Born October 26, 1911, Mahalia Jackson carried gospel around the world and put her voice to work for civil rights alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
At the March on Washington, she sang “I Been ’Buked and I Been Scorned.” Imagine that testimony rising over a crowd demanding dignity. She gave sound to something this country needed to hear.
