- 0:07Los Angeles Dodgers faced the Atlanta Braves at Atlanta Stadium for a Monday night game on April 8th, 1974.
- 0:14The crowd was packed on this night for one reason, or rather, one person, Hank Aaron.
- 0:19Hank had tied Babe Ruth's all-time home run record on opening day in Cincinnati,
- 0:24and this was his first game of the season in Atlanta, and he was still sitting on 714.
- 0:29Los Angeles was managed by Walt Ulston in his 21st season with the club.
- 0:34The Dodgers were still an excellent team but kept falling short,
- 0:37having finished in second place in the NL West in each of the previous four seasons,
- 0:41thanks in most part to the Big Red Machine in Cincinnati.
- 0:45Atlanta was managed by Eddie Matthews in his third season as manager.
- 0:49Eddie was part of the one-two home run punch of the 1957 World Champion Braves,
- 0:53along with 23-year-old Hank Aaron.
- 0:56Most of you are probably familiar with the Atlanta radio broadcast of this game,
- 1:00featuring Milo Hamilton as the announcer,
- 1:02but this audio recording is from the KABC Los Angeles Radio broadcast,
- 1:07featuring announcers Vince Scully and Jerry Doggett.
- 1:37And Jimmy Lahren against Ron Reed.
- 1:40While everybody concentrates on Aaron naturally,
- 1:43the Dodgers trying to keep our winning streak alive, and David Rolfe takes the side.
- 1:49There is considerable pressure on everybody involved, particularly the umpires.
- 1:56In what could be Aaron's finest moment, we also have the threat of rain.
- 2:02The strike one fits. He's outside one-on-one.
- 2:05The second base umpire is Dave Davidson.
- 2:07It is his fifth year in the National League.
- 2:09Thankfully at first it is his third year in the league.
- 2:13Eddie Sudeol, I assume, is the crew chief. He is the veteran of the quartet.
- 2:17There's another strike below.
- 2:19Eddie is the second base umpire in his 17th year in the National League,
- 2:24and a third lead wire in his 14th year.
- 2:28So I would think that the second base umpire, Eddie Sudeol, has a big responsibility tonight.
- 2:34I mean, just imagine if Aaron hits it, and then we start to get rain in the third and the fourth inning.
- 2:40You wouldn't want to carry that load on your shoulders.
- 2:44Ron Reed's 2-2 pitch to Davey Lokes is filed away.
- 2:49Davey went to a fine start, as are the Dodgers.
- 2:53Lokes at 333 is 5-4-5 and still invasive.
- 2:59The Dodgers had pretty much their own way with Atlanta.
- 3:03They won sixth out of eight here, and all nine played in Dodger Stadium last year.
- 3:09Reed set his foul back and Salos Lucila at two balls and two strikes.
- 3:14It is a strange night in baseball.
- 3:18Normally, the celebrations are conducted after the fact,
- 3:23and yet before the ballgame tonight, all of the balloons went skyward,
- 3:28all the praise, all the speeches, all the punting.
- 3:31And of course, it just seems right, I guess, in the sense that the Dodgers could be involved in the record breaker.
- 3:38They've been involved in so many.
- 3:40There's 4-3 to Davey Lokes.
- 3:42Jerry and I have considered ourselves extremely fortunate to have been involved in so many exciting moments,
- 3:49but particular milestones in record breakers.
- 3:52The 3-2 pitch is 5-3-4, and Davey was drawn to first base.
- 3:57So one away, and Bill Buckner the batter.
- 4:03Going way back to the drama of a Bobby Thompson home run, which was memorable, but not a record breaker.
- 4:12Going through the first Dodger World Championship, which was memorable and, in a sense, a record breaker,
- 4:18since it's the only one for the borough of Brooklyn.
- 4:21Bill Buckner takes ball one outside.
- 4:24Then the move across to California.
- 4:28And then the tremendous individual accomplishments by men in Dodgy Interform.
- 4:35And you go back and think that Maury Wills breaking the Great Thai Cubs record,
- 4:39and nobody ever thought that would be broken.
- 4:42And even Hoyt Wilhelm had to finish up his career with the Dodgers,
- 4:46and every time Hoyt came in the game, he broke the record of Cy Young,
- 4:49and no one ever thought that record would be broken.
- 4:52The 1-0 pitch to Buckner is about to hover the mound.
- 4:55Back is second. Johnson has it.
- 4:57For both the first and second.
- 5:02Then leave it up to the Dodgers to be involved in two perfect games,
- 5:06and for extra window dressing, one of them for the World of C, in the World Series,
- 5:11when Don Weisson pitches man to C.
- 5:14Followed that up with the perfect game of Sandy Kovac.
- 5:19Then along came Don Drysdale with his string of consecutive scoreless innings.
- 5:24And now the Dodgers are on hand, and we'll find out about the base.
- 5:30The pitch to Jimmy Wynn is low, ball one, 1-0.
- 5:33Aaron is hitting fourth in the lineup.
- 5:38Ron Reed comes back to the plate, 1-0, and the breaking ball is low, ball two, 2-0.
- 5:46Gallo Centerfield has been painted in the stars and stripes,
- 5:52and the outline of the United States.
- 5:54They had various youngsters' positions showing where Aaron hits,
- 5:58100, 200, and all the way to where he is now.
- 6:01The pitch to Jimmy Wynn at spike, and the count to 1-1.
- 6:04The press box is literally bursting at the seams.
- 6:08Reportage has come from as far away as South America.
- 6:12Here's a 2-1 pitch. There's a high pop fly on the right side,
- 6:17and it'll be Mike Lumb waiting and waiting and makes the catch.
- 6:22The crowd has seen the Dodgers be close up, and now they get a little itchy
- 6:27because maybe Henry will come up in the first inning.
- 6:30At the score at the end of the half an inning, Dodgers nothing,
- 6:33Rays coming up, Ralph Dodd starting off,
- 6:37and Al Downing cheering a spot light of his own now.
- 6:42The quiet left-hander nicknamed Gentleman Al,
- 6:45waiting for a piece of paper to be grabbed around home plate and put away,
- 6:48and Ralph Dodd smacks his head and stuffs it in his hip pocket,
- 6:52and we're about ready.
- 6:54With the wind coming in just, we might have swirling paper in just throughout the evening.
- 6:59All right, Ralph Dodd to plate.
- 7:01Al Downing into the windup, left hand ready and delivers,
- 7:05and there's a bounce right back down.
- 7:07One-handed throws him out.
- 7:12What a way, and Mike Lumb the batter.
- 7:16One of the things that Downing has to do is to pitch his game despite the crowd.
- 7:23You know how this crowd will react if Downing tries to hit a corner and misses with Aaron,
- 7:28and every time it's ball one or ball two or ball three,
- 7:31the crowd will just lose something awful,
- 7:33and he will certainly have to hold on to his professional dignity and concentration.
- 7:38The pitch to Mike Lumb is high, ball one,
- 7:41so there are all kinds of angles of pressure attached to this one tonight.
- 7:46Can he shoot all the umpire?
- 7:48Al Downing the pitcher, and of course the man himself.
- 7:52The pitch to Lumb is low, ball two, two and all.
- 8:02Downing checking into the windup, and the 2-0 pitch on the way is given to Deep White Field,
- 8:08looking down the line as it goes foul.
- 8:13And Mike Lumb, the kid from Hawaii, really shook him up,
- 8:18but he pulled it foul.
- 8:20Let me count two and one.
- 8:22On deck, J.L. Evans.
- 8:29A stellar crowd in Atlanta.
- 8:34And Al Downing is going back to work, one away, first inning no score.
- 8:41Now Downing into the windup, and Al delivers and gets the strike on the inside corner, two and two.
- 8:48Downing was a nine-game winner last year against the Braves.
- 8:54He was two and all against Atlanta last year, five and all night time.
- 8:58Now the 2-2 pitch is hung on a high chopper back to Downing.
- 9:02He grubs it, throws him out.
- 9:06Two down, and here is Darrell Evans.
- 9:09Evans, a strong home run threat in his own right.
- 9:15Evans has four hits, including a home run and four RBIs, so he's already been up to his old tricks.
- 9:22And of course out on deck, as they call him in Georgia, the Hammers.
- 9:26And it's up to Darrell Evans now to extend the inning.
- 9:29Oh, that's a waste for inning number two to see Henry.
- 9:33Downing into the windup.
- 9:35They have a modified shift on Evans.
- 9:37If Browns won the Wolfe, he's up with it, and we won't see Henry till next inning.
- 9:41And the tension will not just a little bit longer.
- 9:43So the Braves are gone on Brown balls, and at the end of an inning, no score.
- 9:49Now we go to the second inning here in Atlanta just to complicate matters
- 9:53and to increase some pressure on the senior umpire, Ed Seudahl.
- 9:58A light rain begins to fall.
- 10:02We're not sure of the up-to-the-minute weather forecast.
- 10:06They talked about first tornadoes, then they rose out two hours ago.
- 10:11Then they talked about possible showers.
- 10:14And then finally they were saying it looks like we'll be all right.
- 10:17So it could be that we're just getting the edge of a storm, which has gone by this area.
- 10:24Joe Ferguson is followed by Willie Crawford and Ron Say, and Ron Reid delivers.
- 10:29That's four for Sykes.
- 10:32Well, if you possibly can, don't go wandering off now,
- 10:35because Henry Aaron is due to lead off the second inning.
- 10:39Here's the strike one pitch. That's in there for Sykes, oh, and two.
- 10:43How would you like to be caught on a hot dog line?
- 10:46I wonder if anybody would dare go to the confession stand between now and Aaron's time.
- 10:52Here comes a strike two pitch outside for one, one and two.
- 10:57The raindrops causing the well-prepared crowd to put on raincoats and opening up umbrellas.
- 11:05Here's the one and two pitch hung on a mission down north Ferguson.
- 11:12So Ron Reid strikes out his second, and the batter is Willie Crawford.
- 11:21Willie Crawford comes into the game hitting 400.
- 11:26What a marvelous thrill it must be for Mr. and Mrs. Herbert and Henry's mom and dad up from Mobile,
- 11:33sitting in the club box, waiting for their son to break an all-time record,
- 11:39the pitch world ball one, one and all.
- 11:42There's a vast difference, however, between the two men involved, Dave Ruth and Henry Aaron.
- 11:48If you're old enough, you might remember during World War II,
- 11:51there were stories coming out of the South Pacific that the Japanese infantry,
- 11:56trying to find out where the American emplacements were, figured out what could we do
- 12:01to get the Americans angry enough to holler back and then we'd know where they are.
- 12:07So did they touch? They touched Bay Blues.
- 12:10Boy, you really have to be something when you have a reputation for greatness.
- 12:15Here's a down ball that Charlotte and Crawford have gone through away.
- 12:18Let's pause quickly for station identification.
- 12:21This is the Los Angeles Dodgers radio network.
- 12:23Down, second inning, no score.
- 12:25Henry Aaron is due up first and the bottom of the second.
- 12:28They beat the tile into the dirt and the gout on one.
- 12:34It is barely a rain, a light mist would be more like it.
- 12:38A very strong wind blowing out to right, but the ballpark is completely enclosed
- 12:44and the wind should not be a factor.
- 12:46The pitch to say, slider outside, one ball and one site.
- 12:51Jim Gilliam coaching it first.
- 12:54Tommy LaShaw it over third.
- 12:58Ron Reed ready and the 1-1 pitch on the way.
- 13:01And the inside corner for site, one and two.
- 13:07The wind swirling the bunting draped along the railing going down the right field foul line.
- 13:14Here's the 1-2 pitch to say, hung on, hit off the back of Reed, deflected to learn who stepped on the bag.
- 13:24And it also took his sack as he turned around in his follow through and the play goes 1-3.
- 13:32And don't you know it's waiting hard now.
- 13:35What an ironic twist.
- 13:37And at the end of an inning and a half, no score.
- 13:43Bottom of the second inning, no score in the ballgame.
- 13:46In a light rain in Atlanta, the senior umpire, Eddie Soutar, has huddled with the umpires
- 13:52swinging two bats, waiting his first, who knows how many dramatic that's got, to Henry Aaron.
- 14:01Aaron is standing a good 30 feet away from the home plate while Al Downing makes his warmup starters.
- 14:07The crowd of course begins to look for us as Henry takes his shot and then another.
- 14:12And as he begins to walk up the home plate, the crowd gives him a standing ovation.
- 14:18He throws the shot, practice round that away, and the perlillion number 44 checks into the batting box
- 14:26to a standing ovation here in Atlanta.
- 14:29Joe Ferguson, now son, but leaned over and evidently said something.
- 14:34And Al Downing, who also is 44, who sat on the bench when Roger Maris both debuted one year
- 14:42much at 51 in all runs, now Downing slips down Aaron's bat.
- 14:49Al ready and delivers and the first one is outside for one.
- 14:53We told you before, every time Downing will miss, the bat will move.
- 14:59Al checking and Ferguson, wigwagging a few times out, the one-hole pitch to Aaron is taken for a fight.
- 15:06Outside corner and the knee is one and one.
- 15:12Henry has two all-runs against Downing last year, in April in Los Angeles, later on here.
- 15:20Downing splitting into the raindrops and the one-one pitch to Aaron is bounced in front of the plate.
- 15:27There the crowd now flies the budget.
- 15:30For Downing, he doesn't want to walk, Aaron, he doesn't want anybody to find the abusing fingers.
- 15:37He's just not a pitch he's gained.
- 15:40Dave Davidson trying his best he can to concentrate on the strike zone.
- 15:46And there's Henry all the while, focus face, bumping that word back and forth.
- 15:51Two runs, that ball is low.
- 15:53Al ready.
- 15:57Aaron I'm sure is hitting at all times, whether the count be two and oh, three and oh, three and one.
- 16:04Downing checking, Aaron waiting and the three-one pitch is outside for one.
- 16:11And not right now, Henry, and he's got the first place.
- 16:18The land is lost and the batter will be the Santa Fealter, right-hand batter, Gusty Baker.
- 16:32Gusty Baker comes into the game hitting two-thirty-one, right-hand hitting Santa Fealter, good running speed, good power, had a fine year for Atlanta last season.
- 16:45Al be holding the bag on Aaron who takes his lead, making a waiting of the plate and downing deals and gets the site.
- 16:52They have heralded Henry Aaron up to the X-ray light.
- 16:56They have written everything imaginable and have shared everything imaginable about him.
- 17:01They've even published a 40-page supplement to the local newspapers to tell about Aaron.
- 17:07And the press kit is immense, all about Aaron, the pitch to Baker outside.
- 17:13And Jerry was reading it a little before and spotted a note about Aaron the baseliner way back in his Jacksonville days.
- 17:21And on a great night, it might not be bad for your melody sake to point it out, a high chopper headed ahead of Ron Say in the left field for a hit.
- 17:30Aaron goes to guard before the right-footer and Henry Aaron scores the first of Baker and they get him.
- 17:41Jesse Baker, a head-first guy, is shaken up.
- 17:46And Baker gets up very slowly and almost broadly as he hits the bag hard.
- 17:52He'll get a base hit, Buster will go on error, and Aaron will run short and it's one for nothing in Atlanta.
- 17:59No run batted in, of course.
- 18:13Anyway, when I was just a kid in Jacksonville in his third year in professional baseball,
- 18:20they tell a story about the game he played where three times during the game he stole second base.
- 18:28The pitch to Davey Johnson is foul and the count's 0-1.
- 18:32Well, what makes it a memorable story is each time a young Henry Aaron stole second base
- 18:38and each time the second baseman pulled a hidden ball trick on him and tagged him out.
- 18:45He's had a lot of memorable days. It has to be a forgettable one for jurors.
- 18:49The pitch to Davey Johnson outside, one ball and one strike.
- 18:56One and one. The count's to Davey Johnson.
- 18:59Now downing back to the plate and it's lifted into center field.
- 19:03Coming up is Jimmy Winn, still covering and makes the catch.
- 19:07A little fly ball to center, two down, and that'll bring up the catcher, Vic Perrell,
- 19:12who joined the break from the Boston Red Sox at the start of the season.
- 19:18He played at Fort Nugget last year. He makes his home in Georgia.
- 19:23Joe Ferguson holds his hands and arms apart and then brings them together
- 19:27as if he's playing an imaginary accordion, and that's what he wants.
- 19:32And Jimmy Winn is waved slightly over towards right center,
- 19:36and then Ferguson holds his hands up and says, that's fine.
- 19:41Downing, checking with Fergie, into the windup, works the plate, and he bounces.
- 19:47One and one.
- 19:54Rainy night in Georgia, but that is only four potatoes concerned with the entrée,
- 20:01and that is Mr. Henry Arn.
- 20:03The one hole pitch is low, ball two.
- 20:06No clues when you miss the strike zone to Vic Perrell,
- 20:10but when you miss the strike zone to Henry Arn, it tears the skies down.
- 20:16Braves leading one to nothing in the second inning of Jam-packed House.
- 20:21Now the two-hole pitch on the way is the ramble sharply,
- 20:26speared by Russell, a full turn, he throws him out.
- 20:30Excellent play by Bill to get Perrell.
- 20:33One run, one hit, one error.
- 20:36Nobody left, and at the end of two Braves, one Dodger's nothing.
- 20:40We can dug in a couple of scores quickly.
- 20:42The Giants kept the door, and they knocked off Cincinnati today, four to three.
- 20:46The Aquisto beat Nelson, Redmond, and Maddox all runs.
- 20:50And numerically, they were just one game scheduled.
- 20:52The Yankees beat Cleveland, five to three.
- 20:55So we're all alone tonight, and rightfully so, as Henry Arn is one away from making Babe Ruth's record.
- 21:03He needs one, and boy, I don't know what they're going to do here after the great free game show.
- 21:09I don't know what they can possibly do if and when he hits it.
- 21:12Let's go to the third, one nothing and a lot of foreplay by play.
- 21:15Here's Jerry Doggett.
- 21:16All right, Benin, Steve Garvey steps in, Ron Reid delivers, and Steve swings, and looks at strike one.
- 21:22Reid looks to be keyed up for the ball game tonight, and of course, the big crowd,
- 21:26and the fact that this is a big night for the Atlanta Braves,
- 21:30and Reid seems to be really psyched up so far.
- 21:33It's a high-bouncing ball to third, Evans waits for a hop, a pivot on the grass.
- 21:37Three, three.
- 21:39Garvey keeps it out as Darrell waited for the ball, and then had to re-grip it,
- 21:45and he's too late with it, and Garvey lakes it out.
- 21:48So the Dodgers get their first hit of the game, an infield single, and here is Bill Russell.
- 21:53Made a fine play on Corral to close out the second inning.
- 21:57The run that the Braves have is unearned, as the Dodgers had an error by Buckner on the play.
- 22:03Not allowed in to score, he would not have scored on the foul ball by Johnson,
- 22:07if he had stayed at third base.
- 22:10In fact, he would not have gone to third, had Buckner not fouled the ball.
- 22:14Here's the pitch coming in low with ball one.
- 22:16Russell backs out now, has a look at third base, Coach Tommy Losurda.
- 22:21Al Downing is out on deck.
- 22:23A two-weaving in Georgia.
- 22:26No rain at the moment.
- 22:28The pitch comes in two, low ball two, that's two balls and no strikes.
- 22:32This might be the biggest crowd we've seen in this ballpark.
- 22:36The Dodgers back in the Copac days, when Atlanta first came into the league, had some big crowds.
- 22:44Now the 2-0 pitch, taking first strike.
- 22:47Two and one to Russell with Downing on deck and Lopes to follow.
- 22:50The Braves lead one to nothing.
- 22:52The Dodgers covered the Braves last year 15 out of 17 times.
- 22:57Atlanta won one and lost two in Cincinnati.
- 23:00The Braves played a little bit of one-on-one three games.
- 23:03Here's a curve ball and a par ball in the right center field.
- 23:06Lorell up going for it.
- 23:07Dyer and Besson still going and Dyer can't get it.
- 23:10He backs his other ball.
- 23:12Here is Tommy going to third.
- 23:14Russell drops a second base on a long double to right field.
- 23:18So Russell gets one up in the booth and drives it over Dyer's head in the right field.
- 23:24Baker tried to catch up with it.
- 23:26He couldn't get to it.
- 23:27Garvey had to wait to see if the ball would be caught.
- 23:30And when it dropped, he came on to third and had to stop there.
- 23:34So the Dodgers have a drop, a single and a double, and Al Downing will be the batter.
- 23:40So for Russell, a two-base hit.
- 23:42Still came into the game hitting.364.
- 23:47Here's Al Downing stepping in now.
- 23:52Al, right hand batter up in the pitch for Reid. A swing and a miss strike.
- 23:57Where does he got a breaking grip?
- 23:58Davy Nicks on deck and Bill Buster to follow.
- 24:03Downing the batter's box, waiting now.
- 24:06Ron Reid checking signs once more.
- 24:10Stretch from the look on the pitch to Al.
- 24:12Oh, and a miss strike too.
- 24:21Al is a hitter, hit 135 in the National League, and 0.88 last year he had three RBIs.
- 24:30There's a swing and a foul off to the right out of play, and the count is still strike two to Downing.
- 24:39Al had five hits, still the more doubles.
- 24:43His lifetime average is 129, 135 in the National League.
- 24:49And now to the counter, Al, runners on his second and third.
- 24:52As Alon Jogs, very good to set a field.
- 24:54That'll get one in. Russell started back to the bag, and now he'll have to stop at third.
- 24:59It looks for a moment like the shortstop Robinson might have a play.
- 25:03So rather than get caught in a dummy play, Russell broke back toward the bag, and then was able to come only to third.
- 25:10But the Dodgers get caught up on Downing, Al's a single to center, and the ball game is all even.
- 25:15Runners on his first and third, and the batter now will be Davey Lope.
- 25:20So Al Downing helps himself with a single into better field, and the rain is beginning to come some more.
- 25:28Boy, the rain has been starting and stopping here consistently, and we had a real downpour about three hours before the game.
- 25:36Right now, Downing gets the windbreaker on, waiting for Davey Lope.
- 25:41He has a towel in his hand off to the right, wiping off the bat.
- 25:50And the pops open the umbrellas. It's a wet night in Georgia.
- 25:57Here's Davey Lope's attack. Davey's struck out, first time up.
- 26:00Nobody out, the Dodgers have runners out at the corners.
- 26:03The pitch on the lane, Davey takes high from Reed ball one.
- 26:06One of all to count. That'll be a shame for the rain tomorrow, this festival occasion.
- 26:12A huge crowd, one of the biggest in the Braves' history.
- 26:17It's the Davey ground ball to third, and they'll go to the first to try to get Russell in a run down, and he's tagged out.
- 26:24Russell's broke for home, and instead of going for the double play, Evans went for the front runner and gets it.
- 26:30Lope is on first, Downing is on second, Russell is out from third base to the catcher.
- 26:37One away, and the batter will be Buckner.
- 26:40It's surprising at this stage of the game that Evans didn't go for the double play,
- 26:44but he figured that he would better get the runner to the ice, and that's what he did.
- 26:48All right, here's Buckner at bat, Billy grounded out, his first time up.
- 26:52Down call now by Mike Lom, the first baseman.
- 27:00Lom is checking something with Reed, call time, and he wanted to keep the paper.
- 27:05Flying around in the outfield. All right, there's a whole bunch of it in left field.
- 27:10Here's the pitch on the way to Buckner. Wow, a third out of play.
- 27:14All games had one run third inning, Downing on second base, and Dainty Lope's on it first.
- 27:22The Dodgers are perfect three in our opening this season against San Diego.
- 27:25The Padres will entertain Houston tomorrow night in their home opener in San Diego.
- 27:29Strike one count, the Dursals still with us. Here's the pitch.
- 27:33Fast one is away, and it's a ball one strike one now to Billy Buckner.
- 27:37Buckner's hitting 222, he has only two hits and nine at bats so far in the year, and one run batted in.
- 27:43The wind is blowing from left toward right and it's at a pretty good clip.
- 27:47Now the pitch pops up foul, our third, third to a parry.
- 27:51There, Lom comes through the coaching lines, he's there and he has it.
- 27:55So Buckner pops up foul to third baseman Evans, and Jimmy Winn will come on now.
- 28:03Winn pops up to first baseman Lom his first time up.
- 28:06Jimmy has a great start, seven hits, seven RBI, three home runs,
- 28:12and he's hitting 538. A win off to a great, great start.
- 28:18Now our drop, runners at first and second, ball game is even at one run.
- 28:24Ron Reid ready to pitch to Winn, half swing, checked up, ball won.
- 28:29Well Winn has really gotten off to a good start for the Dodgers.
- 28:33This is the first of a four game series in Atlanta.
- 28:37Paper again blowing across the infield, curve is low and it's well too.
- 28:43There are big pieces of paper in the outfield as if they were parts of newspapers.
- 28:47In the infield, the plastic wrappers from the hot dogs or the sandwiches.
- 28:52Two-oh count, now again the look and the pitch to Winn.
- 28:56Round walk, pass third, round the left of the line, drink this.
- 28:59Here comes Downing to score, here comes Winn to round three, he's headed home.
- 29:03Here's the radar coming in a flick, he would be safe at home on a double by Jimmy Winn down the left field line.
- 29:10The Dodgers lead three to one and Jimmy Winn is driven in two more runs.
- 29:14Nine on the year as he doubles down the left field line.
- 29:18So Winn, a two base hit, drives in Downing and Lopes and the Dodgers are in front three to one.
- 29:27Jimmy Winn is really having a blazing start to his year.
- 29:34The Dodgers acquired Winn hoping he would knock in runs.
- 29:37Boy he's at nine now in four games.
- 29:39Here's Ferguson at bat.
- 29:45Winn edges off second, redelivered to Fergie and swinging the foul back, strike one.
- 29:54Jimmy Winn wraps Winn just down the left field line.
- 29:58Standing away from second base, Ferguson waiting, Joe hitting 300 on the year, three for ten with one RBI.
- 30:06Back foul is in for a strike and the count goes four and two to Ferguson.
- 30:11And on deck is Willie Crawford.
- 30:15Grabbing in, still hit, Russell a double to right, Downing a single to center and now Winn a double to left.
- 30:22Three to Fergie, half swing strike, all on the side is required.
- 30:27Ferguson is out on strike for the second time tonight.
- 30:30That is the third strikeout for Winn, but the Dodgers go three runs on four hits.
- 30:36And Winn won the surety and the two and a half in is a boy.
- 30:41Dodgers three and Atlanta one.
- 30:44Henry Irons has not hit the long run tonight, but he has set another National League record.
- 30:50He has just scored his 2063rd run, which gives him one more than Willie Mays
- 30:56and puts his third on the all-time list behind as Dikos and Babe Ruthen runs sports.
- 31:02Henry's name is in a lot of places in the record books, gets one more now,
- 31:08as he sets a new National League record for runs sports in a career, 2063.
- 31:17The shortstop, Craig Robinson, followed by Ron Reed and then by Ralph Giles,
- 31:21who go the far in the last half of the third inning.
- 31:24The Dodgers and the Atlanta Braves from Atlanta, Georgia on a damp evening,
- 31:29so they keep one eye on the weather.
- 31:32And it's just a light mist coming down now.
- 31:36By Dyle Downing leading by three to one, ready to go to work for the shortstop, Craig Robinson.
- 31:42Robinson last year with Philadelphia hit 276.
- 31:46Unless they have written down the numbers wrong.
- 31:52Here's the pitch on the way to Robinson, a bouncer foul off to the left, and the count goes strike one.
- 31:58On one to count.
- 32:01He hit 276 at Eugene and 226 at Philadelphia.
- 32:09Strike one's count with a little shortstop.
- 32:11He's turned a nudge, Marty Perez, out of the job on the Braves infield.
- 32:15Now Downing ready, out of the livers.
- 32:17Breaking ball outside, all the way to the backstop, it's got by Ferguson.
- 32:21One ball, one strike to count.
- 32:25The Dodgers just beginning a long road trip, four here, three in Houston, two in Cincinnati,
- 32:31and then back home with the Giants on the 19th of the week from Friday.
- 32:34Here's the one-one pitch on the way.
- 32:36Back ball strikes, and it is one and two.
- 32:40Under all, two strikes to Robinson, batting eight from the order.
- 32:45Three to one, the Dodgers lead, over the Braves here.
- 32:49The paint drop foul, but the plate and the count is still a ball and two strikes.
- 33:10Now ready, Downing checking.
- 33:16And then the windup he goes, and the pitch, half-plane, he checks in time, and it's two and two.
- 33:21A huge crowd here in Atlanta.
- 33:23The Dodgers are involved in some of the top crowds in Atlanta,
- 33:27in fact the first and second largest and the fifth largest crowd.
- 33:32So the Dodgers play here.
- 33:35The top of all three, three and two.
- 33:38In August of 1966, the Dodgers and the Braves played the 52,270.
- 33:46In June of that same year, they had played the 51,275.
- 33:52Here's the pitch, fair or high, and on with the walk of Robinson as wind comes up.
- 33:58First walk from Downing, also in 1966.
- 34:02On June the 25th, the Dodgers and the Braves played the 47,246.
- 34:09On June 25th, 47,000.
- 34:12On June 26th, 51,000.
- 34:14And on June, August the 9th, 52,000.
- 34:18Somebody had floated an umbrella on the field in right field.
- 34:22And it apparently got away.
- 34:23Willie Crawford had a lot to retrieve it.
- 34:25And his umbrella came flying out of the sand.
- 34:38So the training capacity is around 53,000, between 52 and 53.
- 34:42We don't have the exact number.
- 34:45The Dodgers have the high total.
- 34:47Here's a tough foul by Reid back into the strange strike one.
- 34:52They had announced the foul out prior to the game, but we can see a few vagant seats upstairs.
- 34:57So maybe those folks are going outside to get away from the raindrops.
- 35:02Runner at it first.
- 35:03The Braves got a run in the second.
- 35:04The Dodgers picked up three, and they're half of the third.
- 35:07Three to one Dodgers over the Braves here in the third inning.
- 35:11Now Downing working.
- 35:12Reid at bat.
- 35:13Say you hit on the grass.
- 35:15Yeah, he breaks through the plate.
- 35:16The pitch is horrible for a ball on the count of one to one.
- 35:18Reid was around to butt it again.
- 35:37Going to first.
- 35:38They got it.
- 35:40Dave Robinson picks off first on a touch through foul by Downing, and he's caught off of that.
- 35:48So Robinson's caught leaning all the way, and he's picked up.
- 35:51And now Downing can go to work on Reid here in the third inning.
- 35:57By Ron Reid, waiting at the plate to butt his off now.
- 36:01One ball, one strike, and one man out.
- 36:04As Downing gets up to go with it again.
- 36:08And from the pitch on the way, breaking ball outside.
- 36:11Ball two and it's two and one.
- 36:16The writers and the Dodgers from all over the world are here.
- 36:21Right here, Reid is down.
- 36:22There are some people from Japan, from Soraka, Venezuela.
- 36:26It's all over the United States.
- 36:28Reid's swinging to the point there, and misses strike two.
- 36:30It's a two and two count.
- 36:33The report was that there are somewhere between two and three hundred accredited reporters.
- 36:41And I don't know whether that includes photographers or not, but they have those special photographers boxes down on the field.
- 36:48And of course, every looking penny up here is a cover.
- 36:51The play on this, Reid strikes out.
- 36:54That's the first strikeout for Al Downing tonight.
- 36:58So the right field way and Ralph Gile will be the batter.
- 37:03Bounce out and loose time up.
- 37:06Here's Ralph Gile, the roadrunner, stepping in.
- 37:19Al Downing poised on the mound, into the windup and the pitch on the way.
- 37:23Inside the ball, one and all.
- 37:26Downing walked in on the first time around.
- 37:28We asked Al on the free game show what he would do, how he would respond to the blues of the card.
- 37:34And of course, there were many when he walked in.
- 37:36He said, I don't know what's going on, but if you're going to let this go and then not see it,
- 37:41now is our first day free.
- 37:42I'll tell you if one gets away.
- 37:45Well, that brings up my book.
- 37:48Anyway, Downing was saying that he would not, of course, walk around frankly and speak.
- 37:59And he would feel that he knew that he was trying to put to it carefully.
- 38:03And if they blew it up a little bit, he knew better than later about what he was trying to do.
- 38:07We asked him how he would feel if he was going to do that with an intentional pass here in the situation of warning.
- 38:15I was not happy, but I was, of course, but I really found that he was a good player.
- 38:20Here's one about the pitch.
- 38:22Breaking down as a start down one.
- 38:25Dying it when the right group player was coming up on the graph and Ronnie didn't get the defense on,
- 38:31so he starts with the second half of the game for the Dodgers.
- 38:35All right.
- 38:36Two outs, one on, and a pitch.
- 38:38Breaking ball, strike two.
- 38:46The Dodgers last year twice lost their 11s to get their Aaron,
- 38:51and one and two Aaron beat them a game, and the other they got to buy with it and got him up.
- 38:56They lost those two games to the Braves all last year, one of those in overtime here.
- 39:01They were pulling it right through, and down goes one with five to three ties.
- 39:05Downing gets them out.
- 39:08No runs, no hits, an error, and a man lost in the score at the end of three.
- 39:13The Dodgers three with the Atlanta Braves something.
- 39:18All right, the Dodgers coming on.
- 39:19It gets Ron Reeves leading three to one.
- 39:21More flavor spinning.
- 39:22All right, Jay.
- 39:24Willie Crawford will start it off.
- 39:25He'll be followed by Ron Say and then Steve Garvey,
- 39:29and Henry Ann will bat second in the bottom of the fourth inning.
- 39:33It is cold, it is windy, and it is rainy,
- 39:38but the excitement of the moment has kept the crowd right here.
- 39:44Ron Reeves looks in to get his tie, and Crawford waiting in the big right-hander's pitch outside four to one.
- 39:50Henry Ann scored the run for the Braves in the second inning.
- 39:54The Dodgers came back with three.
- 39:57One and all to count to Willie Crawford.
- 40:00Reeves delivers, and he's high this time, all through.
- 40:03Ron went to school at Notre Dame.
- 40:05Nine basketball players who played some basketball professionally with the Detroit Fishman.
- 40:10The nine are elected to stay with baseball, and it's been a happy choice for him and for the Braves.
- 40:16Reeves' next one to Crawford is low.
- 40:18That makes it three and all.
- 40:24You know, the Dodgers are going to get a formal protest, I think, not about this game.
- 40:30Here's a three-all pitch, and Crawford takes his strike three and one.
- 40:35The Dodger uniform on the front, under the script Dodgers, is the player's number.
- 40:41Downing's number is a very bright 44.
- 40:45The three-one pitch is on the corner, strike two.
- 40:49Reeves and Eddie Matthews in particular have complained about the shininess of the numbers on the Dodgers' chest,
- 40:59saying particularly that it distracts the hitter trying to find the ball when the pitcher delivers.
- 41:03That ball is hung on a mission down in North Carolina.
- 41:06That's the station identification.
- 41:08This is the Los Angeles Dodgers Radio Network.
- 41:11This is the American Forgiveness Radio and Television Service.
- 41:25One hour here on the floor of the inning for the Dodgers leading Atlanta 3-1,
- 41:30and now what all of us have dreaded is taking place, a couple of kids.
- 41:35And they're not, when I say kids, I don't mean children, come out on the field to shake Aaron's hand,
- 41:42and now they go up the field.
- 41:45So time out for the moment.
- 41:49Three runs earlier than two hours for the Dodgers, one run, one hit, and no errors for the Braves.
- 41:59And play at the plate.
- 42:03Ron Reed checking his toucher, Vic Burrell, in the crowd.
- 42:07Larm and Johnson, Robinson and Edinsonian Field.
- 42:11And today, fouls are back out of play.
- 42:13In the outfield, Henry Aaron and Lef, Dusty Baker and Santa Ralph, Gar and Rice.
- 42:19It is the first game of a fuller game series.
- 42:22We had a half hour pregame show honoring Aaron.
- 42:30And now we're in the fourth inning. Reed delivers, and Faye hits a high fly ball to the right field.
- 42:37Coming up is Gar, and he has to back up a little, and behind him comes Dusty Baker to make the catch.
- 42:43Reed throwing out the right field is evidently strong enough to affect the towering fly ball,
- 42:49and so Baker went behind Gar to handle it.
- 42:52And the batter is Steve Garvey.
- 43:03Garvey had an infield single in the third inning. He outlegged a throw from Darrell Evans.
- 43:09That eventually came around to score.
- 43:11A change is lifted over first base, slicing foul Larmond.
- 43:15Good play by Mike Lums. The Dodgers are gone in order and score at the end of the three and a half inning.
- 43:24The Dodgers three braves one.
- 43:28Bottom of the fourth inning with the Dodgers leading at ladder three to one,
- 43:32and the crowd again, especially alive because Aaron is coming up.
- 43:37It'll be Darrell Evans to start things, then Henry Aaron, and then Dusty Baker.
- 43:48Darrell Evans grounded out in the first inning. He's 0-1.
- 44:01Now downing to a little housekeeping out there on the mound as we retrieve some paper.
- 44:05Because of the wind, my paper's swirling out of the stands,
- 44:09and we have several pieces of paper out on the field right now, but here we go.
- 44:14Downing into the windup, and the pitch to Darrell Evans is low, 0-1.
- 44:19And Aaron walks in the second inning.
- 44:23It will be interesting when he comes up again how the crowd will react if downing misses the strike zone.
- 44:29He misses again to Evans ball two, 2-0.
- 44:33Downing has walked two, and he has struck out two.
- 44:41The Dodgers lead three to one in the fourth inning.
- 44:45Darrell Evans back up to the plate.
- 44:47Downing checks his signs, now to the windup, and the two half pitch on the way is a ground ball behind second.
- 44:54That's where recreation slips Mr. Thraws to right.
- 45:01Because of the lane, Ruffer was positioned to feel the ball, and he slipped on the wet grass.
- 45:08He has gone a draw now, and once again a standing ovation for Henry Allen.
- 45:25There's a confrontation for the second time.
- 45:28Aaron walked in the second inning.
- 45:31He needs a fine runner to play now, but we'll see what downing does.
- 45:35Now it's a pass delivered, and he's low, 0-1.
- 45:39The Dodgers hold to the pressure.
- 45:42The crowd's booing.
- 45:44Downing has to ignore the sound effects and stay up with that showing pitch again.
- 45:52One ball and no strikes, Aaron waiting to help you beat him straight away.
- 45:56That's the only high drive to beat that runner until he's swept and goes back to the stands.
- 46:02And there he is, down.
- 46:310-1.
- 48:01What a marvelous moment for baseball.
- 48:04What a marvelous moment for Atlanta and the state of Georgia.
- 48:08What a marvelous moment for the country and the world.
- 48:12A black man is getting a standing ovation in the deep south for breaking a record of an all-time baseball idol.
- 48:21And it is a great moment for all of us, and particularly for Henry Aaron.
- 48:27He was met at home plate not only by every member of the Braves, but by his father and mother.
- 48:35He threw his arms around his father, and as he left the home plate area, his mother came running across the grass,
- 48:43threw her arms around his neck, kissed him for all he was worth.
- 48:51And in the Aaron circle of bases, the Dodgers on the NCO shook his hand, and that was a memorable moment.
- 48:59Aaron is being mobbed by psychographers. He is holding his right hand high in the air, and for the first time in a long time,
- 49:08what broke your face of Aaron shows a tremendous strain and relief of what it must have been like to live with for the past several months.
- 49:19It is over. At ten minutes after nine, in Atlanta, Georgia, Henry Aaron has equipped some art sets by Babe Ruth.
- 49:31You could not, I guess, get two more comprehensive men, the Bays, big and gallant and also sociable,
- 49:42and also immense in all of his appetites. And then the quiet, loyal, and immobile Alabama,
- 49:51splendid and safe splendid throughout his career. Ruth, as he put on the poundies and the points,
- 49:58the Yankees put their ballplayers in pinstripe uniforms because it made Ruth look splendid.
- 50:07But they didn't need pinstripe uniforms for Henry Aaron in the twilight of his career.
- 50:12He looked almost the same as he did when he first came up 20 years ago.
- 50:19And so it was a memorable moment before the game, and now at a sweet moment, it is here in the middle of the game.
- 50:28Bill Bartholomew, the chairman of the board of the Atlanta Braves, is speaking over the PA system,
- 50:35and with the roar of the crowd, there's no way we can pick it up.
- 50:39Aaron has already received, among other things, tonight a $5,000 check for the Henry Aaron Scholarship Fund.
- 50:48So Henry and the Babe, the two greatest home run hitters that have ever lived,
- 50:54and it's a marvelous, wonderful, enjoyable moment here in Atlanta.
- 51:00I'm so happy, too, that it could be seen all over the United States, that it will be duly reported all around the world.
- 51:07And I'm sure films of it will be seen around the world, and you can hear it, Georgia, around the world.
- 51:14Henry Aaron is now at the microphone.
- 51:35The technical difficulty here in this vast ballpark was for that us from picking it up.
- 51:45Henry, blow up, I say. I thank God it's all over with.
- 51:52But I'm sure he has thanked God many times that he had to do it to get it all over with,
- 52:00and he becomes the greatest home run hitter in the history of baseball.
- 52:06April 8, 1974, one of the greatest and not the greatest moments in recorded sports history,
- 52:15Henry Aaron scored the first run of the game, and then hit the two-run home run to tie it up.
- 52:24We're all even 3-3 in the fourth. There's still a lot of this game left. There'll be more at bat found.
- 52:31The Dodger in field, standing around with Joe Ferguson. The outfield, also, except for Jimmy Wynn.
- 52:40The field in the background, directed by Commissioner Bowie Kuhn, and I'm sure if you have been following baseball and Aaron and the Braves lineup,
- 52:55you are aware of the fact that the Commissioner wanted Aaron to play, and of course, his name is Anathema here in Georgia.
- 53:04When the Anathema was made, the Commissioner is sorry he couldn't be here, why that Anathema was meant with a tremendous amount of booze.
- 53:13Henry Aaron was born February 5th. Babe Ruth was also born February 4th or 5th, I believe,
- 53:20so that would make them Aquarians in the age of Aquarius.
- 53:24And Aaron, one war number three, one war 44. One was a left-handed batter, one was a right-handed batter,
- 53:34and evidently, from what we have heard of one and what we have known of the other, they were as different as black and white.
- 53:47Aaron is now gone back into the dugout with all of his teammates. Here on the fourth inning, Darrell Evans hit a ground ball.
- 53:58Russell flipped on the wet grass and could not make a play. He was charged with an error, and then Henry Aaron hit it out,
- 54:05and it was a merciless wallop, or even better, tonight, it was a Ruthian wallop.
- 54:12It sailed out just to the right of the 385 sign, and he really had it through it to hit it out in the rain
- 54:21and with a crosswind blowing from left to right. And there, as Aaron said, it's over.
- 54:28He said, thank God it's over for all of us. We have our own blessings. We feel fortunate just to have been here to see the man do it.
- 54:40And on the message board, another nice thought, that George Herman Ruth also shares this great moment with all of us tonight,
- 54:48because it was Ruth who set the standards of 7-14, and he made the great chase possible.
- 54:55And so here in Georgia, they salute the boy from Baltimore, Maryland, George Herman Ruth.
- 55:01At the bottom, after the tribute to Aaron, it says, hail to the Bayes. A memorable evening in Atlanta, Georgia.
- 55:09A 3-3 tie, and Aaron has done it, and now Downing is loosening up to Joe Ferguson.
- 55:20What an evening, as we said earlier, what a great moment for all of us.
- 55:26It worked out well, don't you think?
- 55:31Downing is loosening up on a pregame show, trying to cover all the angles. Jerry had said, Downing, what will you do if Aaron hits that big home run against you?
- 55:43And here's what Al said.
- 55:46You're on the mound, you make a good pitch, and there it goes, with the 7-14. The crowd cheers, everybody goes crazy. What is Al Downing up to? What are you going to think about?
- 56:02He wouldn't be sad, and he wouldn't be happy, I guess.
- 56:17He's been going so far, and he's going to tremendous job as far as I'm concerned, he's going to tremendous job as 8-4 points up, and when he's 7-15, he's going to deserve it.
- 56:32Well, he deserved it, all right? He didn't beat him, but he certainly cried out, Downing.
- 56:36Downing was nobody out. Al Downing now out of the dugout, back on the mound, and loosening up.
- 56:47Well, I can get so choked up on one thing. It was an Aaron's home run, we've sure seen enough of those, and it wasn't even the dog in field shaking his hand as he went by.
- 56:58That's got to be one for the book, before when his mom and dad met him at home. Boy, look out. That was really something.
- 57:08I mean, his dad hardly made any money at all in Mobile, Alabama, when he was a little kid growing up, and now all of a sudden, there they are.
- 57:18Henry was the third child of eight born to Mr. and Mrs. Hergadon in 1934 in Mobile, Alabama, a black family.
- 57:29You know they didn't have very much, and now, indeed, I'm sure the tough has run aground.
- 57:36And now as yours do, the world takes another turn, and life moves on. It's 3-3, and the batter is Dusty Baker, and the crowd is decided to help with joy.
- 57:46They can take that side, 4-1. They had a half-hour pregame ceremony, actually only a 10-minute interruption when he knocked it.
- 57:56The 1-0 pitch to Dusty, high ball through to an hour.
- 58:04715 home runs for Henry on, and he did it again for Dodgers here in Atlanta on April 8.
- 58:14The 2-0 pitch is high, ball 3-3, you know.
- 58:24Downing, leading Ferguson into the windup, and the 3-0 pitch, high ball forward.
- 58:31So a 3-3 tie in the fourth inning, and the batter would be J.B. Johnson, who applied to center in the second inning.
- 58:52Johnson, right-hander, and a home run threat to Zalma, with Baker at first, held on by Garvey.
- 58:583-3 tie in the fourth.
- 59:03Downing, ready, and delivers, and the breaking ball is low, ball 1.
- 59:16Johnson backed out for a moment, checking with Connie Ryan, now he's back up to the plate.
- 59:23One ball and no strikes, and Downing delivers, and it's flung on and fouled away, 1-1.
- 59:32There used to be an expression many years ago, in fact it might even have been a song, the Eagles, they fly high in Mobile.
- 59:41Boy, they gotta be flying high in Mobile tonight, for the home of Henry on, for at least his birthplace.
- 59:481-1, the count to J.B. Johnson.
- 59:53Downing delivers, and it's grounded foul outside of third, and the count's 1-2.
- 1:00:061-2 to J.B.
- 1:00:08Ready? Johnson waiting.
- 1:00:16Rick Correll, on deck, nine-court by Eddie Soudal, with a second baseman on fire.
- 1:00:23They want something picked up from behind the home plate area.
- 1:00:291-2.
- 1:00:30Downing looks over at Dusty Baker, works the plate, and he's lowing inside.
- 1:00:40He is not sharp, he's struggling a bit, and Mike Marshall, bare-armed as usual, is throwing in the Dodger bullpen.
- 1:00:493-3 tie, bottom of the fourth.
- 1:00:53Downing ready, and the left-hander's 2-2 pitch coming up.
- 1:00:59He bounced it, or a three.
- 1:01:02The Downing has walked through, and he was faker after the home run by Eddie.
- 1:01:10The official time of the home run was 9.07 p.m. in Atlanta.
- 1:01:179.07 in case you're here. 3-2 the count to J.B. Johnson.
- 1:01:23Nobody else will see what Baker does at first.
- 1:01:32Downing at the bell. Looks at Baker, he goes, the pitch is low, 4-4.
- 1:01:38The Downing is really fighting to stay in the ballgame now.
- 1:01:43Coming up is Vic Correll, the catcher, and going out to the mound is Walter Alston.
- 1:01:52Red Adams goes out to talk to a pitcher.
- 1:01:56Alston usually makes the change.
- 1:02:00Downing is anything but sharp.
- 1:02:02He might also be suffering some kind of an emotional letdown or reaction to the home run by Alston.
- 1:02:10But he has been a little wobbly, and they're going right to the bullpen.
- 1:02:15For Henry Aaron, it's a forgettable night and a memorable one at the same time.
- 1:02:20Because when they ask him years from now, what was it like the night that Henry Aaron hit the home run with a big spike?
- 1:02:29Downing will say, well, I'll tell you one thing.
- 1:02:32I pitched only two more batters and left them both when I was gone.
- 1:02:40So Downing standing on the mound, and Mike Marshall comes jogging in from the bullpen.
- 1:02:49Here in the inning, Kyle Evans is bored on the air, and Aaron really smacked one.
- 1:02:55It wasn't a fly ball home run, it just made it.
- 1:02:58He hit it to a deep part of the park and to deep left center field at the 385 part.
- 1:03:03That's the rest of Downing.
- 1:03:05And Mike Marshall takes over, and they give Downing a standing ovation,
- 1:03:10which is indeed a left-handed compliment, the fact that he gave it a battle and surrendered the home run.
- 1:03:18We'll never know, and Downing would never be able to tell us, but remember the first time Aaron came up, he walked.
- 1:03:34And the next time Aaron came up, with the crowd booing, the first pitch was 4-1.
- 1:03:40And somehow, maybe that triggered a reaction in Downing.
- 1:03:43I'm not going to walk him again, the next you know the big home run was this.
- 1:03:51A 3-3 tie.
- 1:03:54Mike Marshall has come up with a Humpty's uniform.
- 1:03:57That's the baseball way of describing it.
- 1:04:00He must have forgotten his shirt.
- 1:04:03He's wearing number 73, and that's a uniform that would be found on the bottom of a trunk
- 1:04:09on a bus ride from Vero Beach to Sarasota.
- 1:04:13So Mike comes in wearing 73, he couldn't care less.
- 1:04:18A 3-3 tie.
- 1:04:21First and second, nobody else, and Mike Marshall picked up.
- 1:04:25Jerry Levin did a lot of chattering about Aaron's home run in the big moment.
- 1:04:30I'm sure you have thoughts of your own about it.
- 1:04:33Well, one of the thoughts I had was of course that you were talking about the Dodger players taking his turn as he went around.
- 1:04:38And while the crowd was gathering at home place to wait for him as he got there,
- 1:04:42Steve Garry, who has been a great inspiration to a lot of young kids,
- 1:04:47and as it changed up I'm sure, I followed him somewhere,
- 1:04:51he stood there and he kind of helped leave the applause, just clapping his hands.
- 1:04:54I thought that was a little thing of size in the general picture there.
- 1:04:58What other thoughts?
- 1:05:00He flipped and we weren't neglectful in it.
- 1:05:02You might wonder about the ball.
- 1:05:04It never reached the sand.
- 1:05:06The brave were all it was retrieved, and when Aaron was 20 feet from home place,
- 1:05:11the ball was already in his possession.
- 1:05:14Marshall checked the runners, the fixed it to Raleigh, waved out a missed on one.
- 1:05:19I'm not sure who the brave player was because he had a windbreaker on and glasses.
- 1:05:23It might have been the film he grew up with.
- 1:05:25I don't think it was the Hops.
- 1:05:29Okay, time out.
- 1:05:32And as Aaron got home and jogged away, a member of the brave had the ball in hand and it threw him.
- 1:05:38And in a sense, that was good.
- 1:05:41Not that we want to deprive anybody of money if the ball was worth that much,
- 1:05:46but we were quite concerned about the possibility of near-riots,
- 1:05:51people fighting each other in the less field stands for what apparently is a valuable piece of merchandise.
- 1:05:57It never got to the stands and it saved, I think, a lot of possible injuries.
- 1:06:02The fixed it to Raleigh's low, one ball and one strike.
- 1:06:05Mike Marshall in the lead for Val Downing.
- 1:06:12A 3-3 tie on the fourth.
- 1:06:15Henry Aaron has done it.
- 1:06:17He hit a 2-run homer and a tie against Downing here in the fourth inning.
- 1:06:21And then, perhaps bothered by that, Val Downing, Warf Baker, and Johnson.
- 1:06:29Marshall to his stretch, checks the runnys and delivers.
- 1:06:32Fastball followed away.
- 1:06:34That carries upstairs behind the plate.
- 1:06:36One and two.
- 1:06:40Now for the third, it lands down below.
- 1:06:47It will be interesting as years go by that they're defending tonight
- 1:06:51and how many people will have claimed to have been here tonight.
- 1:06:56But there will be millions who have seen it on television
- 1:07:01and countless millions more on newscasts.
- 1:07:04The pitch is high ball two.
- 1:07:07In checking, just as their footnote, Tommy House was the one who gave it to Henry Aaron.
- 1:07:15Where they sure got that ball to him in a hurry.
- 1:07:20His arm was around his father and Tommy House had the ball.
- 1:07:26When he beat us, we caught a phone call.
- 1:07:28A couple of the Braves tried to pick him up, but they were two of the smaller Braves
- 1:07:34and they couldn't get him off the ground with all the crowd.
- 1:07:36So they finally gave it up as a tough assignment.
- 1:07:39Then Aaron walked away.
- 1:07:41Two and two, the count. Marshall ready and delivers.
- 1:07:45Very high ball three.
- 1:07:51Three and two, the count.
- 1:07:55Two on and nobody out. A three-three tie in the fourth inning.
- 1:08:13Mike Marshall checked in with Joe Ferguson.
- 1:08:17Now the right end is three-two fastball as it fouls outside of third.
- 1:08:22So it's tied again. Three-three in the fourth.
- 1:08:26A cool night in Atlanta. A pretty stiff breeze blowing out.
- 1:08:30The threat of a tornado was finally canceled.
- 1:08:33We've had some rain.
- 1:08:35And remember the ballgame is not official yet.
- 1:08:38It would be a terrible thing, but it's not.
- 1:08:42The roll is followed by Craig Robinson and then Ron Reese.
- 1:08:47Marshall checking, Mike deal fastball and a hit down the left.
- 1:08:52Russell drops it. Everybody's face, figure and stride.
- 1:08:56Johnson a second and holding it for Sorrell.
- 1:09:00I don't know where the Dodgers are taking up over Aaron's home run or what,
- 1:09:05but Russell dropped a perfect throw to start a double play.
- 1:09:09And the bases are loaded with nobody out.
- 1:09:17The bases are loaded and nobody out.
- 1:09:19Marshall did his job. He got a perfect double play ball.
- 1:09:24But instead the Dodgers could not negotiate it.
- 1:09:27So the bases are loaded with nobody out.
- 1:09:29Craig Robinson, the shortstop, got all the way to home plate
- 1:09:34and he's been pulled back to the dugout and that's a road trip here.
- 1:09:39And they're going to go for a hitter, I believe, to try and get out in front.
- 1:09:45Frank Cepedino, left-hand hitting first baseman who had been with the Yankees,
- 1:09:49who's going to come up in bat for Craig Robinson.
- 1:09:57So with the bases loaded and nobody out, the Dodgers blowing a big opportunity
- 1:10:02and now Eddie Matthews doesn't want to blow it,
- 1:10:05he'll send up a better hitter trying to catch it in.
- 1:10:17So Frank Cepedino, Cepedino did well against the Dodgers last year.
- 1:10:22He's all for one, started this young season.
- 1:10:26Three-three-five, three runs, four hits.
- 1:10:31The Dodgers have played poorly in the field.
- 1:10:38We're seeing how the Braves can catch it in.
- 1:10:40The Dodgers tried with four areas up the hill.
- 1:10:49The Dodgers have committed the errors, Buckner and Clay, and two by Russell.
- 1:10:56One of the errors, by Russell, was understandably slipped in the rain on the grass.
- 1:11:09All right, Mike Marshall, gets off the mound, looks out at Davey Lopes, then to Ron Say.
- 1:11:15Say is up, Garvey is up, Lopes and Russell are back.
- 1:11:20The outfield, Frank Cepedino to pull, and Marshall ready to go to work with it.
- 1:11:27A three-three tie and the Dodgers are in trouble here in the fourth.
- 1:11:34The first pitch low and inside, ball one, one and oh.
- 1:11:48On the count of Cepedino, make it Johnson and Carell out on the line.
- 1:11:57Marshall plants the right foot on the rubber, he's pitching out of the stretch.
- 1:12:01They are passing out pictures of Henry Aron to the crowd with the cryptic number 715.
- 1:12:08Cepedino excites on the count of one and one.
- 1:12:26One ball, one spike.
- 1:12:28A three-three tie in the fourth on what is turning out to be a cold night in Atlanta.
- 1:12:35They're armed as he was in Montreal.
- 1:12:38That's about one-one pitches in the dirt, ball two, two and one.
- 1:12:45The Graves have received four awards.
- 1:12:48The Dodgers have committed four errors.
- 1:12:52The Dodgers are fortunate that this ballgame is not out of sight, should it be even.
- 1:12:59The Reddites are all attributed to the Henry Aron night.
- 1:13:06Two and one, the count of Cepedino.
- 1:13:08Marshall ready and Mike Beals, whoa, ball three.
- 1:13:20Marshall turns his back on a home plate, thinking over things.
- 1:13:25The infield of Garvey and Lopes, Russell and Say, and the outfield, Buckner, Wynn and Crumper.
- 1:13:33Not only did the other take the Braves out of a two-out situation,
- 1:13:38it also puts a much better hitter up at the plate, so that is indeed a damaging one.
- 1:13:44Ferguson has to pick up a piece of paper in front of home plate.
- 1:13:51Three and one, the count. Three, three, five, bottom of the board, the Braves have loaded the bases.
- 1:14:12Well, the parable is experiencing some difficulties,
- 1:14:14and I can tell you for the first time, honestly being the best policy, that this is a problem here at AFRTF.
- 1:14:21I can hear the incoming heat from my head jet, but you're not getting it somehow,
- 1:14:26so it's very possible you're not going to be hearing me.
- 1:14:29But anyway, if that is the case, our engineer Ralph Walters is trying to figure it out.
- 1:14:33He says he's got to take it care of, so let's get back to the ballgame.
- 1:14:41Our show looks to pure Ferguson, now Mike Ruddy.
- 1:14:45One, two, three, fastball filed away, our first base out of play.
- 1:14:52Look, Joe, one and two.
- 1:14:59Four to three, Atlanta, here in the bottom of the fourth inning.
- 1:15:04And Aaron has stolen the show, no matter what the outcome of this one.
- 1:15:08Headlines across the country, Henry has done it.
- 1:15:12One and two, the count to Ron Reeves.
- 1:15:14I shall deliver, screwball, whiffed at Russia, and the NTFI will be called by Sue Dale.
- 1:15:21Far away.
- 1:15:28That brings up Ralph Gar.
- 1:15:31Almost impossible to double up Gar.
- 1:15:35He's back to the box and was aboard on an error.
- 1:15:39There was four to three, Atlanta, here in the fourth inning.
- 1:15:48And Gar waiting at the plate.
- 1:15:51Base is loaded, one away.
- 1:15:54And Gar, left-hand batter, checks in with Ron Faye on the grass at third.
- 1:16:01Marshall's taking a lot of time, he should be out of the inning.
- 1:16:06Mike deals and he's high and outside with it, 4-1.
- 1:16:11He did his job, he got the batter to hit into a double play, and the Dodgers missed it.
- 1:16:18So it's four to three, Atlanta, and they're still swinging here in the fourth inning.
- 1:16:28Marshall checking, Gar waiting, now Mike's ready.
- 1:16:32One-oh-fix, fastball, flung out and missed in the count of one and one.
- 1:16:39The old story is pretty high to do it on one-fix in the big leagues, and so Marshall's known for his screwball,
- 1:16:45but every now and then he shoots that express in the count of one and one.
- 1:16:53Johnson, Corral, and Temadino all out on the line.
- 1:16:58Ralph Gar trying to pick somebody up, and another left-hand hitter on deck, Mike Worms.
- 1:17:15The one-one-fix is right to left field, that's where another corner makes the catch.
- 1:17:21Johnson flags and comes home, and it's five to three, Atlanta.
- 1:17:33David Johnson carries it home.
- 1:17:37That run is charged to Downing, and you can close the book on Al.
- 1:17:45He went three innings and lost five runs.
- 1:17:49But one of them, one of the most dramatic hits in all of the game history at baseball, the home run by Henry Ahn.
- 1:18:00Here's Mike Lumb with two on, two out, four runs over, five through Atlanta.
- 1:18:07Marshall ready, Mike Dio screwball, flung out and missed on one.
- 1:18:11I tell you, I'm extremely thankful that Aaron hit it tonight. The over 200 writers who were here,
- 1:18:20they were dreading the thought, especially Dodger writers, that Aaron might do it on a getaway night.
- 1:18:28But now they've got plenty of time.
- 1:18:32The one-one to count to Mike Lumb. Marshall's ball is hit back to Mike.
- 1:18:38And it's a great job in relief, but the Dodgers play poorly and they surrender four runs on one hit.
- 1:18:46And one on Ovation in left field when Henry Ahn goes jogging out there again.
- 1:18:52The score at the end of the four, Atlanta five and the Dodgers three.
- 1:18:57The fifth inning here in Atlanta, the Braves are leading five to three, and a few people are going home.
- 1:19:05They have seen what they came to see, and as we told you, it's cold and we bet you'll rain.
- 1:19:11And for some folks, maybe, okay, we've seen enough time, but the majority of the six are out standing right here.
- 1:19:19The game is the thing and it is hard to play Atlanta.
- 1:19:22And the party players have taken over a short stop for Craig Robinson.
- 1:19:28Well, I bet the temperature dropped 20 degrees from just before the start of the game to now.
- 1:19:46And giving the statistics on Al Downing, the voice on the PA system in the first box,
- 1:19:54Al Downing three innings, five runs, two at four, four, and then two strikeouts and the home run.
- 1:20:12The fifth inning, the Dodgers five, Dodgers three, Bill Russell has had a rough night,
- 1:20:28and it'll be Mike Michael, and after Michael, Davey Lopes. Russell swings, doesn't get it, on one.
- 1:20:43On one to count, back comes Ron Reed and is a high chopper to shortstop.
- 1:20:50Perez clubs it and throws the first of the outs.
- 1:20:53And time to cover the Aaron story for you. We had Downing introduced before the game as to how he would feel
- 1:21:02and what it would be like and what he would do if and when Aaron hits the home run.
- 1:21:06And he did exactly what he said. He was going to go in the dugout and sit down and watch the sound on him.
- 1:21:12Then we have a quote now from Downing as to how it feels in reality now that it has been hit,
- 1:21:19now that you're all alone in the clubhouse, now that your ballgame has gone down the drain, and here's what he said.
- 1:21:26I was really 715 for them. I rubbed kind of a pitch through it. I was fast forwarded. I kind of got a down for him, but I didn't get it down and maybe he didn't. I gave it a go.
- 1:21:52I was trying to get the ball up, but then he hit me. He didn't bother me though.
- 1:21:59He pitched out and hit you to him in the second inning and then of course two pitches in the fourth inning when he hit the home run.
- 1:22:05And actually just as he did on the number 714, he hit this one on the first time he swung his bat.
- 1:22:12Well, I agree with him. He kicked his kick and he's pretty sure that's the pitch he hit before and it seems like he's going to hit it pretty good.
- 1:22:19When did you think it was out?
- 1:22:22Well, when he first did, I didn't think it might be going because I was watching a win and I was watching Buckner.
- 1:22:27So then the rest of the pitch, I think, I'm going to watch him when he gets the pitch. I knew it was going in.
- 1:22:32Well, that's Al Downing talking about the other end, the other side of the coin of Henry Irons home run.
- 1:22:39Russell Browned is short and Marshall Fowldowd and Davy Lopes up there, they count one ball in one side. Reed's fastball is high, ball two, two and one.
- 1:22:50Brett Patterson, vice president of the Dodgers, thoughtfully went down and got those quotes and we appreciate it.
- 1:22:56Thank you very much. I know you do too.
- 1:22:59Here's the 2-1 pitch to Davy Lopes and it's blown away.
- 1:23:03Five to three in favor of Atlanta.
- 1:23:13Three and one to count to Davy.
- 1:23:16Ron Reed checking with Dick Correll and the right-hander's fastball is inside.
- 1:23:21So a two-out walk to Davy Lopes and that brings up Bill Buckner.
- 1:23:28Buckner was the one closest to the home run by Henry Irons and when the ball went out deep at the 385 side,
- 1:23:38Buckner climbed the fence and he had his back to home plate as he got to the top of the fence desperately trying to catch it.
- 1:23:49And every foot of that 390-foot home run and every step around the infield, the pitch to Buckner to strike.
- 1:23:58Oh and one. Oh and one to Bill Buckner.
- 1:24:11Buckner waiting, now Reed at the bell, looks at Lopes who bluffs and Buckner hits it into right heel.
- 1:24:16That's going to be a base hit. Over to get at his jaw, Lopes moves into Byrd.
- 1:24:21So with two out, a walk and a base hit and Dodgers are at first and third and the batter is Jimmy Winn.
- 1:24:50Winn waiting and the fastball is fouled back. Oh and one to count.
- 1:25:09Oh and one to count to Jimmy Winn. Reed at the bell, Ron delivers and Winn takes the strike.
- 1:25:31The strike two pitch, one on and fouled away. Jimmy Winn battling Ron Reed. Oh and two to count.
- 1:25:50Oh and two to count to Jimmy Winn. Reed checking, straightens up.
- 1:25:58And the strike two pitch on the way is a poker back over the mound down to Davey Johnson who steps on the bag to force Buckner.
- 1:26:05No run to hit, two left and at the end of four and a half, Atlanta five, Dodgers three.
- 1:26:10Okay, Joe, I was just listening to the PA system getting more notes on Henry Aaron's home run.
- 1:26:17Mike Marshall into the wind up and the pitch is a strike. Oh and one to Dusty Baker.
- 1:26:27They were saying the ball had a certain series of numbers on it so there would be no fooling around once it was hit.
- 1:26:36And if I heard him right it was 12-12-2-2 marked on the ball.
- 1:26:43Five to three in total of Atlanta.
- 1:26:47Dyle Evans, Henry Aaron, Dusty Baker in that order. Evans grounded out and it was a board on the eye. He takes a change, fair blow.
- 1:26:57And the count one and two.
- 1:27:05One and two to count to Dyle Evans.
- 1:27:09And a screwball is popped in here into right field. Davey Lopes backs out, falling all the while and makes the catch. One away.
- 1:27:18And here is Henry Aaron for the third time tonight, a standing ovation.
- 1:27:25The third time during the game he had a standing ovation in the pregame ceremony.
- 1:27:31He had another standing ovation after he hit the home run.
- 1:27:34So he leads the league in standing ovations. He's had five standing ovations in five innings.
- 1:27:43The winner is at the plate.
- 1:27:47Mike Marco hooks in to Joe Ferguson to get a sign.
- 1:27:52Mike's fair arm scratches up the dirt in front of the rubber then on the rubber. Aaron gets in.
- 1:27:59There are so many pictures that are marked indelibly in my mind now, back tonight.
- 1:28:06Two ball, first like on one.
- 1:28:08First it was Dan really hitting it. It wasn't a fly ball home run, he really crushed it.
- 1:28:13Secondly, the Dodger is shaking his hand as he ran around the infield.
- 1:28:18Fastball to one hopper to stay. Ron has it and throws it out.
- 1:28:23And then I guess the thing I'll never forget, Aaron's father standing at home plate.
- 1:28:29An edge in the five. And the father, who had to work so hard and get so little to support his children.
- 1:28:38And then his mother throwing her arms around his neck, kissing him for all she was worth.
- 1:28:45I think that was it. That's the scene I remember more than anything else.
- 1:28:50Hold on a moment.
- 1:28:53Mike Marco just flung out on this on one.
- 1:29:09Marshall back with a screwball, squirted foul off first and the count on two.
- 1:29:28Oh and two, the count to Dusty Baker.
- 1:29:34Marshall hands it his side, checking Ferguson. Now Mike into the wind up and the strike two-thirt, the fastball over strike three-fourth.
- 1:29:43Marshall has turned in a tremendous job in relief, undermined by the Dodger lapse in defense.
- 1:29:50And the Braves are out in order in the fifth. And at the end of five, at Lattifive and the Dodgers three.
- 1:29:57At the end of five, as the Braves five runs on two hits, the home run, a jury, one of those two hits, the home run by Henry Aaron.
- 1:30:07For the Dodgers three runs, five hits and four errors.
- 1:30:15For the Dodgers, Joe Ferguson, Willie Crawford and Ron Frey.
- 1:30:27Reed both feet on the rubber now and the big guy from LaForte, Indiana, ready to go to work for Ferguson.
- 1:30:33And the fastball is high, ball one, one to no.
- 1:30:43Reed comes back to the plate and it's fouled over the screen into the lower deck. One and one.
- 1:30:51We've mentioned the weather here in Atlanta. It is very cold. It had rain so it's damp and the wind is carrying a bit of a knife.
- 1:30:59So a lot of folks have taken off. It's a Monday night. They're going home.
- 1:31:04The one-one pitch is about to hit down to Marty Perez. The short shot has it and throws out Ferguson. One away.
- 1:31:14But they saw what they came to see and that makes it quite a night.
- 1:31:24One down and Willie Crawford's a batter. Ground is enjoyed and struck out.
- 1:31:34Reed ready and delivers. Fastball, line drive and a fouling catch by Perez but it goes off his glove when he hits the ground.
- 1:31:42And Crawford is aboard with the base hit. A fine diving attempt for Perez but he couldn't hold it.
- 1:31:49Crawford aboard and that'll bring up Ron Sey.
- 1:31:57Ron Sey is back to the box and flies a challenge.
- 1:32:01Jerry, I'm just wondering, what are you going to try to do for the post-game show, do you think?
- 1:32:07We're going to have a press conference with Henry Head and the Hulmer of the Suburbs side near the base.
- 1:32:12We'll go there and hopefully we can bring at least part of that press conference. There'll be several hundred writers in the room asking questions.
- 1:32:22We'll do that as much of it as we can. We might let the folks here.
- 1:32:26I'll use the Scrabble Hulmer and we'll have a little bit around the post-game show.
- 1:32:29But I think mainly we'll be in the clubhouse and listen to what Henry has to say and answer the questions.
- 1:32:34That's great. We'll all look forward to that for sure.
- 1:32:38Crawford now at second as the pitch gets away and Sey takes a breaking ball low.
- 1:32:46A one-out single wild pitch. Crawford at second. Q&O to counter Ron Sey and it's 5-3 Atlanta.
- 1:32:54We're lifting the top of the sixth inning.
- 1:32:58Reed ready and delivers and there's a half-flame, Crawford back to second base and into center field.
- 1:33:04Crawford scores and Sey shuts this fling and drives in a run.
- 1:33:09So for Ronny, things are going just fine. That's his eighth-high B-I.
- 1:33:14The Dodgers are close now. It's Atlanta five and the Dodgers four.
- 1:33:19And Nevada will be Steve Garvey.
- 1:33:22So five-four Atlanta. And here's Garvey infield single and fouled out.
- 1:33:37Reed ready and delivers. Steve takes low, ball one.
- 1:33:41The Braves are going to get somebody up on the bullpen. They take the tie ball.
- 1:33:46One and all to count. Reed ready, checks and delivers. Change is just outside.
- 1:33:56Ball two, two and all.
- 1:33:59This story is not over, not by a long shot.
- 1:34:03First of all, in order for Aaron's own run to count, it has to be an official game.
- 1:34:09Can't have an outcome to it. The Vig is flung on a miss. Two and one.
- 1:34:16And we're in the sixth inning and the Braves are leading five to four.
- 1:34:24Reed straightens up now, set of the bell. Looks to Sey and delivers.
- 1:34:27Fastball grounded to third. Jai Levin has it. Down to second for Forest and Etterol.
- 1:34:33Sey going in hard to tie up Baby Johnson.
- 1:34:36And to pass the station identification, this is the Los Angeles Dodgers Radio Network.
- 1:34:40This is the American Forces Radio and Television Service.
- 1:34:54Here's Bill Russell. Russell has it double and grounded out.
- 1:34:58He's got a rough night in the field, committing two errors, and one of them,
- 1:35:02Bill Gibbs of Braves, four runs.
- 1:35:06So Downing was very unlucky tonight. He got no support whatsoever.
- 1:35:12Reed, a checker first, and delivers. And the Vig is popped out, back of the plate.
- 1:35:17Carrillo comes back to the backstop screen.
- 1:35:20And he can't get it. It's on the other side of the screen.
- 1:35:23On one, the count to Bill Russell.
- 1:35:29Danny Forsyth drawing in the Atlanta Bullpen.
- 1:35:34X-Mets.
- 1:35:40Well, Capra was recently sold from New York to the Mets.
- 1:35:47The Vig filed away on two. In fact, there was a note in the papers,
- 1:35:52the Mets and the Braves have been involved in something like 24 deals.
- 1:35:5924 deals.
- 1:36:02Most recently, the sale of Capra.
- 1:36:09Reed, ready, delivers. Fastball, bounce down to Davey Johnson.
- 1:36:13Davey has it, goes to first, that'll do it.
- 1:36:15The Dodgers are over to get a run on a couple of hits.
- 1:36:18The Braves lead the game to 5-1-1 and the Braves 5, Dodgers 4.
- 1:36:23Bottom of the sixth inning, the Braves leading the Dodgers 5 to 4.
- 1:36:28Mike Marshall and the Leafs starting pitcher, Al Downing.
- 1:36:32The headline story, of course, for Henry Irons home run with the man on board in the fourth inning,
- 1:36:37number 715, to equip the base.
- 1:36:41And now the ball game itself is of great interest.
- 1:36:45Mike Marshall waiting for a Leafs baseball to be retrieved by Willie Crapper.
- 1:36:52Dave Johnson, Vic Carell and Marty Perez in that order.
- 1:37:02Marshall up on top, Jill Ferguson with dragging signs out and Davey Johnson waiting.
- 1:37:11Right hand to the windup and the right hand is first pitch.
- 1:37:15Two ball punted, off to the right and foul, 1-1.
- 1:37:281-1 to count.
- 1:37:35The ball's in one's sight.
- 1:37:39Joe, reading Ferguson.
- 1:37:41Now Mike into the windup and the strike one pitch on the way.
- 1:37:44Screwball far back up there, knocked down with a throw by Schell.
- 1:37:48It's trickled through into the field.
- 1:37:50Johnson holding with a single.
- 1:37:53Received by Puckner.
- 1:37:55So Davey Johnson singles off Faye's love.
- 1:37:59That was a solid base.
- 1:38:01It's safe to say it would have made a fine play to get him.
- 1:38:05Nevada would be Vic Carell a catcher.
- 1:38:09We're waiting for Carell, Marty Perez down the on deck circle.
- 1:38:13They have a...
- 1:38:37Catcher Vic Carell coming up.
- 1:38:47Mike Marshall waiting for Ferguson to settle in a crouch behind the plate.
- 1:38:52Carell's fall, it's right hand battered.
- 1:38:55Marshall will look over at Davey Johnson.
- 1:38:59Oswell, Atlanta in the bottom of the sixth inning.
- 1:39:04Marshall ready to let a screwball probably to say he jumped as it picked it up.
- 1:39:08There's the red for a 4-hundred in the Dodgers' next-up and every other is a double play ball.
- 1:39:14So they are really having the kidders tonight.
- 1:39:16Maybe because of the Aaron influence, but whatever.
- 1:39:20Their inability to make a play, plus their four errors have contributed heavily to the Atlanta 5-way lead.
- 1:39:28That was another double play ball.
- 1:39:31So Marshall must be wondering about their defense on this club.
- 1:39:35He's got everything imaginable.
- 1:39:37The Dodgers just can't get him out for him.
- 1:39:40Just Perez.
- 1:39:45Marshall at the bell and Mike delivers.
- 1:39:47Screwball, exercise, 0-1.
- 1:39:55Marshall is due up first when the Dodgers hit in the seventh.
- 1:39:58So to get ready for that, a possible hitter, Charlie Huff, saw a knuckleball in the Dodger bullpen.
- 1:40:09Marshall checking. Ferguson hangs out of time.
- 1:40:12And Mike delivers. Screwball low, 1-1.
- 1:40:19Well, the refs in great faith in Marshall, but also faith in his bullpen,
- 1:40:22because it was kind of early when you think about it.
- 1:40:24You think of Marshall as a defender, but he came into the game in the fourth inning.
- 1:40:34Mike checking with Ferguson. Marty Perez waiting. Ron Reid on deck.
- 1:40:38Marshall, screwball in the dirt. 2-1.
- 1:40:53Marshall straddling the rubber.
- 1:40:57Turn's on, looks over to Perez.
- 1:41:02Mike ready.
- 1:41:03The 2-1 pitch is lined right through it for a face-off,
- 1:41:07so often ever to get it.
- 1:41:09The second and going to third is Terrell.
- 1:41:12And so, because they missed the double play, the Dodgers are in trouble again.
- 1:41:16First and third with one out.
- 1:41:20And the batter will be Ron Reid.
- 1:41:22Terrell may be a hitter, because Reid has been called away by Eddie Matthews.
- 1:41:31So a base hit to put Ron as his first and third.
- 1:41:35Here in the inning, Johnson's single. Terrell had a double play ball to save,
- 1:41:39but Ron was handcuffed and then could only get a fourth.
- 1:41:43Now a base hit by Perez, and evidently will have a hitter for Marty Perez, for Ron Reid.
- 1:41:51Could be Johnny Oaks, the left-hand hitting catcher.
- 1:41:56And we're waiting. Dave Davidson, a playoff player, walking over near the Atlanta dugout,
- 1:42:00and just say, come on now, it's cold out here.
- 1:42:03Dave was a wise man, he's wearing a turtleneck.
- 1:42:08Les Capra is now throwing in the Atlanta bullpen instead of Danny Purcell.
- 1:42:19And Johnny Oaks, the left-hand hitting catcher, is coming up to hit for Reid.
- 1:42:27So each time the Dodgers make a mistake in the last couple of innings,
- 1:42:31Matthews is not only grateful for the mistake, he's going to try and catch it in.
- 1:42:36So when Terrell hit a double play ball and Russell dropped it,
- 1:42:39he then batted for the Robinson with Cappadino, who walked a fourth over a run.
- 1:42:45Terrell saved Mr. Double Play until he's going to try to catch that in,
- 1:42:49and he has Johnny Oaks batting for Ron Reid.
- 1:42:56So Reid went six innings, allowed four runs, seven hits,
- 1:43:04and he can be the winning pitcher,
- 1:43:07as Capra has been throwing in the Atlanta bullpen along with Danny Purcell.
- 1:43:13So Johnny Oaks had the play.
- 1:43:19Oaks is one for eight from that Cincinnati series.
- 1:43:26Mike Marshall ready to work to him.
- 1:43:33There's at first Terrell at third, the pitch to Oaks, five, four, one.
- 1:43:38The Dodgers have given a hard-hitting team enough work and have made enough errors
- 1:43:44for a hard-hitting team to knock them out of sight,
- 1:43:47but they're still very much in the game, failing five, four.
- 1:43:54Mike Marshall ready for one-off, it's so fast for a left-to-ground ball to Russell.
- 1:43:59He's the 12th who juggles, but they get the out at second.
- 1:44:03The players are going to argue that Davey was never in possession of the ball,
- 1:44:09but Tudor is now indicating safe.
- 1:44:12He had called him out, but when the plays came out,
- 1:44:15Eddie's entered, no, he's safe, he juggled it.
- 1:44:18So Davey Lurch juggles the ball, and that's going to be five hours for the Dodgers.
- 1:44:26Oh, they are putting up a dreadful defense in this game tonight.
- 1:44:32So an E4 play gives the Braves another run, their leading six to four,
- 1:44:38and with runners at first and second here is Ralph Gar.
- 1:44:46So Mike Marshall, taking himself, it's cold enough to think he's pitching for Montreal on a bad year.
- 1:44:58Ralph Gar, he's back to the box, a ball down an error and a fly-out.
- 1:45:03This far ball has got a run long, so he's 0-2 with a run about at end.
- 1:45:08Five Dodger errors. That would be a high or a low, I guess.
- 1:45:13See how many they made in one game last year, six.
- 1:45:18Marshall delivers a butt out of the box.
- 1:45:32They are really playing as if they're in shock, and that would be a fine way to play.
- 1:45:48So Gora butted, Ferguson had the angle to pick the ball up, and he just dropped it, although they have not classed it.
- 1:45:57That means a half a dozen errors to the Dodgers, whether they can get it all out tonight.
- 1:46:06And the batter is Mike Lom.
- 1:46:10So the Dodgers commit six errors. That's the high or the low they've ever had.
- 1:46:16Russell fields the ground ball and throws the first to get Lom, and the runners move up, and a run comes over.
- 1:46:22So the Dodgers keep making mistakes, and the Braves keep picking up the runs, and they're leading now as Monty Perez carries in a run.
- 1:46:31So it's 7-4 in line.
- 1:46:41The game is just a batter, and Henry Garrett is on deck. So the Dodgers have committed six errors tonight.
- 1:46:53The Braves are leading 7-4.
- 1:46:58And here's Dan Eleven, rounded out, a board on an aricotta.
- 1:47:03Fitz Goobel is left to sky, left bird, down the line, say in pursuit, makes the catch for the hour.
- 1:47:13In the sixth inning for Atlanta, they get two runs on two hits, and they were erred by Lopes and Bergen.
- 1:47:24At the end of sixth, grade seven, Dodgers forward to the sixth inning for Atlanta.
- 1:47:33Seven runs, four hits, one of the four hits, a historic home run by Henry Garrett with Atlanta Bulldogs.
- 1:47:40But the Dodgers throw those on eyebrow raising, four runs, seven hits, and six errors.
- 1:47:49And here's Roy Capra, down in the Atlanta bulls.
- 1:47:54Seven innings, four playing, here's Jack.
- 1:47:57Five innings for the Dodgers, it'll be Von Joshua to replace Mike Wetzel, who worked three innings,
- 1:48:03and Roy Mike was hidden picked up by, he goes, he picks up the bird.
- 1:48:07He got two runs, and two hits.
- 1:48:11And now, he's got only one ball to get out of the end field. That was a classified spot, a shallow left field by Rob Josh.
- 1:48:20I hear Capra coming on now to take over for Ron Reed.
- 1:48:25Capra, making his second appearance of the year, he has worked in one game, two thirds of an inning,
- 1:48:30gave up a run to lose the game.
- 1:48:33Henry Garrett is still in the game in the left field, in case you're wondering,
- 1:48:36and he has one more bat he'll be batting in the bottom of the seventh inning.
- 1:48:40Here is Von Joshua now, the Dodgers have had a cast yet.
- 1:48:44They have not been behind much this year, even in the spring games,
- 1:48:47but now they find themselves three down after gifting two more runs to the Braves.
- 1:48:54Actually, all of the runs the Braves have scored are painted except for the one run.
- 1:48:59That was the only clean run they have scored.
- 1:49:03The first run was unearned, and in that fourth inning there were a couple of unheard runs.
- 1:49:09The Braves were 20,000 away strike one.
- 1:49:13Two more. Here is Joshua Williams, Murray Capra, second time.
- 1:49:21Time called now, he's going to the mound to have a cup.
- 1:49:27Got your Vic Correll visiting with Capra on the mound.
- 1:49:31Capra is not in the Braves front guy, he was just recently obtained from the New York Mets.
- 1:49:38Now the Gubrin's home kind of kept on the field, and some of the civilians here are taking him off.
- 1:49:48They had a few run on the field there today.
- 1:49:53This fellow didn't want to leave, and he's getting a couple on season now.
- 1:49:57He's getting us going around the ballpark down in the right field corner.
- 1:50:00A 7-4 Braves lead on a wild and windy night in Atlanta and a historic night in baseball victory.
- 1:50:08Lee Lacey is out on deck, he was back for maybe much for that.
- 1:50:16Joshua is up batting now for Marshall, but Lee Lacey comes out on deck.
- 1:50:267-4 the score.
- 1:50:30Time is short for the moment, while we wait for the plan to be escorted up into the park corner in right field.
- 1:50:38Charlie Heff is still throwing in the Dodger pass line down in right field.
- 1:50:42Here's Capra, 50-0 Joshua, come on in this, strike two.
- 1:50:46O-N-T is a count.
- 1:50:52Here's the strike, the Dodger who's the Dodger leading middle and spring.
- 1:50:57Now Capra ready to deliver.
- 1:50:59Come on in, this is like a little breaking ball and down goes Joshua.
- 1:51:08That's one away, and the batter now will be David Lacey.
- 1:51:11David Lacey was up bat, it'll be Lee Lacey instead.
- 1:51:14So Lacey's going to get to finish up the game, batting here in the 7th inning.
- 1:51:20Lacey steps in, Lee on the year has not had an attack.
- 1:51:26Buckler is on deck and the Dodgers are down, 7-4, but they have really kicked this one away literally.
- 1:51:32They have given up a chance for the Braves.
- 1:51:37Now the pitch on the way, breaking ball long.
- 1:51:41The Braves have seven runs, they should have only one.
- 1:51:44But that's part of the game, the air is out of all of it.
- 1:51:48Lacey, a half-frame foul out of play with Tim, but that pitch from the Capdota 1-1.
- 1:51:53One bar, one strike, Lee Lacey the batter.
- 1:52:01I'm sure you'll hear the remarks from Henry Aaron himself.
- 1:52:05He'll be in the locker room.
- 1:52:07When Henry's interview's following the game, it'll be a mass interview, a press conference thing.
- 1:52:12We'll be there to pick up his remarks for you.
- 1:52:16Here's the 1-1 pitch on the way.
- 1:52:19Lacey takes a third strike out of those 1 and 2.
- 1:52:22Kapper comes over from the net.
- 1:52:26For Scheller, he's far from the Braves' booth and they're trying to sure hit the bullpen a bit.
- 1:52:31Lacey takes a back ball down low, a ball 2 and a third even to 2 and 2.
- 1:52:37Two-ball soup strikes with one out and nobody on, the Braves leading 7-4 here in Atlanta.
- 1:52:43Come on, I've done something that goes against Kyle and Murphy.
- 1:52:47Half of the crowd is gone.
- 1:52:51Over half, I would say.
- 1:52:53Now the pitch on the way.
- 1:52:55That's bring second, ball three, 3 and 2.
- 1:52:59Both go through in the upper stands in the outfield.
- 1:53:04Most of it all gone.
- 1:53:06There are a few remaining in the lower stands in the outfield.
- 1:53:09Quite a good gathering in the home plate area.
- 1:53:13Lacey, Kyle's up and back to the line.
- 1:53:15The count is still 3 and 2 to leave.
- 1:53:19They had a great turnout.
- 1:53:21They were just over 50,000.
- 1:53:23They have not announced the paid attendance as yet.
- 1:53:28They do not have a big advance goal for tomorrow night considering the occasion.
- 1:53:33Here's the 3-2 pitch.
- 1:53:35That's 3-4. Lacey is far out on set.
- 1:53:39Strikeout number 2 for Capra.
- 1:53:42And the battle will be Bill Buckner.
- 1:53:45Buckner is 1-3.
- 1:53:47Jerry, we just heard that when the news reached Washington, D.C.,
- 1:53:52President Nixon put in a call to talk to Henry Aaron.
- 1:53:56Aaron, at the moment of the call, was in the outfield.
- 1:53:59So they said they would call back.
- 1:54:01When Aaron did come in, they replaced the call in the clubhouse.
- 1:54:05Aaron talked to the President.
- 1:54:07He congratulated.
- 1:54:09And it's just another note on our number of leaving.
- 1:54:12Fine, Vinnie.
- 1:54:13And here's the attendance.
- 1:54:14That should be a new record.
- 1:54:17There's a flung-and-a-fall straight back.
- 1:54:1953,775 is the new all-time record there.
- 1:54:23So the Dodgers hold the top three cards now in the Atlanta Stadium.
- 1:54:27We told you earlier about the other two that they had.
- 1:54:30So this is the top card of all.
- 1:54:33And the Dodgers hold the top three.
- 1:54:36And, in fact, the other one was 52,270, then 51,275,
- 1:54:42and another large Dodger got it, 47,000.
- 1:54:45So the President has congratulated Henry.
- 1:54:49And it's really an absurd occasion in baseball.
- 1:54:57I tell you, that's been all through the wrong tile.
- 1:55:00Even last year, at the end of the year,
- 1:55:02when he was chasing the record and getting closer and closer,
- 1:55:05Henry's conduct was superb.
- 1:55:08And he was a great gentleman about it and very cooperative with everybody.
- 1:55:12Which comes outside the back of the ball,
- 1:55:14filled with the two-and-one shot.
- 1:55:15I would imagine that Henry will bat in the bottom of the seven-point inning
- 1:55:19and then leave the game and go into the clubhouse
- 1:55:21and wait for the first conference pass of the game.
- 1:55:24Here's the pitch.
- 1:55:25Three-and-one.
- 1:55:27Three-ball, one strike.
- 1:55:42Three-one pitch on the way.
- 1:55:44And it's taken for a strike, but they're three and two.
- 1:55:51Three-ball, two strikes.
- 1:55:55The others kept working here in the relief of Brown-Reade.
- 1:55:58The Dodgers are down by three runs.
- 1:56:01They played give-away here tonight.
- 1:56:03Down the pitch, taken low, and Buckner is on with the lock.
- 1:56:06So Billy Buckner draws the lock.
- 1:56:09That's the first lock the Dodgers have received tonight.
- 1:56:11And it brings the Dodgy win with Joe Ferguson to follow.
- 1:56:15Strong breeze from westward right.
- 1:56:18He's got the wind at the end of the wind, and he hit it well.
- 1:56:22It carried about 385 over the 385 mark,
- 1:56:25and the Dow downing said this was off the fastball.
- 1:56:31The line called a moment to pick up some gray papers
- 1:56:33that are blowing around on the open plate area.
- 1:56:37And off the first and back.
- 1:56:38There's a pitch to win.
- 1:56:39In the dirt, four-one.
- 1:56:41Billy has a whole run of each game that he's played as a Dodger.
- 1:56:44A great win is driven in. Two runs with a double to left field.
- 1:56:48Big newspaper picked up by second base umpire, 82-ball.
- 1:56:52A couple dribbled stuff to the pocket.
- 1:56:54A one-all count.
- 1:56:56Pitch on the way.
- 1:56:57Curve strikes a win in the 10-and-1.
- 1:57:00The Dodgers gave away two more runs in the last half of the first inning,
- 1:57:04and those were a vital run.
- 1:57:06They were almost to catch up to the Braves until they gave those away
- 1:57:09and then fell back to three behind.
- 1:57:11But now they've got a little more of a hill to climb.
- 1:57:13If I count a ice skate, you take one step and flip down.
- 1:57:18Wins, takes the strikes on the inside corner, one-and-two to Jimmy.
- 1:57:23If the Dodgers lose tonight, that means the Giants are the only unbeaten team left.
- 1:57:28The Giants won today. They beat the Reds four to three.
- 1:57:32The Reds are now two-and-two on the year.
- 1:57:37A one-ball, two-strike count.
- 1:57:39Here's the look in the pitch to win.
- 1:57:41Jimmy strikes out the five.
- 1:57:44He ties to the Dodgers, and he's got the winning.
- 1:57:46The Topper strikes out the five.
- 1:57:50The runs go into one more.
- 1:57:52The Scorpions, a picture there.
- 1:57:53The Dodgers, former and Atlanta, seven.
- 1:57:58Well, as we told you, the Braves are focusing on Jimmy Scott many times.
- 1:58:04He was entering, stepping in now.
- 1:58:10And Charlie Huff, into the lineup, and the knuckleball bounces away, ball away.
- 1:58:17Don Dysdale is the number one victim of all 50s of Henry Aaron.
- 1:58:23Don yielded 17, while those teams, 13.
- 1:58:28So Don dubbed him Bad Henry.
- 1:58:31The swing winner of the knuckleball, one-and-one,
- 1:58:35Danny Koufax, allowed seven.
- 1:58:41Davey Larkin's out of the lineup because of a strained back.
- 1:58:44They were fecking on that, and that's the word that comes up now.
- 1:58:47The one-one-sixth turn.
- 1:58:49Well, and an up-strike, too.
- 1:58:51Charlie Huff opens up another knuckleball, and Henry,
- 1:58:55I would imagine, has had a relapse.
- 1:58:58I would think that he would just have a letdown after all he's gone through,
- 1:59:02all this swing, time called out, he backs out.
- 1:59:08Can't help but have another big piece of newspaper come
- 1:59:12mainly in front of the man, and Steve Garvey comes over to receive and pick it up.
- 1:59:20First-rate coach Jim Busby will stuff that piece in his pocket.
- 1:59:25We're certainly glad to be able to sit in on some baseball
- 1:59:28and see the many shows we're on here.
- 1:59:30We've been very fortunate to see several big records shattered.
- 1:59:35Knuckleball will, I'll say, have more room than his big record-setting team.
- 1:59:39Quite well, as he went through the man's time at the time in the late days of his career
- 1:59:45as a Dodger a couple of years ago.
- 1:59:47First, a great performance of the guys, Daly and Koufax.
- 1:59:50Knuckleball, top-score six, wrestles from back there to back.
- 1:59:54Here he is on Dutchman Heron, and he's out on the ground ball to score.
- 1:59:58And you've got today the Rovers going to come to the basketball.
- 2:00:01This might be his last appearance here tonight.
- 2:00:03Let's pause for station identification.
- 2:00:05This is the Los Angeles Dodgers Radio Network.
- 2:00:09This is the American Forces Radio and Television Service.
- 2:00:14Here is Jesse Baker, about a single walk and stretch out.
- 2:00:26That's a ball of little ball, one ball and no strike.
- 2:00:31Bottom of the seventh inning.
- 2:00:33I'm trying to think if there are any other records that might be
- 2:00:40obtainable here in the modern day of baseball, but I can't let them come to mind right now.
- 2:00:46But I'm sure that there might be some more around.
- 2:00:50Here is the two-horse pitcher on the left, back ball low, and his ball free is up to Baker.
- 2:00:57But this was a big one.
- 2:01:04Way on the count.
- 2:01:07Now the hand that went up on the pitch on the way.
- 2:01:12Taking low ball for it, and Jesse Baker is on with a walk.
- 2:01:15That's the first walk given up by the left.
- 2:01:17Baseball, of course, is a secret tradition.
- 2:01:20Down through the years.
- 2:01:23The records have been very meaningful to the fans, as well as the performance on the field.
- 2:01:29So the records are all part of it.
- 2:01:37Here is Davey Johnson, is that an infield hit a walk and a fly out.
- 2:01:43He's one for two to pitch today.
- 2:01:45Another ball high, one ball and no strike.
- 2:01:49The game is about two hours and a half along now, and we're in the bottom of the seventh inning here in Atlanta.
- 2:01:55The rest of the kids and folks are still living in this chilly evening now.
- 2:02:00But after Henry's last attack, a lot of folks have to go high, high, and center field.
- 2:02:04There's no runners there.
- 2:02:06It's now late Sunday, and that was a good point to check it out.
- 2:02:10A lot of folks waited for Henry to hit one more, and now they're beginning to wait for the exit.
- 2:02:19Well, there's a new book out that's just been handed to us, the Pro Bowl hitter,
- 2:02:26and the title is simply Aaron, by Henry Aaron, with Berman Bisher, fine sports writer here in Atlanta.
- 2:02:34So the autobiography of the greatest pro-run hitter of the modern era is out.
- 2:02:39We have a nice copy of it here.
- 2:02:42Let's have Henry autograph that one for me.
- 2:02:51All right, there are two outs.
- 2:02:56Waiting as the catcher, Corral, takes the number ball for a strike.
- 2:03:00Runner at first base, Dusty Baker.
- 2:03:08Last throw to first, not in time, Charlie Hook.
- 2:03:13Trying to keep the runner on bottom of the seventh, the break through seven to four.
- 2:03:18The Dodgers would like to spoil the party, but they've been playing a little loose out there tonight.
- 2:03:24They're just playing a power tip back into the strike two, and catcher Rick Corral.
- 2:03:30The Dodgers were 6-0 tonight.
- 2:03:34That's five to the high of Lars Speer.
- 2:03:39Rather than worry about four to the third tonight.
- 2:03:44They just couldn't forget that.
- 2:03:47Now again, Charlie Hust working, Corral waiting, catch on the way.
- 2:03:50Knuckle ball high, one ball, two strikes.
- 2:04:00A one and two count.
- 2:04:07Now, a four to first, not in time.
- 2:04:21One and two again.
- 2:04:24There's a five ball in the right field coming up to Crawford.
- 2:04:27A catch to the outfield tower of the side.
- 2:04:30So they're all going in the seventh.
- 2:04:32Runner in the front, and one left on the floor at the end of seventh.
- 2:04:36Atlanta seven and the Dodgers have four.
- 2:04:41We have a couple of changes for the break.
- 2:04:43Leo Foster takes over second.
- 2:04:45Aaron comes out of the game.
- 2:04:47We have Baker going into the outfield in right.
- 2:04:49Gar goes to left field, and Lohan offices the new center builder.
- 2:04:54Those changes for all the Braves, as we go along into the evening,
- 2:04:58the Dodgers need really to catch up against Crawford.
- 2:05:01One play, let's go back to the beginning.
- 2:05:03There are two things occurring here tonight that should be reported.
- 2:05:06One would be a concern to the Braves, a little perhaps it is just the weather.
- 2:05:12First, of course, Aaron hit the home run.
- 2:05:14But since then, there has been a constant exodus.
- 2:05:18By the time this game ends, the ball plot will have just a few spectators in it.
- 2:05:24And it's on the same night that they had the largest crowd in the stadium history, 53,775.
- 2:05:31It will be interesting indeed to see how many will be here tomorrow night.
- 2:05:36They had an advance of about 12,000, and we'll see the turnstile count tomorrow evening.
- 2:05:45The Braves make a couple of changes, and Foster will hit in Johnson's spot,
- 2:05:54and Orfus will hit in Aaron's spot.
- 2:05:57That's a nice thing for a kid named Roland Orfus.
- 2:06:00He comes in tonight, and he technically replaces Aaron,
- 2:06:04and he'll hit in Aaron's spot the night that Aaron hits number 715.
- 2:06:09Now, he can tell us, folks, about, yeah, tonight Aaron broke it,
- 2:06:12why I took over for him and finished up hitting number 4.
- 2:06:17Capra's fastball is outside for 1-1-0.
- 2:06:271-0 to count.
- 2:06:30Capra, who has done a great job of traveling the Dodgers,
- 2:06:33stuck out the side, and the 7th Ferguson swings and goes to get it.
- 2:06:42The weather, as cold and as rainy as it was, did not take the edge off the night.
- 2:06:48It has been a magnificent evening for Aaron and for baseball,
- 2:06:53particularly for the 50,000 who came here to see it, and their wishes were granted.
- 2:07:02Capra, back to the plate, and a little slider is on the outside corner for the second strike.
- 2:07:10Seven runs and only four hits, but one of them heard round the world.
- 2:07:16Seven runs and only four hits, but one of them heard round the world.
- 2:07:20The Dodgers, four runs, seven hits, and a half a dozen errors.
- 2:07:24It's about as bad as they've played in any game in a long time.
- 2:07:28Two-two pitch coming up, half-flang with the topside, for a decent follow-up lead.
- 2:07:41Three and two to count to Joe Ferguson.
- 2:07:46Capra on the rubber.
- 2:07:50The other is shaking no, now nods yes.
- 2:07:52And the three-two pitch fastball flung on a missed strike three. Capra has faced five men,
- 2:07:59and he has struck out four of them.
- 2:08:05And the batter is Willie Crawford, grounded out, struck out, in field single and short a run.
- 2:08:14Willie won for three.
- 2:08:19Now and out of the game, and his mother and father are no doubt with him, along with his wife.
- 2:08:26And he will be holding a press conference after the game.
- 2:08:30We will try, and of course I'm sure you'll understand there will be a tremendous amount of post-game confusion
- 2:08:36and hubbub as the writers, photographers, newspaper, newsreel men, television men, radio men,
- 2:08:43they will jam a room downstairs, and we will try to cover it for you.
- 2:08:48And he's gone down just to do that.
- 2:08:51Just stay with us. The Henry Aaron Knight is not over.
- 2:08:55The one-one pitch fastball outside ball two, two and one.
- 2:09:01In the Dodger Bowl, Ben Jim Brewer is loosening up.
- 2:09:08Plus Capra recently purchased by the Braves.
- 2:09:14Here's the two-one pitch to Crawford, a half-swing foul on the count two and two.
- 2:09:21Seven to four in favor of the Braves, top of the eighth inning.
- 2:09:35Capra looks down to get a sign from Vic Carell, the catcher.
- 2:09:41The infield of Mike Lum and Leo Foster, Marty Perez and Darrell Evans,
- 2:09:46the outfield of Ralph Dahl, Roland Office and Dusty Baker.
- 2:09:52Ron Reed is a pitcher of record.
- 2:09:55He went out a winner, and Capra's trying to preserve it for him.
- 2:10:00The Dicks have type three called, and so Capra is on the remarkable side.
- 2:10:07They're struck out five, facing six batters.
- 2:10:12And the batter is Ron Tse.
- 2:10:20Ron Tse hit back to the box, wide to center, and single. He's one for three.
- 2:10:30Fastball low, backhanded by Carell for one, one and all.
- 2:10:36That strong breeze to right field has been with us all night.
- 2:10:43Now the one-all part is low. Two and all to count to Ron Tse.
- 2:11:00Now the two-half pitch to Tse is a high chopper to third.
- 2:11:04The Ducks are in the eight, the end is seven and a half,
- 2:11:11Atlanta seven and the Dodgers four.
- 2:11:17Once again to remind you that we will stay with the Dodgers radio network
- 2:11:21right after this ballgame and pick up what the Dodgers may provide for us
- 2:11:27following in the conversation with Hank Aaron in the Atlanta dressing room.
- 2:11:32We told you earlier how the San Francisco Dodgers knocked off the Reds.
- 2:11:36We'll tell you again, Gary Maddux slammed in all four Giants scores
- 2:11:40in a home run and a single to lead the Giants to a four-to-three win over Cincinnati.
- 2:11:44That's the win as the Giants fourth of the year, Cincinnati is two and two.
- 2:11:48The American League game involved the New York Yankees and the Cleveland Indians.
- 2:11:53And the Yankees, scoring heavily in the late innings for the third straight game,
- 2:11:57swept their opening series with the Indians with a five-to-three victory.
- 2:12:02George Medich was relieved in the ninth after giving up a leadoff single
- 2:12:06and he picked up the win.
- 2:12:08What proved to be the winning run in that game was scored in the seventh inning
- 2:12:11against left-hander Tom Hildendorf with one out Ron Bloomberg
- 2:12:14and Greg Nettles for runners-up first and third,
- 2:12:17and Bloomberg scored with Bill Sudeikis for his medal.
- 2:12:23In the eighth inning, Atlanta leading the Dodgers 7-4.
- 2:12:28The Dodgers with Al Downing, and of course Downing served it up,
- 2:12:32number 7-15 in the fourth inning to Henry Ahn.
- 2:12:36Then Downing, relieved by Marshall and then Huff.
- 2:12:39Mike Marshall did a tremendous job in relief, but the Dodgers just kicked the ball around.
- 2:12:46However, it is Downing's game to lose.
- 2:12:52Scott Hoff worked the last inning, and he'll be pitching to Marty Perez,
- 2:12:57then Buzz Capra, and the leadoff man Ralph Gah.
- 2:13:09Scully Hoff ready and the knuckleball is inside, ball one, 1-0.
- 2:13:15The press room looks like a scene out of the front page.
- 2:13:20Riders hanging away on the typewriters, on the telephone.
- 2:13:24What a sight.
- 2:13:25They come back into Charlie Huff, and he flips over to Garvey, one away.
- 2:13:32The battle will be Buzz Capra.
- 2:13:35The Buzz Capra right-hand batter, and Charlie Huff looks down to get his eye,
- 2:13:56and the knuckleball is ready and delivers, and the first one is low and away, ball one.
- 2:14:01Tomorrow night, John Sutton will go after his second victory.
- 2:14:10The next one is low, ball two, 2-0.
- 2:14:19Warm-up time tomorrow will be at 4-10 and game time at 4-30.
- 2:14:24The two outfits, low, ball three.
- 2:14:26The Braves delayed the start of the game tonight by a half-hour because the pregame ceremony is honoring them.
- 2:14:34They'll go back to the normal starting time, which means a 4-30 game, and the airtime for the warm-up show at 4-10.
- 2:14:42The three outfits is low, ball four.
- 2:14:45The Capra scores a one-hour walk, and the battle will be Ralph Garve.
- 2:14:56I'm not sure of the official start of the game.
- 2:14:59It certainly wasn't 8-0-5 local time.
- 2:15:05It's about two and a half hours old.
- 2:15:11Ralph Garve is back to the box, a board on an air out, a scoring flag wall and sacrifice.
- 2:15:19Garve is 0-2.
- 2:15:21He takes a knuckle high that gets away from Ferguson to the backstop.
- 2:15:26The Capra to second base and holding there.
- 2:15:32It'll be a pass ball charged to Joe Ferguson.
- 2:15:40One-on-one recount.
- 2:15:53Now up to a stretch.
- 2:15:54Looks to second, works to play.
- 2:15:56The knuckle is long on and is one-on-one.
- 2:16:12Off again, looks at Capra, works to play way outside, one-handed by Ferguson, wearing that big waffle mitt.
- 2:16:23Two-on-one recount.
- 2:16:32Ralph has a look at second base, and the 2-1 pitch.
- 2:16:35Garve takes a dancer on the inside corner for a strike and nods his head yes.
- 2:16:40Good pitch.
- 2:16:41He bailed out.
- 2:16:42The two got the corner.
- 2:16:48Grave scored once in the second.
- 2:16:50The Dodgers got three in the third.
- 2:16:52The Graves scored four times in the fourth, and the big moment was Aaron hitting a two-run home run.
- 2:17:00It was the first time that he swung the bats tonight.
- 2:17:04The first time he swung the bat in Cincinnati was a home run for 7-14.
- 2:17:09And the first time he let it fly tonight, it was number 7-15, because he walked without swinging the bat in the second inning.
- 2:17:17And the first pitch to Aaron in the fourth inning was 4-1, and then he swung and that was it.
- 2:17:26The 2-2 pitch is Chase and Garve looking awkward trying to flag that knuckleball.
- 2:17:33Down he goes.
- 2:17:35And the batter is Michael Arme.
- 2:17:37Lam is 0-4-4.
- 2:17:41The game, the score, the turtles are almost incidental, of course, to Henry Aaron Knight here.
- 2:17:52John Knight, Don Crompton, trying to get the Dodgers back on the right track.
- 2:17:56They've committed six errors tonight.
- 2:17:59The pitch is low, 0-1, 1-0.
- 2:18:05Well, the Dodgers have a tough break after the beautiful weather in Los Angeles, where they went three straight from San Diego.
- 2:18:12They come over here and, oh, what a night.
- 2:18:15Tornado warning, cold wind, rain, the one-hole fit, one on and this one-on-one.
- 2:18:23The field littered with papers, paper bags, partly from the wind and partly from the crowd's enthusiasm when Aaron hits the home run.
- 2:18:36Here's the one-one pitch.
- 2:18:39The Dodgers fouled away in the count one and two.
- 2:19:00One ball and two strikes to Mike Lam.
- 2:19:03Darrell Evans on deck.
- 2:19:08Four atlante here in the eighth inning.
- 2:19:11When the Dodgers bat in the ninth, they'll have Garvey, Russell, and a hitter for Huff.
- 2:19:18Charlie Knuckler fouled away.
- 2:19:23One and two.
- 2:19:37The eighth inning runs four hits for Atlanta.
- 2:19:40Four runs, seven hits, and six errors for the Dodgers.
- 2:19:46Now the one-two pitch on the way.
- 2:19:48Knuckler ball punched down to say Ron is up with it.
- 2:19:51The long throw to Garvey in time.
- 2:19:54So the eighth inning no runs, no hits to man.
- 2:19:56Lesson at the end of it.
- 2:19:58Grade seven Dodgers four.
- 2:20:02So I've told you about the National League and the American League.
- 2:20:05Of course there's a few more things going on.
- 2:20:08That baseball, notably basketball, the National Basketball Association playoffs on Sunday,
- 2:20:14New York 106, capital 105, New York leads that series three games to two.
- 2:20:20Boston and Buffalo also in that Eastern Division, those two teams did not play,
- 2:20:25and that series is tied at two each.
- 2:20:27In the Western Conference playoffs, Detroit tied that series at two games a piece
- 2:20:32with Chicago by knocking off the both 102 to 87.
- 2:20:36Milwaukee clinched its series against Los Angeles by beating the Lakers 114 to 92,
- 2:20:43and the Milwaukee wins that series four games to one.
- 2:20:47So the Milwaukee Bucks will go into the National Basketball Association championship,
- 2:20:53or actually it will be the Western Conference playoff against the winner of the Chicago-Detroit series.
- 2:20:59That was it, Sunday, nothing scheduled Monday in the NBA.
- 2:21:03In the American Basketball Association, just one game played Sunday, New York 116, Virginia 88.
- 2:21:10Nice running at Latter-Lating the Dodgers, seven to four,
- 2:21:14and in the ninth the Dodgers will have Steve Harvey followed by Bill Russell,
- 2:21:19and we'll see about a hitter for Charlie Hough.
- 2:21:22There's Campra on the phenomenal side, it's stuck outside at two innings.
- 2:21:27Smallish right-hander, formerly with New York, trying to finish it up and hand Ron Lee to victory.
- 2:21:34Steve Harvey, aboard on an infield single, has fouled out and hit it to a fourth place hit.
- 2:21:46So to the ninth, first game of the four game series,
- 2:21:58the Dodgers playing four in Atlanta, three in Houston, and two in Cincinnati.
- 2:22:04And Buzz Campra, ready to work.
- 2:22:09Right-hander into the wind-up, and the pitch to Garvey, breaking ball in the third ball, one and oh.
- 2:22:27The next pitch to Steve is in there for a strike, one and one.
- 2:22:37And when we get the postgame show, we're going to try and bring you all the excitement
- 2:22:43in the Aaron interview as Garvey five-run onto the right and out of play,
- 2:22:48rattling down below in the count one and two.
- 2:22:52Henry Aaron will hold a press conference for all the writers and media in attendance,
- 2:22:59and boy, there are a lot of them.
- 2:23:01And Jerry will be down there, hopefully, able to get it all to you.
- 2:23:05So stay right with us.
- 2:23:07The one-two pitch is hung on and missed by three,
- 2:23:10and Buzz Campra has struck out a half a dozen of the seven-outs that he has gotten.
- 2:23:19The batter is Bill Russell, double-grounded out twice.
- 2:23:23He's one for three.
- 2:23:32Russell has a look at a pitch high and outside, four-one, one and oh.
- 2:23:41Now, Capra is one-oh pitch, fastball in there for a strike, one and one.
- 2:23:50The throw from Vic Carell goes out into center field, and Marty Brez is a way out to get it.
- 2:23:59One ball and one strike to count.
- 2:24:02One down in the ninth inning, seven to four Atlanta.
- 2:24:06On Henry's ninth, Aaron is number seven, one, five in the fourth inning.
- 2:24:14Is it more home runs in the big leagues than any other man in history as he passes Dave tonight?
- 2:24:23Boy, the city really went on its ear for him in a pregame ceremony,
- 2:24:26and then they went wild when he finally hit it in the fourth inning.
- 2:24:31Here's the one-one pitch to Bill Russell, fastball over at the knees for a strike, one and two.
- 2:24:46Capra into the windup, the one-two pitch is hung on and foul back and out of play.
- 2:24:58Seven-four Atlanta in the ninth.
- 2:25:05Dodgers one-sixth out of eight played here last year.
- 2:25:08They won all nine of the games played at Dodger Stadium.
- 2:25:12One-two slider is hit wide at the tricky hop, Evan stays with it and gets it.
- 2:25:18The Dodgers down at their last out, and it'll be Manny Mota coming up to bat for Charlie Hopp.
- 2:25:35So Manny Mota batting for Charlie Hopp, and for Manny will be his first appearance of the year.
- 2:25:46The Dodgers already used Juan Joshua and Lee Lacey as pinch hitters.
- 2:25:51They each struck out, and so Mota is the third pinch hitter.
- 2:25:57Capra delivers fastball, hits the right side of field towards the alley, but coming over the circuit, up backhanded on the line.
- 2:26:06Fine running catch by Dusty Baker.
- 2:26:09And so on Henry's night, the Braves have beaten the Dodgers seven to four.
- 2:26:14We'll have the turtles right after this message.
- 2:26:18And we invite you to stay with us on the AFRCS Parade of Sports because the Dodger Network, along with hundreds of radio and television and press people, will be in the Atlanta clubhouse.
- 2:26:32Or actually, they probably will not be in the clubhouse.
- 2:26:35They said they have a special room designated for the interview with Hank Aaron after this ballgame.
- 2:26:41And so don't you go away, be with us, because we're going to stay right where the Dodgers network and tune in as they talk with Hank Aaron, who has hit career home run number 715,
- 2:26:54obviously the all-time Major League Hiving, Babe Ruth's record of 714.
- 2:27:00Al Downing of the Dodgers, they pitchers threw that home run pitch.
- 2:27:04Said he would not change his way of pitching and working the ballgame.
- 2:27:07He said there's a small chance of his walking Aaron, which he actually did do the first time Aaron came to bat.
- 2:27:13Downing says he is excited but also knows he has a job to do.
- 2:27:17And Aaron hit two home runs against Downing previously to this season.
- 2:27:25The Dodgers on the ballgame for Atlanta, seven runs, only four hits.
- 2:27:29One of them, Aaron's blow, and no errors.
- 2:27:32For the Dodgers, four runs, seven hits and six errors.
- 2:27:36Aaron has played a role for the year and for quite a while.
- 2:27:40And their inability to pick up the ball or hold it or throw it accurately certainly contributed heavily to Atlanta's victory.
- 2:27:48Tomorrow night, Don Suckma will try and get them back on the track.
- 2:27:51Now, if you possibly can, well, stay right with us because the story is not over yet.
- 2:27:56We've already heard one from Henry Aaron.
- 2:27:59We're going to hear a lot more from him in the special press conference which will be held in a small room put aside just for that duty.
- 2:28:08And it's alongside the Atlanta Braves clubhouse.
- 2:28:11So stay with it and we'll try and pick it all up and send it back to you because it's been quite a night here in Atlanta.
- 2:28:19Once again, the final score of the ballgame, the Braves seven and the Dodgers four.
- 2:28:24Well, now this is Dennis Cully along with Jerry Doggett inviting you to stay tuned for the postgame show coming right up.
