- 0:00[rock music] Hey, good evening, fellow cycling podcast listeners, or whatever we do on this show.
- 0:26Full Spectrum Cycling number 124. One two-four. So next week being the 125, we're gonna tie our all-time record from the other sh- from the Weekly Dose show. Oh, yes. And then we'll sashay past it the following week.
- 0:41Doesn't it have a clever name like s- not sesquicentennial or... There's something, I know. For being a buck 50, not your... Yeah. Per buck, yeah. Sesquicentennial? Something like that. Well, that may be. That may be it.
- 0:52An issue. That might be it. It's not centennial. It's not bicentennial. It's one of those names. It's sas- That's my homework assignment for myself... it's, it's Sasquatch and, and- I will say to myself... centennial...
- 1:01to myself. So yeah, so yeah, so yeah, what's going on? So I know what's going on. We got JK here. Hi. Hello. We have, uh, Mr. Tony Burger. Yep. And Sven, your host, as always. Well, co-host I guess you could say.
- 1:18It was a, it was an, it was an interesting weekend with the Phil Van Valkenburg Connector Trail dedication at the former Matt Kenseth Museum, now winery in Cambridge, Wisconsin. Oh, wasn't aware of that.
- 1:35I wasn't either until- [laughs]... Mr. Lunz pointed it out because it's on Kenseth Way, which I just thought, well, he's from Cambridge too, and maybe they just named the street, but apparently- Gotcha...
- 1:44I don't know, the museum didn't really... E- either they moved it or it just didn't, it didn't hang on maybe through the pandemic or something. I don't know. Interesting. Gotta look into that. Interesting.
- 1:53You know, Wisconsin's NASCAR king [smells] Matt Kenseth, or Dick Trickle, or whomever else comes out of Wisconsin. [laughs] Anyway, so the Phil Van Valkenburg thing was pretty cool.
- 2:04It was, um, couple hundred people there. Lots a, like Jerry Pearce, the former Rainbow Jersey guy, now retired in Florida, came up. There were, there were people, uh, Hollywood came over from Minnesota.
- 2:16Judge Jerry and Executioner came down from Hayward. Nice. [laughs] Um, yeah, there was a lot of people that... And, you know, Gary Crandall from the, the Chequamegon Fat Forty.
- 2:25There were a lot of people that really have been affected by Phil over the years, including, including me because we took Steel is Real over that he started. Yeah. And, uh, after he had a stroke- He was part of that...
- 2:37or two he was kinda not up to the task anymore, and handed it off to a friend of ours, and then we, we jumped in a few years ago. So Steel is Real is happening in 2021, Oc- August 28th. And it's fun. Saw Mr.
- 2:50Ziegel there. He's, he's gonna come over. He acquired, uh, Spinner's 36-inch Coker- Nice... whatever you call that big- [laughs]... that, that big-wheeled bike that the- I love that bike...
- 3:01yeah, so Spinner didn't wanna move it- That is so fun to ride... from, from Madison to Decorah, so he sold it to Pat. Nice. [laughs] Good score. That thing was the most ridden bike. We, it was...
- 3:11After the dedication ceremony, there was a band playing and stuff, and people were milling about 'cause we went on a ride with, with Phil. He has a- Trike...
- 3:19kind of a customized trike that has a, a e-motor on the back and Georgia on the front, and, um, it was fun to do a, a, a ride with him. And while we were milling about, that Coker got more rides than- Oh, yeah...
- 3:32anything else there. [laughs] It was like, "Oh, how does that thing ride?" It's like- Like-... well, it doesn't really wanna turn, but you can- It rides like a dream going forward. [laughs] Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 3:40It'll roll over just about anything. [laughs] And, uh, he got new tires for it. That'll be nice. And I think that, that thing was a lot of fun. I, I m-...
- 3:48Was it last year's Steel is Real, I think, that it was when, uh, when there was the little clown bike, Dave's little clown bike- Yeah... and that big thing? Yeah.
- 3:54It's like the littlest bike you can ride, and probably close to the biggest bike you can- Indeed. Indeed... probably physically actually ride.
- 4:01That's when he, uh, that's when he disappeared on my, I think I was riding the Raleigh, my RSW 16. I'm like, I turned around, my bike was gone. I'm like, "Oh, where the hell's my bike?"
- 4:11And Chewy's like, "Well, there's only one bike left." And I'm like, "It's the Coker." [laughs] And I caught up, I caught up with, with Jess, and I'm like, "You due... Have you..."
- 4:19I've said, "Have you found second gear yet?" He's like, "What?" I'm like, "Oh, so I was riding the, um, uh, it'll come to me. It'll come to me. It's a Dutch bike that's-" Do, do some brain thinking over there. Yeah.
- 4:32[laughs] Not a VanMoof. Sparta 880- Not a VanMoof... with a two-speed kickback. Oh, right on. And he's like, "Whoa, it's got two speeds?" And all of a sudden he rips past me. He's like, [laughs] "This thing's fast."
- 4:41I'm like, "It's fun." That... Well, that's that little-wheeled one, isn't it? It's a... Yeah, that's a, that's a- It's like a fold?... 12. Is it a folder? Nope. It's a separator. Ah.
- 4:49You unscrew the headset and the front end separates from the rear end of the bike. It's a really cool design. Stamped steel. I mean, it's as- [laughs] As bare, as bare bones as it gets... yeah, it, it's crazy. It's cool.
- 5:03Tony alerted us to something the other day via the- Yeah... text messaging that I was super excited to hear about. It was last night. It was last night, that Kaiju is coming back- Oh, yeah... to Milwaukee. Go.
- 5:17What's the date? September 18th, I think. At X-Ray Lounge? I- Arcade. I- X-Ray Arcade Lounge? I, I- No? Burger?... shared that reluctantly on the Facebook. I saw that, yeah. I know. I, yeah.
- 5:28I'm like, "I don't think I wanna tell people." [laughs] I heard ab- [laughs] I, I heard, I heard about it, like, two and a half-ish weeks ago, and I was like, "I'm just gonna, yeah- I mean, it, it has-...
- 5:37hold down on this one." I was like, "Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, it's there. A lot can happen between now-" I- "... and September in the world."
- 5:44What do you- I'm still of that mindset, so I didn't wanna get my hopes completely up yet. What do you think they'd charge for a show? $12 to $15. Well, $12?
- 5:53No, I mean- Oh, to do, to do a sh- I, I considered trying to get in touch with them and do, like, a, our grand opening party at the new shop- Mm-hmm...
- 6:02and have them play in the parking lot there, but- I'm not sure that we're quite fiscally [laughs] ready for a daikaiju show- [laughs]... in the parking lot.
- 6:12This, this, this move has been a little bit challenging on the, uh- My mantles... money front, what with, you know, not having...
- 6:19I couldn't even sell a- uh, your buddy, your buddy, Ben, came in and picked up his wheels, which was nice, Mr. Case. Oh, that w- yeah, yeah.
- 6:29Yeah, so he got a set of Velocity 650b, Aileron Pro, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, and he was gonna set them up tubeless, and I go, "I have... No, I don't have tubelessness [laughs] in a box somewhere.
- 6:40I don't have- Sorry... tubeless sealant to give him, and I don't have any valve." I was like, "Ah, this is really... It's challenging, 'cause everything's- Well-... in boxes right now. Yeah, yeah.
- 6:48So we're gonna, we're gonna get out of here sooner than later so I can start opening boxes and finding stuff again. Yeah, I want my lock back from Hoski. Yeah, I, I don't know where that went. Yeah, I know.
- 6:58It's in a box somewhere. [laughs] Yeah, I know. But there's a treasure in every box. Well, it's gonna be like Chris- At a bike shop, yeah...
- 7:03it's gonna be like, yeah, it's gonna be like Christmas every box I open, 'cause I did, I did, um,
- 7:09label them with what's in them to a certain extent, but there was always a little extra room, so I stuffed a little surprise in there. I'm like, "Oh, [laughs] here's where that thing is." Mm-hmm.
- 7:19"I didn't know where that was. Now I found it." So yeah, that's a good thing. We'll be moving all of the next couple weeks, but, you know. We'll get there. We'll get there.
- 7:31Uh, uh, I got, I got locks installed on the podcast room door, so we can now move the gear over there. Nice. Yep. And we're- Power? What's that? Power. Well, I don't know about that.
- 7:41You don't wanna get all carried away with power. [laughs] That just seems like something that, you know, we've been- That's crazy talk, Tony... we haven't, we haven't had it for so long, I don't know what we...
- 7:49So if we- [clears throat]... if we, so the, we're cutting the internet here at the shop on the 20th of August, so we're gonna have to do the show over there come hell or high water. But I got a new gizmo.
- 8:00Got this RODE, this Podcaster Pro gizmo here- Yeah, they got-... which plugs into the wall. Probably get a battery for it if you wanted to.
- 8:07However, I got a new gizmo that's smaller and more portable and runs on batteries. So we can do it anywhere. So we could do it anywhere, and any way. We'll, we'll do it whether there's power or not. Awesome.
- 8:21But the more activity, I think, that we start showing over there, the more- Motivated?... the more motivated. Well, the transformer's in. They gotta pull wire now, and it, we're not that far away. Okay.
- 8:31I don't know if it's gonna... It'll happen before the end of the month is my hopeful- I'm guessing because that's an-... finger-crossed prediction... that's an industrial building, it can't be Romex.
- 8:39[laughs] It's gotta all be tube and- Yeah, you know, I think- That's cool. That's cool... I think, I don't know if James is gonna help Steve pull it. Are you gonna get your own panel? Yes.
- 8:46My own, my p- my panel, everything's already in, it just needs the feed. Oh, nice. I mean, we're ready to go. It just needs to drop the wires that have the power in them, and then all the outlets- Cool...
- 8:54are already in and everything. Nice. We just need the juice. I got the juice to go around.
- 9:01I was riding around, uh, riding around River Worst here, uh, uh, last couple of days, and I don't know if I never noticed this before, but there are a heck of a lot of squirrely riders out there on the road.
- 9:13They like, y- you know, you, you get the guy that's having fun in the bike lane, and he's weaving back and forth, and you can tell he's under control because it's a controlled weave.
- 9:22But then there's all these weird squirrely people, most of them are on their phone, which- Yep. Yep... I can't believe you're on your phone riding your bike. Yeah, that's, that's- That seems like a door in your face-...
- 9:30absolute moronic... waiting to happen. Yep. Yep. [laughs] So. Oops. Yeah, unbelievable. And I don't want that to happen to you, but I wouldn't be surprised if it did. Door in your face? Yeah.
- 9:39I mean, when you're sitting on your phone, when you're riding no-handed. I mean, I love riding no-hands too, but- Well, at least you're sitting up looking down the road, right? Right, I'm not on the phone.
- 9:48Yeah, that, there was, I mean, more than a few, and I just, maybe I hadn't been aware or looking at it in the past, but I'm just like, "Wow, you people need to be paying a little more attention on a city street with- And then-...
- 9:5830 mile an hour cars going by... and then you got the, you know- I'm semi-guilty... you got the fat guys...
- 10:02but I'm semi-guilty on that, but only, I'm not like, you know, oh, cracking down Humboldt, and I know, da, da, da, da. Yeah. Mm-hmm. You know? When I know that there's nothing around me, okay, let me...
- 10:12And it's to check my music, not- Yeah, but you normally- Right. That's, that's-... still ride in a pretty straight line. Yeah. I mean, it's not like you're bouncing off cars and stuff like that.
- 10:20Well- Except if, if I'm doing that and looking to the left, for some reason, I'm listening to the left. [laughs] I do that when I'm driving too.
- 10:26Unless it's late at- So, w- even lookout motorists on everything, I really can't... late at night after the, the third or fourth stop, it's- Yeah.
- 10:33[laughs] You also gotta watch out for, you know, fat guys riding wheelies too. Yeah. Those guys. Yeah, there's that. And little guys riding wheelies. Yeah.
- 10:40That wheelie crew, that wheelie crew, like, kicked it, like, from Keefe up- They're, they're good... all the way to the damn Locust. They're good. Yeah, they are. And it was on- I'm fixed gears...
- 10:47and it was only just because- Yep. I'm fixed gears... it was a red light, and it was a lot of traffic coming through. So it was time to, time to stop it. Otherwise- They'd have kept right on going... they would have.
- 10:55Hey. Well, yeah. Hey, everybody. Completely. Hey. Hey. Hey, hey, everybody. Hey, caller. Hey, hey, thanks for calling. Who do we have on the line? Hey, caller. Big Sexy. Oh. Yes. Oh.
- 11:06You, you can send him out of town, but you- How, how-... but you can't get rid of him. [laughs] How you doing, Big Sexy? How y'all doing, man?
- 11:15Oh, my God, I, I, um, I'm in Merrill, and, um, it is about a couple hours away from my birthday. Right on, right on.
- 11:23And I've, I've started, um, the n- the New Orlean, the New Orleanian, uh, way is to start eight hours before, and then you go eight hours after your birthday.
- 11:35It, it's your birthday for eight hours before, eight hours after. Well, that's, that's a, that's a new one- Yeah... 'cause normally we just do a solid week. Yeah, birthday week or birthday weekend.
- 11:43Right, well- Or month... yeah, no, no, no, no, no, no. Yeah, we don't- [laughs]... we don't do a solid week. Uh, nobody, nobody gives a fuck that much. Yeah, they do. Yeah, they do.
- 11:50[laughs] But I'll, I'll, I'll tell you what. Hey, why not celebrate? I'll tell you what. Celebrate September, man. Come on.
- 11:55I, I had a lot of time between Milwaukee and Merrill to, uh, to reflect, and I, I'm like, man, we were treated like royalty. I can't thank you guys enough, man. I, I, I think back on it like, man, you know what?
- 12:12Those guys didn't know me at all. Yet, but y'all treated me like family. Y'all treated me like, like, uh, uh, uh, I, I can't, I can't even... I'm, I'm, I'm tearing up here. [laughs] We're from Wisconsin. We do that.
- 12:27Yeah. Yeah. What is the, what is the adage? It was like Wis- like Minnesota nice, but no, Wisconsin, Wisconsin cool, man. [laughs] Yeah, well- Well, we also, we also lucked into the fact that- I'll tell you what-... Mr.
- 12:40James had time- I found-... to hang out with you. That was, that was really cool- Yeah... that he- That was fortunate... was sort of between jobs and- Yeah, no,
- 12:46and, and I'll tell you what, it was equally as cool for me to hang out with y'all because, like, y'all didn't know me shit from shine. Noah, all y'all, all y'all knew was from me calling in,
- 12:58and, and it, it, it worked out, and everything worked out. There, there wa- there wasn't any bullshit drama or nothing like that, blah, blah. We, we all had a great time and, um, I, I, I think, at least I think we did.
- 13:12I mean, I did. [laughs] That's the- So- That's the important thing is- You-... the guests have fun You can pull up a piece of concrete around here anytime you want, man.
- 13:22I've been telling people, like, I, I'm like, in River West, I was treated like royalty. Like, me and Heather walked down the street, they're like, "Oh, here goes the king and the queen. Oh, hey, here..."
- 13:31Us, you know, like, "Hello. How you doing?" Uh, it, it was, it was great. Um, I'll definitely be back. But what I, what I really want, and I really want to just thank, thank everybody for everything.
- 13:46It wa- it was, it was, it was an experience and, and- Anytime... and, and I, I'll never forget it. I'll never forget it, guys. Anytime. All right, man. Anytime. Hey, guess what time- It was fun having you...
- 13:58guess what time it is? Uh-oh. [bell ringing] What time is it? It's, it's- Top of the hill... the top of the hill, top of the hill time. It's secret word time. Ha. [laughs] Scream real loud.
- 14:08Hey, we're still cleaning out the fridge from the 24. There's still a bunch of beer in there, so we're on, we're on dad beer again. Ah. [laughs] We're on dad beer time. There was, there was quite a few left in there.
- 14:17We didn't really, we didn't really hang around the shop. We were at a lot of other spots, but we didn't really stop- I-... in here all that much Maybe it was 'cause we were [laughs] at a lot of other spots.
- 14:26Yeah, yeah, for sure. The only thing I got, I, I, I broke a spoke.
- 14:32I broke a spoke on, uh, between, between the Stevens Point and, between Stevens Point and Wausau, I broke a spoke, and I, I think it was just, it was just because I hit a bump really bad.
- 14:44Was it a silver one or a black one? [laughs] No, it was a silver one. All right, then ours are still holding up. I, I- That's great. [laughs] I, I was, I, that, well, that's...
- 14:54I was gonna come in with that, but it was a silver one. Those black spokes are stronger than the silver spokes. Silver bells. So we gotta get- Tiny silver bells... we, we, we wanna get racial about the spokes?
- 15:05Okay, fine, we can do that. Tiny silver bells, silver spokes. I- It's Christmas in July here... come on, guys. I'm kidding, I'm kidding, I'm kidding, I'm kidding. I, I guess. Come on. Come on, man.
- 15:15[laughs] I'm just jingling keys. [keys jingling] So Big Sexy- Keys... how old are you? Jesus Christ. I, all that... These stupid silver spokes.
- 15:24Yeah, yeah, there's more of them, but, um, the black spokes are holding it together. [laughs] Big Sexy, how old are you gonna be in eight hours? Oh, yeah, um, at, at midnight, uh, at midnight I'm gonna be 44. Right on.
- 15:40Yute. And, uh, yeah, a- and yep, and, um, and, uh, I'm in Merrill, and I know a lot of people in Merrill, so I'm, I'm gonna probably... I might just
- 15:55get so drunk that I pass out, and if somebody puts something in my mouth, then it's, uh, and then it's all over. Ah. Oh, boy. That's hella drunk. Yeah, it is.
- 16:06[laughs] But I, I might, I might be smothered by somebody who reads my sticker that I just put on my bike, uh, in Milwaukee. It says, "Hey, wanna make, wanna ride bikes and make out?"
- 16:19[laughs] And if she reads that, then she's gonna go- I know who left you that... "I'm gonna sit on, I'm gonna sit on his face later." Oh. Oh, boy. Hey- I might, I might not come back from that...
- 16:28it's a children, children's show here. Come on, now. [laughs] That's true. Anytime Big Sexy's in the picture- I mean sit on my face in a playful way. Right on, right on
- 16:38So, well, so I, I'll, like I told you last week, I'm, I'm, I'm gonna go to Minneapolis. I'm gonna, I'm gonna bike around Minneapolis and see a bunch of people, but then, um, after Minneapolis I'm heading south.
- 16:51I'm going, I'm gonna do Lincoln, Nebraska; Topeka, Kansas; I'm gonna have to get drunk with my uncle in Kansas City; and then I got friends in Northwest Arkansas; and I'm going to Oklahoma City; Austin;
- 17:06San Antonio; and then I'm gonna go up the Texas Gulf Coast; and then hopefully get a job in New Orleans until Easter, and, and keep on going from there. But you know what? The one thing I will do,
- 17:22I will keep in contact with y'all, 'cause y'all, y'all treated me really good there. I, I, I can't thank you enough. All right, brother. Man- Well, it was good to have you... yeah, absolutely.
- 17:33Uh, we've got a, we've got another guest we're gonna get to, Big Sexy, so, uh, thanks for the update. Happy birthday. Happy birthday to you. All right. Well, thank- This is your- Thank you...
- 17:41birthday song, and it's not very long. Happy birthday. [laughs] All right, we'll talk to you soon. So, well, well, tha- thank you guys so much, and I, I'll, I'll, I'll be in contact.
- 17:53If not next week, uh, in, in a couple weeks I'll, I'll, I'll let y'all know where I'm at. Right on. Right on. Thank you, sir. Have a good one. Bye. I love you guys. I love you guys so much. Thank you.
- 18:05Big Sexy ladies and gentlemen. Big love- Big Sexy... from Big Sexy. Hey, welcome to the radio program. Caller, who do we have on the line? Well, it's Sealy Dave. Sealy Dave. Sealy Dave.
- 18:19Hey, it's been a while since we heard from you. It has. It has. I, uh, I've actually been on the road recently, not like Big Sexy.
- 18:29Um, I've been driving back and forth between Green Bay and La Crosse for like the last like four days, uh, for the Ride Across Wisconsin.
- 18:38I was, uh, helping out taking photos and doing, uh, some ride support, you know, six and flats and stuff like that for the, for RAW, which was a ride I started. And, um, it looks like,
- 18:54uh, the Chris Cagle Foundation is kinda gonna take over that of running that event- That's cool... um, which is the Wheel and Sprocket crew. And- Right. You mean taking it away from Bike Fed?
- 19:06Well, you know, I was kinda like the big event guy at Bike Fed when I was there.
- 19:13And although there's others like, you know, Chris and Jake and stuff like that, that are like super dialed for like those urban rides and things like that, like, you know, Rampage or whatever else.
- 19:24But, um, there really isn't anybody else on staff that had sort of that DNA. So I think what's gonna happen is the Chris Cagle Foundation's gonna take over the event.
- 19:38I think that Bike Fed's probably gonna still be a beneficiary and still help out. But, um, but I tell you, dude, I worked... Or guys, um, sorry, I- Dude... I know there's more than you guys- Dude. Dude. Dude. Dude.
- 19:50Who, who else is in the room? I... Whoa. Who else is in the room, I can't We got, we got JK and Tony, the, the typical, the, the fearsome- Okay. All right... the fearsome trio. Hey, guys. Whoa. Hey. Yeah, hey, guys.
- 19:59[laughs] Um, but I tell you what, I worked four 18-hour days in a row driving back and forth between like, um, La Crosse and Green Bay every day- Damn, man...
- 20:11you know, chasing riders and supporting riders and taking photos. And boy, that entire Wheel and Sprocket crew was, they were just freaking rock stars.
- 20:21They all worked harder than I did, longer hours than I did, and always with a smile. So I couldn't be happier to have, if that's who's taking over that event that I started, I, I couldn't be happier. Yeah, sounds good.
- 20:37Yeah. Did you see, did you see Berta and Mike- Kinda like a-... out there on, on their single speeds? I did. I, I saw them. I saw them and, uh, a couple of the other crew.
- 20:46Liz's, uh, sister was riding with them too, uh, Amelia. Um, and, uh, um, I saw them. But yeah, it, it was a fun event. It, it worked out pretty well, and, uh, it's a nice route.
- 21:01Here's something though, uh, nobody else knows yet, so it'll be, uh, your, your show will be the first to break the potential news. Um- A scoop here on Full Spectrum Cycling. [singing] Full Spectrum Cycling scoop, folks.
- 21:13That's why I... Full Spectrum. People need to listen to this show. It's, um, it, it- Font of info... if you don't listen to Full Spectrum- Need... you're out of the loop, let's- Need... let's face it. Like it.
- 21:23Uh, so the ride might go from La Crosse to Milwaukee next year. Ooh. Ooh. That sounds good. Oh. On the new U.S. Bike Route 30 route. Okay. Following that route, that, um...
- 21:38And, uh, and the, the connection, the, the thing that makes it like just more tempting than ever is, um, Julian Cagle, you know, he runs Cagle's Inn now.
- 21:50He left the bike side of their family business, and he runs the restaurant side of their family businesses at Cagle's Inn. He also runs that beer garden down by the art museum. Yep.
- 22:02So this ride is supposed to go from, you know, the Mississippi to Lake Michigan. And so it, we mi- we're talking about trying to figure out a way to do the ride along U.S.
- 22:14Bike Route 30 and end in Milwaukee at the beer garden by the art museum. Nice. That sounds sweet. But you left out one thing there. He also- What's that?... ran the Riverwest Arby's during the Riverwest 24. [laughs] Ah.
- 22:31All right. [laughs] Well, that was Noel. That was Noel. Exactly. Well, Noel helped, but yeah. Well- His brother brought all the goods. I gotcha, yeah, yeah. That's cool. That family- Nice to know...
- 22:41they're, they're freaking rock stars. And, uh- Ah... and you know, they bring a work culture of work hard, smile, and help everybody enjoy their ride, and, and that really is infectious.
- 22:54And I think you don't last long at Wheel and Sprocket unless you've got that same, you know, um, you're cut from that same bolt of cloth.
- 23:03So, um, so I, it was really fun to work with those guys, really fun to work with the Bike Fed people again, and, uh, sort of be back in the saddle working a big event. Yeah, that sounds good.
- 23:13I me- I know you're good at it and it, it's something that I think, uh, the whole biking community as a whole would benefit from if you did more of that type of stuff. So I am working up here, um, with...
- 23:26You know, I worked, I helped out, just volunteered with the Bora Epic, and did a lot of their GPS stuff and their mapping and, and day of event things.
- 23:35I'm helping with, uh, Shawano Mountain Bike Festival, the Fat Tire 40 to many people, and, um, I'm helping with that. But I have a couple of ideas for some new sorta like...
- 23:48Oh, I also helped with, uh, Tim Kruger's, uh, you know, Terrene Tires, Esker Cycles guy, um, his Hungry Bear and, uh, Shawano again 100.
- 23:59And I'm thinking about starting a couple of new events up here that I think Full Spectrum might, uh, be, have a good place in. Um, and that they're kinda DIY, you know, low-key sort of events/races.
- 24:17Um, and the two events are- And Greg, you, you know about the one, the Valhalla Beach Party- Yep...
- 24:23that would be a warm weather, a warm weather fat bike race on those, those, you know, sandy fire roads and ATV trails that we rode up in the Bayfield Peninsula. That'd be very cool. That's one.
- 24:35The other one is, I'm thinking about doing is, uh, a messenger style race in the North Woods where, where you sign up for the race and you get a manifest of points.
- 24:48Um, you get a GPS file with, with points where you gotta... And I can do a paper map as well, where you gotta go hit each one of these points, but there's no route assigned. So that would be called- Yeah. Okay...
- 25:03I think I'm gonna call that the Seely Search and Rescue Party. Sounds good. Um- That sounds fun... and start at like the Sano Saloon.
- 25:11Start at the Sano Saloon, everybody gets their manifest, and then you figure out your own route to hit all these different points. Sounds like a good plan. I like it. I think it'd be really fun.
- 25:23I'm, I'm not aware of either of these style events happening anywhere, either a warm weather fat bike race where fat bikes have a genuine real advantage over regular amount bikes, um, or,
- 25:38uh, you know, a backwoods, uh, courier style race where you get a manifest and you have to hit points. Now, I've, I've Googled them and, and I haven't come up with anything. If anybody can,
- 25:51because I always prefer to copy somebody else's good idea and just make it my own- Absolutely...
- 25:57but if anybody else, if any of the listeners wanna email seelydave@gmail.com, if they know of somebody else that's doing one of these races, I'd, I'd love to see, uh, how other people are doing like a warm weather fat bike race in the desert southwest or something on sandy roads or, uh, or a messenger style
- 26:19race in the woods where, where you get the, a manifest of points and you just gotta hit all these points on your own, make up your own route. That sounds, yeah, it sounds like a good plan.
- 26:29I, I, I'm not aware of any either. You know, we got a lot of stuff submitted to fatbike.com in the old days and never...
- 26:36You know, I mean, besides there's a beach race in North Carolina on the, on the shore of, uh, of the At- uh, Atlantic Ocean in Wilmot that happens, like, in, in ear- late spring, but I'm not aware of something that's like summer- Oh, okay...
- 26:50and that actually has, you know, again, where a fat bike has a distinct advantage versus, you know- Right... people just rolling on their, on their 29 pluses or something.
- 26:59But, but that's a beach ride too, and- That is, it is a beach ride, for sure... you, you guys... Right, and you guys and I know that
- 27:07you can ride closer to the water and hit firmer sand on a beach ride, but if it's, if it's dry weather on the Bayfield Peninsula, you're in soft sand. There's, there is no hard sand to find, you know? Right. Yeah.
- 27:22There's no compacted sand. Yeah.
- 27:23That event in, uh, Wilmot too is, it's, like, on the island, so it's basically like, I don't know if the lap is a mile and a half or two mi- It's not very long, so it's like a circuit race- Oh, okay.
- 27:32Uh, on the sh- on the shore of an island. Yeah. So it's just that it happens not in the winter is kind of was sort of like it's not- Right...
- 27:39exactly the same thing, but it's, you know, it's a, it's a, it, it's at least semi-warm weather. But yeah, totally different- Right... uh, terrain. So when... So Greg, you came up and visited.
- 27:48You know, we went to that, uh, the, uh, the bar in Eau Claire, the Plywood Palace or whatever. [laughs] Smoke Club Bar, whatever you wanna call it. Um- [laughs]...
- 27:58and we were talking about this, and I was originally thinking, like, a really long epic race
- 28:05with even, like, 100-mile route, and I've got a route like that mapped from, you know, roads that I've, those, uh, sandy fire roads that I've ridden up there.
- 28:15But I'm starting to think, like, just keep it a little bit shorter, like even a 40-mile race with a big... I think the emphasis should be on the party, not on the race. You know what I mean? Always. Yeah.
- 28:29Like, I don't wanna- Always... a 40-mile race where you've got 30% or 20% of that in deep sand, I mean, that's already a pretty hard race. So let's just stick with that and have a fun party at the end. Yeah.
- 28:45That sounds good. Maybe we can get Daikaiju- Dikaiju... up there. [laughs] Dikaiju. He can- Dikaiju. Hey, that's, uh, yeah, that sounds fun.
- 28:54I was, I was thinking earlier when you were talking about, uh, the Kegel Foundation maybe taking over the, the Ride Across Wisconsin, that there's kind of a lot of, uh, stuff moving around.
- 29:05I just got a, I, I don't know if you've seen it today, that Life Time is taking over the Sea Otter Classic now, and, uh- I saw that. Well, I, I didn't see it today.
- 29:14I work with Peter Spencer who runs the Chequamegon Mountain Bike Festival up here, which is another Life Time event. And so Peter told me that, uh, a while ago that Life Time was taking over.
- 29:25Um- Yeah, I just, I, I was just kinda curious how th- because they're getting ahold of a lot.
- 29:29They've got hold of the Dirty Kanza and a bunch of other, you know, kind of grassroots, epic, great races that have been going on forever, including the Chequamegon, um, Fat Tire Festival, and just what's, what's your feeling for what h- Are they, are they adding value, or is it just, like, a, a money grab for stuff that's already doing well?
- 29:48You know, it's completely not a money grab.
- 29:51So you can say what you want, and different people will have different feelings about, you know, a big company like Life Time taking over the, some of these events like the Chequamegon 40 or, or, you know, what's, what's Kanza called now?
- 30:04Uh, the- Yeah. It has a new name- Um-... 'cause that was apparently offensive. I don't know exactly what that was all about. Right. Yeah. And I get that, and I think that's a good idea that they changed it.
- 30:13But, but my point is about, about Life Time is that you can say what you want about, like, ah, corporatizing, you know, things and... But Life Time, I know from working very closely with them, um, on these events that-
- 30:29That the owner of Life Time only has this event side because he personally loves events. I mean, Life Time,
- 30:40if, if you've ever driven by their building out in Brookfield, it, I'm, I'm talking to your listeners in the Milwaukee area, um,
- 30:49I mean, they make all their money off of very fancy, you know, workout facilities in really nice places. They spend a gazillion dollars on all of that stuff. The, the event side of Life Time is, like, not a money maker.
- 31:06I, it, it's, it's just a, a, a value added that, um, sort of like, it, it, it's- A tax write-off [laughs]...
- 31:15it's part of their palmares, you know, for, like, if you're a, if you're an athlete and you wanna work out at Life Time, you know that Life Time cares about these events and stuff like that.
- 31:25So I think it's just a b- a- an added value branding sort of thing to help.
- 31:31And, and like I said, from what I've been told from Peter Spencer, who is a really great guy, who runs the, the Shawangunk 40, he also runs Lutsen and some event down in Austin, and I work with him really closely all the time.
- 31:50He's like, "You know, it, it just adds value to the brand. It's not a money maker." So it, so whether you...
- 31:58And we would all have loved for Gary Crandall to stay the owner of, and his partners, to stay the o- and Peewee, um, to stay the owners of, you know, the Shawangunk 40, but after a while, people age out, and then it's gotta go somewhere, and where, where should it go, you know?
- 32:17Yeah. And that's always a question. Well, yeah, and, and I was wondering where the heck you were this weekend, and I forgot that RAW was happening [laughs] I'm like- I was working RAW, yeah. Did you go to that?
- 32:26I was like, we saw those guys, and where was Dave? Yeah, so you were working RAW. Yeah, so- I'm like, "Well, that, that makes sense now."
- 32:32[laughs] Yeah, Peewee, I talked to Peewee and, and, you know, his partner, um, a, a coup- a bunch of times before the event, and I felt bad that I couldn't be there.
- 32:44Um, but, uh, uh, I'm glad you guys were there, and I saw Jason was there, and sounds like Gary Crandall gave a really nice talk. Yep, he did, for sure. So anyway, I guess folks should stay tuned.
- 33:00Uh, and I don't know if I'll be able to launch both of these events next year. Um, I'm not sure which one I might do first. I'm leaning towards the Sealy Search and Rescue Party first.
- 33:13And like I said, I think that would be like anybody that's done a, a, an Alley Cat or a Messenger style r- race where, like, you know, like, you get a manifest- Like the River West 24...
- 33:24and you normally get the manifest the day of. Right, yeah. You mean like the River West 24? The party the night before. Yeah, sort of a 20, River West 24 style thing.
- 33:32Yeah, or like the, or like the Milwaukee Messenger Invitational. Um- Right. Where- Remember...
- 33:37you know, there's parties the night before with bands and stuff like that, and then the next morning you get a, a, a manifest with, with locations that you have to hit, and then you have to figure out your own route.
- 33:50Because this is, like, gonna be obviously a longer ride in the middle of the woods where, like, it's harder to figure out the routes, I'm thinking I might, as soon as you register, you'll get the manifest.
- 34:03You'll get these points. So you can start working on your route immediately, um, whenever you register. And then we'll still have the Friday night party the night before, and then the Saturday ride, and a party after.
- 34:18And that's, and hopefully Daikaiju will be blowing 20. Seems like a- [laughs] Seems like a good party-to-ride balance. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. Part, part, two parties to one ride. I like that ratio. Yeah, I like that a lot.
- 34:28Good ratio. Especially if Daikaiju's involved. Right, two parties to one ride. Yep. Well, we all got tickets to Daikaiju. Yeah. But it sounds like you guys might are trying to get Daikaiju, right?
- 34:37Well, we're gonna, we're gonna go to the show on the 18th, so we'll, we'll see what we can find out about their future plans.
- 34:42I know that, you know, when they come to an area, a lot of times it's 'cause somebody asked them to be there and they're paying them, and then they'll do, they'll, they'll book a bunch of shows in that area kind of within a couple weeks of- Right...
- 34:54of when they're showing up. It's like sort of a, a, a, a, uh, a spur of the moment kind of a situation where- Self-generating- Yeah... tour machine, it is. Right, yeah. So, um- Yeah, right. See ya...
- 35:03if they, either they happen to be here already or-
- 35:07Well, we, we, yeah, we could maybe work on the same sort of a deal for next year with the Sealy Search and Rescue Party, and, uh, and maybe get them doing something with you guys in Milwaukee, then they come up here for that, and then they go over to the Twin Cities for something else, and then they go back to...
- 35:25Are, they're from Indiana or Iowa? No, they're from Arkansas. R- Oh, and, and the East Coast. Yeah.
- 35:32Well, the, I- They, they- So the, you know, the band has morphed over the years, and, uh, th- but the original band- But they are number one... came out of- Action... rock. Action Heroes. Heroes. Action Hero Rock. Go.
- 35:43Engage. Go. [laughs] Yeah, for sure.
- 35:47Um, well, Dave, w- we got a lot of other stuff to talk about, so I guess we're gonna have to talk to you, uh, another time in the not too distant future, 'cause we haven't even touched on Life Above 8 yet, and a couple other things that you got going up there, so.
- 35:59Oh, yeah.
- 35:59Um, I know that, uh, we'll have the, uh, we'll have the link to the website, but we could probably do a whole show about what you're doing with that, with, with podcasts coming up maybe, and vidcasts or, you know, whatever you call...
- 36:09What do you, what do you call the video thing? Yeah, you know, it's like, yeah, you and I gotta talk about that. I'd love to... So there's like-minded, I, I guess great minds think alike, right?
- 36:19There's another website out there called Life Above 8 with... Mine is Life Above 8 spelled out, and there's another website that preceded mine, Life Above 8 with a numeral 8....com.
- 36:33And those guys are, like, more hunters and trappers and stuff like that. But what's wacky is they, their cabins and stuff are over by Butternut, which is where I deer hunt and where...
- 36:48My mom's from Park Falls, and so, so I'm gonna reach out to those guys, and they've got a podcast, but it's all about hunting and trapping and stuff like that. Well, that's very cool.
- 36:59But I, I do hun- I do do that sort of stuff, too. I, I... Biking and stuff is more the forefront for me, but I also hunt and fish and all that sort of stuff, so.
- 37:09I don't trap, but, um, but so I'm gonna try to work with those guys and say, "Hey, why don't we just, like, blend our shit because Life Above 8 is about both these sort of things, and you guys are better at that and I'm better at this.
- 37:25And I'm honestly better at the website stuff and things like that, so." But they have a podcast, Greg, um, Life Above 8. Let's, let's check it out. Pod- Um, but it's all about hunting and trapping and stuff like that.
- 37:39But it's very similar style to this, it's just a bunch of guys sitting around talking about whatever venison or whatever- Mm... porcupines or whatever they're cooking. [laughs] Porcupine quills. You know? Um. Venison.
- 37:53Right. So- Yeah, their web- their website's pretty slow. Oh, there it comes. Oh, okay. Here we go. All right. Someone's home. Yeah, we're gonna check it out. Right.
- 38:01Yeah, so but let's, you and I, Greg, uh, put our heads together a little bit more about this Life Above 8- Oh... podcasting for the cycling world, and let's see if we can figure something out. Okay? Sounds good.
- 38:16Yeah, they've got, uh... Oh, they got a few podcasts. All right, guys. I'm gonna listen to their show.
- 38:19Uh, all right, Dave, um, again, you know, we should catch up even in a couple weeks because th- there's just, there's a lot of, a lot of things going on, and I think what you're doing, you know, to keep cycling moving forward in Wisconsin is great.
- 38:32You know, we had that, we had the Pee Wee thing last weekend celebrating a guy that's been doing that- Right... for 50 years already and, or more. Right. And it's just like, you know, the, the right people- Right...
- 38:42doing the right things are gonna make cycling, you know, just move forward in Wisconsin. I agree. I agree. We're all on the same page. [laughs] All right, man.
- 38:50Very good to hear from you, and, uh, we'll catch up with you next time. Seely Dave- All right... ladies and gentlemen. See you. Adios. Seely Dave. Later. LifeAbove8-E-I-G-H-T.com. [laughs] Exactly. All right. All right.
- 39:04Bye. All right. Hey, Seely Dave there. He's got... I tell you, he's got a lot of stuff going on. Yeah. Uh, I, oh, I for- Not that crazy... I, I even forgot to mention something to him that I wanted to kinda check up on.
- 39:15Um, he mentioned that US Bike Route 30. Yeah. When we were over in, uh, Michigan, that's the, that's the bike route we were on from Muskegon to Grand Haven, and it is so well...
- 39:27The si- there's signs everywhere, so you can... You, if, if you get lost on that route, you're really trying hard- You're blind... to get lost. [laughs] Yes.
- 39:34And I will say, though, that the US Bike Route 30 between Grand Haven and Muskegon is on some really nice less traveled roads, but there's also no real ser- there's no bars, there's no gas stations. Mm.
- 39:49There's no, you know- So you're saying-... convenience stores. There's- What you're saying is ride a touring bike with beer on board. Yes, because it's only in t- it's only 20 miles. Oh, well, that's a piece of cake.
- 39:58Um, but you know, if you- But 20 miles without a bar? Damn, dude. But you got- Come on. But, but, man, how would- But you got beer on your bike. You got beer on your bike.
- 40:04Well, if I didn't have beer on my bike, I would have anxiety. Well, you, you can, you could take a right at any, any point. Theoret- My, my theoretical riding of this is already giving me anxiety right now.
- 40:14[laughs] You can go just a couple miles- I'm actually quite excited about riding this... to the east of the route, though, and find a more, you know, a busier road. I get it. Yeah. Well, yeah, I...
- 40:21Yeah, take a left turn for two blocks, there's a bar probably. Well. It sounds pretty fun. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. Life, you know- All right, everybody... finds a way.
- 40:30Oh, yeah, next, um, next Friday, I believe, if I'm not mistaken- A week from today? Uh. Oh, that's Monday. Exactly. Friday. A week from Friday. Today.
- 40:40I speak of today in the, the future, in the past, and myself in the first pers- third person. Michael is saying, uh, the underwear ride is- Underwear ride- Oh, it's coming back... has returned to Milwaukee. And- Okay.
- 40:54Okay. And then I was looking, I didn't quite see a launch point, but I'm very sure it's probably- They, they usually announce it the day, couple of days prior... probably Reservoir Park. It's fun. That's cool.
- 41:04Reservoir P- Reservoir. That's a fun ride. We've done it. Well, and that's an easy place to- This past spring... start a corral of a humongous- Greg, the last time-... amount of people...
- 41:11wait, the last time we did the underwear ride, where did we finish? Oh, I'm just wondering if there's a pattern. Uh, X-Ray Speck Lounge. And what did we see? Daikaiju. We saw Daikaiju. Exactly. And, and, and, and Mr.
- 41:21Berger had a very interesting ride home. I- To be fair... uh, to be fair, and it was my birthday. Yes, this is why the ride was somewhat interesting, I would imagine. [laughs] Yes, yes.
- 41:31Yeah, it's one of those rides that kind of, um, starts at one point and dumps you off at the end, and then you find your way home. Mm-hmm. Oh, yes. Yeah. That's not a bad thing. In your underwear.
- 41:40[laughs] It is just good- In your underwear... it's just good to know that ahead of time so that you don't- Right...
- 41:44think you're looping back in, in, in your drunken stupor are gonna end up where you started, because- A lot of people don't really turn a blind eye when they see 150 people in their underwear, but when there's two-
- 41:56Yeah... they tend to wonder what's going on and what you're doing on your ride. I think something about the actual naked bike ride happening in Milwaukee.
- 42:01And that's, um, September 11th is, you know, until- In Milwaukee naked people. In, in Milwaukee naked people. I mean, it's always been underwear people to this point. I, I... Underwear's legal.
- 42:09And a little more comfortable. And not underwear isn't. You know? Yeah, exactly. I don't know if I want my, you know- My boys touching that. I agree. Well, I mean, I just... That doesn't sound like a terribly- Nope...
- 42:19comfortable endeavor there. I think, I think greasy booty on the seat- I'm just-... would not be a good thing. No. I, that's, I'm just practically thinking this out loud. It makes no sense, but whatever.
- 42:30Well, it makes sense. I mean, if you wanna be, feel free and- If you wanna be as free, free, free, free, free.
- 42:34I get it, ladies- And this is probably the only time I'll allow you to run- There'll be Lady and Lord Godivas all on their trusty steeds. Yes. Da-da, da-da, prancing through the village. Right on.
- 42:43[laughs] Prancing through the village. So there... [laughs] All right then. There's, there's my recap of the naked ride already. [laughs] I guess so. Thank you very much. I, I just came back from the future, by the way.
- 42:52Yeah, thanks. Nice, nice. I don't think we missed anything this week. Uh-uh. But if we did, we'll, we'll catch up with it next week. Yeah. So, uh- Beg for forgiveness then... yeah, thank, thank, thank everybody.
- 43:01Thank, thank, thanks everybody for- Thank you... for checking out our show. Um- We're sorry. And yeah. [laughs] I'm sorry. We're so- Thanks... we're really, really sorry. [laughs] I'm not sorry. We're not sorry. Mr.
- 43:13Hamburger.
- 43:16[upbeat music]
