- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Thursday, it's the 27th of
- 0:16March. So good, so good to have your
- 0:19company friend. I hope you are going really well
- 0:21and I hope you as much as I am, are enjoying reading through the
- 0:25Gospel of John, hearing Jesus words, being exposed to that
- 0:31enormous capacity to challenge and teach and engage and
- 0:35reassure. I hope it's landing for you
- 0:38friends like it is for me. And today we are going to hear
- 0:42another one of these amazing miracles that leads to Jesus.
- 0:45First, I am statement. John is famous for having these
- 0:49pivotal I am statements. And today we're going to see the
- 0:54lengths that Jesus goes to to make a point.
- 0:56You know, he feeds these 5000 people and yes, that's a
- 0:59miraculous sign in itself, but that is simply a segue for him
- 1:04to begin the conversation about the fact that it's not the bread
- 1:08that we eat, but it's him. He is the bread of life that's
- 1:12going to sustain us. So that all happens in today's
- 1:15reading as we see Jesus feeding, teaching, challenging and
- 1:20opening the eyes of these people and us too.
- 1:24Here we are 2000 years later, but still just as blown away,
- 1:29enamoured and transformed by Jesus.
- 1:33So let us read this together. Let's read together John chapter
- 1:366. After this, Jesus crossed over
- 1:49to the far side of the Sea of Galilee, also known as the Sea
- 1:53of Tiberius. A huge crowd kept following him
- 1:57wherever he went because they saw his miraculous signs as he
- 2:01healed the sick. Then Jesus climbed a hill and
- 2:05sat down with his disciples around him.
- 2:08It was nearly time for the Jewish Passover celebration.
- 2:11Jesus soon saw a huge crowd of people coming to look for him.
- 2:16Turning to Philip, he asked, where can we buy bread to feed
- 2:20all these people? He was testing Philip for.
- 2:24He already knew what he was going to do.
- 2:26Philip replied. Even if we worked for months, we
- 2:30wouldn't have enough money to feed them.
- 2:33And Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, spoke up.
- 2:37There's a young boy here with five barley loaves and two fish,
- 2:41but what good is that with this huge crowd?
- 2:45Tell everyone to sit down, Jesus said.
- 2:49So they all sat down on the grassy slopes.
- 2:52The men alone numbered about 5000.
- 2:56Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks to God, and distributed
- 3:01them to the people. Afterward, he did the same with
- 3:04the fish, and they all ate as much as they wanted.
- 3:09After everyone was full, Jesus told his disciples, Now gather
- 3:14the leftovers so that nothing is wasted.
- 3:17So they picked up the pieces and filled 12 baskets with scraps
- 3:22left by the people who had eaten from the five barley loaves.
- 3:26When the people saw him do this miraculous sign, they exclaimed,
- 3:30Surely he is the prophet we've been expecting.
- 3:34When Jesus saw that they were ready to force him to be their
- 3:38king, he slipped away into the hills by himself.
- 3:43That evening Jesus disciples went down to the shore to wait
- 3:47for him. But as darkness fell and Jesus
- 3:49still hadn't come back, they got into the boat and headed across
- 3:53the lake toward Capernaum. Soon a Gale swept down upon them
- 3:59and the sea grew very rough. They had rowed 3 or 4 miles when
- 4:04suddenly they saw Jesus walking on the water toward the boat.
- 4:09They were terrified, but He called out to them.
- 4:13Don't be afraid, I am here. Then they were eager to let him
- 4:19into the boat, and immediately they arrived at their
- 4:22destination. The next day the crowd that had
- 4:26stayed on the far shore saw that the disciples had taken the only
- 4:30boat and they realised Jesus had not gone with them.
- 4:34Several boats from Tiberius landed near the place where the
- 4:37Lord had blessed the bread and the people had eaten.
- 4:40So when the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples
- 4:43were there, they got into the boats and went across to
- 4:47Capernaum to look for him. They found him on the other side
- 4:50of the lake and asked Rabbi, when did you get here?
- 4:55Jesus replied. I tell you the truth.
- 4:58You want to be with me because I fed you, not because you
- 5:02understood the miraculous signs. But don't be so concerned about
- 5:07perishable things like food. Spend your energy seeking the
- 5:11eternal life that the Son of Man can give you.
- 5:15For God the Father has given me the seal of his approval, They
- 5:20replied. We want to perform God's works
- 5:23too. What should we do?
- 5:26Jesus told them. This is the only work God wants
- 5:30from you. Believe in the one He has sent,
- 5:35they answered. Show us a miraculous sign.
- 5:38If you want us to believe in you, what can you do?
- 5:42After all, our ancestors ate manna while they journeyed
- 5:45through the wilderness, the scripture says.
- 5:48Moses gave them bread from heaven to eat, Jesus said.
- 5:52I tell you the truth. Moses didn't give you bread from
- 5:56heaven, My Father did, and now he offers you the true bread
- 6:01from heaven. The true bread of God is the one
- 6:05who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.
- 6:09Sir, they said, give us that bread every day.
- 6:14Jesus replied, I am the bread of life.
- 6:18Whoever comes to me will never be hungry again.
- 6:22Whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.
- 6:26But you haven't believed in me, even though you have seen me.
- 6:30However, those the Father has given me will come to me, and I
- 6:34will never reject them. For I have come down from heaven
- 6:38to do the will of God, who sent me not to do my own will.
- 6:43And this is the will of God, that I should not lose even one
- 6:48of all those He has given me, but that I should raise them up
- 6:52at the last day. For it is my Father's will that
- 6:56all who see the Son and believe in Him should have eternal life.
- 7:02I will raise them up at the last day.
- 7:06Then the people began to murmur in disagreement.
- 7:09Because he had said, I am the bread that comes down from
- 7:12heaven. They said, Isn't this Jesus, the
- 7:17son of Joseph? We know his father and mother.
- 7:20How can you say I came down from heaven?
- 7:23But Jesus replied, stop complaining about what I said,
- 7:28for no one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws
- 7:33them to me, and at the last day I will raise them up.
- 7:38As it is written in the scriptures, they will all be
- 7:41taught by God. Everyone who listens to the
- 7:44Father and learns from Him comes to me.
- 7:48Not that anyone has ever seen the Father.
- 7:51Only I, who was sent from God, have seen him.
- 7:56I tell you the truth. Anyone who believes has eternal
- 8:00life. Yes, I am the bread of life.
- 8:04Your ancestors ate manner in the wilderness, but they all died.
- 8:09Anyone who eats the bread from heaven, however, will never die.
- 8:13I am the living bread that came down from heaven.
- 8:18Anyone who eats this bread will live forever, and this bread
- 8:22which I will offer so the world may live, is my flesh.
- 8:29Then the people began arguing with each other about what he
- 8:31meant. How can this man give us his
- 8:34flesh to eat? They asked.
- 8:37So Jesus said again. I tell you the truth.
- 8:41Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood,
- 8:46you cannot have eternal life within you.
- 8:50But anyone who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal
- 8:55life, and I will raise that person at the last day.
- 9:00For my flesh is true food and my blood is true drink.
- 9:06Anyone who eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me,
- 9:10and I in Him. I live because of the living
- 9:15Father who sent me, in the same way anyone who feeds on me will
- 9:20live because of me. I am the true bread that came
- 9:25down from heaven. Anyone who eats this bread will
- 9:29not die as your ancestors did, even though they ate the Manor,
- 9:34but will live forever. He said these things while he
- 9:39was teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum.
- 9:42Many of his disciples said this is very hard to understand, how
- 9:48can anyone accept it? Jesus was aware that his
- 9:52disciples were complaining so he said to them, Does this offend
- 9:56you? Then What will you think if you
- 9:59see the Son of Man ascend to heaven again?
- 10:03The Spirit alone gives eternal life.
- 10:06Human effort accomplishes nothing, and the very words I
- 10:10have spoken to you are Spirit and life.
- 10:15But some of you do not believe me.
- 10:18For Jesus knew from the beginning which ones didn't
- 10:20believe, and he knew who would betray him.
- 10:24Then he said, That is why I said that people can't come to me
- 10:29unless the Father gives them to me.
- 10:32At that point many of his disciples turned away and
- 10:36deserted him. Then Jesus turned to the 12 and
- 10:39asked, Are you also going to leave?
- 10:43Simon Peter replied, Lord, to whom would we go?
- 10:49You have the words that give eternal life.
- 10:52We believe and we know you are the holy one of God.
- 10:58Then Jesus said, I chose the 12 of you, but one is a devil.
- 11:06He was Speaking of Judas, son of Simon Iscariot, one of the 12
- 11:11who would later betray him. A lot as we hear your words,
- 11:23with the benefit of hindsight, we understand what you mean
- 11:27speaking about eating your flesh and drinking your blood as we
- 11:30come to you in communion. But we can understand how
- 11:33confusing it would have been for those early disciples.
- 11:37And Lord, what a wonderful lesson this is for us, that even
- 11:41when we don't understand your teaching, even when we don't
- 11:44understand what we're doing, we just need to cling to You just
- 11:49as Simon Peter did in that moment, knowing that, Lord, it
- 11:54is your words that bring us eternal life.
- 11:58It is you who is the bread of life that will bring us
- 12:02nourished eternally home to you and the Father through the
- 12:09Spirit. So Jesus, Bread of Life, I pray
- 12:13that you nourish us and sustain us as you've promised you will
- 12:17all the days of this life, until we stand with you face to face
- 12:22on that glorious day. Now we love you, Jesus, and we
- 12:27thank you that you accept us as your disciples.
- 12:30And we thank you, Father, for giving us to Jesus.
- 12:35What a wonderful gift this faith is that you've given us.
- 12:39So in that faith, we pray all of these things in your name,
- 12:42Jesus, Amen.
