• 0:40
SPEAKER_00: Speak with confidence, change perceptions, and you change your work prospects.
• 0:45

SPEAKER_00: Firstly, say less and make what you say count.
• 1:00
SPEAKER_00: Secondly, use clear structures to make what you communicate clear.
• 1:05
SPEAKER_00: Third, be explicit for clearer communication.
• 1:08
SPEAKER_00: Fourth, create emotional predictability for your audience.

• 1:20
SPEAKER_00: Towards the end I share the six best actions I know to build your speaking and communicating confidence.
• 1:26
SPEAKER_00: To increase your communication expertise, you must practice these actions.
• 1:31
SPEAKER_00: Practice is what will make you more successful.
• 1:34
SPEAKER_00: Getting into the habit is putting those actions into practice every single day at work.
• 1:40
SPEAKER_00: I used to be rubbish at communicating clearly.
• 1:43
SPEAKER_00: I would get very nervous, you know, lose my train of thought and wish I was somewhere else.
• 1:49
SPEAKER_00: I hated talking to groups of more than one.
• 1:52
SPEAKER_00: I used each of these habits that I'm sharing today, and they massively improve my communication skills.
• 1:58
SPEAKER_00: You can do exactly the same.
• 2:01
SPEAKER_00: Start taking action today to create better habits for clearer speaking.
• 2:06
SPEAKER_00: The first habit to speak clearly is to say less and make what you say count.
• 2:12
SPEAKER_00: Have you been in meetings where several people are going backwards and forth with different views?
• 2:17
SPEAKER_00: And then a person who has been listening carefully speaks up clearly and confidently, and the rest of the room stops to listen.
• 2:25
SPEAKER_00: That person doesn't say a lot, yet everyone listens and thinks about what they have said.
• 2:31
SPEAKER_00: Often their insights sway the discussion or the direction of the group.
• 2:35
SPEAKER_00: Just think about why that person commands attention for the rest.
• 2:40
SPEAKER_00: Most people talk too much.
• 2:43
SPEAKER_00: The more time they spend trying to explain their point of view, the more detail they add, the more they sound insecure.
• 2:50
SPEAKER_00: The more they speak, the less clear their communication becomes.
• 2:54
SPEAKER_00: Their audience tunes out, no longer really listening.
• 2:57
  SPEAKER_00: Have you noticed that?
• 2:59
SPEAKER_00: To speak clearly, say less.
• 3:02
SPEAKER_00: The other person has a lot less to hear, less to take in and less to understand.
• 3:07
SPEAKER_00: Their brain has less work to do.
• 3:10
SPEAKER_00: The result, your message goes in.
• 3:13
SPEAKER_00: Condense your core message down to one clear point.
• 3:17
  SPEAKER_00: Finish that point.
• 3:19
SPEAKER_00: Make sure it lands and is understood by your audience.
• 3:22
SPEAKER_00: Then move on to the next key point if needed.
• 3:26
SPEAKER_00: Say less for clearer communication.
• 3:30
SPEAKER_00: My name is Jess Coles.

• 3:58
SPEAKER_00: The second habit for clearer communication is to use clear structures for what you communicate.
• 4:06
SPEAKER_00: When you need to speak, don't jump in and start speaking.
• 4:10
SPEAKER_00: Take a moment to collect your thoughts and structure what you're going to say.
• 4:15
  SPEAKER_00: Then speak coherently.
• 4:17
SPEAKER_00: Don't speak first and force your brain to try to catch up with the structuring part.
• 4:22
SPEAKER_00: You will ramble or waffle.
• 4:24
SPEAKER_00: Structure is essential for how to express yourself clearly at work.
• 4:29
SPEAKER_00: A really simple communication structure is CPA.
• 4:33
SPEAKER_00: Firstly, provide the context or the why.
• 4:36
SPEAKER_00: Secondly, communicate your key point.
• 4:39
SPEAKER_00: And third, ask for actions.
• 4:43
  SPEAKER_00: An example.
• 4:44
SPEAKER_00: We lost about£25,000 on average over each of the last six months on three of our older products.
• 4:53
SPEAKER_00: I am proposing we stop producing those products as we have not been able to cut costs significantly.
• 4:59
SPEAKER_00: I would like your permission to stop producing these three products.
• 5:03
SPEAKER_00: You don't need to say any more.
• 5:05
SPEAKER_00: Practice being comfortable with silence.
• 5:09
SPEAKER_00: Wait until you get permission, or they ask a question.
• 5:14
SPEAKER_00: My son, who's only 11, often speaks up with a comment.
• 5:18
SPEAKER_00: It is really well said, clear and confident.
• 5:21
SPEAKER_00: I still have no idea what he's talking about because he misses out providing the context.
• 5:27
SPEAKER_00: Always make the context or the why clear and link it to the point that you're making.
• 5:34
SPEAKER_00: Everything you communicate should have a clear beginning, middle and end.
• 5:39
SPEAKER_00: Structure is vital for how to express your thoughts clearly.
• 5:44
SPEAKER_00: The third habit for clearer communication is to be explicit.
• 5:49
SPEAKER_00: Great communicators are very explicit when they communicate or speak.
• 5:53
SPEAKER_00: They say exactly what they want or what they mean.
• 5:56
  SPEAKER_00: They are direct.
• 5:58
SPEAKER_00: They don't leave room for interpretation.
• 6:00
SPEAKER_00: They don't hedge their message.
• 6:02
SPEAKER_00: They don't include distracting emotional language or baggage.
• 6:05
SPEAKER_00: They don't ask for permission.
• 6:07
SPEAKER_00: They choose their words carefully.
• 6:10
SPEAKER_00: They choose simple over complex.
• 6:12
SPEAKER_00: They use everyday language, not jargon.
• 6:16
SPEAKER_00: They make it as easy as possible for you, their audience, to understand their message.
• 6:21
SPEAKER_00: Those who are not as good at communicating do the opposite of these traits we've just talked about.
• 6:28
SPEAKER_00: Or they don't do them as well as they could.
• 6:31
SPEAKER_00: Being a good communicator is a journey.
• 6:34
SPEAKER_00: When I became a leader for the first time, I didn't start off communicating well.
• 6:38
  SPEAKER_00: I did a lot badly.
• 6:40
SPEAKER_00: I would be indirect, hedge my message, use unclear wording and more.
• 6:45
SPEAKER_00: I was worried that others would be upset if I was direct and fully honest.
• 6:49
SPEAKER_00: As I practiced communicating more explicitly and honestly to my team members, including the bad stuff, I noticed something strange.
• 6:56
SPEAKER_00: The more direct and honest I got, the happier they became.
• 7:00
SPEAKER_00: Their trust in me went up.
• 7:02
  SPEAKER_00: They relaxed.
• 7:03
SPEAKER_00: I became even more direct.
• 7:05
SPEAKER_00: Their response was even more positive.
• 7:08
  SPEAKER_00: Why?
• 7:09
  SPEAKER_00: Team members want clarity.
• 7:11
SPEAKER_00: They want to know where they stand.
• 7:14
  SPEAKER_00: They want certainty.
• 7:15
SPEAKER_00: The more explicitly and honestly you communicate, the more they get what they want and need.
• 7:22
  SPEAKER_00: Be explicit and direct.
• 7:25
SPEAKER_00: The fourth habit to speak clearly is to create emotional predictability for your audience.
• 7:32
  SPEAKER_00: Humans are emotional.
• 7:33
SPEAKER_00: We all have our ups and downs.
• 7:36
SPEAKER_00: When we show emotional states or behaviors that are not aligned to what we are saying to our audience, our message gets lost.
• 7:45
SPEAKER_00: Their brains are so focused on dealing with their reactions to our emotions they don't have the energy to take in our message.
• 7:52
  SPEAKER_00: A quick example.
• 7:54
SPEAKER_00: I asked a colleague politely to help me with something.
• 7:58
SPEAKER_00: He literally exploded, shouting with anger.
• 8:01
SPEAKER_00: I have no idea what he actually said.
• 8:04
SPEAKER_00: All I remember was what appeared to be a totally random amount of anger coming from him.
• 8:09
SPEAKER_00: My opinion of him in that moment plummeted.
• 8:13
SPEAKER_00: I later found out that his girlfriend was giving him problems, and I unluckily spoke to him at a really bad moment.
• 8:19
SPEAKER_00: As a leader or manager, you can't afford these sorts of lapses.
• 8:23
SPEAKER_00: Teams expect you to be able to regulate your emotions with them.
• 8:27
SPEAKER_00: Emotional control is part of being responsible for leading others.
• 8:31
SPEAKER_00: Your credibility depends upon it.
• 8:34
SPEAKER_00: Before communicating, check your own emotions.
• 8:37
SPEAKER_00: Take deep breaths, calm yourself down.
• 8:39
SPEAKER_00: Think positive thoughts, get yourself into a calm, emotionally stable place before speaking.
• 8:45
SPEAKER_00: When you speak, if you show emotions, make sure they align with your message.
• 8:49
SPEAKER_00: For example, when your team hits targets for the week, show your excitement and happiness.
• 8:55
SPEAKER_00: When you're giving bad news, use a quieter, calmer, sympathetic voice.
• 9:01
SPEAKER_00: Align the emotions you display with your message.
• 9:04
SPEAKER_00: Project a calm and in control person when you communicate as a manager or leader.
• 9:11
SPEAKER_00: The fifth habit for clearer communication is to practice well to perform well.
• 9:16
SPEAKER_00: And I've got six actions to build confidence to do just that.
• 9:20
SPEAKER_00: It is very easy to say be more confident when you speak, and pretty hard to actually speak confidently, especially when every eye in the room is watching you.
• 9:31
  SPEAKER_00: Confidence is earned.
• 9:33
SPEAKER_00: Confidence is the result of speaking well and communicating clearly.
• 9:37
SPEAKER_00: I am sharing some of the best tips I know to build your skills and with those skills your confidence.
• 9:43
SPEAKER_00: Firstly, access conviction through purpose.
• 9:47
SPEAKER_00: When you speak with no purpose, it is hard to be confident.
• 9:52
SPEAKER_00: Be clear in your mind what your purpose is before communicating.
• 9:56
SPEAKER_00: Be committed to your purpose.
• 9:58
SPEAKER_00: For example, my purpose of speaking is to help you communicate more clearly to all those around you.
• 10:04
SPEAKER_00: Secondly, don't make your communication about you.
• 10:08
SPEAKER_00: You should be focused on your audience.
• 10:11
SPEAKER_00: You're speaking to give them something.
• 10:14
SPEAKER_00: Knowledge, insights, skills, directions, actions, etc.
• 10:18
SPEAKER_00: Focus on your audience and stop all the me, me, me thoughts.
• 10:22
SPEAKER_00: What do they think of me?
• 10:24
SPEAKER_00: Please don't make me look silly, etc.
• 10:27
SPEAKER_00: That we all have going through our minds.
• 10:30
SPEAKER_00: Third, construct your message carefully.
• 10:33
SPEAKER_00: Write out what you want to say.
• 10:35
SPEAKER_00: Cut your message down into bullet points.
• 10:38
SPEAKER_00: Speak your message, refine and cut down again.
• 10:41
  SPEAKER_00: Repeat.
• 10:42
SPEAKER_00: Keep practicing this, and you'll be able to do it all in your head in a few seconds for shorter messages, answers to questions, etc.
• 10:51
SPEAKER_00: Fourth, practice speaking out loud with your audience in mind.
• 10:56
  SPEAKER_00: Don't hold back.
• 10:57
SPEAKER_00: Speak as if you had that audience in front of you.
• 11:00
SPEAKER_00: Picture a full meeting room, all those attentive, expectant faces looking at you.
• 11:05
SPEAKER_00: Practice with the same volume, energy, pace, etc.
• 11:09
SPEAKER_00: as you want to speak to your actual audience.
• 11:12
SPEAKER_00: Go through your full speech at least five times in this way.
• 11:16
SPEAKER_00: Fifth, turn nervousness into excitement.
• 11:19
SPEAKER_00: The physical reactions you have in your body when you are nervous are exactly the same as when you are excited.
• 11:26
SPEAKER_00: Train your mind to recognize those signs as excitement, not nerves, by telling yourself over and over you feel excited when you have those sensations and feelings.
• 11:38
SPEAKER_00: Start small and build up.
• 11:40
SPEAKER_00: Practice in front of two people, then in practice in front of four, then in a small meeting room.
• 11:46
SPEAKER_00: When you feel confident, speak to bigger audiences and repeat.
• 11:50
SPEAKER_00: Get used to the emotions and physical reactions going through you.
• 11:53
SPEAKER_00: These don't really change much.
• 11:55
SPEAKER_00: Your control and management of those feelings does improve.
• 12:00
SPEAKER_00: The better you practice all these tips, the better you'll perform.
• 12:04
SPEAKER_00: Make your practice as good as you practically can.
• 12:08
SPEAKER_00: Getting clearer communication and speaking more clearly builds your confidence.
• 12:13
SPEAKER_00: The more confidence you have, the more attention you will command.
• 12:19
SPEAKER_00: So, in summary, I used to be rubbish at communicating clearly.
• 12:23
SPEAKER_00: You are very unlikely to be as bad as I was.
