Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Polly Fools go here with Tony Fosco. And you may
- 0:03Speaker 1: notice there was no intro music. You're probably picked up
- 0:06Speaker 1: on that. In fact, this isn't going to be a
- 0:08Speaker 1: usual show today because we got some very bad news
- 0:11Speaker 1: over the weekend.
- 0:12Speaker 2: Done not the Sixers, somehow blowing it to the shop next. Oh,
- 0:16Speaker 2: that was terrible. This news was even worse.
- 0:19Speaker 1: The sports community lost one of the all time great personalities,
- 0:24Speaker 1: Howie Schwab. And yeah, as you probably know, how he
- 0:27Speaker 1: had been a guest on our show twice and each
- 0:29Speaker 1: time we have to say, Tony, don't we He was
- 0:31Speaker 1: brave and courageous enough to put his legendary reputation on
- 0:36Speaker 1: the line to face you, Tony in a sports trivia
- 0:39Speaker 1: showdown to see who the real sultant of sports trivia was.
- 0:42Speaker 3: I got to give him credit, bro, It took a
- 0:45Speaker 3: lot of guts to step in and take on somebody
- 0:47Speaker 3: with as much sports knowledge as I have.
- 0:49Speaker 1: Bro exactly, and as we all know, you know, Tony
- 0:52Speaker 1: decisively crushed him in both episodes. But that being said,
- 0:56Speaker 1: you know, after we got this news, Tony, we did
- 0:58Speaker 1: go back and listen into those episodes and we did,
- 1:02Speaker 1: you know, maybe the playing ground. There wasn't so even
- 1:04Speaker 1: you know, maybe the questions weren't of equal difficult shall
- 1:09Speaker 1: we say, Yeah.
- 1:10Speaker 3: I mean I could see how somebody could come to
- 1:12Speaker 3: that conclusion.
- 1:13Speaker 2: Maybe perhaps, yeah, maybe.
- 1:15Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:15Speaker 1: Anyway, we decided, you know, it's a special tribute to Howie.
- 1:19Speaker 1: We're going to play for you now both of his
- 1:22Speaker 1: appearances on the show, because they were truly some of
- 1:25Speaker 1: our favorite moments Tony, you know, I mean, maybe not
- 1:28Speaker 1: for him sometimes because he did seem to get a
- 1:30Speaker 1: little testy with us.
- 1:31Speaker 2: Yeah, he did seem that way a little bit. I
- 1:33Speaker 2: don't know why. Yeah, you know.
- 1:35Speaker 1: Anyway, his first appearance came on the show in January
- 1:38Speaker 1: of twenty twenty one, and well, there's no video except
- 1:41Speaker 1: for a social clip we were able to find because well,
- 1:44Speaker 1: you know, there was no.
- 1:45Speaker 2: YouTube back then. Yeah, it didn't exist.
- 1:47Speaker 1: Yeah, we do have the audio, which is still terrific. Nonetheless,
- 1:51Speaker 1: so all right, let's cue that up here. It is
- 1:53Speaker 1: our two on one with the legendary Howie Schwab saturnight
- 1:59Speaker 1: there in the world.
- 2:00Speaker 2: All right.
- 2:00Speaker 1: Our guest is known, you know, for some reason as
- 2:03Speaker 1: the Sultan of sportscrivia former ESPN personality started out there
- 2:08Speaker 1: as a researcher producer. Then he became the star of
- 2:12Speaker 1: the Sportscrivia game show there called Stump the Schwab. Anyway,
- 2:16Speaker 1: let's get him on here, Howie Schwab, Welcome to the show.
- 2:19Speaker 5: Yeah, for some reason they called me that. You're right,
- 2:22Speaker 5: I agree.
- 2:24Speaker 1: That's what we want to know. Who came up with that?
- 2:27Speaker 1: You give that nickname to yourself? Where'd that come from?
- 2:29Speaker 3: Oh?
- 2:29Speaker 4: Hell? No? No?
- 2:31Speaker 2: Oh all right, all right, I know some.
- 2:34Speaker 4: Of the ESPN came up with that, I guess.
- 2:36Speaker 1: But well, that's surprising that this ESPN person never heard
- 2:40Speaker 1: of us, because, as you may know, some people do,
- 2:43Speaker 1: some people don't. We were actually offered a game show
- 2:47Speaker 1: by ESPN way back in the day. We had to
- 2:50Speaker 1: turn it down due to other obligations.
- 2:53Speaker 2: But that's why we want to know.
- 2:54Speaker 1: And you know, I asked this respectfully, How the hell
- 2:57Speaker 1: did they give you a show.
- 3:00Speaker 4: Me a show because someone was drunk? I mean, let's
- 3:04Speaker 4: be honest.
- 3:04Speaker 1: Oh well, that does kind of explain a lot of
- 3:07Speaker 1: decisions at that network.
- 3:08Speaker 5: No, seriously, what happened was Mark Shapiro, the senior vice
- 3:13Speaker 5: president of ESPN, call me in his office. I had
- 3:17Speaker 5: no idea why And he said, we're starting a new show.
- 3:22Speaker 5: It's called Stumped the Schwab. I'm like, what, okay, when
- 3:26Speaker 5: I lose others, I'm just going to try to have fun.
- 3:29Speaker 5: And we went four years. I did okay, I had
- 3:35Speaker 5: won eighty percent.
- 3:36Speaker 4: I did lose.
- 3:38Speaker 2: I did lose.
- 3:39Speaker 5: And the funny thing is one time I was in
- 3:41Speaker 5: Las Vegas and someone said, oh, you never lost it.
- 3:46Speaker 5: To be honest with you, I was sixty four and sixteen.
- 3:49Speaker 5: I do know that for a fact. And the guy goes, oh,
- 3:53Speaker 5: you sucked.
- 3:55Speaker 2: It might have been me.
- 3:56Speaker 1: Yeah, that might have been Tony, because that's what we
- 3:57Speaker 1: want to know. You lost the show called Stump the
- 4:00Speaker 1: Schwab sixteen times. So shouldn't the people have that beat you?
- 4:04Speaker 1: Shouldn't they be the ones who then become the star
- 4:07Speaker 1: of the show and you know, they kick your ass
- 4:08Speaker 1: to the carb.
- 4:09Speaker 2: Yeah, it should be called beat the Guy who Beat
- 4:11Speaker 2: the Schwab.
- 4:12Speaker 4: Well, actually a couple of them probably could have. A
- 4:16Speaker 4: couple of them were very very good.
- 4:18Speaker 5: One guy Nabata Ales was really good, and Joel the
- 4:22Speaker 5: pole Redwanska was really good.
- 4:24Speaker 2: The Mafia guy what kind of name is that?
- 4:27Speaker 4: One guy was really obnoxious to me.
- 4:30Speaker 5: Oh, and I did not really care for him, to
- 4:34Speaker 5: be honest though, by gones are by gones now. But well,
- 4:38Speaker 5: we want to know what He came on the show
- 4:42Speaker 5: and said, to be the man, you've got to beat
- 4:44Speaker 5: the man.
- 4:45Speaker 4: Oh, now I'm playing against Rick Flair.
- 4:47Speaker 1: Okay, yeah, nature boy, I like it. Well, what happened
- 4:51Speaker 1: with this guy? You know you're get in the fight
- 4:53Speaker 1: with him? Did it become like, you know, stomp the schwab?
- 4:55Speaker 2: Yeah? Why didn't you kick his ass?
- 4:58Speaker 5: Uh?
- 4:58Speaker 4: Actually I might have liked to do.
- 5:01Speaker 6: That, you know, but nex time you call us it
- 5:04Speaker 6: turned out he beat me twice, and then the third time,
- 5:10Speaker 6: in the first round of the finals, he got knocked out.
- 5:14Speaker 4: So it was like, are you kidding me? I wanted
- 5:16Speaker 4: to meet you in the finals so bad and then
- 5:18Speaker 4: you blew it. Okay, well, such his life.
- 5:21Speaker 1: Yeah, they should have scripted at WWE style.
- 5:24Speaker 2: That would have worked. You know.
- 5:26Speaker 1: You mentioned the show was canceled after four seasons. I
- 5:29Speaker 1: think I know why. I think it was because it
- 5:30Speaker 1: was too easy. What do you think went wrong there?
- 5:34Speaker 4: Oh? I don't think anything really went wrong. It was
- 5:37Speaker 4: just programming decided to it costs money.
- 5:42Speaker 5: To do the show because we taped to New York
- 5:44Speaker 5: and I think it might have been budget partially. I
- 5:49Speaker 5: don't think anything really went wrong. Everyone who worked on
- 5:52Speaker 5: the show did a great job. We had a lot
- 5:54Speaker 5: of fun. No, they didn't give me the answers. I've
- 5:57Speaker 5: heard that one before too.
- 5:59Speaker 2: Oh no, that says me. My next question then.
- 6:01Speaker 4: Yeah, that was my that was my that was my goal,
- 6:03Speaker 4: save you question.
- 6:04Speaker 1: Well, look, we don't have a lot of time ant
- 6:06Speaker 1: you know, beat around the bush, So let's get to
- 6:08Speaker 1: the real reason we brought you here. You know, we
- 6:10Speaker 1: have that nickname the Sultan the Sports Trivia, but we
- 6:13Speaker 1: want Tony here to challenge you for the title, you know,
- 6:16Speaker 1: w W Style.
- 6:18Speaker 2: So we're gonna play a game.
- 6:19Speaker 1: We're gonna pit you against Tony, all right, and I'm
- 6:22Speaker 1: gonna ask each of you some randomly selected questions.
- 6:26Speaker 5: Well, well one way way, wait a second here, if
- 6:28Speaker 5: we're doing this, I think Tony is more like Baron mckil'
- 6:33Speaker 5: sekluna who or maybe or maybe Renee Goulay and I'll
- 6:38Speaker 5: be Sam Martino.
- 6:40Speaker 1: You're going with the classic wrestlers there, that's right exactly.
- 6:44Speaker 2: I was gonna go with Ivan Puttin we can go
- 6:46Speaker 2: back to.
- 6:46Speaker 5: Randy Savage, or we can go back to Ultimately, this.
- 6:50Speaker 2: Is a showdown. I'll be will be Andre let's go.
- 6:53Speaker 2: All right, well here you go. Here's how it's going You.
- 6:55Speaker 4: Telling me I'm that heavy?
- 6:56Speaker 2: Come on, no big, big personality? He meant legends, sure,
- 7:02Speaker 2: princess bride? All right, maybe, who knows. Here's how it's
- 7:06Speaker 2: going to work.
- 7:06Speaker 1: The first to get three correct answers wins the title.
- 7:09Speaker 2: You got that, both of you there?
- 7:12Speaker 4: All right, Tony, We're gonna start like a steel gage.
- 7:15Speaker 2: All right?
- 7:16Speaker 1: How are we enough talking? You're delaying here because I
- 7:18Speaker 1: know you're nervous. All right, here, look you both know
- 7:21Speaker 1: the rules. So it's time for the Sultan of Sports
- 7:25Speaker 1: trivia showdown. Yeah, that's what we call them, the business
- 7:32Speaker 1: sound effects.
- 7:33Speaker 2: Welcome to the thunder Doll. First question of Tony. Ready, Tony, here,
- 7:38Speaker 2: this one's for your goal.
- 7:40Speaker 1: Before Nick Foles led the Eagles to a triumphant victory
- 7:44Speaker 1: in the Super Bowl, who was the last Eagles quarterback
- 7:48Speaker 1: to lead his team to an appearance in the Super Bowl?
- 7:51Speaker 2: You know that question is easy for me. The answer
- 7:57Speaker 2: is number five. Well, what are you doing there?
- 8:03Speaker 1: How are we that question is not for you. Stop
- 8:05Speaker 1: trying to show off. Correct Donovan McNabb, All right, how.
- 8:08Speaker 2: One point for me? Oh yeah, that one point for Tony?
- 8:11Speaker 2: All right? How are this one's for you? In the
- 8:12Speaker 2: same ballpark.
- 8:14Speaker 1: We all know Donovan McNabb was the second overall pick
- 8:17Speaker 1: in the nineteen ninety nine NFL draft, But which player
- 8:21Speaker 1: was drafted by the Eagles in the seventh round of
- 8:25Speaker 1: the same draft with the two hundred and eighth overall pick.
- 8:33Speaker 4: Oh my god, again, remind.
- 8:35Speaker 2: You these are randomly selected questions.
- 8:38Speaker 4: Wow.
- 8:39Speaker 5: You know it's funny because I knew the one in
- 8:42Speaker 5: the sixth round, but uh.
- 8:45Speaker 2: Listen them to a try and qualify it. Come on,
- 8:48Speaker 2: we asked you.
- 8:48Speaker 4: No, no, no, no, that's a good one. Uh seventh round.
- 8:53Speaker 1: Let's see, we're gonna need to send a timer here,
- 8:56Speaker 1: you know, yeah, show only twenty minutes?
- 8:58Speaker 2: Here rang the bell? Sure are five seconds?
- 9:02Speaker 4: How we went twenty time limit?
- 9:04Speaker 2: Match?
- 9:04Speaker 4: I get it?
- 9:06Speaker 2: Three.
- 9:08Speaker 4: I was good for a great guest, but I can't
- 9:10Speaker 4: even do that.
- 9:11Speaker 1: Well, you can stop with the excuses because your time's up.
- 9:15Speaker 2: Tony.
- 9:15Speaker 1: You know this won't count toward your point total, but
- 9:19Speaker 1: just out of curiosity, can you answer this one.
- 9:21Speaker 3: You know, I think I can, Jed, we've tight end
- 9:27Speaker 3: that of our again, good practice squad.
- 9:30Speaker 1: All right, all right, well that's so at the end
- 9:33Speaker 1: the round one, it's Tony one, Howie zero.
- 9:35Speaker 2: All right, Tony, this one's for you.
- 9:37Speaker 1: When the Eagles made their first appearance in the Super
- 9:40Speaker 1: Bowl back in nineteen eighty one, which player who became
- 9:43Speaker 1: an ESPN personality too was the quarterback?
- 9:47Speaker 2: You know? Once again, Howie, please, this one is easy
- 9:51Speaker 2: to think. This one's easy for me.
- 9:54Speaker 3: Maybe not a lot of you out there don't know
- 9:56Speaker 3: it like Howie, but it's Ron Joe Wall.
- 10:01Speaker 2: You are correct, very good, Tony.
- 10:03Speaker 1: That's two points for you, all right, Howie, Now to you,
- 10:06Speaker 1: Now to you, Saint Paul Park. When Ron Juwarski made
- 10:11Speaker 1: his first start for the Eagles back in Week one
- 10:13Speaker 1: of the nineteen seventy seven season against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers,
- 10:17Speaker 1: who caught his very first touchdown pass.
- 10:24Speaker 4: I'm gonna guess Vince Papali, but I'll be wrong.
- 10:27Speaker 1: Well, then you're right about being wrong, because you're wrong, Tony.
- 10:32Speaker 1: You know this won't count toward your point total, but
- 10:35Speaker 1: just out of curiosity, do you know the answer to this.
- 10:38Speaker 2: One, of course, who can forget touchdown? Tommy Sullivan? There
- 10:44Speaker 2: you go.
- 10:45Speaker 1: It was Tommy Sullivan, the running back, and how he
- 10:48Speaker 1: kind of disappointed he didn't get that one. You're down
- 10:51Speaker 1: the zero to two, so I'm gonna throw it to you, Howie.
- 10:56Speaker 1: This one's for you, all right, last chance he had
- 10:58Speaker 1: to stay alive.
- 10:59Speaker 4: Here we go, focus in staying alive. Staying alive.
- 11:04Speaker 1: Uh, all right, you're not going to win any recording
- 11:07Speaker 1: contracts either, but right here we go. Before Nick Foles
- 11:11Speaker 1: won Super Bowl MVP, he led his team to victory
- 11:15Speaker 1: against the Vikings in the NFC Championship. Please tell us
- 11:19Speaker 1: his yards per attempt in that game, and make sure
- 11:22Speaker 1: to be accurate to the second decimal point.
- 11:26Speaker 2: Or unfortunately, we will have to count it as wrong.
- 11:32Speaker 4: Thirteen point one. Say that number again, thirteen point one.
- 11:37Speaker 7: Oh well, unfortunately, like all your other answers, that is incorrect.
- 11:42Speaker 7: You know, we do appreciate you being so bullish on
- 11:45Speaker 7: Nick Foles. But hey, Tony, just out of curiosity again,
- 11:49Speaker 7: do you know this one?
- 11:50Speaker 2: You know, if memory serves me correctly, I believe he
- 11:55Speaker 2: averaged somewhere about ten point six seven yards per day
- 12:00Speaker 2: a tempt in that game.
- 12:01Speaker 1: Wow the nose, Tony, well done, and that means you
- 12:08Speaker 1: are the winner. So Howie, this must mean we need
- 12:12Speaker 1: you right now to tell Tony. Please tell Tony and
- 12:16Speaker 1: crown him as the sultan of sportscrevia.
- 12:20Speaker 2: Please go ahead, come on, well.
- 12:22Speaker 5: Tony, you're clearly the Sultan of Eagles sports trivia.
- 12:32Speaker 2: You can't even lose with plan.
- 12:36Speaker 5: Let me be honest, Let me be honest. I'm more
- 12:39Speaker 5: like Steve Lombardi in wrestling. Maybe quick to Rick McGraw. Uh,
- 12:44Speaker 5: tonight against Andre the Giant and whole you're making.
- 12:49Speaker 1: You're making all these excuses for yourself, and I'll show
- 12:54Speaker 1: you the door because guess what you're how are you doing?
- 13:00Speaker 2: You're doing terrible? Get out of it. That was congratulations, Tony.
- 13:11Speaker 2: You really showed him. I kicked his ass. Yeah, yeah,
- 13:15Speaker 2: you sure did.
- 13:15Speaker 4: I'm still on here, guys, what what what? What?
- 13:19Speaker 1: Well?
- 13:19Speaker 2: That's our producer, Jay? What are you doing? Jay? Hang
- 13:22Speaker 2: up on this guy?
- 13:23Speaker 4: You didn't disconnect me? Come on, guys, all right.
- 13:28Speaker 1: Well there he's gone finally. You know he hangs on
- 13:31Speaker 1: there because the guy gets can't stop talking. Yeah, h
- 13:36Speaker 1: you know, Tony in retrospect looking back now listening to
- 13:40Speaker 1: that those questions, you know, maybe they were a little
- 13:44Speaker 1: unfairly balanced there.
- 13:45Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean I could see again how somebody may
- 13:48Speaker 3: come to that conclusion.
- 13:49Speaker 2: Maybe just a little bit. Yeah, well, in our defense,
- 13:52Speaker 2: we did give Howie another shot. Yeah, we did took
- 13:55Speaker 2: him a couple of years.
- 13:56Speaker 1: To come back, maybe because you know, he was busy
- 13:58Speaker 1: or just angry at us, probably, but we invited him
- 14:02Speaker 1: back on the show to try and win his title back.
- 14:04Speaker 1: You know, give him that fairp of dunity, very fair
- 14:07Speaker 1: and well, you know, when we listen back to this episode, though, Tony,
- 14:12Speaker 1: you know this one may have been not so balanced
- 14:14Speaker 1: as well. I guess you could say anyway, you know,
- 14:17Speaker 1: you judge for yourself. All right, here it is. This
- 14:20Speaker 1: one's from a March of twenty twenty three.
- 14:22Speaker 2: Queue that up here. It is the one and only
- 14:26Speaker 2: Howie Schwab Satite all right.
- 14:30Speaker 1: For decades now, this guy's been considered one of the
- 14:35Speaker 1: legends over at ESPN. He worked behind the scenes as
- 14:38Speaker 1: a researcher and producer, you know the story, before becoming
- 14:42Speaker 1: on air co host of the popular sports trivia game
- 14:45Speaker 1: show Stump the Schwab, where he became known around the
- 14:49Speaker 1: world as the Sultan of Sports Trivia, the title which,
- 14:55Speaker 1: as you remember, he lost right here on the show
- 14:58Speaker 1: two years ago when Tony absolutely just wiped the floor
- 15:03Speaker 1: with him and they totally fair, totally fair sports trivia competition.
- 15:09Speaker 2: So we do have to give him his.
- 15:10Speaker 1: Due for being man enough to come on the show again.
- 15:13Speaker 1: Show his face after that total humiliation. How we want
- 15:17Speaker 1: to respect Welcome back to the show.
- 15:19Speaker 2: Welcome back, Howie.
- 15:21Speaker 4: How much are you paying me for this? Oh?
- 15:23Speaker 2: We're off with a pang. How we're going to start?
- 15:26Speaker 2: Is that how you started negotiations with the ESPN No.
- 15:30Speaker 1: Wonder they left you on the side of the highway
- 15:32Speaker 1: in Bristol.
- 15:33Speaker 4: Well after that production? Now, how you kicked my ass
- 15:37Speaker 4: the last time?
- 15:37Speaker 5: Great, we were We were very respectful about it, very
- 15:41Speaker 5: very respectful.
- 15:42Speaker 4: You weren't an eagle jersey. I'm a giant man.
- 15:44Speaker 2: Good job, right, going to like this.
- 15:48Speaker 1: Look, we know you're back, you're Howie. You want to
- 15:52Speaker 1: win your title back and we're going to give you
- 15:53Speaker 1: that shot. But first, there was a moment this week.
- 15:56Speaker 1: You may have seen it on ESPN's first take with
- 15:59Speaker 1: Steven A.
- 16:00Speaker 4: Smith.
- 16:01Speaker 1: Totally Michael Kay for attempting to talk your reaction to
- 16:06Speaker 1: that clip.
- 16:08Speaker 5: I think it's awful because the NHL has very much
- 16:12Speaker 5: earned its right to be among the major sports.
- 16:15Speaker 2: There you go up there.
- 16:18Speaker 4: I understand if you.
- 16:19Speaker 5: Don't want to say it's ESPN will say the NBA
- 16:23Speaker 5: is above it, and we'll say baseball and football. Of course,
- 16:27Speaker 5: the NFL, it's up there, Okay, But the bottom line
- 16:30Speaker 5: is this, look the look, Look what the Boston Bruins
- 16:34Speaker 5: have done this year. One of the greatest years ever, David.
- 16:41Speaker 1: These are things every American knows. Now, we want to
- 16:45Speaker 1: know you worked behind the scenes there. When you were there,
- 16:47Speaker 1: did you notice a strong anti hockey bias at ESPN.
- 16:53Speaker 4: I would say that hockey did not get its just
- 16:56Speaker 4: due when it was not on the network.
- 16:59Speaker 5: I mean the stories they did were like the Russian spies, uh,
- 17:04Speaker 5: involving hockey.
- 17:06Speaker 4: There were others.
- 17:07Speaker 5: I mean, no, I don't think they jumped the job
- 17:10Speaker 5: it was off the air. Once it came back on
- 17:13Speaker 5: the air, I thought that, well, they gave it a
- 17:18Speaker 5: little more respect.
- 17:20Speaker 4: They they have that TV showed the point. Yes, they
- 17:24Speaker 4: give it a little.
- 17:25Speaker 2: Bit replace first take.
- 17:26Speaker 3: In my opinion, yeah, they should have Barry Melrose on
- 17:29Speaker 3: every morning first take.
- 17:31Speaker 2: They're missing the point literally, Ye, yeah, exactly.
- 17:34Speaker 4: Would have to get up early. I don't know if
