- 0:00Speaker 1: John Robinson wrote this November 3rd, 1953 NBC broadcast of Dragnet,
- 0:06Speaker 1: episode 220. In Big Rain, Detective Sergeant Joe Friday and
- 0:12Speaker 1: his partner Frank Smith are assigned to a homicide detail
- 0:16Speaker 1: investigation after a woman is found badly beaten near a
- 0:20Speaker 1: gutter on a rainy Los Angeles night. The evidence points
- 0:24Speaker 1: first toward Cecil Johnson, while reports that the woman's husband
- 0:29Speaker 1: had threatened her life add another lead for Friday and
- 0:32Speaker 1: Smith to pursue. Jack Webb stars as Friday, with Ben
- 0:37Speaker 1: Alexander as Smith. Vivi Janis and Harry Bartell are also
- 0:41Speaker 1: heard in the cast. Ladies and gentlemen, the curtain rises now.
- 0:47Speaker 1: Here is the original broadcast.
- 0:50Speaker 2: ¶ ¶ Ladies and gentlemen, the story you are about
- 0:59Speaker 2: to hear is true. The names have been changed to
- 1:02Speaker 2: protect the innocent.
- 1:03Speaker 3: Dragnet is brought to you by Chesterfield, made by Liggett
- 1:07Speaker 3: & Myers, first major tobacco company to give you a
- 1:10Speaker 3: complete line of quality cigarettes.
- 1:22Speaker 2: You're a detective sergeant. You're assigned to homicide detail. You
- 1:26Speaker 2: get a call that a woman has been badly beaten.
- 1:28Speaker 2: The circumstances indicate foul play.
- 1:31Speaker 4: Your job? Check it out.
- 1:37Speaker 2: The nation's top golfers and sports writers have named Ben
- 1:40Speaker 2: Hogan Professional Golfer of the Year.
- 1:43Speaker 4: Ben, of course, smokes Chesterfield. But let's hear what he
- 1:47Speaker 4: has to say about them himself.
- 1:48Speaker 5: I'm a Chesterfield smoker and have been for seven years.
- 1:52Speaker 4: The reason's simple.
- 1:53Speaker 6: Chesterfield is the best for me.
- 1:56Speaker 4: They're milder and they taste great. Try them yourself.
- 2:00Speaker 2: Take that suggestion from Ben Hogan today. Try Chesterfield, regular
- 2:05Speaker 2: or king size. They're low in nicotine, highest in quality.
- 2:10Speaker 4: Really mild. Really satisfying.
- 2:14Speaker 6: Chesterfield.
- 2:15Speaker 4: Best for you.
- 2:23Speaker 3: Dragnet, the documented drama of an actual crime. For the
- 2:27Speaker 3: next 30 minutes, in cooperation with the Los Angeles Police Department,
- 2:31Speaker 3: you will travel step by step on the side of
- 2:33Speaker 3: the law through an actual case transcribed from official police files.
- 2:37Speaker 3: From beginning to end, from crime to punishment, Dragnet is
- 2:41Speaker 3: the story of your police force in action.
- 2:50Speaker 7: It was Tuesday, November 17th. It was raining in Los Angeles.
- 2:53Speaker 7: We were working the night watch on a homicide detail.
- 2:55Speaker 7: My partner's Frank Smith. The boss is Captain Lorman.
- 2:57Speaker 6: My name's Friday. We were on our way back from
- 2:59Speaker 6: the main jail, and it was 11.27 p.m. when we
- 3:00Speaker 6: got to room 42.
- 3:01Speaker 2: Homicide.
- 3:05Speaker 8: We've got to get that car radio fixed, Joe.
- 3:07Speaker 4: It's getting worse all the time.
- 3:08Speaker 6: Yeah, well, we can take it over in the morning.
- 3:10Speaker 9: Thing almost knocked me right out of the seat when
- 3:12Speaker 9: I called in tonight.
- 3:12Speaker 6: As soon as you press the button.
- 3:14Speaker 4: Bang, you get a shot.
- 3:15Speaker 6: Yeah, well, I was out with Lopey yesterday. He picked
- 3:16Speaker 6: up the mic. I thought he was going to climb
- 3:17Speaker 6: right out of the window. Yeah, well, that's pretty funny
- 3:19Speaker 6: as long as you don't have to use the thing. Well,
- 3:21Speaker 6: it must be a short someplace, huh? Got to get
- 3:23Speaker 6: it fixed.
- 3:24Speaker 9: You know, I must have used a dollar's worth of
- 3:25Speaker 9: dimes calling in today. If this keeps up, I'm going
- 3:28Speaker 9: to have to give up lunches.
- 3:29Speaker 6: Well, that wouldn't hurt you either.
- 3:31Speaker 4: That's not kind, Joe.
- 3:32Speaker 6: I've lost seven pounds in the last two weeks.
- 3:35Speaker 8: Where?
- 3:37Speaker 4: I'm going to see about a transfer.
- 3:38Speaker 6: Well, let's finish up these reports before you get out
- 3:39Speaker 6: of here.
- 3:40Speaker 1: What do you say?
- 3:40Speaker 4: Okay, I'm with you.
- 3:42Speaker 2: Hot shot. I get it.
- 3:48Speaker 6: There's a robbery call. A bar out in the Olympic.
- 3:51Speaker 2: Oh.
- 3:51Speaker 9: Thought for a minute we were going to have to
- 3:52Speaker 9: go out. All I want to do is get home
- 3:54Speaker 9: and get some dry socks on. My feet are killing me.
- 3:57Speaker 6: Yeah. Well, I got an idea. If you'll stop talking
- 3:59Speaker 6: and pick up a pencil, we can quit on time
- 4:00Speaker 6: for a change. Another hot shot.
- 4:03Speaker 4: I'll get it.
- 4:12Speaker 8: Get your hat.
- 4:13Speaker 4: Beating out in Hollywood.
- 4:14Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 4:14Speaker 4: Woman found her laying in the gutter.
- 4:15Speaker 6: She still alive?
- 4:16Speaker 4: Was when they got the call. We better step on it, though.
- 4:18Speaker 4: They don't know how long she's gonna last.
- 4:28Speaker 7: When we got to the address we'd been given by
- 4:29Speaker 7: the complaint board, two radio cars from Hollywood Division were
- 4:32Speaker 7: already there. An ambulance had arrived, and the crew was
- 4:34Speaker 7: doing what they could for the victim. She was still alive,
- 4:37Speaker 7: but the attendant said that she appeared to have a
- 4:39Speaker 7: skull fracture.
- 4:39Speaker 6: In addition to possible internal injuries.
- 4:42Speaker 7: From one of the officers who answered the call, we
- 4:43Speaker 7: found that the victim had been sprawled across the sidewalk,
- 4:46Speaker 7: her head in the gutter. Due to the heavy rain,
- 4:48Speaker 7: a stream of water was running down and into a
- 4:50Speaker 7: storm drain. The fact that the drain was above the
- 4:53Speaker 7: victim's head appeared to be the only thing that saved.
- 4:54Speaker 6: Her from drowning.
- 4:56Speaker 7: The crime lab had been called and the men from
- 4:58Speaker 7: Hollywood Division were doing what they could to keep the
- 4:59Speaker 7: crowd back in order to preserve any physical evidence that
- 5:01Speaker 7: might have been left. The victim appeared to be a
- 5:04Speaker 7: woman in her early 40s. The clothes she wore looked expensive,
- 5:07Speaker 7: but they were badly torn. Her face was cut and
- 5:10Speaker 7: the men in the ambulance crew removed her immediately to
- 5:12Speaker 7: Hollywood Emergency Hospital for treatment. An officer was assigned to
- 5:15Speaker 7: her in the event she regained consciousness. When she was found,
- 5:19Speaker 7: her left shoe was missing and there was no sign
- 5:21Speaker 7: of any purse or wallet. None of the people who'd
- 5:23Speaker 7: gathered in the crowd could give us an identification of her.
- 5:26Speaker 7: The homes in the vicinity were large, and the area
- 5:28Speaker 7: was sparsely populated. The nearest house to the place where
- 5:31Speaker 7: the victim was found was at least 300 feet down
- 5:33Speaker 7: the street. We talked to the people in the crowd
- 5:35Speaker 7: and found that the man who'd made the original call
- 5:37Speaker 7: was still supposed to be there. We checked with the
- 5:39Speaker 7: officers in the radio unit, but they said they hadn't
- 5:41Speaker 7: seen him. From them, however, we found that the call
- 5:44Speaker 7: had been from the home of a Mr.
- 5:45Speaker 6: And Mrs. Roger Heflin.
- 5:47Speaker 7: We contacted them, and they came back to the scene
- 5:48Speaker 7: and pointed out the man. Frank and I took him
- 5:50Speaker 7: over to our car for questioning. All right, Johnson, you
- 5:53Speaker 7: want to tell us what happened?
- 5:54Speaker 10: I don't know.
- 5:55Speaker 6: You called the police, didn't you?
- 5:56Speaker 10: Yeah, I called them.
- 5:57Speaker 6: You found her? Yes, sir.
- 5:59Speaker 10: She was lying in the street like that. I got
- 6:00Speaker 10: scared and I called the police. I thought maybe she
- 6:02Speaker 10: was dead.
- 6:02Speaker 6: What were you doing up here this time of night?
- 6:04Speaker 10: Just walking around.
- 6:05Speaker 6: You live up here, do you? No. Where do you live?
- 6:07Speaker 10: Got a room down a fountain.
- 6:09Speaker 6: Let me see your identification, will you, please?
- 6:11Speaker 10: Oh, yeah. Here's my wallet.
- 6:13Speaker 6: Any money in it?
- 6:14Speaker 8: No.
- 6:14Speaker 6: All right, let me have it.
- 6:16Speaker 11: Here you are.
- 6:16Speaker 6: Is this your true name? Cecil August Johnson?
- 6:21Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 6:21Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 6:22Speaker 6: Who's Mary Johnson?
- 6:23Speaker 10: Hmm?
- 6:24Speaker 6: I say, who's Mary Johnson?
- 6:25Speaker 8: Who's she?
- 6:26Speaker 10: My sister.
- 6:26Speaker 6: Is this her address here on the card?
- 6:28Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 6:30Speaker 10: Hey, you aren't going to call her, are you? You
- 6:31Speaker 10: aren't going to call her.
- 6:32Speaker 6: Why?
- 6:32Speaker 10: Well, she'd be pretty sure about it if you did.
- 6:34Speaker 10: She don't like it for me to get mixed up
- 6:35Speaker 10: with cops. She don't like it at all.
- 6:37Speaker 6: You ever been to an institution?
- 6:39Speaker 10: Hmm?
- 6:39Speaker 6: State institution. You ever been in one?
- 6:41Speaker 10: Yeah. I was in Camarillo once.
- 6:43Speaker 6: How long ago did you get out?
- 6:44Speaker 10: Oh, a long time ago. Three days. A long time ago.
- 6:48Speaker 10: I haven't been there for a long time.
- 6:49Speaker 4: What were you there for?
- 6:50Speaker 10: Well, lusting people.
- 6:51Speaker 8: Who?
- 6:52Speaker 10: I was in Camarillo.
- 6:53Speaker 6: Why'd they send you there, fella?
- 6:55Speaker 10: To get well.
- 6:55Speaker 6: From what?
- 6:56Speaker 10: Just well.
- 6:57Speaker 6: Yeah, we know. What'd they want you to get well from?
- 7:00Speaker 10: I was never in Camarillo.
- 7:03Speaker 6: You haven't been drinking tonight, have you?
- 7:04Speaker 9: Hmm?
- 7:05Speaker 6: I said you've been drinking.
- 7:06Speaker 10: Yeah, a little bit.
- 7:07Speaker 6: Where?
- 7:08Speaker 10: By down Highway Boulevard.
- 7:10Speaker 6: When they sent you to the hospital, what was the reason?
- 7:12Speaker 10: I've never been to the hospital.
- 7:14Speaker 6: You told us that you'd been in Camarillo.
- 7:16Speaker 10: That was to get well.
- 7:17Speaker 6: Now look, fella, we asked you before. What for?
- 7:19Speaker 10: They thought I was molesting people.
- 7:21Speaker 2: Were you?
- 7:22Speaker 10: No, I didn't hurt anybody.
- 7:23Speaker 8: Did they say you did?
- 7:24Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 7:25Speaker 8: Who?
- 7:25Speaker 10: A lady. They said I hit her.
- 7:27Speaker 6: Did you hit her?
- 7:28Speaker 10: Huh?
- 7:28Speaker 6: I said, did you hit the woman?
- 7:29Speaker 10: No, I never hurt anybody.
- 7:31Speaker 6: You know who the woman is that you found?
- 7:33Speaker 10: You're not going to call my sister, are you?
- 7:35Speaker 6: Do you know who the woman is?
- 7:36Speaker 4: What woman?
- 7:37Speaker 6: Now, look, fella, pay attention. The one you found tonight. Yeah.
- 7:41Speaker 10: I've known her for a long time.
- 7:42Speaker 6: What's her name?
- 7:43Speaker 10: Grace.
- 7:43Speaker 4: You know her last name?
- 7:45Speaker 2: Hmm?
- 7:45Speaker 6: Do you know her last name?
- 7:47Speaker 10: No. You know... I never really been in Cameroon. I
- 7:51Speaker 10: just told you that.
- 7:52Speaker 6: That's all?
- 7:52Speaker 10: Why? I don't know. Just sometimes I like to do
- 7:55Speaker 10: things like that. I don't have no reason. I just
- 7:57Speaker 10: like to do it. Like, once I told my sister
- 8:00Speaker 10: I killed a man. She almost fainted. I just like
- 8:02Speaker 10: to do that once in a while.
- 8:03Speaker 8: Things get dull.
- 8:04Speaker 10: I like to get them started.
- 8:05Speaker 6: Where'd you meet Grace?
- 8:07Speaker 10: Bar down in Hollywood. I go in there all the time.
- 8:09Speaker 10: I met her there.
- 8:10Speaker 6: Did you meet her there tonight? Yeah.
- 8:12Speaker 10: She was there. Said she had a fight with her
- 8:13Speaker 10: old man. Said they had a real beef. She told
- 8:16Speaker 10: me he hit her. Belted her right in the mouth.
- 8:18Speaker 10: What do you think of a guy do a thing
- 8:19Speaker 10: like that to a woman? Any man do a thing
- 8:21Speaker 10: like that, he's no good. No good at all. They
- 8:24Speaker 10: said I did it, too. Told my sister I hit
- 8:26Speaker 10: a woman.
- 8:27Speaker 6: Who said that?
- 8:28Speaker 10: Other cops when they arrested me.
- 8:29Speaker 4: When was this?
- 8:30Speaker 10: When I was at Camarilla to get well.
- 8:32Speaker 6: You under a doctor's care now?
- 8:33Speaker 2: No.
- 8:34Speaker 10: I got real well at Camarilla. Real well. They let
- 8:36Speaker 10: me go.
- 8:37Speaker 6: You just got through telling us that you'd never been there.
- 8:40Speaker 10: I'm a liar. You can't believe anything I say. I'm
- 8:42Speaker 10: a real liar. My sister's all the time saying that
- 8:44Speaker 10: about me. She says I'm a liar. That's one of
- 8:46Speaker 10: the reasons she used to get sore at me. I'm
- 8:47Speaker 10: such a liar. I was never there.
- 8:49Speaker 6: You know where this Grace lived?
- 8:52Speaker 2: No.
- 8:52Speaker 10: I think it was up on Ledgewood Drive. I think
- 8:54Speaker 10: that's where it was, on Ledgewood Drive.
- 8:56Speaker 6: You know where the house is?
- 8:56Speaker 8: Mm-mm.
- 8:58Speaker 10: I never saw it. I was going to go up
- 9:00Speaker 10: there one day and punch an old man in the nose.
- 9:01Speaker 10: You know, because he hit Grace. I was plenty sore
- 9:03Speaker 10: about it.
- 9:04Speaker 4: He gave her a black eye.
- 9:05Speaker 10: I was plenty sore. But I didn't. You know why?
- 9:08Speaker 6: You tell us.
- 9:09Speaker 10: Because I thought my sister would get mad at me.
- 9:12Speaker 10: She always gets mad when I get in fights. And
- 9:14Speaker 10: when I lie. She gets real sore. I've got no
- 9:16Speaker 10: sense of humor.
- 9:17Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 9:18Speaker 10: There was a guy at the hospital who had a
- 9:19Speaker 10: real sense of humor. He was funny. He had a
- 9:21Speaker 10: piece of inner tube and he wore it like a hat. Floppy,
- 9:24Speaker 10: you know? He had a real great sense of humor.
- 9:26Speaker 10: But my sister, she don't like anybody to laugh.
- 9:30Speaker 6: How many times have you been arrested, fella?
- 9:33Speaker 10: Maybe a couple.
- 9:33Speaker 6: Here in Los Angeles?
- 9:34Speaker 10: Yeah, all the time in L.A. Cops here don't like me.
- 9:37Speaker 10: I got no sense of humor. None. I never saw
- 9:39Speaker 10: such dull cops.
- 9:40Speaker 6: All right, Johnson, you wait here. We got a few
- 9:42Speaker 6: things to check out and then we want to take
- 9:43Speaker 6: you downtown.
- 9:45Speaker 10: You aren't going to arrest me, are you?
- 9:46Speaker 6: We'll see.
- 9:47Speaker 10: Well, I hope not. My sister, she'd be real sore.
- 9:49Speaker 6: Johnson?
- 9:49Speaker 4: Hmm?
- 9:50Speaker 6: Tell me something. Did you hit her? You mean, did.
- 9:54Speaker 10: I hit Grace? Is that what you mean?
- 9:56Speaker 9: That's what I mean.
- 9:58Speaker 11: No.
- 9:58Speaker 10: I met her tonight. and she asked me to take
- 10:00Speaker 10: a walk with her. To take a walk, that's all.
- 10:02Speaker 10: Then all of a sudden, she was lying on the ground.
- 10:04Speaker 10: I was pretty drunk. I didn't know what happened. Just
- 10:06Speaker 10: all of a sudden, she was there, and I got scared,
- 10:08Speaker 10: and I called the cops.
- 10:10Speaker 8: But I didn't hit her.
- 10:11Speaker 10: I wouldn't do a thing like that to Grace.
- 10:13Speaker 3: Not me.
- 10:15Speaker 8: You believe that, don't you?
- 10:18Speaker 10: Well, don't you?
- 10:22Speaker 4: You gotta buy it.
- 10:23Speaker 8: You gotta, because it's the truth.
- 10:24Speaker 6: Is that right?
- 10:26Speaker 10: Sure.
- 10:27Speaker 8: It's the truth.
- 10:28Speaker 7: Every word.
- 10:29Speaker 6: Well, you said it yourself, didn't you?
- 10:31Speaker 10: Hmm?
- 10:31Speaker 6: You're an awful liar.
- 10:32Speaker 4: 12.52 a.m.
- 10:38Speaker 7: Well, one of the officers from a radio unit stood
- 10:40Speaker 7: by with Cecil Johnson. We talked with Lieutenant Lee Jones
- 10:42Speaker 7: from the crime lab. He told us that what footprints
- 10:45Speaker 7: they'd found in the immediate vicinity of the victim had
- 10:47Speaker 7: been destroyed by the rain... He told us that his
- 10:49Speaker 7: crew was unable to find any useful physical evidence. The
- 10:52Speaker 7: area was searched, but we failed to find either the
- 10:54Speaker 7: missing left shoe or the woman's purse.
- 10:56Speaker 6: If she'd carried one. We put in a call to
- 10:58Speaker 6: the Hollywood Receiving Hospital. Dr.
- 11:00Speaker 7: Elwin Terrell told us that the victim was suffering from
- 11:02Speaker 7: a fracture of the skull and apparently several broken ribs.
- 11:05Speaker 7: He told us that the woman was in a deep
- 11:07Speaker 7: coma and she couldn't be questioned at that time. We
- 11:10Speaker 7: asked him to contact us through the business office in
- 11:11Speaker 7: the event that she regained consciousness. We questioned the people
- 11:14Speaker 7: in the neighborhood.
- 11:15Speaker 6: But they were of no aid. None of them recalled
- 11:18Speaker 6: hearing any automobiles on the streets, and none of them
- 11:19Speaker 6: could testify as to the people loitering in the area. 1.10 a.m.
- 11:24Speaker 7: We took Cecil Johnson and had him detained at the
- 11:26Speaker 7: city jail pending further investigation. A check of his record
- 11:29Speaker 7: showed that he'd been sent to Camarillo twice on charges
- 11:31Speaker 7: of molesting and violation of Section 245 PC.
- 11:34Speaker 6: He'd been released into the custody of his sister three
- 11:36Speaker 6: weeks previously.
- 11:38Speaker 7: Before he was placed in a cell, we got the
- 11:40Speaker 7: name and address of the bar where he said he'd
- 11:41Speaker 7: met the woman he called Grace.
- 11:42Speaker 10: 1.40 a.m.
- 11:45Speaker 7: Frank and I drove out to the place. It was
- 11:46Speaker 7: located on Hollywood Boulevard near Las Palmas Avenue. There was
- 11:49Speaker 7: only one other customer in the place when we went in.
- 11:51Speaker 7: The bartender was cleaning up for the night.
- 11:55Speaker 4: What'll it be?
- 11:55Speaker 6: We're looking for Emil.
- 11:57Speaker 1: I'm him.
- 11:57Speaker 4: What do you want? It's none about that lousy Jackie,
- 12:00Speaker 4: is it?
- 12:00Speaker 8: What's that?
- 12:01Speaker 4: You're cops, aren't you? Isn't this about Jackie?
- 12:04Speaker 8: We're police officers, yeah.
- 12:05Speaker 12: You gotta understand, I thought he was an actor. You know,
- 12:07Speaker 12: I thought he was just hanging around the place to
- 12:09Speaker 12: take work calls. That's what he told me. I didn't
- 12:11Speaker 12: have no way of knowing different.
- 12:13Speaker 4: Here's the truth.
- 12:13Speaker 6: We don't know anything about Jackie. We'd like to ask
- 12:15Speaker 6: you some questions about a man named Cecil Johnson.
- 12:17Speaker 12: That crackpot? You know, I thought you were after me
- 12:19Speaker 12: because of Jackie. Oh, there it goes again. Excuse me.
- 12:23Speaker 8: Yeah. Hello? Here it is.
- 12:28Speaker 4: No, he ain't here anymore.
- 12:31Speaker 6: What?
- 12:31Speaker 8: I don't care how the horse did.
- 12:33Speaker 12: Jackie ain't here. Now, don't call me no more. You see,
- 12:37Speaker 12: this guy Jackie's a book. All the time he's using
- 12:39Speaker 12: my phone and I don't know it. Yesterday, a couple
- 12:41Speaker 12: of cops come in and put the arm on him.
- 12:42Speaker 4: All day, the phone's been ringing.
- 12:43Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 12:44Speaker 12: From what they say, he's lucky he got arrested. He
- 12:46Speaker 12: must have lost his shirt yesterday. Horse came in that
- 12:48Speaker 12: paid 20 to 1. Boy, he really must have had it.
- 12:51Speaker 2: I see.
- 12:51Speaker 6: Now, what do you know about this Cecil Johnson?
- 12:53Speaker 4: A creep. A real creep.
- 12:54Speaker 6: Did you see him tonight?
- 12:56Speaker 8: Yeah, he was in.
- 12:56Speaker 6: About what time? Let's see.
- 12:58Speaker 12: It was just before the fight on TV. That'll make
- 13:01Speaker 12: it about 6.45. Yeah, about then. About 6.45.
- 13:04Speaker 8: He come in alone?
- 13:05Speaker 4: Oh, yeah, always does. He don't have no friends.
- 13:08Speaker 6: What time did he leave? Do you remember?
- 13:09Speaker 4: Oh, he stayed around and watched the fight. Got into
- 13:11Speaker 4: an argument with a guy. Then he left about, uh, well,
- 13:14Speaker 4: let's see. I guess it must have been about 9.30,
- 13:16Speaker 4: quarter of 10.
- 13:17Speaker 6: You know a woman named Grace? We understand she's in
- 13:20Speaker 6: here quite a bit.
- 13:21Speaker 8: Grace, huh?
- 13:21Speaker 4: Well, we got a couple of Graces come in here.
- 13:23Speaker 4: What's yours look like?
- 13:24Speaker 6: About 42, dark hair, wearing a tweed coat.
- 13:28Speaker 4: Excuse me a minute, huh?
- 13:29Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 13:31Speaker 2: Hello? Yeah, it is.
- 13:33Speaker 4: No, he's not here.
- 13:34Speaker 8: He won't be back, so stop calling. I don't care
- 13:37Speaker 8: if it did pay that. Look, bud, I got no
- 13:39Speaker 8: part in the action. Now, forget the number, huh? Jackie's gone.
- 13:41Speaker 4: He's in the can.
- 13:43Speaker 8: Yeah, he's pinched.
- 13:44Speaker 6: Now, lay off, huh?
- 13:47Speaker 8: Now, let's see. Dark hair, tweed coat.
- 13:50Speaker 4: Oh, yeah, that'll be Grace Dillon.
- 13:52Speaker 2: Dillon?
- 13:52Speaker 4: Yeah, she's pretty much of a regular.
- 13:55Speaker 5: D-I-L-L-O-N.
- 13:56Speaker 4: Yeah, I guess so.
- 13:58Speaker 8: D-I-L-L-O-N.
- 14:00Speaker 4: I guess that's the way to spell it. Well, what's
- 14:02Speaker 4: all the questions? Something wrong?
- 14:03Speaker 6: What time was she in here tonight?
- 14:05Speaker 4: Who says she was?
- 14:05Speaker 6: Well, that's what we understand.
- 14:07Speaker 2: Oh.
- 14:08Speaker 12: Oh, yeah, well, there's nothing wrong around here. No reason
- 14:10Speaker 12: not to cooperate. She was here come in about 8.
- 14:13Speaker 6: What time did she leave?
- 14:14Speaker 4: I guess it was 9.30, 9.45. Did she leave alone?
- 14:17Speaker 4: I've got to think about that.
- 14:18Speaker 6: All right.
- 14:19Speaker 4: Lots of people in here with the fights, you know.
- 14:20Speaker 4: Let me think. I'm going to tear that thing right
- 14:24Speaker 4: out of the wall. He ain't here. He's been pinched.
- 14:28Speaker 12: I don't know when he'll be back, and I don't care.
- 14:31Speaker 12: You know, come to think about it, I think she
- 14:33Speaker 12: left with that Cecil.
- 14:34Speaker 4: Johnson?
- 14:35Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 14:35Speaker 6: Does either one of them have much to drink, do
- 14:37Speaker 6: you know?
- 14:37Speaker 4: Cecil had a couple of beers. It's all he needs.
- 14:39Speaker 4: Don't take much with him.
- 14:40Speaker 9: How about the Dillon woman?
- 14:42Speaker 12: She was feeling no pain when she got here. Really
- 14:45Speaker 12: carrying a load. I finally told her to take a walk,
- 14:47Speaker 12: told her I couldn't serve her no more. That's when
- 14:48Speaker 12: she left.
- 14:49Speaker 4: Her and Cecil were sitting right there next to each other.
- 14:52Speaker 4: When I told her I wouldn't pour no more for her,
- 14:53Speaker 4: she got hacked and her and Cecil left.
- 14:55Speaker 6: You know where she lives?
- 14:56Speaker 4: Not right off. I can look it up.
- 14:58Speaker 12: We keep a list of people who come in here.
- 15:00Speaker 12: Send them announcements about things, like when we get a
- 15:01Speaker 12: new piano player, things like that.
- 15:03Speaker 6: I see.
- 15:03Speaker 4: I can look it up for you. Just take a minute.
- 15:05Speaker 6: Fine, thanks.
- 15:05Speaker 8: Let's see. A, B, C.
- 15:10Speaker 4: Oh, here it is.
- 15:11Speaker 8: Darby, Dexter, Dibs. I wish they'd come in and pick
- 15:14Speaker 8: up the tab we're carrying.
- 15:16Speaker 10: Oh, let's see here.
- 15:17Speaker 6: Here it is. Here it is.
- 15:18Speaker 4: 2917 Ledgewood Drive.
- 15:21Speaker 10: 29-17.
- 15:21Speaker 8: Thank you.
- 15:22Speaker 12: You can take the card if you want. Don't make
- 15:23Speaker 12: any difference to me if she never comes back. The
- 15:25Speaker 12: way she carried on tonight. People just don't understand.
- 15:29Speaker 6: What's that?
- 15:30Speaker 12: You can just serve them so much. After that, you're
- 15:32Speaker 12: pouring 100 proof trouble. You got to shut them off sometime.
- 15:35Speaker 8: Uh-huh.
- 15:35Speaker 6: She ever come in here with her husband? Dylan? Yeah.
- 15:38Speaker 4: Couple of times. Quite a while ago, though.
- 15:40Speaker 12: They came in late one night. Sat back there in
- 15:42Speaker 12: the booth. Had a couple of quick belts.
- 15:44Speaker 4: He drinks Irish whiskey. Likes it neat. Had a big beef.
- 15:47Speaker 4: I finally had to go back and ask him to
- 15:48Speaker 4: go out. He's a real bum. He's mean.
- 15:51Speaker 8: Mm-hmm.
- 15:52Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 15:52Speaker 4: The kind of guy where to know him is to
- 15:54Speaker 4: hate him. You know the kind?
- 15:55Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 15:58Speaker 10: He ain't here.
- 15:59Speaker 8: I don't care how much you lost.
- 16:00Speaker 10: He's in the can and what.
- 16:01Speaker 3: What?
- 16:03Speaker 8: Oh, yeah, honey. Well, I didn't know it was you.
- 16:07Speaker 6: Uh-huh.
- 16:08Speaker 8: Yeah, I'll be home early, soon as I close up.
- 16:10Speaker 7: Right.
- 16:12Speaker 8: Yeah, well, I do, too.
- 16:14Speaker 6: What?
- 16:16Speaker 4: All right, honey. I love you. I do, too, meanest. Look, honey,
- 16:22Speaker 4: there's a couple of men here I gotta talk to, huh? Well, yeah,
- 16:25Speaker 4: as soon as I close up, yeah.
- 16:26Speaker 12: Goodbye, honey.
- 16:27Speaker 6: What?
- 16:29Speaker 4: Oh, yeah, yeah, all right.
- 16:32Speaker 8: There.
- 16:33Speaker 10: Bye.
- 16:35Speaker 12: It's the wife. We've just been married a couple of weeks.
- 16:38Speaker 12: She's kind of, uh, you know.
- 16:40Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 16:41Speaker 6: Did Dylan ever hit his wife, would you know?
- 16:43Speaker 2: Yeah, he did.
- 16:44Speaker 12: She came in here one night with a mouse that
- 16:46Speaker 12: had no end. Said her old man gave it to her. Say,
- 16:49Speaker 12: what's all this about, anyway? There's something wrong with Grace?
- 16:51Speaker 12: Something happen to her?
- 16:52Speaker 6: Well, we don't know yet.
- 16:54Speaker 12: Well, let me give you this for free. If there's
- 16:56Speaker 12: anything happen to her, six to one evening was her
- 16:58Speaker 12: old man.
- 16:59Speaker 4: He's a real bum. He's mean. Anything wrong, and it's
- 17:02Speaker 4: him that caused it.
- 17:03Speaker 8: You better talk to him.
- 17:04Speaker 4: You'll find out.
- 17:04Speaker 6: All right, sir. Thank you very much.
- 17:06Speaker 4: Yes, sir.
- 17:06Speaker 11: We will.
- 17:06Speaker 6: Thanks.
- 17:07Speaker 2: No, not at all.
- 17:07Speaker 4: Glad to help out. All right.
- 17:09Speaker 6: Good night.
- 17:10Speaker 8: Say, you guys going downtown?
- 17:12Speaker 6: Yeah, that's right.
- 17:13Speaker 4: To the jail?
- 17:14Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 17:15Speaker 4: Well, if you see Jackie, will you give him a
- 17:16Speaker 4: message for me?
- 17:17Speaker 6: All right. What's that?
- 17:18Speaker 4: Tell him if he gets out, I.
- 17:20Speaker 8: Don't want him back here no more.
- 17:21Speaker 6: Okay.
- 17:22Speaker 8: Guy ties up my phone.
- 17:29Speaker 6: 2.26 a.m.
- 17:30Speaker 7: We got a description of the victim's husband and checked
- 17:31Speaker 7: the name through R & I.
- 17:32Speaker 6: We were unable to come up with any criminal record
- 17:34Speaker 6: on him.
- 17:35Speaker 7: Frank and I drove out to the address given us
- 17:36Speaker 7: by the bartender. It was a large English stucco house
- 17:39Speaker 7: five blocks from where Grace Dillon had been found.
- 17:41Speaker 6: We rang the bell and waited.
- 17:43Speaker 7: An elderly woman answered the door and told us that
- 17:45Speaker 7: Herman Dillon was not in. She explained that she was
- 17:47Speaker 7: a babysitter and that she'd been called to take care
- 17:49Speaker 7: of the couple's three children.
- 17:51Speaker 6: She went on to say that Mr. Dillon left the
- 17:52Speaker 6: house at approximately 10.15 p.m.
- 17:54Speaker 7: And had not yet returned. We called the office and
- 17:56Speaker 7: arranged for a stakeout to be set up on the house.
- 17:59Speaker 7: While we waited for the officers to arrive, the babysitter
- 18:02Speaker 7: told us that the Dillons had constant fights. She said
- 18:04Speaker 7: that on several occasions, Mr. Dillon threatened to kill his
- 18:06Speaker 7: wife if she didn't spend more time at home taking
- 18:08Speaker 7: care of the children. She went on to explain that
- 18:10Speaker 7: there'd been an argument that evening and that after a
- 18:13Speaker 7: loud fight, the wife had left the house. After she'd
- 18:16Speaker 7: been gone for over an hour, Herman Dillon.
- 18:17Speaker 6: Left to find her. 3.02 a.m. The officers arrived.
- 18:21Speaker 7: We asked them to wait for the husband to return
- 18:22Speaker 7: and then to notify us immediately. Frank and I drove
- 18:25Speaker 7: downtown and checked into the crime lab. We talked to
- 18:27Speaker 7: Lieutenant Lee Jones regarding his findings. He told us that
- 18:30Speaker 7: he'd gone over the victim's clothing, but he was unable
- 18:32Speaker 7: to find any physical evidence to help us in finding
- 18:34Speaker 7: her assailant.
- 18:35Speaker 6: 3.46 a.m. We checked into the office and put in
- 18:37Speaker 6: a call to the hospital.
- 18:38Speaker 8: How do you spell that, Doc? Huh? Uh, A-D-E.
- 18:43Speaker 4: Yes, sir.
- 18:45Speaker 8: Do you have any idea when that might be?
- 18:48Speaker 5: I see, sir.
- 18:49Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 18:49Speaker 4: Well, if you'll let us know.
- 18:51Speaker 10: Right.
- 18:52Speaker 4: Yeah, the business office here will know how.
- 18:54Speaker 6: To reach us.
- 18:54Speaker 7: Right.
- 18:55Speaker 4: Thanks again.
- 18:56Speaker 2: Good night, Doc.
- 18:58Speaker 6: How is she? Well, the doctor says he's finished his examination.
- 19:00Speaker 9: She's got a frontal bone fracture, three broken ribs, cuts
- 19:03Speaker 9: and contusions.
- 19:04Speaker 6: Is she going to be all right?
- 19:05Speaker 9: Yeah, you'd think so. Says she might come out of
- 19:07Speaker 9: it any time. Says it looks like she might have
- 19:09Speaker 9: been thrown from a car.
- 19:10Speaker 6: Well, that would explain the missing shoe and purse, wouldn't it?
- 19:12Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 19:12Speaker 6: Do you have any idea when we can talk to her?
- 19:15Speaker 9: No, might not do any good anyway.
- 19:16Speaker 6: What do you mean?
- 19:17Speaker 4: Well, the doc says this kind.
- 19:18Speaker 8: Of fracture can produce a retrograde amnesia.
- 19:21Speaker 6: Huh?
- 19:21Speaker 4: She won't remember anything.
- 19:33Speaker 3: You are listening to Dragnet, the authentic story of your
- 19:36Speaker 3: police force in action. It's taking place at your dealers.
- 19:41Speaker 3: Cigarette dealers, coast to coast.
- 19:43Speaker 2: Smokers by the thousands are now changing to Chesterfield. Join
- 19:48Speaker 2: them today, and you'll be smoking the only cigarette that
- 19:52Speaker 2: gives you proof of low nicotine, highest quality. I want
- 19:56Speaker 2: you to know that's a matter of record and so
- 19:59Speaker 2: is this. As I've been telling you, Chesterfield is the
- 20:02Speaker 2: only cigarette with this.
- 20:04Speaker 4: Proven record with smokers.
- 20:06Speaker 2: No adverse effects to the nose, throat, and sinuses from
- 20:11Speaker 2: smoking Chesterfields. Good reasons why you should change to Chesterfield?
- 20:16Speaker 4: You bet. Ask for Chesterfield, regular or king size, best
- 20:22Speaker 4: for you.
- 20:33Speaker 7: At 4.02 a.m., Frank and I signed out of the
- 20:35Speaker 7: office and we went home. At 5.13 a.m., I got
- 20:37Speaker 7: a call that the husband of the victim, Herman Dillon,
- 20:39Speaker 7: had returned home.
- 20:41Speaker 6: The officers who called said that they were bringing him
- 20:42Speaker 6: down to the city hall.
- 20:44Speaker 7: I got in touch with Frank, and by the time
- 20:45Speaker 7: we got to the squad room, Dillon was already there.
- 20:48Speaker 7: He appeared dazed and acted as if he'd been drinking heavily.
- 20:51Speaker 7: We sent out for some black coffee for him. He
- 20:53Speaker 7: apparently didn't know what had happened to his wife.
- 20:55Speaker 5: What's all this about, anyway? What are you dragging me
- 20:57Speaker 5: out of my house.
- 20:58Speaker 8: Like this for?
- 20:59Speaker 6: Got a few questions we want to ask you, Dillon.
- 21:00Speaker 5: What do you got that's so important you got to
- 21:02Speaker 5: go through it at 6 in the morning?
- 21:04Speaker 6: When did you see your wife last?
- 21:05Speaker 8: About 7.30 last night. Why?
- 21:07Speaker 9: How do you and your wife get along?
- 21:09Speaker 8: We've been married for 10 years.
- 21:11Speaker 6: Not much of an answer, mister.
- 21:13Speaker 8: You're not married.
- 21:14Speaker 5: Been married 10 years and that's an answer. Been married
- 21:17Speaker 5: 10 years, it's all the answer you need.
- 21:19Speaker 6: Well, maybe you better spell it out for me.
- 21:21Speaker 5: After that long, you have a few disagreements, bound to.
- 21:24Speaker 5: You know, being together all that time.
- 21:26Speaker 6: You and your wife had a disagreement last night, did you? Yeah,
- 21:29Speaker 6: we had a discussion.
- 21:30Speaker 2: What about?
- 21:31Speaker 8: I don't think that's any of your business.
- 21:33Speaker 6: Yeah, well, maybe it is. Now, what'd you argue about?
- 21:35Speaker 8: Her running around. Wasn't a real argument, just a discussion.
- 21:39Speaker 6: Well, we got it. It was more than that.
- 21:41Speaker 8: Then you got it wrong.
- 21:42Speaker 4: We heard you hit her a couple of times.
- 21:43Speaker 8: That's a lie.
- 21:46Speaker 5: I might have shoved her a little. She had it coming, though,
- 21:48Speaker 5: all the time running around. We got three kids, three
- 21:51Speaker 5: little kids, and she doesn't care that for them. Always
- 21:54Speaker 5: going out, hanging around those cheap bars, boozing it up.
- 21:57Speaker 5: I came home the other night.
- 21:59Speaker 8: She'd walked out and left the kids all alone, all
- 22:01Speaker 8: by themselves. Didn't even get a sitter for them.
- 22:03Speaker 6: Where you been tonight?
- 22:04Speaker 1: Why?
- 22:05Speaker 8: Why you have to know that?
- 22:06Speaker 6: You want to tell us? Yeah.
- 22:09Speaker 5: After Grace and me had the fight, she walked out.
- 22:11Speaker 5: I waited for her to come home. Then when she didn't,
- 22:13Speaker 5: I went out to find her.
- 22:14Speaker 6: Did you? Did you find her?
- 22:16Speaker 8: No, I looked all over for her.
- 22:17Speaker 5: All the bars along the boulevard, but she wasn't there.
- 22:20Speaker 6: Where you been since the bars closed?
- 22:22Speaker 8: Walking around.
- 22:23Speaker 6: In all this rain?
- 22:23Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 22:24Speaker 5: I've been trying to figure out what to do, trying
- 22:26Speaker 5: to make up my mind.
- 22:27Speaker 2: About what?
- 22:28Speaker 8: What I should do with Grace. Things can't go on
- 22:30Speaker 8: like this.
- 22:31Speaker 5: They just can't.
- 22:32Speaker 6: We've heard from some of your wife's friends that you
- 22:34Speaker 6: made threats in their lives, is that right?
- 22:35Speaker 8: Who told you that?
- 22:36Speaker 6: We just heard it. Is it true?
- 22:39Speaker 5: I suppose so. If I'd have found her tonight, I'd
- 22:41Speaker 5: have maybe killed her. I've never been so mad before.
- 22:44Speaker 4: You see anybody you knew tonight?
- 22:46Speaker 2: What?
- 22:46Speaker 6: When you were walking around, did you see anybody you knew?
- 22:49Speaker 2: No, why?
- 22:50Speaker 6: When you got no way to prove where you were.
- 22:52Speaker 8: Why'd I have to do that?
- 22:53Speaker 6: Might make things easier on you.
- 22:54Speaker 5: Hey, what's this all about, anyway? Why are you asking
- 22:57Speaker 5: all these questions about me and Grace? What are you
- 22:59Speaker 5: trying to say? Where is Grace, you know?
- 23:01Speaker 8: Yeah. Well, where is she? What's happened to her?
- 23:04Speaker 6: She's in the hospital. She had an accident.
- 23:06Speaker 4: It's pretty bad.
- 23:07Speaker 8: What kind of an accident? Looks like she was beaten.
- 23:09Speaker 8: And you think I did it?
- 23:10Speaker 6: Might have been you.
- 23:11Speaker 8: Is she alive?
- 23:12Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 23:14Speaker 8: You think I beat her up?
- 23:15Speaker 2: Did you?
- 23:15Speaker 5: No, I maybe wanted to, knocked some sense into her,
- 23:18Speaker 5: but I didn't do it.
- 23:18Speaker 6: Can you prove where you were tonight?
- 23:20Speaker 5: Why?
- 23:20Speaker 4: Can you prove where you were?
- 23:22Speaker 8: No, I don't even know myself. Hey, you really think
- 23:25Speaker 8: I did it?
- 23:26Speaker 6: That's what we're trying to find out.
- 23:27Speaker 8: You know, I was pretty drunk tonight.
- 23:29Speaker 4: I got real loaded.
- 23:30Speaker 8: That's a terrible point.
- 23:31Speaker 6: Yeah, let me see your hands, Winnie.
- 23:32Speaker 2: Why?
- 23:32Speaker 6: Let me see them.
- 23:33Speaker 10: All right.
- 23:34Speaker 6: Put them up there, both of them.
- 23:35Speaker 10: Here.
- 23:36Speaker 6: Where'd you get those bruises? I don't know.
- 23:37Speaker 5: I don't remember.
- 23:38Speaker 6: You better try. This is pretty important.
- 23:39Speaker 8: I told you I was drunk.
- 23:40Speaker 6: There's only one thing that'll put bruises like that on
- 23:42Speaker 6: your hands.
- 23:42Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 23:43Speaker 7: You hit something pretty hard. Herman Dillon was detained pending
- 23:52Speaker 7: further investigation. We'd called the hospital, but there was no
- 23:54Speaker 7: change in Mrs. Dillon's condition. Because of the lack of
- 23:57Speaker 7: physical evidence, her testimony was essential in apprehending the person
- 24:00Speaker 7: who'd beaten her. We had two prime suspects. Cecil Johnson,
- 24:04Speaker 7: who was known to have been in her company when.
- 24:05Speaker 6: She left the bar.
- 24:06Speaker 7: Johnson's record indicated that he was capable of committing the crime.
- 24:09Speaker 7: On the other hand, the victim's husband had stated that
- 24:11Speaker 7: he might kill her. He was unable to explain his
- 24:14Speaker 7: movements at the time of the attack. The only person
- 24:16Speaker 7: who could tell us the true story was the victim herself,
- 24:18Speaker 7: and we had the doctor's statement that she might not
- 24:20Speaker 7: remember the events immediately leading up to the beating. At 10.14 a.m.
- 24:24Speaker 7: the following morning, the officer called from the hospital telling
- 24:26Speaker 7: us that Mrs. Dillon had regained consciousness and could be questioned.
- 24:30Speaker 7: The doctor told us that she was calling for her
- 24:32Speaker 7: husband and asked that we bring Dylan with us. We
- 24:35Speaker 7: went by the city jail and picked him up, and
- 24:36Speaker 7: then we drove over to the hospital. The doctor told
- 24:39Speaker 7: us that Mrs. Dylan was in a weak condition and
- 24:40Speaker 7: that we couldn't talk to her.
- 24:41Speaker 6: At any length.
- 24:42Speaker 7: Frank, Dylan, and I went into her room and waited
- 24:44Speaker 7: for her to open her eyes.
- 24:45Speaker 8: Is that you, Herman?
- 24:47Speaker 2: Yes, dear.
- 24:48Speaker 11: You're not mad at me, are you?
- 24:50Speaker 8: You're not still mad at me?
- 24:52Speaker 10: No, dear, I'm not.
- 24:53Speaker 11: Oscar, I was afraid you still were mad. You know, Herman,
- 25:00Speaker 11: you shouldn't have hit me like you did. I know
- 25:01Speaker 11: maybe I had a reason, but you shouldn't have hit me.
- 25:04Speaker 6: Can you tell us what happened, Mrs. Dillon?
- 25:06Speaker 11: Who are you?
- 25:07Speaker 6: Police officers.
- 25:08Speaker 11: What are you doing here?
- 25:09Speaker 6: Trying to find out who did this to you.
- 25:11Speaker 4: It wasn't anybody did it.
- 25:13Speaker 8: Ma'am?
- 25:14Speaker 11: It wasn't anybody.
- 25:14Speaker 8: I did it myself.
- 25:16Speaker 11: Silly did it all by myself.
- 25:17Speaker 6: I don't believe I understand, Mrs. Dillon.
- 25:19Speaker 11: Herman and me had a fight and I walked out.
- 25:22Speaker 11: I was going to leave him. I went down and
- 25:24Speaker 11: had a few drinks, just a few. And I got
- 25:26Speaker 11: to thinking about me and Herman... How I was such
- 25:29Speaker 11: a bad wife. I got to thinking about the kids
- 25:32Speaker 11: and how I was a bad mother. You aren't still
- 25:35Speaker 11: mad at me, are you, Herman? Really, in your heart?
- 25:38Speaker 8: No, Grace, I'm glad you're going to be all right.
- 25:40Speaker 8: That's all that counts.
- 25:41Speaker 6: You want to tell us what happened, Miss Dillon, please?
- 25:44Speaker 11: I was on my way home. I was going back.
- 25:47Speaker 11: Cecil was walking home with me. It was raining pretty hard,
- 25:50Speaker 11: and we came to a gutter that was full of water.
- 25:52Speaker 11: I stepped up on the curb to go around it.
- 25:55Speaker 11: I didn't want to step in the water, and I fell.
- 25:59Speaker 11: Fell down the hill, rolled all the way to the bottom.
- 26:02Speaker 11: All the way to the next street.
- 26:04Speaker 10: I remember falling.
- 26:05Speaker 11: I remember laying in the street down below and how
- 26:08Speaker 11: I couldn't move. Didn't know about anything else after that.
- 26:12Speaker 11: Until just when you got here, Len, I don't remember
- 26:15Speaker 11: much of anything.
- 26:17Speaker 6: You mean that you fell down yourself but nobody beat
- 26:19Speaker 6: you up, huh?
- 26:20Speaker 11: No.
- 26:21Speaker 4: Herman hit me when I was home.
- 26:22Speaker 11: He got mad at me and hit me.
- 26:24Speaker 8: But he was right.
- 26:26Speaker 11: You were right, honey.
- 26:27Speaker 5: Real right.
- 26:29Speaker 11: But it's going to be different, I promise you, just
- 26:31Speaker 11: as long as you ain't still mad at me. That's
- 26:33Speaker 11: all that matters, that you ain't mad.
- 26:34Speaker 10: Now, take it easy, honey.
- 26:36Speaker 8: Everything's going to be all right. Just take it easy
- 26:38Speaker 8: and try to get some sleep.
- 26:40Speaker 6: I love you, Herman.
- 26:41Speaker 4: I love you very much.
- 26:43Speaker 11: And I'm going to make it all up to you,
- 26:44Speaker 11: all the bad times.
- 26:46Speaker 10: I'm going to make it all.
- 26:47Speaker 11: Up to you.
- 26:47Speaker 4: I love you too, Grace. Now, you go to sleep.
- 26:50Speaker 6: Get some rest.
- 26:52Speaker 4: All right, honey.
- 26:54Speaker 6: All right, thank you, Miss Dillon. We better go.
- 27:02Speaker 10: You gonna want me anymore, Sergeant?
- 27:04Speaker 6: No, I don't think so.
- 27:04Speaker 10: I wonder if she means it.
- 27:07Speaker 4: If she really does.
- 27:08Speaker 6: What's that?
- 27:09Speaker 8: About making it up to the kids how things are
- 27:10Speaker 8: gonna be different.
- 27:12Speaker 6: Well, I don't know.
- 27:12Speaker 8: She said she would. That's just it. She said it
- 27:15Speaker 8: so many times before.
- 27:16Speaker 2: The story you have just heard is true.
