- 0:05Speaker 1: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the right time, a wave original.
- 0:09Speaker 1: My name is Beaumont Jones. Thanks for listening wherever you
- 0:11Speaker 1: get your podcast. Thanks for watching us on YouTube. Subscribe, like,
- 0:16Speaker 1: rate us, review us, give us five stars. You only
- 0:18Speaker 1: give us four stars. I'm inclined to believe you are
- 0:21Speaker 1: a hater. It is Super Bowl week. So, of course,
- 0:25Speaker 1: we're going to talk about the Grammys and a few
- 0:28Speaker 1: other things and the Epstein files.
- 0:30Speaker 2: But This is, you know, I guess, Brian, you've only really.
- 0:33Speaker 1: Been working in the game here, truly in the midst
- 0:35Speaker 1: of the full-on internet era.
- 0:37Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 0:38Speaker 2: But it is interesting how.
- 0:40Speaker 1: Super Bowl week is not nearly as dominated by the
- 0:46Speaker 1: Super Bowl in the zeitgeist as it used to be.
- 0:49Speaker 1: Because now we just got so much other bullshit to
- 0:51Speaker 1: talk about.
- 0:52Speaker 4: Right.
- 0:53Speaker 2: Like, that used to not.
- 0:54Speaker 1: Be the case, but it used to be like, it's Monday, media,
- 0:57Speaker 1: or I think Monday or Tuesday, but like media day, right?
- 0:59Speaker 3: That's now.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Super Bowl opening night or something like that.
- 1:02Speaker 1: Because media day does not mean the same thing because
- 1:05Speaker 1: you see these.
- 1:05Speaker 2: People all the time.
- 1:06Speaker 3: All the time, yeah.
- 1:07Speaker 2: No one is just introducing themselves to America in that way.
- 1:10Speaker 3: I think I caught the last wave of that because
- 1:12Speaker 3: that was like the mid-2010s.
- 1:15Speaker 1: Yeah, and even then, I remember it started feeling like, huh. Like,
- 1:18Speaker 1: to me, the biggest event... of uh super bowl week
- 1:23Speaker 1: is actually the nba trade deadline which is thursday at
- 1:27Speaker 1: three o'clock be on the lookout if there's something happening
- 1:29Speaker 1: we'll be having a quick reaction about that one but
- 1:32Speaker 1: the super bowl itself does not fill the week in
- 1:35Speaker 1: the way that it used to like we don't need
- 1:37Speaker 1: a press conference every day from the super bowl to
- 1:40Speaker 1: give us things that we can talk about during the
- 1:43Speaker 1: week we don't we don't need that Um, so instead
- 1:46Speaker 1: we get to talk about what the NFL maybe doesn't
- 1:49Speaker 1: want us to talk about, or you know what? They
- 1:51Speaker 1: just might not give a fuck, which is we had
- 1:54Speaker 1: 10 head coaching openings this year.
- 1:56Speaker 2: I would like to take a moment to point.
- 1:57Speaker 1: Out 10 head coaching openings is a lot guys. It's
- 2:01Speaker 1: damn near 30% of the league turned over their coaches
- 2:06Speaker 1: this year. And you know, whose fault it is. Kersignetti, man.
- 2:12Speaker 1: Ain't no excuses, Indiana won. You gonna tell me you
- 2:15Speaker 1: can't win with the Raiders? Indiana just won a national championship.
- 2:18Speaker 2: Hey man, it's the Cardinals.
- 2:20Speaker 1: Indiana just won a national championship. That's trickling down all
- 2:23Speaker 1: the way to here. Get ready, in the NBA, Chris
- 2:25Speaker 1: Cignetti gonna get some of y'all fired too. But anyway,
- 2:28Speaker 1: 10 head coaches were hired. None of them were black.
- 2:36Speaker 1: Not even the dude named Joe. Not even the dude
- 2:40Speaker 1: named Jesse. Not even the dude named Robert who keeps
- 2:43Speaker 1: a fade or a bald. I can't tell exactly what
- 2:45Speaker 1: he's going here, but nope. Shit, two Mikes. Neither one
- 2:49Speaker 1: of them was black. Nope. We got a dude whose
- 2:53Speaker 1: name is spelled unconventionally. He ain't even black, but Ryan,
- 2:58Speaker 1: it's the white people unconventional spelling.
- 3:00Speaker 2: You know who I'm talking about, right?
- 3:01Speaker 3: You're going to have to enlighten me.
- 3:03Speaker 2: Clint with a K.
- 3:04Speaker 3: Oh, yeah. I forgot we're on week two of Clint Gubiak.
- 3:09Speaker 1: Yeah, and I mean, look, you know what? What's his name?
- 3:11Speaker 1: Roger Clemens did this too, right? But the thing with
- 3:13Speaker 1: Roger Clemens is his last name is C. He named
- 3:16Speaker 1: them all K because Ks are strikeouts.
- 3:18Speaker 2: Whoa, buddy. That was a bit much.
- 3:21Speaker 1: But anyway.
- 3:22Speaker 3: Talk about someone who I'm glad doesn't have a podcast.
- 3:24Speaker 2: Buddy.
- 3:25Speaker 3: Buddy, buddy.
- 3:27Speaker 1: He probably ain't even got no computer. But Gary Kubiak, Mr. Knipple,
- 3:32Speaker 1: all you white people who give your kids these KK names,
- 3:35Speaker 1: don't do this to us, because we're going to have
- 3:38Speaker 1: that question. That being said, it's the great irony, Ryan,
- 3:41Speaker 1: that the guy that really messed up in naming his
- 3:43Speaker 1: kid is the guy who you would think would not
- 3:46Speaker 1: make this mistake, and that would be Steve Kerr. For
- 3:50Speaker 1: those of you who don't know, Steve Kerr has a
- 3:53Speaker 1: son named Nicholas Knipple. who I believe has begun to
- 3:57Speaker 1: go as Nicholas in public.
- 3:59Speaker 2: But used to go by the shortening of Nicholas.
- 4:01Speaker 1: Yes, as opposed to he used to go by Nick
- 4:05Speaker 1: in his regular life, meaning his name was Nick Kerr,
- 4:08Speaker 1: and you have to say it really slow.
- 4:10Speaker 3: I'm going to stick with Nicholas.
- 4:11Speaker 1: Yeah, you know what? Or just Nick.
- 4:14Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 4:15Speaker 2: Right.
- 4:15Speaker 1: He just he just going to be Nick. That's that's
- 4:17Speaker 1: that's all it could be. Maybe he you know what
- 4:19Speaker 1: he needs to do. He needs to turn into a nickname.
- 4:22Speaker 1: He needs to get out here and see if he
- 4:23Speaker 1: can borrow that nickname from Nick Foles. Right. That's what
- 4:28Speaker 1: he needed to do. He needed to go out here
- 4:29Speaker 1: and get him a reputation in these streets. And then
- 4:32Speaker 1: they could start calling him BDN. He could carry it out.
- 4:36Speaker 1: But anyway, back to these coaches. No black coaches were
- 4:40Speaker 1: hired in this cycle, though it is important to note
- 4:42Speaker 1: that Robert Sala is Lebanese and from around Detroit. Well,
- 4:47Speaker 1: he's from Dearborn, Michigan, and that's their town. They got
- 4:52Speaker 1: that one, okay? You know, they went ahead and got
- 4:55Speaker 1: that one. But that leads to, you know, semi-annual hand-wringing
- 5:03Speaker 1: about hiring and Rooney Rules stuff and kind of looking
- 5:07Speaker 1: at the fact that These things really go in cycles. Now,
- 5:11Speaker 1: I used to do something every year on the Rooney Rule,
- 5:16Speaker 1: and I kind of stopped in part because of the
- 5:19Speaker 1: reason why I have to remind myself sometimes like, oh man,
- 5:22Speaker 1: it's Martin Luther King Day.
- 5:23Speaker 2: You know, you got something else on that.
- 5:25Speaker 1: Because it felt to a degree like I was saying
- 5:27Speaker 1: something new every year. And I try my best for
- 5:30Speaker 1: those of y'all who are like dedicated to the squad.
- 5:33Speaker 1: I kind of try my best not to repeat myself.
- 5:36Speaker 2: And I guess in a way, It can feel a
- 5:39Speaker 2: little bit. I don't know.
- 5:42Speaker 1: I don't I don't want to say it felt like
- 5:44Speaker 1: there was no point, but it becomes somewhat difficult when
- 5:49Speaker 1: it's just like, OK, so what's the new angle that
- 5:52Speaker 1: I'm supposed to come up with about this? There's no
- 5:55Speaker 1: point that I can make that hasn't been made before.
- 6:01Speaker 1: But at the same time, this motherfucker still ain't listening. Therefore,
- 6:05Speaker 1: maybe I just need to keep making it. I don't
- 6:08Speaker 1: know exactly what it is that we are supposed to
- 6:12Speaker 1: do on this one. Now, I have always felt that collectively,
- 6:17Speaker 1: we do a terrible job in discussing this.
- 6:20Speaker 2: On one hand, it's the, you should.
- 6:23Speaker 1: Just hire the best candidate.
- 6:26Speaker 3: Okay.
- 6:27Speaker 2: You should be able to hire whoever you want. Not quite.
- 6:31Speaker 4: Right.
- 6:32Speaker 1: And then we get to the flip side of this,
- 6:34Speaker 1: which is, you know, people on the other side.
- 6:36Speaker 2: They're just sick of it.
- 6:39Speaker 5: Right.
- 6:39Speaker 1: And it could be put in italics and it could
- 6:42Speaker 1: refer to many different things. But the bottom line is
- 6:46Speaker 1: there's a little sick of it.
- 6:47Speaker 4: Right.
- 6:48Speaker 2: Well, what was the the sign that woman had?
- 6:51Speaker 1: I forget. It was maybe 10 years ago during one
- 6:53Speaker 1: of the protests. I was like, I can't believe I
- 6:55Speaker 1: still got to protest this shit.
- 6:56Speaker 3: Right.
- 6:57Speaker 1: Right. This feels very similar when it comes to the
- 7:01Speaker 1: Rooney Rule. Now, to me, there are a couple of
- 7:03Speaker 1: worrisome things or patterns, we should say, or events that
- 7:06Speaker 1: have happened in this. Number one, they used to do
- 7:09Speaker 1: this kind of like speed dating event. I can't remember
- 7:13Speaker 1: exactly what the name is, but it would get a
- 7:16Speaker 1: bunch of coaches and a bunch of people who work
- 7:19Speaker 1: with teams in the same room, and they would just
- 7:21Speaker 1: kind of bounce from table to table and basically do
- 7:25Speaker 1: speed dating to introduce themselves to the people who were
- 7:28Speaker 1: in charge. And the argument behind it was that there
- 7:32Speaker 1: are social networks at place that these black coaches do
- 7:35Speaker 1: not get into. And therefore they don't have the opportunities
- 7:40Speaker 1: to get FaceTime with these executives and to meet them.
- 7:43Speaker 1: So if you put them in these positions to go
- 7:46Speaker 1: around these rooms, then they would have the opportunity to
- 7:49Speaker 1: meet these people. And I guess to a degree that
- 7:52Speaker 1: made sense about my question on the other end was,
- 7:54Speaker 1: I don't have a full understanding of how it is
- 7:56Speaker 1: the white people were winding up meeting these same folks.
- 8:01Speaker 1: You understand what I'm saying? Like, Yeah, we get it
- 8:04Speaker 1: that social networks, race can be a barrier to entry
- 8:09Speaker 1: into these social networks. But end of the day, you
- 8:11Speaker 1: a quality control man at one of these teams, we
- 8:14Speaker 1: need to talk more about how it is that this
- 8:15Speaker 1: white man gets to meet who the man is at
- 8:17Speaker 1: the top. Like the speed dating thing, basically, it seems
- 8:22Speaker 1: to me to imply a different argument. It's not even
- 8:25Speaker 1: the argument of, hey, man, white people feel more comfortable
- 8:29Speaker 1: with white people. Black people feel more comfortable with black people.
- 8:32Speaker 1: It's not even that argument. It is making the implication
- 8:35Speaker 1: that there is no way for black people to get
- 8:38Speaker 1: known by.
- 8:39Speaker 2: These other people.
- 8:40Speaker 1: And I guess the question I always had about that
- 8:43Speaker 1: was that how they get the jobs that they have
- 8:44Speaker 1: in the first place. Right.
- 8:46Speaker 2: But at least they were trying.
- 8:50Speaker 1: And it felt to me, remember, they made some expansions
- 8:52Speaker 1: on the Rooney Rule, right? You had to interview two
- 8:55Speaker 1: non-white candidates for these head coaching jobs. And you had
- 8:59Speaker 1: to do this also for coordinator jobs. And I noticed,
- 9:02Speaker 1: at least with my own eyes, at least maybe this
- 9:04Speaker 1: was just anecdotal, but it sure felt like we had
- 9:07Speaker 1: more black coordinators or at the very least more black
- 9:11Speaker 1: defensive coordinators. Now, the real barrier had typically been Black
- 9:17Speaker 1: offensive coordinators. And that remains a barrier. And that becomes
- 9:21Speaker 1: an important point that we'll get to. But I did
- 9:23Speaker 1: feel like we were seeing more black defensive coordinators get
- 9:27Speaker 1: that get that job. Like I can name more black
- 9:29Speaker 1: defensive coordinators off the top of my head now than
- 9:32Speaker 1: I probably have at any other point in my life.
- 9:36Speaker 2: Uh Raheem Morris.
- 9:37Speaker 1: Just got the job as defensive coordinator for the 49ers
- 9:42Speaker 1: Kelvin Shepard has the job in Detroit where he replaced
- 9:46Speaker 1: Aaron Glenn who became a head coach was basically his
- 9:49Speaker 1: own defensive coordinator uh Zach Orr was the defensive coordinator
- 9:52Speaker 1: in Baltimore he's going to wind up it looks like
- 9:54Speaker 1: making a move to get another gig The dude at Carolina,
- 9:58Speaker 1: the Nigerian cat.
- 9:59Speaker 2: I don't remember how to say his name.
- 10:01Speaker 1: There's him. There's Vance Joseph in Denver, who is their
- 10:06Speaker 1: defensive coordinator. I'm not saying that my ability to name
- 10:09Speaker 1: these five guys has completely changed the world. I am
- 10:14Speaker 1: saying that I couldn't always name five guys. All right.
- 10:20Speaker 1: There is a measure of progress in that that I
- 10:24Speaker 1: think is important to note. I also think that it
- 10:27Speaker 1: is important to note that while of these 10, none
- 10:31Speaker 1: were black. Ryan, you help me out if I'm missing
- 10:33Speaker 1: anybody here, but I've got Aaron Glenn, Ty Bowles, I
- 10:39Speaker 1: guess Mike Tomlin just left of his own volition, but
- 10:42Speaker 1: Aaron Glenn, Ty Bowles.
- 10:45Speaker 3: D'Amico Ryans.
- 10:46Speaker 1: D'Amico Ryans, damn, is that everybody?
- 10:49Speaker 3: That might be everybody.
- 10:50Speaker 1: Damn, I was actually hoping to do this with a
- 10:53Speaker 1: little bit more of a flourish. I didn't expect this
- 10:57Speaker 1: to go away. Yeah, well, I mean, the other problem
- 11:00Speaker 1: that happens is when you fire the black coach, unless
- 11:03Speaker 1: they try to save money, they ain't going to hire
- 11:05Speaker 1: another one. Right? Like the Texans got super, well, no,
- 11:10Speaker 1: the Texans had that thing where they were so sorry
- 11:12Speaker 1: only a black man would take that job. Remember when
- 11:14Speaker 1: they hired the dude that nobody had ever heard of?
- 11:18Speaker 1: And then they hired Lovey Smith, who nobody else would hire.
- 11:21Speaker 1: But then they did hire D'Amico Ryans. And we're fortunate
- 11:24Speaker 1: that he was willing to take the job. They had
- 11:26Speaker 1: a wife from Houston. And if you know anything about
- 11:28Speaker 1: people from Houston, they always ready to get right back, right?
- 11:33Speaker 1: That worked out well. You see how that is going
- 11:36Speaker 1: for them, right? I think it's important at every step
- 11:41Speaker 1: to acknowledge what is the case and not get quite
- 11:44Speaker 1: as locked into what is not the case. All right. Now,
- 11:48Speaker 1: the issue is with only those three. And if any
- 11:51Speaker 1: of them wind up like Todd Bowles, how much longer
- 11:53Speaker 1: are you going to be able to keep that job,
- 11:54Speaker 1: for example? Right.
- 11:56Speaker 3: Yeah. On the hot seat this year.
- 11:57Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Aaron Glenn. Let me tell you something.
- 12:02Speaker 1: If I was in the business of arguing that racism
- 12:05Speaker 1: was over, which I will never be in the business of,
- 12:07Speaker 1: but if I was in that business, Aaron Glenn is
- 12:10Speaker 1: getting to go to year two.
- 12:13Speaker 3: And he fired his whole staff, like his whole offensive staff,
- 12:16Speaker 3: like on Thursday.
- 12:18Speaker 1: Look, we both live in this city. We both paid
- 12:20Speaker 1: attention to that team. I would not have called the
- 12:25Speaker 1: NAACP if they had fired Aaron Glenn.
- 12:28Speaker 2: I would not have expended a morsel of capital. On
- 12:32Speaker 2: that one. They looked awful. He did not handle the
- 12:36Speaker 2: job well. All of those things.
- 12:38Speaker 3: I hate to use the Q word, but they quit
- 12:41Speaker 3: around Thanksgiving.
- 12:42Speaker 1: They did quit.
- 12:43Speaker 3: And they had five more football games to play.
- 12:45Speaker 1: They didn't make an interception the whole year.
- 12:50Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 12:50Speaker 2: He got to keep his job.
- 12:55Speaker 3: With Woody Johnson as his owner.
- 12:57Speaker 1: There's... There's something. Woody Johnson, who, by the way, he
- 13:01Speaker 1: hired Sala?
- 13:03Speaker 2: Well, no, he didn't hire Sala.
- 13:04Speaker 1: That happened when he was over there in the UK, right?
- 13:08Speaker 1: It was Ireland. I can't remember which one.
- 13:11Speaker 2: Herm Edwards. That was his guy. He hired him.
- 13:14Speaker 1: And Todd Bowles.
- 13:15Speaker 3: Yep.
- 13:18Speaker 1: You know what Woody Johnson is? Woody Johnson is the coaches. Well,
- 13:21Speaker 1: Bud Adams was the quarterbacks. I don't want to talk
- 13:24Speaker 1: to you about politics, but I got to say, when
- 13:26Speaker 1: you want to make a case for yourself... I kind
- 13:29Speaker 1: of got to stand down for a bit. But the
- 13:32Speaker 1: 10th thing is not, it's, here's what was not encouraging
- 13:35Speaker 1: to me. And Ryan, you and I both, we read
- 13:38Speaker 1: a lot about these things. We pay attention.
- 13:41Speaker 2: There's not a name anymore. Like, remember, Eric B. Enemy
- 13:44Speaker 2: was the name. When is somebody going to give Eric B.
- 13:46Speaker 1: Enemy a job? And I fell off of that because
- 13:48Speaker 1: I was like, they was giving other brothers jobs and
- 13:49Speaker 1: they weren't giving him one. Right. For whatever reason, Mike
- 13:52Speaker 1: Zimmer used to be that guy. Vic Fangio used to
- 13:55Speaker 1: be that guy like white guys. Now, granted, these are
- 13:56Speaker 1: defensive guys, but guys that people like now we just
- 13:59Speaker 1: not giving you this. We don't we don't see a
- 14:01Speaker 1: head coach in you.
- 14:02Speaker 3: Matt Nagy now. Yes.
- 14:04Speaker 1: Yes.
- 14:04Speaker 2: But hey, but he got a chance.
- 14:05Speaker 1: Like that was the thing that made it frustrating with
- 14:07Speaker 1: the enemy is that it felt like every offensive coordinator Andy.
- 14:10Speaker 2: Reid ever had.
- 14:11Speaker 3: Yes.
- 14:12Speaker 1: Got a chance.
- 14:13Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 14:13Speaker 1: Except for this guy, but there's no name. Like there's
- 14:16Speaker 1: nobody that was being pushed and bandied around. And the
- 14:20Speaker 1: reason is right now, you correct me if I'm wrong here,
- 14:24Speaker 1: we're in boy genius mode in terms of the coaches
- 14:27Speaker 1: that people want to hire. Like, so you've got the
- 14:31Speaker 1: John Harbaugh, Mike McCarthy, who I think of their own class, right?
- 14:34Speaker 1: Guys with impeccable resumes, Super Bowl championships, you know, they're
- 14:39Speaker 1: their own thing. But the kind of Shanahan McVay.
- 14:43Speaker 2: Boy genius class is these other guys.
- 14:46Speaker 1: The Kevin Stefanski, Joe Brady, who's not in that same tree,
- 14:51Speaker 1: but you remember when he was the boy genius, right?
- 14:54Speaker 1: Coming off the LSU thing. This has been, he been
- 14:57Speaker 1: boy genius for so long, he's still a boy. Yeah.
- 15:00Speaker 1: He's not 40 yet.
- 15:01Speaker 3: Is he? I think he is. I think Joe Brady
- 15:04Speaker 3: is right at the cusp of 40.
- 15:06Speaker 1: Yeah, because I want to say he was like 32
- 15:08Speaker 1: or 33.
- 15:08Speaker 3: 36.
- 15:08Speaker 1: He's 36.
- 15:11Speaker 2: Right.
- 15:12Speaker 1: You know, Michael LaFleur, Matt LaFleur's brother, but another one
- 15:15Speaker 1: of those McVay guys in that class. Jesse Mentor, though defensive,
- 15:21Speaker 1: kind of sort of in that in that boy genius class.
- 15:24Speaker 2: I don't know that much about the Halfley guy.
- 15:26Speaker 4: Do you?
- 15:27Speaker 3: I mean, he used to coach at Boston. He went
- 15:30Speaker 3: from Boston to Green Bay to Miami, so.
- 15:32Speaker 1: Yeah, but all these guys, like Mike McDaniel was in
- 15:35Speaker 1: the boy genius class. The only black dude right now
- 15:39Speaker 1: that seems to be in the boy genius class is
- 15:42Speaker 1: that Nate Sheilhas guy who's down there with the Rams.
- 15:45Speaker 1: And I'm telling you, somebody going to be real weirded
- 15:48Speaker 1: out when they call him into that interview and he
- 15:50Speaker 1: walks in. They're like, yeah, so where's Mr. Sheilhas?
- 15:53Speaker 3: Yeah, where's Mr. S?
- 15:53Speaker 2: Yeah, and he's like, me.
- 15:56Speaker 1: No, but.
- 15:58Speaker 2: Yeah, he black. S-H-E-E-L-H-A-A-S-E, I believe is how you spell it.
- 16:02Speaker 2: But he a black man, right?
- 16:04Speaker 1: Not everybody going to be, like Mike McDaniel, when he
- 16:06Speaker 1: gets in, Mike McDaniel gets in there and talks about,
- 16:07Speaker 1: as a black man, what you mean?
- 16:10Speaker 2: As a black man, what you talking about? I don't understand.
- 16:13Speaker 1: But that's the place that the black dudes can't get
- 16:15Speaker 1: to is the boy genius class. That's the hard part.
- 16:18Speaker 1: You can get to the really good defensive mind. Like,
- 16:21Speaker 1: so Brian Flores is an interesting case. Now, I've sealed
- 16:24Speaker 1: you many times. I would not hire Brian Flores.
- 16:27Speaker 4: Right.
- 16:29Speaker 1: And by the way, he did get on when he
- 16:31Speaker 1: was kind of seeing his Belichick genius guy.
- 16:33Speaker 2: He got on. It's just he's.
- 16:35Speaker 1: Never for for a slew of reasons, some of which
- 16:39Speaker 1: have to do with coaching, most of which have to
- 16:41Speaker 1: do with personality and one of which is a lawsuit.
- 16:45Speaker 1: He's not going to wind up getting that job. But offense,
- 16:48Speaker 1: we still can't get there. The holdup remains becoming offensive
- 16:54Speaker 1: boy genius guy, or even just offensive coordinator. That remains
- 16:59Speaker 1: the holdup. I don't know, or in my own head,
- 17:03Speaker 1: I don't have mechanics or mechanisms for breaking through that
- 17:08Speaker 1: one particular place. But that's the holdup. Like looking at
- 17:12Speaker 1: these hires, Stefanski, offensive guy. McCarthy, Brady, Munkin, Kubiak, LaFleur.
- 17:18Speaker 1: They lean toward offensive guys because if you have a
- 17:21Speaker 1: very good offensive guy, somebody else is going to try
- 17:23Speaker 1: to hire him and you're going to eventually have to
- 17:25Speaker 1: make him the head coach anyway. That's what the argument becomes, right?
- 17:30Speaker 1: I just know this, and I want to close with
- 17:33Speaker 1: this because I think that this part is very important.
- 17:37Speaker 1: The problem with hiring as it relates to race in
- 17:42Speaker 1: the NFL is not the Rooney rules. The problem is
- 17:48Speaker 1: that not that the Rooney rule is ineffective, okay? That
- 17:55Speaker 1: would be like saying that the problem with cancer is
- 17:59Speaker 1: that you can't fix it with an aspirin. That is
- 18:02Speaker 1: not about the limitations of aspirin. That's about the problem
- 18:07Speaker 1: with cancer. And the NFL has a cancer of racism
- 18:13Speaker 1: when it comes to hiring people at these levels.
- 18:17Speaker 2: The problem is them.
- 18:20Speaker 1: Dan Graziano, my buddy who I like a lot, he
- 18:23Speaker 1: sent a tweet out that says something about how this
- 18:25Speaker 1: was not.
- 18:25Speaker 2: A banner year for the Rooney rule. No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
- 18:29Speaker 1: And I'm not like I don't chastise Dan for this.
- 18:33Speaker 1: I think he just fell into an error that a
- 18:35Speaker 1: lot of people fall into when it comes to the
- 18:37Speaker 1: phrasing on this. And that is to blame the rule
- 18:39Speaker 1: because nobody wants to blame the white people. The problem
- 18:43Speaker 1: in this case is the white people who do, or
- 18:46Speaker 1: more accurately, do not do some of this hiring. The
- 18:50Speaker 1: issue there is them. The issue is the owners. It's
- 18:53Speaker 1: all these people on top. They are the problem. And
- 19:00Speaker 1: I don't think that we could ever truly have any
- 19:03Speaker 1: measure of solution on this until we are more honest
- 19:07Speaker 1: about who the issue is. The issue is the people
- 19:11Speaker 1: who ultimately decided to enact a Rooney Rule just because
- 19:14Speaker 1: Johnny Cochran, rest in peace, was about to sue them
- 19:17Speaker 1: into the ground.
- 19:19Speaker 2: That is what made them act.
- 19:21Speaker 1: It is only under the threat of litigation that they
- 19:23Speaker 1: will act. Now, what is tricky, as I have said,
- 19:26Speaker 1: are people like, we need to get rid of the
- 19:27Speaker 1: Rooney Rule.
- 19:27Speaker 2: I'm like, no, no, no.
- 19:28Speaker 1: They don't want to do that because they don't want
- 19:29Speaker 1: to wind up back in court. But I don't have
- 19:31Speaker 1: any idea if you can go to court anymore about
- 19:33Speaker 1: race stuff, given the rules of the current regime and
- 19:37Speaker 1: everything else, right? I don't have the answers on that part.
- 19:43Speaker 1: But I just want to remind everybody something that we
- 19:47Speaker 1: often forget or in our phrasing we ignore. I did
- 19:53Speaker 1: an event the other night with my good buddy Howard
- 19:56Speaker 1: Bryant for his book at the Jackie Robinson Museum. And
- 20:02Speaker 1: Jackie Robinson's son David had flown in from Tanzania And
- 20:05Speaker 1: he stood up and he talked about progress and how
- 20:08Speaker 1: sometimes we can talk about how we have not seen
- 20:10Speaker 1: all the progress that we want to see. But there
- 20:12Speaker 1: has been great progress over time. And I think coaching
- 20:16Speaker 1: is an interesting place for that because there has been progress.
- 20:20Speaker 1: Like I was alive for the first black head coach
- 20:24Speaker 1: that we all admitted was black and got a job
- 20:28Speaker 1: in the modern era. And that was Art Shell. Right.
- 20:32Speaker 1: You ever heard of Wayne Fonts?
- 20:36Speaker 3: I have not.
- 20:37Speaker 1: Okay, Wayne Fonts used to coach the Lions. I want
- 20:41Speaker 1: you to look up a picture of Wayne Fonts. Go
- 20:45Speaker 1: ahead and look at it right now.
- 20:49Speaker 3: Yep.
- 20:49Speaker 1: I just want to point out to you that he
- 20:51Speaker 1: became a head coach the year before Art Schell. I
- 20:56Speaker 1: also want to point out to you that Wayne Fonts,
- 20:59Speaker 1: his people are from Cape Verde.
- 21:03Speaker 2: I don't know about you.
- 21:04Speaker 1: But people from Cape Verde are black everywhere else I've
- 21:07Speaker 1: heard of.
- 21:08Speaker 3: That was my understanding as well.
- 21:09Speaker 2: However, somehow he just slipped through.
- 21:12Speaker 1: The pioneer hiding in plain sight.
- 21:16Speaker 2: And he probably still at the house like, man.
- 21:17Speaker 1: If you don't shut your black ass up. Quiet, quiet.
- 21:22Speaker 1: But anyway, I was alive when Art Shell got this.
- 21:25Speaker 1: I have seen stretches where there was six or seven people.
- 21:27Speaker 1: Blackhead coaches. I've seen the Saturdays of the Rooney Rule
- 21:30Speaker 1: where they were out here making moves. I remember when
- 21:33Speaker 1: Tony Dungy got fired in Tampa and Jim Irsay said,
- 21:37Speaker 1: my number one candidate is Tony Dungy and went down
- 21:39Speaker 1: and hired Tony Dungy, right? Things are not what they were.
- 21:44Speaker 1: They are not good enough, but it is important for
- 21:47Speaker 1: those of us who speak on these matters to acknowledge
- 21:49Speaker 1: where things have gotten better, okay? But I brought up
- 21:52Speaker 1: what David Robinson said about progress because I made a
- 21:55Speaker 1: point there that we can never forget is that when
- 21:57Speaker 1: it comes to progress, In this presence of racism, it
- 22:02Speaker 1: is not me and my people who need to make progress.
- 22:05Speaker 1: It is white people that need to make progress. It
- 22:08Speaker 1: is not us who created these circumstances. It is them
- 22:12Speaker 1: who created these circumstances. And they are the ones that
- 22:15Speaker 1: need to do better. And as I say every year
- 22:18Speaker 1: about this, the biggest winner from the Rooney Rule and
- 22:22Speaker 1: breaking down those barriers of racism would be the white people.
- 22:28Speaker 1: One black coach will get a job, okay? Two black
- 22:31Speaker 1: coaches might get a job. But if y'all start hiring
- 22:34Speaker 1: better coaches, by the way, something you've never been good
- 22:38Speaker 1: at is hiring.
- 22:38Speaker 2: Coaches, right?
- 22:40Speaker 1: Y'all should be trying to hire Martians. Y'all should be
- 22:42Speaker 1: trying anything. Like, let me tell you something. If anybody
- 22:46Speaker 1: spent a hundred motherfucking years hiring black people at something
- 22:50Speaker 1: and it didn't work, we get one chance and they
- 22:52Speaker 1: don't hire another one after that. Y'all hire white man
- 22:55Speaker 1: after white man, like the Giants. Y'all hire white men
- 23:00Speaker 1: after white men, after white men, after white men.
- 23:02Speaker 2: It ain't work one.
- 23:03Speaker 1: Time and not once if you said, maybe we should
- 23:05Speaker 1: try something crazy, right? It ain't work for you not once.
- 23:10Speaker 1: Not one person has just been like, fucking call the
- 23:13Speaker 1: black guy.
- 23:14Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm out of answers.
- 23:16Speaker 1: Right. Now, what have you made the decision that maybe
- 23:20Speaker 1: we should just try something out of the box in.
- 23:23Speaker 2: Order to make this happen?
- 23:24Speaker 1: Y'all hired Joe Judge. Y'all out here are special teams
- 23:27Speaker 1: coaches or whatever it is. And not one time because
- 23:29Speaker 1: you say to yourself, maybe we should try something else.
- 23:31Speaker 4: Right.
- 23:32Speaker 1: Y'all would be the winners if you expanded your reach
- 23:35Speaker 1: and maybe got out there and got some good coaches
- 23:37Speaker 1: and made your teams better. Right. It would serve a
- 23:41Speaker 1: black person at a time. It would serve the whole
- 23:44Speaker 1: league if you acted right. We ain't the ones that
- 23:48Speaker 1: need to make progress. They the ones that need to
- 23:51Speaker 1: make progress. So why don't you buck the trend of
- 23:54Speaker 1: American history and do something that would help you out
- 23:59Speaker 1: as opposed to just being dedicated to racism? Because that's
- 24:03Speaker 1: the thing. So many places, so many times. Ryan, you're
- 24:06Speaker 1: an LSU football fan. You're of the age, however, how
- 24:09Speaker 1: you don't remember when LSU was like, no, we just
- 24:11Speaker 1: rather be racist than win.
- 24:13Speaker 3: It was a long time.
- 24:15Speaker 4: Oh, man.
- 24:15Speaker 1: It was the whole SEC.
- 24:17Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 24:17Speaker 2: Except for Alabama.
- 24:18Speaker 1: They were like, hey, buddy.
- 24:21Speaker 2: We ain't going to take all of you, but we'll
- 24:23Speaker 2: take more than them.
- 24:24Speaker 1: Well, what was that?
- 24:25Speaker 2: We will not be out-inverted. I will tell you that.
- 24:27Speaker 1: Texas spent a long time being like, nah, we'd rather
- 24:30Speaker 1: be racist than win football games. Shit, they did it again. Well,
- 24:32Speaker 1: I don't root for them no more.
- 24:33Speaker 2: But that damn song. They were like, nah, we'd rather
- 24:36Speaker 2: be racist.
- 24:36Speaker 1: Ole Miss. you know, our state is 36% black and
- 24:40Speaker 1: black people seem to be very important in these sports.
- 24:43Speaker 2: But now we had these flags that we would rather wave.
- 24:47Speaker 2: That's America.
- 24:47Speaker 3: They'd rather rebel.
- 24:49Speaker 1: Yep. We'd rather, we would literally rather be worse than
- 24:54Speaker 1: do better. That's how this is stacked up at every
- 24:57Speaker 1: turn and they keep on doing it. And I'm just
- 25:00Speaker 1: here to tell you after one more year, Either you
- 25:05Speaker 1: let Kersignetti get somebody else fired, or.
- 25:09Speaker 2: You try something new. All right, we mentioned the NBA
- 25:17Speaker 2: trade deadline is going to be Thursday.
- 25:19Speaker 1: Ryan, you think they're going to get Giannis moved by then?
- 25:23Speaker 3: I sure hope so. I think we've been kind of
- 25:28Speaker 3: teetering and tottering about it for two and a half
- 25:30Speaker 3: years now, and I don't know if we can do
- 25:32Speaker 3: another six months of it.
- 25:33Speaker 1: He's getting it. He's not getting bad advice. I think
- 25:37Speaker 1: he's actually getting pretty good advice. He, however, when you
- 25:41Speaker 1: got to pick people, like, to emulate as an NBA superstar,
- 25:46Speaker 1: it's a long list of guys that you could choose.
- 25:49Speaker 1: You could choose to emulate Michael Jordan. You could choose
- 25:52Speaker 1: to emulate LeBron James. You want to kick it old school,
- 25:55Speaker 1: you could emulate Bill Russell. You know, it's a lot
- 25:58Speaker 1: of guys, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, that you could look
- 26:01Speaker 1: at and be like, yeah, I want to kick it
- 26:03Speaker 1: like they did, right? That'll get me to where I
- 26:05Speaker 1: want to be. I would argue that kicking it like
- 26:10Speaker 1: Dwight Howard is not what I would recommend.
- 26:16Speaker 6: Okay?
- 26:18Speaker 1: If you are outside of the paint on defense, I
- 26:23Speaker 1: don't think that emulating Dwight Howard is the way to go.
- 26:28Speaker 1: And Giannis is... apparently playing the full-on Dwight Howard role
- 26:37Speaker 1: on his way out of town. And he needs to
- 26:41Speaker 1: remember that that ended for Dwight Howard in being roundly
- 26:49Speaker 1: disliked after being pretty universally beloved for.
- 26:57Speaker 2: About eight years. But that's what we got here.
- 27:02Speaker 1: Now, for those of you who don't remember this, and
- 27:06Speaker 1: let's be clear, Dwight handled this a lot worse.
- 27:10Speaker 2: Dwight.
- 27:12Speaker 1: was set to be a free agent in Orlando. But
- 27:17Speaker 1: he wasn't going to be a free agent because his
- 27:19Speaker 1: contract was going to expire. He had a player option
- 27:24Speaker 1: to get out of his deal. And this is years
- 27:27Speaker 1: after they had been to the finals. The Magic are
- 27:29Speaker 1: not really competitive in that way. It had long been forecast.
- 27:35Speaker 1: that he was going to wind up being the next
- 27:37Speaker 1: great big man to wind up going to play for
- 27:40Speaker 1: the Lakers, following in the footsteps of Will Chamberlain, um,
- 27:43Speaker 1: and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. And we all knew this, but every
- 27:47Speaker 1: interview with Dwight was about how Dwight loved Orlando and
- 27:51Speaker 1: he's torn. And, you know, he doesn't really know what
- 27:53Speaker 1: to do, or he really loves Orlando, so forth and
- 27:55Speaker 1: so on everything else. But we all understood that Dwight
- 27:59Speaker 1: wanted to get out of there. Um, And I'm trying
- 28:03Speaker 1: to remember the exact order of events.
- 28:05Speaker 2: Ryan, do you remember.
- 28:06Speaker 1: If he opted? No, he must have opted in after
- 28:09Speaker 1: the weird Stan Van Gundy press conference. Stan Van Gundy
- 28:12Speaker 1: got in front of us and told us that Dwight
- 28:14Speaker 1: was trying to get him fired.
- 28:16Speaker 3: I think he opted. It was all within... like a
- 28:19Speaker 3: 48-hour trade deadline window. So he like opted in. I
- 28:23Speaker 3: think he opted in, then tried to get, and then
- 28:25Speaker 3: the press conference happened.
- 28:26Speaker 1: Yeah, there was a lot going on. But basically, for
- 28:28Speaker 1: those who don't remember, Stan Van Gundy's doing this press
- 28:30Speaker 1: conference where he's talking about how he's literally sick of
- 28:33Speaker 1: the bullshit that's going on and that he knows that
- 28:35Speaker 1: Dwight has tried to get him fired. And while he's
- 28:38Speaker 1: standing there saying this, Dwight comes and put his arm
- 28:41Speaker 1: around him We're all fine.
- 28:43Speaker 2: Everything's okay.
- 28:44Speaker 1: People act like we got problems. There are no problems.
- 28:47Speaker 1: And he has no idea that Stan just told everybody,
- 28:51Speaker 1: this dude's trying to get me fired. And then Stan
- 28:54Speaker 1: walked away and left him standing there to look like
- 28:57Speaker 1: a fool and nothing was the same. Then he went
- 29:00Speaker 1: and played with Kobe and Kobe did him no favors
- 29:05Speaker 1: and nothing has ever been the same.
- 29:07Speaker 2: But what ultimately went down is we viewed Dwight as
- 29:10Speaker 2: a phony from that moment on.
- 29:13Speaker 1: And I think what bothered people was everybody would have
- 29:16Speaker 1: understood if he wanted to.
- 29:18Speaker 2: Get out of town, right?
- 29:19Speaker 1: No matter what he had said before about how he
- 29:22Speaker 1: wanted to stay there forever, dah, dah, dah.
- 29:24Speaker 2: In the end, people understand things change.
- 29:26Speaker 1: Look at the divorce rate, right?
- 29:29Speaker 3: And not just change, change and go to the Lakers,
- 29:31Speaker 3: which is a tale as long as the NBA Yes.
- 29:34Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 29:34Speaker 1: But just even if it's not the Lakers, just get
- 29:36Speaker 1: me out of here.
- 29:36Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 29:37Speaker 1: I don't want to play here anymore. It was an
- 29:41Speaker 1: understandable thing. Now the trick bag for him is that
- 29:44Speaker 1: they hadn't won a championship there.
- 29:46Speaker 3: Right.
- 29:46Speaker 1: So you can make the argument of unfinished business. But
- 29:48Speaker 1: he had gotten them to the finals. He got them
- 29:50Speaker 1: to the finals on a team where the second best
- 29:52Speaker 1: player was either Hidu Turkoglu or Rashard Lewis. Right. Got
- 29:55Speaker 1: up with getting LeBron James out of there.
- 29:57Speaker 2: The best postseason version of LeBron we have ever seen.
- 30:01Speaker 1: And he got him out of there in six games.
- 30:03Speaker 4: Right.
- 30:04Speaker 2: In that one.
- 30:04Speaker 1: It took superhuman LeBron-ness to even stretch it to six.
- 30:08Speaker 3: Right.
- 30:10Speaker 1: But he looked phony. And people are like, dude, why
- 30:14Speaker 1: you keep lying to us when we know what time
- 30:16Speaker 1: it is with you? And that is exactly what is
- 30:18Speaker 1: happening with Giannis. And it is a very similar story. Now,
- 30:20Speaker 1: Dwight was the number one pick in the draft, but
- 30:22Speaker 1: they both kind of had this all shucks sort of charm. Right.
- 30:27Speaker 1: They kind of had a you know, they're the guys
- 30:28Speaker 1: that want to do the right thing. They they they
- 30:31Speaker 1: are seen as being moral white hats, basically, in this
- 30:35Speaker 1: league in a number of ways. Dwight was wrapped up
- 30:38Speaker 1: in Jesus. Giannis has like a real life. He got
- 30:42Speaker 1: an immigrant story to go with the immigrant story. Man,
- 30:46Speaker 1: man didn't have no, he was a man went out
- 30:48Speaker 1: of state in Greece with no passport. Couldn't get a
- 30:51Speaker 1: passport till he came here. That Attentacupo, that's not his name.
- 30:55Speaker 1: That's how the Greeks decided to re-spell his name when
- 30:57Speaker 1: they finally decided to give him.
- 30:58Speaker 2: A passport, right?
- 31:00Speaker 1: Like he had to live a life where he wasn't
- 31:01Speaker 1: even under his own name, where he had no country
- 31:04Speaker 1: to truly call his own. He comes over here and
- 31:07Speaker 1: is one of the most amazing NBA stories that we've
- 31:10Speaker 1: ever had.
- 31:11Speaker 2: In the ascent.
- 31:13Speaker 1: He won that championship and buddy, nobody stretching that one
- 31:17Speaker 1: ring out farther than he is. I used to say
- 31:19Speaker 1: that Dirk Nowitzki and Paul Pierce were getting the most
- 31:22Speaker 1: mileage out of their one ring out of anybody else,
- 31:26Speaker 1: just in the ways it changes your reputation, right? Like
- 31:29Speaker 1: it allows us to think of Dirk as maybe a
- 31:32Speaker 1: top 15 all-time player, but more importantly, not as a
- 31:35Speaker 1: soft Euro. It allows Paul Pierce into some different conversations,
- 31:40Speaker 1: but with Giannis, But like this, if Paul Pierce never
- 31:44Speaker 1: won a championship, we would not sit around talking about
- 31:46Speaker 1: what Paul Pierce was not.
- 31:48Speaker 2: We wouldn't do that.
- 31:49Speaker 1: Giannis is at that superstar caliber, the same way Dirk was,
- 31:53Speaker 1: where we would be talking about what you're not, right?
- 31:56Speaker 1: There has been a point where you've been the best
- 31:58Speaker 1: player in the NBA. There's an argument that Dirk Nowitzki
- 32:00Speaker 1: had that stretch also. But not only you've lost as
- 32:04Speaker 1: an eight seed, as a one seed to an eight seed,
- 32:07Speaker 1: which by the way, also in the Dirk Nowitzki playbook,
- 32:10Speaker 1: There's the blown 2-0 lead in 2019. I mean, there's
- 32:13Speaker 1: some really embarrassing postseason losses for Giannis along the way.
- 32:18Speaker 1: And we let them slide because he already got that championship.
- 32:23Speaker 4: Right.
- 32:24Speaker 1: But it's hard to overcome the label of being phony.
- 32:27Speaker 1: And the truth is you want out of there. We
- 32:30Speaker 1: all understand that you don't want to want out of there.
- 32:34Speaker 1: But you do. Does that make sense?
- 32:36Speaker 3: Yes. You don't want to want to leave, but you
- 32:40Speaker 3: want to leave.
- 32:40Speaker 1: Yeah. And look, they've done all the things to try
- 32:43Speaker 1: to keep you there. And you don't want to feel
- 32:45Speaker 1: like they did all those things in vain. But they
- 32:47Speaker 1: did all the things to try to keep you there.
- 32:50Speaker 1: And you are still playing at a level that we
- 32:52Speaker 1: would think of as MVP caliber basketball in a world
- 32:55Speaker 1: that didn't have Shea Gilders, Alexander and Jokic who's coming back.
- 32:58Speaker 4: Right.
- 32:59Speaker 2: We all get that.
- 33:01Speaker 1: But you got to stop telling us or stop pretending
- 33:04Speaker 1: like this isn't what it is. You want to go,
- 33:06Speaker 1: you're going to have to be the bad guy, right
- 33:08Speaker 1: fast and go. The truth is, if you had leveled
- 33:11Speaker 1: with all those people there and been like, look, I've
- 33:14Speaker 1: done everything I can here, but I think it's time
- 33:17Speaker 1: for me to go somewhere else. I think the people
- 33:20Speaker 1: in Milwaukee, because they got the ring, would then understand.
- 33:24Speaker 1: They see what's happened for the team. They want to
- 33:27Speaker 1: move into the future. They could talk about getting some
- 33:29Speaker 1: picks and everything else. They would ultimately be okay with you,
- 33:32Speaker 1: even if they were mad at you for a little while.
- 33:34Speaker 1: Case in point, they love LeBron again in Cleveland. Right?
- 33:40Speaker 1: And he embarrassed them in front of America.
- 33:43Speaker 2: You could be fine, but you just got to go ahead.
- 33:47Speaker 1: And own that part and be straight ahead with it.
- 33:49Speaker 1: Now for you, maybe it's too late, right? The thing
- 33:53Speaker 1: that I'm looking at, Ryan, I keep seeing these trade
- 33:55Speaker 1: packages that people say that the Bucs can get, and
- 33:57Speaker 1: I don't know about none of them.
- 33:59Speaker 3: Especially the ones for the teams he's rumored to want
- 34:02Speaker 3: to go to.
- 34:02Speaker 1: So the rumors are that he wants to go to,
- 34:04Speaker 1: and I've been told this, Minnesota, New York, and Miami.
- 34:11Speaker 1: I don't think Miami turns into a winner necessarily. You
- 34:15Speaker 1: do that if you believe.
- 34:16Speaker 2: In Pat Riley.
- 34:17Speaker 1: Right, which.
- 34:18Speaker 3: Who's getting up there.
- 34:20Speaker 2: Yeah, in 2026, I don't know about that, right?
- 34:23Speaker 1: But I would be terrified of what you do against
- 34:25Speaker 1: a team if you got Bam and Giannis.
- 34:28Speaker 3: Yeah, good luck.
- 34:29Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah.
- 34:29Speaker 1: How are you guys going to score? Okay, that's the
- 34:32Speaker 1: Nigeria going to be all. That's the Nigeria squad right there.
- 34:36Speaker 1: You know, they need to move. They can only be
- 34:38Speaker 1: more Nigerian if they played in Houston. That would be
- 34:41Speaker 1: the only way. Minnesota, a bit surprising that that's where
- 34:47Speaker 1: he says he.
- 34:48Speaker 2: Might want to go.
- 34:50Speaker 1: New York, they'll love him here because I've been telling
- 34:55Speaker 1: people this, that at some point people in this city
- 34:57Speaker 1: were going to realize they didn't like Carl.
- 34:59Speaker 2: Towns' game.
- 35:02Speaker 3: Took about what, 15 months?
- 35:04Speaker 1: A year and a half.
- 35:05Speaker 2: You live here with me. It has happened. Even with
- 35:08Speaker 2: the missed.
- 35:08Speaker 1: Free throws, they'll love Giannis' game.
- 35:10Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 35:11Speaker 1: Giannis plays hard. Giannis plays tough. Giannis is not afraid
- 35:14Speaker 1: of being embarrassed. Right?
- 35:16Speaker 2: Like all of those things.
- 35:18Speaker 1: And if you put him there with, say, Jalen Bruncie,
- 35:20Speaker 1: you got somebody to take the big shots so you
- 35:22Speaker 1: don't have to worry about the free throw.
- 35:24Speaker 4: Right.
- 35:24Speaker 2: Situation.
- 35:24Speaker 1: Like you've got the parts that are there. I think,
- 35:28Speaker 1: and I've said on this show many times, that I
- 35:30Speaker 1: think for a lot of these guys, the game down
- 35:31Speaker 1: the line is just going to be stay where you are.
- 35:35Speaker 3: Right.
- 35:36Speaker 1: You know what I mean? Just stay where you are
- 35:38Speaker 1: because of it's so hard to do anything with these
- 35:40Speaker 1: aprons and everything else.
- 35:42Speaker 2: You probably got you might as well.
- 35:44Speaker 1: The idea that you're going to go somewhere and now
- 35:46Speaker 1: you'll be a champion in a couple of years is
- 35:48Speaker 1: going to be impossible for you again.
- 35:50Speaker 4: Right.
- 35:50Speaker 1: You might be better off just staying where you are.
- 35:53Speaker 1: But there are no the oh, my God, it's so hard, man.
- 35:56Speaker 1: Don't nobody want to hear that shit, man. Either I'm
- 35:58Speaker 1: staying or I need to go. But you can't... Because
- 36:03Speaker 1: didn't he be hitting us with the, I don't know
- 36:04Speaker 1: where all these rumors are coming from? Yes, you do.
- 36:08Speaker 1: That's the one that people don't want to hear. I
- 36:11Speaker 1: don't understand why people keep... Yes, you do, right? Carmelo
- 36:17Speaker 1: is a great example. He got ugly at the end
- 36:19Speaker 1: with Denver. And I've said this many times, the fact
- 36:22Speaker 1: that Denver gave his number away is the pettiest thing
- 36:25Speaker 1: in the world. They did it, but they did it
- 36:27Speaker 1: multiple times. It's ridiculous that they did that.
- 36:30Speaker 2: But Melo... never acted like he didn't want to leave.
- 36:35Speaker 2: He never did.
- 36:37Speaker 1: And I think that part in the moment bothered people,
- 36:40Speaker 1: but I think you have to look back on it
- 36:41Speaker 1: like it was actually fairly admirable.
- 36:43Speaker 2: Like, look, man, this is the thing I want to
- 36:46Speaker 2: do right now. I also want to get all my money.
- 36:48Speaker 4: Right.
- 36:49Speaker 3: Also admirable.
- 36:50Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah. I also want to get all my money, which, again,
- 36:53Speaker 1: that was the issue, is that he wanted to get
- 36:55Speaker 1: all his money and make the move. Denver got a
- 36:57Speaker 1: great trade package for him, too. But if you want
- 37:00Speaker 1: to go, go. We may not get it at first,
- 37:04Speaker 1: but we're grown. We've been doing this for a while.
- 37:08Speaker 1: If you want to go, go. But you don't want
- 37:11Speaker 1: people saying you a phony. And that's what we're going
- 37:14Speaker 1: to say based on the way that he has acted.
- 37:18Speaker 1: And eventually people will get over it, but you got
- 37:21Speaker 1: nobody to blame for it but himself. It's the last
- 37:29Speaker 1: call for football on FanDuel. One final Sunday, one last kickoff,

- 39:03Speaker 3: All right, both some more stories from the weekend. Speaking
- 39:05Speaker 3: of NFL owners and malfeasance, a giant's code or Steve
- 39:09Speaker 3: Tish has been named in the latest Epstein files. His
- 39:12Speaker 3: name appears at least 440 times in the latest documents.
- 39:17Speaker 3: Released co-owner and vice president of the Giants. Ironically, also
- 39:22Speaker 3: produced a film called Risky Business, which is about underage
- 39:27Speaker 3: people looking for sex. Beau, what was your reaction to that? news?
- 39:30Speaker 2: Okay, so the Epstein files are media gold.
- 39:37Speaker 1: And the reason that I say media gold is that
- 39:40Speaker 1: everybody's in them. Like no matter what kind of website
- 39:44Speaker 1: you got, You have something that you can attach to
- 39:47Speaker 1: the Epstein files, and then boom, it.
- 39:50Speaker 2: Gets posted, right? Pusha T got his name tied up.
- 39:55Speaker 2: How does Pusha T know him?
- 39:59Speaker 4: Right.
- 40:01Speaker 3: In what world do Pusha T and Mr. Epstein... Yeah, yeah.
- 40:04Speaker 1: Like, what is this? So, like, we got Jay-Z there. Like,
- 40:07Speaker 1: the rappers get involved in this. Bill Gates, who... ooh,
- 40:12Speaker 1: it's a good thing he's already divorced.
- 40:14Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 40:14Speaker 2: Because otherwise it would be a wrap.
- 40:16Speaker 3: Owners in multiple leagues?
- 40:18Speaker 2: Yes.
- 40:18Speaker 3: Including ones that aren't here?
- 40:21Speaker 2: All over the place.
- 40:23Speaker 1: Everybody's name is tied in this in some form or fashion. Now,
- 40:26Speaker 1: part of what's interesting about this is, though, is that Tish,
- 40:29Speaker 1: who is the co-owner of the Giants, I can't explain
- 40:32Speaker 1: to y'all, if you are not in New York, how
- 40:33Speaker 1: rich Tish is, right? Like the Tish name is. What
- 40:38Speaker 1: that means. Like Ryan was like, what's the first thing
- 40:39Speaker 1: you think about with Tish? And I had three. I
- 40:42Speaker 1: got his first one, which is his name is all
- 40:43Speaker 1: over NYU stuff, right? Hospitals and the likes. What is that?
- 40:47Speaker 1: A niece or a granddaughter or something? That's the police commissioner.
- 40:51Speaker 1: I can't tell which. Then there was another thing that
- 40:54Speaker 1: we had.
- 40:55Speaker 3: The Met.
- 40:55Speaker 2: The Met. You go to the Met, you'll see the
- 40:58Speaker 2: Tish name all over the walls.
- 41:00Speaker 1: Like these guys, what can Roger Goodell do or any
- 41:05Speaker 1: of these people do?
- 41:06Speaker 2: Because- Tish's name is in the emails.
- 41:10Speaker 1: The guys that are in bad shape in the emails
- 41:13Speaker 1: are the guys in the emails after Epstein had already
- 41:17Speaker 1: been busted for.
- 41:20Speaker 2: Putting girls on the stroll. And you still emailing him
- 41:24Speaker 2: about girls, right?
- 41:26Speaker 1: Like, are they treating that like he had a local
- 41:28Speaker 1: bodega and they caught him up selling cigarettes from Virginia?
- 41:32Speaker 2: And you're like, oh yeah, but I pay full price.
- 41:36Speaker 4: Right?
- 41:37Speaker 1: Like, is that the explanation or the justification that you
- 41:40Speaker 1: have for still dealing? Because I was like, after you
- 41:43Speaker 1: get caught with that, partner, we can't. I got partners
- 41:46Speaker 1: I done had to cut off for less than that.
- 41:49Speaker 4: Right?
- 41:49Speaker 1: Like, hey, hey, hey, hey, we can't do that. But
- 41:51Speaker 1: y'all still go.
- 41:52Speaker 2: To this man to get girls. Like that is what
- 41:55Speaker 2: these reports are saying.
- 41:56Speaker 1: And you are tied up in this just like all
- 41:59Speaker 1: these other people are tied up in this. And I
- 42:02Speaker 1: don't know ultimately what's going to happen.
- 42:04Speaker 2: With any of these guys.
- 42:05Speaker 1: I don't think there's any like legal consequences that are
- 42:08Speaker 1: going to come down to it. And I also think
- 42:10Speaker 1: that it's going to be so many people who get
- 42:12Speaker 1: caught up in it and their names get out there
- 42:15Speaker 1: that we're not going to really be able to remember
- 42:17Speaker 1: because there's nobody's going to have the time to.
- 42:19Speaker 2: Do the follow-ups about those things, right?
- 42:23Speaker 1: It's just going to be embarrassing and shameful in part
- 42:27Speaker 1: because most journalistic entities don't even have the ability to
- 42:30Speaker 1: like dig deeper to find out what's really going on
- 42:34Speaker 1: with a lot of them.
- 42:36Speaker 3: Right. And we, we have not said the name of the,
- 42:39Speaker 3: we talked about all these people when we have not
- 42:41Speaker 3: said the president and the richest person in the world.
- 42:43Speaker 3: That is true.
- 42:44Speaker 1: That is true. They are there. Right. But let me
- 42:47Speaker 1: hit you with a, however, this is a very important
- 42:49Speaker 1: thing for all these guys. Because everybody wants there to
- 42:52Speaker 1: be some punishment, right? Everybody wants something to happen to
- 42:56Speaker 1: these dudes. And I don't think anything is going to
- 43:00Speaker 1: get anybody put in jail or anything like that. But
- 43:03Speaker 1: there's a different kind of jail that you can go to.
- 43:06Speaker 1: It's not the one with the bars and the jumpsuits
- 43:10Speaker 1: and the terrible food. It's the one that can be
- 43:13Speaker 1: your home. That can be your home when your wife
- 43:17Speaker 1: reads that you've been emailing this dude. about hollering at girls.
- 43:24Speaker 1: All these dudes have had to go home to explain
- 43:28Speaker 1: how it is that they got caught up in this.
- 43:33Speaker 1: Every single one of them has had to do that.
- 43:36Speaker 1: And it ain't going good for not a single one
- 43:43Speaker 1: of them. The only guy that seems to have a
- 43:46Speaker 1: good explanation is Russell Wilson. Hey, man, I was just
- 43:49Speaker 1: trying to buy a plane.
- 43:52Speaker 2: I ain't even know. I ain't never met that.
- 43:54Speaker 1: Hell, no, no, no, no, no. Russ got out in
- 43:57Speaker 1: front of that. Russ was like, hey, baby, I was
- 43:59Speaker 1: just trying to buy a plane. Yeah, that man ain't
- 44:00Speaker 1: trying to mess with me.
- 44:02Speaker 3: Trying to buy you a plane.
- 44:03Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly, yeah.
- 44:06Speaker 2: It was supposed to be a surprise.
- 44:12Speaker 3: All right, speaking of things in free fall, Bitcoin has...
- 44:15Speaker 3: really tanked in the last week. The digital coin has
- 44:17Speaker 3: fallen about 12% in the last seven days, wiping off
- 44:20Speaker 3: about $ 200 billion in value, now under $ 80, 000. Bo, what
- 44:26Speaker 3: was your reaction to this news?
- 44:28Speaker 1: Look, man, I don't even really think about funny money
- 44:30Speaker 1: no more. Like, I forgot that after, you remember the
- 44:33Speaker 1: year old funny money?
- 44:34Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 44:35Speaker 1: 2022, that was the year, that was when funny money
- 44:38Speaker 1: really had its time. The funny money Super Bowl, fortune
- 44:42Speaker 1: favors the brave. and everything else. But the truth is,
- 44:47Speaker 1: people were still going about their funny money. It just
- 44:49Speaker 1: stopped being like a fad. Remember NFTs?
- 44:54Speaker 3: I do remember NFTs.
- 44:55Speaker 1: I watched a documentary on Netflix the other day about
- 44:58Speaker 1: like the run on NFTs. We were bored. Like 2021, man,
- 45:03Speaker 1: people were bored and they just thought it was going
- 45:05Speaker 1: to hit for a lick, right? The thing with the
- 45:08Speaker 1: Bitcoin stuff always is, man, it'll have another jump up.
- 45:11Speaker 1: It'll have another drop. But my issue with funny money
- 45:15Speaker 1: has always been no one can really explain the determinants
- 45:18Speaker 1: of price. What's going to make these things go? And
- 45:22Speaker 1: it is a cult of people who just decide that
- 45:24Speaker 1: once they do it, they're going to get on it.
- 45:25Speaker 1: They're going to stay on it. It's never going to stop.
- 45:28Speaker 1: That's the ride they are on. And so I don't
- 45:31Speaker 1: even really think that much about it no more when
- 45:33Speaker 1: people get caught up in funny money.
- 45:34Speaker 2: Y'all decided to do this.
- 45:35Speaker 1: Now, if you knew and just woke up and was like,
- 45:37Speaker 1: I think I'm going to get on this Bitcoin thing.
- 45:39Speaker 2: You deserve everything you get. The rest of y'all? Hey, man,
- 45:42Speaker 2: this is the ride you chose to sign up for.
- 45:44Speaker 2: I hope you have a good time.
- 45:46Speaker 1: All right.
- 45:46Speaker 3: And finally, the Grammys were last night. Kendrick Lamar became
- 45:50Speaker 3: the most decorated rapper in the history of the Grammys.
- 45:54Speaker 3: Bad Bunny had some comments, you know, condemning Ice. Lauryn
- 45:59Speaker 3: Hill showed up. What was your biggest surprise.
- 46:02Speaker 4: From the night?
- 46:06Speaker 1: Lauryn Hill. What time did they tell her to show up?
- 46:10Speaker 1: Because it appears that she was on time. Did they
- 46:14Speaker 1: tell her the show was the night before? Or did
- 46:17Speaker 1: they tell her that they needed to do a sound
- 46:18Speaker 1: check at 11 in the morning and then you just
- 46:20Speaker 1: kept coming up.
- 46:21Speaker 2: With reasons for her not to leave?
- 46:24Speaker 1: There's no way in the world that I personally would
- 46:27Speaker 1: be doing a live television show and book Lauryn Hill
- 46:29Speaker 1: to do it. There's no chance.
- 46:32Speaker 3: I'm stressed out just thinking about it.
- 46:34Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, the chakras and the shit ain't in line,
- 46:36Speaker 2: so she ain't coming to work. You can never pay
- 46:38Speaker 2: me enough to set her up there.
- 46:40Speaker 1: The tribute was actually very good, and I appreciated the
- 46:43Speaker 1: fact that I didn't think they got too locked in
- 46:47Speaker 1: on how big the names were. They had a lot
- 46:51Speaker 1: of people that I'm aware of, but I don't think
- 46:53Speaker 1: are giant stars. Bringing Layla Hathaway in to sing a
- 46:56Speaker 1: daddy's part, I thought was a good thing. But the
- 46:58Speaker 1: biggest surprise to me is that Wyclef pulled up. I
- 47:01Speaker 1: suppose I remember that Roz couldn't show up because he's
- 47:04Speaker 1: been sentenced to 14 years in the Bing. But Wyclef
- 47:08Speaker 1: showing up, I didn't know them two could still be
- 47:10Speaker 1: in the same room. I thought that was very nice
- 47:12Speaker 1: of her to come because he served no purpose in that.
- 47:15Speaker 2: We didn't need him for anything. on that performance.
- 47:19Speaker 1: But I thought they got it, right? I thought they
- 47:23Speaker 1: did a very good job of it, and I appreciated
- 47:26Speaker 1: that they gave D'Angelo a full 11-minute tribute there, right?
- 47:33Speaker 1: That's what you give to the stars of a real
- 47:36Speaker 1: particular magnitude. They gave it to him. I thought that
- 47:39Speaker 1: was cool. I thought the Kendrick Lamar thing, where it
- 47:42Speaker 1: turns out now he has more Grammys than any rapper ever,
- 47:47Speaker 1: and I don't remember the exact Drake line because I
- 47:50Speaker 1: don't be memorizing Drake lines, but basically he talked about
- 47:53Speaker 1: all Kendrick got to do is cough and y'all.
- 47:55Speaker 2: Give him a Grammy.
- 48:00Speaker 1: Can't say that the dude was wrong.
- 48:02Speaker 2: He has a bit of a point.
- 48:04Speaker 1: Kendrick Lamar has 27 Grammys. What?
- 48:08Speaker 2: What are we talking about?
- 48:09Speaker 1: Like, I don't take the Grammys seriously, personally, right?
- 48:13Speaker 2: Particularly not when it comes to rap, but 27, dog.
- 48:16Speaker 1: 27.
- 48:19Speaker 3: Okay.
- 48:21Speaker 1: Cool.
- 48:21Speaker 5: Right.
- 48:22Speaker 1: Got you. And look, y'all all know I ain't really
- 48:25Speaker 1: out here trying to be out here saying Drake was right.
- 48:29Speaker 1: But on that one, he wasn't wrong. And then Bad Bunny,
- 48:32Speaker 1: who basically gave Ice the middle finger without saying it
- 48:35Speaker 1: up there, it's about to be a very interesting week
- 48:39Speaker 1: for Bad Bunny out here. Had other people come up
- 48:43Speaker 1: with their halftime show yet?
- 48:44Speaker 3: I believe they're keeping it a secret.
- 48:49Speaker 1: A secret, you say?
- 48:50Speaker 3: Yes. Okay.
- 48:56Speaker 1: You know who I actually think was the biggest loser
- 48:58Speaker 1: in all of this?
- 48:59Speaker 2: That dude, Jelly Roll. They hit Jelly Roll.
- 49:03Speaker 1: They tried to get Jelly Roll on the red carpet
- 49:05Speaker 1: to say something about ICE, and Jelly Roll said he
- 49:07Speaker 1: ain't know nothing about no politics. He's like, I'm from
- 49:10Speaker 1: a drug-addicted, you know, dumb redneck from a drug addict home.
- 49:15Speaker 1: We don't know anything about politics. Partner, you don't live
- 49:17Speaker 1: there no more. You don't live there no more. They
- 49:20Speaker 1: asking you about what ICE is doing up there in Minnesota,
- 49:23Speaker 1: which by the way, is also not politics.
- 49:26Speaker 4: Right.
- 49:26Speaker 3: Right.
- 49:27Speaker 2: Like that's a pretty clear yes and no.
- 49:29Speaker 1: And all the talk you got about Jesus and the
- 49:31Speaker 1: Bible and everything else. And in that moment, you ain't
- 49:34Speaker 1: trying to talk about politics. And it's just like, it's
- 49:36Speaker 1: a bummer, man. We all pick and choose. I got
- 49:39Speaker 1: things I don't feel like talking about in front of people, right?
- 49:42Speaker 1: But Jelly Roll's thing is interesting because at once he's
- 49:45Speaker 1: the dude with a bunch of tattoos on his face,
- 49:48Speaker 1: but also that part of the world that supports that,
- 49:51Speaker 1: that's a lot of his money. Didn't Jelly Roll used
- 49:55Speaker 1: to be like on three, six mafia joints?
- 49:59Speaker 2: But his money is over there.
- 50:04Speaker 1: Right? Like, his money is with these people who roll
- 50:08Speaker 1: with that other stuff.
- 50:12Speaker 2: I just thought you was about Jesus, partner.
- 50:17Speaker 3: All right, Bo. Another great day of voicemails. We got
- 50:24Speaker 3: a few good ones. Here's the first.
- 50:26Speaker 4: Hey, hey, what's up, Bo? John from L.A.
- 50:28Speaker 7: This isn't so much an apology as it is an
- 50:31Speaker 7: acknowledgement because I did doubt you, man. I thought you
- 50:34Speaker 7: kind of being hard on the brothers in Dallas with
- 50:37Speaker 7: them being herbs and everything. And recently I had an
- 50:40Speaker 7: opportunity to work with a young man from Houston and
- 50:43Speaker 7: tell him about the show and what you were saying
- 50:45Speaker 7: and talking about the shags.
- 50:48Speaker 4: And he said, yeah, man, it's true.
- 50:51Speaker 5: I said, what?
- 50:52Speaker 7: He said, yeah, man, they wear shags in Dallas.
- 50:55Speaker 3: I said, come on, man.
- 50:56Speaker 4: He said, dude.
- 50:57Speaker 7: They'd be running from the barber. In the middle of
- 51:00Speaker 7: the haircut, they'd just get up and run from the
- 51:03Speaker 7: barber because that's all that can explain the shag.
- 51:05Speaker 3: All right, man.
- 51:07Speaker 4: Yes, you were right.
- 51:10Speaker 1: No, actually, you do owe me an apology because you
- 51:13Speaker 1: were saying that as though you thought I was lying.
- 51:17Speaker 1: I told you they wear shags. And then somebody else
- 51:20Speaker 1: said it, and you were like, oh, okay, now it's true?
- 51:23Speaker 1: Why would I lie to you about the fact that
- 51:24Speaker 1: they was wearing shags? They call it a booty fade,
- 51:27Speaker 1: as if that's any better.
- 51:29Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, them.
- 51:31Speaker 1: Boys wear shags. It's crazy, right? They still do. And
- 51:36Speaker 1: that one boy, he's still the one that played for
- 51:37Speaker 1: the Thunder. I think he finally got rid of his shag,
- 51:40Speaker 1: but he had been gone from Dallas for a long-ass time,
- 51:42Speaker 1: still out there wearing the shag.
- 51:43Speaker 2: I think I told you about this. I got a
- 51:44Speaker 2: partner in Cali. He's a great barber. He's also an actuary,
- 51:48Speaker 2: so I don't think he's really barbering anymore.
- 51:50Speaker 1: But he used to work at a shop in Rialto,
- 51:51Speaker 1: and he said an old hair used to come in
- 51:53Speaker 1: there and ask him for a shag, and he would
- 51:54Speaker 1: refuse to give it to him until he finally told him,
- 51:57Speaker 1: I'll give you this shag, but you can't tell nobody
- 51:58Speaker 1: you've been coming over here getting no shag, man. That's
- 52:00Speaker 1: bad for business. He was like, it was a dope-ass shag, too.
- 52:03Speaker 1: But he was just like, you just can't be in
- 52:04Speaker 1: here telling people that I'm out here giving shags. You
- 52:08Speaker 1: just can't do it.
- 52:09Speaker 3: Bad for business.
- 52:10Speaker 1: Yeah, and the whole city of Dallas is like, get
- 52:11Speaker 1: your shag! Shags!
- 52:13Speaker 4: Shags!
- 52:14Speaker 1: Two-for-one shags!
- 52:17Speaker 3: All right, here's our next one.
- 52:19Speaker 5: Hey, Beaumonti. This is Matt, Northern Kentucky, right outside of Cincinnati.
- 52:27Speaker 5: So I'm at Ace Hardware today, and for the first
- 52:30Speaker 5: time in my life, I came across a white Xavier.
- 52:34Speaker 5: I had never, ever met a white Xavier before. And
- 52:38Speaker 5: the only thing I know about this man, who is
- 52:41Speaker 5: a Gen Z guy, the only thing I know about
- 52:44Speaker 5: him after this interaction is he is no receiver. I
- 52:48Speaker 5: watched this man fumble my return, my baseball cards, and
- 52:51Speaker 5: my chocolate bar before tripping over the trash can behind
- 52:55Speaker 5: him on the way to put something back on the shelf.
- 53:00Speaker 5: White Xavier needs to find a new position, man.
- 53:03Speaker 3: Big fan of the show. Take it easy.
- 53:07Speaker 1: Okay. First of all, I would like to start with
- 53:09Speaker 1: the fact that my man went to Ace Hardware to
- 53:10Speaker 1: buy some baseball cards.
- 53:12Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 53:14Speaker 2: Ace Hardware is.
- 53:15Speaker 3: I didn't realize it's the 1920s.
- 53:17Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 53:17Speaker 2: It's slowly approaching the Radio Shack zone.
- 53:19Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 53:20Speaker 1: Wow.
- 53:20Speaker 2: Still in the league, huh?
- 53:22Speaker 1: Boy, I'll tell you this, though. I still have times
- 53:24Speaker 1: where a nice Radio Shack come in handy.
- 53:26Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 53:26Speaker 3: Sometimes you need that cord.
- 53:27Speaker 1: Just need to run in and get a cord. Right.
- 53:29Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 53:31Speaker 1: Number two, what makes the idea that there are no
- 53:33Speaker 1: more white Xaviers interesting is that Xavier is like a
- 53:35Speaker 1: very Catholic name, right? Right. It's saints and stuff like that.
- 53:39Speaker 1: When did they decide to let us have Xavier?
- 53:42Speaker 2: They're like, no, y'all got that.
- 53:44Speaker 1: Cool. No, no, no. We don't even need a partner.
- 53:46Speaker 1: You go ahead and take that. Like, what did it
- 53:47Speaker 1: take for them to give up Xavier? Or did they
- 53:50Speaker 1: just get so frustrated to hear enough say Xavier? They
- 53:52Speaker 1: were like, fuck it, man. It don't even fit no more.
- 53:55Speaker 1: You got it.
- 53:56Speaker 4: All right.
- 53:57Speaker 3: Here's the next one. And similar theme.
- 53:59Speaker 6: Hey, Balmani. Hey, Ryan. I just wanted to call and
- 54:02Speaker 6: add another name to the recent voicemail trend of names
- 54:06Speaker 6: such as the White Reggie or the White Galen. For
- 54:10Speaker 6: your consideration, the White Lamont recently was in Wisconsin, a
- 54:16Speaker 6: rural part of Wisconsin, I should note. And there is
- 54:19Speaker 6: an elected official in that county. An older man looks
- 54:23Speaker 6: like he's in his 70s. White man named Lamont. Do
- 54:27Speaker 6: with this what you will.
- 54:30Speaker 2: Yo, so this is the thing that people don't get, man.
- 54:33Speaker 1: The country whites love a la name. They don't so
- 54:38Speaker 1: much care about the D names and they don't add
- 54:41Speaker 1: apostrophes and they don't necessarily capitalize immediately after the la.
- 54:46Speaker 2: But it's a lot of white ladies named LaDonna, stuff
- 54:50Speaker 2: like that. They do that. But Lamont, another one that
- 54:54Speaker 2: I felt like they let us have.
- 54:56Speaker 1: Now, you know, Italy got that dude Lamont that won
- 55:00Speaker 1: the 100 meters, but he's still black.
- 55:02Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying? But you remember, I don't know,
- 55:03Speaker 2: there used to be a baseball manager named Gene Lamont.
- 55:07Speaker 1: He was white. So yeah, by the way, speaking of which,
- 55:10Speaker 1: rest in peace to Lamont Sanford. DeMond Wilson died over
- 55:13Speaker 1: the weekend, right? And he was a very black Lamont.
- 55:17Speaker 1: But I feel like this voicemail was in the spirit
- 55:20Speaker 1: of Lamonts of all sorts. What do you think would
- 55:23Speaker 1: happen if he said it was a real white man
- 55:25Speaker 1: that was involved in the city government up there? What
- 55:27Speaker 1: if I went to one of their city council meetings
- 55:29Speaker 1: and I screamed out, you big dummy! You think he'd
- 55:31Speaker 1: get it?
- 55:33Speaker 3: I mean, that show was very, like, 15 million people
- 55:36Speaker 3: used to watch that show.
- 55:38Speaker 1: Yo, the thing about Sanford and Son with Lamont for
- 55:41Speaker 1: me always is, there was nothing cool about Lamont, man.
- 55:46Speaker 2: All we knew was that his dad called him a
- 55:48Speaker 2: dummy all the time.
- 55:50Speaker 1: That's all we knew was his dad called him a
- 55:52Speaker 1: big dummy at every turn. Me and Shannon used to
- 55:54Speaker 1: have the big dummy of the week on the radio show.
- 55:56Speaker 3: That's a good bit.
- 55:57Speaker 1: Oh, it was great every week. We'd have it every week.
- 56:00Speaker 7: All right.
- 56:01Speaker 3: Here's our last one. You know, staying in theme with
- 56:03Speaker 3: the Super Bowl. Hey, what's up, Bo?
- 56:05Speaker 4: What's up, Ryan? This is CB from Brooklyn. I have
- 56:09Speaker 4: to tell the story about learning about little ginger cuz
- 56:14Speaker 4: at my son's school. So my son goes to a
- 56:18Speaker 4: lovely public school here in Bed-Stuy and he was invited
- 56:22Speaker 4: to join the basketball team. And I got to ask
- 56:24Speaker 4: to help coach. So I decided, all right, I'm going
- 56:27Speaker 4: to do this, do this, all that. And I had
- 56:31Speaker 4: seen this young man earlier in the school year, and
- 56:34Speaker 4: it was a little white boy, super-duper ginger. He pulls
- 56:37Speaker 4: up to school, first day of school, with some extra
- 56:40Speaker 4: clean A1s, the Asia Wilson signature shoe. And I was like,
- 56:46Speaker 4: all right, that is a choice that his parents made
- 56:49Speaker 4: because they are not cheap. And they're very distinctive. So
- 56:53Speaker 4: I pull up to basketball practice. Ginger Cud's on the team.
- 56:55Speaker 4: All right, cool. Let me see what's good with Ginger Cud's.
- 56:59Speaker 4: He can hoop a little bit. He's one of the
- 57:01Speaker 4: older kids. This is a third through fifth grade team.
- 57:04Speaker 4: We get to the end of practice, and the coach
- 57:08Speaker 4: asks for player voices. And Ginger Cud's one of the
- 57:11Speaker 4: leaders on the team because he was on the team
- 57:13Speaker 4: last year. And he kicks it to Ginger Cud's, mind you,
- 57:17Speaker 4: I know who his mom is. His mom is on
- 57:19Speaker 4: the PTA. And this isn't spicy white. This is regular,
- 57:23Speaker 4: degular Brooklyn, lives in a nice spot, white. And Ginger
- 57:28Speaker 4: Cuz goes, yeah, you know, y'all did great today. Everybody
- 57:34Speaker 4: gave their maximum effort. You know, everything was real good.
- 57:38Speaker 4: I'm real proud of where this team is going. And
- 57:40Speaker 4: that dialect. And I was like, wow. Little Ginger Cuz.
- 57:48Speaker 4: it is very clear that that young man has been
- 57:50Speaker 4: the only white kid in his class.
- 57:53Speaker 3: For a while.
- 57:55Speaker 4: And I am very excited to see where this season
- 57:59Speaker 4: goes with little ginger cuz as one of our team captains.
- 58:05Speaker 4: Thank you. Have a good one, Bo. Have a good one, Ryan.
- 58:09Speaker 1: Man, the white people that go to, that send their
- 58:11Speaker 1: kids to public schools with the black people, right?
- 58:14Speaker 3: Damn, it gentrified all of Bed-Stuy.
- 58:16Speaker 1: Yeah, special place in heaven for those folks, man. It really,
- 58:19Speaker 1: really is because you really got to do that. And
- 58:21Speaker 1: quite honestly, I don't always know if I recommend that
- 58:25Speaker 1: you do it. But what I would pay to hear
- 58:27Speaker 1: from those people is like, Ryan, you don't have to
- 58:31Speaker 1: verify this if you don't want to, but I think
- 58:32Speaker 1: that you'll agree that one thing that I would find
- 58:35Speaker 1: interesting if I were a white person is when black
- 58:38Speaker 1: people who spend a lot of time around white people
- 58:41Speaker 1: tell you what the things are that white people do
- 58:43Speaker 1: that are funny. that it's like, huh, you know, hadn't
- 58:46Speaker 1: really thought of that. You know, it's just kind of
- 58:47Speaker 1: an average thing. Like, Black comedians give you all kinds
- 58:51Speaker 1: of access and insights into such things, right? We don't
- 58:55Speaker 1: talk nearly enough about the things that white people who
- 58:59Speaker 1: spend all their time around Black people have the good
- 59:02Speaker 1: fortune of noticing and thereby sharing. I would love to
- 59:05Speaker 1: get to Jijica's when he's like 19 and he'll be like, yo,
- 59:08Speaker 1: so here's this thing about black people. And they'd be like,
- 59:10Speaker 1: what you mean? And then he starts talking and be like, yeah,
- 59:13Speaker 1: he's got a point.
- 59:15Speaker 3: I'll plead the fifth there.
- 59:17Speaker 1: Hey, look, man, humans are humans.
- 59:18Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying? We've all got things.
- 59:21Speaker 1: You guys know we got some things. It's okay. But
- 59:24Speaker 1: also you're playing this the right way. Ladies and gentlemen,
- 59:28Speaker 1: thanks so much for joining us here on The Right Time.
- 59:30Speaker 1: We do this four times a week. Ryan Bellamy handles
- 59:33Speaker 1: everything behind the scenes. Thank you, sir. Hit the voicemail line, 323-596-7767.
- 59:39Speaker 1: By the way, tomorrow we begin our series on... No,
- 59:43Speaker 1: tomorrow we don't. Tomorrow's just a different Time Machine Tuesday.
- 59:46Speaker 1: My fault. The week after we begin our series on
- 59:48Speaker 1: the year 1996 in a wrap. That's going to be
- 59:50Speaker 1: a six-week series, by the way, so look out for that. Remember,
- 59:54Speaker 1: follow the right time. Subscribe, like, rate us, review us,
- 59:57Speaker 1: give us five stars, and do those things, please. Help
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: us out. You only give us four stars. I'm inclined
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: to believe that you're not a person who's trying to help,
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: you hater. Take it easy.
