- 0:06This is your daily message from Chad.
- 0:07We're 1154 to upgrade your mental game today by telling

- 0:16This message is dedicated to Chris Lesnar.

- 0:30Here's the upgrade. You may only see gaps, but
- 0:33upgraded thinking trust the hole to close them.
- 0:36Here's the story. A master boat builder was
- 0:39finishing a wooden hole in his shop.
- 0:42His young helper kept crouching down at the seams, running
- 0:45fingers along the planks, and he didn't like what he felt.
- 0:49There are gaps, the helper said. Daylight's coming through.
- 0:52Look here and here and here. This boat's going to sink.
- 0:56The old man kept working. He didn't worry.
- 0:59He stepped back. Come here, he said.
- 1:02Stop looking at the holes and look at the hole.
- 1:06The helper stood up, and from a few feet back he saw it.
- 1:09The long clean lines, the strong ribs, the curve of a hole built
- 1:13to carry weight across deep water.
- 1:15But the seams, all these gaps the helpers had, The wood is
- 1:19dry, the builder said. Right now it's thirsty.
- 1:22When we put her in the water, the planks drink and they swell.
- 1:25They press against each other until there isn't a gap left to
- 1:28find. She'll leak for a day or so, but
- 1:31then she'll be tight as a drum. That's not a trick.
- 1:34That's how wooden boats have been built for centuries.
- 1:37The builder fits the planks, knowing the water will finish
- 1:40the work. The gap you're panicking over in
- 1:43the dry shop is going to close. So the old man didn't caulk
- 1:47every fear. The helper pointed out he
- 1:50trusted the material. He trusted the design.
- 1:53He launched the boat and by the next morning, every gap and hole
- 1:56the helper was worried about was gone.
- 1:59I was listening to Chris Lesnar's Servant Leader podcast
- 2:02yesterday. He interviewed his dad, Bill for
- 2:05his 100th episode. A lesson Chris said he learned
- 2:08from his dad was looking at the hole and not the holes.
- 2:12Instead of fixating on deficiencies and problems,
- 2:16stepping back and putting things in context and perspective, it's
- 2:21easy to do what the Craftsman assistant did, see the gaps and
- 2:24holes and all the potential problems.
- 2:27You run your finger along everything that isn't done yet,
- 2:29everything that's still open, and from close up it's easy to
- 2:33see what could sync. You step back, look at the hole.
- 2:38The structure is standing, the lines are true, the work you've
- 2:42already done is holding more than you give it credit for, and
- 2:46a lot of the gaps you're staring at, life is going to swell them
- 2:49shut on its own if you'll just get the boat in the water.
- 2:53This isn't pretending the holes aren't there, it's refusing to
- 2:57let them be. The whole story.
- 2:59WHOLE story. When you see the hole clearly,
- 3:04the few gaps that really need filling become obvious and
- 3:07small. Redirect your view.
- 3:10Go a few clicks out. The better story to tell
- 3:12yourself is focus on the hole, not the holes.
- 3:16Tell me a story of seeing the whole picture from
- 3:19chadsmith@gmail.com. Send someone a text and tell
- 3:22them you're stronger than the gaps you're staring at.
