- 0:00Speaker 1: Game on. I mean, I don't have to lose with that.
- 0:06Speaker 2: Welcome to another episode of Busting with the Boys. First question, coach,
- 0:13Speaker 2: what game? What game was there? If we die, we
- 0:16Speaker 2: die speech?
- 0:19Speaker 1: That was that was Illinois, I believe, Yeah, waiting to
- 0:28Speaker 1: ask you that. No, No, it wasn't Michigan.
- 0:30Speaker 2: That was Michigan. Does your players seem to think it
- 0:34Speaker 2: was Michigan?
- 0:36Speaker 1: You have to show it to me.
- 0:38Speaker 3: What y'all saying? What y'all saying that there that dies,
- 0:42Speaker 3: that die?
- 0:43Speaker 1: Is that not you?
- 0:44Speaker 2: No?
- 0:44Speaker 1: Is that not you? Yeah? Yeah, illis Yeah.
- 0:47Speaker 3: Oh, we're bringing the banger. If we died, we.
- 0:49Speaker 1: Died there, if we would have lost the game, I
- 0:53Speaker 1: would have died. No, yeah, yeah, strategic yeah, Michigan, Michigan.
- 1:00Speaker 1: Michigan probably was more like the halftime speech. And then
- 1:04Speaker 1: the next day the next day we went out. Next
- 1:06Speaker 1: day we went out and said, all right, you a
- 1:08Speaker 1: don't want to play on Saturdays and we'll play on Sundays. Now,
- 1:09Speaker 1: that's before we knew they had our signal. I'm not
- 1:12Speaker 1: saying that's why we lost, but like before we knew
- 1:13Speaker 1: all the kind of controversy around the games man, we
- 1:16Speaker 1: went out there Sunday night. We had a Friday game
- 1:18Speaker 1: Sunday night. There's my boy Jay led over there. He's
- 1:21Speaker 1: got he's got like canned footage of like I mean,
- 1:23Speaker 1: it was I'm talking about how long? How long we
- 1:26Speaker 1: go for an hour and a half, like full play,
- 1:29Speaker 1: like guys out there defense talking trash of the offense,
- 1:32Speaker 1: like like literally twenty four hours after we just played Michigan,
- 1:36Speaker 1: and and I said, if you don't want to play
- 1:38Speaker 1: on Saturdays, you know, we get down, We're gonna just
- 1:40Speaker 1: kind of roll over. Then we'll play on Sundays. And
- 1:42Speaker 1: we played, and then we went Friday night to Illinois
- 1:44Speaker 1: and we beat Illinois. Yeah, so what.
- 1:46Speaker 3: Did the players know that they were going to practice
- 1:49Speaker 3: on a Sunday.
- 1:49Speaker 1: Oh, the coaches didn't know.
- 1:50Speaker 3: No one knew, No one knew.
- 1:51Speaker 1: No. I literally spent the whole day kind of going
- 1:53Speaker 1: back because you know, you don't want to overreact, right,
- 1:56Speaker 1: But we had had the Colorado game. The Colorado game
- 2:00Speaker 1: was our second game of the year, tough loss, first
- 2:02Speaker 1: game against Minnesota, the second game of the year thirteen seven,
- 2:06Speaker 1: with like seven minutes left and we lose thirty six.
- 2:08Speaker 1: Thirteen kind of got away from this and I'm like,
- 2:10Speaker 1: all right, I'm trying to teach them come back. We
- 2:12Speaker 1: beaten Nord Illinois, beat LA Tech, playing Michigan, get down
- 2:17Speaker 1: twenty eight to nothing, and it's like, ah, darn it,
- 2:20Speaker 1: and just I'm not here to have guys.
- 2:22Speaker 3: Know.
- 2:22Speaker 1: I love these guys too much to let them say
- 2:24Speaker 1: all darn it. So I went back and forth all
- 2:26Speaker 1: day and then finally I was like, what would you
- 2:28Speaker 1: have done back at Temple before all the before all
- 2:31Speaker 1: the stuff right before you know, everyone's watching what you're
- 2:33Speaker 1: doing back at Temple and we had the Hassan Reddick's
- 2:36Speaker 1: and the Dion Dawkins and all those like real dudes.
- 2:39Speaker 1: I was like, what we've done back then, we'd have
- 2:41Speaker 1: gone out and practiced. And so we went out there
- 2:44Speaker 1: and what I saw was these guys come to life.
- 2:46Speaker 1: And that's why you know, we went out. We beat Illinois,
- 2:48Speaker 1: we beat Northwestern, we beat Purdue. We went a little
- 2:51Speaker 1: three game three or four game win streak, three game
- 2:53Speaker 1: win streak, so we got some winners here. Just but
- 2:57Speaker 1: literally it was just like me and my heart back
- 2:59Speaker 1: and forth. What should I do? As a coach? You
- 3:01Speaker 1: have to get up there and present, like, you know
- 3:02Speaker 1: what you're doing. But sometimes you're like, man, I don't
- 3:04Speaker 1: know what to do right now, because you you don't
- 3:06Speaker 1: want someone to get hurt. You don't want do the
- 3:07Speaker 1: wrong thing, but you also want them to know that
- 3:10Speaker 1: you expect more from them other than just if we're
- 3:12Speaker 1: gonna lose, we're gonna lose, but we're not gonna We're
- 3:14Speaker 1: not gonna lay down.
- 3:15Speaker 2: Yeah, how was that? Throughout the year? Obviously you're not
- 3:19Speaker 2: feeling the expectation of Nebraska and the fan base and
- 3:22Speaker 2: everything else and falling short of like being bow eligible,
- 3:26Speaker 2: especially when you had a couple of games there at
- 3:27Speaker 2: the end to to do just that.
- 3:30Speaker 1: Yeah, we were five and three. You know, it's five
- 3:32Speaker 1: and three to finish five and seven, and it's like
- 3:35Speaker 1: anything else. Man, it's a double edged sword, right. My
- 3:38Speaker 1: heart really hurt for the for the older guys, right,
- 3:42Speaker 1: like they have been through so much and some of
- 3:44Speaker 1: them came back just to help us get to be
- 3:47Speaker 1: bow eligible, to be the team that brought us back.
- 3:49Speaker 1: I'm out. I'd walk down town students and say, coach,
- 3:52Speaker 1: I came back for another year because I want to
- 3:53Speaker 1: go to a Bowl game. Like so I felt that
- 3:56Speaker 1: not for me, not expectation even just how much the
- 3:58Speaker 1: players would put into it, and to lose twenty to seventeen,
- 4:02Speaker 1: and then to lose thirteen to ten, and then to
- 4:04Speaker 1: lose in overtime, and then to lose thirteen ten on
- 4:07Speaker 1: the last play to walk off field goals. My heart
- 4:11Speaker 1: hurt for those guys, cause I really really really appreciated
- 4:13Speaker 1: those guys. With that being said, sometimes you can go
- 4:18Speaker 1: six and six. You can go to a bowl game
- 4:20Speaker 1: and go play in a nice bowl game. Being a
- 4:22Speaker 1: team you should be finished seven and six. Everybody's walking
- 4:24Speaker 1: around smiling like we have like an intensity about us,
- 4:28Speaker 1: We have an urgency about us that we might not
- 4:32Speaker 1: have had have we gone and gotten at both the
- 4:34Speaker 1: PlayStation from the bowl game, a nice little job and suit.
- 4:37Speaker 1: So I think there's some positives, but we didn't get
- 4:40Speaker 1: it done.
- 4:41Speaker 4: That shows, though, you can tell because y'all going five
- 4:44Speaker 4: and seven and still being one of the top, having
- 4:47Speaker 4: one of the top recruiting classes.
- 4:49Speaker 3: Talk a little bit about that.
- 4:51Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, I think, as you see this place,
- 4:53Speaker 1: like you know, and again, facilities don't what do facilities do?
- 4:57Speaker 1: They tell you that football is important here. Base tells
- 5:00Speaker 1: people that football is important here. And so we work
- 5:03Speaker 1: our tails off. We work hard in recruiting and just
- 5:07Speaker 1: to get people here because I think once you get here,
- 5:08Speaker 1: like you walk around Lincoln, you go downtown, you see
- 5:11Speaker 1: the campus, You're like, oh, snap, like this is a
- 5:12Speaker 1: really really cool place. And so you know, the highlights
- 5:18Speaker 1: came it just stay just turned on the highlights. That's
- 5:25Speaker 1: but you know what. But honestly, like I think the
- 5:27Speaker 1: big thing is all along players can see like, hey,
- 5:30Speaker 1: my history at Temple, you know, being two and ten,
- 5:33Speaker 1: then being six and six, and then back to back
- 5:36Speaker 1: you know, top twenty five teams, go back to back
- 5:38Speaker 1: conference champions, you know, top twenty five a different times
- 5:40Speaker 1: of the year, Uh, going to Baylor being one and eleven,
- 5:43Speaker 1: then being seven and six and playing in the Sugar Bowl.
- 5:45Speaker 1: I think people realize, hey, this is like a coach
- 5:47Speaker 1: will try to build it the right way, so to
- 5:49Speaker 1: be five and seven maybe outperformed. So I think a
- 5:52Speaker 1: lot of young players are like, all right, I see it.
- 5:54Speaker 1: I see what they're trying to do. I see how
- 5:56Speaker 1: they're doing it, and I think we're just gonna continue.
- 6:00Speaker 1: We're gonna continue to crew.
- 6:00Speaker 2: Well, what do you feel like you've learned the first
- 6:02Speaker 2: year coaching being the head coach at University of Nebraska.
- 6:05Speaker 1: That you know, when I took this job, I was
- 6:08Speaker 1: very uncertain, you know. I was very like, nah, you know,
- 6:11Speaker 1: you just get fired. You're a little scarred, you know,
- 6:13Speaker 1: and I don't really know. I'm a Northeast guy. I
- 6:15Speaker 1: was very uncertain, like, you know, not in a bad way,
- 6:17Speaker 1: just like in h And my wife was like, that's
- 6:19Speaker 1: the job. That's the job. Go to Nebraska. That's the job.
- 6:23Speaker 1: Go to Nebraska. So like two weeks in, you know,
- 6:25Speaker 1: cause I was living downtown, my family, my kids were
- 6:27Speaker 1: finishing school, I called her. I was like, as usual,
- 6:30Speaker 1: you were right, like this is a great place. Like
- 6:33Speaker 1: I didn't know how good the people were. I didn't know.
- 6:36Speaker 1: I mean, this is a place and you know this,
- 6:38Speaker 1: but this is a place where like sixteen minutes before
- 6:41Speaker 1: the game, everybody's in the stands watching warm ups like
- 6:43Speaker 1: they oh, they they loved the players so much that
- 6:46Speaker 1: they want to watch even the guys who aren't going
- 6:47Speaker 1: to play, they want to watch them warm up. This
- 6:48Speaker 1: is a place that like after the game winner lose,
- 6:52Speaker 1: is going to stand up and cheer for you probably
- 6:53Speaker 1: cheer for the opponent. So it's football done right. And
- 6:57Speaker 1: you know, I love the game of football and this
- 6:59Speaker 1: is a place that loves football. So it's like the
- 7:01Speaker 1: perfect match for me, perfect match for my family. And
- 7:04Speaker 1: I think that I think that we can be what
- 7:07Speaker 1: we're expecting to be.
- 7:08Speaker 4: Do you think that's what made your decision easier to
- 7:10Speaker 4: leave the NFL and they come back to Nebraska.
- 7:13Speaker 1: Well, they made the decision for me when they told
- 7:14Speaker 1: me to get my as your your key card will
- 7:22Speaker 1: not be working anymore.
- 7:24Speaker 2: No.
- 7:24Speaker 1: But but in all seriousness, you know, I had I
- 7:28Speaker 1: had a chance to go be an assistant coach in
- 7:30Speaker 1: the in the NFL, the New York Giants, and had
- 7:31Speaker 1: an amazing experience, you know, worked with the old line,
- 7:36Speaker 1: the guys like you know, Chris Snee, Dave Deal, David Boss,
- 7:39Speaker 1: like all these great dudes. And I was a young
- 7:41Speaker 1: assistant coach. Being a head coach in the NFL probably
- 7:43Speaker 1: was was it really for me? Like I love players,
- 7:46Speaker 1: and you're caught there sometimes in like you're the guy,
- 7:49Speaker 1: you're cutting guys. You're the guy, and some guys probably
- 7:52Speaker 1: can do it way better than me. Some guys, you know,
- 7:53Speaker 1: maybe like a Vrabele or someone who's played. I struggled
- 7:57Speaker 1: with coaching you, coaching you and then cutting you. I
- 8:00Speaker 1: you know, I struggled with my family not being a
- 8:02Speaker 1: part of it. Like last night, if you'd have been here,
- 8:04Speaker 1: the whole team. We have dinner in the hawks indoor
- 8:07Speaker 1: players tell them, invite their families, Invite their girlfriends. Coaches
- 8:09Speaker 1: invite everybody. You know, my daughters are walking around. My
- 8:12Speaker 1: wife knows, not just our players, their girlfriends, their families.
- 8:15Speaker 1: Like it's college and it's just a little bit more
- 8:17Speaker 1: how I'm wired. It's a little bit more relationship built.
- 8:19Speaker 1: So you know, when when when Carolina didn't work out,
- 8:23Speaker 1: it was like, you know what, Hey, I I took
- 8:25Speaker 1: a shot at this. It was a great experience. But
- 8:28Speaker 1: I really love college football, and this is a place
- 8:31Speaker 1: that I believe does college football right. You know, we're
- 8:33Speaker 1: not we're not using players. We're not we're not bringing
- 8:36Speaker 1: them in if they're not good enough, throwing them out.
- 8:38Speaker 1: You know, this is a place that really wants to
- 8:40Speaker 1: develop guys, and so that kind of matches who I am.
- 8:43Speaker 3: So did you did you always feel like you was
- 8:45Speaker 3: going to be a coach?
- 8:46Speaker 4: I know, playing linebacker at Penn State and then being
- 8:48Speaker 4: a GA at Penn State. Right after, did you feel
- 8:51Speaker 4: like this was your calling to be a coach, being
- 8:53Speaker 4: around young men, developing them, developing them and giving them
- 8:56Speaker 4: the opportunity to be players in the NFL.
- 8:59Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah.
- 9:00Speaker 1: From the time I was from the time I was like,
- 9:02Speaker 1: I don't know, five, six, seven, eight years old, I
- 9:04Speaker 1: wanted to be a college football coach. It's my wife
- 9:06Speaker 1: sometimes she'll say to me, like, man, you're so lucky,
- 9:08Speaker 1: Like you know what you want to do your whole life.
- 9:10Speaker 1: You know, my dad, my dad's a minister, and he's
- 9:12Speaker 1: also but he's also a high school teacher and coach.
- 9:14Speaker 1: My uncle's in the pennsylvani high school coach is all
- 9:16Speaker 1: the fame. Like my whole life, I always wanted to
- 9:19Speaker 1: coach and coach college football. You know. I never wanted
- 9:21Speaker 1: to coach high school, never really wanted to coach the pros.
- 9:23Speaker 1: I wanted to be a college football coach. And I
- 9:25Speaker 1: you know, being at Penn State, being around Joe Paternal
- 9:28Speaker 1: I wanted to do that. And so being here now,
- 9:32Speaker 1: you know, through the through the journey of Temple to
- 9:34Speaker 1: Baylor to Carolina here, you know, being at a place
- 9:36Speaker 1: that when I walk in every day I watched walk
- 9:38Speaker 1: by five national championship trophies. That's that's something. When I
- 9:41Speaker 1: was eight years old, I couldn't have even comprehended.
- 9:44Speaker 2: Talk about the spring league that you've introduced this year.
- 9:47Speaker 2: It's been a talk of a couple of my group.
- 9:48Speaker 1: Chats really positive negative positive, a couple.
- 9:52Speaker 2: Like all this is interesting. But dudes talking like, you know,
- 9:55Speaker 2: it's something that it's something that changes it up during
- 9:57Speaker 2: the springtime.
- 9:58Speaker 1: You know, spring can be there. Yeah, you know, I
- 10:01Speaker 1: tell you what it is. You know, I just I
- 10:03Speaker 1: was sitting there one day and I kept thinking about,
- 10:05Speaker 1: you know, the history of Nebraska, Tom Milesborn. You know,
- 10:08Speaker 1: multiple drills going on, multiple fields going on. So we've
- 10:10Speaker 1: always tried to do that. You know, in basketball, like
- 10:13Speaker 1: you know, you can go play summer league, right, you
- 10:14Speaker 1: can go play AU when you're not in season. Baseball
- 10:17Speaker 1: you can go play Wooden bad league. And football you
- 10:18Speaker 1: basically just lift, you know, So how do you get
- 10:20Speaker 1: better at footballer than playing football? So you know, we
- 10:24Speaker 1: have three quarterbacks. We have Heinrich who won the starting
- 10:26Speaker 1: job halfway through the year. Unbelievable young man, gonna get
- 10:30Speaker 1: better and better and better. We have Danny Kalin, the
- 10:33Speaker 1: lead eleven quarterback for forty five minutes down the road,
- 10:36Speaker 1: Dylan RelA just you know, on the top couch in
- 10:38Speaker 1: the country. So we have three guys that want to
- 10:39Speaker 1: be the quarterback. And I started thinking about like reps,
- 10:43Speaker 1: and I was like, man, we have enough, Oligneman, We
- 10:46Speaker 1: have enough of this, We have enough of that. What
- 10:48Speaker 1: if we just divided the team up into thirds and
- 10:50Speaker 1: we just played football? Because you know, when when I
- 10:53Speaker 1: was growing up, when you guys were growing up, like, yeah,
- 10:55Speaker 1: we had video games, you know, but like you guys
- 10:57Speaker 1: probably had phones. I didn't, but like we still went
- 10:59Speaker 1: out played attle lot. A lot of my guys like
- 11:01Speaker 1: they don't they dodn'tally grow up playing They might have
- 11:04Speaker 1: played a little basketall. They play a lot of football.
- 11:05Speaker 1: And so let's play, let's put the ball down, let's
- 11:08Speaker 1: let's have officials, let's let let's just play the game
- 11:11Speaker 1: and not just do drills. And so that, with a
- 11:14Speaker 1: creative staff, turned into the bug Eaters, turned into the
- 11:16Speaker 1: Rattlesnake Boys, turning the old gold Knights, taking the old
- 11:19Speaker 1: team names, and like it's crazy, like you're trying to
- 11:22Speaker 1: tell your guys to be leaders and guys like nah,
- 11:24Speaker 1: I try to keep to myself. And then all of
- 11:25Speaker 1: a sudden I named someone a GM. Hey, you're the
- 11:27Speaker 1: GM of this team and that team doesn't perform, He's like, hey,
- 11:29Speaker 1: you're getting cut tomorrow.
- 11:29Speaker 3: Bro.
- 11:30Speaker 1: Hey if you don't know you, like, all of a sudden,
- 11:32Speaker 1: you see, let this level of competitiveness come out and
- 11:35Speaker 1: our guys. So it's been unbelievably fun.
- 11:38Speaker 4: And we heard like you involved the injured guys as
- 11:41Speaker 4: being the GMS to keep everybody interacted with with the team.
- 11:45Speaker 4: And I think that's great, like to do something like
- 11:48Speaker 4: that because let alone, sometimes when you injured, it almost
- 11:50Speaker 4: felt like the coaches never talked to you.
- 11:52Speaker 3: Not so I think that goes a long way too.
- 11:56Speaker 2: So I was watching a couple of a couple of
- 11:58Speaker 2: highlights back there. I saw you, come on, make that tackle.
- 12:05Speaker 2: I okay, I want to I don't want to jump
- 12:07Speaker 2: around asking you about this. But a big reason why
- 12:10Speaker 2: you came here was Trev Alberts. What was it like
- 12:12Speaker 2: the day you got the phone call that he was
- 12:14Speaker 2: going to be moving on A and M.
- 12:15Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, Trev had been really cool with me
- 12:16Speaker 1: and kind of talking to me about it beforehand, like hey,
- 12:18Speaker 1: this is out there, this could happen, you know, for me,
- 12:23Speaker 1: for me. So when what it was, I was in Scotland,
- 12:26Speaker 1: I was playing, I was playing. I took my son
- 12:28Speaker 1: on like a little golf trip. My son's a golfer
- 12:30Speaker 1: and you know, was graduating high school. He stayed behind
- 12:32Speaker 1: in Charlotte so that I could take this job. He
- 12:34Speaker 1: was like, hey, so I took me and him father's
- 12:36Speaker 1: son trip. And I was coming down thirteen and my
- 12:39Speaker 1: phone rang and it was trev And I picked it
- 12:43Speaker 1: up and I was like, oh, dang, all right, well, hey,
- 12:46Speaker 1: I'll call you later. I appreciate it. Then I went on,
- 12:48Speaker 1: I had go ahead, go ahead and knock that that
- 12:50Speaker 1: little bar in a little something. But but in my world,
- 12:57Speaker 1: you know of coaching, like people come and go right,
- 13:00Speaker 1: like people move on, doesn't we love them? Like I've
- 13:02Speaker 1: had different coordinators, I've had different coaches, Like players come,
- 13:05Speaker 1: they graduate, players come, their free agents, they move on.
- 13:07Speaker 1: And I think the biggest thing is always just to
- 13:09Speaker 1: make the most of your time when you're with somebody.
- 13:12Speaker 1: So you know, when I got hired, there was a
- 13:14Speaker 1: president and there was a d that hired me. They're
- 13:17Speaker 1: both gone. But I since I've been here, like this
- 13:21Speaker 1: is home, Like I love it here, Like my wife
- 13:24Speaker 1: opened up a business down in Lincoln. My kids are
- 13:27Speaker 1: in school, they're doing well. My son's coming to be
- 13:29Speaker 1: a freshman here, Like this is where we want to live. So,
- 13:32Speaker 1: you know, thankfully we hired Troy Dannon, who I've known
- 13:34Speaker 1: since way back at Temple. I mean he's a rock star.
- 13:37Speaker 1: But uh yeah, it was kind of a little bit
- 13:40Speaker 1: of a shock, to be honest with you.
- 13:41Speaker 2: How do the decisions like that like affect yours affect you?
- 13:45Speaker 1: Well? I think the biggest thing is, like, you know,
- 13:47Speaker 1: you want to have an AD. Two things. You want
- 13:49Speaker 1: to have an AD who wants you to be the coach.
- 13:50Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying, Like, you don't want somebody
- 13:52Speaker 1: who's like, yeah, he's the coach. But but things get dicey.
- 13:55Speaker 1: I'm moving on and hire my own guy, right like
- 13:57Speaker 1: you want to feel like, hey, this is my guy.
- 13:59Speaker 1: Because the one thing I've learned in this job, you
- 14:02Speaker 1: can't do this job well if you don't have like
- 14:04Speaker 1: a great, great partner and you have to have an
- 14:06Speaker 1: AD or a GM or you know whatever who's a
- 14:09Speaker 1: great partner with you, and so Trevor was a great partner.
- 14:12Speaker 1: You know, when I was a Temple, you know, we
- 14:14Speaker 1: want a ton against Pat Craft is now the AD
- 14:15Speaker 1: at Penn State was like like my right hand guy,
- 14:18Speaker 1: Like we battled through everything together. As a Baylor, mac
- 14:21Speaker 1: Rose was like my right hand guy. So trev I
- 14:23Speaker 1: picked coming here partially because he was gonna be my
- 14:26Speaker 1: right hand guy when we lost him. Obviously it's frustrating,
- 14:29Speaker 1: but I've known Troy, and so when Troy came in
- 14:31Speaker 1: the mix, I was like, all right, that's someone that
- 14:33Speaker 1: I really believe in. You know, when you win at Tulane,
- 14:36Speaker 1: like you know how to get things done to win.
- 14:39Speaker 1: And we were sitting up in Havelock at one of
- 14:42Speaker 1: the bars and Hailoc last year, watching Tulane play USC
- 14:45Speaker 1: and watching Tulane beat USC and whatever bowl game. It
- 14:48Speaker 1: was like, that's mind blowing. So to have that ad
- 14:51Speaker 1: here with us, with these resources, I was like, all right,
- 14:54Speaker 1: we'll be all right.
- 14:55Speaker 2: Yeah, how much were you involved with that decision with
- 14:57Speaker 2: getting him here?
- 14:57Speaker 1: With the de Troy, They asked me for some feedback,
- 14:59Speaker 1: They asked me for some names. I gave him three names,
- 15:01Speaker 1: and he was one of those names, you know, And
- 15:03Speaker 1: obviously I'm not. I didn't pick it, you know, Chris
- 15:05Speaker 1: Koborick was in and President did all the work on it.
- 15:07Speaker 1: But I appreciated them saying like, hey, who would you know?
- 15:09Speaker 1: Who would you want? I said, hey, there's probably a
- 15:11Speaker 1: lot of guys. Here's a couple guys, I know. You know,
- 15:14Speaker 1: he had just gotten to Washington, obviously getting to Washington,
- 15:16Speaker 1: going to the National Championship Game and then leaving to
- 15:19Speaker 1: come here. That that's hard and it'll be hard for him.
- 15:21Speaker 1: I think it says a lot about Nebraska though, that
- 15:23Speaker 1: someone would be at a place like Washington and want
- 15:26Speaker 1: to come here. So they were really good to be
- 15:28Speaker 1: through of that process, you know, asking me. I'm sure
- 15:30Speaker 1: they asked Fred some others, you know, hey, what do
- 15:31Speaker 1: you think? But I knew that. I knew that Troy
- 15:34Speaker 1: was the type of guy that would come here. And
- 15:36Speaker 1: the whole thing is always like just put this place
- 15:37Speaker 1: on steroids, like we got the best of the best.
- 15:39Speaker 1: But like what we do need to do is like
- 15:41Speaker 1: we need to like have an urgency, Like we can't
- 15:44Speaker 1: just we can't be five and seven. We we can't
- 15:47Speaker 1: be just an average team in the country. This is
- 15:49Speaker 1: the University of Nebraska. Like, we're supposed to be here,
- 15:51Speaker 1: and we're here right now, and so it's not my
- 15:54Speaker 1: fault we're here. It's not anybody's fault. We're here. We're
- 15:56Speaker 1: just here. But we got to get if it's if
- 15:58Speaker 1: we're here in three or four years, then that then
- 16:00Speaker 1: is my fault. So having Troy evolved makes me feel
- 16:03Speaker 1: really good about that.
- 16:04Speaker 2: Looking for an assistant with your credit card but can't
- 16:06Speaker 2: get a hold of anyone. Luckily, with twenty four to
- 16:08Speaker 2: seven US based live customer service from Discover, everyone has
- 16:12Speaker 2: the option to talk to a real person anytime, day
- 16:15Speaker 2: or night. Yes, you heard that right. You can talk
- 16:18Speaker 2: to a real human and customer service anytime. Sounds like
- 16:21Speaker 2: a real game changer if you ask the boys, make
- 16:24Speaker 2: the right call and get the service you deserve with Discover.
- 16:27Speaker 2: Limitations apply see terms that discovered dot com slash credit
- 16:32Speaker 2: card with what Troy get involved too and the stuff
- 16:35Speaker 2: that you got to build with Trev What areas do
- 16:39Speaker 2: you feel like because you got these beautiful facilities? What
- 16:43Speaker 2: areas would you say could have been lacking to where
- 16:47Speaker 2: it's now? You guys are growing and getting a lot
- 16:49Speaker 2: better in those set areas.
- 16:51Speaker 1: Yeah, I think what Trev allowed me to do was
- 16:54Speaker 1: was go out and hire a big time strength staff
- 16:58Speaker 1: with the right amount of people, hire a big time
- 17:01Speaker 1: nutrition staff with you know, with the right amount of people.
- 17:05Speaker 1: And that's nothing about anybody who share before they were
- 17:07Speaker 1: they were a great coach. I'm just saying hiring my people.
- 17:09Speaker 1: And you know, I first started, like you know, we
- 17:11Speaker 1: had one strength coach and one assistant a temple, and
- 17:13Speaker 1: then it was like one strength coach and four assistants.
- 17:15Speaker 1: And now we live in a world where like, you
- 17:18Speaker 1: better have sports science people, and you better have interns,
- 17:20Speaker 1: and you better have you know, you better have a
- 17:22Speaker 1: PT and a director of rehab and a director of
- 17:24Speaker 1: return to play, And I mean this is a whole
- 17:27Speaker 1: different world now. And so how do you keep players
- 17:30Speaker 1: from going into the portal and leaving. They know that
- 17:33Speaker 1: they're getting developed, they know they're getting better. I know
- 17:35Speaker 1: there was gonna say nil, Yeah, that's part of it, obviously,
- 17:38Speaker 1: But if you're at a place where you're like, man,
- 17:40Speaker 1: I'm getting bigger, I'm getting stronger, my mind's getting better,
- 17:44Speaker 1: I'm learning the game of football. If you know you're
- 17:46Speaker 1: getting developed, then you're probably gonna stick around, and so
- 17:50Speaker 1: putting money and infrastructure into that. We have the best
- 17:53Speaker 1: I'm telling you, we're the best nutritionist in the country.
- 17:55Speaker 1: She's here, her and her team, they're here. They have
- 17:58Speaker 1: two full time chefs just for football who were also dieticians,
- 18:00Speaker 1: Like they know every person's food allergy, every person's want.
- 18:03Speaker 1: We have five guys doing Ramadan like they're here at
- 18:06Speaker 1: They're here at four thirty four forty five making food
- 18:08Speaker 1: for those guys so they can eat before first prayer.
- 18:10Speaker 1: They're giving them food at night like they are the
- 18:12Speaker 1: They are the best nutrition staff in the country. That's
- 18:15Speaker 1: not cheap. That's not easy. Way to go. Hire them
- 18:17Speaker 1: from the SEC and bring them here, so travel out
- 18:19Speaker 1: us to do all that stuff. The key to me
- 18:21Speaker 1: is putting the right people in this building. And if
- 18:24Speaker 1: you have the right people in this building, that will
- 18:26Speaker 1: track and retain really good players.
- 18:28Speaker 3: Yeah, so go ahead.
- 18:30Speaker 2: No, I was just kind of like, hell yeah, no, that.
- 18:34Speaker 4: Was real, Like, you gotta surround your you gotta surround
- 18:37Speaker 4: your athletes with the right people.
- 18:38Speaker 3: That's the only way you can make the program better.
- 18:40Speaker 4: And I feel that I wish I'll play for Nebraska.
- 18:44Speaker 2: They get you juic stuff, right.
- 18:47Speaker 4: To say real talk, So like did you bring so
- 18:52Speaker 4: you talked about the NI nil deal being going to
- 18:55Speaker 4: the temple, temple not having that and now having that,
- 18:58Speaker 4: How does that change your coaching your recruit Like how
- 19:02Speaker 4: is it because you owe school now to this new
- 19:04Speaker 4: school where it's crazy and it's not really policed.
- 19:08Speaker 1: So right, it's it's I think it's one of the
- 19:11Speaker 1: good things for me that I was in the NFL
- 19:13Speaker 1: and I dealt with the whole free agent process, right,
- 19:16Speaker 1: Like my whole thing in that time was like, hey,
- 19:19Speaker 1: when it gets to the end of the season, like
- 19:20Speaker 1: you handle your money like you handle you. You handle you.
- 19:23Speaker 1: Once you agree to your contract or you're with us,
- 19:25Speaker 1: then you're with us. And like that was always my
- 19:28Speaker 1: my thing. So when a player was like, hey, you know,
- 19:31Speaker 1: I'm going to do this for my contract, I understood
- 19:33Speaker 1: it because I was like, you know, I've had probably
- 19:35Speaker 1: seven or eight different contracts. I've been head coached four
- 19:37Speaker 1: different times with you know, renegotiations, and I probably had
- 19:40Speaker 1: seven eight contracts. Like, when it comes time for that,
- 19:42Speaker 1: it's time for that. So coming into the world of NIL,
- 19:47Speaker 1: when a player is seeking to get what's theirs. I
- 19:50Speaker 1: have no fundamental issue with that. If it starts to
- 19:53Speaker 1: bleed over into well, if I don't get this, I'm
- 19:55Speaker 1: not doing that. That that's not how you just not
- 19:57Speaker 1: how you do things in the NFL, other than you know,
- 19:58Speaker 1: if you're holding now, which is different. But I'm saying, like,
- 20:01Speaker 1: you know, you have to have your business side and
- 20:03Speaker 1: you have to have your other side. And so we're
- 20:05Speaker 1: preparing our guys for life, and we're preparing them for
- 20:08Speaker 1: the National Football League, and so everything they do from
- 20:11Speaker 1: how they recover to taking notes and meetings to their
- 20:14Speaker 1: mindset to now how you handle the business part of
- 20:17Speaker 1: it is something that I want to be the best at.
- 20:21Speaker 1: So yeah, it's definitely different what I did see when
- 20:24Speaker 1: I was in the NFL when we draft to sit
- 20:25Speaker 1: young players, I saw some guys with a lot of
- 20:27Speaker 1: talent who at a couple of schools. I was like, man,
- 20:30Speaker 1: they really didn't coach you very hard today because they
- 20:32Speaker 1: were so afraid that maybe that person was going to
- 20:34Speaker 1: end up in the portal. And you know what, like,
- 20:37Speaker 1: I'm sorry, if you want to be great, you got
- 20:39Speaker 1: to get coached hard. If you want to be great,
- 20:41Speaker 1: you need to be coached hard. And what I mean
- 20:43Speaker 1: by that is, when it's right, it's right. When it's wrong,
- 20:45Speaker 1: it's wrong. When you do it right, maybe were going
- 20:46Speaker 1: to celebrate when you do it wrong, We're not going
- 20:48Speaker 1: to celebrate when you do it wrong. Again. Really, we're
- 20:51Speaker 1: going to talk about it. And when I'm wrong, and
- 20:53Speaker 1: I think that's one of the things I do best
- 20:54Speaker 1: as a head coach. When I'm wrong, then I'm gonna
- 20:56Speaker 1: talk about it too. I'm gona stand up front team,
- 20:57Speaker 1: like I messed this up, guys. And so being in
- 21:01Speaker 1: a program that doesn't push guys like that, they become
- 21:04Speaker 1: fifth round draft picks instead of first round draft picks.
- 21:06Speaker 1: And we're trying to produce first round draft picks. And
- 21:10Speaker 1: you know, when I talked to Dion Dawkins, when I
- 21:12Speaker 1: talked to some of those guys that I coached in college,
- 21:16Speaker 1: they're still telling funny stories I don't even remember, Like
- 21:18Speaker 1: you remember the time you did this, Remember the time
- 21:20Speaker 1: you do that. I probably did do that, And like
- 21:22Speaker 1: you're doing a coach pollini, I'm watching you do you know?
- 21:25Speaker 1: But but they need to be pushed, they need to
- 21:27Speaker 1: be developed. And so think about everything I've talked about,
- 21:30Speaker 1: you give them the best facilities, you put the best
- 21:31Speaker 1: people around them that are helping them and protecting them.
- 21:34Speaker 1: But then you have a high standard form. They gotta
- 21:37Speaker 1: want those things. And then at the same time, when
- 21:38Speaker 1: you have an opportunity, you know, if NIL can help
- 21:41Speaker 1: take care of them, then we take care of them.
- 21:43Speaker 1: And you know, that's why I believe. That's why I
- 21:46Speaker 1: believe that we're always going to be successful. And what
- 21:49Speaker 1: we've seen in two years is not many guys want
- 21:50Speaker 1: to leave, you know, they want to be here. There's
- 21:52Speaker 1: a difference between someone who's like, hey, coach, I'm not playing,
- 21:54Speaker 1: I'd love to go play. At this way, we've helped
- 21:56Speaker 1: more guys do that. We love those guys, but no
- 21:58Speaker 1: one's saying, hey, I want to go leave because almost
- 22:00Speaker 1: said about this or that.
- 22:02Speaker 2: Do you feel like, uh, do you feel like Nebraska
- 22:05Speaker 2: and everybody around the state understands the importance of NIL.
- 22:07Speaker 2: So I know last year there were a couple of
- 22:09Speaker 2: clips going around, not of you pushing that, No, of
- 22:12Speaker 2: you pushing saying people don't but people having the expectation
- 22:14Speaker 2: of quarterback play. Hey, a starting quarterback, it costs, it
- 22:17Speaker 2: costs that, or you need the you need the level
- 22:20Speaker 2: of support out there to match the level of expection
- 22:22Speaker 2: of expectation. Do you feel like that's happening here?
- 22:24Speaker 1: Yeah, I gots I had some coaches. I had some coaches.
- 22:27Speaker 1: I had some coaches across the country hit me up like,
- 22:29Speaker 1: hey man, how are you gonna put that out there?
- 22:31Speaker 1: But I was like, it's the reality, right, Like, that's
- 22:33Speaker 1: that's the that's the problem in my mind. That's the
- 22:35Speaker 1: problem with NILS. It's not transparent like in the NFL.
- 22:39Speaker 1: As you guys know, if an agent would have called
- 22:41Speaker 1: us and been like, hey, you know what for Will
- 22:43Speaker 1: Compton and you know I've got I've already got three years,
- 22:46Speaker 1: you know, eight million a year. You know, could you
- 22:47Speaker 1: guys do eight point five? And then we're like, now
- 22:50Speaker 1: we can't pull the trigger on that, And all of
- 22:51Speaker 1: a sudden we see he signs three years for four
- 22:53Speaker 1: million a year, and we know that agent lied to us.
- 22:56Speaker 1: Then we're never doing business with him again, you know. So,
- 22:58Speaker 1: so the NFL is so transparent because you see the
- 23:00Speaker 1: contracts afterwards. In the NIL world, it's all kind of hidden.
- 23:05Speaker 1: So I forget what you just asked me, bro the uh.
- 23:11Speaker 3: Yeah, Nebraska.
- 23:13Speaker 2: Yeah, the support of the level of support matching the expectations.
- 23:17Speaker 1: So my point has always been like, hey, let's let's
- 23:19Speaker 1: keep it all out there, let's make it. Let's put
- 23:20Speaker 1: it all out there and say, you know, like there's
- 23:23Speaker 1: teams that we that we're going to face that spend
- 23:25Speaker 1: twenty million dollars on their football team twenty to twenty
- 23:27Speaker 1: five million dollars in the football team. So you know,
- 23:31Speaker 1: a lot of people tell me like, I don't believe
- 23:33Speaker 1: in NIL, and I'm like, well, it's it's not something
- 23:36Speaker 1: to believe in or not. It's real. It's here, like
- 23:38Speaker 1: it's it's what it is. So I'm always like, hey,
- 23:41Speaker 1: if you want us to finish first, then then let's
- 23:44Speaker 1: put first, like first first, then everything first, coaching staff
- 23:48Speaker 1: for salary pool, first, facilities, first. Nil. There's a reason
- 23:52Speaker 1: why in the NFL that have parody they have a
- 23:54Speaker 1: salary cap, and there is really no salary cap in
- 23:56Speaker 1: college right now. So I think we're heading in the
- 23:59Speaker 1: right direction. I think it's hard for some people to
- 24:01Speaker 1: sometimes understand, like, you know, what are we doing here?
- 24:04Speaker 1: To me, investing in young people's never wrong, Like everyone
- 24:07Speaker 1: has this thing of like wow, kids are gonna wait,
- 24:09Speaker 1: you know what I'm only where I'm at in my
- 24:11Speaker 1: life because people have invested in me and given me opportunities.
- 24:14Speaker 1: So if we can help young people on our team
- 24:17Speaker 1: have opportunities for name, image and lightness, then I'm one
- 24:19Speaker 1: hundred percent for it. And if we want to win,
- 24:21Speaker 1: we better do it at a really high level.
- 24:24Speaker 2: Do you got anything else? Go ahead, No, I'm solid.
- 24:28Speaker 3: I wanted to talk about this.
- 24:29Speaker 4: I know in Temple you was what the first coach
- 24:32Speaker 4: to have two consecutive ten game wins since nineteen seventy nine,
- 24:37Speaker 4: and you you talked about some of them players like uh,
- 24:40Speaker 4: and you're trying to bring that mentality here to Nebraska, correct,
- 24:45Speaker 4: Like that's that's what you're looking for.
- 24:47Speaker 1: Yeah, you know the way we played football at Temple.
- 24:50Speaker 1: I mean I love Temple. I love Temple University, Temples
- 24:54Speaker 1: in Temples in North Philadelphia. That's a real neighborhood with
- 24:57Speaker 1: great people that you go to Temple. You're a tough person.
- 25:01Speaker 1: You grew up with a tough place. You put your
- 25:02Speaker 1: feet on concrete every day, you know, So we had
- 25:05Speaker 1: to play football that way. So like we were gonna
- 25:08Speaker 1: hit you, we were going to strike you. We kept
- 25:10Speaker 1: track of like the amount of times a team we
- 25:13Speaker 1: played lost the next week, Like we always kept track
- 25:15Speaker 1: of that score. We're trying to beat you on Saturday
- 25:17Speaker 1: and then have you lose again next Saturday. And so
- 25:20Speaker 1: we played football that way and what that allows us
- 25:22Speaker 1: to do because we practiced that way and lifted that way.
- 25:25Speaker 1: You know what, we had a lot of guys come
- 25:27Speaker 1: in with one star recruits, no star recruits who went
- 25:30Speaker 1: on a play pro football, played in Canada, played in
- 25:32Speaker 1: the NFL because they got they got trained. And when
- 25:35Speaker 1: you have a team like Temple and you beat Vanderbilt
- 25:38Speaker 1: at Vanderbilt, you know, coming off a seven win season,
- 25:40Speaker 1: when you beat Penn State for the first time in
- 25:41Speaker 1: seventy four years, it's only because your players have put
- 25:44Speaker 1: the work in. And we went to Baylor. Baylor was
- 25:46Speaker 1: a little different, were a little more spread. We still
- 25:48Speaker 1: played good defense. When we came here, we were like,
- 25:51Speaker 1: where can we go that we can? But people love defense,
- 25:55Speaker 1: people will love special teams, people will love practice. People
- 25:59Speaker 1: won't think that working hard is you know, is a
- 26:02Speaker 1: is a punishment. You know, Like like there's people that
- 26:04Speaker 1: pay money to go to cross fit. They call it CrossFit, right,
- 26:06Speaker 1: they do like this isn't punishment. This is we're investing
- 26:09Speaker 1: in you. Where can we go? And and Nebraska seemed
- 26:13Speaker 1: like that. You know, they believe in the running game,
- 26:14Speaker 1: they believe in being physical, they believe in defense. So
- 26:18Speaker 1: I believe that this is like the way we were
- 26:21Speaker 1: at Temple, but but just with way more resources, way
- 26:25Speaker 1: way way more opportunities. And so that's what made this job.
- 26:28Speaker 1: So that's why my wife kept saying, like you need
- 26:29Speaker 1: to go there, like like where else are you gonna go?
- 26:32Speaker 1: That That's gonna play football the way you really want
- 26:34Speaker 1: to play it deep down inside, because deep down inside,
- 26:36Speaker 1: I want to play football that way. I want I
- 26:37Speaker 1: want the game to be nine on seven, you know.
- 26:39Speaker 1: So you know I love having great quarterbacks. You know
- 26:43Speaker 1: you've met a couple of them. I want to throw
- 26:44Speaker 1: the ball around and be fun, but at the end
- 26:46Speaker 1: of the day, I want to win the physical battle.
- 26:48Speaker 1: And that's why I loved my time at Temple. And
- 26:50Speaker 1: that's what I believe Nebraska will let us.
- 26:52Speaker 4: One more question. You've been from New York? How is
- 26:55Speaker 4: Nebraska band from New York? Like the different?
- 26:59Speaker 1: Yeah, throwed out. You know, before I took this job,
- 27:05Speaker 1: I wanted to come out and see it, and I
- 27:07Speaker 1: think it's the number one thing that happens in recruiting.
- 27:10Speaker 1: Like you first hear I will recruit a kid from Miami,
- 27:13Speaker 1: recruit kid from anywhere. And you're here in Nebraska and
- 27:15Speaker 1: you think, honestly, you did like Cornfield on a campus, right,
- 27:18Speaker 1: And remember when I was in the I was in
- 27:20Speaker 1: the big twelve. You know, you go to Oklahoma State
- 27:21Speaker 1: and it was like a little downtown and then a
- 27:23Speaker 1: big stadium. So I thought it was gonna be that.
- 27:25Speaker 1: And my wife and I were like, I don't know
- 27:27Speaker 1: about that. We came here and we went down, we
- 27:30Speaker 1: drove around the Haymarket, we drove down O Street, and
- 27:33Speaker 1: I was like, this is like a city. I mean
- 27:35Speaker 1: it's not a big city, but this is like a
- 27:38Speaker 1: big town or a small city. I was like, if
- 27:39Speaker 1: I can't recruit here, you know, where can I recruit?
- 27:42Speaker 1: You know, we started driving around looking at you know,
- 27:45Speaker 1: the town overall. I mean it's, man, it's like eight
- 27:49Speaker 1: or nine public high schools right here in Lincoln. And
- 27:50Speaker 1: then you know, you drive forty minutes, forty five minutes
- 27:53Speaker 1: to Omaha, and Omaha is one of the coolest cities
- 27:54Speaker 1: that people don't know about one of the coolest cities
- 27:56Speaker 1: in the Midwest. Like you come back here. I don't
- 27:59Speaker 1: know if you ever went to the College World Series.
- 28:00Speaker 1: The College World Series I thought I was in, Like,
- 28:02Speaker 1: it's like a mixture of like the NCAA Final Four,
- 28:05Speaker 1: Marty Gras all in one. I'm like, this is unbelievable
- 28:07Speaker 1: and great concerts and great so so. Yeah, it's not
- 28:11Speaker 1: New York City, but the people here love football. It's safe.
- 28:16Speaker 2: You know.
- 28:16Speaker 1: There's not a place in town where I'm like, my mother,
- 28:18Speaker 1: there's not a place here in Lincoln. I'm like, hey, guys,
- 28:19Speaker 1: don't go there. Don't go here. It's a it's the
- 28:22Speaker 1: people here care about the team, they care about people.
- 28:25Speaker 1: It's safe, it's close to everything. You know. We're in
- 28:28Speaker 1: the Big ten now that goes from east coast to
- 28:29Speaker 1: west coast. But we only have a two and a
- 28:31Speaker 1: half hour flight here, a two and a half hour.
- 28:33Speaker 1: Other guys are gonna be swinging five six hours west
- 28:35Speaker 1: coast to east coast, East coast to west coast, Like
- 28:37Speaker 1: we're in the central part of the country. A quick
- 28:39Speaker 1: flight to Chicago, two hour drive to Kansas City. I
- 28:42Speaker 1: came here and I was like, you know, Lincoln, Lincoln's
- 28:45Speaker 1: Lincoln's what I was kind of looking for. A big city,
- 28:47Speaker 1: not just a college town. It's a state capitol and
- 28:50Speaker 1: omahas fire. I don't care what people say. It's got
- 28:52Speaker 1: a great restaurants seen. So I've really, really, really enjoyed it.
- 28:56Speaker 1: I still like going back to New York City. Everyone's
- 28:58Speaker 1: while getting on the subway and you know, I a
- 29:00Speaker 1: little fixing, but but I've loved I've loved being able
- 29:03Speaker 1: to be here and be out in the in the
- 29:05Speaker 1: on a farm, and then be downtown at a nice restaurant,
- 29:08Speaker 1: you know. Twenty minute difference.
- 29:09Speaker 2: Ye Dylan was talking about the Matt drills and talking
- 29:15Speaker 2: how serious those were. Some coaches do away with the
- 29:17Speaker 2: Matt drills, yep, especially in this day and age. Yeah,
- 29:20Speaker 2: but you got them aliva, you got them alive.
- 29:22Speaker 1: And well, you know what's really cool for me is, uh,
- 29:25Speaker 1: there was like a Twitter thread and it was players
- 29:29Speaker 1: you know, Jarreed works for me over here, but that
- 29:31Speaker 1: played for us at Western Carolina, I don't know, twenty
- 29:34Speaker 1: years ago, and players from Temple and players from Baylor
- 29:38Speaker 1: and the players from here, and they were all they
- 29:41Speaker 1: were all making basically making fun of me, you know,
- 29:43Speaker 1: because I run the mat drill like it ain't like
- 29:45Speaker 1: I'm like and like I show up, but I sit
- 29:47Speaker 1: in the Matt drill. I'm the first row. Like I
- 29:49Speaker 1: run the Matt drill. And Sat who's my OC has
- 29:51Speaker 1: been with me at Western and Temple. He's the next guy.
- 29:54Speaker 1: And then who did the Matt drels as a player,
- 29:57Speaker 1: he's one of the guys. So like, if you're coaching
- 29:59Speaker 1: the Matt drill, if you're on the mat, like you
- 30:01Speaker 1: either went through it or you're you know, you're kind
- 30:03Speaker 1: of owe you from way back when. So but to me,
- 30:07Speaker 1: it's a rite of passage. And uh, we have a
- 30:09Speaker 1: player at m J. Sherman here. He you know, he
- 30:12Speaker 1: he came from the University of Georgia and won national championships,
- 30:15Speaker 1: you know, and and at first was like kind of
- 30:17Speaker 1: like why are we doing this coach in a very
- 30:19Speaker 1: respectful way, but struggled with it. And he had an
- 30:22Speaker 1: interview the other day and he was like, you know what,
- 30:25Speaker 1: I would ever want to go through the Matt drills again,
- 30:27Speaker 1: but a Matt dreel mixed men will make a man
- 30:29Speaker 1: out of you. And yeah, you can go out there
- 30:32Speaker 1: and you can do do football drills only and you
- 30:33Speaker 1: can run around bags and all that. But like all
- 30:36Speaker 1: the research, I don't care. If you listen to David
- 30:37Speaker 1: Goggins Jock o' willink, you read all the research says
- 30:41Speaker 1: that our brains get better, they get stronger when we
- 30:43Speaker 1: do things we don't want to do. We have to.
- 30:46Speaker 3: We have to.
- 30:47Speaker 1: We can't get saturated with dopamine where everything's at our fingertips,
- 30:50Speaker 1: and you have to earn and do hard things every
- 30:52Speaker 1: single day, not as punishment but actually as a reward
- 30:56Speaker 1: for yourself. So the Matt drills, man, they're just eight
- 30:58Speaker 1: times the standard, unbelievably high. If you don't do it,
- 31:01Speaker 1: we're doing it again the next morning. And when they
- 31:04Speaker 1: graduate and come through that, the goal is someday, someday
- 31:07Speaker 1: we take the field and our guys look at the
- 31:09Speaker 1: other team and they were like, you know what, There's
- 31:10Speaker 1: no way you paid the same price we played. There's
- 31:12Speaker 1: no way you're out there for three hours in the
- 31:14Speaker 1: spring wak like we are. There's no way you have
- 31:16Speaker 1: six am meetings. There's no way you do Matt drills
- 31:19Speaker 1: and then do position work afterwards. There's just no way.
- 31:21Speaker 1: And if you do, then let's have a good game.
- 31:23Speaker 1: And so that's we're not there yet, but we're pushing
- 31:26Speaker 1: it towards that. And look at Dyling, five star recruit,
- 31:29Speaker 1: you know, quarterback, you know, should he lay out and
- 31:31Speaker 1: dive in the matt drills. He gets out there, he's
- 31:34Speaker 1: doing it. You know, he's doing it. And they will
- 31:36Speaker 1: eventually have a brotherhood where they all like, hey, we
- 31:38Speaker 1: all did it.
- 31:39Speaker 2: I love that. Oh how do how Nash take to dominate? Huh?
- 31:45Speaker 1: Yeah, you don't want to go with the med ball,
- 31:49Speaker 1: you know, and and and and in fairness, this year,
- 31:52Speaker 1: you know, we didn't have Nash to do anything but that.
- 31:55Speaker 1: You know, hey, you know it's funny with that. He
- 32:00Speaker 1: he he uh he uh. And the one Chasing three
- 32:04Speaker 1: we did that little we do those little episodes. A
- 32:05Speaker 1: little documentary he saw about wrestling and he was like
- 32:07Speaker 1: his dad said yeah, like he was excited to finally
- 32:10Speaker 1: get back to that type of training where you really
- 32:12Speaker 1: push yourself. And I was like, oh, so he was
- 32:14Speaker 1: trying to say wrestling is harder than football. He was
- 32:16Speaker 1: like no, no, no, but he told me he's like,
- 32:19Speaker 1: coach is just And our defensive staff went over and
- 32:21Speaker 1: watched wrestling, and they came back and they were like,
- 32:23Speaker 1: you know, all right, we got it. Whatever he's doing enough,
- 32:27Speaker 1: and God blessed him. Like he showed up every day
- 32:29Speaker 1: to matchees with his cleats on, his shirt on, and
- 32:31Speaker 1: I'd be like standing on the side and he'd watch.
- 32:33Speaker 1: But he was there for his brothers, you know, Like,
- 32:35Speaker 1: but what he was going through was it was tough,
- 32:37Speaker 1: man Like, oh yeah, he was. What he was going
- 32:39Speaker 1: through was tough. You know, he was losing weight and
- 32:42Speaker 1: still lifting and training with us and then going out
- 32:45Speaker 1: and fighting for the wrestling team. I mean, you know,
- 32:48Speaker 1: we have three guys running track. We have one guy running,
- 32:51Speaker 1: one guy did wrestling. I mean we we kind of
- 32:53Speaker 1: got some multi.
- 32:53Speaker 2: Sport afftime dunk contest fire.
- 32:57Speaker 1: That was I got dunk, went up the dunk and
- 33:00Speaker 1: he hit me in the back of the head. But
- 33:02Speaker 1: I was out there for him, you know. So But
- 33:04Speaker 1: you know what, I think that's so cool for our guys, right,
- 33:06Speaker 1: Like it's one thing to get a bunch of publicity
- 33:09Speaker 1: like for like you know, for your name. It's another
- 33:12Speaker 1: thing can get publicity for like what you do. And
- 33:14Speaker 1: those guys whether whether they're giving you back to the community,
- 33:16Speaker 1: or they're dunk in a basketball halftime. Like, it's way
- 33:19Speaker 1: different dunk in a basketball in at the Intramural Center
- 33:21Speaker 1: than in front of like fifteen thousand people in your
- 33:24Speaker 1: heartache jumping out of her you know, but you know
- 33:26Speaker 1: they looked good. It was they were throwing it down. Yes,
- 33:29Speaker 1: FERDONI was you know, FERDONI coming off two way cls.
- 33:32Speaker 1: I mean that went from the foul line, you know
- 33:34Speaker 1: what I mean.
- 33:34Speaker 3: It was.
- 33:34Speaker 1: It was really fun to see those guys go out
- 33:36Speaker 1: there and get that done.
- 33:37Speaker 3: Bro.
- 33:38Speaker 2: Well, coach O, we appreciate your time. I don't feel
- 33:40Speaker 2: like I had one other thing. Oh well, uh, Heinrich
- 33:45Speaker 2: we had a pet peeve. We asked him what he
- 33:47Speaker 2: loves about coaching a pet peeve about it's pet peeve?
- 33:51Speaker 2: Is uh what was this pet peeve? Basically, you get
- 33:54Speaker 2: started on something, you're like, hey, it's gonna be guys,
- 33:56Speaker 2: just a quick little message, quickly two minute message. It
- 33:58Speaker 2: turns into like fifteen minutes, and then you get the
- 34:00Speaker 2: rambling about some story because.
- 34:03Speaker 3: You say you got to go to class.
- 34:04Speaker 1: I'm trying to get the class and text n telling
- 34:07Speaker 1: them to see him the office. No, it's funny because
- 34:11Speaker 1: like they I can see the guys imitate me, and
- 34:13Speaker 1: it's like, I don't realize I do some of the
- 34:15Speaker 1: things I do. But like the guys that Bailor would
- 34:17Speaker 1: imitate me. They'd be like, we go here, and then
- 34:19Speaker 1: I see these guys doing the same invitation. I'm like,
- 34:21Speaker 1: I must really do that. I guess I really do that.
- 34:24Speaker 3: Well, Coach.
- 34:24Speaker 1: We appreciate your time, Nah, I appreciate you guys be
- 34:26Speaker 1: in here though. That means a lot that you guys
- 34:28Speaker 1: are here, so so I for letting you down in Memphis,
- 34:31Speaker 1: you know what. The fact that you're here and the
- 34:33Speaker 1: fact that we got the live show tonight, Like that's
- 34:36Speaker 1: gonna be wear in the jersey. If I can fit
- 34:39Speaker 1: into it, you can fit in I mean, I know
- 34:40Speaker 1: they had to stretch it back in the day.
- 34:42Speaker 2: You know that would have been a different story.
- 34:45Speaker 1: But appreciate you
