:52truth. Salt acts silently where light
- 27:58acts verbally. Salt is how we live that retards
- 28:04corruption and light is how we speak.
- 28:08When we manifest light, the influence or to influence
- 28:15something in another direction means you must be the complete
- 28:21opposite going the other direction.
- 28:26That's why the Lord says, what fellowship have light with
- 28:29darkness, What fellowship have the Lord with Belial come out
- 28:35from among them and be separate, be unique, be distinct.
- 28:40As Christians, we we are completely different than the
- 28:44world, but yet we're in the world.
- 28:46And Christ would pray, Lord, take them not out of the world,
- 28:51but protect them while they're in the world, because we are the
- 28:56salt and light. So while you're in the world,
- 28:59you're not to be of the world, because by being in the world,
- 29:04you act as salt to retard the corruption.
- 29:09You act as light to reveal the gospel, to reveal the truth and
- 29:14the Lord establish it. That you and I would be the
- 29:18solution to all the Humpty Dumpties that have fallen in the
- 29:23world, which is everybody and nobody can help them except us
- 29:32children of the King, people who know the Lord.
- 29:37We are the solution. We are the ones that help people
- 29:42come to grips with the reality of the sovereign God who rules
- 29:47the earth. So as you articulate the
- 29:50solution from scripture #1 it's a fact that you are light.
- 29:54You are salt #2 the function of of salt and the function of
- 29:59light. We, we are to shake the salt and
- 30:03we are to shine the light. Salt does no good by staying on
- 30:09the counter or in the cupboard. Ever notice that you might, You
- 30:14might want a salty burger, but as long as Morton salt sits in
- 30:19your cupboard, it's nothing's going to happen.
- 30:21You got to take it out and shake it on the object you want to
- 30:26flavor. Is that not true?
- 30:29Sure it is. So as salt, you can't afford to
- 30:33sit on the shelf. You got to be actively involved.
- 30:38And so you must understand that that salt was a very valuable
- 30:42commodity in the days of Jesus. Why?
- 30:47There was no refrigeration, right?
- 30:50So salt was that which preserved that which is important, meats
- 30:56for say. But notice this, the Romans said
- 31:02that outside of the sun, salt is the most valuable thing on the
- 31:09planet. Why salt was so valuable that
- 31:15they used to pay their soldiers with salt.
- 31:19My mom used to always say, son, make sure you're worth your
- 31:22salt. I'm like, what does that mean,
- 31:23worth my salt? But she knew what that meant.
- 31:28That means that soldiers were paid in salt because it was so
- 31:31valuable that they could use that over and over again.
- 31:36So salt was a very valuable commodity.
- 31:39So valuable that when 2 enemies sat down and shared salt
- 31:45together, they had to be kind to one another and show friendship
- 31:51in spite of the fact that they were enemies.
- 31:54That's how valuable salt was in ancient days.
- 31:59Salt also represents purity. The color, it's white and
- 32:04although it's talking about being tasteful or taste less,
- 32:08not specifically speaking about the color, there is something
- 32:11about salt and it's color that emphasizes purity and holiness.
- 32:17So it also creates A thirst. The more salt you take in, the
- 32:22the thirstier you are. And there's something about you
- 32:27and me being the salt of the earth that creates a a thirst in
- 32:31those all around us. And even though we are the ones
- 32:33that are reviled and slandered and persecuted the most based on
- 32:37verses 10/11/12 there there's something about the life that
- 32:41causes and creates thirst and those around you.
- 32:44Because there's something about your life that is so appetizing
- 32:50that people want to be a part of.
- 32:54Salt is also that which causes great pain.
- 33:00For if you put salt in a wound, it stings.
- 33:04It stings loud, right? But that's what Christians do.
- 33:11They have a stinging influence, a stinging impact in society,
- 33:16because society is nothing but an open wound anyway.
- 33:19And when you shake salt in that open wound, there is all kinds
- 33:24of pain and turmoil in those who receive that which you have
- 33:28shaken. But most importantly, salt is
- 33:33that what curbs corruption. Salt did that.
- 33:39It preserved those things which are valuable and we as
- 33:45Christians represent God's presence on earth and light.
- 33:53Salt is to be shaken, but light is to be shown.
- 33:58We're to shine forth the light. The Bible says the Philippians
- 34:03215 that we are to appear as lights in the world.
- 34:06The Bible says in in second Peter 14 we are partakers of the
- 34:09divine nature. Now think about that.
- 34:12We are we are partakers of Christ divine nature, and God
- 34:16himself is light. Remember, in the beginning God
- 34:20created the heavens and the earth.
- 34:22The very first thing God created was light.
- 34:26That's not the sun, the moon and the stars.
- 34:28They were created on David number 4.
- 34:31But God creates light first. Why?
- 34:33Because God is light and the world needs to see God first and
- 34:40so he creates light first. Because everything about
- 34:43creation screams God. Everything about it, the order
- 34:47of creation, the way He created, screams nothing but God.
- 34:54So at the very outset, you need to know that God created the
- 34:56heavens and the earth, and the very first thing He created was
- 34:58light. He also, by the way, created
- 35:00darkness. You know, that's why they have
- 35:0245 verse #7 you say what? What was there before?
- 35:07Before the earth was created? Nothing.
- 35:09Well, what does nothing look like?
- 35:10I don't know, nothing. There's just nothing there.
- 35:15But dark is a creation by God. Isaiah 45 verse #7 I the Lord
- 35:19and the one who creates darkness, but he is the one who
- 35:25creates light, because he is the light of the world.
- 35:28The Bible says in Ephesians 5 verse #8 For you were once in
- 35:33darkness, but now are you light in the Lord?
- 35:36Walk as children of light. We walk as children of the
- 35:42light. We're to walk like Christ, we're
- 35:47to walk very brightly, not dimly but very brightly, so people can
- 35:54see the way to the living God. But notice failure, the failure
- 36:04of the tastelessness of salt and the lightlessness of light.
- 36:13He says very clearly. You are the salty earth.
- 36:18But if the salt has become tasteless, how can it be made
- 36:22salty again? It is no longer good for
- 36:25anything except to be thrown out and trampled under foot.
- 36:31He's not talking about losing your salvation.
- 36:33He's talking about losing your influence and losing your
- 36:35impact. If you become contaminated by
- 36:40the things of the world, if your purity is compromised, if your
- 36:46holiness is is corrupted, your ability to make impact is
- 36:54minimized. Think about that.
- 36:59Think about how it is you to train your children to live pure
- 37:04and holy lives. If you live in impurity, how do
- 37:09you train your children to live impurity?
- 37:14It's hard, isn't it? Think of the life of King David,
- 37:18right? How?
- 37:20How could he train his children to follow the Lord and not
- 37:24commit adultery and not commit immorality because he was
- 37:27immoral himself or Solomon his son, or Rayobum his son?
- 37:36You see, it's very easily passed down corruption because our
- 37:43light has been dimmed, our salt has become tasteless, has become
- 37:50contaminated. Now it's it's hard for sodium
- 37:54chloride to to be contaminated, but it can be mixed with foreign
- 37:58substances, substances to make it tasteless or not as tasteful.
- 38:05And whenever you begin to mix a foreign substance, something of
- 38:09the world, into your Christianity, your saltiness is
- 38:13compromised and you're not nearly as stingy as you should
- 38:19be in the wound. You're not nearly as as white
- 38:24and pure as you should be. And you can't preserve
- 38:28corruption if you yourself engage in corrupt behavior.
- 38:34So the Lord gives a warning about the failure of of not
- 38:40becoming the salt or being the salt you need to be.
- 38:44You see, we don't, we don't become salt, we are salt.
- 38:48We don't become light. We are light.
- 38:50But our salt can lose its flavor, its tastefulness.
- 38:56Our light can become dim simply because of sin, simply because
- 39:03of compromise, simply because we refuse to do what God has called
- 39:10us to do. And so very simply, we need to
- 39:19let our light shine before men. He says you're the light of the
- 39:26world. A city set on a hill cannot be
- 39:29hidden. Nor does anyone light a lamp and
- 39:32put it under a basket, but on the lampstand and it gives light
- 39:36to all who are in the house. It's a good illustration because
- 39:42your light should shine the brightest Ware at home.
- 39:48He uses the lamp stand. He uses the house as an example
- 39:52that that's not by accident. Our light should shine so
- 39:57brightly at home. Now think about it.
- 40:00When you put a lamp on the lamp stand, you don't hide it under a
- 40:03bushel, you don't hide it under a basket.
- 40:06Yes, some rays of light might seep through the holes that are
- 40:09there, but you would take off that lid so the whole room is is
- 40:13lit up with brightness so you can see.
- 40:20Christ makes it very clear that He wants those in your home to
- 40:26see the brightness of your life. And then he says this, he says
- 40:31let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see
- 40:33your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven.
- 40:38This is the fulfillment aspect. It's all about beauty and glory,
- 40:44The good works. Kalos deals with beauty,
- 40:48attractiveness. It's not Agathas which is with
- 40:51quality. It's Kalos that deals with the
- 40:53beauty and attractiveness of the light.
- 40:57Remember a city set on a hill in, in, in, in those days, if
- 41:02even today, if you were to go to Israel, it, it is so dark around
- 41:06the Sea of Galilee, but you can see cities on hills all around
- 41:11the Sea of Galilee that are all lit up.
- 41:13It's not one light on a hill. It's a myriad of lights on a
- 41:16hill that light up the city. Why?
- 41:19Because they all function together as one.
- 41:23And Christ says the world needs to see your beauty and to see
- 41:29see me. It's about glorifying me.
- 41:33You don't shine for yourself. You don't shake the salt for
- 41:38yourself. It's all about the Lord.
- 41:41It's all about glorifying your Father who is in heaven that
- 41:45they might come to know the saving grace of God.
- 41:50In Second Kings chapter 4, there's a story of Elijah and he
- 41:57went to the little village of Shinham, never said anything,
- 42:03never performed a miracle, never preached the truth.
- 42:10But there was a lady in the city who saw him and invited him to
- 42:14come to dinner at her house with her husband.
- 42:23And Elijah would go, and every time he entered the city he was
- 42:27invited to come for dinner. But the Bible records no record
- 42:36that he ever said anything to the woman and to her husband.
- 42:41And the woman says to her husband, I perceive that this
- 42:47man is a man of God. He never said a word, never
- 42:58preach A sermon, never performed a miracle.
- 43:02The only thing he did was eat. In other words, it adds whole
- 43:11new meaning to 1st Corinthians 1031, that whatever you do,
- 43:13whether you eat or whether you drink, do all to the glory of
- 43:17God. Just by the way you eat and
- 43:22drink puts God on display. Elisha did.
- 43:30Because we are to shine so brightly.
- 43:33We're to shake so fervently the salt and light the others will
- 43:39never mistake that we truly are children of the king.
- 43:46Last point, applying some directions for the Saints as
- 43:52salt you should be rubbing into society, rubbing into society.
- 43:59Think about where you work and why you work there.
- 44:02Think about where you go to school and why you go to that
- 44:05school. Think about where you live and
- 44:08what neighborhood you live in. Just to let you know that you're
- 44:13there by divine appointment. Yes, you bought your house.
- 44:18Yes, you chose the school you go to.
- 44:21Yes, you accepted the job at your place of employment.
- 44:25All that's true. But it was all under the
- 44:28direction of the sovereignty of the living God.
- 44:32God directed you. God moved you.
- 44:35God took you where you were. God did this, right?
- 44:39Why? Because he's called you to live
- 44:42out your spiritual existence in a specific sphere of influence,
- 44:46right? He has you there and no one else
- 44:50there. He puts you in that school, in
- 44:53that classroom with that professor.
- 44:56He puts you in that workplace under that boss with those
- 45:00people. Why?
- 45:04Because you are the salt of the earth.
- 45:08You are the light of the world. And God says, I want you to
- 45:14shine right there. I, I, I want you to rub into
- 45:18that place right there. That's where I want you to shake
- 45:21your salt and shine your light. That's where I want you to be a
- 45:25stinging influence. That's where I want you to be a
- 45:28purifying influence. That's why I want you to be a
- 45:30preservative. That's where I want you to
- 45:32prevent corruption. That's why I want you to speak
- 45:35forth the lights so people will know the truth of the gospel.
- 45:41That that's why, that's why the word of God is called light.
- 45:45That's why the word Incarnate is called light.
- 45:50So you have the the infinite word is light because God is
- 45:54light. Yeah, the inspired word, which
- 45:57is light, that was a light into my path and a lamp into my feet.
- 46:03And you have the Incarnate Word, which is light for Christ as I
- 46:07am the light of the world. So the infinite word, the
- 46:10inspired word, the Incarnate Word are all light.
- 46:14And so you use that word to to speak forth the truth.
- 46:17So you shed light into a place that God's called you to live
- 46:22out your spiritual existence. See, that's just a great thing
- 46:26about being you. The great thing about being you
- 46:30is that God puts you when he put nobody else.
- 46:35That that's why God gave you the kids he gave you.
- 46:38He didn't give you my kids. He gave you your kids.
- 46:42He didn't give me your kids. He gave you your kids because
- 46:46God wants you to be that light at home.
- 46:49He wants you to be that salt at home.
- 46:50He wants you to be that purifying influence all
- 46:53throughout your house, all throughout your workplace.
- 46:56This is where God has placed you.
- 46:57And so He wants you as salt to rub into society.
- 47:06So often have you noticed that the world has seemed to rub more
- 47:15into the church than the church has rubbed into the world.
- 47:22The church is becoming more and more like the world.
- 47:27We want to accept the people of the world, the things of the
- 47:30world. When the Bible is very clear
- 47:32love not the world, neither the things that are in the world.
- 47:35Why the world's passing away? The lesser of but he doesn't
- 47:39will. God abides forever.
- 47:42We gathered together as Saints that we might learn to grow.
- 47:46And I walk with the Lord so that when we dispersed from this
- 47:48place, we can act as salt and light in a World of Darkness and
- 47:54decay. So as salt we are to rub into
- 47:59society, as light we are to reflect our Savior.
- 48:07Donald Gray Barnhouse was a master of illustration, and this
- 48:13is what he says about this text. When Christ was in the world, he
- 48:19was like the shining sun, which is here in the day and gone at
- 48:24night. When the sunsets, the moon comes
- 48:27up, and the moon is a picture of the believers or the church.
- 48:36The church shines, but it does not shine with its own light.
- 48:42It shines with reflected light. When Jesus was in the world, he
- 48:48said I am the light of the world.
- 48:51But as he contemplated leaving the world, he told his
- 48:54disciples, You are the light of the world.
- 48:59At times the church has been a full moon, dazzling the world
- 49:03with an almost daytime light. These have been times of great
- 49:08enlightenment, such as those of Paul and Luther and Wesley.
- 49:14And at other times the church has been only a thumbnail moon,
- 49:19and very little light shines on the earth.
- 49:23But whether the church is a full moon or a new thumbnail moon,
- 49:28waxing or waning, it reflects the light of the sun.
- 49:36As lights of the world, we reflect the Savior.
- 49:41The question comes for you and me, how?
- 49:44How great is that reflection? How is it as little moons we
- 49:50are, we are reflecting the light of the sun?
- 49:56Interesting, the Bible says in Malachi 4 verse #2 that the
- 50:00Messiah will be called the Sun SUN of Righteousness.
- 50:04The Sun of Righteousness will rise with healing in his wings.
- 50:11The Messiah was called the Day Star because of the brightness
- 50:15of that star. And we, his children, are like
- 50:21little moons shining because we're reflecting not our light,
- 50:28but his light to all those roundabout us.
- 50:36So tonight, as we as we close, we're going to do something a
- 50:39little bit different. I want you to all stand up with
- 50:41me if you would please go ahead. Don't be bashful to stand up.
- 50:45And I want you to exit outside of your your Pew.
- 50:49And I want you to gather around with me here and all around the
- 50:53auditorium. We're going to hold hands, and
- 50:56we're doing this specifically because as collective salt and
- 51:01light, we have the opportunity to impact this world.
- 51:09And as individuals, as individuals, we can make an
- 51:15impact, right? But as a church with all of us
- 51:21together, the light shines so much brighter because all of us
- 51:26are the light of the world. All of us are the salt of the
- 51:28earth. And we can, we can like jump up
- 51:32and down and act like we're salt salt shakers and, and act like
- 51:35we're pouring salt all over the world or, or, But the bottom
- 51:39line is that we are all salt and we are all light.
- 51:43And we have the opportunity as a church to make an impact not
- 51:48just in West Covina, but wherever God calls us to live
- 51:51out of spiritual existence. So I want to close in prayer
- 51:55tonight with all of us holding hands and thanking God for what
- 52:00he's done to make us who we are, that we might be be used by him.
- 52:05Let's pray together. Father, we thank you, Lord, for
- 52:08for today. I want to thank you for everyone
- 52:10in the room. I'm going to thank you as we we
- 52:14hold hands together, symbolically representing the
- 52:18fact that all of us are salt. All of us are light.
- 52:22All of us together make a significant impact.
- 52:28All of us as as a family of Christians, as a as a Church of
- 52:32Christians, we had the opportunity to touch the lives
- 52:35of those all around us. My prayer, Father, is that as we
- 52:40as we look at this lesson and realize what you've called us to
- 52:44be, you've called us to be salt and light, that we would be that
- 52:50that you would use us with those closest to us, with those we go
- 52:56to work with tomorrow, the those we sit in class with tomorrow,
- 53:01those who rub shoulders with in our neighborhood, that they
- 53:05would know there's something different about our lives simply
- 53:11because we are salt and we are light.
- 53:16So Lord, our prayer is that you would use us for your glory as a
- 53:21church, for your purposes, that others might know who you are
- 53:28and glorify our Father who is in heaven.
- 53:32We pray all this in Jesus name, Amen.
