Latest / Halo Territory: A Los Angeles Angels Podcast / SORI (NOT TO) WORRY: Jose Soriano's dominance helps Angels salvage series against the Blue Jays
Transcript
- 0:08Speaker 1: Well, hey, Angel fans, welcome back to Halo territory. I
- 0:11Speaker 1: am Mike D. Giovanna, former Ela Times Baseball writer and
- 0:14Speaker 1: host of the show, joined by my regular co host
- 0:17Speaker 1: Mark Trumbo, the former Angel slugger Mark. Happy Sunday to you.
- 0:21Speaker 1: How are you doing today?
- 0:24Speaker 2: I'm great Mother's Day recording after Angels win. Yeah, the
- 0:30Speaker 2: Halo hashtag all looked great on TV. A lot of
- 0:36Speaker 2: a lot of smiles, a lot of celebrating, a lot
- 0:38Speaker 2: of Trent Rush being excited, and yeah, you know, it
- 0:42Speaker 2: was a good day for the Angel so we can
- 0:44Speaker 2: get with some of the topics that that happened over
- 0:47Speaker 2: the weekend.
- 0:48Speaker 1: Yeah, they did lose two out of three in Toronto,
- 0:51Speaker 1: so they lost a series, but we're able to salvage
- 0:53Speaker 1: it with a pretty good win on Sunday. And one
- 0:56Speaker 1: of the big storylines of two main storyline Sunday was
- 1:00Speaker 1: Jose Soriano and boy, that first inning did not look good.
- 1:06Speaker 3: Sorry.
- 1:06Speaker 1: Through twenty five pitches, gave up a run, his velocity
- 1:10Speaker 1: of his sinker and his fourth seamer was down by
- 1:12Speaker 1: one to two miles an hour. He was yanking a
- 1:15Speaker 1: bunch of sliders outside. We weren't sure if he.
- 1:18Speaker 3: Was heard or not.
- 1:19Speaker 1: And this was all coming off a four inning, five run,
- 1:22Speaker 1: eight hit loss to the White Sox in his previous start. Mark,
- 1:26Speaker 1: what was your concern level in that first inning?
- 1:30Speaker 2: I messaged you almost immediately and said it didn't really
- 1:33Speaker 2: look right, and it didn't why I think, you know,
- 1:39Speaker 2: what I've been doing is just comparing it to the
- 1:41Speaker 2: starts earlier in the season, some of those really really
- 1:44Speaker 2: good ones, which may not be fair, but it didn't
- 1:46Speaker 2: look anything like those starts and the stuff.
- 1:48Speaker 3: The four seamer.
- 1:49Speaker 2: I didn't see a single one today that reminded me
- 1:53Speaker 2: of what I saw previously. The knuckle curve, I did
- 1:56Speaker 2: see one good one circa this bottom of seven thirty
- 2:00Speaker 2: the eighth inning. Beyond that, it was kind of a slider,
- 2:03Speaker 2: but the primary pitch to me was the sinker and
- 2:06Speaker 2: the split finger were kind of the main weapons today.
- 2:11Speaker 2: It just is to me a little bit curious because
- 2:13Speaker 2: those other two pitches for steamer and curveball were such weapons,
- 2:17Speaker 2: and I don't know if he's lost the feel or
- 2:19Speaker 2: where they've gone. The arm angle looked a little lower,
- 2:22Speaker 2: not certain. At one point it looked like he was
- 2:24Speaker 2: kind of shaking out his arm a little bit. I
- 2:27Speaker 2: was hesitant, but you know, I did see something that
- 2:30Speaker 2: looked like that, and the velocity was down, the command
- 2:33Speaker 2: was a little bit worse, and at the end of
- 2:37Speaker 2: the day he's still pitched a fantastic game and almost
- 2:40Speaker 2: made it through eight full innings. He at the end there,
- 2:43Speaker 2: it looked like Kurt wanted to kind of, you know,
- 2:45Speaker 2: do one of those manager moves. Ron Washington did a
- 2:49Speaker 2: lot of those where you'd go out not take him out. Unfortunately,
- 2:52Speaker 2: the next guy got a hit, another one that challenged
- 2:56Speaker 2: and didn't go the angel's way. He was safe, and
- 2:59Speaker 2: then Kurt looked like it was kind of muttering on
- 3:00Speaker 2: his way out afterwards, which is understandable. I don't know
- 3:04Speaker 2: who if he thought that just the situation as a whole,
- 3:07Speaker 2: or I think he was really pulling for his guy
- 3:09Speaker 2: to make it through and kind of give you a
- 3:11Speaker 2: nice boost of confidence. Nevertheless, a very nice game. The
- 3:16Speaker 2: Blue Jays offense was stymying. They didn't really get anything
- 3:19Speaker 2: going at all.
- 3:21Speaker 1: Was the arm shake That little wiggle is at the
- 3:23Speaker 1: tail when a guy might be hurt, and is that
- 3:26Speaker 1: where you start to worry a little bit.
- 3:28Speaker 2: I think it's the sum total we've been talking about
- 3:32Speaker 2: things not looking quite right. Can't quite put your finger
- 3:34Speaker 2: on it. He said, he's fine after the neck and
- 3:37Speaker 2: then what to me, the biggest thing is the stuff
- 3:40Speaker 2: looks different. Doesn't mean that stuff isn't good. It just
- 3:43Speaker 2: looks different. And I don't know why one would deviate
- 3:46Speaker 2: off of the starts earlier on in the year.
- 3:50Speaker 3: No, it is not.
- 3:51Speaker 2: Fair to expect those results. But the stuff itself fundamentally
- 3:55Speaker 2: does not look the same, and that might be a
- 3:57Speaker 2: strategic thing. Maybe those other pitches that are a little
- 4:01Speaker 2: newer or harder on the arm. I'm not sure. Never
- 4:04Speaker 2: you know, he had a great game, so I don't know.
- 4:07Speaker 2: We'll just keep an eye on it. But maybe he'll
- 4:10Speaker 2: make some comments and give some insights into what he's thinking.
- 4:14Speaker 1: Yeah, after that first he retired twenty straight batters before
- 4:18Speaker 1: him in his infield single on that eighth inning, and
- 4:20Speaker 1: he needed only seventy eight pitches over the next six
- 4:24Speaker 1: and two third inning, So very efficient from that point on,
- 4:28Speaker 1: and what turned out to be a six to one
- 4:30Speaker 1: Angels win did leave with the bases loaded. Sam Bachman
- 4:34Speaker 1: came in to retire Vladdi Guerrera Junior with the bases
- 4:38Speaker 1: loaded and Vladdi did represent the tying run in that situation,
- 4:42Speaker 1: so another good outing from him and Ryan Zephyr John
- 4:46Speaker 1: came in to finish up. Did you notice any sequencing
- 4:49Speaker 1: changes or any major changes with story from that second
- 4:52Speaker 1: ending on that allowed him to sort of cruise the
- 4:54Speaker 1: rest of the afternoon.
- 4:57Speaker 2: I think his command improved, that he was pounding the
- 4:59Speaker 2: strike zone better, and it seemed like they They're a
- 5:03Speaker 2: team that doesn't hit a lot of balls in the air,
- 5:06Speaker 2: although actually today Teodosio got quite a few. That might
- 5:10Speaker 2: be another thing that you keep an eye on. Sinker ball,
- 5:13Speaker 2: heavy pitcher getting more fly balls than Yeah, so I
- 5:21Speaker 2: it's strange. I believe the Blue Jays. What I do
- 5:24Speaker 2: know is they have well above average to excellent scouting.
- 5:27Speaker 2: I'm sure they would say excellent. I've seen a little
- 5:31Speaker 2: bit of it. I have a friend that does their
- 5:32Speaker 2: broadcast and and it's they analytics to the max. So
- 5:38Speaker 2: I think that they what I saw from them. They
- 5:42Speaker 2: won two out of three that first night, they only
- 5:44Speaker 2: got three hits and managed to secure that victory a
- 5:47Speaker 2: route in the second game, and then this game they
- 5:50Speaker 2: were in a very good position until they put Eric
- 5:54Speaker 2: lower in who to me looks like a DFA immediately.
- 5:59Speaker 2: It's not a dig on the Angels offense. That stuff
- 6:02Speaker 2: just isn't going to cut it. He's giving up a
- 6:03Speaker 2: home run one every three point two winnings, which is
- 6:07Speaker 2: a massive amount unsustainable at the big league levels. So
- 6:11Speaker 2: credit to the Angels offense for taking advantage of, you know,
- 6:15Speaker 2: kind of a weak link in the Blue Jays. But
- 6:18Speaker 2: they had they kept the writings in, I'm not sure
- 6:20Speaker 2: what would have happened. It seems like right handed pitching
- 6:22Speaker 2: right now has been much tougher for the Angels now.
- 6:26Speaker 1: Surya's overall fastball velow for the entire game was down
- 6:30Speaker 1: one mile an hour on both the four seamer and sinker.
- 6:34Speaker 1: Any reason for concern there is that just sort of
- 6:36Speaker 1: a natural, you know, fatigue factor setting in. He's had
- 6:40Speaker 1: a pretty heavy workload and we're just you know a
- 6:42Speaker 1: little over a month end of the season.
- 6:46Speaker 2: I think you probably answered the question there. It's still
- 6:49Speaker 2: more than enough velocity. I'm the last person that gives
- 6:53Speaker 2: a rats about lighting up the gun.
- 6:55Speaker 3: How about outs? I like outs.
- 6:57Speaker 2: I like command and outs, and if you are able
- 7:00Speaker 2: to do you know, the command part and you have
- 7:03Speaker 2: the premium heat. That's great. You just have the premium
- 7:06Speaker 2: heat and poor command. We know what that looks like.
- 7:09Speaker 2: So credit to Sorry for not only a good start,
- 7:14Speaker 2: but eating a lot of innings and saving that bullpen.
- 7:16Speaker 2: Because the Guardians are coming up next and they have
- 7:18Speaker 2: a competitive club yet again, I wonder.
- 7:22Speaker 1: I think Story's next start will be against the Dodgers
- 7:24Speaker 1: at home on Friday, unless they they I think they
- 7:28Speaker 1: have an off day on Thursday. It'll be interesting to
- 7:30Speaker 1: see if Kurt and the gang decide to use that
- 7:34Speaker 1: off day to skip a fifth starter. We're still not
- 7:37Speaker 1: quite sure who that fifth starter is going to be
- 7:39Speaker 1: at this point. I think Grayson Rodriguez was scheduled to pitch,
- 7:44Speaker 1: and Alec Manau is still down there in the bullpen,
- 7:46Speaker 1: so we're still not sure what they're going to do
- 7:48Speaker 1: with the Coakoos. Rian Johnson, another potential option, has apparently
- 7:54Speaker 1: pitched every triple A.
- 7:56Speaker 3: Yeah he's so. Yeah. It'll be interesting to see what happens.
- 7:59Speaker 1: And we're gonna take a quick break for a word
- 8:01Speaker 1: from our sponsors and we'll be right back the more

- 8:24Speaker 5: I'm good at two things, cookie is one of them,
- 8:26Speaker 5: but not trying to choose what we're gonna have. I've

- 9:09Speaker 1: Hey, welcome back to Halo territory with Mike Di Giovanna
- 9:12Speaker 1: and Mark Trumbo and our other big storyline off Sunday's
- 9:16Speaker 1: game was provided by Joe Adell. Joe entered Sunday with
- 9:20Speaker 1: a two sixty one average, six sixty ops, four homers
- 9:24Speaker 1: and twenty one RBIs and forty games far off is
- 9:28Speaker 1: seven seventy eight ops, thirty seven homer ninety eight RBI
- 9:32Speaker 1: pace of twenty twenty five. Then he goes opposite field
- 9:36Speaker 1: for a solo homer in the sixth inning and blast
- 9:40Speaker 1: a four hundred and forty nine foot homer that left
- 9:43Speaker 1: his bad at one hundred and fourteen point five miles
- 9:46Speaker 1: an hour to left center in the night mark, what
- 9:49Speaker 1: did you see in Joe swings today? And is this
- 9:52Speaker 1: the guy who's ready to bust out?
- 9:55Speaker 3: Great game for Joe Adell.
- 9:57Speaker 2: He's been grinding away, he's been getting his hits actually
- 10:00Speaker 2: recently some good at bats. Line drives, extra velocity, and
- 10:05Speaker 2: today he was able to get the launch angle. But
- 10:12Speaker 2: he was he got underneath some of those balls underneath
- 10:16Speaker 2: it is not correct. He drove them and they were
- 10:19Speaker 2: properly hit opposite field. One was very impressive, and then
- 10:24Speaker 2: a mammoth shot after that, so I think he has
- 10:28Speaker 2: done a lot of things really well. The ops is
- 10:30Speaker 2: going to climb with these extra base hits.
- 10:33Speaker 3: He had.
- 10:35Speaker 2: Some doubles as well, so the signs are all pointing
- 10:38Speaker 2: to him starting to really heat up. And I think
- 10:40Speaker 2: that if that happens, this team gets a whole lot
- 10:43Speaker 2: better in short order. Yeah, it was interesting.
- 10:45Speaker 1: His average is actually up quite a bit, so he's
- 10:49Speaker 1: making better contact his strikeouts. I think we're a little down,
- 10:53Speaker 1: but the power numbers were surprisingly low. And Joe said
- 10:56Speaker 1: he's been getting pitched a little differently this season. And
- 11:00Speaker 1: Fletcher the Orange County Register wrote a fine story on
- 11:02Speaker 1: him going into that Toronto series, where Adele mentioned how
- 11:07Speaker 1: differently the league was pitching against him this year. Adele
- 11:12Speaker 1: got hot last season when he went to a more
- 11:13Speaker 1: aggressive approach, especially early in the count. Adele hit seventeen homers,
- 11:17Speaker 1: almost half his total on the first pitch. This year,
- 11:21Speaker 1: Adele said pitchers are treating him differently. Quote last year,
- 11:25Speaker 1: I was getting pitches this time of year that I
- 11:27Speaker 1: haven't seen as much. Adele said. Their game plan has
- 11:30Speaker 1: changed a lot of backwards pitching off speed early in
- 11:33Speaker 1: fastballs later in the count at different parts of his own,
- 11:36Speaker 1: But that's as I figured, so nothing surprised me. Mark
- 11:41Speaker 1: is a former slugger. I know, like your rookie year,
- 11:44Speaker 1: you were runner up to Rookie of the Year. What
- 11:47Speaker 1: do sluggers do? And they know they can identify some
- 11:51Speaker 1: of the holes and they start making the adjustments against you.
- 11:55Speaker 3: You always hear this in the game. You know when
- 11:57Speaker 3: they make.
- 11:57Speaker 1: Adjustments, we have to adjust back. Was Joe a little
- 12:01Speaker 1: slow maybe earlier this year and making whatever adjustments he
- 12:03Speaker 1: needed to make, and what are those adjustments?
- 12:07Speaker 2: Welcome to hitting in the middle of the order, yet too,
- 12:11Speaker 2: You're not going to get anybody that throws the Los
- 12:15Speaker 2: Angeles Angels first pitch fastball Cookies. Hasn't done a good
- 12:19Speaker 2: job of scouting, There's no doubt about it. Zach Netto
- 12:23Speaker 2: had three at bats today where he first pitch contact
- 12:28Speaker 2: two pitches were well off the plate. He did hit
- 12:31Speaker 2: a double down the line on one of those bats,
- 12:33Speaker 2: and most people's in Joe included production on the first
- 12:37Speaker 2: pitch is going to be quite good, not always, but usually.
- 12:40Speaker 2: But you don't want to see our guys swinging at
- 12:42Speaker 2: bad pitches out of the strike zone without you know,
- 12:46Speaker 2: seeing any pitches beyond that making it out, especially a
- 12:49Speaker 2: pop up or something that has very little chance to
- 12:52Speaker 2: be successful. I think for Joe a lot of homer
- 12:56Speaker 2: you know, was the thirty seven home runs last year. Yeah,
- 13:00Speaker 2: the secrets out, so pitchers aren't going to do you
- 13:04Speaker 2: any favors. He has done a better job. There is
- 13:08Speaker 2: some tendency still to chase some of those sliders down
- 13:12Speaker 2: in a way, but that goes for a lot of people.
- 13:15Speaker 3: Yes, I think that.
- 13:17Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that Joe just needs to do what
- 13:20Speaker 2: every good hitter that I've played with does is hunt
- 13:23Speaker 2: mistakes in the middle of the plate. Doesn't necessarily have
- 13:25Speaker 2: to be a fastball, but really doing what he can
- 13:30Speaker 2: to eliminate some of those pitches that are just wildly
- 13:33Speaker 2: out of the zone that at times he it's not
- 13:36Speaker 2: auto swing, but I don't really know that the approach
- 13:39Speaker 2: can waiver a little bit. He just needs to be
- 13:42Speaker 2: very hard headed. Hunt middle end is what I think
- 13:45Speaker 2: he does an excellent job with the way is not
- 13:47Speaker 2: his strength, so middle middle end and if he gets
- 13:50Speaker 2: it in that spot, you know, put an aggressive swing
- 13:52Speaker 2: on it. I think he's matured, has what appears to
- 13:55Speaker 2: be a much better idea kind of with two strikes,
- 13:57Speaker 2: he's not taking those swing is where they quarkscrew into
- 14:01Speaker 2: the ground off balance. I see a lot of those
- 14:03Speaker 2: and two strike counts around baseball, and I hate it.
- 14:05Speaker 2: So Joe is doing a better job. He looks like
- 14:09Speaker 2: a more professional header to me.
- 14:11Speaker 1: When you talk about hunting pitches for a hitter in
- 14:14Speaker 1: the big leagues, is it mostly hunting fastballs or can
- 14:17Speaker 1: you hunt a you know, if they're throwing Joe off speed?
- 14:21Speaker 1: And I know, God if Mike Trout rarely swings at
- 14:23Speaker 1: the first pitch, but we know whereas nitra zone is
- 14:25Speaker 1: those sliders down on the zone. If he hunts a
- 14:29Speaker 1: slider down on the zone on first pitch, If Joe
- 14:31Speaker 1: Adoe hunts a slider middle ind is it just as
- 14:34Speaker 1: easy to hunt on an off speed or is it
- 14:36Speaker 1: more effective hunting against fast balls.
- 14:40Speaker 2: The guys that have hunted, we're going to use that
- 14:44Speaker 2: the best, in my experience, are the guys that.
- 14:49Speaker 3: Drive the real.
- 14:50Speaker 2: Nice cars and make a whole lot of money.
- 14:53Speaker 3: It is.
- 14:53Speaker 2: What I'm trying to say is it's very tough, and
- 14:56Speaker 2: I don't think most hitters benefit by hunting off speed pitches.
- 15:00Speaker 2: The majority of him if we're talking about a garbage
- 15:06Speaker 2: rolling breaking ball to steal a strike. That's that is
- 15:09Speaker 2: That is when I think it does pay off. If
- 15:11Speaker 2: a guy you properly scouted him, you've had enough at
- 15:14Speaker 2: bats and you know he's liable just to try and
- 15:16Speaker 2: steal a strike with a nothing little wrinkle, go ahead
- 15:20Speaker 2: and belt that one. But if it's a guy with
- 15:23Speaker 2: a you know, average to above average, you know offering,
- 15:27Speaker 2: especially a guy that throws strike to ball, you know,
- 15:31Speaker 2: breaking balls a lot, there's no reason to go up
- 15:33Speaker 2: there because you're liable to probably swing at something that
- 15:36Speaker 2: may look good to begin with and end up not
- 15:38Speaker 2: so good. So I think staying on the fastball at
- 15:41Speaker 2: all times is probably the best approach.
- 15:43Speaker 1: Let's talk a little bit more about Mike Trout. His
- 15:45Speaker 1: overall numbers are still pretty good forty eight with a
- 15:49Speaker 1: nine to thirty two ops, eleven homers, twenty three walks,
- 15:52Speaker 1: thirty three runs, and forty games, but he has only
- 15:56Speaker 1: two homers and one double and three RBIs in his
- 15:59Speaker 1: last twelve games. Mark, are you seeing something with his swing,
- 16:03Speaker 1: or his approach or his timing that looks a little off?
- 16:08Speaker 2: I sent a picture to you with text that I
- 16:11Speaker 2: think that we're going to be able to put up
- 16:12Speaker 2: here at some point. Yeah, and this is just my opinion,
- 16:16Speaker 2: so that's what it is. But it was always what
- 16:20Speaker 2: I was always taught, and I do kind of well.
- 16:22Speaker 3: I do agree with it.
- 16:23Speaker 2: When the picture breaks his hands the hitters, especially if
- 16:27Speaker 2: you're someone who has a leg kick of any you know, proportion,
- 16:31Speaker 2: you should be kind of getting going. And if you
- 16:34Speaker 2: have a toe tap even earlier, possibly Prince Fielder for example,
- 16:38Speaker 2: that it did an excellent job maintaining that with a
- 16:40Speaker 2: toe tap late kickwise, David Ortiz, many others. But you
- 16:44Speaker 2: have to get your you know, you have to get
- 16:47Speaker 2: it up in the early right now, Mike, it looks
- 16:50Speaker 2: like he's late.
- 16:50Speaker 3: That picture.
- 16:51Speaker 2: To me, he kind of stood out, So I was
- 16:53Speaker 2: wondering that was that pitch was a strikeout on kind
- 16:56Speaker 2: of a breaking ball that wasn't really all that nasty,
- 16:59Speaker 2: and I kind of went back and was like, well,
- 17:01Speaker 2: what kind of happened there? And then, as I've said before,
- 17:05Speaker 2: I saw him looking at video with Brady later in
- 17:07Speaker 2: the game, and where I would start and end with
- 17:09Speaker 2: the video is right there. I think that that tells me,
- 17:13Speaker 2: you know, you're just not quite getting ready on time.
- 17:16Speaker 2: It's something he can fix immediately in theory, so not
- 17:20Speaker 2: that big a deal, but it's something he's kind of
- 17:22Speaker 2: battled the last few years.
- 17:26Speaker 1: Now it's time for Daily Dingers presented by FanDuel. Well
- 17:36Speaker 1: Mark Jodell hit two homers in Sunday's game against Toronto.
- 17:40Speaker 3: I got a hunt.
- 17:41Speaker 1: She might be a pretty good Daily Dinger pick for
- 17:44Speaker 1: this Cleveland series this week.

- 17:47Speaker 2: Going to be facing two of three starting pitchers that
- 17:51Speaker 2: are left handed and two mammoth blasts in Sunday's game
- 17:56Speaker 2: against the Blue Jays makes a lot of sense. Joe

- 18:58Speaker 1: And welcome back to Halo territory. We're going to turn
- 19:00Speaker 1: our attention to the bench and two guys who made
- 19:03Speaker 1: some pretty big contribution Sunday. Oswald Peerrazza had another big hit,
- 19:08Speaker 1: a two run homer that turned a one to zero
- 19:09Speaker 1: deficit into a two to one lead in the fifth inning,
- 19:12Speaker 1: and von Grissom capped the form run rally in that
- 19:16Speaker 1: fifth with a two out, two run double to right
- 19:18Speaker 1: center field. Now we're probably going to see more of
- 19:21Speaker 1: these two. I think there's a spatal left handers in
- 19:24Speaker 1: addition to the Cleveland series. I think the Dodgers will
- 19:26Speaker 1: start a few lefties against them this week. But Mark,
- 19:30Speaker 1: regardless of the hand the pitcher throws with, would you
- 19:33Speaker 1: like to see one, if not two, of these guys.
- 19:36Speaker 3: In the lineup A little more often.
- 19:39Speaker 2: Absolutely. I see the fans are echoing that yeah a
- 19:43Speaker 2: lot on the social media post. It's quite obvious to
- 19:46Speaker 2: me they are playing really well. I don't wow that
- 19:51Speaker 2: You've had a really good point about trying to go
- 19:54Speaker 2: right left, right left, and if you have the luxury
- 19:57Speaker 2: to do it. Some teams do an opponent coming up,
- 20:00Speaker 2: not the guardians the next one. They have the guys
- 20:03Speaker 2: to do it. It's one thing to copy, but copying
- 20:09Speaker 2: is best done when when you can approximate. And I
- 20:12Speaker 2: don't think right now that it makes sense to do that.
- 20:16Speaker 2: I think you play the guys that are performing the best.
- 20:19Speaker 2: There's nothing that says that the guys that may see
- 20:23Speaker 2: a little less playing time shouldn't be seeing less playing time.
- 20:27Speaker 2: I think that Paraza another great defensive stop to save
- 20:30Speaker 2: or run on that that last play with Soriano also
- 20:33Speaker 2: hit a big home run. I mean, why, why would
- 20:37Speaker 2: why would he not be in there every day?
- 20:39Speaker 3: Is my question to you.
- 20:41Speaker 1: I don't I agree with you. I guess another question
- 20:45Speaker 1: is would you put him in every day over yan
- 20:48Speaker 1: Mancotta third base?
- 20:50Speaker 5: Yes?
- 20:51Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, I would too.
- 20:53Speaker 1: I think Paraza right now is probably your most consistent
- 20:57Speaker 1: effective hitter maybe on the team, uh, and you got
- 21:02Speaker 1: to get us a bat in the lineup. And its defensively,
- 21:04Speaker 1: he's shown a pretty pretty solid glove at both third
- 21:08Speaker 1: and second base.
- 21:10Speaker 3: I just don't know why.
- 21:12Speaker 1: I don't know if it's a physical thing, whether they
- 21:14Speaker 1: think they might be exposing him a little too much,
- 21:15Speaker 1: if they play him too much.
- 21:17Speaker 3: You never know.
- 21:18Speaker 1: But he's still a pretty young guy. I would have
- 21:20Speaker 1: him in there every day as well. How about Grissom?
- 21:24Speaker 1: Not as uh not as good defensively in the field
- 21:29Speaker 1: is Paraza, But boy, you know, Josh Lowe is really
- 21:32Speaker 1: scuffling out there in left field.
- 21:34Speaker 3: You could, I don't, I don't know what.
- 21:37Speaker 1: You can't really move Grissom or Paraza out to the outfield.
- 21:40Speaker 1: There's there's something wrong. There's something wrong with this lineup,
- 21:43Speaker 1: you know, with with with low getting so many starts
- 21:46Speaker 1: against right handed pitchers, and Paraza is not getting in
- 21:50Speaker 1: there enough. In Moncatta that you Moncatta seems to be
- 21:53Speaker 1: a real streaky hitter, and I'd rather go with the
- 21:56Speaker 1: guy who's a lot more consistent like Paraza. Is there
- 21:59Speaker 1: any I don't think there's any easy fix to this lineup,
- 22:02Speaker 1: But these pieces don't seem to fit very well together.
- 22:05Speaker 1: Is anything you would suggest to Kurt Suzuki that he'd
- 22:08Speaker 1: do at this point?
- 22:10Speaker 2: Play the best players, play the hottest players, and you
- 22:13Speaker 2: know what, they may not remain the hottest players. I
- 22:17Speaker 2: think Praza indicated he made some changes with his swing
- 22:21Speaker 2: and he's not the same player that he was last year.
- 22:23Speaker 2: And I'm the first one to admit I didn't think
- 22:26Speaker 2: much of him last year. I didn't see anything that
- 22:28Speaker 2: really stood out. Looked like a utility backup infielder. No
- 22:32Speaker 2: pop in the bat and the defense. I didn't get
- 22:36Speaker 2: a good enough look. And maybe that's on me because
- 22:39Speaker 2: he's a well above average I'd say almost a fantastic defender.
- 22:44Speaker 2: I mean, he really does a lot of things. I
- 22:47Speaker 2: have to assume he plays a nice shortstop too, if
- 22:50Speaker 2: they ever plan on giving Zach Netto a blow, but
- 22:54Speaker 2: that maybe one sixty two.
- 22:56Speaker 3: Yeah, never know.
- 22:58Speaker 1: Well, it wasn't all rainbowsen butterflies in Toronto.
- 23:01Speaker 3: As we know. The Angels had no.
- 23:03Speaker 1: Answers again for Dylan Cees Friday night and a two
- 23:08Speaker 1: nothing loss, and they were blown out fourteen to one
- 23:10Speaker 1: on Saturday. Saturday was a weird game. You know, the
- 23:14Speaker 1: Angels were right in it early, they failed to cash
- 23:16Speaker 1: in on some opportunities. They put two on with no
- 23:19Speaker 1: outs in the third inning, loaded the bases with one
- 23:21Speaker 1: out in the fourth, failed to score both times. Then
- 23:25Speaker 1: they give up a seventh spot in the fifth that
- 23:27Speaker 1: featured a throwing area by Jack Kohanowitz, and a lot
- 23:32Speaker 1: of frustration went into that inning. And then they end
- 23:35Speaker 1: the game with a position player Adam Frazier on the mound,
- 23:38Speaker 1: gives up another four in the eighth. Mark Sunday definitely
- 23:42Speaker 1: took the edge. I think off those two games with
- 23:45Speaker 1: any particular thoughts on those first two games, just you know,
- 23:50Speaker 1: losing two out of three isn't going to cut it.
- 23:52Speaker 1: It's great that they won Sunday, it's great that you
- 23:56Speaker 1: know they have something to celebrate and get excited about.
- 23:58Speaker 1: But bottom up, they did lose two out of three
- 24:01Speaker 1: to two. Granted to a pretty good team, but that's
- 24:04Speaker 1: not how you build a playoff contender or even a
- 24:06Speaker 1: five hundred team.
- 24:07Speaker 2: At this point, doing what we do is so time
- 24:12Speaker 2: sensitive that covering postgame Sunday everything looks a little bit better.
- 24:18Speaker 2: In reality, your ace just took on a guy that
- 24:22Speaker 2: probably is packing his bags for somewhere else and.
- 24:28Speaker 3: Good for them.
- 24:29Speaker 1: Now.
- 24:29Speaker 2: The other two games Friday night, Reid Detmers didn't have
- 24:33Speaker 2: any command.
- 24:34Speaker 3: I believe he walked six. Yeah, that was very strange.
- 24:38Speaker 2: Kurt credited the Blue Jays keen plate discipline, said he
- 24:43Speaker 2: thought Reid looked pretty good to some degree. I think
- 24:48Speaker 2: you're getting the point. I didn't think he had a
- 24:51Speaker 2: really very good start. It wasn't the worst either, it
- 24:55Speaker 2: was just a little bit. Yeah, that is a team
- 24:56Speaker 2: that does an excellent job. I know for a fact
- 24:59Speaker 2: that they're they for a few years now have have
- 25:02Speaker 2: hammered on plate discipline, and they get daily reports after
- 25:06Speaker 2: every game on you know, their ability to control the
- 25:10Speaker 2: strike zone. So it's no surprise that they actually do that.
- 25:12Speaker 2: So but you know, the Blue Jays on the offensive
- 25:16Speaker 2: side in that first game got three hits, they managed
- 25:18Speaker 2: to win. So that was that Saturday's game. Jack didn't
- 25:22Speaker 2: have it going. His comments reflected that he seemed more
- 25:25Speaker 2: in line with what I saw. There was a lot
- 25:27Speaker 2: of traffic on the bases and that that one play,
- 25:30Speaker 2: in particular, the throwing error, it seemed strange. I don't
- 25:35Speaker 2: know if he didn't know how many outs there were
- 25:37Speaker 2: there were first second and here I rewounded and I
- 25:41Speaker 2: recorded there was more than enough time to throw a second.
- 25:44Speaker 3: He didn't do that.
- 25:45Speaker 2: It looked like he kind of had a brain whatever,
- 25:49Speaker 2: and then hucked ninety mile an hour sticker up the
- 25:53Speaker 2: first baseline. It just looked like a frustrated play and
- 25:57Speaker 2: the game had sped up and maybe some of the
- 25:59Speaker 2: some of the motions had taken over. I credited him
- 26:02Speaker 2: for being accountable and you know, saying what he did.
- 26:05Speaker 2: As far as the Angels offense those two games not
- 26:08Speaker 2: getting the job done manufacturer in the runs, a number
- 26:12Speaker 2: of guys stranded. How about Addison barger Strow. What'd you
- 26:15Speaker 2: think of that?
- 26:16Speaker 1: That was a rocket. That was a They measured it
- 26:21Speaker 1: close to one hundred miles an hour. I can't remember
- 26:23Speaker 1: the specific over number it was over Wow, I thought
- 26:27Speaker 1: ninety five plus was like a lead arm. That's amazing.
- 26:30Speaker 1: You know, we saw him make some great defensive plays
- 26:32Speaker 1: against the Dodgers in the World Series last year. Can't
- 26:35Speaker 1: say I was shocked to me it was an even
- 26:38Speaker 1: better play by that catcher. You know, it was a
- 26:40Speaker 1: missile from right field gets kind of an in between hop.
- 26:44Speaker 1: That's pretty high. He gloved it probably shoulder length if
- 26:47Speaker 1: not higher. Somehow managed to get the tag on so Laire,
- 26:51Speaker 1: who I'm not sure had the most effective slide into
- 26:54Speaker 1: home plate, but a guy I'm not expecting to die,
- 26:57Speaker 1: he probably would have called it.
- 27:01Speaker 2: Solare got on. I believe that in with a double. Now,
- 27:04Speaker 2: the double was interesting because he smacked it was nothing
- 27:07Speaker 2: breaking ball, but it was one of those that most
- 27:10Speaker 2: guys would probably be on third base, Karen dat it came,
- 27:13Speaker 2: you know, got over Barso's head and Jorge second base.
- 27:18Speaker 2: The next hitter, I think it was Boncata. Now he
- 27:21Speaker 2: hit it very hard, and he also hit it to Barger.
- 27:23Speaker 2: But another time that the Angels conservatively held the runner
- 27:26Speaker 2: at third and so now you you know, are forced
- 27:30Speaker 2: to drive him in. Barge is probably the only right
- 27:32Speaker 2: fielder in baseball it has the ability to do that,
- 27:35Speaker 2: because that was closer to deep right field than not.
- 27:37Speaker 2: But it just kind of goes to show that today
- 27:41Speaker 2: they ended up breaking and breaking out, but an inability
- 27:45Speaker 2: to get the runner over I think, and get the
- 27:47Speaker 2: runner in. So if again, you know, how why did
- 27:51Speaker 2: they win today? What did they do?
- 27:53Speaker 3: They payed a home run and the home run the
- 27:56Speaker 3: home run.
- 27:57Speaker 2: So when they hit multiple home runs, I believe one
- 28:01Speaker 2: of our first episodes, I said it. I still believe
- 28:04Speaker 2: it multiple home runs, the Angels will win a lot
- 28:06Speaker 2: of those games.
- 28:07Speaker 3: If not, you know it's going to be mixed.
- 28:10Speaker 1: We're going to close the show with a little I
- 28:13Speaker 1: don't know what's breaking news, but Mark found this on
- 28:15Speaker 1: the Worldwide Interweb today. The Angels are dropping the price
- 28:21Speaker 1: of their streaming package the rest of the season.
- 28:24Speaker 3: What is it to eighty nine dollars? Is that what
- 28:26Speaker 3: you understand?
- 28:27Speaker 4: Mark?
- 28:29Speaker 2: Mark saw it. I believe that most people may have
- 28:32Speaker 2: sawt if you are on any social media's But yeah,
- 28:37Speaker 2: I did see it. I did tell you in case
- 28:40Speaker 2: you were somebody who hadn't yet subscribed to ABTV.
- 28:44Speaker 1: Well, I get it on direct TV, so I don't
- 28:47Speaker 1: have to subscribe. But now, I don't know what your
- 28:49Speaker 1: math grades were like in high school, but its like
- 28:53Speaker 1: maybe eighty nine dollars when you pro rate, that still
- 28:57Speaker 1: seems a little high. We're what forty games end of
- 28:59Speaker 1: the season right now? What would your rate be is
- 29:02Speaker 1: right now? If you're trying to lure a season viewing
- 29:06Speaker 1: package from Angel fans who are pretty much I rate.
- 29:11Speaker 2: The best baseball is yet to come, no.
- 29:13Speaker 3: Doubt about that.
- 29:15Speaker 1: Yeah, we addressed that on our last episode over the weekend,
- 29:18Speaker 1: in case you missed it, Mark, Mark couldn't join us
- 29:20Speaker 1: for that episode about general manager perraman Asian, but feel
- 29:25Speaker 1: free to go back and give it a wash. We
- 29:27Speaker 1: had a good time with it. It was very informative.
- 29:29Speaker 1: Hopefully someone had the.
- 29:31Speaker 2: Professionals in the room. Mark could have done there. But
- 29:34Speaker 2: you know, two guys that wrote timely articles probably made
- 29:38Speaker 2: more sense than the ex angel slugger as far as
- 29:43Speaker 2: you know. The nuanced coverage of the general managers mixed results.
- 29:47Speaker 2: But he seems optimistic and maybe today is an example
- 29:50Speaker 2: of it. Maybe this is the best pace you know.
- 29:52Speaker 1: So very very gracious of you to step aside and
- 29:57Speaker 1: let the professionals handle it.
- 29:58Speaker 4: Mark.
- 29:58Speaker 6: We're going to.
- 29:59Speaker 1: Close the show with thanks for watching. Everybody, Please like
- 30:02Speaker 1: and subscribe. We'll see you next time on Halo Territory.
