- 0:00[SPEAKER_00]: Attention!
- 0:01[SPEAKER_00]: I have great news friends.
- 0:03[SPEAKER_00]: You, in fact, don't need to have a perfect life to be a great coach, and you can actually start coaching no matter how much you've been through.
- 0:11[SPEAKER_00]: No matter what messy middle parts of your life there have been, if you have the will to help people, if you desire to change people's lives, if you have the desire to use your story for good to turn any type of pain into purpose or struggle into success, you are in the exact right place.
- 0:26[SPEAKER_00]: If we haven't met before, my name's Liv Chapman and the co-founder and CEO of IGC Coaching School, we've been training and certifying ICF credentialed coaches for 11 plus years.
- 0:36[SPEAKER_00]: I've been in the coaching industry for 13.
- 0:37[SPEAKER_00]: I'm really aging myself, but before all of this, I was an extremely burnt out public school teacher who just kept trying to do what I'm supposed to do.
- 0:46[SPEAKER_00]: In order to find happiness, fulfillment, contentment, I went to college to become a teacher because my parent said it was a good idea.
- 0:54[SPEAKER_00]: I stayed teaching because you should just be grateful to have a job.
- 0:58[SPEAKER_00]: Then I decided I wanted more, so what is the natural next step without ever thinking about it?
- 1:03[SPEAKER_00]: I asked all my colleagues.
- 1:04[SPEAKER_00]: I said, what should I do if I really want to grow an education?
- 1:07[SPEAKER_00]: You should become a principal.
- 1:08[SPEAKER_00]: So I went and got my master's to become a principal and then I started the process of getting into a leadership position in the schools and thank God I met a coach when I did because she was the first person ever in the history of Olivia to ask me what do you actually want.
- 1:23[SPEAKER_00]: And I was like, not this, not this.
- 1:26[SPEAKER_00]: And so as I started the journey on my own coaching path, I started to really uncover who I was and what I wanted when you strip away all of what society tells you who you are and who you just want and what you should want to do.
- 1:38[SPEAKER_00]: And I started realizing,
- 1:41[SPEAKER_00]: By doing a full-on audit of my life, which I can get into in another episode, that I really, really wanted to have a greater impact.
- 1:49[SPEAKER_00]: I wanted to be able to teach in a way that was meaningful.
- 1:52[SPEAKER_00]: I wanted to be able to be inspiring and use stories and use real life to help people actually change their lives.
- 1:58[SPEAKER_00]: I was so burnt out and felt so broken and like I had wasted my time, I had wasted my degree, I had wasted my money on all this education that I no longer needed.
- 2:08[SPEAKER_00]: But instead of staying in that place, I decided to pursue coaching and I decided to pursue using my talents and my education, what a privilege to be able to do what you want to do.
- 2:18[SPEAKER_00]: I know that as a factor here, but I also want to tell you how you can use
- 2:23[SPEAKER_00]: the privilege that you may have from overcoming, from getting through things, from being dealt to really sometimes crappy hand and deciding that you're going to do something with the cards you are dealt.
- 2:36[SPEAKER_00]: And if you're here watching this video, maybe you haven't had that much crazy stuff happen.
- 2:40[SPEAKER_00]: That's okay, too.
- 2:41[SPEAKER_00]: But maybe you have, and you want to figure out what can I actually do to alcoholize all of these things that I've been through into a career that's meaningful, into a life that's meaningful.
- 2:52[SPEAKER_00]: Alright, so you know a little bit about my story, I got into career coaching.
- 2:56[SPEAKER_00]: That was my very first kind of taste of coaching because I had been through this major career transition and I was young 20 something living in DC at the time, everybody was going through a major career transition all the time.
- 3:09[SPEAKER_00]: So that's really where I focused the initial part of my career on before coming into IGC and of course expanding on the education component here.
- 3:18[SPEAKER_00]: you want to think about what you're into, what your passions are, your purposes, all of that, and then also what a people actually need when it comes to coaching.
- 3:29[SPEAKER_00]: And yes, I'm getting a little bit ahead of myself.
- 3:32[SPEAKER_00]: But here's the whole thing.
- 3:33[SPEAKER_00]: Your story has three parts.
- 3:35[SPEAKER_00]: you got to know them all.
- 3:37[SPEAKER_00]: And you got to really drill into which ones you actually believe you can have the greatest impact by sharing.
- 3:43[SPEAKER_00]: You do not need to share every crappy thing that happened to you in life, especially if you haven't even fully processed it yet.
- 3:49[SPEAKER_00]: I would leave that part out of the story for now, potentially.
- 3:53[SPEAKER_00]: But you want to identify the struggle.
- 3:55[SPEAKER_00]: What is something that you have been through?
- 3:57[SPEAKER_00]: And if you're watching this being like it's a ton of things,
- 4:01[SPEAKER_00]: Because a bunch of things does not turn into a coaching career, okay?
- 4:07[SPEAKER_00]: A very aligned focus that you are passionate about is going to be what finally makes things make sense.
- 4:15[SPEAKER_00]: Now, once you're rich in famous, you can dabble in all the different areas, but you want to really identify what you went through.
- 4:20[SPEAKER_00]: You need to identify the struggle, that's number one.
- 4:23[SPEAKER_00]: Number two, you need to figure out the shift.
- 4:26[SPEAKER_00]: What did it take to actually shift you?
- 4:31[SPEAKER_00]: How did things finally change for you?
- 4:34[SPEAKER_00]: Number three is the solution.
- 4:37[SPEAKER_00]: So what did you actually do to act differently?
- 4:40[SPEAKER_00]: How did things change for you?
- 4:42[SPEAKER_00]: If you can really zone in or get into those parts of your story, you're going to be able to use your story used this transformation to be able to sell coaching.
- 4:53[SPEAKER_00]: market coaching share about coaching lead people through a transformation.
- 4:57[SPEAKER_00]: Obviously, I'm a stand for training.
- 4:59[SPEAKER_00]: I believe that anyone that is influencing human life and decision making should be trained to do so, but you can absolutely use your story as a foundation for your coaching career by identifying those three things first.
- 5:13[SPEAKER_00]: If we're going back to my story, it was basically a story of burnout.
- 5:17[SPEAKER_00]: to setting boundaries and figuring out who I actually was and what I wanted, which resulted in a career pivot.
- 5:25[SPEAKER_00]: I was able to talk about that story over and over and over again, whether it was marketing or at an event or even to individual potential clients to share this transformation I went through and then how I helped people do the same.
- 5:38[SPEAKER_00]: So what you have to remember is that
- 5:42[SPEAKER_00]: People aren't paying for your past.
- 5:45[SPEAKER_00]: They're paying for the future you can help them create.
- 5:49[SPEAKER_00]: So while all of these stories in your past matters, we really want to extract the ones where you have gotten to a solution where you're currently embodying the change that you want to help other people with.
- 5:58[SPEAKER_00]: All right, so think about that for yourself because this is really what and I've talked about this so many times on this channel this is where your niche comes in what is this thing what is this problem that you can help people solve and how does your story play a role in that again your story is not theirs your story is meant to give you a little bit more meat for a little more meat on the bones out of us to say it's meant to give you a little baboum
- 6:28[SPEAKER_00]: but it's ultimately up to you to explain that because you are able to do this, you can also help other people and guide them through the service of coaching to be able to create a career pivot or to adapt to healthier lifestyle or find the love of their life or create a seven figure business or
- 6:48[SPEAKER_00]: nail their next job interview, or be a better parent, become a more patient person, regulate your nervous system.
- 6:57[SPEAKER_00]: Whatever that solution is, this is where your niche can also be found.
- 7:02[SPEAKER_00]: In other videos I've talked about my niche band diagram, your purpose, your passions, your personal and professional experience.
- 7:09[SPEAKER_00]: Plus, what people are willing to pay for?
- 7:11[SPEAKER_00]: A problem people are willing to pay to have solved in there in the middle if you know a band diagram.
- 7:16[SPEAKER_00]: Your niche is right there in the middle.
- 7:18[SPEAKER_00]: Again, you are using your story as a foundation for this.
- 7:22[SPEAKER_00]: Absolutely.
- 7:23[SPEAKER_00]: You are turning your story into your niche.
- 7:26[SPEAKER_00]: So...
- 7:27[SPEAKER_00]: You want to identify your lived experience and your expertise.
- 7:31[SPEAKER_00]: You want to figure out who needs this right now.
- 7:34[SPEAKER_00]: What problem are people going through that they're willing to pay to have solved right now?
- 7:39[SPEAKER_00]: And it doesn't have to be some like, airy, fairy, very intangible thing.
- 7:43[SPEAKER_00]: It can be something simple and I recommend that it is.
- 7:46[SPEAKER_00]: And I kind of went over some of those examples.
- 7:48[SPEAKER_00]: Health, wealth, love.
- 7:50[SPEAKER_00]: Those are things people pay for.
- 7:51[SPEAKER_00]: You have to think about the subcategories underneath, getting through a breakup, going through a divorce.
- 7:56[SPEAKER_00]: Co-parenting, parenting, familial relationships, finding the love of your life, getting engaged to 90 days.
- 8:06[SPEAKER_00]: And then, of course, wealth could be finding your first job, nailing a job, interview, updating or upgrading your resume.
- 8:14[SPEAKER_00]: Any type of coaching that's super niche specific like that, always in demand.
- 8:18[SPEAKER_00]: Obviously, starting a business, scaling a business, growing a business, anything like that.
- 8:22[SPEAKER_00]: And then, of course, the health piece is finding more peace, finding more calm, finding more joy, losing weight, regulating a nervous system, like I mentioned.
- 8:30[SPEAKER_00]: And you have to think, how does my story,
- 8:33[SPEAKER_00]: relate to one of these niches, one of these problems that people are willing to pay to have solved.
- 8:40[SPEAKER_00]: And you want to be super clear about what that solution looks like.
- 8:44[SPEAKER_00]: And think about your own story, how were you able to create those results?
- 8:49[SPEAKER_00]: And on the day-to-day, what were those results?
- 8:51[SPEAKER_00]: I understand there may be some self-doubt that comes with this to be totally honest with you.
- 8:56[SPEAKER_00]: I wouldn't have felt confident to do this either unless I went through a coach training program and I actually was observed and evaluated and I had got to practice and I knew what actual coaching skills were and how to do them with clients.
- 9:10[SPEAKER_00]: It's one thing to use your story.
- 9:11[SPEAKER_00]: to market and to create an offer which is kind of what I just walk you through like what kind of coaching you're actually going to sell.
- 9:18[SPEAKER_00]: But what do you actually do when you get on the phone or on the Zoom or in person with your client?
- 9:23[SPEAKER_00]: That is where actual coach training and practice come into play.
- 9:28[SPEAKER_00]: So if there's part of you that's doubting you could actually sell coaching, you really, really, really may want to consider getting a certification or getting some practice
- 9:39[SPEAKER_00]: it's absolutely normal.
- 9:40[SPEAKER_00]: I wouldn't sell any service that I didn't know that I was good at.
- 9:43[SPEAKER_00]: So you need some proof of concept for you to really feel confident in order to use your story to sell coaching.
- 9:49[SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to say that flat out, whether I own a training company or not, I would still as a consumer.
- 9:56[SPEAKER_00]: prefer someone who has had some type of training when it came to a high investment service that I was going to pay for.
- 10:04[SPEAKER_00]: I wouldn't hire an ads person that didn't have some type of ads training and extensive experience, right?
- 10:10[SPEAKER_00]: I wouldn't hire a massage person in either, right?
- 10:13[SPEAKER_00]: And I'm sure there's many services we can think of where we're like each, that feels a little bit risky.
- 10:19[SPEAKER_00]: And if you really want to charge premium rates for your coaching, a credential can also back that up.
- 10:24[SPEAKER_00]: So that's really what makes coaching also go from a hobby to a career.
- 10:28[SPEAKER_00]: You need to have some type of experiences or credentials or certification to have that weight and to be able to charge what your services worth.
- 10:38[SPEAKER_00]: Notice I did not say what you are worth, because your worth is infinite.
- 10:41[SPEAKER_00]: But the value of coaching right now North America averages around 297 per session for a trained and credentialed coach.
- 10:49[SPEAKER_00]: We suggest coaches start around 150 a session if they're in training, but if you really want to start professionally as a coach, you're going to use your story.
- 10:57[SPEAKER_00]: that is going to be your jump off point, you're going to get trained, you're going to get certified and you're going to be certain that the transformation that you experience for yourself can also be recreated with your future clients by being a really, really excellent coach.
- 11:13[SPEAKER_00]: So I hope this was helpful.
- 11:15[SPEAKER_00]: If you have a bunch of different stories and you're trying to figure out which one might be the best to hone in on, feel free to leave a comment.
