Transcript
- 0:18Speaker 1: Hey, Hurdler's Emily Abaudi year bringing you an installment of
- 0:22Speaker 1: five Minute Friday from Hurdle. On today's episode, I want
- 0:27Speaker 1: to talk a little bit about where my head was
- 0:29Speaker 1: at yesterday morning. Intriguing, I know, so picture this. It's
- 0:35Speaker 1: five fifty four am. Is it just me? Or do
- 0:39Speaker 1: you also just like happen to wake up five to
- 0:44Speaker 1: seven minutes before your morning alarm if you set one. Now.
- 0:47Speaker 1: I have not been setting an alarm frequently over the
- 0:50Speaker 1: past year, but I did have one set yesterday because
- 0:55Speaker 1: I had a nine to forty five am flight, and
- 0:58Speaker 1: I knew that I wanted to move my body before
- 1:02Speaker 1: the day ahead. I knew that if I was going
- 1:05Speaker 1: to be sitting on a plane, if I was going
- 1:07Speaker 1: to be stagnant, if I was going to feel a
- 1:08Speaker 1: little blah, that a great way to kick off the
- 1:13Speaker 1: day would be by getting in some movement. And so
- 1:18Speaker 1: I set my lump for six am. I roll over.
- 1:21Speaker 1: It's five point fifty four. Everything in the room looks blurry,
- 1:26Speaker 1: as it does at that time of day, and I
- 1:30Speaker 1: really didn't want to get up. I didn't want to
- 1:32Speaker 1: get up at all. I rolled over, I put my
- 1:35Speaker 1: feet on the ground, I walked straight to the kitchen closet,
- 1:39Speaker 1: where I happened to keep my sports bras. I don't
- 1:41Speaker 1: know if anyone thinks that's weird, you obviously have not
- 1:44Speaker 1: been in a New York City apartment. I grab my
- 1:47Speaker 1: sports bra I throw on some spandex, I put on
- 1:50Speaker 1: some socks, I put on some sneakers. I throw on
- 1:51Speaker 1: a sweatshirt, and before I know it, before I can
- 1:53Speaker 1: really second guess myself, I'm out the door, on my
- 1:56Speaker 1: way to the gym. I get to the gym, I
- 1:59Speaker 1: go to the locker room, I drop off my jacket.
- 2:01Speaker 1: I walk up to this treadmill in the corner that
- 2:02Speaker 1: I like to go to because not a lot of
- 2:04Speaker 1: people are anywhere near that vicinity, and it has its
- 2:07Speaker 1: own TV and its own remote, and it's just it's
- 2:10Speaker 1: my spot period. And I get on the treadmill and
- 2:14Speaker 1: I don't feel like running, but I start jogging, and
- 2:16Speaker 1: I do the warm up, and I know exactly what's
- 2:18Speaker 1: on deck, and by the second interval in a four
- 2:24Speaker 1: set workout, I finally feel capable, because until that moment
- 2:29Speaker 1: in the second interval, I was literally like, what am
- 2:31Speaker 1: I doing? Should I just go back home?
- 2:33Speaker 2: Then?
- 2:33Speaker 1: I start to have the next set of thoughts like,
- 2:35Speaker 1: I'm already here. This isn't as hard as I thought
- 2:38Speaker 1: it was going to be. Look, here we go. And
- 2:40Speaker 1: then by the second interval again I'm like, Okay, I'm
- 2:42Speaker 1: already halfway through, so now it's just downhill from here.
- 2:45Speaker 1: About twelve minutes later, after the second interval is done,
- 2:49Speaker 1: after the workout is done, I get off the treadmill,
- 2:53Speaker 1: I'm drenched in sweat, and I have that moment like
- 2:56Speaker 1: I do after every workout that I am hesitant to
- 3:00Speaker 1: do in the first place, where I'm like, I am
- 3:03Speaker 1: so proud of myself that I showed up. Granted, yesterday
- 3:09Speaker 1: was an early workout day, but it's not the only
- 3:12Speaker 1: time I felt this way lately. In fact, a lot
- 3:15Speaker 1: of the time lately, I feel like my motivation is dwindling,
- 3:18Speaker 1: especially with daylight savings. Staying in bed is tempting, taking
- 3:23Speaker 1: some time is tempting. And although I cannot preach enough
- 3:25Speaker 1: about listening to your body and taking the time when
- 3:28Speaker 1: you really feel like you need it, when you feel
- 3:31Speaker 1: like you just need a beat, cool take the time.
- 3:34Speaker 1: But for me, this week, three different days, I thought
- 3:38Speaker 1: to myself, I don't know if I want to do this,
- 3:41Speaker 1: And three different days I did it and I felt
- 3:45Speaker 1: better for it, And it was just a reminder for
- 3:48Speaker 1: me of something that I'm here to share with you,
- 3:50Speaker 1: which is that there's a really big difference between I
- 3:54Speaker 1: can't and I won't. Some days it feels like you can't,
- 3:59Speaker 1: but the reality is that you can, and in fact, again,
- 4:03Speaker 1: you'll be better for it on the days where you're
- 4:07Speaker 1: feeling hesitant, on the days where you're just not sure
- 4:11Speaker 1: how to deal. My biggest piece of advice is just
- 4:16Speaker 1: to start. Maybe it's with your workout, maybe it's with
- 4:20Speaker 1: a tough project, maybe it's a hard conversation that you
- 4:23Speaker 1: need to have with a friend. Oftentimes the stories that
- 4:26Speaker 1: we are telling ourselves, it's not really what's going on.
- 4:30Speaker 1: You are capable of doing the hard things, and for me,
- 4:34Speaker 1: that's an essential lesson that I was reminded of this
- 4:38Speaker 1: week prompt for you to take you into the weekend.
- 4:41Speaker 1: I asked a friend this earlier today, What is one
- 4:45Speaker 1: thing you can plan to do for yourself within the
- 4:48Speaker 1: next seventy two hours to be better in your body? Again,
- 4:53Speaker 1: what is one thing that you can do for yourself
- 4:56Speaker 1: over the next seventy two hours. Commit to it to
- 5:00Speaker 1: feel better in your body. Highlights of the week. Links
- 5:04Speaker 1: to all of this goodness are in the show notes.
- 5:07Speaker 1: First up, check out the new Peloton and Adidas collection.
- 5:11Speaker 1: I had the opportunity to sit down with hurdler Peloton
- 5:15Speaker 1: favorite Cody Rigsby this week. I wrote about our conversation
- 5:18Speaker 1: for Men's Health and we were chatting all about the
- 5:22Speaker 1: upcoming collaboration between Adidas and Peloton. It's launching March twenty fifth,
- 5:27Speaker 1: and selected these retailers on one peloton dot com and
- 5:31Speaker 1: in select Peloton showrooms and Rigsby, as well as past
- 5:36Speaker 1: hurdle favorites Ali Love and Robin Arzon collaborated with Adidas
- 5:41Speaker 1: for this super fun collection. It's got sizing from extra
- 5:45Speaker 1: small to two X. It's got women's and men's and
- 5:48Speaker 1: unisex options and includes everything from tanks and tights, shorts, hoodies, teas,
- 5:53Speaker 1: two crew, nex sports bros and joggers, all arranging between
- 5:57Speaker 1: thirty and eighty five dollars. It looks super cute. I'm
- 6:00Speaker 1: excited to get my hands on some of it. You
- 6:01Speaker 1: can read all about that in the link in the
- 6:05Speaker 1: show notes. Watch I'm a Sucker. Ginny and Georgia another
- 6:09Speaker 1: Netflix series to highlight for you this week. This one
- 6:13Speaker 1: about a mom named Georgia and her two kids, Ginny
- 6:16Speaker 1: and Austin. They move They're looking for a fresh start
- 6:19Speaker 1: as a family, but when you've got a lot of
- 6:21Speaker 1: skeletons in your closet, things can get a little bumpy.
- 6:25Speaker 1: Definitely recommend that you check this one out. Listen. This
- 6:29Speaker 1: is a Hurdler spotlight counter Programming with Shira and Ariel.
- 6:33Speaker 1: First of all, this is so creative, and if you
- 6:36Speaker 1: are listening to this and you have something cool coming
- 6:38Speaker 1: down the pipe that you want me to highlight in
- 6:40Speaker 1: a five minute Friday or in the weekly Hurdle newsletter
- 6:43Speaker 1: going forward, feel free to shoot me an email. It's
- 6:45Speaker 1: just Emily at Hurdle dot us. But with that said,
- 6:48Speaker 1: Shira Moskowitz is a hurdler we met when I was
- 6:51Speaker 1: working back at We Work a couple years ago. She
- 6:55Speaker 1: just launched the second season of her podcast, it's called
- 6:58Speaker 1: counter Programming. It's a comedy podcast that this is hilarious.
- 7:02Speaker 1: Discusses topics with the word count or counter in the title.
- 7:06Speaker 1: I Am serious. Expect a mix of historical context, fun facts,
- 7:11Speaker 1: and personal anecdotes. Give it a listen. Listen A first
- 7:14Speaker 1: timers guide to filing taxes Life Kit, You strike again.
- 7:19Speaker 1: I just you know what I love about Life Kit.
- 7:21Speaker 1: This is an MPR podcast. I've highlighted it a few
- 7:24Speaker 1: times on the show. They always come at me with
- 7:26Speaker 1: like the stuff that I need, right when I need it.
- 7:29Speaker 1: Of course, it's that time of year again, it's tax season.
- 7:32Speaker 1: Being a ten ninety nine employee, I for years now
- 7:34Speaker 1: have been working with an accountant because I think I
- 7:37Speaker 1: would drown if I tried to do all of this myself.
- 7:40Speaker 1: But if you are one of the brave ones doing
- 7:42Speaker 1: this on your own, this podcast episode from Lifekit is
- 7:45Speaker 1: super helpful. It breaks down the entire filing process and
- 7:49Speaker 1: tackles a lot of common COVID nineteen related tax questions
- 7:53Speaker 1: with a CPA new release to check out the Lululemon
- 7:58Speaker 1: Swift Speed Tight. I dms constantly asking me about my
- 8:02Speaker 1: favorite gear, what I am sweating in, what I'm working
- 8:05Speaker 1: out in. My favorite all time tight from Lula Lemon
- 8:09Speaker 1: is the all the right places tight. They have pretty
- 8:12Speaker 1: much stopped making it except in a cropped length, which
- 8:14Speaker 1: isn't my personal go to. However, it seems as though
- 8:18Speaker 1: they may be replacing it with this new edition again.
- 8:21Speaker 1: It's called the Swift Speed Tight and it's got the
- 8:24Speaker 1: same amount of pockets as the All the Right Places Tight,
- 8:27Speaker 1: which made the All the Right Places Tight one of
- 8:30Speaker 1: my favorites. And bonus the back one zippers. Now I
- 8:35Speaker 1: recently snagged a pair and ran in them for the
- 8:37Speaker 1: first time this week. Really loved the feeling. And one
- 8:41Speaker 1: other thing to highlight in these they are super high
- 8:44Speaker 1: wasted again. A link to grab those if you're interested,
- 8:47Speaker 1: is in the show notes. And lastly, donate support the
- 8:51Speaker 1: AAPI Community Fund. There has been, as many of us know,
- 8:57Speaker 1: a surge of violence against as in our country and
- 9:02Speaker 1: across the globe and it is absolutely devastating and heartbreaking.
- 9:06Speaker 1: And this week there was another shooting spree down in
- 9:10Speaker 1: Atlanta where eight people were killed, including six women of
- 9:14Speaker 1: Asian descent. Go Fundme put together this fund. All the
- 9:18Speaker 1: donations received through the fund will be granted to trusted
- 9:22Speaker 1: AAPI organizations working directify the racial inequalities in our society.
- 9:27Speaker 1: So if you can give, I highly encourage you to
- 9:31Speaker 1: do so. If you want to learn more about other
- 9:33Speaker 1: ways that you can support the Asian American community. Right now,
- 9:36Speaker 1: I'm also linking to a really great article that was
- 9:39Speaker 1: put out yesterday by GQ in the show notes. Now
- 9:44Speaker 1: a little segue into this week's listener question.
- 9:49Speaker 2: Hi Emily, my name is Caitlin. I just ran my
- 9:52Speaker 2: first virtual marathon last week, and I've been struggling with
- 9:56Speaker 2: the balance of recovery and also not wanting to take
- 9:59Speaker 2: a ton of time. I'm off and losing fitness, so
- 10:02Speaker 2: I was wondering if you have any tips for you know,
- 10:04Speaker 2: the first couple weeks after a marathon and how to
- 10:07Speaker 2: get back into the groove again. Love the podcast. Thank you, Caitlin. Congratulations,
- 10:14Speaker 2: this is so exciting. Virtual marathons are man whole other
- 10:19Speaker 2: level of mental toughness, so kudos to you. I can
- 10:23Speaker 2: totally understand an object in motion likes to stay in motion, right,
- 10:28Speaker 2: But here's the deal. You just accomplished something really big,
- 10:32Speaker 2: so I cannot encourage you enough to take some time
- 10:36Speaker 2: just to take a deep breath.
- 10:39Speaker 1: You earned it. Now. With that said, as someone who
- 10:42Speaker 1: can totally relate to this like is it time to
- 10:45Speaker 1: move again? Thing? For me post marathon, my go to
- 10:49Speaker 1: usually is about two to three weeks of literally like
- 10:52Speaker 1: lazying around, going for coffee in the morning, walking around
- 10:56Speaker 1: the block, not doing much of anything, although moving because
- 11:01Speaker 1: you don't want to get super stiff. It's going to
- 11:04Speaker 1: help your body recover if you do something like walking,
- 11:07Speaker 1: light cycling, that kind of thing. Then I would encourage
- 11:11Speaker 1: you to ask yourself, like, what is the next goal
- 11:14Speaker 1: that I want to go after? What is the next
- 11:16Speaker 1: thing that I want to focus on. Maybe it's time
- 11:19Speaker 1: to jump into a strength cycle. Maybe it's time to
- 11:21Speaker 1: get familiar with something that you haven't tried before, like
- 11:24Speaker 1: kettlebell work or yoga. You know, be mindful that you've
- 11:28Speaker 1: just put your body through a lot, So how can
- 11:31Speaker 1: you help yourself get stronger, build back up so that
- 11:35Speaker 1: you can get back into if running appens to be
- 11:38Speaker 1: it your chosen modality. And make sure you celebrate a
- 11:42Speaker 1: job well done. That is it for this week. Make
- 11:47Speaker 1: sure you're keeping up with Hurdle over on social media
- 11:50Speaker 1: at Hurdle Podcast. I'm over at Emily a Body, and
- 11:54Speaker 1: make sure to head on over to the show notes
- 11:56Speaker 1: to leave me a voice message. I want to answer
- 11:59Speaker 1: your question in an upcoming episode of Five Minute Friday.
- 12:03Speaker 1: Thanks y'all. Another hurdle conquered. Catch you guys next time.
