- 1:30I'm very happy to have him on the show.
- 1:32We are now talking to former New York Giants Super Bowl champion
- 1:36linebacker Gary Reasons. Gary, what's up, buddy?
- 1:40Man, oh man, I tell you. Is there enough air in that
- 1:43room? Are you breathing?
- 1:44OK, yeah, like I say, I love it. Sometimes I, I, you know, I get
- 1:48caught with phlegm down my throat.
- 1:49Yeah, I. Don't want to do that.
- 1:51No, all the production value man, this is great.
- 1:54This you guys put it together. Well, I will say this, we have a
- 1:57great bunch of guys on the back end, Fish, who you just saw
- 2:00during our sports minute, he's our executive producer.
- 2:04He works out with all the graphics.
- 2:05He puts everything together and we got the speeder over here who
- 2:08does all the video, the editing, all the the sound stuff.
- 2:12So we got a bunch of good guys doing the back end.
- 2:15And we have our board up guy, Tommy Boops working on the
- 2:17sound, making sure that the sound is clear and persistent.
- 2:21So Speaking of persistent, the NFL committee is not persistent.
- 2:27And I don't I don't know what the hell they're doing because
- 2:30Bill Belichick is a first ballot Hall of Famer.
- 2:32You were coached by him. You know a little bit about him.
- 2:35Actually, you know a lot about him.
- 2:37Why do you think the committee has decided to not put him in
- 2:41the Hall of Fame for the first time, where he's become
- 2:43available as a first ballot Hall of.
- 2:45Famer well, I think they basically dropped the ball here.
- 2:47There's no doubt about that because Bill definitely a
- 2:50deserve for for what he did for the game in the National
- 2:53Football League and his and his, his legacy of what he's put
- 2:57together as a head coach in the league.
- 3:00And then obviously with us as a defensive coordinator has been,
- 3:03you know, there there's no one that can match what Bill
- 3:06Belichick has done in the National Football League as a
- 3:09coach. And he deservedly should get in
- 3:11immediately as, as it's available to him.
- 3:14But I think there's some powers that be that wanted to wanted to
- 3:17kind of slap him on the wrist a little bit for for whatever
- 3:20reason, I don't I'm, I'm not going to go into all the all
- 3:22those issues, but I think that there was a little bit of of a
- 3:26little bit of a conspiracy, I would call it to to keep him out
- 3:30of there. Just to say that that he
- 3:32probably isn't bigger or as big or bigger than the league or
- 3:35bigger than the game. But you know, he did his part.
- 3:39I think that he had a tremendous career in the National Football
- 3:42League. It may not even be over,
- 3:44depending upon what happens with him in North Carolina.
- 3:47Who knows. But, but Bill definitely
- 3:50deserved to be in and I think it's just a little bit of game
- 3:52playing your gamesmanship and just trying to send some subtle
- 3:56messages, whatever they may be, to Bill and any others.
- 4:01I I just don't, I just don't like that kind of politics.
- 4:04So I wanted to know you being obviously a player that played
- 4:06with him, like how is he transitioned, like his style and
- 4:10his personality on and off the field for when you played.
- 4:12So obviously when he became a coach with the Patriots later on
- 4:14after you retired until to now because I know you do some
- 4:17college football broadcasting as well.
- 4:19Like, what do you think the transition of his, like, just
- 4:21football career has been like? You know, Bill has always been
- 4:24true to himself and really what he is, he's cut and dry,
- 4:27straight to the point. When he was coaching us, it was
- 4:30he presented us the information, gave us the coaching points that
- 4:34he had gleaned from from hours and hours and hours of film
- 4:37study and and that's still him today.
- 4:39I mean, that's what made him the most successful coach of all
- 4:42time. And that's his preparation.
- 4:45He the no one was going to outwork Bill.
- 4:47No one was going to put a a game plan together that that was
- 4:50superlative to his. And I think that and when he had
- 4:53a bunch of guys that could play and play well and he did it in a
- 4:55couple of spots. Now he he certainly, he
- 4:58certainly shine. And I, I, I don't think that
- 5:01there's any doubt that Bill Belichick is it was, it's a
- 5:04tremendous coach. And but you know, what you see
- 5:06is what you get. He hasn't changed.
- 5:09He hasn't changed from the day when when when he was with us
- 5:11and in East Rutherford for those many ball games and
- 5:14championships to what he's doing today in North.
- 5:16Carolina Gary, we had one of your old buddies on the show
- 5:19last week, Howard Cross and and we kind of went through some of
- 5:23the things that the Giants have done in the past.
- 5:25And Tom Coughlin was one guy that I thought they mistreated
- 5:28at the end of his career with the New York Giants.
- 5:31This is a guy that won two Super Bowl championships.
- 5:33You know him because he was a part of that staff, the Bill
- 5:36Parcells and Bill Belichick staff.
- 5:38What do you know about Tom Coughlin that other people don't
- 5:42know about him? He's an open book.
- 5:44I mean, there's not much about Tom Coughlin that you you need
- 5:47to have no otherwise you had a great collegiate career to the
- 5:51Giants was was tremendous as an assistant coach on Bill staff.
- 5:57And he he worked as though, you know, everything was was perfect
- 6:02and he demanded that of his of his of his group, the running
- 6:05backs. Obviously with that he worked
- 6:07with and I think that, you know, with us when he was in in that
- 6:11mode, he really, you know, just shine in what he did.
- 6:15Parcells gave his coaches their lanes to swim in, so to speak.
- 6:18OK, They didn't, most of them didn't jump across across the
- 6:22lanes to try to, you know, out guess the the other the other
- 6:25coaches or really out guess Parcells at that point.
- 6:28So it was all kind of a bill on top and everybody else is kind
- 6:32of looking up to him as far as the coaches go.
- 6:34But Tom Coughlin was one of those who, you know, followed,
- 6:37you know, you know, about being a being a coach in our on our
- 6:40staff. And he was just a tremendous, A
- 6:43tremendous resource because he had success at the collegiate
- 6:46level. And you know, he brought that to
- 6:48to the Giants. And then when he reemerged with
- 6:51the Giants, you know you saw what he brought.
- 6:52We are talking to former New York Giants Super Bowl champion,
- 6:55two time Super Bowl champion linebacker Gary Reasons.
- 6:58Lawrence Taylor is one of the greatest, if not the greatest
- 7:01defensive lineman of all time. What type of player was it?
- 7:05What kind of leader was he in the locker room?
- 7:07And, and everybody said he was like a lightning bolt, not only
- 7:11in the locker room, but on the football field.
- 7:13What do you know about him that other fans don't know about him
- 7:17that he has done behind the scenes to hit for his teammates,
- 7:21that other people don't understand?
- 7:23Lawrence, I think, was a tremendous teammate.
- 7:26He played his heart out for everybody.
- 7:28You gave your all and he and he noticed that you were giving
- 7:31your all. You had no issues with Lawrence,
- 7:34but if you were not contributing, if you were not
- 7:37putting, putting yourself out there in subtle ways, he would
- 7:40he would make let you know that. And I saw a few of those things
- 7:43go on. There were a lot of younger guys
- 7:45that came through with drafts and different things.
- 7:47And you know that he didn't see Fitz here.
- 7:50I think he had a couple of conversations with Parcells
- 7:52along the way about questioning about some of the some of these
- 7:55these personnel that had showed up in our locker room.
- 8:00And you know, he he was pretty blunt about it sometimes.
- 8:03But when we had a team together for every year, for every
- 8:06season, he was as good a teammate as ever, you know, And
- 8:09he, he would work his tail off. And I, I think he is the
- 8:14greatest defensive player to ever play the game.
- 8:16That's that's my take on it because I got to see him on a
- 8:19day-to-day basis and I saw the superlative athleticism that he
- 8:24possessed that it's just incomprehensible how he could do
- 8:29the things he did on the field. So you look at what he did as as
- 8:33an edge rusher back in the day in the 80s and early 90s and you
- 8:36know, he was tremendous and he set the standard way up here, up
- 8:42here for guys to reach to. Well, they're still trying to
- 8:45emulate that today. You know, there's not, there's a
- 8:48couple of guys that are trying to get close to him in speed and
- 8:52not going to get close to him in size, capability and his speed.
- 8:55But I think I think that Lawrence really had a lot of
- 8:59just God-given traits that he could that he could play and at
- 9:03a high level. And that motor never turned off.
- 9:06So he was relentless. And that was a key to our
- 9:09defense back in the day, being relentless defensive, you know,
- 9:13guys on the field and you know, much like the Super Bowl this
- 9:16weekend. But the Seahawks they were, in
- 9:18that they ran their defense that they were much, much like that
- 9:21with their Super Bowl championship.
- 9:23So assisting one of your other teammates, Sue and Carl Banks,
- 9:25that he's been kind of controversial since he's become
- 9:28a New York Giants analyst. I love him.
- 9:30Taking shots at some of the Giants fans over there with Eli
- 9:32Manning, Odell Beckham we've seen in the past and then this
- 9:34year most recently with Dexter Lawrence calling him out for the
- 9:37lack of effort and stuff like that too.
- 9:38First obviously playing with him like, was he that same kind of
- 9:41way as a player? And what if you think thoughts
- 9:43him now as an analyst? You know, I think that Carl, he
- 9:47and I came into the league in the same year, in 84, in the
- 9:49draft. And so, you know, we had good
- 9:53friendship and for us to be kind of In Sync as players, we
- 9:56started, you know, in 1984, the first game that Parcells will
- 10:00allow us to start was was was an against Atlanta is week number
- 10:04six. You know, the the games were
- 10:06started early on. And then, you know, he put Carl
- 10:09and us in and we stayed into the game, but he didn't start us
- 10:12until week 6 because he like he like veteran players.
- 10:15But Carl, he displayed, you know, they tried to test him in
- 10:18training camp. They, they did a lot of things
- 10:21for the first round pick, the number three overall pick, which
- 10:24is a really super high pick for the Giants back in the day.
- 10:28And he got paid quite a bit of money.
- 10:29And they wanted to see if he was worth that money for some of the
- 10:33things that they put him through physically, mentally in training
- 10:37camp. Parcells was all about that,
- 10:39trying to create, trying to create toughness on our team and
- 10:42trying to agitate Carl a little bit.
- 10:45But I tell you what, Carl, Carl persisted and he came through
- 10:50shining colors because he showed his physical toughness, his
- 10:53grit. And he's that same way today.
- 10:55He's not, he hasn't changed either.
- 10:57When he sees something that isn't right, he's going to let
- 11:00you know it. When he sees something that he
- 11:02think can be a fit, he'll let you know that.
- 11:04And he's going to do that with consistency and persistency.
- 11:08And I think he's, I think he's Carl has worked himself into
- 11:12being a quality, quality analyst.
- 11:15And really he's got his heart that he that he that he bleeds
- 11:18blue with, but he's got to have his mouth out there talking and
- 11:23he has to kind of be sometimes in the middle of the road.
- 11:28You know, he can't be all giants blue all the time, you know, but
- 11:30he's got to be as an analyst. You've got to be down that road.
- 11:33When I go to do, you know, I do broadcasting, you know, I'm, I'm
- 11:36very much down the middle because, you know, these college
- 11:38teams, I'm, I'm not a part of any of them.
- 11:40I, I can walk that line and talk about either one of these teams.
- 11:44Carl, he knows a lot more about the giants than he does about
- 11:48the opponents because of his his proximity.
- 11:52And when he goes to do a game, he's trying to be pretty much
- 11:56even Steven with, with that, but he can't be it's, it's, it's,
- 11:59it's just not there. That's, that's the, the
- 12:01broadcast ship of the, the New York Giants, that radio
- 12:04broadcast with that he's on. And it's, it's something that
- 12:07it's just hard to do, but he's navigating it.
- 12:10And, and I think that Carl's got, he brings a lot to the
- 12:13game. I think he brings a lot of
- 12:15knowledge, a lot of experience, and he's got a lot of great
- 12:17thoughts. Jeff Hostetler I remember when
- 12:20Phil Simms went down. I was young and a lot of people,
- 12:23a lot of Giant fans were worried.
- 12:25Phil's Sims, The great Phil Sims goes down.
- 12:29We're not winning a Super Bowl. We're not going to make a
- 12:31playoff run. And what a playoff run Jeff
- 12:33Hostetler had. What type of player was Jeff
- 12:36Hostetler? Well, another. 1984 draft member
- 12:38with Carl and I, William Roberts and you know, amongst our class.
- 12:42But Jeff really, you know, he had no meaningful snaps before
- 12:46that point in the season when when Phil got injured.
- 12:50So he had to go into the game. And but every one of us on the
- 12:54team that was there from the time that Jeff stepped on on the
- 12:57the team in in the in the backup role, we could see his
- 13:01athleticism, we could see his game savvy.
- 13:04We could see how well he competed and he always
- 13:07approached every week with a great attitude and he continued
- 13:12to do that. So, you know, as we all know,
- 13:15you know, the news stories were the seemingly indestructible
- 13:17Phil Simms, but at one point when he got when he goes down
- 13:22our our season lies in the hands of a player who really hadn't
- 13:28had that many meaningful snaps in in his career, let alone the
- 13:32season. So that's that was a question
- 13:35that had to be answered. And Jeff came through in flying
- 13:39colors, as we all know, and I'm very glad that we had that
- 13:43quality depth and that quality type of a player.
- 13:45And he obviously went on to have a tremendous NFL career.
- 13:49So just another one of your teammates, a guy you maybe you
- 13:51played against in practice a lot too, one of the greatest tight
- 13:53ends of that era. And Mark Bavaro first, like you
- 13:56think he changed the tight end position for a lot of what it
- 13:59was in the 70s was kind of that real grading type guys and like
- 14:02transitioning to what it is now and what was it like going up
- 14:04against him in practice? Yeah, Mark was a was a
- 14:07tremendous athlete and, you know, kind of a guy, no
- 14:10nonsense, just, you know, I'm going to put my head down.
- 14:12I'm going to be a tough guy and this is what you're going to
- 14:15get. And he's like that.
- 14:16And it's just amazing how this this, this fake punt opens up
- 14:19right there and I I just get to run down the field.
- 14:21I love seeing this anyway. But you know, with the with
- 14:26Mark, Mark was a guy who really, really quiet.
- 14:29You know, he kind of kept himself really wasn't outgoing,
- 14:33but boy, when he was on the field, he had he had a demeanor
- 14:37about him that was unmistakable. You ask him, I think he changed
- 14:41the game. I think he did have a have a
- 14:42huge impact on the game. Not only was he a premium
- 14:45blocker at the line of scrimmage, but he had the
- 14:48ability to get open, make booze to get out, get it, get out in
- 14:52space was it was very adept at catching the football and
- 14:55obviously made big plays. And and when he had his head
- 14:58down, you know, we all know what what who he could carry and a
- 15:01lot of players jump on his back and just take him for a ride.
- 15:04That was. That was Marc Duvar.
- 15:06We are talking to former New York Giants two time Super Bowl
- 15:09champion linebacker Garrett Reasons.
- 15:11We we spoke about Tom Coughlin, we spoke about Bill Belichick.
- 15:15We have to speak about Bill Parcells.
- 15:19I think one of the greatest defensive minds the NFL has ever
- 15:22seen. I think people forget what Bill
- 15:24Parcells has brought to the game.
- 15:26Look at the guys that he has drafted in the past.
- 15:28Look at the defensive lineman that have become a Hall of
- 15:31farmers. What type of head coach was he
- 15:34when you were with the New York Giants?
- 15:36I. Think he was the exact fit that
- 15:40we needed as a head coach. First of all, obviously Bill, we
- 15:44all know this. He's from, he's from the
- 15:46Northeast New Jersey guy and you know, another no nonsense guy.
- 15:51But the way he commanded the locker room was really magical.
- 15:56And the way he did that, he had the best way of being a coach.
- 16:03And he was different of how he coached with different players.
- 16:07And let me get let me get into this a little bit.
- 16:10He knew things about each of us that he knew.
- 16:14And any time he was in conversation with you, he would
- 16:16pick on those little things and bring them up.
- 16:19Whether it was a thorn in your side or whether he's trying to
- 16:22uplift you. He knew things about you that
- 16:24could push your buttons and he knew how to push those buttons.
- 16:29That was his, that was his superpower for him with our team
- 16:34in, in that era. And he, he, he came across as a
- 16:38guy who obviously had tremendous knowledge of the game, a tough
- 16:42guy from the from, from New Jersey.
- 16:44There's no doubt about that. And he brought that toughness,
- 16:47that blue collar mentality to us every single day.
- 16:50He coached his coaches as hard as he coached us.
- 16:56Now, when you think about that, that doesn't go talk, go on
- 17:00being talked about quite a bit. But when they're upstairs after
- 17:03we're all gone and he's and he's going off on those guys, it, it
- 17:07was no different than him going off on us on the field because I
- 17:11knew that he, he did that with the, with his coaches.
- 17:14And he would also lay him out out there on the field with us.
- 17:17But you know, he, he had a way of, of making people perform.
- 17:22And you know, the, the question that you didn't want to have him
- 17:25ask you was Gary, do you want the aisle or the window?
- 17:31You know what? That one.
- 17:32Means of course, of course. Yeah, we, we just don't want him
- 17:36to ask that question. So, but I think Bill Parcells
- 17:39was is was one-of-a-kind and definitely a tremendous head
- 17:42coach in the National Football League, a legendary, legendary
- 17:46figure in the Northeastern New Jersey, New York, and certainly
- 17:49someone that had put the team and the community on his back.
- 17:55And then he pulled, pulled with him a bunch of guys that he
- 17:58pulled together, myself included in the draft in 1984 and, and
- 18:02which kind of propelled us into the winning seasons and that
- 18:05from that year forward and it and it just kind of worked out
- 18:08really, really well. Unfortunately, we had our work
- 18:11stoppage that kind of kind of derailed things after our first
- 18:14Super Bowl championship. We'll talk about that another
- 18:16time. So yeah, let's shift to the
- 18:19current Giants. It seems like the linebacker
- 18:20position is the one that's gotten a lot of the the drama on
- 18:23the defensive side of the ball in the last few years.
- 18:25Brian Burns was the one that was calling out the Giants for the
- 18:27lack of effort at the end of the first end of the 2024 season.
- 18:31And then Kayvon Thibodeau, he's had all his antics.
- 18:33He played better this year, but now a big decision.
- 18:35Do they trade him? Do they keep him this year?
- 18:37And then Abdul Carter was the probably the most notable of all
- 18:39late to meetings might have been watching some inappropriate
- 18:42things in his rookie season played well after that, but
- 18:45still some some issues there. What are your across the all the
- 18:48linebacker, all those linebackers and there may be
- 18:51some character questions. Well, you, you take Burns.
- 18:55And when I, when I first saw Burns playing with the Giants, I
- 19:00thought he lacked motivation his first year.
- 19:03I, I didn't see that from him. I didn't see the the the all out
- 19:08game play that, you know, he was supposed to have.
- 19:12He then turned the level the the notch up couple of terms this
- 19:16year. And he certainly is now one of
- 19:19the cornerstones of that defense.
- 19:22And he is definitely a a premium player on the defensive ends as
- 19:25an edge rusher, outside rusher. And I think that he brought a
- 19:30lot of intensity to the Giants. You know, Abdul, we're all
- 19:33expecting to be him, be Superman.
- 19:35But let's just face it, he has to mature.
- 19:38He has to grow up. He's got to go through the
- 19:40paces. You can't you can't expect
- 19:42everybody to be the guy you want him to be.
- 19:45Put him in a box and be be perfect.
- 19:48Character issues, whether or not they're they're they're they're
- 19:50that or or what have you. Forget about that.
- 19:52Throw that crap out the window. Just get by it and move forward
- 19:55and grow. And I think that Abdul Carter at
- 19:58the end of the season, he did grow, OK.
- 20:01He obviously had some some big plays along the way towards the
- 20:04end of the year. And I think that he saw he sees
- 20:07in himself what he can become in the National Football League.
- 20:11So I don't think that there's any questions about his ability
- 20:13or about his about his play. It's just him possibly having a
- 20:17a little maturity of growth here potentially.
- 20:20It's going to have to be quick if he's going to going to be a
- 20:23factor in that Giants defense. We are talking to former New
- 20:26York Giants two time Super Bowl champion linebacker Gary
- 20:29Reasons. You know John Harbaugh is the
- 20:33new head coach for the New York Giants.
- 20:34The Giants have gone from coach to coach to coach since Tom
- 20:38Coughlin and struck out on every single one of them.
- 20:41You look at John Harbaugh, he's been successful.
- 20:44He won one Super Bowl, but a lot of people say that wasn't his
- 20:47team. Those weren't his players, his
- 20:49development of players, Lamar Jackson.
- 20:52Lamar Jackson was a guy that didn't want him to come back.
- 20:54He told the organization he would rather move forward with a
- 20:57new head coach. Do you think that John Harbaugh
- 21:01moving on to a new team, a new organization, getting paid as
- 21:04much as he has is the right move for the New York Giants?
- 21:08Do you think he was the right guy to hire over Mike McCarthy
- 21:11or maybe a Tomlin or one of these bigger, more known coaches
- 21:16or even the younger coaches like Minter?
- 21:19Do you think he was the right guy for the job?
- 21:20I absolutely, 100% think that he is the best fit from all of that
- 21:26group for the Giants right now. He brings something to the table
- 21:32that the previous coaches did not, and it's instant
- 21:38credibility. His ability to step in front of
- 21:42the team from day one and command a presence of them,
- 21:46knowing that he's a disciplinarian.
- 21:51He's a guy that is straightforward and the path is
- 21:55only one way and that is team and that's winning.
- 21:58And with his credentials and his championship caliber background,
- 22:03I think that he is out an outstanding choice for the
- 22:07giants And so glad that he was available for the giants in in
- 22:12in this in this cycle, because, you know, it wasn't written that
- 22:16he was going to be on the market, but it happened.
- 22:19And I think that it is a really, really good fit.
- 22:22He, he, you know, he reminds me of Tom Coughlin coming into, you
- 22:26know, the, the Giants organization as a head coach.
- 22:31I think that it's going to be something somewhat similar
- 22:34because Tom had a great command of, of personnel.
- 22:38He had a great command of, of, of the facilities and, and, and,
- 22:42and everything around it. I see John Harbaugh stepping in
- 22:44there, not missing a beat. I think that he's going to work
- 22:48very well with the front office. I, I, I think that there's a,
- 22:53the previous head coach, he needed to leave that.
- 22:57That's my opinion. And we, we're, we're, we're in
- 23:00the right, right position now with, with, with John Harbaugh
- 23:03there. And I think he can get the
- 23:04Giants back to prominence. I really do.
- 23:07So what about some of the assistant coaching hires, Greg
- 23:09Roman, they bring in as he has familiarity with John Harbaugh.
- 23:12Brian Callahan just brought in as the quarterback coach.
- 23:14He did well with Cincinnati. But again, that's Joe Burrow.
- 23:16Was he really the reason? And then just struggled this
- 23:18year with the Titans as a head coach?
- 23:20And then Matt Nagy, I think the one that I kind of questioned
- 23:23the most because, yeah, he did well with the Chiefs, but he
- 23:25wasn't really the main play caller with the Chiefs with Andy
- 23:27Reid. So what are your thoughts on all
- 23:29those? I don't care who they are, I
- 23:31really don't. It's the head coach's job to
- 23:34coach the coaches and the coaches coach the players.
- 23:38And it's kind of goes that way. If he had a chance, and I'm sure
- 23:41that John will do this and then probably can do it very easily.
- 23:44Have a conversation with Bill Parcells, basically talk about
- 23:47talk about structure and talk, talk about how you run this
- 23:50football team in this kind of environment.
- 23:53You know, he was a little bit isolated.
- 23:54You know, John, you know, in, in, in his in his former team.
- 23:58But but because it's not it's not the bubble that New York is.
- 24:01It certainly was not. That's going to be the only
- 24:03challenge. Can he navigate the, the media
- 24:06waters and so to speak as a head coach in New York?
- 24:10I don't think there's going to be an issue.
- 24:12I think that he's going to do it just fine.
- 24:14But I, I think that he's probably going to possibly throw
- 24:17out, throw, throw out the, the, the phone calls to the both
- 24:20Tomlin and, and Parcells, not Tomlin, but coach Hoffman and
- 24:25Tom and Parcells rather than to have about how do I run this job
- 24:29and how do we do this the right way with what I've got.
- 24:32And he's going to get that. He's going to get that their
- 24:34impressions, and he's going to blend that into what's going to
- 24:37be successful for him in New York.
- 24:39Gary, you look at Jackson Dart and obviously his first season
- 24:44he looked pretty good. He has some ups and downs.
- 24:47A lot of people question him moving outside of the pocket a
- 24:50little too much, not standing in the pocket and making the
- 24:52throws. Do you think a guy like John
- 24:55Harbaugh will be able to develop him into the quarterback that a
- 24:58lot of Giant fans believe he could?
- 24:59Be well. You develop a quarterback best
- 25:02by developing the players around the quarterback.
- 25:05Agree? Yes, and the reason being is
- 25:08that, you know, a quarterback is one guy.
- 25:10OK, if that right guard and the right tackle are horseshit, then
- 25:15you're going to have to have you're going to have to find
- 25:17some way to fix that problem before you're going to fix
- 25:19anything. He's going to be getting hit in
- 25:21the mouth. OK, There is a clock.
- 25:23There's a little clock in the quarterbacks head when when they
- 25:26know that that ball needs to be out of their hand or they need
- 25:29to take off and run. In Jackson Darts case, he has
- 25:32the ability to take off and run when things breakdown.
- 25:36We don't need to have him do that as much.
- 25:40And I think that in year 2 you're going to see a little bit
- 25:43more patience with Jackson simply because of he is the game
- 25:47is going to slow down for him a little bit.
- 25:49He's going to know what's what is coming, what's understanding
- 25:52of his understanding of the game.
- 25:54I just hope that, you know, coaching changes and, and, and,
- 25:57and changes in, in the system that he doesn't have to catch up
- 26:02a lot and, you know, they're trying to re figure things out.
- 26:05But I think it was tremendous what what he what he did early
- 26:09on. And I just thought he took a
- 26:12little bit too much on his shoulder as far as trying to
- 26:14make plays. You know, he got it, got it, got
- 26:17him dinged a couple of times. So that does happen.
- 26:20Joe Shane, a guy that I'm not a big fan of, I I got a chance to
- 26:25watch him on Hard Knocks. He pretty much threw Saquon
- 26:28Barkley to the dogs and eventually became an Eagle,
- 26:31something that John Merritt did not want to happen.
- 26:34And now he hires John Harbaugh. And if Joe Shane does not
- 26:38succeed this season, a lot of people think he's on the hot
- 26:41seat and maybe John Harbell gets to pick his GM to work with.
- 26:45Do you believe that Joe Shane is the right guy for the job?
- 26:48Do you think he's made more mistakes than right acquisitions
- 26:52that has helped this organization move forward?
- 26:55I think that he's put players in in there to for the coaches to
- 26:58utilize that we're adequate and and unfortunately a couple of
- 27:02couple of injuries happened. You know, obviously my league
- 27:04going down early was not a was not something that was easily
- 27:07overcome this this season. But Sheen, there's you know, I'm
- 27:135050 on him. I think that he understands well
- 27:18enough how to put the pieces together.
- 27:21The the thing that a general manager and someone who is
- 27:24responsible for bringing players into the organization, they have
- 27:28to have an alignment with the coaching staff.
- 27:30They've got to have an alignment with the vision of what type of
- 27:33player, what is the skill set, what is the what is the
- 27:35adaptability to the particular system and style that you're
- 27:38going to play. And if that aligns with Harbaugh
- 27:42and his schemes, there won't be any problems.
- 27:44There won't be any issues. I haven't heard of any, any,
- 27:47any, any issues or any, or anything where the thought
- 27:50process is differing from either one of them.
- 27:53I think if there's they're on the same track together and
- 27:56that's what they how they should be, it'll all be fine.
- 27:59But if something goes wrong and you get a player in or out,
- 28:02that's not necessarily in the way of their combined thinking.
- 28:06It's tough sledding. It really is it, you know you're
- 28:08walking on in murky waters. Both of them are in reality
- 28:12because you know, the the team is only as good as the players
- 28:17play it on the field and the players have to play the game
- 28:20through the tutelage of their coaching staff, not from the
- 28:24general manager, but from the coaching staff.
- 28:27So that's they have to translate that into workable instruction
- 28:32and being able to be a physical force to be able to play.
- 28:35That is what what that has to happen.
- 28:38There is things that you have to bring other guys along that are
- 28:42just pieces of this would be an offensive lineman, defensive
- 28:45lineman, you know, secondary, you've got to bring other pieces
- 28:48together and they've got to be cohesive.
- 28:51This cohesive structure really, I think it, I think it started
- 28:56to happen early in the season and then it was kind of wobbling
- 28:59in the middle. And I think towards the end,
- 29:01they kind of got a semblance of the of the cohesive in his back
- 29:03ended on a on a pretty decent, pretty decent note.
- 29:07So that is where I think that this team really needs to needs
- 29:11to shine. They need to Coheed be cohesive
- 29:14and come together. If they do that early in the
- 29:16season in 2026, it could be could be special.
- 29:21You know, obviously we know it's the 40th anniversary of our
- 29:23Super Bowl 21 season coming up. So I'm hoping these guys, you
- 29:27know, bring a little fanfare to it.
- 29:29I want to shift gears a little bit because I know you do a lot
- 29:31of college football broadcasting, obviously a lot of
- 29:33landscape to change in college football with the NIL, the
- 29:36transfer portal and this new College Football Playoff format.
- 29:38There's a lot of old school coaches like Dabo Sweeney and
- 29:42Nick Saban taking shots of that in your time broadcasting
- 29:45college football, Like, do you think these changes are good
- 29:47from what you've seen in the past?
- 29:50Absolutely not. I'm an old school guy.
- 29:53I, you know, navigating NIL out there is a nightmare.
- 29:57Navigating the transfer portal is a nightmare.
- 30:00It is, it is really, really difficult.
- 30:04You know, I went to a, a school in Louisiana and Northwestern
- 30:07State and we're basically, we're, we're Division 1 college
- 30:10football program, but we call it the CFCS program.
- 30:12It's an FCS school. They play at the FCS level.
- 30:16You know, the one thing that is, is, is extremely crazy right now
- 30:20is money's flying around right, left with a lot of players and,
- 30:24and all the players are just chasing money.
- 30:26It's really what that's really what NIL is and really what
- 30:29transfer portal is all about is there is these guys are chasing.
- 30:32There's no legacy, There's no, there's no loyalty to the team.
- 30:38It's it's just a lot of lot of stuff.
- 30:41So these coaches have a really real, they preach to him all the
- 30:45time about, you know, wanting to be there and be cohesive and all
- 30:48this. But well, let's face it, when
- 30:50you have 20, thirty, 40% of your team entering that transfer
- 30:54portal at the end of the season, everybody's, everybody is, is,
- 30:58is, is, is, is trying to find a way to, to do it.
- 31:02And it's all comes down to money, you know, and, and
- 31:05unfortunately the smaller schools just don't have those
- 31:07resources. But you know, the, it's, it's so
- 31:10I, I did, I completely dislike it.
- 31:12I completely AM. I'm on the, I'm the old school
- 31:18guy and I, and I, I'll stay, I'll stay that way.
- 31:22I just don't like what it is. But I think what is holding it
- 31:25all back? And it's, it's really truly
- 31:27it's, it's, it's the fair marketplace.
- 31:29You know, we live in a society in in the US that I can't tell
- 31:34you how much money you can or should make or what income or
- 31:37where you can go to work. It's not my job to do that.
- 31:40If I was doing that, I'd be controlling you.
- 31:42Oh, that sounds like that. They do what they do to college
- 31:45football players. They control them.
- 31:47Not anymore. So, you know, with the NFL and
- 31:50the NBA and MLB, we all have unions because we join a union
- 31:54so that we can collectively bargain for our our rights.
- 31:58But the, there's no way there's not a structure right now that
- 32:02college athletes are bonding together to have collectively
- 32:05bargained rights. So it's, it's really it's, it's,
- 32:09it's crazy out there. I don't like it, but it's it's
- 32:13something that you know, a lot of people, it's just, it's just
- 32:16talk, but there's a lot of money flying around.
- 32:20Hey, Gary, it's Aaron Fisher. I'm the producer.
- 32:23I just had to ask him. A huge Giants fan.
- 32:25I had to ask you a question. I also coached high school
- 32:27football up by West Point. And I I obviously I grew up on
- 32:32the hit, You know, your play against the Broncos clinching
- 32:35the playoffs 89. But and I'll play, I'll play it
- 32:38again. I played it a little bit
- 32:39earlier, but if I taught somebody to do this, Gary, I
- 32:44would probably get fired from my job as a high school coach.
- 32:47Because today if you lead with your head, you know, despite the
- 32:52fact it was one of the greatest plays I've, you know, in
- 32:54football history, in my opinion, they probably flag you for it in
- 32:58the NFL today. And I know in youth it's
- 33:02something that they really frown upon.
- 33:04So I just kind of wanted your take on, you know, how the games
- 33:06change. You said you're an old school
- 33:08guy, obviously with the NIL, but I can imagine your opinions on
- 33:11tackling, you know, the the going from the biting the ball
- 33:14to, you know, the rugby style tackling when Pete Carroll kind
- 33:17of, you know, did it with the Legion of Boom.
- 33:19That's kind of been a big thing in high school circles, and I
- 33:22just want to know what your take was on that.
- 33:24Well, first of all, you know, back in the day, that was a a
- 33:27very physical play and a tough play and, you know, and you dive
- 33:30over the top and hopefully you hit something, you dive, you
- 33:33take off and hopefully you, you hit your target.
- 33:35And I, and I did and, but believe it or not, even in, in
- 33:40today's rules, it's between the tackle box.
- 33:42So that's a run play. It's a running area.
- 33:45There's, there's, have you ever seen a helmet, the helmet call
- 33:50called in the in the tackle, tackle to zone.
- 33:53No, there's not. So it's a, it's a legal tackle.
- 33:56People are confused about that. It's just they can see see it
- 33:59coming over the top and it's and it's pronounced, but it's not
- 34:02when you're in between the tackles.
- 34:04Regardless of that, I am in 100% agreement and favor of some of
- 34:12the changes to the game as far as safety, OK, I definitely
- 34:19think that some of the protected protections that the receivers
- 34:23give as far as getting blown up and things out there.
- 34:27And you know, I think those are definitely the way to teach the
- 34:30game better. Teaching a style of tackling at
- 34:33a youth level and bringing that up through into their high
- 34:36school and college days. If they're if they get that far,
- 34:39If you know how to tackle from the earliest days and and you
- 34:42know, you want to be on the head, head and shoulder area
- 34:44here on both sides, you know, and you know, leave that pretty
- 34:47smile out of that whole, that whole equation that it'll be
- 34:50that way. It takes practice.
- 34:52You know, the reps that you do in practice only can can
- 34:56translate into the game. And when you're in a situation
- 34:59to where you're going to make a tackle or a play, hopefully
- 35:03you're going to be coached enough and you've practiced
- 35:05enough to where you do it automatically.
- 35:07You just make a good sound tackle.
- 35:09So the youth coaches of today are as important as the rules
- 35:15and the officials and all the different things that go into
- 35:18it, because they're the ones teaching the better techniques.
- 35:21And I applaud these guys for doing that because they do it in
- 35:24a, in a, in a good way, obviously keeping safety in
- 35:27mind, keeping players on the field and keeping everybody
- 35:29healthy. And it, it, it is one of those
- 35:32things that the, the thing has got, I think it's gotten better
- 35:35over the course of time. And I'm a former NFL LPA
- 35:38executive committee member and you know, I, you know, my, my,
- 35:41my legacy is, is kind of down that line of I was on the
- 35:46executive committee when the player association, we got free
- 35:49agency for the, for the, for the players in 93.
- 35:52So that that is is great, that monumental change of free
- 35:58agency. And then there's other things
- 36:00that have happened with rules that and safety.
- 36:03Those are changes to the game that have propelled the NFL to
- 36:08be what it is today. I mean, there's there's just
- 36:11been tremendous uptick in that. However, now here's the other
- 36:16side. The defensive guys in the
- 36:19National Football League are at a complete disadvantage when
- 36:24you're outside of the box, okay, you can't touch anybody.
- 36:27You can't you can't run with them after 5 yards, you can't
- 36:29you can't bump into them. Otherwise you're going to throw
- 36:32a little yank little, you have a flag.
- 36:34But on Sunday in the Super Bowl, you can run and bump and jump
- 36:39and you're almost, you're almost can really take them apart.
- 36:42But there weren't going to be any flags thrown on Sunday
- 36:44because they they were letting the players play.
- 36:46That's kind of back in the day, like we had it where we we
- 36:49could, we could we could can kind of play like that, but it
- 36:53was fair because both teams were were doing so on Sunday.
- 36:56So I'm I'm liking some of the note the the non contact as far
- 36:59as as keeping guys safe. The rules have been changed and
- 37:04obviously you're in more in favor for the offense in the NFL
- 37:06today. And you know, it's just it's
- 37:08just the way that way it is. And I see the fandom of looking
- 37:13to see explosive plays, big passing plays and, and, and
- 37:16touchdowns. That's all good.
- 37:17It's all good. But when you see a physical,
- 37:19tough football game like we saw on Sunday, it kind of takes you
- 37:23back to the the era of the 1980s New York Giants that that looked
- 37:28like a a normal Sunday for us. Gary, you look at the league,
- 37:32you see all the different rule changes and obviously with the
- 37:36CT problem they've had over the years, we've had a lot of
- 37:39players come on this show and said, said to us and told us
- 37:43that the NFL has not taken care of the former players that have
- 37:47helped this game grow with obviously insurance policies.
- 37:51These guys have had knee problems, back problems, head
- 37:54trauma. They're not getting taken care
- 37:56of. Do you think that the NFL needs
- 37:57to step in and help the former players that helped this game
- 38:01grow as big as it's been over the last couple of years?
- 38:05Well, when we all signed up to play on the line, on the, on
- 38:08the, on the field, we, we knew what we were signing up for, you
- 38:12know, as far as potential injuries and and so forth.
- 38:16I was one of those players that went through an entire 9 year
- 38:19NFL career and never had a major injury.
- 38:22I never had an issue. And I was, I was, you know, I
- 38:27was kind of built right and being able to stay on the field
- 38:31and never missed any time. So I it I had AI had a little,
- 38:35little different perspective of the injury situation.
- 38:38But I do see guys and and even and even now I I'm I'm
- 38:42definitely of the opinion that through collective bargaining
- 38:47and what the NFLPA has been able to achieve, they have made
- 38:50significant strides though for players and benefits post
- 38:53playing and that are going on to you know, I'm I'm my birthday is
- 38:57this month. I'm going to turn 64.
- 38:59My congratulations. Well, next next year, this time
- 39:03at when I turned 65. My, my benefits from the NFL
- 39:09stop as far as health benefits, there is what's called an NFL
- 39:13dedicated hospital network and we have a stipend every for
- 39:17every player that that, that played on a, on a recurring
- 39:21every annual basis for primary care.
- 39:23And, and I just had, I wound up, I hit, I had, I had an accident
- 39:27in Louisiana in May. I was driving my my truck and
- 39:31anyways, it was at night and I was going 70 miles an hour and I
- 39:35hit an alligator on the highway. And so when I was hitting the
- 39:39brake, my left knee popped the popped the dash.
- 39:41Anyway, So the next morning I walked up and I woke up and
- 39:44started to walk and I stumbled And when I wound up, they
- 39:49couldn't take me down to the NFL.
- 39:50But that damn alligator got me on the highway.
- 39:53And so I had a surgery just in just in November here just to
- 39:57clean out a scope for for my left knee.
- 39:59But I'm I'm telling you this for one reason is that.
- 40:02Through the dedicated NFL, dedicated hospital network for
- 40:05former players, we each have a stipend.
- 40:07It's $25,000 per year for primary care, but you can think
- 40:12they'll also handle some surgical situations and things.
- 40:15So to that, I applaud the, the, the NFLPA and the NF and the NFL
- 40:20for providing that, that to us. But as I turned 65, those go
- 40:26away simply because the NFL and PA figured out that, oh, these
- 40:29guys get met to get Medicare. You know, that's probably where,
- 40:31that's probably where we'll go. So I, I, I, I'm one of those
- 40:36guys that the more we can do through the collective
- 40:38bargaining aspect of it for the betterment of players long term
- 40:43and, and into the future. Hopefully they they have that
- 40:47you when I was with the leadership group of, of Gene
- 40:50Upshaw, when he was the executive director of the NFLPA
- 40:55and I admired Gene and his and his, you know, just toughness
- 40:59and grit and, and how he brought us along.
- 41:02And he had, he had a good old saying is that always remember
- 41:06the past, do well in the present and look to the future.
- 41:11All three areas of players are, are, are what he's talking
- 41:14about. And we don't ever want to lose
- 41:17sight of of who got us to where we're, where we are today.
- 41:20You know, and I'm, I'm one of those guys looking down to the
- 41:23current players. Hey, keep us, keep us in your
- 41:25crosshairs when you start talking to the NFLPA, how can
- 41:27you improve our benefits, which will in turn be your benefits
- 41:31when when the time comes down the road?
- 41:34But over time, over time, the last couple of collective
- 41:36bargaining agreements, there have been, there have been
- 41:38significant improvements for former players.
- 41:41So I'm a little bit on the other side of the fence on that
- 41:43conversation. I, I do think that there are,
- 41:47there are available benefits for guys if they can you if they can
- 41:51get to them and they know how to do that.
- 41:52Most everyone should because there's, it's simple NFL player
- 41:55benefits.com go in there, login, you know, figure it out.
- 41:59I. Wonder if I could do that.
- 42:00I've never been an NFL player. Maybe I could put if you can
- 42:04give. It a try if you put in my future
- 42:07in the past. Do you want?
- 42:08It no all one year worth from Gary reasons here you can have
- 42:14my $25,000 take care of yourself Gary.
- 42:21I've I've got 2 questions for you.
- 42:23One, why isn't Eli Manning a Hall of Famer and #2 the NFL is
- 42:28trying to bring in another game 18 game season.
- 42:32What is the NFL trying to do here?
- 42:33Do you think this is right for the players?
- 42:35Is this protecting the players? You said just just a few moments
- 42:39ago the NFL is is making great strides on protecting the
- 42:43player. Now all of a sudden, ladies and
- 42:45gentlemen, you're you're hearing that the NFL wants to bring an
- 42:4918 game season. Why do you think the NFL is
- 42:53proposing this to the players? One reason, money, it all comes
- 42:57down to money and grabbing audience and grabbing viewership
- 43:01and, and it's all about money and it always has been.
- 43:04So way back when it used to be a 12 game season, way back when it
- 43:07used to be a 14 game season, way back when, 16 game season.
- 43:10This year, 17 when I was on the PA, an executive group, we were
- 43:15fighting and fighting and fighting.
- 43:16The expansion of this and, and you know what we went through as
- 43:21players in my era, we got paid, guess what, $400.00 a week for
- 43:26training camp, $400.00 We didn't get our salaries.
- 43:29Then we got $400.00 a week for training camp.
- 43:32Go think about that right there. You're, you're putting yourself
- 43:35out there in practice for 400 bucks a week.
- 43:38My goodness. And you know how, how good does
- 43:40that feel? But that's changed a little bit.
- 43:43The NFL is trying to grow in in one way.
- 43:46It's finding ways to capture audience, give them more viewing
- 43:49opportunities. They've already grabbed Monday
- 43:51nights for Monday Night Football, Thursday night,
- 43:53Thursday Night Football, and then you have sometimes special
- 43:57edition Saturday and Sunday, but definitely Sunday.
- 44:00And you can see early game, a late afternoon game and then an
- 44:04evening game on Sunday. And you know, they're trying to
- 44:08find those windows of opportunity because they grab
- 44:11audience. And the NFL is the number one
- 44:15opportunity for for partners and sponsors and brands to make an
- 44:18impact through through television, you know, in, in in
- 44:22today's world. And it is, there's nothing
- 44:24getting close to it. So when you think about the
- 44:27impact that the NFL has has had, that's why there's so much
- 44:30revenue, there's so much growth and it's deserving, you know,
- 44:34the players going to get get their part and, and it's, and
- 44:37it's, it's something that the the brands are trying to
- 44:40capitalize on. So going to another ball game,
- 44:44first of all, I'll tell you this, as as players age, going
- 44:48through their careers, your body slow, the healing times slows
- 44:53down. So when you get to 252627,
- 44:57you're you're, you're, you're you.
- 44:59What used to be used to as a 22 year old, you could pop right up
- 45:02and go and but when you get to that, that, that a 2526, it
- 45:06starts to slow down. And as you get into your 30s, it
- 45:09starts to get, take longer to get healed every single week.
- 45:13I see, I see an issue out there. I don't know what that, that
- 45:16magical balance is of, of, of time before games and those
- 45:21kinds of things. They're different that they
- 45:23really are. It's, it's different for a lot
- 45:25of guys to be able to do that. Recovery times are, are
- 45:28challenging. And then you have, you know,
- 45:30just trying to put your body out there for an extra weekend.
- 45:36And believe it or not, there will not be an agreement by the
- 45:40national, by the NFL, PA without extending salaries one more week
- 45:46as far as you know, whatever the gross is.
- 45:50Yeah, there's going to be, there's going to, if there is a
- 45:52game added to the, to the, to the schedule again, which they
- 45:57have now, there will be another bump in player salaries.
- 46:01And it's, and it's not going to be organic.
- 46:04It's going to be automatic because they're just, they're
- 46:07just extending it and you have to pay them because you're going
- 46:10to have a right an opportunity to derive designated gross
- 46:15income from the broadcast and, and game, game, game gate
- 46:19receipts and everything else. So I don't necessarily like it.
- 46:24I don't I don't like extending it.
- 46:26But you know what's better than being home on the couch for for
- 46:29as many weekends as we can watching the NFL?
- 46:31That that's the fans point of it.
- 46:33The fans don't understand what it takes to get ready every
- 46:35single week and how, how, how, how, how difficult it is from
- 46:39Sunday to Sunday just to get your body healed.
- 46:42Eli Manning, Why is he not in the Hall of Fame?
- 46:44What the hell, I think. I think, I think there's some
- 46:46monkeying around going on too there.
- 46:49There's some there's some players out there that are in in
- 46:51this this world that are not really coming to the realization
- 46:57that that he's a a bona fide deserved entry into the Hall of
- 47:02Fame. There's you look at his body of
- 47:04work. It is it is comparable to more,
- 47:08if not it not most of the the enshrined already NFL
- 47:13quarterbacks that are in in the in the Hall of Fame and with his
- 47:17legacy of championships, basically how he conducted
- 47:21himself with one team. I, I, I can't I can't say
- 47:26enough. I I was fortunate enough to be
- 47:28inducted in the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame.
- 47:31Eli and I was the first New York former Giants player to be
- 47:33there. I had to I had to bring Eli
- 47:35along in and had had him there sitting there with him in in
- 47:40Louisiana a few years back when he was when he was brought in
- 47:43there and it was it was fun to visit with him.
- 47:45He he's just, you know, he and his brother.
- 47:47They're, they're those guys. They, they're, they've got the
- 47:50world, you know, looking at them and they're, they're in a good
- 47:54spot, but there's a deserving spot that he needs to be.
- 47:58And it's a, it's in that Hall of Fame next to his brother.
- 48:02And I think that that's going to happen sooner than later.
- 48:05Gary, we really appreciate the time we got to get you on the
- 48:07show. This was one of those interviews
- 48:09we got to get to know you a little bit.
- 48:11I'm a little crazy. My interviewing could be a
- 48:14little outlandishly nuts, but I wanted to be professional
- 48:18tonight. I wanted to give you a
- 48:19professional interview and kind of give you my, my take on what
- 48:22I thought or what you think of your New York Giants.
- 48:26I am a Jet fan. Everyone of everybody else on
- 48:29this show besides Joppa or Giant fans, we have Fish, who you just
- 48:32met. Speedy and Tommy Poops over
- 48:35here. They're all Giant fans.
- 48:37I, I do not hate the Giants. I never hated the Giants.
- 48:40I just can't stand the Giant fan.
- 48:43Are you? Hey, let me ask you a question
- 48:44here, Jets fan. Are you on medication too?
- 48:46All the time. All the time, man.
- 48:48I'm on. Blood pressure, cholesterol, I
- 48:50mean, you name it, I'm on it. I have acid reflux.
- 48:53I mean, I'm on. I just, I was just looking, you
- 48:56know, the one little picture I can see of you, I thought that
- 48:58there might be a little something going on, so.
- 49:04Well, I'm a little crazy and if you actually listen to the show
- 49:08and we've been a top 100 show in well, we're right there.
- 49:11I think we were ranked 1:15 today.
- 49:13The other day we were one O 6. We're one of the best shows
- 49:16right now in the country. Nathan reached out to us and he
- 49:19always gives us such great guests and he had we had Howard
- 49:22Howard cross on last week from your giant team and now we had
- 49:26you. You're sensational.
- 49:28Keep up the good work and let me show.
- 49:30You what I'm doing now. Also, I'm kind of paring down my
- 49:33broadcast work and that is all kind of by design.
- 49:37And really what I've I've done is I've put together a, a
- 49:41platform and it's called Reasons to Believe.
- 49:45I have a book that I've penned, it's coming out this spring,
- 49:49Reasons to Believe. And it all supports what I'm
- 49:52doing now. And what I basically do is I
- 49:53teach leaders how to perform under pressure.
- 49:56It's from using lessons that I've learned from my days
- 50:00playing in the NFL under championship environments, as
- 50:02well as 30 years in broadcasting.
- 50:04And, and also I've been an executive for for 20 plus years
- 50:07in in the corporate space. So I take that to companies,
- 50:13corporate environments and give them some messaging and, and,
- 50:16and teach them along the way. So this platform Reasons to
- 50:20believe it's it's out there now go to garyreasons.com and you
- 50:24can find out all about it and happy to visit with anybody,
- 50:28keynote speaker, event speaker, but also this Reasons to believe
- 50:31platform, you're going to hear quite a bit about it upcoming
- 50:34year, this year, I believe and along with this book and I'll be
- 50:38back, I'll be happy to come back on and put these out and we'll
- 50:41and we'll talk it up, OK. Absolutely.
- 50:43I think you're a great personality.
- 50:45I think you have a lot to say and I think you can give so much
- 50:48information not only about football, but really the back
- 50:52end of, you know, careers and, and growing into a personality
- 50:57and, and, and really going after your goals.
- 50:59So why not? Gary, I, I love you, man.
- 51:01You've done everything that you've done in your career.
- 51:05You could see that you're a champion and, and you've built
- 51:08such a great rapport in this business outside of the game of
- 51:11football. It's, it's pretty cool.
- 51:12It's and I I wish you nothing but the best and and we
- 51:15definitely would like like to get you on again.
- 51:18Thanks guys. I appreciate it.
- 51:19It's fun tonight. Absolutely.
- 51:21Ladies and gentlemen, 2 time Super Bowl champion, the one
- 51:25they call Gary Reasons. The man, the myth, the legend,
- 51:31sensational. Thank you, Nath.
- 51:33He was a great 1. He really was.
- 51:35I loved it. Absolutely loved it and looking
- 51:38forward to getting him on. We'll talk a little bit about
- 51:40his book. We'll speak and we'll deliver.
- 51:43Now ladies and gentlemen, we call this What's Beef?
- 51:55Do you know what beef is? Do you know what beef is?
- 51:59Which? One are you afraid?
- 52:01I fight you both together If you want.
- 52:03I fight you about 1 poor time behind my back.
- 52:05I fight you, stand on my foot. I fight you with my eyes.
- 52:09Close. What are you?
- 52:09Scared. Watch your mouth.
- 52:12I see you guaranteed to be. I see you one more time.
- 52:18You want to jerk me off? All right, guys, welcome to
- 52:25Beef, a segment that we do whenever there's.
- 52:29Beef. In the sports world, Errol, we
- 52:33talked about it earlier today when I had you on the phone.
- 52:36Ben Rodlisberger was called out on the Cam Hayward podcast by
- 52:42Joey Porter Senior. I think we've got the clip,
- 52:46Speedy. Why don't you roll the credits
- 52:49here? The Brotherhood because like.
- 52:52The. Shit the seven do that did that
- 52:55we don't talk about is crazy like like out of anybody should
- 53:01talk. He should never grab a
- 53:02microphone and really talk steal a business because if we talk
- 53:06and steal a business, his ass is foul of all foul.
- 53:11Like the shit that he's did is foul of all foul.
- 53:13He's not a good teammate. Won a Super Bowl, would he?
- 53:17But the person, he's just not a good teammate.
- 53:20Like he knows that. Anybody in the Steeler building
- 53:24knows that. But we protected him because
- 53:28I've only won one Super Bowl, and that was my quarterback.
- 53:31So do I love my quarterback? Yeah.
- 53:32But is he a good person? No.
- 53:36There it is, Errol. After this happened, there were
- 53:40a number of people that came out and supported what Joey Porter
- 53:45junior had to say, including Mason Rudolph, who was drafted
- 53:50as Ben Roethlisberger's backup. There were a few other ones,
- 53:55mostly because they're going after Tomlin.
- 53:58Roethlisberger kind of said that maybe it's time for Tomlin to
- 54:00step down. The fact that he went after the
- 54:03guy that might be the only one he couldn't talk about set off a
- 54:08Spieler's veteran. And a lot of guys, even though
- 54:10Cam Hayward stayed very quiet the entire time, we're not
- 54:13happy. So, Errol, what's the deal with
- 54:15this beef? Well, there's a lot of
- 54:17quarterbacks that we've heard are not liked by their
- 54:20teammates. Aaron Rodgers being another one.
- 54:22Brett Favre was another one. Phillip Rivers, we've heard
- 54:26through the Grapevine, people didn't like very, very much.
- 54:29Even though a lot of people that have been on this show said he
- 54:32was a good teammate. There are a lot of guys that
- 54:34you're not going to like playing over years and years of time on
- 54:38that roster. We all know that Ben
- 54:39Roethlisberger had rape charges. We all know that Ben
- 54:42Roethlisberger didn't take care of himself.
- 54:45He was riding a motorcycle when the team told him not to
- 54:49continue riding on a motorcycle. He got into a bad accident,
- 54:52almost hurt his career and hurt the the Pittsburgh Steelers and
- 54:56and really the growth in the championship competitive team
- 54:59they were after that. I think obviously Joey Porter
- 55:03and a lot of guys didn't like him because of who he was in his
- 55:06personality. And, and we've heard this many,
- 55:08many times. Ben Roethlisberger wasn't a
- 55:11person, a leader in the locker room, but when he went out
- 55:13there, he played hard. He was an elite quarterback, he
- 55:16won championships, and I think this might hurt him as a first
- 55:19ballot Hall of Famer. He might not be a first ballot
- 55:21Hall of Famer because of the fact that his own teammates
- 55:24didn't like him, but was he one of the greats of this era?
- 55:26100%. Is Joey Porter wrong about him
- 55:29coming out and speaking about closed door kind of stuff?
- 55:33No, you know why? Because all Steeler players over
- 55:36the years have thrown teammates under the bus Antonio Brown,
- 55:39Le'veon Bell. How many guys do we have to
- 55:41mention? Juju Smith?
- 55:44Schuster, all these guys have something to say about the
- 55:47organization and why? Because Mike Tomlin was there.
- 55:50Mike Tomlin was a player's coach, but he didn't know how to
- 55:53control his locker room. These guys spoke when they
- 55:56wanted to speak and they they thrown teammates under the bus
- 56:00many, many times. We all know the the competition
- 56:03they've had over the years with the Bengals.
- 56:05Remember that perfect Devante, perfect hit against Antonio
- 56:09Brown and teammates came out and protected Antonio Brown, the
- 56:13same guy that locked himself into a house and threaten to
- 56:17kill people. All right, That same guy that
- 56:19Joey Porter and all these guys stuck up for Antonio Brown.
- 56:23How many times did we hear that Joey Porter said that Le'veon
- 56:26Bell is a good guy? This is the same guy that was
- 56:28raping his cousin at the age of 14.
- 56:31So am I going to sit here and believe that Joey Porter's wrong
- 56:35about Ben Roethlisberger Probably knows something that we
- 56:38don't know. And I'm not saying Ben
- 56:40Roethlisberger is a good guy. I don't think any guy is a good
- 56:44guy when your teammates coming out and throwing you under the
- 56:46bus. But to say something like that
- 56:49on a podcast and when somebody can't protect himself, if you're
- 56:53a man, do it when Ben Roethlisberger is there.
- 56:56Go on his show and call him out on his show.
- 56:58Don't go on another show and throw a man under the bus.
- 57:01I'm looking forward to hear what Ben Roethlisberger has to say
- 57:04about Joey Porter and his personality because we all know
- 57:07what Joey Porter was as a player.
- 57:09He was first of all, cheap shot type of hitter.
- 57:12He talked a lot of crap. He spoke a lot, lot of crap
- 57:15about players on his own roster. And by the way, he's thrown
- 57:19coaches under the bus on that same roster on the Pittsburgh
- 57:22Steelers and now his own son is the starting corner on that
- 57:26roster. So I don't know if I'm going to
- 57:28take everything that Joey Porter said.
- 57:30Am I going to judge what he said about Ben Roethlisberger?
- 57:34We already know that Ben Roethlisberger is not a good guy
- 57:37after all the things that he's done on and off the the football
- 57:40field. So he's not, he's probably not
- 57:42lying. I just think it was the wrong
- 57:44platform to attack somebody that wasn't there to defend himself.
- 57:47We talked about it with the the Seahawks, with Russell Wilson
- 57:50versus the Legion of Boom and that whole locker room fallout.
- 57:53And we have a defense that was that good, like the steel the
- 57:56Steelers were even then, even before Mike Tumlin got there
- 57:58with Bill Cower. There was a lot of really good
- 58:00players on that team and obviously a lot of outspoken
- 58:03personalities on that team. In addition to Joey Porter, you
- 58:05also have guys like Ike Taylor, who said a lot of things since
- 58:08he retired and has joined NFL Network and a bunch of other
- 58:10platforms. Brian McFadden, who's the other
- 58:12opposite corner has been on CBS Sports and he's been pretty out
- 58:16there too. But Porter was the one that on
- 58:17that team that was kind of an instigator in his own right to
- 58:20Tommy and I were talking about the we were talking about him as
- 58:24a coach too, when he was an assistant coach under Tomlin in
- 58:27that Steelers Bengals playoff game.
- 58:28I believe it was Reggie Nelson was he was instigating on the
- 58:31sideline, I believe in the second quarter of that game.
- 58:34And so there was always a little bit of that bad blood going
- 58:38there. Now, I I get I'm going to
- 58:39believe the majority when it comes to Ben Roethlisberger
- 58:42obviously not being a good guy, which again, he obviously should
- 58:45have been suspended a lot longer than four games for those rape
- 58:47charges at the time, but the NFL wasn't really on the.
- 58:50And the Steelers were protected, Yeah.
- 58:52The NFL wasn't really on the let's suspend him for massive
- 58:55long periods of time really, until the domestic violence
- 58:57instances really piled up, starting with Ray Rice.
- 58:59What I don't understand is he came out, he said this is my
- 59:02quarterback and we tried to protect him.
- 59:04We tried to keep everything outside of the locker room,
- 59:07inside of the locker room. OK, then why are you speaking
- 59:10about it now? Why are you throwing this guy
- 59:12under the bus now that you're you're not even in the locker
- 59:15room anymore? You guys go now there's going to
- 59:18be times where the team's going to have special opportunity that
- 59:22that they're going to have. What do they call it?
- 59:24Anniversaries, where championship anniversaries.
- 59:27How is that going to work when you have Ben Roethlisberger, the
- 59:30quarterback, one of the leaders of the team going to actually go
- 59:34into a locker room or going to do an anniversary dinner with
- 59:37these guys that are speaking garbage and trash about them?
- 59:40I don't think it's going to work.
- 59:41I think it affects, you know, affects the anniversary thing.
- 59:44And I just don't think it's the right time to do it.
- 59:46Not at this time, not during the Super Bowl, not coming out on
- 59:50another podcast. If you're going to call somebody
- 59:52out, call him out on his own podcast, invite yourself on
- 59:56there and just have a a conversation with Ben.
- 59:58But listen, I don't think Ben is is a good person.
- 1:00:01I don't know him personally so I don't know, but I've heard
- 1:00:04through the Grapevine he's not very.
- 1:00:06Very good and it just comes from a different culture and and
- 1:00:09honestly, I I do believe that in Pittsburgh they allowed their
- 1:00:13players to do whatever the hell they wanted.
- 1:00:15Everybody says that Tomlin was a player's coach.
- 1:00:18Well, look at the bad players he's had on those teams in those
- 1:00:21organizations. Look at George Pickens, he goes
- 1:00:23to another organization. He's one of the best wide
- 1:00:25receivers in the NFL. He never got a chance to be that
- 1:00:29player with Mike Tomlin. He leaves.
- 1:00:31He is. So do you think it's the player
- 1:00:35or is it Mike Tomlin not be able to control his players with the
- 1:00:39different personalities in that locker room?
- 1:00:41That's all I'm. Saying yeah, I think the other
- 1:00:42thing too is Ben Roethlisberger also went to another extreme
- 1:00:44with Tomlin. I think a lot of the younger
- 1:00:46players are going to defend him more.
- 1:00:47Porter was one that played with Coward too, so he obviously
- 1:00:52played with Tomlin. But again, he still has the
- 1:00:53allegiance of the previous regime too.
- 1:00:55And a lot of the, I think the most outspoken ones against Ben
- 1:00:59Roethlisberger have been all those like the, I guess the
- 1:01:01nuttiest of the nuts with Antonio Brown, with Le'veon
- 1:01:05Bell, Even Rashard Mendenhall, we talked about another story
- 1:01:07with him like 3 years ago was saying something sexist too.
- 1:01:10Like those are the ones that have been the most against Ben
- 1:01:13Roethlisberger. On the offensive side, I think
- 1:01:15Porter's kind of the leader of that on the defensive side.
- 1:01:17But I think there is a little bit of a generational guy.
- 1:01:18But like you said, if there's any ever an anniversary for that
- 1:01:21Super Bowl team, it's going to be very awkward.
- 1:01:23Do you think that he even gives a crap what these guys think of
- 1:01:26him? I, I probably not, but I, I
- 1:01:29think if I was Ben Roethlisberger and I was a part
- 1:01:31of this Pittsburgh Steelers greatness for so many years and
- 1:01:35I was the face of that greatness, I'm not going to sit
- 1:01:38here and listen to Joey Porter speak bad about me.
- 1:01:41I'm a Hall of Famer, not you, Joey.
- 1:01:43I'm going to be, I'm going to be, I'm going to be inducted
- 1:01:46into Canton. You're not Why?
- 1:01:48Why is anybody going to listen to you when I was the superstar
- 1:01:51player of that a team in that organization for so many great
- 1:01:54years. So and without Joey Porter or
- 1:01:56with Joey Porter, they weren't a championship team.
- 1:01:59If Ben Roethlisberger wasn't there, they don't win the
- 1:02:02championships or the championship.
- 1:02:05The first championship really had nothing to do with him, but
- 1:02:07the second one had everything to do with Ben Roethlisberger.
- 1:02:09So I, I just, I, I think Joey Porter did it in a way where I
- 1:02:14think it's, I think he stabbed him in the back.
- 1:02:17I think that was the wrong way of doing it.
- 1:02:19If you're going to call somebody out, you know, Ben
- 1:02:21Roethlisberger has a podcast. Invite yourself on and ask him,
- 1:02:25call him out. He's like, do you think you are
- 1:02:27a good teammate? Ben will tell you the truth.
- 1:02:29And, and, and that might have been more interesting to see how
- 1:02:33they would react against each other than him going on another
- 1:02:36podcast and throwing the man under the bus where he has no
- 1:02:39way of protecting himself. I hate that because I've heard,
- 1:02:42and I'm going to say this truthfully, I have listened to
- 1:02:46other podcasts, people that I know that have thrown me under
- 1:02:48the bus, thrown me under the bus and I've listened to it.
- 1:02:52I never took a shot at them at any point of their careers.
- 1:02:56They came out and took a shot at me and nonchalantly and thought
- 1:03:00that I wasn't going to hear it and now I can throw them under
- 1:03:04the bus and attack him. Now do I think that was foul?
- 1:03:06Absolutely. Why?
- 1:03:08If you have something to say about me, come on my show.
- 1:03:10But you don't have the balls to come on this show because you
- 1:03:12know what's going to happen if you do.
- 1:03:14I'm going to counter on you and I'm going to call you out on
- 1:03:16everything that you said. So I unfortunately, some guys
- 1:03:21hide behind a mic and others don't need to hide up behind a
- 1:03:24mic. They'll say what they feel.
- 1:03:26I think Ben would have loved to attack or even go back and forth
- 1:03:32with a guy like Joey Porter in person on a mic.
- 1:03:35I just don't important. I think Joey Porter was foul
- 1:03:38doing it the way he did it. That's all.
- 1:03:39I'm going to say thank you to all the fans on Spotify and
