  there's

  an

  epic

  today
• 2:02
  because

  if

  you're
• 2:03
  a
• 2:03
  homeowner
• 2:03
  out
• 2:03
  there,

  you're

• 2:19
  It's

  good
• 2:20
  to

  you.
• 2:21
  This

  is

  gonna

  be
• 2:21
  a
• 2:22
  lot
• 2:22
  of
• 2:22
  fun
• 2:22
  and
• 2:22
  I
• 2:22
  love
• 2:23
  what
• 2:23
  you
• 2:23
  guys
• 2:23
  are
• 2:24
  doing.
• 2:24
  You
• 2:24
  guys
• 2:25
  are
• 2:26
  testing
• 2:26
  products
• 2:27
  and
• 2:27
  every
• 2:27
  company
• 2:28
  goes
• 2:28
  out
• 2:28
  and
• 2:28
  does
• 2:28
  their
• 2:28
  own
• 2:29
  testing
• 2:29
  of
• 2:29
  singular
• 2:30
  products,
• 2:30
  but
• 2:31
  you're
• 2:31
  putting.
• 2:31
  Systems
• 2:32
  together,
• 2:33
  you're
• 2:33
  putting
• 2:34
  homes
• 2:34
  together,
• 2:35
  you're.
• 2:35
  Blowing
• 2:35
  them
• 2:36
  down,
• 2:36
  you're
• 2:36
  burning
• 2:37
  them
• 2:37
  up
• 2:37
  and
• 2:37
  you
• 2:37
  guys
• 2:38
  are
• 2:38
  seeing
• 2:38
  what
• 2:38
  works
• 2:39
  and
• 2:39
  quite
• 2:39
  frankly,
• 2:39
  what
• 2:39
  doesn't.
• 2:40
  Yeah,
• 2:40
  that's
• 2:41
  our
• 2:41
  role
• 2:41
  at
• 2:41
  ibhs
• 2:42
  is
• 2:42
  to
• 2:42
  actually
• 2:42
  look
• 2:43
  at
• 2:43
  how
• 2:43
  the
• 2:44
  entire
• 2:44
  building
• 2:45
  system,
• 2:45
  whether
• 2:45
  it's
• 2:46
  commercial
• 2:46
  construction
• 2:47
  or
• 2:47
  just
• 2:47
  our
• 2:47
  homes,
• 2:48
  our
• 2:48
  single
• 2:48
  family
• 2:48
  homes
• 2:49
  or
• 2:49
  multifam
• 2:49
  family
• 2:50
  homes,
• 2:50
  apartment
• 2:51
  complexes
• 2:51
  that
• 2:52
  are
• 2:52
  built
• 2:52
  more
• 2:52
  commercial
• 2:53
  like,
• 2:53
  like
• 2:53
  how
• 2:53
  does
• 2:53
  that
• 2:54
  whole
• 2:54
  system
• 2:54
  work
• 2:54
  together,
• 2:55
  especially
• 2:56
  when
• 2:56
  it
• 2:56
  comes
• 2:56
  to
• 2:56
  things
• 2:57
  like
• 2:57
  our
• 2:57
  weather
• 2:57
  related
• 2:58
  hazards,
• 2:58
  whether
• 2:58
  that's
• 2:59
  severe
• 2:59
  weather,
• 2:59
  hurricanes,
• 3:00
  tornadoes,
• 3:01
  could
• 3:01
  be
• 3:01
  snowstorm.
• 3:02
  We
• 3:02
  talk
• 3:02
  some
• 3:02
  winter
• 3:03
  weather
• 3:03
  today
• 3:04
  and
• 3:04
  other
• 3:05
  things
• 3:05
  like
• 3:05
  wildfires
• 3:06
  as
• 3:06
  well.
• 3:06
  So
• 3:06
  how
• 3:06
  does
• 3:07
  our
• 3:07
  building
• 3:07
  system
• 3:08
  and
• 3:08
  how
• 3:08
  those
• 3:08
  pieces
• 3:09
  and
• 3:09
  parts
• 3:09
  actually
• 3:10
  interact
• 3:10
  to
• 3:10
  give
• 3:11
  us
• 3:11
  some
• 3:11
  of
• 3:11
  the
• 3:11
  really
• 3:12
  bad
• 3:12
  outcomes
• 3:13
  we
• 3:13
  unfortunately
• 3:14
  see
• 3:14
  repeatedly,
• 3:14
  but
• 3:15
  also
• 3:15
  what
• 3:15
  works,
• 3:16
  and
• 3:16
  I
• 3:16
  think
• 3:16
  that's
• 3:16
  a
• 3:16
  big
• 3:17
  part,
• 3:17
  is
• 3:17
  how
• 3:17
  do
• 3:17
  we
• 3:18
  get
• 3:18
  those
• 3:18
  practical
• 3:19
  solutions
• 3:19
  to
• 3:19
  everybody
• 3:20
  out
• 3:20
  there
• 3:21
  to
• 3:21
  start
• 3:21
  really
• 3:22
  taking
• 3:22
  a
• 3:22
  bite
• 3:22
  out
• 3:22
  of
• 3:22
  some
• 3:23
  of
• 3:23
  the
• 3:23
  damage
• 3:23
  and
• 3:23
  just
• 3:24
  really
• 3:24
  displacement
• 3:25
  that
• 3:25
  we
• 3:25
  see
• 3:26
  from
• 3:26
  these
• 3:26
  kind
• 3:26
  of
• 3:26
  things
• 3:27
  far
• 3:27
  too
• 3:27
  often.
• 3:28
  Well,
• 3:28
  it's
• 3:28
  funny,
• 3:29
  people
• 3:29
  go,
• 3:29
  hey,
• 3:29
  it
• 3:30
  doesn't
• 3:30
  matter
• 3:30
  if
• 3:30
  you're
• 3:30
  on
• 3:30
  the
• 3:30
  west
• 3:31
  coast
• 3:31
  or
• 3:31
  east
• 3:31
  coast
• 3:31
  or
• 3:31
  in
• 3:31
  the
• 3:32
  south
• 3:32
  and
• 3:32
  north,
• 3:32
  we
• 3:32
  all
• 3:33
  get
• 3:33
  wind
• 3:33
  storms
• 3:33
  from
• 3:33
  time
• 3:33
  to
• 3:34
  time.
• 3:34
  And
• 3:34
  out
• 3:35
  west
• 3:35
  here
• 3:35
  we
• 3:35
  get
• 3:35
  some
• 3:36
  of
• 3:36
  those
• 3:36
  that
• 3:36
  come
• 3:36
  in
• 3:36
  here
• 3:37
  that
• 3:37
  are
• 3:37
  just
• 3:37
  epic,
• 3:37
  where
• 3:38
  we'll
• 3:38
  get
• 3:38
  hurricane
• 3:38
  force
• 3:39
  winds.
• 3:40
  But
• 3:40
  building
• 3:40
  code
• 3:40
  sure
• 3:41
  doesn't
• 3:41
  address
• 3:41
  it
• 3:42
  either.
• 3:43
  So
• 3:43
  it's
• 3:43
  one
• 3:43
  of
• 3:43
  those
• 3:43
  things
• 3:44
  that
• 3:44
  it's
• 3:44
  up
• 3:44
  to
• 3:44
  the
• 3:45
  homeowner
• 3:45
  to
• 3:45
  deal
• 3:45
  with
• 3:46
  because
• 3:46
  most
• 3:46
  of
• 3:46
  the
• 3:46
  building
• 3:47
  community
• 3:47
  is
• 3:47
  still
• 3:47
  not
• 3:47
  doing
• 3:48
  it.
• 3:48
  And
• 3:49
  you'll
• 3:49
  have
• 3:49
  people
• 3:49
  going,
• 3:49
  oh
• 3:50
  man,
• 3:50
  I
• 3:50
  got
• 3:50
  this
• 3:51
  epic
• 3:51
  roof
• 3:51
  I
• 3:52
  put
• 3:52
  on
• 3:52
  and
• 3:52
  I
• 3:52
  put
• 3:52
  on
• 3:52
  the
• 3:53
  siding
• 3:53
  and
• 3:53
  then
• 3:53
  I
• 3:53
  go,
• 3:54
  how
• 3:54
  about
• 3:54
  that
• 3:54
  attached
• 3:55
  garage
• 3:55
  door?
• 3:55
  What'd
• 3:55
  you
• 3:56
  do
• 3:56
  there?
• 3:56
  And
• 3:57
  they
• 3:57
  go,
• 3:57
  oh,
• 3:57
  it's
• 3:57
  just
• 3:57
  a
• 3:58
  really
• 3:58
  cool
• 3:58
  little
• 3:58
  garage
• 3:59
  door.
• 3:59
  I'm
• 3:59
  like,
• 3:59
  is
• 4:00
  that
• 4:00
  rated?
• 4:01
  And
• 4:01
  there's
• 4:01
  so
• 4:02
  many
• 4:02
  pieces
• 4:02
  to
• 4:02
  this
• 4:02
  entire
• 4:03
  system.
• 4:03
  And
• 4:04
  that's
• 4:04
  what's
• 4:04
  cool
• 4:04
  about
• 4:05
  what
• 4:05
  you
• 4:05
  guys
• 4:05
  are
• 4:05
  doing
• 4:05
  is
• 4:06
  you
• 4:06
  guys
• 4:06
  go,
• 4:06
  okay,
• 4:07
  here's
• 4:07
  the
• 4:07
  weak
• 4:07
  points
• 4:08
  and
• 4:08
  how
• 4:09
  do
• 4:09
  we
• 4:09
  improve
• 4:09
  that?
• 4:10
  And
• 4:10
  hopefully
• 4:11
  on
• 4:11
  the
• 4:11
  west
• 4:11
  coast,
• 4:12
  we'll
• 4:12
  start
• 4:12
  dealing
• 4:12
  with
• 4:12
  some
• 4:13
  building
• 4:13
  code
• 4:13
  out
• 4:13
  here
• 4:13
  that's
• 4:13
  going
• 4:14
  to
• 4:14
  change
• 4:14
  some
• 4:14
  of
• 4:14
  that
• 4:15
  so
• 4:15
  we
• 4:15
  have
• 4:16
  more
• 4:16
  stronger
• 4:17
  homes
• 4:17
  and
• 4:17
  stuff
• 4:17
  like
• 4:18
  you
• 4:18
  guys
• 4:18
  do.
• 4:18
  They're
• 4:18
  fortified.
• 4:19
  Yeah.
• 4:19
  West
• 4:20
  coast
• 4:20
  windstorms,
• 4:20
  while
• 4:21
  they're
• 4:21
  not
• 4:21
  as
• 4:21
  frequent
• 4:22
  as
• 4:22
  say,
• 4:22
  we'd
• 4:23
  see
• 4:23
  big
• 4:23
  tropical
• 4:23
  events
• 4:24
  on
• 4:24
  the
• 4:24
  northern
• 4:24
  Gulf
• 4:25
  coast,
• 4:25
  we
• 4:25
  do
• 4:25
  have
• 4:25
  them.
• 4:26
  And
• 4:27
  I
• 4:27
  think
• 4:27
  one
• 4:28
  thing
• 4:28
  we've
• 4:28
  learned
• 4:28
  is
• 4:29
  that
• 4:29
  those
• 4:29
  events,
• 4:30
  especially
• 4:30
  in
• 4:30
  the
• 4:30
  western
• 4:31
  half
• 4:31
  of
• 4:31
  the
• 4:31
  US
• 4:31
  can
• 4:31
  expose
• 4:32
  issues
• 4:32
  with
• 4:32
  your
• 4:32
  roof
• 4:33
  system.
• 4:33
  Whether
• 4:33
  you
• 4:34
  have
• 4:34
  just
• 4:34
  an
• 4:34
  aged
• 4:34
  asphalt
• 4:35
  shingle
• 4:35
  and
• 4:36
  you
• 4:36
  didn't
• 4:36
  have
• 4:36
  a
• 4:36
  sealed
• 4:37
  roof
• 4:37
  deck
• 4:37
  underneath
• 4:38
  and
• 4:38
  all
• 4:38
  of
• 4:38
  a
• 4:38
  sudden
• 4:38
  you
• 4:38
  have
• 4:38
  a
• 4:38
  leak,
• 4:39
  right?
• 4:39
  Like,
• 4:40
  windstorm
• 4:40
  comes
• 4:41
  along,
• 4:41
  finally
• 4:41
  brings
• 4:42
  us
• 4:42
  some
• 4:42
  welcome
• 4:42
  rain.
• 4:43
  But
• 4:43
  all
• 4:43
  of
• 4:43
  a
• 4:43
  sudden
• 4:44
  we
• 4:44
  realize,
• 4:44
  oh,
• 4:44
  our
• 4:45
  roof
• 4:45
  system
• 4:45
  has
• 4:45
  had
• 4:46
  some
• 4:46
  issues
• 4:46
  that
• 4:46
  we
• 4:47
  didn'
• 4:47
  about.
• 4:48
  And
• 4:48
  that's
• 4:48
  one
• 4:48
  thing
• 4:48
  that
• 4:49
  happens
• 4:49
  in
• 4:49
  the
• 4:49
  western
• 4:50
  US
• 4:50
  is
• 4:50
  they
• 4:50
  get
• 4:50
  those
• 4:51
  big
• 4:51
  strong
• 4:51
  low
• 4:52
  pressure
• 4:52
  systems
• 4:52
  that
• 4:53
  move
• 4:53
  on
• 4:53
  shore
• 4:54
  and
• 4:54
  often
• 4:54
  do
• 4:55
  give
• 4:55
  us
• 4:55
  the
• 4:55
  welcome
• 4:55
  rain,
• 4:56
  but
• 4:56
  wind
• 4:57
  comes
• 4:57
  with
• 4:57
  it.
• 4:58
  And
• 4:58
  we've
• 4:58
  learned
• 4:58
  that
• 4:58
  it
• 4:59
  is
• 4:59
  a
• 4:59
  place
• 4:59
  where
• 5:00
  it
• 5:00
  will
• 5:00
  expose
• 5:01
  issues
• 5:01
  you
• 5:01
  may
• 5:02
  have
• 5:02
  with
• 5:02
  your
• 5:02
  roof
• 5:02
  system.
• 5:03
  And
• 5:03
  often
• 5:03
  that
• 5:04
  does
• 5:04
  manifest
• 5:04
  itself,
• 5:05
  unfortunately
• 5:05
  in
• 5:05
  leaks.
• 5:06
  Oh,
• 5:07
  yeah,
• 5:07
  it's
• 5:07
  that
• 5:08
  skylight
• 5:08
  leaking.
• 5:08
  It's
• 5:09
  that
• 5:09
  valley
• 5:10
  that
• 5:10
  you
• 5:10
  didn't
• 5:10
  think
• 5:10
  and
• 5:10
  it's
• 5:10
  just
• 5:10
  driving
• 5:11
  that
• 5:11
  rain
• 5:11
  way
• 5:11
  up
• 5:12
  underneath
• 5:12
  it.
• 5:13
  And
• 5:13
  that
• 5:13
  15
• 5:14
  pound
• 5:14
  felt
• 5:14
  that
• 5:14
  they
• 5:15
  used
• 5:15
  with
• 5:15
  no
• 5:15
  ice
• 5:15
  shield
• 5:16
  on
• 5:16
  that
• 5:16
  roof
• 5:17
  just
• 5:17
  doesn't
• 5:17
  have
• 5:17
  a
• 5:18
  chance.
• 5:18
  Yeah,
• 5:19
  that's
• 5:19
  right.
• 5:19
  Like
• 5:19
  if
• 5:19
  you're
• 5:20
  just
• 5:20
  looking
• 5:20
  at
• 5:20
  a
• 5:21
  typical
• 5:21
  underlayment
• 5:22
  without
• 5:22
  a
• 5:22
  sealed
• 5:22
  deck,
• 5:23
  that
• 5:23
  water
• 5:24
  is
• 5:24
  going
• 5:24
  to
• 5:24
  come
• 5:24
  in
• 5:24
  when
• 5:24
  the
• 5:25
  shingles
• 5:25
  fail.
• 5:25
  Like
• 5:26
  it's
• 5:26
  just
• 5:26
  a
• 5:26
  given,
• 5:27
  it's
• 5:27
  almost
• 5:27
  a
• 5:28
  certainty.
• 5:28
  And
• 5:28
  that's
• 5:28
  one
• 5:28
  of
• 5:28
  the
• 5:28
  things,
• 5:29
  big
• 5:29
  things
• 5:29
  that
• 5:29
  we
• 5:30
  advocate
• 5:30
  in
• 5:30
  terms
• 5:31
  of
• 5:31
  co
• 5:31
  development
• 5:32
  is
• 5:32
  to
• 5:32
  try
• 5:33
  to
• 5:33
  get
• 5:33
  that
• 5:33
  sealed
• 5:33
  roof
• 5:34
  deck
• 5:34
  in
• 5:34
  across
• 5:34
  the
• 5:34
  whole
• 5:35
  United
• 5:35
  States.
• 5:35
  It
• 5:36
  can
• 5:36
  work
• 5:36
  in
• 5:36
  all
• 5:37
  sorts
• 5:37
  of
• 5:37
  places.
• 5:37
  Whether
• 5:38
  we're
• 5:38
  talking
• 5:38
  about
• 5:38
  the
• 5:38
  west
• 5:39
  coast
• 5:39
  and
• 5:39
  their
• 5:39
  windstorms.
• 5:40
  We
• 5:40
  got
• 5:41
  the
• 5:41
  central
• 5:41
  US
• 5:41
  that
• 5:41
  deals
• 5:42
  with
• 5:42
  thunderstorm
• 5:42
  wind
• 5:43
  events
• 5:43
  and
• 5:43
  obviously
• 5:44
  heavy
• 5:44
  rain
• 5:44
  and
• 5:44
  hail
• 5:45
  that
• 5:45
  come
• 5:45
  with
• 5:45
  that.
• 5:45
  And
• 5:46
  then
• 5:46
  everybody
• 5:46
  is
• 5:47
  finally
• 5:47
  realized
• 5:47
  on
• 5:47
  the
• 5:48
  hurricane
• 5:48
  coast,
• 5:49
  like
• 5:49
  hey,
• 5:50
  this
• 5:50
  can
• 5:50
  like
• 5:50
  lop
• 5:51
  off
• 5:51
  a
• 5:51
  lot
• 5:52
  of
• 5:52
  that
• 5:52
  interior
• 5:53
  water
• 5:53
  damage
• 5:53
  that
• 5:54
  comes
• 5:54
  through
• 5:54
  your
• 5:54
  roof
• 5:55
  when
• 5:55
  your
• 5:55
  shingles
• 5:56
  fail.
• 5:56
  And
• 5:57
  we
• 5:57
  have
• 5:57
  made
• 5:58
  a
• 5:58
  heck
• 5:58
  of
• 5:58
  a
• 5:58
  lot
• 5:58
  of
• 5:58
  progress
• 5:59
  over
• 5:59
  there
• 5:59
  and
• 6:00
  getting
• 6:00
  things
• 6:00
  like
• 6:00
  that
• 6:00
  into
• 6:01
  code,
• 6:01
  whereas
• 6:02
  we
• 6:02
  still
• 6:02
  got
• 6:02
  some
• 6:02
  catch
• 6:02
  up
• 6:03
  to
• 6:03
  do
• 6:03
  in
• 6:03
  the
• 6:03
  rest
• 6:03
  of
• 6:04
  the
• 6:04
  country.
• 6:05
  Yeah,
• 6:05
  it's
• 6:05
  amazing.
• 6:05
  We
• 6:05
  just
• 6:06
  put
• 6:06
  a
• 6:06
  roof
• 6:06
  on
• 6:07
  my
• 6:07
  brother's
• 6:07
  beach
• 6:07
  house
• 6:08
  that
• 6:08
  we
• 6:08
  were
• 6:08
  working
• 6:08
  on
• 6:08
  out
• 6:08
  in
• 6:09
  Cannon
• 6:09
  beach
• 6:09
  in
• 6:10
  Oregon
• 6:10
  here
• 6:10
  and
• 6:10
  it's
• 6:10
  a
• 6:11
  block
• 6:11
  off
• 6:11
  the
• 6:11
  water,
• 6:12
  it's
• 6:12
  got
• 6:12
  some
• 6:12
  good
• 6:13
  protection.
• 6:13
  But
• 6:13
  they
• 6:13
  still
• 6:14
  this
• 6:15
  time
• 6:15
  of
• 6:15
  year
• 6:15
  in
• 6:15
  the
• 6:15
  fall
• 6:16
  and
• 6:16
  the
• 6:16
  winter
• 6:16
  they
• 6:17
  routinely
• 6:17
  have,
• 6:18
  every
• 6:18
  other
• 6:18
  week
• 6:19
  they'll
• 6:19
  have
• 6:19
  70,
• 6:19
  80
• 6:19
  mile
• 6:20
  an
• 6:20
  hour
• 6:20
  winds
• 6:20
  out
• 6:20
  there
• 6:20
  and
• 6:21
  it
• 6:21
  just
• 6:21
  happens.
• 6:21
  And
• 6:21
  so
• 6:22
  we
• 6:22
  put
• 6:22
  a
• 6:22
  new
• 6:22
  roof
• 6:22
  on
• 6:23
  it
• 6:23
  out
• 6:23
  there
• 6:23
  and
• 6:24
  we
• 6:24
  basically
• 6:24
  put
• 6:24
  ice
• 6:25
  and
• 6:25
  water
• 6:25
  shield
• 6:26
  on
• 6:26
  the
• 6:26
  entire
• 6:27
  roof
• 6:27
  surface
• 6:27
  up
• 6:28
  there
• 6:28
  just
• 6:29
  to
• 6:29
  make
• 6:29
  sure
• 6:29
  that
• 6:29
  we
• 6:29
  can
• 6:29
  control
• 6:30
  that
• 6:30
  water
• 6:30
  underneath
• 6:31
  it.
• 6:31
  And
• 6:31
  if
• 6:31
  we
• 6:31
  did
• 6:31
  lose
• 6:31
  shingles,
• 6:32
  we
• 6:33
  have
• 6:33
  half
• 6:33
  a
• 6:33
  chance
• 6:33
  of
• 6:33
  not
• 6:34
  having
• 6:34
  massive
• 6:34
  water
• 6:35
  damage.
• 6:36
  Now
• 6:36
  if
• 6:36
  we
• 6:36
  would
• 6:36
  have
• 6:36
  been
• 6:37
  resheating
• 6:37
  it,
• 6:37
  I
• 6:38
  probably
• 6:38
  would
• 6:38
  have
• 6:38
  looked
• 6:39
  at
• 6:39
  something
• 6:39
  like
• 6:40
  gone
• 6:40
  going
• 6:40
  on
• 6:41
  with
• 6:41
  a
• 6:41
  system
• 6:41
  like
• 6:42
  Huber
• 6:42
  or
• 6:42
  one
• 6:43
  of
• 6:43
  those
• 6:43
  other
• 6:43
  guys
• 6:43
  out
• 6:44
  there.
• 6:44
  I
• 6:44
  think,
• 6:44
  geez,
• 6:45
  I'm
• 6:45
  think
• 6:45
  GP
• 6:46
  has
• 6:46
  one
• 6:46
  too.
• 6:46
  But
• 6:47
  there's
• 6:47
  more
• 6:47
  systems
• 6:48
  like
• 6:48
  that
• 6:48
  coming
• 6:48
  out
• 6:49
  which
• 6:49
  just
• 6:49
  gives
• 6:50
  you
• 6:50
  that
• 6:50
  durability
• 6:51
  if
• 6:51
  something
• 6:52
  bad
• 6:52
  happens.
• 6:53
  Yeah,
• 6:53
  the
• 6:53
  Huber
• 6:53
  zip
• 6:54
  system
• 6:54
  is
• 6:54
  probably
• 6:54
  the
• 6:54
  one
• 6:55
  that
• 6:55
  people
• 6:55
  recognize
• 6:56
  the
• 6:56
  most
• 6:56
  from
• 6:57
  a
• 6:57
  branding
• 6:57
  system.
• 6:58
  But
• 6:58
  again
• 6:58
  it's
• 6:58
  got
• 6:59
  the
• 6:59
  built
• 6:59
  in
• 6:59
  tape
• 7:00
  seams.
• 7:00
  We
• 7:01
  did
• 7:01
  something
• 7:01
  similar
• 7:02
  here
• 7:02
  in
• 7:02
  my
• 7:02
  house.
• 7:03
  We
• 7:03
  built
• 7:03
  it,
• 7:03
  we
• 7:04
  did
• 7:04
  the
• 7:04
  ice
• 7:04
  and
• 7:04
  water
• 7:05
  showed
• 7:05
  as
• 7:05
  a
• 7:05
  peel
• 7:05
  and
• 7:05
  stick
• 7:06
  membrane
• 7:06
  across
• 7:06
  the
• 7:07
  whole
• 7:07
  thing.
• 7:07
  And
• 7:07
  our
• 7:07
  builder
• 7:07
  said,
• 7:08
  hey,
• 7:08
  like
• 7:08
  hey,
• 7:09
  we
• 7:09
  just
• 7:09
  Started
• 7:09
  doing
• 7:10
  this
• 7:10
  because
• 7:10
  it's
• 7:10
  just
• 7:11
  easier
• 7:11
  to
• 7:11
  do
• 7:11
  anyway
• 7:12
  way.
• 7:12
  And
• 7:12
  that
• 7:13
  gives
• 7:13
  us
• 7:13
  that
• 7:13
  sealed
• 7:13
  deck
• 7:14
  protection.
• 7:14
  But
• 7:14
  yeah,
• 7:14
  you
• 7:14
  talk
• 7:15
  about
• 7:15
  out
• 7:15
  on
• 7:15
  the
• 7:15
  west
• 7:16
  coast,
• 7:16
  it
• 7:17
  doesn't
• 7:17
  take,
• 7:17
  especially
• 7:17
  with
• 7:18
  an
• 7:18
  aged
• 7:19
  asphalt
• 7:19
  route,
• 7:19
  50,
• 7:20
  60
• 7:20
  mile
• 7:20
  an
• 7:20
  hour
• 7:20
  winds
• 7:21
  and
• 7:21
  you're
• 7:21
  going
• 7:21
  to
• 7:21
  start
• 7:22
  peeling
• 7:22
  up
• 7:22
  unsealed
• 7:23
  shingles
• 7:23
  and
• 7:24
  that
• 7:24
  unfortunate
• 7:25
  cascade
• 7:25
  can
• 7:26
  start.
• 7:26
  So
• 7:26
  all
• 7:26
  the
• 7:26
  things
• 7:26
  we've
• 7:27
  learned
• 7:27
  in
• 7:27
  other
• 7:28
  high
• 7:28
  wind
• 7:28
  areas
• 7:29
  can
• 7:30
  actually
• 7:30
  apply
• 7:30
  in
• 7:31
  a
• 7:31
  whole
• 7:31
  lot,
• 7:31
  really
• 7:32
  across
• 7:32
  the
• 7:33
  entire
• 7:33
  United
• 7:33
  States.
• 7:34
  We
• 7:34
  just
• 7:35
  got
• 7:35
  to
• 7:35
  start
• 7:35
  talking
• 7:36
  about
• 7:36
  it
• 7:36
  and
• 7:37
  telling
• 7:37
  folks,
• 7:37
  hey,
• 7:37
  this
• 7:37
  is
• 7:38
  a
• 7:38
  path.
• 7:38
  It's
• 7:39
  pretty.
• 7:39
  This
• 7:39
  is
• 7:39
  one
• 7:40
  of
• 7:40
  the
• 7:40
  most
• 7:40
  economical
• 7:41
  roof
• 7:42
  things
• 7:42
  you
• 7:42
  can
• 7:42
  do.
• 7:43
  And
• 7:43
  then
• 7:43
  when
• 7:43
  you
• 7:44
  look
• 7:44
  at
• 7:44
  the
• 7:44
  damage
• 7:44
  that
• 7:45
  comes
• 7:45
  when
• 7:45
  water
• 7:45
  comes
• 7:46
  in
• 7:46
  through
• 7:46
  really
• 7:47
  water
• 7:47
  that
• 7:47
  comes
• 7:47
  from
• 7:48
  anywhere
• 7:48
  in
• 7:48
  our
• 7:48
  house,
• 7:49
  you're
• 7:49
  anywhere
• 7:50
  between
• 7:50
  like
• 7:51
  4
• 7:51
  to
• 7:51
  10
• 7:52
  times
• 7:52
  what
• 7:52
  just
• 7:53
  the
• 7:53
  cost
• 7:53
  of
• 7:54
  replacing
• 7:54
  your
• 7:54
  roof
• 7:55
  would
• 7:55
  have
• 7:55
  been.
• 7:56
  And
• 7:56
  in
• 7:57
  the
• 7:57
  worst
• 7:57
  case,
• 7:58
  you
• 7:58
  might
• 7:58
  even
• 7:58
  be
• 7:58
  out
• 7:59
  of
• 7:59
  your
• 7:59
  home
• 7:59
  for
• 7:59
  a
• 7:59
  couple
• 7:59
  of
• 8:00
  months
• 8:00
  while
• 8:00
  you're
• 8:00
  having
• 8:01
  to
• 8:01
  cut
• 8:01
  out
• 8:01
  drywall
• 8:02
  and
• 8:02
  almost
• 8:03
  start
• 8:03
  over
• 8:03
  on
• 8:04
  a
• 8:04
  lot
• 8:04
  of
• 8:04
  the
• 8:04
  interior.
• 8:05
  I
• 8:05
  have
• 8:06
  seen
• 8:06
  some
• 8:06
  water
• 8:06
  damage
• 8:07
  get
• 8:07
  people
• 8:07
  out
• 8:07
  of
• 8:07
  a
• 8:07
  home
• 8:08
  for
• 8:08
  six
• 8:08
  months
• 8:09
  just
• 8:09
  because
• 8:09
  of
• 8:09
  the
• 8:10
  amount
• 8:10
  of
• 8:10
  work
• 8:10
  that
• 8:11
  had
• 8:11
  to
• 8:11
  be
• 8:11
  done
• 8:11
  inside.
• 8:12
  And
• 8:12
  anytime
• 8:13
  you
• 8:13
  can
• 8:13
  do
• 8:13
  something
• 8:14
  like
• 8:14
  that
• 8:14
  to
• 8:14
  prevent
• 8:15
  it.
• 8:15
  And
• 8:16
  quite
• 8:16
  frankly,
• 8:17
  if
• 8:17
  you
• 8:17
  have
• 8:17
  a
• 8:17
  discussion
• 8:17
  with
• 8:18
  your
• 8:18
  insurance
• 8:18
  provider
• 8:19
  as
• 8:19
  well,
• 8:19
  if
• 8:19
  you've
• 8:19
  done
• 8:19
  some
• 8:20
  of
• 8:20
  those
• 8:20
  steps,
• 8:21
  they
• 8:21
  might
• 8:21
  give
• 8:21
  you
• 8:21
  a
• 8:22
  little
• 8:22
  bit
• 8:22
  of
• 8:22
  a
• 8:22
  break
• 8:23
  on.
• 8:23
  Oh,
• 8:23
  okay.
• 8:24
  You
• 8:24
  got
• 8:24
  any
• 8:24
  paperwork
• 8:25
  on
• 8:25
  that?
• 8:25
  Maybe
• 8:25
  we
• 8:25
  can.
• 8:26
  You're
• 8:26
  at
• 8:26
  a
• 8:26
  lower
• 8:27
  risk
• 8:27
  than
• 8:27
  the
• 8:27
  house
• 8:27
  next
• 8:28
  door.
• 8:28
  Yeah,
• 8:28
  that's
• 8:29
  right.
• 8:29
  Like
• 8:29
  in
• 8:29
  a
• 8:29
  lot
• 8:30
  of
• 8:30
  places,
• 8:31
  the
• 8:31
  insurance
• 8:31
  discounts
• 8:32
  continue
• 8:32
  to
• 8:33
  grow
• 8:33
  and
• 8:33
  in
• 8:34
  some
• 8:34
  cases,
• 8:34
  some
• 8:34
  carriers
• 8:35
  will
• 8:35
  even
• 8:35
  provide
• 8:36
  what's
• 8:36
  called
• 8:36
  an
• 8:36
  endorsement
• 8:37
  while
• 8:37
  the
• 8:37
  to
• 8:37
  actually
• 8:37
  help
• 8:38
  cover
• 8:38
  the
• 8:38
  cost
• 8:38
  of
• 8:39
  those
• 8:39
  upgrades
• 8:40
  to
• 8:40
  your
• 8:40
  roof
• 8:41
  system.
• 8:41
  So
• 8:41
  that's
• 8:41
  something
• 8:42
  when
• 8:42
  you
• 8:42
  do
• 8:42
  those
• 8:43
  steps.
• 8:43
  Absolutely.
• 8:44
  Talk
• 8:44
  to
• 8:44
  your
• 8:45
  insurance
• 8:45
  agent
• 8:46
  and
• 8:46
  document
• 8:46
  it.
• 8:47
  Right.
• 8:47
  We
• 8:47
  always
• 8:48
  tell
• 8:48
  folks,
• 8:48
  go
• 8:48
  through
• 8:48
  our
• 8:49
  fortified
• 8:49
  roof
• 8:49
  program.
• 8:50
  That's
• 8:50
  a
• 8:50
  great
• 8:50
  way
• 8:51
  to
• 8:51
  ensure
• 8:51
  that's
• 8:51
  all
• 8:52
  done.
• 8:52
  But
• 8:52
  you
• 8:52
  can.
• 8:52
  Some
• 8:52
  of
• 8:52
  these
• 8:53
  elements
• 8:53
  you
• 8:53
  can
• 8:53
  do
• 8:54
  yourself.
• 8:54
  My
• 8:54
  parents
• 8:55
  did
• 8:55
  that
• 8:55
  in
• 8:55
  Baton
• 8:56
  Rouge.
• 8:56
  And
• 8:57
  again,
• 8:57
  document,
• 8:58
  talk
• 8:58
  to
• 8:58
  your
• 8:58
  agent
• 8:59
  because
• 8:59
  in
• 8:59
  a
• 8:59
  lot
• 8:59
  of
• 9:00
  places
• 9:00
  these
• 9:00
  things
• 9:00
  will
• 9:01
  get
• 9:01
  you
• 9:01
  a
• 9:02
  discount
• 9:02
  on
• 9:02
  your
• 9:03
  homeowner's
• 9:03
  policy.
• 9:04
  Yeah.
• 9:04
  Especially
• 9:05
  these
• 9:05
  days
• 9:05
  with
• 9:05
  the
• 9:06
  storms
• 9:06
  that
• 9:06
  are
• 9:06
  going
• 9:06
  in
• 9:06
  there.
• 9:07
  Anytime
• 9:07
  they
• 9:07
  can
• 9:07
  see
• 9:07
  that
• 9:07
  you're
• 9:08
  doing
• 9:08
  prevention,
• 9:09
  you've
• 9:09
  got
• 9:10
  their
• 9:10
  attention.
• 9:10
  And
• 9:11
  some
• 9:12
  places
• 9:12
  like
• 9:12
  California,
• 9:13
  where
• 9:13
  there's
• 9:14
  plenty
• 9:14
  of
• 9:14
  companies
• 9:14
  down
• 9:15
  there
• 9:15
  that
• 9:15
  when
• 9:16
  you
• 9:16
  go
• 9:16
  to
• 9:16
  change
• 9:17
  your
• 9:17
  policy,
• 9:17
  they
• 9:17
  go,
• 9:18
  oh,
• 9:18
  and
• 9:18
  by
• 9:18
  the
• 9:18
  way,
• 9:18
  we
• 9:19
  just
• 9:19
  canceled
• 9:19
  your
• 9:19
  policy
• 9:20
  since
• 9:20
  you're
• 9:20
  changing.
• 9:20
  It
• 9:21
  yeah,
• 9:21
  unfortunately,
• 9:22
  we
• 9:22
  have
• 9:22
  an
• 9:22
  insurance
• 9:23
  crisis
• 9:23
  that's
• 9:24
  been
• 9:24
  developing
• 9:25
  in
• 9:25
  the
• 9:25
  West.
• 9:25
  A
• 9:25
  lot
• 9:25
  of
• 9:26
  it's
• 9:26
  wildfire
• 9:27
  that
• 9:27
  threats
• 9:27
  driven.
• 9:28
  We're
• 9:28
  starting
• 9:28
  to
• 9:28
  science
• 9:29
  is
• 9:29
  caught
• 9:29
  up
• 9:29
  as
• 9:29
  to
• 9:30
  what
• 9:30
  we
• 9:30
  can
• 9:30
  do
• 9:30
  about
• 9:31
  that.
• 9:31
  But
• 9:32
  from
• 9:32
  the
• 9:33
  social
• 9:33
  science
• 9:33
  perspective,
• 9:34
  a
• 9:34
  lot
• 9:34
  of
• 9:34
  times
• 9:35
  when
• 9:35
  we
• 9:35
  start
• 9:35
  making
• 9:35
  these
• 9:36
  updates
• 9:36
  to
• 9:36
  our
• 9:36
  home,
• 9:36
  we
• 9:36
  just
• 9:37
  keep
• 9:37
  going.
• 9:37
  Right.
• 9:38
  Like
• 9:38
  when
• 9:38
  we
• 9:38
  start
• 9:39
  them,
• 9:39
  you
• 9:40
  feel
• 9:40
  really
• 9:40
  good
• 9:40
  about
• 9:41
  it
• 9:41
  and
• 9:41
  it
• 9:41
  often
• 9:42
  leads
• 9:42
  you
• 9:42
  down
• 9:42
  the
• 9:43
  road
• 9:43
  to
• 9:43
  doing
• 9:43
  a
• 9:44
  lot
• 9:44
  more.
• 9:45
  And
• 9:45
  then
• 9:45
  you
• 9:45
  end
• 9:45
  up
• 9:45
  in
• 9:46
  a
• 9:46
  place
• 9:46
  where
• 9:46
  I
• 9:46
  think
• 9:46
  about
• 9:47
  some
• 9:47
  of
• 9:47
  our
• 9:47
  Alabama
• 9:48
  fortified
• 9:48
  homeowners
• 9:49
  that
• 9:49
  were
• 9:49
  actually
• 9:49
  having
• 9:50
  neighbors
• 9:50
  who
• 9:50
  had
• 9:51
  their
• 9:51
  homes
• 9:51
  damaged
• 9:52
  come
• 9:52
  stay
• 9:52
  with
• 9:52
  them
• 9:53
  while
• 9:54
  their
• 9:54
  homes
• 9:54
  were
• 9:54
  being
• 9:55
  repaired.
• 9:55
  And
• 9:55
  you
• 9:55
  think
• 9:55
  about
• 9:56
  that
• 9:56
  like
• 9:56
  you're
• 9:56
  not
• 9:56
  only
• 9:57
  helping
• 9:58
  your
• 9:58
  neighbors,
• 9:59
  you
• 10:00
  are
• 10:00
  still
• 10:00
  in
• 10:01
  your
• 10:01
  home
• 10:01
  with
• 10:02
  a
• 10:02
  place
• 10:02
  to
• 10:02
  sleep,
• 10:03
  not
• 10:03
  having
• 10:04
  to
• 10:04
  go
• 10:04
  spend
• 10:04
  months
• 10:04
  in
• 10:05
  a
• 10:05
  hotel.
• 10:05
  I
• 10:05
  could
• 10:06
  start
• 10:06
  to
• 10:06
  imagine
• 10:06
  that
• 10:07
  with
• 10:07
  my
• 10:07
  two
• 10:07
  giant
• 10:08
  really
• 10:08
  big
• 10:09
  fox
• 10:09
  hounds
• 10:10
  and
• 10:10
  my
• 10:10
  seven
• 10:10
  year
• 10:10
  old
• 10:11
  in
• 10:11
  a
• 10:11
  hotel.
• 10:11
  That's
• 10:12
  a
• 10:12
  nightmare.
• 10:13
  That's
• 10:13
  a
• 10:13
  nightmare.
• 10:13
  I
• 10:14
  don't
• 10:14
  want
• 10:14
  to
• 10:14
  do
• 10:14
  that.
• 10:15
  There's
• 10:15
  no
• 10:15
  way
• 10:15
  I
• 10:16
  want
• 10:16
  to
• 10:16
  do
• 10:16
  that.
• 10:17
  Not
• 10:17
  a
• 10:17
  chance.
• 10:18
  Not
• 10:19
  a
• 10:19
  chance.
• 10:19
  Yeah,
• 10:20
  it's
• 10:20
  crazy.
• 10:20
  Why
• 10:20
  you
• 10:21
  talk
• 10:21
  to
• 10:21
  people
• 10:21
  who
• 10:21
  go
• 10:21
  through
• 10:22
  this,
• 10:22
  they
• 10:22
  don't
• 10:22
  want
• 10:22
  to
• 10:23
  do
• 10:23
  it
• 10:23
  again.
• 10:23
  So
• 10:23
  their
• 10:23
  whole
• 10:24
  perception
• 10:24
  has
• 10:24
  changed.
• 10:25
  But
• 10:25
  we
• 10:26
  want
• 10:26
  to
• 10:26
  get
• 10:26
  to
• 10:26
  the
• 10:26
  place
• 10:26
  where
• 10:27
  you
• 10:27
  don't
• 10:27
  have
• 10:27
  to
• 10:27
  go
• 10:28
  through
• 10:28
  one
• 10:28
  of
• 10:28
  these
• 10:28
  really
• 10:28
  bad
• 10:29
  events
• 10:29
  to
• 10:30
  take
• 10:30
  some
• 10:30
  of
• 10:30
  these
• 10:31
  steps.
• 10:31
  So
• 10:31
  round
• 10:32
  the
• 10:32
  house.
• 10:32
  We'll
• 10:32
  be
• 10:32
  right

  back

• 10:37
  We're
• 10:38
  just
• 10:38
  getting
• 10:38
  started.
• 10:42
  So
• 10:44
  many
• 10:45
  people
• 10:45
  without.
• 10:49
  Welcome

• 11:16
  Let's
• 11:16
  talk
• 11:17
  about
• 11:17
  how
• 11:17
  to
• 11:17
  keep
• 11:18
  your
• 11:18
  house
• 11:19
  fortified
• 11:20
  and
• 11:20
  making
• 11:20
  it
• 11:21
  through
• 11:21
  the
• 11:21
  next
• 11:21
  storm.
• 11:22
  Yeah,
• 11:22
  absolutely.
• 11:22
  My
• 11:23
  roof
• 11:23
  system
• 11:23
  here
• 11:24
  is,
• 11:24
  it's
• 11:24
  a
• 11:24
  probably
• 11:24
  a
• 11:25
  20
• 11:25
  year
• 11:25
  roof.
• 11:25
  It
• 11:25
  was
• 11:25
  on
• 11:25
  it
• 11:26
  when
• 11:26
  I
• 11:26
  bought
• 11:26
  the
• 11:26
  house
• 11:26
  and
• 11:26
  I
• 11:27
  knew
• 11:27
  what
• 11:27
  it
• 11:27
  was
• 11:27
  when
• 11:27
  I
• 11:28
  got
• 11:28
  it.
• 11:28
  So
• 11:28
  insurance
• 11:29
  company
• 11:29
  was
• 11:29
  like,
• 11:30
  that's
• 11:30
  not
• 11:30
  in
• 11:30
  its
• 11:30
  best
• 11:31
  shape.
• 11:31
  And
• 11:31
  I'm
• 11:31
  like,
• 11:31
  yeah,
• 11:32
  you're
• 11:32
  right.
• 11:32
  I'm
• 11:32
  gonna
• 11:32
  do
• 11:33
  some
• 11:33
  stuff
• 11:33
  around
• 11:33
  here
• 11:34
  first
• 11:34
  and
• 11:35
  then
• 11:35
  I'm
• 11:35
  gonna
• 11:35
  put
• 11:35
  a
• 11:35
  roof
• 11:35
  on
• 11:36
  it.
• 11:36
  And
• 11:36
  I've
• 11:36
  been
• 11:37
  talking
• 11:37
  to
• 11:37
  you
• 11:37
  guys
• 11:37
  for
• 11:37
  years.
• 11:38
  And
• 11:38
  it's
• 11:38
  like,
• 11:38
  all
• 11:38
  right,
• 11:38
  I
• 11:39
  think
• 11:39
  next
• 11:39
  year
• 11:39
  is
• 11:39
  going
• 11:39
  to
• 11:39
  be
• 11:40
  a
• 11:40
  fortified
• 11:40
  roof
• 11:40
  on
• 11:41
  my
• 11:41
  place
• 11:41
  because
• 11:42
  I
• 11:42
  just
• 11:42
  want
• 11:42
  to
• 11:43
  have
• 11:43
  it
• 11:43
  done
• 11:43
  right.
• 11:44
  And
• 11:44
  being
• 11:44
  a
• 11:44
  west
• 11:44
  coast
• 11:45
  guy
• 11:45
  with
• 11:46
  wildfires
• 11:46
  and
• 11:46
  windstorms,
• 11:47
  anything
• 11:48
  I
• 11:48
  can
• 11:48
  do
• 11:48
  with
• 11:49
  that
• 11:49
  wind
• 11:49
  to
• 11:49
  help
• 11:49
  keep
• 11:50
  things
• 11:50
  ship
• 11:51
  shape
• 11:51
  and
• 11:51
  looking
• 11:51
  good,
• 11:52
  I'm
• 11:52
  happy.
• 11:53
  Yeah,
• 11:53
  My
• 11:54
  parents
• 11:54
  did
• 11:54
  the
• 11:54
  same
• 11:54
  thing
• 11:55
  magically.
• 11:56
  They
• 11:56
  got
• 11:56
  who
• 11:57
  almost
• 11:57
  25
• 11:58
  years
• 11:58
  plus
• 11:58
  out
• 11:58
  of
• 11:58
  their
• 11:59
  roof
• 11:59
  in
• 11:59
  Baton
• 11:59
  Rouge,
• 11:59
  Louisiana
• 12:00
  which
• 12:00
  made
• 12:00
  it
• 12:00
  through
• 12:01
  a
• 12:01
  couple
• 12:01
  of
• 12:01
  hurricanes
• 12:02
  too.
• 12:02
  Which
• 12:02
  is
• 12:02
  remarkable
• 12:03
  to
• 12:03
  be
• 12:03
  honest,
• 12:03
  knowing
• 12:04
  all
• 12:04
  the
• 12:04
  data
• 12:04
  behind
• 12:05
  a
• 12:05
  lot
• 12:05
  of
• 12:05
  roof
• 12:05
  damage.
• 12:06
  But
• 12:06
  they
• 12:07
  did
• 12:07
  the
• 12:07
  exact
• 12:07
  same
• 12:07
  thing
• 12:08
  they
• 12:08
  they
• 12:08
  had
• 12:08
  saved
• 12:08
  knowing
• 12:09
  they're
• 12:09
  going
• 12:09
  to
• 12:09
  have
• 12:09
  a
• 12:09
  replacement
• 12:10
  coming.
• 12:11
  Went
• 12:11
  to
• 12:11
  one
• 12:11
  of
• 12:11
  the
• 12:11
  Malarkey
• 12:12
  shingle
• 12:12
  products,
• 12:13
  one
• 12:13
  of
• 12:13
  the
• 12:13
  polymer
• 12:13
  modified
• 12:14
  asphalt
• 12:14
  shingles.
• 12:15
  Did
• 12:15
  the.
• 12:15
  My
• 12:15
  dad
• 12:15
  walked
• 12:16
  the
• 12:16
  roofer
• 12:16
  through
• 12:16
  the
• 12:16
  sealed
• 12:17
  deck
• 12:18
  and
• 12:18
  yeah,
• 12:18
  he
• 12:19
  was
• 12:19
  really.
• 12:19
  And
• 12:19
  my
• 12:19
  mom,
• 12:20
  it's
• 12:20
  funny,
• 12:21
  my
• 12:21
  parents
• 12:21
  are
• 12:22
  in
• 12:22
  their
• 12:22
  late
• 12:23
  70s.
• 12:23
  My
• 12:23
  mom's
• 12:24
  talking
• 12:24
  about.
• 12:24
  My
• 12:24
  mom
• 12:24
  is
• 12:25
  a
• 12:25
  PhD
• 12:25
  in
• 12:26
  music.
• 12:26
  She
• 12:26
  was
• 12:27
  a
• 12:27
  band
• 12:27
  director
• 12:27
  forever,
• 12:28
  but.
• 12:28
  She'S
• 12:28
  PhD
• 12:29
  in
• 12:29
  music.
• 12:29
  So
• 12:29
  I
• 12:29
  get
• 12:30
  that.
• 12:30
  Yeah.
• 12:30
  She's
• 12:31
  talking
• 12:31
  about
• 12:31
  how
• 12:31
  good
• 12:32
  their
• 12:32
  roof
• 12:32
  is.
• 12:32
  And
• 12:32
  I'm
• 12:33
  sitting
• 12:34
  there
• 12:34
  like
• 12:34
  wow,
• 12:34
  okay.
• 12:35
  You
• 12:36
  clearly
• 12:36
  have
• 12:36
  taken
• 12:36
  some
• 12:37
  pride
• 12:37
  in
• 12:37
  the
• 12:37
  new
• 12:38
  roof
• 12:38
  mom.
• 12:38
  But
• 12:39
  kudos
• 12:39
  to
• 12:40
  my
• 12:40
  folks.
• 12:40
  They
• 12:41
  took
• 12:41
  all
• 12:41
  the
• 12:41
  guidance
• 12:41
  we
• 12:42
  have
• 12:42
  at
• 12:42
  ibhs.
• 12:43
  We
• 12:43
  put
• 12:43
  a
• 12:43
  lot
• 12:44
  of
• 12:44
  that
• 12:44
  into
• 12:44
  our
• 12:44
  home
• 12:45
  here
• 12:45
  and
• 12:46
  it
• 12:46
  can
• 12:47
  work.
• 12:47
  And
• 12:47
  for
• 12:47
  them
• 12:47
  it
• 12:47
  was
• 12:48
  actually
• 12:48
  affordable.
• 12:48
  Like
• 12:49
  it
• 12:49
  didn't
• 12:49
  really
• 12:49
  change
• 12:50
  much
• 12:50
  of
• 12:50
  the
• 12:50
  cost
• 12:51
  from
• 12:51
  what
• 12:51
  they
• 12:51
  would
• 12:51
  have.
• 12:52
  They
• 12:52
  just
• 12:52
  had
• 12:52
  to
• 12:52
  shop
• 12:52
  it
• 12:52
  around
• 12:53
  a
• 12:53
  couple
• 12:53
  different
• 12:53
  contractors.
• 12:54
  I
• 12:55
  now
• 12:55
  need
• 12:55
  to
• 12:55
  come
• 12:55
  up
• 12:55
  with
• 12:55
  a
• 12:56
  product
• 12:57
  to
• 12:57
  stop
• 12:57
  these
• 12:58
  130
• 13:00
  to
• 13:00
  year
• 13:01
  old
• 13:01
  fir
• 13:01
  trees
• 13:01
  that
• 13:01
  are
• 13:02
  100ft
• 13:02
  tall
• 13:03
  to
• 13:03
  protect
• 13:03
  my
• 13:04
  home.
• 13:04
  Because
• 13:04
  that's
• 13:04
  going
• 13:04
  to
• 13:04
  become
• 13:05
  the
• 13:05
  next
• 13:05
  one
• 13:05
  because
• 13:06
  I
• 13:06
  tell
• 13:06
  you
• 13:06
  what,
• 13:06
  there's
• 13:07
  a
• 13:07
  house.
• 13:07
  We
• 13:07
  had
• 13:07
  an
• 13:07
  ice
• 13:08
  storm
• 13:08
  with
• 13:08
  wind
• 13:09
  here
• 13:10
  last
• 13:10
  January.
• 13:11
  February
• 13:11
  here
• 13:11
  in
• 13:11
  the
• 13:11
  Pacific
• 13:12
  Northwest
• 13:13
  hit
• 13:13
  us.
• 13:13
  We
• 13:13
  had
• 13:13
  like
• 13:13
  an
• 13:14
  inch
• 13:14
  of
• 13:14
  inch
• 13:15
  of
• 13:15
  ice
• 13:15
  and
• 13:15
  then
• 13:16
  we
• 13:16
  had
• 13:16
  the
• 13:17
  heavy
• 13:17
  winds
• 13:17
  on
• 13:17
  top
• 13:17
  of
• 13:18
  it
• 13:18
  and
• 13:18
  a
• 13:18
  house
• 13:19
  two
• 13:19
  blocks
• 13:19
  away.
• 13:20
  This
• 13:21
  happened
• 13:21
  in
• 13:21
  February.
• 13:21
  They
• 13:22
  just
• 13:22
  moved
• 13:22
  in
• 13:23
  back
• 13:23
  in
• 13:23
  two
• 13:23
  weeks
• 13:23
  ago.
• 13:24
  And
• 13:24
  it
• 13:25
  got
• 13:25
  hit
• 13:25
  with
• 13:26
  trees
• 13:26
  coming
• 13:27
  newer
• 13:27
  build
• 13:28
  there
• 13:28
  was.
• 13:29
  Everything
• 13:29
  was
• 13:29
  held
• 13:30
  up.
• 13:30
  It
• 13:30
  was
• 13:30
  framed
• 13:31
  correctly.
• 13:31
  It
• 13:32
  had
• 13:32
  all
• 13:32
  the
• 13:32
  Simpson
• 13:33
  or
• 13:33
  Brandax
• 13:34
  ties
• 13:34
  that
• 13:34
  were
• 13:34
  holding
• 13:35
  everything
• 13:35
  together.
• 13:36
  And
• 13:37
  when
• 13:37
  one
• 13:38
  big
• 13:38
  tree
• 13:38
  came
• 13:39
  down,
• 13:39
  caught
• 13:39
  the
• 13:39
  eaves
• 13:40
  of
• 13:40
  the
• 13:40
  roof,
• 13:41
  it
• 13:41
  lifted
• 13:42
  the
• 13:43
  roof
• 13:43
  system
• 13:43
  up,
• 13:44
  trusses
• 13:45
  and
• 13:45
  everything
• 13:46
  and
• 13:46
  put
• 13:46
  it
• 13:46
  back
• 13:46
  down
• 13:47
  askew
• 13:47
  because
• 13:48
  it
• 13:48
  just
• 13:48
  only
• 13:49
  drop
• 13:50
  £5,000
• 13:51
  of
• 13:51
  tree
• 13:51
  onto
• 13:52
  a.
• 13:52
  On
• 13:52
  a
• 13:52
  two
• 13:53
  by
• 13:53
  fours
• 13:53
  it
• 13:54
  there's
• 13:54
  mass
• 13:55
  is
• 13:55
  going
• 13:55
  to
• 13:55
  Win
• 13:55
  on
• 13:55
  that.
• 13:56
  Yeah.
• 13:57
  We
• 13:57
  look
• 13:57
  at
• 13:57
  what
• 13:57
  just
• 13:58
  happened
• 13:58
  this
• 13:58
  year
• 13:59
  with
• 13:59
  Hurricane
• 13:59
  Helene,
• 14:00
  when
• 14:00
  it
• 14:00
  moved
• 14:01
  inland,
• 14:01
  the
• 14:01
  biggest
• 14:02
  issue
• 14:02
  really
• 14:02
  came
• 14:03
  down
• 14:03
  to
• 14:03
  trees.
• 14:03
  And
• 14:04
  in
• 14:04
  the
• 14:04
  southeast
• 14:04
  us,
• 14:05
  we're
• 14:05
  tons
• 14:06
  of
• 14:06
  pines,
• 14:07
  love
• 14:07
  our
• 14:07
  big
• 14:07
  oaks,
• 14:08
  and
• 14:08
  they
• 14:08
  come
• 14:08
  down
• 14:09
  like
• 14:09
  we
• 14:09
  talk
• 14:09
  about.
• 14:10
  Trees
• 14:10
  are
• 14:10
  good
• 14:10
  until
• 14:11
  they're
• 14:11
  not.
• 14:11
  And
• 14:12
  there
• 14:12
  is
• 14:12
  a
• 14:12
  place
• 14:13
  where
• 14:13
  you
• 14:13
  can
• 14:13
  use
• 14:14
  dense
• 14:15
  tree
• 14:15
  canopies
• 14:16
  as
• 14:16
  an
• 14:16
  advantage
• 14:17
  to
• 14:17
  actually
• 14:17
  as
• 14:17
  a
• 14:17
  windbreak.
• 14:18
  Right.
• 14:18
  We
• 14:18
  know
• 14:18
  that
• 14:18
  from
• 14:19
  centuries
• 14:20
  ago,
• 14:20
  but
• 14:21
  in
• 14:21
  the
• 14:21
  instance
• 14:22
  where
• 14:22
  they
• 14:22
  are
• 14:22
  so
• 14:23
  close
• 14:23
  to
• 14:23
  your
• 14:23
  home,
• 14:23
  they
• 14:23
  can
• 14:24
  be
• 14:24
  detrimental,
• 14:24
  too.
• 14:25
  And
• 14:25
  we
• 14:25
  saw
• 14:25
  that
• 14:25
  with
• 14:25
  Helene,
• 14:26
  where
• 14:26
  the
• 14:26
  inland
• 14:27
  impacts,
• 14:27
  because
• 14:27
  of
• 14:27
  this,
• 14:28
  not
• 14:28
  just
• 14:28
  we
• 14:29
  had
• 14:29
  catastrophic
• 14:29
  flooding,
• 14:30
  we
• 14:30
  had
• 14:31
  clearly
• 14:32
  well
• 14:32
  enough
• 14:32
  wind
• 14:33
  to
• 14:33
  knock
• 14:33
  down
• 14:34
  trees.
• 14:35
  And
• 14:35
  that
• 14:35
  became
• 14:35
  the
• 14:35
  story,
• 14:36
  rather
• 14:36
  than
• 14:36
  the
• 14:36
  immediate
• 14:37
  coastal
• 14:37
  impacts
• 14:38
  which
• 14:38
  occurred
• 14:38
  in
• 14:39
  an
• 14:39
  area
• 14:39
  of
• 14:39
  Florida,
• 14:40
  which
• 14:40
  it's
• 14:41
  one
• 14:41
  of
• 14:41
  the
• 14:41
  few
• 14:41
  places
• 14:41
  where
• 14:42
  very
• 14:42
  few
• 14:42
  people
• 14:42
  live.
• 14:43
  Yeah.
• 14:44
  And
• 14:44
  that's
• 14:44
  crazy.
• 14:45
  Like
• 14:45
  here,
• 14:45
  it's
• 14:45
  not
• 14:45
  even
• 14:45
  like
• 14:46
  that
• 14:46
  root
• 14:46
  ball
• 14:46
  tipping
• 14:47
  up
• 14:47
  that
• 14:47
  you
• 14:47
  see
• 14:47
  where
• 14:48
  it
• 14:48
  was
• 14:48
  a
• 14:48
  root
• 14:48
  issue.
• 14:49
  I
• 14:49
  saw
• 14:50
  stuff
• 14:50
  that
• 14:50
  broke
• 14:50
  off
• 14:51
  two
• 14:51
  feet
• 14:51
  above
• 14:52
  ground,
• 14:52
  and
• 14:52
  it
• 14:52
  took
• 14:52
  a
• 14:53
  36,
• 14:54
  around
• 14:54
  36
• 14:55
  wide
• 14:56
  tree,
• 14:56
  snapped
• 14:56
  it
• 14:57
  off
• 14:57
  at
• 14:57
  the
• 14:57
  base
• 14:57
  and
• 14:58
  dropped
• 14:58
  over.
• 14:58
  And
• 14:58
  it's
• 14:59
  like,
• 14:59
  there's
• 14:59
  no
• 15:00
  preventing
• 15:00
  that.
• 15:01
  And
• 15:01
  the
• 15:01
  other
• 15:02
  problem
• 15:02
  is
• 15:02
  all
• 15:02
  these
• 15:02
  trees
• 15:03
  are
• 15:03
  protected.
• 15:03
  And
• 15:03
  so
• 15:04
  even
• 15:04
  if
• 15:04
  you've
• 15:04
  got
• 15:05
  something
• 15:05
  that
• 15:05
  an
• 15:05
  arborist
• 15:06
  says,
• 15:06
  hey,
• 15:07
  probably
• 15:08
  should
• 15:08
  take
• 15:08
  that
• 15:08
  down,
• 15:09
  because
• 15:09
  it's
• 15:09
  not
• 15:09
  healthy,
• 15:10
  there
• 15:11
  are
• 15:11
  hoops
• 15:11
  and
• 15:12
  permits
• 15:12
  and
• 15:13
  inspections
• 15:14
  and
• 15:14
  all
• 15:14
  this
• 15:14
  stuff
• 15:15
  you
• 15:15
  have
• 15:15
  to
• 15:15
  get
• 15:15
  through.
• 15:15
  And
• 15:16
  unfortunately,
• 15:17
  I
• 15:17
  love
• 15:18
  protecting
• 15:18
  trees,
• 15:18
  but
• 15:19
  at
• 15:19
  the
• 15:19
  same
• 15:19
  point,
• 15:20
  a
• 15:20
  lot
• 15:20
  of
• 15:20
  homeowners
• 15:21
  struggle
• 15:21
  because
• 15:21
  they're
• 15:22
  like,
• 15:22
  wow,
• 15:22
  okay,
• 15:22
  that's
• 15:22
  gonna
• 15:22
  be
• 15:23
  $12,000
• 15:24
  to
• 15:24
  take
• 15:24
  that
• 15:24
  tree
• 15:24
  down
• 15:24
  by
• 15:24
  the
• 15:25
  time
• 15:25
  we
• 15:25
  get
• 15:25
  through
• 15:26
  the
• 15:26
  arborist
• 15:27
  reports
• 15:27
  and
• 15:27
  the
• 15:27
  permits
• 15:28
  and
• 15:28
  everything
• 15:28
  else.
• 15:29
  And
• 15:30
  now
• 15:30
  a
• 15:30
  lot
• 15:30
  of
• 15:30
  homes
• 15:31
  still
• 15:31
  have
• 15:31
  trees
• 15:31
  around
• 15:32
  them,
• 15:32
  but
• 15:32
  with
• 15:33
  today's
• 15:33
  economy,
• 15:33
  they
• 15:34
  can't
• 15:34
  afford
• 15:34
  to
• 15:34
  take
• 15:34
  that
• 15:35
  down.
• 15:35
  And
• 15:35
  the
• 15:36
  insurance
• 15:36
  companies
• 15:36
  at
• 15:37
  the
• 15:37
  same
• 15:37
  point,
• 15:37
  aren't
• 15:37
  really
• 15:38
  interested
• 15:38
  in
• 15:38
  that
• 15:39
  level
• 15:39
  of
• 15:39
  prevention
• 15:40
  sometimes.
• 15:40
  So
• 15:40
  it's
• 15:40
  tough.
• 15:41
  Yeah.
• 15:41
  There's
• 15:42
  where
• 15:42
  I
• 15:42
  think
• 15:42
  when
• 15:42
  we
• 15:42
  get
• 15:43
  down
• 15:43
  to
• 15:43
  that
• 15:43
  kind
• 15:43
  of
• 15:43
  granular
• 15:44
  stuff,
• 15:44
  you're
• 15:44
  going
• 15:45
  to
• 15:45
  see
• 15:45
  the
• 15:45
  carriers.
• 15:45
  That's
• 15:45
  just
• 15:46
  a
• 15:46
  level
• 15:46
  of
• 15:46
  detail
• 15:47
  that
• 15:47
  I
• 15:47
  don't
• 15:47
  think
• 15:48
  right
• 15:48
  now
• 15:48
  insurers
• 15:49
  are
• 15:49
  going
• 15:49
  to
• 15:50
  really
• 15:50
  focus
• 15:50
  on.
• 15:50
  They
• 15:51
  can
• 15:51
  log
• 15:51
  information
• 15:52
  on
• 15:52
  our
• 15:52
  structures
• 15:53
  more
• 15:53
  readily.
• 15:54
  It
• 15:54
  may
• 15:54
  change,
• 15:55
  who
• 15:55
  knows,
• 15:55
  as
• 15:55
  technology
• 15:56
  and
• 15:56
  machine
• 15:56
  vision
• 15:56
  gets
• 15:56
  better.
• 15:57
  But
• 15:57
  I
• 15:57
  think
• 15:57
  you
• 15:57
  hit
• 15:58
  a
• 15:58
  good
• 15:58
  point.
• 15:58
  Like,
• 15:58
  we're
• 15:58
  in
• 15:59
  a
• 15:59
  place
• 15:59
  where
• 15:59
  we
• 15:59
  have
• 15:59
  to
• 16:00
  look
• 16:00
  at
• 16:00
  this
• 16:00
  from
• 16:00
  a
• 16:00
  balance.
• 16:01
  What
• 16:01
  is
• 16:01
  the
• 16:02
  true
• 16:02
  balancing
• 16:03
  act?
• 16:03
  We
• 16:03
  can't
• 16:04
  tip
• 16:04
  the
• 16:04
  scale
• 16:04
  one
• 16:05
  way,
• 16:05
  all
• 16:05
  the
• 16:05
  way,
• 16:05
  the
• 16:05
  other,
• 16:06
  either
• 16:06
  way.
• 16:07
  But
• 16:07
  we
• 16:07
  have
• 16:07
  to
• 16:07
  look
• 16:08
  hard
• 16:08
  at
• 16:08
  it,
• 16:08
  especially
• 16:09
  as
• 16:09
  we're
• 16:09
  dealing
• 16:09
  with
• 16:09
  more
• 16:10
  and
• 16:10
  more
• 16:10
  of
• 16:10
  these
• 16:10
  events.
• 16:11
  And
• 16:11
  we
• 16:12
  also
• 16:12
  know
• 16:12
  we
• 16:12
  need
• 16:12
  houses.
• 16:13
  We
• 16:13
  have
• 16:14
  to
• 16:14
  build.
• 16:14
  We
• 16:14
  need.
• 16:15
  We
• 16:15
  have
• 16:15
  a
• 16:15
  housing
• 16:15
  crisis
• 16:16
  in
• 16:16
  the
• 16:16
  United
• 16:16
  States.
• 16:17
  And
• 16:17
  so
• 16:17
  we
• 16:17
  need
• 16:17
  to
• 16:18
  do
• 16:18
  this
• 16:18
  with
• 16:18
  all
• 16:18
  this
• 16:19
  stuff
• 16:19
  in
• 16:19
  mind
• 16:19
  and
• 16:20
  find
• 16:20
  that
• 16:20
  nice
• 16:20
  balance
• 16:21
  in
• 16:21
  the
• 16:21
  middle.
• 16:22
  But
• 16:22
  yeah,
• 16:22
  this
• 16:23
  year
• 16:23
  was
• 16:23
  one
• 16:23
  of
• 16:23
  those
• 16:23
  where
• 16:24
  you
• 16:24
  guys
• 16:24
  deal
• 16:24
  with
• 16:25
  the
• 16:25
  big
• 16:25
  windstorms
• 16:26
  on
• 16:26
  the
• 16:26
  west
• 16:26
  coast.
• 16:27
  Conifers
• 16:27
  are
• 16:27
  just
• 16:28
  going
• 16:28
  to
• 16:28
  snap.
• 16:28
  We
• 16:28
  see
• 16:29
  that
• 16:29
  in
• 16:29
  pines
• 16:30
  in
• 16:30
  the
• 16:30
  southeast
• 16:30
  US
• 16:31
  and
• 16:31
  then
• 16:31
  of
• 16:32
  course
• 16:32
  we
• 16:32
  have
• 16:32
  the
• 16:32
  wonderful
• 16:33
  live
• 16:33
  oaks
• 16:33
  that
• 16:34
  just.
• 16:34
  The
• 16:34
  entire
• 16:34
  whole
• 16:35
  thing
• 16:35
  just
• 16:35
  tips
• 16:36
  over.
• 16:36
  Exactly.
• 16:37
  Yeah.
• 16:37
  There
• 16:37
  is
• 16:38
  no
• 16:38
  roof
• 16:38
  system
• 16:38
  that's
• 16:39
  going
• 16:39
  to
• 16:39
  withstand
• 16:39
  that.
• 16:40
  And
• 16:41
  it's.
• 16:41
  It's.
• 16:41
  To
• 16:42
  be
• 16:42
  honest,
• 16:42
  it's
• 16:42
  probably
• 16:42
  a
• 16:42
  bridge
• 16:43
  too
• 16:43
  far
• 16:43
  from
• 16:43
  an
• 16:43
  economics
• 16:44
  of
• 16:44
  building.
• 16:45
  We
• 16:45
  just
• 16:45
  got
• 16:45
  to
• 16:46
  start
• 16:46
  thinking
• 16:46
  about
• 16:47
  how
• 16:47
  do
• 16:47
  we
• 16:47
  do
• 16:47
  this,
• 16:48
  how
• 16:48
  do
• 16:48
  we
• 16:48
  use
• 16:49
  vegetation
• 16:50
  across
• 16:50
  the
• 16:50
  board
• 16:51
  as
• 16:51
  one.
• 16:51
  Some
• 16:52
  of
• 16:52
  the
• 16:52
  benefits
• 16:52
  that
• 16:52
  you
• 16:53
  get
• 16:53
  from
• 16:53
  it.
• 16:53
  But
• 16:53
  also
• 16:53
  keeping
• 16:54
  that
• 16:54
  in
• 16:54
  mind
• 16:54
  that,
• 16:55
  hey,
• 16:55
  this
• 16:55
  might.
• 16:56
  We
• 16:56
  don't
• 16:56
  want
• 16:56
  to
• 16:57
  introduce
• 16:57
  a
• 16:57
  vulnerability
• 16:58
  as
• 16:58
  we
• 16:59
  plant
• 16:59
  a
• 16:59
  tree,
• 16:59
  not
• 17:00
  realizing
• 17:00
  it's
• 17:00
  going
• 17:00
  to
• 17:01
  end
• 17:01
  up
• 17:01
  40ft
• 17:02
  tall
• 17:03
  and
• 17:03
  6ft
• 17:04
  in
• 17:04
  diameter
• 17:05
  right
• 17:05
  up
• 17:06
  against
• 17:06
  our
• 17:06
  home.
• 17:06
  Yeah,
• 17:07
  so
• 17:07
  very
• 17:07
  true.
• 17:08
  And
• 17:08
  it's
• 17:08
  funny,
• 17:08
  as
• 17:08
  I've
• 17:09
  been
• 17:09
  remodeling
• 17:09
  my
• 17:09
  place,
• 17:10
  I
• 17:10
  was
• 17:11
  took
• 17:11
  out
• 17:11
  a
• 17:11
  closet
• 17:12
  and
• 17:12
  I
• 17:12
  moved
• 17:12
  it
• 17:12
  and
• 17:13
  put
• 17:13
  the
• 17:13
  master
• 17:13
  bedroom
• 17:14
  bed
• 17:14
  up
• 17:14
  against
• 17:15
  that.
• 19:41
  And
• 19:41
  when
• 19:42
  I
• 19:42
  framed
• 19:42
  out
• 19:42
  the
• 19:42
  soffit
• 19:43
  for
• 19:43
  the
• 19:43
  lights
• 19:43
  I
• 19:43
  put
• 19:44
  up
• 19:44
  there,
• 19:44
  my
• 19:45
  wife
• 19:45
  was
• 19:45
  like,
• 19:45
  why
• 19:46
  are
• 19:46
  you
• 19:46
  putting
• 19:46
  a
• 19:47
  beam
• 19:47
  up
• 19:47
  there?
• 19:47
  I'm
• 19:48
  like,
• 19:48
  well,
• 19:49
  that's
• 19:49
  a
• 19:49
  roll
• 19:49
  cage
• 19:50
  up
• 19:50
  there
• 19:50
  for
• 19:50
  us.
• 19:50
  Just
• 19:51
  in
• 19:51
  case.
• 19:51
  I
• 19:52
  built
• 19:52
  it
• 19:52
  10
• 19:53
  times
• 19:53
  stronger
• 19:53
  than
• 19:54
  what
• 19:54
  it
• 19:54
  needed
• 19:54
  to
• 19:54
  be.
• 19:55
  I
• 19:55
  didn't
• 19:55
  need
• 19:55
  a
• 19:55
  header
• 19:56
  up
• 19:56
  there,
• 19:56
  but
• 19:56
  I
• 19:56
  headed
• 19:57
  across
• 19:57
  the
• 19:57
  entire
• 19:58
  room
• 19:58
  up
• 19:58
  there
• 19:59
  just
• 19:59
  to
• 19:59
  give
• 19:59
  myself
• 20:00
  a
• 20:00
  little
• 20:00
  more
• 20:01
  protection
• 20:02
  in
• 20:02
  case
• 20:02
  we
• 20:02
  had
• 20:02
  something
• 20:03
  come
• 20:03
  down.
• 20:04
  Yeah,
• 20:04
  that's
• 20:04
  actually
• 20:05
  really
• 20:05
  smart
• 20:05
  to
• 20:06
  think
• 20:06
  even
• 20:06
  to
• 20:06
  that
• 20:06
  level
• 20:07
  detail.
• 20:07
  And
• 20:07
  actually
• 20:07
  had
• 20:08
  a
• 20:08
  friend
• 20:08
  of
• 20:08
  mine
• 20:08
  who
• 20:08
  works
• 20:09
  for
• 20:09
  the
• 20:09
  National
• 20:09
  Weather
• 20:09
  Service
• 20:10
  in
• 20:10
  Slidell
• 20:11
  do
• 20:11
  exactly
• 20:12
  the
• 20:12
  same
• 20:12
  thing.
• 20:13
  Was
• 20:14
  really
• 20:14
  even
• 20:14
  thought
• 20:15
  about
• 20:15
  the
• 20:15
  trees
• 20:15
  on
• 20:16
  their
• 20:16
  property.
• 20:16
  My
• 20:16
  parents,
• 20:17
  they
• 20:17
  have
• 20:17
  a
• 20:17
  huge
• 20:18
  pie.
• 20:18
  They're
• 20:18
  still
• 20:19
  in
• 20:19
  the
• 20:19
  house
• 20:19
  I
• 20:19
  grew
• 20:19
  up
• 20:20
  in.
• 20:20
  And
• 20:20
  they'll
• 20:21
  during
• 20:21
  hurricanes
• 20:22
  go
• 20:22
  sleep
• 20:22
  in
• 20:23
  another
• 20:23
  bedroom
• 20:24
  because
• 20:24
  certain
• 20:25
  wind
• 20:25
  direction,
• 20:26
  this
• 20:26
  massive
• 20:27
  pine,
• 20:28
  it's
• 20:28
  going
• 20:28
  to
• 20:28
  come
• 20:29
  down
• 20:29
  right
• 20:29
  on
• 20:29
  top
• 20:30
  of
• 20:30
  where
• 20:30
  their
• 20:30
  bedroom
• 20:30
  was.
• 20:31
  And
• 20:31
  that's.
• 20:32
  I
• 20:32
  would
• 20:32
  encourage
• 20:32
  folks
• 20:33
  to
• 20:33
  think
• 20:33
  about
• 20:33
  stuff
• 20:34
  like
• 20:34
  that.
• 20:35
  Yeah,
• 20:35
  we
• 20:35
  look
• 20:35
  at
• 20:35
  it
• 20:36
  here
• 20:36
  as
• 20:36
  well
• 20:36
  like
• 20:36
  this.
• 20:37
  We
• 20:37
  had
• 20:37
  that
• 20:37
  bomb
• 20:38
  cyclone
• 20:38
  coming
• 20:38
  into
• 20:39
  us
• 20:39
  here
• 20:39
  last
• 20:39
  week
• 20:40
  or
• 20:40
  so
• 20:40
  and
• 20:41
  taking
• 20:41
  a
• 20:41
  peek
• 20:41
  at
• 20:41
  that.
• 20:42
  And
• 20:42
  I'm
• 20:42
  like,
• 20:42
  okay,
• 20:43
  that's
• 20:43
  coming
• 20:43
  from
• 20:44
  the
• 20:44
  east
• 20:44
  and
• 20:44
  the
• 20:45
  winds.
• 20:45
  So
• 20:46
  that
• 20:46
  grove
• 20:46
  of
• 20:47
  trees
• 20:47
  on
• 20:47
  the
• 20:47
  property
• 20:48
  is
• 20:48
  at
• 20:48
  risk.
• 20:48
  The
• 20:48
  ones
• 20:48
  in
• 20:48
  the
• 20:49
  back
• 20:49
  aren't
• 20:49
  coming
• 20:49
  my
• 20:50
  way.
• 20:50
  But
• 20:51
  then
• 20:51
  I'm
• 20:51
  like,
• 20:51
  okay,
• 20:52
  but
• 20:52
  that's
• 20:52
  the
• 20:52
  younger,
• 20:52
  weaker
• 20:53
  ones
• 20:53
  compared
• 20:54
  to
• 20:54
  the
• 20:55
  351.
• 20:56
  350
• 20:57
  year
• 20:57
  old
• 20:57
  one
• 20:57
  that's
• 20:57
  in
• 20:57
  the
• 20:57
  back
• 20:58
  that's
• 20:58
  made
• 20:58
  it
• 20:58
  through
• 20:58
  everything
• 20:59
  it's
• 20:59
  had
• 20:59
  thrown
• 20:59
  at
• 20:59
  it.
• 21:00
  That's
• 21:00
  a
• 21:00
  healthy
• 21:01
  tree.
• 21:01
  So
• 21:02
  you
• 21:02
  have
• 21:02
  to
• 21:02
  weigh
• 21:03
  those
• 21:03
  risks.
• 21:03
  And
• 21:03
  yeah,
• 21:04
  there's
• 21:04
  times
• 21:04
  that
• 21:04
  I
• 21:04
  go,
• 21:04
  ah,
• 21:05
  let's,
• 21:05
  let's
• 21:06
  go
• 21:06
  sleep
• 21:06
  on
• 21:06
  the
• 21:06
  living
• 21:07
  room
• 21:07
  couch.
• 21:07
  It's
• 21:07
  safer
• 21:08
  down
• 21:08
  there.
• 21:08
  Yeah,
• 21:09
  yeah.
• 21:09
  It's
• 21:10
  something
• 21:10
  we,
• 21:11
  you
• 21:11
  have
• 21:11
  to
• 21:11
  think
• 21:11
  about
• 21:12
  occasionally.
• 21:12
  Especially
• 21:13
  the
• 21:14
  when
• 21:14
  we
• 21:14
  deal
• 21:14
  with
• 21:14
  frequent
• 21:15
  windstorms
• 21:15
  or
• 21:15
  even
• 21:15
  think
• 21:16
  about
• 21:16
  ice
• 21:16
  storms
• 21:17
  too.
• 21:17
  We,
• 21:18
  you
• 21:18
  can
• 21:18
  have
• 21:18
  the
• 21:18
  exact
• 21:19
  same
• 21:19
  thing
• 21:19
  happen
• 21:19
  in
• 21:19
  a
• 21:19
  winter
• 21:20
  weather
• 21:20
  event
• 21:20
  for
• 21:21
  sure.
• 21:21
  Yep.
• 21:21
  It
• 21:22
  was
• 21:22
  interesting.
• 21:22
  I
• 21:22
  learned
• 21:23
  a
• 21:23
  lot
• 21:23
  about
• 21:23
  this
• 21:23
  as
• 21:24
  a
• 21:24
  kid.
• 21:24
  I
• 21:24
  was
• 21:25
  19
• 21:25
  years
• 21:25
  old
• 21:25
  living
• 21:26
  in
• 21:26
  an
• 21:26
  apartment.
• 21:26
  We
• 21:26
  had
• 21:27
  one
• 21:27
  of
• 21:27
  those
• 21:27
  big
• 21:28
  windstorms
• 21:28
  when
• 21:28
  I
• 21:28
  was
• 21:29
  growing
• 21:29
  up
• 21:29
  in
• 21:29
  eastern
• 21:29
  Washington,
• 21:30
  way
• 21:30
  away
• 21:30
  from
• 21:30
  the
• 21:31
  coast.
• 21:31
  And
• 21:32
  it
• 21:32
  took
• 21:33
  the
• 21:33
  trusses
• 21:34
  off
• 21:34
  a
• 21:34
  lot
• 21:34
  of
• 21:34
  the
• 21:34
  apartment
• 21:35
  complex
• 21:36
  because
• 21:36
  it
• 21:36
  was
• 21:36
  built
• 21:36
  in
• 21:36
  the
• 21:37
  60s

• 24:11
  I
• 24:11
  was
• 24:12
  like,
• 24:12
  okay,
• 24:13
  we're
• 24:13
  getting
• 24:13
  ourselves
• 24:14
  in
• 24:14
  trouble
• 24:14
  here.
• 24:14
  This
• 24:15
  building
• 24:15
  could
• 24:15
  come
• 24:16
  down
• 24:16
  when
• 24:16
  we
• 24:16
  see
• 24:16
  that
• 24:17
  breaking
• 24:17
  on
• 24:17
  the
• 24:17
  inside.
• 24:18
  And
• 24:18
  it
• 24:18
  didn't.
• 24:19
  But
• 24:19
  it
• 24:19
  really
• 24:20
  brought
• 24:20
  me
• 24:20
  to
• 24:20
  that
• 24:20
  thing
• 24:21
  of
• 24:21
  like,
• 24:21
  oh
• 24:21
  this
• 24:22
  we
• 24:22
  need
• 24:22
  to
• 24:22
  build
• 24:23
  better
• 24:23
  for
• 24:23
  that.
• 24:23
  Because
• 24:23
  I
• 24:24
  witnessed
• 24:24
  it
• 24:24
  as
• 24:24
  a
• 24:24
  teenager
• 24:26
  and
• 24:26
  it
• 24:26
  was
• 24:27
  crazy
• 24:27
  to
• 24:27
  see.
• 24:28
  There
• 24:29
  was.
• 24:29
  After
• 24:29
  the
• 24:29
  windstorm
• 24:30
  I
• 24:30
  walked
• 24:30
  out
• 24:30
  in
• 24:30
  the
• 24:31
  parking
• 24:31
  lot
• 24:31
  and
• 24:31
  there
• 24:31
  was
• 24:32
  18
• 24:32
  inches
• 24:32
  of
• 24:32
  roof
• 24:33
  shingles
• 24:33
  and
• 24:33
  plywood
• 24:34
  on
• 24:34
  the
• 24:34
  parking
• 24:35
  lot
• 24:35
  of
• 24:35
  the
• 24:35
  apartment
• 24:35
  complex.
• 24:36
  And
• 24:36
  siding,
• 24:37
  metal
• 24:37
  siding,
• 24:37
  it
• 24:37
  peeled
• 24:38
  it
• 24:38
  right
• 24:38
  off.
• 24:38
  And
• 24:39
  it's
• 24:39
  just
• 24:39
  fascinating
• 24:40
  to
• 24:40
  see
• 24:40
  how
• 24:40
  much
• 24:41
  damage
• 24:42
  just
• 24:42
  a
• 24:42
  little
• 24:42
  wind
• 24:42
  can
• 24:43
  do.
• 24:43
  Yeah,
• 24:43
  it
• 24:43
  is.
• 24:44
  And
• 24:44
  it's
• 24:44
  a
• 24:44
  cascade
• 24:45
  that
• 24:45
  starts
• 24:45
  too.
• 24:46
  Once
• 24:46
  it
• 24:46
  begins,
• 24:47
  you
• 24:47
  start
• 24:47
  whittling
• 24:47
  away
• 24:48
  at
• 24:48
  the
• 24:48
  different
• 24:48
  aspects.
• 24:49
  And
• 24:49
  when
• 24:49
  like
• 24:50
  any
• 24:50
  other
• 24:50
  hazard,
• 24:51
  it's
• 24:51
  looking
• 24:51
  for
• 24:51
  that
• 24:51
  weak
• 24:52
  point
• 24:52
  and
• 24:52
  you
• 24:52
  hit
• 24:53
  something.
• 24:53
  If
• 24:53
  we
• 24:53
  look
• 24:53
  at
• 24:54
  sort
• 24:54
  of
• 24:54
  the
• 24:54
  eras
• 24:54
  of
• 24:54
  construction,
• 24:55
  we
• 24:55
  go
• 24:55
  back
• 24:55
  to
• 24:55
  like
• 24:56
  really
• 24:56
  the
• 24:56
  60s,
• 24:57
  70s,
• 24:57
  80s.
• 24:58
  We
• 24:58
  started
• 24:58
  to
• 24:58
  fix
• 24:59
  this
• 24:59
  in
• 24:59
  the
• 24:59
  90s
• 25:00
  with
• 25:00
  improved
• 25:00
  codification.
• 25:02
  But
• 25:02
  that's
• 25:02
  the
• 25:02
  thing
• 25:02
  I'm
• 25:03
  looking
• 25:03
  for.
• 25:03
  Say
• 25:03
  we're
• 25:03
  doing
• 25:04
  a
• 25:04
  hurricane
• 25:04
  damage
• 25:05
  survey.
• 25:05
  You're
• 25:05
  going
• 25:05
  to
• 25:05
  see
• 25:05
  see
• 25:06
  far
• 25:06
  more
• 25:06
  like
• 25:06
  gable
• 25:07
  end
• 25:07
  wall
• 25:07
  failures
• 25:08
  in
• 25:08
  that
• 25:08
  era
• 25:08
  of
• 25:09
  construction
• 25:09
  just
• 25:10
  point
• 25:10
  blank
• 25:11
  because
• 25:11
  just
• 25:11
  how
• 25:11
  we
• 25:12
  did
• 25:12
  it
• 25:12
  and
• 25:13
  we
• 25:13
  didn't
• 25:13
  have
• 25:13
  the
• 25:14
  proper
• 25:14
  sort
• 25:15
  of
• 25:15
  codification
• 25:16
  standard
• 25:16
  to
• 25:16
  account
• 25:17
  for
• 25:17
  the
• 25:17
  loads
• 25:18
  we
• 25:18
  needed
• 25:18
  to
• 25:18
  at
• 25:19
  the
• 25:19
  time.
• 25:19
  So
• 25:19
  I
• 25:20
  always
• 25:20
  tell
• 25:20
  folks,
• 25:20
  you
• 25:21
  are
• 25:21
  if
• 25:21
  you
• 25:21
  have
• 25:21
  those
• 25:22
  homes
• 25:22
  in
• 25:22
  that
• 25:23
  era,
• 25:23
  that
• 25:23
  60s,
• 25:24
  70s,
• 25:24
  80s,
• 25:24
  maybe
• 25:25
  the
• 25:25
  early
• 25:25
  90s,
• 25:26
  you're
• 25:26
  the
• 25:26
  perfect
• 25:27
  candidate
• 25:27
  for
• 25:27
  any
• 25:27
  of
• 25:27
  these
• 25:28
  roof
• 25:28
  retrofits.
• 25:28
  The
• 25:29
  fortified
• 25:29
  roof
• 25:29
  program
• 25:30
  that
• 25:30
  we
• 25:30
  talk
• 25:30
  about.
• 25:31
  That's
• 25:31
  for
• 25:31
  you.
• 25:32
  And
• 25:32
  it's
• 25:32
  a
• 25:33
  great
• 25:33
  time
• 25:33
  if
• 25:33
  you're
• 25:33
  re
• 25:33
  roofing
• 25:34
  to
• 25:34
  go
• 25:34
  ahead
• 25:35
  and
• 25:35
  do
• 25:35
  something
• 25:35
  to
• 25:36
  strengthen
• 25:36
  that.
• 25:37
  Say
• 25:37
  you
• 25:37
  have
• 25:37
  a
• 25:37
  home
• 25:38
  built
• 25:38
  under
• 25:38
  the
• 25:39
  modern
• 25:39
  codes,
• 25:39
  you're
• 25:40
  going
• 25:40
  to
• 25:40
  have
• 25:40
  an
• 25:40
  awful
• 25:40
  lot
• 25:41
  of
• 25:41
  protection
• 25:41
  already
• 25:41
  built
• 25:42
  in.
• 25:42
  Especially
• 25:42
  if
• 25:43
  you're
• 25:43
  in
• 25:43
  some
• 25:43
  of
• 25:43
  the
• 25:43
  coastal
• 25:44
  areas.
• 25:44
  You
• 25:44
  mentioned
• 25:45
  the
• 25:45
  west
• 25:45
  coast,
• 25:45
  we
• 25:46
  still
• 25:46
  got
• 25:46
  a.
• 25:46
  We
• 25:47
  had
• 25:47
  some
• 25:47
  work
• 25:47
  on
• 25:47
  the
• 25:48
  design
• 25:48
  level
• 25:49
  and
• 25:49
  just
• 25:49
  some
• 25:50
  of
• 25:50
  those
• 25:50
  loss
• 25:50
  prevention
• 25:51
  factors
• 25:51
  that
• 25:51
  have
• 25:52
  made
• 25:52
  it
• 25:52
  in
• 25:52
  the
• 25:52
  way
• 25:52
  into
• 25:53
  the
• 25:53
  hurricane
• 25:53
  prone
• 25:54
  coast
• 25:54
  codes.
• 25:55
  But
• 25:56
  a
• 25:56
  lot
• 25:56
  of
• 25:56
  that
• 25:56
  we
• 25:57
  look
• 25:57
  at
• 25:57
  it
• 25:57
  was
• 25:57
  Hurricane
• 25:58
  Ian.
• 25:58
  We
• 25:59
  looked
• 25:59
  at
• 25:59
  about
• 25:59
  450
• 26:00
  some
• 26:00
  odd
• 26:01
  homes
• 26:01
  built
• 26:01
  under
• 26:01
  that
• 26:02
  modern
• 26:02
  Florida
• 26:02
  building
• 26:03
  code.
• 26:03
  So
• 26:03
  2002
• 26:04
  to
• 26:04
  present
• 26:04
  day,
• 26:05
  not
• 26:05
  a
• 26:05
  single
• 26:05
  one
• 26:06
  had
• 26:06
  structural
• 26:06
  damage.
• 26:07
  Yeah,
• 26:07
  we've
• 26:08
  almost
• 26:08
  eliminated
• 26:09
  that
• 26:09
  because
• 26:10
  we've
• 26:10
  taken
• 26:10
  all
• 26:10
  this
• 26:11
  knowledge
• 26:11
  and
• 26:11
  put
• 26:11
  it
• 26:11
  into
• 26:11
  practice.
• 26:12
  So
• 26:12
  can
• 26:12
  we
• 26:12
  do
• 26:12
  that
• 26:12
  elsewhere?
• 26:13
  I
• 26:13
  think
• 26:13
  that's
• 26:13
  the
• 26:14
  message.
• 26:14
  I
• 26:15
  tell
• 26:15
  you
• 26:15
  what,
• 26:15
  when
• 26:15
  I
• 26:15
  first
• 26:16
  met
• 26:16
  you
• 26:16
  guys,
• 26:16
  it
• 26:17
  was
• 26:17
  probably
• 26:17
  five
• 26:18
  years
• 26:18
  ago
• 26:18
  or
• 26:18
  so.
• 26:19
  Somewhere
• 26:19
  in
• 26:19
  that
• 26:19
  time
• 26:20
  I
• 26:20
  was
• 26:20
  out
• 26:20
  as
• 26:21
  the
• 26:21
  host
• 26:21
  at
• 26:21
  the
• 26:22
  Southeastern
• 26:22
  building
• 26:22
  Conference
• 26:23
  on
• 26:23
  the
• 26:23
  demo
• 26:24
  stage.
• 26:24
  And
• 26:24
  I
• 26:24
  was
• 26:25
  the
• 26:25
  kind
• 26:25
  of
• 26:25
  the
• 26:26
  host
• 26:26
  of
• 26:26
  that
• 26:26
  stage
• 26:27
  and
• 26:27
  was
• 26:27
  helping
• 26:28
  with
• 26:28
  all
• 26:28
  these
• 26:28
  different
• 26:28
  things.
• 26:29
  And
• 26:29
  I
• 26:30
  know
• 26:30
  a
• 26:30
  lot
• 26:30
  about
• 26:30
  building
• 26:31
  construction,
• 26:32
  but
• 26:32
  looking
• 26:32
  at
• 26:33
  what
• 26:33
  coastal
• 26:34
  states
• 26:34
  over
• 26:35
  there
• 26:35
  have
• 26:35
  to
• 26:35
  do
• 26:36
  to
• 26:36
  meet
• 26:37
  current
• 26:37
  code
• 26:38
  back
• 26:38
  then,
• 26:39
  I'm
• 26:39
  like,
• 26:40
  this
• 26:40
  was
• 26:40
  so
• 26:41
  foreign
• 26:41
  to
• 26:42
  me
• 26:42
  when
• 26:43
  we
• 26:43
  first
• 26:43
  started
• 26:43
  having
• 26:44
  conversations.
• 26:44
  I'm
• 26:44
  like,
• 26:45
  you're
• 26:45
  tying
• 26:45
  the
• 26:46
  top
• 26:46
  plate
• 26:46
  into
• 26:46
  the
• 26:47
  concrete
• 26:47
  with
• 26:48
  cables
• 26:49
  coming
• 26:49
  up.
• 26:49
  And
• 26:50
  strap.
• 26:50
  Wow.
• 26:51
  Okay.
• 26:52
  It
• 26:52
  was
• 26:52
  a
• 26:53
  whole
• 26:53
  new
• 26:53
  world
• 26:53
  from
• 26:53
  a
• 26:54
  West
• 26:54
  coast
• 26:54
  guy.
• 26:55
  And
• 26:55
  I
• 26:55
  know
• 26:55
  the
• 26:55
  rest
• 26:56
  of
• 26:56
  the
• 26:56
  country
• 26:56
  that
• 26:57
  doesn't
• 26:57
  live
• 26:57
  or
• 26:57
  build
• 26:58
  down
• 26:58
  there
• 26:58
  would
• 26:59
  be
• 26:59
  doing
• 26:59
  the
• 26:59
  same
• 26:59
  thing
• 27:00
  going,
• 27:00
  wow,
• 27:01
  okay.
• 27:01
  That's
• 27:02
  a
• 27:02
  whole
• 27:02
  new
• 27:02
  level
• 27:02
  of
• 27:03
  construction
• 27:04
  that
• 27:04
  I
• 27:04
  think
• 27:04
  would
• 27:04
  make
• 27:05
  a
• 27:05
  difference
• 27:05
  whether
• 27:05
  you're
• 27:06
  in
• 27:06
  an
• 27:06
  earthquake
• 27:07
  or
• 27:07
  if
• 27:07
  you're
• 27:07
  in
• 27:07
  a
• 27:08
  hurricane
• 27:08
  or
• 27:09
  a
• 27:09
  tornado
• 27:09
  or
• 27:09
  anything
• 27:10
  else.
• 27:10
  How
• 27:10
  many
• 27:10
  times
• 27:10
  do
• 27:11
  we
• 27:11
  see.
• 27:11
  And
• 27:11
  I
• 27:11
  love
• 27:12
  old
• 27:12
  houses.
• 27:12
  I
• 27:13
  have
• 27:13
  no
• 27:13
  disrespect
• 27:14
  to
• 27:14
  them.
• 27:14
  And
• 27:15
  a
• 27:15
  lot
• 27:15
  of
• 27:15
  people
• 27:15
  will
• 27:15
  go,
• 27:16
  hey,
• 27:16
  they
• 27:17
  sure
• 27:17
  don't
• 27:17
  build
• 27:17
  them
• 27:18
  like
• 27:18
  they
• 27:18
  used
• 27:18
  to.
• 27:19
  And
• 27:19
  it
• 27:19
  shows
• 27:19
  the
• 27:19
  house
• 27:20
  out
• 27:20
  in
• 27:20
  the
• 27:20
  middle
• 27:20
  of
• 27:20
  the
• 27:20
  street
• 27:21
  from
• 27:21
  when
• 27:21
  the
• 27:21
  tornado
• 27:22
  hurricane
• 27:22
  came
• 27:22
  through.
• 27:23
  And
• 27:23
  I'm
• 27:23
  like,
• 27:23
  yeah,
• 27:23
  the
• 27:24
  house
• 27:24
  wasn't
• 27:24
  attached
• 27:24
  to
• 27:25
  the
• 27:25
  foundation,
• 27:25
  so
• 27:26
  it's
• 27:26
  out
• 27:26
  in
• 27:26
  the
• 27:26
  street.
• 27:27
  And
• 27:27
  the
• 27:27
  one
• 27:27
  that
• 27:27
  was
• 27:27
  built
• 27:28
  20
• 27:28
  years
• 27:29
  ago
• 27:29
  is
• 27:29
  still
• 27:29
  sitting
• 27:30
  there.
• 27:30
  There
• 27:31
  weren't
• 27:31
  engineers
• 27:31
  back
• 27:31
  in
• 27:32
  the
• 27:32
  20s
• 27:32
  building
• 27:32
  these
• 27:32
  houses
• 27:33
  and
• 27:33
  signing
• 27:33
  off
• 27:34
  on
• 27:34
  plants.
• 27:34
  Yeah.
• 27:35
  And
• 27:35
  we
• 27:36
  could.
• 27:36
  The
• 27:36
  load
• 27:37
  path
• 27:37
  from
• 27:37
  a
• 27:37
  tornado
• 27:38
  perspective
• 27:38
  has
• 27:38
  become
• 27:39
  like,
• 27:39
  one
• 27:39
  of.
• 27:39
  It's
• 27:40
  the
• 27:40
  most
• 27:40
  critical
• 27:40
  aspect.
• 27:41
  And
• 27:41
  I
• 27:41
  think
• 27:41
  about
• 27:41
  when
• 27:42
  the
• 27:42
  city
• 27:42
  of
• 27:42
  Moore
• 27:42
  in
• 27:43
  Oklahoma
• 27:43
  put
• 27:43
  in
• 27:43
  their
• 27:44
  building
• 27:44
  code
• 27:45
  following,
• 27:45
  like,
• 27:45
  their
• 27:46
  fourth
• 27:46
  violent
• 27:47
  tornado
• 27:47
  in
• 27:48
  two
• 27:48
  decades,
• 27:49
  there
• 27:49
  was
• 27:49
  the
• 27:49
  same
• 27:50
  sort
• 27:50
  of
• 27:50
  response,
• 27:50
  like,
• 27:51
  hey,
• 27:51
  what
• 27:51
  is
• 27:51
  this?
• 27:52
  Like,
• 27:52
  what
• 27:52
  do
• 27:52
  we
• 27:52
  do?
• 27:53
  And
• 27:53
  then
• 27:53
  if
• 27:53
  you
• 27:53
  go
• 27:54
  look
• 27:54
  at
• 27:54
  a
• 27:54
  couple
• 27:55
  of
• 27:55
  the
• 27:55
  tornadoes
• 27:56
  that
• 27:56
  Hurricane
• 27:56
  Milton
• 27:57
  caused,
• 27:58
  we
• 27:58
  had
• 27:58
  one
• 27:58
  of
• 27:58
  these
• 27:58
  modern
• 27:59
  Florida
• 27:59
  homes
• 27:59
  where
• 28:00
  the
• 28:00
  tornado
• 28:01
  deposited
• 28:01
  a
• 28:01
  construction
• 28:02
  dumpster
• 28:03
  on
• 28:03
  the
• 28:03
  roof
• 28:03
  system.
• 28:04
  And
• 28:04
  it
• 28:04
  was
• 28:05
  structurally
• 28:05
  okay.
• 28:06
  Like,
• 28:06
  there
• 28:07
  was
• 28:07
  obviously
• 28:08
  some
• 28:08
  damage.
• 28:09
  But
• 28:09
  from.
• 28:10
  You
• 28:10
  have
• 28:10
  a
• 28:10
  home
• 28:11
  to
• 28:11
  come
• 28:12
  back
• 28:12
  to
• 28:12
  after
• 28:12
  a
• 28:13
  tornado
• 28:13
  dropped
• 28:14
  a
• 28:14
  dumpster
• 28:15
  on
• 28:15
  top
• 28:15
  of
• 28:15
  your
• 28:15
  house.
• 28:16
  That
• 28:16
  was
• 28:16
  not
• 28:16
  a
• 28:16
  small
• 28:17
  dumpster,
• 28:17
  by
• 28:17
  the
• 28:17
  way.
• 28:17
  Oh,
• 28:18
  it
• 28:18
  was
• 28:19
  huge.
• 28:19
  That
• 28:20
  was
• 28:20
  not
• 28:20
  a
• 28:20
  little
• 28:21
  convenience
• 28:21
  store
• 28:21
  dumpster.
• 28:22
  That
• 28:22
  was
• 28:22
  something
• 28:22
  out
• 28:23
  in
• 28:23
  front
• 28:23
  of
• 28:23
  a
• 28:23
  job
• 28:23
  site.
• 28:24
  Yeah,
• 28:24
  you
• 28:24
  could
• 28:25
  imagine
• 28:25
  that
• 28:25
  could
• 28:25
  have
• 28:25
  been
• 28:25
  a
• 28:26
  vehicle
• 28:26
  easily
• 28:27
  sliding.
• 28:28
  It
• 28:28
  was
• 28:28
  a
• 28:29
  kind
• 28:29
  of
• 28:29
  a
• 28:29
  very
• 28:29
  interesting
• 28:30
  proof
• 28:30
  point
• 28:30
  to
• 28:31
  that.
• 28:31
  But
• 28:32
  you
• 28:32
  saw
• 28:32
  how
• 28:33
  these
• 28:33
  things
• 28:33
  can
• 28:33
  perform
• 28:34
  if
• 28:34
  we
• 28:34
  just
• 28:34
  take
• 28:34
  that,
• 28:35
  translate
• 28:35
  that
• 28:35
  knowledge
• 28:36
  over
• 28:36
  to
• 28:36
  some
• 28:37
  of
• 28:37
  the
• 28:37
  other
• 28:37
  hazards.
• 28:38
  And
• 28:38
  you
• 28:38
  mentioned
• 28:38
  seismic.
• 28:39
  That's
• 28:39
  one
• 28:39
  of
• 28:39
  the
• 28:39
  more
• 28:40
  successful
• 28:40
  retrofit
• 28:41
  programs
• 28:41
  too,
• 28:41
  especially
• 28:42
  in
• 28:42
  the
• 28:42
  state
• 28:42
  of
• 28:42
  California.
• 28:43
  Some
• 28:43
  of
• 28:43
  the
• 28:43
  seismic
• 28:44
  retrofits,
• 28:45
  but
• 28:45
  if
• 28:45
  you
• 28:45
  rewind
• 28:46
  the
• 28:46
  clock
• 28:46
  like
• 28:46
  way,
• 28:47
  way
• 28:47
  back.
• 28:47
  And
• 28:47
  I
• 28:47
  was
• 28:47
  noticing
• 28:48
  this
• 28:48
  was
• 28:49
  at
• 28:49
  the
• 28:49
  Smithsonian,
• 28:50
  the
• 28:50
  Museum
• 28:50
  of
• 28:50
  American
• 28:50
  History,
• 28:51
  and
• 28:51
  they
• 28:51
  have
• 28:51
  an
• 28:51
  early
• 28:52
  colonial
• 28:53
  house
• 28:53
  that's
• 28:53
  actually
• 28:54
  reassembled
• 28:55
  inside
• 28:55
  the
• 28:55
  museum.
• 28:55
  And
• 28:56
  I'm
• 28:56
  looking
• 28:56
  at
• 28:56
  of
• 28:56
  course,
• 28:57
  all
• 28:57
  the
• 28:57
  connections.
• 28:57
  Right.
• 28:58
  Like
• 28:58
  13
• 28:59
  years
• 28:59
  ago
• 28:59
  when
• 29:00
  I
• 29:00
  started
• 29:00
  IBHS,
• 29:00
  I
• 29:01
  wouldn't
• 29:01
  go
• 29:01
  stare
• 29:01
  at
• 29:01
  this
• 29:02
  stuff
• 29:02
  readily.
• 29:02
  Oh,
• 29:03
  now
• 29:03
  you're
• 29:03
  geeking
• 29:03
  out.
• 29:03
  But.
• 29:04
  Yeah,
• 29:04
  but
• 29:04
  the
• 29:04
  way
• 29:05
  with
• 29:05
  the
• 29:05
  type
• 29:06
  of
• 29:06
  connections
• 29:06
  back
• 29:06
  then,
• 29:07
  you
• 29:07
  created
• 29:07
  a
• 29:07
  natural
• 29:08
  load
• 29:08
  path.
• 29:09
  But
• 29:09
  as
• 29:09
  we
• 29:09
  progressed
• 29:10
  all
• 29:10
  the
• 29:10
  way
• 29:10
  to
• 29:10
  when
• 29:11
  mass
• 29:11
  production
• 29:12
  of
• 29:12
  homes
• 29:12
  started,
• 29:13
  we
• 29:13
  got
• 29:13
  away
• 29:13
  from
• 29:14
  a
• 29:14
  lot
• 29:14
  of
• 29:14
  that
• 29:14
  because
• 29:15
  on
• 29:15
  some
• 29:15
  of
• 29:15
  it's
• 29:16
  highly
• 29:17
  skilled
• 29:17
  carpentry
• 29:18
  kind
• 29:18
  of
• 29:18
  work.
• 29:18
  Sure,
• 29:19
  I
• 29:19
  wouldn't
• 29:19
  even
• 29:20
  attempt
• 29:20
  to
• 29:20
  do
• 29:20
  that.
• 29:21
  But
• 29:21
  now
• 29:21
  we've
• 29:22
  caught
• 29:22
  up
• 29:22
  with
• 29:23
  modern
• 29:23
  techniques
• 29:24
  that
• 29:24
  do
• 29:24
  save
• 29:24
  on
• 29:25
  the
• 29:25
  labor
• 29:25
  and
• 29:25
  that
• 29:26
  kind
• 29:26
  of
• 29:26
  thing
• 29:26
  to
• 29:26
  be
• 29:27
  able
• 29:27
  to
• 29:27
  accomplish
• 29:27
  the
• 29:28
  exact
• 29:28
  same
• 29:29
  thing
• 29:29
  like
• 29:29
  we
• 29:30
  were
• 29:30
  doing
• 29:30
  a
• 29:31
  century
• 29:31
  plus
• 29:32
  more
• 29:32
  than
• 29:32
  that
• 29:33
  now
• 29:33
  these
• 29:33
  days
• 29:34
  ago.
• 29:34
  But
• 29:35
  it's
• 29:35
  just
• 29:35
  these
• 29:36
  factors
• 29:36
  that
• 29:37
  can
• 29:37
  actually
• 29:37
  keep
• 29:37
  a
• 29:37
  structure
• 29:38
  together.
• 29:38
  That
• 29:39
  to
• 29:39
  be
• 29:39
  honest,
• 29:40
  if
• 29:40
  we
• 29:40
  put
• 29:40
  them
• 29:40
  together
• 29:41
  like
• 29:41
  the
• 29:41
  doom
• 29:42
  and
• 29:42
  gloom,
• 29:42
  they
• 29:42
  don't
• 29:43
  cost
• 29:43
  that
• 29:43
  much
• 29:43
  in
• 29:43
  the
• 29:44
  grand
• 29:44
  scheme.
• 29:45
  But
• 29:45
  we've
• 29:45
  hit
• 29:46
  it.
• 29:46
  Like
• 29:46
  there's
• 29:46
  some
• 29:47
  retrofits
• 29:47
  that
• 29:47
  we
• 29:48
  have
• 29:48
  and
• 29:48
  we
• 29:48
  have
• 29:48
  to.
• 29:49
  Folks,
• 29:49
  in
• 29:49
  that
• 29:49
  era
• 29:50
  of
• 29:50
  construction,
• 29:51
  you
• 29:51
  are
• 29:51
  the
• 29:51
  candidates
• 29:52
  for.
• 29:52
  You
• 29:52
  can
• 29:53
  make
• 29:53
  a
• 29:53
  big
• 29:53
  difference
• 29:53
  with.
• 29:54
  Just
• 29:54
  when
• 29:54
  you
• 29:54
  reroof
• 29:55
  going
• 29:55
  to
• 29:55
  something
• 29:55
  like
• 29:55
  the
• 29:55
  fortified
• 29:56
  system,
• 29:57
  you
• 29:57
  get
• 29:57
  a
• 29:57
  good
• 29:57
  shot
• 29:58
  to
• 29:58
  do
• 29:58
  something
• 29:58
  really
• 29:59
  good
• 29:59
  to
• 29:59
  your
• 29:59
  home.
• 30:00
  Oh
• 30:00
  yeah,
• 30:00
  my
• 30:00
  house
• 30:01
  was
• 30:01
  built
• 30:01
  in
• 30:01
  77.
• 30:02
  It's
• 30:02
  a
• 30:02
  perfect
• 30:02
  candidate.
• 30:03
  And
• 30:03
  I
• 30:04
  am
• 30:04
  happy
• 30:04
  though.
• 30:05
  When
• 30:05
  I
• 30:05
  got
• 30:05
  into
• 30:05
  it
• 30:05
  and
• 30:05
  looking
• 30:06
  around,
• 30:06
  I'm
• 30:06
  like,
• 30:06
  oh,
• 30:07
  cool.
• 30:08
  Trusses
• 30:09
  are
• 30:09
  clipped
• 30:10
  down
• 30:10
  to
• 30:10
  the
• 30:11
  top
• 30:11
  plate.
• 30:12
  I'm
• 30:12
  like,
• 30:12
  somebody
• 30:13
  went
• 30:13
  the
• 30:13
  extra
• 30:13
  mile
• 30:14
  at
• 30:14
  the
• 30:14
  time.
• 30:15
  Yeah.
• 30:15
  I
• 30:15
  was
• 30:15
  surprised
• 30:16
  when
• 30:16
  we
• 30:16
  bought
• 30:16
  our
• 30:16
  house
• 30:17
  in
• 30:17
  South
• 30:17
  Carolina,
• 30:18
  our
• 30:18
  first
• 30:19
  one
• 30:19
  and
• 30:20
  we
• 30:20
  saw
• 30:21
  one,
• 30:21
  they
• 30:21
  actually
• 30:22
  did
• 30:22
  the
• 30:22
  trust
• 30:22
  to
• 30:23
  walk
• 30:23
  in
• 30:23
  action
• 30:23
  clips.
• 30:24
  Missed
• 30:24
  one.
• 30:25
  Of
• 30:25
  course,
• 30:25
  my
• 30:25
  wife,
• 30:25
  who's
• 30:26
  also
• 30:26
  an
• 30:26
  engineer,
• 30:27
  makes
• 30:28
  the
• 30:28
  calls.
• 30:29
  The
• 30:29
  builder.
• 30:29
  We
• 30:29
  weren't
• 30:29
  the
• 30:29
  first
• 30:30
  owner
• 30:30
  either,
• 30:31
  but
• 30:31
  we
• 30:31
  were
• 30:31
  able
• 30:32
  to
• 30:32
  actually
• 30:32
  get
• 30:32
  the
• 30:32
  original
• 30:33
  builder
• 30:33
  to
• 30:34
  come
• 30:34
  out
• 30:34
  and
• 30:34
  deal
• 30:34
  with
• 30:34
  it.
• 30:35
  But
• 30:35
  a
• 30:36
  typical
• 30:36
  homeowner
• 30:36
  may
• 30:37
  not.
• 30:37
  They
• 30:37
  may
• 30:37
  not
• 30:37
  know
• 30:37
  what
• 30:37
  they're
• 30:38
  looking
• 30:38
  for
• 30:38
  in
• 30:38
  that
• 30:38
  inspection.
• 30:39
  But
• 30:39
  so
• 30:40
  as
• 30:40
  we
• 30:40
  improve
• 30:41
  codes,
• 30:41
  bringing
• 30:42
  that
• 30:42
  side,
• 30:42
  the
• 30:42
  inspection
• 30:43
  process
• 30:43
  along
• 30:44
  is
• 30:44
  just
• 30:44
  as
• 30:44
  important.
• 30:45
  Yeah,
• 30:45
  no
• 30:45
  question.
• 30:46
  What
• 30:46
  do
• 30:46
  you
• 30:47
  see
• 30:47
  in.
• 30:47
  I'm
• 30:47
  out
• 30:47
  in
• 30:47
  the
• 30:47
  west
• 30:47
  coast
• 30:48
  here
• 30:48
  and
• 30:48
  now
• 30:48
  we're
• 30:49
  seeing
• 30:49
  this
• 30:49
  in
• 30:49
  the
• 30:49
  Northeast
• 30:50
  now
• 30:50
  too
• 30:50
  with
• 30:51
  wildfires.
• 30:51
  But
• 30:52
  I
• 30:52
  know
• 30:52
  you
• 30:52
  guys
• 30:53
  have
• 30:53
  been
• 30:53
  really
• 30:53
  diving
• 30:54
  in
• 30:54
  head
• 30:54
  deep
• 30:54
  into
• 30:55
  Wildfire
• 30:55
  situations,
• 30:56
  where
• 30:57
  I
• 30:57
  know
• 30:57
  you
• 30:57
  were
• 30:57
  working
• 30:58
  on
• 30:58
  the
• 30:58
  local
• 30:59
  stuff,
• 30:59
  even,
• 30:59
  which
• 31:00
  was
• 31:00
  the
• 31:00
  hurricane
• 31:00
  stuff.
• 31:01
  But
• 31:01
  wildfire
• 31:01
  is
• 31:02
  a
• 31:02
  whole
• 31:02
  other
• 31:02
  different
• 31:03
  beast.
• 31:04
  It
• 31:04
  is.
• 31:05
  And
• 31:05
  IBHS's
• 31:06
  Wildfire
• 31:06
  Research
• 31:07
  Program
• 31:07
  goes
• 31:08
  back
• 31:08
  really
• 31:08
  to
• 31:08
  when
• 31:09
  our
• 31:09
  research
• 31:09
  center
• 31:10
  opened
• 31:10
  in
• 31:10
  2010.
• 31:11
  But
• 31:12
  really
• 31:12
  it
• 31:12
  was
• 31:13
  the
• 31:13
  fires
• 31:13
  in
• 31:13
  the
• 31:13
  west
• 31:14
  of
• 31:14
  2017,
• 31:14
  2018
• 31:15
  that
• 31:15
  turned
• 31:15
  it
• 31:16
  into.
• 31:16
  I
• 31:16
  say
• 31:17
  the
• 31:17
  focus
• 31:18
  got
• 31:18
  put
• 31:18
  on
• 31:18
  it
• 31:18
  from
• 31:18
  an
• 31:19
  insurance
• 31:19
  and
• 31:19
  loss
• 31:19
  perspective,
• 31:20
  because
• 31:20
  for
• 31:20
  the
• 31:21
  very
• 31:21
  first
• 31:21
  time,
• 31:22
  you
• 31:22
  started
• 31:22
  having
• 31:23
  wildfires
• 31:23
  that
• 31:24
  moved
• 31:24
  into
• 31:24
  our
• 31:25
  suburbs.
• 31:26
  It
• 31:26
  created
• 31:27
  loss
• 31:27
  events
• 31:28
  that
• 31:28
  are
• 31:28
  on
• 31:28
  par
• 31:29
  with
• 31:29
  hurricanes.
• 31:30
  Of
• 31:30
  course,
• 31:31
  when
• 31:31
  we're
• 31:31
  looking
• 31:31
  at
• 31:32
  how
• 31:32
  we
• 31:32
  manage
• 31:32
  risk
• 31:33
  across
• 31:33
  the
• 31:33
  United
• 31:34
  States,
• 31:34
  that's
• 31:34
  going
• 31:34
  to
• 31:34
  make
• 31:35
  anybody
• 31:35
  who's
• 31:35
  insuring
• 31:36
  that
• 31:36
  risk
• 31:36
  step
• 31:37
  up
• 31:37
  and
• 31:37
  look
• 31:37
  at
• 31:38
  it
• 31:38
  like,
• 31:39
  whoa,
• 31:39
  what
• 31:39
  have
• 31:39
  we
• 31:39
  done?
• 31:40
  And
• 31:41
  you
• 31:41
  realize
• 31:41
  over
• 31:42
  some
• 31:42
  of
• 31:43
  it
• 31:43
  dates
• 31:44
  back
• 31:44
  to
• 31:44
  our
• 31:44
  policies
• 31:45
  of
• 31:45
  wildfire
• 31:46
  suppression.
• 31:47
  So
• 31:47
  we
• 31:47
  weren't
• 31:47
  telling
• 31:48
  folks
• 31:48
  that
• 31:48
  this
• 31:48
  really
• 31:49
  was
• 31:49
  a
• 31:49
  threat.
• 31:50
  We
• 31:50
  started
• 31:50
  building
• 31:51
  our
• 31:51
  typical
• 31:51
  suburban
• 31:52
  neighborhoods
• 31:52
  into
• 31:53
  these
• 31:53
  wildlands
• 31:53
  that
• 31:54
  already
• 31:54
  had
• 31:54
  fire
• 31:55
  as
• 31:55
  part
• 31:55
  of
• 31:55
  their
• 31:55
  ecosystems.
• 31:56
  Like
• 31:56
  fire
• 31:57
  was
• 31:57
  meant
• 31:57
  to
• 31:57
  be
• 31:57
  there
• 31:58
  there.
• 31:58
  Yeah.
• 31:58
  Vegetation
• 31:59
  had
• 31:59
  evolved
• 32:00
  to
• 32:00
  use
• 32:01
  fire
• 32:01
  for
• 32:02
  benefit.
• 32:03
  And
• 32:03
  now
• 32:03
  we've
• 32:03
  built
• 32:04
  neighborhoods
• 32:04
  where
• 32:04
  we
• 32:05
  put
• 32:06
  houses
• 32:06
  that
• 32:06
  have
• 32:06
  very
• 32:07
  little
• 32:07
  exterior
• 32:08
  fire
• 32:08
  resistance
• 32:08
  to
• 32:09
  them,
• 32:09
  and
• 32:09
  then
• 32:10
  we
• 32:10
  connect
• 32:10
  them
• 32:10
  with
• 32:10
  fuels,
• 32:11
  whether
• 32:11
  that's
• 32:12
  plants,
• 32:13
  whether
• 32:13
  that's
• 32:14
  our
• 32:14
  wood
• 32:14
  fences.
• 32:15
  I
• 32:15
  was
• 32:15
  doing
• 32:15
  some
• 32:15
  work
• 32:15
  even
• 32:16
  this
• 32:16
  morning
• 32:16
  looking
• 32:16
  at
• 32:17
  the
• 32:17
  Marshall
• 32:17
  fire
• 32:18
  in
• 32:18
  Colorado,
• 32:19
  and
• 32:19
  you
• 32:19
  had
• 32:19
  one
• 32:20
  of
• 32:20
  the
• 32:20
  neighborhoods,
• 32:20
  like
• 32:21
  96%
• 32:22
  of
• 32:22
  homes
• 32:22
  were
• 32:22
  actually
• 32:23
  physically
• 32:23
  connected
• 32:24
  by
• 32:25
  wooden
• 32:25
  privacy
• 32:25
  fences,
• 32:26
  because
• 32:26
  we
• 32:26
  like
• 32:27
  them,
• 32:27
  but
• 32:28
  it
• 32:28
  was
• 32:28
  the
• 32:28
  dominant
• 32:29
  source
• 32:29
  of
• 32:29
  fire
• 32:30
  to
• 32:30
  each
• 32:30
  home.
• 32:31
  In
• 32:31
  fact,
• 32:31
  each
• 32:31
  of
• 32:31
  these
• 32:32
  homes,
• 32:32
  from
• 32:32
  a
• 32:33
  defensible
• 32:33
  space
• 32:33
  perspective,
• 32:34
  was
• 32:34
  actually
• 32:34
  pretty
• 32:35
  good.
• 32:35
  They
• 32:35
  didn't
• 32:36
  have
• 32:36
  a
• 32:36
  lot
• 32:36
  of
• 32:36
  vegetation
• 32:37
  that
• 32:37
  connected
• 32:37
  them.
• 32:38
  But
• 32:39
  guess
• 32:39
  what?
• 32:39
  Fire
• 32:40
  found
• 32:40
  that
• 32:40
  path
• 32:41
  through
• 32:41
  the
• 32:41
  fence.
• 32:42
  And
• 32:42
  so
• 32:42
  we're
• 32:42
  looking
• 32:42
  at
• 32:43
  what
• 32:43
  are
• 32:43
  the
• 32:43
  ways
• 32:43
  one,
• 32:44
  we
• 32:44
  can
• 32:44
  do
• 32:44
  better
• 32:44
  on
• 32:45
  the
• 32:45
  exterior.
• 32:46
  Two,
• 32:47
  how
• 32:47
  do
• 32:47
  we
• 32:47
  landscape
• 32:48
  to
• 32:49
  reduce
• 32:49
  that
• 32:50
  fire
• 32:50
  pathway
• 32:51
  of
• 32:52
  fire
• 32:52
  going
• 32:52
  structure
• 32:52
  to
• 32:53
  structure?
• 32:53
  Because
• 32:54
  right
• 32:54
  now
• 32:55
  there's
• 32:55
  places
• 32:56
  where
• 32:56
  if
• 32:56
  you
• 32:56
  just
• 32:56
  put
• 32:57
  fire
• 32:57
  into
• 32:57
  a
• 32:57
  neighborhood
• 32:58
  under
• 32:58
  those
• 32:59
  wind
• 32:59
  conditions
• 32:59
  like
• 32:59
  you
• 33:00
  guys
• 33:00
  just
• 33:00
  dealt
• 33:00
  with
• 33:01
  and
• 33:01
  put
• 33:02
  in
• 33:02
  a
• 33:02
  drought,
• 33:03
  and
• 33:03
  that's
• 33:04
  going
• 33:04
  to
• 33:04
  be
• 33:04
  a
• 33:04
  catastrophe.
• 33:05
  The
• 33:06
  outcome
• 33:06
  is
• 33:06
  almost
• 33:07
  certain.
• 33:08
  So
• 33:08
  how
• 33:08
  do
• 33:08
  we
• 33:08
  stop
• 33:08
  that?
• 33:09
  And
• 33:09
  that's
• 33:09
  been
• 33:09
  the
• 33:10
  focus
• 33:10
  of
• 33:10
  our
• 33:10

• 33:10
  Just
• 33:11

  change

• 36:33
  Let's
• 36:33
  get
• 36:34
  back
• 36:34
  to
• 36:34
  our
• 36:34
  conversation
• 36:35
  with
• 36:35
  Ian.
• 36:35
  And
• 36:36
  we've.
• 36:36
  Over
• 36:36
  a
• 36:36
  century.
• 36:37
  Think
• 36:38
  about
• 36:38
  the.
• 36:39
  How
• 36:39
  we've
• 36:39
  built
• 36:40
  cities
• 36:41
  of
• 36:41
  the
• 36:41
  United
• 36:41
  States
• 36:42
  over
• 36:42
  a
• 36:43
  century.
• 36:44
  This
• 36:44
  was
• 36:44
  a
• 36:45
  problem
• 36:45
  in
• 36:45
  the
• 36:45
  making
• 36:46
  that
• 36:46
  I
• 36:46
  hesitate
• 36:47
  to
• 36:47
  say.
• 36:47
  We
• 36:48
  didn't
• 36:48
  stick
• 36:48
  our
• 36:48
  head
• 36:49
  in
• 36:49
  the
• 36:49
  sand.
• 36:50
  It
• 36:50
  just.
• 36:51
  We
• 36:51
  forgot
• 36:52
  about
• 36:52
  it.
• 36:53
  We
• 36:53
  just
• 36:53
  forgot
• 36:54
  and
• 36:55
  thought
• 36:55
  we
• 36:55
  had
• 36:55
  solved
• 36:56
  it.
• 36:56
  We've
• 36:56
  done
• 36:56
  so
• 36:56
  much
• 36:57
  work
• 36:57
  on
• 36:57
  urban
• 36:58
  fires
• 36:58
  and
• 36:58
  our
• 36:58
  building
• 36:59
  codes
• 36:59
  have
• 36:59
  done
• 36:59
  so
• 37:00
  well
• 37:00
  on
• 37:00
  interior
• 37:01
  fire.
• 37:01
  We
• 37:01
  just.
• 37:02
  For
• 37:02
  God.
• 37:03
  And
• 37:03
  then
• 37:03
  now
• 37:04
  throw
• 37:04
  in
• 37:05
  a
• 37:05
  little
• 37:05
  bit
• 37:05
  of
• 37:05
  the
• 37:06
  climate
• 37:06
  element,
• 37:06
  too,
• 37:07
  and
• 37:07
  this
• 37:08
  happens.
• 37:08
  And
• 37:08
  unfortunately,
• 37:10
  we
• 37:10
  humans
• 37:11
  start
• 37:11
  most
• 37:12
  wildfires
• 37:12
  these
• 37:13
  days.
• 37:13
  There's
• 37:14
  more
• 37:14
  people.
• 37:15
  We've
• 37:15
  spread
• 37:16
  out.
• 37:16
  And
• 37:17
  you
• 37:17
  now
• 37:17
  have
• 37:17
  these
• 37:18
  fires
• 37:18
  that
• 37:19
  really
• 37:19
  want
• 37:19
  to
• 37:20
  propagate
• 37:20
  through
• 37:21
  those
• 37:21
  ecosystems,
• 37:22
  but
• 37:22
  they're
• 37:22
  closer
• 37:23
  to
• 37:23
  our
• 37:23
  communities.
• 37:24
  And
• 37:24
  then
• 37:24
  throw
• 37:24
  in
• 37:25
  the
• 37:25
  volatile
• 37:25
  conditions
• 37:26
  and
• 37:26
  this
• 37:26
  is
• 37:26
  what
• 37:26
  you
• 37:26
  get.
• 37:27
  So
• 37:27
  we
• 37:27
  got
• 37:27
  some
• 37:28
  work
• 37:28
  to
• 37:28
  do
• 37:28
  for
• 37:28
  sure.
• 37:28
  Oh,
• 37:29
  yeah,
• 37:29
  100%.
• 37:31
  Well,
• 37:31
  we're
• 37:31
  going
• 37:31
  to
• 37:31
  run
• 37:31
  out
• 37:32
  of
• 37:32
  time
• 37:32
  pretty
• 37:32
  soon.
• 37:32
  I
• 37:33
  know
• 37:33
  we
• 37:33
  got
• 37:33
  to
• 37:33
  watch
• 37:33
  out
• 37:33
  for
• 37:34
  that,
• 37:34
  but
• 37:34
  I
• 37:34
  wanted
• 37:34
  to
• 37:35
  talk
• 37:35
  more
• 37:35
  about
• 37:35
  fortified
• 37:36
  home
• 37:36
  a
• 37:36
  little
• 37:36
  bit
• 37:36
  here
• 37:37
  and
• 37:38
  really
• 37:38
  get
• 37:38
  a
• 37:38
  bow
• 37:38
  around
• 37:38
  that
• 37:39
  for
• 37:39
  the
• 37:39
  people
• 37:39
  out
• 37:40
  there,
• 37:40
  because
• 37:40
  we
• 37:40
  were
• 37:40
  teasing
• 37:41
  about
• 37:41
  it
• 37:41
  earlier,
• 37:41
  talking
• 37:42
  about
• 37:42
  wanting
• 37:42
  to
• 37:42
  do
• 37:42
  it.
• 37:42
  But
• 37:43
  let's
• 37:44
  give
• 37:44
  people
• 37:44
  a
• 37:44
  little
• 37:44
  bit
• 37:44
  more
• 37:44
  information
• 37:45
  on
• 37:45
  that
• 37:45
  because
• 37:45
  I
• 37:46
  think
• 37:46
  it's
• 37:46
  such
• 37:46
  a
• 37:46
  great
• 37:46
  thing
• 37:47
  that
• 37:47
  you
• 37:47
  guys
• 37:47
  are
• 37:47
  doing.
• 37:48
  You
• 37:48
  guys
• 37:48
  have
• 37:48
  such
• 37:48
  an
• 37:49
  amazing
• 37:49
  testing
• 37:50
  facility
• 37:50
  where
• 37:51
  you're
• 37:51
  really
• 37:51
  just
• 37:51
  testing
• 37:52
  out
• 37:52
  materials
• 37:52
  and.
• 37:53
  And
• 37:53
  I
• 37:53
  gotta
• 37:54
  get
• 37:54
  down
• 37:54
  there
• 37:54
  one
• 37:54
  of
• 37:54
  these
• 37:54
  days
• 37:55
  and
• 37:55
  check
• 37:55
  it
• 37:55
  out,
• 37:55
  because
• 37:56
  anytime
• 37:56
  I
• 37:56
  can
• 37:56
  watch
• 37:57
  you
• 37:57
  guys
• 37:57
  build
• 37:58
  homes
• 37:58
  up
• 37:59
  in
• 37:59
  a
• 38:00
  wind
• 38:00
  tunnel
• 38:01
  and
• 38:01
  try
• 38:01
  to
• 38:01
  blow
• 38:02
  them
• 38:02
  down,
• 38:02
  I'm
• 38:02
  interested,
• 38:03
  if
• 38:03
  you
• 38:03
  know
• 38:03
  what
• 38:03
  I
• 38:03
  mean.
• 38:04
  Oh,
• 38:04
  there's
• 38:05
  definitely
• 38:05
  a
• 38:05
  cool
• 38:05
  factor.
• 38:06
  And
• 38:06
  there's
• 38:06
  always
• 38:06
  like
• 38:07
  five
• 38:07
  months
• 38:08
  of
• 38:08
  work
• 38:08
  for
• 38:08
  like
• 38:09
  five
• 38:09
  minutes.
• 38:10
  Oh,
• 38:10
  my
• 38:10
  goodness.
• 38:11
  Yeah,
• 38:12
  that
• 38:12
  was
• 38:12
  crazy.
• 38:13
  But
• 38:13
  yeah.
• 38:14
  So
• 38:14
  our
• 38:14
  Fortified
• 38:15
  program
• 38:16
  is.
• 38:16
  And
• 38:16
  I'll
• 38:16
  give
• 38:16
  a
• 38:16
  shout
• 38:16
  out
• 38:17
  to
• 38:17
  our
• 38:17
  Wildfire
• 38:17
  Prepared
• 38:18
  Home
• 38:18
  program,
• 38:18
  which
• 38:19
  is.
• 38:19
  These
• 38:19
  are
• 38:19
  what
• 38:19
  we
• 38:20
  call
• 38:20
  our
• 38:20
  designation
• 38:21
  program.
• 38:21
  They're
• 38:22
  building
• 38:23
  standards
• 38:23
  that
• 38:23
  go
• 38:24
  above
• 38:24
  the
• 38:25
  building
• 38:25
  code
• 38:26
  and
• 38:26
  are
• 38:26
  designed
• 38:26
  for
• 38:27
  resilience.
• 38:27
  For
• 38:27
  Fortified
• 38:28
  is
• 38:28
  around
• 38:28
  windstorms
• 38:29
  and
• 38:29
  then
• 38:29
  also
• 38:29
  wind
• 38:30
  and
• 38:30
  hail.
• 38:30
  Fortified
• 38:31
  has
• 38:31
  three
• 38:31
  different
• 38:32
  levels
• 38:32
  you
• 38:32
  could
• 38:33
  build
• 38:33
  to,
• 38:33
  and
• 38:33
  the
• 38:34
  first
• 38:34
  one
• 38:34
  is
• 38:34
  roof,
• 38:35
  which
• 38:35
  is
• 38:36
  the
• 38:36
  best
• 38:36
  option
• 38:37
  if
• 38:37
  you
• 38:37
  are
• 38:37
  re
• 38:38
  roofing
• 38:38
  and
• 38:38
  you
• 38:38
  want
• 38:39
  to
• 38:39
  make
• 38:39
  your
• 38:39
  roof
• 38:40
  better
• 38:40
  and
• 38:40
  stronger
• 38:40
  for
• 38:40
  the
• 38:41
  next
• 38:41
  storm.
• 38:41
  Fortified
• 38:42
  roof
• 38:42
  is
• 38:42
  the
• 38:42
  deal
• 38:43
  and
• 38:43
  it's
• 38:43
  got
• 38:43
  its
• 38:44
  system
• 38:44
  of
• 38:44
  protections.
• 38:45
  The
• 38:45
  cornerstone
• 38:46
  is
• 38:46
  the
• 38:46
  sealed
• 38:46
  roof
• 38:47
  deck.
• 38:47
  Making
• 38:47
  sure
• 38:48
  that
• 38:48
  the
• 38:48
  deck
• 38:49
  seams
• 38:49
  are
• 38:49
  sealed
• 38:49
  as
• 38:50
  we
• 38:50
  talked
• 38:50
  about
• 38:50
  earlier,
• 38:51
  that
• 38:51
  wind
• 38:51
  driven
• 38:51
  rain
• 38:52
  can't
• 38:52
  get
• 38:52
  through
• 38:53
  there
• 38:53
  and
• 38:54
  amplify
• 38:54
  all
• 38:54
  that
• 38:54
  interior
• 38:55
  water
• 38:55
  damage.
• 38:56
  The
• 38:56
  next
• 38:57
  piece
• 38:57
  is
• 38:57
  adding
• 38:57
  ring
• 38:57
  shank
• 38:58
  nails
• 38:58
  to
• 38:59
  the
• 38:59
  decking.
• 38:59
  So
• 38:59
  you're
• 38:59
  going
• 38:59
  to
• 39:00
  improve
• 39:00
  the
• 39:00
  uplift
• 39:00
  resistance
• 39:01
  of
• 39:01
  your
• 39:01
  deck.
• 39:02
  That's
• 39:02
  something
• 39:02
  we've
• 39:02
  known
• 39:03
  for
• 39:03
  several
• 39:03
  decades
• 39:03
  in
• 39:04
  wind
• 39:04
  engineering.
• 39:05
  And
• 39:05
  then
• 39:05
  lastly,
• 39:06
  there's
• 39:06
  some
• 39:06
  details
• 39:07
  around
• 39:07
  how
• 39:07
  the
• 39:08
  edge
• 39:08
  shingles
• 39:09
  are
• 39:09
  sealed
• 39:10
  down.
• 39:11
  That
• 39:11
  is
• 39:11
  the
• 39:12
  peak
• 39:12
  area
• 39:12
  of
• 39:12
  uplift.
• 39:13
  So
• 39:13
  shingles
• 39:14
  don't
• 39:14
  age
• 39:14
  that
• 39:15
  well
• 39:15
  from
• 39:15
  a
• 39:15
  wind
• 39:15
  resistance
• 39:16
  perspective.
• 39:17
  But
• 39:17
  this
• 39:17
  is
• 39:17
  the
• 39:17
  one
• 39:18
  spot
• 39:18
  where
• 39:18
  we
• 39:18
  try
• 39:19
  to
• 39:19
  mitigate
• 39:19
  some
• 39:19
  of
• 39:19
  that
• 39:20
  at
• 39:20
  the
• 39:20
  edges
• 39:21
  where
• 39:21
  there's
• 39:21
  the
• 39:21
  highest
• 39:22
  uplift.
• 39:22
  So
• 39:22
  that's
• 39:23
  roof.
• 39:23
  Then
• 39:24
  we
• 39:24
  move
• 39:24
  on
• 39:24
  to
• 39:24
  silver,
• 39:25
  which
• 39:25
  is
• 39:25
  the
• 39:25
  middle
• 39:25
  ground
• 39:26
  where
• 39:26
  you
• 39:26
  add
• 39:26
  opening
• 39:27
  protection
• 39:27
  around
• 39:27
  windows,
• 39:28
  garages,
• 39:29
  chimney,
• 39:29
  reinforced
• 39:30
  chimney
• 39:30
  connections,
• 39:30
  things
• 39:31
  like
• 39:31
  that.
• 39:31
  But
• 39:32
  really
• 39:32
  the
• 39:33
  gold,
• 39:33
  and
• 39:33
  I
• 39:33
  say
• 39:34
  gold
• 39:34
  because
• 39:34
  it
• 39:34
  is
• 39:34
  called
• 39:35
  fortified
• 39:35
  gold.
• 39:35
  It
• 39:35
  is.
• 39:36
  The
• 39:36
  gold
• 39:36
  standard
• 39:37
  is
• 39:37
  the
• 39:37
  biggest
• 39:38
  for
• 39:38
  a
• 39:38
  new
• 39:38
  build
• 39:39
  and
• 39:39
  it's
• 39:39
  the
• 39:40
  full.
• 39:40
  You
• 39:41
  get
• 39:41
  the
• 39:41
  components
• 39:41
  of
• 39:41
  fortified
• 39:42
  roof,
• 39:43
  impact
• 39:43
  resistant
• 39:44
  windows,
• 39:45
  wind
• 39:45
  rated
• 39:45
  garage
• 39:46
  door
• 39:46
  and
• 39:46
  the
• 39:46
  full
• 39:47
  load
• 39:47
  path.
• 39:47
  We
• 39:48
  tie
• 39:48
  the
• 39:48
  roof
• 39:48
  to
• 39:48
  walls,
• 39:49
  wall
• 39:49
  to
• 39:49
  foundation.
• 39:51
  It
• 39:51
  is
• 39:51
  the
• 39:52
  gold
• 39:52
  standard
• 39:53
  for
• 39:53
  construction.
• 39:54
  And
• 39:54
  I
• 39:54
  mentioned
• 39:54
  earlier
• 39:54
  the
• 39:55
  Florida
• 39:55
  building
• 39:55
  code.
• 39:56
  In
• 39:56
  most
• 39:57
  in
• 39:57
  about
• 39:57
  a
• 39:57
  third
• 39:58
  of
• 39:58
  the
• 39:58
  state,
• 39:59
  the
• 39:59
  code
• 40:00
  now
• 40:00
  mimics
• 40:01
  fortified
• 40:02
  gold.
• 40:02
  It's
• 40:03
  come
• 40:03
  up
• 40:04
  so
• 40:04
  much
• 40:04
  that's
• 40:04
  awesome
• 40:05
  that
• 40:05
  some
• 40:05
  places
• 40:06
  where
• 40:06
  you're
• 40:06
  building
• 40:07
  you
• 40:07
  are
• 40:07
  basically
• 40:08
  getting
• 40:08
  the
• 40:08
  protections
• 40:09
  of
• 40:09
  a
• 40:09
  fortified
• 40:09
  gold
• 40:10
  home.
• 40:10
  It's
• 40:10
  one
• 40:10
  of
• 40:10
  the
• 40:10
  biggest
• 40:11
  windstorm
• 40:12
  resilient
• 40:12
  success
• 40:13
  stories
• 40:13
  in
• 40:13
  the
• 40:13
  United
• 40:14
  States.
• 40:14
  So
• 40:15
  that's
• 40:15
  taking
• 40:15
  decades
• 40:16
  of
• 40:16
  wind
• 40:16
  engineering
• 40:17
  science,
• 40:17
  putting
• 40:17
  it
• 40:17
  into
• 40:18
  a
• 40:18
  standard
• 40:19
  and
• 40:19
  turn
• 40:19
  it
• 40:19
  loose.
• 40:20
  So
• 40:20
  we've
• 40:20
  eclipsed.
• 40:21
  I
• 40:21
  could
• 40:21
  actually
• 40:21
  pull
• 40:22
  that
• 40:22
  up.
• 40:22
  We
• 40:22
  are
• 40:22
  in
• 40:23
  50,000
• 40:24
  plus
• 40:24
  designations
• 40:25
  these
• 40:25
  days.
• 40:26
  Wow.
• 40:26
  And
• 40:26
  it's
• 40:26
  growing
• 40:27
  rapidly.
• 40:27
  Alabama,
• 40:28
  coastal
• 40:28
  Alabama
• 40:29
  started
• 40:29
  all
• 40:29
  this
• 40:30
  momentum.
• 40:30
  They've
• 40:31
  even
• 40:31
  put
• 40:31
  fortified
• 40:32
  into
• 40:32
  their
• 40:32
  codes
• 40:33
  themselves.
• 40:34
  And
• 40:34
  a
• 40:34
  lot
• 40:34
  of
• 40:34
  those
• 40:35
  jurisdictions,
• 40:35
  Louisiana's
• 40:36
  coming
• 40:36
  up.
• 40:37
  North
• 40:37
  Carolina
• 40:37
  is
• 40:38
  a
• 40:38
  second.
• 40:38
  So
• 40:38
  they're
• 40:39
  hot
• 40:39
  on
• 40:39
  the
• 40:39
  heels
• 40:39
  of
• 40:39
  Alabama.
• 40:40
  Louisiana
• 40:41
  started
• 40:41
  their
• 40:42
  grant
• 40:42
  program
• 40:42
  this
• 40:42
  year.
• 40:43
  And
• 40:43
  I
• 40:43
  will
• 40:43
  tell
• 40:44
  you,
• 40:44
  in
• 40:45
  most
• 40:46
  states
• 40:46
  these
• 40:46
  days
• 40:47
  there
• 40:47
  are
• 40:47
  insurance
• 40:48
  incentives
• 40:49
  tied
• 40:49
  to
• 40:50
  fortified.
• 40:51
  If
• 40:51
  you
• 40:51
  have
• 40:51
  that
• 40:51
  roof
• 40:52
  designation
• 40:52
  or
• 40:52
  gold
• 40:53
  or
• 40:53
  silver
• 40:53
  designation.
• 40:54
  So
• 40:55
  check
• 40:55
  out
• 40:55
  fortified
• 40:56
  home.org
• 40:56
  and
• 40:56
  we're
• 40:57
  doing
• 40:57
  the
• 40:57
  same
• 40:57
  thing
• 40:57
  for
• 40:57
  Wildfire.
• 40:58
  The
• 40:58
  program
• 40:58
  is
• 40:58
  called
• 40:58
  Wildfire
• 40:59
  Prepared
• 40:59
  Home.
• 41:00
  Same
• 41:00
  thing,
• 41:00
  set
• 41:01
  of
• 41:01
  code,
• 41:01
  enhanced
• 41:02
  protections
• 41:02
  that
• 41:02
  are
• 41:03
  Meant
• 41:03
  for
• 41:03
  mitigation.
• 41:04
  The
• 41:04
  Wildfire
• 41:04
  Prepared
• 41:05
  program
• 41:05
  just
• 41:05
  has
• 41:06
  two
• 41:06
  levels.
• 41:06
  It's
• 41:07
  what
• 41:07
  we
• 41:07
  call
• 41:07
  our
• 41:07
  base
• 41:07
  level,
• 41:08
  which
• 41:08
  is
• 41:08
  really
• 41:08
  about
• 41:09
  protecting
• 41:09
  against
• 41:10
  ember
• 41:10
  attack.
• 41:11
  And
• 41:11
  then
• 41:11
  we
• 41:11
  go
• 41:11
  to
• 41:12
  plus,
• 41:12
  which
• 41:12
  brings
• 41:13
  in
• 41:13
  not
• 41:13
  only
• 41:13
  ember
• 41:13
  attack,
• 41:14
  but
• 41:14
  we
• 41:14
  talked
• 41:15
  about
• 41:15
  it,
• 41:15
  the
• 41:15
  flames,
• 41:16
  radiant
• 41:16
  heat,
• 41:17
  building,
• 41:17
  the
• 41:17
  more
• 41:17
  hardened
• 41:18
  structural
• 41:19
  materials
• 41:19
  to
• 41:20
  give
• 41:20
  you
• 41:20
  a
• 41:20
  more
• 41:20
  comprehensive
• 41:21
  set
• 41:21
  of
• 41:21
  protection.
• 41:22
  So
• 41:22
  those
• 41:22
  are
• 41:22
  the
• 41:23
  designation
• 41:23
  programs
• 41:24
  of
• 41:24
  trying
• 41:24
  to
• 41:24
  bring
• 41:25
  science
• 41:26
  put
• 41:26
  into
• 41:27
  a
• 41:27
  practical
• 41:27
  standard
• 41:28
  that
• 41:28
  can
• 41:28
  be
• 41:28
  executed
• 41:29
  on.
• 41:29
  And
• 41:29
  it's
• 41:29
  been
• 41:30
  Fortified
• 41:30
  has
• 41:30
  been
• 41:30
  an
• 41:30
  amazing
• 41:31
  ride.
• 41:31
  Started
• 41:32
  slow,
• 41:32
  but
• 41:33
  now
• 41:33
  we
• 41:33
  are
• 41:34
  definitely
• 41:34
  cranking
• 41:34
  away.
• 41:35
  That
• 41:35
  is
• 41:36
  awesome.
• 41:36
  Yeah,
• 41:36
  you
• 41:36
  guys
• 41:37
  are
• 41:37
  just
• 41:37
  really
• 41:37
  changing
• 41:38
  it.
• 41:38
  And
• 41:38
  what
• 41:38
  I
• 41:39
  think
• 41:39
  is
• 41:39
  cool
• 41:39
  is
• 41:39
  that
• 41:40
  there's
• 41:40
  always
• 41:40
  been
• 41:40
  a
• 41:40
  pushback
• 41:41
  from
• 41:41
  some
• 41:41
  of
• 41:41
  the
• 41:41
  building
• 41:42
  community
• 41:42
  out
• 41:42
  there
• 41:42
  of,
• 41:43
  well,
• 41:43
  we're
• 41:43
  trying
• 41:43
  to
• 41:43
  make
• 41:43
  houses
• 41:44
  more
• 41:44
  affordable.
• 41:45
  And
• 41:45
  at
• 41:45
  the
• 41:45
  same
• 41:45
  point,
• 41:45
  you're
• 41:46
  going,
• 41:46
  how
• 41:46
  are
• 41:46
  we
• 41:47
  making
• 41:47
  houses
• 41:47
  more
• 41:48
  affordable
• 41:48
  if
• 41:49
  we're
• 41:49
  having
• 41:49
  to
• 41:49
  replace
• 41:50
  them
• 41:50
  in
• 41:50
  these
• 41:50
  areas
• 41:51
  so
• 41:51
  soon?
• 41:51
  And
• 41:52
  the
• 41:52
  insurance
• 41:52
  companies,
• 41:53
  who
• 41:53
  are
• 41:53
  a
• 41:53
  business
• 41:54
  themselves,
• 41:55
  have
• 41:56
  to
• 41:56
  be
• 41:56
  able
• 41:56
  to
• 41:56
  be
• 41:57
  profitable
• 41:57
  so
• 41:58
  they
• 41:58
  can
• 41:58
  stay
• 41:58
  in
• 41:58
  business
• 41:59
  and
• 41:59
  not
• 41:59
  be
• 42:00
  like
• 42:00
  in
• 42:00
  California
• 42:00
  where
• 42:01
  they're
• 42:01
  dropping
• 42:01
  everybody's
• 42:02
  plans
• 42:02
  down
• 42:02
  there
• 42:02
  because
• 42:03
  they
• 42:03
  literally
• 42:03
  are
• 42:03
  going
• 42:03
  to
• 42:03
  go
• 42:03
  out
• 42:04
  of
• 42:04
  business
• 42:04
  if
• 42:04
  they
• 42:04
  stay
• 42:05
  there.
• 42:05
  So.
• 42:05
  So
• 42:05
  we
• 42:06
  gotta
• 42:06
  find
• 42:06
  that
• 42:06
  happy
• 42:07
  medium.
• 42:07
  And
• 42:07
  you
• 42:07
  guys
• 42:07
  are
• 42:08
  just
• 42:08
  doing
• 42:08
  such
• 42:08
  great
• 42:09
  work
• 42:09
  of
• 42:09
  finding
• 42:10
  where
• 42:11
  that
• 42:11
  is
• 42:11
  and
• 42:12
  the
• 42:12
  things
• 42:12
  that
• 42:12
  we
• 42:12
  can
• 42:12
  do
• 42:13
  as
• 42:13
  part
• 42:13
  of
• 42:13
  now
• 42:14
  standard
• 42:14
  building
• 42:15
  practices.
• 42:15
  And
• 42:16
  I
• 42:16
  think
• 42:16
  the
• 42:16
  more
• 42:16
  we
• 42:16
  do
• 42:17
  of
• 42:17
  elevating
• 42:18
  the
• 42:18
  rest
• 42:18
  of
• 42:18
  the
• 42:18
  community,
• 42:18
  because
• 42:19
  quite
• 42:20
  frankly,
• 42:20
  building
• 42:20
  code
• 42:21
  is
• 42:21
  the
• 42:21
  minimum
• 42:21
  out
• 42:21
  there.
• 42:22
  And
• 42:22
  if
• 42:22
  we
• 42:22
  can
• 42:22
  get
• 42:22
  that
• 42:23
  minimum
• 42:23
  a
• 42:23
  little
• 42:23
  higher
• 42:24
  to
• 42:25
  make
• 42:25
  these
• 42:25
  things
• 42:25
  be
• 42:25
  able
• 42:26
  to
• 42:26
  withstand
• 42:27
  more,
• 42:28
  everyone
• 42:28
  wins.
• 42:29
  Yeah,
• 42:29
  I
• 42:30
  think
• 42:30
  you
• 42:30
  hit
• 42:30
  it.
• 42:31
  Absolutely.
• 42:31
  Fortified
• 42:32
  really
• 42:32
  is.
• 42:32
  It's
• 42:33
  such
• 42:33
  a
• 42:33
  great
• 42:34
  model
• 42:34
  for
• 42:34
  success.
• 42:35
  And
• 42:36
  it
• 42:36
  is
• 42:36
  that
• 42:36
  middle
• 42:37
  ground.
• 42:37
  Right.
• 42:39
  If
• 42:40
  you
• 42:40
  look
• 42:40
  at
• 42:40
  the
• 42:40
  amount
• 42:41
  of
• 42:41
  material
• 42:41
  we're
• 42:42
  unfortunately
• 42:42
  replacing
• 42:43
  over
• 42:43
  and
• 42:43
  over
• 42:43
  again
• 42:44
  with
• 42:44
  damage,
• 42:45
  those
• 42:45
  dollars
• 42:46
  have
• 42:46
  just
• 42:47
  got
• 42:47
  out
• 42:47
  of
• 42:47
  control.
• 42:48
  And
• 42:48
  if
• 42:48
  we
• 42:49
  look
• 42:49
  at
• 42:49
  our
• 42:49
  system
• 42:50
  in
• 42:50
  the
• 42:51
  United
• 42:51
  States,
• 42:51
  this
• 42:51
  isn't
• 42:52
  sustainable.
• 42:53
  And
• 42:54
  if
• 42:54
  you
• 42:55
  look
• 42:55
  at
• 42:55
  the
• 42:55
  spectrum
• 42:55
  in
• 42:56
  the
• 42:56
  insurance
• 42:56
  industry,
• 42:57
  the
• 42:57
  carriers
• 42:58
  that
• 42:58
  are
• 42:58
  going
• 42:58
  to
• 42:58
  feel
• 42:59
  this
• 42:59
  first
• 42:59
  and
• 43:00
  already
• 43:00
  are,
• 43:01
  or
• 43:01
  a
• 43:01
  lot
• 43:01
  of
• 43:01
  the
• 43:02
  smaller
• 43:02
  regional
• 43:02
  carriers
• 43:03
  that
• 43:04
  don't
• 43:04
  have
• 43:05
  giant
• 43:05
  footprints
• 43:06
  like
• 43:06
  the
• 43:06
  big
• 43:06
  names
• 43:06
  we
• 43:06
  see
• 43:07
  on
• 43:07
  super
• 43:07
  bowl
• 43:07
  commercials,
• 43:08
  but
• 43:09
  they're
• 43:09
  having
• 43:09
  to
• 43:09
  manage
• 43:10
  this.
• 43:10
  And
• 43:11
  the
• 43:11
  loss
• 43:12
  part
• 43:12
  has
• 43:12
  become
• 43:13
  unsustainable
• 43:14
  because
• 43:15
  we
• 43:15
  just
• 43:16
  have
• 43:16
  to
• 43:16
  replace
• 43:16
  so
• 43:17
  much
• 43:17
  material
• 43:17
  these
• 43:18
  days.
• 43:18
  We
• 43:19
  can
• 43:19
  do
• 43:19
  better.
• 43:20
  We're
• 43:20
  figuring
• 43:21
  out
• 43:21
  how
• 43:22
  Fortified
• 43:23
  has
• 43:23
  been
• 43:23
  a
• 43:23
  place
• 43:23
  where
• 43:23
  we've
• 43:24
  shown
• 43:24
  what
• 43:24
  that
• 43:25
  middle
• 43:25
  ground
• 43:25
  actually
• 43:26
  looks
• 43:26
  like,
• 43:26
  where
• 43:26
  you
• 43:27
  got
• 43:27
  a
• 43:27
  great
• 43:27
  retrofit
• 43:28
  option
• 43:28
  that
• 43:29
  doesn't
• 43:29
  cost
• 43:30
  A
• 43:30
  whole
• 43:30
  lot
• 43:30
  more.
• 43:31
  And
• 43:31
  you
• 43:31
  also
• 43:31
  got
• 43:32
  a
• 43:32
  great
• 43:32
  option
• 43:32
  for
• 43:33
  new
• 43:33
  construction
• 43:34
  that
• 43:34
  really
• 43:35
  does
• 43:35
  deliver.
• 43:36
  It
• 43:36
  was
• 43:36
  remarkable.
• 43:37
  We
• 43:37
  looked
• 43:37
  at
• 43:37
  some
• 43:37
  of
• 43:37
  the
• 43:37
  Hurricane
• 43:38
  Sally
• 43:39
  loss
• 43:40
  data
• 43:40
  with
• 43:40
  the
• 43:40
  Alabama
• 43:41
  Department
• 43:41
  of
• 43:41
  Insurance
• 43:42
  and
• 43:42
  University
• 43:42
  of
• 43:42
  Alabama.
• 43:43
  Fortified
• 43:44
  homes
• 43:44
  that
• 43:45
  yeah,
• 43:45
  they,
• 43:45
  they'll,
• 43:46
  you
• 43:46
  can
• 43:46
  have
• 43:46
  damage.
• 43:47
  It,
• 43:47
  it
• 43:47
  happens.
• 43:48
  Right.
• 43:48
  But
• 43:48
  you
• 43:48
  look
• 43:49
  at
• 43:49
  existing,
• 43:49
  your
• 43:50
  non
• 43:50
  fortified
• 43:50
  construction
• 43:51
  is
• 43:51
  that
• 43:51
  big
• 43:52
  old
• 43:52
  fat
• 43:52
  exponential
• 43:53
  growth
• 43:53
  and
• 43:54
  damage
• 43:54
  ratios.
• 43:55
  And
• 43:55
  there's
• 43:55
  fortified
• 43:56
  just
• 43:56
  humming
• 43:56
  along
• 43:56
  the
• 43:57
  bottom.
• 43:57
  Yeah,
• 43:57
  you
• 43:57
  get
• 43:58
  a
• 43:58
  little
• 43:58
  damage
• 43:58
  here
• 43:58
  and
• 43:58
  there,
• 43:59
  but
• 43:59
  not
• 43:59
  into
• 43:59
  that
• 43:59
  big
• 44:00
  old
• 44:00
  fact
• 44:00
  curve
• 44:01
  that
• 44:01
  takes
• 44:01
  off
• 44:02
  skyrocketing
• 44:03
  as
• 44:03
  the
• 44:03
  event
• 44:03
  severity
• 44:04
  gets
• 44:04
  worse.
• 44:05
  And
• 44:05
  you
• 44:05
  sit
• 44:05
  there,
• 44:06
  look,
• 44:06
  I
• 44:06
  was
• 44:06
  like
• 44:06
  man,
• 44:06
  that's
• 44:06
  the
• 44:07
  story
• 44:07
  right
• 44:07
  there.
• 44:08
  Yeah.
• 44:08
  We
• 44:08
  see
• 44:08
  it
• 44:09
  on
• 44:09
  the
• 44:09
  news.
• 44:09
  You
• 44:09
  see
• 44:09
  the
• 44:09
  hurricane
• 44:10
  footage
• 44:10
  of
• 44:10
  the
• 44:11
  helicopter
• 44:11
  or
• 44:11
  the
• 44:12
  drone
• 44:12
  going
• 44:12
  by
• 44:13
  and
• 44:13
  you're
• 44:13
  like
• 44:13
  how
• 44:14
  come
• 44:14
  those
• 44:14
  four
• 44:15
  houses
• 44:15
  are
• 44:15
  three
• 44:16
  blocks
• 44:16
  back
• 44:17
  in
• 44:17
  piles
• 44:18
  of
• 44:18
  rubble
• 44:19
  in
• 44:19
  this
• 44:19
  house
• 44:19
  here
• 44:20
  has
• 44:20
  some
• 44:20
  damage
• 44:21
  to
• 44:21
  the
• 44:21
  siding.
• 44:22
  Yeah,
• 44:22
  we
• 44:22
  can't
• 44:23
  stop
• 44:23
  all
• 44:23
  damage
• 44:24
  but
• 44:24
  man,
• 44:24
  we
• 44:24
  can
• 44:24
  do
• 44:24
  a
• 44:25
  heck
• 44:25
  of
• 44:25
  a
• 44:25
  lot
• 44:25
  to
• 44:26
  take
• 44:26
  a
• 44:26
  chunk
• 44:26
  out
• 44:26
  of
• 44:26
  it.
• 44:27
  And
• 44:27
  also
• 44:27
  so
• 44:28
  at
• 44:28
  the
• 44:28
  end
• 44:28
  of
• 44:28
  the
• 44:28
  day
• 44:29
  you're
• 44:29
  going
• 44:29
  to
• 44:29
  have
• 44:30
  families
• 44:30
  that
• 44:30
  do
• 44:31
  have
• 44:31
  a
• 44:31
  home
• 44:31
  to
• 44:31
  come
• 44:32
  back
• 44:32
  to
• 44:33
  and
• 44:33
  that
• 44:34
  when
• 44:34
  we
• 44:34
  do
• 44:34
  it
• 44:34
  in
• 44:35
  mass,
• 44:35
  you
• 44:36
  will
• 44:36
  have
• 44:36
  communities
• 44:37
  that
• 44:37
  stay
• 44:37
  intact
• 44:38
  rather
• 44:39
  than
• 44:39
  places
• 44:40
  that
• 44:40
  have
• 44:40
  been
• 44:40
  so
• 44:41
  decimated
• 44:41
  that
• 44:41
  people
• 44:42
  just
• 44:42
  have
• 44:42
  to
• 44:42
  sell
• 44:43
  their
• 44:43
  homes
• 44:43
  because
• 44:43
  they
• 44:44
  can't
• 44:44
  hand
• 44:44
  the
• 44:45
  financial
• 44:45
  burden
• 44:46
  is
• 44:46
  too
• 44:46
  much.
• 44:47
  Even
• 44:47
  if
• 44:47
  you
• 44:47
  had
• 44:48
  insurance,
• 44:49
  you
• 44:49
  may
• 44:49
  not
• 44:49
  be
• 44:50
  able
• 44:50
  to
• 44:50
  handle
• 44:50
  the
• 44:51
  financial
• 44:51
  burden
• 44:52
  of
• 44:52
  what
• 44:52
  that
• 44:53
  means.
• 44:53
  And
• 44:54
  I
• 44:54
  think
• 44:54
  when
• 44:54
  we
• 44:55
  do
• 44:55
  this
• 44:55
  in
• 44:55
  mass,
• 44:55
  that's
• 44:56
  what
• 44:56
  changes.
• 44:56
  We
• 44:57
  keep
• 44:57
  those
• 44:57
  communities
• 44:58
  intact.
• 44:59
  Whereas
• 44:59
  today
• 45:00
  far
• 45:00
  too
• 45:00
  often
• 45:00
  we
• 45:00
  see
• 45:01
  them
• 45:01
  come
• 45:01
  apart
• 45:02
  for
• 45:02
  those
• 45:02
  reasons.
• 45:03
  Well,
• 45:03
  and
• 45:04
  then
• 45:04
  it
• 45:04
  just
• 45:04
  exponentially
• 45:05
  grows
• 45:05
  because
• 45:05
  if
• 45:06
  the
• 45:06
  first
• 45:06
  row
• 45:06
  of
• 45:06
  houses
• 45:07
  comes
• 45:07
  apart
• 45:08
  now
• 45:08
  that
• 45:09
  debris
• 45:09
  hits
• 45:09
  a
• 45:09
  second
• 45:10
  run
• 45:10
  of
• 45:10
  houses
• 45:11
  and
• 45:11
  it's
• 45:11
  just
• 45:12
  like
• 45:12
  an
• 45:12
  avalanche.
• 45:13
  Right.
• 45:13
  I
• 45:13
  mean
• 45:13
  you've
• 45:13
  got,
• 45:14
  you've
• 45:14
  now
• 45:14
  got
• 45:15
  what
• 45:15
  was
• 45:15
  tree
• 45:16
  debris
• 45:16
  or
• 45:16
  anything
• 45:16
  like
• 45:17
  that
• 45:17
  was
• 45:17
  from
• 45:17
  mother
• 45:17
  nature.
• 45:18
  Now
• 45:18
  you've
• 45:18
  got
• 45:19
  exponentially
• 45:20
  more
• 45:20
  going.
• 45:21
  Oh
• 45:21
  yeah.
• 45:21
  Causing
• 45:22
  more
• 45:22
  damage.
• 45:22
  So
• 45:22
  the
• 45:22
  more
• 45:23
  we
• 45:24
  talked
• 45:24
  about
• 45:24
  wildfire,
• 45:25
  right.
• 45:25
  It's
• 45:25
  the
• 45:25
  ultimate
• 45:26
  example.
• 45:27
  We
• 45:27
  can
• 45:27
  do
• 45:27
  a
• 45:27
  lot
• 45:28
  on
• 45:28
  our
• 45:28
  parser
• 45:29
  our
• 45:29
  lots
• 45:30
  to
• 45:30
  help
• 45:30
  reduce
• 45:30
  that
• 45:30
  risk.
• 45:31
  But
• 45:31
  when
• 45:31
  we
• 45:31
  tag
• 45:32
  team
• 45:32
  100
• 45:33
  of
• 45:33
  them,
• 45:34
  we
• 45:35
  actually
• 45:35
  can
• 45:35
  stop
• 45:36
  an
• 45:36
  entire
• 45:37
  catastrophe
• 45:38
  from
• 45:38
  unfolding.
• 45:39
  And
• 45:39
  so
• 45:39
  that's
• 45:40
  the
• 45:40
  message
• 45:40
  to
• 45:40
  fire
• 45:41
  across
• 45:42
  all
• 45:42
  these
• 45:42
  perils
• 45:43
  has
• 45:43
  that
• 45:43
  dependency
• 45:44
  the
• 45:44
  most.
• 45:45
  And
• 45:45
  when
• 45:45
  you
• 45:45
  do
• 45:45
  it
• 45:46
  all
• 45:46
  together,
• 45:47
  we
• 45:48
  can't
• 45:48
  stop
• 45:48
  the
• 45:48
  tornadoes
• 45:49
  and
• 45:49
  hurricanes
• 45:50
  because
• 45:51
  in
• 45:51
  reality
• 45:51
  our
• 45:52
  buildings
• 45:52
  don't
• 45:52
  contribute
• 45:53
  to
• 45:53
  what
• 45:53
  they
• 45:53
  are.
• 45:53
  But
• 45:54
  fire's
• 45:54
  different,
• 45:55
  right.
• 45:55
  Our
• 45:56
  houses
• 45:56
  are
• 45:56
  a
• 45:56
  fuel.
• 45:58
  We
• 45:58
  can
• 45:58
  absolutely
• 45:59
  stop
• 45:59
  a
• 46:00
  catastrophe
• 46:00
  from
• 46:00
  unfolding.
• 46:01
  It's
• 46:01
  pretty
• 46:01
  remarkable.
• 46:02
  It
• 46:02
  is.
• 46:03
  Well,
• 46:03
  we're
• 46:03
  running
• 46:03
  out
• 46:03
  of
• 46:03
  time,
• 46:04
  Ian.
• 46:04
  What's
• 46:04
  the
• 46:05
  best
• 46:05
  place
• 46:05
  for
• 46:05
  people
• 46:06
  to
• 46:06
  find
• 46:06
  out
• 46:06
  more
• 46:06
  about
• 46:06
  you
• 46:07
  guys
• 46:07
  and
• 46:07
  all
• 46:08
  the
• 46:08
  different
• 46:08
  things
• 46:08
  you
• 46:08
  do?
• 46:08
  Dr.
• 46:09
  Oh,
• 46:09
  yeah.
• 46:09
  Please
• 46:10
  go
• 46:10
  to
• 46:10
  ibhs.org
• 46:12
  for
• 46:12
  the
• 46:12
  information
• 46:13
  about
• 46:13
  all
• 46:13
  the
• 46:13
  research
• 46:14
  programs
• 46:14
  we
• 46:14
  get.
• 46:14
  Follow
• 46:14
  us
• 46:15
  on
• 46:15
  Social
• 46:15
  too,
• 46:16
  all
• 46:16
  the
• 46:16
  different
• 46:17
  channels
• 46:17
  you
• 46:17
  can
• 46:18
  find
• 46:18
  and
• 46:18
  see
• 46:18
  all
• 46:18
  the
• 46:19
  great
• 46:19
  images
• 46:19
  that
• 46:19
  come
• 46:20
  from
• 46:20
  the
• 46:20
  test
• 46:20
  work
• 46:20
  we
• 46:20
  do.
• 46:21
  And
• 46:21
  we
• 46:21
  mentioned
• 46:21
  the
• 46:21
  Fortify
• 46:22
  program.
• 46:22
  So
• 46:22
  that's
• 46:22
  fortify.org
• 46:23
  and
• 46:23
  then
• 46:24
  wildfire
• 46:24
  prepared,
• 46:25
  which
• 46:25
  is
• 46:25
  wildfire
• 46:26
  fireprepared.org
• 46:27
  but
• 46:27
  just.org
• 46:28
  will
• 46:28
  take
• 46:28
  you
• 46:28
  there
• 46:29
  to
• 46:29
  see
• 46:29
  all
• 46:29
  the
• 46:29
  great
• 46:30
  science
• 46:30
  that
• 46:30
  we
• 46:30
  do.
• 46:31
  And
• 46:31
  please
• 46:32
  check
• 46:32
  it
• 46:32
  out
• 46:32
  and
• 46:33
  give
• 46:33
  a
• 46:33
  look
• 46:33
  like
• 46:33
  we've
• 46:34
  talked
• 46:34
  about,
• 46:34
  if
• 46:35
  you're
• 46:35
  ready
• 46:35
  to
• 46:35
  make
• 46:35
  some
• 46:35
  changes
• 46:36
  to
• 46:36
  your
• 46:36
  home.
• 46:36
  That
• 46:36
  first
• 46:37
  step
• 46:37
  is
• 46:37
  always
• 46:38
  the
• 46:38
  best
• 46:38
  one,
• 46:39
  no
• 46:39
  question.
• 46:40
  Thanks
• 46:40
  for
• 46:40
  coming
• 46:40
  on
• 46:40
  today,
• 46:41
  brother.
• 46:41
  I'm
• 46:42
  Eric
• 46:42
  G.
• 46:42
  You
• 46:42
  gotta
• 46:43
  check
• 46:43
  these
• 46:43
  guys
• 46:43
  out.
• 46:44
  You've
• 46:44
  been
• 46:44
  listening
• 46:44
  to
• 46:45
  around
• 46:45
  the
• 46:45
  House.
