- 0:00Welcome everyone to the Becker's Healthcare podcast series.
- 0:02I'm Mariah Muhammad, writer and moderator with Becker's
- 0:05Healthcare. And I'm thrilled to have with me
- 0:07today doctor Jean Pierre Mobasser, president of Goodman
- 0:10Campbell.
- 0:11Doctor, welcome to the podcast. We're very excited
- 0:13to have you join us today. To To
- 0:15get us started, would you mind please introducing
- 0:16yourself and telling us a bit about your
- 0:18background?
- 0:19Sure. Absolutely. Thank you for having me. My
- 0:21name is Jean Pierre Mobasser. I'm a neurosurgeon
- 0:24here at Goodman Campbell Brain and Spine.
- 0:26I've been here since 02/2004,
- 0:28so going on my twenty first year at
- 0:30this point.
- 0:31I've been the president of our group for
- 0:33the past eight years.
- 0:35I've also been a past president of the
- 0:37Society for Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery as my
- 0:40subspecialty within neurosurgery is minimally invasive spine surgery.
- 0:45Wonderful. Thank you so much for giving us
- 0:46that background. So what are some of your
- 0:48top priorities for for the, rest of the
- 0:51year?
- 0:52Yeah. So I guess since we're starting the
- 0:54year, this is a good point to discuss
- 0:56our plans for 02/2025.
- 0:58And to start with, we were fortunate enough
- 1:01to get approved to have a Goodman Campbell
- 1:03neurosurgery residency.
- 1:05This is actually a pretty big accomplishment as
- 1:08ninety nine percent of neurosurgery residencies are affiliated
- 1:10with the major academic
- 1:12center, and we do not have that current
- 1:14relationship.
- 1:15We do have other hospital relationships that are
- 1:17academic in nature, but this makes us one
- 1:20of two groups in the country that has
- 1:22a neurosurgery,
- 1:23residency
- 1:24without a major academic affiliation.
- 1:27And so we're quite quite proud of that.
- 1:28And that'll be starting in July.
- 1:30So a lot of our time is getting
- 1:32set up and prepared,
- 1:33for this.
- 1:34The good news is our group has been
- 1:35teaching residents on and off for forty years,
- 1:38so this is not new to us. So
- 1:40we have a lot of experience,
- 1:41faculty
- 1:42to handle this.
- 1:44Our other priority is gonna be growing strategically
- 1:47into markets,
- 1:49both inside Indiana and outside Indiana that need
- 1:52neurosurgeons.
- 1:54We currently have two neurosurgeons
- 1:56outside of, Indiana and Wisconsin with ProHealth.
- 2:00Our interventional neuroradiologists,
- 2:03help out in Boise, Idaho, and so they
- 2:05rotate out there to help with the interventional
- 2:08care. And then we're, scattered throughout the state
- 2:11of Indiana. So I think continuing to look
- 2:13for strategic partnerships both within Indiana and outside
- 2:17Indiana that makes sense for our group and
- 2:19for the hospitals,
- 2:21where we can fulfill a need that they
- 2:23don't currently have.
- 2:25Other thing that we're gonna really have to
- 2:26focus on over the next year is continuing
- 2:28to grow ancillary sources of revenue.
- 2:31As we all know, reimbursement gets more and
- 2:34more difficult for, independent,
- 2:36physician practices
- 2:38while the cost to deliver care continue to
- 2:40rise.
- 2:41I think,
- 2:42physicians in general, one of the few professionals
- 2:45to continue to make less money as time
- 2:47goes on. And so we have to find
- 2:49other ancillary sources of revenue so we can
- 2:52continue to attract
- 2:54worldwide talent, the best talent for neurosurgical
- 2:57care.
- 2:58Because otherwise, we're competing with hospital employment, which
- 3:00is capable of paying them more than we
- 3:02are,
- 3:03just based on the revenue and,
- 3:05the the,
- 3:07overhead model that we deal with. So those
- 3:10are gonna be the sources
- 3:11of, our our priorities
- 3:13for the rest of this 02/2025,
- 3:17and, we're looking forward to it.
- 3:20Yeah. Definitely. Well, congratulations
- 3:22on that residency.
- 3:23It definitely sounds like,
- 3:25everyone kinda
- 3:26has many things that will be,
- 3:28taken care of for this year. Are there
- 3:31any other programs or initiatives that have been
- 3:33the most needle moving for you,
- 3:36in this past year, 2024,
- 3:37anything that you're looking forward to in 2025?
- 3:41Yeah. There are two things. I'd say if
- 3:43you had to look at something that's been
- 3:45helpful on the ancillary revenue side, it's been,
- 3:49looking for co management opportunities
- 3:51with hospitals where hospitals
- 3:53have a need or somebody to come in
- 3:56and organize their neurosurgical
- 3:58care
- 3:59and try and help them understand their markets
- 4:03strategically and then sort of help and and
- 4:06create a win win situation between our group
- 4:08and the hospital.
- 4:10And so we've been expanding those again up
- 4:12in Wisconsin and out in Idaho. And, so
- 4:15I think those are have been
- 4:18sort of needle movers for us this past
- 4:20year, and we gotta we have to continue
- 4:22to look for those opportunities
- 4:24with hospitals that have that need and recognize
- 4:26the value that we bring in the expertise,
- 4:29which they don't have.
- 4:31The other thing, which I can't talk about
- 4:33yet, we can probably revisit this in six
- 4:35months, but there's another thing that our group
- 4:37is working on,
- 4:38that I think may be a needle mover
- 4:40for us, but it's about six months away
- 4:43from being viable. So you and I can
- 4:45talk in about six months.
- 4:47Yes. I'll definitely circle back with you, in
- 4:50the next six months.
- 4:52And then also, doctor, the last thing I
- 4:54wanted to ask before I let you go
- 4:55today, how are you thinking about growth in
- 4:58member experience,
- 5:00overall?
- 5:01Yeah. So I assume when you say member,
- 5:03you mean patient.
- 5:05And so if we're talking about patient care,
- 5:06that's actually
- 5:08the most important thing to our group. Our
- 5:10group is very centered on patient care and
- 5:12delivering the patient best patient care experience.
- 5:16That's always been a priority here at Goodman
- 5:18Campbell,
- 5:19creating a culture where everybody within our group
- 5:23is centered around the patient and, the experience
- 5:26they're gonna have when they first contact our
- 5:29group, when they first call, when they get
- 5:30somebody on the phone, when they come to
- 5:32the desk,
- 5:33when they're roomed, when they see the physician,
- 5:36all of the preoperative care in addition to
- 5:38the surgical and postoperative care. And so that's
- 5:41always been something that we prioritized, and it's
- 5:43it's basically delivering an experience that patients feel
- 5:47very good about. And we've been quite successful
- 5:49in that. I routinely hear from patients and
- 5:51families about how,
- 5:54their their visit to our group and their
- 5:55interaction with our group has been one of
- 5:57the best medical experiences they've had amongst all
- 6:00of their their patient care situations. So,
- 6:04that is something that we continue to focus
- 6:06on.
- 6:07It's very hard to provide that high level
- 6:09of patient touch and care
- 6:12when costs are going up and reimbursement's going
- 6:14down, but at this point, we are still
- 6:16very much committed to that.
- 6:18We're continually looking for neurosurgeons who fit within
- 6:21our culture and understand and want to make
- 6:24fit into a culture that prioritizes
- 6:26this sort of patient care experience and understand
- 6:29that what we do is not about us
- 6:30as neurosurgeons.
- 6:32It's about the patient and helping them. And
- 6:34we try try and strive for an organization
- 6:37where everybody sort of understands and feels connected
- 6:40to that mission,
- 6:42not just the surgeons or the allied health,
- 6:44but also the people who work,
- 6:47in the back office and making them feel
- 6:49connected to the kind of patient care experience
- 6:51that we deliver so they can feel really
- 6:53good about what they are doing on a
- 6:55day to day basis.
- 6:57The neurosurgeons we we look for in our
- 6:59group, they have to be extremely hardworking.
- 7:01They need to be technically excellent at what
- 7:03they do. They need to be patient focused,
- 7:06and they need to be team players. We
- 7:08work together hand in hand, and having people
- 7:10that work and operate together and and help
- 7:13each other in clinic,
- 7:14all those things are really important to the
- 7:16to our our group at this point.
- 7:19The last thing I'd say is we, currently
- 7:22participate in national quality registries. That's been a
- 7:25big part of our group, and we were
- 7:26actually one of the Vanguard
- 7:28groups in founding the neurosurgery,
- 7:30quality outcomes database, in its inception.
- 7:33And we think that continuing to track patient
- 7:36reported outcomes is incredibly important because it's one
- 7:39thing to operate on people and see them
- 7:41back in clinic,
- 7:42but it's another thing to really look,
- 7:44longer term and understand how our care makes
- 7:47a difference in the patient's lives.
- 7:49And so those quality,
- 7:51registry outcomes are very important. Getting the patient's
- 7:54feedback is something that we continue to strive
- 7:57to do.
- 7:58Our group is very focused on clinical care,
- 8:01education, and research.
- 8:03We have a research relationship with Purdue University,
- 8:07and, we have several faculty that do projects
- 8:09jointly with the with the,
- 8:11PhDs and, at Purdue University. And then we
- 8:15also teach
- 8:16medical students from Marion University, a local,
- 8:20program here in Indianapolis.
- 8:22And so I think,
- 8:24all of these things contribute to our overall
- 8:27sense of the patient experience and understanding our
- 8:30mission and trying to stick to that mission
- 8:33and making sure we don't deviate is our
- 8:35goals and our plans and and our focus.
- 8:38Yeah. Absolutely. Thank you so much for those
- 8:40final thoughts, doctor. This has definitely been a
- 8:42very informative discussion. So I wanna thank you
- 8:44so much for coming on, Becker's, and I
- 8:46look forward to connecting with you again soon.
- 8:49Absolutely.
